!![[YourSoulIsMine YOUR TROPES ARE MINE]]:
* CoolOldGuy: As the titular character in ''Johnny Tsunami'', and later as resident biologist Hiroki Watanabe in ''Series/LostInSpace2018''.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Has a delightfully deep and sonorous voice, which he uses to great effect in his villainous roles. His normal voice is actually a lot lighter, he just deepens it in his movie roles because of this trope.
* InterchangeableAsianCultures / FakeNationality: He is Japanese and Japanese-American, but has played other Asian nationalities and cultures across his career. Examples include his role the East Asian Kabai Sengh in ''Film/{{The Phantom|1996}}'', the Vietnamese Vinh Moc in ''Film/SoldierBoyz'' and even his signature role as Shang Tsung in ''Film/MortalKombatTheMovie'' and assorted media (it's unclear if Shang Tsung even belongs to a human nationality, but his name and styling is evidently Chinese).
* LargeHam: While he specializes in more quiet, reserved bad guys, he can ham it up with the best of them when necessary, and has the possibly-unique ability to be a ''[[ColdHam quiet]]'' Large Ham. Surfboard in ''Johnny Tsunami''?
** He also plays a Japanese Orthodox priest in Иерей-Сан (translated as Priest-San), he interestingly stated that this role was the closest to his real life personality.
* RoleReprise: He returned his role as Shang Tsung in the second season of ''WebVideo/MortalKombatLegacy'' 18 years after he last portrayed him. Later he would reprise the role again for ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'', ''24 years'' after he first took up the sorcerer's mantle - and he plays the role in an {{Ink Suit|Actor}}, to boot!.
