5	* ''Franchise/{{Naruto}}'' has tons of PeggySue fics. Those who usually end up going back are the members of Team 7 (including Kakashi) and Shikamaru, sometimes individually, sometimes together. The reason for going back usually has something to do with some event that ended well in canon ended catastrophically instead, causing a BadFuture where the time traveler has nothing left to lose by going back. The event varies, but recent ones make it the Fourth Great Shinobi War, wherein Madara and/or Tobi/[[spoiler:Obito]] won. They also commonly ignore [[spoiler:Princess Kaguya's involvement.]]
6	* [[TeamMemberInTheAdaptation A lot of fics in which the genin teams are different]], either because someone else is teaching Team 7 or someone else wanted Naruto (such as, for example, ''FanFic/Team8''), which shuffled the teams around (these fics are most often [[FanPreferredCouple Naruto/Hinata]]). A recurring theme in these is the perception that Kakashi in canon is a ''terrible'' teacher and Naruto could be so much stronger if he were trained "properly" (and usually made to wear clothes that aren't [[HighlyVisibleNinja orange]], despite Naruto's choice of clothing never being treated as an issue in canon).
7	** One variation on this formula is to have Hinata be on Team 7 instead of Sakura (''Fanfic/WhiteEyes'' is just one example). These stories, again, tend to be Naruto/Hinata (and how Sasuke reacts to Hinata may vary).
8	* There are a LOT of {{Self Insert Fic}}s, usually where someone either falls through a portal from the real world into the ''Naruto'' world, or dies in the real world and is reincarnated in the Naruto world. The codifier that [[FollowTheLeader almost all the others attempt to follow]] is ''FanFic/DreamingOfSunshine,'' where a girl is reincarnated as Shikamaru's twin sister; the page for that fic even includes a long list of imitators, at least six of which have their own work pages on this wiki. Almost all of them claim they were inspired by ''Dreaming of Sunshine'' at some stage.
9	* The in/famous Clan Restoration Act, where one male character is forced/ or wants to pair with multiple women to revive his clan.
10	* There are multiple fics when Naruto gains an awesome power and virtually every girl except (in most cases) [[RonTheDeathEater Sakura]] usually falls for him that includes his mother, Tsunade and girls he never met like Yugito.
11	* Nearly every story starts with Naruto being hated and attacked by the citizens of Konoha and the Third doing absolutely nothing about it or is too late. He is sometimes saved by a crossover character or an OC.
12	* There are many fics that deal with Naruto bringing back Sasuke only to be [[BetrayalFic betrayed by Sakura]]. He is later exiled/executed by the elders and the "civilian council". It usually ends up with Naruto gaining ComboPlatterPowers, becoming the leader of a village while Konoha gets destroyed economically and loses their allies as well. With war between Orochimaru, Kumo and Iwa.
13	* Twelve-plus young characters of the same age, with a variety of personalities? Let's put them in [[HighschoolAU high school]]! Let's add camp or a rock band. And one or two are {{New Transfer Student}}s.
14	* A really common plot is the non-massacre AU, usually used as an excuse to pair Itachi and Sakura up.
15	* Fanfics where Naruto turns out to be the last survivor of a made up clan[[labelnote:note]]Usually the Namikaze[[/labelnote]] and gets a new bloodline (particularly the Rinnegan) or Kurama in some unexplained way gives or alters his genes giving him the bloodline. [[spoiler: Before the Uzumaki Clan was revealed in canon but Naruto still doesn't have a bloodline.]]
16	* There's the very popular "Naruto turns against Leaf and gets revenge on everyone that abused him". Or, more accurately, "Naruto turns against Leaf and kills [[RonTheDeathEater the characters that the author doesn't like]] and spares the characters the author likes".
17	* A very popular fic is [=NaruHina=] shippers making Naruto as dumb as possible and having him constantly mocked by everyone for not noticing Hinata's feelings. Hinata, herself is usually portrayed as a stuttering like crazy for two seconds before fainting. This one got so popular that [[Manga/RockLeesSpringtimeOfYouth it's found its way into licensed material.]]
18	* There's the ever popular de-aged fic, which typically involves a jutsu going wrong and the main character of the story being turned into a child version of him or herself.
19	* A lot of crossovers usually start with the Naruto and Sasuke fighting at Valley of the end and the Kyuubi's and the Curse Seal's chakara will merge and create a portal taking Naruto to a new world.
20	* "Naruto is a [[ObfuscatingStupidity secret genius]]".
21	* Various characters become members of Anbu. Or join Akatsuki.
22	* "Itachi never killed his clan, wasn't a evil bastard, and really did love his brother." [[spoiler: At least, until that was revealed in canon to be true (well, the latter two, at least).]]

26	* Hiashi being an physically and sometimes sexually AbusiveParent to Hinata. This also occasionally involves emotional manipulation or abuse towards Hanabi, but she's more commonly treated with ParentalFavoritism.
27	* Stories where Hiashi loves his daughters very much but has to put up a front of aloofness to protect them from the Hyuuga council who can and will do whatever they can to "ensure the safety of the clan" (usually meaning "make sure we make things go our way and keep the Branch family under our thumbs").
28	* Fics where Hinata is in danger of getting the Curse Mark are everywhere, despite the fact either Hinata or her sister getting the mark isn't even implied in the series. Expect every Hyuuga (but Neji) to be evil and abusive towards Hinata, including Hanabi (who ironically adores Hinata in canon). There's also the opposite idea: Hanabi fears she's in danger of getting the Curse Mark, so she either keeps her distance from Hinata or acts like she hates her and tries to always best her.
29	* The Uzumaki clan turns out to have survived the [[DesignatedVillain Iwa and Kumo]] attack.
30	* Naruto snaps and becomes a cold-blooded killer.
31	* Crossovers usually make it so outside the Elemental Nations is a part of the world of whichever series the author may choose which will be referred as 'outside the veil'.
32	* A lot of crossovers mostly Franchise/TheDCU have Naruto be a Demon and a cult dedicated to him will awake him and he'll often be a [[VillainProtagonist villain]].
33	* Superhero crossovers will have Naruto be an [[AntiHero antihero]] who'll kill villains[[note]]Even though he doesn't believe in killing either and some crossovers may take place after he fought Pain and established his no killing rule[[/note]] and will berate certain [[Franchise/{{Batman}} heroes]] for not killing.[[note]]Mainly because the author wants them to despite the fact most heroes will usually have grounded reasons for not killing.[[/note]] Though it's worth noting that quite a few examples use an alternate backstory for Naruto (being trained and joining ANBU, for example) that led to him not developing his [[AllLovingHero canon moral code]] or have him come really close to crossing the DespairEventHorizon at some point in the series and changing because of that.
34	* Minato and Kushina survive the Kyubi attack and have another child. They later focuse all their attention on the favourite child completely [[ParentalNeglect neglecting]] [[TheUnfavorite Naruto]] in the process... For some reason the other child will usually be a girl. There are very few fics that had Minato and Kushina loving both Naruto and the younger child equally. If they did survive. The neglect is rather baffling because Kushina and Minato are actually loving parents who will love their child equally and this can be made into an {{Irony}} as Kushina canonically wishes to have a big happy family...
35	* There are many fics with Sakura having just about every Naruto guy under the age of 30 fall in love with her and it's pretty popular to top this off with AU as well.
36	* Some will have it that Kurama invented the Sharigan mostly just so Naruto can get it.
37	* The reason Kurama attacked Konoha is someone (usually Orochimaru) wearing a Konoha headband killed his (or depending on the story her) cubs used to be common in the early days. This became obsolete when the real cause of Kurama's attack on Konoha was established.
38	* Stories where Naruto's and Sasuke's roles in the franchise are swapped. This is mainly done by having Naruto have a far greater degree of resentment towards the Leaf Village for turning him into the Nine Tails, or by simply not having Iruka present to recognize and set him on the path of good. This reaches a crossroads where during the Chunin exams, Orochimaru decides he wants the power of the Nine Tail Fox and gives the cursed seal to Naruto with the goal of eventually stealing his body. To complete the role-reversal, possibly of losing the closet thing to his new family causes Sasuke to remain loyal to Konaha in order to save Naruto.
39	* Not necessarily a huge part of a story but when Naruto meets someone there may be a debate if Naruto's name stands for 'fishcake' or 'maelstrom'.
40	* Danzo kidnaps Naruto and wipes his memories clean turning him into a WildChild in the process.
41	* Anko, Kakashi, Iruka, or Tsunade adopt Naruto.
42	* A take on what could happen [[AfterTheEnd after the antagonists are defeated]]. May involve BabiesEverAfter.

46	* While not always the main plot of a fanfic, some fanfics have Naruto decide Sasuke is beyond redemption and kill him or capture him and leave him to his punishment. These are often done by people who dislike Sasuke and/or the idea of Naruto continuing to try to bring him back after all he's done.
47	* Back in the early days of the ''Naruto'' fandom, "Naruto retakes the Chūnin Exams" fics use to be common. Then canon trudged on and Naruto became so powerful that pitting him against genin wouldn't be very interesting outside of making it a CrackFic, causing the idea to become obsolete.[[note]]One fine example of just such a CrackFic was ''FanFic/TheWorldsGreatestChuninExamTeam''.[[/note]] Ironically, this plot was used in an OVA where they fix the problem of him being too strong by making rules specifically barring anyone from using senjutsu to make it fair, even though the exams are specifically geared to [[DramaticallyMissingThePoint reward those who cheat and use every advantage they have]]. Of course he breaks the rule and is [[StatusQuoIsGod disqualified from the exam]].
48	* The in/famous plot of [[GenderBender gender bendering]] Naruto into a girl (whose fan-given name is Naruko). Usually she'll end up in either a [[YaoiGenre Yaoi relationship with]] Sasuke (Thus giving [[YaoiFangirl the Yaoi fangirls and boys]] pointless justification for their [[SlashFic slash fics]]) or in a harem [[YuriFan with the ladies]], [[YaoiGenre or with the guys.]]
49	* "Naruko" often appears as Naruto's HalfIdenticalTwin in [=AUs=].
50	* Fanfics where either the Konoha 12 as adults, or their children (usually Boruto and/or Sarada), are [[PeggySue transported into the past]] have been popping up since the manga ended. Most have them go back to the pre-timeskip, usually pre-Chūnin Exam days.
51	* The topic of ChildSoldiers don't come up much despite the series revolving around it. Many fanfics go about what making middle and high school aged kids soldiers can do to their psych and general world view. The "First Kill" and "First Time Seeing A Teammate Die" plots are ever popular.
52	* Boruto, Himawari, or Sarada meeting the ghosts of their grandparents. The ghost of [[spoiler:Neji]] is also common in Boruto's and Himawari's cases, as is [[spoiler:Itachi]] for Sarada.
53	* Many Naruto/Hinata fanfics have quite a few elements in common, besides the [[FanPreferredCouple obvious]] [[RelationshipUpgrade one]]. Hilariously, some of these elements [[AscendedFanon made their way into]] ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'':
54	** Naruto teaching Hinata how to use Shadow Clones and/or the Rasengan.
55	** The Hyuuga Clan either being central to the main plot, or being the focus of a subplot.
56	** Neji and/or Hanabi being important characters to the story.
57	** The Uchiha and the Senju clans not being relevant to the plot, not even in stories in which Sasuke is a main character.
58	** The Byakugan having an evolution/upgrade akin to the Mangekyo Sharingan. Usually, Hinata will be the first one (and sometimes the only one) to awaken this new doujutsu.
59	** Hiashi opposing Naruto and Hinata's relationship. If Hiashi is given a more sympathetic characterization than usual, this role will usually go to some unnamed clan elder(s).
60	** A LoveTriangle between Naruto, Hinata and an incredibly transparent RomanticFalseLead, who's usually Kiba or Sakura, and on rare instances Shino. Sometimes it can be an OC.
61	** Hinata being in an ArrangedMarriage with either Neji or a Hyuuga OC but being in love, or dating, Naruto. This usually goes hand-in-hand with Hiashi opposing her relationship with Naruto.
62	* A sometimes seen one takes place after the Sound/Sand invasion where the Sand Council decides that this shinobi that beat Garaa (IE; Naruto) could become quite powerful someday and getting ties to him would benefit them. So let's send a marriage proposal to the Leaf about hitching him to Temari!
63	* Just like many authors use fics to point out their perceived impression of Kakashi being an awful teacher (see above), there are just as many who do the same with the Ninja Academy. It's very common fanfics in which a Jōnin-sensei tests a team of newly minted Genin, finds that they're much weaker and ill-prepared to be a ninja than expected, asks them what did they learn at the Academy, and gets shocked upon finding how much the standards decayed since the jōnin was an Academy student. This may or may not end in finding out that a spy has been trying to sabotage Konoha's future generations of ninjas by quietly lowering the Academy standards.
64	* Good luck finding ANY fanfiction that covers the Wave Mission that DOESN'T save Haku and/or Zabuza.[[note]][[TemptingFate Well since you mention it]] there ''is FanFic/TimeAndAgain'' where they both die, despite it being a PeggySue fic where Naruto is actively ''trying'' to save them, probably making it a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]].[[/note]]
65	* Many Neji/Tenten fanfics where Neji is Tenten's [[TheLostLenore Lost Lenore]] popped up after he died.
66	* For fans who disliked the canonical pairings, many fanfics (usually Naruto/Sasuke or Naruto/Sakura) revolve around the preferred couple either having an affair, the canonical couple divorcing, or the character being a widow(er) so that they can pair up with someone else.
67	* ''Naruto'' fans have a fandom specific video plot: the "chatroom" video. Most popular circa 2007-2010, they're Youtube videos usually made in Windows Movie Maker where the plot revolves around the Konoha 12 talking to each other in chatrooms. Most are also Naruto/Hinata and Sasuke/Sakura themed.
68	* Characters having to go on seduction-related missions pops up in many fanfics. This is because real ninjas did do such things. How the character reacts and how this effects their relationship if they're already with someone depends on the writer.
69	* "Naruto turns out to be secretly related to Sasuke/Hinata/Sarutobi/Tsunade/etc" fics were common prior to Naruto's heritage being given depth. The manga did eventually canonize Naruto being distantly related to [[spoiler:Tsunade]], [[spoiler:Karin]], and [[spoiler:Nagato]].
70	* Works where either Boruto and Sarada or Inojin and Sarada are ChildhoodFriends are commonplace. The anime itself shows that Boruto and Sarada were probably close when they were very young but ultimately grew apart by the time they were academy students.
71	* [=AUs=] where Kushina either survived the attack or was in a coma for 12-16 years.
72	* After Sasuke returns in ''Naruto Gaiden'', Sakura ends up unexpectedly pregnant again. She usually gives birth to a son (oftentimes a pink haired one).
73	* Taking an important scene where someone either almost died or had a DisneyDeath and having them actually die. Sakura getting hit during the rooftop fight, [[spoiler:Hinata]] dying of her injuries from Pain, etc.
74	* Many fics have pointed out the seemingly ridiculous usefulness of the Shadow Clone learning technique and Naruto subsequently [[TookALevelInBadass takes multiple levels in badass]].
75	* Since the nature of the Tailed Beasts was rather ambiguous during Naruto: Part I, many fics simplify matters by making them conform to ''Manga/InuYasha'' demon standards. Now that we know of their origins and most of the questions are answered, this has decreased, although that unsatisfied minority simply use FanonDiscontinuity and ignore said revelation -- which, granted, is not unheard of for the fandom to begin with.
76	* With the end of the series and the resolution of the romantic pairings, [[ShipSinking upset shipping]] fanfic writers have taken to the task of making their own endings with their favourite pairing (usually Naruto/Sakura) fulfilled by going full FanonDiscontinuity with the canon ending, some of the common trends are:
77	** Making their own versions of chapters 699-700 where Sakura rebukes Sasuke's apology and then hooks up with Naruto.
78	** Revealing that the entire canon ending is in reality [[SchrodingersButterfly taking place in the Infinite Tsukiyomi dreamworld]].
79	** Rewriting the entire [[{{Canon}} canonical]] movie ''[[Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie The Last]]'' to either switch Hinata's role in it with Sakura, or somehow making Naruto pairing up with Sakura instead of Hinata at the end.
80	** Divorcing or outright widowing the characters. This usually happens with people who like Boruto, Himawari, Sarada, Inojin, and/or Shikadai too much to {{retcon}} them away.
81	*** Alternatively to the above, "Cheat Fics", where the characters are portrayed as being unhappy with their marriages, resulting in outright cheating on their spouses.
82	* Even if ''Naruto'''s fandom is [[BrokenBase broken beyond repair]], there is something most fans unanimously dislike: the fact that Naruto never made past Genin in the manga. It would be easier to mention the fanfics that ''doesn't'' give Naruto a(n admittedly well deserved) promotion to chūnin or jōnin.
83	* There are dozens of fan-works where Naruto's parents either didn't die or at minimum one of them, usually Kushina, survived. The anime even explored this in a filler arc (along with the Uchiha massacre never happening).
84	** On that topic, some fanfics have Jiraiya actually taking his status as Naruto’s godfather seriously if Minato and/or Kushina are dead.
85	* A large portion of fanfics often have Naruto's [[BornLucky already insanely good luck]] taken to it's logical extreme with him casually bankrupting multiple casinos.
