My sense of humor is that of a geek. My likes and dislikes are those of a geek. I've memorized the dialogue of every crappy sci-fi movie there is, but I still haven't seen ''Film/SchindlersList''."''

Nathan Fillion (born March 27, 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian TV and movie actor who [[WebVideo/CommentaryTheMusical started off in the]] [[Series/OneLifeToLive soaps]]. Since then, he's moved on to a number of famous roles. A few of his characters can be morally questionable or bordering {{jerkass}} territory, but he's a really nice guy in person. [[FunPersonified And quite a comedian.]]

Despite its short run, his role as Malcolm Reynolds in ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' earned him most of his recognition, and many of his roles in ''Franchise/{{Halo}}'' have [[ActorAllusion referenced this]] in some way - his first part in ''VideoGame/Halo3'' was named Sgt. Reynolds after the Captain, as was his more major role in ''VideoGame/Halo3ODST'' as Gunnery Sergeant Edward Malcolm Buck, a role which he also reprised for ''VideoGame/HaloReach'' and ''VideoGame/Halo5Guardians''.

He was also [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hTiRnqnvDs used as Hal Jordan]] in a fan trailer for the proposed ''Franchise/GreenLantern'' film, which he thought was awesome. He wasn't actually cast in ''Film/GreenLantern2011'', but he ''was'' cast as Hal in the 2011 direct-to-DVD ''WesternAnimation/GreenLanternEmeraldKnights''. He reprised the role in ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueDoom'', ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueTheFlashpointParadox'' and ''WesternAnimation/TheDeathOfSuperman'', before going on to play Guy Gartner in the upcoming ''Superman Legacy''. Similarly, he was in talks to play [[Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger Captain America]], but the role went to Creator/ChrisEvans. However, he did end up playing a superhero (well, a satirical one anyway) known as The Holy Avenger in ''Film/{{Slither}}'' director James Gunn's second film ''Film/{{Super}}''. He began a ViralMarketing campaign to get himself the role of [[{{VideoGame/Uncharted}} Nathan Drake]] in an Uncharted movie, which he did not get, but the fan film shows us how that would've played out.

Regarding ''Firefly'', he said in a [[http://edition.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/TV/02/18/firefly.returns.ew/ interview ]] that if he had $300 million, he'd buy the rights to ''Firefly'' and make it his own. This being the internet, a brief but passionate movement sprang up to help him do such a thing, but it fell apart due to a lack of official support from Fillion himself and/or Creator/JossWhedon.

When asked at a convention what Fox would have to do to make the cancellation up to him, he said Fox would have to buy a private island, get a cruise ship to take a bunch of Firefly fans there, and build a life-size replica of the ship so he and the fans could act out scenes on it. Needless to say, he loves the show as much as any of the fans do.

He has a [[http://twitter.com/NathanFillion Twitter account]] and is very good at making MemeticMutation {{Catch Phrase}}s such as "Bam, said the lady" and "Feed the birds." Both have had cameos on his hit show ''Series/{{Castle|2009}}'' (as well as "Double Rainbow", a meme that he ''didn't'' start.)

He's also JustForFun/OneOfUs. Con-goers pass around a story where a few friends sat down for some ''Firefly'' pen-and-paper action. Nathan approached the table and purportedly requested to play as... River. His interactions with fans extend online as well, as evidenced in the following: In early August of 2012, he conducted a [[http://www.reddit.com/r/Denver/comments/xl3ih/this_is_a_test/ question-and-answer session on]] {{Website/Reddit}}. Here's [[https://twitter.com/NathanFillion/status/231142485336944640 proof for the skeptics]] that it is/was really him.

Some other geek facts:
* He kicked [[Music/JustinBieber Justin Bieber's]] ass in ''VideoGame/HaloReach''. According to him it "felt good". Also, there are two exceptions to the statement "Only {{Creator/Bungie}} employees have flaming heads in ''{{VideoGame/Halo 3}}''." Those two are a contest winner and Nathan Fillion.
* He has dated Creator/TriciaHelfer (Number Six in ''Series/BattlestarGalactica2003'') in the past, and called it the best date he had ever had when questioned on it by a fan.

Bizarrely, he has been [[CelebrityResemblance mistaken]] for Creator/JasonBateman several times by both normal people and celebrities alike to the point where it is a Real Life RunningGag. But of course, Nathan takes no offense to it and continues documenting the instances where it happens because he's just that awesome. It might help that on one of those occasions [[Funny/NathanFillion it got him out of a speeding ticket]].
!!His roles include:
* Malcolm Reynolds, captain of the Series/{{Firefly}}-class vessel ''Film/{{Serenity}}''.
* The first Joey Buchanan in ''Series/OneLifeToLive''.
* Johnny Donnelly (1999–2001) in ''Series/TwoGuysAGirlAndAPizzaPlace'' – arrives in the second season as a jukebox repairman with eyes for Sharon. Running gag is that he is very thrifty. The couple marry during the third-season finale.
* Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck in {{Creator/Bungie}}'s ''VideoGame/Halo3ODST'', starring alongside fellow ''Firefly'' mains Creator/AdamBaldwin and Creator/AlanTudyk. Sgt Buck would return in ''VideoGame/Halo5Guardians'' as a [[SuperSoldier Spartan-IV]].
* Richard Castle, the eponymous novelist-turned police consultant in the series ''Series/{{Castle|2009}}''.
* Captain Hammer, [[WebVideo/DoctorHorriblesSingAlongBlog Dr. Horrible's nemesis]].
* [[SinisterMinister Caleb]] in ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'', a major case of PlayingAgainstType.
* Hunter Vanguard (and fan favorite) [[LovableRogue Cayde-6]] in Bungie's ''VideoGame/{{Destiny}}'' franchise[[note]]Except for the ''Forsaken'' expansion. See the note below for the Uncharted entry.[[/note]]
* Alex Tully in ''Series/Drive2007'', another cancelled-after-4-episodes series from Creator/TimMinear.
* Abe Dale in ''Film/WhiteNoise2TheLight''.
* Bill Pardy, town sheriff from ''Film/{{Slither}}''.
* Father David in ''Film/{{Dracula 2000}}''.

* [[JerkJock Johnny Worthington III]] in ''WesternAnimation/MonstersUniversity'' and ''WesternAnimation/MonstersAtWork''.
* Hermes, god of thieves and travelers and father of [[BigBad Luke Castellan]] in ''Film/{{Percy Jackson|AndTheOlympians}}: Sea of Monsters''.
* [[AristocratsAreEvil Preston Northwest]] in ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls''
* Jacques Snicket in ''Series/ASeriesOfUnfortunateEvents2017''.
* A DeletedRole as [[ComicBook/WonderMan Simon Williams]] in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2''.
** Master Karja in ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol3''.
* Sterling in ''WesternAnimation/Cars3''.
* Cornvelius Daniel in ''WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty''.
* Spiderman expy "Brown Widow" in ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers''
* Gary [[spoiler:the severed head]] in ''Series/SantaClaritaDiet''
* Nathan Drake in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5CZQpqF_74 a 2018 fan film based on the]] ''VideoGame/{{Uncharted}}'' series[[note]]This role prevented him from voicing Cayde-6 in the Destiny 2 expansion Forsaken, where he was replaced by...Creator/NolanNorth, who voiced Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series. Coincidence? Not really, but an interesting role switch.[[/note]]
* John Nolan in [=ABC=]'s ''[[Series/TheRookie2018 The Rookie]]''
* TDK/The Detachable Kid in ''Film/TheSuicideSquad''
* Guy Gartner / Green Lantern in ''Superman'' (2025)

----
!!Tropes Associated with his involved works and characters:
* CelebrityResemblance: He bears a physical and acting-wise resemblance to his fellow preceding television counterparts Creator/LarryHagman from ''Series/{{Dallas}}'' and Paul Linke from ''Series/{{CHiPs}}'', right down to the acting filmography similarities when comparing Nathan's acting roles to Hagman's and Linke's (see {{Expy}} below for more detail).
* {{Expy}}:
** His role as Sheriff Bill Pardy in ''Film/{{Slither}}'' can be compared to Paul Linke's character of Sheriff Bruce Smith of ''Film/MotelHell'', due to their roles as brown-haired and seemingly meek and mild-mannered sheriffs who both happened to be protagonists of horror comedy B-movies and are both a naive IdiotHero in a way.
** Nathan's role as Preston Northwest in ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'' is a somewhat of a loose cartoon version of Creator/LarryHagman's character J.R. Ewing from the television show ''Series/{{Dallas}}'', just without the stetson and the Southern accent, with a mustache and if J.R. was an outright CardCarryingVillain rather just being AffablyEvil.
** Cayde-6 in ''VideoGame/{{Destiny}}'' is pretty close to what would happen if you stuck Malcolm Reynolds into an administrative position (and a spiffy robot body), with the same crazy plans, accent, attitude towards authority, and desire to get out and fight the war himself.
** Nathan's most recent role as John Nolan in [=ABC=]'s ''The Rookie'' is for now the closest thing to a modern spin-off of ''Series/{{CHiPs}}'' following Paul Linke's equally quirky cop character Officer "Grossy" Grossman.
* InkSuitActor: His primary character in the ''Halo'' series, Sergeant Buck, [[http://41.media.tumblr.com/a3020a9e098830cd61f47b5d21cb6a7b/tumblr_npsi7jgcgj1t0eee6o1_1280.png is an exact replica of himself]].
* OldShame: Averted, to the point of reprising the role of Joey Buchanan on OLTL in 2007, having nice things to say about his SoapOpera days and unashamedly tells funny stories about the "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TktV93g9H3g three faces of acting]]" as well as how useful a school it was.
* ProductionPosse: A proud and frequent member of both Creator/JossWhedon's and Creator/JamesGunn's.
* StarMakingRole: Captain Malcolm Reynolds of ''Firefly'' in sci-fi circles, but Richard Castle of ''Castle'' made him known to the mainstream audience. That being said, he became just as known for ''Firefly'' to the mainstream as TheNewTens rolled on and Firefly became a sleeper hit.
