!! Edge Maverick
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/DaisukeKishio (Japanese), Creator/MatthewMercer (English)
[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/starocean4_edgemaverick.png]]

A young man in the SDF, chosen to serve aboard the Calnus alongside his childhood friend, Reimi. He has a long-standing rivalry and friendship with the Captain of the Aquila, Crowe. He is made the acting Captain of the Calnus and sent out to scout this section of the Universe.
----
* AccidentalPervert: A RunningGag in this game, courtesy of Reimi. Interestingly enough, he calls her out for getting pissed in one case.[[note]] Reimi found Meracle in bed with him, and she gave him an affectionate-yet-innocent "good morning" lick on the cheek. However, she took it the wrong way, even though Edge was just as shocked as she was.[[/note]]. In the other incidents, her reaction is a bit more understandable, even if it was still a misunderstanding.
* BigBrotherMentor: Faize looks up to him and strives to be like him.
* TheCaptain: Of the Calnus.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Even when he's in the midst of a BSOD, he can't stand by and not help someone.
* CombatMedic: He's mostly a combat specialist but he can learn a few healing abilities.
* CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler:Averted. He was surprised to learn that he was a Seed of Hope, but wasn't really all that upset about it. Instead he thinks that it's awesome, and says as much late in the game. Of course, it helps that he doesn't have any traumatic memories associated with his abilities.]]
* CustomUniform: It's a heavy armor prototype that he volunteered to test. It explains why he's one of the toughest characters in the party.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: A soldier that gains the ability to use symbology. [[spoiler: It's later revealed that he's a Seed of Hope; he had powers all along.]]
* FashionableAsymmetry: Sleeveless armor, arm guard on left; presumably there's a CustomUniform reason for this.
* TheHero: He's the one that insists on helping the people they find even if it conflicts with the SRF official mission, which, by the way, he undertook for the same reason: saving the people of Earth.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Edge plays this straight, despite the majority of the SRF using energy rifles. The game gives several reasons for this:
** 1). The first creatures encountered in the game possess natural defenses against the weapons used by most of the SRF, as they are able to detect the electromagnetic fields (and possibly generate such fields as well) generated by the rail guns used by the SRF, and thus are able to evade and/or deflect the projectiles. However, since swords and other "low-tech" weapons don't rely on such things, they are much more effective.
** 2). As explained by the [[AllThereInTheManual in-game encyclopedia]], Edge is also a [[ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy lousy shot]], and thus finds blades more useful in a fight. [[spoiler: The reason he can't hit anything with a ranged weapon is because - as a Seed of Hope- his reaction time is so quick that he instinctively aims at the spot where the enemy is ''going'' to be (instead of where the enemy ''is'') and miss. (Note: This may be a mistranslation as that's what you're ''supposed'' to do with ranged weapons. It would make more sense if Edge aimed right at his target instead of leading it. That, or he overcompensates in his lead.)]]
** 3). He [[DoesntLikeGuns views guns as unreliable]] because of the above, and a traumatic incident in his backstory. Edge lost his father at a young age; killed by an old wartime bio-weapon when they were scavenging on the surface. Edge tried to drive it off with the gun he was carrying, but was unable to hit it due to his piss-poor aim. However, when he used a knife to defend himself from the creature, he was able to fight it off, though too late to save his father.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: Edge suffers a pretty extensive breakdown when he realizes that his actions caused the destruction of an alternate Earth. He directly feels responsible for it, and begins to suffer depression as a result, even if it wasn't intentional.]] Pretty major case of BSOD at that, too; Reimi is forced to take over as captain because Edge has become unfit for duty. Edge says very little in cutscenes and says nothing at all after a victory in battle or leveling up. It isn't until [[spoiler: Reimi is afflicted with the [[TakenForGranite stone sickness]]]] that he finally starts to snap out of it.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Edge deciding to give away warp technology to a [[TheFifties 1950s Earth]] science facility led by an obvious MadScientist. Even everyone else in the party told Edge that it wasn't a good idea. [[MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds It unsurprisingly didn't end well for everyone involved.]]
* HotBlooded: Edge has a tendency to jump straight into things, to the point he comes across as reckless IdiotHero to anyone who doesn't know him (those that do just think he's just like that). This is somewhat balanced out by his ability to think fast on his feet and rapidly adapt to changing situations. [[spoiler: There's a reason for this. As a Seed of Hope, one of Edge's abilities is "Instantaneous analytical perception", meaning his brain doesn't need to spend time processing or sorting information allowing him to react to situations much, ''much'' faster than a normal human. This probably explains his massive HeroicBSOD as well; while the rest of his team were still trying to process what just happened, Edge got hit with it all at once.]]
* TheLeader: Initially it was because he was the designated leader but as the ship fills up with people unaffiliated with the SRF or Earth in anyway, he leads based on charisma.
* LargeHam: Being a hotblooded individual, he's gung-ho about the group's mission and very expressive about his opinions (except during his HeroicBSOD).
* LightEmUp: He gains the ability to use low to mid level Light Symbols.
* MagicKnight: Combines physical combat with healing and Light magic.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler: When his actions result in the destruction of a parallel Earth, he has a period of immense guilt.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Not only does he frequently deadpan the insanity of his other party members (and Welch) but [[spoiler:he's the only one to realize the sheer horror of what he did to the Parallel Universe Earth]].
* SleevesAreForWimps: His SRF spacesuit is sleeveless and he can remove the left arm guard if needs to ([[TwentyFourHourArmor though he never does in game]]).
* SwordBeam: Edge's Aura Spark skill is channeled through his sword.
* ThanksForTheMammary: He accidentally grabs Meracle's breast after waking up and [[BedmateReveal finding her in his bed, to his surprise]] during a PA. Reimi naturally [[NotWhatItLooksLike walks in and finds them in bed together]], with Meracle [[NotHelpingYourCase giving him one of her normal pecks on the cheek]], worsening his case. Reimi slaps him.
* TookALevelInJerkass: He became much more irritable after the [[spoiler: alternate Earth]] part of the game due to his HeroicBSOD. Thankfully he managed to return to his old self in [[spoiler: Roak]] through the PowerOfFriendship.
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: [[spoiler: Edge hooks up with Reimi in the game's ending, if you have high enough affinity with her. The scene before their FirstKiss includes how they've been spent years supporting each other as friends]].
* WideEyedIdealist: He goes into space to help others and is disdainful of politics. Part of his character development is dropping the wide-eyed aspect, becoming simply TheIdealist and making them work in reality.

The childhood friend of both Edge and Crowe, Reimi is also a crewman in the SDF. She is chosen to accompany Edge when he is made the acting Captain of the Calnus.
----
* ActionGirl: She is a female crewman in the SDF. She wasn't meant to be an active fighter, but [[ArchaicWeaponForAnAdvancedAge her skills with a bow became necessary]] once the [[GunsAreWorthless aliens proved to be immune to the SRF railguns]].
* BadassInDistress: [[spoiler:Reimi is captured by the US Army shortly after the crew lands on Earth after traveling through a wormhole in a black hole.]]
* BigSisterInstinct: After Lymle joins the crew, Reimi takes it upon herself to look after the younger girl.
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler: Implied. She ultimately recovered, but when she was eight years old Reimi found out exactly what lethal radiation poisoning feels like.]]
* CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler: As a Seed of Hope she has automatic immunity to any and all diseases. She initially considered this BlessedWithSuck because of childhood trauma but a heart-to-heart with Edge convinced her otherwise.]]
* CustomUniformOfSexy: Her distinct SRF suit is the light armor version of the SRF standard. Hence her glass cannon status. Though one does have to wonder why it looks like a mini-skirt.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: [[spoiler: Her hatred of her Seed of Hope powers stems from a childhood incident where radiation poisoning killed off every one of her friends except her, as her genetically-enhanced immune system was able to adapt and fight it off, [[BodyHorror though not immediately]]. She confides in Edge that she wants to live a peaceful married family life like everyone else]].
* GlassCannon: She deals very high damage due to her high crit rate, but has low HP and only two melee techniques.
* KickChick: Flip-kicks the enemy into the air for her close range attack, and delivers [[RapidFireFisticuffs Rapid Fire Kicks]] for her ''Chaotic Blossoms'' special.
* LadyOfWar: Archery is considered a feminine form of combat in Japan and her special techniques sometimes invoke flower motifts, such as ''Chaotic Blossoms''.
* TheLancer: She is the offiical [[NumberTwo First Mate]] on the ship and she is also more levelheaded and rational than Captain Maverick.
* LongRangeFighter: She is a long-range combatant who uses bows as her weapon of choice.
* LoveInterest: She's Edge's love interest. Many of their PA involve their past and/or growing relationships.
* MsFanservice: While her uniform isn't that sexualized (save for showing her legs a bit) she still ends up being one of the biggest source of fanservice due to how often she ends up compromising situations with Edge, such as him [[ShowerOfAwkward walking on her in the shower more than once]]. [[MaleGaze The camera]] also sometimes zooms in on her backside when she wins a battle because she stores her bow behind her waist.
* NiceGirl: She's a kind girl with a demure and selfless personality who's always doing her best to look out after those around her. Edge is the only person who she regularly acts mad to, and that's due to her {{Tsundere}} feelings for him.
* RainOfArrows: A lot of Reimi's higher-level moves involve her raining down arrows, in particular Savage Sparrows.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: Fanservice scenes involving her always happen at her expense and she often ends up blaming Edge for what happened and [[UnprovokedPervertPayback slapping him]].
* StepfordSmiler: While she usually a bright demeanour, she privately has low self-esteem due to [[spoiler:the childhood trauma caused by her Seed of Hope powers]]. But she dislikes complaining or confiding her problems to others and keeps it all bottled up inside.
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: Reimi uses a bow. Unusually for the trope, the game takes steps to justify it: she took classes in both eastern and western archery as a curiosity and to distract herself from her DarkAndTroubledPast, and was initially on the ship as a BridgeBunny, not for her weapon skills. It's only after it's discovered that the alien wildlife is immune to the standard-issue railguns that she starts backing Edge up in the field.
* SurvivorGuilt: [[spoiler: She suffers from survivor guilt over being the only child to survive radiation poisoning due to her Seed of Hope. As if she didn't feel bad enough that her friends died, the parents of her dead friends kept traumatizing her by saying [[YouShouldHaveDiedInstead she should have died instead]]]].
* TeamChef: She's the one with the Cooking skill and serves as the crew's cook.
* {{Tsundere}}: She's a mild example of Dere-Dere for Edge. She's usually a NiceGirl but has a notable temper when it comes to him, but tends to chide him and even actively attack when he doesn't act the way she wants, especially when she thinks he's being an AccidentalPervert or [[ClingyJealousGirl getting close to other girls]].
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: [[spoiler: Edge hooks up with Reimi in the game's ending, if you have high enough affinity with her. The scene before their FirstKiss includes how they've been spent years supporting each other as friends]].

[[folder:Faize Sheifa Beleth ('''UNMARKED SPOILERS''')]]
!! Faize Sheifa Beleth
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MitsukiSaiga (Japanese), Creator/JasonLiebrecht (English), Davis Brooks (English, ''Anamnesis'')
[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/starocean4_faizebeleth.png]]

A young Eldarian chosen to accompany Edge as part of the joint Terran-Eldarian exploration of space. His superiors feel he has much to learn from Edge, and Faize himself often feels inferior to him.
----
* AlchemyIsMagic: He practices this and makes the alchemic stuff in the ship during crating.
* AntiVillain: After his FaceHeelTurn he becomes the extremist with a noble goal type.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Edge theorizes that the Grigori brainwashed him by using his kindness against him. In other words, he's trying to destroy the universe because he's too kind not to.
* AnIcePerson: Faize is a master of Water Symbols.
* CastingAShadow: He is a master of Dark Symbols.
* DishingOutDirt: Faize is a master of Earth Symbols.
* EyeColorChange: When [[SpaceElves Faize]] is subjected to a lot of stress, his LegoGenetics causes him to unconsciously suppress it. This is shown as his eyes turning red.
* FaceHeelTurn: When attempting to save his own people from being slaughtered, Faize accepts ultimate power from the [[CosmicHorror Missing Procedure and becomes the final boss, Apostle of Creation/Satanail.)]]
* FinalBoss: He's the Apostle of Creation/Satanail, and the final obstacle to stopping the EvilPlan.
* HeroicBSOD: He has a big one when his people are being slaughtered and his homeworld is destroyed. This causes him to accept the power of the Missing Procedure and become a bad guy.
* MagicKnight: Although his melee damage is decent, he doesn't learn any combat skills, so he's more of a symbologist.
* MeaningfulName: Beleth is the name of a fallen angel, who becomes a demon after trying to save the earth from destruction from the droves of humanity overrunning it.
* NiceGuy: He's polite, friendly and looks up to Edge as a hero. In the end, his fall from grace is what convinces Edge against technology sharing; if someone as nice as him can be corrupted by such actions, then it's too dangerous for anyone else.
* NonElemental: Faize is one of only two Symbologists to gain a non-elemental attack Symbol. His Reaping Spark Symbol causes significant damage in a respectable AOE with no risk of hitting an elemental resistance.
* OnlyMostlyDead: Depending on how you interpret his ending, he survived the destruction of Nox Obscurusis.
* OptionalPartyMember: An odd version, where after one playthrough you can choose to keep Faize in the party when he leaves during the story instead of getting Arumat, even though he turns out to be the final boss. Arumat remains there in the cutscenes, though.
* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: The death of a girl he met on Roak causes him to darken, and then it all goes downhill from there.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: His eyes turn red whenever he's trying (and failing) to suppress emotion.
* RoyalRapier: He uses one and his manner is more genteel than the other sword user, Edge, who is more brash.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Faize is given a scarf from a Roak shepherd girl he is smitten with and he believes it makes him look cool but Lymle thinks it makes him look horrible (due to jealousy). It becomes the catalyst for his FaceHeelTurn and later allows Lymle to realize that Faize and the Apostle of Creation are the same person.
* TheSmartGuy: An alchemist, and as an eldarian, he is more acquianted with the ship's technology than the rest of the crew.
* StepfordSmiler: The [[AllThereInTheManual in-game encyclopedia]] reveals that his emotional suppression is a side-effect from genetic modification. Tragically, this suppression indirectly causes his FaceHeelTurn.
* TheStoic: He is quiet, calm, polite and logical in his thinking [[NotSoStoic but a sufficient degree of stress puts him over the edge.]]
* ASinisterClue: The only left-handed party member eventually becomes the final boss.
* WalkingSpoiler: The fact that he leaves the party and ends up as the FinalBoss is a major spoiler.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: After he becomes the Apostle of Creation he believes the best thing for the universe is to be destroyed and then recreated to exclude sadness and pain, so no one will have to suffer and die like Faize's Eldarian brothers and sisters did.

[[folder:Lymle Lemuri Phi]]
!! Lymle Lemuri Phi
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MiyukiSawashiro (Japanese), Hunter [=MacKenzie=] Austin (English), Jules de Jongh (English, ''Anamnesis'')
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/starocean4_lymlephi.png]]

A child prodigy symbology user from the agrarian planet of Lymeris. She is seeking the cure to the illness that is slowly killing her grandfather. Lymle can summon Cerberus, both in and out of battle, and treats him like a pet.
----
* BlackMagicianGirl: She learns primarly attack magic or negative status aliments. Also, she can summon a fiend.
* BlowYouAway: Lymle is proficient with Wind Symbols. Strangely, she can use the highest level Wind Symbol, Tornado, but not the mid-level Wind Symbol.
* CharacterDevelopment: As she travels with the party, Lymle gradually begins opening up, becomes less spacy, and generally more mentally functional and healthy. [[spoiler: In her epilogue, she's become a symbology teacher and is finally able to show emotion, treating the audience to a genuine smile]]
* ChekhovsGun: At various parts in the game she can be seen drawing on the floor of the ship, for which she is scolded by Reimi. [[spoiler: These are symbols of power and prove essential during the final battle.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: When first introduced, Lymle lives in her own little world and never shows any sort of emotion. She's like this because [[spoiler: when she was 6 she accidentally opened a portal to the demon realm (read ''Hell'') and shut off all emotional outlets to protect herself from several decades' worth of hatred and fear in there.]] This was so severe that it froze her mental, emotional, and even ''physical'' growth. The villagers will tell you that she's a "Good Girl", and that's easy to see as she's thoughtful, very considerate of others, fearless and strong willed. However, she also craves attention and is emotionally dependent on others to a large degree.
* CreepyChild: She occasionally comes off as this because of her CreepyMonotone, [[TheStoic general lack of emotions]], and the fiery fiend she can summon on command.
* FluffyTamer: Cerberus was the one who [[spoiler:rescued her from the Demon Realm]], and since then she's treated him as her "Doggie". She even tied a pink bow to his tail!
* GlassCannon: She has the least HP and lowest defense, but her magic is very powerful, thus making her a SquishyWizard.
* MageSpecies: Lymle is one of a very small number of Lemurisian women who have symbols written on their DNA, enabling her to use symbology innately.
* MagicWand: She uses one for casting spells and throwing energy balls. [[spoiler: At the climax she proves that all she really needs is a nearby symbol.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: Lymle is 15, but physically and mentally stuck at the age of six due to the "little trip" mentioned above. [[spoiler: In her epilogue she's finally started to age again and is noticeably taller.]]
* PlayingWithFire: Her primary element in Symbology is fire: Fire bolts, Explosion etc. Cerberus is also covered in flames, making her special skills summoning him fire-based, as well. She is the only character who can use the ultimate Fire Symbol, Volcanic Burst.
* ShockAndAwe: Lymle is proficient with Thunder Symbols, and can use them up to mid-level.
* TheStoic: She rarely shows emotion on her face but her voice has inflections for despair or anger.
* SummonMagic: She can summon Cerberus from the underworld to attack her enemies.
* TokenMiniMoe: A tiny little girl with GirlishPigtails and a pink dress.
* {{Tsundere}}: Despite showing very little emotion, Lymle is this to Faize. Although she outwardly hates him and they argue often, they definitely share a connection. She cares very much about his well being, [[spoiler:especially late in the game when Faize disappears]].
--> '''Reimi''': "[[VitriolicBestBuds Only true friends would fight like that]]."
* VerbalTic: "Kay?" in English, "nanoyo" in Japanese.

A member of the Morphus, a race dedicated to justice and peace in the galaxy. A brilliant scientist, he has cybernetically modified his own body in order to be more effective in combat.
----
* ArmCannon: His primary weapon is a cannon on his right arm.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: His vast intelligence, amplifed by his cyborg body, enables him to make quick calculations either for the ship or monsters.
* TheBigGuy: Out of [[TheTeam the Calnus' crew]] he is the biggest, the broadest, he wears akin to armor, and he has a great deal of physical power.
* ChainsawGood: The Godslayer support mech is a ''giant'' chainsaw that attaches itself to Bacchus's arm Ash Williams-style.
* CovertPervert: His jaw drops when seeing Welch posing with cardboard drawings of a French maid outfit and a PE outfit (i.e. T-shirt and bloomers), and acting like the maid and little sister stereotypes.
* {{Cyborg}}: As part of an EmergencyTransformation, he shifted his conscious to a robotic body that was better suited for combat.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: He fears that he has become cold and logical as a result of his implants but Edge insists that he's still a great guy. After all, a soulless machine wouldn't gush about their wife or feel gulity for leaving her to fight the Grigori.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: He was pretty awesome before becoming a cyborg.
* GatlingGood: The Justice Saviour support mech has him pull out two enormous gatling guns from nowhere and blast enemies in a large radius.
* GeniusBruiser: He was a scientist pre-series and the transformation into a combat cyborg body was his idea.
* HappilyMarried: His wife is waiting for him back on EN-II and he feels like a horrible husband for leaving her side in order to save the universe. [[spoiler: His ending includes a scene where she tells him how silly he was for thinking that and implies that they are going to celebrate his return to a flesh and blood body with lovemaking.]]
* KillSat: The Irradiation skill is beams of red energy from the sky.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: The Force Breaker skill launches missiles from his back.
* MightyGlacier: His cyborg body is powerful but not nimble. He needs a jetpack for blindsiding.
* MoreDakka: When things get ugly and rockets, kill sats, laser cannons, chainsaws and elektro shocks are just not enough to get the job done, Bacchus whips out his two friends [[GatlingGood Justice and Saviour]] and goes wild.
* NonindicativeName: Bacchus. Named after the Roman god of getting drunk and partying; this Bacchus is the [[TheSpock exact opposite]].
* SeriousBusiness: Takes Welch's fanservice costumes A LITTLE too seriously.
* SpaceElves: He is a Morphus by birth, the same as Myuria, but that was before he caught a fatal disease and transferred his brain and spinal cord into a non-elven robotic body.
* TheSpock: Rational, focused, duty bound, speaks in a formal and technical manner etc. EXCEPT when dealing with [[CovertPervert fanservice stereotypes]].

A young alien girl who doesn't remember her past. She was a stowaway on an alien vessel that crashed on Earth, and was held captive at a government installation for years.
----
* ActionGirl: Unlike everyone else on this list, she fights with (almost) bare claws.
* AnimalMotif: Ears, tail, cuddling, we have a cat.
* {{Animorphism}}: Like all Lesser Fellpool, she can turn into a cat.
* BigEater: She tries to eat, amongst other things, the bunnies on Roak and ''Sarah''.
* CatGirl: She's a Fellpool, a race of humanoid with cat-features. She'd look human if not for the ears and tail.
* CuteBruiser:
--> '''Meracle:''' '''COMET IMPACT! SEE YAAAH!'' [[{{Cap}} * Inflicts 99999 damage on the enemy* ]]
* CuteLittleFangs: Part of the cat look is fangs.
* FragileSpeedster: She's very fast and agile but can't take hits.
* GenkiGirl: She cartwheels around the battlfield, performs superspeed zigzags during blindside, and is always active on the ship.
* IsItSomethingYouEat: Her first reaction when seeing a "bunny" in Roak is presuming it to be tasty. She does the same thing when she first meets the Featherfolk Sarah, whom she mistakes as a chicken.
* MyOwnGrampa: [[spoiler: Meracle adores a series of children's story-books called ''Lady Elena and the Feline Gourmand''. Her ending hints that, via time-traveling shenanigans, the books are based on Meracle's own adventures with Elena.]]
* NiceGal: Other than her culinary interest in Sarah, she's a friendly girl and quick to trust.
* TheNoseKnows: Her keen sense of smell aids the party on a number of occasions [[spoiler: such as the weakness in a barrier in the FinalBattle.]]
-->'''Meracle:''' My nose is well trained.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: A mildly disturbing case, as she doesn't look much older than 12 or 13, even if [[OlderThanTheyLook her profile says she's 16]]. This is Lampshaded by an NPC, who straight up tells her to [[PleasePutSomeClothesOn wear a full dress.]]
%%* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Of Pericci from the first ''Star Ocean''.
* VerbalTic: ''"Meow!"'' (English) or ''"~Mya!"'' (Japanese)
* WolverineClaws: As a cat person, claws are her primary weapons.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: She looks and acts like a prepubescent child but her profile says she's 16.

An enigmatic Morphus woman who is seeking Crowe for revenge. She aids Edge on several occasions, although she acts coldly towards him.
----
* ActionGirl: She is an active female Morphus soldier and unlike Bacchus, she doesn't have a combat cyborg body.
* BadassBookworm: She used to be a scientist before learning how to fight to seek revenge.
* BigBreastPride: She wears a skimpy outfit that shows off her buxom figure and poses in a manner that flaunt them. This seems to be part of her TheTease routine.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She has sizable breasts that are very exposed due to her {{Stripperiffic}} outfit and have plenty of JigglePhysics and [[MaleGaze camera shots]]. Edge eyes seem to wander to her chest when he talks to her and one piece of official artwork has him [[EatingTheEyeCandy blatantly ogling her breasts]] while a [[ACupAngst jealous Reimi pulls him away]].
* CastingAShadow: Myuria is a master of Dark Symbols.
* CoolBigSis: Towards the other women in the group: Meracle about romance and Reimi about her childhood [[spoiler: Seed of Hope]] trauma, etc.
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: In her appearance in a cutscene, she's depicted as a badass MagicKnight. Any players who tried to use her as this in manner were quickly disappointed as she's a SquishyWizard.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Initially cold to everyone but warms up to them by the end of the game. In regards to Edge, she teases him more.
* GlassCannon: She's a powerful symbologist but her staff is best suited as a staff instead of a spear where she can get hurt.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's caustic, tough and snarky, but she means well.
* JigglePhysics: Her breasts wobble all around the place even when she's standing still (as evidenced by the cutscene in which she's first fully revealed). This provides an answer to why Reimi keeps her assets so securely bound in place...
* HappilyMarried: In a flashback, there's a scene of them being randomly affectionate before the fatal attack.
* AnIcePerson: Myuria is a master of Ice Symbols.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Magic-wise, she's like an older, more mature and better-developed form of Lmyle.
* LostLenore: Her entire character revolves around her not having moved past her husband's death and seeking to avenge him.
* MagicStaff: She fires both her spells and energy bolts from it. She uses as a MartialArtsStaff too, [[CutscenePowerToTheMax but only during cutscenes]].
* MsFanservice: She is a beautiful woman in a {{Stripperiffic}} that has a busty figure with JigglePhysics. [[MaleGaze The camera specifically pans and rotates around her from the ground up, focusing on her butt and breasts before reaching her face during her victory poses]]. She's also TheTease and can be quite flirtatious towards others.
* NonElemental: Myuria is one of only two Symbologists to have any non-elemental spells. Her Extinction Symbol causes a large amount of damage surrounding the targeted enemy, while Divine Wave damages all enemies near Myuria.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy: Myuria has pink hair, while her late husband had blue hair.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: She's trying to kill Crowe because she thinks he's responsible for her husband's death.
* RedMage: Her offensive magic is slightly weaker than Lymle's, and Sarah has quite a few more nice healing and buffing spells Myuria doesn't have. However, Myuria's spell repertoire has a good mix of offensive and support spells and thus she is often the caster of choice for most players.
* ShockAndAwe: Myuria is a master of Lightning Symbols and is the only character who can use the ultimate Lightning Symbol, Plasma Cyclone.
* SpaceElves: Like all Morphus she has the PointyEars and [[MageSpecies does not need to tattoo herself to use Symbology]].
* {{Stripperiffic}}: The least covered up of the Calnus crew females, she wears little more than a top, bottom and gloves. [[spoiler: This makes for a greater contrast in her flashback where she is much more modest.]]
* TheTease: She teases Edge often, liking to call him "boy", invade his personal space and suggest for him to "[[SexForSolace comforts her]]". She's not actually interested and just wants to mess with him. When he teases back in retribution, she twists his ear.
-->'''Myuria:''' Don't tell a woman things you don't mean.
* YouKilledMyFather: The reason she wants to kill Crowe is she believes he killed her husband and she wants revenge.

A Featherfolk girl from the planet of Roak. The party saves her from being kidnapped at their first meeting.
----
* AllLovingHero: She doesn't do a single mean-spirited thing over the course of the whole game. Not even to those who want to eat or sacrifice her.
* AnAlienNamedBob: Sarah is a very "common" name for an alien, which stands out from the rest of the alien characters.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Just because she's the dizty healer doesn't mean she can't or won't summon a vortex or some lances of light to ruin your day.
* BespectacledCutie: Sarah is a ditzy girl who wears glasses to amplify her cuteness.
* BlindWithoutEm: This is a running gag and used to play up her ditziness.
* BlowYouAway: Sarah is a master of Wind Symbols.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: [[spoiler:When her abductors enter her inn room through her window, she was going to ''make tea for them'' until they kidnapped her.]] [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter Not exactly the greatest judge of character, is she?]]
-->'''Myuria:''' [[ObfuscatingStupidity Is she doing that on purpose?]]\
'''Bacchus:''' Sometimes I find myself truly hoping that is the case.
* DamselInDistress: In her introduction, she is almost kidnapped. [[spoiler:The kidnappers come back later and succeed. In her epilogue, she is chased by two cat girls who want to eat her. This time, [[DamselOutOfDistress she saves herself by flying.]]]]
* TheDitz: An air head for sure with all the times she misses the point and for thinking that she could fly between planets.
* {{Flight}}: Inverted with Sarah. She's the only one of her species who ''can't'' fly. [[spoiler: She learns in the end.]]
* GoodWingsEvilWings: The white, angelic kind. Another name for the Featherfolk is 'Sacred Wings'.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: She's very naive and is easy to trust people, which makes it easy for anyone with hostile intentions to trick or take advantage of her.
* IdiotHair: A very curly and feminine one. It definitely fits her ditzy personality.
* LamarckWasRight: [[spoiler:It was a widely held belief that she is an ancestor of Ioshua Jerand of the first ''Star Ocean''. Her dictionary entry and WordOfGod confirmed this: she's his paternal aunt. A [[DownplayedTrope downplayed example]], as Featherfolk as a whole are a MageSpecies and Sarah's spellset is fairly different from her niece and nephew's.]]
* LightEmUp: Sarah is a master of Light Symbols, and is the only character to use the ultimate Light Symbol, Sunflare.
* LightIsGood: When it is used by an AllLovingHero like her, it is.
* MacGuffinSuperPerson: In the Roak story-arc she is required for a VirginSacrifice that will revive a demon.
* NiceGirl: She's an AllLovingHero and very polite besides.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: It's subtly implied that she's not as ditzy as she appears though it's really hard to see.
* {{Seers}}: Sarah can see the future.
* ShockAndAwe: Sarah is proficient with Lightning Symbols, able to use them up to mid-level.
* YourDoorWasOpen: How ''did'' she manage get on board the Calnus without anyone noticing?
* WhiteMagicianGirl: A feminine lady who casts white magic and wields a polearm, but there is one exception. She's no one's LoveInterest.
* WingedHumanoid: She's a Featherfolk, a humanoid with large white feathery wings, but she's not capable of using them to fly.
* WingsDoNothing: She has huge wings but is described both by the game and in her own words as being incapable of flight. Bacchus examined her wings and found nothing wrong with them so there's nothing preventing her from flying, she just doesn't know how to get airborne. She can hop and glide, but can't get enough momentum to actually take off. [[spoiler:In her ending, she learns to fly while being chased by two [[CatGirl cat girls]], and neither of them is Meracle, surprisingly.]]

A member of the Eldarian military who displays nothing but contempt for civilians.
----
* AntiHero: Type III-the GoodIsNotNice type. While working with the other heroes he is a grumpy and hostile guy to them. [[spoiler: In the eplilogue he's transitioned to Type II-the Disney Antihero. He's still snarky and grumpy but now he goes to dangerous places to rescue people for its own sake.]]
* BadassLongRobe: Combined with a cool vest, he looks like a typical GrimReaper.
* BadassBoast: "Death himself has nothing to fear." This is said whenever he levels up.
* BigDamnHeroes: Twice; one for the heroes in a starship and [[spoiler: once in the epilogue for a random guy.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite his dark and fearsome appearance, he's a heroic guy at heart.
* DeadlyUpgrade: [[spoiler: Arumat's undergone extensive amounts of Gene modifications, effectively making him a SuperSoldier. However, this has also caused a breakdown in the structure of his cells.]]
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler: He refuses to get treatment for his condition, instead living out what time he has left as a fighter. It's his way for atoning for the men he's lost along the way.]]
* DishingOutDirt: Arumat is a master of Earth Symbols.
* DoomMagnet: [[spoiler: He's lost a lot of men over the years and he was the only survivor each time. This is why he calls himself "Death Himself".]]
* GoodIsNotNice: He comes across as scary, stoic, and slightly patronizing, but despite his efforts to hide his nature, he's deep down a decent guy. In one example, a highly appreciative Meracle is thanking him for saving her after she suffers an accident while playing. He coldly insists he was [[IWasJustPassingThrough Just Passing Through]].
* TheGrimReaper: His motif: robe, sycthe, bringer of death etc.
* HeroicRROD: [[spoiler: Arumat doesn't have long until the degradation of his muscular system turns fatal. He's well aware of it but keeps pursuing his self-destructive lifestyle]]
* HumanityIsInfectious: [[spoiler: His ending reveals that he has become much more openly heroic. Arumat blames humans, saying their behavior has rubbed off on him.]]
* MagicKnight: Unlike Faize who focuses on the magic part of being a MagicKnight, Arumat focuses more on close-range combat.
* MeaningfulName: His last name is "Thanatos", the Greek God of Death. It goes well with his thinking of himself as the incarnation of Death himself.
* SignificantAnagram: His first name is an anagram of "Trauma".
* OneManArmy: Arumat is a '''MONSTER''' in battle. He has the highest attack power in the game, high HP, and that scythe of his allows him to mow through multiple enemies at once. However, his defense stats are a little lower than Edge's.
* PlayingWithFire: Arumat is proficient with Fire Symbols, and also uses Fire in his Nether Strike attack.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Arumat wears an outfit that is largely colored plum purple and his default / cutscenes scythe has a glowing purple blade.
* SinisterScythe: Arumat, who sees himself as an aspect of Death, uses a gigantic scythe in battle. In fact, one of the first special attacks he comes with ''increases the size of his scythe.''
* SixthRanger: A clear cut case. He's a strong, aloof {{Anti Hero}} that the crosses paths with Edge and Co. a few times before (reluctantly) teaming up with them. When he does join, he starts with his BEAT system nearly maxed out, a number of combat skills already learned, and enough SP to max most of those skills. Finally, his starting equipment is likely better than what everyone else has equipped.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler: His entire squadron was wiped out years earlier after being attacked by an unknown enemy (later revealed to be the Phantoms). This happens ''again'' during the phantom's attack on Eldar.]] Yeesh!
* SurvivorGuilt: Arumat suffers from survivor's guilt [[spoiler: because on a number of occasions he was the SoleSurvivor in his squadron.]]
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Gamers were aware that due to how similar his skills are to [[spoiler:Faize, that Faize was not coming back from his absence from the party]].
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler: His deadly upgrade means his life is quickly coming to an end.]]

!Antagonists
[[folder:The Grigori]]
!! The Grigori

The game's primary antagonists. Sentient, stone-like beings created by the phenomenon called the Missing Procedure. Their goal is to destroy the universe and replace it with a new, lifeless one in accordance with the Missing Procedure's will. To that end, they induce unnatural evolution in any species they come into contact with, generating life energy that is then consumed by the Missing Procedure to gain the power it needs to destroy the universe.
----
* BigBad: Their actions and the cosmic threat they pose drive the events of the story.
* BlindIdiotTranslation: The second Grigori's name was supposed to be "Baraqiel" rather than "Barachiel", since the latter is not a fallen angel.
* TheCorruption: What the unnatural evolution they bestow on lifeforms amounts to. The Cardianon went from a primitive race to a highly advanced society in only 200 years because of the Grigori's influence, but they lost their home planet in the process and eventually devolved into crazy, vicious monsters, resulting in their extinction.
* EldritchAbomination: They come from another dimension, induce abnormal evolution with their mere presence, are described by the Morphus as "a form of sentient matter" and are not considered living beings, and transform into bizarre creatures by absorbing dead or living beings into themselves.
* FantasticRacism: They address all lifeforms as "inferior beings".
* HiveMind: They refer to themselves as "we" and frequently describe themselves as "all who are one".
* HumanDisguise: Tamiel, the [[ApocalypseCult cult leader]] from Roak, is all but directly stated to be a Grigori that took human(oid) form.[[note]]The stone in his forehead is his Grigori stone.[[/note]] He channels the Grigori's desire for universal destruction through his worship of the Archfiend Asmodeus and uses his cult to spread support for this throughout Roak, carrying out the Missing Procedure's will like the rest of the Grigori.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "Cimmerian Halls", which plays whenever a Grigori transforms; and "I Do, Therefore I Am", which plays when you fight one.
* OneWingedAngel: They transform by absorbing any nearby organisms (dead or living) into themselves.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: They have an angel motif going on: They're named after fallen angels, transform into creatures that have wings of some kind (with the late game ones looking more overtly angelic), the energy they emit as they transform takes the shape of an angel, and the way they corrupt lifeforms through unnatural evolution is similar to how fallen angels are depicted as tempting mortals to sin.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: The Grigori are named after fallen angels.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Satanail]]
!! Apostle of Creation Satanail

The control unit for the Missing Procedure. He feeds it the life energy siphoned by the Grigori, and in return, it spawns more Grigori and Phantoms, speeding up the process through which the Missing Procedure gains power.
----
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:It's Faize possessed by the Grigori]].
* {{BFS}} Wields one of the same size as himself.
* EvilPlan: [[spoiler: Faize's desire to help others is hijacked by the Griogori's hatred of life as it exists to create the well intentioned plan below.]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: [[spoiler: When Faize is wearing the mask his voice is much deeper.]]
* GoodHurtsEvil: He has a resistance to Dark element attacks, and a weakness to Light attacks.
* OmnicidalManiac: Destroying all life that exists in the process of creating a new world.
* OneWingedAngel: It was born from a transformation in the Apostle of Creation for the final boss battle.
* {{Satan}}: Or rather, Satanail. [[spoiler: In either case, the idea of a person with a god complex that wants to recreate the world in their own fashion fits the description.]]
* ThatManIsDead: [[spoiler: He says this to Edge and the party after Edge tries to reason with him by calling him by his real name, Faize. When they repeatedly insist on calling him that and that the real Faize is still in there, he ''really'' gets mad.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: He is attempting to create a universe where no one will have to suffer and die like Faize's Eldarian brothers and sisters did. The only problem is that recreating the entire universe would kill everyone in it.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Missing Procedure]]
!! The Missing Procedure

An entity resembling a black hole that exists in another dimension. It is described by the Morphus as a "will" acting towards a specific end, implying that it has some kind of sentience. It is the creator of the Grigori and the Phantoms and they act on its behalf to carry out its goal to destroy the universe and create a new, lifeless one in its place.
----
* TheAntiGod: Its nature as a "will unknown" that does not support life and disrupts the natural order of our universe's "will" lends itself to this interpretation, in addition to it being a powerful cosmic entity that creates beings themed around fallen angels and will replace our current universe with a new, lifeless one if left unchecked.
* CosmicHorror: Being a black hole-like entity from another dimension that disrupts the natural order of our universe and gains power by absorbing our universe's life energy puts it in this category.
* GreaterScopeVillain: As the creator of the Grigori and the Phantoms, it is responsible for all the destruction they've caused. But while it's implied to be sentient in some way, it's not a proper character, and has no direct involvement in the events of the story. Its Grigori creations act as the main antagonists on its behalf.
* SentientCosmicForce: It's implied to be sentient in some way.
* TheUnfought: Never directly fought, makes sense as it's a cosmic entity and likely has no physical form.
