Nitroplus Co., Ltd. (Nitro Plus before the 2008 rebranding), stylized as nitro+, is a Japanese game company specializing in {{Eroge}} and {{Visual Novel}}s. Their works are almost invariably [[DarkerAndEdgier dark in tone]], with an abundance of {{Eldritch Abomination}}s, horror, rape, [[{{Gorn}} gore]] and violence.

Their first release was 2000's ''VisualNovel/PhantomOfInferno'', also was main writer Gen Urobuchi's first work with the company. Subsequent games such as 2003's ''VisualNovel/SayaNoUta'' and 2008's ''VisualNovel/ChaosHead'' garnered enough acclaim for the studio's popularity to reach levels comparable to that of Creator/KeyVisualArts, Creator/TypeMoon and [[Franchise/WhenTheyCry 07th Expansion]].

One of Nitro's most prolific creators is Creator/GenUrobuchi, who has gone on to write ''Literature/FateZero'', ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'', and ''Anime/PsychoPass'' independent of the company. Vocalist Music/KanakoItou is another frequent collaborator, having performed the musical themes for many of their [=VNs=] and anime adaptations. On a sad note, their music producer Shingo Minamino was murdered tragically and brutally in the middle of a busy street.

They have their own record label, [[https://www.georide.jp/ GEORIDE]], which represents a [[AssociatedComposer repertoire of music artists]] that often performs vocal themes on their titles.

For some reason, the company responsible for so many dark and disturbing stories has a mascot in the pink-haired, baby-faced, be-headphoned {{Moe}} character [[Anime/SuperSonico Super Sonico]]. And for the branch that focused on producing BoysLove {{Visual Novel}} called Nitro+[=CHiRAL=] have a mascot with long white-haired, always seen with his trusty bass, be-headphoned {{Bishonen}} character called [[https://static.zerochan.net/Naitou-kun.full.1450558.jpg Naitou-kun]].

In 2021, nitro+ announced that they are putting their R18 works (including Nitro+[=CHiRAL=] works) under a separate banner called Nitro Origin (formerly Nitro R18), while All-Ages stuff stays in the main brand, now renamed back into Nitro Plus.

!!Tropes Associated with Nitro Plus' Works:
* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: Most of the Background/Object images in their games are CG, made by CG Studio Polygon Bangcho/Nitroplus Arts. The [[AllThereInTheManual artbooks]] usually show the wireframes/rough models of said backgrounds.
* AgeGapRomance: Most of the Chiral titles usually includes one romanceable hero who is significantly older than the Protagonist (Motomi in ''Togainu no Chi'', Bardo in ''Lamento'', Mink in ''[=DRAMAtical=] Murder'', Taku and Madarame in ''Slow Damage'')
* AnimalMotifs: Cats and Dogs in the [=CHiRAL=] titles.
* AprilFoolsDay: They usually celebrate this every year. Highlights include them quitting the whole industry altogether to become farmers in 2008.
* AssociatedComposer: ZIZZ Studio is the default composing group for their games. Music/KanakoItou is this for their vocal tracks, up until the late-2010s.
* CreatorsOddball: VideoGame/ToukenRanbu was created in collaboration with DMM and is a male counterpart to VideoGame/KantaiCollection, featuring personified swords instead of battle ships. It touches on some dark subjects, particularly being darker than edgier than Kancolle itself, but it never quite gets as dark as some of Nitro+'s other works, making it come off as LighterAndSofter in comparison. Despite this, Nitro+ manages the franchise well, which is not surprising given that it's one of their most popular works to date, if not their most popular, and has grown to be an essential part of Japanese culture due to the massive impact it has had on tourism, sword appreciation, and the profitability of museums. [[invoked]]
* {{Cyberpunk}} : To date, they have made many works in this genre. Highlights includes "Hello, World", ''VisualNovel/KikokugaiTheCyberSlayer'', ''Anime/PsychoPass'', and ''VisualNovel/DramaticalMurder''. Their 2016 title ''Tokyo Necro'' continues this tradition, which is basically ''Film/BladeRunner'' '''[[RecycledInSpace WITH]] [[Main/ZombieApocalypse ZOMBIES]]'''!
* {{Deconstruction}}: The bread and butter of their body of work. For lighter shades, they tend to go for plain DarkerAndEdgier.
* DemotedToExtra: Super Sonico enjoyed breakout success, earning herself figures, games, comics, and even an extended cast compared to her solo days as a concert mascot. Naitou-kun on the other hand? Quietly receded to the background, with his main appearances being limited to concert duty. As a company mascot, he's been reduced to one of ''five'', the other four being {{Series Mascot}}s from [=CHiRAL=]'s library ([[VisualNovel/TogainuNoChi Akira]], [[VisualNovel/LamentoBeyondTheVoid Konoe]], [[VisualNovel/SweetPool Youji]], and [[VisualNovel/DramaticalMurder Aoba]]) that have much more promotion and merchandise.
* DevelopmentHell :
** Most of the official English localizations of their games. It's not the translation that takes a long time ---- but rather, [[RemadeForTheExport optimizing the games to run on modern machines]] that takes a long time.
** [[https://vndb.org/v3060 Dogra Q]], a dystopian fantasy work set to be written by ''Demonbane'''s writer. Announced in 2008, but has no updates since 2010.
* DVDCommentary: Completing an OneHundredPercentCompletion on their titles grants you to read the "Liner Notes" --- commentaries and production notes from people who worked on the titles.
* FanworkBan: You can sell fanworks of their works, as long as it does not violate [[http://nitroplus.co.jp/license/amateur.php these rules]][[note]]no selling more than 200 pieces or the profit must not be over 100,000 yen, whichever comes first[[/note]]. They will outright sue anyone who breaks the rules out of copyright issue. Fans can ask them for permissions should they want to sell more than 200 items/go over the profit of 100,000 yen as mentioned above[[note]]a good example of this are fan-made figures/garage kits, which could easily surpass those limits. This is the reason why Super Sonico and ''Touken Ranbu'' fan-made figures are very prominent in figure exhibitions.[[/note]]
* GoroawaseNumber:
** ''2106'', which is spelled 'Nitro', appeared in ''[=SoniAni=]'' and ''VisualNovel/DramaticalMurder'' (as 2106 CR-L, with CR-L as '[=CHiRAL=]'). PlayedForLaughs in Chiral's 2014 AprilFoolsDay game where the year 2106 is the slated release year for the full version of the game.
** The company even regards February 16 (2.16) as "Nitro Day".
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: The Chiral April Fools games (such as Osu Boys) were taken offline, but unofficial downloads still exist.
* MagicalGirl: ''Sumaga'' and ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' have main heroines that are these.
* {{Mascot}}:
** Anime/SuperSonico for Nitro+ and [[Main/SpearCounterpart Naitou-kun]] for Nitro+[=CHiRAL=], although they aren't exactly 'company mascots'[[note]] they are actually the official mascots for the live concerts, ''NITRO SUPER SONIC'' and ''THE CHIRAL NIGHT'', respectively[[/note]]. The truest mascots they do have are the widely less promoted Nitro-kun (a cubic robot) and Chiral-kun (a star-shaped robot).
** Super Pochaco, Super Taruco and Ouka also qualify as this, although they are less popular.
** Nitro+[=CHiRAL=] gained the mascots [[http://www.nitrochiral.com/game/rhythm-carnival/img/mascot_good-night.png Good Night]], [[http://www.nitrochiral.com/game/rhythm-carnival/img/mascot_inu.png Inu]], [[http://www.nitrochiral.com/game/rhythm-carnival/img/mascot_fairy.png Fairy]], [[http://www.nitrochiral.com/game/rhythm-carnival/img/mascot_kisekiuo.png Kisekiuo]], and [[http://www.nitrochiral.com/game/rhythm-carnival/img/mascot_brain-hatter.png Brain Hatter]] after the 10th anniversary celebration of The [=CHiRAL=] NIGHT. They also use the protagonists of their most popular games as additional {{Series Mascot}}s.
* MascotFighter:
** One of their April Fools jokes is a {{Crossover}} fighting game with [[Franchise/{{Nasuverse}} TYPE-MOON]], aptly-named ''[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin TYPE-MOON vs. Nitroplus]]''.
* MeaningfulName: The current engine used for their games is called [=N2System=]. N2 is the chemical symbol of Nitrogen.
** Super Sonico is written as 'すーぱーそに子', which could meant 'Super Sound Girl' or 'Supersonic' (as in supersonic sound). [[Main/SpearCounterpart Naitou-kun]], on the other hand, is derived from 'Night', although could be a derivation of 'Nitro' ('Nai' is spelled as 'Ni' in English pronunciation). The main draw from their names can be found in the fact that they were both mascots for their respective branch's concerts, NITRO '''SUPER SONIC''' (Sonico) and THE [=CHiRAL=] '''NIGHT''' (Naitou).
* LighterAndSofter :
** ''Sumaga'', ''VisualNovel/DramaticalMurder'', and [[VisualNovel/YouAndMeAndHer Totono]] has visual designs and atmosphere that are this trope, but [[CerebusSyndrome still]] ...although in the case of ''Sumaga'', it is a DeconReconSwitch of [[spoiler:SekaikeiGenre.]]
** ''[[Main/RhythmGame Soni]][[Main/RomanceGame Comi]]'' is a straight example of this trope. ''VideoGame/ToukenRanbu'' has shades of this trope, outside of the dark backstories of the characters and the tone of later campaigns, but ''Anime/ToukenRanbuHanamaru'' plays this trope to ''[=SoniComi=]'' levels of lightness.
* VanityPlate: They used one in ''VisualNovel/SayaNoUta'' (CG Sequence of a weapon-like thing opening to reveal their logo) and ''VisualNovel/LamentoBeyondTheVoid'' (a shot of characters' tail followed by N+C logo)
