->''Forty years ago – before there were the Brothers Grimm – there were the brothers Cahill; lab rats created in hopes of duplicating the Army's Captain America Program. Their creators could never have imagined that these brothers would grow up to become IMF Agent William Brandt, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Clint Barton, Outcome Operative Aaron Cross, NYPD Detective Jason Walsh and SWAT Officer Brian Gamble. God help the world.''

So there is a popular fandom trope that Creator/JeremyRenner's characters are, due to their similarity of type, all one person - usually [[ComicBook/{{Hawkeye}} Clint Barton]]. The Unusual Avengers Legacy Protocol (and its side story, Fairy Tales) works off of a different idea: they're not the same guy, they're all ''clones'' of the same guy.

Okay, that's only mildly less confusing. It's generally easier just to read [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/498313/chapters/873638/ UALP]] or [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/527064/chapters/933138/ Fairy Tales]] themselves.

!!This work has examples of:

* AlternateUniverseFic: ''And how.''
* AnnoyingArrows: Clint all over.
* AnotherSideAnotherStory: Fairy Tales fills in some blanks left by the main work, focusing on one particular couple.
* AsLongAsItSoundsForeign: UALP has shades of this in places; much of the cast grew up speaking Russian, and one character is a native German speaker. Cue Google Translator and a lot of crossed fingers. At least the effort is made.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: The [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/578893/ Advent calendar]] shows us a sneak peek at this particular future for most of UALP's couples.]]
* BadassFamily: UALP ''runs'' on this trope.
* BadassLongcoat: In universe, [[spoiler: Hansel Kuhn actually steals Nick Fury's leather coat from the back of his office chair and directly from under his nose. He then proceeds to wear it everywhere, quietly flaunting how badass he is.]]
* BashBrothers: Any of the Grimm boys qualify, although Kenny Grimm [[spoiler: Bourne Legacy's Aaron Cross]] and Clint Grimm [[spoiler: The Avengers' Clint Barton]] are the best example. They have been best friends since Clint was born and there is very little in RealLife that can tear that bond apart.
** [[spoiler: Even after Aaron runs away from the family in the UALP, Clint still does everything he can to try and hunt him down and bring him home.]]
* BattleCouple: Most notably, Hansel Kuhn & Maria Hill, with more than honorable mentions going to the pairing of Will & Marina and Brian & Natasha.
* BavarianFireDrill: Aaron pulls this off in his source material ("You belong here") but Hansel also does it at least twice - [[spoiler: once when he walks around base, pretending to be his oldest son, and again several months later as he explores and eventually leaves an Austrian hospital, neatly slipping SHIELD's leash.]]
* BenevolentBoss: Will Grimm [[spoiler: MI:4's Will Brandt]] is this; partially subverted by the fact that half of his underlings (with the notable exceptions of his partner and his younger brothers) are terrified of him.
* BigBrotherInstinct: All of the Brothers Grimm show this with regards to each other and Marina; they are a very tight knit family and [[spoiler: they have gotten into more than a few fights and broken more than a few people in defense of their loved ones]].
* CanonImmigrant: [[spoiler: SGT Doyle appears in Fairy Tales, but not in UALP. WordOfGod is that he will eventually appear in the original work.]]
* CastFullOfPrettyBoys: Seriously? Six Jeremy Renners, people. That is all.
* ChristmasEpisode: The Advent calendar.
* CircusBrat: [[spoiler: After running away from the Army, the Brothers Grimm joined Carter's Circus. As Clint Grimm was only two at this point, he probably embodies this trope best.]]
* ClonesArePeopleToo: As stated above, all main characters that are taken from a Jeremy Renner role in this story are clones of one genetic donor, [[spoiler: Hansel Kuhn.]]
* ColonelBadass: Will Grimm [[spoiler: MI:4's William Brandt]] is a full bird Colonel for the United States Army. His partner and longtime XO, Marina Petrovka, is a Lt. Colonel. Both of them will quite happily kick your ass for you, if you give them a reason to.
** At one point in UALP, shortly after [[spoiler: Hansel impersonates him, Will rips a rangemaster a new one for being an idiot and allowing unauthorized personnel onto the range without first checking proper ID.]]
** It should also be noted that anyone who has ever served in a Unit with Will Grimm loves him and would follow him to hell if he asked it of them.
* CordonBleughChef: There is a running gag through the story based on [[spoiler: The Unusual's Jason Walsh]] that Jason Grimm is utterly forbidden from ''any'' kitchen whatsoever. If it's his turn to cook, find a way to do it for him. [[spoiler: fruit loops in waffles and pretzels in omelettes.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Most of the main cast has shades of this, but Clint, Hansel, Brian, Maria Hill and [[spoiler: Doyle]] are the biggest offenders.
* DesignerBabies: Seriously, all five of the Brothers Grimm were designed to fulfill a specific role within an Army Spec Ops squad.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: Hansel pulls this off to great effect during the operation to [[spoiler: rescue Gretel from the German government]]. It's implied that some poor bastard was MuggedForDisguise, but never explicitly stated.
** Earlier in the same continuity (first in FT, then in UALP) Hansel also [[spoiler: broke out of his room and walked around base, impersonating his son, COL William Grimm (MI:4's Will Brandt).]]
* DudeShesLikeInAComa: In universe [[spoiler: Hansel is woken from his 200 year cursed sleep when Maria Hill kisses him, after he's been rescued from HYDRA. One can only assume Gretel will be woken in a similar fashion (though, probably not by Maria. Sorry, yuri fans.)]]
* ElitesAreMoreGlamorous: The Brothers Grimm and Marina are a Spec Ops squad for the US Army.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: From that first kiss, it takes Hansel and Maria approximately 8 years just to kiss again, [[spoiler: at least a kiss that ''both'' of them remember.]]
* EnemyWithin: Brian's alternate personality is actually Barney Grimm, the man he was when he [[spoiler: left Clint to die in the center of the Big Top of the circus where they lived.]] This personality can occasionally rear its ugly head, but Brian has him mostly under his control. It is assumed that this personality is a large part of why Brian Grimm is so batshit crazy.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: Hansel & Gretel, and as the Avengers will eventually be involved, Steve Rogers qualifies too. Hansel adjusts rather well, as one of his primary strengths is adaptability. It remains to be seen how Gretel will react to the modern world.
* FlirtingUnderFire: The BattleCouple Natasha & Brian are notorious for this. Like literally, WordOfGod indicates [[spoiler: that Brian finally asks Natasha out after she and his brother, Clint, rescue him after he's been captured by the Hungarians as a spy.]]
* ForeignLanguageTirade: Marina swears and yells in Russian when she's really pissed, especially when yelling at the Brothers Grimm. Hansel also loses his hold on the English language when stressed or in the grip of strong emotion.
* FriendlySniper: Clint Grimm is the embodiment of this trope, for the simple reason that it doesn't matter who meets him in universe, he is very hard to resist. He is always laughing and having a good time, in addition to being one of the nicest and well-adjusted male characters in the whole universe.
* FunetikAksent: Seriously, after you've read Hansel speaking, you'll understand what I mean.
* GoodBadGirl: It is ''very'' heavily implied that the Merry Murderesses were sent on more than a few Raven Protocol assignments for the Red Room. [[spoiler: Raven Protocols are the assignments, wherein the spy seduces the mark to achieve the objective. That objective can be assassination, information or the chance to flip them from ''mark'' to ''asset''.]]
* HappilyMarried: Will and Marina. Admittedly, they never actually marry but they are extremely committed to one another. [[spoiler: Eventually, Will asks her to be his partner for the rest of their lives and gives her a ring. Later, most of the main couples get this as well.]]
* HeroicComedicSociopath: Brian practically squeals with glee as he tortures [[spoiler: the Winter Soldier after the Winter Soldier shoots Marina so he could save her life]].
* HeroicLineage: Technically the Brothers Grimm, [[spoiler: as all five boys are cloned from Hansel Kuhn's DNA. Hansel Kuhn is a badass witch hunter from the 18th Century, who fell asleep for 200 years because of a witch's curse. Later, a more traditional example of HeroicLineage takes place with the Grimms' biological children.]]
* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty: [[spoiler: WordOfGod indicates that Hansel's so-called immortality is inherited by his sons.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Runs in the family; practically all of [[spoiler: Hansel]]'s descendants have uncanny accuracy with their chosen weaponry.
* IronLady: Assistant Director Maria Hill. Her ''underlings'' call her the Left Hand of God.
* LadyOfWar: Much of the female cast qualifies; Marina, Maria and Natasha are standouts.
* LEGOGenetics: Basically what is done to Kenneth Grimm to transform him into [[spoiler: Bourne Legacy's Aaron Cross]].
* MajorlyAwesome: This is actually Clint Grimm, [[spoiler: The Avengers' Clint Barton]]. He starts out as a captain but is later promoted to Major after [[spoiler: a solo assassination assignment for the Army that nearly killed him.]]
* MegaCrossover: Centering on Renner's roles, with 9 different multimedia fandoms and counting.
* MilitaryBrat: In universe, [[spoiler: the Brothers Grimm are this, seeing as they were first built by the Army, then brought up in an underground base with the intention of making them into the perfect soldiers.]]
** [[spoiler: The best part is that, having joined the Army anyway once they were old enough, the children of the Brothers Grimm embody this trope as well.]]
* MrFanservice: With six [[spoiler: (or more?)]] slightly different facsimiles of Jeremy Renner running around, this one's pretty obvious.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Brothers Grimm/''Brat'ya Mrachhny'', the Merry Murderesses. And let's not forget Maria Hill's moniker of the Left Hand of God.
* PairTheSpares: ''Everyone'' has a love interest. ''Everyone.''
* PapaWolf: Very much with [[spoiler: Hansel, made doubly so by the fact that his codename is The Wolf!]]
* PlayfulHacker: Jason Grimm is an highly skilled hacker and computer specialist who occasionally hacks both the Kremlin and the Pentagon, just to see how fast it would take him to do it. [[spoiler: He learned these skills due to being trained by the Army for it since the time he was 4 years old.]]
* SiblingTeam: The Brothers Grimm, or as they're known in the Army the ''Brat'ya Mrachnyy'', are a Special Operations team with the US Army.
* SquadNickname: The Brothers Grimm is the name for SHIELD's tactical unit, of which the Grimm brothers are the sole members. The ''Brat'ya Mrachnyy'' is the name for the Army's Top Secret Spec Ops squad, of which the Grimm brothers are the sole members.
* TeamMom: Marina all over, [[spoiler: especially considering the fact that Fury assigned her to be the handler for the Brothers Grimm even after they went to work for SHIELD, simply because there was no one better suited to keeping track of her boys without undue mental stress.]]
* TheAgeless: Anyone enhanced by the Red Room (Marina Petrovka, Natasha Romanov, the remaining two Merry Murderesses) and Hansel Kuhn are implied to be these. [[spoiler: It is rumored that the Brothers Grimm are also among TheAgeless.]]
* ThePrankster: Clint Grimm and Aaron Grimm, [[spoiler: along with the Winter Soldier]] are notorious for shooting SHIELD junior agents with Nerf arrows and other small projectiles. Also, Clint and Brian once [[spoiler: tortured a young junior agent for a week after he called their father a Nazi.]]
