->"Let me get this straight... Two members of the Sailor Senshi, champions of love and justice, just attempted a backstreet mugging."
-->--'''Sailor Venus'''

The war with the Dark Kingdom is going badly, and the Sailor Senshi naturally have a problem. Usagi never became Anime/SailorMoon, nor is she the Moon Princess, so the leadership of the Senshi falls to Minako, as Sailor Venus. All of Sailor Mars' attempts to divine the location of the Moon Princess have, so far, failed but just as they are about to give up hope, Mars finally locates the Moon Princess; her name is Takamachi Nanoha, age 16. She's back on planet for her brother's wedding.

That's the good news. The bad news is that Nanoha's still recovering from her injuries incurred during the timeskip between ''A's'' and ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikerS''. Luna attempts to make contact, but is brushed off by Fate, who has made it her personal mission that ''nothing'' interrupt Nanoha's recovery. [[HilarityEnsues Things begin to go downhill from there...]]

Even worse, Queen Beryl has noticed that her most hated rival, the Moon Princess, has returned from wherever she was hiding, and she's not about to let things go, no sir.

!!This fanfic contains examples of:
* AbdicateTheThrone: [[spoiler: After the final battle, Nanoha announces that she will ''not'' claim her title as Queen of the Moon Kingdom after allowing the Sailor Senshi to dissolve. As this essentially means the Moon Kingdom is no more, Luna does not take it well at all]].
* AbsurdlyYouthfulMother: It's lampshaded in the ending when [[spoiler:Fate's older- but biologically younger- sister Alicia]] finds it strange that Fate has adopted a child younger than her.
* AHandfulForAnEye: Ami throws a handful of magically created ice crystals into the face of a youma to distract it long enough to transform.
* AlliterativeTitle: Chapter 12, "Strike, Scapegoat, Sacrifice".
* AlternateUniverse: Nanoha got injured at 16, not 12 like in canon. This is an author-induced change invoked partially to reduce the squick factor in the [[MayDecemberRomance Nanoha/Mamoru]] pairing and partially to assist with the problem of two middle-school students living on their own and not attending school (high school being quasi-optional in Japan).
* AndTheAdventureContinues: Nanoha, Fate, Arf, Hayate, and the Wolkenritter continue their TSAB missions in the ending.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Fate scolds Nanoha for overexerting herself again, telling her how much she's worried about her.
* AnvilOnHead: Mercury fires a Shabon Spray Freezing into a cloud, creating the largest hailstone in history, [[spoiler:which lands on top of Zoicite and smushes him.]]
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: In the epilogue, [[spoiler:when Luna is horrified that Nanoha has no intention of reclaiming her kingdom, Nanoha asks her a very pointed question. "Can anyone here name someone not present who has even ''heard'' of the Moon Kingdom who didn't learn of it from someone in this room?" Only Yuuno is able to respond in the affirmative, mentioning a couple of dissertations he read on dead kingdoms while researching Metallia.]]
* ArtisticLicense: At one point, Fate is reluctant to wear an open-backed dress, implied to be from her whipping scars. Based on what was seen in the series, Precia only whipped Fate from the ''front''.
* AwesomeByAnalysis:
** The TSAB considers the Senshi this. They managed to fight against a foe with superior power and numbers on their own, with little in the way of supplemental aid, little-to-no training, and no relief, for ''over a year'' before they finally received reinforcements from TSAB agents who were alerted to the situation. Fate doesn't think that she could last a few ''weeks'' in a similar situation.
** Ami in particular fights this way. Being the magically weakest of the senshi she looks for advantages and thinks of what she can do with what she has to turn a victory.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Alicia is revived first through a infusion of life energy and then by the Ginzuisho.]]
* BadassBoast: Downplayed to great effect when [[spoiler: [[BadassTeacher Nanoha]] reveals that she's recovered enough to actively help the Sailor Senshi with their training.]]
--> [[spoiler: After the debriefing ended, the Senshi went outside for a training session. Unusually, instead of remaining inside to supervise at a distance, Nanoha joined them, idly sipping on a can of juice as she did so. The barrier went up, and the Senshi transformed. Nanoha called up her Barrier Jacket, finished the juice, and threw the can in the air.]]

--> [[spoiler: A ball of pink light appeared and flew at the falling can. The can bounced off the shot, which then turned around to strike the can. As the Senshi all watched the bouncing can, Nanoha addressed them.]]

--> [[spoiler: "You may be wondering why I've come out to join you." She began. "Thanks to Hotaru-chan, my Linker Core has fully recovered. Shamal cleared me to use magic again last night. As a result, I am now able to play a direct part in your training.]]

--> [[spoiler: "While I'm doing this, please remember that I've spent more than half a year recovering from my injuries. I've probably gotten a little out of shape in that time. So take it easy on me, okay?"]]

--> [[spoiler: As Nanoha smiled sweetly, the can went flying, ricocheted off of a telephone pole, and landed perfectly into a garbage can.]]
* BadBoss: When anything goes wrong with her plans, Beryl will torture someone for being at best incompetent and at worst a potential traitor.
* BadassFamily: The Takamachi family are remnants of a ninja clan. Most of the wedding guests are armed. Apart from Nanoha, both Shiro and Miyuki had their chances to shine.
* BadassNormal:
** Miyuki, who [[spoiler:after being kidnapped by Nephrite after a failed attempt at setting up a trap for him, wakes up in the Dark Kingdom in the throne room, surrounded by Youma, Nephrite, and Queen Beryl. She then proceeds to kneel before Beryl as she is told to for just long enough to have them start gloating, and then immediately sprints towards Beryl, pulls out two knives she had hidden on her, fights the Youma, forcing them to kill each other through friendly fire, positions herself so that Nephrite's attack hits Queen Beryl, and then comes within a hair's breadth of bisecting Beryl from head to toe before she gets taken out by a desperate but successful attack from Beryl. She still manages to cut Beryl's face.]]
** Oddly enough, Usagi Tsukino; even though she is simply a normal school girl in this timeline, she still managed to distract some monsters that were trying to kill Naru.
* BerserkButton:
** Attacking any of the close family of Fate and Nanoha will make them turn off the non-lethal PowerLimiter normally in place and they will ''end you''. First shown when Nanoha [[NoBodyLeftBehind disintegrates]] Jadeite with a [[WaveMotionGun Divine Buster]], and shown for Fate when [[spoiler: Precia lost her temper at Alicia and hit her with a lighting spell.]] Suddenly, [[{{BFS}} Big Fat]] LaserBlade through the chest.
** Ami doesn't appreciate [[spoiler:Alicia talking about Precia without knowing of her actions- which include putting Ami's mother into a coma]]. Although it gets much more dangerous when she encounters [[spoiler: agents of the Dark Kingdom trying to kill her comatose mother]]. Maybe the villains should just avoid threatening any relatives of any member of the main cast just to be on the safe side.
** Nanoha is a very responsible and dedicated person so the irresponsibility of her past life infuriates her.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Conventional wisdom states that linker cores can't be healed by magic. Once someone has strained or damaged theirs then all they can do to heal it is stop using magic for an extended period of time. [[spoiler: Hotaru's magical ability is so great that she can ignore this supposed impossibility and drastically shorten Nanoha's recovery time. Shamal then learns that Hotaru has Triple S potential as a mage.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: Sailor Venus pulls one of these in Chapter 5 when Jadeite's forces attack the Takamachi wedding, distracting Jadeite at a crucial moment and giving Nanoha enough time to change into her Barrier Jacket and charge up the [[WaveMotionGun Divine Buster]].
* BleedEmAndWeep: Fate, [[spoiler:after killing Precia]].
-->[[spoiler: All I ever wanted was for her to smile at me the way she always smiled at you [Alicia]. Just once. Was that really too much to ask?]]
* BloodFromTheMouth: Precia, who is dying from her radiation poisoning.
* BloodSplatteredWeddingDress: Miyuki's bridesmaid's gown, after the fight breaks out. The actual bride's dress did not end up like that (not as severely, anyway), as Shinobu wasn't participating in the fight.
* BondOneLiner: "Was there anybody ''else'' who had a reason why these two should not be wed?"
* BouquetToss: Minako would have caught it, if she hadn't [[spoiler: immediately rushed to Nanoha's side after her collapse]].
* BoxedCrook: The Sailor Senshi, having assaulted Fate and Arf in their attempts to contact Nanoha, get the same treatment as Nanoha's [[HeelFaceTurn former]] [[DefeatMeansFriendship enemies]] did, avoiding formal punishment by means of community service.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler: Alicia]] and Hotaru go through quick and milder forms of this when they learn about what their parents are up to; their friendship provides a shelter for them both.
* BrokenPedestal: After learning what happened to Serenity, the Senshi are greatly shaken by it because they had built her up as this ideal princess. However, they still stand by Nanoha's side, with Luna believing that Nanoha's opposite attitude would make her a better ruler.
* CallingTheOldWomanOut:
** [[spoiler:Nanoha plainly tells the spirit of Queen Serenity that she and her advisers failed to keep Princess Serenity's behavior in check or even groomed her to be a responsible leader. Therefore, they are partly responsible for the disaster that ended the Moon Kingdom. Furthermore, Nanoha [[ThatManIsDead insists her name is not Serenity]], and that [[YoureNotMyFather her mother is Momoko Takamachi.]]]]
** [[spoiler: Fate to Precia, after Precia loses it and attacks Alicia in anger after Alicia herself called HER MOM out on Fate's treatment.]]
* CastFromHitPoints: Hotaru's healing magic, because of some unidentified force that is draining her of life. As such, if the problem is not resolved it will become CastFromLifespan as her internal organs stop working. Fans of Sailor Moon will recognize the root of the problem. Nanoha and Shamal both realize the similarities to Hayate's situation, and share some of the information with Hotaru. It's ultimately averted when [[spoiler:Shamal and Sailor Mars destroy Mistress 9.]] This gives Hotaru a vital role in the hospital when it's flooded with casualties from the Dark Kingdom's attack.
* CharacterDeath: [[spoiler: The following people are killed by the end of the story: Jadeite, Precia Testarossa, Zoicite, Souichi Tomoe, Mistress 9, Kunzite, Nephrite, Beryl, Metallia.]]
* ChekhovsSkill:
** Sailor Venus lands a blow on Signum during a sword fighting lesson due to knowing a maneuver that's very similar to a Belkan form with one small variation at the end. Since Signum is expecting it, the variation slips past her defense. She later uses the same maneuver with the Belkan final strike [[spoiler: to kill Kunzite.]]
** The fact that Mars could sense the Jewel Seeds when they were activated during ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha''. [[spoiler: After [[BigBad Queen]] [[Anime/SailorMoon Beryl]] stole them from [[PersonOfMassDestruction Hayate]], this ability was used to track down the location of her SupervillainLair.]]
* ChronicHeroSyndrome:
** Nanoha. Better than half the conflict in the first part of the story stems from this; if the Senshi succeed in asking Nanoha for her help, she'll try to help them as best she can [[HeroicRROD regardless of what it may cost her]].
** Hotaru is willing to heal anyone she sees get hurt even though she knows that most of her patients hate her and will only hate her more afterwards. This behavior doesn't change even after learning that [[spoiler:due to her CastFromHitPoints problem, continuing to do so could result in her ending up crippled or dead.]]
* CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds: Mamoru gets paired off with Rei in one of the omakes. [[spoiler: It's made official by the end of the fic.]]
* CombinedEnergyAttack: [[spoiler: Moonlight Breaker is created by combining Raising Heart and the Ginzuisho. This is an attack that takes Starlight Breaker up to eleven. To make it MORE accurate it takes the Starlight Breaker from [[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikerS StrikerS Episode 25]] (Already Starlight Breaker up to eleven) and take [[NoKillLikeOverkill THAT]] up to eleven.]]
* ConservationOfNinjitsu: Miyuki's fight versus the youma in [[spoiler: Beryl's throne room]] definitely qualifies; one human vs double digit youma. The narration explains by way of DeadlyDodging; because there were so many of them, they were more likely to hit each other than Miyuki. Double points as the Takamachi family also happens to be the last remnant of the Fuwa ninja clan.
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: A common theme in [[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha MGLN's first]] [[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs two seasons]], and in full force here. Venus even points this out in Chapter 5.
* CrazyPrepared: ''This'' trope, more than anything, is why Jadeite's attempt on Nanoha's life failed. ''Everyone'' at the wedding who could fight came armed and prepared to do so, ''just in case''. Justified if you've seen ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'' because you ''know'' [[SomeoneSetUpUsTheBomb what happened]] the last time the Takamachi family had a get-together.
* CripplingOverspecialization: [[spoiler: The main reason Hayate lost badly to Beryl. In a different location, she might have won with [[PersonOfMassDestruction her abilities]] but [[SquishyWizard she doesn't have any close quarters combat experience]].]]
* CurbStompBattle:
** Nanoha, meet Jadeite. Jadeite, meet Nanoha's [[WaveMotionGun Divine Buster]].
** Both of the attempts by Tuxedo Kamen and the Inner Senshi to get rid of Fate fail badly. The second time so jeopardized their mission that without Beryl's actions, they wouldn't even be allies.
** [[spoiler: Vivio fights Chibi-Usa in an omake at the end of chapter 10 and the 'fight' lasts 10 seconds]]
** [[{{Muggle}} Miyuki]] vs [[BigBad Beryl]], an army of [[{{Mooks}} Youma]] and [[TheDragon Nephrite]]. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for Beryl and co, [[BadassNormal Miyuki]]'s last name is [[BadassFamily ''Takamachi'']], meaning she is the one doing the stomping. Beryl only wins by pure luck.]]
** [[spoiler:Beryl vs Hayate goes badly for Hayate because her magic isn't suited for fighting anything smaller than a cityblock. Beryl had the edge in close combat.]]
** [[spoiler:[[SuperMode Lunar Excellion]] Nanoha vs [[GreaterScopeVillain Metallia]]. [[OneHitKill One Attack]]: [[CombinedEnergyAttack Moonlight Breaker]].]]
* DarkerAndEdgier: Mildly so. The ''Sailor Moon'' half of the plot has some faint overtones of ''Literature/SailorNothing''; the war has turned into a stalemate, the Senshi are demoralized and all of them ''really'' want to go back to their old lives, [[TheHeart Usagi]] isn't around to hold the group together, and the girls treat each other more like coworkers than the TrueCompanions they were in canon because they have nothing in common with each other.
* DarkIsEvil: This is why Luna thought that Fate was a 'dark senshi'; her barrier jacket is similar to a senshi uniform but black. Eventually she is convinced otherwise.
* DeadlyDodging: A key part of Miyuki's strategy when attempting to [[spoiler: take out Beryl]]; her mundane weapons can't kill the youma but their magical attacks can kill each other.
* DeconstructionCrossover:
** Applies some of this to Princess Serenity's actions: ditching bodyguards put her life in danger, leaving the country for the better weather could cause an international incident, and the PrinceCharming on Earth might not have been so charming underneath. In short, there were many possible RealLife consequences to Princess Serenity's romantic encounter with Endymion. Nanoha points out that while the dangers from these actions never materialized, said actions were incredibly irresponsible and reflected very poorly on her sense of duty, which was especially important given the role Serenity was inheriting.
** The senshi's plan of being all reincarnated and fighting the forces of evil is all well and good- unless one of them moves, thus removing a fairly vital piece of the defensive plan of the planet. Nanoha's absence leads to a year-and-a-half long stalemate in the war against the Dark Kingdom, and since the Senshi had no plans on what to do if the princess was never found, the Dark Kingdom looks like it might have won by simple attrition.
** The concept of reincarnated lovers is taken to task as well. Since Princess Serenity and Nanoha are completely different people, Nanoha and Mamouru have practically no chemistry, [[spoiler: and Nanoha gets together with Fate anyway]]. Worse, Nanoha actually feels horrified at the thought that her past life is influencing her in ways she cannot control.
** Nanoha tears the "I was too busy to keep an eye on her" excuse that Serenity uses to shreds, pointing out that ''her'' parents were bakers, and even though they were absent for large portions of her childhood due to medical reasons, they ''still'' managed to instill a strong sense of right and wrong, not to mention basic manners, decency, and a strong will.
* DespairEventHorizon: Princess Serenity is strongly implied to have hit this once Beryl's forces killed off her lover and all of her friends, which is why she committed suicide. Nanoha, on reflection, doesn't understand this attitude, not getting that Serenity was a peacetime ruler with no exposure to such things, while Nanoha is a battle-hardened warrior.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Discussed when Nanoha confronts Queen Serenity and points out that several things could have gone horribly wrong during Princess Serenity's constant gallivanting to Earth to visit Endymion. She could have been assassinated by her enemies, or Endymion could have taken advantage of her to turn her into a puppet queen, and the fact that nothing ultimately came of it is no excuse.
* DiscoDan: Despite all reason, Luna continues to act as if the Moon Kingdom is still in existence, just severely diminished. This leads to problems when she refuses to explain herself to Fate during the early chapters due to her, now nonexistent, position as one of Queen Serenity's advisers. [[spoiler: Also, she does NOT take it well when Nanoha states that she has no intention to revive the Moon Kingdom.]]
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler: Alicia Testarossa]] has this happen to her ''twice''. [[spoiler: She dies from the accident in canon, gets brought back to life by Precia using stolen life energy, [[TearJerker slowly dies as it runs out]], and is then resurrected ''again'' by the [[AncientArtifact Ginzuisho]] courtesy of Nanoha, who is coincidentally also known as [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast The White Devil]]]].
* DoNotCallMePaul: Inverted, [[spoiler: Nanoha rejects her past name and sticks with her birth name. At least part of this is due to the IHatePastMe trope further down the page.]]
* DramaticIrony: Minako is glad that the reincarnated moon princess is someone who takes their responsibilities seriously, unlike ''[[MythologyGag Usagi]]'', who is a ditzy slacker.
* DrivenToSuicide: Like in canon, Princess Serenity kills herself after Prince Endymion is killed. Unlike canon, when Nanoha finds out, she's piping mad because her selfish actions might have cost many other lives, not to mention rendering all the sacrifices her friends made to allow her to escape utterly ''worthless.''
* DueToTheDead: Rei holds a funeral for all of the dead bodies in the Moon Palace.
* DungeonBypass: In the final battle. Rather than have to deal with the unfamiliar floor plan, Nanoha just activates Excellion Mode and blows a hole straight through most of Beryl's base.
* EarlyBirdCameo: [[spoiler:Alicia's first best friend on Earth? Hotaru Tomoe.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: [[spoiler: Nanoha and Fate's friends have had a betting pool going on as to when they'd hook up; not ''if'', ''when''. It's been going on for years now.]]
* FastballSpecial: Jupiter tosses Venus during a training session with Nanoha.
* {{Foil}}: Princess Serenity and Nanoha are two sides of the same coin. There is a distinction in both their personalities and their professions.
** The former neglected her royal duties for romance and because of this is unprepared to deal with a crisis or the day-to-day business of ruling. The later took her responsibilities so seriously she almost killed herself with exhaustion and neglected her relationships so much she had no idea her brother was getting married.
** Nanoha acts as if Princess Serenity were not an heir to a stable, prosperous monarchy who would fall over the DespairEventHorizon once she saw her friends and loved ones brutally killed. Instead Nanoha expects Serenity to act like a seasoned, battle-hardened veteran (like Nanoha herself) by hiking up her skirts, escaping and rallying her people to her banner despite the fact that Princess Serenity was literally cradling the cooling body of the love of her life at the time.
* FingerTwitchingRevival: [[spoiler: Alicia, revealing that stolen life energy can be used to revive her.]]
* FireForgedFriends: Averted with the Senshi. Without Usagi to get them all to work together and to overcome their differences, they view each other as co-workers at best and it's implied that they likely won't keep in close contact once the war is over.
* {{Flanderization}}:
** Luna's character has been stripped down to her loyalty to the Moon Kingdom. See the entry for DiscoDan; that's more or less ''her entire purpose'' in the story.
** Beryl's VillainousCrush on Endymion was relatively minor in the manga (the reader only learns about it as she dies) and her main goal is to find the Silver Crystal and revive Metallia. Here, she's so obsessed with taking Mamoru as her consort and blaming Serenity for "stealing" him that she completely fails to realize that he and Nanoha are ''not'' in a ReincarnationRomance (besides Miyuki spelling it out for her, Nanoha and Mamoru hardly interact at all). It's also treated as if she and Endymion had been in a relationship before he met Serenity, while the manga gave no indication he even knew she existed.
** This is rather oddly done with Venus's powers. In the manga, she largely used her senshi attacks. While she did use the magical sword they found on the moon, that was only for the end of the first story arc and [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness it was never brought up again after]]. Here, Venus almost ''never'' uses her senshi attacks and the fanfiction treats it as if it were her primary means of fighting, both in her past and present life, was with a sword. The same is done for Hotaru's healing abilities, which she used once or twice in the manga and which were forgotten in favor of her awakening as Sailor Saturn, but here are treated as her primary powers. [[spoiler: Granted, she doesn't awaken ''as'' Sailor Saturn in this story, so they are her only powers as far as anyone knows.]]
* FromBadToWorse: The day of the wedding Nanoha's agitated her Linker Core ''again'' by an unknown amount, while Beryl's discovered that letting Metallia absorb the magic of the Jewel Seeds is giving the monster a major boost towards revival, and now Beryl wants the rest of them.
* GameBreakingInjury: One of the factors about Nanoha that makes Fate keep rebuffing Luna. After Nanoha kills Jadeite, she faints. Shamal then orders Nanoha not to use ''any'' magic for the foreseeable future. [[spoiler:At the cost of temporarily losing the use of her legs, Hotaru Tomoe was able to heal Nanoha to avoid this trope.]]
* GeekyTurnOn: Ami becomes interested in Yuuno after he gives a short lecture on how many different ways there are to use magic.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: When Nanoha feels overwhelmed by Princess Serenity's memories and fears they're affecting her psyche, [[spoiler:Fate decides to [[FirstKiss make her]] [[RelationshipUpgrade feelings known.]]]]
* GroinAttack: [[spoiler:Miyuki sends a knee between Nephrite's legs, enabling Vita to kill him]].
* HandicappedBadass: [[LateArrivalSpoiler Who else but Nanoha?]] [[spoiler:She vaporizes Jadelite with a damaged linker core. Thanks to Hotaru Tomoe she has her Linker Core restored and is able to fight and train again.]]
* HappilyAdopted:
** [[spoiler:Alicia by Lindy just like Fate and just as happily.]]
** [[spoiler:Hotaru, by the Takamachis and presumably happy too]].
* HealingHands: Hotaru makes friends with Alicia due to this, [[spoiler:heals Nanoha,]] and then helps Ami's mother in the hospital in Chapter 16.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler:Precia, in her dying moments, realizes that she should have treated Fate as a daughter and used her remaining time to set things right.]]
-->Forgive me, [[spoiler:Linith]]. You were right. You were right...
* HeroicBSOD: Mamoru falls into a funk after [[spoiler:Nanoha and Fate get together and he realizes just how unlikely he was to get together with her]].
* HeroicSacrifice:
** [[spoiler:Averted for Nanoha herself, who survives defeating Metallia despite the presumption that the strain would kill her]].
** [[spoiler: Downplayed for Hotaru, who lost the use of her legs in healing Nanoha.]]
** [[spoiler: Serenity's bodyguards, at the Fall of the Moon Kingdom, gave their lives so that Queen Serenity and Princess Serenity could get away. Unfortunately, Princess Serenity chose to kill herself after seeing all her friends and loved ones perish, rendering those sacrifices meaningless and forcing the Queen to cast the resurrection spell.]]
* IChooseToStay: [[spoiler: Ami, in a roundabout way. Of the four senshi she alone chooses to go to Mid-Childa to study magic, though by all hints her role would be more like Yuuno's than Nanoha's.]]
* IdiotBall: Two justified examples.
** Luna and the Senshi (excluding [[TheLeader Venus]] and [[TheSmartGirl Mercury]]) make a number of bad decisions for the sake of the early conflict. These include attacking first and refusing to explain themselves later. This is justified by ''both'' sides completely misinterpreting the initial communications, with Fate thinking that Luna is a broken familiar and Luna thinking that Fate is a Dark Magical Girl.
** The TSAB not only leaves [[spoiler:Hayate]] unprotected during the battle for Tokyo, but does so while [[spoiler:she has the Jewel Seeds in her Device. This results in Beryl defeating her and stealing them]]. Because of the widespread nature of Beryl's attack, everyone that could fight was necessary on the ground; no one left for guarding. Still, [[spoiler: the jewel seeds]] should have been stored somewhere else.
* IHatePastMe: [[spoiler:Nanoha disapproves of how Princess Serenity lived her life, claiming that the princess was very irresponsible. As such it became an AwfulTruth for the Senshi as their sacrifices were wasted due to Serenity's suicide.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal:
** The Senshi are tired of fighting a shadow war and want nothing more than to go back to mundane schoolgirls. [[spoiler: They get it in the end when Nanoha absolves them of their duty to her, although Ami chooses to become a mage scholar like Yuuno.]]
** [[spoiler: While he did not explicitly ''want'' this, Artemis is more accepting of becoming a normal housecat than Luna is.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice:
** [[spoiler:Precia, after she crosses the MoralEventHorizon in Fate's eyes by hurting Alicia, is run through with a laser sword.]]
** [[spoiler: Zoicite is impaled several times simultaneously by [[WeakButSkilled Mercury's]] "Fractal Ice Prison".]]
* ImpliedDeathThreat: [[spoiler: After [[BadassNormal Miyuki]] has been captured by [[BigBad Beryl]], she gives one that borders on YouAreAlreadyDead.]]
-->[[spoiler: '''Miyuki''': You want to know about my sister? Fine. She's got more experience than all of the Senshi ''combined'', and enough power to flatten a city. Some of her friends are even stronger. And you just did something guaranteed to make her mad. Sometime very, very soon, you will learn exactly why Vita dubbed my sister the White Devil, and if you're really lucky, your end will come as quickly as the guy you sent to break my father's arm did.]]
** [[spoiler: When Nanoha does her DungeonBypass in the final chapter, Beryl realizes that Miyuki was being serious. Said realization is the reason for Beryl's OhCrap.]]
* ImpostorForgotOneDetail: [[spoiler:The youma impersonating Reinforce Eins fails to realize that Signum is in Unison Form, which would indicate the presence of a third person.]]
* ImpromptuTracheotomy: [[spoiler:Kunzite is stabbed in the throat by Venus.]]
* IncrediblyLamePun: The author's note at the end of chapter 14 begins with, "All hail Zoicite." [[spoiler:He was killed when Ami dropped a car sized hailstone on him earlier in the chapter.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: During the visit to the Moon Kingdom, Yuuno gushes about how amazing it is that all the bodies are so well preserved... until Makoto points out that the only reason he thinks that is because he doesn't recognize anyone, which the Senshi all do.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: In an omake, Jupiter's reaction to having the war end [[spoiler:because the princess is a lesbian and not interested in Endymion]] is to look for a heavily stocked liquor cabinet. The rest of the Senshi agree with her.
* InterrogatedForNothing: [[spoiler: No, Beryl. Nephrite did ''not'' sell you out, trade information to the Senshi, and knowingly bring an armed assassin into your royal presence. For that matter the only information the "assassin" had (Venus' name and Serenity's street address) was never asked for when ''she'' was put to the question.]]
* InUniverseFactoidFailure: [[spoiler:In the final chapter, one of the [[{{Mooks}} youma]], who happens to be capable of VoluntaryShapeshifting, uses Reinforce's form to get close to Hayate and Signum. Unfortunately for her, she exposes herself by addressing them as "you two" while Signum is in unison with Rein Zwei. Rein Zwei calls her out on it, and Signum takes her out.]]
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler:Nephrite vs. Miyuki. He hates her for trying to lure him into a trap, trying to kill Beryl, and making Beryl think he betrayed her. She hates them for their attacks on her family and him personally for toying with her heart.]]
* JawDrop: The Senshi, when they find out that Nanoha is gay in the fic proper, is open-mouthed silence.
* KarmicDeath: Precia's can be seen as this since [[spoiler: she is killed by Fate, who wouldn't have thought to do so if she hadn't abused Fate and, immediately prior to her end, Alicia]].
* KickTheMoralityPet: [[spoiler:Precia attacking Alicia during a fight with Fate is what pisses Fate off enough to actually kill her.]]
* KilledMidSentence: [[spoiler:Kunzite, by Venus, in the throat.]]
-->'''[[spoiler:Kunzite]]''': Ha! You think I...
* KillItWithIce: Mercury does this very thoroughly when she faces [[spoiler:Zoicite. First she locks him inside a large razor-edged fractal ice sculpture, then while he's trying to get out, she drops a car-sized hailstone on his head.]] The narration devotes an entire paragraph describing ''exactly'' how deadly ice can be.
-->Ice wasn't a very visually impressive weapon. It didn't have the obviously destructive power of [[KillItWithFire fire]] or [[ShockAndAwe lightning]]. But that didn't make it harmless. Regular patterns of freezing and thawing could eventually tear apart even the finest construction. A broken piece of ice could cut like a knife. And the destruction caused by a hailstorm could be just as devastating as a wildfire in its own way, damaging buildings and vehicles, ruining crops in some cases even knocking down trees. If the stones were large enough or coming down heavily enough, they could even kill.
* KillScreen: Nanoha reaches this in the Sailor V game, which everyone had previously thought to be {{Unwinnable}} - ''on her first try''. It required her getting a million points when the previous high score was 150,000. The game ended gracefully without anything strange happening beyond getting extra prizes (a disguise pen, a senshi communicator, and the ''Anime/SailorMoon'' transformation brooch.) Justified in that it's actually a Senshi training simulator in disguise and Nanoha is already a veteran MagicalGirl.
* KneelBeforeFrodo: The four Senshi kneel before Nanoha, prompting Hayate to take a picture before reminding them that when their monarch is in uniform, they must bow rather than kneel.
* LadyAndKnight: Serenity and Endymion had this sort of relationship and it is replicated with Fate. Normally, both of them are knights but because of Nanoha's injuries, Fate takes up the role of White Knight for the Bright Lady, protecting her from enemies and screening petitioners, so to speak, because her lady's chronic heroic syndrome is a threat to her recovery.
* LastNameBasis: Used among the Senshi to indicate that rather than being TrueCompanions, they would not voluntarily associate with one another. Hayate also calls Mars "Hino-san".
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: In chapter 9, Miyuki mentions how the local girls seem to think that the attack that ruined Kyouya's wedding was a dramatic fight scene out of an anime.
* LivingOnBorrowedTime: [[spoiler:Alicia, though the time isn't so much borrowed as it is stolen by her mother and given to her as life energy. This is something she does not take learning well.]]
* LoveRuinsTheRealm: As Nanoha points out, the Dark Kingdom invasion is only one possible negative outcome of Serenity's trips to Earth and affair with Endymion.
* LovingAShadow: Nanoha wonders if Mamoru is doing this with her with his past life memories of Princess Serenity.
* MamaBear: [[spoiler:Precia, even more than in canon. Torturing a clone isn't enough, she stoops to the outright murder of the terminally ill in order to keep Alicia alive. Anyone that tries to stop her mets the same fate. Ironically, this includes Alicia herself when she protects Fate from Precia's whipping and is attacked with lightening in return.]]
* MarriedToTheJob: Nanoha.
-->"...as far as (Yuuno) could tell, Nanoha was married to her job. At least, she had been up until her hospital stay forced her to realize that the only serious relationship she had gotten into had turned abusive..."
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: Beryl treats the small cut on her face given to her by [[spoiler:Miyuki]] as if it were horrifically disfiguring.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:Nephrite posses as Masato Sanjouin to inflitrate Midori-ya as Miyuki's boyfriend.]] After Miyuki [[spoiler:tries to kill Beryl after being kidnapped, he was locked up under suspicion of being a mole]].
* MoralMyopia:
** Luna is determined to see Nanoha become the moon princess despite how little Nanoha cares about it.
** Hayate tells the Senshi that she could charge them with assault despite the fact that Earth is an Unadministered World and the TSAB has no legal authority there.
* MundaneUtility: Ami uses her [[AnIcePerson ice powers]] to make a glass of lemonade into a snow cone in one omake. She later uses them to chill a lukewarm glass of water [[spoiler:right in front of her mother. Bye bye masquerade.]]
* MurderTheHypotenuse:
** This is the major reason Beryl started her rebellion in the first place, jealous that Prince Endymion chose Princess Serenity over herself. The pettiness of starting a war for this is {{Lampshaded}} both by the cast and in an [[HilariousOuttakes Omake]] in which [[spoiler:Nanoha ends the whole war when she points out [[LesYay she's gay]].]]
** [[spoiler: After Miyuki is interrogated by Beryl]], she says to her face that Nanoha has no interest in Endymion at all, she's perfectly happy with Fate and if Beryl hadn't ordered the attack on the wedding, Nanoha wouldn't have gotten involved. Beryl goes into a combination of VillainousBSOD and denial mode.
* MythologyGag:
** Nanoha notices that the bodyguard of a family friend bears a close resemblance to Fate, referencing said bodyguard's existence in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3''. At least some wedding guests thought they ''were'' siblings.
** At the end of ''Manga/CodenameSailorV'', Minako was cursed to never find happiness because she would always put her duty ahead of her own desires. At the wedding, she would have been the one to catch the bouquet if she hadn't immediately ran to Nanoha's side when she collapsed. [[spoiler:After Metallia is finally defeated her duty is finally relieved and she can pursue her desires.]]
** An early chapter mentions a dream Nanoha had about eating a large pile of sweet potatoes, only to wake up and realize that she had been chewing on Yuuno (In ferret form) in her sleep. This was taken from one of the cut to commercial scenes in ''As''.
* NeverBringAKnifeToAGunfight: [[spoiler: Inverted. The reason Hayate loses against Beryl is because [[CripplingOverspecialization her skillset means she's effectively bringing a cannon to a knife fight]].]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Nanoha states that despite the past senshi's valient efforts, Serenity's suicide made all their sacrifices utterly pointless, not even attempting to take advantage of the time their struggles bought her.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: If Beryl hadn't decided to attack the Moon Princess, the TSAB would have remained ignorant of the problem and Nanoha would have simply gone to the wedding and left again afterwards. With the way the war against the Senshi was going (a war of attrition that the Senshi were slowly losing), they probably would have won if they hadn't attacked Nanoha.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: In an omake, Fate decides to punish Nanoha for breaking her convalescence leave ''again'' by tying her to a bed. Hayate walks in, notices their state of undress, and comes to a kinkier conclusion. In her defense, [[spoiler: they were officially a couple by this point.]]
* OffhandBackhand: Jupiter gets several during the battle for Tokyo. It helps that she was put through TrainingFromHell that was meant to improve her reflexes, among other things.
* OhCrap:
** While not shown outright, it is highly suggested that the Senshi started feeling this as Nanoha was now cleared to take a direct hand in their [[TrainingFromHell training.]]
** Shamal and Nanoha have a mild form of this when they learn just how powerful Hotaru really is; the first ever SSS!
** Beryl gets it bad when she nearly gets taken out by a DungeonBypass and then realizes exactly why Serenity's reincarnation is known as [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast The White Devil]].
* OutOfCharacterMoment: Some see Nanoha's [[CallingTheOldManOut Calling The Old Woman Out]] as this, not necessarily because of her arguments (Nanoha is considerably more responsible than Usagi or Serenity), but because throughout, Nanoha is blunt and holds nothing back. Others suggest that her emotional state at the time influenced it.
* PapaWolf: Shirou tells Jadeite that he won't stand for people threatening his daughter, but soon afterward, Jadeite breaks his arm, making his threat hollow.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:After Precia successfully revives Alicia, she settles down on Earth and spends her time just trying to be a good mother to her. She only returns to her villainous ways after Alicia begins to relapse.]]
* PlotHole: It's a downplayed case due to the PointOfDivergence. In canon ''Sailor Moon'' it took a year at the very most (assuming anime canon, in the manga it took much less than that) for Beryl to accumulate enough power to awaken Metallia even when Sailor Moon was foiling her plans left and right. The reason for this is that [[FridgeBrilliance Beryl's goal is two-fold: get Endemyion for her own and annihilate Serenity. Thus, she subconsciously foils her own plans because she has no idea who Serenity is and doesn't want her goal to be half-done.]]
* PointOfDivergence: According to the prologue, it seems the whole reason that 'Princess Serenity' was reborn as Nanoha rather than Usagi (who does exist, just not as anyone significant) was because Queen Serenity flubbed the reincarnation spell due to her injuries.
* PoorCommunicationKills:
** This drives along the first part of the story. Luna attempts to get into contact with Nanoha through Fate, but doesn't bother to explain anything aside from the fact that she wants to talk with Nanoha, since she's used to having the authority to request such things with no questions asked. Thus, Fate just assumes that it's just unwanted trouble for the recovering Nanoha that can be passed to the [=TSAB=] and that Luna is a nutcase when she gets more persistent and still doesn't give her a coherent explanation.
** Luna never bothers to explain to Fate ''why'' she needs to talk to Nanoha. it is [[JustifiedTrope justified]] when Artemis later explains that was how he and Luna used to do things back during the Moon Kingdom; they're used to having the authority to get things done without being questioned. This is further worsened when she sees Fate's outfit and assumes that she's a Dark Magical Girl, and, being WrongGenreSavvy, thinks that the Princess is under the control of an evil being.
** Fate thinks that Luna is a familiar (like Arf) or a shapeshifter mage (like Yuuna) and so she doesn't think the situation is urgent. The TSAB has plenty of powerful mages so there's no reason (to her knowledge) that Luna needs Nanoha specifically. Because of this, Luna thinks that Fate thinks that her problem is a "minor bureaucratic issue to be passed to the next desk while she goes on a coffee break."
** If you go over the opening chapters and look at what each party is saying to the other from only one perspective at a time, it's more understandable as to ''why'' said poor communication turned out so disastrously. As Fate said, "It doesn't matter what is true, but what the person ''believes'' to be true."
* PowerCreepPowerSeep: Naturally, there has to be a bit of power level balancing to be done with this sort of crossover, given the two different magics at work.
** For instance, Jupiter is said to have knocked out two TSAB {{Mooks}} with her bare hands; Jupiter is the only one of the Inners with any kind of formal martial arts training, and the average TSAB mook is a SquishyWizard due to the TSAB putting more focus on magical combat than hand-to-hand. When Makoto trains with Zafira, who ''is'' extremely skilled, she gets her ass kicked several times before she wins a spar.
** WordOfGod says the Senshi are badasses for holding off the Dark Kingdom for a year by themselves and their power levels are roughly equivalent to A-rank mages by the Bureau's reckoning, which is a significant boost over their usual performance. However the TSAB considers the Senshi A-class in ''raw power'' because as far as they're concerned the Senshi are practically untrained. That is to say, they have a lot of power, but no idea how to effectively use it so enemies that A-rank mages stomp on are trouble for them.
* ProphecyTwist: Nephrite foretells that the Moon Princess will come to harm at the wedding ceremony. Beryl takes that to mean that the Moon Princess will die, and has Jadeite attack the wedding. Nanoha injures herself further after using a Divine Buster on Jadeite, but survives.
* ProtectedByAChild: [[spoiler:Alicia tries to do this to get Precia to stop torturing Fate. [[MoralEventHorizon Precia attacks Alicia for defying her]], [[BerserkButton which angers Fate to the point that she starts fighting back.]]]]
* PunctuatedForEmphasis:
-->'''Fate''': Leave. Nanoha. Alone.\
'''Nanoha''': Don't call me that! [[IHatePastMe That selfish, irresponsible, cowardly child is not me]]! I'm Nanoha, not Serenity! Na. No. Ha!\
'''Nanoha''': And they will. Not. Hurt. Anyone. Else.
* RedundantRescue: In chapter 14, [[spoiler: Tuxedo Kamen went to support Sailor Mercury, who was in pursuit of a youma and hoping to track it to the Dark Kingdom. He arrived just as she [[AnvilOnHead crushed Zoicite.]]]]
* ReincarnationRomance: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}, as Nanoha's persona [[IHatePastMe does not mesh well]] with Serenity's, which only makes sense considering that the only reason that Nanoha ended up as Serenity's reincarnation was because Queen Serenity [[PointOfDivergence botched the Reincarnation spell]]. As a result, she has nothing in common with Mamoru/Endymion, leaving them unable to re-create their past lives' relationship. [[spoiler:It's not going to happen because Nanoha has decided to [[ScrewDestiny Screw]] [[IncrediblyLamePun Fate]].]]
* RelationshipUpgrade: [[spoiler: Nanoha and Fate become a couple as of Chapter 10.]]
* ReleasingFromThePromise: At the end of the story, [[spoiler:Nanoha releases the Sailor Senshi from her service, acknowledging that they should not be held to oaths sworn by their pre-incarnations]].
* RetGone: In an omake, Chibi-Usa {{Expy}} Picoha tries to prevent Nanoha and Fate from becoming friends and is stopped by Vivio. Because Nanoha doesn't create Crystal Tokyo, she is never born.
* RuleOfSymbolism: [[spoiler: The Ginzuisho, most important of the Royal Moon Family's crown jewels and their greatest weapon, is absorbed by Raising Heart and becomes one more mode for Nanoha to use in service to the TSAB.]]
* ScarsAreForever: Fate still has visible scars on her back from what Precia did to her as a child. [[WordOfGod It's why she refused to wear an open-backed dress to the wedding.]]
* ScreeningTheCall: Fate doesn't want Nanoha to return to active duty until she's fully recovered from her injuries, and thus prevents her from finding out the Senshi's reasons for looking for her or that they are looking for her until shortly before the wedding. [[TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive Beryl's not going to take that chance...]]
* ScrewDestiny:
** In regards to Nanoha/Mamoru vs Nanoha/Fate subplot. WordOfGod says that Nanoha/Mamoru is not set in stone just because of the ReincarnationRomance angle, and the author has noted in proofreading discussion that Mamoru is making [[LovingAShadow a crucial mistake]] in thinking of Nanoha as "the Princess" and not as "Takamachi Nanoha".
---> In ''Sailor Moon'', it is implied that because the Earth Prince and Moon Princess were lovers in their previous lives, they are destined to be lovers again in their current ones. I don't find that plausible. I find the interpretation presented in the Deverry novels by Katherine Kerr to be more likely. In those stories, two people with a strong connection to each other (positive or negative) in one life will be inclined to similar feelings if they meet in another life, but they aren't bound to it. Reincarnated lovers will be inclined to like each other when they meet, making it easier for them to become lovers again, and reincarnated enemies will be inclined to dislike each other, making it easier for them to find a new reason to fight in the current life, but these are not set in stone. Reincarnated enemies can resolve their differences. Reincarnated lovers can end up parting ways. One's previous lives might influence the person they become, but it doesn't define them absolutely. Nanoha is not Princess Serenity. Mamoru is not Prince Endymion.
** [[spoiler:Nanoha also makes this decision in regards to the Moon Kingdom. She isn't interested in reviving it at all and instead only sees it as something of historical interest. Luna is not happy about that at all.]]
* SelfMadeOrphan: Technically, [[spoiler:Fate after she kills her mother but Precia [[KarmicDeath had it coming]] for abusing both of her daughters.]]
* SenselessSacrifice: The death of the original Sailor Venus, in the eyes of Nanoha, was made pointless by Princess Serenity. Not because of anything that Venus did, but because Princess Serenity didn't make any effort to make Venus' sacrifice mean anything.
* SequelHook: An omake in which Minako, now a music student on her school's annual charity concert tour, is forced to transform into Sailor Venus to repel a monster attack - on stage, during a performance and [[spoiler: in front of Michiru Kaioh.]]
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Chibi-Moon tries to do this in the omake of Chapter Ten, since Nanoha and Fate getting together would mean her and the future Moon Kingdom vanishing forever. Vivio is under the impression that she's doing the same thing when she stops Chibi-Moon.
* ShoutOut: The disguise pen-fake Nanoha gambit in chapter 12 ends on one of these. The chapter is even called Operation Bowser.
-->"I'm sorry," Sailor Jupiter said, "[[Franchise/SuperMarioBros But the princess is in another castle.]]"
* ShutUpKiss: [[spoiler:Nanoha to Fate, immediately before preparing to finish off Metallia, which both expect to cost her her life]]. It was to distract her long enough to trap her in a bind.
* SillyReasonForWar: The TSAB's opinion of the events that destroyed the Moon Kingdom; a love triangle. The fact Beryl was being controlled by Metallia is conveniently ignored.
* SocialServicesDoesNotExist:
** Averted. An officer tells [[spoiler:Precia]] that [[spoiler:Alicia]] is running afoul of the truancy laws.
** Later on, [[spoiler:Ami/Mercury]] wonders what will happen to her if the authorities find out about her situation while [[spoiler:her mother is still in a coma. Saeko recovers before anything comes of this.]]
* SpeakNowOrForeverHoldYourPeace: Miyuki decides to treat Jadeite's attack on her brother's wedding as one of these after the fact (See BondOneLiner).
* [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Spell My Name Without An S]]: Zoisite is spelled "Zoicite" throughout.
* StrawCharacter: ''Luna.'' She has not only been hit hard with the {{Flanderization}} stick, (see {{Flanderization}} and DiscoDan for more information) but her main role in this story seems to help make the main cast of ''Sailor Moon'' look bad while the main cast of ''Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha'' look good. Everyone getting on the same page after the first arc mitigates this (the ''Sailor Moon'' Cast looking bad, not Luna being made of straw).
* SuperMode: [[spoiler:Lunar Excellion Nanoha is the closest powerup to Nanoha becoming a Sailor Senshi; her barrier jacket is altered to a shorter skirt, is more skin tight, and her hair turns plantinum blonde.]]
* SwitchingPOV: The narration switches between focusing on the ''Nanoha'' cast and the ''Sailor Moon'' cast, which determines which characters are referred to by name or how situations are described. For example, Fate finds "the cat" to be a nuisance who can potentially interrupt Nanoha's recovery, while Luna thinks that "the Dark Senshi" has brainwashed the princess and is threatening the fate of the world. After the two sides start working together, this effect lessens, though the POV continues to switch among the various characters (including the villains).
* TaughtByExperience: The Senshi have no formal training and instead have a year of irregular life-or-death fights. When they have a mock battle with TSAB agents (C rank) it is six agents against five senshi. The agents are better trained and better coordinated with the senshi's only advantages being raw power and fighting instinct. The Senshi win. The author notes go further and state that if that were a real battle, the agents would be ''dead'' and the senshi would only be roughed up and inconvienced by bindings.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: The Senshi, without Usagi, do not get along as well as in canon.
* TemptingFate: "At least we aren't likely to have any trouble show up at a wedding." [[WeddingSmashers Yeah, sure]].
* ThatOnePlayer: Nanoha conquers the Sailor V game. The only thing she found difficult about it was that the console was designed for right-handed players.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Fate's reaction when [[spoiler: Precia attacked Alicia simply for pulling a YouShallNotPass to protect Fate. As soon as Precia did that, she found a {{BFS}} LaserBlade through her torso.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: With the Senshi being taught by [[BadassTeacher Nanoha]] this would eventually result. Take [[spoiler:Mercury]] for example, she went from being the physically weakest Senshi [[spoiler:to [[CurbStompBattle curb stomping and killing Zoicite]] by HERSELF.]]
* TrainingFromHell: The Senshi believe Nanoha's training is like this with Ami straight up saying that "The Princess is a monster". They accept it since it is clear that she intends to make them into the elite soldiers they were in a past life. Then Nanoha gets better...
* TranquilFury: Nanoha is not pleased with [[spoiler:her sister getting kidnapped.]]
-->''As Vita looked up to Nanoha's eyes, she couldn't help the cold pit forming in her stomach. The same cold she had felt when she had seen those eyes leveled at her from a young girl, surrounded by fire. She remembered what she had called the girl back then...''
* TransformationTrinket: Nanoha gets one from the Sailor V arcade game. [[spoiler: Fate promptly ships it off to the TSAB to be studied when she realized Luna sent it to Nanoha.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Lots of Nanoha's friends have this for her but special mention goes to Vita. Fate theorizes two possible outcomes for when the TSAB hears about the situation on Earth: 1.) Hayate is granted premission to take her knights to Earth and 2.) Hayate is not granted premission and Vita takes time off for a vacation on Earth.
* TheUnmasquedWorld:
** [[spoiler: The truth of the wedding attack is public as there are too many witnesses and photos of the Senshi, and Nanoha's family are now being hounded by lots of interested people.]]
** In one omake, the TSAB sends ''recruitment brochures'' to Midori-ya. Think about that.
* UnskilledButStrong:
** The Sailor Senshi, partly due to not operating under the same rules of engagement as the Bureau and partly due to a lack of formal training are currently roughly equivalent to A rank, but have the potential to fight at AAA rank level.
** Goes to OhCrap levels when Shamal gets a scan of Hotaru's Linker Core and realizes that she's ''SSS-Rank''. [[ApocalypseMaiden Given who she is]], this is not surprising.
* VestigialEmpire: Nanoha's main justification for why she won't revive the Moon Kingdom: by now hardly anyone even ''remembers'' the Moon Kingdom outside the reincarnated senshi, and it's only mentioned in a few papers.
* VillainBall:
** If Beryl wasn't so determined to kill Nanoha, it's ''highly'' likely that Nanoha and Fate would still be suspicious of the Sailor Senshi. To make this more damning, she already had an overwhelming advantage at that point: she would have simply won by attrition and lack of morale from the senshi, Nanoha would have left the planet after that wedding, and the TSAB would have never known about this war until she already won, and that is '''if''' they discovered the Dark Kingdom [[RememberedTooLate long after it was too late to stop her]]! [[NiceJobFixingItVillain Way to go, Beryl...]] [[spoiler:She [[VillainousBSOD regrets this bitterly]] when Miyuki points both this and the fact that she had no interest in Endymion at all out to her.]]
** [[spoiler:Precia's method of drawing energy at a hospital is too blatant and serves to draw the attention of the TSAB quickly, resulting in Alicia ending up in Bureau custody]].
* WeakButSkilled: Sailor Mercury ends up becoming this after [[TookALevelInBadass leveling up]], [[spoiler: even killing Zoicite single-handedly through clever application of ice magic]]
* WeddingSmashers: Jadeite tries to attack Nanoha at her brother's wedding. Unfortunately for him, every guest present was expecting something like that.
* WhatTheHellHero: Mercury and Venus call out Mars and Jupiter for their attacks on Fate, noting that, among other things, it makes it harder for Nanoha to trust them.
* WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue: The ending shows where the cast ended up in the end.
** Minako [[spoiler:auditions and is accepted into a musical academy, where she begins studying to become a singer]].
** Ami [[spoiler:goes to Mid-Childa to study magic and pays for her tuition with a tour of duty in the TSAB in a non-combat role]].
** Makoto [[spoiler:gets a summer job at the Midori-ya to learn how to become a baker and eventually moves to Uminari to continue the job full-time]].
** Rei [[spoiler:returns to her life as a shrine maiden]].
** Mamoru [[spoiler:sulks about losing Nanoha's heart for a while before eventually resuming his relationship with Rei]].
** Hotaru [[spoiler:is adopted by the Takamachis, and both Japanese hospitals and the TSAB begin trying to recruit her, which could lead to a nasty fight over who gets to keep her in the end]].
** Artemis [[spoiler:accepts Nanoha's dissolution of the Moon Kingdom and retires to the life of a common house pet]].
** Luna [[spoiler:continues to scheme on how to get Nanoha to claim her rightful place as Queen Serenity]].
** Alicia [[spoiler:is adopted by the Harlaowns, and is rather befuddled when Fate adopts a child before she herself is out of grade school]].
** Yuuno [[spoiler:spends the next several years documenting everything he has learned about the Moon Kingdom]].
** Nanoha, Fate, Arf, Hayate, and the Wolkenritter return to their lives at the TSAB.
* WildCard: [[spoiler:[[EvilMatriarch Precia]] and [[MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter Alicia Testarossa]]. There is a MeleeATrois between Sailor Mars, [[EvilVersusEvil Precia Testarossa, and Zoicite]].]]
* WorfBarrage: [[spoiler: Not only does Metallia NoSell the combination of Starlight Breaker, Zamber Plasma, and Ragnarok, but she also ''eats'' it and became even ''stronger''.]]
* {{Workaholic}}: Nanoha is quite rightly described as such, to the point that she has to be pretty much ordered to take a vacation.
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:Precia hurts ''her own daughter Alicia'', no less. She's really far gone by that point]].
* WrongGenreSavvy:
** Luna takes one look at Fate's barrier jacket -- black color scheme, metal gauntlets, ominous-looking cape, etc etc -- and immediately decides that Fate is evil. This would be [[JustifiedTrope True]] in ''Anime/SailorMoon'' but it's [[DarkIsNotEvil False]] in ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha''.
** After [[BadassNormal Miyuki's]] attempt to attack [[BigBad Queen Beryl]] after Nephrite captured her was finally stopped, Beryl thought Nephrite had intended for that to happen. Then again, she is a BadBoss.
* WrongNameOutburst: Mamoru addresses Nanoha as Serenity. Given that Nanoha was talking about [[IHatePastMe how much she disapproved of the decisions she made in her previous life]] at the time, it didn't go over well.
* {{Yandere}}: Raising Heart, in one of the omakes, destroys the TransformationTrinket Nanoha gets from the arcade machine.
-->"I Am Your Device, Master. You Do Not Need Another."
* YoureNotMyMother:
** Nanoha to Queen Serenity because of the reincarnation thing.
** [[spoiler:Fate to Precia because the latter attacked Alicia in a fit of rage]].
* YouCantThwartStageOne:
** Averted. [[spoiler: The Mistress Nine parasite is identified and removed before it gets entrenched deep enough in Hotaru's soul to actively fight back, Germatoid is killed attempting to stop Shamal from doing this and his action leads to the police investigating the school, which leads to his assistant's defeat at the hands of Makoto when she tries to stop the police. Thus, the Death Busters' operations are dismantled before they're even equipped to be a threat. Even Pharaoh 90 is dealt with; Fate informs Chrono of its location, and he sends a fleet to blast it into dust.]]
** Played straight with [[spoiler: Metallia's revival because Beryl acquires the Jewel Seeds.]]
* YouShallNotPass: Jupiter attempted one of these during the fall of the Moon Kingdom. She died in the attempt (messily), but between herself and Mercury they bought Queen Serenity enough time to stop Metallia.
* YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle: The heroes [[spoiler:pull this on Nephrite. Jupiter even uses those exact words. Unfortunately, he still manages to take Miyuki hostage.]]
