[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amethyst_van_der_troll.png]]

The leader of the BFFL. She is a total sweetheart, and acts as the heart of the BFFL. She's generally kind and eager-to-please, but can be hard on herself in tough situations. Amethyst was the last of her friends to get her gem glow, and finds she's a natural spellcaster. Her boyfriend is the cute, clumsy Coal, and her Ancient is her grandma.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Her grandmother calls her "Ammy".
* AudienceSurrogate: For the first few episodes, the audience gets to know the setting from Amethyst's POV.
* BadassAdorable: All of the BFFL is this, but her sweet personality makes her stand out.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She's a sweetheart for sure, but she's just as strong as her friends when things get hairy.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Coal. They're both nice and friendly.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Makes her a great fit for Coal.
* CuteWitch: She's a sweet girl who's a natural spellcaster.

* TheHeart: She's the main emotional element keeping the BFFL together.
* NaiveNewcomer: She's the newest at casting spells in the group.
* NiceGirl: She's the nicest of the BFFL, sometimes to the point of being a pushover.
* PinkHeroine: She's the main heroine of the show and her theme color is pink.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Pink is her main color and she's the most traditionally feminine of the main girls.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Pink-haired, sweet, nice and friendly.

!! Ruby Trollman
->Voiced by: Creator/ChiaraZanni
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruby_trollman.png]]

Ruby Trollman is the second-in-command the BFFL. Coming from a rich family, she can be spoiled, self-centered, and abrasive, and has trouble asking for help or admitting when she makes mistakes. Ruby's also not the best spellcaster, but she has nerves of steel and never backs down from a challenge. Her boyfriend is the muscle-bound Rock, and her Ancient is Obsidian.
----
* BadassAdorable: She storms Simon's lair and saves her friends with Coal and Rock's help.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Rock. They bicker as much as they flirt, if not more so.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Averted in her case, as her red hair is dyed to match her eyes. Her real hair color is brown.
* CuteWitch: Not the best at spellcasting though…
* FamousAncestor: Accordng to Obsidian, Ruby's a direct descendant of King Trollemange the First. Her last name, "Trollman," is even a watered-down version of "Trollemange."
* FieryRedhead: Her hair is (dyed) red and she's quite determined and feisty, though abrasive at times.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: In the first episode, she kicks Amethyst out of the group because she feels like Amethyst is better than her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's rude to all her friends, but she's also the most determined to help them if they're in trouble. A later story arc emphasizes this when she realizes her friends are acting mean like she does at times, so she vows to clean up her act.
* TheLancer: She's supposed to be the second-in-command of the BFFL. Her more bossy and headstrong personality make her a direct foil to Amethyst.
* LovableAlphaBitch: She may have a mean popular girl attitude, but she's redeemed by the fact that she cares about her friends.
* RedIsHeroic: She has bright red hair and is one of the heroes. She's the one who rescues everyone in the last arc.
* SingleGirlSeeksMostPopularGuy: Heavily implied, considering her beau Rock is MVP of their school's football team.
* SpikyHair: Her hair sticks up in all directions like a five-pointed star.
* SpoiledBrat: She's well-off and not afraid to flaunt her wealth.
* UnskilledButStrong: She's not the best spellcaster but she's very strong.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sapphire]]
!!Sapphire Trollzawa
->Voiced by: Alexandra Carter
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sapphire_trollzawa.png]]

Sapphire Trollzawa is smart and ambitious, and takes studying and learning more seriously than her other friends. She can be shy at times, but Sapphire knows quite a lot about history, science, and much more, making her useful in dangerous situations. Her boyfriend is the nerdy Alabaster, and her Ancient is Mr. Trollheimer.
----
* AmicableExes: She dated Rock Trollhammer (Ruby's current boyfriend) sometime prior to the start of the series but broke up with him for unknown reasons--however, they're on good terms to the point of where Sapphire clearly has no problem with Rock dating Ruby.
* AsianAndNerdy: She's a smart girl of Japanese descent.
* AsLongAsItSoundsForeign: ''Trollzawa'' sounds like some Japanese name with the word "troll" added to it.
* BadassAdorable: She's a smart and kind of shy girl who uses her smarts to help her friends out of tough situations.
* BadassBookworm: She's defeated Simon many times and faced a volcano.
* BlueIsCalm: She wears blue as her theme color, and is the most demure and sensible member of the BFFL.
* BlueMeansSmartOne: Sapphire is TheSmartGirl of the BFFL. She takes school-related things the most seriously out of all five of them. She has blue hair and bright blue eyes, wears a blue sweater, and her gem is blue.
* CuteBookworm: She's a very smart and studious girl with a shy streak.
* TheDarkSide: Fell victim to this in episode 11.
* NavelWindow: The few times her gem is visible, her skirt is pushed down slightly to expose it between the lower sashes of her sweater.

* NerdyNasalness: She has a nasal voice.

->Voiced by: Anna Van Hooft
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/onyx_von_trollenberg.png]]

Onyx von Trollenberg is a not-so-scary goth. She has morbid interests and can be sarcastic at times, but she's a genuinely good friend who's willing to listen, even if she strikes off alone at times or has trouble asking others for help. Onyx is not good at driving, but is good at casting spells. Her boyfriend is the emo poet Flint, and her Ancient is Spinell.
----
* CannotTellALie: She's very honest.
* CuteWitch: Her morbidity and snark [[DownplayedTrope downplays]] the "cute" part at times, but she's great with spellcasting.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She's got dark purple hair and dark clothes but she's one of the heroes.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has the sharpest wit of the [=BFFL=]s.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: She's not good at driving her Skoot.

* {{Goth}}: Her cultural interests involve rock music and she wears dark clothes.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's a good friend and listener despite her sass and gothicness.
* TheVonTropeFamily: She is German, so it is natural that she has this kind of name.
* WeakButSkilled: She's not a fighter like Ruby is but she's good at casting spells.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Topaz]]
!! Topaz Trollhopper
->Voiced by: Leah Juel
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/topaz_trollhopper.png]]

Topaz Trollhopper is a fashionista, and isn't always aware of what's going on at times. Silly, sweet, and serious when she has to be, Topaz tends towards the quirky side of things, which can help her friends in a bind. Her boyfriend is the hip-hop cool guy Jasper, and her Ancient is Zirconia.
----
* AlliterativeName: Both her first name and her surname begin with "T".
* BadassAdorable: She's a sweet and quirky girl whose quirky ideas can actually help her friends out of sticky situations.

* SkewedPriorities: She freaks out when Simon ruins her favourite shoes while possessing her.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She's the blonde of the group and she's a nice, helpful girl.

[[folder:Obsidian]]
!! Obsidian
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/obsidian_trollz.png]]

The operator of the spell shop at the Trollzopolis Mall, Obsidian has a very wide array of knowledge. She and the other Ancients fought Simon 3,000 years ago. She is the Ancient counterpart to Ruby because of both always taking command.
----
* CoolOldLady: She listen and gives good advice to Ruby about her friends turning into jerks.
* MentorArchetype: Though she mentors all five of the BFFL as a whole and was the first of the five Ancients that the girls met, Obsidian's definitely the closest to Ruby Trollman, especially since Obsidian is Ruby's Ancient.
* NeverMessWithGranny: She's one of the Ancients and can still be powerful when she needs to be.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Grandma van der Troll]]

One of the five Ancients who is not only Amethyst's grandmother, but is also her granddaughter's Ancient. Similar to Obsidian, while Grandma van der Troll is obviously closer to Amethyst than the other four members of BFFL, she mentors all five of them as a whole and is always eager to listen or help if the situation calls for it. She is knowledgeable about spells, and has several magic artifacts in her possession for safekeeping. Her granddaughter is her counterpart, and TheHeart of the original Ancients.
----
* CoolOldLady: She's helpful and a good listener, and pretty powerful too.
* NeverMessWithGranny: She's quite knowledgeable about spells and has many magic artifacts for safekeeping.

The girls' science teacher at Trollzopolis High School who's one of the five Ancients who fought Simon 3,000-years ago and is eventually revealed to be the Ancient-counterpart of Sapphire, TheSmartGuy of the BFFL.
----
* ButtMonkey: He tends to get injured/captured a lot and often has other embarrassing things happen to him.
* CoolOldGuy: He's an Ancient, this is kind of their job description.
* CoolTeacher: He's the girls' science teacher and a pretty alright guy.
* HotTeacher: Sapphire commented that she finds Mr. Trollheimer attractive.
* MentorArchetype: Similar to Amethyst's grandmother and Obsidian (as well as the fact he's the science teacher to all five of the girls), Mr. Trollheimer mentors all five of the BFFL as a whole, but is closest to Sapphire.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: All the Ancients are supposed to be well over 3,000-years-old. While the other four Ancients all look suitably old, Mr. Trollheimer looks young enough to be the father of the BFFL.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Zirconia]]
!! Zirconia
[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zirconia_trollz.png]]

Topaz's Ancient who also happens to be Spinell's wife. She fought Simon long ago alongside the other Ancients, but it came at a cost--he imprisoned her within a tree for 3,000 years, draining her magic. At first, Topaz was in denial of Zirconia being her Ancient, but eventually came to accept it, especially when she and Zirconia bonded over a common interest in fashion. Much like Topaz, Zirconia can be rather quirky, but she's also a powerful sorceress and has psychic powers.
----
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: Spent 3,000 years as a tree, while conscious the entire time]].

Onyx's Ancient who also happens to Zirconia's husband. Much like his wife, Simon imprisoned him for 3,000 years--this time as a fire-breathing dragon made to guard the tree Zirconia became. Spinell tends to be snappy and sarcastic, but is good at magic, even if the long imprisonment drained his powers some. And just like his wife, Spinell has psychic powers.
----
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:Spent 3,000 years as a dragon who couldn't talk]].
* CoolOldGuy: Though more snarky than the other Ancients.
* CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler:Was transformed into a dragon for years. While he couldn't talk, it's certainly better than what happened to his wife.]]

The main villain of the series. Simon is a gremlin who's over 3,000 years old, and was banished to the Shadow World for imprisoning two of the five Ancients, turning most of the good magic evil, and destroying the world of the Trollz as they knew it. His actions led to magic being greatly reduced for Trollz as a whole. Once the BFFL accidentally free him, he intends to finish what he began and conquer the world--but luckily, the Magic of the Five can put an end to his evil plans. 222Simon's sidekick and pet. Snarf looks like a cute puppy, but can transforming into a ravenous, rampaging ogre-beast at will. Luckily, Snarf isn't too bright, and he tends to be banished alongside his master whenever their plans are foiled.
----
* ButtMonkey: Simon tends to belittle him a lot.
* CuteIsEvil: He looks like an adorable puppy, but he's actually a monster as evil as his master.
* TheDragon: He's Simon's main minion.

A trio of cheerleaders at Trollzopolis High School who're frequently mean to the BFFL. Coral in particular is spoiled, haughty, and perpetually stuck-up.
----
* AlphaBitch: All three are this, but Coral's definitely the biggest one.
* CruelCheerleader: All three are mean-spirited, stuck-up cheerleaders, with Coral even being the head cheerleader for Trollzopolis High.
* EvilLaugh: Coral has a laugh that sounds like a witch's cackle.
* FieryRedhead: Coral's hair is red and brown and she's quite bitchy.
* GirlPosse: Opal and Jade follow behind Coral and act as her main support.
* {{Jerkass}}: Even moreso than Ruby.
* LaserGuidedKarma: In the third episode, they give "late passes" to the BFFL, but when Principal Trollercrombie discovers them, he explains to the BFFL that THS-students can only get late passes from the office, meaning that the late passes Coral, Opal and Jade gave them were fake. While he's nice enough to let the BFFL off with a warning (especially once the girls make it clear that they had no idea that the passes were fake), he ends up chewing out Coral, Opal and Jade for what they did and punishes them by giving them detention. Of course, Coral blames the BFFL for her and her friends getting in trouble (even though it was their own fault), going so far as to claim that BFFL "squealed" on her and her friends.
* SatelliteCharacter: Opal and Jade don't really have any role in the series outside of being Coral's friends/fellow cheerleaders.
* TheVoiceless: Opal and Jade don't talk at all throughout the series, except for one episode. Opal also speaks in 'Hair Affair!'' video game.

Villains for episodes 7-9. Mica is a hotshot Skoot racer, while Shale is his girlfriend, and they have designs on Sapphire to help Mica win the big race.
----
* ArcVillain: Villains of The Big Race arc.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Subverted; Shale wears contacts.
* HeelFaceTurn: Mica turns good in episode 9, after the girls save his life.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: They're both jerks, but Shale admits that Mica should have been thankful for Onyx saving his life and Mica is thankful for the girls saving his life in the next episode.

The test subject for many of the Spell Moments, whether he likes it or not.
----
* TheDogBitesBack: The spell moment in "Not-So-Good Old Days" features Ruby using a spell to make Kaboom's ears grow abnormally large. Kaboom uses a caller [=ID=] that makes the spell afffect Ruby's ears as well.
* IronButtmonkey: Each episode has a "spell moment" where one of the BFFL uses Kaboom as a test subject for a spell and HilarityEnsues. No matter what happens to him on each spell moment, his next appearance shows no residual effects.
