''Through a Looking Glass, Darkly'' is a DarkerAndEdgier fanfic retelling of Creator/{{Syfy}}'s ''{{Series/Alice|2009}}'', itself a DarkerAndEdgier retelling of ''Literature/AliceInWonderland''. [[SpoileredRotten Spoilers for that series will abound on this page.]] It follows a storyline that is pretty common in every version of a tale that takes place DownTheRabbitHole: What if Alice had grown up in Wonderland?

The story follows Alice, mainly called Jelly or Jellybean, a Ten of Spades, as she turns to the Resistance when her father begins to go mad. It has plenty of [[{{Flashback}} flashbacks]] to Jellybean's childhood, and also does a lot to flesh out the [[{{Mooks}} Suits']] way of life.

It was written for the Alice in Wonderland Big Bang. The master post is [[http://going-boldly.livejournal.com/24010.html here.]]

!!Tropes:

* ActionGirl: Jelly, saved from being a DarkActionGirl by virtue of the fic being about her MistreatmentInducedBetrayal.
%%* ActionMom: [[spoiler: Carol, who becomes Tortoise, the leader of the countryside Resistance cells after her death was faked]].
* ArrangedMarriage: FromACertainPointOfView, namely Jack's: [[spoiler: 'Duchess' is a personality of his parent's choosing, implanted into the body a girl he did love, Grace. It worked well enough that he began to believe that Grace no longer existed, and considered his engagement a purely political one. Grace got better, though.]]
%%* AscendedExtra: Sheila, Shakina, and Carlotta St. Delaware all have speaking parts.
%% * TheAtoner: [[spoiler: Alice, at the end.]]
%%* BattleCouple: Hatter and Jelly.
%%* BecomingTheMask: Subtle, but there: pay attention to when 'Jelly' is used as opposed to 'Alice'.
%%* {{Brainwashed}}: [[spoiler: Not Carpenter this time around; but Duchess, more or less to make a point to Jack.]]
%%* BulletProofVest: Hatter, Jelly, and the Spades in general have this.
%%* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler: Hatter and March.]]
* ChildSoldiers: Suits begin their training at age fourteen. [[spoiler: For Spades, the final exam at boot camp is to behead three prisoners. Boot camp lasts three months.]]
%%* ClusterFBomb: Jelly has a mental one when March [[spoiler: kills Gryphon]].
* ColdBloodedTorture: The Tweedles [[spoiler: inflict this upon Hatter, Jellybean, and implicitly Carpenter, Cricket, and other Suits as well]].
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: At one point, Jellybean realizes that she's built a life and career around the idea that a certain amount of executions ''need'' to take place, no matter what the people getting the axe did.
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: Jelly goes up against a posse of Spades in the Forest of Wabe. Guess who wins?
* CulturePolice: A part of Jelly's job is to catch book smugglers.
* DeadpanSnarker: [[WorldOfSnark Many]]. Carpenter evidentially deals with his job as an unwilling MadScientist by explaining to his superiors how they're just plain wrong. AskAStupidQuestion and Jack will give you a stupid answer. Hatter and Jelly banter around their UnresolvedSexualTension.
* DistressedDude: Carpenter, [[spoiler: until he turns out to be plotting to blow up the Casino, that it.]]
%% * EvenMooksHaveLovedOnes: Indeed they do.
%% * EvilMatriarch: The Queen of Hearts.
%% * FemmeFatale: Duchess, [[spoiler: though only because she's brainwashed.]]
* ForWantOfANail: After all is said and done,[[spoiler: Carol and Robert Hamilton get a HappilyEverAfter in New York, Alice gets a AndTheAdventureContinues with Hatter in Wonderland, Jack is less of an emotional cripple, Duchess was brainwashed and is in the process of deprogramming herself, Duck was executed, Carlotta St. Delaware runs Hatter's former Tea Shop, and Hatter himself is Agent White. Phew.]]
%% * GoodAllAlong: The Suits.
* IControlMyMinionsThrough: Fear for their loved ones, [[GovernmentDrugEnforcement drugs]], and the power of SocialEngineering. If it works for you, you can also kill people ForTheEvulz (with the Queen's permission, of course); if none of this does, it's either {{Brainwashing}} or [[OffWithHisHead off with your head]]!
* IHaveYourWife: A integral part of enforcing the Suits' loyalty is the implicit, omnipresent threat against their less valuable/more vulnerable family members.
* LaResistance: A somewhat fractured political body, divided into two main groups: country (led by Tortoise) and city (led by Caterpillar).
%% * MagicKnight: Charlie.
%% * MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext: No amount of context explains Charlie.
%% * MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Jelly's kicks off the story.
%% * TheMole: Jelly, during the food riots, acting as a FakeDefector.
%% * MookFaceTurn: En mass, with shades of TheDogBitesBack involved.
%% * TheMutiny: How the Queen is ultimately defeated.
%% * NonActionGuy: Jack
%% * OnlySaneMan: [[TheMadHatter Hilariously]], Hatter wonders if this is his job at one point.
%% * PoliceBrutality: Hatter gets a demonstration of this [[spoiler: after his fake arrest]].
%% * StateSec: The Spades
%% * SleepCute: Hatter and Jelly snuggle in front of Charlie's fire.
* TarotMotifs: Each chapter is named after a tarot card, and includes a description of what the card could mean, for both upright and reversed drawings.
* WhatTheHellHero: Jelly to Jack [[spoiler: about his cheating on Duchess]]. Hatter to Jelly [[spoiler: about why the Suits don't try to rebel]]. Caterpillar to the Hamiltons [[spoiler: on not talking about their problems]]. Othello to Jelly [[spoiler: after he discovers that she really did join the Resistance]]. Jelly to Hatter [[spoiler: about mouthing off to the guards for no apparent reason]].
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: [[spoiler: Ultimately, Alice returns to Wonderland to serve as Trump of Defense, after finding that she no longer has a place on Earth.]]
