''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8116027/1/Fantasy-of-Utter-Ridiculousness Fantasy of Utter Ridiculousness]]'' is a ''WesternAnimation/MegasXLR'' / ''Franchise/TouhouProject'' crossover Fanfic written during May 2012 by Curtis Wildcat. It consists of 8 chapters: the main story, an alternate ending, and an Extra Stage. It can also be found at Archive of our Own [[https://archiveofourown.org/works/27714215/chapters/67830395 here.]]

While Coop is putting the moon back together during the aftermath of the Glorft's failed attempt to crash it into the Earth, Megas is attacked by a Lunarian mech. During the fight that follows, an attempt is made by the Watatsuki sisters to warp them directly into the Lunar Capital, all the better to sate the Earthlings' curiosity about the previously-unknown inhabitants. Instead, Megas, with Coop and his friends inside, are sent to Gensokyo when the teleportation technology malfunctions.

For a land that just got finished facing off against the worst weather in its history, the perpetrator of that disaster surely can't be what they need...

The Extra Stage has Coop and the others back in Gensokyo on an alleged gift-giving tour, with his presence causing the plans of some of Gensokyo's finest to go off the deep end.

!! Tropes seen in both parts of ''Fantasy of Utter Ridiculousness'' include:

* BatmanGambit:
** It is implied that the Watatsuki sisters were aware of the Guardsman's potential malfunction and used it to their advantage to eject Megas from Lunarian airspace, keeping its occupants out of the Capital.
** In the Extra Stage, ''Jamie'' of all people manages to pull one of these off, successfully goading Yuuka into insulting Megas---which happens to be one of Coop's Berserk Buttons.
* BottomlessMagazines: This is how the Spell Card system translates Megas's missile-based weaponry. As long as it's firing danmaku, Megas will never run out of firepower. This doesn't seem to apply to its more specialized weaponry, such as the beam-gatling guns used against Yuuka.[[labelnote:*]]Previously used against the REGIS Mk. V.[[/labelnote]]
* ChekhovsGun: Marisa's size-changing powder. At first, it only turned fairies into suitable punching bags for Megas. [[spoiler: Later, it's used to give Yuuka the means to fight Megas on even terms.]]
* CoolVersusAwesome: Megas. Versus. Suika. The author has even gone on record as saying this matchup is the main reason why he wrote the story in the first place. The Extra Stage ups the ante by pitting Megas against a scaled-up Yuuka Kazami.
* CrackFic: When you get right down to it, the entire story is this: Coop, his friends and Megas go to Gensokyo to fight giant fairies, Suika and Yuuka for the sake of having a giant robot fight giant youkai.
* CreditsGag: The explanations in the Author's Notes are separated by one-paragraph depictions of events taking place during later visits to Gensokyo, mimicking the style used throughout Megas XLR's run. The gag returns in the Extra Stage's epilogue.
* DarkHorseVictory:
** The draw of the main story was Megas vs. Suika. [[spoiler: It's safe to say no one in-universe was expecting Marisa, who wasn't anywhere near the battleground.]]
** In the Extra Stage, Reimu, Marisa, Alice, Patchouli and Reisen engage in an authorized Mêlée à Trois (described below) in order to settle a massive argument between the five of them. Coop ends up the winner when, desiring to make them stop, he decides to "gift" them with Megas's ''Super Destructor Mode''.
* DefeatMeansRespect: [[spoiler: While Suika never becomes friends with Coop after her defeat, she becomes more willing to give him the benefit of a doubt once her gourd is recovered. She later views the Megas-Yuuka duel as great entertainment and outright salutes her former opponent.]]
* DidntSeeThatComing:
** Yukari admits as much after witnessing the lunar explosion, and is later sidelined when Megas makes its sudden arrival in Gensokyo.
** From the Extra Stage: Patchouli throwing Reimu catches ''everyone'' off guard.
* TheGlovesComeOff:
** Suika breaks out one of her higher-tier attacks, ''One-Oni Wrecking Machine'', in part to finish her fight with Megas quickly but mostly because she hated the idea of going cold turkey in regards to her alcohol.
** Partway through their fight, Coop is able to nail Yuuka with [[SpeedBlitz the Nitrous]] and slam her into a plateau a kilometer away from where they started. This moment is what convinces Yuuka to stop taking it easy on Megas and break out her old attack patterns from ''Lotus Land Story'', silently vowing to rip the mech apart.
* HoldYourHippogriffs: Alice's version of "Oh my God!" is stated to be "Dear sweet mother of Makai!", which makes sense given her younger self's origin in ''Mystic Square''.
* ImagineSpot:
** After Coop requests a magic demonstration, preferably something that doesn't involve pulling a rabbit out of a hat, Alice has a brief mental image of Reisen being pulled out of Marisa's hat.
** Patchouli gets one of Marisa driving Megas and destroying the Mansion’s library, after which she considers preventing Marisa from doing so to be a higher priority than taking her books back. It wasn’t likely to happen, but by then she didn’t care.
* LampshadeHanging: There's a lot of this starting when after Coop says that there's enough time to fly home and catch the start of the Rogue Wrestler trilogy after fixing the moon and Jamie says that he bets that they'll get caught up in a situation that could have been avoided if they'd just gone home earlier. Then, when Kyla shows up, Jamie first says "...Like I was saying..." and then when Kyla introduces herself as part of the Lunar Defense Corps, Coop and Kiva are confused with Kiva asking since when was there a sentient race on the moon and Jamie wondering where they were when the Glorfts were trying to crash the moon into the Earth as the aliens didn't make a big secret of it.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall:
** The characters notice that there is music in the background of each battle. During the Mêlée à Trois she is involved in later, this is the first warning Alice receives when Megas's ''Saturday Night: Super Destructor Mode'' is preceded by the sounds of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9KgxPcMSgI Midnight Rodeo.]]
** At the end of the main story, Jamie points out something else out of place: everyone in Gensokyo, situated in Japan, was speaking perfect English.
** Marisa claims that she and Reimu both become younger while incidents are in progress, attempting to explain why the both of them look like adolescents despite being at least in their 20s. Reisen is quick to point out that this doesn't make sense.
* {{Magitek}}:
** [[spoiler: In the Alternate Ending, Coop combines Patchouli's "Philosopher's Stone" card with Megas's systems. The resulting multi-element attack finishes off Suika and demolishes most of the Scarlet Devil Mansion's library in one go.]]
** [[spoiler: ''Divine Northern Fist: Fantastic Piledriver.'' A demonstration of what would happen if Megas had access to Reimu's ''Fantasy Nature''.]]
* ObliviousToHints: Patchouli, at least when it comes to the idea that Jamie isn't talking with her just to shoot the breeze. Koakuma tries and fails to spell it out for her.
* OhCrap:
** Sakuya's initial reaction when she realizes the threat that the newcomers and the "statue" potentially pose.
** Suika's response [[spoiler: when she fails to react in time to the battle's final attack.]]
** Patchouli reacts with this later when she realizes that yes, that silhouette on the horizon ''is'' Megas's.
** Reimu, Marisa, Alice (and her dolls), Patchouli and Reisen share a collective one just before being on the receiving end of a Spell Card-ized Super Destructor Mode.
* OriginalFlavour: One of the author's stated intentions when writing the story was to adhere as closely as possible to the source material for both series, evading most of the memes and fanon associated with Gensokyo and its residents.[[note]]With the odd exception; Remilia diving under the bed while a storm was in progress could be seen as a reference to the "Charisma Break" meme, though by the author's admission he was not aware of said meme's existence when that particular chapter was written.[[/note]] The end result looks as if it falls squarely into Megas's canon, while simultaneously having the feel of one of Touhou's supplementary manga.
* OutsideContextProblem: Megas is this to Gensokyo as a whole, as its tendency to cause mass destruction in ways that the land's residents simply aren't prepared for serves as a tremendous threat to the status quo. Making the issue thornier is that for all the trouble it brings, [[spoiler:Yukari still believes wholeheartedly that Megas is the key to ensuring Gensokyo's continued existence in the wake of the future's Glorft invasion,]] which means that destroying the mech is ''not'' an option.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Both major fights are brought about because of this.
** While en route to the Human Village to buy supplies for Reimu, Suika was passing by the area where Megas was cleaning house with the mob of giant fairies. She loses the Ibuki Gourd by complete accident, and in her drunken stupor she starts to believe that Coop--who had never met her before--had taken it intentionally. Coop tries to claim that he had no idea what was going on, but this only provokes Suika into super-sizing herself and saying the page quote.
** During what was supposed to be a friendly meeting between Coop and Yuuka, Megas accidentally kicks Rumia into the Garden of the Sun, breaking several sunflowers. Due to her resulting anger, Yuuka never even ''tries'' to figure out the truth behind what happened until ''after'' the fight is over: flowers were killed, Megas's crew were the only ones there that she could see, so obviously they must be guilty.
* PreMortemOneLiner:
** One from Suika right before launching a massive firebomb at Megas. It doesn't take.
---> "Try ''this'' on and see if it fits!"
** Another one from Coop towards Yuuka. A bit downplayed since Yuuka's in no danger of death, but it's the thought that counts.
--->"Got a message to you from one champ to another..." (begins his final attack) '''''"ROOCCCK OONNNNNN!"'''''
* SeinfeldianConversation:
** A conversation between Coop and Jamie in Chapter Four, revolving around bacon being the highest form of life on Earth, would've ended up as this if the giant fairies hadn't picked that moment to attack. Alice makes no attempt to understand what they're talking about.
** An encounter between Alice, Marisa, Patchouli and Reisen in the Extra Stage degenerates into a drawn-out argument, the topics of which range from Marisa's thieving tendencies to Reisen's memetic "useless little bunny" status.
* ShipTease: [[CrackPairing Jamie and Patchouli. Also, Koakuma and the junk man Goat]].
* TemptingFate:
** Coop, regarding Suika's desire to wreck Megas if the Ibuki Gourd isn't returned:
-->"If it means taking her down a few pegs to get her to stop, then she's more than welcome to try!"
** After witnessing Yukari ''immediately'' leave to investigate Megas's return to Gensokyo, Ran muses that it's not as if the night could get any stranger. Immediately lampshaded by the narration.
** After subjecting Yuuka to Megas's Nitrous and burying her in a plateau, Coop confidently states that she's down for the count. All he succeeded in doing was getting Yuuka to bust out her old attack patterns.
** In Sagume Kishin's cameo, she's getting ready to reopen a museum in the Lunar Capital that was closed temporarily... then promptly ruins it by saying that it was going to be a good day for her. [[RealityWarper True to her ability,]] a "stray" shot from Megas wipes the museum off the map.
* VictimizedBystander:
** Pop TV memorabilia and the Three Mischievous Fairies don't mix.
** Seija ends up as this several times, first when Yuuka is testing her enhanced firepower, and then again later [[spoiler: after the Garden of the Sun's destruction sends a sunflower head rocketing into her face]].
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Patchouli, having spent her entire life in the confines of the Mansion's library, is completely clueless to Jamie's attempts to sweet-talk her. When she hears Jamie's use of the word "chicks" in conversation, she assumes that he works as a farm hand; Koakuma tries to spell it out for her that Jamie was hitting on her, to no avail.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Main and Alternate]]

!! The main story and Alternate Ending contains examples of the following tropes:

* AccidentalHero: [[spoiler: Marisa, who was trying to free herself from a junk pile with a ''Magiccannon: Final Master Spark'' and ended up wasting Suika, who was about to finish off Megas, with it.]]
* AnAesop: What lesson does Patchouli learn by the time the Alternate Ending runs its course? [[spoiler: Never give one of your Spell Cards to someone who takes after Marisa in terms of problem solving.]]
* AnswerCut: Coop wonders at one point just who in their right mind would enjoy ''tofu''. Cue cut to Ran Yakumo, wondering why she feels she ought to defend her snack choices.
* ArbitrarySkepticism: Averted with Jamie, who points out that they ride around in a stolen robot from the future to fight space squids (also from the future) on a fairly regular basis, also bringing up some of their more outlandish adventures as well, as reasons why they shouldn't dismiss the existence of magic.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking:
-->'''Jamie:''' So, who else are we going to meet today? Living phantoms[[note]]Yuyuko[[/note]]? Talking cats[[note]]Chen[[/note]]? Tofu enthusiasts?
* ArtisticLicenseEngineering: Lampshaded with Megas's Plot Sensitive Button when it reads "Technology does not work this way", just before Coop fires a reverse MIRV at Suika.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: The giant fairies, though considering it's a crossover with ''WesternAnimation/MegasXLR'', it's not really that surprising.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** Marisa is able to accomplish this, although she isn't aware of it.
** In Chapter 4, Alice is preparing for the unsavory task of dodging attacks from three giant fairies, whose danmaku have become massive to match. Cue the sun, literally, as Patchouli drops her Royal Flare spell card on their heads.
* BigNo:
** [[spoiler: Coop's reaction at the end when Jamie realizes the power must have gone out at Coop's house due to the channel displaying 2 and the nearby clock's display being a blinking 12:00, meaning [[FauxHorrific Coop missed the Rogue Wrestler Trilogy!]] An annoyed Kiva covers her ears.]]
** [[spoiler: Patchouli's reaction when she discovers that most of the Mansion's library was destroyed in the Alternate Ending.]]
* CultureBlind: Alice realizes this about Coop when he, as a visitor, gave her something to drink instead of the other way around.
* CurbstompBattle: Megas deals two of these, one against Kyla's Guardsman and the other against the giant fairies.
* DeconstructionFic: One common plot in Touhou fanfiction involves one or more characters being dropped into Gensokyo and adjusting to life there, usually because of Yukari (or in this story, because of the Lunarians). The problem here arises when its Coop and the others, with [[HumongousMecha Megas]] in tow, that are warped on in; by the time the battles run their course, Reimu and Yukari are both in agreement that they do ''not'' belong. [[spoiler:Granted, Yukari has her own reasons for wanting to keep Megas as far from Gensokyo as possible...]]
* DestructiveSavior: The Lunarians thank Coop (albeit not in person) for getting rid of the Glorft base in the Moon, but they deemed him so dangerous that they decided to put him down. Then again, this pretty much ''is'' Coop's MO...
* DeusExMachina: In true ''Megas XLR'' fashion. [[spoiler: Take a bow, Marisa.]]
* DeusExitMachina: Hello, Megas. Good-bye, Yukari. See you when you wake up.
* DisasterDominoes: One of these starts with Megas’s teleportation into Gensokyo, and ends with Marisa being injured and stuck under her collection of trash. She doesn’t hold it against Coop, thankfully.
* DopeSlap: In the Author's Notes at the end of Chapter Six, Koakuma does this to Jamie so that he stops hitting on Patchouli. Doubles as a MomentKiller.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Alice misunderstands "Megas" to mean that the mech is a ''magus''. Sakuya, who was eavesdropping on the group when they met, becomes unnerved when she comes to the same conclusion.
* ExcusePlot: The Lunarians, Alice's danmaku demonstration, and the giant fairy attack all serve one purpose: letting Megas fight Suika.
* {{Fangirl}}: Cirno becomes one of Megas after the robot car uses its ice sword to great effect, though [[spoiler: Marisa's intervention]] spooks her enough to flee.
* FearOfThunder: Flandre, of all people. The weather patterns caused by the lunar explosion were long-lasting and intense enough that she was ''scared sane.''
* FishOutOfWater: [[spoiler: Patchouli's fate in the Alternate Ending. May also be a case of ''temporal'' water as well, given the difference in the settings.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Throughout the story, a trapped Marisa can be seen struggling to grab her mini-hakkero that's just ''this... much...'' out of reach. No guesses for what happens when she finally reaches it.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: While Patchouli is chewing out Remilia near the end of the story, Flandre is snacking on the strawberry-flavored ice chunks created by Megas's clash with Suika.
* GenericGraffiti: Marisa tries to engage in this by adding her hat to the female silhouettes on Megas's mudflaps, but Coop stops her in time.
* GoingColdTurkey: Suika all but outright states that this is the sort of thing she prefers to avoid doing. As the battle with Coop begins and wears on, she becomes increasingly sober, understandable and able to think more clearly. Since she absolutely ''loves'' her booze, she becomes desperate enough to pull out ''One-Oni Wrecking Machine'' to try and get the fight over with.
-->''"The more I drink, the stronger I become. Sobriety is not a pleasant feeling to me, and you've pushed me very close to that point."''
* {{Golem}}: In addition to the "magus" deal described above, Megas is mistaken for a giant statue or puppet by Alice and the residents of the SDM.
* HalfHumanHybrid: At one point, Jamie announces to Patchouli and Kiva that one of his ancestors was a Youkai... before immediately turning this around by saying that he was just messing with them.
* IKnowMortalKombat: Since it comes off as one big game, Coop is able to get the hang of Spell Card-based combat rather quickly.
* ImprovisedPlatform: During the brawl with the giant fairies, Megas uses one of them as a means to gain enough height to deliver an elbow drop to another.
* InsultBackfire: At some point, Marisa attempted to insult Yuuka by calling her a pansy. Understandably, she took it as a compliment. The failed insult gets a CallBack in the Extra Stage.
* KillItWithIce: Megas's ice sword. Fittingly, it's powered by a Stratospheric Strawberry Slime-flavored Mega Slush.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: Suika says this almost word for word when she thinks Coop is deliberately withholding her prized gourd from her. [[spoiler: One of the giant fairies Megas was fighting was responsible, albeit accidentally.]]
* LightheartedRematch: One of the scenes post-ending suggests that Coop and Suika have one of these later, this time taking place in an unknown location and refereed by Yukari.
* MadeOfIron: Yukari. Even after getting rammed by a mecha many times her size, she's not unconscious for long.
* MultipleEndings:
** The main story has the heroes surviving Suika's wrath [[spoiler: with help from Marisa]], having a victory meal at the Scarlet Devil Mansion, then heading home. No strings attached.
** The Alternate Ending, which depicts what would happen if Megas had been able to counterattack Suika instead of dodging her final strike, [[spoiler: ends with the Mansion's library in ruins and Patchouli stuck in Jersey City until it can be rebuilt]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** Destruction visited upon the Forest of Magic? Marisa trapped in her own house? The giant fairies, and the subsequent showdown with Suika? Yukari, who could've prevented it all at the outset, getting decked on accident when Megas first arrives? Just another day in the life of Coop.
** The Lunarians admit that they had no idea what the Glorft were planning and were mostly hiding from them, but that if MEGAS (and her crew) hadn't been there, they probably would have stayed hidden until the Glorft would have gone away... meaning that both the Lunarians and the Earth would have been destroyed. They give this realization to themselves and resolve to be more decisive next time.
* PerpetualStorm: The chaotic weather disasters that struck Gensokyo following the moon explosion lasted for some time, though how long exactly isn't indicated. If Coop hadn't taken Megas up to repair the lunar surface, it likely would have lasted for much longer.
* RetCon: The Alternate Ending was initially supposed to be a non-canon "What If?" scenario. Eventually it was incorporated into the series' timeline via the Extra Stage, if only as one of a series of bad dreams Patchouli was having.
* ShaggyDogStory: Coop initially wanted to get back to Jersey City quickly in order to catch a wrestling-based movie, only taking his time when he realized that his VCR was set to record it on its own. Then when everything's said and done, Jamie realizes that there was a power outage while they were gone...
* ShoutOut: [[ShoutOut/FantasyOfUtterRidiculousness Has its own page.]]
* StargazingScene: The story opens with Tewi, Meiling, Alice, and Ran all regarding the night sky for their own reasons, putting them in perfect position to see the lunar explosion caused by the destroyed Glorft base.
* StaringKid: Flandre serves this role during the Suika fight.
--->"Cooolll."
* TrashOfTheTitans: The contents of Marisa’s house, of course, though on this occasion it almost proves to be her undoing: when Megas first appears, a Disaster Dominoes effect ends with her half-buried in her collectibles, leaving her a non-factor for most of the main story.
* UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny: See ''Cool Versus Awesome'' above.
* WaterWakeup: The inquisitive fairy maid tasked with waiting on Yukari at the SDM doesn't seem to realize that a pitcher of water is ''not'' how you're supposed to wake sleeping people up. A minute after doing this, the frightened fairy is forced to flee from the "scary eyeball gap lady's" wrath.
* WhatIf: The basis of the Alternate Ending. What if Coop was able to defend against and counterattack Suika's final strike instead of resorting to evasion?

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Extra Stage: Fire Flower]]

!! Tropes specific to the Extra Stage include:

* AllJustADream: The events of the alternate ending turn out to be a dream of Patchouli's.
* AndThereWasMuchRejoicing: A squad of fairies are on hand to offer an obligatory "Yay!" both times Seija gets smacked by something.
* AssholeVictim: Given that Seija was plotting to turn Gensokyo upside down, something that she gets around to doing much later in ''Double Dealing Character'', the fairies in the area aren't really complaining when something hits her in the face at high speed and bowls her over.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Alice likes the scarf she was given, enough that she gets distracted by its quality several times during Coop's second visit.
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Yuuka's reason for attacking Megas? "You killed my flowers. Prepare to die." [[spoiler: By the time she realizes that Coop's involvement was accidental at best, the Garden of the Sun is all but obliterated.]]
* TheBadGuyWins: Yukari tells Ran at one point that if Megas was ever destroyed, Gensokyo would cease to exist. She elaborates on this much later, stating that if Megas were to fall "and never get up", nothing would stop the Glorft from conquering Earth and invoking Gensokyo's CessationOfExistence: [[spoiler: something that she specifically became a youkai and traveled back in time to prevent. She even refers to it outright as a Bad Ending.]]
* BadassBoast: Yuuka delivers one while charging up the Double Spark, saying that Marisa's rendition of the attack is nothing like the real deal.
-->"...But fair warning: Marisa's spunk in stealing my attack is to be admired, but when you absolutely ''must'' reduce everything in your path to a mist of atoms, '''accept...''' '''''no... SUBSTITUTES!"'''''
* BatterUp: Yuuka briefly uses her parasol as a baseball bat to try and hit energy bolts back at Megas, complete with a ball-strike count.
* BeneathTheMask: [[spoiler: Yukari's known as a superlative chessmaster with a cunning mind, a brilliantly lazy trickster capable of playing both sides against each other. After everyone except Yuyuko leaves following the fight, we find out that part of it's a facade: she's aware of Evil Coop's existence and how important Megas really is to Gensokyo, and she's dreading what could possibly happen with the situation completely out of her hands.]]
* BeyondTheImpossible: Even in a place like Gensokyo, Patchouli--anemic, asthmatic, lacking in Vitamin A[[labelnote:*]]which among other things helps fight against illnesses[[/labelnote]] and physical strength--should not have been able to throw a grown person any sort of distance without outside help. No one told ''her'' that, and it's likely she would not have cared about that or the fact that it was Reimu she had thrown: she was angry, she was staying as far from Megas from possible, '''''and that was final.''''' Alice guessed after the deed was done that Patchouli was more like Coop than she realized.
* BigEater: Yuyuko, of course. She lampshades it later, saying that she likes good food as much as the next person but that she wasn't ravenous enough to eat ''all'' the snacks Coop gave her.
* BizarreAndImprobableBallistics: During the "Batter Up" segment mentioned above, one of the pitches Coop has Megas throw is the knuckleball, which in real life has a reputation for being difficult to keep track of due to its unpredictable flight pattern. Much like plenty of professional batsmen, Yuuka can't get a handle on its trajectory in time.
* BlindedByTheLight:
** Megas pulls this on Yuuka with floodlights hidden in its arms behind its hands, as a precursor to triggering the high-speed Nitrous.
** Happens to Momiji at Youkai Mountain when the super-sized Double Spark is fired, demonstrating the downside of telescopic vision.
* BuriedAlive: What happens to Yuuka after Megas connects with the Nitrous and slams her into a plateau. It doesn't last.
* CallBack: Multiple ones to both series. Examples include:
** The return of Megas's "La Cucaracha" horn, Super Destructor Mode, and the Double Deuce.
** Marisa and Reimu's respective hair colors during their PC-98 days. Yuuka herself is still sporting the hairstyle and clothes from her initial appearances.
** Yuuka's above-mentioned boast stating that she'll reduce her opponents to a mist of atoms.
** Marisa ''tries'' to make one to the time [[spoiler: Alice was roped into working as a maid back in her PC-98 days]], only to be sharply interrupted. This doubles as a SeriesContinuityError, since despite the implication that Yuuka was responsible, it was actually Mima.
** Yukari asks Yuyuko why she was woken up using almost the exact same words Jamie spoke to Coop back in ''Megas XLR's'' first episode.
* CallForward: The loud rock music blaring from Megas during its fights is hinted to have been Mystia's inspiration for forming Choujuu Gigaku years later.
* TheCameo:
** Mystia is seen on the outskirts of the Yuuka fight, and it's clear that the music she hears strikes a chord with her...
** Momiji, Keine, and Tenshi are among those watching the fight from their respective homes.
** One of the deleted scenes depicted Mokou seeing Megas return to Gensokyo and deciding that hunger was messing with her mind.
* CastFullOfCrazy: Everything that Reisen experiences over the course of the Extra Stage leads her to conclude that everyone in Gensokyo is a complete lunatic.
* CatapultNightmare: Immediately following a dream depicting an unorthodox library raid, Patchouli jerks awake and screams Marisa's name.
* CatchAndReturn: This is what triggers the above "Batter Up" sequence; Megas catches some of Yuuka's danmaku and throws them back one by one.
* CloseCallHaircut: Megas's Idiot Gun misses Yuuka almost entirely, managing only to singe her locks in passing.
* ClothingDamage: Subverted during the Yuuka fight: Jamie is quietly disappointed to note that despite all the damage Megas was dealing, Yuuka's clothes were barely even phased.
* CommonalityConnection: This is what helps Reisen, who normally doesn't like humans, form a friendship with Kiva: both of them were soldiers with their respective factions that weren't serving at present, both of them daily had to put up with the whimsical actions of their associates, and they've both had to adjust to entirely new circumstances. [[note]]And it helped that Kiva knew how to show respect, as opposed to Coop and Jamie.[[/note]]
* CrazyEnoughToWork: Reimu's plan for ending the Yuuka fight without any casualties; she knew there was a chance that it would end up killing her (and erasing Gensokyo by extension), but she does it anyway with no justification other than "this entire evening has been stupid enough to begin with".
* CreepyHighPitchedVoice: Immediately after her Rage-Breaking Point and burst of strength, Patchouli's voice gets temporarily stuck in this trope due to extreme pain. Her follow-up threat--ability to carry it out notwithstanding--becomes more squeaky than truly threatening.
* DeathGlare: Reimu gives Coop one after he gets on Yuuka's bad side, though he's too distracted by the flower-loving youkai to notice.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Lampshaded by both Yuuka and Reimu following the end of the former’s fight. Defied, as Yuuka’s adverse to the idea and ultimately never goes along with it even after things are cleared up between her and Coop.
* DreamingOfThingsToCome:
** The medicine that Patchouli takes to deal with her illnesses causes her to start seeing possible futures in her sleep.
** [[spoiler: In her youth, Maribel had a fever-induced dream depicting Megas and some of Coop's foes, ending with the Glorft invasion and Gensokyo's destruction. Realizing that Megas was the key, she began taking the steps needed to become a youkai and ensure the mech's survival---and by extension, Gensokyo's as well.]]
* DudeNotFunny: Reisen has this reponse when Eirin gives her some herbs and spices from the kitchen to take with her, shortly after she'd just gotten done reassuring the rabbit that Reimu wouldn't turn her into stew for not safeguarding the Outsiders.
* EndOfAnAge: In the form of Yuuka. Whereas Reimu, Marisa, and Alice--the other mainstays from the PC-98 era--have all undergone major changes in their lives since the events of ''Mystic Square'', Yuuka is the only one still fully sporting her physical appearance and attacks from the games in question, not using any patterns from ''Phantasmgoria of Flower View''. [[spoiler: Following her battle with Megas, she takes note of the increasing number of powerful figures that have been making themselves known and finally decides to get with the times.]]
* EurekaMoment: When Coop is able to attack both Yuuka and her clone in the midst of a Double Spark, Reimu has a flashback to the events of ''Imperishable Night'' and the teamwork needed to resolve the incident... and it's there that she's finally able to figure out how to get everyone out of the fight alive.
* EvilIsHammy: Well, not "evil" per se, but Yuuka's BerserkButton ''was'' pushed before her fight with Megas. The ham slowly builds up during the battle, culminating in a scream of ''"OBLIVION AWAITS!"'' when she fires her Double Spark. All traces of hamminess disappear after she finally has a chance to calm herself down.
* EvilLaugh: Marisa has one, at least in Patchouli's imagination.
* EvilRedhead: Granted this ''was'' Marisa's original look when she debuted in ''Story of Eastern Wonderland'', but here that appearance is revealed to be the result of a magic accident that took place when she was still apprenticing under Mima. Reimu's thoughts show that she'd mistaken it for a wig all those years.
* ExpressiveShirt: As with the games, the pattern on Yuyuko’s kimono changes to reference the plot--in this case, an array of fiery sparks.
* EyeColourChange: Alice’s eyes do this, shifting from a calm blue to a bright yellow if she’s struggling to keep her more severe emotions in line--which usually means that either Marisa or Coop are present.
* FastballSpecial: How does Patchouli get out of having to escort Megas? ''She throws Reimu at it.'' Granted the sheer stress of doing so [[SquishyWizard does a number on her,]] but somehow it still works out.
* FireForgedFriends: Coop and the others become these from Reimu's perspective as a result of the Yuuka fight, though it's not until after they leave Gensokyo that she finds herself admitting it.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Yukari determines that Megas's special ability is fairly mundane. However, it still gives a good explanation for how Coop escaped the Infinity Zone...
--> ''"It's Megas's ability that allowed them passage... it can smash things. This isn't like the young Scarlet's ability, mind you. Out and out destruction isn't guaranteed. It won't annihilate something from the word 'go'. Rather, it's what it says on the box: it smashes. Short and simple. Whether it's the armored chassis of an opposing robot or the emptiness of the void... if Coop decides that something's in his way'' and he does not stop, ''there's a very strong chance that Megas will demolish it by the time he's done with it."''
* GotVolunteered: See "Fastball Special" above. Reimu really shouldn't have told Patchouli to suck it up and deal with it...
* GreenAroundTheGills: Happens to Reimu after Megas puts on a massive burst of speed. Carsickness is a universal concept, it seems.
* HeroicRROD: Patchouli goes through one of these after the above Fastball Special that takes her a while to fully recover from.
* IncessantMusicMadness: Megas's "La Cucaracha" horn does this to Alice, waking her up out of a sound sleep. On a lesser note, it also grabs the attention of Reimu, Marisa, and Patchouli from elsewhere in Gensokyo.
* IgnoredEnemy: Reimu shows up to deal with Megas's return and break up an argument between the magicians and Reisen, obviously angry at the proceedings... but after some initial banter the encounter derails itself right back into the argument, much to her exasperation.
* ImplacableMan: Yuuka. Until the battle's finale, nothing that Coop and company can throw at her does more than temporarily slow her down.
* ImportantHaircut: [[spoiler: While recovering from the Megas duel, Yuuka considers getting one of these to better fit in with the changing times. If ''Phantasmgoria of Flower View'' is any indication, she went through with it.]]
* InvulnerableKnuckles: Subverted and played straight. After trading punches with Yuuka a few times Megas's hands start to break, forcing Coop to jettison them in exchange for new ones. By contrast, Yuuka's hands are none the worse for wear.
* LittleNo: This is Patchouli's initial reaction to losing at rock-paper-scissors.
* LivingBattery: [[spoiler: Reimu willingly turns herself into one of these temporarily as a means of bestowing Megas with her power-set.]]
* LoadingScreen: Emulated at the start of the Stage, with statements that borrow from the earlier Windows games. To-wit, the end of the chapter depicts a Windows [=OS=] shutting down [[spoiler: before Yukari decides to interrupt.]]
* LookBehindYou: Marisa attempts this in order to get out of making a promise to Alice and Patchouli. It doesn't work out.
* LosingAShoeInTheStruggle: Patchouli's cap goes flying off when she violently chucks Reimu at Megas.
* MeleeATrois: It turns out there's a provision in the Spell Card rules for this. At least four people with no prior alliances need to agree to a fight, and it has to take place in open air so that there's enough room to dodge the sheer volume of danmaku that would result. One Spell Card is allowed per combatant, and the winner is the last one left standing.
* MeteorMove: [[spoiler: The "Divine Northern Fist: Fantastic Piledriver", which is a fusion of Megas, Coop's love of pro wrestling, and Reimu's power-set. The attack is devastating enough that it all but annihilates the Garden of the Sun.]]
* MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds: Coop delivering a video game system to Gensokyo was well-intentioned, but according to Eirin, an overemphasis on technology would lead to magic's decline and Gensokyo's eventual cessation. Not that Kaguya cares, mind you.
* MirrorMatch: Lampshaded by Yuyuko. During the events of ''Immaterial and Missing Power'', she and Yukari apparently had duels against "mirror images" of themselves. Looking back at those, Yuyuko stated that she enjoyed herself and that if she didn't know better, she'd say that her opponent was stealing her battle style.
* MrExposition: By Yukari's own admission, she's employed as this.
* NarratorAllAlong: It's eventually revealed during the final scene that [[spoiler:Yukari was telling the story to Renko Usami]] at an undisclosed point in time.
* NightmareSequence: [[spoiler:Maribel goes through this while suffering from a fever. Among the things she sees are Megas both dealing and receiving fury; the numerous threats it would face, including the Glorft and Evil Coop; and the fallout of Megas's final destruction, which includes Yuyuko being KilledOffForReal and Gensokyo's CessationOfExistence brought on by the Glorft invasion.]]
* NoisyRobots: The amount of noise Megas makes when it walks around, flies or fires is one of the signs that [[spoiler: Coop wasn't entirely to blame for the sunflowers being damaged]].
* NoodleImplements: What purpose would some wood planks, duct tape, an empty ice cream bucket, a half-full hairspray can, a jackalope plush doll, flour, marbles, a window fan and a trumpet serve in trying to wake up Yukari? No one knows but Yuyuko, and she's not telling.
* NotAllowedToGrowUp: Discussed. Marisa claims that she’s both a child at heart and a woman of at least 20 years. When asked why she still looked like an adolescent, her response is that both she and Reimu become younger whenever an incident is in progress.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Patchouli may dislike Coop and outright ''hate'' Megas, but even she's not immune to the allure of a pizza wrapped around a ham. [[spoiler: The end of the Extra Stage suggests that she's given in to that particular temptation.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: As soon as Yukari hears that Coop and Megas are back in Gensokyo, her face pales and she ''immediately'' sets out to see for herself.
* OddFriendship: There are signs of this developing between Reisen and Kiva. Also doubles as an InterspeciesFriendship.
* PassThePopcorn: While most of the second fight’s on-lookers are watching the combatants cautiously or anxiously, Yuyuko’s treating the whole thing like a night at the theater.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Yuuka. Suika, who is herself powerful enough to rip apart mountains barehanded, outright calls her "The Destructor".
* ThePrankster: Tewi Inaba, though she admits later that she had no idea what Jamie was talking about when he asked for her telephone number.
* RageBreakingPoint: The events of the main story and everything she's dreamed about since then have left Patchouli with a deep distrust and fear of Coop and his antics. When she wins the below game (while actively trying to ''lose''), her anger quickly builds up; when Reimu essentially tells her to suck it up and deal with it, she snaps and '''throws''' Reimu at Megas in her stead.
* RedBaron: Megas has become known as "The Destructive Sentinel" by the time the Stage takes place.
* RedHerring: When Megas returns to Gensokyo by way of Yuyuko's domain, the reader is led to believe that it destroyed part of Hakugyokurou's cherry blossom garden. [[spoiler: It's not until much later when Yuyuko confirms that what it ''really'' damaged was the Saigyou Ayakashi.]]
* RefugeInAudacity: During the aforementioned "Pass the Popcorn" moment, Yukari catches Yuyuko eating a Philly cheesesteak and asks what she was snacking on. Yuyuko's response? To devour the rest of the cheesesteak on the spot ''and flat-out lie to Yukari's face that she never had one.''
--> '''Yuyuko:''' What Philly cheesesteak? I don't see any. You must be imagining things, Yukari.
--> '''Yukari:''' I saw it right there in your hands.
--> '''Yuyuko:''' Saw what?
--> '''Yukari:''' The food.
--> '''Yuyuko:''' But there ''isn't'' any food in my hands. That's crazy talk.
--> '''Yukari:''' Yuyuko, I specifically saw you devour a Philly cheesesteak. Why are you so intent on telling me you didn't?
--> '''Yuyuko:''' If you saw me eat it, why are you asking me about it?
* RegionalRedecoration: [[spoiler: The Garden of the Sun's destruction leaves an enormous crater at the impact point, though it likely wouldn't stop Yuuka from restoring the location to its former glory later.]]
* RockPaperScissors: Used at one point to decide who would serve as an escort for Coop and his friends. Marisa manages to introduce dynamite into the lineup (beats paper and rock, loses to scissors), and all five participants actively use it to try and eke out a victory (except Patchouli, who was roped into it despite her protests, and she actively tries to lose). In the end, Patchouli wins completely by accident, leading to the RageBreakingPoint above culminating in, again, Patchouli essentially ''grabbing Reimu and hurling the shrine maiden into Megas in her place.''
* RunningGag:
** Some of the source material's gags are continued in some way or another.
** Jamie getting rejected by ''almost'' every girl he meets in Gensokyo.
** Marisa obsessing over riding in Megas, be it in reality or in others' imaginations.
* SaveThisPersonSaveTheWorld: [[spoiler: Or "Save This Giant Robot Car", at least. Yukari believes that Gensokyo's existence is tied to Megas surviving long enough to put an end to the Glorft invasion in the future, and up until the present day she kept an eye on it just in case.]]
* SayMyName: ''"KIII-RIII-SAAA-MEEEEEE!"'' Doubles as TheScream.
* SensingYouAreOutmatched: After Yuuka unleashes her ''Lotus Land Story'' patterns, Megas's crew decide to finish their tasks ''another'' day when things had settled down. Yuuka doesn't let them leave, however, and after she presses Coop's Berserk Button he decides to finish the fight anyway.
* SillyReasonForWar: The Mêlée à Trois between the three magicians, Reisen and Reimu was because... of a drawn-out Seinfeldian Conversation. Lampshaded by Reimu to Kiva, pointing out that fights in Gensokyo have started for far less.
* SoreLoser: Yuuka was sorely tempted to rampage after losing to Coop, never mind the fact that doing so would mean an "extermination" of the permanent variety courtesy of Reimu. It's only after receiving some sunflower seeds and learning the truth about the fight's trigger that she calms down enough to leave quietly.
* SpinningPiledriver: See "Meteor Move" above. [[spoiler: Megas initiates the move from high enough up that Yuuka actually passes out from the g-forces well before contact with the ground.]]
* StraightManAndWiseGuy: Yukari and Yuyuko, respectively.
* ATasteOfDefeat: Even after being scaled up, Yuuka's experience, power, and combat ability weren't ''quite'' enough for her to outmatch Megas, and it was implied that she wasn't holding back like she was back in ''LLS''. It takes a little bit before she's able to get over it.
* ThatCameOutWrong: Reisen, after being warned by those with her not to get between them and get involved in their squabbling, proclaims that "I don't need to catch your eyes to be a distraction". She realizes her mistake too late, and the aforementioned Seinfeldian Conversation takes another turn.
* {{Touche}}: During the fight, Yuuka tries to give a speech on how badly Coop and Megas are going to lose at her hands. Kiva interrupts and points out that Coop, who was busy snacking in the interim, didn't really care for her threats. Yuuka concedes the point.
* TroubleEntendre: How Yuyuko clues Yukari in on Megas's return, eluding to Coop's love of wrestling and the confusion surrounding the mech's name by claiming he got in thanks to a "shining wizard".
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Happens to Yuuka repeatedly the longer her fight drags on.
--> '''Yuuka:''' (thinking) ''Surprises upon surprises, tricks upon tricks. Is there no end to this machine's tenacity?''
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: In Goat's cameo, he seems perturbed at first by the giant portal in his junkyard... then sees Megas on the other side, upon which he just nods and goes about his business. Reimu mentally lampshades this.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler: Rumia. This being one of the more idiotic youkai in Gensokyo, she doesn't know enough to keep from getting near Megas, and even then she was smelling her food of choice close by. When Megas turns to leave the area it accidentally kicks her into the Garden of the Sun, setting the fight with Yuuka into motion.]]
* VictoryPose: Megas swings both hands into the air as a glimmer of light flares across its torso, complete with an audible ''"Schwing!"''
* VillainTeleportation: Reimu notes that Yuuka likes to utilize short-range teleportation to keep her enemies off-balance, which is how she keeps Megas from fleeing mid-battle.
* WaveMotionGun:
** Megas's [[Anime/SpaceRunawayIdeon Idiot Gun.]] This being Megas, it doesn't work as advertised. See "Tempting Fate" above.
** When Yuuka is enlarged by Marisa's size-changing powder, her Double Spark becomes large enough to be clearly seen from space.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler: Addressed by Yukari. Antagonists that Coop had previously fought with but threatened to resurface, only to never be seen again past their debut episode, were dealt with by her in some way. The last remaining fragment of the REGIS Mk. V, for example, was given to Suika to be crushed within one of her black holes.]]
* YouAreWhatYouHate: Evidence is scattered throughout the Extra Stage that Patchouli is more like Coop than she thinks. Among other things she has some familiarity with video games and associated terminology, such as character tiers (thanks to her dreams), and she has to resist the urge to request a pizza-wrapped ham[[labelnote:*]]From the episode "Department of Megas Violations"[[/labelnote]] from the Mansion's kitchen. All this is despite the fact that she developed a hefty loathing for Coop, his lifestyle and his stupidity by the time they get brought up.
