!!Pontiff Xavi
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zabii_827.bmp]]
-->Voiced by: Creator/KozoShioya (Japanese), Lee Tockar (''Devil Kings'')

->''"Open your heart and welcome Xavi's loooooove!"''

A foreign missionary who makes it his goal to convert all of Japan to his Religion of [[LoveFreak LOVE!]] Is a big believer in love through superior firepower and boasts some impressive technology. He is based on [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Xavier#Japan St. Francis Xavier]], the man who brought Catholicism to Japan.

His name in ''Devil Kings'' is ''Q-ball''.
----
* BadassBandolier: He wears a stole filled with cannon shells.
* BadassPreacher: He's more than willing to back up his words with firepower.
* {{BFG}}: Wields two handheld cannons that he can also use as tonfas and can function as flamethrowers. His Limit Break also drops a Flak Cannon from the sky which is capable of obliterating bosses.
* {{Camp}}: Most of his followers act like this. Notably, the Xavist faction color is a rainbow.
* [[DefeatMeansFriendship Defeat Means Conversion]]: In his campaigns in ''[=SB2=]'' he goes up against Motonari and Yoshihiro. When fighting Xavi they show up as converts (as "Sunday" and "Chesto").
* DualWielding
* AGodAmI: Is the center figure of worship in his religion, although he's a more benevolent case, unlike Motonari.
* {{Gonk}}: A mild case, but still noticeable in a cast otherwise dominated by TheBeautifulElite.
* GratuitousEnglish: Him and any of his converts, plus some occasional GratuitousSpanish.
* HollywoodToneDeaf: His singing has been known to cause headaches, fainting, insanity, and spontaneous conversion.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Positively towers over Itsuki. Plus he is almost as tall as Hideyoshi (and that's saying something).
* FunnyForeigner: Is usually played as the resident comedic relief fond of dancing with a certain fascination of Japan. In ''Devil Kings'' he even has a curious Italian accent.
* LargeHam
* LoveFreak: Preaches about love all the time...while [[ChurchMilitant blasting heretics to pieces]] (probably a nod to St. Xavier's intolerance and uncompromising attitude, such as his instructions to the newly converted Christians to destroy a number of Japanese temples and shrines).
* MalevolentMugshot: Whether or not he's actually malevolent is questionable, but anything to do with Xavism is generally going to have his appearance scattered everywhere, from the faction logo to robot duplicates.
* {{Malaproper}}: Frequently gets phrases and idioms wrong because, well, he's ''foreign''. Here's a good example from his stage:
--> '''Xavi''': You're trapped like barrel in a fish!
** And in his story mode in ''2'', we get this pretty nice exchange between him and Yoshihiro:
---> '''Yoshihiro''': Xavism? Now what on Earth is ''that''?
---> '''Xavi''': It's the ultimate pressure...I mean, ''treasure'', of LOVE!
---> (Halfway through the stage)
---> '''Yoshihiro's Mooks''': Aaaargh! Run! The pressure of love is coming this way!
%%* MightyGlacier: Slowest character of the series, bar none.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Of St. Xavier. His full name is never given, unlike all the other characters, probably to avoid offending the Catholic Church.
* OccidentalOtaku: Somewhat; he has a fascination with ninja.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: His look like [[BrainBleach miniature versions of himself with curly blond hair, wearing diapers]].
* ParodyReligion: Xavism is a rather overt parody of Catholicism. It would possibly count as a ScamReligion, but Xavi seems to genuinely believe his own crazy-talk.
* PlayingWithFire
* PutOnABus: Apparently he went home by the time of the third game. However, portraits of him are scattered around Sorin's stages. He remains missing in the fourth game.
* RecoilBoost: He can use his cannons to fly by using them as jet boosters.
* TheRival: To Itsuki. They have some kind of religious rivalry going on between them.
* RobotMe: Often uses Robot doubles of himself as back-ups. Sorin can build a robo-Xavi with his first skill.
* SacrificialLamb: Like Honganji Kennyo, the Pontiff's sole appearance in the anime is as he's being killed to demonstrate a character's villany - Oda Nobunaga's in this case.
* ShoutOut: Delivers one to ''Franchise/StarWars'' in ''Devil Kings'' during your battle with him.
-->'''Q-Ball:''' *''in an Italian accent''* I find your lack of faith disturbing.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Up until ''Samurai Heroes'' his name was usually romanised as "Zabii" or "Zabby".
* StoutStrength: Is quite clearly one of the heavier characters and packs quite the punch.

!!Otomo Sorin
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sb4_render_sorin_7870.png]]
-->Voiced by: Creator/NoriakiSugiyama (Japanese), Jay D. Stone (game), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (anime) (English)

->''"All together now, [[GratuitousEnglish let's happy ceremony]]!"''

Introduced in the third game, he is a powerful young daimyo of Kyushu and Xavi devotee, who plans to unify the land under Xavi's religion of LOVE.
-----
* AnachronismStew: Muneshige and Sorin appear to have switched birth dates in-game, given that Sorin in RealLife was 37 (almost 38 even, Sorin was born on January 1530 and Muneshige on December 1567) years ''older'' than Muneshige.
* AscendedExtra: Becomes playable from ''Utage'' onwards.
* BadBoss: Seems to be focused entirely on Muneshige.
* BossSubtitles: "Sorin Otomo - Truly Believes"
* CrossDressingVoices: In the English dub. It's to the point where you think he's actually a girl as opposed to a high-pitched guy like in the Japanese dub.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Sorin will, if left to his own devices, convert all of Kyushu to Xavism and enlist Yoshihiro and Kanbe. It's also a major part of his fighting style, in which he can convert mooks in the middle of the fight to augment his moves.
* DanceBattler
** GratuitousDiscoSequence: Which forces enemy soldiers to dance along with it.
* DreadfulMusician[=/=]SuckinessIsPainful: His tank's singing creates musical notes that physically damage enemies.
** Though his own singing is actually pretty decent.
* DuetBonding: With [[spoiler:Motonari]]! It's one of the most disturbing and hilarious things you'll ever see/hear.
* EvilBrit: In the English dub... [[OohMeAccentsSlipping Possibly]].
* FightingClown: He has decent crowd-control capabilities as well as being capable of [[DeathOfAThousandCuts stunlocking bosses to death]].
* GiantPoofySleeves: Which defy all the laws of nature and physics.
* GratuitousEnglish: Almost better at it than Masamune.
* HomoeroticSubtext: His stage is covered with portraits of him and Xavi surrounded by roses. Real subtle...
* {{Jerkass}}: He treats Muneshige ''badly'' to say the least, even banishing him just for trying to speak his mind. It doesn't help that he's inherited Xavi's fanatical approach.
* KillItWithFire: His mini-tank in Mecha mode sprouts flamethrowers that can be used as jet boosters.
* LightEmUp
* LoopedLyrics: Which have the ability to brainwash people into your loyal converts!
--> Xavi Xavi Xavi Xavi Xaaaavi~ Sorin Sorin Sorin Sorin Sooorin~
* MiniMecha: His main weapon is a miniature tank with Xavi's likeness on it.
* MovesetClone: Of Xavi, sort of. Many of his moves, especially his 3rd Super Attack, are obviously styled after Xavi's, but not direct copies of them.
* TheMusicMeister: He's somehow able to get people around him to sing with him.
* PsychoSupporter: He's basically your stereotypical religious fanatic.
* ReligiousBruiser
* TheRemnant: Arguably. Xavi is nowhere to be seen after Sorin takes charge, though apparently he just went on holiday.
* SissyVillain: Comes with being a Xavist. His voice doesn't help either (particularly the [[CrossDressingVoices English voice]]).
* SkipOfInnocence: It's his walking animation.
* SpinAttack: His basic combo has him spinning around in the tank until it starts spinning out of control, at which point he "fixes" it with a stomp that causes a shockwave.
* SuperMode: His MiniMecha mode. With it, Sorin upgrades himself from frantic spinning and ear-bursting prayer to using variations of Xavi's moves. He also becomes insanely fast when using his flamethrowers as boosters.
* TalkativeLoon: He's a passionate public speaker and if he's not ranting then he's singing. At least he's better at it than [[HollywoodToneDeaf Xavi]].
* TankGoodness: His weapon is a tank with Xavi's face on it. With his final skill, it gains robotic limbs and EyeBeams.
* YouHaveFailedMe: [[spoiler:Muneshige's ending in ''Utage'' has Sorin angrily chasing Muneshige for slapping him.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tachibana Muneshige]]
!!Tachibana Muneshige
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sb4_render_muneshige_3195.png]]
-->Voiced by: Creator/TetsuInada (Japanese), Creator/KyleHebert (English)

->''"All people are slaves to something, be it their lord, their general, or some other unfortunate fate..."''

New character introduced in the third game. A vassal of the Otomo clan, noted for his bravery and strength both in battle and everyday life.
-----
* AnachronismStew: His weapons are a pair of chainsaws.
* AscendedExtra: Became playable from ''Utage'' onward.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Despite other characters commenting on how powerful and intimidating his Raikiri are, Muneshige wishes they were more practical to wield.
* BadassCape: Has one on each shoulder.
* BareHandedBladeBlock: He does this to Naotora if the two end up encountering each other.
* BarrierBustingBlow: How he makes his entrance at the Battle of Hetsugigawa in ''3''.
* BecomingTheMask: In the fourth game, after spending some time as Jumbo-Xavi, Muneshige admits that he actually kind of likes working in Xavi-Land.
* BeleagueredAssistant: He's generally forced to play the StraightMan to his lord, save for the few times he's forced to humor him.
* BigWhat: Gives out a huge "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH?!" whenever Sorin says, does, or forces him to do something ridiculous, usually Xavi-related.
* BossSubtitles: "Muneshige Tachibana - Loyal to the End"
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: He's a ''lovely'', caring, peaceful and noble man under that hulking, bearded exterior. Shame, being a fearsome samurai and all, he can't show that side of himself often.
* ButtMonkey: No matter who he works for, he will be treated like complete '''shit'''.
** He also has to deal with his abusive lord's antics, all to be reunited with his wife and serve his clan based on the virtue of loyalty. Poor, big ol' Muneshige...
*** In the fourth game, he's forced to be the mascot of Sorin's Xavism-themed amusement park, meaning that he has to wear a giant Xavi costume, complete with a caricature of Xavi's head.
* ChainsawGood
* CoolHelmet: A zunari-style helmet with a circle-shaped ornament attached to it.
* CoolOldGuy: Is friendly with Ujimasa, Yoshihiro and Shingen.
* CulturedBadass: Keeps a journal and is currently engrossed in ''Literature/TheTaleOfGenji''. He would also rather talk this out over tea.
* DidIJustSayThatOutLoud
-->"Afterwards I'll have a bath and rest well!... Er, no, I mean, there must be a mistake..."
* DiedStandingUp: His death animation.
* TheDogBitesBack[=/=]GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: His story in ''Utage'' begins when he finally loses patience with Sorin and ''slaps him!''
** YankTheDogsChain: Unfortunately for him, this just makes Sorin pissed enough to kick him out. [[spoiler:And send a few torpedoes his way.]]
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: It's probably no coincidence that the map featuring the game's treatment of Christianity also features a character you essentially force to commit [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fumi-e fumi-e]].
* TheDragon: To Sorin.
** DragonInChief: In a manner of speaking. In any of the story paths in the third game where the Otomo clan is significant, it's because someone wants to talk to Muneshige, and not Sorin. Muneshige is completely loyal to Sorin, however.
** NobleTopEnforcer
* DualWielding: Of, it should be repeated, '''chainsaws'''.
* AFatherToHisMen: Says that he wants his troops to bond as a family, since this is how he sees them. Aww.
* TheFettered: Sorin has to be beaten up by Yoshihiro before he even lets Muneshige leave the castle.
* GlassCannon: His normal (as in without personal item) fully charged mode gives him a decent attack boost and a massive attack speed boost at the expense of his ability to block and sidestep, thus making him quite vulnerable to attacks.
* HenpeckedHusband: Muneshige's wife is apparently far stronger and more skilled than him, has never lost an argument and regularly beats him up. His letters imply he does love her though.
* HonorBeforeReason: Will not take the shortcuts in his stage once the player activates them due to them having a portrait of Sorin on them, which would mean stepping upon the face of his lord. If the player makes it to Sorin before him, he'll be stuck on the other side unable to help.
* IdealHero: Practically reads like a checklist of the idealised {{Samurai}}, being loyal, devoted, humble, yet cultured, wise and kind to his subordinates... [[SubvertedTrope And he serves one of the most ungrateful jerks in the game]].
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: A move of his has him impale an enemy with one of his chainsaws and then electrocuting them with it.
* ImplacableMan: He's the second hardest character to stun, after Tadakatsu, and his direct attacks are almost impossible to block.
** Just to rub it in, dueling Muneshige involves him blocking your blows, and doing nothing else unless you lose. Despite this he's the second-hardest character to duel, and Tadakatsu is actually hitting you ''back''.
* InnerMonologue: Usually involves the Raikiri and/or his wife. And constant despair over his current situation.
* LightningBruiser: Equip his personal item and he will be in fully charged state permanently (basically making him hit harder and A LOT faster) while still being able to block and sidestep. And he uses lightning.
* MightyGlacier: As a boss, he's ''just'' slow enough that you can outrun him if not willing to face his saw. The game encourages it. As a playable character, he's upgraded to standard Mighty Glacier speed and while his attack speed is still incredibly sluggish, they all feature multi-hit properties.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Clearly isn't very happy with Sorin's fascination with Xavism, or the way he treats him, but remains unfailingly loyal to him regardless. Either that or he's just given up.
** According to his ending, it seems that after being forced to [[WalkingTheEarth Walk The Earth]] he decided he misses his lord after all.
* NamedWeapons: His Raikiri, translated as "Lightning Cutter/Lightning Edge" in the English version. Historically, Raikiri was a sword owned by Muneshige's adoptive father Dōsetsu (historically, it wasn't a chainsaw either).
* RedBaron: "Thunder King". Well-deserved, especially given half his moveset involves calling lightning to electrocute people.
* ReluctantWarrior: He talks quite a bit about wanting to give up being a samurai and live peacefully.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: He has both traits in him (basically the physique and fighting abilities of a Manly Man and the personality of a Sensitive Guy).
* ShockAndAwe: And did we mention his Raikiri are ''lightning'' chainsaws?
* ShouldersOfDoom
* SparklingStreamOfTears: Also TearsOfJoy, when he is finally reunited with Sorin in Kyoto after being sent away. [[spoiler:Turns out Sorin wasn't quite as pleased to see him.]]
* ThereWasADoor: Makes a habit of smashing holes in stone walls whilst chasing you through the castle, since all the bridges have portraits of Sorin on them.
* ThrowTheDogABone: Like Kanbe, joining up with Yoshihiro, like he does in Yoshihiro's blue and green paths, is more or less the best thing that can happen to him.
* TruthInTelevision: The real Muneshige [[http://www.ohana.co.jp/e/museum/photo/pt_arm02.jpg actually wore that helmet]].
* UndyingLoyalty: Despite all the crap he puts up with, he's loyal to a fault to his lord and will only leave his side if given permission.
* UnfortunateNames: His Xavism baptism name (forced on him by Sorin, even though he's not a Xavist) is "Gallop". Mune... er, "Gallop" decides to wear it with as much pride he can muster since his lord gave it to him.
* YankTheDogsChain: His ending, where it seems that Sorin has forgiven him and wants to take him back. [[spoiler:Turns out he's just looking for revenge. Nonetheless, he seems to be content at things going back to normal.]]
* YellowLightningBlueLightning: His lightning is yellow unlike everyone else's blue.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: Isn't exactly bursting with joy when Sorin compliments him by saying he's acting more like a Xavist.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tachibana Ginchiyo]]
!!Tachibana Ginchiyo

Muneshige's domineering, currently absent wife, whom he loves and fears in equal parts.
-----
* DualWielding ChainsawGood: And she is BETTER at it than Muneshige!
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Although Ginchiyo's name is common knowledge, in-game Muneshige always refers to her as "the wife".
* HairTriggerTemper: Or else just perpetually enraged.
* IronLady: Her husband thinks she'd be a much better leader than him, at any rate.
* MundaneUtility: She uses the Lightning Cutters to prune her bonsai trees.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Quite possibly. Muneshige notes that she is much stronger than she appears to be.
* TantrumThrowing: When Muneshige annoys her she starts throwing ''chainsaws'' at him.
* TheUnseen: She's often mentioned, but never makes an appearance. Funnily enough Muneshige is the only one who seems to notice her absence.
** Historically Ginchiyo and Muneshige were separated (along with their clan) during the late Sengoku Era for political reasons.
