The author doesn't sugarcoat the situation or take the easy way out via a contrived case of deus ex machina - in fact, there's not a single supernatural element to be found, and the story is all the stronger for it. The reader is left to ponder if the punishment Light receives truly fits his crimes, if L is just as guilty as he for enacting it, or if they were both simply tragic figures caught up in a game bigger than themselves and were simply too conceited to realize it. Absolutely stunning. |
