A male 6-year-old humanoid Mamodo, his heart is pure and his kindness and willpower have no limit. Formerly at the bottom of his class, losing consciousness when he attempted to use his spells, partnering with a human enabled him to unleash his full power. Inheritor of his father’s sentient spell Bao, which is capable of devouring all negative emotion, he is a formidable fighter.
:
In the sequel, a 19-years-old Zatch is the ruler of the Demon World when it gets attacked by monsters from a different world. He sacrifices himself to restore as many lives as he can, but also comes up with a way to be revived on Earth and reunites with Kiyomaro. Now the two must gather allies to fight this new threat.
----
* AdaptationalDyeJob: While in the anime, Zatch's robe is distinctly black with blue shading, in colored art for the manga, it tends to be green with black shading instead.
* AllYourPowersCombined: [[spoiler:Against Clear's final form, Zatch is given access to the Golden Spellbook, allowing all the defeated demons show up to lend their support, and in many cases, their Shin-class spells. Saying it's awesome is an understatement.]]
* AmnesiacHero: Even his name is a mystery to him at first. Not knowing who he is or anything about why he's on Earth is initially a huge disadvantage, until he meets some people who knew him in the demon world.
* AwesomeButImpractical:
** At first, Bao Zakeruga. It is an extremely powerful attack, but the emotional power needed to use it is enough to render Kiyomaru immobile for awhile.
** Jikerudo. It creates a sphere of electricity, which turns a person into a living magnet if it makes contact, which will, in a best-case-scenario, completely immobilize them by sticking them to the nearest large metal object. Unfortunately the spell will not activate at all if there is no metal in the vicinity, and being a magnetism-based ability, it needs a sizable amount of metal to hold someone still for any period of time. It is later replaced by Māzu Jikerudon, which has none of Jikerudo's limitations.
* BadassAdorable: Most demons are, but Zatch is especially cute and, after gaining some experience, exceptionally badass.
* BerserkButton: In general, Zatch despises mamodos who gleefully abuse their power and influence on others, especially those looking to take advantage of being king.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When in the proper mood, he's a force of nature.
* BigEater: Like most mamodo, he's more than capable of eating an animal whole, bones and all. Cooking is optional.
* BreathWeapon: Most of his lightning spells are projected from his mouth.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Zeno's Cain.
* ChangelingFantasy: [[spoiler:He is actually the son of Dauwan Bell, the latest king of the demon world. As Dauwan could no longer contain the power of [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Baou]], he was forced to pass it to one of his children, choosing Gash because Zeon had inherited his bloodlust. As such, Gash was hidden away to protect him from those that would use power of Baou for their own benefit, and in the hopes that he would never access that power himself]].
* CleanDubName: His name was changed to Zatch in the English version, likely because "Gash" refers to [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast a long deep cut or wound]]. Or female genitalia.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: While Zatch is fairly powerful on his own, he learns the secrets of his regenerating, shielding mantle late in the story.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Blonde hair and golden eyes.
* DeathGlare: Enough to stun the badass Bari.
* {{Determinator}}: Giving up is about the only thing he can't do. The few battles he's ever lost were ones where he was physically unable to continue. [[spoiler: Even when faced with the seeming invincibility of Clear Note, he refused to give up. This determination inspired the defeated Mamodo to lend him their power to finish Clear Note.]]
* DubNameChange: From Gash to Zatch. This was probably a necessity as the translators could not come up with a natural way for Kiyomaro to say "Zaker" by accident.[[note]]In Japanese he says ''Fu'''zakeru'''na''/"Don't mess with me" while in English he shouts "Get out of here, ''Zack, er'', Zatch!"(manga)/"''Zaker'', or whatever your name is!"(anime)[[/note]]
* DynamicEntry: How he's introduced to the series: Hang-gliding straight into Kiyo's bedroom window on an ''eagle,'' stark naked, with a tuna on his back.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: Zatch's hair is much shorter and thinner at the beginning of the series, almost like a bowl cut, but by the end, it's longer, fuller, and more solid. Could be justified as his hair simply growing out while in the human world. In particular, the hair in front of his ears really grows out during the final arc.
* EasilyImpressed: Blowing his mind is a piece of cake. In one of the first episodes, Kiyo is able to captivate him with a toy made of an empty box of potato sticks and chopsticks.
* ElementalHairColors: He's a blond boy with electric powers. Also counts for ElementalEyeColors since his eyes are golden.
* ElementalPersonalities: He's a very energetic and excitable boy who specializes in lightning spells.
* FamedInStory: In a bad way. Zatch was infamous for being a total pushover on his homeworld; many of the early enemies he faces are Mamodo who come after him because they expect him to be an easy win. As the series progresses this reverses and Bari seeks him out because Zatch has become known to defeat anyone who challenges him.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers:
** Even without his book, Zatch has repeatedly displayed superhuman qualities, but he never uses them to defend himself against Naomi. Best exemplified in a chapter where he's hiding from her then pages later is [[https://meo3.comick.pictures/10-Ypuhuai6DHeTf.png lifting a boulder]] over his head to show off his strength to another demon. Of course, it could be assumed he's not particularly inclined to use his full fighting capabilities on a normal human girl.
** Despite the supposedly AwesomeButImpractical status of Jikerudo, there were actually multiple opponents[[note]]Maruss, Rops, Kido, Boru Bora, Demolt, Arth, and Buzarai[[/note]] where it could have been put to good use because of the attributes of their spells. In fact, it's actually quite fortunate for Cherish and Gyaron that Kiyo was out of commission at the time that Zatch and the others confronted them because with the latter's metal armor and both being surrounded by heavy iron doors things could have turned south for them very quickly. Also, several of [[spoiler:''Clear Note's'']] spells involved weapons[[note]]lance and spears[[/note]] with metal.
* GoingCommando: Sometimes Zatch is wearing underwear beneath his robe, sometimes...not.
* TheGoodKing: It's his goal to become one by winning the tournament. [[spoiler:And he does indeed become one.]]
* GoThroughMe: Zatch takes a lot of hits to protect Kiyo. The one time Kiyo explicitly tells Zatch ''not'' to do this, [[spoiler:Kiyo dies.]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He's a good-hearted and heroic blond boy, in noticeable contrast to his [[WhiteHairBlackHeart white-haired]] EvilTwin.
* HeightAngst: In the sequel, Zatch is short for a 19-year-old and doesn't like getting mistaken for a 14-15 year-old. Even his own ''twin brother'' has been getting taller while Zatch himself hasn't grown since his early teens, much to his dismay.
* HopeBringer: He becomes this. Near the end of the series, some Mamodo reassures themselves and others when their books are burning with the knowledge that Zatch will become king and he will be a good king.
* IdiotHero: Largely by virtue of being a 6-year-old, with the lack of wisdom and maturity that comes with that. He can be easily fooled, especially when things he really likes such as Yellowtail are involved. However, when it's time to get serious, he focuses up just fine.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg9unnLdhEs March of the Tender King]]"
* InvincibleHero: A surprising subversion. Despite being way stronger than he appears and racking up more victories than any other demon child, he still loses several times and escapes with his book intact due to circumstances including getting a FateWorseThanDeath instead (Zeon), earning the opponent's bookkeeper's respect (Sherry and Shinichi), being too defiant for the opponent to match (Bari), or having his friends arrive to pull a BigDamnHeroes ([[spoiler:Leo]]).
* {{Keet}}: He's a fun-loving and excitable child.
* KidHero: He's no more than 8 years old.
* KryptoniteFactor: Due to the intensity of Zatch's spells, he usually passes out when performing them, making it hard to aim. Because of this, Kiyo needs to be sure that Zatch is focused on his target before performing the spell. He normally does this by pointing at his target right before casting the spell.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Zeon stole his memories to make sure he suffered in the human world, constantly attacked without knowing why.
* LimitBreak: Baou Zakerga tends to be the finishing move and it is quite powerful, especially in its true form. [[spoiler: He got it from his father, King Bell.]]
* MagicPants: As it turns out, his mantle actually is magic, giving it the ability to stretch to any size while also capable of self-repair. A gift from [[spoiler: his father, the King. Zeon got one too.]]
* MagneticHero: Despite initially being regarded as the weakest mamodo in the competition, Zatch ends up with a large collection of friends and allies through sheer force of personality. He's easily the most successful of any mamodo at making friends among the other children; even Dr. Riddles noted he had no luck whatsoever in recruiting mamodo to fight Zofis until he met Zatch.
* NakedFirstImpression: Zatch is naked when he first meets Kiyo.
* NakedOnArrival: In his introduction, he arrives naked to Kiyo's bedroom.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: About half of Zatch's laughs come from being naked at inappropriate times. Even more so in the anime.
* ObliviousToLove: He's ''very'' dense when it comes to dealing with girls' feelings for him. It really gets him into trouble with Penny, who thought she was his girlfriend and becomes furious when she realizes he doesn't even remember her, although his amnesia is mostly to blame for that. In Tia's case, however, he's just clueless to her {{Tsundere}} antics. [[JustifiedTrope Considering that he's only 6 years old, this makes sense.]]
* ObsessedWithFood: A minor running gag in the series is Zatch mistaking names for food (e.g. Mafia=Muffin and Hallburg Castle=Hamburger Castle).
* OlderThanHeLooks: At 19 years old, he's still considerably short. Kiyo is surprised when Zatch mentions his age, pointing out that he looks fourteen at the oldest. [[JustifiedTrope The reason for this is probably because that as the Mamodo King he now has a much longer lifespan than any other Mamodo]].
* ThePowerOfHate: Baou Zakeruga's true power was only unlocked through Zatch's seething hatred towards [[spoiler: Riou, for killing Kiyo.]] Said event also grants Zatch four new spells and ''immensely'' powers up his existing spells. Also [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed big time.]] While Baou's true power was unlocked by Zatch's hate, it also begins to consume him and threatens his life. Indeed, this is why [[spoiler: King Bell gave it to Zatch in the first place. His usage of Baou in the previous war turned it angry and monstrous. Zeno, who was born with the King's former rage, would be ''destroyed'' by the spell and gave it to the more kind-hearted Zatch.]] Baou feeds on hate and consumes spells born from it. Zatch ends up ''purifying'' Baou and having it rediscover its power to end hate in the first place. This is shown when it defeats Zeno's ultimate spell, which was born from his and Dufort's hatred, by consuming it and thus taking away their hate.
* RagsToRoyalty: [[spoiler:An interesting example in that while he was actually a member of the royal family to begin with, the only reason his family was able to remain as royalty by the time he rejoins them is because he wins the tournament and becomes the king himself]].
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Zatch's attacks are very powerful, but he is unique in that, for whatever reason, he momentarily goes unconscious whenever using a spell. As such, he has no real way to fine-tune his aim whenever Kiyomaro casts a spell. They get around this by having Kiyomaro essentially point out whatever his target is before casting anything so that he can be pre-aimed before the spell is cast. However, as of the sequel, this doesn't serve any purpose beyond [[RuleofCool looking cool]] because Zatch no longer loses consciousness from using his powers.
* SensorCharacter: He gains the ability to sense other demons after the training with Dufaux.
* ShockAndAwe: His attacks are electricity-related. Chosen since the creator's name, Raiku, means 'thunder'. [[spoiler: ItRunsInTheFamily given how his brother has it and possibly his father as well.]]
* StockShonenHero: He's an overly cheerful and friendly KidHero with a strong sense of justice and [[BigEater an enormous appetite]]. His goal is becoming the Mamodo King and creating a kingdom where Mamodo aren't forced to fight each other.
* SuperMode: Rauzaruk, the sixth spell, enhances Zatch's strength and speed exponentially for thirty seconds, at the cost of not being able to use any other spells. Thankfully Kiyo figured this out pretty quickly. [[spoiler: The Golden Book in the final chapters, which allowed Gash/Zatch to use souped-up spells of past mamodo who were already defeated.]]
* SuperStrength: True of all demons, but most obvious with Zatch, who stopped Pamoon's strongest spell with his body alone.
* TookALevelInBadass: He starts out as a joke among the other demon children, to the extent that they seek him out for an easy win. By series' end, he's reached a level of power that only the strongest of them could hope to match.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Yellowtail tuna. He eats it whole. And raw.
* VerbalTic: 'Unu!' in the Japanese version. [[spoiler: This was apparently a way of speaking that is reserved for royalty, which he started after finding out who his real family was.]]

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TakahiroSakurai (JP), Creator/JasonSpisak (EN), Adolfo Moreno (SP), Creator/JoseGilbertoVilchis (LA)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0kiyo_29.png]]

A brilliant but aloof 14-year-old Japanese middle school student. Meeting Zatch helps him become a warmer and more compassionate person with willpower that rivals his partner’s. His mind is the primary weapon against any enemies that cross their paths.
:
In the sequel, Kiyo becomes a world-famous archeologist and learns of a prophecy that warns of an incoming disaster to the Demon World. After reviving Zatch with help from a demon girl named Zelie and his assistant Zahra, Kiyo sets out on a new adventure to save the Demon World.
----
* AcademicAthlete: Near the end of the series, he's athletic enough to break school records and is still the smartest around.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: With an IQ of 180, this is his own special skill and the deciding factor in almost every battle that they fight. Later on, when he gains the Answer Talker this is only amplified.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:He is in fact dead for a short period, only has his heart restarted by an emotionally broken Zatch pounding on his chest, and even that isn't enough. It also takes a lot of Saifogeos and a long dip in restorative Faudo juice before he wakes up, and his allies have taken a lot of damage by then.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: At the end of the Faudo saga, when he ''finally'' comes back.
* BrilliantButLazy: At the beginning of the series, he chooses not to go to school, in part due to bullying and in part because he's so smart it's a triviality. He is a serious student when he goes back, though some of his teachers still regard him as lazy due to resenting the ease with which his studies come to him.
* BystanderSyndrome: At the start of the series, his biggest flaw was that he constantly talked himself out of doing the right thing when he saw someone in trouble. Zatch's influence breaks this entirely, and by the third chapter, he's got ChronicHeroSyndrome.
* CameBackStrong: [[spoiler: When he recovers from his short time being dead, he reveals that he has unlocked the Answer Talker, the same ability Zeno's book holder Dufont has. It's a psychic ability that lets the wielder answer any question. This has taken his already considerable powerful mind and made him ''much'' more dangerous. Additionally, he gained a near-bottomless amount of Heart Energy and a whopping ''four new spells''.]]
* CharacterTics: A RunningGag is that every time Kiyomaro becomes annoyed with someone he squints at them with dull yellow eyes. In a "Gash Café" chapter, Gofure even praises him for being a partner with [[ReactionShot "great reactions"]]. Also, if Kiyomaro gets outright furious, he inexplicably gains a demonic appearance that unnerves even Zeon.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: All of the physical strain that the demon fights put Kiyo through seriously beefs him up. By the end of the series, he's shattering his school's athletic records and pulling off feats of strength on par with Zatch.
* DeathGlare: On par with Zatch's. Possibly the ''true'' reason they make such good partners.
* DemonHead: His angry face takes the form of a giant oni mask. Taken to epic levels in the final fight with Rodeaux.
* {{Determinator}}: Matched only by Zatch in this department; even [[spoiler:his own death]] isn't enough to stop him.
* FreudianExcuse: While a Jerkass and InsufferableGenius early in the story, according to his father, once middle school came around and kids realized how much smarter than them Kiyo was, they shunned him, which led to Kiyo lashing out on them in return.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Performed in the battle against Riou/Leo. He knows that telling Zatch to focus entirely on offense is going to put him in mortal danger, but goes through with it anyway because he knows its his only chance of incapacitating Riou. It works like a charm, at the cost of his own life.]]
* GeniusBookClub: Kiyo is introduced as the kind of guy who reads MIT dissertations for fun. And even that was too easy for him.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's arrogant and short-tempered, but a good guy deep down. And even after his early character development into a much kinder person, he'll still use Zatch to electrocute people he finds obnoxious now and again.
* LonerTurnedFriend: To just about everyone in his school. Once he comes out of his shell, he's surprisingly good at making friends.
* NightmareFace: Gains [[DeathGlare a disturbing]] [[DemonHead demonic face]] with fangs and horns whenever he's really enraged. Even ''Zeno'' got terrified of him.
* ObliviousToLove: Both Suzume and Megumi have feelings for him. Kiyo has no clue, one of the only areas where his intelligence fails him. He looks more receptive to Megumi, though.
* OffhandBackhand: One of the signs of his growing experience in battle is him casting a spell without looking at the enemy, confident that Zatch will be aiming the right way.
* OnlySaneMan: Often when faced with the antics of the rest of the group.
* ReedRichardsIsUseless: Subverted. When he gains the Answer-Talker and recovers from the battle to get used to it, one of his first thoughts is how he could improve the world with it. Though he does initially struggle from the mental stress of having it. In the sequel series, it's shown that after becoming an archeologist he's using his prodigious knowledge to teach in a poor Egyptian village.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Sometimes have to clarify to people that he and Megumi are just friends, despite both having a considerable amount of ShipTease. It's implied that Megumi does have a thing for Kiyo, but it never becomes more explicit than this. Kiyo is also shown to be at least receptive to the notion.
* ShipTease: With Suzy, Megumi, and, in the anime, Shion. Suzy is his first friend, while Megumi is a {{Fire Forged Friend}} who [[RescueRomance Kiyo saved]] and, of the book holders, is his closest friend. Because Shion only exists in an anime-only filler arc, she abruptly leaves for good before anything can come of it. The anime much more heavily teases Megumi's feelings for Kiyo, but neither this nor Suzy's very obvious crush on Kiyo ever get resolved.
* TheStrategist: His main contribution to any team. Arguably, it's the main reason why Zatch was able to hold his own in the tournament at all, as he was quickly able to deduce the things that Zatch had forgotten, and figure ways around Zatch's critical weaknesses. Even when the two join forces with other mamodos, Kiyo is their main tactician.
* SuperIntelligence: Later, Kiyo acquires the Answer Talker ability, which allows his intelligence to soar to the heights of near omniscience.
* TookALevelInKindness: Starts out as an ill-tempered {{Jerkass}} to soon become a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. More obvious after character development. By the end of the series, he's a NiceGuy who only [[BewareTheNiceOnes gets mean if angry or frustrated.]]
* YoungerThanHeLooks: He’s 14, but he barely resembles a middle school student, which in Japan covers the 7th to the 9th grade.

!Major Allies
!!Megumi and Tia
[[folder:Tia/Tio]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/RieKugimiya (JP), Creator/MelissaFahn (EN), Miriam Valencia (SP), Creator/CristinaHernandez (LA)
!!!'''Spell Specialization:''' [[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe Shields]]
[[quoteright:232:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0tio_29.png]]
[[caption-width-right:232:[[labelnote:Click to see her at 19 years old]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tio_age19.png[[/labelnote]]]]
A female 6-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch's closest friends. She acts as her partner Megumi's schedule-keeper.
----
* AmazonianBeauty: In the sequel, she's grown at least a few feet and gained noticeable muscles. She's also grown to be pretty as Megumi.
* AngerBornOfWorry: [[spoiler:In the sequel, after she discovers Zatch was resurrected, Tia beats the crap out of him for not telling her he would come back from the dead, as she was deeply hurt by his death.]]
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: In the Go Go Mamodo Fight video game, she can grow into a giant. In canon, this is zigzagged, however, as her father is even bigger than Rein, and she didn't inherit these genetics.
* AttackReflector: Giga Ra Seushiru traps the enemy in a barrier that reflects their spells back at them. However, as per the rules of the battle, a mamodo cannot burn their own book with their spells, so at most it causes an opponent to weaken themselves.
* BarelyChangedDubName: The English dub changed her name from Tio to Tia, presumably due to the latter sounding more feminine to Western ears.
* BarrierWarrior: Her spell theme is shields. Her attack spells are either weak or situational, but she has the most powerful defensive spells of all of the demon children.
* CombatMedic: ZigZagged. She does have attack spells, but the first is incredibly weak, the second is an AttackReflector that can be broken if the opponent's attack is too powerful for it to handle, and the third gets more powerful the more anger she pours into the spell. [[HairTriggerTemper Not exactly hard to build up the power]], but it's used up after one strike.
* CripplingOverspecialization: She has the strongest shield spells seen and is the only Mamodo who can heal others, but her attacks are either incredibly weak or highly situational. She never defeats another Mamodo on her own, but is an invaluable ally in group fights.
* TheDreaded: She's notoriously known to be a bully in the demon world, and ''well'' deserving of her nickname: Strangler.
* FieryRedhead: Tia is a redhead and has a reputation as "Tia the Strangler" back in the Mamodo World due to her tendency to (as her nickname suggests) strangle anyone who is unlucky enough to set off her ferocious temper, with Zatch frequently being the unfortunate target.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: She wears panties with childish prints.
* HealingShiv: Saifogeo, a giant magical sword that heals whoever it stabs. Stronger spells follow suit. Her ultimate spell creates four connected Saifogeo blades that restore everyone to full health.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's short-tempered and prone to strangle anyone who annoys her, but fiercely loyal and protective of her friends.
* LittleMissBadass: She's a little girl who can tank the enemy's most powerful spells, and routinely throttles poor Zatch, although the last one is PlayedForLaughs. Also mentions in passing that Megumi trained her in aikido.
* TheMedic: She can heal her allies once her Saifogeo spell is revealed.
* MeditatingUnderAWaterfall: She uses this to power up her defensive abilities and gain access to her strongest shield spell.
* PervertRevengeMode: When Momon looks at her panties, her wrath is enough to awaken her strongest attack spell, which is completely ''fueled by anger and hate''.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Chajiru Seshirudon is a barrier powered by her desire to protect her friends. Notably, it and its upgrade Rima Chajiru Seshirudon are the only shield spells she has that no one manages to break, and they were used against two main antagonists.
* ThePowerOfHate: Chajiru Saifodon, her strongest attack spell, is powered by her rage and hatred.
* PrecociousCrush: Subverted. She seems to have one on Kiyo, but it's quickly revealed that she's projecting her feelings for Zatch onto him to avoid admitting them.
* RecessiveSuperGenes: Her dad is as big, or maybe bigger, than Bago or Rein. Neither Tia, her little brother, or big sister are giants.
* RedBaron: Her nickname in the demon world is "Tia the Strangler," for reasons that become obvious in her interactions with Zatch.
* RescueRomance: She was initially just a friendly aquaintance of Zatch, but after he came to save her and proved to still be a noble-hearted individual, she falls for him.
* ShipperOnDeck: She seems to ship Kiyo and Megumi, noticing with a smile when Megumi once blushed at being called Kiyo's girlfriend.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She develops a growing attraction to Zatch, because he is a kind-hearted, compassionate, and caring individual.
* StoneWall: Her attack spells are much weaker than average with her basic Saisu spell being near useless against Mamodo. However, she makes up for this with multiple shield spells and the ability to heal damage.
* TomboynessUpgrade: In the original series, Tia had tomboyish traits, but her character and dressing style were still fairly girly. In the sequel, however, she has grown into a full-blown ActionGirl wearing pants and [[SleevesAreForWimps a sleeveless shirt to show off her muscular arms]].
* TookALevelInBadass: In the original series, Tia's spells are specialized in defense and healing, forcing her into a support role most of the time. In the sequel, she has become a very strong fighter who can stand on her own against an enemy army to protect other defenseless Mamodo from the invaders.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sweet type. She's usually pretty sweet all the time. Her angry and violent side mostly comes out around Zatch, who she has a crush on but also wants to strangle. Helps that she's voiced by Creator/RieKugimiya, who is known for voicing this type of characters.
* WhiteMage: She has few offensive spells, her abilities mainly focusing upon powerful shields to repel attacks and outlast her opponents, and she also possesses healing spells.

[[folder:Megumi Oumi]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AiMaeda (JP), Creator/KateHiggins (EN), Mar Bordallo (SP), Irina Índigo (LA)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0megumi_29.png]]
A 16-year-old Japanese student and pop idol with a kind heart. Her schedule keeps her extremely busy, but she established a close friendship with Kiyo through the events in the battle and enjoys time that she can spend with her friends.
----
* BettyAndVeronica: Veronica to Suzy's Betty because she's an IdolSinger Kiyo met during the tournament.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a nice older sister figure to Tia.
* DefeatByModesty: Narrowly averted in the Faudo arc; she nearly refuses to say [[AbhorrentAdmirer Unko Tin-tin/Poosophagus's]] name as part of a gag [[OnlySmartPeopleMayPass test of wisdom]].
* IdolSinger: Her profession is singing to crowds.
* NiceGirl: She's a very kind and friendly girl.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Downplayed. Megumi, that's generally good and sweet, purposefully made fun of Suzy a few times in an episode (that exists in the manga too) for no other reason except they were "fighting" over Kiyo's attention.
* OnlySaneWoman: Alongside Kiyo, though she's the sort to get amused while he gets angry.
* RescueRomance: It's pretty clear she fell for Kiyo the second he showed up to save her and Tia from Maruss. She returns the favor episodes later and even calls that "a date".
* ShipTease: With Kiyo. The anime had more frequent moments of hinting at Megumi's feelings toward Kiyo, sometimes even implying it's mutual. However, the manga did have one '''very''' prominent moment when Kiyo needed mouth-to-mouth and Megumi looking very gleeful at the chance to lock lips with him, with Tia even telling her its her opportunity.

A male 6-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch's closest friends; he would look like a normal child in pajamas were it not for the duckbill in place of his nose and mouth, with a tail bulge at his backside. Formerly weak and timid, he developed enough courage to stand alongside Zatch against powerful foes with the help of his transformative spells. Comic relief for much of the series but surprisingly resourceful.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Attempts to invoke this by going all the way to Japan to challenge Zatch, who has a reputation of being an even bigger loser than Kanchome is. He fails; by the time he finds Zatch, Zatch has grown so much that he's able to beat Kanchome effortlessly.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Particularly invoked in his fights with Bago and Goomu. He's a softie most of the time, but give him a reason to fight, and he's absolutely relentless. Especially in the latter case, where he's [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity drunk on the power of his strongest spell]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Kanchome's apparently useless power and ridiculous demeanor make him easy to underestimate. It's almost always a bad idea [[spoiler: especially after his training with Dufort.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** With Rusca, a little girl who he befriended while he got strayed in a rural village in Spain.
** In the sequel, he's protective of his little brother Consomme, having faced the invaders alone to keep him safe.
* BoisterousWeakling: At the start of the series, he has all of one tactic; transform into something big and scary, threaten the enemy to surrender, and pray they don't call his bluff.
* BoringButPractical: His most useful spell (initially) is one that shrinks him down to a tiny size. Practically useless in a straight up fight, nowhere near as impressive as the kind of spells that Zatch and others are capable of. However, in a competition where you can win by burning the opponent's book, this spell is ''deadly'' if Kanchome has a match.
* BreakTheCutie: The sequel has not been kind to Kanchome. Though initially it seems like he is still a bit of a coward because he fled during the initial attacks to demon world [[spoiler: it turns out that he had fled at his family's urging to protect his baby brother Consomme. While trying to escape people after his life and make his way to the human world to reunite with Folgore, he has to watch as his world is reduced to rubble by invaders bent on killing him and his kind. And just before he reunites with his old partner, his pursuers finally find him and he decides to perform a HeroicSacrifice just so that they don't kill his brother. Is it any wonder that by the time he's safe and sound he finally breaks down as he remembers his family before everything went to hell?]]
* CowardlyLion: He's a giant coward and a crybaby to boot, but he'll always swallow it when his friends need his help. Especially when his stronger spells give him more confidence.
* DeliciousDistraction: Candies, which actually led him to nothing but trouble.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Subverted. [[spoiler:When his book is burning, he initially is calm and reassures Papi that Zatch will become king and revive them both. Then he looks at Folgore's crying face and starts to break down, protesting that he can't leave yet because there's still so much they haven't done together.]]
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Once he figures out how to use his powers ''correctly'', they're useful, as he and Folgore figure out that Kanchome's power isn't shapeshifting and transforming, but ''illusions''. Kanchome's illusions are vital to a number of victories, and once he develops stronger techniques, he's arguably the strongest demon in the series. His 3 final spells allow him to trick a foe into canceling their attacks (by making them think the spell failed), use their own attacks against them (albeit only that particular mamodo) and most powerful, his illusion world, where the pain is real (at least through mental truama.) During a training session, he managed to ''beat Zatch.''
* HowDoIShotWeb: Part of why Kanchome is so pathetic to start with is that he has no idea how to use his powers effectively. He initially gets by just by bluffing, but this ultimately just gets him (and his partner) hurt. Dr. Riddles' [[spoiler: and later, Dufaux's]] mentoring teaches him how to use his powers strategically, which makes him ''far'' more useful in a fight.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: What he starts out as. He challenges Zatch to burn his book, but by the end of the fight Kiyo just feels like he and Zatch are bullying Kanchome.
* MagikarpPower: His spells are poorly suited for offensive purposes, and in the hands of two fools like Kanchome and Folgore, they're borderline useless. Through the power of hard work, training, and some direction from their friends, Kanchome becomes increasingly stronger through the tournament. By the time he's reached the King Festival [[spoiler: he's possibly become even stronger than Clear, as he has access to an unblockable YourMindMakesItReal MindRape attack.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: The true nature of his powers is in deceiving what the opponent perceives. [[spoiler: Particularly his final spell, which traps the target in a full illusionary world. WordOfGod says only those with honed sixth senses could escape without his say-so.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: Kanchomé often feels weak when fighting alongside his demon friends, especially during the Ancient Mamodo Arc when he and Kido were fighting Belgim EO. Kanchomé blames himself for Kido's book being burned by Belgium EO as a result of his weak powers and also for when Folgore almost died in the Faudo arc fighting against Keith.
* NoodlePeople: In the sequel, Kanchomé has grown taller, but his limbs are extremely long and spindly.
* OddballDoppelganger: He can transform into replicas of other characters, but they're far from perfect (though it's implied it's more out of inexperience than the spell itself.) One had a nose that would make Cyrano De Bergerac feel normal and another has a forehead as big as the torso. Luckily for him, the people he had to fool were idiots.
* OlderThanHeLooks: As a 19-years old in the sequel, Kanchomé is tall and lanky but his babyish face has not changed at all. Folgore finds him hilarious to look at.
* PromotionToParent: After the invaders got his parents and older brother, Kanchomé becomes the sole caretaker of his baby brother Consomme.
* SelfDuplication: The fourth spell, "Dima Buruk," produces eight Kanchomé clones, each with comparable speed and strength to a Rauzaruk-enhanced Zatch, depending on how much willpower Kanchomé pours into it.
* SensorCharacter: He gains the ability to sense other demons after the training with Dufaux.
* SupportPartyMember: Much like Tia, he has little to no offensive power, but is extremely helpful on a team due to his ability to provide distractions and camouflage.
* StoryBreakerPower: [[spoiler:His ultimate spell lets him make people feel anything he wants if they look at him or he touches them and lets him transform himself into any shape he wishes. Oh, and he can force enemies to cancel their own spells too. He's almost completely invincible, so he naturally gets taken out in a sucker punch by Clear when he's out of energy from beating Gorm.]]
* SweetTooth: He apparently lives entirely on candy and desserts.
* TookALevelInBadass: He takes three distinct ones throughout the series.
** Kiyo instructs him on how to use his transformations more effectively, by both giving himself physical attributes he can utilize like becoming a wheel to roll somewhere quickly and more convincing transformations that let him hide himself.
** Unlocking his ''Dika Buruk'' spell, which gives him powerful clones that lets him take part in combat directly.
** After several months of training [[spoiler: with Dufort]], he learns how to [[spoiler: directly affect the opponent's mind]], making his illusions unbeatable. He even beats ''Zatch'' in a practice match.
* TheVirus: Kanchomé's Mo Poruku spell turns him into a giant WaddlingHead with a stretching beak. When he swallows and munches anyone in this form, they are transformed, little by little, into clones of himself. This is seemingly an ''actual'' transformation on both sides rather than an illusion or brainwashing, disrupts the victims' abilities in many ways and forces them into speaking nothing but the word "Kanchomé". Like with Dima Buruk, he can focus his willpower to command the clones and so he must selectively transform his enemies into the form most useful to him.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: Compared to Zatch's electrical powers, Tia's shielding and healing abilities, and Ponygon's super-speed armor, transforming into something without any boost to stats seems a bit lame. But then [[MasterOfIllusion we see how strong his illusions really are...]]
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: His strongest spell begins driving him mad with power.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Initially, Kanchomé and Folgore believe that Kanchomé's power is shapeshifting, with Kanchomé's first two spells either transforming him into imperfect doppelgangers or shrinking him into the size of a mouse. It's revealed later on, starting with his third spell, "Dika Poruk", that his powers are actually ''illusions'', as "Dika Poruk" creates an illusionary version of a giant Kanchomé with the real Kanchomé hiding from behind.
* YourMindMakesItReal: [[spoiler: What makes his ultimate spell so powerful. The damage his foes would receive in his world of illusions would ''feel'' real and while no physical harm would come to them, he implies the fatigue and psychic damage would've drove them comatose.]]

[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0folgore_29.png]]
A 23-year-old Italian superstar. Goofy and something of a klutz and pervert, yet with a genuinely benevolent heart and iron will beneath the surface. He developed good terms with Kiyo and Zatch early on and became an ally from the Ancient Mamodo arc onward.
----
* AgentPeacock: A flamboyant pop singer with questionable taste in clothing and more endurance than any human.
* AnimalMotif: A notable example in that he rejects being coded as one animal to instead act like another; his huge hair, rugged good looks and open flamboyance call to mind a lion, but Folgore choses to be like a [[HuggyHuggyHippos hippo]] rather than a [[KingOfBeasts lion]] Turns out there is a reason for this comparison; [[spoiler: he viewed his fierce and aggressive past life as being like a lion. However, he beat anyone in his way to where he was feared by everyone in town and would end up even being kicked out of his home at gunpoint by his parents. He changed himself to the goofy pop star we all know when in a nearby town, he saw a documentary on hippos. He noted how despite their large appearance, birds were not afraid to be with them, showing his change to becoming an approachable and goofy person, yet still, someone quite strong, stronger than even lions are.]] TruthInTelevision since hippos are indeed more dangerous than lions despite their goofy exterior.
* BadassNormal: He can take Mamodo spells and keep fighting and is shown to be more than a match for human enemies. Actually fighting Mamodo is beyond him, however.
* {{Bowdlerize}}: 'Chichi wo moge/Groping Breasts/Pick the Boobies' becomes 'Hey Hey Let's Dance All Day'.
* ButtMonkey: Bordering with IronButtMonkey due to all his comic injuries. It ends up PlayedForDrama in the Faudo Arc, as taking so many hits from a mamodo as strong as Keith comes very close to killing him.
* ClothingDamage: Of the comic variety. Usually it's the back of his pants ripping, giving the audience a faceful of his bare naked ass.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's a flamboyant and silly man who still fights the good fight alongside his comrades and bears a surprisingly somber reason why he bears such a goofy demeanor.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Surprisingly enough, yes. [[spoiler:Was a feared juvenile delinquent who indulged in looking and acting tough who beat up anyone in his way back in his town. It led to being feared and shunned by his hometown before being kicked out by his own parents at gunpoint. His very goofy personality is shown to be a deliberate change from his fierce and serious self from when he was younger. He even compares his younger self as a lion and his current self as a hippo. He doesn't dwell on his past much, but brings it up with Kanchome begins falling prey to a similar mentality when Kanchome becomes DrunkWithPower. Even when he has cleaned up his act, his parents are still too scared to talk to him.]]
* DeathGlare: When he gets serious, his eyes take on the same designs as Gash, Zeon, and ''Ashuron'' to show his incredible willpower.
* {{Delinquents}}: [[spoiler: Used to be a feared one in his hometown, so much so that he was kicked out of his home by his own parents.]]
* TheDreaded: A tragic example. [[spoiler: He was obsessed with appearing and acting tough as a teenager. So much so that he became a violent deliquent who beat up anyone in his way. This led to him being feared by everyone in his hometown, including people he tried to help. Restaurants pretty much emptied when he went in and his own parents grew to fear to where they packed his bags and forced him to leave at gunpoint. And even when he cleaned up his act, his parents still don't talk to him.]]
* {{Determinator}}: It's pretty much impossible to get him to stay down. He's Iron Man Folgore!
* FunnyAfro: In the sequel his long hair is extremely spiky and puffy like an afro, not only enhancing his goofy dancer vibe but also giving him the appearance of a lion.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: Added in the dub to hide his original bare ass via clothing damage.
* HandsomeLech: A bit of a perverted yet very handsome fellow who enjoys his legions of fangirl.
* HiddenDepths: Sure he's a notorious womanizer, but he always finds time to visit sick kids in the hospital for a special performance. He also showcases considerable strength of will for a preppy pop star and has a strong heart befitting a good partner to a Mamodo. Then there's his past, revealing [[spoiler: his goofy side was deliberately developed to counteract his violent past as a delinquent, having to live with the fact that his parents are still too scared to talk to him to this day.]] The ''regret'' he speaks regarding this is palatable, him not wanting Kachome to fall down that same path.
* IdolSinger: He's an Italian one at that. Although it's implied that he's more popular in Japan than in his home country.
* LovableSexManiac: Come ON, his most popular song (in the original Japanese) is about boobs!
* MadeOfIron: He invariably takes more damage than Kanchome when the two are in battle. It never seems to slow him down for very long.
* MyGreatestFailure: His adolescent idealization of looking tough as [[spoiler: it motivated his delinquency and led to him being kicked out of his hometown out of fear of him.]]
* NeverAcceptedInHisHometown: A bit of a variation. To the world, he is a world-famous popstar and a friend to children. However, to his hometown, [[spoiler: he was a feared juvenile delinquent that beat anyone in his way to where the whole town was scared of him and even his own parents ''forced'' him out of home at '''''gunpoint.''''' He himself mentions that to this day, they're still afraid to talk to him.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Played with; he really ''is'' a skirt-chasing goofball, but it becomes clear as time goes on that he's playing up his silliness because he greatly values coming off as non-threatening. As things get more and more dire, we see more of his serious side, complete with a visible change in his overall demeanor.
* PapaWolf: It's made clear throughout the series that Folgore is a father figure to Kanchome, and that he's starving for a family after [[spoiler:he foolishly made his parents disown him]]. He takes pains to protect the boy and interrupts his career to look for him when he manages to get captured by the circus or shipped off across the sea. When he talks Kanchome out of abusing his powers or saves his life upon meeting him again in the sequel, he outright calls the duck-boy his child.
* SadClown: On the surface, he is a well-meaning but mildly annoying pop star who brings in a good deal of laughs. Dig a bit deeper and [[spoiler: you find he is a remorseful man who feels immense regret over how teenage desire to be a "lion" or a strong and powerful strong person led to him being shunned out of fear and ruined his relationship with his parents. To where his clownish exterior is a deliberate counteraction to it and his charity work likely out of kindness and atonement]]
* StoneWall: There's a reason why he's called Iron Man Folgore and Invincible Folgore. With a simple chant of that cheer, he can recover from many an injury.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: When Kanchome sings "Iron Man Folgore," Parco rises up to fight once more despite his injuries. This is subverted after Kiyo casts Zakeru several times, and he finds himself too numb to try and stand up again. This is played for laughs in the manga, where he's shown trying to slink away in fear from Kanchome's singing.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: [[spoiler: His past as a terrifying delinquent still haunts his hometown and its inhabitants, including his parents, who are still too scared to talk to him.]]

[[quoteright:195:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0umagon_29.png]]
A male 4-year-old Mamodo in the shape of a child-sized horse and one of Zatch's closest friends. Incapable of speech due to his youth, he was stuck with a debilitating nickname. Zatch befriended him before the battle, and though Schneider had reservations about participating in the battle, his loyalty to Zatch made him more actively seek his partner, and he stood alongside his friends from the moment he could make a difference. His spells focus around speed and armor with one of his prominent spells allowing him to control fire.
----
* AdaptiveArmor: [[spoiler:His ultimate armor spell in the manga can shapeshift]].
* AppropriatedAppellation: Schneider initially hates it when Kiyo calls him "Umagon" ("monster horse")[=/=]Ponygon ("you're like a pony and I want you gone"), but is unable to properly communicate this to anyone. By the end of the series he's fond enough of the nickname that he still lets Gash and the others use it, not even bothering telling Sunbeam his real name when finally taught a method to do so in one of the "Gash Café" chapters.
* BoringButPractical: His true forte is [[SuperSpeed speed]]. Sure it's not as flashy as throwing lightning bolts, but he can dodge almost anything and hit pretty hard thanks to it.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Initially, he's shown to eagerly want to meet his bookmaster and join in the battle, showing his book to almost everyone he meets, fantasizing about saving the day alongside his partner, and his antipathy towards Kiyo is attributed to him being Zatch's partner and therefore ineligible to be Ponygon's. When the Ancient Mamodo arc rolled around, however, Ponygon is shown to be deeply afraid of battle, terrified when it looks like he's found his bookmaster, and his dislike of Kiyo is explained to be because Kiyo's presence compels Zatch to take part in the battle. An explanation could be that it's very easy to ''imagine'' doing something, but ''actually doing it'' is a whole other matter.
* CowardlyLion: He initially didn't want to find his partner due to a fear of battle. He gets over it when his friends need him to step up.
* FireForgedFriends: He hated Zatch when they first met until Zatch helped him save his father's life. He also hated Kiyo when he arrived in the human world since Kiyo was already Zatch's partner, and so Umagon had no reason to befriend him until he found his partner, Kafka Sunbeam, and they started fighting alongside Zatch and Kiyo.
* GoodIsNotNice: It's perhaps indicative of the seriousness of the situation, but during the fight to stop Faudo, Ponygon attempts to defeat the stronger Rodeaux by ''broiling his partner alive.''
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Almost runs himself literally to death bringing Zatch to the final battle with Clear Note. Sunbeam has Megumi burn his book before he actually dies.]]
* HeroicRROD: His [[spoiler:''Shin'' spell is too powerful for him to handle, injuring him when he uses it. This is what causes his defeat, he runs until his body is falling apart and he needs to be sent back to the Mamodo world before he dies.]]
* HowDoIShotWeb: At first he has a hard time controlling his flames, often burning Sunbeam on accident.
* InstantArmor: The effect of every spell he learns.
* JerkassToOne: Ponygon manages to get along with everyone he meets except Kiyo, who he is distrustful and mean towards every time Kiyo interacts with him; the reason why he was so mean to Kiyo was because he was already Zatch's human partner, and Ponygon was merely looking for his own would-be human partner, being lonely and hostile to people otherwise, so he had no reason to befriend Kiyo. After Kiyo decides to take Ponygon in until he finds his would-be human partner, they get along much better, particularly after Ponygon finally finds his human partner, Kafka Sunbeam.
* MeaningfulName: Invoked by Kiyo, who disliked him at the time, by giving him the name Umagon. Roughly, it means "horse monster". In English, he names him Ponygon because "he's a pony and I want him gone."
* NeverMyFault: When he first meets Kiyo, he doesn't even attempt to get along with him, since he knows Kiyo can't be his partner because he is already Zatch's partner. When Kiyo eventually hits his RageBreakingPoint after Ponygon bites his hand when he tries to be nice to him, he kicks him out of his house and Ponygon runs off crying, acting as if he didn't deserve to be yelled at.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: He keeps trying to tell everyone his name is Schneider, but nobody understands him, not even his partner who can interpret literally anything else that he says. [[spoiler:Once they are back to the demon world, he has grown fond of the Umagon/Ponygon name, even though everyone already knows his real name]].
* PlayingWithFire: His spells have the ability to create armor that not only grants him more power and speed but grants him manipulation of the element of fire.
* SensorCharacter: Gains the ability to sense other demons after the training with Dufaux.
* TookALevelInBadass: His book owner was late to the party, but once he shows up.... Does it again in the Clear Note Arc, showing up with long hair and a startlingly muscular physique.
* TookALevelInKindness: Ponygon gets along much better with Kiyo after the latter realizes just how lonely and distrustful Ponygon was towards people and his niceness towards everyone else were just his attempts to find his would-be human partner, eventually taking him in until he found his human partner. It's much more profound after Ponygon finally finds his human partner, Kafka Sunbeam.
* TheUnintelligible: To everyone but Sunbeam and fellow horse Karudio, though Sunbeam still can't understand his name and Karudio never tells anyone because he's sort of a dick like that. Only in a "Gash Café" chapter does the obvious solution of having Ponygon spell sentences by pointing at a set of letters like Rops does to talk with Apollo come up.

A quirky but intelligent 32-year-old German technician capable of seeing into others’ hearts. Though he met Schneider late into the battle, they established a bond quickly and were almost flawless together. Comically, though he can understand anything else Schneider says due to their bond, he's unable to understand his real name.
----
* AdultsAreUseless: [[DefiedTrope Awesomely defied]] since he's one of the older contenders in the fight, and holds himself to the ideal of being a "cool adult" (i.e. an adult who is reliable and trustworthy). In his first battle alone, he rescued Kiyomaro and Gash from quicksand, threw sand in an opposing demon's eyes, and even unlocked his second spell.
* CatchPhrase: "GROOVY!" and "ROCK 'N ROLL!"
* ContinuityNod: In a breather chapter, everyone is trying to learn to ice skate, but [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption all fail spectacularly]]. Sunbeam is especially livid, banging and cursing the ice (as it wasn't that much later from his fight against Sauza and Karudio).
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: His hair is grown out and worn long for the Clear Note fight, the result of his training in Africa.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Animals love him, and he can understand their thoughts. Indeed, part of his and Ponygon's training was in the African wilderness. The epilogue shows him living in an African animal sanctuary while helping to start automobile factories in Africa.
* GermanicEfficiency: A mild example. Sunbeam is a German engineer, specializing in automobiles. The epilogue shows him helping out by starting automobile factories in Africa.
* GratuitousEnglish: Very fond of random English words in the Japanese version, most notably "Groovy!"
* {{Irony}}: He can understand Ponygon very well... except for his name ''Schneider'' which is a '''German'' name.
* ShipTease: With nun and fellow book holder Elle Chivas. The epilogue shows she's living with him in Africa.

A male 14-year-old humanoid Mamodo clad in Goth attire who served as a de facto rival to Zatch, and one of the four prodigies. He received special training in the demon world that made him elite among demon children, allowing him to deflect weaker spells with his bare hands. A ruthless warrior formerly condescending toward humans, he matured into a strict but ultimately kind individual through the battle. His power over Gravity can bring any opponent to their knees.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: No matter how strong Kiyo and Zatch get, they're always looking at Brago's back, and they know it. Fortunately, Brago is content to let them try to close the gap before they fight for real.
* BigDamnHeroes: He met Sherry when he intercepted one of Zofis' spells shot at her, saving her life.
* BigEater: Most mamodo are. But he is seen eating a whole crocodile. [[PrefersRawMeat Raw]]. And he finishes the whole thing before Sherry is even halfway through her own meal.
* TheBigGuy: In the sequel, Brago is the biggest of Zatch's main Mamodo allies. Also, he's strong enough to instantly behead enemies with his fists alone, with no need of spells.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: Sherry initially forces him to accept her as the leader of their duo by threatening to kill herself. As she's his one and only bookmaster and without her he doesn't have a prayer of winning the contest, he has no choice but to yield to her demands.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In his first appearance he accepts Sherry sparing Zatch and Kiyo with barely a token protest and she remarks that he seems almost pleased to have a new rival. This wouldn't be out of character for Brago ''after'' his CharacterDevelopment, but his later appearances depict him as far more ruthless, brutal, and willing to bark back at Sherry and he gradually softens into a calmer and more reasonable individual.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Zigzagged. Brago is visually terrifying, with dark clothes, a black spellbook, and spells with dark visual effects. At the start of the series, he's so aggressive and hostile towards others that Sherry had to threaten to kill herself to rein him in. By the end of the series, however, he's grown into a JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
* TheDreaded: He's pretty feared among the Mamodo as a scary guy. They're right. Zatch's friends are stunned when they hear he even ''survived'' a run-in with Brago.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: He has goth-like clothing, jet-black hair, and a pale complexion.
* FamedInStory: Just as Zatch was well known to all the other mamodo as a useless weakling before arriving on Earth, Brago was known to the rest of the mamodo children as a complete terror. All of Zatch's mamodo allies are absolutely shocked that Zatch actually faced Brago and was still around to talk about it when they find out.
* GoodIsNotNice: Even after he mellows out, he's aggressive, ruthless, and aloof. Part of it is an act, but mostly that's just the way he is.
* GravityIsPurple: Most of his gravity spells are either black, purple, or both.
* GravityMaster: All of his spells are based on gravity.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: He and Sherry are already veterans of the Mamodo War when they first encounter Zatch and Kiyo and it's clear that they've had more than their share of adventures of which we only see snippets of. Their paths generally cross with Zatch and Kiyo on occasions but it isn't until the final arc that they choose to work together with them.
* {{Hunk}}: In the sequel, 27-year-old Brago is an insanely muscular, huge, and manly man.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmxbdvTmgts Hijou no Victory]]"[[note]]"Merciless Victory"[[/note]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In his initial debut, he comes off as generally rude and doesn't think highly of humans until he undergoes some CharacterDevelopment. By the end of the series, the "jerk" part has faded. He desires to become a strict, but kind king. When Zatch grows stronger, he acknowledges it without a hint of anger. He also acts as though Sherry's weakness frustrates him, but he cares for her ''far'' more than he lets on. He actually does manage to be openly affectionate towards her [[spoiler: as his book is burning.]]
* KungFuWizard: In the sequel, Brago has grown into a huge and muscular man capable of punching an enemy's head off with his ''bare fist'', with no need for Sherry to cast a gravity spell. Kiyo points out that Brago clearly doesn't even ''need'' to use magic to win a fight now.
* MundaneUtility: His Reisu spell, basically a ball of physical gravity, is used more than once to push people to a safe spot.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: "The demon of the black book" is an intimidating description.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Though he's basically always serious in the story, in a (not-quite-canon) side comic, he gets pressured into doing a song and dance routine with Sherry, and he finds that he actually really enjoys it.
* OneManArmy: He basically solos the bulk of Zofis's thousand-year-old demon army, and the only reason he has any trouble at all is the need to separate the brainwashed masters from the crowd before he can use his stronger spells.
* PerpetualFrowner: His facial expression alwaus seems stuck in an angry frown.
* PetTheDog: At the end of the Zophis arc, [[spoiler: Sherry and Brago have finally saved Koko and taken down Zophis. As they prepare to burn his book, Zophis remarks that while his brainwashing of Koko will dissappear as he returns to the demon world, the memories of the awful things they committed while partners will remain and haunt her for life. In response to this Brago threatens to spend the rest of his life hunting down and tormenting Zophis, out of no personal obligation but instead out of a desire to protect the people Sherry loves.]]
* PostClimaxConfrontation: [[spoiler:The battle with Clear Note is clearly the climax of the story, with the fate of both worlds being at stake. However, both Zatch and Brago remain standing at it's end, leaving the final question of who the Mamodo King will be. However, Kiyo asks for a postponement of their final match, so the two of them will have time to say goodbye, as win or lose Zatch will have to return home after the battle. So they meet again 3 months later after Kiyo's graduation for a battle between friendly rivals rather than bitter enemies. Said fight lasts only one chapter before Zatch comes out as winner.]]
* ReestablishingCharacterMoment: In the sequel, Brago's reintroduction has him bursting out of his coffin after Sherry revives him. He then proceeds to brutally maim an enemy invader with his ''bare fists'', with little to no help from Sherry casting gravity spells.
* TheRival: Towards Zatch, eventually. For most of the contest, Zatch and Kiyo view Brago as the one they have to surpass to win. By the time they finally fight again, Brago has come to see Zatch as a WorthyOpponent rather than a runt.
* SensorCharacter: He has a sixth sense that has helped him find other demons, and it only gets stronger after his training under Dufaux's instruction.
* SociopathicHero: Generally rude and doesn't think highly of humans. He even threatened the life of Sherry's butler once. To remind, Brago is no more than 15. Subverted after plenty of CharacterDevelopment.
* StockShonenRival: Brago is the cold, antisocial, rough, brooding, and arrogant rival of the cheerful and idealistic StockShonenHero. He is also one of the Four Prodigies, four Mamodo children so mighty that only adults could fight them.
* TheStoic: He generally doesn't react much to anything.
* SuperStrength: Is monstrously strong even for a Mamodo to the point of being fully capable of defeating weaker Mamodo without using spells at all. The anime even shows Brago overpowering a Rauzaruk enhanced Zatch with ease.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He had this opinion of teaming up with a human from the beginning, and it took until the Ancient Mamodo arc for him to fully accept Sherry.
* TookALevelInKindness: In a flashback, it's revealed that Brago used to be much more violent and aggressive than he is now and firmly believed that VirtueIsWeakness and that ThePowerOfHate was the only way to awaken the spellbook's true power. When he first met Sherry, he had no problem hitting her when she acts in a way that he perceived as weak and even threatened to kill her butler if she wouldn't listen to his demands. Over time, he definitely mellows out, becoming more focused, calmer and more compassionate.
* TrainingFromHell: He went through some unspecified "Elite Training". Whatever it was, it was enough to make him one of the favorites to win the battle.
* VillainRespect: After Zatch takes massive levels in badass Brago comments on it without a hint of anger.
* TheWorfEffect:
** Is one of the strongest contenders of the Mamodo War and has dominated almost every battle he's participated in. Consequently, him getting utterly thrashed by Clear Note shows just how dangerous Clear is.
** In the sequel, Brago is said to have been jumped on and killed by a group made of the best of the best in Beliel's army, including what seems to be the infamous Goren. Once revived, Brago is shown to be so powerful that he can easily explode people with his punches in a one-on-one fight, conveying that the warriors who ambushed him must have been that much dangerous.

An 18-year-old French heiress raised in wealth and luxury by a demanding mother. Her only friend was Koko, and when the demon Zofis stole Koko away, she submitted herself to Brago's training and the battle itself solely to get her back, developing fighting skills that allowed her to hold her own against demons. After Zofis's defeat, she swore to make Brago king for sealing Koko's happiness.
----
* ActionMom: In the sequel, Sherry immediately dives into action when Beliel's henchmen attempt to kidnap her children.
* AwfulWeddedLife: In the sequel, Sherry's husband publicly cheats on her, to the point her own children and most people in the town know of his affairs, and neglects her and their three children. She does love her children, but her discontent shows in her face when someone brings up her husband's unfaithfulness.
* BadassNormal: Unlike other bookkeepers, who usually just stand back and casts spells, she joins the fray as much as Brago, usually fighting the opposing bookkeeper.
* BreakingTheCycleOfBadParenting: Sherry's mother was horribly abusive, to the point that her abuse nearly pushed a very young Sherry to kill herself. In the sequel, Sherry is shown to have grown up into a good and kind mother to her own children. One of her kids does complain about Sherry being an EducationMama, but she still tries to give her children a better childhood than she had and is always willing to listen to them.
* CaneFu: She has a cane for all purposes which doubles as a whip.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: She starts off about as tough as you'd expect a genteel 18-year-old girl to be. After training herself to keep up with Brago, she's tough enough to floor some Mamodo.
* ChildhoodFriends: Koko was her first friend as a kid and saved her life. Enough for it being her sole motivation in the Mamodo fight (at least until CharacterDevelopment.)
* DefrostingIceQueen: She warms up considerably to Kiyo and the rest of the group after Koko's rescue.
* {{Determinator}}: The sequel shows she hasn't lost her determination as an adult, being able to continue fighting against Beliel's henchmen even after their break her legs with one of the gravity spells they stole from Brago.
* EducationMama: The sequel mentions that Sherry makes her three children go to cram school and take multiple extracurricular lessons. To her credit, she tries to not put too pressure on her children, unlike how her own mother treated her, and is willing to hear their complaints when they're stressed out.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: She's a French noblewoman wearing a light purple dress.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: She and Brago are already veterans of the Mamodo War when they first encounter Zatch and Kiyo and it's clear that they've had more than their share of adventures of which we only see snippets of. In particular, Sherry's quest to save Koko is her primary motivation to win the war and what parts of their adventure we do see tend to be devoted to seeing her reaffirming that. Their paths generally cross with Zatch and Kiyo on occasions but it isn't until the final arc that they choose to work together with them.
* HimeCut: She's a noblewoman sporting parted blunt bangs, bra strap length sidelocks, and waist length straight hair.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: She struggles to wake BrainwashedAndCrazy Koko, who insists that she turned evil out of her own free will.
* InterclassFriendship: Despite being rich, Sherry never judged Koko for being poor and considered her to be her dearest friend since childhood.
* InterruptedSuicide: As a little girl, she couldn't take her mother's abuse and attempted to drown herself, but Koko saved her.
* IOweYouMyLife: She's still alive today because Koko stopped her suicide attempt when they were children. Because of this, Sherry will do anything to save Koko from Zofis' clutches.
* LadyOfWar: In the middle of the series, she's body-slamming mamodo like it's nothing and all while wearing a frilly pink dress.
* MamaBear: In the sequel, she protects her three children from Beliel's henchmen.
* MiseryTrigger: In the sequel, she makes a miserable face whenever her cheating husband is mentioned.
* NobilityMarriesMoney: In the sequel, she's married to some unfaithful businessman to mantain her family's status as feudal lords.
* {{Ojou}}: She's the heiress of a French noble family.
* OjouRinglets: As a sign of her rich-heiress status, her hair styled into ringlets even during battle.
* PetTheDog: She spares Zatch and Kiyo the first time because she ultimately feels that they share a similar motivation (trying to save their friend) and by tearing friends apart, she'd be no better than Zofis.
* RichBitch: Downplayed. She's not a snob, but she is kind of bitchy most of the time. [[FreudianExcuse Though her cruel upbringing more than justifies that, especially since it led to a suicide attempt as a child.]] Further downplayed in the sequel series.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: To Zofis. She very candidly threatens Dr. Riddles not to so much as touch Zofis before she has a shot at him.
* ShoutOut: May be one to Franchise/{{Castlevania}}, due to her last name of Belmont and the whip she wields later in the series.
* SilkHidingSteel: She has the wardrobe and mannerisms of a noblewoman. She also has a cold, confident ruthlessness that matches Brago's own and is able to go toe-to-toe with demons and win. And the sequel series shows that she's still as strong as ever when she needs to be.
* StopOrIShootMyself: When she first met Brago, when it became clear that he only saw her as a tool to win the war with and tried kill her butler to get his way she responds by coldly threatening to slit her own throat if he wouldn't comply with her orders, pointing out that he couldn't use his spells without her and making it clear that ''she'' was the one calling the shots here. It's implied that this event had such an impact on Brago that it was the beginning of his CharacterDevelopment from a violent and selfish brute to a stern but noble warrior.
* TheUnfettered: She hasn't completely abandoned her morals, but she won't tolerate anything that stands between her and saving Koko. After she succeeds, she turns that same ruthlessness towards making her partner king.

!!Wonrei and Li-en
[[folder:Both]]
* InterspeciesRomance: They're a Mamodo and human pairing, as well as a romantic couple. This is part of the reason Li-en's father disapproves of their relationship.
* StarCrossedLovers: Li-en's father does everything in his power to keep her apart from Wonrei, but yields when Wonrei is willing to defy him at gunpoint without flinching. Even when that's finished, however, both of them know that it won't last, given that Wonrei has to return to the demon world eventually.

A male 15-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch's close friends. He seeks to be strong for the sole purpose of protecting those whom he cares for. Alone among the known demons in the battle, he fell in love with his partner, Li-en, who returned his feelings. He learned kung fu from Lee Yen, making him a powerful fighter even without his spells, but the two grew together perfectly to make him even more dangerous.
----
* BareFistedMonk: His spells come in the form of powerful punches and kicks. And that's even before Li-en teaches him martial arts.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: Li-en taught him Chinese kung fu, which he can use alongside his spells to devastating effect.
* {{Determinator}}: Has a tendency to fight through even life-threatening injuries on the strength of sheer willpower alone. About the only way to stop him is to make him physically incapable of fighting back.
* FaceHeelTurn: In the Faudo arc, to save Li-en from Riou's curse. He changes back the moment it is lifted.
* MustMakeAmends: He stays back to hold off Unko Tintin despite the protests of his allies so he can make up for turning on them and siding with Leo.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Unko Tintin kicks the absolute crap out of him, due to being separated from Li-en and unable to use spells.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Though generally he's rather cool, collected, and mature compared to his mamodo allies (which makes sense as he's a teenager while they are all no older than 6), he is rather jealous of the TV Kafka has and is pretty put out that he and Li-en don't have time to buy one while in Japan as they don't have one at all.
* SenselessSacrifice: A bit of one. He pulls a YouShallNotPass on Unko Tintin, but the rest of the group didn't want him to and spend a lot of time trying to get back to him rather than continuing on.
* UnconsciousObjector: At the end of their fight, Unko Tintin isn't sure if Wonrei is still conscious or not.
* WorfEffect: A painfully straight case against Demolt. Approaching the battle, Kiyo thinks to himself that Wonrei and Li-en are stronger than him and Zatch. Then he enters the room and sees Wonrei impaled by Demolt.
* YouShallNotPass: Holds off Unko Tintin.

A kind 16-year-old martial artist woman native to Hong Kong. Daughter of a mafia leader, she was unable to meet a lover who didn’t fear her father too much until she met Wonrei. She befriended Zatch and Kiyo when her father tried to separate Wonrei from her and she requested their help and was a close ally of theirs from then on.
----
* AnimeChineseGirl: She is from China, and so she wears a fighting outfit that resembles a mandarin gown, practices martial arts and has hair up in buns.
* FauxActionGirl: Wonrei normally does the fighting, after all, and the one time she gets to blows with an antagonist she's quickly taken down, despite supposedly being skilled in martial arts herself. To her credit, she does do well against {{Mooks}} but most other enemies are just stronger than a human could be.
* MafiaPrincess: Her father is an unspecified high-roller in the Hong Kong underworld. She's rather unhappy with the ordeal since it means she has little friends and any potential boyfriends would not want to be with her out of fear of her dad.
* StandardFemaleGrabArea: Despite being a skilled martial artist, she's left helpless when one of her father's henchmen grabs her by the wrist. This is rather odd because her reaction to Wonrei doing this in their first encounter was to deliver a swift kick to his head.
* WomanScorned: In an filler episode, she doesn't take it well when she thinks Wonrei is cheating on her.

A male 8-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch's friends. Much smaller than normal children, resembling a ventriloquist doll, but backed up by powerful spells. He idolized his partner, the wise, clever, and mischievous Dr. Riddles, and wanted nothing more than to be as cool as him. Somewhat naïve, he always fell for Dr. Riddles’ jokes when he was kidding around.
----
* EasilyImpressed: He's constantly amazed by Dr. Riddles's tall tales, no matter how unrealistic they are.
* EnergyWeapon: One of his primary means of attack is to produce a small cannon from his mouth that shoots a powerful energy beam.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Dr Riddles. He had completely lost the will to live until Kido came into his life and gave it meaning again.
* MiniMook: His Koburuku spell summons a bunch of mini Kidos... from his mouth.
* MoreDakka: The other primary means of attack, turning his arms into miniature gatling guns
* ReplacementGoldfish: After the reveal of his backstory, some of Riddles' thoughts suggest he sees Kido as his grandson as well.
* SuperGullible: No matter how many times he falls for it, he still gets blown away by his book owner's obviously exaggerated stories only to get devastated when the Dr. Riddles reveals he was just kidding.
* TookALevelInBadass: Kido really kicks his combat prowess up a notch when the Professor is badly injured by Belgim E.O.

Kido revitalized him, and he came to develop a limited version of the Answer Talker ability. He was responsible for amassing forces to combat the Ancient Demons.

After losing Kido to the Belgim E.O., he continued to monitor demon threats and assist Gash and Kiyomaro wherever it was possible.
----
* BigGood: He's the one who gathers the book users and demons to fight Zofis and the one that calls the shots. Downplayed in the Faudo arc when he plays a role in gathering allies and information, but cannot directly participate in the conflict due to no longer having a demon partner.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: He's associated with an interrogation mark that decorates things like his top hat and the front of his hospital.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Kidding!" or in Japanese, "It's a lie!"
* CoolOldGuy: That he can keep up with all of the craziness going on around him is astonishing. His age does catch up with him every once and a while, though. In the sequel he is in his eighties and appears to be bedridden, but remains unflappable when an assassin appears in his bedroom.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Nearly fatally, the fact that Belgim E.O. can stand up out of his chair takes Dr. Riddles completely by surprise.
* TheGadfly: Many times, when Kido explains something Dr. Riddles had explained earlier, Dr. Riddles will just exclaim his CatchPhrase.
* GivenNameReveal: After Clear Note's defeat, Dr. Riddles resumes work as a public figure and his name is revealed to be Howard Friedman.
* HeroicBSOD: When Kido finds him, the doctor is sitting in a mansion, surrounded by shelves of books and doing nothing with his knowledge. Then we find out why: [[spoiler: he failed to save his grandson during his surgery.]]
* IOweYouMyLife: When Kido showed up, Dr. Riddles was just sitting at home waiting to die. He credits Kido with saving his life by dragging him out and giving him something else to live for.
* InexplicablyAwesome: He knows almost everything, from the nature of the Mamodo spell books to Megumi's phone number, with no explanation given other than that he is the Riddle Professor.
* InsufferableGenius: "I'm Professor Riddles, the one who knows ALL!" Everyone is annoyed, even—no, ''especially'' TeenGenius Kiyo.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's an incorrigible troll, and delights in insulting Kiyo even as he's gathering heroic demons to face the BigBad. Kiyo is left wanting to both strangle him and thank him.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: PlayedForLaughs in his debut, when he presents a group of supermen before Kiyo just to ask him which among them is the odd one out. When a dumbfounded Kiyo points to the plain MsFanservice Big Boing, Riddles comically acts like he's suffered a crushing defeat and retreats -- but only to knock on Kiyo's door the next day with a big grin on his face.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: It's implied here and there that he may have the Answer Talker ability, especially since a couple of close-ups show he has the telltale eye circles, but nothing has been confirmed. Would explain how he knows a lot though.
* MyGreatestFailure: He used to be a surgeon. Then he failed to save a child, and the guilt drove him into seclusion. In the original, the child's also his grandson.
* NamedAfterSomeoneFamous: He's named after Howard Steven Friedman, a real American doctor.
* TeamDad: For the team, he somewhat subverts this. He is the oldest among them and acts as their mentor, but behaves more like an annoying older brother than a paternal figure.
* TricksterMentor: Incorrigible troll though he is, he's still very smart and heavily implied to be at least a little bit psychic. He did help Kiyomaro understand the nature of the spellbook and teach him a new spell in the process when they sparred. And when he sparred with Tia and Megumi, they learned ''two'' new spells.
* {{Troll}}: He's always winding Kiyo up. He also likes to annoy Kiyo by bringing Lady Susan (Big Boing in Japanese) around. When she starts performing a song about her breasts for Kiyo in his house, the professor is seen trying to stifle a laugh.

He met the Mamodo Rops while spending his time wandering the world, experiencing as much freedom as he could before he became a corporate executive. He has the ability to sense an opponent’s actions and emotions and won most of his battles easily, though never burning any books; he had little interest in the demon battle, to Rops’s ire, until they met Zatch and Kiyo and fought to a draw.

Apollo served as a close ally to Kiyomaro after losing Rops to Zeon and Dufort, his resources proving invaluable against the Ancient Demons, Faudo, and Clear Note.
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He has an unspecified ability to predict incoming attacks.
* BadassNormal: He has high reflexes that enable him to dodge things most humans can't, such as shards of stone from an explosion and even Mamodo spells.
* ShipperOnDeck: Refers to Megumi as Kiyo's girlfriend.
* UnclePennybags: He's the head of a financial group, and is the one to provide the heroes with private planes and such for their battles.
* WalkingTheEarth: He was a wanderer before he met Rops. After his book is burned, however, he returns to his family's business.
* TheWorfEffect: He fights Kiyo and Zatch to a standstill and is later defeated by Zeno with ''contemptuous'' ease to show the latter's power. Dufort also proves this to Apollo's own AwesomenessByAnalysis ability by nonchalantly strolling through one of Rops's spells, showing how much stronger his [[CombatClairvoyance Answer Talker]] ability is.

A male humanoid Mamodo with a monkey’s face and pink rabbit ears not unlike a hood, and one of Zatch's friends. Perverted and timid, he developed courage and strength upon spending time with Zatch and his friends. He has the rare ability to sense the presence of demons and their spells anywhere in the world; through this, he avoided encountering any other demons until a chance encounter with Kiyomaro in Japan.
----
* ActualPacifist: He never learns a single attack spell, with the closest he gets being a beam that slows the target down.
* BadassPacifist: His spells are mostly tricky, totally non-combative, and very formidable when used properly. This combined with his Mamodo sensing skills means that he was able to utterly beatdown TheDragon of the Faudo Arc through evasion, exhaustive tactics and deflection.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: In the Faudo Arc's final battle, he beats Rodeaux, Zeno's incredibly deadly [[TheDragon Dragon]], to a pulp despite having zero offensive skills. By combining his Mamodo-sensing skills along with his spells that allow him to move quickly, slow down foes and even deflect attacks, he's able to run the much stronger Mamodo ragged. He's in control for the entire fight, and only loses because Rodeaux takes a cheap shot at Elle.
* CharacterDevelopment: Become less perverted and more courageous as the story marches on.
* CowardlyLion: He spends the whole Faudo Arc shivering and hiding. But when the chips are down, he takes on the Arc's CoDragons ''effortlessly''.
* DemotedToExtra: [[spoiler:Given he fights alongside Zatch for almost the entire Faudo arc, he has a noticable absence from the golden book sequence in the final arc. 517* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: He lacks any truly combat-based spells. Instead, he has strange spells involving jumping on air, stretching his arms or distort attacks. He's able to use this and Mamodo sensing skills to utterly manhandle TheDragon powered up throughout the whole fight.
* HyperAwareness: His demon sensing skills are so sharp he can dodge attacks without looking at them, often with a minuscule margin of error. As noted above, when combined with his spells that let him do things like jump on air, he's virtually untouchable.
* MundaneUtility: The first time Elle has to read the book, he uses each spell to get a look at Tia's panties.
* NotIfTheyEnjoyedItRationalization: In a "Gash Café" chapter which is framed as set after the main story, Momon is still a pervert openly talking about how he finds embarrassed girls cute. When Earth scolds him for upsetting them with harassment, Momon has the gall to claim that they must be happy to blush so much and gets the stuffing beaten out of him by the women around him in response.
* PantyThief: Although he's not above bras and swimsuits either. He eventually openly rejects this [[spoiler:as his book is burning]], deciding he instead wants to emulate Kiyomaro by studying and gaining knowledge to help the demon world.
-->'''Momon:''' When I get back to the demon world, I'm gonna start studying. I won't be helping the world by stealing panties and flipping skirts. [...] I'll study and become smart like Kiyomaro. Then it'll be my turn to protect the people precious to me... and the world...
* PinocchioNose: His lips get longer whenever he lies.
* SecretArt: Subverted. He's one of the few Mamodo who we ''don't'' see his ultimate spell being used. [[spoiler: Even in the end, when Zatch obtains the golden spellbook, Momon's contribution is simply to help power up Baou Zakeruga rather than provide an ultimate spell]].
* SensorCharacter: He is able to sense other demons at a notably long range even compared to other characters with demon-sensing abilities, which helped him avoid other demons before meeting Zatch and Kiyomaro. It's because of Momon that Zatch and Kiyo's group were able to find Faudo before his resurrection.

A somewhat timid nun who wished to spread a word of peace about the demon battle and disliked the thought of hurting anyone. Despite the disparity in their personalities, she and Momon had a close bond, and his desire to make her smile was what allowed him to find his courage and strength.
----
* HiddenDepths: She's VERY good at singing, especially Beethoven's ''Ode to Joy'' in ''fluent German.''
* NaiveNewcomer: She enters into the series roughly half-way through but has no experience with Mamodo battles. This is lampshaded when she freaks out at the sight of Tia's Saisu, possibly the weakest attack spell in the series. Kiyo remarks that Elle's reaction is what you'd expect from an ordinary person and takes it as confirmation that she was telling the truth when she claimed to have never met another Mamodo.
* NervousTics: She constantly says "Oyoyoyoyoyo" whenever she's nervous.
* NunTooHoly: Played a bit, if her budding romance with Sunbeam is any indication.
* ParentalSubstitute: ''Tries'' to be one for Momon anyway, yet despite his perverted nature and never listening to her, Elle still cares for him and tries her best to protect him when his antics get him into trouble. She ''is'' a nun after all.
* ShipTease: With Kafka Sunbeam. She does end up living with him in Africa after all.
* TechnicalPacifist: She abhors violence, as expected of a nun. Yet she is still a reliable compatriot in the Mamodo fight. Appropriately, her partner never learns a single offensive spell, yet does quite well without them and she is proud that he never had to attack anyone and of his commitment to better himself.
* WhatTheHellHero: She slaps Momon and chews him out after he continues to cower in fear despite the high stakes of the battle and the way everyone else around him is showing more courage.

A male 14-year-old Mamodo with an androgynous and doll-like appearance, and the first major villain that Zatch faced. He possesses the natural ability to manipulate others’ hearts, and began the battle by turning his partner Koko from selfless and kind to as malicious and ruthless as he. He revived the Ancient Mamodos and brought them under his control in an attempt to become king. Though an imperial sort who would prefer leaving the fighting to others, his ability to fly, genius intellect, and Explosion-based spells make him no pushover if he must dirty his own hands.
----
* ArcVillain: Zofis is the main villain of the Ancient Mamodo arc, which concludes with his defeat.
* ArchEnemy: To Sherry and Brago. Sherry absolutely despises Zofis for manipulating Koko and refuses to allow anyone else to take him out. And, despite his attempt to kill Sherry when they first met, Zofis actively avoids a confrontation with them, because Brago absolutely terrifies him.
* BadBoss: All of his minions, and even Koko, are just tools for him to become king.
* BigEater: All Mamodo have big appetite, but in Zofis' case, he prefers huge feasts fit for a king, which mirrors his personality and ambitions. Also, unlike other Mamodo such as Zatch or Brago, Zofis doesn't scarf down his meals [[JabbaTableManners like an animal]]. Quite the opposite, as shown in ep.69.
* CombatPragmatist: At one point he announces his arrival by blasting another demon's book before they even knew he was there.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: He points out to Sherry that she ''can't'' kill him, because then he couldn't erase Koko's memories, meaning she has no choice but to send him back to the Mamodo world. Brago points out that once he gets back, there's nothing stopping Brago from coming after him.
* DirtyCoward: Hides behind his army of Thousand-Year-Old mamodo, who he keeps in line with the empty threat of returning to stone. When Brago finally confronts him, he spends most of the battle running away, and when he's finally taken down, he's a teary mess.
* EffeminateVoice: His makeup and dress already make him effeminate enough, but the fact that he's voiced by women in all languages make it really impossible to tell he's male without looking into his pronouns.
* EvilSorcerer: Unlike most Mamodo, Zofis has powers that go far beyond his book spells. He can manipulate minds and hearts through hypnosis, extract memories with remarkable precision, and fly unaided.
* {{Expy}}: His look, personality, and even his attacks are very reminiscent of Freeza from ''Franchise/DragonBall'', and in the dub's case he even sounds like Freeza's old dub voice [[note]] by vitue of Susan Silo doing her [[WesternAnimation/XiaolinShowdown Wuya]] voice [[/note]].
* FailedASpotCheck: Subverted. Zofis, despite his strong perceptive abilities, somehow completely missed that Brago had intercepted the spell Zofis had shot at Sherry when they first met. Brago flat-out refuses to believe this and comes to the conclusion the Zofis had indeed noticed him and fled out of fear. Zofis' TearsOfFear are all the confirmation he needs.
* FangsAreEvil: He has a mouth full of fangs that he shows off when he's making the point of how evil he is.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He usually speaks in a calm, polite tone, even when trying to kill the heroes.
* FemmeFatalons: He's an utterly evil SissyVillain with long, red nails.
* HavingABlast: His powers are centered around [[StuffBlowingUp explosions]].
* HellishPupils: His eyes turn yellow/red with slitted pupils when he's being particularly evil.
* HypnotizeTheCaptive: Because Koko refused to be Zofis' partner, he used his power to corrupt her mind and heart so she would enjoy doing evil with him. Sherry is determined to defeat Zofis and free Koko from his control.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: There are hints that he felt inferior back in the mamodo world, but as the BigBad, he styles himself like the king he intends to be.
* KnightOfCerebus: The series takes a notably darker turn during his arc, and he's one of the first villains to have absolutely nothing funny about him.
* ManipulativeBastard: Literally; he has the power to manipulate the hearts and mind of humans and Mamodos alike. Even when he has to use mundane methods like against Sherry, he displays a thorough understanding of how to mentally break people.
* SissyVillain: His face, lipstick, colored fingernails, dress, and even his voice (to an extent) are all extremely effeminate, which somehow makes him even creepier.
* SmugSnake: He actually is incredibly powerful and can do things such as fly, teleport, and mentally dominate others without the use of his book. But when faced with someone he knows is his equal or superior, he isn't as smug.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: His ultimate goal is to become king of the Mamodo world and rule with an iron fist. [[spoiler:He fails.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: He starts losing his composure when Brago and Sherry enter the conflict. Them singlehandedly defeating his army, Brago's spell actually hitting him, and Sherry becoming immune to his manipulations all push him farther into breaking down. By the time Brago threatens to hunt him down in the demon world, he's reduced to a sobbing wreck.

An 18-year-old French woman who grew up in poverty. Kind and outgoing, she intended to seize her future with her own hands by attending a university. Shortly after she was accepted, Zofis came into her life and, after she refused to help him, brainwashed her into a cold and malicious individual.
----
* AffablyEvil: She rarely loses her cute, smiling demeanor even when she's being evil.
* BloodbathVillainOrigin: After Zofis corrupted her, Koko's first act of evil was to burn her entire hometown and everyone in it to the ground.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Zofis used his mind controlling powers to brainwash Koko and transform her into a sadistic person who enjoys doing evil with him.
* ChildhoodFriends: She has been Sherry's OnlyFriend since childhood.
* CuddleBug: A villainous example: Koko sure likes to hug Zofis from behind. But the fact that she's brainwashed the whole time makes it all look very creepy and squicky.
* DamselInDistress: She was kidnapped and brainwashed by Zofis. Sherry's main goal for joining the Mamodo Battle is to rescue Koko from Zofis' control.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Because they were poor, her family was forced to steal in order to gain the little food and comfort they had, and Koko herself was labeled as a thief because of it, even though she was innocent. Realizing that she would never be worthy in their eyes, Koko chose not to give in to despair and focus all of her energy into her work and studying for school. Unfortunately, Zofis forced her to become his partner and corrupted her mind to make her as sadistic as he is.
* InterclassFriendship: With Sherry. Koko is a poor girl and Sherry is a rich girl, but they have been best friends ever since they can remember.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Zofis removes all memories of her actions while evil. He refuses to do so until Brago tells him that if he doesn't, he will personally make Zofis's life in the demon world a living hell.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Sherry. Koko was Sherry's OnlyFriend and sole emotional support for most of her life. When her mother's cruel abuse pushed her to the point of suicide, Koko was the one who saved Sherry and motivated her to live on.
* MindControlEyes: Under Zofis' influence, her eyes are blank and inexpressive, a sign that she really is brainwashed and not simply acting on her repressed desires like Zofis claims.
* MoralityPet: Sherry's friendship with Koko and devotion to freeing her from Zofis are the first indications of her softer side before she starts [[DefrostingIceQueen defrosting]].
* MoreThanMindControl: Zofis attempts to convince Sherry it's this. [[spoiler: It ''almost'' works. Zofis also attempts to invoke this: unlike other people whose minds Zofis simply controlled, Zofis created [[SplitPersonality an entirely different personality]] out of the dark feelings in Koko's heart so that she would be his bookkeeper. 599* PutOnABus: Despite her being Sherry's initial reason for fighting, she totally disappears after Zofis is sent back. Justified, in that she goes off to college and Sherry wouldn't want to remind her of the battle anyway.
* RebuiltPedestal: [[spoiler:Koko, under Zofis' control, tries to break Sherry's spirit by revealing that she actually hates Sherry and is a truly evil person all on her own. In the end, this really is all a trick of Zofis's, and Koko really is the good friend Sherry remembered her being.]]
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: [[spoiler:Her earrings are styled after some rings she made for Sherry that were supposed to serve as talismans to ward off evil. When Sherry realizes this, that's her proof that the real Koko under Zofis' brainwashing is calling for help.]]

A male 6-year-old humanoid Mamodo and a warped doppelganger of Gash's, even having lightning spells of his own, he was responsible for stealing Zatch's memories. He is later revealed to be one of the four prodigies with the moniker 'Thunder Emperor'.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the manga, Zeon does start out rather dickish but as the battle goes on we start to see he does have a noble side and that his actions were purely driven by jealously [[spoiler: which he eventually overcomes once he sees Zatch's past]]. In the anime, no such development exists, he's evil through and through and has nothing but contempt for Zatch to the bitter end, even when he's beaten. This was because the author had broken his hand as he was in the midst of the story arc and the anime rapidly caught up before he could do the battle between Zatch and Zeno. So the animation staff just had to go with anything and just ran with what they had.
* AllEncompassingMantle: Zeno's clothes are theoretically exactly the same as Zatch's (albeit a different color), but his always seems to be billowing ominously while Zatch's generally just hangs down loosely like a dress.
* ArchEnemy: To Zatch. He's responsible for Zatch's amnesia and his burning hatred of Zatch is his motivation for most of the tournament.
* BigBad: For the last half of the Faudo arc, and for most of the series seeing as he's the one who removed Zatch's memories.
* BloodKnight: Zeno is very ruthless and it was something he inherited from his father. [[spoiler: This reason is exactly why King Bell gave Bao to Zatch. Bao consumed so much darkness, the spell became dangerous and Zeno, possessing his father's wrath, would've been consumed by it. Contrast this to Zatch, who not only manage to resist it, but ''purify'' Bao.]]
* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Zatch's Abel, though they get better.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: His spell selection is similar to Gash's, meaning his feats of extreme strength and speed come from pure physical training.
* TheDreaded: He's feared as "Thunder Emperor Zeno" due to the TrainingFromHell that puts him at a far higher level than most mamodo children [[spoiler: and being the son of the current king.]] Riou, who is no slouch himself, is trembling when they come face-to-face.
* ElementalWeapon: Unique to Zeno is the spell Sorudo Zakeruga, a giant blade made of lightning.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Even at his worst, Zeno genuinely cares about Dufort. The feeling is mutual, as Zeno is probably the only living thing that Dufort cares about at all.
%%* EvilTwin: He's an evil, white-haired version of Zatch. [[spoiler:Turns out he's Zatch's actual twin brother.]]
* FlashStep: Spams this, often to get behind opponents.
* FreudianExcuse: His grudge against Zatch? [[spoiler:He believed that, since Zatch got the incredible power of Bao, and he himself had to go through TrainingFromHell, that his parents favored Zatch. His HeelRealization hits when he realizes Zatch's bad past yet never wavered from his kind self while also learning Zatch was given Bao to protect Zeno from it.]]
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Part of what drives him. [[spoiler: He feels driven to surpass Zatch's Bao Zakeruga with his own power, born from his TrainingFromHell. If he can do so, he'll prove to himself that the suffering of said training was actually worth something. He actually is stronger than Zatch during their fight, but he loses because Zatch matches his and Dufort's suffering and the power coming from it with the care from his friends, empowering Bao.]]
* TheHeavy: His actions kickstart the plot, and he's the driving force behind the second major arc of the series.
%%* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: His last act in the human world.]]
* IgnoredEpiphany: He sees [[spoiler: fragments of Zatch's memories, revealing bits of Zatch's past along with the horrific might of Bao.]] He seemingly shrugs it off [[spoiler: though he eventually realizes he was in the wrong. Furthermore, he confessed that if he did win, he would've destroyed Zatch's book to prevent Bao from consuming him.]]
* KickTheDog: Beating Rops was all part of the competition, but he rubs it in by having Dufort Zeker the already burning book, destroying it instantly so Rops doesn't have the chance to give his bookkeeper a farewell.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:Starts undergoing one when he catches a glimpse of Zatch's memories and seeing the corrupted form of Bao. Finally hits it when defeated and sees Zatch's unpleasant past. Sums it up as such: "Forgive me, Zatch. Your brother has been a fool."]]
* PetTheDog: Seeing [[spoiler: Rodeaux]] being willing to risk his life to attack him, Zeon tanks the hit rather than dodge it.
* ThePowerOfHate: His suffering along with the hate from Dufort resulted in his ultimate spell. [[spoiler: He and Dufort were released from it when Bao ate the spell.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Just like Zatch, although he's far more competent with it.
* SlasherSmile: He's very prone to making crazy grins.
* SmugSuper: Fond of using only the bare minimum of force to counter his enemies' spells. This still comes off as him showing off though, since he's beating them with spells that ought to be much weaker than theirs.
* TykeBomb: Trained from when he was ''three'' to be a candidate for king.
* WhenHeSmiles: [[spoiler: During the last clash between his ultimate spell and Bao Zakeruga, he witnesses Dufort shedding tears from Zatch taking in his hatred and suffering... and cracks the first genuine, warm smile in the series from his debut up to that point.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: His white hair is infamous among the other children, along with his ruthlessness and malevolence.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: Of Baou Zakeruga. Not until he sees [[spoiler: Zatch and Kiyo nearly devoured by its power]], he doesn't.

* AskAStupidQuestion: Given his Answer Talker power, asking him how he knows something causes him to respond with derision.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: His Answer Talker ability; anything he can observe, he can answer any question about as fast as blinking.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: He considers the lives of human beings to have no more importance than the lives of flies. Since no one cares if a fly dies, he figures it doesn't matter if people die. He admits that most people would probably disagree with his assessment. He ends up [[spoiler: moving past this, first as a favor to Zeno and later the experience in his travels being shown gratitude moves him.]]
* DeathActivatedSuperpower: Implied. He states that the Answer Talker comes from dying then coming back to life.
* DeathSeeker: He's enough of one that Zeno's parting words to him are a demand that he live on and not just throw his life away because living is too troublesome. Dufort later gives his reason for living being him keeping a promise to friend, indicating this wasn't an unnecessary gesture either.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler: Dufort was raised in a lab environment from childhood, treated cruelly and anyone kind to him was removed. 655* HumanizingTears: [[spoiler: When Zatch through Bao takes in his hatred and suffering, crying for him, it ends up making him tear up at the first real sign of compassion. After curing a child in an African village and being showered in gratitude, the display of positive emotion and care moves him deeply, causing him to cry again.]]
* MentorArchetype: [[spoiler:During the Clear Note arc, he helps the remaining MainCharacters bring out their greatest potential via his use of the Answer Talker. He also trains Kiyomaro to stabilize his own Answer Talker ability so that he can use it on demand.]]
* MisanthropeSupreme: Implied during his fight with Apollo, and later confirmed when he and Kiyo finally meet. Kiyo attempts to appeal to him to stop Faudo, but Dufort shrugs it off, rather bluntly saying that he sees no value whatsoever in human life.
* NervesOfSteel: He jumps off a pillar at least three stories tall without flinching, confident Zeno will catch him.
* NoSocialSkills: He's very bad at even carrying on a conversation. Justified, seeing as the only human interaction he's had was through a computer screen.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: With Kiyo Takamine, in the Anime when he mind scans the former commenting about his years of jealousy-fueled neglect received both from his peers and his teachers in life, comparing it to his own harsh lab rat days in the asylum he'd been incarcerated in.
* NotSoStoic: He was angered so much when Apollo asked how much hatred he was hiding to the point where he attempted to finish him and Rops off with Zeno's ultimate spell, until Zeno convinced him otherwise. He is also [[spoiler: moved to tears when he sees Zatch taking in his suffering to free him from it.]] He ends up [[spoiler: in tears again when the family who's child he cures shows him gratitude. The emotional experience moves him deeply and being shown genuine care makes him weep once more.]]
* ThePowerOfHate: His Answer Talker ability was honed through pure hatred. It's implied his immense amount of heart power comes from this hatred as well. [[spoiler:He loses this thanks to Zatch and Bao.]]
* PsychicPowers: In the anime, Dufort had vast psychic powers for which he was poked and prodded within an undisclosed facility for most of his life.
* ShadowArchetype: Dufort is exactly the kind of person that Kiyo would have become had it not been for Zatch. Dufort's nihilism and misanthropy is a darker reflection of Kiyo's BystanderSyndrome and hatred of others before his character development. Dufort's hatred-fueled Answer Talker ability is also a mirror to Kiyo's [[AwesomeByAnalysis genius level intellect]]. And Zeno's influence on him is the polar opposite of Zatch's influence on Kiyo. The anime is a lot more direct about this.
* SkewedPriorities. He cures a child's fatal disease because the boy's family's wailing was keeping him from getting any sleep.
* TheStoic: He's rarely seen with so much as a twitch.
%%* StrawNihilist: Given his past, it's no surprise. [[spoiler: CharacterDevelopment frees him from this.]]
* SuperIntelligence: Dufort possesses a psychic ability known as "Answer Talker", which allows the user to immediately know the answer to any question. This lets him instantly calculate the best winning strategy for any situation.
* VillainousFriendship: He and Zeno are as close, if not closer, than Zatch and Kiyo. Dufort goes so far as to call Zeno his brother in one of the only genuine displays of warmth he ever shows.
* WalkingTheEarth: [[spoiler: After Zeno's gone, he decides to wander and look for a new purpose.]]

* EvilIsPetty: He sets Faudo to attack Japan, even knowing he has barely enough time to do so before Faudo is sent back to the demon world, just to spite Kiyo.

He boasts the ability of Annihilation, which allows him to completely nullify all spells and creates pockets of NegativeSpaceWedgie where he chooses.
----
* AdaptedOut: He and Vino don't appear in the anime.
* AntiMagic: The ''Supurifo'' spell family has the ability to completely negate a spell's effect within a given area.
* ArcVillain: He's the villain of the last arc.
* BadPowersBadPeople: An OmnicidalManiac with the power of annhiliation. [[spoiler:It's eventually revealed his desire to destroy comes from having those powers. When ''Shin Clear Seunousu's'' core is destroyed, Clear is reborn without any of his villainous traits.]]
* {{BFG}}: The ''Zarefedōra'' spell creates a gigantic artillery cannon which ''doubles as a projectile''.
* BishonenLine: Played straight with first, then averted with his OneWingedAngel form.
* BloodKnight: He likes to fight, expressing satisfaction when Zatch manages to challenge him and lamenting that his rivalry with Ashuron is ending. [[spoiler:That he doesn't feel this way during the second battle against him is the first sign that his personality is almost fully overwritten by Shin Kuria.]]
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: At the final battle, everyone acknowledges that Vino appears to be under Clear's control. Whether he was always like that is unclear, but it's worth noting that he goes back to being a regular baby once Clear is defeated. Brago also notes that Clear himself may be subject to this, his personality slowly being warped and destroyed by his own spell, the Shin Kuria.
* CombatPragmatist: He's not above using his enemies as human shields and though he admits it's a little lame he's fully willing to simply dodge Ashuron's final all or nothing attack.
* CreepyChild: All Mamodo are children, but Clear Note looks the most human of them all. That's not even getting to the effect he has on Vino, which makes him one, too, as he has a dull dead-eyed look.
* DemBones: The ''Bādorerugo'' spell conjures a giant, white, winged doll, which looks like a dragon skeleton.
* DiabolusExNihilo: Clear gets not a single mention prior to the arc where he's front and center, and promptly shows up to wreak havoc, establishing himself as the strongest demon in the series yet and the final antagonist, with the ultimate goal of erasing all demons from existence - himself included. None of the other demons seem to know anything about him, and no mention is made of his past or reason for being outside of that he is "the power to destroy". Little is said about Vino either, the talking human infant that is his bookmaster.
* EvilutionaryBiologist: He claims his existence and intentions to be the natural result of Mamodo evolution.
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: He's an extremist nihilist whose goals are the destruction of the human and Mamodo worlds and then suicide. He's also [[DiabolusExNihilo never so much as mentioned prior to his arc]].
* InvincibleVillain: His first appearance; he hands Brago his first and only [[spoiler:non-friendly]] defeat, destroys the full-power Baou Zakeruga, and nobody but Ashuron is able to lay so much as a finger on him (Brago pitched in at one critical moment, but only because Vino was out of energy). Interestingly enough, the fights with his various powered-up forms are much more even thanks to the heroes also getting much stronger.
* KillingIntent: His murderous intent manifests as a malevolent, demonic aura. It is so potent, he was able to scare both Brago and Sherry.
* LackOfEmpathy: Using Answer Talker, Dufaux in the Gash Cafe identifies Clear as someone who was born without the concept of love, utterly incapable of understanding it now or in the future. Clear only grasps through secondhand knowledge that the reason people don't destroy things is because they love them - Clear himself feels zero qualms about eradicating all demons because he can't comprehend shared positive emotions with anyone else besides himself.
* LightIsNotGood: Pure white, and pure evil.
* NoSell: The ''Supurifo'' spell family, as mentioned above. Unlike other defensive spells, they don't stop attacks as much as they directly cancel their effects or make them disappear.
* MeaningfulName: The name "Clear Note" can refer to his spellbook being a clear note(book), reflecting his complete lack of humanity and empathy, as well as the clarity of his intent, which is free of emotional attachment. "Clear" can also refer to "nuclear" as in nuclear weapons, which he compares himself to. His most powerful spell appropriately has his name in it, being called Shin Kuria(Clear) Seunousu.
* {{Nonanswer}}: After being asked why he's going to kill all the Mamodo, he replies that he wants to kill all the Mamodo. Though he elaborates more, his reason still boil down to him thinking his purpose in life is to kill.
* NonstandardCharacterDesign: Though the Mamodo in general have highly varied designs, Clear sticks out for his highly humanoid appearance - being virtually indistinguishable from a human teenager, and dressing the part too. This only serves to emphasize his nature as an eerie, unsettling force, even amongst demons.
* NoodleIncident: How did Clear get a baby as a bookkeeper is anyone's guess. We don't know what happened to Vino's parents either.
%%* OmnicidalManiac: To its [[DeathSeeker logical extreme.]]
* OneWingedAngel: Ends up with two such forms, each giving him an ungodly amount of power.
* OutsideContextProblem: A supremely powerful demon of unknown origin who shows up near the very end of the series, with the stated goal of not just winning the Mamodo battle, but eradicating the entire Demon World. For whatever reason, not even Zeno or any of the Bells were aware of his existence until he actually made himself known.
* ParentalAbandonment: States in the Gash Cafe that he never knew his parents, though [[MultipleChoicePast whether he killed them or whether they simply left him, he's not sure.]]
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He compares himself to a nuke.
* PhysicalGod: His final form ends up this way.
* PoweredByAForsakenChild: [[spoiler:We never find out anything about Vino, the baby who wields Clear Note's spellbook]].
%%* PowerOfTheVoid: The ''Radisu'' spell family.
* PureIsNotGood: It's implied that the reason he's so powerful is that his bookkeeper is a baby and can thus supply completely "pure" heart energy.
* RecursiveAmmo: ''Bādorerugo'' can shoot its hands which separate into smaller parts. Every tiny part contains the Annihilation effect of the ''Radisu'' spell family.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Baou's ability to erase evil appears to mean this for him. [[spoiler:When Clear got ripped apart by Baou, it stripped him of his old memories and personality, and even his appearance, bringing him back as a ditzy young child named White.]]
* TheRival: He considers Ashuron this. [[spoiler:To the extent that even after being controlled by Shin Kuria, he still recognizes one of Ashuron's spells, to the dragon's surprise.]]
* SensorCharacter: His ability to sense other demons is unsurpassed as his range goes up to 5,000 km.
* ShadowArchetype: He is considered one to Zatch. Both of their strongest spells are revealed to have sentience. The main difference is that Zatch was able to overcome the corruption of Baou and even pacify it. Clear Note fell pray to his own power and is being used as a puppet by his most powerful spell. He is basically the kind of person Zatch could’ve become if he were consumed by Baou.
* SoLastSeason: Does this to his predecessors as BigBad by virtue of his methods: he ''kills'' his opponents. As nasty as they were, even Zeno and Zofis were simply content to send them back, but not Clear.
* TheSociopath: The ''Gash Cafe'' special implies that Clear is simply incapable of feeling ordinary emotions, and can only derive pleasure from destroying things.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: An aversion. Clear is implied to have gotten stronger between his bouts with Ashuron and explicitly takes the time while recovering from Ashuron's attack to further empower himself.
%%* WhiteHairBlackHeart
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: [[spoiler:His current looks, goal and power level comes from him being controlled by his own spell, ''Shin Clear Seunousu'']].
* TheWorfEffect: Delivers Brago the only one of these he ever gets. Brago, after training, returns the favor to his first OneWingedAngel form.

Clear Note's human partner, a baby with unthinkable amounts of heart power.
----
* BrainyBaby: Vino seems to be pretty smart for baby, considering that babies normally can't read or talk in complete sentences like older kids. It's hard to tell if this is because of Clear's influence or what, though it's implied he's this because of Clear.
* GooGooGodlike: Vino has a large amount of heart power. We can guess this is probably why Clear chose him to be his bookkeeper.

A male 8-year-old humanoid Mamodo and the first (second in the anime) enemy that Zatch faced in the battle. His cool, quiet, and laid-back to the point of fault demeanor hides a malicious core that thrives on abuse and wickedness to become stronger.
----
* BlueMeansCold: He has blue hair and his outfit consists of a dark blue shirt with white patches that give the blue a cross design on the front and back and a large silver snowflake in the center of the shirt. His spells allow him to shoot ice out of his mouth.
* EvilCounterpart: His relationship with Hosokawa is a negative contrast to Zatch and Kiyo's early relationship with each other. Kiyo tends to think of Zatch as an annoyance, but still tries to look out for him. Hosokawa thinks Reycom's the best thing that ever happened to him, but still treats him like dirt. And while Zatch is working to make Kiyo a better person, Reycom encourages Hosokawa's descent into villainy to make himself more powerful. On a related note, Reycom's book is blue to Zatch's red.
* AnIcePerson: Reycom's basic spell, Gikor, shoots massive icicles out of his mouth. His second spell, Freezudo, freezes things in ice.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Almost literally. Reycom's book is burned because Hosokawa sought out Zatch to steal his book and use him as well, something Reycom knows is impossible but apparently never mentioned.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: He only appears for a few chapters in the manga, around two episodes in the anime, and is never seen again after his book is burned (except for a cameo in one of the last chapters). However, his actions establish a great deal of the Mamodo Battle and how it works. Kiyo and Zatch had no idea there were more kids like Zatch until confronted by Reycom and Hosokawa in the manga, and it's through fighting them that they learn spellbooks only work for one person, and the Mamodo disappears when their book is burned. The fight also marks the first use of the second spell, Rashield, and when Zatch realizes that the magic is coming from him, as before he thought it was Kiyo's tricks and strategies.
* StarterVillain: He only knows two spells, freely admits he and Hosokawa are only using each other, doesn't work with him at all and is unrelated to any future characters or story arcs. Reycom and Hosokawa are the only team to attack Zatch for reasons ''other'' than to burn his book and become king. But they are the first team Zatch and Kiyo defeat on their path to make Zatch king -- even if, at this point, they don't know it yet.

----
* AdaptationDeviation: In the manga, Hosokawa learns about Zatch when he and Kiyo foil some bank robbers. In the anime adaptation, he ''is'' the bank robber.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Hosokawa has ''no idea'' what Mamodo are, or of the contest to become king. He didn't even know there were other kids like Reycom until he reads about Zatch in the newspaper -- or when he and Kiyo thwart his bank robbery in the anime -- and then tries to take Zatch and his spellbook, not knowing [[OnlyTheChosenMayWield only the chosen partner can use it.]] This despite the fact that he's been working with Reycom for a while now, who ought to know all this. Apparently, [[YouDidntAsk Reycom just never bothered to tell him anything.]]
* PunchAWall: He does this after getting fired from his job.
* UngratefulBastard: Hosokawa was a poor delivery man who hated his job before meeting Reycom, and used the demon to better himself and take revenge on people he didn't like. Despite that, he sees Reycom as nothing but a tool. When Kiyo furiously points out that Hosokawa is wearing a nice suit while Reycom looks like he just crawled out of a dumpster, Hosokawa just laughs.

A male 8-year-old humanoid Mamodo child. Not evil, but ambitious to claim the throne of king and with few regards for the consequences of his actions. He appeared in the anime as the first antagonist that Zatch faced, clashing a couple of times but neither winning or losing.
----
* BlowYouAway: Hyde's spells are wind-based. Jikir is a strong gust of wind, and Jikirga is a concentrated wind blast.
* CanonImmigrant: He and Eido started off as anime-only filler characters with barely two appearances, but apparently were memorable enough that the author ended up including Hyde as one of the Mamodo who helps Zatch in the FinalBattle, thereby confirming that he and presumably Eido were part of the battle to become king.
* FillerVillain: What he started off as, which was probably a big reason why he and Eido were never seen again shortly after their second appearance. Makoto Raiku would later stealthily include Hyde [[CanonImmigrant in the manga]], albeit only as a cameo in the last few chapters.
* MinorMajorCharacter: He's the first villain in the anime and forms one of the few teams which Zatch and Kiyo could not defeat, and also gets an interesting bit of CharacterDevelopment with Eido in their second and last episode, all of which appeared to set the two as important {{Foil}}s to the protagonists in the future. However, after a mere cameo in one of Megumi's concerts, they never appear again in the series.

* CoolBoard: Eido likes riding his skateboard while using Hyde's wind spells to fly, though Hyde says it just makes him look like a poser.

----
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Given Gofure starts trembling and whining when Renji arrived and stopped after a spell was cast, it's likely he also had a forced personality change like Kolulu. The ''Gash Cafe'' special contradicts this, suggesting that Gofure has a somewhat sadistic personality even when not transformed.

[[caption-width-right:350:Maruss (left) and Rembrant (right)]]
A male 10-year-old Mamodo who was a close friend of Tia's back in the Mamodo world but quickly turned against her during their first encounter in the human world. Knowing that she hadn't yet found her human partner and was completely defenseless he attacked her and tried to elimate her from the battle to become king right then and there. Luckily, Tia survived his betrayal and soon partnered up with her friend Megumi and later Kiyo and and Zatch to finish the fight against him once and for all. After an intense battle with the two newly allied teams he got his book burnt with one final Zaker attack that sent him back to the Mamodo world for good. His partner was a middle aged man in a white suit named Rembrant.
----
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: He turns on Tia because, as the contest can only have one winner, every other Mamodo is his enemy. Though only one Mamodo can win, cooperation is vital to gaining an edge and every major player in the battle, even the strongest Mamodo, has at least one or two allies. In fact, the structure of the contest pairing every Mamodo with a human partner suggests that the eventual king being able to team up and collaberate with others was part of the point of the battle.
* ExtraOreDinary: His spells allowed him to summon powerful metal weapons like spiked metal balls or even a giant drill.
* FalseFriend: Tia considered him to be one of her closest friends while the two were still in the Mamodo world. It isn't long before he shows his true colors though, with a nearly successful attack that leaves her wounded and with severe trust issues. Shocked and deeply hurt by his betrayal, she takes a while to fully recover from the physical and emotional pain he inflicted on her.
* {{Foil}}: He is one to Gash in relation to Tia. While in the Mamodo world he pretended to be nice and friendly to Tia, but he discarded all of that once he contest began and targeted Tia specifically because he thought she would be an easy target. Meanwhile, despite Gash knowing nothing of Tia from before he lost his memories, he immediatly jumps to protect Tia and defend Megumi's concert. Likewhise, despite his amnesia, Tia observes Gash is still the same person in practice, defending others despite the danger, in contrast to how much Maruss changed when arriving in the human world.
* KickTheDog: He announces that after defeating Tia, he'll attack and ruin Megumi's concert purely to spite Tia.
* TheSocialDarwinist: A firm believer in this, which is why he betrayed Tia. It's also why he's angry when Zatch is able to beat him, since it basically deconstructs his whole philosophy.
* SoreLoser: Maruss is FURIOUS when Zatch is able to surpass him.
* ThisIsADrill: His ace spell Gigano Garanzu summons a massive spinning drill to attack the opponent with.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Maruss likes fish, korokke, and tulips.
* UnskilledButStrong: His spells tend to lack subtlety and utility but make up for it with sheer raw power.

A male 6 year old Mamodo and his partner who lure Zatch and Kiyo to a giant inductrial freezer by kidnapping Suzy and holding her hostage. It turns out to have been all a clever trap to force Kiyo and Zatch to fight them at a severe disadvantage due to the cold and allow Robnos to make full use of his laser beam and duplication abilities. After temporarily disabling one of the Robnos twins with a Jikerdor spell the two then fuse into their ultimate form for the final stretch of the battle. Seemingly outmatched and outginned against such a powerful opponet a bit of quick thinking from Kiyo saves the day and Robnos is sent packing back to the Mamodo world. As for Suzy... she was never captured by the duo to begin with, just out sick.
----
* CoolHelmet: It's actually a huge factor in his defeat. Kiyo was able to correctly guess that his attacks required him to build up power in his helmet before firing and used a metal pole to turn him into a giant lightning rod.
* EyeBeams: Robnos' most basic spell is a simple laser beam fired from his eye. Unfortunately, the location of the battle allows him to reflect it off of multiple surfaces to hit his target, making for a surprisingly dangerous basic attack.
* FusionDance: There are actually two seperate Robnos at the beginning of the battle that combine their attacks to hit Kiyo and Zatch whenever they try to dodge one of their laser beams. After the second one is captured by Jikerdor, Ruku uses a spell that lets them combine into a single more powerful entity.
* NoSell: Subverted. He pretends this happened with Zatch's Zaker spell, but Kiyo realizes that wouldn't have prevented his clothes from being burnt and figures out that he switched himself with another, unburnt copy.
* ThirdEye: His fused form has three eyes which allows him to fire three laser attacks at once.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Robnos prefers fish, menma and piroshki.

A 5-year-old Mamodo that used his power to take over a castle in England and demand tribute from the local townspeople, keeping any would-be heroes at bay with their fearsome army of "Immortal Knights" and several hostages, which included both Kory's parents and Kiyo's father. After their battle with Zatch and Kiyo starts going south, he and his partner decide to make a quick escape and flee while the castle crumbles to the ground around them. Luck isn't on their side however, as Zeno was waiting to prevent them from making a clean getaway and burns their book with a single spell.
----
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: Baltro initially appeared to be some sort of towering mecha but was ultimately revealed to be a tiny dog/badger creature with his robot form just being an advanced suit of armor that he could pilot from the inside.
* FramingTheGuiltyParty: Zeno hired him and Steng to kidnap Kiyo's father and scattered evidence around his office to pit Kiyo and Zatch against Baltro and Steng.
* GreenThumb: His spells allowed him to summon and attach special flowers to objects which could then be manipulated by Baltro remotely. This is how he created his army of knights and gigantic armor form.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: After seeing that his true tiny form is about half the size of Zatch, Kiyo decides to mock him for being so puny and weak and immediately starts getting his ass kicked by a ''very'' angry Baltro.

A 7-year-old lizard Mamodo, originally teamed up with Papipurio and Lupa before their lack of teamwork caused them to go their separate ways. Zoboron is a silent female Mamodo that resembles an iguana and with her partner Hige, they fought against the protagonists at the amusment park and actually had them on the ropes for a bit with their combo attacks before a fight between them ends their partnership. At the end of the battle their spellbook gets burned and Zoboron gets sent back to the Mamodo world, leaving Hige to desperately try to rejoin with Papipurio & Lupa as they make their escape.
----
* KillerRabbit: Zoboron looks like an ordinary harmless iguana and can fire out massive energy blasts that wouldn't be out of place in a series like DBZ.
* UnskilledButStrong: A variation; Zoboron's spells are extremely powerful, but just as easy to dodge. Not helping matters is that Hige is remarkably stupid, and therefore incapable of mitigating this handicap with strategy.

* DirtyCoward: He uses Papipurio as a HumanShield to absorb attacks, which infuriates his partner Lupa.
* {{Jerkass}}: Even with his more antagonistic traits overlooked, Hige is a selfish, childish, rude and whiny jerk who wouldn't even let his Mamodo join him on his ride at the park and drags it around on a leash like a pet.
* PsychopathicManchild: Hige behaves like a giant selfish kid and is just as dangerous as any other villainous opponent the heroes have faced.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Despite hailing the strength of their combination, Hige is barely able to be civil with Papipurio and Lupa and their poor relationship is contrasted with the genuine friendship of Zatch, Kiyo, Megumi, and Tia.

Cowardly and something of a spoiled brat, but with a good heart beneath it all. His spells are more disruptive than destructive, but not to be underestimated.
----
* AffablyEvil: Despite how much he and Lupa antagonized Gash and the others in their past battles and involving themselves in resurrecting Faudo, they were never really evil in the first place, [[HeelFaceTurn and they eventually lose their selfish attitude after being saved by Kanchome.]]

* FriendlessBackground: Papipurio making friends with [[spoiler:Kanchome]] has him remark it's the first time he's had a friend.
* HeelFaceTurn: He and Lupa were never really evil, but they eventually lose their selfish attitude after being saved by Kanchome.

* {{Gonk}}: Lupa is acknowledged as being "ugly" and sometimes her head comically grows in size to make her seem more weird.

A female 7-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch’s friends. She has an obsessive one-sided crush on Zatch, and misplaced anger led her to serve Zofis in the battle. Very vain, but not without conscience. Her spells are Water-based.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the illustrations on the covers of the manga, her hair is a pinkish white color, but in the anime, it is turquoise. Also, her crown hair accessories are blue in the manga, while they're yellow in the anime.
* AnimalMotifs: Her twintails are styled to resemble rabbit ears and her dress has a white ball attached to the back of the waist, mimicking a rabbit's tail.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She's extremely cute and sweet at first glance, but beneath that face, she's ''extremely'' selfish, vain, and ultimately just unpleasant.
* CuteAndPsycho: At first, she comes off as sweet and nice, if vain. Once she learns Zatch doesn't remember her, however, she turns into a rabid lunatic.
* DistaffCounterpart: To Zatch. When she cuts off her hair in the Millennial Demon Arc, she looks almost exactly like him. Many of their spells mirror each other as well, most notably "So Giaku" and "Baou Zakeruga."
* ElementalBarrier: She can create a shield made from water that can also absorb electrical attacks.
* ElementalEyeColors: She's a blue-eyed water user.
* ElementalHairColors: The anime gives her blueish hair to match her water element.
* EntitledToHaveYou: She's absolutely convinced that Zatch owes her reciprocating her feelings because she has been obsessed with him since the first time she saw him. In her mind, Zatch accepting fish from her is undeniable proof that he's her boyfriend. She finds it extremely insulting that Zatch forgot about her, even though he has amnesia and she never made that much of an impression on him regardless of that.
* EvilIsPetty: She joins in with Zofis simply because Zatch doesn't remember her in the Demon World despite the fact he lost his memory, finding it unforgivable that he forgot about her regardless of the reason. Kiyo tried to explain this to her, but due to some [[PoorCommunicationKills bad communication from Zatch]], it just makes Penny think she's being taken advantage of.
* GirlishPigtails: She's a very immature brat with her hair styled in two pigtails pointed upwards.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: Her panties have an image of Zatch's face.
* HeelFaceTurn: In the Ancient Mamodo Arc. [[ArmorPiercingQuestion After Zatch demands to know if Penny is aware of how awful she's treated the other Ancient Mamodos and their brainwashed human partners, along with all the other terrible things she's done]], Penny tries to redeem herself by helping defeat Demolt and destroy the Moonlight Stone with Byonko and Alvin. It's also the first time Uri actively helps her instead of just following orders, as she's doing something noble for once, even giving Penny orders instead of the other way around, to which she agrees.
* HeroicSacrifice: Catches Demolt's attention so he would attack her instead of Ururu. [[spoiler:Zatch and Ponygon keep her from dying, although her book is still burned.]]
* ImportantHaircut: She cuts her pigtails off to use in distracting Demolt, cementing her HeelFaceTurn. The grand finale shows she keeps the shorter hairstyle.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She only cares about what she wants and throws a fit when things don't go her way. During a flashback of their early adventures together, Penny made Uri sound like an UngratefulBastard when he was trying to warn her about how selfish her actions were, even outright stating that he was starving for food ''and'' work before Penny met him, and is now able to eat three meals a day because of her. It isn't until the battle with Demolt that Uri finally gets through to Penny about how her selfishness won't be enough to either defeat Demolt or destroy the Moonlight Stone, leading Penny to realize that she also needs to follow orders from Uri in order to work together and accomplish their goal.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: She always wears a blue PimpedOutDress, even when she goes into battle.
* LittleMissBadass: In their first battle, the small Penny was actually kicking Zatch's butt for a good portion of the fight.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She was smitten with Zatch while watching him wrangle a fish from her private beach.
* MakingASplash: All her spells revolve around the power of Water, which she can use to absorb Gash's Lightning powers and send it right back at him, proving her powers to easily counter his. Of course, after her HeelFaceTurn, she and Gash's powers combine to fight against Demolt in order to help destroy the Moonlight Stone.
* NightmareFace: She puts on a pretty nasty face whenever something or someone sets her off.
* NotGoodWithRejection: Anytime Zatch doesn't recall her or rejects her feelings is all she needs to go off the deep end.
* PetTheDog: Though she was ''totally'' selfish and committed illegal acts in order to do so, her helping provide for Ururu's family ''was'' pretty nice of her.
* PrincessPhase: She dresses like a fairy tale princess and dreams of marrying a prince [[spoiler:which is why she's so obsessed with Zatch.]]
* PuppyLove: She's a 7-year-old kid with a big crush on Zatch, who is only a year younger than her.
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: Inside her head, she's Zatch's girlfriend, but in reality, she was just a [[StalkerWithACrush stalker]] and had no real interaction with him besides her giving him a fish as a present. Whether or not he had amnesia, asking him to remember her would have probably been pointless.
* ShapingYourAttacks: Her strongest spell creates a huge dragon of water to attack her foe.
* SpoiledBrat: It's implied that her parents are rich, since she has her own private beach in the Mamodo World, which would help explain why she ended so self-centered and self-entitled.
* StalkerWithACrush: No matter how much she sugarcoats it to make it seem like she was Zatch's girlfriend, it is pretty obvious in flashbacks that she was just an obsessed stalker who deluded herself into thinking Zatch liked her because he accepted a fish from her.
* SweetTooth: She loves sweets in particular.
* ThirdPersonPerson: In the original Japanese, she refers to herself in the third person, calling herself "Patie-sama".
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: Her dynamic with Uri is basically her bossing him around and having him fulfill her every whim because she knows he can't say no to the one who is keep him afloat.
* TookALevelInKindness: She starts as an absolutely selfish, entitled, and petty brat, but becomes nicer after her HeelFaceTurn.
* TrueBlueFemininity: She's a very feminine girl who always wears a blue dress.
%%* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Byonko.
* WaterIsWomanly: A young girl who likes pretty things, has obsessive romantic feelings for Zatch, and wears a blue dress. She uses water spells, one of which forms a huge dragon made of water.
* WomanScorned: She feels scorned by Zatch because he forgot about her, even though that's Zeno's fault, and makes it her main goal to make him pay for hurting her feelings, even joining Zofis' side to get back at him.
* {{Yandere}}: She has an obsessive crush on Zatch and goes ''livid'' when he admits he can't remember her (because of his amnesia), swearing to burn his book for forgetting his "true love".

Still, there being two targets instead of one diffuses Baou's power enough that they both survive. Played straight after his HeelFaceTurn.

A male humanoid Mamodo adolescent and one of the Usurpers among the Faudo Cultists. A proud and strong demon who desired nothing more than being the strongest, he has a well-hidden heart of gold beneath the surface. His will is indomitable, and he gives allegiance to nobody but is not above allying with others. His bat-like wings are the medium and focus for his powers.
----
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: [[spoiler: Lets his book be burned rather than be torn apart by the Faudo cells inside him.]]
* CurbStompBattle: When Kiyo woke up, he stood no chance against Zatch's new powers. After a barrage of attacks from Kiyo, he lies on the floor while they turn their attention to Zeno.
* DoNotGoGentle: [[spoiler:As his own body is destroyed from within, Rodeaux continues his attacks on Zeno not letting his increasing wounds slow him down. This situation also serves as a RousingSpeech for his partner Cheeta who became emotionless from losing an eye.]]
* DoomedMoralVictor: [[spoiler: He can't resist Zeno and even attempting to causes his body to tear itself apart, with Rodeaux clearly defining his victory as him asserting his independence from Zeno's control rather than actually inflicting damage.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He offers to let Zatch and Kiyo flee from his fight with Rein and is disappointed when they refuse. He happens to love gunning down people who abandon their comrades to save themselves.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:He smiled as he was sent back to the demon world on his terms fighting for what he wanted and not as a pawn.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rodeaux was an antagonist towards Zatch and his group, but he formed a bond with his partner that any other heroic demon character had, although subtle.
* LastVillainStand: [[spoiler: He takes a final opportunity to attack Zeno while Dufaux's heart power is being restored, despite his own body being destroyed from within by Faudo's cells.]]
* MadeOfIron: Rodeaux is shown to be very resistant to spells at many points, as he survived when he was attacked by Kiyo's constant Zaker attacks after he was defeated in Faudo's brain room.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler: The speech that Rodeaux gives to Chita before his book is burned, telling her to find her own willpower.]]
* RazorWings: Rodeaux's spells consist of making his wings into attacks. His most powerful spells create large black blades from his wings to attack.
* TheStarscream: His intent to usurp Faudo's power, but naturally nothing comes of it due to [[spoiler: Leo and Zeon]] severely outclassing him.
* VillainousValour: [[spoiler:His last stand against Zeno has his body being ripped apart by Faudo's cells, but he continues his assault fighting for himself.]]
* WingedHumanoid: Rodeaux has demonic-looking wings.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: [[spoiler:Rodeaux's last words to Cheeta, despite trying to make it sound like a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech. He tells Chita that he's hated her for being so depressed and letting one injury change her life, and leaves her with encouragement.]]

----
* BlemishedBeauty: She still looks cute despite having half of her face disfigured.
* BrokenBird: After losing her eye in an argument with her abusive boyfriend, who left her afterwards, Chita grew to be emotionless and distant from others. [[spoiler:Until Rodeaux tells her to stand up for her true feelings before he vanishes.]]
* EyeScream: She lost her right eye as part of her backstory.
* MaskingTheDeformity: Chita lost her right eye and wears a mask to cover half of her face because of it.
* TheStoic: She remains stoic and composed for the most part, reading situations and rationing her Heart Energy appropriately.

A male Mamodo child and the only demon among the Faudo cultists that was loyal to Riou. He has several eyes, which grant him magically enhanced sight, and is clad in dark clothing that covers everything below his eyes. Cool, calculating, and vindictive to those who wrong him, yet despite his enhanced sight, he experienced tunnel vision when it came to his goals. His power over shadows makes him a formidable foe.
----
* AlasPoorVillain: As his book burns, he laments that he wasn't friends with Leo and that after all their hard work, the grand vision they once had was stolen from them with ease by Zeno. His last act is to apologize to his partner for being a handful.
* AntiVillain: Despite what he says, he's really only in it to help Leo.
* DeathGlare: Gives one to Fango. An omake panel reveals he was absolutely ''seething'' despite his apparent composure.
* DoomedMoralVictor: He rejects Faudo's power, seeing accepting it as a betrayal to Leo, and his fight with Aleshie is so close he probably would have won with it.
* EnigmaticMinion: His motives remain a mystery, even to himself.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: He has eyes on all sides of his head and on his palms. They emit the light he needs for his shadows.
* HumanShield: He uses Fango as a shield to survive Aleshie's ultimate attack.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Implied. In defeat, he laments his loss to him and Fango lacking teamwork and even asks himself why he felt misery at seeing Leo be defeated.
* LivingShadow: His power includes shadow manipulation and creating things made of shadow.
* SinisterSchnoz: Raushin, especially in the manga, where it's *long* too.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He and Fango are all but attacking each other despite being on the same side.
* TragicVillain: After Leo is defeated, all he had left was a pointless grudge against Alishie. Alishie recognized how empty he was and pitied him.
* UnfriendlyFire: Fango clips him with one of his spells, badly burning Zaruchim's arm.
* VillainousBSOD: Aleshie sent him into one when they first met. After looking into his eyes Zaruchim was left frozen and trembling. Avenging that humiliation is a major motivator for him.
* VillainousFriendship: Leo's defeat pretty much kills his drive. He later laments that he wasn't even friends with Leo, but it's unclear if he's in denial or sad that their businesslike relationship wasn't more personal.
* WorthyOpponent: His treatment of Riya and Aleshie, especially Aleshie, is an odd case. The gist of it is that he considers them to be this trope, but can't bring himself to admit it, and therefore wants to crush and humiliate them to prove he's the better fighter.

[[caption-width-right:350:Keith (front) with Berun (behind)]]
Keith is a male 17-year-old Mamodo child and one of the Usurpers among the Faudo cultists. A quirky but undeniably powerful demon who saw himself as equal to the four prodigies until Bari defeated him soundly. He saw Bari as a rival from that time on, and unlike him, he never was able to grasp the true meaning of strength. His spells focus around lasers.
----
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Keith is nuts, changing moods, hobbies, and whims on a moment's notice. His huge cigar and big gloves make him look like a Looney Tunes character.
* {{Foil}}: Keith to Bari. They're both powerful combatants with polar opposite personalities, Keith being boisterous and silly and Bari being stoic and serious. This goes as far as the appearances of their spells: Bari's manifest as spirals while Keith's manifest as straight arrows. Most notably, while Bari matures past his BloodKnight tendencies, Keith loses himself to his desire for more power.
* IHaveToGoIronMyDog: At the end of his first match with the heroes, they are incapable of fighting back but Keith himself is out of spells and badly injured. So he bails out of the fight without either admitting defeat or pressing his luck by claiming he's going to go get a snack.
* {{Jerkass}}: Keith outshines even the most overtly evil demons, simply because he's a ''massive'' asshole.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: When they meet again, Bari sees himself before his CharacterDevelopment in Keith and gives him a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech related to his inability to overcome his flaws the way Bari himself has.
* TheRival: Keith to Bari. When they meet again, Bari has outgrown the rivalry and finds the reminder of who he used to be annoying.
* SmokingIsCool: Keith has a preference for cigars.
%%* TheStarscream: Until he takes on Faudo's powers, despite his claims to the contrary.
* TookALevelInBadass: Keith gets three powerups from Faudo in his fight with Bari. They make no difference.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Initially, Keith seems immune to the personality alteration of Faudo's power beyond it killing his drive to usurp Zeno. After his defeat however, he activates a death trap and admits that he probably wouldn't have done so without Faudo's influence.

[[caption-width-right:253: Gorm (right) and Mir (left)]]
A male beetle-like Mamodo child implied to be stunted mentally, and grew up with no friends; due to this, he allied himself with Clear Note in the battle, offering his abilities in exchange for being the only one he would spare. The power of his black hole spells coupled with his almost global demon sense make him nearly unstoppable.
:
His partner is a young woman implied to have been part of an Russian mafia. She is somewhat conceited and rather snotty and sadistic but cares dearly for her partner.
----
* AdaptedOut: Doesn't appear in the anime as the story there ends with Zeno as the final opponent.
* TheAloner: Gorm was alone in the demon world, with no friends or family. His partnership with Clear is based on a lack of attachment with any of the other demons, with Clear being willing to allow him to live so long as Gorm is the only one left. Once [[spoiler:Kanchome befriends him, he decides to oppose Clear.]]
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: [[spoiler:The reason behind his HeelFaceTurn.]]
* BigCreepyCrawlies: Gorm's appearance is similar to a beetle.
* DarkAndTroubledPast:
** Mir is implied to have been a former moll for the Russian mob. It explains her behavior regarding her sadism and unpleasantness along with her fear in defying Clear Note, as seen with the scars on her backs.
** Gorm's willingness to allow Clear to kill everyone else is alluded to be because he lived alone at the bottom of a deep hole and so had no friends or family.
* DiabolusExMachina: Gorm's ability to teleport makes him this trope on two legs. He's able to catch Earth at his weakest and elminate him from the tournament. And Clear only survives his battle with Ashuron due to Gorm being able to teleport him away before Zatch and Brago can take advantage of the opening.
* LastOfHisKind: This is his plan, to win the battle alongside Clear and [[spoiler:let Clear kill all the other Mamodo with the King's Privilege and then kill himself, leaving Gorm the only Mamodo left.]]
* PowerOfTheVoid: His spell theme. Works slightly different from Clear's and looks drastically different. Seems to work more like a spatial anomaly rather than annhilation.
* ThinkingUpPortals: He has the ability to create wormholes that can be used to warp anywhere in the world or even to alternate planes of reality. And critically, it's simply an ability he naturally has, he doesn't need his spellbook partner to cast anything.
* TheUnintelligible: Gorm, albeit Mir (and arguably Kanchome) can understand what he is saying.
* VillainTeleportation: His shtick is creating wormholes to travel through. This is extremely dangerous, as it lets him and Clear attack from out of nowhere and instantly retreat to safety whenever they want. And uniquely, he doesn't even need his spellbook to do it, it's simply something he can do at will.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler: When he rebels, Clear slices him in half, fully intending to kill him. Zatch is able to send him back before he dies]].

* CombatPragmatist: Pamoon had the upper hand in their fight, but Goren pretended to have taken a hostage to distract him.
* TheDreaded: He was considered the most dangerous mamodo of his generation for his power and his ruthlessness. He exploited this to keep anyone from trying to stop him. [[spoiler: It failed as four teams, lead by Dauwan Bell and Willy, stopped his reign of terror.]]
* OneManArmy: He personally defeated at least 40 Mamodo, nearly half the contestants in his battle to be king.

Her spells focus around the crescent moon on the end of the wand she carries, which can fire energy beams, grow gigantic, and even multiply.
----
* HornedHumanoid: Laila has small horns on her head.
* LittleMissBadass: A tiny little girl, and still one of the most powerful demons we see.
* LittleMissSnarker: Once the stone of moonlight is destroyed, Laila starts smack-talking Demolt like there's no tomorrow.
* {{Lunacy}}: Laila's spell theme is geared towards crescent moons.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She's shown to be a serious character quite unlike the protagonists. After she properly joins them, the next chapter features her comically forgetting the castle's traps and triggering the kind of hijinks common to the series.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: She's small, but still able to throw ''Demolt'' around.
* TheStoic: Laila's facial expression rarely changes, except to occasionally give a rather charming smile.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Despite technically being over 1000 years old, Laila's still just a 7-year-old mentally. Still, she's incredibly intelligent and nearly unflappable.

* BreakoutCharacter: He appears for only a short time, but remains one of the most popular characters of the series.
* ChargedAttack: His ''Chaaguru Imisudon'' spell fires a gigantic V-shaped laser after using the ''Chaaguru'' charging spell five times in a row. It can also be fired before all charges are completed, at the cost of its size and power.
* CombatPragmatist: Jumps the heroes expressly because he knows they are exhausted.

----
%%* TheBerserker: Described as one.
* BloodKnight: He laughs after being hit in the face by Ponygon and Zatch.
* TheBrute: Plays this role much better due to his lack of intelligence. [[spoiler: [[DumbAssNoMore until his master unintentionally activated the spell to boost his intelligence.]]]]
* CatchPhrase: Refers to a lot of things as "depressing."
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: His final spell. [[spoiler: Not for him, for his master since it makes Demolt intelligent enough to stop taking orders.]]
* DiscardAndDraw: His final spell greatly boosts his power but he doesn't use any other spells during its duration. Whether this is because he's incapable of doing so or because [[spoiler: him eating his master prevented any spell calling]] is unclear.
* DumbMuscle: He's supposed to be this. The fact that he's actually fighting strategically is what clues Laila in to the fact that his partner isn't controlled.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: In the Ancient battle, he was known as ‘The Crazed Warrior, Berserker’, a juggernaut that used brute force rather than tact to win his fights; Zofis used him as the guardian of the Stone of Moonlight.

A male adolescent Mamodo resembling a cross between a human and a beetle, more towards the former. He valued nothing more than strength and sought to fight strong opponents to relieve his constant anger; though he overpowered Zatch in the battle, the young king’s ferocious willpower made Bari unable to deal the finishing blow. He later found tranquility and learned the true meaning of strength by defeating the dragon prodigy Elzador. Neither a friend nor an enemy to Gash, defined as someone strong enough even to strike the king.

----
* BarehandedBladeBlock: Very casually to his own spell after it hit [[AttackReflector Rashirudo]]. And after being hit by it a few times, he simply ''punches'' Zakeruga out.
* BloodKnight: A mild deconstruction. Prior to his fight with Zatch, fighting was the one thing Bari liked, but without a purpose beyond that, he was growing more and more dissatisfied with his life. He began to gain purpose after fighting Zatch.
* BystanderSyndrome: He flat out refuses to participate in the fight against Zofis due to being more concerned with settling his rivalry with Zatch. By the time of the Faudo arc, he's matured out of it and is more than willing to help.
* CoveredInScars: After his battle with Elzador, Bari is littered with scars all over. He even lost one of his horns.
* DeathGlare: His 'strong eyes' that drive Keith up the wall
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Keith considers [[spoiler: his fight with Elzador]] to be this. Bari chides Keith for not having the guts to think it was possible.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: When he first meets Zatch, he's extremely frustrated because none of his fights satisfy him and he has no idea what he wants to do once he's won. Fighting Zatch actually gives him the drive he needs to find meaning in his life, and he decides not to burn Zatch's book out of gratitude.
* DeusExitMachina: Bari is by far one of the most powerful characters in the series; among other things, he deals Zatch his first unambiguous defeat, defeats a dragon Mamodo who is explicitly stated to be one of the favorites to win the entire competition, beats Keith senseless despite the latter undergoing ''three'' OneWingedAngel transformations, and is, in fact, the single character in the entire series to never lose a fight. It's even insinuated very strongly that he is capable of defeating [[BigBad Zeno]], [[CoDragons Rodeaux, and Jedun]] singlehandedly, [[spoiler: so of course, right before the heroes confront the trio, Bari acts selflessly for the first time in the series by sacrificing himself to get the party through one of Faudo's deathtraps, completing his CharacterDevelopment and paving the way for Zatch to take on Zeno himself]].
* {{Determinator}}: He proves himself to be one when facing an enemy far stronger than even himself.
* DumbMuscle: Gustav and Bari himself, with the benefit of hindsight, refer to him as being a "hoodlum" and the fight against Zatch was meant to give him a motivation other than just punching people out.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: In his first appearance, Bari doesn't really ''get'' that Zatch and Kiyo are trying to rescue the innocent bystanders because they care about saving lives, even accusing them of wanting the powerless humans to help them defeat him.
* FaceOfAThug: Even his neutral expression is intimidating. Hell, even his smiles are usually terrifying.
* {{Flight}}: When firing his spells from behind.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: To Zatch. He punches Zatch out when the latter is despairing over getting caught in Faudo's death trap. This is more of a milestone for Bari than Zatch, as Bari had been previously unable to strike Zatch due to being overawed by the look in his eyes.
* TheGift: As noted above, Bari is of no spectacular origin, nor did he receive any training from anyone prior to the start of the battle for king. He is a naturally powerful demon.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Takes Zatch's place in a death-trap because he respects the little guy too much to let him take the fall.]]
* IHatePastMe: Meeting up with Keith for the first time in a while seriously annoys Bari, because by the time they collide, Bari has matured immensely and Keith is a painful reminder of who he used to be.
* KnightOfCerebus: The first and one of the few mamodos to outright defeat Kiyo and Zatch, even taking their strongest spell while only suffering cosmetic damage. The only reason he doesn't burn their book is that their fight showed Bari a purpose for his life beyond mindless battles and he decides to have a rematch with them later. Likewise, their first real defeat subsequently leaves both Kiyo and Zatch in a [[HeroicBSOD slump]] for some time after.
* MadeOfIron: Bari was the first one to actually take Zatch's Bao Zakeruga spell and not get knocked out.
%%* ManlyTears: [[spoiler:During his HeroicSacrifice]]
* SlasherSmile: Pretty much the only kind he is capable of.
* SpectacularSpinning: His spells have a twister theme.
* StrongAndSkilled: Bari is the first enemy Zatch and Kiyo face who is both more powerful and more talented than them. They barely manage to eke out a draw because Zatch [[{{Determinator}} wanted it more.]]
* SuperReflexes: Dodged Zakeruga from point-blank range.
* SuperStrength: To such a degree that one strike from his hand does more damage than a spell from one of the stronger enemies in the Fudou arc.
* TearsOfFear: [[spoiler:When facing Elzador's overwhelming strength. But Bari [[{{Determinator}} overcame]] his fear to [[DefeatingTheUndefeatable emerge victorious]]]].
* TheUnfought: He never got his rematch with Gash, instead [[spoiler: pulling a HeroicSacrifice to save Gash and others trying to stop Fudou]].
* ThisIsADrill: Generally, his spells revolve around twisters, but a couple of his spells concentrate them into drills on his arms.
* TookALevelInBadass: He was already one of the toughest competitors in the tournament, but the second time we meet him, he's in a league only shared with the four strongest.
* TookALevelInKindness: After his CharacterDevelopment, Bari became much more kind to others.
* TrainingFromHell: Bari challenges a dragon as part of his training.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Bari hands Zatch and Kiyo their first outright defeat, only choosing not to burn their books on a whim. This hard lesson in how much stronger the remaining demon children are spurs Zatch and Kiyo to try to become much more powerful.
* TheWorfBarrage: The first Mamodo to shrug off a direct hit from Baou Zakeruga. It provokes an understandable OhCrap moment from Kiyo since, up until now Baou Zakeruga has proven able to one-shot any Mamodo they've come across and also drained Kiyo of all his heart energy, leaving them unable to cast any more spells.

* SoProudOfYou: When Bari is [[spoiler:performing his HeroicSacrfice,]] Gustav expresses his admiration for the man Bari has become.
* StealthMentor: Gustav pretty much manipulated the entirety of the fight between Bari and Gash to teach Bari that he needs to be motivated.
* YouCouldHaveUsedYourPowersForGood: Delivered to Bari at the end of his battle with Zatch, pointing out that for all of Bari's natural power, all he does with it is going around picking fights with any mamodos that he comes across rather than seeking a higher goal. It ultimately convinces Bari to spare Zatch and decide on a new goal of becoming the strongest king that has ever lived. 1545* ActualPacifist: Kolulu is pacifistic and doesn't want to fight. Unfortunately, her book's spells make her lose her mind and force her to fight anyway.
* AdaptationalBadass: ''Friends of Eternal Bonds'' has a playable version of her normal, non berserk form that tosses volleyballs on enemies and heals her teammates by cheering them on.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: Played mostly straight. Her powers are mainly on powerful offensive capabilities. [[spoiler: However, her strongest spell is meant to preserve life, giving Zatch and Kiyo an aura to survive in ''space.'' This implies her real ability is Protection.]]
* BarrierWarrior: She can place a protective aura around her or anyone she wishes that protects them from any attack.

* DisposableWoman: A non-lethal example. Kolulu is sent back to the Mamodo world at her own request because she doesn't want to be forced to fight. For the rest of the series, her situation is almost Zatch's entire motivation for wanting to be King.
* NiceGirl: Kolulu is a sweet girl and only wants to live peacefully with her human partner.
* PsychoPink: Kolulu's true self is a gentle, pacifistic girl. As such, to take part in the battle, she has a bloodthirsty SuperpoweredEvilSide with razor-sharp claws.
* ReluctantWarrior: She ''really'' doesn't want to take part in the Mamodo battle, so much so that she was given a SuperpoweredEvilSide that would force her to fight.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Kolulu has pink hair, and is very kind-hearted.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Kolulu lasts only a single chapter/episode, but meeting Kolulu gives Zatch and Kiyo a drive to win the Mamodo battles and gather like-minded competitors to ensure that the future Mamodo King is a kind ruler who will ensure that no one would have to be forced to fight against their will like she was.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Kolulu was saddled with a violent and vicious "battle mode" to make sure that she was willing to fight.
* TragicOneShotCharacter: Kolulu is a sweet Mamodo who was forcibly given a SuperpoweredEvilSide so she would fight in the Mamodo Battle. Her only episode ends with Kiyo forcing Zatch to burn her book at her own request, as she prefers returning to the Mamodo World over hurting others.

* WhenYouComingHomeDad: Her parents are so busy with their work that they barely communicate with her save for mere notes written on a whiteboard. 1637A male Mamodo whose standard form is a massive blue beast resembling a cross between a wolf and a bear. Formerly cruel with a bad reputation in his home village for rampaging, he changed his mindset after befriending Zatch when the latter saved his life and showed unflinching strength in the face of his threats, and now holds a very gentle side. He sought to help his partner Kyle overcome his timidity.
----
* BadassNormal: Effectively, since Kyle was too scared to cast spells Rein had to beat any challengers barehanded.
* GentleGiant: He looks pretty terrifying, but he's just as kind and gentle as Zatch.
* HeelFaceTurn: In his backstory. He was originally a violent, rampaging demon who was feared and hated. Once, he severely injured himself, and despite his threats, Zatch brought him back from the brink of death. Afterward, Rein reformed.
* MadeOfIron: Having to fight without spells, Rein has no real defense against other demon's spells besides enduring them.
* OptOut: Rein actually has no desire to become Demon King, and even if he did, his partner Kyle is horribly cowardly and even in the final 30 or so still has no will to actually do battle. So Rein sends Zatch a letter asking him to burn his book. His only reason for sticking around is to help Kyle gain a semblance of a backbone.
* TooPowerfulToLive: He's so incredibly powerful that he's sent back to the Mamodo world by the end of his first appearance so he doesn't trivialize much of the remaining conflict.

Ted is a male 10-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch’s friends. Sharp-dressed and cool, he tends to be laid-back if the situation isn’t dire, but also has a short temper and great pride in his strength. However, his first priority is his friends; he can endure anything for their sakes, especially his crush and only family, Cherish. His spells focus on augmenting his physical capabilities, each spell building on the last, like gears in an automobile.

* ChekhovsGunman: He first appears as a silhouette during an extra chapter depicting Professor Riddles's attempt to get help against Zofis's army.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: His weapon of choice. Unlike many other demons, Ted has no true attack spells. Instead, he gets his [[SuperMode gears.]]
* DeathOrGloryAttack: Ted's Final Gear gives him an ''extremely'' powerful punch, but the strain it puts on his body means that one punch is all he's got.
* DelinquentHair: Ted wears a slick, gelled pompadour, highly resembling a cross between hairstyles associated with JapaneseDelinquents and western GreaserDelinquents.
* IWillFindYou: He's looking for Cherish.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: JustifiedTrope: Ted has to activate his spells in sequence, so he can't jump to his strongest gear right away. How much time is needed to shift gears helpfully increases dramatic tension.
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: Said to have been killed by Waig in the beginning of the sequel, after being [[WorfHadTheFlu depowered]] by a giant dragon, to set up the new villains as a huge threat.
* SuperMode: Ted's gears. They can only be used in sequence, one at a time, and each raises his speed and strength to formidable heights.

----
* CoolOldGuy: He's a fun middle-aged man who travels the world on his motorcycle.
* NoSympathy: Jeed informs Ted that if he can't find food or a place to stay, he's on his own. Then again, Ted makes an offhand mention of a tab he has running from Jed, suggesting Jed doesn't just let him go hungry either.
* WalkingTheEarth: He travels around the world because he's a wanderer.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0arth_1.png]]

A male 17-year-old vaguely humanoid Mamodo knight, and one of Zatch's close friends and acquaintances. He wears armor, a sun-shaped helmet, and a large mantle, and also carries a powerful sword that saps the stamina from its victims with each strike. As a descendant of a line of peacekeepers, he dedicates himself to the greater good regardless of personal sacrifice.
----
* AntagonistAbilities: He has the ability to drain people's energy through his sword and somehow this skill seems less effective when he's fighting alongside the heroes than it was being used against them.
* {{BFS}}: His spells all make use of his sword. Some get quite large.
* DespairEventHorizon: Almost. [[spoiler: Upon realizing that Clear may well be the one who will become the king, Earth bursts into tears and begins screaming about how he doesn't want to die.]]
* IaijutsuPractitioner: The ''Jerudo Ma Sorudo'' spell is a powerful Iai attack that can be held back and released instantly when the enemy gets within range.
* KnightInShiningArmor: His appearance is a spot-on match and Earth comes from a clan that upholds the demon world's laws. While in the human world, he makes a point of investigating what he believes to be threats to either world, such as Baou and Faudo.
* KnightTemplar: He's so committed to protecting the world from Faudo and Baou that he's blind to the fact that Baou's wielder is entirely benevolent and no threat to him or anyone else. When he meets up with Zatch trying to stop Faudo from rampaging, Earth realizes his mistake and the two join forces.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Earth's "Gash Café" chapter involves him scolding Momon for stealing panties, [[AllMenArePerverts only to get wandering hands]] when the rabbit offers him one. He stops when he notices Elly glaring at him in disgust.
* SpottingTheThread: Earth claims to be going for a walk, but Elly notices he's bringing the book with him and concludes an enemy is nearby.
* StormOfBlades: In the manga, the [[spoiler:''Varusere Ozu Māru Sorudon'']] spell.
* WorfEffect: [[spoiler:He gets beaten by Goomu to showcase how dangerous he is and by extension how dangerous the much stronger Clear is.]]

A 7-year-old Finnish girl. She initially declined to be Earth's partner out of nihilism. She saw purpose in her life after saving Earth from Gani Fest, and stood alongside him from then on. At Earth’s request, their relationship became like that of master and servant with her as the master.
----
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Elly would rather die from Riou's curse than allow Faudo to be awakened since Faudo will destroy the world and kill her anyway.
* LittlestCancerPatient: She's diagnosed with a terminal illness.
* PluckyGirl: Elly is a sickly girl who still tries to fight.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:Elly was having a particularly bad attack of her disease at the time and they were out of medicine.]]

His willpower enables him to withstand powerful attacks and keep getting back up. His spells morph his body in various ways.
----
* BadassAdorable: Riya looks like a stuffed animal, but quickly proves to be one of the strongest mamodo around.
* BlushSticker: Riya has permanent blush marks in his cheeks.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Riya's Teletubby-esque appearance qualifies.

Riya's human partner. He's a young African man with an indomitable heart and spirit. He worked himself tirelessly to fight and provide for his family and village. He was one of the four victims that Riou cursed and forced into helping break Faudo's seal; Alishie fought through the curse and was instrumental in helping Zatch and his allies disable the threat Faudo posed.
----
* ArchEnemy: To Zaruchimu. Alishie hates him for securing his cooperation by threatening one of the children from his village. Meanwhile, Zaruchimu deeply resents Alishie for physically overpowering and humiliating him during their fight.
* BadassNormal: Aleshie can fight a demon in hand-to-hand combat with reasonable success.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Alishie has spent most of his life carrying the water that his family needs to survive across a five mile hike, entirely by himself. Thanks to that, he's tough enough to fight toe-to-toe with a demon, spells and all.
* DeathSeeker: Aleshie, though only briefly, so that his power could not be used to unseal Faudo.
* {{Determinator}}: Aleshie can keep fighting through a curse that ought to be keeping him at death's door. He says he's had worse.

A male Mamodo child resembling a dark-skinned bicorn with a long blue mane. Older and apparently more mature than Schneider, yet still incapable of speech, he is a proud fighter whose respect is not given freely. His spells also revolve around speed and armor, but he also particular skill with his ice magic.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Karudio has more spells and a better control over his powers than Ponygon does when they first meet. He and Sauza have also been together for longer, and thus have a more finely-tuned bond than Kafk and Ponygon. The latter narrowly avoid a defeat by running away, and never actually manage to defeat the former.
* EnemyMine: During the Faudo Arc he shows up just to have another shot at burning Ponygon's book. He joins forces with Zatch's group purely out of a desire to protect Elly, who reminds him of his little sister.
* HarmlessFreezing: Surprisingly, a subversion. Karudio's final spell produces such sheer cold that it's even dangerous for himself.
* HeroicSacrifice: He uses a spell that will freeze even himself to death to stop Faudo's heart demon. Sauza burns the book before he can expire.
* AnIcePerson: Karudio has ice powers, in contrast to Ponygon's fire.
* TheUnintelligible: Much like Ponygon, Karudio can only be understood by his partner and another horse tribe mamodo like Ponygon himself.

Karudio's human partner. He's a Mongolian boy who tamed Karudio with an effort and spent many months working to perfect their teamwork.
----
* BigBrotherInstinct: Sauza sees his little sister in Elly. However, they are unable to team up properly until he stops trying to protect her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's a stubborn, belligerent, and short-tempered boy with a protective instinct for girls younger than him, stemming from having a younger sister.
* NationalStereotypes: Sauza is Mongolian, and is portrayed with a near-supernatural ability to tame and understand horses.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: With Earth and Elly, at first. Initially Sauza's incessant need to protect Elly interferes with their teamwork, but her telling him off is sufficient to get them on the same page.

A female humanoid Mamodo adolescent, Ted's crush and motivation for standing up for the weak, and one of the Faudo Cultists. In the demon world, she served as a surrogate mother for demon children in poverty, shining like a jewel among the garbage heap; appropriately, her spells generate Crystals. Though she lacks experience in real fights, her willpower is all but indomitable.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: ''Gurādo Ma Kofaru'' spell summons a big gun that fires diamond bullets.
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the anime, she wears a red shirt and white boots, but both garments are blue in the manga.
* CoolBigSis: Ted and the other kids from the demon world regard her as a kind and protective sister figure.
* FearOfThunder: Zeon tortured her with his lightning, giving her extreme phobia of it.
* FriendToAllChildren: Cherish protected a group of orphan Mamodo children from the many dangers and bullies within the Mamodo world.
* GemstoneAssault: She specializes in crystal magic. Her spells are all about shooting crystals.
* LittleMissBadass: She's tough enough to rank pretty high in the Faudo cult's hierarchy. She even gives [[spoiler: Zeno]] pause for a while.
* MagicMirror: [[spoiler:Two of these were apparently summoned by the ''Gurādo Ma Kofaru'' spell in the manga. Cherish uses them for exit portals for the projectiles of the aforementioned spell. Basically allows her to fire from three different locations without moving]].
* RebuiltPedestal: [[spoiler:Seeing her with the Faudo cult seriously shakes Ted up, as does seeing her cower in fear of Zeno's lightning. However, this just drives him to rescue her even harder, and he helps her power through her fear.]]
* SmallGirlBigGun: The ''Gurādo Ma Kofaru'' spell gives her a sniper-like weapon that's longer than her body.
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: Said to have been killed by Waig in the beginning of the sequel, after being [[WorfHadTheFlu depowered]] by a giant dragon, to set up the new villains as a huge threat.

Cherish's human partner. She's a park ranger and expert sniper at a nature conservation. She was one of the four victims that Riou cursed and forced into helping break Faudo's seal.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her outfit is almost entirely green with a yellow scarf in the anime, but in the manga, it's mostly beige with blue sleeves, and a light blue scarf and hat.
* CompressedHair: To make herself look like a boy, she keeps her long hair under a hat.
* SamusIsAGirl: Ted actually believed that Nicole was a boy when he met her the first time, due to the clothes she was using. A deliberate ruse on Nicole's part since two women traveling together could be dangerous.
* SweetPollyOliver: She disguised herself as male to travel with Cherish

[[caption-width-right:250:Riin Vise (left) and Ashuron (right)]]
A male dragon Mamodo and one of the four prodigies (arguably the strongest), he resembles an adult in his growth. A proud but kind demon who dreamed of harmony among all the different kinds of demons, he was one of the last demons standing in the battle and befriended Zatch after testing his strength. One of the first demons to face Clear Note, he dedicated himself to stopping the evil demon’s plans.
----
* AdaptedOut: They don't appear in the Anime.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Ashuron loses his wings to one of Clear's spells, severs an arm to increase his speed for his final attack, and said attack rips off his legs and remaining arm.]]
* BerserkerTears: [[spoiler:Ashuron cries and screams in frustration when Clear survives Ashuron's TakingYouWithMe attack.]]
%%* GiantFlyer: Of the dragon variety.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: Ashuron almost stabs Clear Note in two using his horn and his ultimate spell]].
* MadeOfIron: Ashuron's legendary red dragon scales are virtually indestructible and one of the few things capable of tanking Clear Note's attacks, though Clear's stronger spells are capable of piercing them.
* MajorInjuryUnderReaction: [[spoiler:Ashuron barely blinks when Clear's spell disintigrates his wings and is in fact grinning because he saved Zatch and Kiyo from the spell. He also severs his crippled arm with nothing more than a remark that it'll make him lighter and faster.]]
* OhCrap: When, after blocking the spell Clear used to defeat him in their first encounter, Clear simply pulls out a stronger spell and shatters Ashuron's shield, he and Riin both have this reaction.
* PlayingWithFire: The fire breath you'd expect from a giant dragon.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Ashuron's battle with Zatch was merely a test to see if he has ill intentions for becoming king. Naturally, he passed.
* SuperSpeed: Ashuron's ultimate spell, ''Shin Feiuruku'', enables supersonic flight speed in a straight line.
* TakeUpMySword: Ashuron does this with Zatch. [[spoiler:Right before he sacrifices himself to bring down Clear, he outlines his vision of what the Mamodo King should be like and asks Zatch if he will become such a king.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:Ashuron uses his ultimate spell to defeat Clear knowing it would tear apart his body in the process.]]
* TooFastToStop: When using his ultimate spell, Ashuron has a bit of difficulty when it comes to maneuvering due to the injuries inflicted by Clear Note. Clear implies that even at his best, Ashuron can barely control the spell.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Ashuron writes Brago off immediately after he's attacked by Clear. Brago survives, though it was a close call, and Ashuron expresses he's impressed by his tenacity.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Like Rein before him, Ashuron can take human form, though it's still pretty freaky.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Ashuron is built up as the BigGood of the final arc. Sent back about a quarter of the way into it.
* YoungerThanHeLooks: The rules of the God's Trial mean Ashuron has to be a child, but his apparent maturity, the adult look of his human form, and his love of beer all suggest he's an adult or very close to it.

Kiyo's friend from school. She's ditzy and cheerful and has a huge crush on him. One of the first friends Kiyo has.
----
* BettyAndVeronica: Betty to Megumi's Veronica. She's Kiyo's ordinary schoolmate with a crush on him, making her quite the GirlNextDoor type when contrasted with the pop idol Megumi who is also interested in Kiyo.
* BookDumb: She freely admits that she has trouble with various academic subjects, particularly [[EverybodyHatesMathematics mathematics]].
* ButtMonkey: When bad things aren't happening to Kiyo, it's because they're happening to her instead.
* ClingyJealousGirl: The only times she gets really upset is when she thinks Kiyo will get taken by another woman.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: The planet she's on hasn't even been discovered yet. Among several weird stuff, she thinks Ponygon looks like a sheep instead of a pony.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Adorable, but can't go two steps without tripping over her own feet.
* TheDitz: She's a total scatterbrain.
* GenkiGirl: She's always full of energy and excitable.
* GirlNextDoor: She's Kiyo's ditzy friend with no relation to Mamodo whatsoever, serving as the only (mostly) normal person in his life.
* NiceGirl: She's a very sweet and positive girl.
* NoSenseOfDirection: She gets lost in a hospital ''50 times'' trying to find Kiyo's hospital room.
* PluckyComicRelief: Her ditziness is one of the main sources of humor in the slice of life scenes.
* PluckyGirl: She's as feisty and tenacious as she is ditzy.
* UnknownRival:
** She sees Megumi as a love rival for Kiyo's affection, but neither Kiyo or Megumi realize this.
** In a FillerArc, she gets jealous of Shion and considers her a rival for Kiyo.
* UnwittingMuggleFriend: She is unaware of the Mamodo Battle and what Zatch is. She does begin to get very nervous feelings every time Kiyo is out of town for longer periods of time related to the battle, but she isn't quite sure why.

A schoolgirl with a freaky perpetual smile who spends time at the local playground. Comically, she is Zatch's number one nemesis who bullies him throughout the story and is the only one that he can't defeat.
----
* TheBully: She lives to torment Zatch. And she's pretty good at it too, considering that he could pretty much turn her inside out if he really wanted to.
* GirlishPigtails: She's a little bratty girl with pigtails.
* {{Gonk}}: She has beady eyes and very ugly TombstoneTeeth.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She will taunt Zatch, torture Zatch, and make his life a living hell...but the one and only time he's actually in danger, she helps him without hesitation, with great risk to herself.
* InvincibleVillain: PlayedForLaughs, as the inhumanly powerful Zatch can never seem to beat Naomi or even stand up to her, with Makoto Raiku himself once claiming Zatch would never win even if he had Answer Talker. However, Zatch actually ''did'' defeat Naomi in a way at the very last omake of the series by [[spoiler:rejecting her declaration of love and driving her to tears]].
* {{Jerkass}}: She doesn't really have a reason to bully Zatch as brutally as she does; she just seems to be sadistic.
* LovingBully: It's heavily implied that Naomi constantly bullies Zatch as a way to show that she really likes him. [[spoiler: This is confirmed in the final omake.]]
* NoFullNameGiven: Her surname isn't mentioned.
* SitcomArchnemesis: Zatch views her as a mortal enemy of his that, despite his superpowers, keeps getting the better of him. Lampshaded when he asks Kiyo to train him to be stronger than Naomi, with Kiyo assuming she's a new Mamodo enemy.
* {{Tsundere}}: Implied to be her motivation for bullying Zatch, though her sweet side is only barely shown.

* AbusiveMom: She was so abrasive and disapproving of her daughter that Sherry once attempted to [[DrivenToSuicide kill herself]] because her mother told her that she shouldn't have been born just for not being perfect.
* EducationMama: She forced Sherry to take long, exhausting lessons of piano, math, and ballet, and scolded her for making even the smallest mistakes.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Unlike her daughter, she wore glasses and was an extremely abusive, heartless mother to her daughter.
* MyBelovedSmother: She was immensely overbearing and forced a load of work and practices upon a very young Sherry.
* ThePerfectionist: She wouldn't accept Sherry to be anything less than perfect. When Sherry failed to live up to her unrealistic expectations, she emotionally abused her to the point that Sherry almost killed herself once.
