->''"Not the last of the old Jedi, Luke. The first of the new."''
-->-- '''Master Obi-Wan Kenobi'''

Founded by Luke Skywalker after the final death of Darth Sidious, the New Jedi Order filled the void left from the Old Jedi Order's destruction during Order 66. Unlike the Jedi of yesteryear, the New Jedi were more relaxed on certain policies such as recruitment and family ties, with several changes being either deliberate or due to Skywalker's lack of reference. Despite being heavily weakened during the Yuuzhan Vong War, they would continue to grow stronger and remain in power for a whole century, until the One Sith took over the revived Galactic Empire. But even then, several Jedi remained, and the order would once again return a few years later.

The Grand Master of the reformed Jedi Order, Luke began rebuilding the Order in 11 ABY, establishing a Jedi Academy in the Grand Temple on Yavin 4, with an initial class of twelve students. From there, the Order grew into more than a thousand Jedi by 44 ABY, with Luke as the head of the Jedi Council, having led the Jedi through the turmoil of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Swarm War, Second Galactic Civil War, the emergence of the Lost Tribe of the Sith, and the attacks of the Dark Side entity known as Abeloth.

Through the turmoil, Luke has gained and lost much: he married former Emperor's Hand Mara Jade and had a son named Ben, but also lost his nephew Anakin Solo and close friend Chewbacca in the Yuuzhan Vong War, and his other nephew Jacen fell to the Dark Side, becoming Darth Caedus, and was killed by his twin sister Jaina. He continued to lead the Jedi Order against Abeloth and the Lost Tribe, before eventually retiring in ''Crucible''.
----
* TheAce: Jedi, General, Pilot, Teacher, etc. Just about whatever Luke Skywalker sets his mind to, he ends up being good at. Destroying the First Death Star, leading an army, and rebuilding the Jedi Order from scratch are just a few of his achievements. His accomplishments as a Jedi are probably the most impressive, since he only received around a few weeks of formal training at the hands of Obi-Wan and Yoda during the original trilogy. This training was enough to allow him to, for a time, fight evenly with Darth Vader on Cloud City. While Luke eventually lost that duel, he goes on to defeat Vader just a year later on the Second Death Star. Afterwards, his skills continue to increase, with Luke defeating the Cloned Emperor a few years later, a fight which featured waves of power emanating from his body. During the assault on Supreme Overlord Shimrra's Citadel at the conclusion of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Luke's bladework was so fast that he appeared to be standing at the center of a hurricane to his niece and nephew, defeating some of the Vong's best warriors, along with the Supreme Overlord shortly after.
** In terms of the Force, Luke seems to be the perfect counterpart to the Emperor, in that there doesn't seem to be an ability that he can't master if he puts his mind to it. While George Lucas stated that Anakin never managed to fulfill his own vast potential, he also stated that Luke had the potential to do so, and by all counts he did. Literature/TheCourtshipOfPrincessLeia sees Luke instinctively healing himself from the brink of death, and Literature/ShadowsOfTheEmpire features the Jedi instinctively learning to enhance his reflexes with The Force, which he goes on to master to the point that he can use it during combat at any time. His skill with Telekinesis is such that he can knock down AT-AT's with ease, rebuild one of Darth Vader's castles, and later tear the same castle down. He can also do more basic things, like absorb laser blasts and cast Jedi Mind Tricks.
** By the time Luke is Grand Master of the New Jedi Order, he also possesses a number of rare Force abilities as well. These include the ability to walk on lava, become a Force Ghost, create copies of objects with The Force, cloak himself from detection by other Force Users, and attain a state known as Oneness, during which time a Force User achieves an advanced connection to The Force that allows them to almost become a part of it, with luminous energy flowing from Luke's body when he does this. By the end of the ''Franchise/StarWarsLegends'' continuity, Luke is easily the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, if not the most powerful Force User in general; with him being seen as a LivingLegend and a necessary presence in solving the galaxy's problems.
* AcePilot: He inherited it from his father, and is considered to be one of the best in the galaxy, alongside Han and Wedge.
* AllLovingHero: He'll offer second chances to almost anyone, unless they're absolutely steeped in the Dark Side.
** Being a strong believer in a redemption, Luke didn’t hold a strict view of destroying DarkSide artifacts and killing its users on the spot, instead urging his students to help those taken by it and help them return to the Light.
* ArtificialLimbs: Has an artificial hand.
* TheAtoner: Has shades of this at times. Part of the reason he left the New Republic Military after the events of ''Literature/LukeSkywalkerAndTheShadowsOfMindor'' is because of the tremendous loss of life that resulted from the battle, which Luke felt personally responsible for not being able to stop, especially since part of the reason for so much death came about as a result of a decision he'd knowingly made. His resulting decision to finally focus on restoring the Jedi Order could be seen as him attempting to atone by ensuring that there will be more Jedi in the future to keep the peace and help prevent such situations. Luke also falls into this mentality whenever one of his students falls to the Dark Side, as seen in the aftermath of Jacen becoming Darth Caedus being Luke willingly travelling the galaxy to learn ''why'' Jacen fell.
-->''Skywalker lifted his face from his hands, and his eyes were dark. Wounded. Haunted by shadows. "My best trick is to do one thing - to make one small move, even a simple choice - and kill thousands of people. Thousands."''
* BadassTeacher: Luke is the new generation's Yoda. This means that not only has he personally trained the majority of active Jedi in his era at one time or another, he's also capable of thoroughly trouncing anyone who threatens his students. Be warned though, Luke doesn't let his students slack on their training, so any threats you make against them could very easily lead to them beating you up instead, as the entire Shadow Academy learned during the Literature/YoungJediKnights series.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: One of the most polite guys you'll ever meet and his upbringing on Tatooine can even make it so that others find him to be a little bit of a dork at times, especially in his early years. However, underneath his politeness is a man who defeated Darth Vader, looked Emperor Palpatine in the face and didn't blink, and who has fought a literally Dark Side EldritchAbomination and lived to tell the tale; he will be more than happy to show you just how dangerous he can be if you become his enemy.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: Luke isn't exactly talkative, but only a fool underestimates him.
* BigGood: As leader of the Jedi, he's widely seen as the go-to guy for problems. Even when there's anti-Jedi sentiment, it's often not focused on him.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Besides the fact that the FinalBattle against Abeloth left Luke near-death and comatose for several weeks, it is repeatedly implied that they have only temporarily dealt with her.]]
* BroughtDownToBadass: Being exposed to [[AntiMagic Ysalamiri]] means that he is a veteran soldier with a laser sword who can still kick your ass.
* TheChessmaster: He manipulates Darth Caedus towards the end of ''Legacy of the Force'' and pulls off a huge BatmanGambit on the Lost Tribe of Sith in ''Fate of the Jedi''. In the former series, he also pulls a BatmanGambit on ''Boba Fett''.
* ChickMagnet: The number of love interests he had before the authors settled on Mara is a tad ridiculous. To put it another way, it says quite a bit when Luke Skywalker ends up with more love interests than Han Solo or Lando Calrissian, who are respectively the LoveableRogue and TheCharmer.
* CodeName: His call sign in a fighter is "Farm Boy". Before this, he was the original "Rogue Leader" after he founded Rogue Squadron with Wedge Antilles and Arhul Narra.
* ContemplateOurNavels: Like many other Jedi Masters throughout the series, Luke seems to fall into this naturally when thinking about the deeper mysteries of the Force and how everyone is connected to or affected by it.
* DeadpanSnarker: Oh so very, very much, especially towards members of his family. Also gets in some priceless SnarkToSnarkCombat with the Lost Tribe.
-->'''Sarasu Taalon''': I'm aware that you Jedi don't place the same value on discipline as we Sith do, but surely when a father gives a command, he expects his son to obey.
-->'''Luke Skywalker''': That works for you? With teenagers? I hope you don't expect me to believe that.
* {{Determinator}}: When it comes to redeeming others in most situations. The obvious example is his father, who Luke refused to strike down in a moment of anger and who he never stopped believing in, even when he was being shocked with Force Lightning by Palpatine. While he doesn't make an attempt to redeem every single Darksider that he comes across, Luke's belief in and commitment to redeeming people remains with him throughout the series. After a lifetime of working against the governments that Luke had fought to found and support, he still believed that Lumiya could be redeemed during the events of ''Literature/LegacyOfTheForce''. Despite falling to the Dark Side and abandoning Luke's Academy, Luke never stopped trying to redeem Brakiss whenever they met during the events of ''The New Rebellion'' and the ''Young Jedi Knights'' series respectively, even taking it as a personal failure that he couldn't help the other man.
** He spends most of ''[[Literature/TheCallistaTrilogy Children of the Jedi]]'' weak, wounded, and starving, but consistently pushes himself beyond any reasonable limits.
* EnlightenmentSuperPowers: Standard for any Force User attempting to draw on the Light Side of the Force. Many of the more subtle Force abilities that Luke attains fall under this, such as the ability to heal others, emit actual light, form force fields, and to calm himself and others. Jedi are typically portrayed as being at their most powerful when they are calm, as it means that can be properly attuned to The Force. For Luke, this leads to him being able to attain Oneness, during which time he completely joins with The Force and becomes a focus for its energy.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Especially towards the Lost Tribe of Sith.
* HappilyMarried: To Mara Jade [[spoiler:until Caedus killed her in ''Sacrifice''.]]
* HeartbrokenBadass: [[spoiler: After Mara's death.]]
* HotForStudent: A non-creepy example since both were adults around the same age group, but Luke ended up marrying Mara Jade, who was both a formal student as his Jedi Praxeum and an informal student during the events of ''The Thrawn Trilogy'' and ''Hand of Thrawn'' respectively.
* TheIdealist: Standard for Luke, dating back to his belief of there being good still inside Darth Vader. He almost always believes that there is a chance to redeem people who have fallen to the Dark Side, is willing to work with and accept people regardless of their backgrounds, and spends his entire life attempting to undo the damage to the galaxy that his father die and to make a better future for the next generation. As seen in ''ComicBook/StarWarsLegacy,'' even dying isn't enough to stop Luke from doing this, as he constantly shows up as a Force Ghost to help his descendant, Cade Skywalker, regain faith in the galaxy and the Jedi way. The climax of the series even see's Luke talking Cade out of committing suicide and helping Cade to put aside his fear and to accept hope.
* TheIdealistWasRight: In regards to Darth Vader. Despite Obi-Wan and Yoda's assurances that Vader and Palpatine both had to be killed, it ended up being Luke's faith in his father that proved them wrong and subsequently led to the Emperor being killed at Vader's hands. This is played with regarding Kyp Durron. Luke suffers criticism at the hands of Corran Horn during the ''Jedi Academy Trilogy'', when Kyp is basically let off scott free for killing millions. However, Kyp goes on to become one of the New Jedi Order's most powerful and skilled members and even earns a seat on the Jedi Council alongside Luke AND Corran. But, Kyp also proves to still be a source of grief for Luke in later years, specifically during the ''New Jedi Order'' series, in which Kyp leads a splinter faction of Jedi committed to fighting the Yuuzhan Vong even though Luke has ordered the Jedi not to do so.
* IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim: The major lesson Luke learns from his first journey into the cave on Dagobah and what he has to face again on the Second Death Star. This is also the reason he decides not to kill Darth Caedus on the ''Anakin Solo'' during the events of ''Legacy of the Force''; he's afraid that him killing Caedus will cause his son Ben to fall to the Dark Side and become another Caedus. Luke later goes out of his way to avoid fighting and killing Caedus for the same reason, only in regards to himself instead.
* ImplacableMan: He ''does not stop.''
* LivingLegend: Throughout the Expanded Universe, he is widely known and respected by everyone, [[TheDreaded even his enemies]].
* LogicalWeakness: One of the precepts of his New Jedi Order is that Jedi can get married and form attachments. This comes back to bite him. His attachment to Jacen is what blinds him to the fact that the latter is falling to the Dark Side (and even by the time Jacen's gone full-on Sith Lord, it takes Luke a while to realize just how far his nephew has fallen), and his attachment to Mara leads him to kill Lumiya in a state of TranquilFury. A combination of guilt and grief takes the Jedi Grand Master out of action ''in the middle of a galaxy-wide civil war,'' and means that he can't go after Jacen himself, because he knows he'll fall to the Dark Side.
** Meanwhile, the whole reason that Jacen fell to the Dark Side in the first place were his attachments to Allana and to Vergere's teachings.
* MasterSwordsman: He beat Palpatine in a straight-up duel at the age of ''29'' (though admittedly, he was being boosted by Leia's battle meditation), and continued against a string of high-level opponents, including Shmirra, Caedus, and too many Sith to count.
* MindOverMatter: As is standard for most users of The Force.
* TheMentor: Personally trained many of the Jedi who now sit beside him on the Jedi Council, as well as his nephews and niece.
* OldMaster: In ''Legacy of the Force'', he's in his sixties, and still as powerful and skilled as ever-more so, even. Over the course of ''Legends'', he also grows from a rash young man into an adult who is almost always calm, serene, and completely centered in The Force.
* OlderAndWiser: His adventures throughout the ''Franchise/StarWarsLegends'' continuity covers over 40 years between ''Film/ANewHope'' and ''Literature/StarWarsCrucible''. This means that Luke had reached the age of 64 by the time his story arc concludes. Even afterwards, he shows up as a Force ghost in ''ComicBook/StarWarsLegacy'', at the age of 157. Naturally, since he's a main character in the majority of works in the series, he develops into this by the end.
* OneManArmy: Luke is very much this.
* PapaWolf: Threatening Ben is one of the few ways to actually make him mad.
* PhysicalGod: Pretty much nothing can touch him that isn't an ancient Dark Side EldritchAbomination.
* PsychicPowers: Since this is basically what the abilities of the Force come down to, Luke naturally has access to many of them. These include telekinesis, empathy, precognition, telepathy, and even mind control and teleportation.
* ShockAndAwe: He learned how to use a variant on Force lightning called "Electric Judgment" that does not rely on TheDarkSide, and taught it to many in the Order.
* StrongerWithAge: As of ''Literature/FateOfTheJedi,'' he's in his sixties and ''still getting more powerful''.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: As the son of the Chosen One, Luke was born with an amazing amount of Force potential, which resulted in him achieving the heights of power that Anakin's fall never allowed him to.
* TaughtByExperience: Played with. Luke actually has a number of teachers, formal and informal, over the course of his life: [[Film/ANewHope Obi-Wan]], [[Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack Yoda]], [[Literature/TheThrawnTrilogy Joruus [=C'Baoth=]]], [[ComicBook/DarkEmpire Darth Sidious]], etc. However, the majority of what he learned about both the Force and being a Jedi, he learned through trial and error over the events of his life.
* TeleportersAndTransporters: Learns the Force technique "fold space," which amounts to this.
* UndyingLoyalty: To his friends and family. It was his love and loyalty to his friends that caused Palpatine's plans to fail.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Constantly praised as being this in his younger days.
-->'''Kar Vastor''': I have known Jedi. Many, many years ago. That knowing was not a gladness for me. I believed I would never know another, and I rejoiced in that belief. But it is a gladness for me to be proven wrong. I am happy to have known you, Jedi Luke Skywalker. You are more than they were.
-->'''Luke''': That's—I mean, thanks, but I barely know anything.
-->'''Kar Vastor''': So you believe. But I say to you: you are greater than the Jedi of former days.
-->'''Luke''': What makes you say that?
-->'''Kar Vastor''': Because unlike the Knights of old, Jedi Luke Skywalker… you are not afraid of the dark.
* WorldsStrongestMan: He’s been stated in various novels to be the most powerful Jedi of all time and his power surpasses that of even Yoda and other Jedi from different eras. He was about to fight on par with a resurrected Palpatine who could create force storms to destroy space and time, defeat multiple Yuuzhan Vong and even it’s leader and even use the force to move an artificial black hole. The only being he faced that’s stronger than him is [[EldritchAbomination Abeloth]].

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jaina_solo_fel_sw_7545.jpg]]
!!!'''Species:''' Human
!!!'''Homeworld:''' Coruscant

The daughter of Han and Leia Solo, older twin sister of Jacen, and older sister of Anakin. And now the wife of Jagged Fel. Jaina is one of the most powerful Jedi in the Order, and named the Sword of the Jedi by the Force through Luke during her Knighting ceremony. She is notable for her serious and sometimes abrasive demeanor, along with her amazing piloting and mechanical skills.
----
* AcePilot: Mandatory for being part of [[Literature/XWingSeries Rogue Squadron]] (and being Han Solo's daughter and Anakin Skywalker's granddaughter doesn't hurt either).
* ActionGirl: She was at once badass enough to take down one of the most powerful Sith Lords ever, [[spoiler: her twin brother nonetheless,]] and yet despite being a fully-functioning Jedi Knight and part of the Skywalker line (which practically burns with Force potential), still had to get additional training from Boba freaking Fett. In the New Jedi Order, she took down [[TheDragon the Warmaster]] single-handedly.
* FauxActionGirl: Has several unfortunate moments of this. She gets better in ''Literature/LegacyOfTheForce'' and ''Literature/FateOfTheJedi''.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: She has been trained in Mandalorian fighting techniques by Boba Fett himself, and got some tips on taking down Dark Jedi from Jagged Fel.
* BrotherSisterTeam: With Jacen, until the Literature/DarkNestTrilogy.
** TwinTelepathy: She and Jacen have this which makes them very effective as a duo. It is broken following Jacen's FaceHeelTurn but restored in his final moments.
* BrutalHonesty: Jaina inherited a lot of things from her mom, but diplomatic skills are not one of them.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Jacen's Cain.
* TheChosenOne: As the Sword of the Jedi.
* CodeName: Her callsign in a fighter is "Sticks", due to having two sticks: her lightsaber and the flight control stick.
* ColonelBadass: In the ''Literature/NewJediOrder'' while leading Twins Suns Squadron.
* DamselInDistress: All too often, mostly in ''Literature/NewJediOrder''. She manages to make it out of ''Literature/FateOfTheJedi'' without this happening to her.
* DeadGuyJunior: She's named after Han's mother, Jaina, who had gone missing with his father when he was still a child.
* DeadpanSnarker: It's genetic, apparently.
* GodGuise: She was mistaken by some Yuuzhan Vong for Yun-Harla, the Trickster Goddess. She took advantage of this for a bit of psychological warfare, which wrecked havoc among the more devout Yuuzhan Vong who fought her.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She [[spoiler: killed her own brother]], and trained with the Mandalorians.
* GoodOldWays: Like her dad, she trusts older technology that she's put her hands on and built or repaired herself rather than cutting edge gear made by someone else. She's notable for using a joystick to pilot her starfighter, in-universe a control style several millennia old.
* HasAType: She's usually attracted to badass men with dark hair and green eyes.
* HeroicBSOD: When Anakin died. Later gets another one after being forced to kill Jacen.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: With Zekk.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She can come across as very abrasive, but she's also a committed Jedi Master through and through.
* TheLancer: Inheriting her father's position in ''Literature/YoungJediKnights''.
* LaserBlade: True to her mechanic, tinkering nature, she constructs her lightsaber from scrap metal almost completely from scratch, and creates her own focusing crystal in a furnace rather than find one herself more traditionally. Her blade creates a deep violet color.
* LoveTriangle: With Zekk and Jagged. She ends up with Jag at the end of ''Literature/LegacyOfTheForce'', and marries him at the end of ''[[Literature/FateOfTheJedi Apocalypse]]''.
* MasterSwordswoman: Good enough to beat Darth Caedus, who himself is just a couple tiers below Luke.
%%* OneWomanArmy
* ThePaladin: Her "Sword of the Jedi" title is basically this, the ultimate upholder of the Jedi and their virtues.
* SlaveToPR: While she tries to play it off, after the great Jedi Master Ceremony in ''Destiny's Way'', she was sullen and scared to be given such a grand title like "Sword of the Jedi". Feeling like even after killing the Warmaster, she could never stop to rest because of her need to keep a reputation as the sword.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She's basically a female Han -- an amazing pilot, awesome mechanic, and DeadpanSnarker, with her own Wookiee sidekick in Lowie.
* TemporaryBlindness: In ''Balance Point'', when she's forced to eject from her fighter and stares into a nearby ship exploding.
* WaifFu: Not especially large or muscular but one of the Jedi's greatest warriors.
* WhatTheHellHero: A number of characters criticize Jaina for her use of Force lightning after her brother's death, spending too much time with [[EvilMatriarch Ta'a Chume]], providing a test subject for a MadScientist, abusing a life debt, and sending pilots on suicide runs, to name a few in ''Dark Journey''.
* [[WhenYouComingHomeDad When You Coming Home, Mom?]]: Towards Leia in the beginning of ''New Jedi Order''. She's bitter that her mother's work kept both her and Han from their kids. Both her parents are at fault, but Jaina's more irritated with Leia because they share little in common beyond their force-sensitivity, which Leia also neglects, while Jaina closely resembles Han.
* WrenchWench: She enjoys tinkering with machinery.

[[folder:Mara Jade Skywalker]]
!!Mara Jade Skywalker
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mara_jade_skywalker_sw_7978.jpg]]
!!!'''Species:''' Human

Mara Jade was once the Emperor's deadliest assassin, but was cut adrift in the galaxy when her master died. Fixating on Luke Skywalker as the reason her life was ruined, she became obsessed with [[AvengingTheVillain killing him]] - only to save (and be saved by) him on several occasions, ultimately marrying him and becoming a member of the Jedi Council. They had one son, Ben Skywalker, born in the middle of the Yuuzhan Vong War. [[spoiler:Dies in ''[[Literature/LegacyOfTheForce Sacrifice]]'' at the hands of her nephew Jacen Solo after she discovered he had fallen to the Dark Side and was trying to corrupt Ben, causing her to try to assassinate him.]]
----
* ActionGirl: Mara Jade switches back and forth between being this status depending on who is writing her.
* ActionMom: Depending on the time period.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: She used to be a personal assassin for Emperor Palpatine, but a lot of her targets were genuinely corrupt people, and she would occasionally even bend the rules of her occupation to help others.
* AntiHero: During the Thrawn Trilogy, she originally only worked with Luke because she had to in order to survive and was still planning to kill him later on. Even after her Heel-Face Turn, she still occasionally falls back into her assassin mindset.
* AntiVillain: At the same time, the only thing that ever made her an antagonist at all was Palpatine's curse over her. Her personal vendetta against Luke is out of a desire to end a vision that has been haunting her for five years.
* TheApprentice: She was originally an apprentice for Emperor Palpatine. In her early years in the Jedi Order, she was in a reciprocal apprenticeship with Kyle Katarn.
* BackToBackBadasses: When she fights alongside Luke.
* BettyAndVeronica: She's the Veronica to Callista's Betty.
* BrainwashResidue: Left when Palpatine died.
* BrokenBird: ''Hoo boy''. Taken from her family by the Emperor, who probably had them killed, and indoctrinated and turned her into his personal assassin. The one mission she fails, killing Luke Skywalker, comes back to bite her hard when Luke subsequently triggers Vader's HeelFaceTurn and killing of the Emperor to protect his son. Oh, and the Emperor was in telepathic contact with Mara at the time and showed her a false vision of what happened (Vader and Luke turning on the Emperor together) to say "This is all your fault," with the vision tormenting her practically nightly for five years to ensure that eventually she kills Luke as vengeance on Vader from beyond the grave. She loses her power and prestige, her home and sense of purpose, and spends five years bouncing from meaningless job to meaningless job, often having to take off when her latent Force abilities awaken and the visions of the Emperor return, and she fears to let anyone get close. Then she meets Luke Skywalker and discovers that her existence has been a lie, and everything she ever believed was wrong. Creator/TimothyZahn picked her name [[MeaningfulName for a reason]].
* CombatPragmatist: As much as Kyle Katarn. Uses a lightsaber, blasters, flechette cannons, and explosives to dispatch enemies. Also has Light and Dark Side powers.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She starts out very cold towards Luke, actually wanting to kill him, but gradually warmed up to him, and along the way, they fell in love.
* DeadpanSnarker: [[IShallTauntYou She also uses snark as a tactic to keep her foes off-balance]].
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Played with, as she often switched with Leia or Han for the role, but for a good chunk of the post-ROTJ stories she has almost as much focus as Luke does. This can most clearly be seen in ''The Thrawn Trilogy'' where her actions lead directly to the defeat of the BigBadEnsemble.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Mara doesn't like people thinking she needs help, especially not when she's dying horribly.
* FieryRedhead: Her red hair is her most striking feature and she's got a bit of a temper when push comes to shove.
* GoodCounterpart: To Lumiya. Both served as the Emperor's Hand(s), but Mara became a Jedi Master while Lumiya became a Sith Lord.
* HappilyMarried: To Luke, for many years.
* HeelFaceTurn: Used to be the Emperor's Hand.
* TheImmune: Downplayed, but when she is infected with a virus that killed everyone else who received it, her force powers are able to keep it at bay.
* InHarmsWay: In her own words she enjoys fights and challenges, the few times when her life has been at leisure, she's been miserable.
* JadeColoredGlasses: Large part of her backstory.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: It's difficult to show her as gentle and motherly, almost angelic, as opposed to temperamental, but when it works, it's absolutely ''adorable''.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:By Jacen Solo in ''Sacrifice''.]]
* MamaBear: Please, don't try to hurt Ben if you value your life; she ''will'' go into an UnstoppableRage the moment she finds out.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Depending on the Writer, Mara Jade is the masculine girl to Luke Skywalker's feminine boy. When Timothy Zahn writes them, Luke is the sweeter, gentler one who prefers to avoid violence when possible, is always giving second and third chances, and is very open emotionally. Mara is more hostile to the world, blunt and direct and not about to let herself be jerked around, much more fiercely independent, and untrusting.
* MeaningfulAppearance: In ''Sacrifice'' we get the line "''…green and icy like a river frozen in its flood…''"
* MeaningfulName: Mara is Aramaic for "bitter", which is one of her primary characteristics in ''Literature/TheThrawnTrilogy''; also see JadeColoredGlasses above. Jade is also a precious stone that's best known for being used to decorate the palaces of Emperors in Ancient China, which is appropriate for a woman who started her career posing as a courtesan in the Emperor's palace on Coruscant. "Jade" is also archaic English slang for a woman, or specifically a bitter, cast-aside woman.
* OppositesAttract: Luke leans towards TheQuietOne and MartialPacifist, while Mara's a FieryRedhead.
* PlayerCharacter: In the ''VideoGame/DarkForcesSaga'' game ''Mysteries of the Sith'', she takes over as the main protagonist starting with level 5.
* ProfessionalKiller: What she was under the Emperor.
* PunchClockVillain: As the Emperor's Hand she was like this. Despite working for him the books make very clear she had no real malice or joy in killing people.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: ''Allegiance'' and ''Choices of One'' have Mara bend the Empire's laws to help those who are not truly enemies of the Empire. She reflects that sometimes, it's nice to be a law unto herself.
* SecretCharacter: She can be unlocked in ''Masters of Teräs Käsi'' by defeating all opponents in team mode after holding a specific button combination, or in the Wii port of ''VideoGame/TheForceUnleashed'' just by entering her name as a password.
* SignificantGreenEyedRedHead: Mara is one of the most prominent characters in ''Legends'', figuring heavily into multiple story arcs, having her own spin-off comic, and eventually becoming Luke's other half from ''New Jedi Order'' forward. Her most distinctive physical features are her red-gold hair and green eyes.
* SpyCatsuit: Her signature costume.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Mara can come across as cold and abrupt, and can be a very difficult woman to be close to. Those she ''does'' allow in find that she can actually be very loving and compassionate.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Has this with Vader whenever she has to work with him--there's absolutely no love lost between them.
* {{Troll}}: She's not above messing with her niece by giving her the wrong coordinates to a meet-up, when Jaina's flying on auto-pilot in a trance (though Jaine did have [=R2=] with her, and he knew the proper coordinates, so she's only delayed for a short time).
* UndyingLoyalty: There are very few people she allows past her [[SugarAndIcePersonality barrier of indifference]], but she will protect those she deems worthy of such with her life.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type A; it mostly balances out once's she married, but in no way does she ever become a type B.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Once she truly lets her guard down around Luke, she will do just about anything to protect him.
* WhatIsThisFeeling: When Mara starts interacting with Luke and experiences his kindness she becomes confused by how she feels hesitant to kill him and begins to wonder if he's using some sort of Jedi mind control.

The main character of the ''VideoGame/DarkForcesSaga'', Kyle started as an Imperial soldier before finding out that the Empire was behind the death of his father, [[HeelFaceTurn after which he defected and became a mercenary]] serving the Rebellion and later the New Republic against the Empire, especially when it came to tasks of infiltration and sabotage, as his inside knowledge of the layout of Imperial ships and bases gave him an advantage. Kyle eventually became a Jedi and was charged with the task of defending the legendary Valley of the Jedi on Rusaan and trained several Jedi Knights. Following the formation of the Jedi Council, Kyle became one of the main leaders of the Jedi Order, fighting in the Yuuzhan Vong War, Second Galactic Civil War, and the war against the Lost Tribe of Sith.

See the ''Characters/DarkForcesSaga'' page for an entry containing game tropes.
----
* TheAce: Just like Luke Skywalker before him, Kyle is primarily self trained. However, that didn't stop him from defeating a total of ''seven'' Dark Jedi in a relatively short span of time, one of whom was a Jedi Master in the original Jedi Order. At one point, shortly after beginning training at the Academy on Yavin IV, Kyle left the life of a Jedi behind, which resulted in his skills atrophying over time. However, when the next crisis with Desann arose, Kyle took up the blade again, quickly regained his lost skills, and defeated him. His skills with the blade were such that Luke ended up making him the Order's Battlemaster. Kyle is one of the few Force Users in the series who displays the ability to easily utilize abilities from both the Light and Dark Sides of The Force, resulting in him being one of the most skilled Masters in the New Jedi Order, with Luke trusting him to lead a team to defeat Darth Caedus and Caedus himself acknowledging Kyle's skills.

* DeadpanSnarker: One of the lesser ones in the series (not that that's saying much) mostly because he's fairly quiet, but definitely there.

* HeelFaceTurn: Brought about by learning of his father's death at the hands of the Empire, although he had been having doubts about it even before then.
* LaserBlade: Started out with Qu Rahn's green lightsaber in ''Jedi Knight'', then a yellow one (courtesy of [[spoiler:Yun]]), and finally a blue one he built himself in Outcast and Academy.
* MadeOfIron: Kyle survived being impaled by a lightsaber through the chest (and then ''having an infection get a hold of that wound'') during the ''Literature/LegacyOfTheForce'' saga.
* MasterSwordsman: To the point that he holds the title Jedi Battlemaster. It's the most obvious in ''Jedi Academy'' when he fights alongside Jaden.
* TheMentor: To Jaden Korr and Rosh Penin.
* MookHorrorShow: A New Republic Intelligence operative named Hantor Loftus once recommended that Kyle not be sent on any more missions, since a raid on an Imperial base he carried out had only left one terrified survivor that was too traumatized by witnessing Kyle in action to provide any information.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After [[spoiler: killing Maw in anger.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In ''Outcast'', [[spoiler: he returns to the Valley of the Jedi in order to regain his powers to fight Desann. By doing so, he allowed Desann to follow him, reach the Valley and use the Force Nexus to power him up and create the Reborn.]]
* OneManArmy: Can tear through legions of stormtroopers and Dark Jedi effortlessly.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When Desann and Tavion [[spoiler: apparently kill Jan]].
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: During the events in ''Mysteries of the Sith'', he falls victim to the Dark Force Nexus in the Temple on Dromund Kaas. Mara manages to pull him out of it.
* SwordAndGun: Uses his lightsaber and Bryar Blaster together.
* TheWorfEffect: Suffers from this in ''Fury'' when Darth Caedus defeats him in battle. Although getting struck from behind by a large speeder and flung into a lightsaber would give anyone this.

He ended up destroying a entire system, accidentally murdering his brother in the process, before being redeemed by Han. He continued to be aggressive in his duties as a Jedi, often conflicting with Luke on the best way for Jedi to operate, before eventually coming around to Luke's point of view halfway throughout the Yuuzhan Vong War. Now he is a respected member of the Jedi Council, albeit one who often favors more direct and aggressive solutions.

He realizes what a disaster it would be if the Jedi acted like that and changed his mind, throwing all of his support behind Luke and doing his best to stop Jaina from falling any deeper into the dark.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Until about half-way through the ''Literature/NewJediOrder''. He's mellowed out a lot since then.
* KarmaHoudini: Considered this by many people in-universe, especially in the Imperial Remnant. It ultimately ends up not to be true, though, as he becomes TheAtoner.
* LaserBlade: Uses a purple bladed lightsaber, though sources have been inconsistent as to whether it's gold, silver, or red.

Former [=CorSec=] officer on Corellia, Corran became a member of [[Literature/XWingSeries Rogue Squadron]] after joining the Rebel Alliance, taking part in many important events during the war. He eventually learned of his Jedi heritage, and became a full time Jedi once peace with the Imperial Remnant was established. Married to Mirax Terrik Horn, with whom he has two children, Valin and Jysella, who also become Jedi Knights.
----
* AcePilot: He flew with Rogue Squadron, and managed to stay alive against Wedge and Gavin Darklighter when they were unaware of his identity.
* AncestralWeapon: His first lightsaber, which belonged to his grandfather.
* BashBrothers: With Luke a few times, once they work out their issues.
* BestFriend: One of his is the BadassPacifist Caamasi Elegos A'Kla. When Elegos is killed by the Yuuzhan Vong, Corran kills Shedao Shai in a duel.
%%* BornDetective
* ColdSniper: He plays one very well during an undercover mission in ''Isard's Revenge'', and also has a tendency to be depicted this way at least a little bit in the Allston novels.
* CombatPragmatist: He asks Luke if he will be teaching combat training to Jedi at the academy, to which Luke answers that he would be teaching lightsaber combat. Corran notes that this isn't what he asked and adds that there are other techniques that can be used to less lethally subdue and opponent. He also demonstrates this trope by winning his duel with Luke by going SwordAndFist on it.
* DatingCatwoman: His relationship with Mirax can be seen as this, given how he's an ex-cop and she's a smuggler, especially seeing as how their respective fathers were on opposite sides of the law as well.
* DeadpanSnarker: Corran is pretty equal to Luke in this regard.
* EnergyAbsorption: He is one of the few Jedi to have a natural talent for this, and can use the energy he absorbs to do things he normally can't, like [[MindOverMatter telekinesis]].
* FailedASpotCheck: A big one in "I, Jedi". As part of their plan to get rid of Exar Kun, he turns up at one of Kun's temples to taunt him and get him angry enough to rush into the recruits' trap. Trouble is, as Kun's a Dark Side spirit Corran's sure he can't affect the physical world. But Kun can, as he demonstrates when he uses the Force to destroy all Corran's explosives. Corran has a split second to realise he'd unknowingly seen the Dark Lord do this to the Jedi Holocron previously before Kun [[MindOverMatter telekinetically]] [[CurbStompBattle kicks the crap out of him]].
%%* FairCop
* HappilyMarried: To Mirax. His reason for becoming a Jedi, at first, was to find her when she was kidnapped.
* HeroicBSOD: He spends most of ''Literature/FateOfTheJedi'' in this state after both his children go insane.
* HyperAwareness: He's an ex-detective and a Jedi Master. Kinda comes with the territory.
* ItsPersonal: With Shedao Shai, come ''Dark Tide: Ruin''. So personal, he fears he's going to the Dark Side and leaves the Jedi.
* JustAMachine: Averted, he's one of the few Rogue pilots to treat his astromech droid Whistler as a person (even Wedge casually wiped the memory of his droid at one point) and half the crazy piloting stunts he pulls off in the X-Wing books are because he's got Whistler helping him in ways other pilots would never think to use their droids for.
* LaserBlade: Uses a dual-phased lightsaber, allowing him too switch his blade length between a normal sized 1.3 meter silver blade and a 3 meter purple blade.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Iella, his former partner back when he was a detective. They constantly snark at each other, but are also very close, and aside from one instance which both recognize was just hormones under pressure, are very happily married to others.
* MasterOfIllusion: Another one of his natural skills, Corran is very good at [[JediMindTrick Jedi Mind Tricks]], which extends to making his target think they see things that aren't there. Also to help Tionne [[MundaneUtility see how she’d look with different hair]].
* MasterSwordsman: Definitely not to the same level as Luke (not that that's saying much), but he proves against countless Yuuzhan Vong and later Sith that he's certainly no slouch with the blade.
* TheMentor: He has trained at least one Jedi, Raltharan, to Knighthood, and helped train Tahiri Veila.
* NeverTellMeTheOdds: He's a Corellian Rogue Squadron pilot and Jedi. Odds are for other people.
* NonuniformUniform: Rather than the normal brown robes that other Jedi wear, Corran wears green ones in keeping with the Corellian Jedi tradition.
** Also true in his Rogue Squadron days. While most of the unit was painted in Rogue Squadron red, his fighter was [=CorSec=] green. This is because he never officially signed over his fighter to the New Republic. Same goes for the green flightsuit he wears compared to the traditional orange one.
* PapaWolf: So much so that when his children are imprisoned by Daala, he is very, very careful not to go to the Dark Side.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Corran is only 5'4". Pilots tend to be short to fit better into the cockpit.
* SarcasticDevotee: He's this to Wedge and Luke. He has enormous respect for them, but will still constantly question them if he thinks they're wrong, and take any opportunity to snark at them.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: As a Corellian Rogue Squadron pilot and Jedi, Corran couldn't epitomize this trope more if he tried. That being said, he certainly does respect the law...he's just very willing to dance in the grey areas once in a while.
* SelectiveSqueamishnessSuppression: In ''[[Literature/JediAcademyTrilogy I, Jedi]]'', Corran (a former detective) is able to look at a man who had been burned to death and calmly point out what's strange about the body, while Luke winces and the other Jedi-in-training are starkly horrified. Corran later is extremely shaken up when he's hit by the "disturbance in the Force" caused by Kyp destroying Carida, even running outside and throwing up. Given that said disturbance in the Force was caused by the ''destruction of a planet'', and that said disturbance caused Corran to witness the horrifying deaths of the people there pretty much firsthand, it's actually understandable.
%%* SuperCop
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: An interesting example, since he firmly believes that the law is ''usually'' right...but when it comes down to it, he'll choose Good every time.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Luke, once they work out their issues; Corran is always one of Luke's biggest supporters, and more than once gets riled up at Kyp's lack of respect for him.
* WeaksauceWeakness: He comes from a line of Jedi somewhat infamous for being unable to use telekinesis. He'll whine about it when other Jedi use telekinesis against him in lightsaber sparring sessions since he can neither sense the attack coming nor counter it.
* ZeroApprovalGambit: Does this after the [[Literature/NewJediOrder Battle of Ithor]], taking the blame for the planets destruction in order to spare the Jedi Order any more damage in public opinion.

Youngest child of Han and Leia, Anakin was viewed as the most powerful Knight in the New Jedi Order, and Luke considered him his most likely successor. 574* TheAce: To such a ridiculous extent that ''everyone'' had high expectations for him and was expecting him to grow up to become a major player in the New Jedi Order. Even both of his siblings considered him to have been different from them, to have been special. As the grandson of TheChosenOne, Anakin's connection to The Force was strong from the start and numerous older Jedi and Sith, such as Luke and Palpatine, acknowledged this. He inherited his grandfathers' skills with both machines and piloting. His skill allowed him to naturally use advanced Force techniques, such as Battle Meditation, which had been lost for years. He's a skilled enough duelist to wield two blades at once an he was the first Jedi to discover a way to sense the Yuuzhan Vong through the Force. 735[[caption-width-right:300:''"He was born to be a legend."'']]
-->''"Before I got this scratch, it was easy to believe in my own invincibility. I was arrogant enough to think of myself as perfect. That's a trap Kyp, Wurth, Octa, and others in his cabal are falling into. They think that because they've not been hurt, they can't be hurt. That's not an illusion I harbor anymore."''

An arrogant young Jedi Knight who was part of Kyp Durron's aggressive faction very early in the Yuuzhan Vong war. His own failures and battles against the Vong humbled him, and he turned away from Durron and began supporting Luke's faction. After the Mission to Myrkr, he began investigating rumors that Jacen Solo was alive. He found him seemingly serving the Yuuzhan Vong and was captured, but discovered it was a trick so Jacen could convince the World Brain of the Vong shaped Coruscant to switch sides. Ganner held off the Yuuzhan Vong long enough for Jacen to do so and escape, in a HeroicSacrifice that is regarded as one of the greatest moments in the ''Franchise/StarWarsLegends'' canon.
----
* BadassBoast: One that has yet to be equaled in the EU:
-->'''Nom Anor''': There are thousands of warriors out here. You are only one man!
-->'''Ganner''': I am only one Jedi.
-->'''Nom Anor''': YoureInsane
-->'''Ganner''': No. I am Ganner. This threshold is mine. I claim it for my own. Bring on your thousands, one at a time or all in a rush. I don't give a damn. None shall pass.
* BecomingTheMask: For most of his life, Ganner was a conflicted GlorySeeker, trying to fight his own "glory sickness" and being fearful of not living up to what he thinks he is supposed to be — a hero. It is not until the events of ''Traitor'' that he finally learns his lesson, with Jacen's help, and makes his choice: he accepts his role as a sidekick, buying time for what Jacen has to do. His YouShallNotPass DyingMomentOfAwesome is the direct result, earning his title of hero among the everyone in the galaxy. Even the Yuuzhan Vong, who killed him, start ''worshiping'' him as the guardian of the underworld.
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from an arrogant glory seeker to a humble Jedi who sacrificed his life to save someone he didn't even like because he knew Jacen's survival would restore hope to the New Republic.
* DangerSense: {{Averted}}, unlike most Jedi. According to Jacen, Ganner has the DangerSense of a mynock and he walks into several traps during the series.
* DissonantLaughter: During his HeroicSacrifice.
* DoNotGoGentle: His DyingMomentOfAwesome elevates him to MemeticBadass status ''in-universe.''
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: Regarded so by everyone in universe: the Yuuzhan Vong eventually elevate him to their pantheon of gods as the gatekeeper of the dead due to it, and the Jedi regard him as one of their greatest heroes.
* GlorySeeker: He got over it following his failure on Garqi against one Yuuzhan Vong warrior. He still struggled with the urge to try be a hero, but kept it in check for the most part.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Received a nasty one on the left side of his face when fighting a Yuuzhan Vong for the first time. He kept it to remind himself what his arrogance could cost him.
* HeroicSacrifice: Perhaps the most famous and [[DyingMomentOfAwesome badass]] sacrifices in Legends, if not Star Wars.
* HeroicWannabe: He struggled to resist this, but before his HeroicSacrifice, he realized that his need to play the hero could be one of his greatest strengths, and used it against the Yuuzhan Vong by tempting them into coming at him one at a time in honorable combat.
* LaserBlade: Used a yellow bladed lightsaber, which was destroyed by the Yuuzhan Vong when he was captured. During his LastStand, he used Anakin's lightsaber, which Vergere had managed to get to Jacen, who passed it onto Ganner.
* LastStand: Holds off legions of Yuuzhan Vong before finally killing them and [[TakingYouWithMe himself.]]
* MindOverMatter: He was an expert in using telekinesis.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Before he gets a reality check during his first duel with a Yuuzhan Vong.
* TookALevelInKindness: After ridding himself of his arrogance.

The third was the blade of a insane clone known as Alpha, who destroyed Jaden's second lightsaber. 1042* AbortedArc: Anakin has a vision in ''Conquest'' of her as a half-Yuuzhan Vong DarkMessiah, and following the events of that book she pretty much has the "half-Yuuzhan Vong" part down, and it's pretty heavily hinted in ''The Final Prophecy'' that this is still a possible future. It never comes up again after that book, even when she goes dark, and her Yuuzhan Vong nature gets a few cursory mentions in ''Dark Nest'' before being dropped nearly altogether in ''Legacy of the Force'' and ''Fate of the Jedi'', despite being a ''very'' prominent aspect of her personality before that.

Her father and mother had rescued the injured Tusken Sliven, who thanked them by teaching them how to fight with a gaderffii staff, but Sliven's tribe witnessed their sparring and mistook it for their tribesman being attacked.

* AcePilot: She is a crack shot and capable fighter.
* BettyAndVeronica: played with in the Rogue Squadron quadrilogy with the love triangle between her, Erisi Dlarit, and Corran Horn.
** Initially, Mirax is set up as the Veronica to Erisi's Betty. She's the kind of outlaw Corran used to jail for a living, her father is someone his father ''did'' jail, and her knee-jerk reaction upon learning his identity is that she should've left him to die out in space. Erisi, meanwhile, is a law-abiding fellow pilot in Corran's squadron who at this point hasn't been shown to be anything but friendly and supportive. However;
** Mirax and Corran get over their initial hostility fairly quickly (with a little help from Wedge Antilles). The fact that like Corran, Mirax is a Corellian who [[YouCantGoHomeAgain Can't Go Home Again]], that she's a sister in all but name to Wedge and has been an ally to Rogue Squadron since before most of its pilots were in it, and that her social class isn't far from his, all end up making her an unlikely GirlNextDoor of sorts to him. Meanwhile, Erisi, as time goes by, shows more and more or a RichBitch side to her, as well as a nasty possessive streak that leads her to bribe and threaten Mirax to stay away from Corran. [[spoiler:And then she turns out to be an Imperial spy who very nearly gets Corran killed and does get him jailed and tortured for weeks.]]
* CoolStarShip: The ''Pulsar Skate''.
* DaddysGirl: Has a very close relationship with her father, despite their occasional differences (the biggest one being her choice of husband). Probably due in part to her mother dying when she was very young.
* DeadpanSnarker: Oh yes. A trait she shares with Mara Jade, which quickly leads Luke Skywalker and Corran Horn to agree that the two should never meet.
* {{Determinator}}: Corran wants to postpone having kids until the campaign he's currently engaged in against the elusive Invid pirates has finished. Mirax agrees. She then promptly offers her services and her extensive underworld contacts to New Republic Intelligence in the hopes of finding the Invids and ending the campaign as quickly as possible. [[spoiler:She gets captured in the process, but since this is what drives Corran to finally put serious effort into developing his Jedi abilities, then using them to infiltrate and bring down the Invids and free Mirax, it all works out in the end]].
* HappilyMarried: With Corran Horn. As of the Legacy of the Force era, they have been for about forty years.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Wedge, since Booster pretty much adopted him after his parents died.
* LovableRogue: Her basic character type, much like many others in Star Wars. She's a criminal (a second generation one at least), but not a particularly violent one. She's also a patriot who maintains a lifelong relationship with the Rebel Alliance/New Republic. Her ship often smuggles supplies for them or their allies, and her criminal connections frequently help them in moments of difficulty.
* MafiaPrincess: Downplayed. She avoids both stereotypical versions of this trope - she was never sheltered or kept unaware from what her father was doing, but she wasn't groomed to take over his organization either (except temporarily when he went to prison). In the end she carves out a separate place for herself as a smuggler in a more niche market than his, specializing in high-end antiquities. That said, she was still doted on by her father and all his crewmen while growing up, and remains perfectly willing to invoke his name as a quick way to send potential troublemakers running for cover.
* MamaBear: She manages to knock out a Yaka captain, who's several feet taller than her and much more physically imposing, after finding he had hung her children who had been frozen in carbonite on his office wall.
* ReformedCriminal: Only officially. After the New Republic takes Coruscant and becomes the official government of the galaxy, she opens up a legitimate shipping line. She still returns to smuggling periodically to assist the New Republic when it comes under attack. She also offers Corran a glimpse of a second, far more profitable set of books for her shipping business, just in case you thought she was operating ''entirely'' out of the goodness of her heart.
