[[folder: Mark Lilly]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mark_lilly.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MattOberg
The main character. A human social worker in New York City, employed by the Department of Integration.
----
* BeleagueredBureaucrat: He's a social worker who tries to do his job in an office run by demons that hates his profession and give him no budget.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Has some occasional flashes of a VERY dark side, mostly related to his obsession with eggs.
* ButtMonkey[=/=] TheChewToy: Basically, his role in the story is to be constantly belittled and absued (Physically or otherwise) by the almost all the other characters.
* CannotTellAJoke:
-->'''Mark:''' Twayne seems pretty horny. Maybe that's because he has horns on his head!
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He was much more apathetic in his relationship with Callie in earlier episodes, he even tried to break up with her a few times but that's difficult with a [[GoodIsBadAndBadIsGood demon,]] He also made it clear he never wanted kids. This was dropped later on, one episode even showed him to have a college fund for their future child.
* ChickMagnet: Downplayed. Kind of. We don't see Mark get as many girls as Randall or even Leonard, but the girls he does get are flat-out gorgeous (Lillith, Callie, Jacqueline). They also seem to form an obsession with him.
* CovertPervert: As nice a guy as he is, he did pick a succubus with a UsefulNotes/{{BDSM}} fetish to be his girlfriend.
* CulturedBadass: His craftiness, quick wit and knowledge of how to behave in social situations get him out of a lot of ugly situations.
* DeadpanSnarker: Despite his niceness, his sarcasm surfaces from time to time.
%%* DesignatedVictim
* EveryoneHasStandards: He might be nice, but not unconditionally. And often he makes very clear how far his niceness will go depending on the circumstances.
* FatalFlaw: A recurring problem with Mark is his lack of understanding of the various monsters of the world he lives in, whether that be trying to treat them like humans or straight ignorance:
** He temporarily killed Leonard by snapping his wand in half because he didn't know it was Leonard's life force.
** He let a batboy out of its cage in an attempt to treat it with respect, unaware it was closer to a rabid animal than a person. It bites him on the penis, infecting him with its venom, and Grimes swoops in to kill it, aware of what was gonna happen.
** Mark nearly killed a young manbird by trying a DieOrFly moment both because he thought it was ready and because he didn't want to try and teach him the manbird language, which consists of [[ClusterFBomb all swearing]]. The second part also means the manbird, Albert, will never properly communicate with his kind. Albert's singing even causes his father to disown him on his deathbed.
** He nearly kills Randall, who was turned into a plant/zombie hybrid, by acquiescing to his demands for human brains, under the impression it was what Randall needed. Leonard points out it was closer to a baby demanding candy and Randall is dying of neglect.
** His lack of knowledge of demons almost cost him his soul in one episode when he unwittingly agreed to a demonic ceremony with Callie.
* FetishizedAbuser: He behaved horribly toward his college girlfriend, Jacqueline. The psychological damage he inflicted on her not only lowered her self-esteem but drove her to throw her life away so she'd one day become perfect for him. The real kicker? He decided their relationship couldn't work because [[MinorFlawMajorBreakup she was allergic to his favorite food]], [[TrademarkFavoriteFood eggs]]. Yet, he is characterized as a smart NiceGuy and the OneSaneMan.
* GeekyTurnOn
-->'''Callie:''' Uno is like third base to him!
* GoodIsNotDumb: Some episodes show that he's a lot more on the ball than people think. Particularly the one where he's forced into selling his super-sized soul to Aldremach [[spoiler: and gets it back by spending an entire day debauching himself until his soul is the size of a pea. When Aldremach throws it out in disgust, he's able to get it back. His plan also included him short-selling futures in the soul market, which earned him about 10 grand]].
* GuileHero: Surprises you sometimes when he connives his way out of trouble.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Despite the challenges he faces, he never stops being optimistic, to the point where his soul was enormous from performing only good deeds for his whole life. Though he is capable of being morally grey too.
* LoserProtagonist: Mark is sometimes portrayed as this, in-show.
* NiceGuy: His status as this is a borderline plot point.
* PungeonMaster: Apparently, a recreational pastime of his.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: He is the sensitive foil to both Leonard and Randall.
* StraightManAndWiseGuy: The straight man to Randall's wise guy.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Eggs. His obsession with them gets creepy very easily.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: Most of the time with his girlfriends, the only exception being his girlfriend in college, who he coldly dumped while she was in the hospital because she was allergic to eggs. Eggs ''he'' forced her to eat.
* UnfazedEveryman: He's a normal social worker that works in a city filled with supernatural creatures. He often treats bizarre situations with surprising calm.
* UnluckyEverydude: As a social worker working in an office with no respect for his profession, his work is often ridiculously challenging.
* WideEyedIdealist: He's endlessly optimistic despite being TheChewToy.
* WeirdnessMagnet: Even in a fantastical New York, Mark tends to attract the most bizarre and convoluted of situations.
* ZombieAdvocate: His defining characteristic.

[[folder: Callie Maggotbone]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/callie_maggotbone.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/NatashaLeggero
Mark's direct superior and on-again-off-again girlfriend. A half-human succubus.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: To Twayne, although they don't go through with it.
* AttractiveBentGender: As Dick. Complete with rippling muscles, GagPenis, and the voice of H. Jon Benjamin.
* UsefulNotes/{{BDSM}}: Callie's a ''big'' fan of this.
* BreastExpansion: In the "Demon Baby" episode, Callie's breasts swell when she comes near the demon baby that Mark is caring for. Then they start to lactate fire.
-->'''Mark''': Um, did your boobs just grow when you touched the baby?\
'''Callie''': No.\
'''Mark''': Are you sure? 'Cause I could have sworn. There, it happened again.\
'''Callie''': Stop [[MyEyesAreUpHere staring at my boobs!]]\
'''Mark''': [[ImAManICantHelpIt I can't]], so I'll go.
* CharacterDevelopment: She [[TookALevelInKindness becomes somewhat nicer]] as the series progresses.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Despite asserting that she's in an open relationship with Mark, she gets incredibly distraught when Mark actually does find someone else to have sex with.
* ClothingDamage: Happens a lot, [[MsFanservice naturally]], such as when [[ShapeshiftingExcludesClothing she transforms]], or when she lactates fire.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Very often, but mostly out of self-centeredness rather than stupidity.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: The fact her father loathes Mark for being a NiceGuy human is something she considers a positive.
* DestructoNookie: Callie is very active in bed.
* DudeMagnet: Pretty much every single male in the DOI wants to sleep with her.
* FetishizedAbuser: She's pretty horrible to Mark most of the time, being half-demon and all. But sometimes she ''does'' open up to him and show him her human side. You really can't stress this enough, since the demons on the show are portrayed as virtually incapable of affection and love, even to their own families. The fact she clearly tries shows she really does care about him.
* FieryRedhead: She's a redhead demon with a passionate personality and fiery temper.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Has a human mother and a demon father.
* HotAsHell: A HeadTurningBeauty who's a seductive half-succubus.
* ImpossibleHourglassFigure: She has large breasts and hips with a thin waistline.
* MoralityPet: Mark is usually the one to instigate her nicer moments. Even in the Pilot, the only reason he didn't get fired along with the rest of his department is because she was looking out for him.
* MsFanservice: A very attractive demon girl with large, bouncy breasts, an [[ImpossibleHourglassFigure impressive hourglass figure]], wears a [[FormFittingWardrobe formfitting office outfit]] that highlights her voluptuous figure, and is [[SexGoddess really into sex]] and UsefulNotes/{{BDSM}}. No wonder why she is a massive DudeMagnet.
%%* PowerIsSexy
* ReallyGetsAround: Though she does get into a serious and monogamous relationship with Mark.
* SexGoddess: Appropriately for a half-human succubus, she's ridiculously good at sex. Though sometimes Mark's human body can't take her DestructoNookie and SexIsViolence tendencies.
-->'''Callie:''' ''[having just finished patching up the wounds she inflicted on him during sex]'' Mmm. Your flesh wounds are getting me hot. Ready to go again?\
'''Mark:''' It's been three times tonight!
* SuccubiAndIncubi: She's a [[HalfHumanHybrid half-succubus]]. In "Soulsucker" it's shown that she even has the ability to suck souls out through the urethra.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Justified, since she's part demon and she's really into UsefulNotes/{{BDSM}}.
* VillainProtagonist: She's the {{Deuteragonist}} of the series, and much more villainous than Mark.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She has a larger, "more demonic" form with wings and talons. She can apparently extend and retract the wings at will.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Randall Skeffington]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/randall_skeffington.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KurtMetzger
Mark's slovenly zombie roommate.
----
* BrainFood. A running gag of the series is that he often fantasizes about eating Mark brain.
%%* BromanticFoil: To Mark.
* BodyHorror: Being a living corpse, Randall's body is in a state of decay, and parts of him are often falling off or gets replaced. And then there's the time [[ItMakesSenseInContext he got turned into a giant flower]].
* CatchPhrase: Whenever something bad happens, Randall lets out a drawn-out [[OhCrap "craaaaaaap!!"]]
* ExtremeOmnisexual: Has had sex with many things, including Great Brain's fiancée, and a blob creature.
--> '''Mark''': [[LampshadeHanging It is literally anything that moves with you, isn't it?]]
* FriendlyZombie: Mark's zombie roommate, who while is irresponsible and snarky, is otherwise quite friendly. His HorrorHunger is PlayedForLaughs, coming across more like a recovering alcoholic struggling to maintain sobriety (even down to having a sponsor), and he can usually keep it in check by eating fake human flesh substitute.
* FriendsRentControl: He has no identifiable job, but still seems to pull through somewhat. Though there are implications that he gets money out of selling sex tapes of Mark and Callie.
* {{Jerkass}}: Though not without the very rare PetTheDog moments here and there.
* TheSlacker: He doesn't enjoy working, or doing any sort of task. Becoming a zombie only elevated this.
* TheSleepless. One episode revealed zombies do not sleep at all, so he spends entire nights eating ice cream.
* StraightManAndWiseGuy: The wise guy to Mark's straight man.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Leonard Powers]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonard_powers.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/RandyPearlstein
The wizard of social services, and Mark's co-worker at the DOI.
----
* TheAlcoholic: In many ways, he almost feels like some sort of SpiritualPredecessor of [[WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty Rick Sanchez]], minus the nihilism.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: While he looks human, wizards are considered a different species in the series.
* AndAllIGotWasThisLousyTShirt: After the [[MonstersAnonymous Department of Integration]] is shut down in the "Kong of Queens" episode, he goes on a bit of a bender. He ends up being worshipped a la [[Film/ApocalypseNow Colonel Kurtz]] and is later seen wearing a shirt saying "I was a demigod and all I got was this lousy t-shirt".
* BerserkButton: "Shark Week is a national treasure!"
* BrilliantButLazy: Often too lazy/drunk to do anything useful, but is actually quite knowledgeable and can accomplish a lot when properly motivated.
* BizarreAlienBiology: Despite looking human, wizards are apparently a separate species, as shown in the episode where its revealed that they lay an egg that will hatch into their successor.
* CatchPhrase: "Magic!"
* {{Dismotivation}}: Leonard is a fairly powerful wizard, knows a lot about the bizarre processes of New York, and can be downright helpful at times. He's just very, very lazy.
* {{Expy}}: He's basically a comedic version of [[Literature/HarryPotter Dumbledore]]. [[spoiler: His son from "Wet Hot Demonic Summer" is a blatant Harry Potter expy.]]
* JerkAss: Downplayed. While he is lazy and has a bad temper, there are many instances of the series where he genuinely tries to help Mark. But most of the time, he ends up making things worse for him.
* MageSpecies: Leonard might look human, but he is able to lay eggs and live thousand of years.
* MrExposition: Leonard is usually the one to explain the various fantasy elements in the series.
* MundaneUtility: His use of magic can fall under this sometimes, such as using his wand as a slideshow projector.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Leonard constantly tries to help Mark... But most of the time the help he provides usually ends up making things worse.
* SiblingRivalry: He's jealous of his much more successful brother.
* TrulySingleParent:"Wet Hot Demonic Summer" reveals that apparently, Wizards are able to reproduce by laying eggs without sexual intercourse.
* WizardBeard: He's got the classic long beard of a wizard.
* WizardsLiveLonger: Somewhere in his fourth century.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Twayne Boneraper]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twayne_boneraper.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MichaelLeonWooley
A demon; Mark, Callie, and Leonard's superior at the DOI.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: He's set up to an ArrangedMarriage to Callie, and while he's willing, she wants nothing to do with it.
* ArrangedMarriage: To Callie, although they don't go through with it though.
* BadBoss: He's incompetent and often a jerk to his employers.
* BlackAndNerdy: Twayne fits this to a T, given his voice and some of the stuff that happens to him (e.g. getting a nosebleed while traveling down to Hell due to the change in altitude). One of the few characters to pull this ''and'' ScaryBlackMan off simultaneously.
* CampStraight: He often displays all sorts of campy behavior, but he only has expressed sexual interest towards women.
* CannotTellAJoke:
-->'''Twayne:''' What's the difference between a demonic council and a room full of chickens with their heads cut off? The chickens have far superior mid- to upper-level management skills! HI-YO!
* CasanovaWannabe
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: As shown in "G.I. Twayne", if given proper motivation, Twayne has the capacity [[spoiler: to take over the world with the forces of Hell]].
* GentleGiant: Though visually very imposing, Twayne is a big creampuff at heart, and highly naive to boot.
* IdiotHoudini: Downplayed. Despite his idiocy, poor choices and incompetence, he tends to keep his position and privileges. However, there are some episodes where he goes through some suffering. Mostly of the physical kind.
* {{Jerkass}}: Out of the main cast, he's the one that has most of the KickTheDog moments, such as firing Mark's entire staff in the pilot. This has waned in later episodes.
* ManChild:
** When he goes to his family's house for Samhain, he wears goofy pajamas and reads comic books with a flashlight at night.
** He's also ''ecstatic'' over the prospect of going to Summer Camp, to the point of forgetting the reason for being there in favor of carving a ([[HiddenDepths rather ornate]]) totem pole.
** He also can't poop away from home [[spoiler: due to abandonment issues.]]
%%* MommasBoy
* PointyHairedBoss: And he's got [[IncrediblyLamePun TWO POINTS]].
* ScaryBlackMan: Ordinarily, demons on the show are portrayed as upper-class, [=WASPy=] types; Twayne is the only exception to date.
* SharpDressedMan: He's almost always wearing a business suit.
* VetinariJobSecurity: In one episode he quits and gives his job to Mark, by noon the city is in chaos and drifting out to sea so the government can nuke it. Once Twayne is convinced to come back he fixes everything in two minutes with a birthday cake.
* VillainProtagonist: The most evil out of all the main characters, as unlike Callie he barely has any PetTheDog moments.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Frank Grimes]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/francis_grimes.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/LarryMurphy
The chief of law enforcement, and a foul-tempered foil to Mark. Prejudiced toward non-humans, he'd rather see them all deported.
----
* AFatherToHisMen: Frank Grimes tries to be this, but given the HighTurnoverRate of said men, they're understandably skeptical.
* TheAtoner: He never quite got over having [[AccidentalMurder accidentally killed his partner]] in his rookie days. [[spoiler: Turns out he didn't really... and later in life he accidentally shot him ''again''.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: In less than a season, he went from being an angry, frothing-at-the-mouth racist, violent cop to a mildly short-tempered clown who seems to berate the non-humans because he feels he's expected to.
* DaChief: A stereotypical law enforcement boss with a big mustache, a large-than-life attitude and that cigar-chewing demeanor.
* GagPenis: Grimes' wang is big enough to be used as a bludgeon.
* {{Jerkass}}: He often behaves in rather unpleasant manner towards other characters, sometimes hitting them without reason.
%%* LikesOlderWomen
* MyBelovedSmother: Has a ''very'' rocky relationship with his mummy. [[spoiler: Who is literally a mummy]]
* NobleBigotWithABadge: He racist law enforcement enforcer against pretty ''anything'', be it supernatural creatures or actual people of different races.
* SociopathicHero: He ends saving the day in a couple of episodes, but he is also shown to be pretty sadistic and prone to pull some rather cruel pranks.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Aldremach Maggotbone]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aldermach_maggotbone.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/LarryMurphy
The highest-ranking demon in Hell and Callie's father.
----
%%* AffablyEvil
* BigBad: The closest that the series has to one, as the ruler of hell and Mark's father-in-law who wants his soul.
* TheBluebeard: He gets a new wife every year and usually even has his new wife bury the old one.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Owns "Maggotbone Soul Industries", and is willing to [[spoiler:steal Mark's soul for profit.]]
* LargeAndInCharge: He's much bigger than most characters in the show, even most demons, and is the de facto ruler of hell.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Seems to be standard for demons.
* ObnoxiousInLaws: Strongly dislikes Mark.
* {{Satan}}: Kind of. While he is referred to as "the Devil", this appears to be a title for the current head of Satan's line. It doesn't mean much either, as Hell is currently owned by a conglomerate of Japanese businessmen.
[[/folder]]
