A former Alliance Marine and adopted brother to Shirley. [[KnightTemplarBigBrother He is hell-bent on protecting her from anything and everything]]. At first he is only concerned with matters that directly affect either himself or Shirley, but slowly begins to open up as he becomes friends with the inhabitants of the ''Legacy''. He uses [[HeroesFightBarehanded his fists]] in battle, the first ''VideoGame/TalesSeries'' main character to not [[HeroesPreferSwords use swords]], and uses some traditional ''VideoGame/TalesSeries'' [[TheHero hero artes]] mixed with his own.
----
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:He's really a former soldier of Vaclav's, but chose to stay in the village he was ordered to attack because he preferred the peaceful life. When Senel didn't complete his mission, the town was razed anyways. Senel never truly forgives himself for that.]]
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:He was originally a soldier from Crusand sent to plan an attack on the Ferines settlement so Shirley could be captured and used as a weapon. He eventually assimilated into the Ferines village, to the point where he and Stella were talking about getting married. Then bad things happened.]]
* BerserkButton: Anything having to do with Stella.
* BigBrotherInstinct: [[DeconReconSwitch Deconstructed then reconstructed through the main story]]. Played straight in the Character Quests where he's the "Responsible Elder Sibling" of the group, and usually the one to take charge whenever Will's not around.
* BystanderSyndrome: Early-on, if it doesn't involve himself or Shirley, he doesn't care. He gets heavily called out on this, and eventually gets better.
* CharacterDevelopment: His development is the most noticeable one. He goes from a cold and hot-blooded young boy who only thought of Stella, Shirley and himself to a level-headed young man who thinks of everyone and smiles more often.
* ChasteHero: Shirley and Chloe both have crushes on him, though [[spoiler:the only girl he was ever romantically interested in was Stella, who is dead.]] Stealthily downplayed at the beginning of Will's quest, which contains an oblique reference that maybe he's not so chaste after all.
* ChewingTheScenery: "STELLA, NOOOOOOOOOO!"
* ChildSoldier: He was a war orphan [[spoiler:trained by Vaclav to sneak into the Ferines village and kidnap Shirley. But he grew too attached to the peace in the village and eventually forgot about his mission.]]
* DefrostingIceKing: Starts the game as a rather prickly individual, and it becomes apparent that Senel has trust issues. He grows out of this by the end of the main story.
* DemotedToExtra: In most of the escort games where he isn't one of the main characters, he is usually take a role of "a guy who own a boat" where the others characters tend to ask him for his service.
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler:He's the only one who doesn't lapse into a HeroicBSOD after Maurits's BreakingSpeech.]]
* FacialMarkings: In ''Radiant Mythology'', [[VideoGame/TalesOfRebirth Annie]] starts talking about his "scar" and how it must've hurt. Senel admits that it's a tattoo and he just got it because he thought it'd look cool. [[http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/4936/marinetrooper.jpg It's the symbol of the marine troopers.]]
* GoingNative: He went from being [[spoiler:a soldier of the mainland]] to a man living a peaceful life in a fishing village.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: The first main character in a ''Tales'' game to only use his fists.
* HeavySleeper: Exaggerated. A running gag in the Character Quests features every party member save Senel himself trying to wake him up. Will resorts to kicking Senel in the head, to no avail.
** Later on, an earthquake knocks Senel off his bed on the second floor all the way down to the first floor. ''He still didn't wake up.''
* HeroesFightBarehanded: As noted above, he is the first main character not to use a sword in the ''VideoGame/TalesSeries''.
* HeroicBSOD: Gets one of these after [[spoiler:the Calm Nerifes refused to grant him sacred eres, when it gave sacred eres to everyone else. He had to do some soul searching to realize just [[TheAtoner what he'd done]] to Shirley before he finally got it.]] This is inverted later, when [[spoiler:Maurits is giving a BreakingSpeech to the rest of the party during the final battle. Senel is the only one who does ''not'' go into this.]]
* HotBlooded: In battle, at least. He's pretty distant outside of it.
* IsThatCuteKidYours: At the start of Will's quest, when he, Shirley, and Harriet are trying to get everyone together to find the abandoned baby's parents. When he first sees Shirley with the baby, though, his reaction is more along the lines of {{Is That Cute Kid|Yours}} ''[[IsThatCuteKidYours Ours?]]''.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He starts out a JerkAss but he genuinely does care about Shirley's well-being. Eventually, he loses the "Jerk" part.
* LightningBruiser: In combat he is very strong, fast, and has the highest HP aside from Moses.
* MistakenForCheating: Very briefly in the Character Quests, during the scene where Grune tries to wake him up, fails, and decides to take a nap in his bed instead, with Senel sleeping on the floor. Shirley is ''not pleased'' for all of half a minute until the situation clarifies itself.
* TheMourningAfter: He rejects Shirley confessesion, stating that he's still loyal to Stella. This is what pushes Shirley towards becoming the Merines.
* MyFistForgivesYou: When Moses asks to join the group to help rescue Shirley, Senel responds with a beating, pointing out that he was the one who kidnapped Shirley in the first place.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Senel is named after Cuban writer Senel Paz.
* NotBloodSiblings: He and Shirley claim to be brother and sister, but they're not actually related.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Ends up in this position when Shirley walks in on him and Grune supposedly in bed together. Grune came to wake him up and decided to sleep in his bed in retaliation for not waking up. [[note]] Senel was asleep on the floor due to an earthquake. [[/note]]
* ObliviousToLove: Subverted. It looks like Senel has absolutely no clue about Shirley's love for him, but not only does he know, he intentionally tries to avoid the subject. [[spoiler:When Shirley directly confesses, Senel says that he has to stay with Stella, who's already dead.]]
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: He starts the Character Quests bunking in Will's house where his preferred sleeping spot was on the floor behind the sofa.
* PlayingWithFire: His only elemental artes are Fire-based.
* PowerFist: [[spoiler:Interestingly, it is very similar to that of his [[EvilMentor mentor]], Vaclav.]]
* RefusedByTheCall: He's not granted the power of the Quiet Nerifes due to his guilt of being an eren, seeing it as [[ChildSoldier the cause]] of what happened to Shirley, Stella, and the Ferines in the village.
* SayMyName: '''STELLAAAAAAAAAAA!'''/'''SUTERAAAAAAAAA!'''
* ShoutOut: If you thought [[Anime/FinalFantasyUnlimited Makenshi]] when you saw him, you might not be alone.
* SingleTargetSexuality: It’s shown that he only has eyes for Shirley’s sister, Stella. Even after the later dies, and Shirley confesses, he still resigns himself to stay loyal to Stella.
* SuperSwimmingSkills: He's an ''excellent'' swimmer, as would be expected of an Alliance Marine [[spoiler:though his skill in the water comes from his years living among the Ferines.]]
* SupremeChef: In baking. In his appearances in spin-off games, such as Radiant Mythology, he is always seen to be baking bread. He seems to be very good at baking as many characters enjoy his bread. It is unknown if other Legendia characters make bread in spin-off games, but he is shown to be the constant baker.
* UnreliableNarrator: Senel views Stella as a pure and flawless person, overlooking a good deal of her negative traits because he was madly in love with her.
* WhatTheHellHero: Chloe yells at Senel, coupled slightly with GetAholdOfYourselfMan, after he [[spoiler:rejects Shirley just because Senel wants to stay loyal to Stella, even though she's dead.]]

!!! '''Voiced by:''' Creator/RyoHirohashi (JP), Creator/CarrieSavage (EN)
[[quoteright:185:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Shirley185_8249.jpg]]

An innocent young girl who travels alongside Senel, her adopted brother. She suffers from a rare condition that leaves her severely weakened if she becomes submerged in sea water. Though she harbors romantic feelings for Senel, she does not say anything because he is in love with her sister, Stella Telmes.
----
* ACupAngst: Like Norma, she’s not too fond her current figure and wished that she had a body like Chloe’s. She even earns a title reflecting this.
* AntiAntiChrist: Double subverted. [[spoiler:She is the savior of the Ferines, who will flood the world and eradicate the humans. She didn't want to do this pre-series but a significant amount of tragedy convinced her otherwise, temporarily.]]
* ApocalypseMaiden: [[spoiler:The Merines' duty is to activate the Wings of Light, a cataclysmic superweapon that will flood the planet and kill all the humans so that the Ferines can prosper again.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Her reaction to Norma trying to sleep over at Senel's place is to [[DissonantSerenity smile sweetly]] and start charging her Eres.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: By the [[spoiler:spirit of the entire ''ocean''.]]
* BreakTheCutie: Stupid Vaclav... [[spoiler:Although it's Maurits and the Gadoria Knight Captain who push her over the edge.]]
* BrokenSmile: PlayedForLaughs. Her reaction towards Norma’s attempt at staying over at Senel’s place. It scares Norma into thinking that she might turn back into the Merines.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Prior to the game [[spoiler: when Shirley purposefully failed the Rite of Accession, she lost all of her abilities to use Eres.]]
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: When she finally joins and becomes playable, her spells that are shared with everyone else have a pink variant to their animations. [[spoiler:Her Orerines clothing, that she wears for most of the main quest and the entirety of the character quests, is mostly white. Her Merines dress, on the other hand, is black and dark blue.]]
* CompetingWithACorpse: She loves Senel, but Senel is still carrying a torch for Stella. [[spoiler:Senel's rejection of Shirley's love is part of what pushes her over the edge to become the Merines.]]
* CrucifiedHeroShot: Briefly, when Maurits attacks the party after [[spoiler:failing to completely absorb Nerifes' power]].
* CrystalDragonJesus: To whatever religion the Orerines practice.
* DamselInDistress: Until she unlocks her Merines powers she spends the vast majority of the time being kidnapped.
* DamselOutOfDistress:
** On one occasion in the main story, she broke her bounds, punched out a soldier and then escaped on her own. The only reason she was recaptured is because she used herself as bait to help another Ferines escape.
** In Jay's Quest, where Jay has to kidnap her, and she ends up [[GetAholdOfYourselfMan verbally bitch-slapping him to his senses.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: When [[spoiler:Fenimore dies.]] And then [[spoiler:''again'' when Maurits tricks her into believing Senel never cared for her.]]
* EvilCostumeSwitch: [[spoiler:Her costume as the Merines after the Rite of Accession is nearly pitch black.]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: [[spoiler:After she completes the Rite of Accession and awakens as the Merines, her voice is noticeably deeper and no longer squeaky.]]
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: To [[spoiler:Chloe and then Jay]] in the character quests.
* {{Honorifics}}: Once the Character Quests roll around, Shirley is the only member of the main party who still uses them. At the end of Chloe's quest, it's Chloe herself who convinces Shirley not to be so formal with everyone else (though she's still embarrassed when Shirley drops the suffixes completely). Norma has a similar scene with her near the end of Moses' quest.
* IAmWho: [[spoiler:She is actually a Ferines, a {{Precursor}} race of highly-advanced, water-dwelling humanoids. Not only that, she is a candidate to become the Merines, the chosen one of the Ferines race who has the ability to control the ''Legacy'' and [[{{Technopath}} all of its Ferines-built technology at will]]. However, the true purpose of the Merines is to activate the Wings of Light, a [[WeaponOfMassDestruction cataclysmic superweapon]] aboard the ''Legacy'' that would flood the planet and allow the Ferines to prosper once more]].
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Shirley loves Senel, but Senel loves her older sister Stella... Shirley puts up with it for a long time because she wants Senel to be happy, but eventually [[BrainwashedAndCrazy she]] [[{{Yandere}} loses it...]]
** Later in the character quests, [[spoiler:she's on the verge of stepping aside ''again''--for Chloe this time--despite being engaged to Senel. At least before she and Chloe air out their feelings and Chloe admits that she's never going to get anywhere with him and knows it.]]
** There's another scene in the character quests where this happens and is PlayedForLaughs. Shirley mistakenly believes Senel has slept with Grune and, while sad, resigns herself to this fact and tries not to burden Senel with her feelings on it. When it becomes clear that this whole thing is a misunderstanding, Shirley has a FreakOut in both frusturation and relief.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Though she specializes in magic, her equippable weapon is a pen. However, but the weapons she ''attacks'' with is throwing butterfly-shaped Teriques.
* IsThatCuteKidYours: Goes through this twice in Will's quest; see Senel's profile for details.
* TheLoad : During the first act of the game because of her weak constitution and vulnerability to sea water [[spoiler:both of which are due to a curse from Nerifes because she deliberately failed her ascension.]]
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Senel and Stella tried to keep [[spoiler:Senel's past as a child soldier]] from her. When she learns the truth, she's ''much'' more upset about not being trusted and included than she is about what she's being told.
* LoveMartyr: [[spoiler:Senel rejecting her love is what pushes her to embrace the Rite of Accession, the true purpose of which she unfortunately doesn't remember until it's too late.]]
* MoreHeroThanThou: During the whole Waterways incident. Shirley was rescuing herself quite capably in all the confusion up until Fenimore and Walter caught the DistressBall; Shirley, not seeing herself as more important than them, lets herself get captured again in order to distract Vaclav from the two of them.
* MoreThanMindControl: Even after being brainwashed, Shirley still possess free will, which almost leads her to breaking free, [[spoiler:but Maurits puts a stop to that and persuades her into giving in completely.]]
* NotBloodSiblings: Senel isn't really her brother.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: [[spoiler:After she awakens her Merines powers, she's capable of wiping out the planet in a gigantic flood if she wants to. At the cost of her life, but still. She can also cause lots of other lesser chaos and destruction with no risk to herself. ''Damn.'']]
* PluckyGirl: She will put up with ''a lot'' and keep on going.
* ThePollyanna: She often tries to be, but ultimately [[DespairEventHorizon she fails.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to her sister's red.
* RomanticRunnerUp: [[spoiler:She lost to Stella initially but [[AnchoredShip won in the end]].]]
* ShoutOutThemeNaming: She is named after the 1849 novel ''[[Literature/{{Shirley}} Shirley]]'' by English author, Creator/CharlotteBronte.
* SilkHidingSteel: Especially in the Character Quests.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:Shirley steps in front of a Ferines woman who was about to be stabbed by the captain of the Gadorian Knights. Fenimore then steps in front of Shirley, TakingTheBullet for the one who was going to [[TakingTheBullet Take The Bullet]]]].
* UnstablePoweredWoman: She's a Ferines — a race of aquatic people that have been at odds with humanity for centuries. Even more than that, she is the Merines, who has the ability to hear the voice of the Ferines' god and let him act through her. Later in the story, a group of antagonistic Ferines perform a ritual that revives the god in Shirley in the hopes that said god will wage war against humanity. Their plan nearly succeeds because around the same time, Shirley confesses her feelings to the protagonist Senel, who rejects her because he is still in love with her deceased older sister. After she runs away, her only remaining friend, Fenimore, is then killed by an army of attacking humans. These events push Shirley over the edge and make her much more susceptible to the god's influence, as her pain and rage is amplified. She spends the next portion of the game being one of the major antagonists, encouraged by the priest who had been plotting this all along.
* WingedHumanoid: Ferines can produce a "teriques," that typically manifests as a pair of wings, either back-mounted or free and butterfly sized. After Shirely unlocks her Merines powers, her teriques becomes permanently active, as back-mounted wings.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:It's hard not to feel bad for the poor girl. First, the man she's in love with rejects her advances for her sister, ''who is dead at the time'', and then watches her new friend die to trigger her into accepting the rite. Then she learns that same man she loves was likely the cause of the misery in her life starting in the first place, and that he never once entrusted her with that information. No wonder she goes so far off the deep end.]]
* {{Yandere}}: After [[BreakTheCutie all the breaking]], she caves in and becomes one toward Senel. To be specific, [[spoiler:her Merines powers are activated because of Fenimore's death, but she doesn't give in to Nerifes completely due to her love for Senel (despite his earlier rejection of her) until she gets hit in the face with the degree to which Senel and Stella kept her in the dark, reminding her of how badly Senel has always rejected her, so she gives into Nerfies' control out of both anger toward Senel and suicidal despair, feeling that he never loved her in any fashion and thus she has nothing to live for.]]
** It’s PlayedForLaughs during the Character Quests, violently pinching Senel over a misunderstanding between him and Grune, as well as intimidating Norma with her Eres after the later tried to convince Senel to let her stay at his house.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Her in-game mugshot does ''not'' look fifteen. Her battle model, now that's a different story.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Will Raynard (Will Raynerd)]]
!!! '''Voiced by:''' Creator/SusumuChiba (JP), Creator/CamClarke (EN)
[[quoteright:185:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Will185_2166.jpg]]

The sheriff of Werites Beacon, although he would rather be a natural historian. He is very knowledgeable about the monsters inhabiting the Legacy, and has a tendency to give lectures on monsters whether people want to hear it or not. Although he is huge and wields a gigantic hammer, he is a [[SquishyWizard Crystal Eren]]. He has a daughter named Harriet.
----
* AdventurerArchaeologist: He's quite interested in old ruins and bones, but usually doesn't get much chance to travel.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:To his daughter, after his ex-wife died, and he didn't even attend her funeral. Granted, he was a wanted criminal at the time she died, so he had good reason to not show up.]]
* CoolOldGuy: Well, Norma thinks he's old. Will keeps insisting that 28 isn't old.
* DullSurprise: He can be guilty of this sometimes. Perhaps Creator/CamClarke just didn't get enough sleep before recording his lines?
* {{Expy}}: Of Raine from ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia''. Both were exiled from their homeland, will violently whack the other party members upside the head when they do something stupid, mainly one character in particular (Genis to Raine, and Norma to Will), and are also so overly fascinated with ancient ruins and the like that they’ll tune out everything and everyone around them in the process; often referred to as “Nerd” mode, and “Ruin” mode, respectively.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: He's a mage type character and very weak physically, despite being the biggest and most muscular of the playable characters. He even uses a ''hammer''. This is even lampshaded in a skit where someone mentions he could switch to Iron Eres.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: He is named after the English writer William Shakespeare.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's actually 28.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's fairly icy when it comes to matters regarding saving Werites Beacon, but is otherwise fairly nice.
* TapOnTheHead: His trademark tactic to get the others straighten up, or retaliation to them getting on his nerves, mostly Norma.
* TeamDad: It helps that he's the oldest and the smartest. He sort of falls into this role by default.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: As much as he insists 28 isn't old, he's still very mature for someone in their late twenties.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Chloe Valens]]
!!! '''Voiced by:''' Creator/MasumiAsano (JP), Heather Halley (EN)
[[quoteright:185:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Chloe185_3991.jpg]]

A knight from Gadoria who joins the party. She came to the Legacy to find a swordsman with with a snake tattoo on his arm. She fights using a sword, and plays a little more like the classic ''VideoGame/TalesSeries'' [[TheHero Hero]], even using many of their artes combined with some of her own.
----

* ActionGirl: One of the most badass girls in the whole ''VideoGame/TalesSeries''. It's interesting to note that she's the only female swordsman who's built like a traditional Tales hero.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: She has a crush on Senel, which isn't returned. Realizing this helps her get over it.
%%* BadassCape
* CannotSpitItOut: Her romantic feelings for Senel. [[spoiler:She finally does admit it to Shirley, but also realizes that Senel isn't looking for a romantic partner who fights by his side.]]
* {{Chickification}}: Subverted. Despite falling in love and getting in touch with her feminine side, she does not become 'weak', either physically or emotionally.
* DullSurprise: Just listen to half of the English VA's lines and try to deny she's guilty of this. Frustratingly enough, she also varies between this and LargeHam in combat, showing that the voice actress ''is'' capable of sounding HotBlooded like Japanese Chloe, and is likely just badly directed.
* EasilyForgiven: [[spoiler:For stabbing Senel when he stops her from committing ''murder''. However, she did pay a price for this. ]]
* GlassCannon: She can deal a ton of damage but she lacks Senel's durability.
* HotBlooded: Mainly in the Japanese version, see DullSurprise above.
* ImportantHaircut: Before she started her quest for revenge, her hair was much longer. In the entire game proper, her hair is quite short.
* ImprobableUseOfAWeapon: A few of her artes involve her using her sword as a pole-vault while she kicks them.
* LadyOfWar: She's a full-fledged knight, and acts that way.
* LawfulStupid: She acts this way at first, but quickly learns better.
* RedemptionInTheRain: [[spoiler:The end of her character quest has her do this with Senel.]]
* RescueRomance: Starts falling for Senel after he saves her from drowning. Although she does later admit that [[spoiler:the real reason behind her feelings for him is that he reminds her of herself, and that such a kindred spirit helps ease the pain in her own life. Ultimately, she accepts that she can still hold on to these feelings even if Senel remains just her friend.]]
* RevengeBeforeReason: [[spoiler:At first. She's even willing to stab Senel through the stomach and leave him for dead to get revenge for her parents' murder.]]
* SensualSpandex: Whatever she's wearing, it's way too form-fitting to be proper armor.
* ShipSinking: [[spoiler:When she stabs Senel after he tries to prevent her from taking revenge against Stingle. Though Senel forgives her she realizes, and accepts, that their relationship will never be more than friendly, but she'll still have feelings for him.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Her only elemental artes are Lightning-based. Oddly enough, she can add ''[[AnIcePerson freezing]]'' effects to them.
* ShoutOut: [[Anime/FinalFantasyUnlimited Is that you, Lisa?]] Or no wait... [[Anime/SamuraiChamploo Fuu?]]
* ShoutOutThemeNaming: She is named after the character Chloë from the 1947 novel, ''Literature/FrothOnTheDaydream'', by French author Boris Vian.
* SuperDrowningSkills: She doesn't die instantly when touching water, but her swimming skills are nonexistent. This would be why [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes she's scared of water.]]
%%* {{Tsundere}}: Type A.
* WhatTheHellHero: She pulls this on Senel a few times. The other characters return the favor after [[spoiler:she stabs Senel when he tries to stop her from taking revenge in her Character Quest]].
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:To Stingle. She wishes to kill him to avenge the death of her parents and regain the honor of the Valens family name.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Norma Beatty (Norma Biatty)]]
!!! '''Voiced by:''' Creator/KaoriMizuhashi (JP), Amy Gross (EN)

An eccentric archaeologist/treasure hunter who came to the Legacy to find the a mythical stone called Everlight that can supposedly grant any wish. She uses [[SquishyWizard Crystal Eres]], and knows more than anybody else about various locations around the Legacy. She wields a [[ImprobableWeaponUser straw, and attacks by blowing bubbles out of it]].
----
* TenMinuteRetirement: Exclaims that she’s tired of hoping and decides to give up on finding the Everlight. Zamaran spurs her back into continuing the search.
* ActionGirl: When you can fight enemies off by blowing bubbles at them, you deserve this title.
* ACupAngst: She's not flat at all, but she does complain about being the least busty out of all the female party members, especially compared to Grune.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: Her quest for the Everlight means she had to learn a lot about ancient history and culture.
* AllForNothing: During her HeroicBSOD, she confesses that she didn’t want to have Shirley translate the Relares because she was afraid of the possibility that her research on the Everlight would’ve led to this outcome.
* ButtMonkey: Early on, less so once Moses shows up to take the role.
%%* CleavageWindow
* GeniusDitz: She's actually a very skilled archaeologist, and managed to [[spoiler:learn Relares, an ancient and complex language that's usually only known by the Ferines, entirely on her own.]]
* GenkiGirl: Her speech is full of non-sequitirs, she gives nicknames to literally everyone she meets, and she's incredibly pouty and childish.
* TheHeart: She's essentially the backbone of the group, in her own annoying way. She cracks jokes, throws around nicknames, and basically keeps everyone from becoming [[{{Angst}} emo-bots]] for most of the game (Moses and Grune excluded).
* HeroicBSOD: She goes through one after getting poisoned from triggering a trap. The Black Mist is most likely the cause.
* ImportantHairAccessory: It is a memento of her mentor.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: It's not the fact that she uses a straw as a weapon, but she attacks by ''blowing bubbles'' out of it.
* JiveTurkey: Lampshaded. "Yo yo yo, moms, pops, what's shakin? ...No, they'd cry if they read that."
* LeeroyJenkins: Not to the degree of Moses but still noticeable. She will charge headfirst into danger and tinker with things that shouldn’t be tinkered with. It’s for this reason that Will sees the need to constantly remind her to be careful.
* TheMatchmaker: Norma gives Chloe advice on how to act on her crush on Senel, whether Chloe likes it or not, or even [[{{Troll}} whether the advice is even sound.]]
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Named after the American author Norma Field.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: It's the main reason why Will is so quick to remind her that she needs to be careful, much to her chagrin. Some of her brash moves throughout the story will often lead to this happening, either for laughs or for more serious instances.
* TheNicknamer: Though she's the only one who ever uses them, she provides nicknames for everyone she meets, even her enemies.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In her Character Quest, she’s completely incensed by Zamaran’s presence, which is certainly out of place for her usually bubbly self.
* PercussiveMaintenance: Most of the time her go-to form of maintenance on ancient and unknown structures is to simply kick it into working order.
* ThePollyanna: A very straight example, as she's the most upbeat in the whole group.
* TheRunaway: Most likely done to complete her late teacher’s goal of finding the Everlight. Zamaran’s reason for coming to the Legacy is to bring her back to the Mainland.
* SelflessWish: The Everlight has the power to grant a wish. She does indeed make her wish [[spoiler: to restore Zamaran's sight.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Norma happily ships Senel with both Chloe and Shirley, and [[TheMatchmaker actively gives Chloe relationship advice]].
* StatingTheSimpleSolution: Completely Subverted. At one point during her Character Quest, she’s asked why she didn’t just let Shirley translate the Relares writings for her. She confesses that she was afraid of seeing the real answer and that she might be wrong about the Everlight truly existing.

A bandit who kidnaps Shirley early in the game only to join the party later on. He has a large Galf, a wolf-like monster, named Giet that he keeps as a pet. He's very outgoing and friendly, and treats the other party members like siblings. He fights by throwing javelins at his opponents.
----
* ABoyAndHisX: His character quest is all about him and Giet [[spoiler: with Giet becoming wild and forcing them to part.]]
* AccentAdaptation: In Japanese, Moses speaks with a Kyuushu regional dialect. In the English localization, he was given a southern accent.
* BottomlessMagazines: Never seems to run out of spears, no matter how many times he throws them. They always appear right back in his hand, too. Norma lampshades this in a skit where she mentions she'll catch the spear next time he throws it.
* ButtMonkey: Lampshaded with one of his titles, "Insult to Injury".
* EasilyForgiven: Hilariously subverted. Norma expects Senel to easily start working with him when they both want to save Shirley. [[MyFistForgivesYou Senel instead beats up Moses.]]
* {{Expy}}: The character designer of ''Legendia'' is the same one who did the character design who did ''Samurai Champloo''. In a way, he looks a lot like Mugen and could be the red-haired spear-wielding counterpart of him. [[Creator/KazuyaNakai Guess who they're both voiced by?]]
* EyeScream: As a child, [[spoiler:Giet claws out his eye when Moses was trying to save him from an Egg Bear]].
* FamilyMan: Invoked. He frequently brings this up in the story and will not hesitate to go after anyone who threatens those that he considers his family (he even has a title with the same name). This is especially noticeable during Jay’s character quest, even going so far as to call him his brother.
* FluffyTamer: Giet, a Grand Galf (an extremely powerful monster), is his pet.
* HotBlooded: He rarely gets mad, but when he does, he gets very loud.
* IdiotHero: Unlike Norma, he doesn't have any special knowledge to back him up; he really is an idiot. This puts him at odds with Jay quite often.
* IllKillYou: After he believes his bandit comrades are dead, he has to be held back by the rest of the party to avoid [[RevengeBeforeReason a hopeless battle]] with the supposed killer. That doesn't stop him from screaming "Giet's gonna feast on your heart tonight!"
* JavelinThrower: His weapon of choice, letting him fight from a further range than the other melee party members.
* LargeHam: Moreso than anyone else in the group.
* LeeroyJenkins: Will recklessly charge into any fight, much to the detriment of everyone around him.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "A Cheerful Bandit"
* LikesOlderWomen: He admits he likes Grune, specifically because she is mature and therefore, er, more developed.
* ManlyTears: At the end of his character quest, he cries as [[spoiler:he has to let Giet go before he goes wild]].
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Named after the Romanian writer Moses Gaster.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: During his Character Quest, he’s so focused on the possibility of Giet turning wild that he’s not fazed by Norma and Jay’s taunting.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: The only thing his bandits really do is kidnap Shirley at the start of the game. After that, they hang around Werites Beacon and watch the town when the party isn't there.
* RummageSaleReject: Just what are those pant-like things with the zebra pattern? They look like they're about to fall off all the time!
* StarterVillain: Moses is the first named antagonist of the game. He kidnaps Shirley, forcing Senel, Will and Chloe to storm his hideout to save her.
* VictoryPose: [[HappyDance "MOSES HAPPY DANCE!]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ydSIzwVgBQ YEE-HAW!"]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Jay, though he’s more willing to admit to it.

A reclusive information broker. He is a young ninja who lives with the Oresoren, a tribe of anthropomorphic otters. He's a snide and snarky Iron Eren who fights using knives, combined with kicks and headbutts.
----
* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:Solon adopted Jay solely to raise him as a killing machine prodigy and abused him psychologically and physically at every turn.]]
* CannotSpitItOut: Chloe notes that Jay has trouble expressing his feelings. Additionally, even though he is told ''several'' times during his Character Quest to let the others know if something is bothering him, he keeps shrugging it off by saying "There really isn't anything", a variation of the typical ''VideoGame/TalesSeries'' quote of "It's nothing". Not very believable after what the gamers just saw last dungeon. He is also often seen denying his worry or positive emotions for others, most notably Moses.
* TheChessmaster: If he’s not using his strategic skills for combat, he’ll likely be using them to [[{{Troll}} get under people’s skin.]]
* ChildSoldier: [[spoiler: Trained and raised by Solon to be an emotionless killing machine only to be used as a decoy for Solon's escape in a battle and was abandoned.]] He was later found and raised by the Oresoren.
* CompetitionFreak: Downplayed. He claims that he gets anxious whenever he finds himself and someone else really good at something and has to compete with them to find out who’s better.
* DeadpanSnarker: Even his introduction. He simply can't stand knowing that there are two people who are good at the same thing; he has to know which one is better. The best of his snark is saved for "that stupid bandit," Moses.
%%* DudeLooksLikeALady: It's the make-up.
* EasilyForgiven: In his character quest, though understandably so given that [[spoiler:his betrayal was due to Solon blackmailing him with the lives of his surrogate family.]]
* HatesBeingTouched: All too obviously. Shown in both game scenes and victory poses, especially with Moses. [[spoiler:Becomes ''much'' sadder in hindsight when his past is revealed.]]
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Come on, he wears ''purple'', and his skin is pale white.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Named after the American author Jay [=McInerney=].
* TheNapoleon: Occasionally, mostly in his post-battle skits with Moses.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He is considerably more irritable and serious in his character quest. The party openly wonders what's troubling him. [[spoiler: When Solon unveils himself, he is reduced to a terrified wreck.]]
%%* ParentalAbandonment: ''[[spoiler:Twice!]]''
* ProfessionalKiller: [[spoiler:Was trained to be one. It gave him his ideas for battle strategy.]]
* RaisedByWolves: After Jay was raised and abandoned by [[spoiler: Solon]], he is found and raised by hundreds of Oresoren, who are basically talking otters.
* RedBaron: "The Unseen"
* SitcomArchNemesis: With Moses. It slowly evolves into the VitriolicBestBuds dynamic below.
* TheStrategist: He is considered a genius in tactics and is highly knowledgeable of the ship and its geography. For this reason, he is the made the strategy officer for the war against Vaclav, formulating plans with the help of Will and Maurits.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: The "Sugar" side comes out extremely rarely, though it happens far more in the character quests.
* TheTrickster: He’s done this to everyone (barring Grune) at least once, but his favorite victim is Moses.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Moses, even if he [[{{Tsundere}} doesn’t want to admit it.]]
-->'''Jay:''' He's so easy to read. He can't conceal his irritation at all.\
'''Senel:''' And that's why you can't help worrying about him, right?\
'''Jay:''' I'm not... worried...
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:Jay was ''meant'' to be a "destroyer" through his raising by Solon, but ended up a just-plain Woobie since the Oresorrens' raising of him quelled his murderous instincts.]]
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Also younger than they ''sound'', too. In the English version? He does ''not'' sound sixteen. [[spoiler:Justified, as Jay was raised to be emotionless. While his Japanese version went for the CreepyChild route, the English version went for the "grown-up-fast" type.]]

* AmnesiacGod: [[spoiler:She is actually a goddess who incarnated to stop Schwartz. However, the world was not old enough to support her power, so she lost her memories. She eventually gains them.]]
* BlackMage: The only playable crystal eren who learns no healing or support spells.
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:After defeating Schwartz, she releases the Summon Spirits to the world, and disappears, wishing the party farewell.]]
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Charge!"
* ChekhovsGunman: If you look, you first see her in a crowd in Werites Beacon within the first couple hours of gameplay.
* CloudCuckoolander: Anything that comes out of her mouth perfectly exemplifies this trope. [[spoiler:Once she regains her memory, however, the cuckoolander personality goes, and stays gone.]]
* ColourfulThemeNaming: "grune" is the feminine variant of ''grun'', a German word meaning "green". It's a case of OddNameOut, as she is the only playable character whose name isn't derived from Literature.
* CoolBigSis: To the rest of the party. [[spoiler:It helps she's ReallySevenHundredYearsOld.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: The biggest CloudCuckoolander in the series by far, would ''you'' expect her to be such a badass fighter with powerful spells? And then, once she remembers who she is, [[spoiler:the CloudCuckoolander attitude vanishes completely]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: If you look closely during the first and second Bantam Bouncers scenes, she's in the crowd that gathers.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: [[spoiler:The game treats the player to an elaborate cutscene of her gaining more power when she gets her memories back, but this causes no change in her, gameplay-wise. All it really does is change her voice. It is cleverly disguised if the player has been leveling up at the expected rate. LeakedExperience lets Grune learn her ultimate spell while she is missing from the party, making it look like she gained it from the power up cutscene, making this a bit of a Zig-zagged trope.]]
* GlassCannon: Being an offensive caster she deal a lot of damage, but can't take much in return.
%%* GodIsGood: [[spoiler:And helps you directly!]]
* HotGoddess: [[spoiler:As the men of the party are happy to point out, especially Moses.]]

* StatuesqueStunner: She's 175 cm or 5'9". She's TALLER than Senel.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: [[RunningGag You may be noticing a trend with these characters]]. What sets Grune apart is that in the Main Quest, she's entirely "Sugar." [[spoiler:After she gets her memories back]], she switches over to "Ice," and never switches back.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: The description of her default armor, "Cocktail Dress," reads as follows: "A revealing dress that leaves little to the imagination."
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:After regaining her memories.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: [[spoiler:This too, after she regains her memories.]] Whereas before, Grune is lighthearted and downright flirtatious with everyone, afterwards she's very blunt, direct and even spiteful at times. Her in-battle and after-battle quotes also change from being forgetful and flighty to insulting and mocking her enemies.
* WalkingSpoiler: Many tropes about Grune spoil her true identity, which is only revealed during the last story arc.
* YinYangBomb: Somewhat, as most of her spells are curse and sea elemental. [[spoiler:Makes sense, since she's a goddess.]]

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: A prince who manages to be the toughest fighter in his kingdom.
* BloodKnight: He loves a good fight and warfare, expressing disappointment in his first [[CurbStompBattle fight]] with the heroes and being eager to wage war against the Holy Rexalian Empire.
* TheDeterminator: At around half health in his boss battle, he vocally expresses some doubt in winning, but pushes through refusing to give up. And [[spoiler: even after he's defeated, he gets up (to Senel's shock) on the verge of death to [[OmnicidalManiac take the world with him.]]]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: He's clearly not a nice man, but his machinations don't lead to much of the game's second act [[spoiler:except for getting Stella killed]].
* TheDreaded: It's obvious he terrifies most people with his horrible actions. In fact, [[spoiler: Schwartz summons a phantom of a long dead Vaclav made from the party's deep-rooted fear of him to kill them.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a nasty scar running across his left eye.
%%* EvilMentor: To [[spoiler:Senel]].

* HateSink: Unlike the Ferines' antagonists who have a FreudianExcuse behind their actions, Vaclav is simply evil.
* TheHeavy: Downplayed, as he only drives the plot during the first act. However, Vaclav causes most of the problems for the heroes: [[spoiler:destroying Stella's village, kidnapping and torturing Shirley and Fenimore, attempting to nuke Chloe's hometown, and causing Stella's death. Even after he is killed, Vaclav's use of the Nerifes Cannon caused the Kingdom of Gadoria to perceive Shirley as a threat and a squad was sent to capture/kill her; this leads to Fenimore's death and Shirley becoming the Merines.]]
* LargeAndInCharge: He's at least two heads taller than any of the party members who get a chance to fight him.
%%* {{Leitmotif}}: "March"
* MadScientist: Before the ordeal with Senel and Shirley, [[spoiler: Vaclav desperately attempted to create an artificial Merines through innocent lives to no success. Stingle was allowed to use leftovers from Vaclav's experiments in his pursuits of finding a cure for his daughter's illness.]]
* MusclesAreMeaningful: A ridiculously sexy muscle man that mainly uses his fists in combat. It's implied he abuses performance-enhancing drugs that nurture his HairTriggerTemper.
* ObviouslyEvil: Complete with LargeHam tendencies and an EvilLaugh, wearing RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver armor also with SpikesOfVillainy, you'd know he's a bad guy just by looking at him.
* PowerFist: Like Senel, he fights with his bare hands. But Vaclav is noticeably more powerful, even knocking all of the party out with one move.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Vaclav wears black armor, has a pair of red boots and a villainous red cape to match.
* {{Sadist}}: Loves to see people suffer. When interrogating Shirley to read an ancient tomb, she notices dried blood splattered all it, and Vaclav can barely contain his excitement when describing of how he tortured and killed previous candidates that refused to do what he demands of Shirley.
* SoreLoser: Judging by his defeat quote: ''"Never! YOU WILL NEVER BEAT ME!"''. He also decides to trigger the Nerifes Cannon even though he has already lost.
* TakingYouWithMe: As he's dying from his horrible wounds, he curses Senel and pulls out a remote control to fire the Nerifes Cannon at the Mainland, wildly shouting [[OmnicidalManiac "everything shall be destroyed!"]]
* WouldHitAGirl: Regularly beats and abuses Shirley in captivity, with implications of molesting her off-screen.

* UndignifiedDeath: Cashel goes down dying after being utterly humiliated by [[spoiler:Jay figuring out his tricks]] and charging at the party, can easily be turned into a complete pushover in his fight, and as he lies on the ground pathetically like Moses' gang he ''believed'' to have killed (unaware that his comrade Stingle helped them recover and likely directed their escape), he chokes several times before taking his last breath. At least Melanie, the Terror that went down before him gives a SorryThatImDying sentence; he doesn't even get one.
* VillainousBreakdown: When Jay easily sees through all his tricks and mocks his skills, he screams in emotional despair before charging at the party. {{Downplayed}} in the dub, where he merely sounds annoyed.

* FantasticRacism: The ''worst'' among all Ferines. He is so adamant to see the Orerines destroyed that when Maurits at least stayed civil with the team, Walter is still a huge {{Jerkass}} to them. His reasoning isn't exactly revealed, but implied toward the end that he willfully ignores the blatant goodness of Senel and company (despite them saving his life) due to his jealousy of Senel.
* FreudianExcuse: It's implied that his animosity towards Senel is due to the fact that he was raised to be the personal bodyguard for the Merines, Shirley, but since she already sees a bodyguard-like figure in her [[NotBloodSiblings "brother"]] Senel, that and [[LoveInterests something more,]] it essentially renders his whole reason of existing [[AllForNothing pointless]].
* {{Foil}}: To Senel. Both of them have similar temperaments, similar fighting styles, and a similar devotion to Shirley while acting like {{Jerkass}}es to everyone else. The difference comes in their development, as Senel ends up broadening his horizons and improving as a person, whereas Walter stubbornly doubles down on his pre-existing beliefs and attitudes, becoming worse than before. 430* HateSink: The Ferines have [[FreudianExcuse understandable reasons to hate Orerines.]] But even acts of kindness from Orerines aren't enough for him to accept that any of them might be good [[spoiler: and his reasons for supporting genocide are ultimately shown to be the result of [[CrazyJealousGuy petty jealousy]] rather than any understandable grudge.]]

* HopelessBossFight: [[spoiler:Three of them! He finally goes down the fourth time you fight him, but he's no pushover.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: Appropriately titled "Delques Black Wings."
* {{Jerkass}}: He trumps Senel on this department, and unlike Senel, he gets ''worse'' instead of better.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Despite Maurits claiming that he may have a nice size, Walter only show kindness to the other Ferines. Even after being saved by Moses and Giet, he don't thank them.
* MeaningfulName: His last name means black wings in [[{{Fictionary}} Relares]].
* NeverMyFault: His [[spoiler:dying words are blaming Senel for all that has happened to him; he honestly never once considered that maybe he brought a lot of his problems on himself.]]
* PetTheDog: He has one act of decency toward someone who isn't Shirley in the game, which is giving Fenimore a job to do in the war against Vaclav after seeing how desperately she wants to help out somehow. Later, he's also upset when [[spoiler:Maurits lets Fenimore die.]]
* TheRival: To Senel. Turns out he wants Shirley's attention as much as Senel does.
* SelectiveObliviousness: He chooses to ignore the good deeds of the party and the Orerines as well as any Ferines’ high opinion of them due to his jealous grudge against Senel.
* UngratefulBastard: He doesn't care that the main characters saved his life, he still hates all Orerines as much as ever.

** [[spoiler: To clarify: it's not implied or made explicit that he's been "let off the hook," so much as the political situation of the Ferines, the Legacy and their relationship with Orerines/the nations of the Mainland make the prospect... "thorny," to say the least.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:He lets Fenimore die so Shirley will complete the Rite of Accession. He also leads Shirley to believe that it was Senel that cause the destruction of her hometown. Granted, Senel had something to do with it, but he couldn't have known it was coming, either.]]

The law-enforcement duo of Werites Beacon, Curtis and Isabella call themselves the Bantam Bouncers. They almost always appear together, and do far more singing and showing off than actual fighting, even though they're actually both highly competent soldiers.
----
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Their goofiness is a masquerade for what they really are: elite bodyguards for the sovereign of Rexalia, the strongest and most feared nation in the world. Even without his Eres during then, Curtis led the beatdown of the knight trying to arrest Senel and Chloe without any troubles.
* BrickJoke: Early in the game, they sing twice about how fighting is not allowed in Werites Beacon. Much ''much'' later in the game...they show up and arrest someone else for attempting to arrest Chloe and Senel in Werites Beacon.
** Hilariously, Curtis does so by appearing and doing his usual singing gig without Isabella. [[spoiler:And then '''[[TalkToTheFist decks the confused man in the face]]''' mid-sentence, triggering a cartoony curbstomp.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: The two look like something that came out of TheSeventies. Senel beats the living crap out of them (off-screen) and doesn't take them seriously. Then they lead an army against Vaclav's. Nobody was laughing at them ''then''.
* GoldfishPoopGang: Though you never actually fight them...at least you aren't ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2_SEh7eDao required]]'' to.

* LetsGetDangerous: They're wacky pacifists who sing about how violence isn't allowed in the city. Then, when the war starts, they take up the reins and lead the citizens of the Legacy into battle against Vaclav's forces.
* TheQuietOne: Isabella doesn't speak much aside from the occasional "Yes, Curtis." She does get a solo number introducing the arena, though.
* SpontaneousChoreography: This was how they introduced themselves. They will break out in song whenever they get the chance, to the point where Senel can sense when it's about to happen.

[[spoiler:She seems overall far more concerned about the well-being of her love interest (Senel) than her sister (Shirley), and on occasion came to Senel's aid while ignoring Shirley, who was in much greater peril and had the fate of the world resting on her safety.]]
* GoodAngelBadAngel: [[spoiler:She takes the form of Senel's fears and doubts towards the end of the main quest.]]

* ManChild: While she's 22 years old, Mimi's mannerisms and behaviour are quite childish.
