->Our motto is to create animation that is both enjoyable for our viewers and creators. We believe if the creators are not having fun with their work, then it’ll most definitely reflect on their final film as well.

[[http://www.st-trigger.co.jp/ Studio TRIGGER]] (officially "TRIGGER Inc.") is a Japanese {{anime}} studio founded in 2011 by Creator/HiroyukiImaishi and Masahiko Ōtsuka. Prior to this, the duo had spent the previous fifteen years as animators and directors on various Creator/StudioGainax productions; most notably ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' and ''Anime/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt''. In addition, much of the company's founding staff are also former Gainax employees who had worked on these projects, as well as a fair number of ex-Creator/Studio4C staff members who were stationed between [[Creator/TMSEntertainment Telecom]], Gainax, and Creator/KyotoAnimation at the time of its founding.

The studio's first major production was 2013's ''Anime/KillLaKill'', a MagicalGirl series that made their creative mission statement more than clear: all the [[SurrealHumor over-the-top comedy]], kinetic and stylish use of LimitedAnimation, and fun and captivating stories that can border on MindScrew that these creatives brought to you while working at other studios? Prepare to have that [[Film/ThisIsSpinalTap turned up to eleven.]]

Other major works from Studio TRIGGER include the satirical crime webtoon ''WebAnimation/InfernoCop'', the WizardingSchool comedy ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'', the tie-in anime series ''Anime/CyberpunkEdgerunners'', and a {{toku}} [[ContinuityReboot re-imagining]] in ''Anime/SSSSGridman''. In July 2018, TRIGGER launched their own [[https://www.patreon.com/studioTRIGGER Patreon]], with the money serving as additional funding for their various animation projects and production of merchandise.

In 2021, Studio TRIGGER quietly [[FranchiseOwnershipAcquisition obtained the rights]] to ''Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann'' and ''Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt'' from Gainax, with the studio publicly announcing it a couple of years later at Anime Expo 2023.

----
!!Tropes associated with Studio TRIGGER:

* AnimationBump:
** ''Kill la Kill'' has several higher quality moments in spite of its many OffModel and LimitedAnimation moments.
** ''Kiznaiver'' and ''Little Witch Academia'' can be considered this for the studio as a whole.
* ArmsAndArmorThemeNaming: The Trigger Girls are all named after gun parts: the orange-haired one is named "Trigger", the blue-haired one "Muzzle", and the blonde one "Spring".
* AuthorAppeal:
** LimitedAnimation and OffModel are always featured in their series, as well as shout-outs to their favorite Western properties.
** Fittingly, given their roots are in shows such as ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' and ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'', TRIGGER are also big fans of mecha anime, with many of their works featuring numerous throwbacks to mecha anime if they aren't mecha anime themselves. Even ''Anime/LittleWitchAcademia2017'', a fantasy high school series that you think wouldn't have a mecha in it, featured one in one of its episodes.
* TheCameo: Elements from one of the company's various properties will often appear in the background of another of its works. For example, [[Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia Akko]] appears as a background student in ''Anime/SSSSGridman'', while a jumbotron in the first episode of ''Anime/BNABrandNewAnimal'' plays an episode of ''WebAnimation/InfernoCop''.
* CreatorDrivenSuccessor: TRIGGER is one to Creator/StudioGainax, as it was founded by ex-Gainax staff after leaving the studio in 2011. Naturally, many of Gainax's hallmarks, such as over the top action and Main/{{Fanservice}}, are carried over to TRIGGER.
* CreatorsOddball:
** ''Turning Girls'' was the first series to be grounded entirely in reality and was more or less a {{Sitcom}} about a bunch of late twenty-somethings. This would also be the first and only series to be made by the non-animator side of the studio, as well as have an all-female production team.
** ''Literature/WhenSupernaturalBattlesBecameCommonplace''. After ''Kill la Kill'' and their various shorts, the studio had firmly established themselves as continuing the legacy of making shows that are surreal, [[RuleOfCool nonsensical]], and sacrifice [[LimitedAnimation standard animation]] for [[DerangedAnimation more inventive animation methods]]... then their second TV project turned out to be a slice of life LightNovel adaptation about a kooky school club with rather standard animation which ended up regarded as SoOkayItsAverage.
** ''Anime/{{Kiznaiver}}'' is similarly a relatively down-to-earth romance/slice of life anime, but was far better received thanks to stronger writing (courtesy of Mari Okada) and SceneryPorn.
** ''Manga/DeliciousInDungeon'' is their first major direct adaptation of an existing work, a manga with a ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons''/''VideoGame/{{Wizardry}}''-like setting and emphasis on comedy over action. While ''Cyberpunk Edgerunners'' is based on the ''TabletopGame/{{Cyberpunk}}'' franchise, specifically ''VideoGame/Cyberpunk2077'', it is an original story set shortly before the latter.
* CreatorThumbprint: Their works prominently feature four-pointed stars: the stars on Goku Uniforms in ''Anime/KillLaKill'', the seven stars of the Shiny Rod in ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'', the scars in ''Anime/{{Kiznaiver}}'', and much, much more.
* DerangedAnimation: A lot of the visual gags wouldn't look out of place in a Creator/TexAvery cartoon.
* {{Fanservice}}:
** Given that TRIGGER is founded by ex-Creator/StudioGainax staff, it should come to no surprise that there is a ton of this in their anime, with even their mascots consisting of a trio of girls with very skimpy outfits. ''Anime/KillLaKill'' is even built on it, with the main character needing to become more at ease with [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl wearing a skimpy combat outfit in public]] if she wants to unlock its full capabilities.
** This is noticeably averted with anything directed by Yoh Yoshinari, such as ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'' and ''Anime/BrandNewAnimal'', both of which go out of their way to avoid having ''any'' kind of fanservice in them. Justified in that Yoshinari's works are typically aimed towards a younger and broader audience compared to Trigger's usual output, which are aimed towards a more mature audience.
* GodDoesNotOwnThisWorld: According to Tattun, Outside of ''WebAnimation/InfernoCop'', [[{{Mascot}} the Trigger Girls]] and ''Anime/SpacePatrolLuluco'', TRIGGER does not solely own the majority of their properties, despite creating them, with the majority of their productions being co-owned by other companies or owned under production committees. They even had to sell ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'' to get its TV show made.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: A lot of their works (like ''Kill la Kill'', ''Space Patrol Luluco'', ''Little Witch Academia'' and ''Darling in the FRANX'' for example) or anything related to their works either have a really limited release to begin with, very hard to find, and or might cost you a kidney to get, so if you miss something of theirs, you might be plumb out of luck, unless you know someone.
* LighterAndSofter: Any series helmed by Yoh Yoshinari, such as ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'' and ''Anime/BNABrandNewAnimal'', compared to the works of the studio's other directors. His shows showcase no gore or fanservice, and while they do have their darker moments, there's nothing would be out of place in any given animated series aimed at children or families.
* LimitedAnimation: Due to the low budget of their works, the animation in them generally comes off as the Creator/HannaBarbera of anime.
** Invoked as all of their series exhibit this, with ''Literature/NinjaSlayer'', ''Turning Girls'', ''WebAnimation/InfernoCop'' and ''Anime/SpacePatrolLuluco'' being the most blatant cases. [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools It's not a bad thing though]].
** ''Kiznaiver'' averts this, as generally does anything directed by Yoh Yoshinari.
** As of ''Brand New Animal'', they seem to be finding a SignatureStyle that elevates it into a sort of QualityOverQuantity approach, pouring SceneryPorn and stylish detailing into still shots while mixing in slick animations [[ShootTheMoney where it counts]].
* {{Mascot}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ2G5iXCVMw The Trigger Girls]], who the company unveiled on their 5th anniversary. Specifically their ''de facto'' leader, Trigger-chan. While the prospect of an anime starring them started out as an AprilFoolsDay joke, it's eventually revealed that [[spoiler:Trigger-chan is actually [[Anime/SpacePatrolLuluco Luluco]] herself]].
* {{Motif}}: a large, 4-pointed star is seen regularly in Trigger animations. Most prominently in ''Anime/KillLaKill'', ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'', and ''Anime/SpacePatrolLuluco''.
* ProductionPosse: With Creator/SanzigenAnimationStudio; helps that they reside in the same building. Creator/TripleA, Creator/{{Graphinica}}, Creator/StudioBihou, [[Creator/TakahashiProduction T2 Studio]] and Creator/{{Wish}} too, depending on the project.
* PromotedFanboy: Given that the studio is founded by ex-Gainax members, this is to be expected.
* ShoutOut: TRIGGER loves to put nods, homages, and shoutouts to older Anime, Western cartoons, and Live Action TV shows and movies. Any TRIGGER show with its own page, usually has a full page of Shout Outs.
* TheVerse: [[spoiler:''Anime/SpacePatrolLuluco'' ends up sharing one with at least four other Trigger works and is the origin story of the studio's mascot]]. [[spoiler:''Anime/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt'', despite not being a TRIGGER property until 2021, [[http://imgur.com/a/rFpaa is also part of this universe]].]]
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Apparently TRIGGER was also looking to make [[SpearCounterpart Trigger Boys]] as well, but the concept (burly men with a hefty dose of TestosteronePoisoning) was scrapped. [[spoiler: With all the later cameos in promotions [[Anime/SpacePatrolLuluco Nova]] got, lord knows what he would have turned into if Trigger went through with it.]]
