* The first mission of ''VideoGame/AceCombatXSkiesOfDeception'' has some Leasath chair forcers rain bombs on a defenceless city [[ForTheEvulz just because they could spare the ordnance]], showing that these aren't quite the MyCountryRightOrWrong {{Punch Clock Villain}}s of other titles in the series.
* ''VideoGame/AceCombat7SkiesUnknown''
** The mission ''444'', is an establishing character moment for the ''entire Spare Squadron''. It starts off with Champ forcing a take-off after cutting of Tabloid and telling the Air Traffic Control to ‘Go to hell’ after they called him out on it. Count tries to assume command of the squadron, but nobody listens to him, High Roller sets up a betting pool on who's going to live and who's going to die, Full Band chooses to SpeakIllOfTheDead when mentioning how Trigger got transferred over to the Spare Squadron by shooting a missile in between old [[spoiler:Harling’s]] eyes, and last but not least, AWACS Bandog sends out a warning to the squadron, ‘This is the penal unit. [[ImpliedDeathThreat I decide when you die]].’ When the mission is over, [[TheNeidermeyer Colonel [=McKinsey=]]] throws everyone into solitary for disobeying his orders to ''not'' fire on the enemy bombers until he gave the go-ahead. It all goes to show how dysfunctional the Spare Squadron is.
** In the mission ''Fleet Destruction'', Trigger and Count get transferred over to the Long Range Strategic Strike Group, and their new AWACS Long Caster tells them that [[BigEater he’s going to eat while he works]] because his judgement goes fuzzy whenever he gets too hungry.
* In ''VideoGame/AlanWake'', [[KnightTemplar Agent Nightingale]]'s first appearance shows him trying to shoot Alan Wake, completely ignoring the risk of hitting the innocent bystander who was standing right next to Alan.
* ''VideoGame/AssassinsCreedRogue:'' Louis-Joseph Gaultier de la Vérendrye is introduced muttering angrily in French, insulting and attacking the protagonist, and declaring that as an Assassin, he (and according to him, every other Assassin) must obey their mentor unquestioningly, despite their cause supposedly being "freedom". It serves a double purpose here since it establishes that Gaultier is [[FrenchJerk a dick]], and how the other Assassins in this game behave as a whole, and why someone might take issue with them.
* ''VideoGame/BaldursGate''
** The opening cinematic of the first game acts as an establishing character moment for [[BigBad Sarevok]], in spite of being cryptic at the time. He's shown chasing down a terrified man -- a warrior himself, but helpless against him. He knocks down a door effortlessly, looms menacingly, speaks of ThereCanBeOnlyOne, and mercilessly kills the man while holding him in a NeckLift before tossing the body away. That tells a lot about him: big, menacing, literally[[note]]in game mechanics terms[[/note]] as strong as an ogre, ruthlessly evil, and motivated by something that involves killing all the others (whatever they may be).
** Irenicus from the second game is first seen torturing the helpless protagonist for the purposes of some research, completely indifferent to their suffering. The whole initial dungeon continues with this theme, and it's accompanied by more than one scene showing his utterly overwhelming magical power as he repels attackers.
* ''VideoGame/BaldursGateIII''
** You first meet Lae'zel and Shadowheart on the mind flayers' ship. Lae'zel prepares to kill you, believing you to be a mind flayer thrall, then after she finds out you're not a thrall, essentially recruits you to help her kill the mind flayers on the ship, [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy as is githyanki tradition]]. Shadowheart, meanwhile, is trapped in a pod and, while thankful for your support, is quite cagey around you due to the nature of her mission and her worship of [[GodOfEvil Shar]] -- especially if you have Lae'zel with you, since githyanki and Sharrans have a lot of bad blood.
** You meet Astarion shortly after escaping from the nautiloid ship. He establishes himself as not very trusting when he points your attention towards an intellect devourer...only for it to turn out to be a boar, after which he attempts to ambush you, also thinking you a thrall before realizing you're both in the same boat.
** Gale is found stuck in a rock, having opened a portal into it to escape a painful death from falling out of the nautiloid, establishing his mastery of magic early on.
** Wyll first appears during the goblins' attempted attack on the druids' grove, fending off the invaders as befitting the folk hero known as the Blade of Frontiers. He is later seen in the grove sparring with one of the young refugees.
** Karlach is first seen in standing in a river, trying to cool herself off as her Infernal Engine overheats. If you have Wyll with you, the animosity between the two becomes apparent and, if you want to recruit Karlach, must needs be dispelled.
* ''VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}}'':
** Aside from the ActionPrologue, Bayonetta is first seen as a nun praying at a funeral. A few angels arrive and she jumps towards them, appearing to greet them. But instead, she starts killing them in over-the-top and dominatrix-esque ways, all while an upbeat combat theme plays. Then her habit gets ripped in suggestive spots, but instead of getting embarrassed, she takes the whole thing off and makes a new suit out of her hair.
** The first thing Enzo is seen doing is literally pissing on a grave, establishing him as a {{jerkass}}. The crazy things that happen to him later on in the scene, up to and including the NearMissGroinAttack in the graveyard and Bayonetta's wrecking of his car during the battle with the angels, establish him as the series' resident ButtMonkey and [[TheChewToy Chew Toy]].
** The Prologue hints at how powerful Rodin is by having him come out of a coffin in slow-motion while one of his eyes glows behind his shades, scaring angels by yelling at them, and completely ignoring the coffin's lid falling on his head.
* Joey Drew manages to have one in Chapter 1 of ''VideoGame/BendyAndTheInkMachine'' despite having no appearances or lines there: Wally Franks, the janitor, complains about Joey taking people's personal belongings for some ritual and being secretive about what the Ink Machine's purpose is. This gives a good idea of how he treated his workers as well as his awful business sense.
* ''VideoGame/TheBindingOfIsaac'' introduces Isaac's mom as a religious woman who watches Christian broadcasts on TV. When a voice from above tells her her son is corrupted by sin and needs to be saved, she proceeds to remove "all that is evil" from Isaac's life--by taking away all his toys and all his clothes. And then in response to the voice telling him that he needs to be cut off from all that is evil in this world, she locks Isaac in his room. By the time the voice tells her that Isaac needs to die in order to prove her devotion to God, it's pretty clear that his mom is abusive and--at least in Isaac's mind--completely insane.
* ''VideoGame/BlazBlue'':
** [[BigBad Yuuki Terumi]] perfectly establishes what kind of inhumane bastard he is when he, in [[AntiHero Ragna]]'s story mode's initial flashback, just seconds after he's {{Mind Rape}}s Jin into cutting off Ragna's right arm, dedicates a couple of minutes to [[CardCarryingVillain revelling in the moment]] while he [[LargeHam loudly]] and [[BreakThemByTalking brutally]] [[{{Troll}} mocks, taunts, ridicules]] [[AxCrazy and]] [[LaughingMad maniacally]] [[EvilLaugh laughs]] at Ragna who lies screaming and writhing in pain on the ground. For first-timers, this also counts as the moment Terumi crosses the MoralEventHorizon. For Terumi, however, [[ButForMeItWasTuesday it might as well be Tuesday.]]
** Same goes with his co-conspirator Relius Clover. When he was only mentioned by Carl in ''Calamity Trigger'', all we know is that 'he lacked compassion'. Come his first appearance in ''Continuum Shift'', he shows what that really means: Callously turning Carl's sister ''and'' mother into automatons only [[ForScience for advancement of science]] without even care, and eventually hammered home in his own story in ''Continuum Shift Extend'': He just sees people as things. From that point on, Relius is more known as both MadScientist extraordinary, and [[AbusiveParents the worst father ever]].
** [[HandsomeLech Kagura Mutsuki]] gets a good example in ''Chronophantasma'', where heroines Noel and Makoto walk up to meet him in his office, to pass an infuriated woman in the hallway shouting about how he's a complete pervert. They walk in and he spends the whole conversation between casually flirting with both of them, and complaining about how Kokonoe turned his bachelor pad into an elevator.
* ''VideoGame/Borderlands2'' has a couple of good ones:
** The four default character's abilities and general behaviour are established in the intro together with Handsome Jack's role as villain and being a troll.
** For those who skipped the intro, Jack first introduces himself with this lovely speech over Echo, which establishes him as an arrogant asshole right out of the gate.
--->''Hey, kiddo. Jack here, President of Hyperion. Lemme explain how things work here: Vault Hunter shows up. Vault Hunter looks for the new Vault. Vault Hunter gets killed. By me. You seeing the problem here? You’re still alive. So, if you could just do me a favor and off yourself, that’d be great. Thanks, pumpkin."
*** An early quest establishes just how much of an asshole and a sociopath Jack is when he hijacks a train full of refugees, casually makes jokes about their leader's face, then feigns remorse after she explains her backstory, just before shooting her in the head, laughing about how BloodyHilarious her death was, and ordering his [[TheDragon Dragon]] Wilhelm to kill everyone else on the train.
** Marcus Kincaid shooting a guy in the knee when he asks for a refund on a defective gun Markus sold him.
---> '''Marcus:''' Looks like it works to me!
** Doctor Zed jams a large needle into a bound-down patient while remarking that it won't hurt.
** Claptrap greeting you by giving you an ECHO that he [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial totally didn't just loot from a dead body]].
** Tiny Tina is introduced singing a (heavily modified) nursery rhyme before blowing up a bandit with a stick of dynamite.
** Scooter shows up as an obvious ManChild with a strong Southern-Appalachian accent, poor grammar, and a ''very'' unconventional understanding of Hyperion ("I heard all of you are robots, and you eat metal out of the garbage, and stuff") after mistaking the Vault Hunters for Handsome Jack's assassins. Yet, at the same time, he also is unquestionably brave and loyal to the Crimson Raiders, promising to give Hyperion a fight if they're there to kill him. It also neatly explains his comic-relief nature.
** Sir Hammerlock first appears from his hut on Liar's Berg marching out in perfect lockstep and saluting the Vault Hunters. Between that, his British accent (and perfect grammar, in stark contrast to many others in the game), his GreatWhiteHunter outfit, and a certain early-1900s flair, this instantly gives away his QuintessentialBritishGentleman [[GentlemanAdventurer Adventurer]] nature.
* ''VideoGame/BreathOfFireIV'' starts somewhat innocuously, but firmly establishes the otherwise taciturn Ryu as a hero by having him jump off a cliff without hesitation to rescue Nina, a girl he just met, after she falls. It also establishes him as a bit naive when he passes her on the way down because, hey, her wings aren't just for show, causing him to FaceFault.
* In ''VideoGame/CallOfDutyGhosts'' the villains are first shown using a KillSat on civilian targets. If that doesn't rub their villainy in enough, in the first level their mooks are shown executing civilians.
* The opening cutscene of ''VideoGame/CapellasPromise'' deliberately averts FreudianExcuse for Prince Zanara, who as a child is shown trying to stitch together a fish and a frog, and then declaring that he wants to [[AGodAmI become a god]] in order to give and take away life as he pleases.
* Some of the generals in ''VideoGame/CommandAndConquerGenerals Zero Hour'' show off their specialization.
** Gen. Granger buzzes your base with fleets of aircraft.
** Gen. Alexander and General Townes both start off by drawing an actual line in the sand with a particle cannon.
** Gen. Tao destroys one mechanized unit with a [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill nuclear missile]].
** Gen. Kassad starts off by suddenly attacking an outpost from nowhere.
* [[NameOfCain Kane]] of the ''VideoGame/CommandAndConquerTiberianSeries'' has truly memorable moments:
** In ''[[VideoGame/CommandAndConquerTiberianDawn Tiberian Dawn]]'', in the middle of you getting a dubious and quite possibly suicidal mission briefing from [[SmugSnake Seth]] (who comments that "Power shifts quickly in the Brotherhood", while glancing over his shoulder at every sound) Kane's hand appears in the corner of the screen holding a pistol, which he uses to blow Seth's brains out. Then he comments that "Yes, power shifts more quickly than some people think....", issues the player less-suicidal orders, then [[AffablyEvil congratulates the player on his promotion]].
** On the GDI side of the same game, Kane's introduction involves the player getting a series of routine reports from various news agencies on various topics, and in the middle of the reports Kane suddenly hacks into his data stream, tells the player that their EVA unit cannot help them, that their army is penniless and emasculated, that they are doomed to failure, and that ''he knows where you live'' and implies he has assassins on the way to kill you. [[AffablyEvil Then he bids you a good day]].
*** In addition to showcasing his personality, it also started a habit of his for GDI campaigns: introducing himself by hacking a communication system to gloat. He does it three times out of four.
** In ''[[VideoGame/CommandAndConquerTiberianSun Tiberian Sun]]'', Kane's first appearance in the Nod campaign occurs when Anton Slavik has captured General Hassan and is holding him on a massive stage with a huge screen behind him. Slavik starts chanting "In the name of Kane!" and the crowd responds with "Kane lives in death!" On the third repetition, the screen erupts to life with Kane's face and he shouts [[LargeHam "KANE LIVES!"]] Then he turns to Hassan and reminds him "Rule of thumb, Hassan: you can't kill the Messiah."
** In ''[[VideoGame/CommandAndConquerTiberiumWars Tiberium Wars]]'', Kane's first appearance on the Nod side has him stepping out of the mists in a chapel-like room and greet the new commander like a combination of proud father-figure and fiery holy man. On the GDI side, the player is hit by images showing the orbital command space station being nuked, multiple GDI regions where bombers are attacking, warnings of incoming invading forces, and finally Kane hacking the global news network to issue his taunting declaration of war.
** From ''Tiberian Sun'', CABAL is established not just as the Nod counterpart to EVA, but also as a self-aware and downright ''malevolent'' AI with its first few lines of dialogue:
--->'''CABAL''': A division of Hassan's elite guard is closing in on our position. The probability of a favourable outcome can be increased if we can return to your main base and engage the enemy as we move.\
'''Slavik''': Define "favourable outcome", CABAL.\
'''CABAL''': ''They all '''die'''''.
* In ''VideoGame/Conception2ChildrenOfTheSevenStars'', Chlotz is introduced risking his life to protect a classmate, even though both are unarmed, and refusing to give up despite injury...Then, once the danger is over, he makes a perverted joke about her. [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Yeah]].
* ''VideoGame/{{Crysis}} 2'''s {{Troperiffic}} [[BatmanColdOpen opening cinematic]], "Second Chance," opens with a SuperSoldier flinging himself out of a skyscraper [[DodgeTheBullet just ahead of an incoming rocket]] and [[ThreePointLanding landing]] [[MadeOfIron unscathed]]. He then ambushes an enemy soldier, takes his rifle, shoots another soldier with it before he can react, [[SuperSpeed evades]] an A-10 [[DeathFromAbove napalm airstrike]], turns [[InvisibilityCloak invisible]], {{neck lift}}s a third soldier, [[DestinationDefenestration hurls him out a window]], follows him down, and uses his Mk.60 to disable an AwesomePersonnelCarrier while [[ImmuneToBullets shrugging off]] its machine gun fire. His next step is to [[InASingleBound fling]] himself in SlowMotion onto the APC, trigger his SuperStrength, and [[RemovableTurretGun rip]] its .50 caliber machine gun right off its mount. By the time he's used it to [[ShortLivedAerialEscape shoot down]] the helicopter that shot that first rocket at him, it's abundantly clear that a well-used [[PowerArmor Nanosuit 2]] is a force to be reckoned with. This entire sequence takes two minutes, with Music/HansZimmer's [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic "Insertion"]] blaring in the background the whole time.
* ''VideoGame/DarkSoulsI'':
** You, the Chosen Undead, are introduced languishing in a cell in your Hollowed out form, [[JumpedAtTheCall immediately taking your opportunity to escape and survive when it comes to you.]]
** The Great Grey Wolf Sif appears guarding over his companion's old sword and preparing to kill you for attempting to even touch it.
** In the main game, Knight Artorias is a legendary figure who you never actually see, but you hear tales of how he descended into the Abyss to stop the darkness in New Londo and failed, becoming corrupted. His item descriptions describe his great strength and prowess with a greatsword. [[OhCrap Cue the intro to his boss fight in the DLC, where he drops down on an undead and impales it, before hurling it at you with a roar.]]
** While he has no introduction cutscene, 9 times out of 10 [[spoiler: Lord Gwyn's]] first attack will be a jumping, fiery slash that sets the tone for the entire fight, and gives you a good idea of how fast and strong he is.
* The first proper scene in ''VideoGame/DeadlyPremonition'' has Francis York Morgan driving alone to the location of the newest case, in the rain, smoking, looking at evidence on his laptop, and talking on the phone all at the same time. And in his side of the conversation, he's arguing that a couple's seemingly abusive relationship is entirely consensual and healthy. Then it turns out the couple he's talking about are WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry.
* In ''VideoGame/DeadSpace'', Isaac Clarke is quickly established as a non-action engineer who's only on the Ishimura mission to find his girlfriend. His ActionSurvivor tendencies don't get established until later on.
** A minor version happens in ''VideoGame/DeadSpace2'', considering we've already got Isaac as a returning character, but if you didn't play it, you'll get two moments that very quickly tell you what kind of a man Isaac is. When things first go to hell, the man who's trying to rescue him gets turned into a Necromorph about six inches away from Isaac's face -- and his response is to ''headbutt it''. When he's cut loose from his straightjacket a little later, Isaac jury-rigs a surgical plasma cutter and a flashlight together into a serviceable weapon -- that can carry you through the entire game -- in about five seconds. Badass engineer cred proven, along with the assurance that his two years in the loony bin haven't slowed him down.
** In ''VideoGame/DeadSpace3'', Norton's first action was to have Carver take Isaac hostage and proceed to force him to rescue Ellie. He relies on Isaac's good nature and love for Ellie to do it. [[spoiler: Of course, he "forgets" to mention he is dating Ellie]].
* ''VideoGame/{{Deltarune}}'', [[DigitalAbomination Spamton G. Spamton]] introduces himself by bursting out of a garbage bin, [[IncomingHam loudly]] announcing his name before he even ''notices'' the PlayerCharacter. When he does, he immediately tries to get you to get into a deal with him, and accuses you of being [[PsychologicalProjection abandoned by your friends, losing business and being forced to live in a garbage can]] before ''punching the can in a rage'', causing [[TheStoic Kris]] to back away. All of this sets him up as an [[AxCrazy unhinged]], [[AmbitionIsEvil ambitious]] SnakeOilSalesman.
* ''VideoGame/DensetsuNoStafy3'': Starly introduces herself by hearing about the new villain causing trouble, immediately showing up before Starfy and Moe to declare that the three of them should teach him a lesson, and shoving the two into the ocean to go after him.
* In ''VideoGame/DeusExHumanRevolution'', within the first level, Adam Jensen is shown to be snarky when he's sniping at Pritchard while they're in the elevator and quipping at Megan Reed. When things get bad, he immediately proves [[OneManArmy there's a reason he was hired as chief of security]] when he tears through a pack of corporate mercenaries and survives being beaten to a pulp and ''shot in the head''. Likewise, most of the characters that will prove to be significant get minor establishing moments in the first ten minutes.
* ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry1'': The first cutscene does a good job of introducing Dante and Trish. She barges into his shop while riding a motorcycle, beats him up, impales him and electrocutes him. Dante's response? He jokes to the woman who drove a motorcycle through his front door, points a sword when she looks like she can be hostile but doesn't use it, laughs off being impaled and electrocuted, sends the same motorcycle flying with bullets, and calmly pulls the sword out of his chest.
* ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry3DantesAwakening'':
** This game manages another one for the younger Dante in its first cutscene, just before the fighting starts -- with multiple demons' scythes shoved through his torso and one of his handguns in easy reach... Dante grabs the slice of pizza right next to said handgun instead, before moving away from it to turn on the jukebox. He's ''that'' unconcerned about the demons and the various scythe blades in his body.
** Vergil's very first appearance has him silence Arkham while he's [[EvilIsHammy hamming it up]] about the Temen-ni-gru, showing his [[TheStoic serious nature]] and how much he just gets straight to the point. Right after, when the Hell Vanguard that Dante previously likely had trouble with shows up on the top of the tower, Vergil easily kills it with just one strike [[OffhandBackhand without even looking at it coming from behind him]], showing how big the initial gap in power is between Dante and Vergil that will become even more apparent [[HopelessBossFight when they cross paths properly later]].
* ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry4'': The opening intro pretty much establishes most of Nero's character. While he's sprinting through the streets to reach the opera house where Kyrie is singing at, he encounters a pack of Scarecrows blocking his way. With Red Queen [[AllThereInTheManual being repaired]], Nero rips the blade off of one Scarecrow and proceeds to go to town on them even with his right arm in a sling. His slightly frustrated expression indicates some lack of patience, and the action scene also shows that he [[GoodIsNotNice fights much more aggressively]] compared to Dante and doesn't use as much flair as Dante does. After reaching the opera house, Kyrie turns to see him sitting at his designated spot when her performance ended, and Nero gives her a [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold genuine smile]] that she happily returns.
* ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry5'': Nico establishes herself as one hell of a BadassDriver during the opening sequence when demons are attacking the city by using her van as a weapon to ram them. When a demon tries to crawl through the driver-side window, Nico doesn't even turn her head and [[https://youtu.be/BxJl9YTOn90?t=14m26s puts her cigarette out on its face]]. Later on, after Nico deliberately sends the van flipping through the air after crashing into several cars and demons, she [[https://youtu.be/BxJl9YTOn90?t=15m23s calmly moves her head]] enough to catch a cigarette with just her mouth while Nero's outside shooting demons.
* In ''VideoGame/DiscoElysium'', your player character starts the game being insulted by his Ancient Lizard Brain, a growling Cockney who begs him to remain in a state of non-existence where there are no responsibilities, no feelings, and no women who are your ex. The player wakes up, anyway, lying face down on the floor in a hotel room that has been trashed, with a ghastly colourful necktie hanging from the ceiling fan above his head in a [[BungledSuicide noose-like]] [[EroticAsphyxiation fashion]], and a pair of [[DiscoDan mustard yellow flares]] laid out on the floor behind him, and goes about gathering his clothes. On the way downstairs he bumps into a beautiful woman in a silver disco jumpsuit, who he can hit on ineptly, before feeling an intense craving for the stubs in the ashtray. Going downstairs, the rude cafeteria manager informs him he owes a huge bill to cover his trashed room, to which the player may choose to have an emotional breakdown, attempt to arrest him, or run as fast as they can out of the door before turning around, flipping the bird with both fingers, and yelling "Fuck you, asshole!"...right before crashing into a woman sitting in a wheelchair while doing so.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea|HourOfDarkness}}'', Flonne's introduction:
-->[[TheDitz "Nice to meet'cha, I'm an assassin! ...Oops, I wasn't supposed to tell you that."]]
** The intro sequence of ''VideoGame/Disgaea5'' tells us what you need to know about the two leads -- [[{{Ojou}} Seraphina]] [[TheBeautifulElite would rather enjoy herself]] [[UpperClassTwit than understand what fighting the Lost amounts to]], and Killia [[BigEater loves to enjoy a good bowl of curry]] [[CurbStompBattle before wrecking his enemies' shit]].
* ''VideoGame/DMCDevilMayCry'': Mundus's first scene has him calmly and casually threatening the President with public humiliation, to which he complies over the phone. That alone displays his vast power over the world as well as the monster he is under his veneer of sophistication.
* ''Franchise/{{Doom}}'':
** ''VideoGame/Doom2016'' has several for the Doom Slayer:
*** Mere seconds after waking up and finding himself surrounded by zombies, the Doomguy breaks free of the manacles holding him, backhands the first one to get near him hard enough to draw blood, then grabs and smashes its head into the slab/operating table he's on hard enough to [[YourHeadASplode turn it into a bloody smear]], just before taking up a pistol to kill the rest. Even if you've never played any of the previous games, you'll know instantly why he's one of the iconic badasses of FPS.
*** When Doomguy reclaims the Praetor Suit, when Samuel attempts to greet him and tell him that they may be able to work together, he throws the monitor into the wall. And when he does so again in the elevator, stating that what they were doing was for all mankind, Doomguy takes a very deliberate glance at the mutilated corpse at his feet (as if to say "tell that to ''him'', you son of a bitch") before ''smashing the speaker in'', clearly having had more than enough of all of this.
** ''VideoGame/DoomEternal'':
*** In the very first level, "Hell on Earth", Doomguy, after ripping-and-tearing his way through a host of demons on the Hell Barge he's on, reaches Deag Nilox, the first of the Hell Priests he's after, kicks down his door, and wastes no time in seizing him by the throat, showing him a Sentinel coin when he tells him that his soul is guarded, and then calmly and ruthlessly ''ripping his head off''. When he catches up to the other two Hell Priests, he silences their talk about how no one can pass through the gate by [[DecapitationPresentation throwing Nilox's head at their feet]], horrifying and intimidating them, and then, after listening to them talk smack about how he won't save the people of Earth from their judgement, he turns around and [[DramaticGunCock pumps his shotgun]], prompting the two Hell Priests to [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere GTFO.]]
*** Although it happens halfway through the actual game, this moment was chosen for the trailer, and for good reason. Doomguy calmly marches through the demon-besieged Phobos base, paying no heed to the scattering civilians or the frantic shouts through intercoms. He has nowhere to hurry -- after all, the execution will not start without the headsman. Upon seeing an employee with a keycard around his neck, he grabs the keycard and drags it to the reader without bothering to take it off the poor man. Then he passes by a couple guards, plucks a plasmagun from one of them as if taking a toy from a child, despite the guard's weak protests, and finally ''gets to work''.
* ''Franchise/DragonAge'':
** ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins'' does this with...well, everyone. Aside from those characters who are more than they appear to be in their first scene, what you see is what you get.
*** In the various ''Origins'', Duncan appears to be almost preternaturally self-possessed, afraid of nothing, and able to make people feel either threatened or comfortable, as he chooses, with nothing more than polite small talk.
*** Alistair's first appearance has him honestly trying to fulfill his duties as a messenger and quickly falling back on snark in response to the hostility of the mage he's talking to.
*** A gracefully-aged older woman stands apart from her fellow mages, watching a Chantry sister bless some soldiers in preparation for the upcoming battle. When you speak to her, she asks you gently probing questions to determine how much you really know about what's going on and offers advice to fill in the gaps. Later, you find she survived the slaughter: when you meet her then she's just singlehandedly killed a demon to protect some of her fellow mages and a group of children. Paraphrased: "Oh hey, it's you, nice to see you again, now step away from the kids or I will end you!"
*** Morrigan appears mysteriously, from nowhere, questioning your motives and deflecting the questions you set her in return or responding positively when you are polite to her.
*** A Chantry sister tries to talk down two sides about to fight, and when that fails immediately pulls out two knives and starts cutting her way through the people who oppose her. Oh, and hi, my name's Leliana, and don't worry about the blood, I know from experience that'll come right out!
*** A huge, powerful man sits in a cage, looking for all the world like he's strong enough to bend the bars and escape...but he doesn't. Instead, he sits, chanting softly to himself in an unknown language, and when you approach, does not tell you to go away but merely that he is not there for anyone else's entertainment, so he is not there for yours either. He responds with polite but grateful surprise to courtesy and answers freely (almost) any question you ask him. He tells you he is Sten...which, you learn later, is not even his name, but his rank. And he seems almost eager, when he learns you are a Grey Warden, to enter your service to fight the Blight.
*** Zevran ambushes you and tries to kill you; when that fails, he anticipates that you'll want to interrogate him and cheerfully volunteers to save you the trouble by spilling every bit of relevant information you might want to know and a few you probably don't, and shamelessly hitting on you in the process.
*** Oghren is first seen in the Diamond Quarter, all but picking a fight with a government official due to his argument that someone needs to go look for Branka, his wife. He tries cajoling, threats, even reason, but all are shot down, leading him to trudge back to Tapster's Tavern, where you find he has already begun drowning his sorrows, assuming they aren't gently bobbing facedown in an ocean of alcohol already.
*** Your own character gets several choices for dialogue (and actions) in the Origins that can set up how you want to play them, from killing the humans in your territory to politely doing as your father tells you to do to flirting with your cousin to snarking with your cousin that she doesn't care what's going on, she just wants [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl the excuse to drink]].
*** In the ''Awakening'' expansion, your first minute with Anders tells you three things: he's a powerful mage, he has a really weird sense of humor, and he ''hates'' Templars.
** ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' does the same thing for many of its primary characters.
*** Varric gets two early on. In his first actual appearance in the game, he proves to be a storyteller who loves to over-exaggerate everything to make the stories more interesting, even while being interrogated by the Chantry's equivalent of the Inquisition. Later on, when Hawke first meets him (chronologically, ten years before the interrogation) he spots a pickpocket, pins him to the wall with his crossbow, berates the pickpocket for his lack of skill, and returns Hawke's money, before making a business proposition, establishing his role as a deadly marksman and cunning rogue/businessman. ''Mark of the Assassin'' later confirms Hawke's suspicion that he was waiting there specifically to run into them, hoping to run into them before Bartrand.
*** The first scene with Anders shows him healing a sick person, then taken over by Vengeance when Hawke enters, perceiving him/her as a potential threat, establishing the duality and inhumanity (but also kindness) of his nature. Anders also gets an indirect one before he's introduced, with many of the Ferelden Refugees that he has been helping making it clear they're prepared to die to protect "The Healer" from the Templars.
*** Merrill's first scene has her sitting apart from the other Dalish, cradling something glowing and secretive, followed by sudden embarrassed babbling at encountering Hawke, establishing her status as a mysterious mage, her distance from her people, and a quirky {{Cloudcuckoolander}} all at once.
*** Isabela's introduction involves [[BarBrawl smashing some faces in the Hanged Man]] - never once does she seem intimidated by her foes, though they outnumber her three-to-one, going so far as to talk seductively to keep one off his guard before kicking the crap out of them. When they're gone, she goes back to her drink without a qualm. This also serves as a CallBack to her similar introduction in ''Origins'', where she fought off three men who accused her of cheating at cards, before introducing herself to the Warden.
*** Fenris' first scene involves him striding around the corner, having eliminated Tevinter bounty hunters offscreen, and shoving a glowing hand through the Tevinter captain's chest -- without leaving a mark -- before politely apologizing to Hawke for the unexpected number of hunters. Mysterious supernatural warrior cred ''established''.
*** Aveline is introduced by knocking a darkspawn off her husband, beating it with her bare hands, and cutting off its head with a sword wielded like a paper slicer. Then she helps her husband to his feet.
*** Sebastian's first moments involve him placing a bounty on the head of the mercenaries who killed his family while arguing with the Grand Cleric about the need for justice. When she pulls down the bounty posting, he pins it back up with an arrow fired from his bow. His second comes when Hawke later learns from the Grand Cleric that Sebastian is not only a [[SpareToTheThrone Prince]], but a ''[[BadassPreacher Priest]]''.
*** Hawke's various personalities get introduced during Varric's prologue depending on dialogue choices. Paragon!Hawke quickly establishes themselves as a born leader, Aggresive!Hawke takes the role of a vicious BloodKnight, while the middle choice, Snarky!Hawke shows themselves to be a charismatic [[DeadpanSnarker snarker]].
*** Hawke's siblings, Bethany and Carver, are first introduced slaying Darkspawn, before going right back to ''arguing''. Bethany quickly shows herself to be diplomatic and introverted, while Carver is brash and argumentative.
*** The relationship between Hawke and their siblings similarly is established quickly in the Prologue. Hawke and [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling Carver]] seem to [[MiddleChildSyndrome butt heads]] constantly, while Hawke's [[BigBrotherInstinct protectiveness]] towards Bethany is shown when they immediately stand in front of her and give a DeathGlare to Ser Wesley after he identified her as an Apostate. With a Mage Hawke, this also shows that they are willing to put themselves in the line of fire to protect her.
*** From ''Mark of the Assassin'', [[GenkiGirl Tallis]] is introduced mowing through a bunch of assassins like a chainsaw, casually revealing she was the person Varric's contact was hired by, squees at Hawke and then offers them to join her on a heist to rob a vault, surrounded by traps, protected by an army of Chevaliers, in an impenetrable fortress, on a mountain, surrounded by monsters!
*** [[KnightTemplar Knight-Commander Meredith]] is first properly introduced at the end of chapter 2 by casually walking up behind a Sarebaas about to zap Hawke, [[AntiMagic nullifying the spell it was preparing]], and stabbing it; she then spends the remainder of the mission insisting on being in charge, insisting on taking the most straightforward approach to everything, and deferring only grudgingly on either point.
*** Similarly, her reaction to Mage Hawke is essentially "Yes, I know you're a Mage. I'll deal with you later, [[EnemyMine Qunari first!]]" Her willingness to overlook Hawke being an apostate in the face of the current crisis so that while authoritarian, she's still reasonable. [[spoiler: Which only highlights how paranoid and off the deep-end she becomes later]].
*** Flemeth's reintroduction has her rescue Hawke's family from the Darkspawn in her High Dragon form, transform into her new valkyrie-esque appearance, whilst walking through the fire completely unharmed. She then offers her services in getting past the Darkspawn, in exchange for Hawke delivering something for her to a group of Dalish elves outside of Kirkwall.
* ''VideoGame/DragonQuestV'': In his first appearance, [[TheDragon Ladja]] beats the Hero and Prince Harry down, forces the Hero's father to let himself be killed by holding his eight-year-old son hostage, shatters the golden globe found among the child's clothes just in case that random child is carrying the Zenithia's Golden Orb, and makes both children slaves.
* ''VideoGame/Fallout3'':
** [[GeniusBruiser Fawkes]] is first introduced by talking to [[WordOfGod him]] through a speaker. In a shocking departure from the usual Super Mutants you've encountered throughout the area, he is not only intelligent, but articulate, polite, and surprisingly friendly. After letting him out of his cell, he helps you for a while by tackling assorted enemies and helping you retrieve your mission objective, and then politely departs. His establishing character moment meets its climax later on when you find him jumping out of the side of an aircraft with a giant laser minigun, screaming various battle cries...and he's ''still'' polite to you when you talk to him.
** [[TheBully Butch Deloria]] starts showing his true colours at the player character's tenth birthday party: having missed out on cake thanks to [[RobotBuddy Andy's]] screwup, he demands that you hand over the sweetroll you were just given as a present. Rather tellingly, one easy way to get Butch angry enough to beat you up (apart from just refusing to give him the sweetroll) is to suggest he's hungry because [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas his mother]] wasted all their ration coupons [[TheAlcoholic on booze]]. Equally tellingly, [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain he's almost instantly reined in by the nearest guard.]]
** [[MeanBoss Overseer Almodovar]] gets his moment at the party as well: initially introduced as a reasonable if somewhat uptight authority figure, if you follow him upstairs to his office, you can hear him commenting that the only reason he attended in the first place was that his daughter was a friend of "[[PlayerCharacter the brat.]]" He then [[KickTheDog orders the party broken up by the guards and everyone sent back to work.]]
** Another example from the party: Andy, the prim and proper resident robot, deciding to cut the cake. [[EpicFail With a buzzsaw.]]
** At first just an [[GenkiGirl overly-cheerful]] shopkeeper, Moira Brown soon makes it clear that she's much more than that: first, she starts asking for a quote from you (the resident vault-dweller) to introduce her upcoming book on wasteland survival; in payment, she offers an armoured version of a Vault 101 suit that [[WrenchWench she modified herself]] -- and [[MoodDissonance without dropping her cheerful tone]], mentions that the client who asked for it is probably dead. Finally, she asks for a little help with her [[MadScientist experiments in wasteland survival]]...
** Assuming that the offer to blow up an inhabited settlement in exchange for a hefty payoff didn't indicate exactly what kind of person Alistair Tenpenny is, accepting the offer pretty much seals the deal: after being invited to his penthouse suite at the only luxury hotel in the entire wasteland, you find him lounging around on the balcony in a silk robe, enthusiastically watching [[spoiler: Megaton]] vanish in a nuclear fireball -- and then paying you with a ton of caps and the deeds to a suite of your own. Stick around a little longer, and it's revealed that the only reason he had the town blown up was that ''it was spoiling his view'' -- and he spends his spare time firing a sniper rifle at random into the wasteland below. Wealthy, powerful, and [[RichInDollarsPoorInSense completely and utterly batshit]].
** Introduced in the middle of a very loud argument with Rivet City's chief scientists, Dr Zimmer establishes both his ridiculously bloated ego and skewed sense of priorities by demanding that they help him track down his android creation, going so far as to dismiss Dr Li's current project as unworthy of anyone's attention. Li's current project? ''Purifying the Potomac River and providing everyone in the Capital Wasteland with safe drinking water.''
** President John Henry Eden can be heard at all hours of the day on the Enclave Radio Channel, warmheartedly sharing his opinions and plans for the rebirth of America with anyone who cares to listen. One might be tempted to think of him as a harmless crank with no real authority, or perhaps an automated broadcast by a long-dead actor... but then the Enclave attacks Project Purity in force, driving out the team and seizing complete control of the area, and suddenly those [[AffablyEvil friendly chats]] take on a much more [[KnightTemplar sinister note.]]
* In ''VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas'', from the very beginning of the game you are told about Caesar's Legion, a brutal band of slavers and raiders that aim to conquer the Mojave, and how they're some of the worst scum in the world. However, it's not until you walk in on the aftermath of the sacking of Nipton, with nearly everybody dead and a whole group of Powder Gangers (a group of bad guys you've probably fought up till now) having been outright ''crucified'', that you realize just how cruel and depraved they truly are.
** In the introduction, Benny is depicted as a classic AffablyEvil SmugSnake in a tacky suit, putting on airs that overstep the bounds of merely 'full of himself' and go straight for 'this man should be maced.' [[spoiler: No points for guessing he [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder inevitably betrays everyone he works with]], which includes [[TheStarscream his boss.]]]]
** Also in this same introductory cutscene, the Courier is shown taking two bullets in the head and being buried in a shallow grave. [[ActionSurvivor This doesn't seem]] [[MadeOfIron to slow them down]] [[TheDeterminator in the slightest.]]
** The first time you enter Gloria Van Graff's weapon shop, you find her negotiating with a customer. [[KickTheDog She orders her brother to execute one of their own employees]] to demonstrate to the customer (and the player) just how ruthless they are.
** For the most part, authority figures in ''Fallout'' tend to be corrupt, selfish, or outright evil. Thus, it isn't shocking when you enter the Kings Gang hideout that [[TheStarscream the guard]] demands you pay an entrance fee to see The King. When you meet him, the player asks if he always charges a fee to see him, to which The King responds that [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure there isn't]]. He'll then immediately repay whatever money the guard scammed from you, joking you must have really wanted to have met him.
** You first encounter The Rose of Sharon Cassidy, AKA "Cass," stuck at an NCR checkpoint, and therefore camping the nearest bar. She's drunk, and everything she says is either an insult, a threat to fight something, or a threat to fuck something, while swearing every third word. It's not hard to tell what she's all about.
--->''No one's dick is that long. Not even Long Dick Johnson's, and he had a fucking long dick. Thus the name.
* ''VideoGame/FantasticNightDreamsCotton'' does a good job at establishing its heroine's [[NominalHero personality]] in the intro: as the land of Filament starts suffering from TheNightThatNeverEnds, Cotton is seen wandering around, fantasizing about snacking on [[TrademarkFavoriteFood Willows]] as opposed to caring about the ongoing crisis. Then she runs into the fairy Silk, who tearfully begs her to save her land from the monsters causing havok there...only for Cotton to [[BystanderSyndrome promptly ignore her and go on her way]]. When Silk makes mention of a giant Willow that can be made from seven smaller ones, [[FoodAsBribe she immediately changes her mind]].
* ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'':
** Most of the characters in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'' get at least one moment early on which showcases their personality, but the blue ribbon almost certainly goes to Kefka, who's introduced as he slips a mind control device on Terra (''and [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope somehow gets even worse from there]]''). The true standout moment for him, though, is shortly after Terra and Locke arrive at Figaro Castle, where they and Edgar are informed that someone from the Empire is going to be arriving soon and Edgar remarks, "Probably Kefka," establishing that not only is Kefka going to be a key antagonist--as it turns out, the BigBad--but also that he's not ShroudedInMyth, he's a well-known psychotic enforcer of Emperor Gestahl who he regularly sends out on missions. We also get our first taste of Kefka's iconic theme music, which also demonstrates just who he is very well, but he's then shown approaching the castle with a couple of soldiers, complaining about Figaro Castle being in the middle of a desert and miffed that there's sand on his boots, prompting the soldiers to quickly brush the sand off and then salute him. He leaves not much later after talking with Edgar for a bit, only to return to set the castle on fire. We would expect no less from probably the closest a [=JRPG=] has ever gotten to ComicBook/TheJoker.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'':
*** Cloud's introduced doing a ridiculous sideways flip off the top of a train rather than just using the door, effortlessly killing two people with a [[{{BFS}} hilariously gigantic sword]], helicoptering the sword around his head with one hand, striking a pose, and then telling two perfectly friendly and likeable characters that he doesn't care about their names and as soon as he's finished this job he's out of here. The egotistical [[HiddenHeartOfGold facade]] has to be introduced clearly since the rest of the game is all about proving he's not really like that.
*** After a couple of {{Pre Meeting}}s, Aeris's formal introduction has her [[WhiteMagicianGirl looking after Cloud in a church where flowers are inexplicably growing, wearing pink and looking as White Magey as can be]]... [[GoodBadGirl and immediately cracking up when Cloud makes an unintentional implication that he's a prostitute]]. Strange men enter, coming after her for mysterious reasons, and she asks Cloud if he's willing to be her bodyguard and protect her... and in return, she'll go out with him. Then they're sitting in a playground Aeris used to go to when she was little, and Aeris tells Cloud about her first love... before escorting Cloud to the city's red-light district, convincing him to dress as a woman, calling him 'cute', and getting him to seduce a fat pimp. You get the picture.
*** Rufus Shinra's introduction when he arrives in a helicopter to find his father killed by Sephiroth. Aerith/Aeris says of him "I've heard that no one's ever seen him bleed or cry." His appointment speech, along with fighting SuperSoldier Cloud and surviving, and managing to escape by holding on to the helicopter with one hand while heavily wounded all perfectly establish him as the badass CorruptCorporateExecutive that he is.
--->'''Rufus Shinra:''' ''That's right. I'll let you hear my new appointment speech...My old man tried to control the world with money. It seems to have been working. The population thought that Shinra would protect them. Work at Shinra, get your pay. If a terrorist attacks, the Shinra army will help you. It looks perfect on the outside. But, I do things differently. I'll control the world with fear. It takes too much to do it like my old man. A little fear will control the minds of the common people. There's no reason to waste money on them.''
*** The whole Nibelheim Incident flashback was one big coolness-establishing moment for Sephiroth. Everything in it... even the way Sephiroth always walked when others ran in cutscenes, even though the running was just a convenience to get movement from place to place over more quickly and we probably weren't expected to really think that most characters were in the habit of running around like hyperactive chipmunks all the time. The ''real'' establishing moment for Sephiroth cannot, however, be anything other than the fight with the dragon. At this point in the game, the first-time player might feel like a badass for doing over 100 damage with a single attack; then you get to this fight, wherein Sephiroth runs forward, swings his sword, and hits for ''over 3,000.'' After that when Cloud says, "Sephiroth's strength is unreal. He's far stronger in reality than any story you might have heard about him," you damn well know he's telling the truth.
*** Zack in ''VideoGame/CrisisCore'' is introduced to the player by jumping out of a helicopter in mid-air, land perfectly fine on a train riding at high speed below, and running along it, preparing to take down some baddies. When they shoot at him, he says "Well, hello to you, too!" and dodges all bullets, does an impossibly long jump, and separates two train cars from each other by stabbing the connection with his sword. [[BigDamnHeroes He's the hero of the game, alright]].
** All of the main characters in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'' get introductory animations:
*** Zell is seen shadowboxing and doing a backflip in the entry hall of Balamb Garden, establishing himself as an excessively energetic kind of guy.
*** Selphie falls down a hill and does a cheerful "silly me" gesture, but her character is established before then when she [[CrashIntoHello collides with Squall]] while running late for class.
*** Irvine is shown lying on his back, holding his hand up so steadily that a butterfly lands on it.
*** Squall's initial appearance in the opening FMV illustrates that he's a {{Determinator}}, but it's his scene in the infirmary with Dr. Kadowaki and the walk to class with Quistis that really establish his personality. Likewise, Rinoa's appearance at the [=SeeD=] graduation ball when she succeeds not only in getting Squall to dance with her but getting him to relax enough to dance ''well'', establishes ''her'' character.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX'' brings out one for almost every single character introduced- hero or villain:
*** [[TheHero Zidane]], having already proved himself a talented fighter, thief, and actor, turns out to be something of a HandsomeLech when he's sent into Alexandria castle to abduct the princess- only to end up getting distracted by an attractive woman.
*** [[ChildMage Vivi]], already introduced [[TheKlutz tripping over his own feet]] and staring in amazement at the sight of the airship flying overhead, spends the next few minutes [[TheWoobie getting knocked down, insulted, bullied, and pickpocketed]]. For good measure, his ticket to the play turns out to be a fake. Then, just when it looks as though he's about to get arrested for trespassing, he [[BewareTheNiceOnes fights back by launching a fireball from his hands!]]
*** [[RebelliousPrincess Garnet]] mistakes Zidane and Blank for palace guards and makes an impressive escape from them on foot. And when she realizes that Zidane's actually there to kidnap her, she changes tune and ''formally requests to be abducted.''
*** [[ButtMonkey Captain Steiner]] gets a whole segment of the game's earliest level to prove himself a laughingstock: not only is he constantly upstaged by Beatrix, forgotten by the Queen, and saddled with the dumbest unit of soldiers in the entire Alexandrian military, but he's also a pompous twit with a habit of [[CharacterTics jumping up and down in impotent rage]]. But at the end of this segment, he sees Garnet being chased across the castle by Zidane; believing her to be under attack, he immediately grabs a rope and swings after them. True, he almost immediately crashes into a wall, [[TheDeterminator but there's no denying the man's dedication.]]
*** [[GoldFishPoopGang "We are in trouble!" "Trouble we are in!"]]
*** After her unassuming introduction at a bar with Zidane, [[LadyOfWar Freya Crescent]] is later seen [[RoofHopping wandering the rooftops]] of Lindblum, apparently lost in thought, musing on the war brewing and worrying about Sir Fratley.
*** [[JokeCharacter Quina Quen]] trying to catch frogs and failing miserably- before joining Zidane out of a desire to see the world and sample its many foods.
*** General Beatrix: if the ominous music and the BadassBoast don't make it clear [[OneManArmy who you're dealing with]], the HopelessBossFight ''will.''
*** Having been introduced as an advisor to Queen Brahne, [[AgentPeacock Kuja]] proceeds to make as big a spectacle of himself as possible: overdramatically commenting on the [[WhenItRainsItPours weather]], providing details on the Burmecian retreat using some oddly cryptic word choices, bragging about the magical power he'll use to defeat the Cleyran defences, and referring to Brahne's black mage army as "his." Then, when Beatrix has kicked the asses of Zidane and co, Kuja stays behind to examine them... then without saying another word, he departs on the back of a silver dragon. [[EvilIsHammy Hammy]], melodramatic, weirdly-dressed... and the ''[[TheManBehindTheMan real]]'' [[TheManBehindTheMan power behind Brahne's invasion.]]
*** Disc 2 manages to establish the character of an entire faction in one short scene: after almost an entire disc of battles with Queen Brahne's mass-produced black mages, the party bumps into another one of them in Conde Petie. Unlike the others, [[TokenHeroicOrc this one appears to be sentient]], and by all appearances, ''he's on a shopping trip''. And when he finally notices the party, he responds not by shouting "KILL!" and pelting them with magic, but by [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere turning tail and running as fast as possible in the opposite direction]].
*** At the beginning of the third disc, the battle of Alexandria and Kuja's attempted capture of the eidolon Alexander is interrupted by the arrival of a huge, futuristic airship. Within, a mysterious figure dressed in a [[EvilWearsBlack glistening black exoskeleton and cape]] surveys the scene below; he takes the time to muse in disappointment on Kuja's attempt at interfering with his plans, before casting a spell: minutes later, Alexander dies horribly and Alexandria palace vanishes in a colossal fireball, leaving Kuja upstaged, OutGambitted -- and most notably of all, [[HorrifyingTheHorror horrified]] at the fact that ''''' Garland''''' himself is now after him.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'':
*** Auron is introduced in a way that officially sets up his "CoolOldGuy who knows a lot more about what's going than he tells people" credentials: He [[DramaticHighPerching climbs up to a high place]] and seems to welcome Sin as it comes closer to Zanarkand without a word. He then walks calmly through the street as a wave of water approaches the city and begins to ''disintegrate it'', and when he shows up later to help fight off monsters, once again without losing the cool head, he's officially established as the resident DeadpanSnarker / {{Samurai}}. He has another one when he actually joins the party. He stares down a lizard the size of a horse and then proceeds to kill it in a single swing.
*** Played with by Seymour in the same game--he invokes the trope deliberately by slaughtering attacking fiends in the most [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill overkilltastic]] way possible, intending to establish himself to the population of Spira as an incredibly powerful savior figure. However, the moment that establishes his ''real'' character for the player's convenience happens a little bit later, in just six words: "Then pretend I didn't say it."[[labelnote:Context]]Wakka had just questioned the use of machina in Operation Mi'Hen, given that they're against the teachings of Yevon. Seymour -- a maester (read: archbishop) of Yevon -- tells him to pretend they aren't there. This line is his shrugging off Wakka's shock at a maester so blithely blowing off his own religion's rules.[[/labelnote]]
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII'': The BigBad Vayne is introduced giving a speech to a kingdom he's just recently conquered. By the end of his speech, the crowd goes from jeering at him to giving near unanimous applause.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'':
*** Lightning is first seen in the intro calmly pointing her gun at a group of soldiers whose weapons are all trained on her, setting her up as an ActionGirl. She later appears holding an oversized, delicate dandelion in her hands, watching it with her usual stoic expression, managing to not disturb the fluff until the wind blows it away, showing her HiddenHeartOfGold.
*** The other characters have this as well. Sazh comforts a frightened child when his chocobo pops out of his afro, Snow and the rest of NORA talk about heroism, Hope crawls away in fear when he's offered a gun, and Vanille playfully says "bang" when she gets her own gun.
*** Lightning gets another, in-universe one in a flashback of her introduction to Sazh. She volunteers to be put on a purge train along with civilians and surrenders her weapon without incident. When a bemused Sazh asks her about it, she gives him a cold one-liner ("If you want 'quiet', I suggest you take the next train"), establishing her as a mysterious elegant badass whose game Sazh now really wants to figure out.
* In the ''Franchise/FireEmblem'':
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemTheBlazingBlade'':
*** Hector's introduction has him enter the scene and see his friend Eliwood being attacked by a band of assassins. [[WhatTheHellHero He yells at the nearby guard for doing nothing to help,]] who tells him that affairs here were "of no concern to a foreign lordling." Hector responds by killing the man on the spot because he doesn't have time to argue and figures the guard was in on it, [[BloodKnight and then joins the fight]] while telling half his escort to [[HotBlooded get to safety so they don't get in his way.]]
*** Minor villain Pascal Grentzer asserts his status as perhaps the vilest individual in the game when, upon being released from prison, he attempts an IHaveYouNowMyPretty on his liberator...who happens to be a DarkMagicalGirl {{Manipulative B|astard}}itch mom who could quite easily turn him inside-out with magic. She quickly asserts control over him, but what he would've done to anyone less willful is disturbingly clear...
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemTheSacredStones''
*** Ephraim very quickly shows what kind of a man he is when he refuses to drag innocent civilians into his problems (showcasing his genuinely honorable side) and decides to besiege an enemy castle with himself and three guys (showing his recklessness and love of battle).
*** In Innes' introductory scene, he, returning from the front, confidently asserts that none of the "slugs" from Grado could touch him. He then chides Ephraim for allowing Grado the chance to strike Renais, sparking a brief argument between them. This establishes his confident but abrasive personality.
*** Chapter 5 opens with Joshua noticing the arena and wanting to take his chances there, acts rather polite to a passing Natasha and remarks how beautiful she is, and then offers another soldier to go to the arena alongside him. Joshua even gives a little monologue about how unlucky he is, and admits to not liking to fight women.
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemFates''
*** [[BigBrotherMentor Xander]], [[PlayerCharacter Corrin's]] older brother and crown prince of Nohr, is shown training the protagonist in battle, and warns Corrin that if s/he doesn't manage to land a hit, their father, King Garon, won't allow Corrin to leave the Northern Fortress. Since that's meant to encourage Corrin to succeed, it shows that Xander is strict and serious but cares for his siblings.
*** After Corrin passes the test, Leo makes some remarks about how strength is more than just wielding a sword, hinting at his jealousy of Corrin.
*** [[GenkiGirl Elise]] enthusiastically throws herself on Corrin, hugging her sibling.
*** Camilla asks Corrin if s/he got hurt during practice, establishing her MyBelovedSmother relationship with her younger sibling.
*** King Garon's moment comes when he demands that Corrin execute several Hoshidan prisoners of war, and plans on severely punishing Corrin when s/he defies him.
*** Corrin's decision to risk his/her life to protect his/her own enemies from being killed establishes him/her as someone who's determined to risk everything to do what s/he believes is right.
*** Hinoka is first seen defending Sakura from the Faceless. When she sees Corrin again, she breaks down and is overjoyed to see Corrin again, having trained hard to save and protect Corrin.
*** When Takumi first meets Corrin, he bluntly says he doesn't trust him/her and asks if Corrin is going back to Nohr soon. He also extends the same treatment to Azura, who's been living with his family for years, and says she isn't even allowed to call him by name.
*** From ''Birthright'', Setsuna is first seen sinking into quicksand, while Azama snarks at her rather than help. As Hinoka puts it, her retainers aren't very useful.
*** Also from ''Birthright'', Takumi's retainers are first encountered searching for him in Izumo. Hinata is said to have tied up and gagged several Nohrian soldiers ''before asking any questions'' and says he'll do that to as many people as it takes to find Takumi, showing that while he isn't very bright, he's devoted to Takumi. Meanwhile, Oboro daydreams about taking a romantic outing with Takumi.
** In ''VideoGame/FireEmblemEchoesShadowsOfValentia'', Jesse is introduced locked up in a dungeon cell because he decided it was a good idea to [[FearlessFool charge after some thieves]] who kidnapped [[ChivalrousPervert a cute girl]]. He then takes Boey's sarcastic remark on the matter [[ComicallyMissingThePoint as a compliment]].
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses''
*** Hanneman, one of the professors at Garreg Mach, introduces himself by asking [[PlayerCharacter Byleth]] if he can study whatever Crest they might have. After his colleague Manuela introduces herself as "a professor, a physician, a songstress, and available," establishing her occupations and her desire for a significant other, Hanneman cuts her off, showing that the two don't always get along.
*** Seteth, the NumberTwo to Archbishop Rhea of the Church of Seiros, gets this in his second scene. He protests her decision to allow Byleth to teach at the Garreg Mach monastery's Officers' Academy, citing that his sister Flayn is staying there now, but reluctantly accepts Rhea's decision. This establishes his three most important relationships- he's protective of Flayn, is loyal to Rhea even if he doesn't always agree with her, and is suspicious of Byleth.
*** While [[NervousWreck Bernadetta]]'s timidity and social anxiety are obvious any time you speak with her, if you do not join the Black Eagles and talk to her in the monastery, she will politely greet you, then flee to her room.
*** When the Death Knight is introduced in Chapter 4, he refuses to obey his allies' orders to fight the intruders (but will attack anyone who steps into his movement range on [[HarderThanHard Maddening]]). While usually stoic, he will express surprise if he goes into battle with Mercedes, [[spoiler:hinting at her identity as his older sister]].
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemEngage'':
*** The player first meets Prince Alcryst of Brodia when crossing from Firene to Brodia. Suspicious of [[PlayerCharacter Alear]] and Alfred, he shoots a warning shot just past the latter's head and promises he won't miss next time, until Alear reveals their identity as the Divine Dragon and Alfred's identity as the crown prince of Firene. Alcryst then leaps into the air... and enters a PoseOfSupplication begging for forgiveness.
*** In the following chapter, Princess Ivy of Elusia lands in the Brodia castle courtyard, having evaded all enemy attacks on her wyvern. After informing Alear and the Brodian royals that she has come for their ring, she gives them a chance to surrender before the fighting starts. She then remarks that Alear is as "stunning" as her sister Hortensia had said. All this establishes Ivy as an honorable person who secretly worships the Divine Dragon.
* The main enemy bots of ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddysSecurityBreach'' get a scene unsubtly showcasing their main personality trait: Roxy is [[{{Pride}} reciting compliments to herself in front of a mirror]], Monty is [[HairTriggerTemper wrecking his room while roaring]], and Glamrock Chica is playing a guitar solo... but is also found [[VillainousGlutton eating pizza from a pile of trash]] shortly after.
* Episode one of ''VideoGame/GameOfThronesTelltale'', for those who hadn't read the [[Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire books]] or watched the [[Series/GameOfThrones show]], goes really out its way to establish the kind of man [[AxCrazy Ramsay Snow]] is. [[TheDreaded Whenever he is spoken of, it comes with a very noticeable sense of dread in the voice of the person speaking.]] His first scene shows him [[FlayingAlive flay a man alive for not acknowledging his father's rule.]] The end sees him [[FauxAffablyEvil playfully taunting the new and young Lord Ethan Forrester]], and then threatening to rape his twin sister, followed by him [[spoiler:stabbing Ethan in the throat and taking his younger brother as a hostage, and cheerfully leaving the room while Ethan's family watches him bleed to death]].
* ''VideoGame/GearsOfWar'': You know the Cole Train means business when his first appearance is taking on about 10 Locust on his own, not even bothering to take cover. In the second game, he first appears coming to your rescue - ''while making a squad of Locust about to kill you run away scared.''
* In the opening scene of ''VideoGame/GhostOfTsushima'', Lord Shimura, head of the samurai army in charge of dealing with the Mongol invasion, sends his best fighter down to the beach to challenge their best fighter to an honorable duel. The head of the Mongols, Khotun Khan, upon hearing the challenge, wordlessly douses the samurai in alcohol, sets him on fire, and decapitates him. Then shortly afterwards, he demands that the samurai army surrender themselves. This gives a clear demonstration that both Khotun Khan and the Mongolian army are a ruthless [[CombatPragmatist Combat Pragmatists]] who do not abide by the samurai code.
* In the ''VideoGame/GodOfWar'' series:
** In first ''VideoGame/GodOfWarI'', the player quickly learns all he/she needs to know about Kratos in two moments during the opening sequence.
*** If he executes a Grab attack on the initial zombie {{Mooks}}, he can drive them to the ground and stab them repeatedly, impale them on his chainblade and whip them around, or ''tear them in half with his bare hands''. Whatever is about to happen that will make him hurl himself off a cliff in the intro, Kratos clearly begins as a man not to be trifled with.
*** The first real display of his personality probably comes from his treatment of the hydra. It swallows a man with a key he needs. After killing the beast in badass fashion, Kratos stalks into its mouth to retrieve the key. The key is around the neck of the ship captain, who thanks him for coming back. Kratos' reply? "I didn't come back for ''you''." He then proceeds to rip the key off him, then sends him down the hydra's throat for no reason whatsoever. Kratos: Mighty warrior, and complete [[{{Jerkass}} asshole]].
** In ''VideoGame/GodOfWarPS4'', the Stranger gets one during his first encounter with Kratos - initially, he comes off as a TooDumbToLive {{Jerkass}}, who deliberately tries to provoke Kratos into a fight and gets knocked into the ground for his trouble, only to get up again, shake himself off, and then ''punch Kratos hard enough to launch him over his house''. The ensuing boss battle proves that while the Stranger is an arrogant prick, [[SmugSuper he's fully capable of backing up that arrogance with actual power and skill]].
** In ''VideoGame/GodOfWarRagnarok'', Odin's first appearance has him knocking on Kratos' door and introducing himself with [[BadassBoast "You know who I am."]] He then proceeds to grab a chair and set it down at the table, immediately taking over the conversation, a peace offer from the Aesir to Kratos. Odin discusses the deaths of Thor's sons in the previous game, but shrugs them off as self-defense on Kratos' part, while admitting - [[KickTheDog right in front of Thor]] - that Magni and Modni were "kind of useless," though he does want compensation for the death of Baldur, purely because of how good a "closer" he was for Odin. He also demands that Atreus stop investigating the whereabouts of Tyr, something Kratos wasn't aware of, which drives a wedge between Kratos and Atreus while also putting them on a predictable trajectory should they decide to act against Odin. He tries to encourage Thor, who we later learn is a recovering alcoholic, to take a drink of mead, which leads Odin to complain that Thor is "no fun anymore" and drink his ''and'' [[EnemyEatsYourLunch Kratos' servings]]. Finally, when Kratos turns down Odin's offer, the latter lets Thor smash Kratos right out of his house, giving Odin time alone with Atreus to invite him to Asgard to play a role in Odin's plans. Conclusion: Odin is an egotistical ControlFreak, {{Abusive Parent|s}}, and ManipulativeBastard who puts on [[FauxAffablyEvil a front of being reasonable and affable]] but ultimately [[TheSociopath cares about no one but himself.]]
* ''VideoGame/GoldenSun'' and the sequels have a large cast of characters, most of them [[FlatCharacter flat]]. As a result, their characterization is established immediately upon meeting them, and there's not much development afterward.
** ''VideoGame/GoldenSun1'' (''The Broken Seal''):
*** Garet gets one in the prologue: "What, Isaac? I'm trying to save my stuff! ...it's too dangerous? All right, I'll go with you." And a few moments later: "It's times like this that we men have to stick together!"
*** Ivan is introduced [[MindOverManners violating the mental privacy of two total strangers]], and being surprised when they [[InvisibleToNormals call him on it]].
*** Mia's first scene shows her using [[HealingHands her powers]] to help a sickly old man, and fretting that someone has broken into Mercury Lighthouse, which she is bound by her familial duty to protect. Duty-driven WhiteMagicianGirl. Next!
*** Felix, at Level 5, ''calls out the first game's endbosses'' over kidnapping Sheba, and later ''jumps off Venus Lighthouse'' to rescue her when she falls. AlwaysSaveTheGirl much?
** ''VideoGame/GoldenSunTheLostAge'':
*** The entire intro of ''The Lost Age'' shows Jenna's development from the previous game's DamselInDistress into this game's ActionGirl.
*** Sheba starts the game by telling Felix and Jenna that she's destined to help them, forcing her way into the player party and refusing to take "no" for an answer. This shows her development from the previous game's DamselInDistress (there were two) into this game's snarky, ''pushy'' BlackMagicianGirl.
*** Piers is first seen as a PlayAlongPrisoner in Madra after being wrongly arrested for a pirate attack. He has an alibi, and he could just break out using his Psynergy, but the latter would be misusing his powers and the former would [[{{Atlantis}} raise more questions]], so he decides to wait for the mayor to prove his innocence by other means. In the meantime, he tolerates abusive guards and mentally kicks himself after lashing out at one with his Psynergy. Secretive and mysterious, but kind, patient, and law-abiding, with a strong sense of responsibility.
*** In the same game, Karst's first appearance is standing in the middle of a busy city, asking ''everyone she sees'' if they've seen her (late) CoolBigSis. Sure enough, [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge she takes the news badly]].
*** Agatio's establishing moment is telling Alex ''he knows'' he's being made to play the DumbMuscle role and is only playing along because it furthers his goals as well.
*** A rather surprising one for ''Issac'' comes late in ''The Lost Age''. Being a HeroicMime in the first game, players were free to imagine what his personality was like, and official guides suggested he was a total NiceGuy. In ''The Lost Age'', [[SuddenlySpeaking he starts speaking for himself]], and the first time we encounter him is after Garet and Mia have been caught in a trap set by Agatio and Karst. One of the first things out of his mouth is a rather curt "If you're not going to help us, then get out of our way", then displays very little hesitation in drawing his blade when it becomes clear the two are hostile. The whole scene shows us that A) He's under a lot of stress, and B) He's quite willing to be confrontational.
** ''VideoGame/GoldenSunDarkDawn'':
*** Karis and Tyrell are established at the beginning of ''Dark Dawn'' with their actions - Karis yelling at Tyrell to get off the roof before he breaks the soarwing, and Tyrell flying off of said roof thinking he could just use it despite being an inexperienced Mars Adept.
*** Rief is introduced trying to get a better look at a giant Psynergy Vortex. Great for book smarts, not so much for common sense.
*** Sveta is first seen as a faint figure in Te Rya who flees every time she's seen, then later in Teppe Ruins showing you where to go and leaving some of her climbing gear for you. By the time she actually introduces herself, she's shown herself to be shy, considerate, and very athletic.
* In ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV'', shortly after Niko [[spoiler:kills his subordinate Vlad]], he and Roman are kidnapped and wake up tied to chairs in the basement of Russian mob boss Mikhail Faustin. He immediately establishes himself as violent, unconcerned with human life, and ''batshit insane'':
-->'''Mikhail''': ''[Pointing a gun at Niko]'' You think it's okay to kill one of my employees?
-->'''Niko''': If he's an asshole, yes.
-->''[Mikhail suddenly turns and [[BlofeldPloy shoots an employee who had angered him]]]''
-->'''Mikhail''': ''[smiling]'' I agree!
* ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoV'' has a few for each of the main characters.
** Michael gets his mask taken off by a zealous guard during the Ludendorff heist, and advises him to just walk away and forget what he saw. Michael is a criminal but a relatively pragmatic and merciful one. He's the kind of guy who (as he says later) may be no angel but, compared to his companions, [[NobleDemon may just as well look like one]].
*** This mercy goes right out the window when Michael's [[BerserkButton family]] gets involved, leading to [[spoiler: smashed TV screens, houses turned to ruin, [[EtTuBrute betrayal...]]]]
** Franklin's kind of a blank slate, but contextualized by his friends and coworkers. We are introduced to him performing a repo job on a car, and Lamar takes this as free license to have a joyride with the repossessed vehicles. Frank's boss is a schmooze, and Lamar's attempts to branch out usually end up in shootouts and police chases. Franklin's master plan to "get out of this bullshit" is to "get serious" (move up the organised crime ladder) rather than get caught up in the dead-end of petty street gang rivalries. His rare conversations with his [[AmicableExes Amicable Ex]], Tanisha (where he usually gets told off for disrespecting his old friends and living a life of crime), are pretty big ECM's.
** Trevor's introduction (where he is found rutting with a fellow meth user in a filth-encrusted trailer) has him realise that Michael is still alive. This revelation tips him over the edge, causing him to [[CurbStompBattle brutally curb stomp]] the meth head's biker boyfriend for daring to confront him (and for bonus points, said biker is the protagonist of a previous entry). Without another second's hesitation, Trevor decides the most pragmatic thing to do is to completely wipe out his fellow bikers ''immediately'' before they can retaliate and, just for good measure, wipe out a local Latino gang as well, giving him control of all the drugs and guns in the area. [[EvilGenius Trevor: insane, remorseless and violent, but also intelligent enough to do speed chess gambits and come up with audacious solutions to his own nutsoid problems]].
* In ''VideoGame/GrowingUp'', each of your classmates' introductory scenes establishes their personalities:
** The {{tomboy}}ish Alex is first seen playing with her boy classmate in elementary and inviting the player to play superheroes or firefighters with them.
** Alicia the AlphaBitch is first seen bullying another girl for her loafers in middle school.
** The boisterous Bobbie can be first seen singing loudly outside school in elementary.
** Charles gets pompous on his first day of middle school by asking the player to vote for him for class president, even if he's running unopposed.
** When tasked in high school to find Felicity, the player finds her crying in the bathroom, dramatically complaining about how "fake" people are.
** Jake's first scene in elementary has him trying to defend his friend Buddy from Mort's gang of bullies, hinting towards his stubborn desire to fight crime when he's older. This is further shown when he plays superheroes with Buddy and the player.
** The stoic and studious Kato prefers doing his first high school project by himself, needing a little prodding to convince him to work with you. He also leaves the computer on at the library, hinting towards his secret online life.
** The aloof Nate begins his middle school years being dismissive towards you and burning the pages of his notebook, where he wrote his dark poem [[spoiler:about his parents' breakup.]]
** Richard starts out shyly playing the xylophone when the player first meets him in elementary.
** Sam the JerkJock establishes himself in high school by throwing an American football at you and laughing.
** Wendy immediately gets conscious about her prosthetic arm in middle school, but gushes about her love for horror movies and hatred for schoolwork.
** The rebellious Vivica angrily demands the player in high school to return her notebook to her, then groans at her [[AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents embarrassing mom]] taking her out for dinner after the first day.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Hades}}'', the eponymous god, who is massive and cloaked in shadow, yells at Zagreus to [[EscapedFromHell get out]]. Zagreus ''smirks''.
* In ''VideoGame/HalfLife1'', Gordon Freeman is shown to be a badass in the TUTORIAL by having him use the main gun and the 'nade launcher on a SMG or M16.
** Although [[ActionGirl Alyx's]] introduction in ''VideoGame/HalfLife2'' also works; Freeman is blacked out, and all we hear are Combine soldiers dying and "HAH! No you don't!" and then we see her face: "[[DeadpanSnarker Doctor Freeman, I presume.]]"
** [[RobotBuddy D0G]] gets two: one when he plays "fetch" with Gordon Freeman with the Gravity Gun. That basically pegs him as a lovable mecha, who acts like a BigFriendlyDog to people he deems his friends. For his second moment, it's shown how he reacts to people who ''aren't'' deemed as such: Combine APCs? Thrown into buildings like bricks. Dropships? D0G wrestles with them and wins handily.
*** In Episode 2 of Half-Life 2, D0G's intro is best summed up as [[CoolVsAwesome D0G vs. Strider]].
** Some of the monsters (and the [[ArmiesAreEvil HECU]]) get one throughout ''VideoGame/HalfLife1'' when you first meet them. For instance, the HECU grunt gunning down a scientist who comes running to him for aid, or the Gargantua effortlessly wiping out a squad of soldiers.
* ''{{Franchise/Halo}}'':
** ''VideoGame/HaloCombatEvolved'' establishes John-117 as a badass by having him snark at Cortana while the ship is being boarded, he is being hunted, and they have just found an artificial ring world floating in space. Meanwhile, Johnson is established as a badass who will make you laugh by having him give what's known as the [[ItMakesSenseInContext Giant Hula-Hoop Speech]].
** First in-engine cutscene of ''VideoGame/HaloInfinite'' shows Master Chief flying through the various debris in space, during which he throws around alien corpses rather dismissively, but when it comes to a body of his fellow marine he handles it quite gently. Further on, when he takes a rifle of another dead marine, he does so with a noticeable touch of hesitation. This particular installment in the series in general spends a lot of time showing Chief as a lot more [[GentleGiant compassionate character]].
** While Gravemind was already long established as a bad guy, he is defined as an ''asshole'' by having him gloat while betraying both the Arbiter and the Chief in ''VideoGame/Halo3''.
** Arbiter Thel 'Vadam gets one in ''VideoGame/Halo2''. When we first see him, he's on trial for failing to protect Halo from destruction. First, we learn that he's a super-competent fighter (being a Zealot Fleetmaster (admiral) in a society where AsskickingLeadsToLeadership and being a zealot alone means you've killed thousands). Second, we learn that he's also willing to ignore the HonorBeforeReason mentality of his species for the good of his forces and the galaxy at large by focusing on the [[TheVirus Flood]], possibly saving the galaxy but sacrificing the Halo. Then, when he is to be tortured for his failure, he makes good on his promise not to beg for the crowd's entertainment by not making a sound even as he's being electrocuted to the point of ''smoldering''. It takes a red-hot brand to the chest to get him to make a sound.
** In ''VideoGame/HaloReach'', all of Noble Team gets one:
*** Near the end of the first level, Noble gets ambushed by Zealot Elites with Energy Swords. Your character gets tackled by one (really emphasizing how big they are compared to you), avoids a stab to the stomach, and then punches the enemy in the jaw. Of course, it only serves to piss it off and you get saved by Carter, but it does demonstrate Noble Six's DefiantToTheEnd personality.
*** Kat has a very [[CuriosityIsACrapshoot possessive attitude toward the data found on Laszlo Sorvad's body]], seizing it from Six immediately.
*** [[GentleGiant Jorge]] takes his helmet off to make a civilian feel more secure and comfortable, which sets off Emile's moment where he shows his contempt toward civilians.
*** Carter [[TheMenFirst defends Kat against Halsey]].
** Halsey also gets her own moment in ''Reach'' by initially showing contempt to almost all of the Spartan-[=IIIs=] of Noble Team, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold while also showing a soft side toward Jorge, one of her Spartan-IIs]].
* ''VideoGame/HauntingGround'': Daniella. She is first introduced by [[JumpScare suddenly appearing]] [[NinjaMaid behind Fiona]] in the castle bedroom, offering some clothes, and then [[CreepyMonotone creepily talking]] to a painting across the room. Some time later, an optional cutscene shows her being [[IronWoobie very savagely interrogated by Riccardo, but still refusing to talk]]. Then she turns and gives Fiona a'' [[SarcasmMode lovely]] ''PsychoticSmirk. Just in case you didn't get it, the aforementioned smile drives Fiona into [[InterfaceScrew Panic Mode]] the second the cutscene ends.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Hiveswap}}'', Boldir enthusiastically asks if the protagonists are the "contact" she was supposed to meet and if Joey's name is an alias. No matter what they say in response, she is convinced that [[MistakenForSpies they are members of a conspiracy]].
* In ''VideoGame/HometownStory'', all new named characters have a scene in which they are shown arriving into town. While some are just seen strolling in, others quite clearly display their quirks. For example, Miyo is seen accidentally dropping stuff, while Haruka cleans up behind her, and Jacques comes in walking in zig-zags as if he's looking for something.
* ''VideoGame/HollowKnight'':
** The player first finds Quirrel examining the Black Egg Temple, expressing fascination for uncharted places.
** The first time you see Cloth, she's hiding underground, establishing her cowardly behavior.
** The first time the player meets Zote, [[ButtMonkey he's in the middle of getting attacked by a Vengefly.]] When the player defeats it, [[ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike he angrily berates the Knight for getting between him and his "prey",]] [[UngratefulBastard not even thanking them for saving his life.]]
* ''VideoGame/TheHouseOfTheDeadOVERKILL'' quickly establishes Isaac's [[SirSwearsALot foul-mouthed]], BlaxploitationParody character with the very first cutscene, where he gives his partner G a sucker-punch and quite the sharp-tongued greeting:
--> "What's up, ''motherfucker?!''"
* In ''[[VideoGame/HyperdimensionNeptuniaMk2 Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth2]]'', Red's first appearance has her [[IncomingHam enter]] a tense situation in an apparent BigDamnHeroes fashion... only to quickly reveal that she just wants [[TheHero Nepgear]] to [[HaremSeeker join her harem]].
* ''VideoGame/{{Ib}}'': Garry is introduced to the player (and Ib) [[DistressedDude in the process of dying]]. After being saved, he immediately [[CowardlyLion freaks out when he thinks Ib is one of the monsters]], before mellowing out and [[BigBrotherInstinct promising to protect her]] when he realises that she's just an ordinary little girl.
* Our first sight of Erol in ''VideoGame/JakIIRenegade'' has him telling a shackled, chained-down Jak on a Dark Eco injector slash torture device, "I'll be back later," after being told to finish Jak off that night. Daxter's first appearance in any game features him making the wisecracks. Ashelin enters the games by [[ActionGirl dropping from a tree and holding a gun to Jak's head]]. [[spoiler: Gol and Maia]] enter the picture telling a Lurker army to destroy a village. Yeah.
* ''VideoGame/KidIcarusUprising'':
** Moments after Dark Pit's creation, Pandora introduces him as her newest minion. He responds with an OffhandBackhand and joins you in the second half of her boss fight. Meet the WildCard.
** Also, there's [[spoiler: [[BigBad Hades]], who interrupts a Fake-Out Credit Sequence, [[IronicEcho quotes Pit's]] [[RealitySubtext "Sorry to keep you waiting"]], and nonchalantly and playfully explains how the entire plot up until that point was a gambit on his part.]]
** [[spoiler:Viridi]] shows up after the action of one chapter is suddenly interrupted by a ''massive'' bomb that destroys the battlefield Pit was overlooking. Her first lines?
--> "Hahaha! Nice shot, if I do say so myself. Good riddance, human ''scum!'' The world's better off without you!"
** [[spoiler:Pyrrhon]] showcases his overly boisterous, superhero-esque personality almost before he is seen onscreen.
--> "Villains are no match for ''[[spoiler:Pyrrhon]]!''
* ''VideoGame/{{killer7}}'': Curtis Blackburn is introduced to the player through a cutscene, where he loads his gun while sitting across from a prostitute in his car... before shooting her in the head. All while classical music plays. He then strolls out of the car and into an office building, whereupon the player witnesses him (from his first-person perspective) casually making his way into a waiting room and killing everyone in there, before cornering a terrified young woman. Even before we learn [[PaedoHunt much worse]] [[WouldHurtAChild things about]] [[OrganTheft Curtis Blackburn]], the cutscene makes it clear [[KnightOfCerebus there is nothing funny about this man]].
* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'':
** [[TheHeart Kairi]] is introduced (after the opening) with a detailed close-up of her teasing Sora and giggling, clearly the girl Sora has a crush on, and [[TheRival Riku]] is introduced confidently tossing logs around and being the responsible, hardworking one, setting him up as the guy Sora wants to be.
** King Mickey is introduced in the finale on the other side of Kingdom Hearts. He appears warding off countless heartless with the light of his keyblade, then looking over his shoulder to say some inspiring words to the heroes. He only gets better in [[VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII the sequel]].
** ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep'':
*** Waking up after a mysterious, vaguely ominous dream, [[AngstWhatAngst Ventus]] notices with childlike glee that a meteor shower is starting.
*** Aqua lightly nags Ventus for falling asleep outside and tousles his hair, [[TeamMom looking after him as they walk so he doesn't fall]]. [[note]]Ventus is ''15''.[[/note]]
*** Terra exposits in a [[PurpleProse purplish]] manner about the philosophical meaning of other worlds, then tells a confused Ventus that he'll understand when he's older.
* ''Franchise/{{Kirby}}'':
** ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand'' establishes how [[{{Greed}} greedy]] King Dedede is by stealing all of the food from Dream Land.
** ''VideoGame/KirbyTripleDeluxe'' gives us a pretty good introduction to [[spoiler:Queen Sectonia]]; the moment Taranza summons her for protection, she responds by trying to off him for [[spoiler:capturing King Dedede instead of Kirby]].
** President Haltmann has a pretty similar one in ''VideoGame/KirbyPlanetRobobot'' after [[spoiler:Mecha Knight+]] is defeated, only unlike Sectonia, who tries to kill Taranza for his failure, Haltmann is more subtle and just dismisses Susie for her repeated failures to stop Kirby.
** In ''VideoGame/KirbyStarAllies'', what's the first thing Hyness does the moment Kirby and friends finally encounter him? He tells the weakened Zan Partizanne that she's in his way, and he ''swats her across the room.''
* The opening to ''VideoGame/Left4Dead'' quickly establishes the dynamic between the four survivors. Bill [[TeamDad leads the group through an alleyway]] using military hand signs, and specifically investigates the zombie remains in hopes of understanding them. Francis makes [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold asshole remarks, yet during a horde helps the others up while quipping]]. Louis [[ThePollyanna remains optimistic and hopeful]]. However, Zoey's GenreSavvy nature never comes up.
** The opening to ''VideoGame/Left4Dead2'' is less movie-like, but still has this. Coach's quips are centered around his TeamDad status ("This used to be a ''nice'' neighbourhood!"). Ellis is fairly enthusiastic about kicking zombie ass ("Kill all sons of bitches. That's my 'ficial instructions."), and grins goofily when Rochelle gives him a grenade launcher. Rochelle [[SadClown uses mild snark to keep herself and the group going]] (When faced with a load of zombies: "Kill all sons of bitches, right?"). Nick [[{{Jerkass}} mocks Coach for being fat]], and, more subtly, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold is always the first to help people in trouble]].
*** Nick sums up every survivor in the ''Left 4 Dead'' franchise:
-->'''Nick:''' [[BadassBoast I have not...Come this far...To die NOW!]]
* Several party members in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfDragoon''.
** Lavitz is introduced trying to save his men from [[TheAlcatraz Hellena]] Wardens and telling them to go warn King Albert of Imperial Sandora's actions, showing him to be both dutiful and responsible.
** Rose first appears casually identifying a dragon, saving Dart's life, and offhandedly wondering why Sandora would bother using a dragon to wipe out a small village. All painting her as knowledgeable about obscure subjects, callous about life and death, but still a good person.
** Haschel mocks another fighter before punching him out then having a serious conversation with Dart, marking him as a BunnyEarsLawyer.
** Meru accuses some bandits of groping her then beats them up and mocks them before demanding the party bring her along to rescue a villager from the bandits' boss, showing her to be a GenkiGirl.
** Miranda punches one of her subordinates for dismissing witness testimony about the Divine Dragon but also promises Shana to protect the rest of the party when [[spoiler:Shana's dragoon spirit abandons her for Miranda]], marking her as a JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
* ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'':
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'':
*** Ganondorf's first appearance is in a dream and his second is faking loyalty to the king. However, in his third appearance, he knocks Link to the ground with a single attack and says, "I am Ganondorf! And soon, I will rule the world!" Before that, the first time you hear of Ganondorf's actions, you find out that he was the one who put the death curse on the Deku Tree for not giving him what he wanted.
*** Princess Zelda gets one when you first meet her in her courtyard - though she's surprised that you got past the guards, she doesn't have you thrown out and, after Link confirms the Deku Tree gave him the Kokiri Emerald, she tells Link of her [[{{Seers}} dream]] and shows him Ganondorf through the window. She then says that, though he has pledged allegiance to her father, [[ProperlyParanoid she doesn't trust him]], indicating she's a ''far'' better judge of character than most of the adults in Hyrule.
*** [[NiceGirl Saria]], the first character you see when you leave your home the first time in the game, also has one. She cheerfully runs up to Link to greet him and says the Deku Tree wants to talk to him. When Mido won't let Link past because he has no sword and shield, Saria says [[JerkassHasAPoint though he's a jerk, he has a point and you could get hurt]] and tells you where to find a shield.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'':
*** Primarily, Midna's mysterious and sudden appearance showcases her mocking and less than serious nature, along with some of her [[JerkAss impertinent]] and [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] aspects.
*** The times you first see or hear about Zant paint a picture of him as menacing and composed, which is accurate to when you finally get along to meeting him yourself. [[spoiler: Of course, it later turns out he's faking it and is actually quite the opposite -- a deranged madman]].
*** [[spoiler:Ganondorf's]] introduction also shows he hasn't lost any of his [[spoiler: cruel or ruthless]] nature.
*** Zelda's gloomy introduction also shows off her more somber personality compared to the other games.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'': The first thing [[ShrinkingViolet Paya]] exclaims when Link suddenly appears in front of her for the first time is, ''"A MAN?!"'', while bashfully hiding her face.
* ''Franchise/LifeIsStrange'' franchise:
** ''VideoGame/LifeIsStrange'':
*** Max gets stressed from class, makes her way to the bathroom while wearing her headphones to avoid interacting with anyone to try to collect herself alone in the bathroom, then sees something cool and photographs it. After developing her powers, and despite not having a clue what's going on, [[ChronicHeroSyndrome she endeavours to rescue the (apparent) stranger who just got shot]].
*** Nathan aggressively barges in with barely any awareness. He also gives himself a pep talk while looking in the mirror, but which quickly turns into a rant about how he could blow up the school. After Chloe pushes his buttons (by bringing the possibility of angering his father), he draws a gun to threaten her and accidentally kills her.
*** Chloe enters confidentially, sneaks in a complaint about her stepfather David, methodically (but quickly) makes sure there's nobody in the stalls, and then immediately starts trying to blackmail Nathan. When her browbeating accidentally sets Nathan off, she lets her mask slip enough to look scared while trying to threaten him into backing down, and when Max sets off the fire alarm as a distraction she knees him in the crotch before slinking off.
** ''VideoGame/LifeIsStrangeBeforeTheStorm'':
*** In her introduction, Chloe faces down an oncoming train before jumping away at the very last second.
*** David has insisted that he take Chloe to school. When she arrives at his car, the first thing he does is gripe about how women take so long to get ready. Then he asks for help [[{{Hypocrite}} fixing his car before they can go]].
*** Skip, the head security guard, gives a friendly greeting to Chloe at school and asks for her opinion of his garage band's song, establishing him as a {{foil}} for David, who will eventually take his place.
* If you're an IdiotHero in the ''VideoGame/{{Lufia}}'' series, you'll have one of these for sure.
** Dekar in ''VideoGame/LufiaIIRiseOfTheSinistrals''/''VideoGame/LufiaCurseOfTheSinistrals'' takes Idura's mention of a "nameless" master to mean that Idura's master ''literally'' has no name. After effortlessly dispatching Idura's summoned monsters, Dekar then misinterprets Idura's parting words.
---> "Pay, huh? Pay is what you do when you buy something. You've got nothing I want!"
---> "I could really use a new coat. Unless you had another gift in mind."
*** In ''VideoGame/LufiaTheRuinsOfLore'', the heroes encounter Dekar in a casino, having gambled away all of his money and offering his signature Dekar Blade as a wager. When scolded by a friend, Dekar insists that he was just having bad luck and that he's not bad at anything.
** Wain in ''VideoGame/LufiaTheLegendReturns'' gets his moment early in the game. When a young girl is trapped inside of a burning house, [[ChronicHeroSyndrome Wain immediately rushes in to save her]]. When Seena heals his injuries and asks him what he would have done if she couldn't have healed him, Wain responds by saying that she could, so that wasn't a problem.
*** Deckard [[{{Expy}} (the similarity is intentional)]] has his moment when he prepares to drive his ship through the pirate ship the heroes are escaping from. When Wain attempts to tell them that they aren't pirates, Deckard responds by saying [[InsaneTrollLogic that anyone on a pirate ship must be a pirate]]. [[StrangeMindsThinkAlike Wain then remarks that Deckard has a point.]]
* ''VideoGame/MadFather'': [[HerrDoctor Alfred Drevis]] is introduced to the player working in his mysterious basement in the dead of night, with a bloody smear on his lab coat and horrific screams coming from the lab itself. [[spoiler:This is also a more subtle one for Aya; note that upon hearing the screams, [[LikeFatherLikeSon she pauses for half a second before continuing to walk away]]]].
* ''VideoGame/MassEffect2'' loves to not outrightly reveal [[RagtagBunchOfMisfits the major characters,]] but rather all you are given is a name and a very vague description of the character's skill or occupation. As you are on your way to find them, you will have several encounters with people who will give you a few more pieces of information about the person you seek, and each time the mental image you get becomes more and more outrageous and horrifying. Then comes the BigEntrance, which usually even much more badass than anything you would have imagined.
** Thane Krios' first appearance has him show up in the middle of a conversation, breaking necks and coldly shooting his target -- before bowing his head in prayer. Shepard asks him why he's praying for a monster (the target in question was a ''horrifically'' BadBoss), and he replies that [[TheAtoner he's praying for himself.]]
** Grunt is introduced by bursting out of his tank, demanding some kind of purpose, [[SmarterThanYouLook with surprising eloquence]], even giving himself his own name, finding it fitting for a warrior currently without a purpose. When he backs down, he notices that Shepard has had a gun to Grunt's chest the whole conversation, and he just laughs. That's Grunt right there. It also shows the [[UndyingLoyalty enormous amount of respect]] he has for Shepard from the very beginning. It establishes that he WILL follow Shepard into Hell itself.
** Urdnot Wrex in the first game shows up for the first time making a series of {{Badass Boast}}s to a Krogan bouncer in Chora's Den. If you happen to miss that scene, you meet him at C-Sec headquarters after he's been detained for making the aforementioned boasts. To make up for the player having missed the scene, he makes another series of Badass Boasts to the officers instead.
** Tali'Zorah nar Rayyah is introduced in the first game trying to get a direct meeting with the Shadow Broker, then blowing up the thugs who ambush her at the meeting site, establishing that she is not only somewhat naive about the workings of the galaxy but that if you mess with her [[BewareTheNiceOnes you will]] ''[[StuffBlowingUp explode]]''.
** [[AdventurerArchaeologist Dr. Liara T'Soni]] is introduced in the first game after having accidentally gotten herself into a stasis field that the Geth can't figure out a way past, which foreshadows both her [[GameBreaker raw power]] and the fact that she's in way over her head.
*** She also gets a second EstablishingCharacterMoment in the second game, [[MeaningfulEcho using a line]] from Benezia in the first game to establish just how much she's changed in the two years between games before [[NotSoStoic letting her mask drop entirely]] for a moment to indicate that she's still the same old Liara underneath it all.
** CowboyCop Garrus Vakarian is introduced in the first game complaining to DaChief about how the regulations are getting in the way of him arresting Saren. If that wasn't enough, he gets another Establishing Character Moment a few minutes later, when Fist's thugs try to hold Dr. Michel hostage. He pops out of the other side of the room and deals a clean [[BoomHeadshot headshot]] to the thug holding Michel. Shepard can then either compliment his aim or [[WhatTheHellHero call him out for putting the doctor in danger if he missed]].
*** In the second game, you join an alliance of three badass mercenary bands who try to take out Archangel, a lone wolf vigilante who has been cornered in a building and killed dozens of mercenaries who had tried to get at him for the last few days, to the point where the mercenaries are bringing in battle robots the size of small mechs and a heavily armored gunship to try to take him down. [[spoiler: In case you're wondering, Archangel is none other than Garrus]].
** Though she appears twice beforehand and is heard over loudspeaker and in a few video clips, Miranda Lawson's first real introduction is when Wilson opens the door to the room she's been hiding in, [[spoiler:only for Miranda to shoot him in the head with a sarcastic quip, insisting that he's a traitor, and ignoring all of Shepard's counterarguments and stating "I'm always right."]] Quickly establishing everything you need to know about her. [[HiddenDepths Or not,]] depending on your point of view. It certainly tells you everything you need to know about [[WellIntentionedExtremist Cerberus]], [[ContinuityLockout if you haven't played the first game.]] If you read the Shadow Broker dossiers you acquire after completing ''Lair of the Shadow Broker'', [[spoiler:it confirms Wilson really was a traitor and Miranda was right.]]
** When buying [[BaldOfEvil Jack]] from a private high-security prison ship, you can talk with one of the prisoners who begs you to free him as well and take him with you. But when he hears that you've come for Jack, he decides he rather stays in the safety of his cell. We then have a shot of Jack's prison cell opening, to reveal (instead of the giant hulking brute earlier dialogue was gearing you up to expect) a young woman, who promptly starts screaming in rage, tears open her restraints, and rips apart three [[HumongousMecha YMIR mechs]] with her bare hands. The rest of the mission is chasing her through the wreckage left behind by her rampage through the prison ship.
** [[KnightErrant Samara]] has a short fight (in which she utterly dominates the poor Eclipse merc) finishing with a precise NeckSnap and a good deal of DissonantSerenity, before establishing just how strict her code is and how she works with any possible loopholes to advance the greater good.
** On the derelict reaper, you first hear signs of a lone sniper taking on the husks all by himself. Later Legion is introduced [[ColdSniper sniping a group of husks]] that try to sneak up on Shepard and saying his/her name, establishing his combat specialty, the fact that he is different from other geth (as he can talk), and his obsession with Shepard quickly and efficiently with the shot of the N7 armour he used to patch himself. His first full-body shot also is accompanied by one of the game's moments of Crowning Music of Awesome, that is just short of being pretentious.
*** Furthermore, upon spotting Shepard alive and well, the audience witnesses Legion do a clear double-take and raise one of his eye-flaps in an approximation of a FascinatingEyebrow, demonstrating a range of expressions that come off as far more "[[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman human]]" that other Geth previously encountered, who were inscrutably robotic in almost every way.
** From what you hear about Mordin Solus, he appears to be a completely psychotic butcher who slaughters the local gangs by the dozens with both weapons and science, but also runs a free clinic for the poor. When you finally meet him, it turns out that the stories were not exactly wrong, but he is nothing like anything you would have expected.
** Shepard's reintroduction cements their character direction and progression throughout the sequels. S/he starts [=ME2=] with the ''Normandy'' exploding around them, refusing to leave until they rescue everyone they possibly can, are killed in the attempt, is resurrected and dropped right back into the fray... then picks up a gun and goes straight back to work. Not even death itself can stop Shepard from being a force of nature.
** Joker first appears at the beginning of the first game making a near-perfect mass relay jump, then griping about not getting the recognition he deserves, demonstrating his great ability and his justifiable arrogance.
** Ashley gets two in the first game; first, you see a moment of shocked horror as she sees what the geth are doing to the civilians on Eden Prime before [[TheDeterminator she gets back up and gets right back to shooting]], then her first proper conversation as a party member is questioning Shepard's decision to let [[FantasticRacism alien nationals]] to have free-reign to roam around their top-secret military warship.
* From ''VideoGame/MassEffectAndromeda'':
** Peebee first appears when Ryder's about to touch a Remnant pillar, screaming at them to stop, before tackling them to the ground, where she smirks at them... before realising Ryder's teammates are pointing guns at her (and she'll quip if Ryder takes the opportunity to shove her off). Then, after a few seconds of conversation, she sees an [[AttackDrone Observer]] starting up, mutters a quick "aw, crap", and shoots it. Helps to establish that Peebee is an AdventureArchaeologist, flirty, and her grasp of personal space.
** Nakmor Drack is heard before he appears: Screaming, just as a Wraith is tossed through a window. Then Drack loots the corpse for a tooth, sees Ryder, and gets in their face. What happens next depends on who's with Ryder at the time: If it's the humans only, Drack is utterly unimpressed, telling Ryder "you're human, you spoil" (as in rotting meat). If Vetra's in the party, she'll get him to back down, remarking that if Ryder knows Vetra, they're alright. All showing that Drack is old, hard, and (assuming the Vetra scene happens), not your typical krogan.
** An NPC example, with Nakmor Vorn. Having been heard throughout Drack's loyalty mission, once Ryder catches up to him, we see Vorn. He faceplants trying to charge out of a container he'd gotten locked into by smugglers, and immediately after doing so gives a cheerful "hi, guys". In doing so, the audience gets a good look at Vorn, and we see he's ''tiny'' compared to most krogan, helping to sell the image of him being as much of a dork as a krogan can be.
* ''VideoGame/MaxPayne3'': The first thing you see the UFE do onscreen is execute downed gangsters in cold blood rather than trying to secure them or call for paramedics, which considering that they're supposed to be ''cops'' is a [[PoliceBrutality very bad sign]]. [[spoiler:It comes as little surprise later on that they're in on the big organ-harvesting conspiracy against the poor of São Paulo.]]
* Zero of ''VideoGame/MegaManX'' establishes himself as a badass on his first appearance during the prologue stage when, after X [[HopelessBossFight is completely incapable of damaging Vile's mech and is about to be finished off]], Zero blows the mech's arm off with one shot.
* ''VideoGame/MegaManZX Advent'':
** Ashe's introduction scene/stage shows her credentials as an ActionGirl ''before'' becoming Mega Man Model A, and how far she'll go to get what she wants. She ''jumps off the side of an airship'' and lands unscathed after ''at least'' a kilometer's fall, for starters, fights her way through a force of mavericks and a ''boss'' with a simple blaster pistol, you know, the kind that only {{Red Shirt}}s in the series would use, and the series' resident PsychoForHire is the only one who manages to stop her. Then it's implied that she survived a ''multi-kilometer fall'' after that. No, she's not a robot, she's ''human''. ''[[Awesome/MegaManZX Oh, man]]''.
** All of the Mega Men in ''Advent'' have nice moments as well. They only consist of standing there and talking, but they explain who they are, what they want, how they are going to get it, and why they really do not like you.
* Every ''VideoGame/MetalGear'' boss (starting about at ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid'') gets one of these. Sometimes it's as late as right before you fight them. Sometimes, [[SubvertedTrope they get another one after you win, or they don't get one at all]].
** Liquid Snake probably gets the most notable one, establishing him as someone you don't want to mess with. The first thing you see him do is prepare to fly a Hind-D, despite the snowstorm currently raging over the base which your support team notes only a crazy person would willingly fly a helicopter in, in response to a pair of F-16s being scrambled towards the base.[[labelnote:*]]It also, in hindsight, acts one for Colonel Campbell's actions in this game -- Liquid Snake knows about the F-16 sortie before Solid Snake/the player does.[[/labelnote]] Not fifteen minutes later, you're informed of how the flight went -- Liquid ''managed to shoot them down anyway''.
* The first sign that the Boss is [[InexplicablyAwesome thoroughly awesome]] in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid3SnakeEater'' is when she can tell that Snake has lost weight just by the sound of his voice.
* ''Franchise/{{Metroid}}'':
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39gX7GpYf0Q infamously chilling close-up of SA-X's face]] in ''VideoGame/MetroidFusion'' does well to convince the player that they should steer clear of this foe.
** Raven Beak's EarlyBirdCameo in ''VideoGame/MetroidSamusReturns'' shows him leading a surprise genocide of the Thoha Chozo, establishing he is not benevolent like the Chozo seen so far. In his proper appearance in ''VideoGame/MetroidDread'', the first thing he does is wipe the floor with Samus easily, only suffering a crack in his helmet, and establishing himself as a warrior superior to Samus in nearly every way.
* ''VideoGame/ModernWarfare'' makes sure we know where each of the primary villains sit.
** Imran Zakhaev is introduced at the same time as Khaled al-Asad at President al-Fulani's execution. However, the scene makes the relationship between the two quite clear with a remarkably subtle gesture: when al-Asad appears, Zakhaev points a pistol at him, in the middle of a courtyard filled with al-Asad's soldiers -- and ''al-Asad'' is the one who stops in his tracks, obviously surprised and worried. ''Then'' Zakhaev hands him the gun, and al-Asad executes al-Fulani, establishing who is in charge, and who is the subordinate.
** Vladimir Makarov in the second game has an ''entire mission'' serve as his establishing character moment. It starts with him and his cronies gunning down an airport (and you have to follow and help him). It ends with Makarov casually turning and shooting you in the head, revealing he knew you were a spy the whole time. And he ''gets worse'' from there.
* In ''VideoGame/NancyDrew: The Curse of Blackmoor Manor'', you first hear Jane eagerly talking to her tutor about how excited she is to have a stranger (you) visiting the castle, and asking if they can play a game. We learn Jane's favourite hobby from this, and that she is lonely and easily bored.
* Your first meeting with [[TheMole Desther]] and [[WideEyedIdealist Fenthick]] in ''VideoGame/NeverwinterNights'' quickly and clearly sums up the two, with Desther snapping at you for your incompetence at showing up too late to save the creatures and Fenthick apologizing for Desther's behavior and making excuses.
** Nathyrra's collected and somewhat amused attitude is cemented from her very first words of dialogue in Hordes of the Underdark.
** The collection of fan-made modules isn't immune to this either. ''Tales of Arterra'' introduces Persey with a scene in a brothel that underlines her inability to think of herself as a person. [[PrincessClassic Evanine]] is introduced in a temple in the grips of a deep bout of depression that can only be broken by a gift of flowers and a silly remark, foreshadowing just how much of an effect kindness can have on her. [[BloodKnight Montador]] starts out being belligerent.
*** ''VideoGame/ADanceWithRogues'' introduces Vico with a rape scene, typical of [[TokenEvilTeammate his character]], but gives him a PetTheDog moment right afterwards to show that he isn't that far gone. [[TheHeart Anden]] is introduced when you break him out of a cell in the middle of a forest, establishing his role as the DistressedDude. [[ThePollyanna Pia]] is introduced when she has to use the Princess as part of a test, then feels really bad about it afterwards. [[OurDwarvesAreAllTheSame Gemli]] challenges you to a drinking contest.
*** ''VideoGame/TheBastardOfKosigan'' actually subverts this with Alex, given her character role and her introduction scene you would expect her to be a DamselInDistress but she turns out to be [[spoiler:the MagnificentBastard in charge of the whole plot that has been mystifying the character since Cologne]].
* ''VideoGame/NeverwinterNights2'' has many of these.
** Neeshka is introduced snapping at a band of guards to display her temper.
** [[BoisterousBruiser Khelgar]] is introduced getting himself into a fight just for fun. And dragging you along.
** Elanee is introduced to the player character when she jumps into a fight despite orders to the contrary [[NeutralGood because it is the right thing to do]]. The first cutscenes she appears in show her [[StalkerWithACrush surreptitiously observing the player character]].
** [[FieryRedhead Qara]] is introduced getting into an argument with a pair of apprentice wizards and (depending on your actions) maybe even starting a fight.
** [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Grobnar]] is introduced singing a rather silly song to a bush and then seizing on the slightest excuse to tell a long story about a [[NoodleImplements spring-mounted shield and a codpiece]].
** In Mask of the Betrayer, Safiya has a rather tender scene as her EstablishingCharacterMoment, foreshadowing the person you find under her businesslike shell. Gann has a rather comic scene of banter and wordplay, playing up his connection to the spirit world.
*** Kaelyn is introduced examining carvings in the temple of Myrkul, establishing her obsession with re-launching the Betrayer's Crusade.
*** Okku is introduced sticking to his duty, regardless of the cost.
* ''VideoGame/TheNewOrderLastDaysOfEurope:'' If you want a look at how terrible this particular timeline can get, and especially how utterly malignant Himmler's Burgundy is, just play it for a few minutes and have a look at the very early event "From Cradle to Grave". How repulsive is the Burgundian System? Why, repulsive enough that [[spoiler:a mother is forced to name her newborn child "only for paperwork purposes", without ever seeing him, but ''after'' being told he had been euthanised but a minute ago because he had a few "mongoloid" traits]], all told from the [[spoiler:mother]]'s perspective. More than one player's been known for quitting the match right then and there.
* ''VideoGame/{{Nihilumbra}}'': [[spoiler:Assuming you're going through the levels in order, Void Mode introduces itself by plopping a deadly Crawlaggar right in front of your face. You have approximately four seconds to dig out your Brown color and latch onto the wall out of his reach before he eats you. And it only goes downhill from there.]]
* ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'':
** Rachel from the Xbox remake appears staring down a fiend larger than herself and {{One Hit Kill}}ing it. This particular type of fiend is one that remains annoying even with later health and weapon upgrades. CutscenePowerToTheMax or not, it nicely makes her out to be some badass ActionGirl...so it's funny how Ryu ends up having to save her repeatedly, eh? From the same title, Gamov shows himself by speaking up from a hitherto unseen corner, making some cryptic comments and then showing a capacity for OffscreenTeleportation that leaves our {{Ninja}} protagonist befuddled, clearly setting up his MysteriousWatcher role.
** [[spoiler:Murai's]] words at the end of the prologue mentioning how it's a shame the Black Dragon Blade's power is sealed away by Ryu's clan rather than being used [[spoiler:foreshadow that he is the true BigBad of the game.]]
* ''VideoGame/NoMoreHeroes''
** Travis Touchdown is riding the Schpeltiger towards Death Metal's mansion, ramming his motorcycle through the giant wooden doors outside, crashes into his fountain, jumps off, lands, and delivers a PrecisionFStrike as the two guards behind him [[HighPressureBlood explode into geysers of blood.]]
** Destroyman [[FauxAffablyEvil initially]] comes off as fairly polite and unassuming despite standing in an empty room absolutely full of bloody corpses, but ''immediately'' tries to kill Travis after asking him to [[NoPeekingRequest turn around and let him change into his costume]], giving a good indicator as to his [[AxCrazy murderous personality]] and willingness to [[CombatPragmatist do anything to win]].
** In her first thirty seconds, [[AxCrazy Bad Girl]] kills five gimps with a [[BatterUp baseball bat]] while cheering and laughing about it, [[LadySwearsALot swears like a sailor]], [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl gets a beer out of a fridge filled only with beer cans]], and downs said beer in only a few seconds.
* ''VideoGame/OctopathTravelerII'': Unlike the previous game, you meet the other travelers after their first chapter (or second, in Osvald's case) rather than during it, meaning that they each get a unique recruitment scene to establish their personalities to the player:
** Ochette immediately talks about food, [[BigEater more concerned with having a meal than the quest she's about to set off on]].
** Castti is treating a patient, [[TheMedic firmly establishing her occupation and helpful nature]].
** The characters protect the dog Throné befriended, which she thanks you for, revealing her softer side before she segues into telling you [[AntiHero she's hunting two people down]].
** The characters find Osvald collapsed outside of town, hinting at his difficult circumstances, with his dialogue indicating that [[AloofAlly he's joining you out of pragmatism and as such doesn't intend to pry into your affairs]].
** Partitio uniquely has dialogue tailored to whoever your starting traveler is, [[TheFriendlyTexan pointing to him being one of the most charismatic and social]] of the main characters (who's also happy to talk at length about his dreams at first encounter).
** The characters locate Agnea's purse with all her savings that she dropped, marking her as a CuteClumsyGirl.
** The characters help Temenos drive off some heretics, establishing that [[BunnyEarsLawyer he has none of the gentle or soft-hearted nature one might normally expect from a cleric of the church]].
** Hikari is protecting civilians from ruffian soldiers, [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething as someone who seeks to maintain peace amidst the war-torn Hinoeuma]].
* In ''VideoGame/Persona2'', characters are introduced with short blurbs which establish basic details of their character that the protagonists might be expected to know. What they do next generally establishes anything else you need to know going forwards:
** In Lisa's first scene, she rather enthusiastically tries to get Ms Saeko to give her a moment with Tatsuya, who starts panic-flailing the moment he sees her. When she gets her moment, she berates him about wearing the cursed school emblem and then encourages him to go pick a fight with the rival school's resident gang boss. Not that he needed it, though...
** Eikichi is initially described as a "narcissist" by his introductory blurb. He rapidly establishes himself as being TheDitz and obsessed with his reputation and that of his gang, which causes him to try to pressure Tatsuya into joining his band. Then Lisa makes the mistake of taunting him, causing everyone in the scene to flip out: the gang try to calm Eikichi down and hold him back, and Eikichi starts letting off a massive aura of power before summoning his Persona to beat the crap out of Lisa and Tatsuya.
** Maya's general personality is established when Yukino gives her a set of pink handguns, which she declares to be "cute" and [[TooDumbToLive then starts firing in all directions to test them.]]
** Joker's establishing moment is when he appears out of nowhere and steals the souls of Eikichi's gang without a second thought, before subjecting the party to a CurbStompBattle of brutal proportions. The one attempt at an attack you make does zero damage, and ''his'' only attack is very nearly fatal. This incident makes the party band together because if they don't cooperate despite their differences, they will stand zero chance against him.
* A few in ''VideoGame/Persona3'':
** The audience is first introduced to the [[HeroicMime silent]] protagonist [[HeadphonesEqualIsolation blaring music in his headphones]] (and being visibly dismayed when his [=MP3=] player stops working not long after) as he travels to his destination, [[IneffectualLoner ignoring most of what's going on around him]]. His hands are kept in his pockets most of the time, showing off his {{Character Tic|s}}.
** Yukari Takeba is first seen in the opening cutscene, putting a gun to her head [[BungledSuicide before dropping it, crying]]. While it's learned shortly thereafter [[ItMakesSenseInContext she was actually trying to summon her Persona]] and couldn't go through with it due to the stress of pulling the trigger of a gun-like object against her head, the obvious symbolism is still there.
** Junpei Iori is met by the protagonist (and the audience) on the first day of school, where he gives a friendly "S'up dude!" and cheerfully introduces himself. Not long after, when Junpei joins the party as a Persona-user, he mentions he was found "[[HeroicWannabe cryin' like a baby at the convenience store]]" surrounded by monsters shortly after awakening to his Persona.
*** On said first day of school, Yukari, already familiar with Junpei, mentions that he'll "talk to anyone if they'll listen" while Junpei defends himself, saying he was only trying to be friendly. This sets up the argumentative dynamic the two will have for the rest of the game.
* While the cast of ''VideoGame/Persona4'' often subverts what people might expect out of them from a first impression, sometimes their introductions give an idea of what they're like.
** Yosuke is first shown having a bike accident and soon gets [[GroinAttack kicked in the crotch]] for accidentally breaking Chie's DVD, showcasing that he [[ButtMonkey has terrible luck]].
** The main character's homeroom teacher, Kinshiro "King Moron" Morooka, establishes himself by denouncing the player as a loser because he's from the city, showing him to be an abrasive JerkAss. The fact that his students grumble about him, and are shocked if the player chooses to intentionally get on his bad side saying "You calling me a loser?" indicates how much he's disliked.
** Noriko Kashiwagi, King Moron's colleague [[spoiler:and replacement after he is murdered]], establishes herself as an even bigger JerkAss by badmouthing the IdolSinger Rise, purely out of jealousy.
* In ''VideoGame/PersonaQShadowOfTheLabyrinth'', the members of the team you didn't pick are first introduced in a BigDamnHeroes moment saving your skin from an army of Shadows. After the boss is dead, everyone gets to individually introduce themselves.
** Misturu takes the lead and explains who they are and how they ended up in the labyrinth, and offers to tell more at a later time, showing her calm TeamMom personality.
** The P3 Hero lets Mitsuru introduce him and says very little, perfectly displaying his apathetic, [[TheQuietOne quiet]] nature.
** Akihiko introduces himself as the captain of the Gekkoukan High boxing team and states that he really likes protein. This tells you [[CloudCuckoolander everything you need]] [[DumbMuscle to know about]] [[{{Flanderization}} what's happened to him]] since the original ''VideoGame/Persona3''.
** Shinjiro explains that he is technically a third year, but that he is taking time off from school and is only helping SEES for his own reasons. When Rise prods for more info, he brusquely brushes her off.
** Yukari reveals that she is in the archery club. When she stumbles, Junpei wastes no time taking a potshot at her, highlighting [[VitriolicBestBuds their argumentative nature]]. She then reacts negatively to Teddie trying to hit on her [[CasanovaWannabe (but then, who doesn't?)]].
** Junpei, after the above, claims to be a peace-loving hero, showing his HeroicWannabe tendencies.
** Fuuka stutters throughout her intro, showing her ShrinkingViolet personality.
** Aigis, in her robotic monotone, states that [[StalkerWithoutACrush she must always be with the P3 Hero]].
** After Ken introduces himself, Chie accidentally presses his BerserkButton and showcases his [[AdorablyPrecociousChild need to be treated as mature]].
** Koromaru happily allows Chie and Rise to play with him. However, [[SitcomArchnemesis Kanji]] gets a no-no.
** Margaret explains how they came to be in the labyrinth, admits that she was the one who forced the Investigation Team to do a SuperSentaiStance, and jokingly refers to them as her servants. Mysterious, but with an odd sense of humor.
** The ''P4'' Hero simply states his name and shows his calm, collected StraightMan nature in contrast to the rest of his team, but with the right dialogue prompt, he can show that he is NotSoAboveItAll.
** Yosuke explains that he is [[TheLancer the P4 Hero's partner]]. He pokes fun at his teammates throughout their intros, showing his JerkWithAHeartOfGold tendencies.
** Chie stumbles over her intro, causing Yosuke to mock her. She then threatens to kick his face in, highlighting her more combative personality and [[VitriolicBestBuds their similar argumentative nature]] to Junpei and Yukari, something that Fuuka does not miss.
** Yukiko quietly introduces herself, revealing her prim and proper personality.
** Rise shows her cheerful and energetic nature.
** Kanji also stumbles a bit, and Yosuke pokes fun at his [[RealMenWearPink less manly hobbies]], hitting his BerserkButton.
** Naoto calmly introduces herself, showing her rationality, but when Ken accidentally touches on her feminine insecurities, she stumbles.
** Teddie dramatically proclaims himself to be the "beloved and adorable" mascot of Junes, showing his narcissistic tendencies, pops out of his bear costume, and [[PungeonMaster makes a terrible bear pun]].
** Marie gets very touchy when Margaret takes a jab at her poetry, highlighting her {{Tsundere}} personality.
** On a group-wide level, the shot introducing each group on the other's paths says a lot about them. The members of S.E.E.S. stand side by side, Evokers at the ready, while the Investigation Team does [=JoJo's=] poses, establishing the former as a disciplined organization with an established hierarchy, while the latter is a more loosely organized bunch of TrueCompanions.
* ''VideoGame/Persona5'':
** The protagonist is introduced jumping across rafters in a casino and drawing the attention of everyone present before making a break for it, dispatching Shadows with style along the way. And then the chase ends with him jumping out a stained glass window while his teammates comment over the comms on how much of a showoff he is, like he does it all the time.
** Ryuji is introduced angrily yelling at his school's [=PE=] teacher as he drives off before turning to the protagonist, not realizing that he's a transfer student and that he doesn't actually know who Kamoshida is until the Protagonist's confusion tips him off, establishing him as loud, reckless, tactless and somewhat stupid all at once.
** Masayoshi Shido is introduced shoving Ryuji and the Protagonist out of the way to get on an elevator while everyone else backs away apprehensively. When Ryuji objects, he condescendingly remarks that he's in a daycare. And this is coupled with flashbacks that confirm that he's the guy responsible for the Protagonist's probation. All this lets you know instantly that this guy is bad news.
** Yusuke is introduced trying to ask Anne to model for an art piece. However, it comes off to the others like he's stalking her and he doesn't see the implications until it's pointed out to him, hinting that he [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} marches to a different beat than everyone else]].
** Even before we discover the full extent of his crimes, Kamoshida is seen casually gloating about [[ItsAllAboutMe how his volleyball team is the only thing putting the school on the map]] while Kawakami agrees with him.
* In ''VideoGame/PillarsOfEternity'', many of your potential companions get such introductions when you first meet them.
** [[CosmicPlaything Aloth]] is switching between trying to talk his way out of a fight with a bunch of local roughs in a nervous, refined accent, and randomly insulting them in a sharp Scottish-esque brogue. It's blatantly clear he's trying to hide something, but he's doing a terrible job of it; the details are revealed only later.
** [[SadClown Edér]] is smoking a pipe, looking up at a tree full of hanged corpses. He answers the Watcher's questions helpfully, and [[GallowsHumor cracks jokes about the tree even as he notes he's likely to get hung up there himself soon]].
** [[PoliticallyIncorrectHero Durance]] is seen [[LargeHam hamtastically]] muttering bizarre things to himself by a statue to Magran. When spoken to, he recognized the Watcher for what they are and dials up the ham. In a swarm of religious metaphors equally poetic and disgustingly crude, he explains himself and offers to follow and serve the Watcher in order to see how they handle the upcoming tests and trials.
** [[WideEyedIdealist Kana Rua]] greets the Watcher jovially, instantly trusting them with no evidence, and muses about Caed Nua's history, about which he proves fairly knowledgable. He also very casually mentions the assassins trying to kill him, noting he's made some efforts to avoid killing them despite their clear desire to murder him.
** [[CreepyGood Grieving Mother]] appears to be just another peasant woman until the Watcher looks closely and sees past her PerceptionFilter.
** [[EruditeStoner Zahua]] from ''The White March'' is found meditating in a barrel of rotting fish guts. He happily explains that meditating in a barrel of rotting fish guts is a perfectly reasonable part of his WarriorMonk training. And that another part of his training is the powerful psychedelic drugs he's been tripping on for the entire conversation.
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}''
** Wes of ''VideoGame/PokemonColosseum'' has the best introduction of any character in the series, handheld or not -- he ''blows up a criminal hideout with dynamite''. As the only non-KidHero playable, he already stood out, but it was that moment that marked him as one of the best human badasses in the series.
** Your rival in ''VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue'' has this moment when you are choosing your starter. Not only is he impatient and wants to take his first (which he actually does in ''Yellow''), he takes advantage of getting to choose second by [[{{Jerkass}} choosing the one that has the advantage over your own and immediately challenges you to a battle]].
** Your rival from ''VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver'' has his personality (as in, he's [[{{Jerkass}} a massive asshole]]) laid out pretty clear when it's revealed he stole his starter Pokémon from Professor Elm. Should you notice and talk to him when going to pick up your own starter, after revealing that he's eavesdropping on Elm, he outright shoves you away from him.
** Team Plasma as a whole get one in ''VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite'' when you encounter them in the Dreamyard. They had only been seen once before this, and while they were definitely odd, they didn't seem especially malevolent. When you meet two Plasma Grunts in the Dreamyard, they start [[KickTheDog kicking a Munna]] in order to force it to produce Dream Mist, all while trying to claim that they're liberating Pokémon from cruel humans.
** Interestingly enough, the announcement teaser for ''VideoGame/PokemonSwordAndShield'' introduces its starters to the audience this way, whereas stills were the order of the day in past trailers. Scorbunny sprints up a gear, leaps off, then skids to a halt to pose on the grass before bounding off, leaving flaming footprints behind; clearly the energetic one and proud of it. Next, timid Sobble puts out the fire, decloaks, and crawls its way over before being scared off by impish Grookey, who starts off banging a stick, only to leave it behind and climb up a stack to gaze out over the landscape.
** Also in ''Sword & Shield'', Team Yell is introduced causing a ruckus at a hotel in order to intimidate other trainers hoping to partake in the Gym Challenge. It is not until their idol, the stoic Marney, tells them to knock it off that they finally back down.
** ''VideoGame/PokemonSuperMysteryDungeon'' has one for both the partner character and its villain.
*** The first time the player character meets them they are very excited to meet you, pushing you into town before they get a chance to speak. But then all the adults corner them because the kid did something irresponsible and run after them. Say hello to the NaughtyIsGood CheerfulChild.
*** Before the start of the game, Rayquaza, as in ''[[PhysicalGod that]]'' [[OlympusMons Rayquaza]], is seen flying away off the planet from a mysterious force, saying that [[HorrifyingTheHorror it has felt fear for the first time in its life]]. The villain gets an encore at the second half of the game at which [[SuperPersistentPredator it catches a fleeing Latios and Latias flying at the speed of a jet plane]], and [[TakenForGranite turns them into stone]], leaving their bodies to crash land below. Say hello to the HeroKiller.
** In ''VideoGame/PokemonLegendsArceus'', Commander Kamado introduces himself by challenging the player to a fight (as in, an actual physical fight, not a Pokémon battle). He proceeds to toss them across the room no matter what option you choose. This establishes him as tough and intimidating, and the fact that it's meant as a test of the player character's bravery shows that he values courage.
** ''VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet'' begins with Director Clavell showing up in person to your character's house because an administrative error has delayed your enrollment papers from arriving; when your mother comments how odd it is for the school director to visit a new student, his reply is that he's responsible for the entire academy, including its failures. This firmly establishes his [[UsefulNotes/HarrySTruman Truman]]-esque approach to leadership, which in all likelihood earned him the job in the first place as it's eventually revealed that [[spoiler:the entire staff of the academy was replaced a mere 18 months before the start of the games in the wake of a huge bullying scandal and the deputy director's attempts to cover up the incident in which the bullies withdrew from the academy after their former victims banded together to confront them.]]
* The very first thing we see [[ArmiesAreEvil Blackwatch]] do in ''{{VideoGame/Prototype}}'' is save an innocent woman from a horde of Infected...only to kill the woman immediately afterwards. This is arguably meant to show that Blackwatch is willing to kill ''anyone'' with any contact with TheVirus, ''even if they're not even infected themselves.''
** The opening gameplay segment features Alex raging against Blackwatch, carving tanks and men apart, fighting giant infected behemoths, taking out helicopters, then tracking down an officer, slamming him to the ground, and pounding his skull into paste.
** A less violent but just as telling introduction comes in the very first line we ever hear Dana Mercer speak, which is "Let ''go'' of me, you goose-stepping motherfucker!"
* The entire first mission of ''VideoGame/Prototype2'' is one for James Heller. When first we see him, he's sharpening a large combat knife while inside an APC that is patrolling a zone full of viral zombies. After the rest of his squad is wiped out, he proceeds to kill a Hunter with nothing but the knife. Hunters are known to tear apart ''tanks'' with minimal effort. When he catches up to Alex Mercer, he slits the latter's throat. [[HealingFactor It doesn't take,]] but it and the subsequent dogged pursuit firmly show that if anyone can take Alex down, it'll be James and his depleted uranium balls. It's so impressive that Mercer infects him rather than simply eating him.
* ''VideoGame/PuyoPuyo'': In her reintroduction to the series via ''VideoGame/PuyoPuyo7'', Sega establishes [[ButtMonkey their take]] on Draco Centauros by having her be lured to Loch Ness by Dark Arle on the promise of a {{beauty contest}}, then battling the player with AI only matched in ArtificialStupidity by that of [[StarterVillain Skeleton-T]].
* ''VideoGame/RedDeadRedemption'':
** The game subtly does this to John, Ross, and Fordham in the opening cinematic, all without any of them saying a word. Ross rudely pushes a paperboy out of his way. Fordham checks out some women when they pass by. And John refuses to let Ross touch him.
** Bonnie saves an injured John after Bill shot him and left him for dead at Fort Mercer, risking her life for some stranger.
** For all of Luisa's glowing declarations about how Reyes is the savior of Mexico when John meets him for the first time, he doesn't remember Luisa's name despite having led her into believing they will get married and even gleefully offering to whore Luisa off to John. He announces he will write a poem about his "daring escape" that exaggerates how many men he killed and his role in the event (he claims he killed a hundred when it's a little more than a dozen at best and John did most of the work while Reyes was tied up). When Luisa thanks John, Reyes makes a point to push John aside in a slightly jealous manner before serenading Luisa. All of this shows Reyes is a self-centered man who treats women like garbage while expecting their unquestioned devotion and for all his heroic rebel fighting for the people image he cultivates, Reyes is nothing more than a power-hungry wannabe-hero.
* ''Franchise/ResidentEvil'':
** Ada's introduction in the ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2Remake'' has her shooting the [[RaisingTheSteaks zombified dog]] that was attacking Leon, refusing to explain anything about the situation in Raccoon or why she was there, and then leaving. This marks the beginning of Ada's tendency of protecting and saving Leon (or [[PassiveRescue giving him the means to save himself]]) and is the signal to the player that there is more to her than meets the eye and that she [[CrypticallyUnhelpfulAnswer isn't very forthcoming]].
** The titular [[ImplacableMan Nemesis]] from ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil3Nemesis'' drops in out of nowhere, [[OneHitKill kills your only comrade in one hit]], [[ItCanThink speaks its one and only word]], and moves in for the kill, which immediately establishes him as a serious threat unlike any other in the game that is hell-bent on killing you.
--->'''Nemesis: STARS...'''
** ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil3Remake'':
*** Nemesis gets an even more fitting introduction in the remake, where he first appears breaking into Jill's house ''in the opening minutes of the game, shrugs off multiple headshots from Jill's Samurai Edge,'' and spends the entirety of the opening chasing Jill down, only being incapacitated after being shot twice with a rocket launcher -- '''''and he caught the first shot!'''''
*** The game does a great job reminding the player what kind of man Nikolai is in his first appearance. He shows up to shoot Murphy Seeker in the head and dismisses Jill's protest over his act, claiming it was necessary to survive and [[LackOfEmpathy mocking her]] as being too soft and weak.
** ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil4'' emphasizes the [[ItCanThink comparative intelligence of the Las Plagas B.O.W.s]] with a cutscene during the first village battle sequence: Leon scrambles to take shelter inside an open house, and as he looks out the window, he finds the Ganados -- whom the players would treat like the previous games' zombies -- actively communicating with each other, bringing weapons to break down the door, and ladders to enter the second floor. It's the first and last warning that ''[=RE4=]'''s monsters are more intelligent, agile and aggressive than before.
** The Nemesis' SpiritualSuccessor Ustanak has a similar appearance in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6''. He appears out of nowhere, spots Jake (his target), and begins to advance, the normally calm and snarky Sherry [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness loses her nerve and shrieks "RUN"]], and Ustanak is ''[[MadeOfIron completely unphased by a massive explosion]]''. '''[[RunOrDie Start running.]]'''
--->'''Jake''': Son of a '''bitch''', he's strong...!
--->'''Sherry''': '''RUN!!'''
* If you haven't played any of the previous games, ''VideoGame/SaintsRowIV'' makes it clear what kind of character The Boss is (and what kind of game this is going to be) after the initial, fairly generic FPS tutorial mission where they are TheVoiceless. As President of the United States, s/he's installed stripper poles in the White House, appointed Creator/KeithDavid as Vice-President just because, [[TalkToTheFist punches a congressman in the face]], and promptly deals with [[WeComeInPeaceShootToKill first contact]] by also trying to punch a giant alien in the face.
* ''VideoGame/TheSecretWorld'' features quite a few of these, most of them during the opening cutscenes to their first missions:
** [[GentlemanSnarker Richard Sonnac]], sarcastically congratulates you on being able to follow the directions you were given; he then assures you that you haven't "[[TakeThat strayed into some atrocious]] Creator/DanBrown [[TakeThat airport paperback]]".
** Illuminati handler [[ComedicSociopath Kirsten Geary]] introduces herself to new recruits by screaming "I FUCKING LOVE OLD-SCHOOL HIP-HOP! DON'T YOU?" just for the sake of surprising you. The rest of her introduction is spent [[MotorMouth bombarding you with a high-speed stream of instructions]].
--->God, it is ''so'' cute when you new guys think I'm kidding...
** [[IceQueen Bong Cha]], Voice of the Dragon, coldly informs you that you are to speak ''only to her'' - not [[WarriorMonk the Monks]], and certainly not [[CreepyChild the Child]]. Businesslike as always.
** [[MadScientist Dr Zurn]] gets his moment when the player wakes up strapped to an operating table in his lab. Cheerfully informing players that they're about to lose all motor function, he then holds up a syringe and ominously asks "[[Film/MarathonMan Is it safe]]? Nah, I'm just fuckin' with ya." Undoubtedly crazy, [[AffablyEvil surprisingly amiable]], and [[BunnyEarsLawyer undeniably effective]].
** The Pyramidion swings wildly between [[CloudCuckooLander normal dialogue, public service announcements, and context-relevant Internet memes]] - while at the same time making it abundantly clear that ''he's'' [[TheWonka calling the shots around the Labyrinth]].
** [[CoolOldLady Dame Julia]] of the Templars phones you apropos of nothing, and [[TechnologicallyBlindElders spends the first few seconds trying to figure out which button she should press next]] and [[GrumpyOldMan grumbling loudly]] about being given a smartphone by the tech division.
** [[FortuneTeller Madame Roget]] speakes of things to come in a blatantly fake Romany accent, giving every impression of being a bog-standard PhonyPsychic... only for her to drop the accent and refuse all offers of readings for money. ''Then'' she admits to suffering nightmares -- nightmares that just so happen to come true, and the course of the mission proves that she isn't lying.
** Ellis Hill draws a gun on you and demanding that you identify yourself. Once he calms down, he offers a handshake; naturally, [[HandshakeRefusal you're a little hesitant to return it]], but the mechanic approves, noting that handshakes can "give away a lot of a person's soul."
** "The Breakfast Cult" serves as this to the surviving members of [[WizardingSchool Innsmouth Academy]]: Headmaster [[CloudCuckooLander Hayden]] [[NightmareFetishist Montag]] scarcely seems bothered by the mass-slaughter of all other faculty members or the monsters currently besieging his office. Meanwhile, [[HotWitch Ms Annabel Usher]] does her best to [[CloudcuckoolandersMinder keep Montag from drifting too far off track]] while [[TeamMom keeping a concerned eye on Carter]]. Carter herself spends most of the mission intro sitting at the computer, extensively bloodstained and quite clearly shell-shocked.
** On seeing you approaching, Marianne Chen tries to discourage you from getting any closer by bombarding you with regulations and official-sounding declarations... only to collapse into nervous stuttering once it becomes clear that you're not buying any of it.
** The Orochi Caller AKA [[spoiler:Samuel Chandra AKA Samael]] immediately recognizes the player as an intruder in the Blue Mountains Camp, and calls just to let you know that you're in violation of laws. He then offers you to hunt down a runaway test subject, quickly establishing him as [[EvilGenius brilliant]], [[AffablyEvil curiously charming]], and [[TheFaceless suspiciously reluctant to show his face]].
** Freddie Beaumont is first encountered grumbling over the fact that he hasn't quite figured out how to get Excalibur to work for him despite having apparently having Solomon Island in the palm of his hand, all good indications that Beaumont might be a powerful foe, [[SmugSnake but he's nowhere near as clever as he thinks he is]].
** Illuminati sysadmin Leah Cassini makes her character clear before she even starts talking to the player: introduced in the middle of a phone call, she asks, "[[HaveYouTriedRebooting Have you tried turning it off and on?]] No? [[InternetJerk Then please kill yourself]]."
** [[RebelLeader Shani]] of [[LaResistance the Marya]] casually greeting you in "The Siege of al-Merayah." Despite the ongoing gunfights less than twenty feet from her position, she remains [[TheStoic perfectly calm]] while speaking with you and issuing instructions to her soldiers.
** [[MadBomber Nassir the Boom-Boom Man]]'s character is established in the mission intro to "Live Free, Die Hard": having been caught dancing around with an AK-47, he decides to play catch with players using a live hand grenade as the ball.
** Saïd already looks out of place in the war-torn desert even from a distance, being dressed as he is in a crisp white suit and [[FedoraOfAsskicking fedora]]. Then you get a good look at him: he's actually an ancient Egyptian {{Mummy}}, complete with empty eye-sockets. There's a long pause as he considers you, and then [[DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu he takes a photo of you with his phone]], making it clear that he's an avaricious and self-important undead bastard.
** [[AllPowerfulBystander Khalid]] strides out of the desert apropos of absolutely nothing, seemingly communicates with God, points you in the direction of the next quest point, and summons up lightning bolts just to emphasize a point.
** The Oxford occult archaeological team: upon being approached by an angry mummy, Montgomery de la Roche impales it - only for his sword to get stuck in the thing's stomach, forcing [[BollywoodNerd Arun Singh]] to come to his rescue with a HandCannon; he then helps Monty to his feet, showing a surprising amount of intimacy. Monty's the aging GentlemanAdventurer, Arun's the [[TheWormGuy unconventional young scientist]], and they're in love.
** All seven of the Sentinels get a chance to demonstrate their respective characters over the course of their mission set:
*** The Dark Places: [[OnlySaneMan Thutmose]] tries to keep peace between Nefertari and Hemineter]]
*** The Stained Oasis: [[InsufferableGenius Nefertari]] solemnly informs the player of the sacred balance in the universe and advises patience (despite Hemineter's repeated interruptions)
*** The Sad Song: [[TheWoobie Moutemouia]] reflects on how miserable her [[WhoWantsToLiveForever immortal stewardship]] has become, pausing only to reassure Houy that [[ParentalSubstitute she isn't going to abandon him]]
*** Blood and Fire: [[ActionGirl Hemineter]] takes a break from getting on Nefertari's nerves to break the rules and take the fight to the Atenists
*** They Were Beautiful Once: [[CoolBigSister Moutnefert]] immediately begins bombarding you with questions about the world outside the City, clearly wishing she could travel as she once did
*** Halls of Lost Records: [[CheerfulChild Nefertari the Younger]] [[TheBeastMaster speaks with the animals of the City]], gently encouraging them to spy on the Atenists
*** A Farewell To Arms: [[DontFearTheReaper Houy]] attempts to raise an important point with his older siblings, only to end up [[NotNowKid getting overlooked due to his youth and innocence]] and has to spell things out more bluntly.
** Sophie and the Forest God get a dual ECM. Around this time, Harbaburesti is being continuously attacked by ghouls, vampires and werewolves, but the Forest God is still [[TheAlcoholic getting hammered at the bar]], and Sophie is still serving him [[ThePollyanna as cheerfully as ever]] -- though she quickly decides that he's had enough once [[HotSkittyOnWailordAction he starts writing romantic poetry about her]].
** [[DefectorFromDecadence General Hasdatean]] in "In Cold Blood." An aged vampire in military dress, he shows up seemingly out of nowhere when players enter the church, apparently getting ready to drink your blood -- only to back off after being gently rebuked by the priest. He spends the rest of the scene [[VitriolicBestBuds trading friendly banter with Father Lucian]].
--->'''Hasdatean:''' To [[FromASingleCell reform a whampyri body from dust]] is a long and... agonising process.
--->'''Father Lucian:''' So in their next lives, they might strive to be without sin.
--->'''Hasdatean:''' So in their next lives, they learn ''to fear the stake.''
** Most of the Draculesti in "Mortal Sins." [[TeamDad Milosh]] lectures the younger Draculesti on the virtues of discipline and patience, then goes on to have a jovial chat with you about how saving the world is "just another day at the office". [[TheLancer Emilia]] runs the show while Milosh is busy talking to you, occasionally interjecting to make sure he stays on track. Finally, [[TagalongKid Thibor and Luminita]] beg to be allowed to tag along to the next fight, and wander off to sulk when Milosh refuses them.
** [[BigScrewedUpFamily The Dimirs]] get one in "A Necessary Evil." Encountered hacking away at a bloody corpse with a cleaver, [[PsychopathicManchild Silviu Dimir]] takes one look at you and starts shouting for his "Mami,". By contrast, [[EvilMatriarch Olga Dimir]] (AKA Mami) defends the monstrous traditions of the family, and slapping Silviu around when he says too much.
** [[LittleMissAlmighty Emma Smith]] takes center stage in "Contagion" by tending to the Filth-infected [[WickedStepmother Julia Smith]], [[AllLovingHero regarding her with sympathy even after all the abuse the Orochi Handler put her through]]. She'd already made her strength clear through the brief eruption back in "Breached," but this was the first indication that Emma's supernatural gifts were tempered by her ''[[ChildrenAreInnocent kindness]].''
** After pretending to be your [[FauxActionGirl useless secret agent companion]], the Russian Council Operative abruptly stabs you in the back with a syringe, then introduces herself with all the names and atrocities she's been known for throughout history -- concluding with her real name: [[spoiler: ''' ''Lilith.'' ''']] Then, without further ado, she [[WouldHurtAChild breaks a young test subject's neck]], kidnaps Emma, and ''saws your legs off,'' before promptly leaving to the accompaniment of stunned text messages from every faction contact in the game. Arrogant, merciless and powerful.
** [[BeleagueredBureaucrat Arturo Castiglione]] gives every impression of being a dignified, elderly statesman, right up until a rather unfortunate phone call causes him to completely lose his shit.
** [[MouthOfSauron The Black Signal]] AKA [[TomTheDarkLord John]] uses his powers to interrupt Masao Tanaka's emergency broadcast, whispering ominously at viewers and splicing in footage of government forces gunning down civilians. All in all, an EldritchAbomination just used his unspeakable powers for no other reason than [[PsychopathicManchild for trolling]].
** [[LadyOfWar Gozen]] of the Jingu Clan commands the heavily-armed samurai at the diner without even [[TranquilFury raising her voice or leaving her seat]], demonstrates her [[FantasticRacism hatred of demons]].
** [[DirtyOldMan Oni mercenary captain Inbeda]] of the House In Exile is first introduced lounging by the pool in a bathrobe and slippers. For good measure, he follows up his grandiose introduction by inviting players to strip naked and frolic in the pool.
** [[TheDon Daimon Kiyota]] reveals that his lieutenant is actually a spy for Inbeda, and is not only able to frighten the traitor out of trying to assassinate him but ropes him into a game of [[RussianRoulette Fugu Roulette]]. Brilliant, prone to Roaring Twenties-era slang, '''and CrazyIsCool incarnate.'''
* The opening of the original ''VideoGame/ShadowHearts1'' is this for both the villain and the hero. Even after all the details and twists about these two, this scene still correctly encapsulates both characters and the dynamics between them.
** The villain walks through a train car, politely standing aside for an old lady, before heading to the next cabin and turning the guards to a fine red paste, all with a kindly smile never leaving his face.
** The hero is first seen nonchalantly napping on a seat, awaking when the villain walks past him. He follows him, and barges into the cabin when the villain is about to kidnap the damsel. The villain's demonic minion attacks the hero, slicing off his arm, but he catches the minion, crushes its head, and reattaches his arm, sporting a cocky grin.
* The opening scene for ''VideoGame/{{Shenmue}}'' serves as a big one to [[BigBad Lan Di]], cementing him as a cold, mysterious, and ''very'' powerful martial artist to be feared. Breaking into the Hazuki Dojo to steal the mysterious Dragon Mirror, he remains calm and eerily composed as he [[NonchalantDodge gracefully evades]] everything the elder Hazuki throws at him, before taking him down in two kicks. He sends Ryo [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom flying across the room]] with a single palm thrust, and threatens to kill him in front of his own father unless he reveals the mirror's location. After Iwao caves in, Lan Di asks him about a man he killed before granting him [[YouKilledMyFather a warrior's death]], leaving both martial artists lying on the floor with the Dragon Mirror in his hands, [[CurbStompBattle completely unscathed]]. It's no wonder everyone who has heard of him [[TheDreaded wants to steer clear of him]], and ''no one'' believes in Ryo's chances against him in his quest for revenge.
* ''Franchise/ShinMegamiTensei'' games '''love''' this trope, with a healthy side order of WorldOfHam.
** [[MightMakesRight Thor]]? Knocks out a kid with a brutal blow of his hammer and violently leeches his LifeEnergy to empower himself.
** [[GagPenis Mara]]? Spouting {{Double Entendre}}s one after another and ''[[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou ramming the screen]]''.
** [[ThatOneBoss Matador]]? "[[BadassBoast I swear, by my sword and capote, that once again I will prove victorious!]]"
** [[PhysicalGod Demiurge]]? "[[AGodAmI WORSHIP ME]]! [[ThisIsGonnaSuck THE CREATOR OF ALL, UNPARALLELED BY ANY]]!"
*** His full form, [[GodIsEvil YHVH]]? "[[ItsAllAboutMe Praise my name! Witness, bathed in the glory of my countenance! Praise my name!]]"
** [[CreepyChild Ali]][[AliceAllusion ce]]? "[[SignatureMove Will you die for me]]?"
** [[TheDragon Sukuna]]-[[PuppeteerParasite Hikona]]? "The one called Munakata no longer exists..."
* VideoGame/SimonTheSorcerer's very first line (If you don't count the opening credits) is him saying he wants to run his dog Chippy through the dryer cycle because he's bored.
* The very first thing we see Dr. M do in ''VideoGame/Sly3HonorAmongThieves'' is have a pleasant chat with a {{Mook}} about said mook's family, then casually and politely tell him he's never going to see him again because his drink was poisoned for "poor performance". [[MoodWhiplash Then the mook keels over dead]]. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about this FauxAffablyEvil MadScientist, then nothing will.
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'':
** One simple intro establishes Sonic as Sega's MascotWithAttitude. In the original ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1 Sonic the Hedgehog]]'' for the UsefulNotes/SegaGenesis, a black screen fades into the game's logo, and Sonic pops into the logo and does his signature [[GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger finger wag]] at you.
** Knuckles makes his entry in ''VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles'' by knocking Sonic out of his super form, taking all of the Chaos Emeralds Sonic had, laughing at him, and running off.
** Pretty much every story in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' starts with an establishing moment for the current character:
*** Sonic's story starts with him displaying his speed and acrobatics, as well and his carefree, adventure-seeking attitude.
*** Tails' starts with him giving a test run to a byplane he just built, establishing his role as a GadgeteerGenius.
*** Knuckles' starts with him reflecting on his purpose as the guardian of the Master Emerald, and the loneliness this duty brings to his life. Shortly after, he's shown doing his best to protect the Master Emerald and threatening Chaos after this one seemingly shattered it to pieces. This makes it clear that he's a tough-as-nails, [[{{Determinator}} determined]] lone wolf who is completely devoted to his mission, yet regrets being forced to live such a lone life.
*** Amy's starts with her daydreaming and reminiscing about her prior adventures with Sonic, wishing he would come take her away from her boring life, until she bumps into a bird running away from an evil robot and promises to protect it. This establishes her as a tomboyish NiceGirl who longs for Sonic's affection.
*** Big's starts with the lazy cat sleeping peacefully in his hut next to his best friend Froggy.
** ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' has two moments for Shadow the Hedgehog: first, in the Dark Story, when he proceeds to waste a military mech after being released from his prison; then again, in the Hero Story, when he encounters Sonic, evades him using [[VillainTeleportation Chaos Control]], and declaring himself the "UltimateLifeForm''.
* ''VideoGame/SplinterCell'' has a quick and efficient one. The first thing you see on starting a new game is Irving Lambert, your MissionControl, walking down a hallway to a keypad-locked door, punching in the code, and discovering protagonist Sam Fisher broke in ahead of time and is already waiting for him.
-->'''Lambert:''' Sam Fisher. I can't believe you beat me here.\
'''Fisher:''' ''[nonchalant]'' I like to be early. Hello, Colonel.
* In ''VideoGame/StarFox64'', almost immediately after gameplay begins, Slippy [[LeeroyJenkins flies out ahead of everyone else]] and an enemy fighter starts chasing him. This will happen quite often.
* ''Franchise/StarWars'':
** ''VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublic''
*** Mission and Zaalbar's introduction when you first meet them in the bar on Taris; a pair of Rodians are trying to hassle Mission by calling her a "little girl" and threatening her. Mission tells them to get lost, but when it's clear they're going to start a fight, she calls over Zaalbar to even the numbers. Zaalbar protests because [[BigEater he just got some food]]. The Rodians, not wanting a fair fight, much less a fight with a Wookiee, scram. Mission then cheerfully introduces herself to the PlayerCharacter and Carth, freely volunteering any information she has.
*** [[DefrostingIceQueen Bastila]] breaks herself out of her cage before she can be rescued, makes a typically self-righteous boast about being a Jedi, and helps you take down a major mob boss. Then proceeds to berate you for being sloppy, leading to a rather childish argument as to who was doing the actual rescuing. [[spoiler: TheReveal makes this scene much more funny in hindsight.]]
*** [[BloodKnight Canderous]] is introduced intimidating a band of thugs into ponying up payment for the crime boss he's working for. His default outfit also prominently displays the Taung-skull tattoo of a Mandalorian. Once the thugs wisely make their payment, he has a relatively civil and polite conversation with the Player Character, admitting how menial and boring he finds the job.
*** A tip for you. One. Don't bother Calo Nord. Two. Or he will... Three. *POW*
*** Carth talks you through a Sith-infested doomed ship, holds the last escape pod for you, drags your semi-conscious butt out of it, hides you, and nurses you back to health. [[ProperlyParanoid Paranoia]] aside, this is one seriously NiceGuy.
*** Juhani is [[LeaveMeAlone out in the grove]], alone and not ''actively'' causing trouble (though she did make the kath hounds more aggressive to keep others away), but there are a couple Mandalorian corpses nearby to show what happened when someone ''did'' try to hassle her. Get close, and she stuns any party members you have then attacks with a lightsaber. Upon defeat, she can't keep up the Dark Side act for long, lapsing into suicidal depression. She also gets some [[LesYay additional dialogue]] if a female PlayerCharacter is the one trying to talk her out of [[SuicideByCop suicide by Jedi]].
*** HK-47 introduces himself with the VerbalTic and cheerfully tries to get the Player Character to purchase him by boasting of his capabilities in combat and translation, insulting the Ithorian shopkeeper that currently has him, and doing a fair amount of (poor attempts at) lying by omission and equivocation. This is definitely not a harmless protocol droid, and definitely is a walking ball of murderous CrossesTheLineTwice CrazyIsCool.
*** Kreia in the second game appears to be dead but then wakes up in the morgue, identifies your character as a former Jedi just by how you walk, and gives you snarky advice. Needless to say, she's like this the entire game.
** ''VideoGame/JediKnightIIJediOutcast'': Your first encounter with [[BigBad Desann]] is an utterly ''brutal'' HopelessBossFight where poor Kyle gets the absolute hell beaten out of him as Desann criticizes [[HowTheMightyHaveFallen how out-of-practice he is]], establishing that Desann is a NoNonsenseNemesis that you're not even ''close'' to ready to take on.
** ''VideoGame/JediKnightJediAcademy'': Rosh is introduced bugging [[PlayerCharacter Jaden]] with questions and fanboying over getting to meet Luke Skywalker, seemingly establishing him as a dorky but well-meaning HeroWorshipper that will [[TheLancer always have your back]]. [[spoiler:Then midway through the tutorial, [[KickTheDog he hacks a combat droid into attacking you just so he can beat the trial before you]], clueing you in that he's ''[[BitchInSheepsClothing actually]]'' an arrogant and over-competitive GlorySeeker, and [[{{Foreshadowing}} probably not the sort of person who should be undergoing Jedi training]]...]]
* ''Franchise/StreetFighter'':
** M. Bison is established as the final boss of ''VideoGame/StreetFighterII'' because he is the only one with a flamboyant entrance where he throws off his cape.
** So you made it to the final level of ''[[VideoGame/StreetFighterII Super Street Fighter II Turbo: The Ultimate Championship]]'' and are about to thrash M. Bison for the umpteenth time. Then a shadow zooms ahead of you, grabs M. Bison, the screen goes black, blows are landed, screen comes back and M. Bison is laid out by this new challenger. Meet '''AKUMA'''.
* Ike earns himself one in his first appearance in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl'''s Subspace Emissary. You've just seen Marth and Meta Knight fail to stop the Ancient Minister and his bomb. He flies off, thinking he's won. Suddenly from behind you see a BFS slowly rise from behind him as epic music starts to play. Ike then jumps up to catch it for his signature move Aether (he yells "Great Aether" just because it's cooler that way) and easily slices down the bomb the Ancient Minister was carrying, disarming it (becoming the only character ever to do so) and he strikes a pose as the Ancient Minister flies off into the distance.
* How does [[AngelicAbomination Galeem]] introduce himself in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate''? By incinerating the entire fighter roster except for Kirby as well as non-playable characters with his barrage of lasers and [[OmnicidalManiac destroying the entire universe]] to remake it according to his designs of [[OrderIsNotGood order]] and [[LightIsNotGood light]].
* ''VideoGame/TalesOfBerseria'':
** Our {{Anti Hero}}ine Velvet Crowe gets a great one. She escapes from a literal Hell-pit and finds a supply room, cobbles together an outfit from the scraps of other prisoners' clothing that [[{{Stripperiffic}} only just about protects her modesty]] (as if she doesn't care how she looks), takes some rope because it looks useful, and finds an insanely famous and valuable katana named Stormhowl... and in defiance of expectations ''refuses'' to take the CoolSword, calling it worthless.
** Magilou, a self-proclaimed witch who acts in a silly and [[LargeHam over-the-top manner]], is introduced pulling a StealthHiBye on Velvet in the hellish prison, introducing herself in a grandiose manner, and then strolling off without a care.
* ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'': and again! This series is very good about this trope.
** Raine, Genis, Colette, and Lloyd are all introduced in a classroom scene in the very opening. [[IdiotHero Lloyd is sleeping,]] [[ChildProdigy Genis answers all the questions,]] [[CoolTeacher Raine is teaching the class,]] and the subject matter is Colette's [[TheChosenOne role as the Chosen]].
** Kratos saves the rest of the party and takes out a group of mooks with no trouble. He behaves quite [[TheStoic coldly]], although he reacts strangely [[{{Foreshadowing}} when Lloyd reveals his name.]]
** Sheena tries to assassinate Colette...and then immediately [[CuteClumsyGirl falls through a hole in the ground.]]
** Zelos shows up [[TheCasanova surrounded by fangirls]], and immediately starts flirting with Raine and Colette. Colette throws him across the courtyard, and Raine notes that [[HiddenDepths his reactions are much faster than an ordinary human's.]]
** Presea enters carrying a piece of Sacred Wood that [[PintSizedPowerhouse Lloyd and Genis can't even lift]]. She answers every question in a monotonous robot voice, and her equipped weapon is a ''woodcutter's axe''.
** Regal drops [[DynamicEntry right the hell out of nowhere]] and [[CombatPragmatist knocks out Zelos from behind]], all [[WithMyHandsTied with his hands shackled]], warning the team that [[BadassBoast he'll kill the Chosen if they move]], and then [[{{Foreshadowing}} hesitating when Presea lunges at him]].
* Everybody in ''VideoGame/TalesOfVesperia'' gets one upon their introduction:
** Yuri is introduced looking awesome in the Lower Quarter. Within his first few lines, he reveals his Flynncentric inferiority complex, then leaps out the window to go rescue the district while [[DeadpanSnarker snarking]] at his dog.
** Raven, when you first meet him in the castle dungeons, is telling a factually suspect tale to one of the guards, not unlike the false info he tends to feed you. He also helps Yuri out unexpectedly, and the intro even hints at [[spoiler: his connection with the Imperial Knights when Alexei comes to get him out of prison.]]
** Estelle is roaming around the castle looking like your stock helpless Princess...but then she threatens a bunch of guards with a sword and, after Yuri defeats them, tries to whack him over the head with a vase. Estelle in three words -- impulsive, brave, and dorky.
** You find Karol [[CowardlyLion hiding in the bushes]] in the Quoi Woods. He then makes a [[ButtMonkey fool of himself]] by swinging his sword so hard he starts spinning uncontrollably, then collapses and follows Yuri and Estelle pretty much [[TagalongKid against their will.]]
** Rita's first action in the game is to tell everyone to shut up and then hit Karol with a fireball.
** When you first "meet" Judith she's riding a dragon and spearing blastia. When she takes off her armor, she helps Yuri [[BloodKnight start a fistfight in prison]] and has a subsequent skit about her [[TheTease skimpy clothing]].
** And, of course, [[BigDamnHeroes Flynn's]] first action is to rescue you from assassins, with him and Yuri [[BashBrothers effortlessly fighting in perfect sync]]...after which he immediately turns around and [[VitriolicBestBuds starts attacking Yuri.]]
* Same deal with ''VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss'', although the characters are usually ''so'' multifaceted and complex that they need a few scenes to get their essences across.
** Luke is introduced staring out the window of his bedroom. He gets a mysterious headache, [[RoyalBrat sasses a few maids]] and then sits down to dinner with Van and the Duke and Duchess Fabre. During that conversation, he makes it ''abundantly'' clear that he thinks the world revolves around him.
*** Luke gets another one later on when he accidentally murders a guard during the Tartarus invasion. It sends him into minor HeroicBSOD mode and establishes that for all his self-centered behaviour, he is a ReluctantHero who really doesn't like to kill.
** Tear shows up to assassinate Van at Luke's manor, easily taking out all the guards with a [[MusicalAssassin fonic hymn.]] When she and Luke are then teleported miles away from the fight, [[CodeOfHonour she declares that it's her duty to see him safely back.]]
** Anise, like Luke, gets two important moments. One is her first appearance at an inn in Engeve, in which she complains about [[BodyguardCrush Ion running off again.]] Later, on the Tartarus, she immediately becomes MUCH friendlier with Luke when it's revealed that he's got [[GoldDigger money and a title.]]
** [[MemeticBadass Jade]] [[ColonelBadass Curtiss]] gets a suitably epic moment when he interrupts your fight with the Liger Queen, [[CrutchCharacter nukes]] [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill her]] with spells ''way'' more powerful than anything you've seen before, and then [[DeadpanSnarker immediately starts]] [[TheGadfly making fun of Luke and Tear]] once the fight's over.
** Guy is introduced earlier, but his proper establishing moment is when he [[UndyingLoyalty rescues Luke]] from the Tartarus...by leaping off the top of the giant landship, deflecting bullets with his sword, and declaring "Enter the amazing Guy!" with a cheesy grin. A few moments later, he gets a secondary moment when he [[DoesNotLikeWomen panics because Tear tries to shake his hand.]]
** Natalia is encountered at the castle. She begs Luke to remember their ArrangedMarriage, and then immediately [[RoyalBrat tells Guy to stop freaking out because he'll be her servant one day.]]
*** Natalia is actually a perfect example of the importance of first impressions, as this establishing moment quite seriously misrepresents [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure what her character]] [[PoliticallyActivePrincess ends up being]] [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething all about]], but by the time she actually shows her true colours the damage may have already been done.
** Asch shows up, calls Luke a worthless reject, and has [[{{Foreshadowing}} a mysterious headache identical to the one Luke suffered at the beginning of the game.]]
* Invoked intentionally with ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2'' and the "Meet The Team" videos. You can learn everything you need to know about the individual classes by watching them. Most notable is Meet the Pyro, who being TheUnintelligible, was only assumed to be mysterious and a [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin pyromaniac]]. [[spoiler:To the other characters, The Pyro's an OmnicidalManiac, frightening even [[AmbiguousGender his/her/its]] teammates. However, through "Pyrovision," we learn that the Pyro is a schizophrenic that sees the world as a SugarBowl within seconds.]]
* The first cinematic in ''VideoGame/TombRaiderI'', in which Lara reveals herself for the first time to the player by cutting the rope that holds her, tossing off her shawl, drawing her guns, and firing a few shots at the wolves attacking her guide before she hits the ground. In the intro cutscene before that, Natla tires to tempt Lara to take on her job by offering a lot of money, only for Lara to refuse (initially) by saying she "only plays for sport". This shows that Lara will risk life and limb for her own personal gain and thrills over being paid to raid tombs.
** The comic book starts with her being caught trying to escape some Middle Eastern town under a burqa after stealing a necklace. Once she's caught and exposed, she makes a few jaunty quips while escaping in a hail of gunfire with an IndyPloy. But for her butler arriving in a chopper, a bit late, she would've died. Acts like she doesn't need others, but she still does. That's about all you need to know if you haven't played the games.
* ''VideoGame/TransformersWarForCybertron'': Most people know Megatron as a megalomaniac, and as someone not to mess with. In the very first stage, he commands his flagship to ram into a space station, [[BadBoss casually shoots a subordinate decrying the plan]], then as the ship and the station section it crashed into collapses, he simply charges out of the wreckage with two lieutenants and starts massacring Autobot {{Mooks}} left and right while he lets Soundwave organize any survivors strong enough to live.
** Similarly, when you start the Autobot campaign, the first you see of Optimus is him being a {{Big Damn Hero|es}} and saving Bumblebee from a group of Decepticon mooks.
* The Guardian's introduction during the ''intro'' to ''VideoGame/UltimaVII'', where he taunts the Avatar through his computer back at home on Earth and tells you exactly what kind of entity he is.
* Several characters in ''VideoGame/{{Undertale}}'' do this:
** Flowey, an adorable talking flower, pops up to greet you and asks if you're from the surface, then says he will show you how things work underground. [[MoodWhiplash He then flashes a]] NightmareFace [[MoodWhiplash and promptly tries to kill you]], showcasing that for all his cutesy appearance and manner of speech, he's a ruthless [[TheSociopath sociopath]] who knows just how to manipulate you.
** And right after that, [[MamaBear Toriel]] makes her entrance by [[BigDamnHeroes blasting Flowey with fire magic]], rebuking him for attacking a helpless child, then introduces herself and bring you through the Ruins into her home, showing that she's as kind as she is powerful.
** Sans also has one. When you leave the ruins, you are stalked through the woods by a mysterious figure that [[TeleportSpam disappears at random]]. When you reach a dead end, said figure approaches you and asks you in an ominous voice to shake their hand...[[ThePrankster only to reveal he had a whoopee-cushion hidden in his hand]], and then introduces himself as Sans and says while he's ''technically'' meant to capture you, [[LazyBum he can't be bothered]].
** An odd case with [[spoiler: Sans again, this time in his boss fight.]] You may have [[spoiler: met him before]], now things are completely different, as they are [[{{Understatement}} irked]] at you, and show it through [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard cheating, taking the first attack]], [[CombatPragmatist starting with an absurdly strong attack]], and [[SNKBoss generally making your life hell]].
** Papyrus shows up on the scene not long after Sans and quickly demonstrates his HotBlooded LargeHam CloudCuckoolander ManChild tendencies in both his speech to his brother and his animation, along with the fact that his brother's puns drive him up the wall, ''especially'' when he's enjoying them.
** Temmie Village is just ''weird'' from the word go. It starts with the music and gets stranger from there, along with the unusually primitive Temmie sprites, their disjointed dialogue, and the fact that logic seems to apply even less than usual with them. You quickly come to realize that Temmies are strange overall.
** Everything about Undyne painted her as a menacing BlackKnight archetype: cold, serious, and direct in her attempts to kill you. Then when you reach the end of the Waterfall area on a Neutral/Pacifist run, she flips out, removes her helmet, and starts going on a hammy rant like a Shounen hero about how your continued existence is a detriment to monsterkind and how she'll protect them all.
*** In the No Mercy run, [[spoiler: she tanks a hit meant for a child and starts disintegrating. However, she realizes that you're a threat to not just monsters, but the world, and pulls herself together through sheer Determination and puts up a hell of a fight, proving that she's much more of a hero than [[VillainProtagonist you have been]].]]
** The entire final area is an extended one for [[spoiler: Asgore]]. The entire game, you've been warned that he wants your soul in order to break the Barrier and declare war on the humans. However, once you make it to the last area, you find [[spoiler: a home that looks like a monochrome version of Toriel's, which is the first sign that there's something more to Asgore. You then learn about his backstory about how he lost both his birth son and adoptive child, and how he declared war upon the humans in his grief. Then when you finally meet him, you realize that he really is as fluffy and kind as all the other monsters think he is and that he really doesn't want to kill you, as evident by the fact that he attempts to delay your battle with him. However, once you actually start the battle, he ''destroys your Mercy button'' and resigns himself to putting his all into killing you, reminding you that he did indeed kill six children before you.]]
* ''VideoGame/TheWalkingDeadTelltale'':
** The developers state that the reason Clementine was introduced as soon as possible was to show her resourcefulness and ability to be helpful.
** The first thing Larry does in Season 1, Episode 1 is insist that a child in your group has been bitten (when, as far as you know, he's only covered in muck), and demands that he be thrown out or killed.
** David García beating Javier up and calling him irresponsible for something that was out of his control.
* ''VideoGame/WarcraftIII'''s resident bigot Garithos:
-->''"You're late, Prince Kael'thas. I thought you Elves take pride in your punctuality"''.
** The first time we see Jaina in action was when she fought back an ogre by herself. Arthas even tells his men not to help because they'll just get in the way.
* The very first thing you hear Neku say in ''VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou'' is, among other things, "I don't get people. Never have, never will." This sets up his initial antisocial behavior and sets him up to learn ThePowerOfFriendship.
** The bonus chapter "Another Day" tells you exactly [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments what kind of alternate world this is]], when Alternate Neku shouts "Life is great!", and then has to struggle with his "emo urges".
** Beat's impulsive and aggressive nature is emphasized in his first appearance, in which he accuses Neku and Shiki of being Reapers and tries to start a fight with them.
** Sho's first scene involves him showing up late to a meeting, using "affectionate" nicknames on Kitaniji and Konishi, then walking out as soon as he's lost his interest, effectively setting him up as the maverick among the Reapers [[spoiler:and TheStarscream]].
** Joshua is written to get on both Neku and the player's nerves almost immediately, starting with him feeding Neku the answer to an extremely easy puzzle in a very condescending manner and continuing with him making the bare minimum amount of effort in fights (forcing Neku to pull all the weight) before suddenly revealing his flight and BeamSpam abilities (again, in a very insufferable manner.)
* In ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'', when Alliance players get a quest that is supposed to direct them towards the Alliance's main base in the Dragonblight region, they are supposed to deliver a critically important letter that contains the names of traitors and spies that work for the Cult of the Damned. When the player arrives and hands the letter to High Lord Halford Wyrmbane he crumples it and throws it aside, then points towards a bunch of corpses hanging from the arch of the main gate... He had already dealt with all the traitors without even needing the list. That's just how badass the 7th Legion is, of which he is in charge.
** The [[RedOniBlueOni Huojin and Tushi Pandaren]] are introduced with the Tushi practicing their forms and the Houjin sparring against each other.
*** Likewise Aysa of the Tushi is first shown meditating while Ji of the Houjin is introduced fighting Hozen.
** Taran Zhu arrives to deal with a Sha outbreak in the Jade Forest and scolds the soldiers responsible for causing it by bringing war to Pandaria.
** Priscilla Ashvane is introduced rabble-rousing a crowd against the Alliance, ordering Katherine Proudmoore to have Jaina executed, throwing the player (the Alliance emissary) in prison.
* Noah of ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles3'' is introduced giving an introductory {{Infodump}} on the CrapsackWorld that is Aionios. After taking part in a brutal battle against an enemy Colony, Noah stays behind to [[DueToTheDead send off]] all the dead on both sides, staying long after the last transport ship back home has left. This establishes just how much Noah treasures life, even those of his enemies, and how he hates how the world encourages trampling upon it.
* [[MeaningfulName Id]] of ''VideoGame/{{Xenogears}}'' first appears destroying everything in sight in his giant [[LawOfChromaticSuperiority red]] robot, then gets the [[CoolShip Yggdrasil]] dropped on him while he's threatening [[TheLancer Bart]]. Bart and his crew on the ship breathe a sigh of relief, then [[OhCrap the ship's bulkheads start to buckle]] as Id lifts it up into the air with one hand.
--> '''Id:''' That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... [[CatchAndReturn Take it back!]]
* KOS-MOS of ''VideoGame/{{Xenosaga}}'' got herself an incredible entrance by blowing out an enormous metal door and kicking the asses of all the Gnosis that were previously making mincemeat of the people on the Woglinde. In other words, she was a DeusEstMachina.
** Albedo gets his with the infamous ''Ma belle peche'' sequence. He had shown up a few times before, but it was this scene that firmly cemented him as a wild motherfucker.
* The batting cage fight from ''VideoGame/Yakuza1'' and its remake ''VideoGame/YakuzaKiwami'' serves as one for [[EnsembleDarkhorse Goro Majima]]; When Kiryu arrives Majima and his goons step out, with Majima taunting Kiryu to get under his skin. This menace last until an errant pitch nails Majima in the face, at which point Majima starts laughing like he's just heard the best joke in the world. All of his men join in save one guy, whom Majima immediately rounds on and starts wailing on with a baseball bat while ordering him to laugh. Kiryu interrupts and demands to know where [[MacguffinGirl Haruka]] is, which Majima answers she's safe in the next room and Kiryu can have her when they're done with their fight. This establishes Majima as a [[AxCrazy slightly unstable]] BadBoss who still has a sense of honor and is unmotivated by the race for the ten billion yen or revenge, only a good fight with his [[FriendlyEnemy "friend"]] Kiryu-chan.
* It takes most of ''VideoGame/YggdraUnion'' for Gulcasa to finally get one of these, but when he does it's very powerful. In the very short scene in question, a scout arrives to tell him that [[spoiler:his little sister Emilia]] is dead. He accepts the news and dismisses her rather than opting to ShootTheMessenger...and then once she's out of the room, he breaks down crying. Rather than rage against the Royal Army for their role in that character's death, Gulcasa [[ItsAllMyFault blames himself for lacking the power to save her]]. And once he's managed to pull himself together, he goes right back to rallying his men to defend his capital from your attack. Each of these actions [[VideoGame/BlazeUnion has a story behind it]], but simply seeing them for what they are is enough to succinctly explain [[NiceGuy what kind of person Gulcasa is outside of battle]].
* ''VideoGame/YsIAncientYsVanishedOmen'' introduces Dogi by having him suddenly burst through a solid brick wall like the Kool-Aid Man[[spoiler: in order to break Adol out of a jail cell in Darm Tower. Meeting him in Darm Tower is another defining character moment, showing that he's reckless enough to enter an inescapable demonic tower and survive effortlessly long before Adol arrives.]]
