Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske; September 16, 1924 – August 12, 2014) was an American actor known for her distinctive voice and sultry looks, as well as her range that allowed her to do everything from serious, dramatic [[FilmNoir films noir]] such as ''Film/TheBigSleep'' (with her first husband, Creator/HumphreyBogart) to ridiculous comedies of errors like ''Film/HowToMarryAMillionaire'' (with Creator/BettyGrable and Creator/MarilynMonroe).

Bacall's acting career could be best described as "right place, right time" or the idyllic lifestyle that any aspiring actor would want. After her parents' separation when she was a child, her mother encouraged her to make it big in show business. Her [[StageNames name was changed]] (due to "Perske" sounding too Jewish, apparently... although "Bacall" was from her mother's family's equally Jewish name of "Bacal-Weinstein") and [[DyeHard her hair was dyed]]; she was "discovered" by ''Harper's Bazaar'' columnist Diana Vreeland, and appeared on the cover of that magazine's March 1943 issue (posing outside of a Red Cross blood donation office); and her screen debut, alongside Bogart in 1944's ''Film/{{To Have and Have Not}}'', was one of the most successful movies of the year. She would go on to appear in three more films with Bogart, whom she first met when she was nineteen and married despite his being more than twenty years her senior.

Starting in TheSixties, she stopped regularly appearing in films, but had a rather successful career on Broadway, starring in productions such as ''Theatre/CactusFlower'' and ''Applause'', and as a liberal activist. She also provided voice-overs for [[StationIdent station idents]] created for Creator/{{PBS}} between 1996 and 2002 (in one version, Bacall herself appeared, as that series of idents had people like Creator/ChrisRock lifting a disc with the "P-Head" symbol over their faces as small acrobats appeared around them). For 53 years she lived in the Dakota Apartments in New York City, and thus was a neighbor of Music/JohnLennon prior to his 1980 murder.

She is the mother of actor Creator/SamRobards, from her second marriage to Creator/JasonRobards.

Incidentally, Bacall was a cousin of Shimon Peres, former UsefulNotes/{{Israel}}i president and prime minister, who won the Nobel Peace Prize with Rabin and Arafat for trying to fix the UsefulNotes/ArabIsraeliConflict. Peres was born Szymon Perski. One wonders what their family reunions (if any) were like.

She died on August 12, 2014 at the age of 89 in New York City from a stroke.

!!Her career displays examples of:
* AdamWesting: She guest-starred as herself in ''Series/TheSopranos'', appearing aloof and out of touch with regular folk, and cursing like a sailor when she's mugged.
* DeadpanSnarker: Being closely associated with FilmNoir after all, her characters tended to be snarky.
* DyeHard: Naturally a brunette, she dyed her hair red as a career move, and stuck with it.
* FemmeFatale: She played this character a lot.
* FilmNoir: The genre she is closely associated with.
* LastOfHerKind: She was one of a very select few members of The Golden Age of Hollywood who lived well into the 21st century. More specifically, of the 15 giants of Old Hollywood that Music/{{Madonna}} name checks in the ''Film/DickTracy''-inspired song [[Music/ImBreathless "Vogue"]], she was the last one to pass away.
* MsFanservice: Was often the eye candy on the screen. Bacall herself [[IAmNotPretty didn't understand the attention she received]] because she saw herself as plain-looking and too tall with large feet.
* OneTrueLove: Go ahead, take one guess. Bacall herself put it best: “I’ve loved since, but he was my first love, and you never forget your first love. I’ve never loved anyone as much as him.”
* PromotedFangirl: Bacall states that her marriage to Bogart helped her to mingle with many famous actors and celebrities that were eventually referred to as legends, despite being years younger than them. Some of them she'd even admired when she was a teenager in drama school.
* RomanceOnTheSet: She and Creator/HumphreyBogart met and fell in love while making ''Film/ToHaveAndHaveNot''.
* SittingSexyOnAPiano: Bacall struck a relatively innocent version of this pose in [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lauren_Bacall_with_Vice_President_Truman.jpg a famous photo]] with then-Vice President UsefulNotes/HarrySTruman at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in 1945.
* SmokingIsGlamorous: One of the iconic cigarette smokers in Hollywood.
* StageName: Given to her by Creator/HowardHawks. Her close friends called her "Betty," though, and Bogart called her "Baby."
* StarMakingRole: ''Film/ToHaveAndHaveNot''.
* StatuesqueStunner: Stood at 5'9", just one inch taller than her first husband [[ThoseTwoActors and frequent costar]], Creator/HumphreyBogart.
* {{Tsundere}}: Her screen persona tended to run hot and cold, alternating between aloof and passionate.
