* BadassCape: Capes are a sign of nobility so they're a big deal for nobles, and considering the cast, most of it wears one. Also, [[ImpossiblyCoolClothes they flare out in a very badass manner despite there not being any wind]].
** When Louise [[spoiler:renounces her noble status so she can rescue Tabitha from her uncle without involving Tristain in an international incident]], she gives Henrietta her cape.
** When [[spoiler:Saito]] is knighted in the third season, he is given a cape.
* BigDamnHeroes: Kirche and Tabitha quite a bit. Mr. Colbert and Kirche do this in Season 3. Heck, Kirche gets to save everybody at some point in each season.
* GenreBlindness: The Knights of the Water Spirit, for peeking on the girls' baths. Saito ''tried'' to stop them, but...
* OverlyLongName: A good way to identify nobles is by the five word or longer full name.
* TookALevelInBadass: Saito, Guiche, and Malicorne are all good examples, especially Malicorne because he was the most useless. All of them develop their skills and mature over the course of the series.

!Main Characters

[[folder:General Tropes]]
* BattleCouple: Louise and Saito follow the traditional "the Warrior keeps the enemies busy while the Mage casts" structure. They start as just a mage and her {{familiar}}, but they become a romantic couple later on.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Louise and Saito often butt heads while falling in love, '''especially''' in the first season.
* FirstKiss: They kiss during their first meeting [[AMagicContractComesWithAKiss as part of their contract establishment]].
* FromRoommatesToRomance: After being summoned to another world, Saito is forced to move into the magic academy's dorm and Louise has to share her room with him because she's his master. At first, Louise thinks of Saito as nothing but a {{familiar}} and treats him like a pet at best or slave at worst, even making him sleep on a pile of straw instead of a bed. As they spend more time together, they end up falling in love. [[spoiler:The series ends with them married.]]
* LadyAndKnight: Louise is the Bright Lady (she matures in the role, eventually) and Saito is her White Knight. He will protect her even if it means [[spoiler:standing alone against an army of 70,000 soldiers, archers and mages.]]
* MagicContractRomance: The relationship between Louise and Saito begins with their Familiar-Master contract. Their FirstKiss was [[AMagicContractComesWithAKiss part of the summoning ritual]].
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: Although it wasn't intentional, Louise pretty much kidnapped Saito when she accidentally summoned him to her world and forced him to become her {{familiar}}. The way Louise initially treats Saito borders on enslavement, but they eventually become a couple [[spoiler:and even end up married]].
* MistressAndServantBoy: Louise is officially Saito's mistress because he's her {{familiar}}. In the beginning, Louise sees Saito as nothing more than her personal servant, even going to the extreme of calling him her dog and treating him ''far worse'' than that. Their relationship becomes romantic later on, but it still takes time for Louise to stop treating Saito like a slave.
* MuggleMageRomance: Louise is a void mage and Saito is a normal boy from Japan whose only magic comes from their contract.
* OfficialCouple: The romance between Louise and Saito is the focus of much of the story. [[spoiler: The two [[HappilyEverAfter get married]] at the end of the light novels and the final anime season.]]
* SwordAndSorcerer: Louise is the Sorcerer and Saito is the Sword. She summoned him to serve as the physical fighter that would protect her while she casts her spells. Granted, she wasn't expecting a ''human'' physical fighter.

!!Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/RieKugimiya (JP), Creator/CristinaValenzuela (EN), Creator/AnnieRojas (Latin-American Spanish)

The main female character and a second-year student at the Tristain Academy of Magic...with a terrible track record in practical magic, thus earning her the runic name "Louise the Zero" for her lack of success rate and elemental attributes. Her presence is mostly based on being the third (and youngest) daughter of the aristocratic La Vallière family, who runs north-eastern Tristain. During a summoning ritual, she accidentally calls upon ordinary Japanese boy Saito Hiraga, and her life will never be the same again. Louise's hobbies are weaving and horseback riding; she is terrible at the former and exceptionally good at the latter.
-----
* ACupAngst: Her complex about her flat chest is a ''large'' part of her character as she sees it as one more area she's deficient in, and unfortunately, all but one of her romantic rivals have larger chests than her.
* AdaptationalJerkass: In the light novels, Louise is still an aggressive {{Tsundere}}, but she has more JerkWithAHeartOfGold moments and development compared to her anime counterpart. In the anime, she comes off as considerably less sympathetic due to having a nastier temper and her violent tendencies towards Saito being far more exaggerated.
* AdoptedIntoRoyalty: [[spoiler:After Tabitha's rescue, Louise, who has been stripped of rank by her own family, is adopted as a sister by Henrietta, making her second in line for the throne.]]
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: As a result of her inability to use magic she suffered major scorn from her fellow magic wielding nobles, who dubbed her "the zero".
* AlmightyJanitor: All other wizards are ranked from Dot to Square based on how many elements they can control. Louise's rank is "zero" and yet she is more powerful than any of them.
* AntiHero: She has many personality flaws (short-temper, prone to violence, inferiority complex) but she also has heroic traits, loyally protects her country and eventually matures enough to get her flaws under control.
* AntiMagic: Dispel is one of her void spells.
* BadassAdorable: The few times she can get her act together, she is as dangerous as she is weapons grade cute.
* BettyAndVeronica: In the original, the Veronica to Siesta's Betty because she is a haughty noble, and thus, out of Saito's league. [[BettyAndVeronicaSwitch The roles were switched]] in the anime.
* BigSisterWorship: She idolizes her big sister Cattleya.
* ButtMonkey: She starts getting as good as she gives in the later chapters of the novel.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: Since she only sees Saito as her familiar, she has no problem changing in front of him at first. Later, she starts hiding in a closet to change, showing that she thinks of him differently.
* CharacterExaggeration: In the anime, Louise has a ''much shorter'' fuse when dealing with Saito and his AccidentalPervert moments.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She ''hates it'' if Saito's looking or even thinking about another girl. In fact, she can't stand Saito being separated from her for too long, even if he's hanging out with his ''guy'' friends. Considering how crappy her life was before Saito came into it, however, it's understandable.
* CovertPervert: It's more prominent in the novels. Whenever we are shown her fantasies, it's rather... saucy.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Pink hair and eyes.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She warms up to Saito as time goes on.
* DevotedToYou: Despite her constant abusive treatment, Saito is deeply in love with her and will never leave her, even if it is for a chance to go back to his own world. It's implied that Saito's familiar runes subtly MindRape him, making him forget the bonds he has with his family and old world and, over time, replace them with a desire to serve and protect his master. The only confirmed effect was suppression of homesickness, which made Saito less likely to want to leave Louise, rather than rewire him into full subservience, but the experience shook Saito badly enough that he wondered how much of how he felt for her came from him anyways, putting yet another obstacle in their troubled relationship.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Explained further in the novels. She injures Saito enough that even he can't move for some of the smallest things. It's usually cheating on her.
* DomesticAbuse: Explosions an such for Saito, who is first her servant and then her boyfriend. She gets better about this as time goes on.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She tends to physically abuse Saito when she feels he's being a pervert or even looking at other girls, reaching ComedicSociopathy levels.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Has found herself in yuri-tastic situations more than once ''and'' has been subjected to lots of MarshmallowHell from her other [[WorldOfBuxom considerably stacked contemporaries]], and was kissed by girls as many times as she was kissed by Saito.
* FirstGirlWins: She's the first girl Saito meets in Halkegenia, his indisputable main LoveInterest and [[spoiler:the one he ultimately marries.]]
* GamblingRuinsLives: Louise gets a CompressedVice in the form of a descent into gambling addiction in season 3 when the group goes undercover and eventually loses all the crew's money in gambling in the most predictable way (despite Saito's best attempts to stop her, she wagered larger and larger amounts until she finally placed all of their remaining funds on one bet, all without winning a single time). All in one night (after that, she never had that problem or even been seen gambling).
* GlassCannon: She becomes such after she acquires Void magic, since while void spells are extremely powerful, they also take a long time to cast.
* GodivaHair: During the bath or hot springs scenes, though there's little to cover up.
* GreenEyedMonster: Tabitha deduced [[ThePowerOfLove her feelings for Saito]] are the most effective way to recharge Louise... and decided that jealousy was both the most effective and the easiest to provoke. It worked surprisingly well, although poor Saito would beg to differ.
* GroinAttack: Her favored method of dishing out discipline to Saito is a quick shot between the legs.
* HairColorDissonance: Her hair color is described as strawberry blonde in the novels, but it looks bright pink in the illustrations.
* HairTriggerTemper: God help you if you were the one who caused her temper to blow. Saito receives it most of the time.
* HavingABlast: Her signature spell is Explosion.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She has those moments where she shows some kindness to Saito and is more open to her feelings for him. Season 4 ditches the 'hidden' part [[spoiler:because she makes it clear to him and everyone else around that she loves him. Guess who gets married to who in the GrandFinale...]]
* HumanizingTears: She usually cries whenever she drops the {{Tsundere}} front and allows herself to be honest about her feelings towards Saito. For a good example, when she thinks him dead, she bawls her eyes out over Saito.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** Again, it's more prominent in the novel. She's always calling Saito out for being perverted, (even when the comments are directed towards her) yet she's likely [[CovertPervert just as bad as her familiar.]]
** It's also worth mentioning that she claims to hate seeing Saito get hurt, yet she frequently abuses Saito throughout the series.
* IJustWantToBeYou: When she became her 'ideal self' during the masquerade ball, she looked exactly like her older sister Cattleya.
* IneptMage: Subverted -- the reason she can't do normal magic is because of her affinity with the Void, the arcane fifth element. At the start of the series, everyone thought the Void was a myth and so ''assumed'' she was inept.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: She's loud about her family status and history because she feels like garbage for lacking magical power. As she develops her Void magic this goes away and her ACupAngst becomes more prominent.
* InSeriesNickname: "Louise the Zero"
%%%%
%%%% Please keep the Jerk tropes at one bullet point. This is for a cleaner page, proper example indentation and less opportunity for natter.
%%%%%%
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: An abusive, egotistical and nasty person who generally treats people with scorn. She can also be patriotic and a decent friend at times. She tries to emulate her gentle older sister but more often emulates the harsh one. The key word here is "tries" because she easily falls back on bad habits.
* KarmaHoudini: She never receives any consequences for abusing Saito, at all... Granted, she does find herself in embarrassing situations, but that isn't really enough to be considered LaserGuidedKarma.
* LackOfEmpathy: Initially she has no regards for Saito's feelings because she sees him as a familiar instead of a person. She did better with her fellow nobles and Henrietta.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: Her obsession with Saito will cause her to beat him if he so much as looks at another woman. When he (occasionally) gets angry and leaves she ends up hardly able to leave her bed.
* MagicalGirlfriend: She can be seeing as one to Saito, since she brings him to her magic world taking away from his world. However, she does this by basically kidnapping and enslaving him.
* MsFanservice: Despite being flat, she has scenes where she is in lingerie.
* MyHeroZero: She's nicknamed as "Louise the Zero". It signifies both her lack of aptitude in normal magic and her Void powers (considering that the Void, just like the number zero, is the absence of everything).
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise_de_La_Vallière Louise de La Vallière]] was a big deal in real life.
* TheNapoleon: Her short stature and short fuse are her two most defining characteristics.
* NominalHero: Louise has few altruistic impulses early on before CharacterDevelopment sets in. The defining moment in her maturity is [[spoiler:when Louise throws aside her noble rank to come to Tabitha's rescue]].
* OlderThanSheLooks: Looks about ten (her chest is a factor) but she's actually around 16 by our world's years by the start of the series.
* OverlyLongName: Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière.
* PortalDoor: [[spoiler:The World Door allows her to travel quickly across countries or across worlds. She only has this power in the anime. In the novels, this power is exclusive to the Pope.]]
* ThePowerOfLove: The most effective way to recharge Louise is to incite emotion, with her feelings for Saito being most effective.
* PowerOfTheVoid: Her true magical affinity is the Void... which renders her unable to cast [[PlayingWithFire Fire]], [[MakingASplash Water]], [[BlowYouAway Air]] and [[DishingOutDirt Earth]] Magic, the four common types of magic. Her spells have the effect of destroying (explosion) erasing (dispel) or reaching across space (World Door).
* PropertyOfLove: As Saito's master, Louise always refers to him as her possession or dog. She claims he belongs to her only and she can't stand it when anyone tries to take him away from her.
* PsychoPink: Her hair is bright pink and she's prone to frequent violent outbursts. She can act more mature later on, although [[{{Tsundere}} she still can get aggressive every now and then]].
* PsychosomaticSuperpowerOutage: Inverted. What recharges her willpower are negative emotions. That's why she was unable to cast her magic when she was really happy that everything was going well.
* RichBitch: The main reason she's so stuck up and arrogant is because she's a noble. Downplayed in that it's more akin to a defense mechanism from the frustrations she had to deal with in her life rather than out of actual malice, not that it's apparent at first.
* RoyalBlood: [[spoiler:Louise is told by Henrietta that her ancestor was an illegitimate child of the King.]]
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: At first, she has no problem changing in front of Saito, because she considers him to be merely a familiar.
* SquishyWizard: Saito's primary function in battle is to defend Louise while she completes the long Void chants. She can't handle enemies that get too close to her.
* StockLightNovelCalamityPrincess: Louise is a bad-tempered, aggressive noblewoman with long pink hair. She's infamously known as "Louise the Zero" for her seemingly poor magic abilities that usually result in explosions, until she's revealed to possess the extremely rare and destructive [[PowerOfTheVoid Void magic]]. She's also the main love interest in a fantasy harem story.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks exactly like her mother did [[http://i.imgur.com/6mjHU.jpg during her younger days.]]
* StylisticSuck: Her attempts at weaving are dreadful.
* SympatheticSlaveOwner: Though she mistreats and physically abuses Saito at first, she has genuine affection for him. She mellows out to him over time, [[spoiler:and they eventually marry.]]
* TextileWorkIsFeminine: Her hobby is knitting.
* ThinkingUpPortals: [[spoiler:Season Four sees her learn the "World Door" spell. In the final episode, Louise casts it to see Japan with Saito and meet Saito's parents.]]
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: She's so short and underdeveloped that she resembles a pre-teen, and lords her "mistress" status over Saito.
* TookALevelInKindness: In season 4, she's still a harsh {{Tsundere}}, but now acknowledges Saito as her boyfriend and is able to befriend her classmates, even her rival Kirche.
* TroubledAbuser: She mistreats Saito in terrible ways. However, she was bullied, and [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex has low self-esteem]].
* {{Tsundere}}: A textbook Harsh (Tsun) type. She often acts haughty and demanding to Saito, physically abuses him and has trouble expressing how much she cares about him. She can go from berating and yelling at him to kissing him in the matter of seconds. As the series continues, she's more comfortable showing him affection in front of others, but still turns violent at the drop of a hat if [[ClingyJealousGirl she thinks he's getting along too well with other girls]]. The ending of the last anime season is all about Louise's tsundere-ness over Saito.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes reflect her harsh and haughty personality.
* UnexpectedSuccessor: [[spoiler:Louise is a princess, and second in line for the throne.]]
* UpperClassEquestrian: Louise is the daughter of an aristocratic family and horseback riding is listed as her special skill.
* UptownGirl: Louise is a noble while Saito is a commoner and basically her servant.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She makes sure Saito stays safe from others.
* WhenSheSmiles: Saito says he feels happy when he sees Louise smile.
* WhipOfDominance: PlayedWith. Louise frequently carries a riding crop with her in order to "discipline" her Familiar Saito to establish her supposed ownership over him, but she [[ClingyJealousGirl mostly uses it when she gets jealous of him getting close to other women]] so it actually ends up denoting her as being an InsecureLoveInterest instead of being dominant. And while the whipping is often PlayedForLaughs it also comes across as DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale, especially later when she switches out her riding crop for a huge-ass spiked whip. She eventually gave up on the whip, as a sign of her overcoming her insecurity with regard to her relationship with Saito, although it was brought back one more time when she tried to 'train' Saito to act and look presentable as a nobleman.

[[folder:Saito]]
!!Saito Hiraga
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/SatoshiHino (JP), Jonathan Meza (EN), Creator/JoseAngelTorres (Latin-American Spanish)
[[quoteright:227:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiraga_saito.png]]

Saito is a Japanese boy who, while picking up his laptop after attempting to get it repaired in Akihabara, gets sucked into a portal and into Tristain. As a Familiar he was treated as more of a servant-dog by Louise, although as time passed he came to love her and decided to protect her at all costs.
-----
* AlmightyJanitor: As a peasant-style familiar, his rank was as low as palace servants if not lower, yet his ability as Gandalfr is more powerful than many of the student nobles. [[spoiler:This trope become less pronounced after Henrietta promotes him to royal knight, and thus a nobleman in his own right.]]
* AttemptedRape: Saito has a bad habit of expressing his love for Louise physically, and at the worst possible times, when she doesn't want it. The worst instance is in the second novel where he tries to rape Louise because he assumes that she wants to have sex no matter how many times she says no. He begins to make moves on a sleeping Louise, hugging her and kissing her cheek, before moving to lift her dress, which is when Louise wakes up. He confronts her with the idea that she loves him when she demands an explanation, and she vigorously denies it, no matter how much he insists. Finally he moves to kiss her, and she responds violently. At worst its an AttemptedRape, at best it's Saito massively overestimating the level of their relationship, and subsequently making a move. While she ''had'' been giving him [[{{Tsundere}} somewhat mixed signals]] prior to this and continues to do so for much of the series, he still comes out looking pretty bad, though it's eventually shown that [[spoiler:it wasn't entirely by free will.]]
* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: [[spoiler:His knighthood, and in the novels, he's also consecrated as an Imperial Guard Sub-Commander.]]
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:At the end of season 2, he was well and truly dead. Then Tiffania used an heirloom to revive him.]]
* BeyondTheImpossible: His familiar contract breaks so many of the established rules that eventually the cast just rolls with it: he's human, he doesn't obey his master, [[spoiler:his contract can be negated, re-established, extended to a second mage....]] On the other hand, Louise's classmates aren't at all surprised that "the zero" failed to properly cast the summoning spell.
* BodyguardCrush: As Louise's {{familiar}}, Saito is bound to protect her. Later on, he does it willingly because of his personal feelings for her.
* {{Brainwashed}}: It's implied that the reason he stays with Louise in spite of her abusive treatment is that his familiar runes subtly MindRape him, making him forget the bonds he has with his family and old world and, over time, replace them with a desire to serve and protect his master. [[spoiler:It takes importance in the light novels, where the MindRape from the contract is undone and Saito gets all the feelings of homesickness back in a large burst and complicates his relationship with Louise.]]
* ButtMonkey: Lots of comic abuse comes his way and not just from Louise, although she is the greatest contributor.
* CharacterExaggeration: If you read the novel and then watch the anime, Novel Saito is ''much'' less perverted.
* ChickMagnet: Saito has attracted most of the female cast in the series. Surprisingly, he was unpopular with girls before the start of the series.
* ChivalrousPervert: He's a NiceGuy, but he's ''also'' a 17-year-old human male. He may be a pervert, but it's obvious that he cares a lot for the girls around him, especially Louise, who in turn does care for him [[{{Tsundere}} in her own violent way.]]
* CrazyJealousGuy: While he's not as violent about it as Louise, he has shown to be ''very'' jealous whenever other guys flirt with her.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: The perverted guy who doesn't know how to keep his foot out of his mouth is also a determined MageKiller.
* CultureBlind: He's ignorant of anything not related to Japanese culture, like the IKissYourHand gesture.
* DeniedFoodAsPunishment: On the odd occasion that Louise doesn't use her Explosion spell, she denies him dinner.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: At the start of the light novels, he goes as far as using online dating simply to spice up his life.
* {{Determinator}}: He took on a whole army for Louise.
* DevotedToYou: She won't admit it at first, but Louise can't stand being away from Saito. She ends up hardly able to leave her bed when he gets angry at her and leaves. Later, she outright states she has no reason to go on if Saito is not with her.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Played with. While Louise rarely shows him respect, he has been publicly honored many times for his heroic deeds.
* DudeWheresMyReward: Inverted. He's been rewarded twice when he wasn't seeking one in either case. [[spoiler:First with knighthood and then with his own ''fiefdom''.]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: After his victory over Guiche, Saito becomes popular with the commoners and some nobles in the school, both male and female.
* {{Familiar}}: Of Louise. He's unusual in that familiars usually aren't human. [[spoiler:He later learns this is standard for Void mages.]]
* FishOutOfWater: He's a guy from early 21st century Japan who got pulled into a fantasy version of Medieval Europe.
* {{Flanderization}}: Saito becomes increasingly perverted as the anime goes on.
* FlashStep: He's described as moving so quickly you can only hear footsteps.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: He got amused at the sight of Louise and Tiffania groping each other in the women's bath. Also, he got turned on when he saw Montmorency and Beatrice kiss while under the influence of the LovePotion.
* HappinessInSlavery: Louise basically enslaved him and treats him like dirt, but he still loves her and stays by her side.
* TheHeroDies: [[spoiler:In the last episode of season 2, Saito sacrifices himself to make sure that Henrietta's army can escape. That is, until he is BackFromTheDead due to Tiffania's intervention.]]
* HeroesPreferSwords: The Derflinger is his standard weapon. He could use any other kind of weapon and his Gandalfr rune would make him skilled with it but he stays with swords.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:He takes on an army of ''70,000'' to facilitate the escape of Louise, Henrietta, and the rest. [[BackFromTheDead He got better]] thanks to Tiffania's magic.]]
* IChooseToStay: At the end of season 1, he gives up a chance at going to home to help Louise repel a Reconquestia invasion.
* IdiotBall: There are ''so many freaking times'' where Saito could've easily avoided Louise's wrath by simply explaining the situation in clear terms, that this becomes the only explanation.
* InstantExpert: Justified; being the reincarnation of Gandalfr, he is gifted with the skill to use any weapon he touches. In the anime, this only works as long as it's ''meant'' to be a weapon.
* LimitedWardrobe: Saito is rarely seen without the original clothes he wore when he was pulled to Halkeginia from Earth, [[spoiler:even after he was knighted]], where he simply wears a cape over his clothes.
* LovableSexManiac: Especially in the anime, where his lecherousness and perverted antics are taken up to eleven. A lot of Saito's perverted actions, which on occasion borderlines as BlackComedyRape, tends to be [[DoubleStandard shrugged off by some fans unlike Louise's abuse]].
* LoveMartyr: Louise regularly whips and/or blasts him, but Saito can't help to still have feelings for her and will do anything to protect her. [[spoiler:He even faces an army of 70,000 by himself, just so Louise can escape.]]
* MuggleInMageCustody: At the beginning of the series, he becomes a {{familiar}} (and basically a slave) of Louise. Over time, she mellows out to him.
* NiceGuy: More noticeable in the novels, considering the CharacterExaggeration in the anime, which makes him all the more undeserving of Louise's abuse.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: At the end of volume 8 [[spoiler:he and Louise are reunited, Siesta says she'll step aside, and he and Louise retire to their bed for the night. Then he proceeds to start wondering if he's dreaming and [[TemptingFate starts to insult Louise's chest so she'll hit him and he will see if it's a dream]] making her freak out and hit him, thus about tripling her insecurity complex, and ruining their relationship's chance at becoming official.]]
* {{Nosebleed}}: Even in the novels this is a sign of his perversion.
* OneHeadTaller: He's about a head taller than Louise, his TinyTyrannicalGirl of a mistress/girlfriend.
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:It's pretty damn literal, considering the fact that he faced an army of ''70,000'' men. He incapacitated a lot of them before going down, and when he did, it was because of archers. Everyone that got into sword range was taken out.]]
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: He was walking down the street when suddenly he was in the courtyard of a magic school.
* RidiculouslyAverageGuy: Explained in the light novels. He has such a mundane life he's described as average at EVERYTHING.
* StepfordSmiler: He may have become one due to Louise's unrelenting abuse, as he says with a breezy smile on his face that adapting is all he's good at and he's used to sleeping on the floor.
* StockLightNovelHero: Saito is the UrExample of the "Isekai" version of the trope -- he is an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent that is summoned by accident to a fantasy world. While he is a NiceGuy and somewhat powerful, the EscapistCharacter aspects of the character are extremely subdued as he is only the {{Deuteragonist}} compared to the female lead. In fact, many early isekai protagonists that followed began as WishFulfillment "fan fics" that promoted Saito's role into the spotlight.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: Sometimes Saito will be powerful enough that he can take on an entire army and at other times, all it takes is a single skilled mage to give him a lot of trouble in a fight. How strong he is will usually depend on the needs of the plot (and whether or not he has Derflinger with him).
* SubordinateExcuse: Eventually, being Louise's Familiar becomes just an excuse to stay with her.
* SummonEverymanHero: Averted. Louise wasn't trying to summon an everyman ''or'' a hero. She was trying to summon a magical creature like her classmates that would be little more than her pet.
* SupportingProtagonist: He's the "Familiar of Zero" in the title, but he's following Louise around.
* ThouShaltNotKill: At least in the Light Novel, Saito fought trying to resist against the 70.000-soldiers army without killing anyone.
* TookALevelInKindness: In season 4, just like Louise, the "chivalric" part of his ChivalrousPervert trait makes gains against the latter.
* TrappedInAnotherWorld: Due to being "accidentally" summoned by Louise. [[spoiler:Later events demonstrate that the boundary between worlds is more porous than he believed.]]
* TsurimeEyes: An odd example that goes with his CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass example. These only show up in dangerous situations
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Julio. They have their disagreements, but become friends as the series goes on.
* WhatMeasureIsAMook: Averted. Saito refused to kill any of the 70.000 men-army because Saito does not consider himself a soldier and is not willing to see the lives of allies and enemies as expendable tools.

Derflinger is an ancient talking sword which Saito and Louise bought in a local blacksmith in order to make Saito look more intimidating. He and Saito struck up an immediate friendship and have been partners in battle ever since.
-----
* CoolSword: A talking sword that, in addition to being well made, can also absorb magic energy.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:Episode 10 of Zero no Tsukaima F where he shatters trying to absorb an attack from the ancient dragon. It turns out he resided in Saito's Gandalfr runes all along, ''not'' in the sword itself.]]
* EccentricMentor: Derflinger is always there to provide advice to Saito and to help him grow as a person. He also has a laughing streak and enjoys teasing people.
* EnergyAbsorption: One of Derflinger's powers is absorbing spells. Higher level spells take longer to absorb.
* ExcaliburInTheRust: Looks like a piece of junk but is an awesome sword.
* TheFogOfAges: Derflinger remembers little of his own life, due in large part to his age.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Derflinger is about six-thousand years old, and initially, he looked the part.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Saito/Louise. He also encourages Saito to perv on other girls.
* TalkingWeapon: The hiltguard functions as his mouth..
* WeaponWieldsYou: Another one of his powers is to take control of his partner's body, but this costs him mana and so he can't do it for long.

Louise's classmate and a Fire Mage, whose power is drawn from her strong passion for money. Her family has an intense dislike for the La Vallieres, and thus treats Louise with disdain. She flirts and has dated (and heavily implied in the anime to have slept with) many of the Academy's male students, but falls in love with Saito. Her familiar is a giant flame-tailed salamander she creatively calls "Flame".
------
* AlphaBitch: In the early parts of the story she was the typical, smug, popular, and talented queen bee of the Academy who had a mean rivalry with the less popular protagonist, and often played an antagonistic role. As she experienced CharacterDevelopment, she became more of a LovableAlphaBitch.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: She is from "Germania" (implied to be the world's Germany) but her dark skin tone looks like she came from somewhere else.
* AttentionWhore: She's very vain and enjoys being the center of attention at the Academy
* BigBreastPride: She's proud of her assets and enjoys subjecting others to MarshmallowHell. She also enjoys taunting her rival Louise about having a "childish body".
* BlackSheep: She's from a noble military family that is very strict, and her carefree and free-spirit demeanor made her an outcast. They attempted to marry her off in an ArrangedMarriage, which she narrowly avoided by traveling abroad and getting into a WizardingSchool.
* BlueBlood: She's from a noble family in Germania, and has the arrogance and vanity often associated with upper-class nobles.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She's very well endowed, which attracts the jealousy of some girls and the admiration of many men.
* CustomUniformOfSexy: Her uniform is significantly less modest in regards to her chest, due to its large CleavageWindow.
* DemotedToExtra: Compared to Season 1, her screen-time is slowly reduced season after season. It's quite possible that this is because she eventually loses interest in Saito (to be fair, it's not like Saito reciprocates her feelings...which is only natural if either side of a relationship isn't interested in the person pining after them) and the role of Louise's [[TheRival rival]] is taken by Siesta.
* DudeMagnet: She's extremely popular with the male population at the Academy, to the point some girls resent her for it.
* ElementalHairColors: She's a fire mage and has red hair.
* ElementalPersonalities: She's a fire mage with a loud personality.
* FemmeFatale: Kirche has a special talent for persuasion, as she does not think twice about using her sex appeal to gather secret information, like in Gallia when they tried to gather information on Tabitha's whereabouts. A very small amount of men could resist this persistence, which does not include the academy boys including Saito himself, until after Fouquet's debut.
* FieryRedhead: She's a redhead with an energetic, passionate and fiery personality.
* FierySensuality: She's a fire mage and has a special talent for using her sexuality to get what she wants. Only a small number of males have the willpower to say no to her. She herself likes to play up that theme
-->'''Kirche:''' Love and fire are the destinies of the Von Zerbst family. I only wish to burn in flames of love!
* FireIceDuo: Becomes the fire to Tabitha's ice after the two become best friends.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: She fell in love with Mr. Colbert while nursing him back to health.
* GiverOfLameNames: Her Salamander (a fire breathing lizard) is named "Flame".
* GoodBadGirl: Regardless of the truth of her sexual exploits, she's not ashamed of it.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She's an outgoing girl who enjoys partying and heavy drinking.
* IHaveBoobsYouMustObey: She's not above using impressive assets to get men to do favors for her. She even once used her breasts to get a shopkeeper to lower the price of a sword she wanted to buy for Saito.
* IronicName: Her name means "church" and she has a reputation as a slut.
* LadykillerInLove: She was a DudeMagnet who ReallyGetsAround but she falls hard for Mr. Colbert later in the story and becomes dedicated to pursuing him.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Starts off the series as a bully towards Louise, but becomes nicer as the series continues. By this time, she doesn't act rude anymore and often ends up being the gang's big damn hero along with either Tabitha or Mr. Colbert.
* MoralityPet: Most of her sympathetic moments come from her genuine friendship with Tabitha.
* MsFanservice: Her character is often played for {{fanservice}}. She has one of the biggest busts in the main cast and her school uniform is far more revealing compared to the other girls. She also gets a gratuitous BathtubScene early in the story.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_the_Great Sofie Frederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg]], maiden name of UsefulNotes/CatherineTheGreat, one of the most powerful monarchs of Russia.
* NationalStereotypes: From what she claims, Germania is the land of sexiness and passion, which is why she strives to be a sensual and passionate person.
* OverlyLongName: "Kirche Augusta Frederica von Anhalt Zerbst" that's six words.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:After learning of Tabitha's DarkAndTroubledPast and seeing her haunted by nightmares in her sleep, she decides to lie beside Tabitha and embrace her, telling her everything will be alright.]]
* PlayingWithFire: She's a mage that specializes with fire magic.
* PornStash: In the anime, her ''family heirloom'' is one. [[spoiler:Which is one of the clues that there are things summoned from the Earth, specifically Japan.]]
* ProudBeauty: Only a few male characters [[NotDistractedByTheSexy are unaffected by Kirche's good looks]]. She knows this and loves to flaunt and use her beauty to get what she wants.
* ReallyGetsAround: Kirche seems to date a lot of guys and is heavily implied to be promiscuous (One scene in season 1 shows her half-naked, telling a boy outside to "wait an hour later"), though later descriptions suggest that she just likes to [[TheTease string guys along]] and doesn't actually sleep with any of them. But (barring her SeductionAsOneUpmanship scheme) she won't interfere with anyone who's already in a relationship, as she has no intentions to die over another girl's boyfriend.
* RedheadsAreRavishing: The redheaded Kirche is highly attractive, flirtatious, and wears revealing clothing that shows off her big bosom. She naturally attracts the attention of all men around her.
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to best friend Tabitha's blue; high energy, talkative, flirty, with the magic power to match.
* TheRival: Due to having FeudingFamilies, she's Louise's main rival in the Academy early parts of the story. Eventually, she becomes more of a FriendlyRival.
* SeductionAsOneUpmanship: Her attempts to seduce Saitou have more to do with her trying to one-up Louise than any actual romantic feelings for him.
* SultryBangs: The flirtatious Kirche's bangs hang over her right eye. She is considered incredibly attractive by most male characters and she has no qualms with using her sex appeal to get what she wants.
* TeacherStudentRomance: In Season Three, Kirche falls in love with Mr. Colbert, and she tries to instigate a relationship.
* TheTease: She likes to flirt with Saito, but only in the first season until she switches her interest to Mr. Colbert. In general, she uses this as part of FemmeFatale act.
* TookALevelInKindness: She goes from being a rude bully to a gentle and caring girl who will do anything to protect her loved ones, and is even able to befriend her former rival Louise.
* TranquilFury: In the light novel, she describes herself as being calmer the angrier she gets.
* TsurimeEyes: Befitting her aggressive demeanor and a contrast with her best friend, she has sharp eyes.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: A variation; she keeps her family heirloom in ''her skirt''.
* TheVonTropeFamily: Her family name is von Anhalt Zerbst and she is from Germania.

The soft-spoken, book-reading best friend of Kirche and classmate of Louise with a mysterious past. She specializes in Wind Magic and has a dragon familiar named Sylphid.
-----
* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: [[spoiler:She becomes Queen of Gallia after Joseph's ultimate defeat.]]
* BadassAdorable: Introverted, cute, short, and a powerful and strong willed Triangle class mage. She's also a knight.
* BadassBookworm: She's a capable mage and most often, she can be found reading.
* BespectacledCutie: She's a demure and quiet CuteBookworm who wears glasses.
* BlowYouAway: Wind magic is her specialty.
* BlueMeansSmartOne: Tabitha has light blue hair and she's the CuteBookworm of Louise's class.
* BreakoutCharacter: She has her own spinoff manga named "Tabitha's Adventures".
* BrokenBird: She used to be a cheerful girl, until her mother was driven insane after taking a drugged drink meant for her. Now she rarely shows any emotion.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her hair and eye colors are both light blue.
* CuteBookworm: Tabitha is a rather cute and quiet girl who is usually seen reading.
* CynicismCatalyst: Tabitha was once a lively and optimistic girl with a happy family, but her father's assassination and the ensuing fallout turned her to an EmotionlessGirl.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was the Crown Princess of Gallia, whose father, the Duke of Orléans, was killed in a succession dispute with his older brother Joseph, who then became King. Her mother was driven insane after taking a drugged drink meant for Charlotte, and she was sent on dangerous missions as a means to distance her from the Gallian throne and hopefully have her killed in the line of duty. [[spoiler:Her mother gets better in Season 4.]]
* DopeSlap: Sometimes does this with [[spoiler:Sylphid]] when she becomes too annoying.
* DragonRider: She can ride her dragon familiar to fly through the sky.
* ElementalHairColors: She's a blue-haired character that routinely uses wind and ice magic. She also has ElementalEyeColors since her eyes are blue as well.
* ElementalPersonalities: She has ice powers and definitely has the cold personality that comes with it.
* EmotionlessGirl: Of the repressed variety, as a result of the fallout from her father's assassination; there's plenty of emotion that is not expressed.
* FireIceDuo: Becomes the ice to Kirche's ice after the two become best friends.
* {{Foil}}: To her best friend Kirche in many ways. Kirche is taller and more [[BustContrastDuo physically well-endowed whereas Tabitha is the opposite]]. Kirche is also much more outgoing and flirtatious with men whereas Tabitha is more of TheStoic. Appearance-wise, Kirche has red hair with dark skin whereas Tabitha possesses blue hair and a much lighter complexion. Their roles in the story also seem to be mirror opposites, as Kirche falls for Saito very early in the series but seems to lose interest in him after the first season, while Tabitha had very little interest in Saito at the beginning of the series but falls for him when the show has reached a much later stage.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale. We're not entirely sure, but she attends the OfficialCouple's wedding and looks genuinely happy for them.]]
* HopelessSuitor: She doesn't start falling for Saito till the very end of Season 3, after he goes out of his way to rescue her from her uncle. She fruitlessly tries to woo him at points in Season 4, and in one incident, even tells Louise that if they got into another fight, she would [[spoiler:simply throw her rank as queen around and forcefully marry him]].
* AnIcePerson: Being a Triangle Mage with a Wind specialty, she's adept at creating blizzards and icicle javelins.
* IcyBlueEyes: Her blue eyes fit her calm and collected personality. She can use ice magic to boot.
* LoveMartyr: She still loves her mother and is very devoted to her, even though she's insane and can't recognize her as her daughter.
* MagicKnight: She's a knight and so she can handle herself in magicless close combat.
* NotSoStoic: Her feelings peek through once in a while, especially [[spoiler:whenever she remembers her family, or when she fell in love with Saito late in season 3.]].
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "Tabitha" isn't her real name; that's the name of the doll her mother gave her. Her real name is Charlotte Helene Orléans.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: She's a noblewoman who wears white tights, which create one of many contrasts with her less modest best friend.
* TheQuietOne: She rarely talks, even to her best friend.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to best friend Kirche's red; quiet, cautious, associated magic etc.
* ReiAyanamiExpy: She has the bobbed light blue hair and eyes, very fair skin, a short stature relative to her age, a DarkAndTroubledPast, and a quiet and deeply stoic demeanor.
* RescueRomance: She begins to like Saito a lot after he goes out of his way to rescue her despite her attempts at attacking him earlier.
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: She's an introverted girl with light blue hair, but rather than a ShrinkingViolet, she's just quiet and not interested in socializing.
* StockingFiller: Rarely goes without her white stockings.
* TheStoic: She rarely shows emotion, even in battle.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Despite her quietness and chilly appearance, she's a nice girl.
* TerseTalker: She speaks in short sentences, usually only saying a few words at the most.

Louise's classmate and a consummate playboy [[LadykillerInLove despite being in love with Montmorency]]. He always carries an artificial rose with him, the stem of which is his wand. He also likes to dote upon his familiar, a giant mole named Verdandi. As his familiar indicates, his specialty is earth magic and he prefers to fight using bronze statues called Valkyries. He is named after Antoine V de Gramont, Duke of Guiche, a French military figure.
------
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Montmorency, his on-and-off girlfriend. Guiche may be [[TheCasanova a consummate womanizer]], and Montmorency a {{Tsundere}} ClingyJealousGirl, but they ''do'' love each other.
* BetaCouple: With Montmorency. Their relationship experiences similar ups and downs to Saito/Louise, but to a lesser extent.
* BishieSparkle: Often creates sparkles, whether or not he's trying to charm the Girl of the Week.
* TheCasanova: In every episode there's a good chance he'll be flirting with a new girl.
* ChickMagnet: He is and should be one, but the moment other girls (usually Montmorency) end up seeing or knowing about him two-timing or committing perverse acts (which is... a lot of times) he'd better say goodbye to his pride... and three years of his life.
* CommitmentIssues: Despite his love for Montmorency, he can't bring himself to stick to just her and instead has to flirt with the first years.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: One the best examples; after their duel early in season 1 he eventually becomes Saito's go-to-guy for help.
* DishingOutDirt: He's an earth mage.
* EnsignNewbie: During the war with Albion, immediately after he finishes basic training he finds himself assigned as a company commander to replace one who deserted. Thankfully one of the sergeants there is able to guide him.
* HandsomeLech: His good looks are why his initial flirting is often successful. Then Montmorency or one of his many previous paramours walk by, see him flirting, and tell him off. At which point, the current girl also tells him off.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Once one gets past his overwhelming narcissism, Guiche is actually a nice guy. By season three, he and Saito are good friends. In the light novels, too, [[spoiler:when Saito was presumed dead, Guiche erected a statue of him in honor of his friend. Unfortunately, Louise and Siesta accidentally destroyed it...]]
* LadykillerInLove: Towards Montmorency. It's unfortunate that he has CommitmentIssues because she's the only girl he's truly interested in.
* LargeHam: Regularly hamming it up with his rose and his familiar affection and his charming.
* MarionetteMaster: His signature style is conjuring statues to battle for him.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoine_V_de_Gramont Antoine V de Gramont, Duke of Guiche]], a French nobleman and Lieutenant General.
* NumberTwo: Ironically, ''Saito'' is the Vice Captain of Guiche's knight unit, the Ondine Knights, while Guiche is TheLeader but no one cares and they seem to treat Saito as the leader more than Guiche. Guiche doesn't mind much.
* PrincelyYoungMan: A nobleman PrinceCharming type who uses this guise to flirt with younger girls.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Verdandi is the Norse Goddess of the Present.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His familiar Verdandi is named after the Norn of the Present from Myth/NorseMythology. Some fansubs made incorrect variations, either out of ignorance of the source material or immediate associations with Belldandy of ''Manga/AhMyGoddess'', whose original name is the same as that of the source material but was fallen victim to DubNameChange when the said series was exported to America.
* SuckMyRose: He uses a rose instead of a wand as a magical focus, to complement his Casanova appearance.
* TsurimeEyes: Inverted as he's not normally one for seriousness or strength of will of any kind.

She is one of the few girls in the series who never falls in love with Saito, instead becoming friends and teammates with him.
-----
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Guiche. She may be a {{Tsundere}} ClingyJealousGirl, and Guiche [[TheCasanova a consummate womanizer]], but they ''do'' love each other.
* BetaCouple: With Guiche. Their relationship experiences similar ups and downs to Saito/Louise, but to a lesser extent.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Not to such violent extents as Louise, but she doesn't like it whenever Guiche is in another of his [[TheCasanova exploits]].
* ElementalEyeColors: She's a water-type mage with blue eyes.
* InSeriesNickname: "Monmon", courtesy of Saito.
* MakingASplash: She's a water mage.
* OverlyLongName: Montmorency Margarita la Fere de Montmorency
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: The difference in modesty compared to [[ZettaiRyouiki Louise]] can be compared to the level of {{Tsundere}}.
* RegalRinglets: Her hair is styled into old-fashioned ringlets because she's a noblewoman and has servants to do it for her. Two of the ringlets are in front of her ears, making it double as OjouRinglets.
* RepetitiveName: She has "Montmorency" as a given name and surname.
* {{Tsundere}}: Not as much as Louise, but she is this to Guiche. She states that she's dating him to "kill time", but gets jealous when he flirts with other girls. Then she gets teary-eyed when he goes off to do something dangerous.
* TsurimeEyes: Many of her scenes involve her getting angry with Guiche, so she tends to sport these quite often.

A chubby student in Louise's class, is a wind mage with an owl familiar. Becomes much more important and useful in Seasons 3 & 4.
-----
* AmbiguouslyBi: He's clearly into girls, but has some otherwise questionable moments like when he seems to take an obscene amount of pride in having manboobs and even shoves Saito's face into his own manboobs.
* AscendedExtra: Doesn't get to do much until Season 3, when he becomes a member of the Knights of the Undine.
* BigEater: Rare is the scene where he is not eating.
* BlowYouAway: He's a wind mage.
* BlushSticker: Pink blush marks are frequently an addition to his face.
* CrazyPrepared: He always carries a lot of spoons on his person, so he can eat no matter the situation.
* FatBestFriend: Regularly seen alongside Guiche for the contrast in appearance and demeanor.
* FatIdiot: Not dumb, but he acts pretty silly and his stomach is harder to miss.
* SuperSenses: He has a spell that lets him see things up to 15 miles away.
* ThrowTheDogABone: He starts to get girls later in the series, then he's dumped in the third season due to the peeping incident. Then regains them in Season 4 for being the Queen's guards.

A well-endowed half-elf who Saito remembered as "the big-breasted fairy who saved his life" once. She appears in the third season as a regular character, and also has feelings for Saito.
-----
* AllLovingHeroine: She is as friendly with humans as with elves, despite the FantasticRacism on both sides, and even the AlphaBitch who bullied her is eventually won over.
* BoobBasedGag:
** Tiffania's enormous boobs are the source of many jokes, such as people wondering if they are real.
** During the Sleipnir Ball (in the anime), she masquerades as Saito; Louise thought the one she saw was Saito, but looking down a bit, she saw a huge chest, because the magic did not remove Tiffania's chest size.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her breasts are often called to "debate" by many of the male characters in the series, and all like them.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: By the power of both her huge tits and [[NiceGirl her genuinely kind and sweet personality]], the other female students at the academy also like her along with the male students.
* FantasticRacism: She has to hide her UnusualEars to avoid the prejudices that elves face in human society.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: She was capable of reviving Saito without any magical artefacts (Ring of Andvari being one), by filling him with magical energy (and thus sacrificing her memento). Later, the powers Saito gained [[spoiler:upon becoming Lifdrasil]] made him into a container for magical power, with the added ability to unleash it as destructive spells (on command of his master), or revive himself by using some of it.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale. She attends the OfficialCouple's wedding and looks genuinely happy for them.]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Her long golden hair is matched by golden personality; she's the nicest and friendliest mage at the academy.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Her father is human. She inherited her Void magic and buxom figure from her father's side of the family. Both traits are unheard of in elves.
* IJustWantToBeYou: She turns into Saito because of a magic mirror that temporarily turns whoever looks into it into who they most want to be.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Again, very sweet, very kind, and also ignorant of the world outside her village. Despite the badblood between humans and elves she has nothing against anyone.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: As a contrast to the other well-endowed mage on campus, Kirche, who is far more likely to flaunt it. One example of this is when she asks Saito to check if her chest is real by touching them.
* LoveEpiphany: Although she always seemed to admire Saito, she seems to start developing feelings for him after he defends her during her inquisition trial, and in the beginning of Season 4 outright wonders about those feelings she has when Saito is around.
* MindControl: Her [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Mind Wipe]] spell erases memories of events and dispels any mind-control magic used on a target. This is her signature spell as a void mage.
* MsFanservice: No surprise, she is the most buxom character of the series.
* NaiveEverygirl: Pure hearted girl whose insecure about her body and is picked on by an alpha bitch? Check, at first. After the inquisition she becomes popular and wiser, without losing her kind nature.
* NiceGirl: Friendly, compassionate, sweet-natured; the nicest girl at the Academy.
* NoSocialSkills: She grew up alone so she has no experience with socializing.
* PointyEars: She's a half-elf with the long and pointy ears characteristic of her race.
* PowerOfTheVoid: Like Louise, she is a void mage. Her signature here is erasing memories and mind control.
* RescueRomance: She begins to develop feelings for Saito after he defends her during one of the student's inquisition in Season 3. It gradually turns into a LoveEpiphany by Season 4.
* TaremeEyes: Reflecting her gentle personality and contrasting with Louise, her main rival.
* ThirdOptionLoveInterest: The "fight" for Saito's heart was narrowed to Siesta and Louise, until Tiffania made her debut. [[spoiler:It intensified when she unintentionally contracted Saito as her familiar.]]

A priest-knight from the Holy Empire of Romaglia sent as transferee to Tristain Magic Academy. Julio is sent by the Pope as a support for Henrietta's expedition to Albion, now in political strife after the fall of the royal family.
-----
* TheAce: Julio is ''infuriatingly'' good at absolutely ''everything''. This is justified to a degree, as [[spoiler:he's also a Void familiar with more control over his magic than Louise; his primary ability is to control magical creatures]].
* AmbiguouslyBi: Julio is canonically in love with Louise but may or may not also have an interest in her boyfriend Saito as shown when he tells Saito whether jokingly or not that he loves him and wants to kiss him as well as Louise.
* TheBeastmaster: Has his dragon tamed despite the fact that he isn't a mage. [[spoiler:This is due to his power as Vindalfr.]]
* ChickMagnet: Much like Saito, he's pretty popular with ladies.
* DemotedToExtra: Zigzagged. He's important in season 2 but in Season 3 he's largely a character in a crowd setting, and only gets a few lines at most. Then in season 4 he becomes much more important.
* DualityMotif: He has one red eye, the other blue -- called the "Moon Eyes" after the twin moons of Halkeginia.
* GoodShepherd: A 'flamen' (holy man/cleric) on loan to Henrietta. It's downplayed in that he claims he has "returned to secular life" upon arrival at the academy.
* {{Irony}}: Saito is the harem male lead of the series but ironically, Julio happens to be able to attract girls in even greater numbers than him.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: A downplayed version--he's named after a Romaglian dictator who shares the same name as [[UsefulNotes/JuliusCaesar a certain famous Roman emperor]].
* NewTransferStudent: He joins the cast when he's sent as a transfer student to Tristain Academy of Magic.
* PassingTheTorch: In the Light Novels, he later becomes [[spoiler:Josette's familiar as the new '''Mjöðvitnir''' after Vitorrio's death.]]
* PrincelyYoungMan: A PrinceCharming Type. Most of the female population at the academy swoons over him because of his chivalric attitude.
* TheTrickster: Exploiting harem hijinks for one. It's unusual since he's [[spoiler:a loyal familiar for the Pope.]]
* TsurimeEyes: Unlike Saito, he has these most of the time instead of just in dangerous situations.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Saito, eventually. They don't always get along, but Julio helps Saito in his relationship with Louise. [[spoiler:He even ends up being Saito's best man in his wedding.]]
* WarriorMonk: A priest with a sword in hand.

* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her human form has blue hair and eyes.
* EnergeticAndSoftSpokenDuo: Unlike her quiet and stoic master, Sylphid is very energetic and outgoing.
* {{Familiar}}: She's the familiar that Tabitha summoned and made a contract with.
* HotInHumanForm: She's a dragon who can take the form of a voluptuous woman.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Because she's a dragon, she doesn't grasp the nudity taboo and has no problems with being naked in front of Saito and others.
* SexySlitDress: Her human form wears a dress with a slit on both sides to show off her legs.

A maid at the academy. She has a crush on Saito, and unlike Louise she treats him very kindly. She seems to not mind Saito getting punished because she ends up taking care of him anyways.
-----
* AdaptationalJerkass: The anime has Siesta appearing in events she was no part of originally, which often results in her scheming and getting in Louise and Saito's way. Because of this, the anime makes Siesta come off as very clingy and ready to get in the way of Louise and Saito's relationship at every given opportunity.
* AscendedExtra: In the anime, Siesta appears in many situations and events that originally, in the novels, she was no part of.
* BeAWhoreToGetYourMan: She is originally a modest and gentle maid, but falling in love with Saito makes her push herself too much. Considering Louise's flat chest, her own sex appeal is one of her better "weapons".
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Louise's Veronica because she is a [[spoiler:Japanese]] commoner instead of a European-ish noblewoman. [[BettyAndVeronicaSwitch The roles are arguably switched]] in the anime where she is more conniving.
* BigBreastPride: After the first season, she becomes very boastful about her breast size (thanks to picking up on [[BuxomBeautyStandard Saito's preference for large breasts]]). She frequently brags about her large breasts to Louise, knowing full well that her direct love rival has a major case of ACupAngst.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She seems like a cute and sweet {{Meido}}, coming across as the "nice one" of Saito's admirers especially when compared to his {{Tsundere}} master/girlfriend. However, as the anime series goes on, Siesta shows herself to be vicious, clingy and manipulative as she schemes to take Saito from Louise and actively tries to create situations that will get him hurt.
* ButNotTooForeign: [[spoiler:She is the descendant of a UsefulNotes/WorldWarII [[UsefulNotes/ImperialJapan Japanese pilot]] who strayed into Tristain.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: Once Tiffania shows up, Siesta shares Louise's utter contempt for the poor half-elf girl because both see her as yet another love rival aiming for Saito.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale. We're not entirely sure, but she attends the OfficialCouple's wedding and looks genuinely happy for them, but it isn't entirely clear if she will still work for them.]]
* MeaningfulName: A relatively minor example in that one of the databooks mentions that her "hobby" is napping. The word ''siesta'' is Spanish for "short nap taken in the afternoon".
* {{Meido}}: A servant in the academy that sports the classic maid look. In Season 3, she is appointed by Henrietta to be Saito's personal maid.
* MsFanservice: From Season 2, she [[InvokedTrope invokes]] her sex appeal, mainly by showing off her big breasts, to try and win out over Louise.
* NakedApron: InvokedTrope on one occasion (see BeAWhoreToGetYourMan) and to ''great'' effect.
* NiceGirl: Initially, she was a kind girl who treated Saito with more respect and care than Louise did. As the fight over him escalated, [[TookALevelInJerkass she gradually began to turn less cordial]].
* OnlyOneName: She doesn't have a surname due to being a commoner.
* RivalsTeamUp: She considers Louise her rival, but is willing to put her grudge with Louise aside and work with her to [[EnemyMine prevent other female rivals]] [[ClingyJealousGirl from getting to Saito]].
* RomanticRunnerUp: [[spoiler:After several seasons of competition, she watches Saito marry Louise.]]
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She fell in love with Saito because he stood up for the rights of the [[{{Muggles}} people who can't use magic]].
* TaremeEyes: To highlight her gentler and more humble personality (before {{Flanderization}} set in) she has rounded eyes.
* TheTease: Her favorite seduction technique is to let, and in some cases, force Saito to touch her breasts.
* ThroughHisStomach: She resorts to the food tactic at times in her ''many'' attempts to win Saito's heart.
* TookALevelInJerkass: As the anime progresses, Siesta shows signs of enjoying Louise's constant abuse of Saito. She starts to often join Louise in beating Saito if he does something to anger her, and on more than one occasion, attempts to seduce him knowing full well that Louise will beat the living hell out of him for it. In Seasons 3 and 4, she's openly enjoying Saito getting beaten just so she'd be the one to take care of him.

The daughter of a viceroy who served under Tiffania's father the archduke, Matilda was forced to flee her home with Tiffania after King Wales murdered the rest of their families and had her home burnt to the ground. These events caused her to develop a burning hatred of nobility, and forced her into a life of crime to pay the bills. At the start of the series she is posing as a secretary at the Tristain Academy of Magic with the intent to eventually steal the Staff of Destruction (an M72 LAW) stored there.
-----
* BeleagueredAssistant: When she is Osmand's secretary, due to his status as a DirtyOldMan.
* DishingOutDirt: Her nickname is Foquet the Crumbling Dirt/Earth.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Foquet is sickened in the light novel when the mercenaries loot the dead after New Castle.
* ExtraOreDinary: Using Alchemy, her golem can turn its fist to steel.
* FreudianExcuse: Hates nobles because her father was betrayed and killed by Albion nobles.
* TheGlassesComeOff: When she reveals herself as Foquet.
* ItAmusedMe: In the light novel, she admits to stealing from nobles because she liked seeing them squirm.
* JustLikeRobinHood: A large part of her appeal is stealing from the nobles.
* OhCrap: When the Staff of Destruction is out of ammo and she gets a hilt to the stomach from Saito.
* PetTheDog: Sent money to Tiffania and the orphans in the light novel.

* IWasQuiteALooker: He was better looking as a young man.
* PlayingWithFire: Fire mage.
* ShellShockedVeteran: His reason for hating war [[spoiler:is going through one as an officer and burning a completely innocent village down when it was reported that it was contaminated by a vicious disease, which was an outright lie made by corrupt nobles, in which he '''immensely regrets''' shortly after saving poor young Agnes.]]

The well-loved Crown Princess of Tristain and Louise's old friend. She eventually ascends to Queen of Tristain. She has a strong sense of justice and strictly obeys her morals, but based on her interactions with Louise and her budding attraction for Saito, this wasn't always the case in the past. She is a Water mage.
-----
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair is described as being a chestnut brown in the novels. In the anime, her hair is a light purple and in the manga, her hair is a much darker shade of purple.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler:She makes a heartfelt cry to Prince Wales... or better said, the copy of his body, animated with a little of his soul.]]
* BattleBallgown: Her battle armor is a ballgown with the only pieces of real armor worn on the arms, legs and shoulders.
* BigBreastPride: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Unlike most of Louise's rivals, she doesn't like to brag about their size difference, but she's shown to be NotSoAboveItAll while having a {{Catfight}} over Saito while bathing, she can't help but act smug when she notices Louise [[ACupAngst staring at her chest in jealous awe]] and later calls her a "Carpenter's dream".
* BreakTheCutie: Poor [[StarCrossedLovers Henrietta and Wales...]] the tragic romance is not the only hardship she encounters.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: One episode has her [[BathtubBonding take a bath with Louise]], and when Louise sees her [[SexySurfacingShot rising out of the water]] she can't help but [[ACupAngst feel jealous]] of how much bigger Henrietta is, describing her as being "unnecessarily sexy".
* TheChainsOfCommanding: It's not easy being queen; corrupt nobles, war plans, international politics, etc. Several times these chains prevent her from helping her friends (such as Louise) because doing so would have backlash on the country as a whole.
* ChildhoodFriends: Louise was her playmate when they were both growing up. Because of this, she sees Louise more as an equal she can confide in and rely on instead of one more noble subject.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale. We're not entirely sure, but she is the witness to the OfficialCouple's wedding alongside Tabitha/Charlotte and looks genuinely happy for them.]]
* TheHighQueen: She ultimately ascends to Queen with the power and popularity to go with it.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: She's shown to resent the responsibilities of her life as a ruler and often wishes she could just be a normal girl.
* IJustWantToBeYou: She turns into Louise because of a magic mirror that temporarily turns whoever looks into it into who they most want to be.
* JerkassBall: Season 4, Episode 6 shows a meaner side of her, [[spoiler:telling Louise that she's in love with Saito and then taunting her and her poor, flat chest. Then they get into a tussle, just like they used to when they were children. By the end of the scene she's back to normal.]]
* KissingCousins: She's in a secret relationship with Prince Wales of Albion, who happens to be her cousin. [[spoiler:[[StarCrossedLovers It ends in tears...]]]]
* LordCountry: She rules over the Kingdom of Tristain and her family name is de Tristain.
* MakingASplash: She is a water mage.
* MsFanservice: In Season 2, where she has a scene in a SexySoakedShirt, and Season 4, where she appears in a sexy negligee.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Henrietta Anne, youngest daughter of King Charles I of England and sister of King Charles II.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite being in love with Saito, she remained a serious character for the longest time and didn't get into any bickering with any other girl over Saito. In the fourth season, she finally gets into a fight with Louise over Saito's affections for the first and only time.
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: She's very active politically. At one point she hires Saito and Louise to spy on a village to confirm her suspicions about corruption within the nobility, because she doesn't trust the usual sources. She was crowned and became Queen after taking command of the royal guard and leading them into battle to defend Tristain.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She doesn't throw her weight around just because she can, tries to take care of her troops in war, and will even abide by rules set by the school at a party.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She takes command of the army when needed, and even tries to stop Louise and Saito's group from rescuing Tabitha partly out of her concern for their safety, and partly because she doesn't want to provoke another war by making it seem like she approved of their invasion into another country to rescue her.
* ShipTease: Constantly with Saito and it escalates in Season 4, where she isn't afraid of telling [[spoiler:to Louise's face that she loves him.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: With Prince Wales, her first cousin. Politics prevent them from being together officially, so they have covert meetings.
* TaremeEyes: Fitting her role as a benevolent monarch, she has rounded eyes.
* ThirdOptionLoveInterest: While Saito gets a lot of ShipTease with most of the main female cast, Henrietta gets the most focus behind Louise and Siesta.
* ToughLeaderFacade: The position of Queen demands a confident, competent, and most of all ''spotless'' image, and so Henrietta has to maintain this image for the public. She takes solace in her friendship with Louise, when no one can see her.

Captain of Tristain's Royal Musketeers in service of Henrietta. She is introduced in the second season. She holds a strong animosity towards Fire mages because of her past. Since she appears stern and uninterested in men, many people think or assume that she is a lesbian.
-----
* AmbiguouslyLesbian: She has no qualms silencing Louise by ''[[ShutUpKiss kissing her]]'' when the latter gasps while eavesdropping on a pair of conspirators. She's only visibly mortified in the anime. In the novel she shrugged it off as no big deal and later had a big laugh about it at Louse's expense.
* AndThenWhat: Colbert tries this tactic to talk her out of revenge but she brushes it off with ease. Once she acomplishes her revenge, she's going to fight for her queen until she dies.
* BadassNormal: In a world filled with mages, she holds her own with a pistol and a saber.
* BoyishShortHair: Sidetail variant, to better contrast the fashion of noblewomen.
* BystanderSyndrome: Even if Saito approaches her to save him from another misunderstanding-fueled temper tantrum by Louise, she does nothing to help him.
* CelibateHeroine: She has no interest in romance, be it with Saito, any other man, or any woman.
* DemotedToExtra:
** Doesn't have much role in Season 3 other than being Henrietta's bodyguard. Her biggest scene is [[spoiler:when she finds out that Colbert is still alive. She spares him in the end, out of the fear that his students will hate her.]]
** She has even ''smaller'' role in Season 4. ''All'' of her scenes last around 5 to 30 seconds and she doesn't speak in some of them.

* FakeOutMakeOut: With [[spoiler:Louise]] during a spying mission.
* {{Revenge}}: [[spoiler:Her motivation -- her native D'Angleterre was set ablaze by a group of Fire Mages, supposedly to contain an epidemic. 632* OutOfTheInferno: Done awesomely, but not in the [[UnflinchingWalk usual way]]; as Lishman is savoring his victory, Agnes [[DynamicEntry leaps out of the flames and skewers him]].
* MugglePower: Believes herself to be superior to mages in combat because she can fire her gun faster than they can cast a spell. [[spoiler:When she encounters the lieutenant fire mage that burned her village, she is overwhelmed.]]
* SergeantRock: When training the academy mages she is tough and strict and does not tolerate back talk or any other kind of resistance.
* SwordAndGun: She prefers a pair of pistols and a longsword.
* TokenWholesome: She's the complete contrast of most of the fanservice-laden girls in the series, despite having a decently-sized bust, a different variation of ZettaiRyouiki, [[spoiler:and her FakeOutMakeOut moment with Louise]]. It is a perfect contrast to her [[TomboyAndGirlyGirl Girly Girl]] partner, Princess Henrietta, who is, like several other major female characters in the series, a MsFanservice.
* TsurimeEyes: There is no softness in her; her personality is as sharp as her eyes.

* TheMole: [[spoiler:Secretly a member of Reconquista.]]
* ScarsAreForever: He ain't getting that arm back. It's his shoulder that gets wounded in the anime and his arm is bandaged so it wouldn't look too violent.
* SelfDuplication: He can create copies of himself with wind.

The mother of Louise, Eleanor and Cattleya. She was the strongest Wind magic-user ever to serve in the Tristain military according to records.
-----
* ActionMom: As a mage with far more experience than any student at the academy, she is powerful. Not living up to her legacy is part of Louise's angst.
* TheArchmage: She's believed to be the strongest human mage in the setting.
* BlowYouAway: A square-class wind mage.
* ClassyCravat: She's a Duchess wearing a cravat.
* CoolMask: She wore an iron mask during her time as Heavy Wind.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her hair and eyes are both pink.
* TheDreaded: Louise was much more frightened of her mother than the Queen's punishment.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: She had her own adventures when she was Louise's age. Her past is elaborated in two spin-off novels.
* LadyOfWar: She's an elegant noblewoman who also happened to be a very powerful knight in the past.
* PrimAndProperBun: Part of her hair is tucked away and pinned behind her head. Oddly enough, she has two free tails down the front.
* PsychoPink: She's a cold and dreaded woman with pink hair.
* RedBaron: She is also known by her nickname "Heavy Wind".
* RetiredBadass: She's the former Commander of the Manticore Corps. Currently, she has retired and lives as a regular noblewoman with her family.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: While not apparent in the series proper, she looked almost exactly like her daughter Louise when she was younger.
* SweetPollyOliver: During her time as Commander, she hid her gender. Considering she favored hot pants and thigh high boots when she was younger, it's unknown how she pulled this off.
* {{Tsundere}}: Not apparent in the present day, but she had a bit of a propensity to blow up at her future husband when he angered her, not unlike her youngest daughter does with hers.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp and stern-looking eyes match her harsh demeanor. She passed it on to her eldest daughter. In the past, her eyes were more like Louise's.

[[folder:Cattleya]]
!!Cattleya de la Fontaine
!!!'''Voiced by''': Kotomi Yamakawa (JP)
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cattleya_la_valliere.jpg]]

Cattleya is Louise's second sister. She believes Louise has potential, and that she is a wonderful girl. More than anything, she longs for Louise's happiness and is fine with the fact that Louise has feelings for a peasant. She is a kindhearted person and helps Louise escape from her house to go back to the Academy. She knows Louise well, and can easily tell that Louise is in love with Saito, even when Louise denies it. Although Cattleya is older than Louise, she isn't married due to the fact she is ill. Cattleya is an Earth mage.
-----
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has the biggest breasts out of the women in her family, much to her flat-chested sisters' envy. Her ample chest is one of the reasons why Louise's ideal self is modeled after Cattleya.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Both her hair and eyes are pink.
* DishingOutDirt: She's an Earth mage.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: She has a lot of pets. The light novels and the anime imply that her bedroom looks like a zoo.
* HealItWithWater: While she's primarily an earth mage, she does show some affinity for healing spells using water.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: She has some disease that makes her cough, that is about it.
* KnightTemplarBigSister: Though lesser than Eleanor's, she is definitely this. Her character song with Cattleya and Louise (Nemurenai Fantasy) shows this, along with hints of her approval of Louise and Saito's relationship.
* NiceGirl: Her kindheart, patience and tolerance is highlighted next to her [[HairTriggerTemper short-tempered]] sister and her cold-hearted mother.
* OddNameOut: Despite being born of Duke and Duchess de la Vaillere, she was given the surname of Fontaine due to her IncurableCoughOfDeath.
* OneeSama: Her younger sister Louise idolizes her.
* OverlyLongName: Cattleya Yvette La Baume Le Blanc de La Fontaine.
* RoseHairedSweetie: She has pink hair, like her mother and younger sister. Unlike them, Cattleya is very kind and sweet.
* ShipperOnDeck: She's the only one in the family who supports Louise's relationship with Saito.
* SiblingYinYang: With Eleanore. Cattleya is the soft and sweet sister in contrast to the the angry and harsh Eleanore.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks nearly identical to her mother and her youngest sister, but with bigger boobs.
[[/folder]]

!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/KikukoInoue (JP)
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eleonore_la_valliere.jpg]]

Eleanore is Louise's eldest sister and is currently working as head researcher in the Tristainian magic research organisation simply known as the "Academy". She resembles her father more than her mother. Eleanor brought Louise out of the magic academy, intending to find her a noble husband. It should be her turn to get married instead of Louise, and she had gotten engaged to the Earl of Burgundy, though he called off the marriage. Like most the rest of Louise's family, except for Cattleya, she believes that Louise is incapable of performing magic, and that she is a zero.
-----
* ACupAngst: Similar to Louise, she dislikes being flatter than Cattleya.
* BerserkButton: Being reminded about her failed engagement makes her even harsher than normal.
* BigSisterBully: She bullies her youngest sister Louise; ordering her around, pinching her cheek until she's addressed as "Onee-sama", dragging her out of the academy, etc.
* HairTriggerTemper: Similarly to her youngest sister, it's easy to set her off.
* KnightTemplarBigSister: She's willing to lock Louise up so she wouldn't go to war. Her character song with Cattleya and Louise (Nemurenai Fantasy) shows this, along with hints of her secret approval of Louise and Saito's relationship.
* OneeSama: Louise calls her this out of fear/protocol instead of adoration like Cattleya.
* OverlyLongName: Eleanore Albertine Le Blanc De La Blois De La Vallière.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: When she gets mad, her glasses do this.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: She and her youngest sister Louise have the same short fuse and [[ACupAngst insecurity about being flat-chested]].
* SiblingYinYang: With Cattleya. Eleanore is the angry and harsh sister in contrast to the soft and sweet Cattleya.
* {{Tsundere}}: Even ''worse'' than Louise and a deconstruction. Internally she gushes about the Earl of Burgundy but he never saw her feelings for him. He genuinely thought she hated him and called off their engagement to avoid marrying a woman who he thought despised him.
* TsurimeEyes: Like her mother, she has the pointed eye shape and inherited her harsh personality as well.
* WhipOfDominance: She's a strict and bossy woman and just her younger sister, she carries a whip for "disciplinary" reasons. She ends up whipping [[ButtMonkey Saito]] when he does things like (accidentally) going into her room or staring at her chest.

[[folder:Joseph]]
!!King Joseph de Gallia
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/JurotaKosugi (JP)
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joseph_gaul_anime.png]]

Joseph is the King of Gallia, a Void Mage and has the "Mind of God" Sheffield as his familiar. Outwardly he plays the facade of being just a pretty boy that cannot rule his country if his life depended on it, while in reality he is a ruthless politician and schemer. There was no act he would hesitate to do, or anything he was not willing to sacrifice due to the 'Void' in his heart. He is the uncle of Tabitha.
-----
* AbusiveDad: He treats his daughter, Isabella, like dirt, always sending her away in disgust, purely because she reminds him too much of himself.
* BigBad: The franchise's main antagonist and the primary cause of the series' conflicts. He is responsible for the murder of his younger brother Charles and usurping his throne and attempting to poison his niece to insanity, which was halted [[TakingTheBullet because of her mother's intervention]]. Joseph is responsible for kickstarting Tabitha's escape to Tristain, attempting to use her as an agent and even force her to betray her TrueCompanions and sentence her to death if she failed. To a much wider extent, Joseph is responsible for the the rise of Reconquista in the shadows by helping them and its [[spoiler:true leader and his familiar Sheffield]] to incite wars against Tristain for his plans of [[spoiler:locating the other Void mages]], thereby making him the series' true mastermind. [[spoiler:After his death, the Ancient Dragon later takes his position.]]
* BloodKnight: His quest is to feel emotion due to the Void within his heart, but his methods are ruthless and bloody, even starting countless wars to other neighbouring countries just to achieve his twisted goal to the end.
* BlueIsHeroic: [[InvertedTrope A complete inversion.]] His bright blue eyes and light blue hair often complements with his detached and cruel personality. And being the BigBad of the series.
* CainAndAbel: Evil older brother, check. Murdered younger brother, check again.
* TheCaligula: As the king of Gaul, he ticks off most of the checklist. The only reason he doesn't fully fit the trope is that he is completely incapable of anger, but he goes out of his way to trigger wars, purely so he can laugh as the world burns around him.
* TheChessmaster: Has a literal magical [[ChessMotifs chessboard]] to complement his EvilPlan.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Despite being the utmost threat to the heroes across the entire franchise, his death in Season 4, Episode 3 only ends his own villain arc, as the heroes have to face the final BigBad, the Ancient Dragon, who would later take his position near the end of the series.]]
* EvilOverlord: After forcibly murdering his brother, Joseph becomes the de facto King of Gallia. He is a cruel ruler where he is willing to secretly further the Reconquista to stoke wars with Tristain and its allies including Romalia and Germania just to use it for his twisted motivations to feel any remorse.
* EvilUncle: While he isn't the main character's uncle he ''is'' an uncle to Tabitha. He is pretty evil too.
* FlashStep: Acceleration/Haste enables him to keep up with the Gandalfr's speed.
* GreenEyedMonster: The reason he hated his little brother is jealousy.
* InverseLawOfSharpnessAndAccuracy: His Explosion spell is less powerful than Louise's but is more accurate so he can aim it at a designated target, unlike hers which is more of an AreaOfEffect spell.
* LackOfEmpathy: Seems to have no issues killing his brother, then attempting to poison his niece, and later killing not only Romalia's men, but his own as well in an attempt to feel some kind of emotion. [[spoiler:Season 4 implies that Joseph's actions were attempts to make himself feel regret for killing his younger brother, but in a twisted way.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Keeps up a public persona of a weak and useless man.
* OmnicidalManiac: He wants to kill ''everybody''. Purely for the sake of trying to feel something, anything, even if it's merely the sadistic pleasure of watching others wallow in the despair he caused.
* PowerCopying: He can absorb the abilities of other Void Mages through his familiar, "the Mind of God".
* PowerOfTheVoid: One of the four void mages.
* TheSociopath: The man is incapable of feeling ''anything'', so he always relishes the suffering of others, especially at his own hands. In fact, the quickest way you can find yourself at the point of his dagger is to say you love him. If he spends any effort on anything, it's purely so he can come back and destroy it later, and enjoy watching it burn. F's third episode's climax somewhat [[SubvertedTrope subverts]] this trope, as shown that he expressed signs of genuine affection to Sheffield [[spoiler:before he died at the exploding ship with her.]] However the end result is ambiguous.
* StuffBlowingUp: Explosion, though his Void specialty is actually [[TeleportSpam Acceleration]]/ Haste and not Explosion.
* SuperSpeed: His specialty is 'Acceleration'; speeding up his movements.
* VillainHasAPoint: He's right to give his elf "ally," Bidashal, a good BreakingSpeech. The pompous, self-righteous, arrogant twit has done a great many nasty things in the service of Joseph Gaul, never hesitating or questioning Joseph's goals and intentions, until after his appointed task is done and only then expressing outrage, calling Joseph a "demon," while completely neglecting everything he's done not only to enable Joseph's evil deeds, but all the blood on his own hands.

[[folder:Charles]]
!!Duke Charles de Orléans
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duke_dorleans.png]]
Joseph's younger brother and the father of Tabitha/Charlotte.
----
* BenevolentMageRuler: Charles was the more benevolent ruler of Gallia in his short-lived term as the King. He is a stark contrast to his older brother Joseph who largely served as an EvilOverlord after he murdered him with a poison arrow and subsequently usurped his position. He is also a more competent mage than his older brother Joseph, which also increased his brother's [[GreenEyedMonster seething envy and hatred towards him]], ultimately leading to his demise.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: While a largely flashback character, Charles' death became the centerpiece of Tabitha's exile to Tristain, her emotionless personality in the present and Joseph's rise to being an OmnicidalManiac.
* WalkingSpoiler: Any mention of Charles is impossible without spoiling the majority of the series' plot.

Tabitha/Charlotte's mother and the Duchess of Orléans.
----
* DrivenToMadness: After taking the potion that was meant for Tabitha/Charlotte, which was perpetrated by Joseph, she became insane and maddened who sees Charlotte's doll Tabitha as her "daughter". [[spoiler:No longer in effect after she was cured.]]
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In her last appearance in F, she is seen wearing her hair in a bun [[spoiler:after she was cured.]]
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler:Only during her time when she was insane.]] She perceives the doll, Tabitha, as her daughter and her actual daughter as nothing more than a "traitor" to her family.
* SurrogateSoliloquy: During her induced madness caused by Joseph [[spoiler:she is seen talking to Tabitha, Charlotte's doll, and mistakes her as the doll as her ''real'' daughter.]] When the ''actual'' Tabitha/Charlotte shows up, however, she quickly loses it and calls her a "traitor" trying to "split" her family apart.
* TakingTheBullet: A non-lethal variant, where she saves Charlotte from the potion Joseph created for her by drinking it. At the direct expense of her being driven to insanity in Tabitha/Charlotte's stead.
* UnnamedParent: Her first name isn't mentioned. She's either known as "Duchess de Orléans" or "Tabitha/Charlotte's mother".

[[folder:Isabella]]
!!Isabella de Gallia
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/isabella_ln.jpg]]
A light novel-exclusive character. She is the princess of Gallia and the only daughter of the late Joseph and his unnamed wife.
----
* AdaptedOut: Isabella only exists in the Light Novels, being excluded from the anime adaptation.
* ClashingCousins: Isabella initially acted antagonistic and cold towards Tabitha, her younger cousin, due to her father's death at the hands of her, Louise and Saito. But she subverts this trope when she saw Tabitha's mother for the first time, seeing the error of her ways.
* DaddysLittleVillain: She is the daughter of [[EvilOverlord Joseph]] and has a very nasty personality.
* HeelRealization: She goes into this when she meets Tabitha's mother for the first time, realising that she, Tabitha and [[spoiler:Josette]] are the only family left, causing her to have a change of heart. This led her to [[{{Forgiveness}} bury the hatchet]] with Tabitha and subsequently become a nun to make it up for the lengthy atrocities her father committed over the course of many years.
* RoyalBrat: Being raised by Joseph, Isabella did not hesitate to scorn the newly-crowned Queen Tabitha/Charlotte, blaming her for the death of her equally abusive father.
* SinsOfOurFathers: After realising the errors of her father's ways and her own ways, Isabella takes up the job of a nun.
* TakingTheVeil: She becomes a nun, in order to compensate for her father's sins and crimes he committed in his terror.
* TrueBlueFemininity: A [[SubvertedTrope subversion.]] She's a princess with blue eyes and light blue hair, as well as blue-coloured clothing. However, she's too much of a RoyalBrat to be a proper example.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes fit with her cold and rude personality.

The long-lost identical twin sister of Tabitha, who is revealed to be working at the church in Romalia. Like Tabitha, she later becomes Gallia's queen alongside her twin sister.
----
* AdaptedOut: Similarly to Isabella, Josette only appears in the Light Novels and doesn't appear in the anime series.
* AlwaysIdenticalTwins: She virtually has the same appearance as her twin sister Tabitha. It is the reason why she was once used by Vittorio and Julio to take the throne of Gallia from Tabitha in the past.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: She is ''very'' similar to her older twin Tabitha, in terms of appearance and personality. The only difference is her occupation as a nun and her outfit.
* PassingTheTorch: After Joseph's death, she later becomes the new Void mage and Julio's new master, who is now the new '''Mjöðvitnir'''.
* SeparatedAtBirth: She was separated from her twin sister during her childhood when she was taken by the Papacy of Romalia under Vittorio and Julio's orders to impersonate her twin and usurp the Gallian throne from her.

* TheDragon: She served as Cromwell's secretary, before [[TheStarscream she betrays him]] by killing him inside his prison cell. After she reveals to be [[spoiler:Joseph's familiar, she is his loyal right-hand.]]
* TheHeavy: Sheffield is the most prominent antagonist in the series due to her screentime, as well as the most prominent threat that Louise and Saito faces. However, she often answers to the franchise's BigBad, [[spoiler:her master Joseph.]]
* MagicKnight: Her powers as Joseph's familiar gives her the ability to use any magical artifacts, allowing her to learn anything and everything about magic theory.
* TheManBehindTheMan: While Cromwell is purportedly the leader of Reconquista, [[spoiler:she is later revealed to be its true leader and does so by killing him.]]
* ManipulativeBitch: She murders Cromwell and uses the Ring of Andavari to continue the war between Albion and Tristain. She then uses a poison to South Gotha's water supply to brainwash its residents, so she would use it as an opportunity to ignite an insurrection against Henrietta and Tristain.
* RedBaron: '''Mjöðvitnir''', lit. "The Brain of God".
* TheStarscream: She sees Cromwell as [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness no longer useful]], after his failed attack in Tristain that led to his imprisonment, before deciding to take the Ring of Andavari and reveal herself as Reconquista's true leader.
* UndyingLoyalty: She serves as the most loyal confidante to Joseph, due to her status as [[spoiler:his familiar]], and more so upon her and his death at his ship during the climatic battle with Louise, Tiffania and Saito. 909!!The Ancient Dragon
[[quoteright:900:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ancient_dragon.png]]

An ancient, powerful dragon that originally terrorized the Romalian city of Aquileia, before setting its new goal to target Tristain, specifically Louise and Tiffania due to their Void status.
----
* AchillesHeel: While the dragon is largely immune to ''all'' magical attacks, powerful modern weapons including the [=F-2A=] Jet Fighter's missiles is enough to cause significant damage in its thick hide, revealing its molten body.
* ArchNemesis: It serves as the nemesis of the Void Mages. They serve as its major weakness when it was killed by Louise through her imbued Explosion spell when Saito gave all of his Lífþrasir powers to her. Conversely, they also serve as its major source of strength, as in the case when it fully evolves into a winged nightmare after devouring Vittorio, a Void mage. Henceforth the primary reason why it goes after Void users.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: If sufficient damage is done to its hide, the molten body is its weakness and a lot of magical power is needed to kill it. As in the case when Louise fires her Lífþrasir-powered explosion onto the exposed body, permanently defeating it for good.
* BigBad: Serving as one in F's Episodes 10 to 12 and the main antagonist after Joseph's death.
* DarkIsEvil: It's a giant black dragon with the only purpose is being a force of evil and destruction.
* DragonsAreDemonic: All the Dragon wants is to destroy anything and cause as much damage as it can regardless of lives, albeit its more specific targets are Void users including Louise and Tiffania, but anything else it causes damage is within collateral level at its worst. It is previously one of the reasons why Aquileia was targetted by the Dragon due to Vittorio, another Void user who was soon devoured by it.
* TheDreaded: The Ancient Dragon is feared by everyone who are unfortunate to encounter it. It is capable of even overpowering and devouring Vittorio, one of Romalia's most powerful mages, as well as destroying Derflinger without any hitch. Void mages including Louise and Tiffania also fear the mythical being and are definitely not safe from its wrath, as both of them turned out to be the dragon's main targets who target Void magic users.
* FinalBoss: Traditionally the final main antagonist of the entire franchise the main characters faced and is considerably a more powerful threat to boot than any other villain in the series as a whole.
* MightyGlacier: The Ancient Dragon is considered strong and powerful to everyone, but is considered slow. Doesn't mean it can't pack a dangerous punch.
* MindControl: Its ability, Miasma, allows it to control other dragons, but it cannot control dragons like Sylphid or Julio's dragon. However, the third eye it has ''can'' bypass those measures, allowing it to control Julio's dragon with ease and lure towards it.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Ancient Dragon, just by ''its name'', is a force too powerful to be reckoned with. Any magician coming in close contact with it are in for a certain doom, as in the case when it brainwashed Julio's dragon and attempted to kill Julio by luring it, but only Vittorio's HeroicSacrifice saved him from its proverbial jaws of death.
* OmnicidalManiac: It is responsible for destroying the city of Aquileia and the countless deaths of the city's people and even obliterating the fleet stationed in Magic Academy before initiating its rampage for one last time.
* OneWingedAngel: After its supposed "defeat", the Dragon then harkens its awakening as it evolves into a new form with wings, giving newfound abilities including flight, which happened after devouring Vittorio from the previous episode.
