Liv Rundgren Tyler (born Liv Rundgrenfor Music/ToddRundgren, whom her mother (singer-model Bebe Buell) originally falsely claimed as her biological father, July 1, 1977) is an American actress who's probably best known as the daughter of Music/Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, as well as for playing Arwen in Film/TheLordOfTheRings, and her roles in other movies such as Film/EmpireRecords, Stealing Beauty, Film/ThatThingYouDo, Film/Armageddon1998, Film/OneNightAtMcCools, Film/JerseyGirl, and Film/2008 (as Betty Ross).

!!This actress contains examples of:
* ActorAllusion:invoked In Film/JerseyGirl she plays a woman who works at a video store. One of the movies that can be seen is Stealing Beauty - Liv's breakout role.
* ActorInspiredElement:invoked For the dream conversation between Aragorn and Arwen, their dialogue was originally written entirely in English. Liv had become a huge fan of the Elvish language, and asked them to have them speak some of the lines in Elvish instead. Peter Jackson later said the change was absolutely for the better.
* AwesomeDearBoy:invoked She took her role in Film/TheIncredibleHulk2008 before even reading the script.
* CastingGag:invoked
** In Film/TheIncredibleHulk2008 she plays Betty Ross, following on from Creator/JenniferConnelly, who played her in . They had played sisters in Inventing The Abbotts.
** In both Film/TheIncredibleHulk2008 and Film/TheLordOfTheRings she plays the daughter of a high ranking man and dates someone he disapproves of.
** In both Film/Armageddon1998 and Film/EmpireRecords her love interest is called AJ.
** In both Film/Armageddon1998 and Film/AdAstra she plays the SatelliteLoveInterest of an astronaut who goes on a dangerous mission to save the world by detonating a nuclear warhead in space.
* CreatorBacklash:invoked At one point in development, Arwen was going to get some Xenafication to show up at Helm's Deep and fight in the battle. This was a leftover element from when the books were going to be just two movies - and Arwen and Eowyn would be combined. Liv hated the idea, constantly stressing that Arwen didn't need to fight in battle to be a strong character. When the idea was scrapped, she was very pleased.
* DawsonCasting:invoked Averted. She was nineteen for Stealing Beauty - the exact age of her character Lucy.
* DeletedRole:invoked She had a small role in Film/EveryoneSaysILoveYou that ended up cut. Woody Allen was so impressed by her performance that he wrote her a letter personally to apologise.
* DyeingForYourArt:invoked Normally a brunette, she dyed her hair red for Film/OneNightAtMcCools.
* EruditeStoner: A clip of her being interviewed in Cannes while promoting Stealing Beauty has her saying "Hi" to "all her friends in Maine". She sounds slightly "buoyant".
* FakeBrit:invoked She puts on an English accent for Arwen. Apparently her own father thought she had been dubbed. Earlier she had also put one on to play a Russian character in Onegin, and to play an actual Brit in Film/PlunkettAndMacleane and Gunpowder.
* HairFlip: Liv was photographed by Greg Williams doing one while in attendance at the 2018 UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity ePrix.
* HilariousOuttakes: While filming the "come and claim him" bit from Film/TheLordOfTheRingsTheFellowshipOfTheRing, she accidentally stabbed herself in the thigh. This was featured in many outtakes and bloopers.
* MsFanservice: The Aerosmith video she starred in and the thin nightshirt scene in The Lord of the Rings spring to mind. And then, of course, there's Stealing Beauty.
* NiceGirl: Liv has often been regarded as being genuinely kind and down-to-earth from those who have observed or come in personal contact with her.
* PlayingAgainstType:invoked In Series/TheLeftovers, it doesn't seem like this at first, .
* PurityPersonified: Liv is generally very soft-spoken, well mannered, and polite acting in interviews. It should be noted that her maternal grandmother, Dorothea Johnson was an etiquette expert.
* RealLifeRelative:invoked She stars in Film/Armageddon1998 and Aerosmith - who are headlined by her father - supply most of the soundtrack.
* SheAlsoDid: In the extended cut of Film/TheLordOfTheRingsTheReturnOfTheKing, Liv sings the song used in the Houses of Healing scene.
* StarMakingRole:invoked Despite the mixed reception to Stealing Beauty, Liv received unanimous praise and enjoyed a higher profile afterwards.
* StatuesqueStunner: It's easy to fall into this trope when you're a 5'10 woman.
* StuntCasting:invoked WordOfGod is that New Line Cinema wanted her to play Arwen in the hopes of having one Hollywood star in the trilogy. In the credits, she was billed third, despite Arwen being a relatively minor character like she was in the books.
* ThoseTwoActors: She starred with Ben Affleck in both Film/Armageddon1998 and Film/JerseyGirl.
* VocalDissonance: Despite being a StatuesqueStunner, Liv is also known for her gentle, whispery, almost peaceful speaking voice.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:invoked
** She recorded a song to be used in Film/TheLordOfTheRingsTheTwoTowers but it was cut for not fitting with the tone. It's included on the extended edition of The Return of the King.
** Uma Thurman was the first choice for Arwen, but had to decline due to her pregnancy at the time. Liv was apparently one of the last actresses cast.
** She presumably would have had a bigger role in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse but the casting change of Creator/EdwardNorton to Creator/MarkRuffalo - and Bruce's subsequent romance with Black Widow has resulted in Liv's Betty Ross not appearing past the one film. It only made things worse when it was announced that her character was killed off-screen during Film/AvengersInfinityWar. Keep in mind that Universal previously had the film rights for the Hulk.
** A spin-off of Film/OneNightAtMcCools was considered - revolving around Jewel Valentine - but never happened due to the death of screenwriter Stan Seidel.
* WhosYourDaddy: She spent much of childhood assuming Todd Rundgren was her father, until it was revealed that Steven Tyler was her father, and her mother lied both to her and Rundgren.
