!'''Munsu'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/190px-Munsu1_4096.png]]
''Voiced by Creator/KeijiFujiwara (Japanese), by Creator/JasonDouglas (English)''

The primary "[[AntiHero hero]]" of Manhwa/ShinAngyoOnshi and one of the few Angyo Onshi left after the destruction of Jushin. Accompanied with his TrueCompanions, Bang Ja and Sando, he strives to destroy evil and corruption, along with confronting his arch-nemesis, the one responsible for the destruction of Jushin, Aji Tae.

An expert [[TheGunslinger gunslinger]] who uses a revolver and sawn-off shotgun (later upgrades it to a pair of Lugers), his greatest weapon is his Three-Horse Mahai, capable of summoning the Phantom Soldiers. In his days as General, he was also noted to have been an exceptional swordsman.
-----
* AntiHero: Virtually covers all the bases of the trope. Quite literally, he goes from a Type V to Type II as CharacterDevelopment progresses. Likes to think he's more of a [[AntiVillain villain]].
* AnyoneCanDie: Succumbs to his grieveous wounds when confronting Aji Tae. In fact, he dies even before Aji Tae realizes.
* TheAtoner: Blames himself for everything that has happened - mostly because it was ''he'' who installed Aji Tae so high up in Jushin's government. [[spoiler: Even more so when he realizes that he was the one who freed Aji Tae from his seal as a child in the first place.]]
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: And asses have been kicked!
* BadassArmy: His Phantom Soldiers, and earlier the [[spoiler: Phantom Brigade]].
* BadassBoast: When properly pissed, he will usually give one of these. Expect asses to be kicked.
* BadassLongcoat: Always wears a knee-length long-coat. Later, it's upgraded to be fire-retardent.
* BadassNormal: In a world filled with Gods and demons, Munsu stands out as being solely without any real powers (aside from his Phantom Soldiers, which are useless against demons anyway). His relies purely on his skills and cunning to kick ass.
* BrokenPedestal: To Won Sul, who used to idolize him. [[spoiler:In the back story, his HeroicBSOD effected by Aji Tae's MindScrew-y impersonation and take-over of Hae Mo Su's identity momentarily caused him to become this in Kye Wol Hyang's eyes, when he decided to give up on saving Jushin and just wanted to run away with her. Aji Tae tempted Kye to kill Munsu on ground of him being no longer worthy of her love, but she killed herself instead and snapped Munsu out of it.]]
* CannotSpitItOut: When it came to his feelings for Kye Wol Hyang, the legendary general of Jushin behaved like a timid schoolboy who could not find the courage to ask the girl he liked out for a date. His fellow Phantom Brigade soldier once called him out for this and gave him advice that pretty much boiled down to "just get to third base already".
* CatchPhrase: Whenever he's about to do anything heroic:
--> [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial "Everything that happens now is by chance. Don't ever hope that something like this will happen again."]]
--> "There is no such thing as a miracle."
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Kye Wol Hyang's VictoriousChildhoodFriend, despite him spending years and years of thinking they're just LikeBrotherAndSister.
* CombatPragmatist: And ''holy fucking hell he is''... Munsu cheats the shit out of his fights so often he ought to be the poster boy for for this trope... He knows his serious disadvantages - especially when monsters are involved - and ''knows'' there is zero incentive for him to fight fair.
* ConfusionFu: His cheating and unconventional weapons aside, he uses this trope in just about the purest way possible [[spoiler:when commanding the battle against Aji Tae's army, making tactical decisions by literally ''rolling dice''. While the ground battle goes as well as you might expect, it serves the intended purpose of throwing Aji Tae off balance, since his mind-reading powers are useless when Munsu isn't doing anything he can predict.]]
* CoolTeacher: [[spoiler:To Marlene von Lucid, who crossed the ocean just to meet him again.]]
* CripplingOverspecialisation: The Phantom Soldiers only work against humans. It says a lot about the setting that this is a serious problem. This is an interesting case of LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler: Following the war against Kaidaten, it was Munsu himself who promised his Ghost Brigade that he will ''never'' let them fight against any monsters ever again. And seeing as the Phantom Soldiers are a supernaturally reincarnated Ghost Brigade...]] ...[[OhCrap Well, shit]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Varies between deadpan snark, and....angry snark.
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:In contrast to Aji Tae's account that Hae Mo Su and Munsu only rose to the top of Jushin thanks to his granting Hae Mo Su's wish to become Emperor when they first met, Munsu declared that it was actually ''his'' wish that was granted back then - he was also present when Hae Mo Su made the wish, and secretly prayed for Hae Mo Su's wish to be realized.]]
* DeathGlare: When he gives off one of these, ''you will not survive''. In fact, you're probably pretty much dead right then and there.
* TheDeterminator: [[spoiler:''Not even death itself'' will stop him from taking down Aji Tae.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Crosses it when the whole thing with Jushin's downfall happened.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Frequently does this to Aji Tae and his lackeys.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: He beat the living shit out of Aji Tae at once point. [[spoiler: Turns out Munsu is the only one capable, thanks to the curse Aji Tae gave him]].
* AFatherToHisMen: Extremely well liked and respected by all of his men - and he in turn was the best general they could have asked for.
* FourStarBadass: He was once crowned a "Legendary General", one of in a very short list throughout Jushin's time.
* FrontlineGeneral: During the battle of Que Ta Chun he ''initially'' directs the battle from the rear, but when things start to go South he personally takes to the front line along with the Ghost Brigade to intervene, and manages to turn the tide.
* GunsAkimbo: The Woo. Often you'll see him pull off some cool stunts with them, despite his condition.
* TheGunslinger: Not only that, but he easily sports some of the most badass and iconic guns of the anime/manga hero: [[BlingBlingBang Dual-wield golden]] [[RuleOfCool Luger pistols]]!
* HandicappedBadass: He suffers asthma from hell.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: He suffers from [[spoiler: Kye Wol Hyang's]] breathing condition, which was transferred to him by Aji Tae.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As noted above, he's a bit of a dick. That said, deep down he's a truly remarkable man who always looks after his friends.
* KnightInSourArmor: He's an absolute asshole, but as you read on, you start to see just why so many people ''adored'' him and why he's no longer that person.
* MasterOfIllusion: It's a part of your basic Angyo Onshi package, and a pretty useful one at that - courtesy of Hae Mo Su.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Of ''Bak Mun-su'', a 18th Century Angyo Onshi who dedicated his life to routing corruption out of the ruling class of Korea.
* NoSenseOfDirection: Something of a gag with him, though it's hard to tell whether he truly ''has'' a crappy sense of direction, or just plain bad luck.
* TheMourningAfter: To Kye Wol Hyang. The love he still has for her and the sorrow at her death take up a good chunk of his characterization.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: The entire plot revolves around him not just wanting to kill Aji Tae, but ''utterly wipe him from existence''. He WILL NOT stop until it's done.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Kye Wol Hyang. The universe as a whole just doesn't seem to ship this pairing. [[spoiler:Let's count: they were together for half their lives and yet remained only friends even after they'd fallen in love. Kye Wol Hyang tried to push the matter but Munsu let too many personal feelings get in the way (his CannotSpitItOut mentality in regard to himself and LikeBrotherAndSister in regard to her, Hae Mo Su in his opinion being a better suitor, his ShellShockedVeteran phase after the Kaidaten war), so none of that really got anywhere until they both got out of Jushin. Then, when Kye finally got him to confess and ''right at the moment they started to make love'', Pretinicia soldiers barged in and declared him a wanted criminal of Jushin (thanks to Aji Tae's manipulation), forcing him to go into hiding for two years. During that time, Kye became Queen in a loveless marriage with Hae Mo Su. When they finally met again, Munsu just failed a coup d'etat big time and left disoriented as a result of Aji Tae' mind-screwy plot, and Kye just [[OurZombiesAreDifferent survived]] [[DrivenToSuicide a shot to the head after being raped by Aji Tae]]. Then she died by running herself through Munsu's sword.]]
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:The whole tragedy of Jushin started with him bringing Aji Tae to court and introducing him to Hae Mo Su. And he might be the one whose wish unbound Aji Tae's seal in the first place.]]

!'''Chun Hyang (Sando)'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Chun_Hyang_Character_Mugshot_7474.png]]
''Voiced by Creator/SanaeKobayashi (Japanese), by Creator/NancyNovotny (English)''

A beautiful woman with prodigious fighting skill. She acts as Munsu's ''"Sando"'', or bodyguard. When she was kidnapped by a corrupt lord who wanted to make her his personal bodyguard, her lover embarked on a futile quest to become an Angyo Onshi. He died in the process, but not before making Munsu aware of her plight. After Munsu frees her, she decides to become his bodyguard in memory of her dead lover, and takes the title "Sando" as her new name.
----
* AchillesHeel: Cold weather, it seems. She's always barefoot, but during her stay at Mount Chilgap, she wrapped up her feet in thick bandages. Likewise, she wore shoes at Mujang's mountain. One of the earlier stories had her extremely sick as a result of unpredictable mountain weather.
* ActionGirl: And ''how''. Her entire job description is kicking ass in Munsu's name.
* BadassAdorable: Insanely tough and skilled, but also very childlike. It also helps that she has a very bubbly face.
* BadassCape: Always wears a heavy cloak to cover up her {{Stripperific}} battle outfit.
* BattleButler: She was this until Bang-Ja came along. After that, she did most of the battling without any of the butler-ing.
* {{BFS}}: That's one hell of a sword she's got! And that...[[BuffySpeak claw....thingy]].
* BodyguardCrush: Has one on Munsu, and later [[spoiler: Aji Tae]]. She definitely has a [[{{Bishonen}} type]].
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Courtesy of Aji Tae. He first appeared as an incredibly friendly and lame goofball who endeared himself to her rather quickly. After she left Munsu and was in a vulnerable spot, he used this to get insider her head completely.
* BreakTheCutie: ''Godamn you'', Aji Tae...
* DeathGlare: When she sports one of these, you are ''fucked''.
* FaceHeelTurn: She's left broken following her defeat at Marlene's hands, and craving more power. Aji Tae offered. Then HeelFaceTurn, when she finally kills Aji Tae herself.
* HonorBeforeReason: Although, Munsu calls her out on her bullshit - as an Angyo Onshi, his troupe can't afford to fight fair. She cries.
* TheIngenue: Strong sense of honor aside, her socialization with Munsu, Mongryong and just about everyone else suggest that she has a [[{{ManChild}} Woman Child]] mentality. [[spoiler:Her Gaiden chapter confirms this fact --- she was literally born just ''months'' before she met Munsu.]]
* IJustWantToBeBadass: As she finds herself increasingly outclassed by other badasses who come her way and threaten Munsu's well-being (Marlene, Dorso, Tae Yu, just to name a few). [[spoiler:She eventually leaves Munsu's side to train under Mujang (who tutors her as a favor to Aji Tae), not knowing that it was Aji Tae's ploy to keep her from returning to Munsu and brainwash her into forgetting him.]]
* TheLostLenore: Hers is Mongryong.
* MagicalGirlfriend: Explained in the Gaiden. Mongryong found her fall down from the sky, naked, childlike and couldn't speak a word of human language [[spoiler:as she was born just minutes earlier from a flying dragon]]. He took her home, fed her and taught her the basics of human interactions. Then he discovered she had the ability to kill monsters and they fell in love.
* NotQuiteHuman: She's a demon, born of a giant dragon that came from the moon. She was gonna be ''married'' to Mong Ryong. [[spoiler:Her true nature aside]], think for a second what it would look like to other people, [[spoiler:since Mong Ryong and Munsu are possbily the only two characters who see her as a human.]]
* OneManArmy: She can dispatch Munsu's Ghost Brigade with ease.
* TheQuietOne: She rarely talks. In fact, she ''cries'' more than she talks.
* ShrinkingViolet: Draw a sword against her, and prepare for the fight of your life. Give her a lecture, or a stern talking-to, and she effectively curls up.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: With a hefty dose of RuleOfSexy to 'justify' it. There's no logical reason for her to keep wearing the bondage-esque outfit she was [[GoGoEnslavement forced into]] in her introductory chapter. She does so anyway. [[spoiler:She isn't human, so it's likely clothes just feel restrictive for her.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: After her training, she can also use ki.
* TheUnreveal: [[spoiler: Sando's true form appears to be that of some sort of demon, but only Munsu sees it in the end]].
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Mong Ryong certainly feels so.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's ''terrified'' of heights and bridges. She can't even cross a five-foot log without screaming and crying, and completely circles around the entire mountains to catch up to Munsu just to avoid a tiny bridge. Munsu finds this to be nonsensical bullshit given her penchant for flying around in battle.

!'''Bang Ja'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bangja1_5215.png]]

An unnamed [[MistressAndServantBoy bang ja]] which had served two Angyo Onshi, Aria and Munsu. As their bang ja, he acts as their servant. His duties including preparing foods and also helping his masters in their efforts as Angyo Onshi.
----
* ButtMonkey: He never really gets a break. In fact, Bang Ja's constant humilitation is ''factored'' into Munsu's schemes.
* CharacterDevelopment: He truly becomes a brave little guy throughout the series.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He ''actually'' helped Munsu take down Won Hyo! That's just one example of where his inner badassery can shine through.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Had to watch his original Onshi and his Bang-Ja get beheaded and have their heads displayed on spikes.]] If anything, this made him even more determined in being a servant.
* HappinessInSlavery: Munsu essentially treats him like complete shit 90% of the time. He even throws him into [[AxCrazy Won Sul's]] penitentiary just to be rid of him. Yet he's still completely giddy with the fact that he gets to be his servant.
* HonorBeforeReason: He's like Sando in this regard, which annoys Munsu to no end.
* NoNameGiven: We never really learn what his true name is. He's just happy with Bang Ja.
* TookALevelInBadass: Right around the time of the The Melting Path arc, every subsequent chapter is a tiny boost in badassery for him.
* UndyingLoyalty: To his friends, but especially to Munsu.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Aji Tae's Forces]]
!'''Aji Tae'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/190px-Ajitae4_2010.png]]

The central antagonist of Shin Angyo Onshi. He is a black-winged demon who was responsible for Jushin's destruction, alongside many other mishaps throughout the series. Leading a band of supernatural fighters, heroes from the past, demons, and powerful black magic practitioners from the western country of Pretinica, he aims to conquer the known land and reshape it to his own bidding.
----
* AchillesHeel:
** The biggest weakness that his omnipotence has is the fact that [[spoiler: Munsu received some of it when Aji Tae transferred him Kye Wol Hyang's disease]]. In short, Munsu is the only person who can [[CurbstompBattle utterly beat the senseless fuck out of him]] without Aji Tae's powers affecting him.
** Making eye contact with his target seems to be a requirement for his power to work. [[spoiler:Munsu realizes this when Aji Tae misses Yeongsil's kick by an inch and steps on his cloak to prevent him from seeing Sando's attack from behind. This is what finally kills Aji Tae.]]
* ArchEnemy: Munsu is absolutely obsessed with destroying him, and the feeling is mutual.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: And the inversion.
* BadassBookworm: He really WAS a complete bookworm while he served as Munsu's advisor.
* BadassLongcoat: Takes to wearing fancier and fancier coats as the series goes on. [[spoiler:[[CapeSnag This is actually a factor in his death.]]]]
* BigBad: The primary villain responsible for everything bad in the series.
* BigBadFriend: When Munsu was still a general they were both friends, and Aji Tae was well-trusted by everyone, although it was 100% an act on Aji Tae's part - even then he was still planning to kill Munsu and conquer/destroy Jushin, and never had any real concept of "friendship" towards anyone.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Back in the days of Jushin, no one really expected the scrawny Aji Tae to be almost like a God.
* BodyHorror: Some of his powers qualify as this - his literally ''explodes'' his enemies into mush.
* BroughtDownToNormal: This is what happens whenever he faces off against Munsu, [[spoiler: as long as he still carries the disease with him]].
* TheCaligula: [[spoiler:While masquerading as the king of Jushin he orders mass purges of the poor, destroying villages and slaughtering countless people. He claims to be trying to make the country more "beautiful", but in truth he just wants to make as many people suffer as possible. That and drive them into pure savagery so he can prove that HumansAreBastards]].
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Starts off as this, what with his pet duck and all...
* ConsummateLiar: Constantly lies about everything, which combined with his rather [[MindScrew Mind Screwy]] nature makes it almost impossible to determine his true origin or motives - it isn't even clear if [[spoiler:he was originally a human, or a demon, or both.]]
* TheCorrupter: His modus operandi - he gets into the hearts and minds of those around him, getting them to worship him either out of awe or fear.
* CurbstompBattle: Whenever Aji Tae gets into a fight, it isn't even this. It's more like a case of ThereIsNoKillLikeOverKill. With a ''mere thought'' he can make any creature, living or dead, explode into mush. That said, if he's not delivering the carnage, he's on the receiving end of it, thanks to his AchillesHeel.
* DiabolicalMastermind: Insanely cunning and smart, though later revealed as a result of his power to read minds. When Munsu places stock on a strategy relying on pure luck, Aji Tae gets completely blindsided.
* DirtyCoward: Despite his supreme confidence, [[spoiler:during his final confrontation with Munsu, when he realizes that Munsu ''[[WhyWontYouDie just won't die]]'' Aji Tae is reduced to a state of total panic, screaming, crying and even begging Munsu to stay away, suggesting he's only confident when he knows he can count on his immense power.]]
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: The more powerful he becomes, the crazier he gets.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: When Kye Wol Hyang [[spoiler:opts to kill herself rather than Munsu, despite being told that killing him would heal her completely,]] Aji Tae is bewildered and enraged, totally unable to understand why she did it, and begins [[KickTheDog slaughtering any innocent people he can find]] and ranting about how worthless and savage humanity is.
* EvilOverlord: His minions refer to him as "Lord Aji Tae", and he conquers most of the former Jushin territories.
* ExpressiveHair: Done subtly: the further he goes off the deep end, the wilder and more unkempt his hair gets.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: About as literally as possible - friendly, handsome, sweet, charming blond PrettyBoy on the surface (he even has wings sometimes, although they're black), ''pure evil'' underneath.
* FalseFriend: To Munsu, during his time as a general. To all outward appearances he was a loyal, friendly advisor, when BeneathTheMask he was plotting to destroy him the entire time.
* FauxAffablyEvil: His sheer charisma and aura is second to none. In reality he's nothing more than a heartless, cold-blooded psychopath using a friendly and charming exterior to manipulate people and hide what a monster he is.
* ForTheEvulz: He has no real explanation why he does the terrible things he does. Only that he's a demon who enjoys pain and suffering. And even that explanation doesn't hold up to scrutiny, considering there exist other demons who are nowhere near as pointlessly malicious, like [[TorturedMonster Won Hyo]] and [[ObliviouslyEvil Que Ta Chun]] - apparently Aji Tae is just a rotten bastard even by the standards of ''demons''.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Wore large round glasses when he was Munsu's advisor, although he's ditched them by the present day.
* AGodAmI: For once, an actual villain whose powers are practically on the realm of gods. Others act haughty and on behalf of ambition, but Aji Tae can actually [[OhCrap back up]] his [[HannibalLecture Hannibal Lectures]].
* GodIsEvil: Or at least, someone with the powers of a god is evil.
* GoodHairEvilHair: Back when he was "[[BlatantLies one of the good guys]]", he sported short brown hair and round glasses. When he made his position known, his hair grew out much longer and wilder, and became white.
* HannibalLecture: Loves to lecture Munsu.
* HellishPupils: Develops these after [[spoiler:Munsu awakens from his coma.]]
* ImAHumanitarian: [[spoiler:How he killed Hae Mo Su, Emperor of Jushin.]]
* {{Irony}}: His grand plan at first to get rid of Munsu was to transfer Kye Wol Hyang's disease to him, and have it slowly eat away at him. He never expected this to be Munsu's [[OhCrap immunity]] to his powers... There's also the fact that [[spoiler: it was Sando who killed him, someone whom he put so much effort and manipulation into]].
* KnightOfCerebus: The story is pretty dark and violent most of the time anyway, but when Aji Tae shows up after dropping his good-natured facade it's a surefire sign that things are about to get much worse ''very fast''.
* LackOfEmpathy: He doesn't care one bit about anyone other than himself, even if he goes to great lengths to pretend otherwise. For example, [[spoiler:he devotes a huge amount of time and effort to befriending Sando, swaying her over to his cause and making her stronger, and gives every impression that he cares deeply for her... then the moment she returns to Munsu's side he casually dismisses her without a second thought, and comes within an inch of vaporizing her with a smile on his face.]]
* LudicrousGibs: His main method of attack is to explosively reduce his opponents to a pile of gore.
* ManipulativeBastard: ''Everything'' that goes bad in the series is a result of his machinations.
* MaskOfSanity: To an impressive extent - he first appears (chronologically) as a meek, timid, scholarly young man. Later, he acts the part of a cheerful, friendly ditz to gain Sando's confidence. Later still, he maintains a charming, charismatic persona even after revealing his true identity. [[spoiler:[[BeneathTheMask These are ALL acts]]: he ultimately proves himself to be a petty, brutal, sadistic, arrogant psychopath without the slightest redeeming feature.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: He can take on the form of anyone.
* MrFanservice: ''One'' of the reasons why [[spoiler: Sando]] becomes attracted to him. He's just damn good looking!
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: For all his amazing powers, it is still possible to kill him.
* OneWingedAngel: A fairly literal example.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: ''[[spoiler:He destroyed all of Jushin in a fit of rage.]]''
* PhysicalGod: By Jushin's destruction, he's already become one.
* PokeInTheThirdEye: One of his tricks. When Yeong Sil invents a telescope, he decides to peek on Aji Tae during a ceremony. Aji Tae merely looks at him and says "Stop staring."
* PrettyBoy: Extremely effeminate and pretty. [[spoiler:One of the reasons Sando takes to him so easily.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: Not immediately obvious, as he's absolutely cool-headed and composed 90% of the time, [[spoiler:but the instant things stop going his way he's quick to lose his self-assured attitude and descend into a petulant, screaming, foot-stomping tantrum, and when he's made to believe he can actually be killed he's driven to [[DirtyCoward cowering on the ground in tears and pathetic, panicked begging for Munsu to leave him alone.]]]]
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: [[spoiler:He violently rapes Kye Wol Hyang, and ultimately drives her to suicide as a result.]]
* {{Sadist}}: He takes an obvious enjoyment in causing pain, both mental and physical.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Back during Jushin's heyday.
* SmugSnake: To an extent - he's extremely powerful, highly intelligent and competent, charming and refined, and can walk the walk as well as he talks the talk... but when he stops playing friendly and really [[DrunkOnTheDarkSide cuts loose]], he proves himself to be such an odious, vile, sneering, arrogant, petty, cowardly, childish, ''''' bastard'''''... it's basically impossible to really admire him or respect any of his accomplishments. He's also an [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil unrepentant rapist]].
* TheSociopath: Aji Tae matches the definition of a clinical sociopath down to a tee: outwardly charming and charismatic, shameless and remorseless, lacking in any sort of empathy, pathologically deceptive and manipulative, utterly self-centered, driven by the need to stimulate and amuse himself at the expense of others, completely incapable of love, friendship, or any genuine emotional attachments... and most of all, ''supremely'' skilled at [[AWolfInSheepsClothing acting otherwise.]]
* SquishyWizard: While his magic is so godlike it isn't usually a problem, he isn't exactly a physical combatant. This is highlighted when when [[spoiler:Munsu beats him up - when he can't just use his power to obliterate his opponent he's [[NonActionBigBad practically helpless in a simple fistfight]].]]
* ToCreateAPlaygroundForEvil: His ultimate ambition is to [[spoiler:turn all of humanity into conscience-free demons and create total hell on earth, because he thinks it would be more interesting and amusing that way.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: Has two of them: First one, when he realizes his powers don't work on Munsu and promptly gets beat the shit out of him, reducing him to a ranting, screaming wreck. Second one is [[spoiler: after he kills Munsu, but freaks out over the fact that his corpse is still standing and still giving him the DeathGlare]].
-->'''Aji Tae''': ''MUAHHHHHHH!!! WHAT THE HELL! [[ThisCannotBe WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?]] HE'S JUST A HUMAN! I AM PERFECT! I AM A PERFECT BEING! I HAVEN'T FULFILLED MY DESTINY! HOW CAN HE-? HOW CAN HE KNOCK ME AROUND LIKE THIS?!''
-->'''Munsu''': [[ShutUpHannibal Perfect? Stop deluding yourself! You're nothing but a fraud!]]
-->'''Aji Tae''': '''''[[BigShutUp SHUT UP!]]'''''
--> ''-Munsu is struck by lightning, but [[NoSell emerges unharmed]]-''
-->'''Munsu''': Didn't I tell you? You're just a fraud! This is far from finished. [[TalkToTheFist I am going to beat you to a bloody pulp!]]
-->'''Aji Tae''': No... don't-
-->''-Munsu grabs Aji Tae by the hair and punches him so hard it turns white-''
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Well, white, silver or blond [[DependingOnTheArtist depending on the colorist]].
* WingedHumanoid: His true from is that of a black-winged demon.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: His power is so vast that no real mortal can even perceive it.

!'''Baron Lou Ells'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/louells1_7748.png]]

A nobleman of the western country of Pretinica, Lou Ells is in fact a practiotioneer of traditional black magic and a mass murderer to boot, having killed 321 people for a ceremony upon first meeting Aji Tae. He has had a hand in corrupting many of Aji Tae's servants and acts as his right hand and confidant. He was also primarily responsible for corrupting Gallimard, and is also thought to be one of the masterminds behind Aji Tae's gambit involving transferring Kye Wol Hyang's disease over to Munsu.

----
* {{Archnemesis}}: To Gallimard at first, then to Mito.
* BigBadDuumvirate: While he eventually became Aji Tae's [[TheDragon Dragon]], he was initially his accomplice in the scheme to both corrupt and absorb Gallimard, and [[spoiler:make Munsu suffer]].
* TheDragon: Aji Tae's right hand man and most trusted servant.
* EyepatchOfPower: Wears a dinstinct eyepatch over his leftr eye, though it doesn't make him more powerful.
* MasterOfIllusion: His forte, although his illusions can ''actually'' tear his victims apart
* SharpDressedMan: As a nobleman of Pretinica (SAO's equivalent of the United Kingdom), he's dressed imppecably as a victorian gentleman.
* TheStoic: Never shows any emotions, even in the face of defeat.
* SummonMagic: Can summon shadowy familiars from out of his top hat.
* WeaponizedHeadgear: A very nice top hat is one of his weapons: He can summom familiars from out of his hat.

!'''Mago'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mago1_9431.png]]

Aji Tae's familiar, assassin and "bodyguard". A sexy ninja-esque woman who is actually a man-eating panther - only Aji Tae apparently sees her as a human. Something of a rival to Chun Hyang.
----
* BeastMan: She's technically a panther, though she ''appears'' human to those who look at her that way.
* {{Berserker}}: When not being her usual stoic self, she's extremely bloodthirsty and vicious.
* BodyguardingABadass: Someone like [[PersonOfMassDestruction Aji Tae]] doesn't really need a whole lot of guarding. Becomes FridgeBrilliance when it's revealed that [[spoiler:the one person who can actually threaten Aji Tae is Munsu, who Mago [[CurbStompBattle easily trounces]] in a straight fight - Aji Tae keeps her close ''specifically'' to deal with him.]]
* DarkActionGirl: Sando's opposite in virtually every way, at least in the beginning.
* DeathGlare: Her general default expression.
* DualWielding: She weapons of choice are a pair of katana strapped to her back.
* TheRival: To Sando, and later to [[spoiler:Yeong Sil]].
* TheStoic: As noted above, when she's not going berserk, she's practically a statue.
* TheQuietOne: She only has a few lines throughout the whole series.

!'''Wonsul (Ran)'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/190px-Wonsul1_8752.png]]

A central character in the series - he first appeared as a primary antagonist during the Melting Path arc, working directly under Aji Tae as a prison warden, but is further expanded upon within flashbacks. Midway into the series, he is revived by Aji Tae as a zombie for the singular purpose of keeping Munsu alive, temporarily becoming his and Bang Ja's companion to make up for Sando disappearance.
----
* AbusiveParents: The gaiden reveals that his father was a selfish, demanding bully who disowned Wonsul and drove his older brother to suicide because they defied him by showing their enemies a hint of compassion.
* AmbiguouslyGay: There are serious implications he was in love with Munsu [[spoiler:by the time they're traveling together.]]
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Has earned the title of "Ran", the strongest and most respected swordsman in Jushin.
* AxCrazy: The guy knows how to let loose in battle... but it might not be entirely his fault, as he only displays these tendencies while under [[TheCorrupter Aji Tae's]] employ. Flashback scenes show that he was a lot calmer in his youth before the destruction of Jushin, and likewise after [[spoiler:his resurrection]].
* BadassNormal: Before he got Saruhyondo, he was nothing more than an ordinary swordsman.
* BadassLongcoat: Oh yes - his trademark. Over the course of the series he goes through at least four different ones. They receive considerable wear and tear throughout the story, though he never gets rid of them.
* BadBoss: He really seemed to enjoy slaughtering his own guards for the hell of it...
* BigDamnHeroes: Cemented his status as this in the Battle of Kaidaten, being the one to slay her at a rather desperate point in the battle, ending it.
* [[ClingyJealousGirl Clingy Jealous Dude]]: From flashbacks, Wonsul was never terribly taken with Kye Wol Hyang (or Aji Tae for that matter), and was visibly hurt when Munsu flatly denied his request to accompany him to Pretinica, saying he "didn't want another guy with him." Then there's the whole issue with [[spoiler:Hong Gildong]]; Won Sul wouldn't even ''entertain'' the idea that Kye Wol Hyang was still alive, as opposed to Munsu's initial shock - it's more accurate to say that he didn't ''want'' her to be alive, since Munsu would simply give his all to her again.
* ConflictingLoyalty: The biggest part of his character is where his loyalty lies: For Munsu out of admiration, or Aji Tae out of fear.
* CoolSword: His sword, the Saruhyondo is actually nothing but a dragon-shaped hilt. His killing intent is what manifests an invisible, shape shifting sword. [[spoiler: When he's revived as a zombie, he loses this ability, and instead has a normal blade fitted onto the Saruhyondo]].
* CurbstompBattle: Pretty much no one is capable of taking him on in a fair fight other than Sando. His fight against Insu and Joy is reduced to pretty much this.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler: After he's turned into a zombie]].
* FailureKnight: Is practically torn inside-out over what happened between Munsu and Aji Tae, and somewhere deep down also blames himself for ultimately siding with Aji Tae.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: He admires and loves Munsu, but is utterly terrified of Aji Tae. Combined with the fact that he's mentally unstable, Won Sul comes off as a man with ''very'' conflicted loyalties.
* HumanoidAbomination: What Aji Tae turns him into by the end.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Whether he's this or JerkWithAHeartOfGold really depends on who he's with at the time, or what his mood is like for that matter. When he's feeling AxCrazy, he'll slaughter anyone and everyone in his way with a [[SlasherSmile smile]] just for the [[ForTheEvulz hell of it]]. When he's feeling [[HonorBeforeReason honorable]], he's awfully considerate of the dead. Munsu tends to call him out on this.
* LightningBruiser: ''Incredibly'' fast. The fact that he can keep up with Chun Hyang (who regularly scales buildings) says a lot. After he's turned into a zombie, he (logically) loses a chunk of his speed in exchange for raw power.
* MercyKill: Munsu grants him this by his request.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Of ''Gim Won-sul'', a 7th Century general who led a disastrous campaign during the Unification Wars and his father tried to have him executed for bringing shame to the military. After his exile he became a death seeker fighting to repel the Tang Chinese from Korea but despite his best efforts he didn't die and was instead victorious though he continued to live in self-exile until his death.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: [[spoiler: When he's revived by Aji Tae, he's a poster boy of a zombie on the outside. However, he still retains his memories, reasoning, and intelligence. In many ways, he's very similar to Coldhands of ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'']].
* RevenantZombie: He still possesses his personality and memories after being resurrected. He especially fits the "driven by purpose" part.
* SwordBeam: Essentially what the Saruhyondo is.
* TookALevelInBadass: In the war against Kaidaten, the moment he got the Saruhyondo, [[spoiler:he decapitated Kaidaten and ended the whole war.]]
* TorturedMonster: The further the plot advances, the shittier Won Sul's life becomes. By the end of it, he's literally ''begging'' for death. It's a bit ironic, as he himself was something of a torturer as a warden.
* TranquilFury: In battle, he's either AxCrazy, or this. If it's this, you are DeaderThanDead.
* WaveMotionSword: Saruhyondo is invisible to most people, but those who can perceive his killing intent see it as something of a lightsaber.

!'''Gallimard'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gallimard1_643.png]]

A "paladin" of Pretinica, tasked with capturing and executing anyone who tampers with "God's domain" - aka, witches and black magic practioners. A just and pious man who sought to pass judgment onto Lou Ells, he was instead corrupted by his black magic and driven insane. Following that, Aji Tae seemingly "assimilated" him into himself then spat him back out. In the end, Gallimard turned into a winged demon - the very same one that Aji Tae is - loyal and devout to him as well. Despite supposedly having all of Aji Tae's powers for himself, he never actually used any other than summoning and controlling the dead.
----
* AffablyEvil: Always gentlemanly and polite, and unlike Aji Tae, this isn't a facade. It's one of his personality traits that remained after he was transformed.
* AxCrazy: Following Lou's mojo on him, Gallimard utterly loses his shit - seeing demons and monsters everywhere and in everyone, causing him to senselessly cut them down. He got a bit better.
* EldritchAbomination: His true form is spectacularly freaky to behold.
* HonorBeforeReason: As a human, he allowed Lou time to finish his "masterpiece" before he killed him. Proved to be his undoing, in a fashion.
* KnightTemplar: Was a devout and religious man at first who sought to kill anyone who practiced black magic.
* NightOfTheLivingMooks: Can summon undead cadavers.
* NonActionGuy: His only fight in the entire series was the initial scuffle he had with Munsu back in Pretinica. And even that mostly consisted of Munsu running away scared shitless.
* SanitySlippage: For a while, he didn't understand what was happening to him following Lou's spell, causing him to go completely insane. It was only after [[IAmAHumanitarian Aji Tae's visit]] that he got better. ...In a fashion.
* UndyingLoyalty: Being a demon of the same species as Aji Tae, he shares a bond to him unlike anyone else, including complete loyalty.
* WingedHumanoid: He's of the same species of demon as Aji Tae and Yui Tae, known for possessing black feathered wings.

!'''Won Hyo'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wonhyo1_5251.png]]

A former high ranking sorcerer of Jushin, under the direct command of General Munsu. A demon as well as a hermaphrodite, Won Hyo received any sort of acceptance and compassion from Munsu, and held a great deal of reverence for him. After the fall of Jushin, Won Hyo snapped and become broken, and thus began to serve Aji Tae as city lord of the town overlooking the Melting Path Penitentiary, alongside Wonsul.
----
* AffablyEvil: Extremely polite, even to those it tortures.
* AmbiguousGender: Won Hyo belongs to a species of demons that are essentially unisex. In the Japanese/Korean version, Won Hyo is referred to by other characters as "she", while in the French and German publications, it's a "he."
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: One of the most powerful sorcerers in Jushin.
* AxCrazy: Even more so than Wonsul.
* BadBoss: Not quite to Won Sul's level though.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: As hinted in the above trope, he finds Won Sul's wanton brutality counterproductive to their drug operation.
* IAmAHumanitarian: Has to hold an annual ceremony where it sucks the life out of another "beautiful young person", to maintain it's human form.
* IAmAMonster: Saw itself as this - Munsu slapped some sense into it, and gave it a place in his army. Ironically, it becomes something of a monster once it joins Aji Tae's forces.
* SummonMagic: Arguably the second best in Jushin, right behind Mito.

!'''Myo Wol'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/myowol1_6506.png]]

Aji Tae's "spy." A demon who can disguise herself - she made her first appearance disguised as a doctor, "assisting" Yeong Sil and Bang Ja on how to cure mandrake effects.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Almost literally. She posed as a meek and goofy apothecary who seemed to fall asleep all too often. The ruse was up almost instantly though.
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:The only way for Eul Paso to beat her was essentially trigger a suicide vest.]]
* FlatCharacter: Aside from her shape shifting ability, nothing was really revealed about her.
* SmugSnake: Extremely confident in her abilities, and constantly taunted Eul Paso, not realizing how much of a badass he truly was.

!'''Mujang'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mujang1_6353.png]]

A warrior who has dedicated his entire life to the martial arts. Why he has joined Aji Tae's side is unknown, but it assumed so he can find stronger opponents and hone his skills. For a time, he acted as [[spoiler:Chun Hyang's]] master, teaching her hapki.

----
* TheAce: Claims to be the greatest swordsman and martial artist who's ever lived. Considering he's the ''only'' person to be able to fight against the greatest of Jushin's generals, Jung Son, ''he probably is.''
* AntiVillain: He's not actually an evil guy at all - just a bit of a dick. The reason he joined Aji Tae in the first place was to seek worthy opponents, and for that same reason betrays him.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Munsu's ass ''the second'' before Jung Son was about to cut it off.
* BloodKnight: The man ''lives'' for nothing but battle.
* CoveredWithScars: As part of his extremely rugged and manly image.
* DrillSergeantNasty: The reason Baek Ryong and Tae Yu ran away from him. That said, he was actually relatively kind to [[spoiler:Sando]], if not a little rough.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX Jecht]]. They look alike, talk alike, are drunks, and both tend to kick ass when the calling is there.
* HeelFaceTurn: He's introduced as an ally of Aji Tae, but you ''never really'' pin down his intentions. He finally betrays him in the end when he saves Munsu. Ultimately he's more Neutral than anything else, as he was never really loyal to anyone or anything beyond his own desire for a good fight.
* JerkAss: Is noted to be an utter douchebag by both of his students - in fact, they ran away from him for pretty much this reason. He was much more of a JerkWithAHeartOfGold toward Chun Hyang though.

!'''Jung Son'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jungson1_9683.png]]

The greatest hero of Jushin's past, and the first General to receive the title of "Legendary" - nearly 500 years ago. Is also the one who coined Jushin's battle cry "Absolute Jushin!" He has allowed Aji Tae to resurrect him so he may experience the thrill and joy of battle again. Despite Jushin (past tense) being littered with his statues, in turns out he's really not much of a hero - just a bloodthirsty maniac.
----
* TheAce: The most revered hero of Jushin's past, noted to be an excellent leader, tactician and warrior.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: The greatest of Jushin's generals is also probably one of its greatest warriors. ''Do not fight this man if you want to live.'' That includes you too, Munsu - tricks and cunning won't do it either.
* AxCrazy: Of the Won Sul-variety. He appears extremely calm and collected, but when he gets into battle he completely cuts loose.
* BadassBoast: Coined the battle cry "Absolute Jushin!" Not that he really cares about it anymore...
* {{BFS}}: His sword radiates with his killing intent. Read: ''It's three time his size.''
* BloodKnight: The only reason why he chose to be resurrected. He doesn't give a shit about ideals, life or death. As long as he gets to fight and kill, he's satisfied.
* Really700YearsOld: He's many centuries old, if not older. He was resurrected courtesy of Aji Tae.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: His utterly enormous sword radiates with his killing intent - a single swipe is capable of mowing down a field of soldiers if need be.
* TheStoic: [[NotSoStoic Until he isn't]]. See AxCrazy above.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Munsu's reaction when the guy pulls out his {{BFS}}.

!'''Que Ta Chun'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaidaten1_8019.png]]

An ally greatly respected and revered by Aji Tae. She is in fact Kaidaten, a great and powerful demon hive mother that engaged Jushin in a now-famous great war over 10 years prior to the start of the story. At the war's conclusion, Wonsul single-handedly won them the battle when he threw Saruhyondo and beheaded her. But Aji Tae being Aji Tae, he opted to resurrect her and start the war all over again. Despite her great power and control over mindless hordes of demons, she is in fact an innocent child that approaches everything as if it were a game.
----
* AndCallHimGeorge: On a grand, tragic scale - Won Sul's gaiden chapter reveals that she had absolutely no malice towards anyone in Jushin and honestly couldn't understand the harm she was causing. From her perspective she just wanted people to play with because she was lonely.
* BadassAdorable: ''Just look at her.'' You'd never think she's the source of an EldritchAbomination hive, let alone the most powerful demon of them all. In fact, like Aji Tae, a thought is all she needs to blow her enemies to pieces. In her case, she can call down lightning.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Ancient and powerful, but mentally she is little more than an innocent child, and wholly incapable of comprehending just what her actions are causing.
* TheDreaded: Anyone who knows anything knows that she's a foe not to be taken even remotely lightly. She almost single-handedly destroyed Jushin at one point.
* EldritchAbomination: Considered one, though in her defense, she doesn't actually look like one - rather, her "children" are this. With her regards to her, she resembles more of a harpie in her true form.
* HiveQueen: All of the demons ultimately come from her (save for the ''really'' special ones, like Aji Tae and Gallimard), and in turn she controls them.
* {{Irony}}: She was the first friend Won Sul ever made as a child. Yet he was the one who landed the decisive blow against her, without even realizing who she was.
* ObliviouslyEvil: She truly doesn't understand that leading an army of murderous demons to attack Jushin is in any way a bad thing - as far as she's concerned they're all just "playing".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hwalbindang]]

!'''Hong Gildong'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/holdgildong1_2125.png]]

A mysterious woman who calls herself Kye Wol Hyang - Munsu's supposedly dead lover - and leader of a group of martial artists who work as Robin Hood-like bandits, taking money from the rich so that they can provide for the poor. She has one hell of a grudge against Munsu, and to exact her vendetta, she is willing to put all her other plans on hold - simply for the sake of making him suffer.

----
* AngstySurvivingTwin: [[spoiler:Subverted, at first. Even as a bastard child, she never resented her position due to her relationship with Kye Wol Hyang. The angst never really came until Munsu showed up in Kimhae. That said they're not exactly twins, as Gildong and Wol Hyang are merely identical half-sisters.]]
* BarefootPoverty: [[spoiler:Unlike Kye Wol Hyang, she grew up into bleak poverty. That said, she never once hated her sister for it.]]
* BreakTheHaughty: Gets one, when Munsu tells her that her deeds, while apparently righteous, are still criminal.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: She initially appears beside the Kimhae palace chamber standing tip-toe on tree branches, then proceeds to speedily hop away [[FlashStep ninja-style]] back to her ship with Insu and Joy. Later she's stated to be physically weak, only knowing the bare minimum of martial arts.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: [[spoiler:When she talks to Munsu, she takes over the identity of her dead sister Kye Wol Hyang. Munsu realizes it pretty much right away though.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Her initial goals were just and noble, but once she learned that Munsu was still alive, she became utterly ravaged by her hatred - stopping ''at nothing'' to make him suffer.
* {{Expy}}: A darker take on the sixteenth century literary hero Hong Gildong who also robbed from the rich to give to the poor.
* [[AFatherToHisMen A Mother To Her Men]]: Noted to be an exceptionally charismatic leader, treating all of her subordinates as her friends.
* TheHeart: She has no martial arts skills, is physically weak, and is even tactically less savvy than some of her subordinates. Yet it's her iron will that glues them all together.
* HeroicBastard: She likes to think she's a hero. Munsu disagrees.
* JustifiedCriminal: Again, she likes to think she's this.
* JustLikeRobinHood: Though in this case the author's inspiration was Hong Gildong himself.
* NonActionGuy: She has no real martial arts skills, but still has managed to amass a powerful crew willing to put down their lives for her simply due to her spirit and charisma alone.
* {{Revenge}}: The whole business between her and Munsu, the reason being the circumstances that surround her "death" [[spoiler:actually her sister's, Kye Wol Hyang's death]].
* RevengeBeforeReason: And boy does she go out of her ways to even the score with Munsu. It does not end well for her.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's impossible to reveal so much as a single detail about her without spoiling the entire Hwalbindang arc.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: According to Munsu. While it's true that she steals from the rich to give to the poor, to him it doesn't change the fact that she's a thief and must be punished.
* WideEyedIdealist: Starts off as this; she genuinely wants to help other people and her determination is why ki attacks don't have any effect on her. When Munsu points out how far off the deep end she's gone, she goes completely nuts.

!'''Baek Ryong'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baryong1_1565.png]]

The Hwalbindang's strongest fighter, the group's second in command as well as Kye's lover. Studying with Tae Yu the art of hapki under Mujang, the two got sick and tired of him and prompted to run away, where they both met her and together decided to create the Hwalbindang - a group of bandits who steal from the rich and give to the poor.

While both of them had feelings for her, only Baek Ryong acted on them and the two became lovers. Easily the most rational and merciful member of the group, yet wholly capable of retaliating with lethal force if his enemy refuses cooperation.
----
* AntiVillain: The most merciful member of the group - he ''urges'' Kimhae's armada to stop so he doesn't have to hurt anyone. When they ignore it, in in turn hurts ''everyone.''
* BodyguardCrush: To Kye Wol Hyang [[spoiler:a.k.a Hong Gildong]], which she reciprocates.
* {{Crossdresser}}: Despite being a complete badass as well as heterosexual, his robes look very much feminine, not to mention he wears golden bell anklets. His clothing style as a whole is largely inspired by ancient India, where it was actually the ''men'' who wore revealing, flowing robes while women wore traditional saris. Also, absolutely everyone went barefoot then and wore anklets.
* OneManArmy: Not even an ''armada'' will put a dent on this guy.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: His Ki spheres can annihilate an ''entire fleet of ships.'' It goes without saying he could have blown up the entirety of Kimhae if he wanted to.

!'''Tae Yu'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taeyu1_8032.png]]

The first person recruited by Kye to form the Hwalbindang, followed shortly by Ryong. Moved by her selflessness and willing to help the needy, he uses his sword and hapki skills to aid her desire in creating a better world. He too eventually fell in love with her, but unlike Ryong he never expressed them, knowing that she instead already reciprocated Ryong's feelings.

During the battle in Kimhae, his limbs were accidentally blown off by Cheol, but survived along with Su with the help of Mito. Having nowhere else to go, he opted to train with Mito in becoming a summoner ''not'' to exact revenge on Munsu, but instead to help kill Aji Tae for killing Dorso.
----
* ActionSurvivor: [[spoiler:By the series' end, he is the only fighter left of Hwalbindang.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite being an extremely skilled hapki user, he's a touch ''odd'' - he likes to change subjects of discussion rather abruptly, and in the middle of fighting tends to go off into bizarre tangents, reminiscing into great detail of some experience or another.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: As the above example illustrates, he's prone to spacing out every now and then.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:Teams up with Munsu, the one responsible for the fall of Hwalbindang, to fight against Aji Tae.]]
* IsItSomethingYouEat: His first assumption is that "Aji Tae" is "some sort of food".
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:He also loves Hong Gildong, but supports her relationship with Bae Ryong, his best friend.]]
* MasterSwordsman: Strangely, he himself admits that he isn't the strongest member of Hwalbindang.
* TheQuietOne: Played with. He's either this, or a MotorMouth. It really depends on the situation and his mood - he's pretty weird.
* SummonMagic: Becomes a rather skilled one thanks to Mito, capable of summoning ''Won Hyo's''' strongest familiar.
* TookALevelInBadass: After training under Mito, he can use very high-level magic.

!'''Dorso'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dorso1_3000.png]]

The first member of the Hwalbindang to appear. He was chasing Eul Paso through the woods to catch him - having previously caught Hwang - as well as to deliver a message to Munsu from their leader. Or, he was supposed to - he was having too much fun to remember that last bit.

During the battle of Kimhae, he was sent to retrieve the gold from their vaults along with Joy and Insu.
----
* BareFistedMonk: Literally, as he uses nothing but his fists without anything resembling finesse.
* BerserkButton: Betraying the Hwalbindang seems to be his.
* TheBrute: He's the bands muscle, and his fighting style is nothing more than brawling and pummeling his opponent with raw ki.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: ''Insanely'' powerful and strong. In fact, strong enough to overpower ''Chun Hyang'' without even trying.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Despite being fairly powerful, he's more or less a complete idiot.
* DumbMuscle: Plenty of muscle, and plenty of dumb to boot.
* HonorBeforeReason: [[DumbMuscle Not that he's got much ability for reasoning to begin with...]] Betryal is something he doesn't take too well, regardless of the situation.
* ManChild: Despite being freakishly strong, he has the mentality of a child and always refers to the leader as "Mama."
* UndyingLoyalty: To his "mama." Arguably the most loyal member of the group.

!'''Su'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/su_4502.png]]

The youngest member of the group - he's in charge of keeping an eye on Miss Hwang while she was held captive in their ship. A typical CatBoy with cat-like behavior and mannerisms.
----
* CatBoy: PlayedWith, as he only ''behaves'' like a feline - he's not ''actually'' a half-cat.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: The end result of Eul Paso's final attack.
* HeroicSacrifice: Twice! Second time though, his sacrifice went all out.
* NoSocialSkills: Implied to have a feral upbringing, being relatively wild in nature.

!'''Joy'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joy1_4915.png]]

A westerner with few allegiances who only joined the group for a quick buck and some thrills. He aids Gildong in kidnapping the lord of Kimhae, and later assaults the gold vault with Insu and Dorso.
----
* BadassInANiceSuit: In what is surely a case of AnachronismStew, his style is modeled after the "afro warrior" stereotype created during the 1970s Kung-Fu boom. In summation, he's a guy dressed in a ''1970's pastel suit, platform shoes with an afro and slick sideburns'' in a pseudo-fictional setting that is very much set in the late 1800s.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Betrays the Hwangbildang without a second thought if he thinks it'll make him a quick buck.
* CigarChomper: Always seen with a cigar in his mouth, being one of his character traits.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Rational and calm, but very condescending. He refers to [[spoiler:Wonsul]] exclusively as "Mr. Monster."
* JerkAss: An extremely unpleasant man when he finally starts talking.
* LightningBruiser: Is insanely fast. He would've put up one hell of a fight against [[spoiler:Wonsul]] if the latter wasn't an [[spoiler:invulnerable undead.]]
* NoNonsenseNemesis: He calmly tries to cut a deal with [[spoiler:Wonsul]]. When he refuses, he simply flicks his cigar, says "End of discussion." and immediately goes in for the kill.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: By his own admission, he doesn't care for the ideals of the others.
* TheQuietOne: Doesn't speak a whole lot. When he does, he comes off as a real jerk.
* ScaryBlackMan: Is quiet, unpredictable, extremely skilled and strong, and is a big guy to boot - fits the bill.
* SharpDressedMan: Probably the best-dressed character in the series, wearing a snazzy 70's suit.
* TheStoic: You won't see this guy express emotions - ''ever.'' At least not until [[spoiler:[[OhCrap he sees a dismembered, practically headless Won Sul stand back up and walk towards him...]]]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: In any normal fight, he would've won hands down. [[spoiler:Too bad he was fighting against Wonsul. An ''undead'' Wonsul at that.]]

!'''Insu'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/insu1_3368.png]]

A man looking for a good time, he joined the Hwalbindang on that pretext alone. He assaults the gold vault along with Insu and Dorso.
----
* EyesAlwaysShut: Only opens his eyes once, during his fight against [[spoiler:Wonsul.]]
* JerkAss: Not quite to Joy's level, but he too betrays the group without a second thought.
* KilledOffForReal: Was killed by Dorso right after he woke up - ironically stealing a kill from Wonsul.
* LightningBruiser: Like Joy, he too is deceptively fast and nimble.
* RazorFloss: His primary weapons are razor sharp wires that he manipulates into nets.
* RewardedAsATraitorDeserves: Dorso disposes of him the instant he wakes up for betraying the group.

!'''Cheol'''
[[quoteright:190:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cho1_4482.png]]

A big guy who joined the group to feed his village, capable of channeling his ki through his voice. He's none too bright.
----
* AntiVillain: Probably has the noblest intentions of the group, aside from Kye - wanting to feed his village.
* BigGuy: The largest member of the band.
* DumbMuscle: Once he's pissed he practically stops thinking altogether, to the extent that [[spoiler:hits his own ally Tae Yu with his explosive voice while trying to kill Munsu, blasting two of his limbs off in the process ''completely by accident''. Despite being warned not to do it immediately prior]].
* NoIndoorVoice: '''HIS POWER IS IN HIS VOICE, AS SUCH HE ALWAYS YELLS EVERYTHING.'''
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Received the least amount of character development - all we know about him is that he wants to feed his village, and that he's....a few cans short of a six-pack.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: One of the nobler members of the group. He joined solely to feed his people.

!'''Marlene von Lucid'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merlene1_7473.png

A famous swordswoman who came from Pretinica seeking a challenge in the foreign land of Jushin, involved in an attempt at invading Chillgap with a western mercenary army. She fought with Chun Hyang during that battle, but their fight was interrupted with Munsu's intervention. Later however, she soundly defeated her and put her entire existence and will into question. As fate would have it, her main reason for coming to Jushin was to find her old swordsmanship instructor.
----
* ActionGirl: An even ''bigger'' one than Chun Hyang!
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Jumps right in the nick of time to off Gallimard as he was about to kill Chun Hyang moments after she killed Aji Tae]].
* BloodKnight: She's not interested in sides or politics, only a good fight. Unless it's pure evil, like Aji Tae.
%%* CombatStilettos
* DaddysGirl: She still very much loves her dad, and is implied to have similar feelings for [[spoiler:Munsu]] seeing as he spent more time with her than Urias did.
* DefrostingIceQueen: ''Defrosting'' is a bit strong. But she ''does'' join the good fight in the end.
* HonorBeforeReason: Why she ultimately spares Chun Hyang.
%%* LadyOfWar
%%* OneManArmy
* TheRival: To Chun Hyang, naturally.
%%* RoyalRapier
* SpannerInTheWorks: Practically ''no one'' even knew she was in Jushin apart from Sando. [[spoiler:Considering she literally came out of nowhere and killed Gallimard right before he was about to kill Sando, she meets the end requirements.]]
* WildCard: Up until the last few chapters, she never actually joins any one side - preferring to look for strong opponents, whoever they may be. [[spoiler:And living up to WildCard status, she's the one who ends up killing Gallimard - the last vestige of Aji Tae's power, with one blow.]]

!'''Queen Windsor'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/windor1_8606.png

The Queen of Pretinica, she welcomed Munsu upon his arrival as Jushin's ambassador with open arms - unlike the other nobles - and found his stories of wars waged against monsters fascinating.
----
* BilingualBonus: While she doesn't reveal it at first, she's shown to be quite fluent in the eastern languages.
%%* CoolOldLady
* HiddenDepths: Easily sees through both Hart's lies and Kye Wol Hyang's tears and feint happiness. She also senses beforehand that something is amiss regarding the political situation in Jushin as well as the King's sudden arrival.
%%* TheHighQueen
%%* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* ShoutOut: Quite obviously a homage to House Windsor of England.

!'''General Urias von Lucid'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/urias1_5490.png

The General of Pretinica's army and Marlene's father. Following the events of the plot set in motion by Aji Tae and Baron Lou Ells, he personally assisted in giving Munsu a safe asylum in Pretinica.
----
* AbsentParent: He wasn't around a whole lot for Marlene's childhood. That said, they still have a loving relationship.
* BaitAndSwitch: While it initially looked he was ordered to hunt down Munsu following Aji Tae's scheme, he was in truth ordered by the Queen to help him lay low. [[spoiler:He also helped Munsu since he wanted him to raise Marlene in his stead.]]
%%* BigGood
* TheCavalry: Brings Pretinica's ''entire armada'' to Munsu's aid against the final battle.
%%* CoolOldGuy
%%* FourStarBadass
* HiddenHeartOfGold: He hides it by acting the part of TheStoic.
* OddFriendship: Many find it strange to discover that Munsu's only friend while he was on the lam in Pretinica was the stoic, no-nonsense general of their entire army. [[spoiler:Their friendship pays off ''big time'' in the final battle.]]
%%* ReasonableAuthorityFigure

!'''Hart'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hart1_8792.png

Marlene's companion and escort during her time in Jushin. He died protecting her from one of Chun Hyang's attacks. It turns out that in the past, he played a similar role for Munsu as escort and translator during his time in Pretinica. It was implied that he wholly knew the situation and relationship between Marlene, Munsu and Urias.
----
* CompletelyUnnecessaryTranslator: To Munsu, he ''was'' necessary. But he almost adhered his status as this when he lied to Queen Windsor, not realizing that she was fluent in Jushin's language.

!'''Hae Mo Su'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haemosu1_9220.png

The emperor of Jushin and Munsu's best friend. He gave Munsu the three-horse Mahai and appointed him as an Angyo Onshi.
----
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: [[spoiler:If you, like Aji Tae, thinks that it was child Hae Mo Su's wish to become Emperor that Aji Tae granted in exchange for being released from his seal, then Hae Mo Su is just as much guilty of the shits that went down in this series as much as Munsu or Aji Tae.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Only comes across this way when with Munsu. Aside from that, he's a generally ReasonableAuthorityFigure.
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:When he came across a sealed Aji Tae in a cave, the devil Aji Tae asked to be free in exchange for granting Hae Mo Su a wish. He promptly told him he wished to become the Emperor of Jushin. According to Aji Tae, it was thanks to his supernatural aids that Hae Mo Su and Munsu managed to rise up the ranks in Jushin and became the two most powerful men, but in light of Munsu's account of the wish-granting ceremony transpired in that cave, it becomes dubious as to ''who'' exactly made the deal, Hae Mo Su or Munsu. ]]
* DoggedNiceGuy: He's also in love with Kye Wol Hyang, but mostly respects her feelings for Munsu and gives them chance to be with each other.
* TheGoodKing: Until after Munsu retires from military service and travels to Pretinica as an ambassador with Kye Wol Hyang. In his best friend's and love interest's abscene, he becomes a KnightTemplar [[TheEmperor Emperor]] who orders mass murders of poor civilians and slum villages to make Jushin a more beautiful country. [[spoiler:But it was actually Aji Tae in his disguise]].
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Right at the moment he met Aji Tae for the first time.]]
* NiceGuy: Probably one of the few truly good-hearted characters in the series.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Of Hae Mo-su, the founder of the the ancient Korean kingdom of Buyeo.
%%* PosthumousCharacter
* ThePowerOfFriendShip: Once invoked this to save Munsu from ruining his life as a bandit.
%%* PowerTrio: With Kye Wol Hyang and Munsu in their childhood.
%%* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler:Used be an Angyo Onshi prior to playing politics. One of the reasons he did this was to slap Munsu out of his bandit life]].
%%* UnluckyChildhoodFriend
* WeHardlyKnewYe: [[spoiler:He was killed seconds after meeting Aji Tae in person, and the Hae Mo Su we see interacting with Wol Hyang and Munsu beyond that point was all Aji Tae assuming his personality and appearance.]]

!'''Kye Wol Hyang'''

Munsu's dead lover, who appears to be the source of his illness. She was allegedly killed by Munsu, but in truth suicide with his sword. Her half-sister Hong Gildong blames her death on Munsu.
----

* AllLoveIsUnrequited: From the way Munsu still loves her and remains heartbroken over her death in the present we know this isn't true, but there was a time when he kept rejecting her on the grounds of Hae Mo Su being a better suitor (by that time he already retired from the army), which caused her a great deal of stress. When he saw her suffering from her deadly illness, every effort of pretension got thrown out the window though.
%%* BreakTheCutie: And ''how''. Goddamn it, Aji Tae.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: [[spoiler:Tried to, but cruelly subverted. After going through the mess of putting a bullet through her head, she realized that [[ICannotSelfTerminate she was by then a zombie, thus she couldn't even die]]. Kye died by running herself through Munsu's sword, her head half blown off, in tears and broken-hearted at Munsu becoming a BrokenPedestal in her eyes.]]
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: [[spoiler:To Munsu, even after she's ''dead''! It helped him get over his HeroicBSOD and gave him the courage to face Aji Tae]].
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:By killing herself and not Munsu as per Aji Tae's advice (which supposedly would restore her body's original condition... but Aji Tae was probably lying anyway), she screwed up Aji Tae's spell in its entirety, causing Munsu to be immune to Aji Tae's exploding magic.]]

!'''Miss Hwang'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hwang2_8859.png

A fellow Angyo Onshi like Munsu. She is vain, suspicious and manipulative but all around a just person at the end of the day. Carries two two-horse Mahai bound by into one, effectively functioning as a 'four-horse' mahai.
----
%%* ActionGirl
* BadassArmy: For a while, her four-horse Gaksi unit easily trumped Munsu's phantom soldiers, both in efficiency ''and'' in that they can actually fight against monsters.
* BadassNormal: While she doesn't actually participate into many of her own fights, the fact that she's an Angyo Onshi alone qualifies her.
* CoolBigSis: To Su later in the series, and a ''considerably'' lesser extent to her Bang Ja [[JerkAss Eul Paso]].
* KilledOffForReal: Dies in Aji Tae's massive, final blast wave.
* ManipulativeBastard: She has absolutely no qualms resorting to tactics just as dirty or ''dirtier'' than Munsu's to get the job done.
%%* MsFanservice
* SignatureHeadgear: Her cowboy hat is her signature style.

!'''Eul Paso'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eulpaso1_9159.png

A former soldier of Jushin who used to be in the White Tiger division, a group of soldiers specializing in polearms and spears. He became Aji Tae's lackey after the fall of Jushin, having given up his spear in favor of firearms.
----
* AlmightyJanitor: He ''used'' be high up in the ranks in Jushin's army, but afterwards despite his skill, he was nothing more than a miniscule lackey for Won Hyo and Wonsul. Hell, even after joining Miss Hwang he was still nothing more than a ''valet''. All given, he's still extremely dangerous and skilled in combat.
* BloodKnight: Compared to Wonsul, who was struggling with both post-traumatic stress and keeping his killing instincts in check, Paso wholly embraced them. One of the reasons he joined Aji Tae
* TheBrute: He's a legitimate threat to most opponents, but he lacks any superhuman abilities and is typically treated with low regard by allies and enemies alike; while working for Aji Tae he's little more than a thuggish MookLieutenant for [[CoDragons Wonsul and Won Hyo]], and after switching sides he's basically Miss Hwang's dogsbody.
* CoolShades: Goes through several pairs as they [[RunningGag keep getting broken.]]
* TheGunslinger: After joining Aji Tae, he opts to fight with firearms.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: He starts off as an officer in Jushin's army, then switches to Aji Tae's side, then enters a tenuous alliance with Munsu after becoming Miss Hwang's Bang Ja. It should be noted that morality did not factor into any of these changes, he only cares about his own survival and [[IgnoredEnamoredUnderling getting into Miss Hwang's pants.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: Blows up half of Aji Tae's remaining forces with a suicide bomb.
* JerkAss: Nope, he ain't a JerkWithAHeartOfGold either. He's just an old fashioned jackass.
* MoreDakka: He ''used'' to be a master of the polearm, but these days prefers to get the job done with a Thompson and old fashioned dynamite.
* TortureTechnician: One of his specialties while working at the Melting Path Penitentiary, the other being rounding up and/or executing escapees.

!'''Yeong Sil'''
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yeongsil1_5762.png

The greatest martial artist and Tae Kwon Do master in Jushin. Like Eul Paso, he too was a colored soldier under Munsu's command as well as engineer. Out of everyone, he was the first one who started noticing strange happenings around Aji Tae, and was also the first one to have joined him - purely out of fear and dread. Some time after, he ran away and went into hiding working with Master Mito, continuing making inventions that would make people's lives better. [[EpicFail Most of them don't.]]
----
* AntiHero: He was the first to join Aji Tae out of fear. And was also the first to defect out of horror.
* TheAtoner: What he became after he defected.
* AxCrazy: Essentially ''forced'' himself to become one of Aji Tae's psychotic lackeys just so he wouldn't kill him.
* TheBigGuy: The tallest character in the series. He's also pretty brawny too.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Definitely a complete weirdo when he isn't a total badass.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Just about the only character who can match Dorso in raw strength.
* GadgeteerGenius: On top of being the greatest martial artist in Jushin, he's also its greatest inventor. That said, half of his inventions don't work or just outright blow up. Some of them however even Munsu adopts into his strategy.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Munsu calls him out on his tendency to rapidly change allegiances. He starts off serving Jushin, then switches to Aji Tae's side, then back to the good guys, where he firmly remains until the end.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Of ''Jang Yeong-sil'', a 15th Century engineer who despite being born a serf possessed a keen scientific mind and his many inventions earnt him a place at the royal palace. However his fame was short lived after a palanquin the King commissioned him to build broke in a freak accident and Jang's political rivals managed to get him expelled from the royal court.
* OhCrap: He was the first to discover Aji Tae's abilities. Though, this didn't really kick in until after he invented his telescope and decided to use it to spy on Aji Tae during Munsu's retirement ceremony. Aji Tae was roughly half a mile away from the telescope as he was looking through it - Aji Tae simply ''glances at him'' and tells him to "Stop staring." Yikes.

A blacksmith who lives on Mt. Chillgap with Yeong Sil, said to be the only smith able to forge and repair Mahais. Munsu visits him to repair his Mahai after Wonsul sliced it in half. During Jushin's past, he was the greatest summoner alive as well as a direct advisor to Hae Mo Su. Despite this, Munsu never actually met him (or even knew about him) until after he visited Chillgap.

He later takes on Tae Yu as an apprentice summoner and begins teaching him high-level magic in preperation for the war against Aji Tae.
----
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Can lift boulders ''four-times'' his size.
%%* CoolOldGuy
* DisabilitySuperpower: He lost his eyes in an encounter with Aji Tae. That said, he ''already'' had crippling eyesight due to diabetes so it made no difference to him - his other senses by that point had already been honed beyond normal. He uses this as his proof that Aji Tae is ''far'' from completely omniscient: He attempted to blind a man ''who was already blind.''
* MiniatureSeniorCitizen: ''Do not'' let his short stature fool you. This old man will gladly give you a new asshole if need be.
