[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Sephiroth]] is one of the most popular Final Fantasy villains of all time. He's [[TheAce an elite soldier,]] [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds has a tragic story,]] and he's very, very pretty. But what was his life like before the game began? Before he met Cloud and Zack? The aptly named Sephirothslave sets out to tell us.

Between the ages of 14 and 18 (2002-2006), Sephirothslave wrote her two stories Shinra High and Shinra SOLDIER, boasting a total of [[DoorStopper 169 chapters (170 including the epilogue)]] of meandering plot lines. What starts off seeming as a typical HighSchoolAU turns out to be her attempt to write the history before the story began.

[[SelfInsert Julia]] [[GratuitousJapanese Nakahamou]], a blonde and busty martial arts prodigy, is a recent transfer student to Shinra High. On her first day, she encounters most of the crew of Final Fantasy VII, but more importantly, she encounters Sephiroth and [[LoveAtFirstSight falls instantly in love with him.]] Unfortunately for her, Sephiroth ends up in a relationship with [[RomanticFalseLead Laura.]] On top of this, Julia catches the attention of the science teacher [[MadScientist Hojo]] who wants her as part of his new project to build a breed of [[AppliedPhlebotinum Mako-enhanced]] [[SuperSoldier Super Soldiers.]] Julia and Sephiroth must sort out their feelings for each other while surviving Hojo's deadly experiments.

Shinra High doesn't so much end as [[DividedForPublication roll directly into its sequel]], Shinra SOLDIER. Julia, Sephiroth, and the others have survived Hojo's training and are now rushed into military training to ideally become the new SOLDIER class heroes that Midgar desperately needs. Sephiroth and Julia exceed expectations, quickly ousting General Heidegger and becoming the new [[AsskickingLeadsToLeadership General]] and [[NumberTwo Commander]] of the Shinra armies. They then lead Shinra to its rise to power, [[InvincibleHero effortlessly crushing all opposition]] [[CombatPragmatist in the most ruthless ways possible.]]

However, [[BigBad Hojo]] still has plans for our couple. He has begun injecting Sephiroth with [[PsychoSerum JenovaCells]], allowing [[EldritchAbomination Jenova]] to possess Sephiroth's body and try to kill Julia. Ultimately, [[DoomedByCanon Hojo succeeds in poisoning and murdering Julia]], ending the story right as Sephiroth heads for Nibelheim, and the beginning of the actual game's plot.

The fiction is well known for several reasons. In addition to its length, convoluted plot and the blatant perfectionist qualities of Julia, it is a mouthpiece for the [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation Jenova Possession Theory]], which claims that Sephiroth was not the true villain of the series, but rather an innocent victim, being controlled and or commanded by [[EldritchAbomination Jenova]]. In addition to this, [[DaydreamBeliever Sephirothslave claims that the character of Sephiroth was inspired by her archangel husband, who supposedly looks like him and shares his name]]. Finally, it is famous for butchering nearly every character in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'', and getting nearly every aspect of the story wrong.

Sephirothslave returned to the series to attempt to rewrite it, but gave up after only making superficial changes to the first nine chapters. A sequel to ''Shinra SOLDIER'', ''Silent Melody'', was also [[DeadFic abandoned]] after four chapters.

!!The series consists of:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:A-F]]

* AbridgedSeries: ''Shinra SOLDIER'' has one [[http://lian-hua.livejournal.com/58401.html here.]]
* AbortedArc:
** We are introduced to two of Hojo's assistants, one of whom has feelings for him. The fic never addresses this again, and [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome we never see them again.]]
** Heidegger [[UnfriendlyFire shoots Julia]] during the battle with Fort Condor. The fic never expands on this.
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Yuffie gave Sephiroth an enchanted dagger that could cut through anything.
* AbusiveParents: Julia's parents have forced her into prostitution when she was younger and locked her up in a mental institution for three years. Her father beats and rapes her, and ultimately tries to kill her. Hojo has been physically and mentally abusing Sephiroth since he was born.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The Turks get one chapter dedicated entirely to themselves.
* AdultsAreUseless: The staff of Shinra High doesn't agree with Hojo's horrific treatment of the students, but doesn't do anything to stop him or protect the kids.
* AgeInappropriateDress: A freshman in high school, Julia wears a halter-top, black leather miniskirt, knee-high black leather boots and spiked bracelets. Everybody else in the story wears normal clothes, except Scarlet.
* AfraidOfNeedles: Julia. Her fear comes and goes.
* AfterActionPatchUp: Julia and Sephiroth often end up in Midgar City hospital, mostly as a result of Hojo's abuses. Usually, the recovery is not glossed over, and the character continue to take part in conversations and encounters while hospitalized.
* AfterSchoolCleaningDuty: Hojo gives his whole class the task of cleaning out his specimen cages as punishment for laughing at him.
* TheAlcoholic: Reno is portrayed as such.
* AllGuysWantCheerleaders: Averted. Both Laura and Aerith are looked down on for being cheerleaders by all male (and female) lead characters, with Yuffie distrusting Laura just for being a cheerleader, and Rude explicitly not wanting to watch a play because Aerith is in it.
* AllTakeAndNoGive: Sephiroth and Yuffie's relationship can be described as such, with Sephiroth being the taker. Yuffie worries about him, does what she can to make sure he's happy, gives him expensive gifts (an enchanted dagger that can cut through anything) and extends her financial and moral support to Julia as well (initially for Sephiroth's sake). Sephiroth takes Yuffie more or less for granted, an attitude that Julia would later emulate, and the relationship immediately grows distant the moment Yuffie leaves Midgar and cannot be of any use to them anymore.
* AltarTheSpeed: Julia and Sephiroth decide to get married two weeks sooner than they had planned after they realize Julia has gotten [[LawOfInverseFertility pregnant]].
* AlwaysSecondBest: Julia, to Sephiroth. She doesn't mind - on the contrary, her idea of showing love implies a large degree of almost complete submission in everything.
* {{Animesque}}: Sephirothslave attempts to portray the school as a wacky, violence-filled warzone with poisonous cafeteria food, like something out of ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''. It fails to translate into prose well.
* AnIcePerson: Julia's limit break, Heaven's Judgment, summons ice daggers that get thrown at her opponent. Fittingly, as her personality shows her to be a cold and distant person.
* ArchnemesisDad: Hojo is this for Sephiroth. Julia's father also qualifies, until Sephiroth takes Julia away from him.
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Hojo ends up pumping ten 500 ml (5 liters/1.32 gallons) mako injections into his body one night. The average normal adult has roughly 5 liters (1.3 gallons) of blood in his body, meaning that he basically replaced almost all his blood with mako.
* ArtisticLicenseMilitary:
** Promotions are done by straight combat with no need to go through Officer school.
** Sephiroth and Julia completely ignore the chain of command, and forge orders from the general with no comeuppance.
** Boot camp is treated like it's high school, only with military themed classes.
* AsLongAsItSoundsForeign: The fic is packed with names such as Korokou and Nakahamou which appear Japanese, but have no meaning in the language.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Raw, one-on-one physical combat skill is the sole quality required to become the general of the entire Shinra army, by beating the previous one in the Challenges. Sephiroth defeats Heidegger to become the general.
* AttentionWhore: Since Julia is an AuthorAvatar and Sephirothslave has admitted numerous times that she loves being in the spotlight, her main character often comes off as this. Julia Nakahamou claims to abhor attention, but constantly agrees to TV interviews even years after her biggest military achievement and invites the ''entire Shinra army'' to her lavish and expensive wedding.
* AudienceSurrogate: By turns, Hojo, Zack and Laura. There are instances in which they channel the readers' reaction to Sephiroth and Julia's despicable behavior.
* AuthorAvatar: Sephirothslave's real name is Julia. Julia's description and artwork makes it clear she is an idealized version of its creator, with more money, power, and bigger breasts. The character shares the author's hobbies such as martial arts and music, her interest in the occult, her aspirations (being together with Sephiroth, obtaining power, fame and recognition), even the name of her weapons, which Sephirothslave claims to own in real life. Julia's parents and friends also share the names of their real life counterparts. Julia also automatically hates anybody Sephirothslave hates even before they do anything. (Cloud is asleep when she first meets him and hits him out of the blue in the eye with a marble, and her first encounter with Aerith is just Julia feeling smug that Aerith got hit by an ink balloon).
* AxCrazy: Hojo fits this trope perfectly.
* BadBoss:
** President Shinra allows Hojo to torture Sephiroth, Julia and the others because he wants them for his army. When Hojo murders two soldiers, a Turk and Sephiroth and Julia's baby, the only course of action taken by the President is to demote Hojo and spend two weeks without arresting the soldiers who obeyed the crazy scientist. His justification? He needs Hojo for the mako therapy. Worth noting is that this is an unintentional example on the author's part, as the main characters fail to see just how little President Shinra cares about them and consider him a benevolent, if somewhat dim-witted man.
** Hojo's technicians are terrified of him, and are implied to be constantly abused.
** Sephiroth and Julia are highly incompetent managers who are constantly disgusted by their subordinates and consistently display a hostile and haughty attitude towards them. In the end, this contributes to the death of their son Orion and friend Korokou, as Hojo can easily find twenty members of SOLDIER to act as a firing squad.
* TheBadGuyWins: Hojo kills Sephiroth's wife and son, effectively breaking his spirit, and continues undisturbed to inject him with more Jenova cells.
* BagOfHolding: Julia, Sephiroth and Hojo all have one. Hojo can make a massive battleaxe appear from his!
* BattleCouple: Julia and Sephiroth.
* BeigeProse: A staple of the author's writing style.
* BerserkButton: So many people.
** Julia: Any threat or insult to Sephiroth, or the implication that she's gay.
** Sephiroth: Any threat or insult to Julia.
** Hojo: Disrespect him in any way and he will torture the entire class.
* BettyAndVeronica: Julia is Veronica to Laura's Betty. Later in the fic, their roles [[BettyAndVeronicaSwitch reverse.]]
* {{BFS}}: The Buster Sword is now standard issue for all Shinra grunts.
* BigBad: Hojo. [[TheBadGuyWins He wins.]]
* BigFancyHouse: In the beginning of the story, Hojo lives together with Sephiroth in a mansion. Following an incident with her father, Julia moves in with them, implicitly without Hojo's consent. When Julia and Sephiroth get married later, they receive a large mansion as present from Shinra, complete with expansive grounds and a full staff.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: Let's begin with Julia, a sadistic, petty and arrogant psycho stemming from a violent, murderous, incestuous father and a highly emotionally unstable mother. Julia's husband Sephiroth is a cold-blooded, amoral and sadistic killer. Julia's father-in-law is the insane professor Hojo, whose main hobbies involve torturing and experimenting on teenagers and chopping people up with his battleaxe. The only seemingly normal member of the family is Tseng, Julia's foster brother, although even he begins displaying sociopathic tendencies toward the end of the story.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[PsychoExGirlfriend Laura Summers]] is portrayed as a selfish, spoiled and incredibly spiteful person who [[DieForOurShip committed suicide]] seemingly for no other reason than to get back at Sephiroth, [[PlotHole whom she had dumped in the first place]].
* BlackAndGrayMorality: The main characters are two self-centered young people who seem to hate everything but each other and who end up committing horrible crimes without ever being painted as in the wrong.
* BrokenBird: Yuffie has her country invaded and witnesses her mother being killed in a gruesome manner by her former best friends. The author tries to invoke this with Julia, but she is so unlikeable and arrogant that she comes off more as a SmugSnake.
* TheBully: Julia's only stated hobby is trashing preps. On her first day of school, she sees Cloud Strife asleep in class, takes a rubber band and fires a marble at his ''eye''. Reno splashed Aerith from head to toe with ink and sneakily cut off so much of Cloud's hair that he was left with a bald spot.
* BullyingADragon:
** Zack, fully aware that Sephiroth can and will beat him up for any affront, loves to antagonize him anyway.
** The entire school likes to "stampede" Hojo on the way out of the building, despite the fact that he will sometimes retaliate by unleashing deadly monsters on them as part of a test.
** When Hojo takes Sephiroth's infant son hostage with the intention of murdering him, Sephiroth keeps insulting Hojo all throughout the negotiations, which leads to Hojo ordering his soldiers to kill the baby.
* ButtMonkey: Cloud, Aerith and occasionally Reno. Strangely enough, [[BigBad Hojo]] gets this treatment at times. It makes it harder to take him seriously as a legitimate threat.
* CallingYourAttacks: Julia calls out her Limit Break and the spells that she casts.
* CartwrightCurse: Laura and Julia, the two women Sephiroth becomes involved with, both die by the end of the story. Laura commits suicide in ''Shinra High'' and Julia is killed by Hojo at the end of ''Shinra SOLDIER''.
* CastFromHitPoints: Even though there's no mechanics for it, Julia will fuel any spell used to protect or heal Sephiroth with her life force instead of mana, due to ThePowerOfLove. This appears to accomplish nothing except to cause Julia to faint.
* CharacterCatchphrase: Hojo uses the words ''specimen'' and ''insubordinate'' ad nauseam.
* CheerfulChild: [[ParentalSubstitute Tseng]] claims Julia was this before being taken back by her biological family.
* {{Chickification}}: In addition to Tifa becoming much weaker, Julia herself manages to go through this, switching from a FauxActionGirl to a full fledge DamselInDistress after the Wutai arc.
* ChildByRape: After Sephiroth is forced by Jenova to rape Julia, she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby boy, Orion.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Julia and later Laura. Julia is jealous of Laura's relationship with Sephiroth, whom she is infatuated with, while Laura becomes briefly jealous of Julia when she sees Sephiroth smiling and laughing with her. Laura also gets upset that Sephiroth isn't paying attention to her for a few mere hours, while he's concerned that his friend (Julia) might be dying.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Sephiroth, [[ExaltedTorturer Julia]], Hojo and Zack all indulge in this at various points in the story.
* ColorMotif:
** The color silver appears numerous times in both stories: it's the color of the gym outfits from the special training course, the color of the tablecloths at Homecoming, of one of Julia's dresses and the cloth around her wedding bouquet.
** Even more prominent is the color black. Julia rarely wears any other color.
** Aerith is associated with pink, and even her cheerleading uniform has this color.
* CombatPragmatist: Julia is perfectly willing to go for [[EyeScream eye-gouges,]] [[KillItWithFire fire-enhanced]] [[GroinAttack Groin Shots]], hair pulling, anything to win. Worth noting that most of these attacks were in an exhibition match, and are generally considered forbidden even in “anything goes” level fights.
* ConflictBall: Laura is defined by this quality. She is introduced as a kind girl with a loving family so Sephiroth could fall for her, causing Julia to be unable to confess her feelings for him. The moment this is established, Laura is redefined as a selfish, shallow bitch who only wants Sephiroth because he does her work for her, so that Sephiroth can be with "the wrong girl." This leads to her breaking up with Sephiroth because he won't sleep with her. Once Sephiroth is back with Julia, she [[SpurnedIntoSuicide commits suicide, declaring it's because she doesn't want to live without Sephiroth]], even though she's the one who ended their relationship.
* [[ContrivedStupidityTropes Contrived Stupidity]]: This is the only way the author knows how to move her plot forward.
* ConspicuousConsumption: Sephiroth and Julia's wedding. They had a ''thousand'' guests and rented planes to get everyone there.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: President Shinra is perfectly willing to allow Hojo to do ''anything'' to Sephiroth and Julia as long as Shinra has to gain from it. He goes to such an extent that he punishes Hojo with a simple '''demotion''' for staging a mutiny and murdering a Turk, a First Class SOLDIER and Julia and Sephiroth's infant son.
* CrapsackWorld: In this story, President Shinra rules Midgar like a dictatorship and his employees are allowed to mistreat and even kill their children, the school system pits teenagers against one another in bloody matches, Hojo has free reign to run inhumane experiments on whoever he pleases, there is no hope and nothing to fight for.
* CreatorsCultureCarryover: Detention and federal holidays are mentioned, despite this not being an AU story.
* CruelCheerleader:
** Although initially portrayed as a sweetheart, Laura Summers later proves to be a manipulative, spiteful, selfish and shallow girl. Yuffie realized there is something wrong with her when she found out Laura was a "Varsity cheerleader".
** Averted with Aerith, who is not written as being evil or mean, despite being a cheerleader. However, everybody still treats her as if she is.
* CustomUniform: Julia has a custom-made bodysuit in [[HellBentForLeather black leather]], with black leather gloves and boots. She also has a leather trenchcoat for cold weather.
* DarkerAndEdgier: ''Shinra SOLDIER'' is this compared to ''Shinra High''. Both stories are considerably darker than the original game.
* DarkSecret: Julia's background. Her father forced her to become a prostitute.
* DeathIsCheap: {{Zigzagged}}. Sometimes death is cleaned up by a simple Phoenix Down, while other times, it's permanent. It makes it very hard to tell how we are supposed to react to a death.
* DeathOfAChild: Happens in Chapter 88 of Shinra SOLDIER. Julia and Sephiroth's infant son is violently killed onscreen by a group of soldiers under Hojo's command. It is implied that all the children in the capital of Wutai are killed as well.
* {{Delinquents}}: Reno, Rude and Zack form a gang and prowl around Midgar at night. Reno and Rude also neglect their studies, to the point where they are in their early twenties and still in high school. Reno also smokes, drinks and vandalizes school property through his pranks.
* DemotedToExtra: Zack is very prominent in ''Shinra High'', but gets very little screentime in ''Shinra SOLDIER.''
* DerailingLoveInterests: Laura's personality radically changes the moment she is dating Sephiroth.
* DesignatedGirlFight: Generally averted, as Julia often fights against men, but in the Wutai arc, she fights the two women guardians, and Sephiroth fights the two male guardians.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: Did you just knock out Hojo's [[OneWingedAngel invincible tentacle form]] with a fire extinguisher?
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[AssholeVictim Julia]] dies in Sephiroth's arms after being shot by Hojo.
* DirtyOldMan: Hojo briefly cups Julia's breast after a torture session.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** Julia and Sephiroth are big fans of this. In response to being attacked by half the football team, (even though the football players [[CurbStompBattle lost spectacularly]]) Julia and Sephiroth get revenge by blowing up the football field during a game, openly wounding players and spectators in the process.
** During the Wutai arc, Julia tortures both her victims due to minor slights. Gorki, for daring to call Sephiroth a woman, is tortured until she screams, which includes cutting off both her arms and crushing her legs with Demi. Staniv breaks Julia's katana, so Julia paralyzes her [[EyeScream cuts out her eyeball and forces her to eat it]], and then mutilates her so she can bleed to death.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Sephiroth, Julia and Reno launch fireworks and Molotov cocktails onto a football field, injuring both teams, the spectators and damaging the premises. The way in which this is written is reminiscent of a school shooting.
* DoomedByCanon: We know from the beginning that Julia will die before the events of Nibelheim.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Julia launches a marble at Cloud's ''eye'' just because he was asleep in class and viciously chases Zack around with a sword because he accidentally entered the bathroom while she was taking a shower. Not only does she never get called out on her behavior, but everybody else either laughs at her antics or agrees with her.
* DrivenToSuicide:
** Laura kills herself after dumping Sephiroth, stating that she doesn't want to live if she can't have him. Staniv commits suicide by self-immolation after Julia tortures her and leaves her to bleed to death.
** Julia attempts this when Sephiroth finds out she used to be a prostitute, but he talks her out of it.
** Sephiroth attempts this after he is forced by Jenova to rape Julia.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Sephiroth. Ironically, it is ''Julia's'' reckless driving in bad weather that would get him nearly killed.
* EasilyForgiven:
** Zack dealt some pretty low blows to Sephiroth, helped Laura cheat on him and beat Julia within an inch of her life, leaving her bleeding and broken in a cold, dark alleyway to die. Afterwards, he is never regarded as anything more than an annoyance by Sephiroth and Julia and toward the end of ''Shinra SOLDIER'', they are on civil terms, even though Zack has never apologized or expressed any remorse for his actions.
** Reno and Rude were part of the group that beat up Julia, they too are forgiven without any apology. Reno actually becomes part of Julia's gang without ever addressing his part in the crime.
*** Reno does express reluctance in attacking Julia and he even whispers an apology into her ear when he grabs her arms. It is quite clear that he participated in the attack only because he did not dare to defy Zack, who would have otherwise beaten him as well, and he comes back later to drag Julia out on the main street so she could be found by someone.
** An odd example exists between Hojo, Julia, and Sephiroth. While the general animosity continues to exist, individual acts seem to be forgotten within an hour of them happening. For example, Hojo is trying to kill them one moment, then they escape, and the next time they encounter each other, they are on speaking terms again.
* EmoTeen: Julia.
* EmpathicEnvironment: Happens in Shinra SOLDIER during Korokou and Orion's funerals:
** Korokou was ([[ShowDontTell supposedly]]) a cheerful character, so the weather during the funeral is sunny and bright, even though the setting is the city of Midgar.
** It rains heavily and it is cold during Orion's funeral.
* EveryCarIsAPinto: Julia crashes her car in sub-zero temperatures during a white-out level blizzard. Specifically, due to a slide, she hits a lamppost in a passenger-side door collision. Despite the temperature and precipitation, and the fact that neither the engine nor the gas-tank were anywhere close to the collision point, the car manages to catch on fire.
* EveryoneWentToSchoolTogether:
** Despite canon difference in ages and hometowns Sephiroth, Cloud, Rude, Reno, Tifa, Aerith, Zack and Yuffie all go to high school together. Meanwhile, all the staff of Shinra are teachers.
** A less literal example, every single important location in Shinra High or Soldier is a retread of an important location from FFVII (and virtually all locations are used)
* EvilDuo: Julia and Sephiroth, especially in Shinra SOLDIER.
* EvilTeacher: Professor Hojo teaches science at Shinra High. He also doubles as SadistTeacher, both in the figurative way (by giving the students a pop quiz without him having taught anything the previous class) and the literal way (smacking their palms with liners wrapped in barbed wire, releasing monsters inside a classroom).
* EvilFormerFriend: Julia and Sephiroth become this for Yuffie during the Wutai war.
* ExpansionPackPast: Julia somehow managed to be given up for adoption, taken in by Tseng's family, taken back by her birth parents, forced into prostitution for a year, spend three in an insane asylum and skip a grade all before turning fifteen. Sometime during all this, she managed to obtain several powerful, mastered materia.
* EyeScream: Julia gouges Zack in the eyes during a sparring match. Later, she cuts out her opponent's eye and forces her to eat it.
* ExtremeDoormat:
** Julia is completely obsessed with and dependent on Sephiroth.
** Julia, Sephiroth, Zack, Kokorou, Rude, and Reno all display this quality when dealing with Hojo, never doing anything to stop him from torturing them and even willingly driving to his lab so he can torture them some more.
* FamilyVersusCareer: Julia reluctantly thinks about giving up her job to become a full time mother.
* FantasticRacism: President Shinra and Julia call the people of Wutai heretics. Not helped by the fact that in these stories, the mainstream religion in Midgar seems to be Christianity.
* TheFashionista: Yuffie, out of all people. Julia also places great emphasis on her clothes.
* FauxActionGirl: Julia for the entire story, up until the Wutai arc. Before then, most of her victories are either in practice, or due to luck, or the intervention of Sephiroth.
* FinalSolution: After killing Wutai's generals and ordering their army to attack the Wutai forces, Julia creates a magical barrier that surrounds the entire capital, and Sephiroth orders the Shinra scientists to toss crates full of omnivorous bugs inside the barrier, leading to everything and everyone being eaten or bitten by the insects. To finish the job, Julia summons Bahamut ZERO and wipes the capital off the face of the planet, killing ''everyone.''
* FlashbackNightmare: Julia has one related to her time as a prostitute and her rape by Jenova-controlled Sephiroth.
* FormerTeenRebel: Julia, Zack and Reno qualify, especially after the time skip in ''Shinra SOLDIER''. Julia is a stereotypical punk girl who talks tough, dresses unconventionally and doesn't shy away from participating in a deadly prank on her high school's football game. Zack prowls the streets of Midgar at night with Reno, the school's maladjusted prankster, who is implied to spend his time drinking, chain smoking and is failing all his classes. After they become Shinra employees, their lives are more stable: Julia is caught in the boring routine of her high ranking job, eventually settling down with Sephiroth and starting a family. Zack leads an uneventful life as a SOLDIER, and Reno gets rid of the aimlessness plaguing his life.
* ForTheEvulz: Hojo's Modus Operandi. Jenova as well, who's more interested in causing Julia to suffer than obtaining Gaia's energy or the Promised Land.
* FreudianExcuse: Julia and Sephiroth are implied to be the way they are because of the horrendous abuse they suffered under their parents. Notably absent for Hojo, whose evilness is vastly exaggerated.
* FriendlessBackground: Julia has no friends when she arrives at Shinra High.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Julia starts her life as the daughter of a very poor family and spends years of her teenagehood being completely terrified of her parents and allowing them to abuse her. Once she is drafted into the Shinra army however, she almost immediately becomes its amoral and arrogant Commander, with genocide and arbitrary executions (through ''torture'') as her favorite solutions to problems.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:G-M]]
* GenkiGirl: Yuffie.
* GiftedlyBad: Sephirothslave. She spent four years writing these stories and considered them her pride and joy.
* {{Goth}}: Julia, of the lone psycho variety.
* {{Gorn}}: Occasionally strays into this.
* GratuitousFrench: Misspelled or misused every time.
* GratuitousJapanese: Towards the beginning, Julia claims that her friends call her Megami, and sometimes responds with Japanese words like "hai." This quickly drops off though.
* GreenEyedMonster: Julia is envious of Laura's good looks and jealous of her relationship with Sephiroth.
* HairTriggerTemper: Professor Hojo and Julia are quick to react violently when they are annoyed.
* HappilyAdopted: Julia, before her biological family took her back.
* HappilyMarried: Sephiroth and Julia are an odd example, as they have little chemistry together and a rather passionless relationship punctuated with some moments of SickeninglySweethearts.
* HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday: Relatively minor example, but Julia will take advantage of any opportunity to point out that she is straight, and reacts violently to anybody suggesting she is gay.
* HellBentForLeather: Julia loves this trope more than Sephiroth.
* HeroKiller: Hojo is an odd example, due to the inconsistent characterization he has received. He alternates between this and being a ButtMonkey.
* HighSchoolAU: Averted. Although the fic initially comes across as this, Sephirothslave intended it to be a prequel to the actual series.
* HollywoodHealing: What magical and regular medicine can heal at any given moment depends on how dramatic it will be. Most notably, Julia is at one point poisoned. Days later, she loses most of her blood, which manages to drain her completely of the poison. Even ignoring the fact that she couldn't survive losing enough blood to remove the poison, by that time, it would have soaked into most of her organs and tissue.
* HollywoodTactics: Sephiroth and Julia's military tactics only look good because everybody else's are worse.
** A good example happens during a paint-ball training excercise. Sephiroth puts most of his forces into an ambush and then has a small force trick the entire opposing army into charging blindly. This only works because he's lucky his opponent is moving his entire forces as a single unit and not in smaller squads, and then is dumb enough to charge after a trap, instead of using his superior numbers as a systematic push.
** When they know that an enemy army is going to move on their location in three weeks, the entire Shinra army just sits there and waits for it, instead of hitting the army in transit. (particularly since the army has to march through the Midgar Swamp, which provides an amazing choke point, complete with mobility impeding swamp and a deadly, violent, snake-monster). While waiting, they decide to withdraw all training from the new recruits, and instead give extra training to the first-class [=SOLDIERs=]. They make no attempts to up defense and engage the enemy inside the city, instead of beyond the impenetrable wall. Their tactic is to literally throw grunts at the enemy until they run out of bullets and cannonballs.
** Sephiroth is the only one who thinks of launching a counter-attack, instead of waiting for the enemy to regroup and rebuild.
* HollywoodThin: Judging by the [[http://lian-hua.livejournal.com/42492.html artwork]] drawn by Sephirothslave, Julia was this. She is often described as being slender, and every artwork of her shows her as being improbably busty.
* HopeSpot: Despite considering her to be his friend, Sephiroth gives Yuffie one before he kills her mother.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Poor Yuffie...
* HumanShield: A Jenova-controlled Sephiroth uses Julia's body to shield himself from Tseng's attack.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** Sephiroth complains that he had to kill Yuffie's mother, then smirks at a distraught Yuffie later in the same chapter.
** See ProtagonistCenteredMorality
* HypocriticalHumor: Unintentional. Julia mocks a character with a fear of needles for freaking out during a mako injection. She had reacted even worse when it had been her turn.
* ICallItVera: Julia has a naginata named Ketsuki and a katana named Tachi. The latter is an example of not doing enough research, as the katana and the tachi are two different swords.
* IdiotBall: Everybody takes a turn holding this, mostly Sephiroth, Julia, Reno, Rude, Kokorou, and Zack, who will do whatever Hojo asks them to do, fully knowing that he wants to torture them.
** The biggest example is Sephiroth, who – knowing that Hojo wants to inject him with more Jenova cells – willingly goes to him for mako injections, without even checking the needle.
** Even by the standards of this fic, Julia holds the ball tight when she decides to drive super fast in white-out conditions, rather than just turn the heat up in her luxury car, resulting in her crashing the car and nearly killing Sephiroth in the process.
* IForgotICouldFly: Julia often forgets that she's a powerful spell caster in possession of several of the most powerful materia in the world. During the defense of Midgar, she remembers that she has it literally halfway through the second day of being slaughtered by the enemy forces.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: Combined with a dose of SingleTargetSexuality. Julia is friendless when she arrives at Shinra High, and craves a deep connection with someone, but her superiority complex and the perceived immaturity of everybody around her isolate and prevent her from forming meaningful bonds. Her special someone eventually turns out to be Sephiroth, and she emotionally latches onto him within minutes of their first meeting. Afterwards, he seems to be enough in terms of preferred human contact, as she never invests effort into forming any other kind of meaningful bond with anyone. Although she enjoys Yuffie's friendship, and especially the financial benefits of it, she does not put any effort into their connection and ends up pretty much friendless after she leaves highschool as a freshman.
* IgnoredEnamouredUnderling: Kristen, one of professor Hojo's assistants, is madly in love with him, but he doesn't care about her at all.
* ImAHumanitarian: A minor character from ''Shinra SOLDIER'' called Samuel considers himself "cannibalistic whenever the chance arose."
* ImpracticallyFancyOutfit:
** Julia's wedding dress consists of "countless layers of the lightest silk." The problem? Her wedding takes place in a stone cathedral, at night, on the Northern continent... the coldest place on the Planet.
** Her military uniform could count as this: it is described as a single piece, custom made leather bodysuit. One of the sporkers of the story [[http://lian-hua.livejournal.com/32816.html pointed out]] how impractical such an outfit would be not only for cold weather, but also for normal everyday actions like going to the toilet, because the bodysuit has to be removed almost entirely every single time. On top of that, wearing such a skin-tight leather bodysuit in front of her soldiers will generally make it much more difficult for her to be taken seriously in her job.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: The test subjects have to beat each other up with improvised weapons for one of their tests. For some reason, children's blocks and picture frames are the most effective objects.
* InformedAbility: At 15-16, Julia's academic tests show that she could jump directly into 12th grade, despite her spending three years in a mental institution and one as a prostitute in the slums. She is supposed to be a genius student, but the readers never get any proof of her intellectual abilities. In fact, at 22 years old, heavily pregnant Julia will claim that she does not know what to expect regarding giving birth because her ''parents did not tell her.''
* InformedAttribute:
** Julia is allegedly kind, wonderful and wise, but she never demonstrates these qualities, instead being overly violent and short-sighted. We're also told that her friends call her Megami, but nobody does.
** Sephiroth is supposedly the most desirable single male in Shinra High, but there is no evidence to support this.
** Aerith is allegedly annoying and unlikeable, but in the only scene she actively participates in, she's very kind and helpful.
* InsaneEqualsViolent: Hojo.
* InsistentTerminology:
** The author insists on calling her fanfictions ''novels''.
** Tseng is insistently referred to as Julia's foster brother in the narrative.
** Julia is almost always called Sephiroth's girlfriend or wife, as well.
* InSpiteOfANail: Drawn attention to. Sephirothslave acknowledges that Wutai must survive Sephiroth's assault so it can be rebuilt for the proper game, but then has her avatar nuke it anyway.
* InterruptedSuicide: Julia wants to jump off the roof of Shinra High, but Sephiroth grabs her in time.
* KarmaHoudini: Hojo defines this trope. Many other characters are never called out for their crimes either. Another major example is Zack, who is never punished for nearly killing Julia.
* LackOfEmpathy: Julia, Sephiroth, to a sociopathic extent. Later in the story, Tseng and Reno begin to exhibit this as well.
* LaughingMad: Sephiroth during the Fort Condor war.
* LawOfInverseFertility: Sephiroth and Julia are implied to be a chaste couple who still sleep in separate rooms after they have been living together for five years. The first time they have sex, Julia gets pregnant.
* LongestPregnancyEver: Julia ends up having this due to a number of mistakes made by the author regarding the timeline. Julia gets raped during the Wutai war (which lasted for six days), returns home and a few days after her return she somehow claims that a month has passed since the rape. She spends two weeks preparing her wedding, and another two on her honeymoon. Then, we get two headers which say "Four months later" and "Five months later" after which she gives birth. Depending on whether you believe Julia's time estimation as real or not, the pregnancy lasted for ten or eleven months.
* LoopholeAbuse: Hojo requests permission to breed Red XIII with a human female. When he initially brings it up, he implies that he has a willing volunteer, but the request he gives President Shinra merely asks for him to "take [his] pick from among the Shinra Inc. roster." He uses this to force Julia into the program.
* LoveAtFirstSight: It's implied that Julia becomes infatuated Sephiroth as soon as she sees him, and is willing to put her life in danger to save him only hours later. It's a rather unhealthy combination of lust and emotional desperation that makes her latch onto him. While he somehow finds her interesting from the start, he does not develop feelings for her until later in the story.
* LoveTriangle: Between [[TroubledButCute Sephiroth]], [[JerkSue Julia]] and [[CruelCheerleader Laura]].
* MadScientist: Hojo.
* MagicAIsMagicA: Averted. Exactly what can and cannot be cured by healing magic is very inconsistent. See DeathIsCheap and CastFromHitPoints.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Sephiroth is this during ''Shinra High''. He spends minutes locked in Julia's embrace less than three hours after meeting her, shows her around the school, sits with her in the cafeteria instead of sitting with his friends... only to defeat her with unnecessary brutality during gym spar, leaving her terrified by his coldness, and ignore her afterwards.
* MildlyMilitary: In addition to the MilitaryMaverick example below, things are no better once Sephiroth and Julia take command. Julia constantly [[TheNeidermeyer looks down on her own troops]], often citing them for their lack of discipline, but never making any attempts to correct this.
* MilitaryMaverick: Sephiroth and Julia are perfect examples of this. They go out after curfew, openly disrespect their General and lie to President Shinra regarding military matters, mobilize troops by giving fake orders and take said troops into enemy territory without their superior's knowledge (as mere troopers, no less!). While they are severely punished for breaking curfew, they are ''rewarded and praised'' for mobilizing troops without permission because that move led to the utter annihilation of the enemy. Also, their defiance towards General Heidegger and lies they told to the President are simply ignored.
* MindRape: Jenova does this to Sephiroth.
* MoodWhiplash: The stories have a very unfortunate timing between dramatic and light hearted scenes.
* MostCommonSuperpower: Julia is often described as being slender, but her artwork shows her having a very generous bosom.
* {{Mundanger}}: Sephiroth almost never comes close to getting hurt in any combat he's in, even taking on enemy snipers or monsters. Then Julia wraps their car around a lamp post, and Sephiroth nearly dies twice, once because they can't get him out of the car which is on fire, and then again because his injuries from the crash have worsened.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Julia supposedly cannot wake up without a "good, powerful dose of caffeine" and requested to have a coffee machine in her office.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:N-Z]]
* TheNeidermeyer: Julia is shown to despise the troops under her command, regarding them as unruly slobs who are beneath her and is glad to order them around and dump "menial labor" such as wiping out drug-dealers on them. She is also a highly incompetent Commander, leading her troops into an ambush during the Wutai war and nearly getting all of her scouting party murdered by ninjas. She also drove out of camp in a jeep without telling anyone where she was going, in order to get to a remote location and personally wake up a drunk Reno, when she could have delegated the task to someone else, as she should have had other, more pressing matters on her hands. The troops are never shown to be particularly warm towards her and in the end professor Hojo easily convinces twenty top soldiers to act as a firing squad and kill Sephiroth and Julia's infant son, proving that Commander Julia was not exactly adored.
* NeutralFemale: After the Wutai arc, Julia becomes this. Despite [[FauxActionGirl all her powers]], she no longer takes an active role in battles, even hiding under the bed at one point while the men fight Hojo.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Hojo successfully poisons Julia, and it appears that no one can cure it. However, while controlling Sephiroth, Jenova uses Julia as a human shield, and as a result of getting shot, Julia [[HollywoodHealing bleeds out the poison]].
* NoDressCode: This is how Julia gets away with wearing {{Stripperiffic}} clothing.
* NoPeriodsPeriod: Julia's period is only mentioned once, at the beginning of the pregnancy storyline.
* NouveauRiche:
** Julia buys only designer clothes, has a custom leather catsuit made to serve as her military uniform and in spite of professing an aversion to spending money, she openly states that she has expensive taste and has a ridiculously expensive and lavish wedding to which she invites ''the entire Shinra military.''
** Sephiroth has shades of this as well, since upon taking Julia out for dinner, he tells her that she must order the most expensive thing on the menu, as opposed to letting her choose something that she liked.
* ObligatorySwearing: Sephiroth and Hojo are glaring examples, followed by Reno.
* ObliviouslyEvil: Julia and Sephiroth find ''absolutely nothing wrong'' with genocide and torture.
* OddFriendship: ''Shinra High'' has the cool and collected Sephiroth and the bubbly, childish Yuffie. They don't seem to have anything in common and while Yuffie is devoted to Sephiroth and wants him to be happy, Sephiroth seems to tolerate her at best.
* OfficialCouple: Julia and Sephiroth. Once they become a couple, nothing short of Julia's death threatens their status.
* OffingTheOffspring: Unsuccessfully attempted by Julia's parents and Hojo.
* OmniDisciplinaryScientist: Despite how much VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII averted this, this story has Hojo as a master of medicine, technology, genetics, military training, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking blacksmithing.]]
* OneWingedAngel: Ironically, not Sephiroth, but Hojo will transform into his [[EldritchAbomination tentacled monster form]] when he needs to.
* OutOfCharacter: EVERYONE.
* OverrankedSoldier: Sephiroth and Julia become the General and Commander of the Shinra army at the ages of 18 and 16, with only a few months of training as grunts.
* PaletteSwap: Korokou Nihau, a secondary character created by Sephirothslave, is (by the author's own admission) a blond Zack. His own rather bland personality is supposed to resemble Zack's.
* ParentalIncest: Julia's father rapes her as punishment for refusing to have sex with a client.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Julia is able to level the entire Wutai capitol with her Bahamut ZERO summon, an action strangely reminiscent of an atomic bombing.
* PlotArmor:
** Hojo is the most prominent example in both stories. Although his plot armor comes and goes, as the author deems fit, when he does have it he is invincible. He is the most powerful character in the series, easily surpassing Sephiroth and Julia combined, and even when he should be eliminated or at least fired, the author throws all logic and common sense out the window and brings some [[InsaneTrollLogic ridiculous explanation]] as justification for his invincibility and exemption from the rules. By the end of ''Shinra SOLDIER,'' he is able to kill twenty first class soldiers (Shinra's elite) without breaking a sweat and his body count includes the commander of the Shinra army and her infant son, a Turk and two other first class soldiers. He doesn't get more than a demotion for killing the Turk, the two soldiers and the baby, and is never shown receiving any punishment at all for killing Julia and the other twenty soldiers.
** Julia has her lungs pierced by her own ribs due to a Demi spell. Broken, bleeding and believed dead, she is carried at a normal pace by Sephiroth to the Shinra encampment and placed inside the medical tent. Sephiroth spends some minutes staring at her and upon realizing that she was in fact still breathing, brings a scientist into the tent and they both begin healing her. Not only does Julia not die, but she recovers completely!
* PowerCreepPowerSeep: The other locations on Gaia (including minor locations like Cosmo Canyon or Fort Condor) are inflated to be equal to Shinra in either resources, military or both, to try to give Shinra more challenging opponents, or to let Julia and Sephiroth import services and goods on a greater level.
* PowerLevel: Sephiroth reveals at one point that Julia is level 68.
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Sephiroth in particular, will overreact to any affront to Julia, while ignoring if the same thing happens to somebody he doesn't know. The epitome of this comes from when he hears a report of victim getting beaten to near death while walking home at night through a dark alley. He considers it the victim's fault for being dumb enough to walk through a bad part of town, but upon finding out that it was Julia, chews out Laura for saying the exact thing he was thinking that very day.
* PsychoSerum: Jenova cells allow Jenova to possess Sephiroth, and make him try to kill his wife.
* PsychoticSmirk: Both Sephiroth and Julia exhibit this more than once.
* ThePrankster: Reno is a dark take on the trope, as he is very fond of [[DeadlyPrank deadly and destructive pranks]].
* PutOnABus:
** Ian is last seen being sent on a mission by Julia after the time skip. He is never heard of again.
** A more nagging example is Julia's ridiculously abusive, Shinra bigshot father, who disappears from the story after being wounded by Sephiroth. This could double as a PlotHole, as Julia becomes Commander of the Shinra army around six months after the incident, and spends most of her time in the Shinra HQ where her father supposedly works as well, and yet he is completely absent from the narrative.
** Cloud is drafted into the army, made fun of for a few chapters during boot camp, and then never heard from again.
* RagsToRiches: Julia endures years of financial deprivation until she becomes the Commander of the Shinra army and begins to earn her own money.
* RapeAsBackstory: Part of her ExpansionPackPast, she was forced into prostitution for a year. She was also raped by her pimp and her own father.
* RedShirtArmy: Despite being a BadassArmy in the series, the SOLDIER forces and Shinra army in general are portrayed as helpless troops, constantly getting slaughtered by any enemy force they come across.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Julia's sword, Tachi, which is important enough for her to be enraged by its destruction, is only mentioned once or twice, almost as an afterthought.
* RomanticFalseLead: Laura is introduced as a rival love interest. She starts off innocent enough, and ends up dating Sephiroth after the two bond in the hospital. However, once Sephirothslave bores of the drama, Laura [[HeelFaceTurn suddenly becomes]] [[RonTheDeathEater a conniving, shallow bitch,]] so she can dump Sephiroth and he can go back to Julia.
* RPGMechanicsVerse: A rare atttempt at a serious version. The story references things like MP, inventory, Limit Breaks and levels.
* RougeAnglesOfSatin: The author doesn't know the difference between ''than''/''then'', ''principle/principal'',''allowed/aloud.'' Among many others. She also constantly misspells Nibelheim and Heidegger.
* {{Sadist}}: Hojo and Jenova are intentional examples, but Julia stands out as an unintentional one - she is not meant to be seen as a bad guy.
* SanitySlippage: Sephiroth, toward the end of ''Shinra SOLDIER.'' The decline in his mental health is caused by Hojo murdering his son and friends and poisoning his wife. Not that he was a very mentally stable man to begin with...
* SecondLove: Sephiroth initially begins dating and falls in love with [[AllGuysWantCheerleaders Laura Summers]], but after he catches her cheating on him, he breaks up with her and immediately begins a relationship with Julia, whom he will end up marrying.
* SeriesContinuityError: The fics are supposed to line up with the game, but has characters who have not met at the start of the game interact with each other and generally makes a huge mess of the timeline.
** Perhaps the most blatant is that Yuffie, canonically five years younger than Cloud, and has never met any of the main cast before attends high school with him and is best friends with Sephiroth.
** In canon, Sephiroth was not raised by Hojo, and probably didn't even know he was his father. He had Jenova cells in him from birth and was never given any further Jenova cells or mako, and thought that Jenova was the name of his (human) mother, and had no knowledge of Cetra or alien parasites until the Nibelheim Incident. In this story, Hojo raises him, he already knows everything (which makes his mental breakdown at the Nibelheim Incident make no sense)
** Professor Ghast was in charge of the Mako experiments, not Hojo. Also they infused them with showers, not injections.
** The end of the story leads into the events of Nibelheim. Cloud, Tifa, and Yuffie should be 16, 15, and 11 years old, respectively, but are all roughly 23.
** Rather than set out from Nibelheim to fulfill his dream of becoming a SOLDIER and ultimately failing, Cloud is already in Midgard and is drafted against his will.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Julia towards Sephiroth. Reno and Ian appear to feel attracted to her, but she never has eyes for anyone other than Sephiroth.
* SleepingSingle: Sephiroth and Julia sleep separately even after living together for five years. It's only until they get married that they share a bedroom.
* ShedTheFamilyName: Julia insisted on using her foster parents' family name instead of that of her biological parents because she wished to distance herself from them as much as she could. It's never explained how come she was allowed to do that, seeing how her parents turned out to be very abusive and controlling people.
* ShipperOnDeck: During Shinra High, Yuffie is this for Julia and Sephiroth.
* ShipTease: The author vaguely hints at Korokou and Tifa during the wedding arc.
* ShootTheMessenger: Tseng shoots a messenger who merely informed them that Julia, Sephiroth, and Reno should report to Hojo to get new mako injections. He's just injured, but Tseng forbids him from seeking medical attention until he returns to deliver a counter-message to Hojo.
* ShotgunWedding: Averted. Sephiroth and Julia were planning to marry anyways, and Julia's unplanned pregnancy only sped the process up.
* ShowDontTell: A very common occurrence in these stories. Sephiroth says Julia is the kindest, most wonderful person he knows, despite her being the exact opposite. Julia says Sephiroth is the most eligible bachelor in Shinra High, even though nothing in the story suggested he was popular or the center of female attention.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Julia.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Julia is the only girl in the advanced SOLDIER training course and ends up being the only girl in the entire Shinra army.
* SociopathicSoldier:
** The ''entire'' Shinra army is comprised of this. The soldiers have no issue with murdering every single Wutai man, woman or child they meet, and are shown to not even notice the agonizing screams of the Wutai citizens slowly being eaten alive by insects, even though the Shinra army was right outside the city!
** Hojo has no problems finding twenty soldiers who are not only willing to turn on their commander, but have no problem or even hesitation in killing a newborn child.
* SourPrudes: Julia and Sephiroth. Although she accepts Sephiroth's kisses and hugs, the most Julia offers him voluntarily consists of smiles. They still sleep in different rooms after living together as a couple for five years, and look down on soldiers who visit brothels. Their own relationship is strangely devoid of passion and life.
* SpeakIllOfTheDead: The day after Laura kills herself, Julia wastes no time in calling her names. The author tries to justify that by having Laura commmit suicide, a highly out of character gesture, for the sole purpose of [[InsaneTrollLogic spiting and throwing the blame on Sephiroth,]] thus giving Julia the perfect excuse to lash out at Sephiroth's first love.
* SpinTheBottle: The only time Sephiroth and Julia decide to actually go drinking with their friends, Sephiroth suggests playing this game. However, since Julia is [[TheSmurfettePrinciple the only women in the group]], and is Sephiroth's girlfriend, it ends up creating some [[HoYay unintentional subtext.]]
* SuddenNameChange: When first mentioned, the empress of Wutai was called Shantaina. During the Wutai arc, however, her name inexplicably changes to Keara, most likely because the author forgot that she had already given her character a name.
* StandardFemaleGrabArea: Empress Keara of Wutai, a powerful summoner and warrior, is rendered completely helpless when Sephiroth wraps one single arm around her.
* TakingTheBullet: Julia does this for Sephiroth towards the end of Shinra SOLDIER. Reno does this for Julia, but his gesture does not get him any kind of recognition, not even a thank you.
* TimeSkip: In Shinra SOLDIER, after the Challenges are over and Sephiroth and Julia become the rulers of the army, there is a time skip of five years. Aside them moving back in with professor Hojo and becoming bored with their daily routines, nothing much changes.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Both Sephiroth and Julia are much more unlikeable in Shinra SOLDIER than in Shinra High. Committing genocide and feeling smugly satisfied aftewards might have had something to do with that. [[JerkSue Among many other horrible]] [[ExaltedTorturer acts.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: Sephiroth and Julia's starts when Jenova takes control of Sephiroth and forces him to rape Julia. This is followed by the news that Hojo wants to mate RedXIII with Julia, causing much anguish to the couple. When Julia finds out she is pregnant and thus cannot participate in the experiment anymore, Hojo begins to stalk and attack them, culminating in him killing two of their friends and murdering their baby. Then, the professor slips more Jenova cells into Sephiroth's bloodstream, causing him to fall under the alien's control and hurt Julia some more. Afterwards, Hojo poisons Julia and is indirectly responsible for her getting shot. In the end, he manages to kill her and break Sephiroth's will to live.
* UncannyValleyMakeup: Julia, who is described as having a paper-white face, wears black lipstick and black eyeshadow.
* UnfriendlyFire: During the battle with Fort Condor, General Heidegger shoots Julia in her thigh from behind Midgar's defenses, a gesture motivated by a growing feeling of personal insecurity and hatred towards her.
* VillainProtagonist: The fic co-stars Sephiroth, the villain of the main series.
* WackyMarriageProposal: Averted. Sephiroth takes Julia to an expensive restaurant and after discussing work and other unnamed personal matters for a while, he goes down on one knee and proposes.
* WarArc: Shinra SOLDIER has two war arcs, one with Fort Condor and another with Wutai.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Sephiroth and Julia used to be friends with Yuffie, but during the Wutai arc Sephiroth ends up brutally murdering Yuffie's mother in front of her, as retaliation for Julia's (apparent) death. This leaves Yuffie broken and devastated. Sephiroth and Julia, on the other hand, ''never think about her again'' after the war is over.
* WhereDoesHeGetAllThoseWonderfulToys: Julia has some of the most powerful materia in the world, including maxed out heal/cure materia, all three Bahamuts, and Knights of the Round. No mention is ever made to where she got them.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim:
** A rare protagonist version. Hojo is openly torturing Sephiroth, Julia and others, and later explicitly trying to kill them. Even though they have him at their mercy repeatedly, they never once consider just killing him, even as they acknowledge that he will continue to hound them.
** Jenova is allegedly trying to kill Julia, but is horribly impractical about it. Sephiroth is always described as carrying his sword with him, yet when she possesses him, she never tries to stab Julia, or simply strangle her with Sephiroth's super human strength.
* {{Workaholic}}: Julia's life revolves almost entirely around her job and she is at a complete loss about what to do with herself when she's on maternity leave. She has no hobbies and no friends in Midgar and is bored to tears when she's by herself with no paperwork to do. In fact, the only time of the day in which she's not whining is when Sephiroth brings her paperwork.
* WouldBeRudeToSayGenocide: Of the Type A variety, committed by Sephiroth and Julia in Wutai.
* WouldHitAGirl: Sephiroth, Hojo and Zack, all towards Julia.
