[[folder: Makoto Itou]]
!!'''Makoto Itou'''

----
* AboveTheInfluence: He's still a horny teenager, but he ''can'' control his carnal urges on occasion. In one example, [[spoiler:Otome will proposition use of the break-room during the school festival. If Makoto has been pursuing Kotonoha exclusively up to that point, he'll turn Otome down (albeit rather curtly)]]. In another example, [[spoiler:Kotonoha will proposition sex to Makoto on the school roof. In this case, it's up to the player to turn her down. Should the player choose no, Makoto will explain himself by simply stating that he wasn't feeling like it. It's not exactly the kindest or noblest of reasons, but it's still a stark contrast to the horny {{Jerkass}} he is in the anime.]]
** Tries to be this in the School Days manga, but ultimately gave in to his feeling for Sekai...
* AbsurdlyYouthfulFather: Can become this in some of the endings.
* AdaptationalVillainy: He's not exactly a saint in the original visual novel even if you try to play him as nicely as possible, but in the anime, he's a lecherous, self-absorbed, debauched asshole. The ''Cross Days'' manga takes this even further, turning him into a sexual predator.
* AffectionateNickname: Will be called "Makoto-kun" by Kotonoha in ''School Days'', and "Mako-chan" by Setsuna in ''Summer Days''/''Shiny Days'', after he starts dating either girl.
* AlasPoorYorick: [[spoiler:The final scene of the anime, with Kotonoha sailing off into the sunset with Makoto's head.]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: ''Cross Days''' [[spoiler:"Only You"]] ending aside, Makoto can also worriedly ask Taisuke if he's turned on by exposed pecs and toned biceps. Considering that Taisuke was insisting at this point that he wasn't into homosexuality, it makes you wonder why Makoto would think to ask that...
* AntiHero: More or less so in the visual novel. He really is as nice as he appears (as opposed to the BitchInSheepsClothing he is in the anime), but he really has no functioning concept on how to treat the opposite gender properly. His social ineptitude and indecisiveness cause him to bounce back and forth between his two love interests, not realizing how much pain he's causing in the process. Even on routes where he'll stay mostly faithful to one girl, he'll inevitably break the other girl's heart by ignoring her.
* AssholeVictim: In the anime, he spends nearly the entirety of the series toying with the hearts of all the girls around him and cheating on Sekai while showing no regard for anything but satisfying his lust, and dumps Sekai by French-kissing Kotonoha in front of her to rub it in. [[spoiler:This gets Sekai to snap and [[DeathByWomanScorned stab him to death]], a fate he basically brought upon himself through his philandering.]]
* TheAtoner:
** Makoto tries to be this at the end of the manga, [[spoiler:only to be way too late due to him being hospitalized]].
** He also tries this in the anime. [[spoiler:After realizing the damage he has done to Kotonoha, he commits to her fully in order to make up for his mistakes. Unfortunately, the methods he used to break up with Sekai were… harsh, to say the least.]]
** In the game ending where [[spoiler:Kotonoha kills herself, he decides to part ways with Sekai and become a hospital nurse]].
** In Yuuki's route in ''Cross Days'', he changes midway instead of at the end, for obvious reasons.
* BerserkButton: He absolutely '''loathes''' bullying. See BullyHunter and [[EvenEvilHasStandards Even Jerks Have Standards]].
* BigNo: Makoto, at the end of the ''Valentine Days'' {{OVA}}, when he finds out the huge box of chocolates he received were not from Setsuna, but from [[spoiler:Taisuke]]. Upon discovery, not only does [[spoiler:Taisuke]] get surrounded by [[BishieSparkle Bishie Sparkles]], but [[spoiler:[[BromanticFoil he cannot hide the shyness in his]] [[GayOption now extremely feminine face]]]].
* BisexualLoveTriangle: In ''Cross Days''' "Only You" ending, [[spoiler:it's implied that Makoto will be in one with Kotonoha and Yuuki]].
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In the anime, Makoto seems like a plain, harmless, and unassuming teen, but he's eventually revealed to be a manipulative, two-faced, and decietful sociopath who shamelessly hurts and emotionally abuses his girlfriend, who's eventually broken because of him.
** Also his ''Cross Days'' manga self.
* BrokenPedestal: To Otome in the anime. Her feelings for Makoto are based on [[LovingAShadow her image of him from back when they were in Junior High]]. [[spoiler:She's quite heartbroken when she realizes how much of a douchebag he's become.]]
* BrotherSisterIncest: [[spoiler:Can end up having sex with Sekai and Setsuna's mothers, Youko and Mai, who are his half-sisters.]]
* BullyHunter: One of his few unequivocally positive qualities. He protects Kotonoha from Otome and her GirlPosse in one game ending, [[spoiler:gets beaten up to defend "Yuu"]] in ''Cross Days'', and apparently, Setsuna fell for him because [[RescueRomance he once protected her from some bullies]].
* CantGetAwayWithNuthin: Taken to its logical extreme; Makoto is caught every time he tries to secretly nail a girl. Even [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] with a bit of [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic Setsuna's reflection]], which most people missed.
* CantTakeCriticism: A mild example, but Makoto can get rather pensive when someone tries to correct his behavior. He shows little patience for Kotonoha's qualms with his behavior on dates in the anime and some visual novel routes and has little patience for Sekai's teasing when he's worried she might have told someone about his crush.
* ChickMagnet: To the ridiculous extreme. The list includes — at various points in the series — Kotonoha, Setsuna, Otome, Sekai, Karen, Inori, Kokoro, Noan, Orahu, the Nijou twins, Ai, Youko, Mai, Manami, Hikari, Roka, Nanami, Minami, Natsumi, Kumi, and Reisei. Naturally, he is totally oblivious, and it's to the point most guys dislike him.
* ChivalrousPervert: [[AvertedTrope Averted]] in the anime adaptation and in the ''Cross Days'' manga. In the visual novel, while he typically has no problems screwing anyone who gives him an invitation, it's shown that he's at least capable of putting someone else's feelings above his own. In one route, [[spoiler:he'll temporarily break up with Kotonoha because he feels that his carnal desires are hurting her]]. Of course, exactly how chivalrous her turns out be depends entirely on the player's choices.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: Courtesy of Setsuna in one ending of ''Shiny Days''.
* DeathByWomanScorned: [[spoiler:Probably the most infamous example in anime. Also happens to him in some visual novel endings as well.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Less so in the manga, ''much'' more so in the anime and perhaps in the games, if you pick the [[SchmuckBait right options]]. The average harem anime protagonist is more or less seen as a RidiculouslyAverageGuy who's more often than not an AccidentalPervert who may or may not actually have [[AllMenArePerverts perverted tendencies]], is a ChasteHero and CluelessChickMagnet, is able to attract women through his being a generally NiceGuy, and has character ''traits'' but not so much an actual personality — so as to allow the male viewers to [[AudienceSurrogate insert themselves into the role]]. Makoto takes all of these tropes and elements and eviscerates them completely. To wit:
** Being a RidiculouslyAverageGuy at his age has been played to its logical conclusion and he's more or less a HormoneAddledTeenager whose perversity and lust incrementally increases the more girls throw themselves at him, while his young age and inexperience means that even at his best, he can be InnocentlyInsensitive.
** His obliviousness to love is [[JustifiedTrope justified]] by how he ends up gradually seeing the girls as sex objects and less as actual people, which isn't helped by the fact that many girls do end up attracted to him in the long run. His refusal to commit to any one girl is depicted as shameless philandering, and when he finally does choose one girl (Kotonoha) and reject the other main girl (Sekai), he does not do it gently, but intentionally and cruelly breaks her heart, [[DeathByWomanScorned immediately leading to his death]].
** His status as a plain old NiceGuy gets hampered over time due to his lust for more women, and gradually becomes more of a mask he uses to seduce women rather than a genuine kindness; in some instances where the mask slips, this drives them away from him.
** He appears to be just a boring FlatCharacter initially, but his personality adapts for better or for worse depending on his faithfulness to whoever the player chooses for him to romance. But in the anime, this is thoroughly demolished and he is taken to the absolute extreme negative side of the scale — he becomes outright sociopathic in his pursuit of sex, and when he finds it in himself to turn things around for the better, he still shows himself to be a monstrous and cruel person whose lack of respect for people shines glaringly through. Finally, his self-insert nature becomes a big case of ThisLoserIsYou.
* DependingOnTheWriter: His characterization varies wildly across all appearances. (Most of them are not favorable.)
** In the original novel, he's an indecisive, socially inept [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent average student]] who can range from an unrepentant CasanovaWannabe to a relatively decent human being who devotes himself to one girl and only one girl.
** In ''[[VisualNovel/ShinyDays Summer/Shiny Days]]'', he's a [[TheGadFly trolling]], sex-crazed [[ThePornomancer pornomancer]] who is, ironically, [[CluelessChickMagnet completely clueless regarding all of the girls who want to get into his pants]].
** In the anime, he is someone addicted to the thrill of sex and nails pretty much anyone who gives him an invitation.
** In the manga, he's an undeniable NiceGuy who actually does care for both Kotonoha and Sekai. He slips up ''once'', but he comes to [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone regret his actions]]. Unfortunately, the remorse comes too little, too late.
** In the ''Cross Days'' manga, he's a depraved sexual predator who actually attempts to ''rape'' someone.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: In some ''Cross Days'' endings, if Yuuki continues to pursue him, he starts falling in love with "Yuu". However, if Yuuki pursues another girl or [[spoiler:can't overcome his fear that Makoto might not like him]], then Yuuki can make "Yuu" disappear forever. The only other girl he can commit to is Kotonoha.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makoto_wtffff_6533.jpg Makoto]] is shown with these eyes in a few bad endings of ''Cross Days''.
* DullSurprise: He apparently lacks facial expression unless things are getting too stressful. A good example is one of the bad endings of the original game: he watches [[spoiler:Kotonoha murdering Sekai with a saw]], and his look to [[spoiler:Kotonoha]] immediately afterwards is one of vague bemusement. Thankfully, they fixed this in ''HQ''.
* EnemyMine: Mild example: [[spoiler:He'll team up with Kotonoha's bully Otome in order to get the former to stop harassing him.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Makoto's a callous and manipulative hedonist, but he hates bullying. If he catches you bullying someone, he'll call you out on it. In fact, given that ''School Days'' has very few ''other'' people who act like this, this is strongly implied to be '''the''' reason so many girls fall for him in the first place: he once protected Setsuna from bullies, causing her to fall for him; he's one of the few people in school who's nice to Kotonoha; Sekai frequently witnessed Makoto being nice, etc.
** Sort of played with in a later episode of the anime in his last meeting with Setsuna. [[spoiler:After he starts coming on to her, she ''begs'' him to remain faithful to Sekai and offers to sleep with him right then and there if he agrees. This is enough to give Makoto obvious pause, but it's never shown what his answer was or whether or not he and Setsuna did end up sleeping together, and he definitely didn't remain faithful to Sekai in any case.]]
** In the true ending of ''Cross Days'', he is disgusted at Taisuke, who [[spoiler:continues to gang-bang "Yuu". Makoto stands up to him, but gets beaten up as a result]].
** There's an interesting subversion in ''School Days'' and ''School Days HQ'' with Taisuke. In some of the routes, Makoto can witness Kotonoha being bullied far earlier than the lunchbox incident at the end. Specifically, during the festival day, Makoto can witness Otome and her posse making fun of Kotonoha for supposedly having lied about Makoto being her boyfriend. If Makoto doesn't call them out at this point, ''Taisuke'' of all people will do so instead. The subversion in this case is that the "standards" ''lead to'' the "evil", since it's only in routes where Taisuke calls out the bullies that [[spoiler:he ends up raping Kotonoha, due to the bullies telling him that girls like forceful men]].
** Barring the ''Cross Days'' manga, he will never outright [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rape]] someone, though he does still have some lecherous tendencies (moreso in the anime and spinoff games).
*** And in the I Love You/Forever path, he sexually assaults Sekai.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Everyone wants him, and we mean ''everyone''. [[spoiler:Taisuke]] from the "Valentine Days" OVA and [[spoiler:Yuuki]] in a few routes of ''Cross Days''.
* EverythingButTheGirl: Failing to get the true ending for Yuuki's route results in this because either [[spoiler:Yuuki stops crossdressing and "Yuu" is never seen again or Yuuki's gender is revealed and he runs away before Makoto can confess his true feelings]].
* {{Flanderization}}: Arguably the case in the Anime and in the ''Cross Days'' manga compared to how he was in the original ''School Days''. In the first novel, Makoto was portrayed as someone who ''could'' become addicted to sex and be a complete jerkwad to others, but it was portrayed as largely a result of [[InnocentlyInsensitive not having a good grasp on reading people or talking to them]] combined with being extremely indecisive, anxious, and wanting to take the least troublesome path (though whether for himself or others varies). His more angry side only came out when he got fed up by the tug-of-war Sekai and Kotonoha were fighting over him, and he was so lost on what to do that even friggin' ''Taisuke'' could have more of an idea of how to proceed. Come the anime, though, and all his negative traits — lack of commitment, sex-addiction, insensitivity to others — are amplified to be his defining traits, without any of the contexts that made them more redeemable in the VN — [[{{Jerkass}} Otome]] can even be considered to lampshade this when noting that the Makoto in front of her and the Makoto she remembers are two separate people. The ''Summer Days'' version of him goes further by making him pretty much a depraved Omnisexual, but even that is nothing compared to the ''Cross Days''' manga, where all his negative traits aren't just maxed out but are portrayed as ''deliberately done'' rather than him just not understanding others' feelings.
* FreudianExcuse: His parents are divorced [[note]]and his father is an asshole the likes of which Makoto would never reach[[/note]] and his mother is always busy with work as a nurse, so a few abandonment issues might be there. Compare to his half-brother Ayumu Inou [[spoiler:(who was repeatedly raped by Asagi Inou (his aunt) since childhood and pretty much turned into a sex beast before being rescued by his sister, Kagura)]], Shun Hazama [[spoiler:(whose mother, Hatsuka, although a loving mother herself, seems to prefer Tomaru over her son's opinion or decision)]], or even Kei Ogata [[spoiler:(physically and psychologically tormented by their father, later blackmailed into a relationship with Midori Nagawa or Yumi Matou (both may LoveRedeems in their true path))]].
* TheGadfly: Especially in ''Shiny Days'', where he can purposefully engage in most BlatantLies without batting an eyelash, just [[ItAmusedMe to mess with people]]. It varies from innocent jokes, to lying about being lovers with his six-ish year old sister. Doing the latter sort of thing generally leads to a bad end, but the reactions can be amusing nonetheless.
%%* GayOption: For [[spoiler:Yuuki]] in ''Cross Days''.
* HandsomeLech: In the anime, he has few redeeming qualities other than his looks.
* HateSink: His anime incarnation, unlike his other incarnations, is a DeconstructedCharacterArchetype of the HaremGenre lead who is deliberately made to be an unlikable VillainProtagonist. Though appearing to be a nice enough guy who's just looking for the love of Kotonoha, it is gradually made clear that he is really TheSociopath looking only to satisfy his ExtremeLibido. To that end, he strings along all the girls in his harem, shamelessly cheats on whoever he is dating at the time, and displays zero regard for any of the girls' feelings. This culminates in him cruelly dumping Sekai, whom he flat-out ''impregnated'', by ''kissing Kotonoha right in front of her'', an action that causes her to snap and [[DeathByWomanScorned kill him afterwards]].
* HeelFaceDoorSlam:
** [[spoiler:In the anime. After realizing he pushed Kotonoha into the DespairEventHorizon, Makoto attempts to finally do right by her. Unfortunately, this also involved being an utter asshole to Sekai, resulting in her killing him.]]
** [[spoiler:In the manga, he actually convinces Sekai to end the affair before things go out of hand, and she gives him her blessing to commit to Kotonoha. Unfortunately, Kotonoha has already found out about the affair and attempts to murder Sekai in a fit of jealousy, only being stopped by Makoto [[TakingTheBullet getting stabbed in her place.]] Makoto is then hospitalized and wakes up to discover that Sekai completely snapped and murdered Kotonoha in retaliation.]]
%%* HiddenEyes: Displayed by him a few times.
* HeroicBastard: Judging from the fact that he has his mother's surname and that his father is using Tomoe's surname (in order to inherit Tomoe's fortune), one could reasonably presume he and Itaru were born out of wedlock. However, in ''Shiny Days'', he flat-out states several times that his parents are divorced (he even specifies that it was messy). He most likely uses his mother's maiden name simply because he lives with her and hates his father.
%%* IdiotHair: Rather fittingly.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: [[spoiler:In ''Cross Days''' "Only You" ending, he has a reasonably ([[IfICantHaveYou for]] ''[[SpurnedIntoSuicide School]] [[MurderTheHypotenuse Days]]'') healthy relationship with Yuuki. In the ''Cross Days'' manga, however, he comes off as a DepravedBisexual, being willing to have a threesome with Yuuki and Sekai, despite knowing he's a guy. After Yuuki punches him out for [[MoralEventHorizon trying to rape]] Roka.]]
* ILoveYouBecauseICantControlYou: [[spoiler:An interpretation of his feelings for Yuu(ki) in ''Cross Days''. Because Yuuki hates his guts at the beginning, he's immune to wanting to get banged by Makoto. As a result, Makoto has to work to get "Yuu" to pay attention to him. He then falls in love with "her"... and vice versa.]]
* InformedAttractiveness: Despite tons of girls thinking he’s cute and constantly falling for him, his looks appear average at best.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: If he pursues Kotonoha exclusively, he'll start to seriously date her and pay less and less attention to Sekai. It isn't bad intentioned on his part, as he ''does'' interact with Sekai on occasion and still treats her like a friend, but he still breaks her heart regardless. The "innocent" part of the equation can be partially credited to Sekai not confessing her feelings to him, which seems rather dumb considering EveryoneCanSeeIt.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Starts out as one to Kotonoha. It takes Sekai's prodding to get the two of them together.
* InTheBlood: Makoto follows his father's footsteps in sexing up as many people as he can; some Overflow games share their universe with ''School Days'', and Tomaru Sawagoe is in most of them; in fact, he started about 4 different big families by himself, and then made some more with his own offspring... [[spoiler:This becomes even more pronounced when you realize he is related to about anywhere from a fourth to a third of the people he can end up with. Much like his father, he has a thing for sleeping with his own family (though in his case, it is usually unknowingly).]]
* IronicName: "Makoto" can translate to "truth", "sincerity", or "fidelity".
* JerkAss: '''Big time''' in the anime. Also in the ''Cross Days'' manga. In the visual novel, it's dependent on the player's choices.
* JerkassHasAPoint: In one route/ending, [[spoiler:he treats Sekai rather harshly, all but stating that they are through (possibly even as friends). However, he ''does'' rightly call her out on her BystanderSyndrome, allowing her "friends" to bully poor Kotonoha. Even if she was just being complacent, rather than malicious, it's clear to both Makoto and the audience that the cruel treatment has emotionally crippled the poor girl. Given Makoto's [[BerserkButton attitude]] on bullying, it's not hard to see why he was so angry]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Emphasis on ''jerk'' because, while he ''does'' have redeeming qauilities and he ''does'' have [[EvenEvilHasStandards standards]], he's still rather promiscuous and is all to eager to hook up with any girl who gives him an invitation (unless the player steers him in a different direction). Really, his most sympathetic interpretation is a LovableSexManiac.
* KarmaHoudini: Averted most of the time. [[spoiler:But in the ''Cross Days'' manga, he gets away with womanizing and trying to rape Roka. And since [[OneTrueThreesome both Sekai and Kotonoha are fine with not being his only girlfriend]], it doesn't seem like he's going to have problems there anytime soon. On the plus side, [[PairTheSpares Yuuki and Roka]] [[EarnYourHappyEnding get their own happy ending and wash their hands of the whole sordid affair]].]]
* LackOfEmpathy: In the anime, he mistreats others for selfish reasons and is downright callous about it.
* LadykillerInLove: Concerning Yuuki. This does not apply to the female characters, because he always bounces back and forth between them no matter what.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Even though he [[YouAreWhatYouHate hates]] [[ArchnemesisDad the man,]] Makoto has ''a lot'' in common with his father Tomaru. Their [[ReallyGetsAround legendary lust,]] for example, being the most prominent. There's also their tendency of banging people they're related to, though in Makoto's case, he [[ParentalIncest (usually)]] [[SurpriseIncest has no idea that he's related to a number of his love interests.]] Oh, and in some of the more [[DownerEnding infamous routes,]] the utter [[DomesticAbuser lack of respect towards their partners (as shown with them viewing women as merely objects to use for sex)]] is another trait they share.
* LoveRedeems: [[spoiler:In the "Only You" ending of ''Cross Days'', he is willing to get beaten up by Toyama and Matsudaira to make sure that "Yuu" is okay at the end. He even goes as far as telling a newly-exposed Yuuki that he still loves him.]]
** He can also commit to Kotonoha if Yuuki plays his cards right.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: In ''Cross Days'', he's more interested in "Yuu" than Yuuki no matter what route it is. However, he falls for "her" even more in Yuuki's route.
* ManipulativeBastard: He uses every girl (sans Nanami) in the Anime for his own physical pleasure.
* MultiWaySex: Let's make some lists here.
** Original game: with Kotonoha and Sekai in the "Two Lovers" and "To My Child" route; with the Nijou twins in "Goodbye, Sekai".
** Summer/Shiny Days: with the Nijou twins; with Otome and Karen; with Sekai and Youko.
** Cross Days: with Hikari, Nanami, and Roka in "Given Up On Everything".
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In the manga adaptation, [[spoiler:he's moral enough to know he royally screwed up when he cheated on Kotonoha with Sekai]].
* NiceGuy: In contrast to his anime and ''Cross Days'' manga portrayals, Makoto can be played more or less like this in the visual novel, with his more obnoxious or insensitive moments coming from being genuinely inept at socializing and romance and therefore unintentional. This is also a pretty accurate description of him in the original manga.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The nice of the main trio (assuming we're not talking about the [[AdaptationalJerkass anime]] or ''[[AdaptationalVillainy Cross Days]]'' [[AdaptationalVillainy manga]] incarnations): he generally means well, but his indecisiveness and [[CannotSpitItOut hesitancy to speak up]] both end up getting him into trouble. Having people like Sekai and Kotonoha as influences certainly doesn't help matters.
** In ''Summer/Shiny Days'', he's the in-between. While arguably not as vile as some incarnations, he's still a horny teenager who can easily get any girl with an invitation to sleep with him.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: A very tragic case in the manga: [[spoiler:He's sincerely repentant of his actions after cheating on Kotonoha and tries to [[TheAtoner atone for his misdeeds.]] Unfortunately, the consequences come anyways. Kotonoha, having already [[{{Yandere}} gone mad]], attempts to kill Sekai in vengeful bloodlust. Makoto, not wanting Sekai to get hurt, steps in the way and [[TakingTheBullet takes the stab for her.]] To her credit, Kotonoha doesn't try again, but the whole ordeal manages to push ''Sekai'' over the edge, and she later kills Kotonoha while Makoto is hospitalized then gloats about it to his face.]]
* NonActionGuy: Seems to have some sort of severe physical deficiency, as he becomes exhausted simply from sitting near a pool without so much as setting foot in it and actually swimming. Despite this, he has limitless stamina when it comes to sex.
* NonIndicativeName: One meaning of "makoto" is truth/honesty, which is pretty hilarious considering who we're talking about here.
* NotQuiteTheRightThing: Even when he tries to do the right thing, [[NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished it tends to backfire on him]]. Playing the game entirely devoted to one girl will cause the other to become lonely and depressed, and they'll start guilting hardcore on him despite the fact that he's actually tried not to lead them on. In fact, the original visual novel's version of Makoto portrayed his potentially sexing up other girls as being indecisive in that he didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by rejecting them, as opposed to the sex-fiend he's portrayed as in the anime and Summer/Shiny Days or the outright monster he is in the Cross Days manga.
* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler:The official anime ending reveals that Kotonoha decapitated him after stumbling across his corpse in the apartment. She's last seen cradling his head against her chest while setting sail at sea.]]
* OnlySaneMan: [[spoiler:Apparently Makoto is one of the nicest and most normal members of his family. And ''that'' is saying something — although the visual novel version of him ''can'' in fact live up to being deserving of it, depending on how he's played.]]
** Apparently, he's quite the homemaker and housekeeper, as well as a doting brother and an advocate against bullying. In fact (in the visual novel and School Days manga, at least), Makoto's actually a decent guy when his hormones aren't clouding his judgement.
%%* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: What he begins as.
* ParentalIncest: Has sex with his mother and impregnates her in ''Strip Battle Days 2''.
* PervertedSniffing: He can do this in the original game to Kotonoha.
** He can also do this to "Yuu" in ''Cross Days''.
* {{Polyamory}}: It's a VERY difficult ending to get, but ''he can'' get into a genuinely happy three-way relationship with Kotonoha and Sekai.
* ThePornomancer: For an otherwise unspectacular person, girls seem magnetically drawn to him. Pretty much the only girl who never shows interest in him is the already-attached Nanami, but [[spoiler:that gets thrown out the window in ''Cross Days'' when her own boyfriend's revealed to be just as much of a cheating bastard. Damn]].
* RealMenWearPink: Does most of the domestic tasks, as his mother's always working or just can't do it as well as he can.
* ReallyGetsAround: He's a hedonistic pervert who's more than willing to sleep with several women while still being in a relationship, which makes him a super shady {{Slimeball}}. The original visual novel actually [[AvertedTrope averts]] this, for the most part. While he can still be an unfaithful asshole, he'll usually only sleep with Sekai and/or Kotonoha (ThirdOptionLoveInterest notwithstanding). One notable ending does play this trope straight, but it is PlayedForDrama as Makoto is using the sex to cope with losing Sekai and is clearly ''very'' unhappy.
%%* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Yuuki's blue in ''Cross Days''.
* ShotgunWedding: Parodied in ''Summer''/''Shiny Days''. [[spoiler:After his sexual act with Otome and Karen is exposed to the entire Katou family, Makoto is allowed to court them, but not before being beaten up. For an extra bonus, the ending is named "Son-in-law's Ritual".]]
* SecretRelationship: Any ''School Days'' route involving a relationship with Sekai.
** It's implied that he'll have this with [[spoiler:Yuuki]] in ''Cross Days''' "Only You" ending.
* {{Slimeball}}: In the anime, he turns into a self-absorbed, opportunistic, and sex-carzed womanizer who treats women as nothing but sex objects and for the most part has zero empathy, especially when he tells Sekai, who claims to be pregnant, to get an abortion just so he won't have to take the responsibility.
** He's even worse in the ''Cross Days'' manga, where he [[spoiler:tries to rape Roka]].
* SexGod: According to the girl he sleeps with, he's amazing in bed. Sometimes it's the only reason given on why the girls still like him.
* TheSociopath: The anime adaptation interprets him as a high-functioning sociopath. He has a need for stimulation that he satisfies by attracting and sleeping with his classmates, even though he's already in a relationship with Kotonoha. He has enough superficial charm and deceit to present himself as an upstanding student and Nice Guy as well as conceal his sleeping around. He shows no lasting regret for the damage he causes, save Kotonoha, and even then only when she's in his immediate presence.
%%** Ditto with the ''Cross Days''' manga adaptation.
* StalkerWithACrush: Becomes one towards Kotonoha and "Yuu([[spoiler:ki]])". At least at first.
* STDImmunity: Considering how often [[TheCasanova he]] gets [[ReallyGetsAround around]], and his apparent refusal to use protection, it's a wonder he hasn't come down with at least ''one'' of these...
* StrongFamilyResemblance: to his sister and their mother.
* SupremeChef: He's noted to be a very good cook, so much so that he's entrusted with preparing food for the school festival.
* TeenPregnancy: This can happen in game to several of the girls he dates if he isn't careful. According to the [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/school-days/images/b/b1/Official_Family_Tree.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160319142050&format=original official family tree]] ([[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/school-days/images/e/e0/0verflow_Family_Tree_up_to_Shiny_Days.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150603033047&format=original most up to date English version here]]), he actually did end up having a kid with both Setsuna and Sekai. The continuity of this is still somewhat up in the air as no games have yet to portray it or take it into account.
* ThisLoserIsYou: Pretty much what everyone seems to forget in regards to the games: ''Most of Makoto's worst actions are directly initiated by the player.''
* TooDumbToLive: [[SarcasmMode Who would've thought that French-kissing your (supposed) girlfriend in front of your ''other'' girlfriend, who you cheated with and possibly impregnated,]] ''[[SarcasmMode after]]'' [[SarcasmMode sleeping around with upwards to 17 other girls, was a bad idea?]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: Anime adaptation, though the ''Cross Days'' manga manages to outdo the anime — which is no small achievement.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Amusingly averted in one possible ending in Summer Days. It doesn't technically count as an official ending since the player has to massively screw up for this to happen, and it's treated as black comedy and deliberately out-of-character anyway so it's more of a joke ending, but there's a possibility that [[spoiler:Makoto will wake up tied to a chair, courtesy of Setsuna's mother, so that Setsuna can show her love by using a whip on Makoto]].
* TragicHero: The Manga version of him is portrayed as this. [[spoiler:He genuinely cares about both Sekai and Kotonoha, but his FatalFlaw of not being able to choose between them and carrying on a simultaneous relationship would not be resolved until it is too late (Kotonoha unintentionally wounds Makoto while trying to attack Sekai, and while he was in the hospital, Sekai kills Kotonoha in revenge). This, however, is in direct contrast to the completely egotistical [[{{Jerkass}} douchebag]] he is in the Anime and in the ''Cross Days'' manga.]]
** Depending on the player's choices, he can be like this in the game, too — though [[ThisLoserIsYou it requires the player to actively make him that way]]. [[spoiler:Like the manga, but unlike the anime, Makoto is portrayed as a good person whose fatal weakness is that he's indecisive, therefore dragging his feet with girls because he doesn't want to hurt them — only to end up hurting them anyway, even when he [[InnocentlyInsensitive doesn't notice their feelings at all]]. The tragic part can be subverted if the player gets a good ending, or Makoto's fatal weakness can result in either Kotonoha committing suicide-by-fall, Sekai's throat getting slashed with a chainsaw, Makoto himself being stabbed with a knife, he and Sekai going murderous on Kotonoha, or in School Days HQ, one of the trio getting run over by a train.]]
* TrashOfTheTitans: [[AvertedTrope Averted]], something that Sekai [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] when she visits Makoto's apartment for the first time.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: Played straight with ''Cross Days''' "[[spoiler:Love Destroyed]]" ending, in which "Yuu"'s true identity is revealed, [[spoiler:Yuuki]] runs away, and a [[DullEyesofUnhappiness shell-shocked]] Makoto is seen the next day.
** Averted with "[[spoiler:Only You]]." As with "[[spoiler:Love Destroyed]]," "Yuu"'s true identity is revealed, but Makoto stops [[spoiler:Yuuki]] from running away, deciding [[IfItsYouItsOkay If It's You, It's Okay]]. Post-credits, Makoto even [[spoiler:assures Yuuki that he is the ''man'' he loves the most]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: invoked by Otome in Episode 11:
-->'''Otome''': [to Makoto] In junior high, you were more of a caring person.
* VillainProtagonist: Of the anime adaptation.
* WingdingEyes: In the ''~Magical Heart Kokoro-chan~'' {{OVA}}, Makoto and Taisuke sport big shiny gold starbursts in their eyes in their ecstatic response to the arrival of the [[{{Sentai}} Anonymous Defence Service]].
* YouAreWhatYouHate: Makoto [[ArchnemesisDad resents his father,]] yet has ''[[LikeFatherLikeSon a lot]]'' of similarities to him. [[SarcasmMode Self-awareness? What's that?!]]

----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''otonoha '''K'''atsura.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Kotonoha is the victim of bullying from Otome and her GirlPosse from before the series starts, and it only gets worse when Otome learns about her being Makoto's girlfriend.
** In addition, Kotonoha later reveals that she is often the subject of bullying by girls [[GreenEyedMonster who are jealous]] of the fact [[AttractivenessIsolation that she's been busty since junior high.]]
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Makoto assumes she's one at first, since she certainly looks the part. Turns out she's just shy.
%%* ApologisesALot
* AttractivenessIsolation: She's attractive enough that all the guys want her, but none think they have a shot at getting her. This in turn causes the other girls in her class to ostracize her for being a "pheromone girl" that drives men mad with lust.
* AxCrazy: When she goes mad.
* BeAWhoreToGetYourMan: Kotonoha starts off the series as chaste and not good at physical affection. This plays a major factor in Makoto potentially cheating on her, and outright doing so in the various adaptations. Kotonoha's response to this is to force herself to become more sexually forward to keep him.
* TheBeard: It's implied that she'll (unknowingly) be this to [[spoiler: Makoto while he maintains a secret relationship with Yuuki in Cross Days' "Only You" ending.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: The aloof and mysterious Veronica to [[GenkiGirl Sekai's]] Betty.
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
** Do ''not'' bully TheOjou of your school. [[spoiler:She'll go ''[[AxCrazy in]][[{{Yandere}} sane]]''.]]
** Do ''not'' take advantage of her little sister. [[spoiler:She'll [[BigSisterIntinct take]] [[LadyOfWar you]] [[CoolBigSis out]].]]
* BigBreastPride: Her DCupDistress issues are reconstructed somewhat if you pursue her in the game. She gains more confidence in her [[BuxomBeautyStandard buxom body]], and when alone with Makoto, she'll gladly flaunt her assets for him and even uses them to [[MarshmallowHell smother him sometimes.]] But when pursuing Sekai or the other girls, she plays this straight but in a less positive way, where she tries using her body to win him over, and in the Bavarois/Lust Ending, she'll verbally bully Sekai by telling her lies that Makoto likes her body more than Sekai's.
* BigFancyHouse: Not including the Nice Boat. Or her [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail huge tracts of land]].
* BigSisterInstinct: In ''Summer Days'', [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oeed4HqVLtQ her reaction to]] [[spoiler:Makoto banging Kokoro in very shady circumstances]] is grabbing her dad's golf club and hitting him upside the head. [[spoiler:Before things escalate, Kokoro intercedes in Makoto's favor and convinces Kotonoha to forgive him.]]
** Also seen in ''Magical Heart Kokoro-chan'' when she becomes "Magical Word". She saves "Magical Heart" and Makoto from falling debris, then tells Doctor S that she won't forgive her for attacking Magical Heart. She and "Heart" then [[WesternAnimation/CaptainPlanetAndThePlaneteers let their powers combine]], summoning a mecha Mayo-chan and vanquishing the gargantuan Tanaka.
* BlessedWithSuck: Until she met Makoto, her attractive body did her absolutely ''no'' favors. She can potentially [[CursedWithAwesome turn it around]] and use her body [[IHaveBoobsYouMustObey to get what she wants.]]
* BreakTheCutie: The girl was already a victim of school bullying from before the story started. Then things go FromBadToWorse when Makoto starts cheating on her.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her well-endowed chest is why she's considered so attractive and a major DudeMagnet, with many girls envying her figure. However, this [[DCupDistress causes many problems for her]] as men just see her as a LustObject while the jealous girl [[SlutShaming treats her like a slut]].
* ClassRepresentative: In episode 9 of the {{Anime}}, Kotonoha tells Taisuke that she continually mans the reception desk for her class' haunted house because she is the class rep ''and'' a committee member.
* ClingyJealousGirl: A consistent facet of her personality, across all routes and in all adaptations. Exactly ''how'' clingy tends to vary, with the anime taking it (like most other things) to extremes.
** Except [[MarryThemAll the Harem Ending]]. And for the fact that in some routes [[DesperatelyCravesAffection she is so desperate]] for Makoto to love her, she'll either [[ImplausibleDeniability ignore]] or [[EasilyForgiven forgive him cheating on her]]. In one (happy) ending of Cross Days, she announces she accepts Makoto's womanizing, as long as she's the one he loves most. Despite that, the trope is NOT averted, as she at very least weakly issues demands to "Please stop seducing Makoto-kun!", even when she's not [[MurderTheHypotenuse resorting to murder]].
* CreepyMonotone: After going mad, she starts talking in this. Perhaps one of the best classic uses of this trope.
* TheCuckooLanderWasRight: Up until the ending, depending on interpretations of whether her claim about Sekai's pregnancy is true or not.
* DCupDistress: Her [[BuxomBeautyStandard buxom figure]] is better at winning over boys in the School Days universe, but this actually has terrible consequences for Kotonoha, since she hates the attention (it's a primary reason she's so shy in the present day) and her jealous female classmates spread ugly rumors about her deliberately "tempting" boys with her huge breasts, which makes Kotonoha's life much worse.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Hey, you know how the archetypal {{Dandere}} character is extremely shy and yet is able to endear herself to the audience through her kindness? What if the reason she was extremely shy is because she's ''horribly'' low on self-esteem? What if she grows so attached to the first person who ever confessed to her that she goes ''mad'' when she finds out he's cheating on her, and falls into extreme denial over that fact? And in this madness and blatant denial, who could tell what she's capable of?
* DespairEventHorizon: Crossed it in the anime after [[spoiler:being raped by Taisuke and then finding Makoto dead]].
** In the game, there's two instances where she can cross it: [[spoiler:in the first instance, if Kotonoha gets raped, and you then actively pursue Sekai without somehow dealing with Kotonoha's trauma, Kotonoha will first overhear Makoto and Sekai have sex, and then watch them have sex from outside in the snow, causing her to laugh insanely and then slash Sekai's throat with a saw the next time they meet.]] In the second instance, if [[spoiler:the player is playing a path where it's clear Makoto loves Sekai more, and if Kotonoha has resorted to repeatedly having sex with Makoto to keep him interested and Makoto doesn't make his feelings for Sekai clear by refusing Kotonoha's blowjob the last time, Makoto and Sekai will visit Kotonoha to tell her Makoto loves Sekai, causing Kotonoha to commit suicide by falling off the building's balcony.]]
* DudeMagnet: Nearly every guy in the school wants her and nearly every girl hates her for it. Among her admirers are Makoto, Taisuke, and Yuuki.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She can become violent, manipulative, and jealous depending on how Makoto treats her, but she will never kill or physically hurt him (something Sekai will do if pushed too far). [[spoiler: If she attempts to do so (as shown in the extended version of ''Bloody End''), she'll quickly snap out of it and [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone come to realize what a horrible person she's become]].]] It should be noted that [[spoiler:she ''will'' kill Makoto and his friend Kyouichi in ''Summer/Shiny Days'' if she catches them raping her little sister Kokoro, but that isn't her being evil; it's her being [[BigSisterInstinct protective]].]]
* ExpressiveHair: In the "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Ahoge Battle]]" Minigame, her two strands of hair can act as blades that combat against Sekai's IdiotHair.
* ExtremeDoormat: Due to her insecurity, she can't say 'no' or stand up for herself.
%%* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: After going mad.
%%* EvilMakeover: After going mad.
* FreudianExcuse: Constantly bullied by no less than five girls[[note]]In some routes, even more than that[[/note]], with other people constantly abusing her insecurity. She finally meeting people who treat her with genuine kindness, only to have the same people stab her in the back, and [[spoiler:is raped by a person she thought she could sort of trust (her boyfriend's BromanticFoil), and finding out her boyfriend was dancing with her best friend while she was being raped]]. In a few possibilities, being cruelly dumped after the former mentioned event. Is it any wonder she snaps the way she does on the bad endings?
** Due to the complicated game flowchart, though, it's entirely possible to have her snap and go murderous even without [[spoiler:the rape]], the only 'cheating' happening after you'd told her you'd broken up with her. The bullies are a constant, though.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** In the visual novel, when Makoto and Kotonoha watch a horror movie together, Kotonoha isn't scared of it at all, and confesses to him that she enjoys "horror and splatter movies". [[SarcasmMode Who]] [[AxCrazy would]] [[{{Yandere}} have]] [[MurderTheHypotenuse thought?]]
** Episode 10 of the anime is the [[spoiler:start of her descent into being a {{Yandere}} after Makoto admitted breaking up with her. The only hint mid-episode has Kotonoha staring at the kitchen knives in their home, and later at the end when a WhamShot shows her with DullEyesOfUnhappiness]].
* GangOfBullies: Kotonoha is harassed by no less than five girls!
* GirlyGirlAndTomboy: Girly Girl to Sekai's Tomboy.
* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: [[spoiler:Some of the endings and in the anime ending.]]
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: [[spoiler:After being raped by Makoto's best friend Taisuke, she finds out Makoto dumped her immediately afterward. She then falls into a downward spiral of ImplausibleDeniability (below) on behalf of Makoto's actions and the nature of their current relationship -- or lack thereof.]]
* HeelRealization: Trying to harm Makoto after [[SanitySlippage going insane]] will cause her to realize how low she's sunk.
* HeroicBSOD: She suffers ''several'' of these if the game doesn't lean towards her.
* HiddenDepths: Seems like a run-of-the-mill rich, sheltered, insecure shy girl at first blush, but her sweet facade hides some ''deep'' personality flaws. More especially noticeable in the original game, in which she can display a ''nasty'' passive-aggressive side that wasn't explored in the anime.
* HiddenEyes: Displayed often.
* HighPressureBlood: All that's left after she throws herself off a balcony is a sea of crimson.
* ImplausibleDeniability: In this case it's toward the observer, denying the perpetrator's actions. [[spoiler:Kotonoha frequently denies clearly building evidence that Makoto is cheating on her. Even after he breaks up with her face-to-face, Kotonoha starts having an internal breakdown and continues to unsuccessfully attempt to contact him.]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: In one ending of ''Shiny Days'', [[spoiler:Kotonoha is willing to part with Makoto as she knew that his heart will always have Setsuna.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
** At one point she asks Sekai for relationship advice, assuming she had "experience" (read: not a virgin). Sekai asks how experienced she looks like, and Kotonoha says "[[ReallyGetsAround extremely]]". They are both virgins at this point, but at least it's clear that Kotonoha does not think of or tries to insult Sekai - she merely considers her a more worldly and popular person to go for advice.
** Kotonoha also obliviously lets it slide that her mother told her to not worry about spending on her date the amount of money Sekai earlier said is more than her mother earns in a month.
** Most notably, there is when Kotonoha is talking to a depressed Sekai about her relationship with Makoto - namely about their sex life - while completely unaware that Sekai's depression stems from an unrequited love for Makoto, instead assuming she's down because her family isn't together for Christmas and thus unwittingly dumping salt on the wound.
** For a much darker example, during a conversation with Sekai in the game, she casually threatens to murder whoever Makoto broke up with her for, unaware that it's actually ''Sekai'' Makoto is dating now.
* IronicName: Her name's meaning contradicts her [[ShrinkingViolet personality]].
* LethalChef: Though she apparently improves. Unless you count the [[OriginalVideoAnimation OVA]].
* LonelyRichKid: Before meeting Makoto and Sekai, she doesn't seem to have any friends whatsoever, and while she does have genuinely caring parents, they often go on long business trips away from home.
%%* LonersAreFreaks
* LoveMakesYouCrazy[=/=]LoveMakesYouEvil
* MacheteMayhem: [[spoiler:Her [[GirlWithPsychoWeapon saw]].]]
* ManipulativeBitch: [[spoiler:In the visual novel, she can find out that Makoto and Sekai have been cheating. She responds by playing on Makoto's guilt to get him to feel her up, then takes photos and uses these to force Sekai to break things off. Depending on the path the player has been taking, this leads either to an unsatisfying ending where Makoto is together with Kotonoha but clearly unhappy, or to Makoto finally growing a spine and getting one of Sekai's better endings]].
* MeaningfulName: ''Kotonoha'' is an old reading of the word ''Kotoba'' (which, by the way, means "word"). Kokoro describes her as "old-fashioned". When written in the right characters, ''kotoba'' becomes a part of the ''hanakotoba'' term, referring to the Japanese language of flowers.
* MsFanservice: She’s certainly an attractive girl. [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed,]] as her [[BuxomBeautyStandard buxom figure]] has ''not'' made her happy. Guys only see her as walking fanservice, and girls either envy her to such a petty extent or make up [[SlutShaming rumors]] about her [[ReallyGetsAround supposed promiscuity.]]
* MurderTheHypotenuse: [[spoiler:Her saw-related bad ending and the anime GrandFinale, although by the time of said finale Sekai wasn't really even a hypotenuse anymore.]] There's also a scene of the game where she asks Sekai about who Makoto is dating, and then follows that up with a threat to murder whoever it is. She ends up deciding that it's probably [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Otome]] and that [[PragmaticVillainy she doubts she could kill someone as athletic as Otome.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In the manga, Makoto actually does choose Kotonoha over Sekai in the end, with the latter [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy actually accepting his decision.]] [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Kotonoha decided to try and kill Sekai anyway, stabbing Makoto by accident. And then, while Makoto is in the hospital recovering, Sekai turns the tables on Kotonoha and ''succeeds'' in killing her.]]
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The mean of the main trio: she may seem sugary-sweet on the outside, but her sanity is fragile ([[spoiler:as Sekai learns the hard way]]). She's also the most [[ManipulativeBitch manipulative]], especially in regards to Makoto. She'll do just about anything to have him to herself. ''[[{{Yandere}} anything...]]''
** Curiously, she's the nice one in ''Summer/Shiny Days''. Her {{Yandere}} qualities are nowhere to be found (the few times she ''does'' resort to violence stem from a protective BigSisterInstinct rather than any deep seated insanity), and she'll even [[spoiler:[[GracefulLoser give up dating Makoto]] when she realizes [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy that he'll be happier with Setsuna. ]] ]]
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: [[spoiler:In the path where she tells Makoto that Taisuke impregnated Sekai… She will be killed by Sekai herself via being tossed in the path of a train.]]
* NotGoodWithRejection: Part of the problem is Makoto's own tendency to waffle, of course, but even in routes where he flat-out tells Kotonoha he's breaking up with her, she absolutely refuses to stop considering him to be her boyfriend and that other girls are trying to steal him away.
* {{Ojou}}: Very pretty, kinda naive, lives in a BigFancyHouse, is thought of as "unreachable" by boys, envied badly by girls.
* PeerlessLoveInterest: At the very beginning of the story, Makoto is content simply to love Kotonoha from afar. It takes Sekai's constant prodding to get the two of them together… and then the ''real'' plot starts.
* {{Polyamory}}: Yes, ''there does'' exist, an ending where both she and Sekai are in a relationship with Makoto. And to top it off, she and Sekai are ''also'' dating each other. No, there's no [[MemeticMutation nice boat]] here.
* PragmaticVillainy: When considering the possibility that [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Otome is the person Makoto loves]] [[MurderTheHypotenuse and what to do about that]], she concludes that she probably can't kill someone as athletic as Otome, who plays on the basketball team.
* RapeAsDrama:
** [[spoiler:Kotonoha's mental and emotional breakdown hits her fully after she's raped by her StalkerWithACrush, Makoto's best friend Taisuke.]]
** [[spoiler:One of the ways that Kotonoha tries to keep Makoto interested in her after he chooses Sekai is to use her body to keep him interested. Depending on how desperate she is, she can force herself on him on numerous occasions. This, unsurprisingly, nearly torpedoes Makoto's relationship with Sekai. Eventually, Makoto [[TookALevelInBadass grows a spine]] and even teams up with ''[[EnemyMine Otome]]'' to give Kotonoha a well-deserved TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Sekai's red.
** In Summer Days and Shiny Days, she is the red to Setsuna's blue.
* SchoolBullyingIsHarmless: [[AvertedTrope Are you stupid?!]] Regardless of how Makoto treats her, it's at least implied that Kotonoha has some severe emotional and mental issues that were caused, in no small part, do to her being bullied. She gets harassed by no less than 5 girls during a single playthrough (usually for [[DCupDistress her big chest size]]). It's probably why she's so [[ClingyJealousGirl attached to Makoto in the first place.]]
* SexSlave: Sort of; if she ends up in a relationship with Taisuke and Makoto completely abandons her, she completely [[EmptyShell resigns on life]] and becomes just a living sex-toy for Taisuke's lust. And Taisuke, inflamed by her gorgeous body, has sex with her on every occasion.
* ShrinkingViolet: She is a shy and reserved girl with little to no social life due to the bullying and sexual harassment she’s been through.
* SlutShaming: Her breast size being the reason for the bullying and perversity she endures.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: Not that Kotonoha ever actually says this line, but it describes her life pretty well. She's considered one of the most beautiful girls in school due to her huge breasts, and it ends up causing her to get a lot of attention she doesn't want, like lust from her male classmates and scornful jealousy among her female peers.
* SpurnedIntoSuicide: [[spoiler:In one of the game endings, when Makoto leaves her in favor of Sekai, she kills herself by falling backwards off a balcony and splattering all over the sidewalk in front of them.]]
* StalkerWithACrush: To some degree. [[spoiler:Especially in the outcome where she steals Makoto's house key and breaks into his house every night to 'be with' him, and torture herself into insanity.]]
** She is also unfortunately subject to these herself. One of the boys carrying a torch for her is Makoto's best friend Taisuke. [[spoiler: This has the potential to end very, very badly for Kotonoha in the game [[RapeAsDrama depending on]] [[SanitySlippage what route]] [[SexSlave you take]]. In the anime, he confesses to her at the school festival and then rapes her, while she's in a state of shock after being dumped by Makoto.]]
* StockShoujoBullyingTactics: She's mostly subjected to two: "being cornered and verbally lashed at" and "being completely ignored". The game adds [[spoiler:"having a lunch prepared by Makoto knocked down and stepped on"]], [[spoiler:"being the target of slutshamey rumors"]], and [[spoiler:"being cornered, threatened ''and'' beaten up"]]. [[spoiler:And having [[BullyHunter Makoto]] find out and pull a BigDamnHeroes for her will mark the difference between getting one of the cutest Kotonoha ends... and having Sekai pay for this ''with her life'' in a bad one.]]
* SurrogateSoliloquy: [[spoiler:In this case, just [[TalkingToTheDead Talking To The Head]]. While there is no exposition on Kotonoha's part, there is no mistaking to the viewer that she has perhaps irrevocably gone off the deep end, mental health-wise, on her [[MemeticMutation Nice Boat]]]].
* TalkingToTheDead: [[spoiler:Kotonoha talks to Makoto's head as if [[SurrogateSoliloquy Makoto is still alive.]]]]
* TearsOfRemorse: In the LxH extension of "Bloody Conclusion". [[spoiler:She has just murdered Sekai in front of Makoto in cold blood and offers herself to him, but Makoto is terrified and rejects her affections. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone This is enough to make Kotonoha realize that she has just done something terrible]], and she breaks down in tears.]]
* TeenPregnancy: In the "Two Lovers" and "To My Child" endings.
* ThanatosGambit: [[spoiler:Forever/Eternally. She messily kills herself in front of Makoto and Sekai to ensure they'll never be happy together.]]
* ThereAreNoTherapists: [[spoiler:Nobody but Kotonoha's little sister Kokoro and Sekai notice her fall into insanity.]]
* TotallyTrustingLoveInterest: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. [[YamatoNadeshiko Kotonoha]] ''never'' suspects [[TheCasanova Makoto]] of cheating with her, despite blatantly obvious clues (rarely sees her, avoids responding to her calls/mail, [[LoveMakesYouDumb people telling her he's cheating]], etc.). This obviously all leads to insanity when she was able to see him cheating with her own eyes [[spoiler:and the [[DownerEnding leads to the]] [[MemeticMutation infamous]] [[CradlingYourKill Nice Boat]] ending]].
* TownGirls: Femme to Sekai's Butch and Setsuna's Neither.
* UngratefulBitch: [[spoiler:In a couple of Cross Days' bad endings, her way of thanking Yuuki for trying to hook her up with Makoto again and stop his cheating ways is… to murder either Yuuki himself or Yuuki's sister. To put this more in context, she does this after she overhears Makoto and "Yu" getting it on.]]
%%* WhosLaughingNow:
* YamatoNadeshiko: Kotonoha is soft-spoken, sweet, and beautiful. [[spoiler:When she's still sane, that is. When she's not, the iron comes out in a lethal fashion.]]
* {{Yandere}}:
** [[spoiler:Although Sekai ''did'' stab Makoto to death, it's Kotonoha that sets a new standard for this one. One of the infamous "bad endings" in the original visual novel is one where she kills Sekai with a handsaw in broad daylight in front of a crowd of witnesses]].
** [[spoiler:In the anime, the saw comes out again, though this time it's in a considerably more private place and Makoto is too busy being dead to freak out.]]
** [[spoiler:In ''Cross Days'' and its manga adaptation, she is so paranoid and insecure about her relationship with Makoto that she views any female getting too close to him as a threat, even if said person is trying to help her out.]]

* ACupAngst: Briefly in Episode 5 of the anime and Visual Novel. While Sekai isn't flat-chested by any definition, seeing [[BuxomBeautyStandard Kotonoha]] in a bathing suit makes her feel rather insecure about her considerably smaller size.
** And while they were trying out swimsuits before that, Nanami implies that Sekai makes the other girls in class feel this way.
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the anime, she's more selfish and less concerned with others' well-being.
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''ekai '''S'''aionji
* AllTakeAndNoGive: While it isn't bad-intentioned on her part, her relationship with Setsuna is like this, with Sekai being the taker and Setsuna being the giver. It comes from both Setsuna's willingness to do anything to ensure Sekai's happiness and Sekai's own [[InnocentlyInsensitive unwitting disregard]] for Setsuna's feelings.
* BettyAndVeronica: The grounded and adventurous Betty to Kotonoha's enigmatic Veronica.
* TheBabyTrap: Some people think that Sekai wanted to do this to Makoto in the anime. The visual novel route ending in "Pushed Too Far" and one of two routes ending in "To My Child" are even worse than the anime in regards to this, as far as the ethics of Sekai's behavior are concerned. [[spoiler:Unlike in the anime, there is no doubt she is pregnant, but it's very unlikely Makoto is the father -- she got pregnant almost a month after they broke up. So her decisions in murdering either Makoto or Kotonoha seem particularly harsh in such a scenario.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Shows herself over and over again to be an extremely sympathetic and self-sacrificing person, although it's not entirely clear [[spoiler:how much of that was just a ploy to win Makoto. If it was all an act, it was an amazingly stupid one.]]
** In the game, [[spoiler:it seems to be genuine, not an act. There are some paths where Sekai witnesses Kotonoha being harassed, causing Sekai to attempt to break up with Makoto to make Kotonoha feel better. Since this happens on paths where Makoto has strong feelings for Sekai, it backfires and Makoto thinks Sekai cares about Kotonoha's feelings more than his. But give Sekai credit for trying.]]
* BigNo: In the "To My Child" ending where she [[spoiler:stabs Makoto for leaving her for Kotonoha while she's pregnant with his (or Taisuke's) baby. After Makoto admits that he was worried for her since she disappeared and thanks her for not planning to give up their child, all while slowly bleeding to death, Sekai runs off screaming this line before he can fully admit how he's always loved her.]]
** Episode 12 of the anime when Makoto and Kotonoha make out in front of her.
** A more heroic one is found in "I Love You", in which she gives a BigNo upon receiving a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech from Kotonoha.
** A more tragic one in "Forever", when she and Makoto witness [[spoiler:Kotonoha's suicide]].
** A funnier one in Shiny Days, [[spoiler:as she attempts one last futile act of defiance before she unwillingly joins Setsuna, Youko, and Mai in their pregnancy group and is presumably impregnated by Makoto too.]]
* BreakTheCutie: If you root for her.
* CannotSpitItOut: Having [[JustFriends friendzoned]] herself, she could have saved herself and everyone else a ''lot'' of grief if she had just been upfront about her feelings for Makoto with everyone right from the start; ''especially'' in the anime.
* TheChewToy: She tends to be the one getting the short end of the stick in bad endings.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Setsuna and Niki.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She's aware of just how jealous she is of Makoto and Kotonoha, and (at least in the game) tries to take steps to counteract it. Unfortunately, she also seems to have rather poor impulse control.
* ConvenientMiscarriage: [[spoiler:In the anime ending, if you're to believe her. Kotonoha says she isn't even pregnant, after ''cutting her open to check'', but by that point they've ''both'' gone off the deep end, so it's hard to tell who's lying... or if someone was lying at ''all''.]]
** [[spoiler:Sekai was only pregnant for perhaps two months at that point. Even if you cut her open, it's unlikely that you'll find any trace of the embryo that would be visible to the naked eye, especially if you do it with a crude butcher's knife.]]
** It's [[TakeAThirdOption also]] [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation speculated]] that [[spoiler:Sekai wasn't pregnant, and the "symptoms" were more of stress over the ''really'' crappy situation she was in, but truly believed that she was carrying Makoto's baby. [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_pregnancy Psychological pregnancy]] shouldn't be discarded so easily.]]
* DeathByWomanScorned: [[spoiler:In the anime and a few of the game endings, where she's killed by Kotonoha.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the MatchmakerCrush, and the "Betty" half of the BettyAndVeronica trope. Turns out that giving the person you like away to another girl can ''really'' put a damper on your emotional state. And outright telling him your feelings may end up making things so much [[FromBadToWorse worse]] [[ConflictBall than they really have to be]].
* DemotedToExtra: At the beginning of ''Summer''/''Shiny Days'', she falls ill and basically loses almost any significance in the story. And although a romance with her is still possible, in her original role as one of the most significant of Makoto's love interests, she is replaced by her mother.
* DespairEventHorizon:
** [[spoiler:Crosses this in the anime after Makoto dumps her in pretty much the most dickish way imaginable.]]
** [[spoiler:She can cross it in the game if you're trying to continue a threesome with Kotonoha and Sekai on the rooftop, you have to choose between them, and you choose Kotonoha. This leads to a scene where Sekai overhears Makoto and Kotonoha having sex, and Kotonoha, in a moment of insecurity, asks Makoto to pretend that he hates Sekai; Makoto plays along, reassuring Kotonoha that he loves her, and Sekai was mostly good to have sex with. Sekai throws up while crying after hearing this, and six months later, she stabs Makoto with a knife on the beach.]]
** [[spoiler:In the route ending in "Pushed Too Far" after Makoto dumps her over the phone and Sekai concludes that Kotonoha manipulated him]]
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: [[http://i.imgur.com/8qZG7LR.jpg Gets these]] in the [[spoiler:above mentioned DespairEventHorizon.]]
* DullSurprise: Sekai suffers from this when she overhears Makoto (whom she invited hopeful to have sex with for the first time) [[spoiler:doing it with Youko]], while Sekai was taking a shower to prepare. [[spoiler:Not even after bursting through the doors to interrupt them does she have anything but her standard expression.]] Even Makoto who's usually guilty of this, reacts with a more appropriate (shocked) expression after being told that [[spoiler:Youko isn't Sekai's older sister, but her '''mother''']].
* {{Expy}}: Sekai looks like a hybrid mix between Kagome from {{Manga/Inuyasha}}, Tomo from Manga/AzumangaDaioh, and Nagisa Furukawa from {{VisualNovel/CLANNAD}}.
* FanServiceWithASmile: The [[FormFittingWardrobe waitress]] [[HighlyConspicuousUniform uniform]] for her afterschool job, which can easily be mistaken as {{Cosplay}}. Not only does it [[ImpossiblyLowNeckline leave little to the imagination]], it comes complete with detached sleeves and some frills.
* FirstKiss: Sekai suddenly takes this from Makoto as her reward for setting him up with Kotonoha. [[FromBadToWorse It all goes to hell not long after this]].
* FreudianExcuse: She resents her father because she believes that he just used her mother and then threw her away after she got pregnant, leading her to fear that the same thing will eventually happen to her. That would explain a ''lot''. This gets brought up in ''Shiny Days'' where it's implied that she is jealous of Setsuna who gets to be with both her own father Shun [[spoiler:(who is ''her'' father too)]] and the boy she likes.
* TheGadfly: Mostly in the first episode; she endlessly teases and annoys Makoto about his budding relationship with Kotonoha. It's also ([[UnreliableNarrator allegedly]]) the reason why she [[FirstKiss stole a kiss from him]] as payment for setting the two of them up.
* GenerationXerox: Her mother basically tries to turn her into a generational clone of herself, driving her into the same teen pregnancy situation she experienced herself or making sure that in many routes Makoto impregnates both of them at same time.
* GenkiGirl: Mostly.
* GirlNextDoor: In contrast to Kotonoha, Sekai is seemingly a typical cheery, outgoing Japanese schoolgirl.
* GoodGirlGoneBad: The most sympathetic interpretation of her character in the anime.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:In the ''Christmas Eve'' ending, Sekai tearfully accepts that she has no chance to be with Makoto because he had basically dedicated himself to Kotonoha.]]
* GroinAttack: One episode had Sekai kneeing Makoto for groping her butt.
* HeroicBastard: [[spoiler:As her father, Shun Hazama, couldn't choose the one he truly loved most, Youko, Mai, Wakaba, and Natsuhi all left him. (They're apparently still on good terms, though.)]]
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:A ''big'' one in the anime.]]
** Gets another big one in ''Shiny Days'' [[spoiler:when Setsuna reveals that Makoto is her boyfriend.]]
* HiddenEyes: Displayed often.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: [[spoiler:In one of the LxH extension endings, Sekai pushes Kotonoha onto a train line right after she and Makoto officially hook up, but ''Sekai'' is the one who ends up being hit by the train instead]].
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: Her reaction in routes where Makoto returns her feelings for him.
%%* IdiotHair: Rather fittingly.
* IfICantHaveYou: [[spoiler:The anime ending and "To My Child" has Sekai kill Makoto for choosing Kotonoha over her. The anime one-ups this trope with her accusing Makoto of only thinking of Kotonoha's happiness.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: She doesn't seem to realize just how [[AllTakeAndNoGive one-sided]] her friendship with Setsuna actually is, though it's implied to be in large part because of how much of an ExtremeDoormat Setsuna is towards her specifically.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Much like Makoto for Kotonoha, Sekai turns out to have been admiring Makoto from afar while holding herself back because she feels like taking him for herself is selfish (at least in the visual novel).
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Sekai's initial intentions for Makoto while befriending -- [[MatchmakerCrush and setting him up with]] -- Kotonoha. Then Sekai suddenly takes his FirstKiss as a reward. [[spoiler:Later, when Makoto confesses to Sekai, she tearfully admits she had chosen to support him when Makoto told her he liked Kotonoha. Sekai puts all the blame on him before they kiss... and so forth.]] See MatchmakerCrush below.
** The visual novel plays with this trope a bit more than the anime does, in that in some routes she realizes that Makoto is also falling for her, which leads her to try to distance herself from him because she doesn't want to become the SpannerInTheWorks -- which, of course, can lead to Makoto tracking her down himself and confessing his own fully-realized feelings.
* {{Jerkass}}: Many fans seem to see Sekai as this, [[spoiler:given how she claims to want Makoto - and later Kotonoha once she befriends her - to be happy, but is perfectly willing to keep meddling in their relationship by offering herself to Makoto to practice sex on]]. In the original game [[spoiler:it's a bit subverted, as it was implied to be from sharing Makoto's fatal flaw of indecisiveness and things going farther than she intended]]. In the anime, manga and Cross Days [[spoiler:it's instead implied that she's knowingly messing with Makoto's feelings or even that she got him and Kotonoha together just to deliberately tank things and catch him on the rebound, being far less considerate of her friend's feelings than in other interpretations]].
** Hell, even her most sympathetic interpretation in the original School Days has shades of this. [[spoiler:When Makoto first starts dating Kotonoha, the way the rest of the girls believe Kotonoha stole Makoto from Sekai implies that the latter never once told her friends what the actual reason she was spending time with him was[[note]]namely that she was giving him coaching on how to ask Kotonoha out, as well as setting him and Kotonoha up[[/note]] - resulting in Makoto and Kotonoha getting a lot of flak from people that Sekai could have easily prevented]]. This isn't even counting her friendship with Setsuna, in which, while portrayed as her being InnocentlyInsensitive, still shows her often not bothering to consider Setsuna's feelings - [[spoiler:and it's made even worse once it's revealed that the reason Setsuna never pursued Makoto herself was because she'd asked Sekai to help her get close to him much like Makoto asked Sekai to help with Kotonoha. However, Setsuna noticed Sekai falling for him and bowed out, which Sekai seemed to just accept with no further inquiry - basically letting Setsuna sacrifice her own shot at Makoto for the sake of a shot Sekai herself was ultimately was too scared to take until potentially too late for either of them!]]. In fact, this same thing comes back to bite her in one route [[spoiler:when Makoto learns Kotonoha was being bullied by Otome and the Trio; even when Nanami takes responsibility for it and reveals Sekai wasn't in on the plan, Makoto still holds Sekai accountable for the fact that, as Kotonoha's friend, she should have known about the harassment and either done something about it or told him - or worse, that she knew about the bullying but said nothing because of how it worked in her favor. Something that both sinks her chances with him ''and'' seemingly ends friendship]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She tends to be rather selfish and [[EntitledToHaveYou entitled]] in most of her appearances, and is not above being [[ManipulativeBitch manipulative]] just to have Makoto all to herself. That being said, in certain paths of the visual novel, she at least ''tries'' to put Makoto and Kotonoha's feelings above her own. How well she succeeds without drifting back into JerkAss (or worse, {{Yandere}}) territory depends on how well Makoto treats her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: The above-mentioned ''Cross Days'' interpretation comes across as this, as well as in the manga version.
* KissingCousins: This also happens if she ends up [[spoiler:going out with Taisuke, since his biological father is also Sekai's maternal uncle.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: In ''Cross Days'', it's to be noted that save for one or two endings, she never ends up with Makoto after all she does to keep him in ''School Days''. Even the scene where it ''looks like'' Makoto and Sekai are going to have sex, complete with Sekai getting naked, ends abruptly as Makoto leaves before they can actually do the deed. [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech Yuuki calls her out on everything as well, which helps.]]
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Bickers with Makoto, as lampshaded in the anime.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: In the anime, she responds to Makoto's persistent womanizing by [[spoiler:violently murdering him with a kitchen knife]].
** Also in one ending of the visual novel, in which she responds to Makoto's choosing Kotonoha over her by [[spoiler:violently murdering him with a kitchen knife… on a beach]]. There's another ending where she instead responds by [[spoiler:pushing Kotonoha in front of an oncoming train]].
* LovingAShadow: In the anime, she loved Makoto up until the very end.
* ManipulativeBitch: In the manga.
* MatchmakerCrush: Sekai helps Makoto and Kotonoha hook up… [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy and puts a lot more effort into it than you would expect]]. And then she gives herself a reward for her efforts by [[spoiler:surprise-kissing Makoto]]. '''''This does not end well.''''' See IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy above.
** It turns out that Sekai originally played this role for [[spoiler:Setsuna, but ended up developing her own feelings for Makoto and turned to Setsuna for help.]]
* MeaningfulName[=/=]PunnyName: As everybody knew, Sekai means "the world". She is the one who created a "world" between Kotonoha and Makoto. And as someone once noted, "the world is unstable".
* MurderTheHypotenuse: [[spoiler:Reversed in the manga (where after Kotonoha fails to kill Sekai, ''Sekai'' is the one who kills her and even gloats about it in front of a despaired and hospitalized Makoto) and also in some new bad endings from the [=PS2=] version, which involve trains. One of these endings shows Sekai pushing Kotonoha on the line, but falling in as well and then getting hit by the train when Makoto is bailing Kotonoha out. The second features ''Makoto'' getting killed in front of the girls after he saves Sekai from her fall, the third kills off ''both'' girls in front of Makoto, and the fifth one involves Sekai ''succeeding'' at killing Kotonoha by throwing her in the path of the train as it passes, despite Makoto attempting to save her. NICE TRAIN, INDEED.]]
** [[spoiler:That last one is the one later used by the ''School Days HQ'' re-release; Sekai pushes Kotonoha into the path of a train and breaks into psychotic laughter as Makoto looks on in horror.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:She seems quite horrified in "To My Child" after stabbing Makoto. The feeling is played up in the anime ending where she stops stabbing and sees his vacant eyes staring up at her as if she realized that she killed the boy she loved.]]
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The in-between of the main trio: She's (probably) not as unstable as [[LoveMakesYouCrazy Kotonoha]], and she'll even bow out when she sees that Makoto is falling for Kotonoha. However, she does have a selfish, manipulative streak. In some routes, she has no problem lying and withholding information to keep her relationship with Makoto a secret (unlike Makoto, who just [[CannotSpitItOut can't bring himself to say anything]]). Also, she's ''usually'' not as murderous as Kotonoha, but she [[NotGoodWithRejection doesn't take cheating all that well.]] (Understandably so.)
** In ''Shiny Days'', she's the mean one. She shows little regard for Setsuna's feelings, even [[PlayingSick pretending to be sick]] so she can lounge while Setsuna repeatedly takes her shift. This backfires spectacularly as she is DemotedToExtra as a result, with Setsuna, Kotonoha, and countless secondary and tertiary characters having a higher shot at ending up with Makoto than her.
* NotGoodWithRejection: [[spoiler:For the anime ending and two of the visual novel's Bad Ends, she ends up killing [[IfICantHaveYou Makoto]]/[[MurderTheHypotenuse Kotonoha]].]]
* {{Polyamory}}: Can end up in a three-way relationship with Makoto and Kotonoha, with her even ''also'' dating Kotonoha. It's just one of the harder endings to get.
* ProperlyParanoid: In ''Cross Days'', she's afraid that if Makoto will walk around the festival with other people (such as for Roka's jealousy plot), he'll end up cheating on her. Makoto will prove her right more often than not.
* RapeAsDrama: [[spoiler:If she starts dating Taisuke in the visual novel, he ends up raping her (or pressuring her into having sex even if she's initially reluctant, if you want to put things mildly). A lot. On one path, in a [[SarcasmMode shining moment of character]] for Makoto, he catches Sekai visibly upset running out of a room where Taisuke had just raped her, and later [[WhatTheHellHero masturbates to the thought of how cute she looked.]] To be fair, though, Taisuke doesn't explain it to Makoto as a rape (or even considers it to be rape himself); he explains it as Sekai having told him to put a condom on, but him having run out and ejaculating inside Sekai anyway. This may have caused Makoto to think the incident was less serious than it really was.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Kotonoha's blue.
* RomanticFalseLead: More-or-less serves this role in Cross Days. While she does have endings of her own, most paths have the goal involving her and Makoto breaking up, in order to make room for Kotonoha. This also serves as a good example of when the subject is made too sympathetic, since Makoto just ends up looking like even more of a jerk.
* {{Shorttank}}
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:In the ending "[[{{Irony}} Pushed]] Too Far", she looks positively demented as she watches Kotonoha get hit by a train and laughs maniacally as the traumatized Makoto holds his girlfriend's severed arm.]]
* TeenPregnancy: In the "Pushed Too Far", "To My Child", and "Two Lovers" endings.
** Also implied in ''Shiny Days''' "Paris for Four" ending.
** According to the official relationship chart, it does canonically happen, but the exact timing of the pregnancy and continuity is up in the air, as no game has yet to portray it outside of optional routes.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Kotonoha's and Setsuna's Girly Girls
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Tomboyish in behavior, but she's very concerned about other affairs.
* TownGirls: Butch to Kotonoha's Femme and Setsuna's Neither.
* TookALevelInJerkass:
** The manga adaptation has her noticeably less concerned about Kotonoha's feelings, and far more aggressive in her pursuit of Makoto, while her personal insecurities are given much less attention.
** She has a more selfish, [[EntitledToHaveYou entitled]] attitude in ''[[VisualNovel/ShinyDays Summer/Shiny Days]]'', even going so far as lie just to get Makoto and Setsuna to break so she can have him all to herself.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sekai ''seems'' at first to be a Type B…
* UnexpectedVirgin: Kotonoha believed her to be sexually experienced before she had sex with Makoto.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Makoto was actually rather normal and faithful to Kotonoha until Sekai seduced him.
* WomanScorned: Particularly in the anime.
* {{Yandere}}: Holy crap, Sekai is creepy in the manga and some of the game endings…

----
* ACupAngst: Setsuna is pretty short and underdeveloped for her age and is rather self-conscious about it. In ''Summer Days''/''Shiny Days'', Setsuna works at Radish Restaurant in place of Sekai and has to wear a {{Stripperiffic}} uniform while working alongside the much [[BuxomBeautyStandard bustier]] Oruha and Noan. Also, the game introduces Kazuha, Futaba, and Karen, who are not only younger than her but also much more developed.
* AffectionateNickname: In ''Summer Days''/''Shiny Days'', after she and Makoto [[spoiler:have sex for the first time and]] begin dating, she asks Makoto if she can address him as "Mako-chan", and in return, allows Makoto to call her, "Se-chan". Makoto eventually agrees, but [[EmbarrassingNickname only when they're alone.]]
* AllTakeAndNoGive: Her relationship with Sekai. Partly because Sekai disregards Setsuna's feelings, partly because Setsuna is so devoted to Sekai that she is willing to completely steamroll over other people in order to ensure that Sekai is happy.
* AscendedExtra: In ''Summer Days'' and ''Shiny Days'' she is promoted to be the third main heroine.
* BabiesEverAfter: In certain game paths via a postcard.
** The game paths are "Bavarois" (Sekai ending) and "Carnal Desires" (Kotonoha ending). The postcard arrives in a post-credits scene called [[spoiler:I'm the Wife]] if you got either of those endings in a path where [[spoiler:Makoto and Setsuna have intercourse during the festival at the end of Episode 4.]]
** [[spoiler:In one ending of ''Shiny Days'', Makoto impregnates her, Mai, and Youko, and the four of them then try to convince Sekai to become pregnant too...]]
* BerserkButton: People who make fun of [[TheNapoleon her rather young looks]] or otherwise belittle her tend to be the recipient of a swift kick in the face, Taisuke being the usual culprit. And that's not even talking about what happens to people who try to hurt Sekai in any way…
* CatSmile: Sports one during her drunk babbling during the school festival.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Sekai and Niki. [[spoiler:She's also Sekai's half-sister.]]
* ClassRepresentative: For her, Makoto, and Sekai's classroom.
* DefrostingIceQueen: In her path in the game.
* DisproportionateRetribution: When [[spoiler:Nanami]] skips her shift during the school festival to go on a date with her boyfriend, she accidentally leaves her phone behind. Setsuna gets mad when she's unable to contact her, so she [[spoiler:copies Nanami's entire address book from her phone]].
* EmotionlessGirl: Seems to be, although she's really just rather quiet about her emotions.
* ExtremeDoormat: Played straight in ''School Days'', where she'll do anything to make Sekai happy. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] in ''Summer/Shiny Days'' as Sekai has to use Makoto as a bargaining chip just to get Setsuna to take her place at work.
* GuileHero: She's quite adept at manipulating people, and can potentially be very ruthless in her dealings with them, but usually works in such a manner that it's actually to their own benefit.
* HeroicBastard: Same deal as Sekai. Although it's also hinted that [[spoiler:Shun does marry her mother Mai]], so this trope maybe subverted.
* IdiotBall: It applies ''most of all'' for Setsuna when she [[spoiler:allows herself to kiss Makoto while he was sleeping, and for letting Makoto have his way with her if he promised to watch out for -- and be exclusive to -- Sekai. Makoto's past actions should have clued her in that this tactic was not guaranteed to work. Nevertheless, [[StalkerWithACrush Setsuna's crush on Makoto]] is most likely an ulterior motive for this.]]
** [[spoiler:Given what's revealed about her (see MatchmakerCrush below), it's also possible that Setsuna was acting out of desperation to get them together - because otherwise it'd mean [[AllForNothing she'd sacrificed her own chance to be with Makoto for nothing]].]]
* InVinoVeritas: While drunk during the class party, [[spoiler:she hugs Makoto, offers to let him feel her breasts, and asks if he thinks that [[ACupAngst her breasts are small]]. She also asks him if he really loves Sekai or not; if Makoto says that he hates Sekai, Setsuna will suggest that [[MatchmakerCrush Makoto should go out with her instead]], and asks if she can call him [[AffectionateNickname "Mako-chan"]]]].
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:Ironically, she ends up regretting it in the end.]]
* LapPillow: In the visual novel, to Makoto.
* LittleMissSnarker: When she's with a group of friends, Setsuna can be pretty sarcastic towards them.
** Taken up to eleven in ''Summer Days''/''Shiny Days'', where she effortlessly cuts down Makoto nearly every time he tries to act cool.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: For Sekai. Part of her justification for setting Makoto up with Sekai is to get him to fulfill Setsuna's role as this once she leaves.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:Her devotion to Sekai leads her to do some pretty terrible things to Kotonoha, whom she doesn't ''hate'' but still views as an obstacle to Makoto and Sekai's relationship.]]
* LovingAShadow: She finds out the truth about why Makoto "saved" her from bullies.
* MatchmakerCrush: She has a crush on Makoto but decides to make sure he stays with Sekai instead, so he can protect her before she goes to live abroad.
** It turns out that [[spoiler:Sekai was originally trying to help her win Makoto, but ended up developing her own feelings for him, and Setsuna quietly bowed out when it became apparent.]]
* MeaningfulName: Setsuna means "a little time" [[spoiler:before she has to bid farewell to Makoto and Sekai and go to Paris with her mother.]] However, if [[spoiler:Makoto chooses her in ''Summer Days''/''Shiny Days'']], this trope will be subverted.
* NoSympathy: For anyone other than Sekai and her friends.
** Subverted in (''Shiny'') ''Summer Days''. As it turns out, when Sekai is not involved in the situation at all, Setsuna does have a lot of sympathy towards the problems of others, even if their desires go straight against her own.
* OlderThanSheLooks: ''Looks'' very young for her age, and she's ''very'' conscious of such a thing. [[spoiler:And she's no exception to Makoto banging everything in school that has [[strike:a vagina and]] a schoolgirl uniform.]]
** Supplementary reveals that [[spoiler:Setsuna's third-generation in the inbred of the Inou Family (her father is from the Hazama Family, but is also a half-brother with her mother, Mai), unlike Sekai who's only second-generation. Genetic Problem is very much the cause.]]
* ParentalAbandonment: As with all of [[spoiler:Shun's children except for the Njiou sisters]], Setsuna's father hasn't been in her life for over a decade.
* RedOniBlueOni: In Summer/Shiny Days, the blue to Kotonoha's red.
%%* ReiAyanamiExpy
* RescueRomance: Her crush on Makoto started after he defended her from some bullies.
* RoundhouseKick: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOyNZ8fQ6ho Gives one to Makoto]] when she confronts Makoto [[spoiler:for cheating on her with Sekai, after Makoto asks her to "join" them in having sex]].
* ShrinkingViolet: In ''Summer Days''.
* StalkerWithACrush: She ''tried'' to be more discreet than the others... [[spoiler:until Kotonoha caught her kissing Makoto in his sleep]].
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Although silent-looking and almost emotionless, she's very caring towards Sekai.
* TeenPregnancy: Certain endings of the original game have an epilogue that feature Setsuna showing up out of the woodwork to cheerfully tell Makoto and whoever he's dating at the time that she's pregnant with his child (if you got those endings on a route where [[spoiler:Makoto and Setsuna sleep together during the school festival]]). There's also an ending of ''Shiny Days'' in which she ends up pregnant by Makoto, [[spoiler:along with ''her own mother'' and Sekai's mother.]]
** Canonically, she actually is impregnated by Makoto eventually, but, just see the same entry under Sekai further up.
* TokenMiniMoe: Certainly looks the part anyway, those she’s grown up a bit by ''Summer/Shiny Days''.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Though not girly, she plays Girly Girl to Sekai's Tomboy.
* TownGirls: Neither to Sekai's Butch and Kotonoha's Femme, also plays this towards Nanami and Hikari
* TookALevelInJerkass: While in the games, she is one of the nicest members of the cast, her anime incarnation is noticeably more aggressive and willing to harm others in her quest to make Sekai happy.
* ThirdOptionLoveInterest: She is the most significant girl in the series right after Kotonoha and Sekai.
* WardrobeMalfunction: Courtesy of Inori in ''Shiny Days''.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: She wants Sekai to be happy, no matter what. [[spoiler:And she's more than willing to destroy Kotonoha and Makoto's relationship to achieve this]].
* WhipOfDominance: Played for BlackHumor in ''Summer Days''[='s=] bad ending, [[spoiler:after Makoto gets both Youko and Sekai pregnant, Setsuna ties Makoto down and whips him, {{Dominatrix}}-style, with Mai as her assistant.]]

----
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:She has a child with Makoto in the "Sex friend" ending, much to Makoto and Sekai's shock.]]
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In early episodes of the anime, Hikari is established to have a crush on Taisuke like she did in the VisualNovel. [[spoiler:This doesn't stop her from sleeping with Makoto late in the series, however. Worse, her crush on Taisuke is never mentioned again.]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Apparently, Hikari is the unlucky variant for Taisuke as well. [[spoiler:She ends up roped in Makoto's bedsheets, but unlike the other girls, Hikari actually acknowledges this as a mistake ''from the beginning'' and is the first one to desert him.]]
** In the game, however, if the player is romancing Hikari, it only happens on routes where [[spoiler:Taisuke has sex with Kotonoha]], so in that particular case maybe Hikari isn't that unlucky.
** Also in the game, [[spoiler:Makoto can actually help set them up as a couple in a late-game subplot, turning her into a VictoriousChildhoodFriend]].
* CovertPervert: In the original game. She blurts out during a conversation that she finds {{Dating Sim}}s to be an interesting concept, and [[spoiler:in one scene, when Kotonoha is being raped by Taisuke, she peeks and can't tear her eyes away from the sight. Oh, and did we mention that Makoto can mess around with Hikari while Taisuke is having his way with Kotonoha?]].
** Comes up again in one route of ''Shiny Days''. [[spoiler:When she sees Oruha having sex with one of Radish's customers, she starts masturbating to the sight.]] In addition, [[spoiler:when Makoto starts sexing her up from behind, she lets him do it.]]
* TheDitz: She's the most childish and immature of Sekai's friends.
* EthicalSlut: She demonstrates little to no issue with more amorous actions such as being involved with swinging or cheating (though only after she herself loses her virginity), albeit seeming far more comfortable with her "partner" doing it instead of herself. In her endings, she either goes out of her way to "lend out" Makoto to numerous other girls simply because she thinks he's too good in bed not to share, or she rather amicably (if not happily) opts to carry his child even though he's dating Sekai (though in the latter case she keeps him strictly to herself and Sekai).
* FriendsWithBenefits: One of her two endings is this: Hikari and Makoto do it whenever the former feels like it, but they still pretend as though Hikari hates Makoto at school. [[spoiler:Oh, and this is the ending in which [[BabiesEverAfter she has a child with him.]]]] The other ending is a [[MarryThemAll Harem Ending]], in which Makoto has sex with different girls every day behind Sekai's back.
* GirlishPigtails: Known for her squid-rings hairstyle. She's almost unrecognizable when she lets her hair down.
* KarmaHoudini: In the anime ending, despite ending up tangled within Makoto's bedsheets.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: The reason why she is considered the perfect match for Taisuke.
* OnlySaneMan: [[spoiler:Like most of the other girls, she'll mercilessly bully Kotonoha. However, unlike Otome, she'll actually not ''default'' to this - in fact, rather than attacking Kotonoha because of an assumption based on her looks, she'll only seem to treat her badly if she thinks Kotonoha is trying to actively break up a relationship between Makoto and Sekai. This ironically makes her one of the few girls who don't bully Kotonoha without first having at least a semi-understandable reason for it]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler:In the anime, she's the first of the girls to bail out on Makoto once everyone learns he may have gotten Sekai pregnant.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: For Yuuki and Roka in ''Cross Days''
* {{Shorttank}}: And even more childish than Sekai at the surface.
* StalkerWithACrush: In the scene leading up to her route, Makoto catches her following [[spoiler:Taisuke while he's in turn following Kotonoha]].
* TeenPregnancy: [[spoiler:With Makoto in her "Sexfriend" route, if he doesn't pull out in time. However, she's shown to be surprisingly accepting of it - if not outright ''happy'' about it]].
* ThirdOptionLoveInterest: One of the possible ones in the visual novel.
** However, unlike fellow third options Otome or Setsuna, who already had feelings for him by the start of the visual novel, Hikari starts off disliking Makoto because she thinks Makoto is going out with Sekai and therefore causing Sekai to keep ditching her friends at lunch. So the player has to ''work'' to get Hikari to be a "third option love interest," and even then Hikari's interest is piqued only once she realizes from firsthand experience that Makoto is ''really good'' in bed. [[spoiler:However, if she ends up getting pregnant with Makoto's child, she's shown to be remarkably okay with it - in fact, she even seems happy with with development]].
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Like Sekai, the only feminine things about her are hairstyle and prying into people's affairs.
* TookALevelInKindness: In certain paths in ''Cross Days''.
** TookALevelInJerkass: [[spoiler:But while she ''is'' nicer to Kotonoha on those paths, those also have her help destroy Sekai's relationship with Makoto while Hikari is rewarded for it, by means of Taisuke dancing with her at the bonfire.]]
* TownGirls: Femme to Nanami's Butch and Setsuna's Neither
* {{Tsundere}}: In the original game. Surprisingly, though, [[spoiler:''not'' for Makoto! She has a crush on her childhood friend Taisuke, though it isn't ever brought to the forefront except in one particular sequence of events. She's also implied to be the best match for him, as she's unlikely to be the sort of girl to let him take advantage of her]]. Of course, like everything else that isn't central to the core LoveTriangle plot, this little tidbit goes out the window in the anime.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Like Setsuna, she wants to help Sekai with her love life. [[spoiler:And she's more than willing to threathen Kotonoha and plot devious deeds behind her back to do so]]. And in Hikari's case, it could also be a case of harboring resentment towards Kotonoha because of Taisuke's crush on her [[spoiler:though it should be noted that she didn't seem to have a bad opinion of Kotonoha herself unless she thought the latter was actively trying to seduce Makoto away from Sekai]].

Sekai's tall, tomboyish, sporty friend. She went to the same middle school as Kotonoha, and therefore knows a lot of rumors about the latter.
----
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: While not exactly a classical beauty, she's the tallest and seemingly most mature of Sekai's friends, and she's certainly aloof [[spoiler:until that videotape gets out...]].
* AmbiguouslyBi: in one panel in the manga, we see her in the background [[spoiler: feeling up Hikari]] while the girls are getting changed. There's also a certain scene with [[spoiler: Roka]] in the ''Cross Days'' ending "[[spoiler: Giving Up on Everything]]"
* BigNo: In the anime, she gives out a huge one [[spoiler:when she realizes that Otome's "friends" videotaped her and her boyfriend having sex ''and are showing it to the whole school''.]] Could you blame her?
* BoyishShortHair: Her hair reaches her upper-neck and she’s quite the tomboy.
* CaughtWithYourPantsDown: [[spoiler:Or better said, Filmed With Her Mini Skirt Up.]]
%%* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: [[spoiler:Has a scene with with Roka in ''Cross Days'']]
* GreenEyedMonster: Resents Kotonoha for her large bust and the attention boys give her for it, which can lead to Nanami bullying her and spreading nasty rumors.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:Has a brief one when everyone sees the tape featuring her and Kyouichi going at it. In the game, she simply cries at the sight; in the anime, however, she gives a massive BigNo and falls to her knees.]]
** Get hit with another one in Cross Days where [[spoiler:Kyouichi is revealed to be a cheater]].
* HugeSchoolGirl
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Her and Hikari's actions in one of the routes to drive Kotonoha away from Makoto to bring him and Sekai together backfire spectacularly, actually putting Makoto and Sekai's friendship in jeopardy, which came from Makoto's sheer disgust for their actions]].
* OneSideOfTheStory: Played with in the visual novel. Despite supposedly being less petty then the other girls, she never seems to realize that Sekai and Makoto weren't initially an item and never thinks of such as a possibility for why Makoto may have ended up with someone else. Granted, this is only true if it's the Makoto from the visual novel, but the point still stands that she never even seems to think the situation is anything else then Sekai being victimized, let alone it being different from what what she thinks it was at first glance.
** [[spoiler:Arguably the biggest example of this is near the end of a route where Makoto has committed to Kotonoha. Nanami blames Makoto for Sekai falling into depression on the assumption he did something to her, completely oblivious to the fact that it was ''Sekai's'' dishonesty about her own feelings that caused an issue. Even though Nanami [[JerkassHasAPoint was right that Makoto's the reason for Sekai's state]], it was because Makoto was both [[InnocentlyInsensitive unaware of Sekai's feelings]] and already committed to Kotonoha by the time she finally said anything, so it was that he couldn't return her affections as opposed to his having attacked or demeaned her. Skewing things even more is that Nanami [[CaptainOblivious didn't even know Sekai and Makoto were never together to begin with]], Sekai's time with him having been to coach him on how to get together with Kotonoha (and depending on player choice, never going farther than that), so Nanami is basing the entirety of her accusation on a version of the story that ignores any possibility of fault on Sekai's part.]]
** [[spoiler:Another major example is when she has Otome and her gang bully Kotonoha on the assumption that she's protecting Sekai from getting Makoto stolen from her, completely unaware that Sekai had actually been helping Makoto try to go out with Kotonoha and that Sekai herself had arguably become the intruder in the relationship. Nanami's actions are done with even Sekai herself being left out of the loop, which backfires spectacularly when Makoto finds out about the bullying and assumes Sekai was either in on it or was aware of it and didn't tell him because it conveniently kept Kotonoha away - something that not only torpedoes Sekai's chances with Makoto but also causes severe damage to their friendship. All because Nanami never bothered to confirm what the situation was and jumped to ''endorsing bullying'' as the first course of action]].
* OnlySaneWoman: It helps that she's the only girl in the series who ''doesn't'' get involved with Makoto. [[spoiler:At least until ''Cross Days'', where, with Hikari's and Roka's help, Makoto got even her. Though in that same game it turned out her boyfriend was a cheating jerk who once raped her sister. Couple this with her actually being one of the ''primary instigators'' of bulling against Kotonoha for no other reason then envy toward the latter's chest, and it makes it more of a cause of "only sane woman except for with one person."]]
* PassionateSportsGirl: Basketball star.
* {{Tomboy}}: Isn’t nearly as feminine as the other girls in the series, having a deeper voice and playing basketball.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Hikari's Girly Girl.
* TownGirls: Butch to Hikari's Femme and Setsuna's Neither
* ThemeNaming: With her sister, Yae.[[note]]Nanami = seven seas, Yae = eight bays[[/note]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[RuleOfThree See Hikari and Setsuna's entries]]. It's particularly jarring in her case, considering her status as one of the most mature characters of the series and the [[OnlySaneMan Only Sane Woman]], [[spoiler:seeing how she has no qualms with spreading nasty rumors about Kotonoha and getting an entire sports club to help a group of bullies, also from said club, to make Kotonoha miserable just to drive her away from Makoto, freeing the way for Sekai. Even Sekai herself is shocked by what Nanami did]].
** [[spoiler:At least part of this comes more from her general dislike of Kotonoha, who mentions that Nanami had bullied her in middle school - something else that contradicts her supposedly-mature nature when it's revealed Nanami did this simply because Kotonoha had bigger breasts then her]].

* AlphaBitch: Though she's less [[TheBrainlessBeauty fashion-obsessed]] and more [[{{Shorttank}} tomboyish]] than the standard.
* ACupAngst: Even though her bust isn't as small as Setsuna, Otome does show a complex of not being as well endowed as Sekai, Kotonoha, or her younger sister Karen.
* BeAllMySinsRemembered: Played with; [[spoiler:when Makoto catches her and the Trio bullying Kotonoha, he asks her to make sure the latter stop their harassment as he's sure she was just was following the crowd - completely unaware that she was actually the ''ringleader'' under Nanami. That her old friend and the person she is in love with is so incapable of seeing her as a bully seems to completely defang her, becoming meek and submissive to his request in stark contrast to her normally abrasive nature, implying that his untarnished view of her made her feel ashamed of something for once[[note]]Of course, the fact he was a guy she liked and he just caught her with a group that was targeting the girl he declared his girlfriend might also have something to do with it[[/note]]]].
* BerserkButton: Don't ever say that she has "no boobs".
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Unlucky variant to Makoto. It's possible for her to be victorious in the visual novel, where you can end up with her as a ThirdOptionLoveInterest.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Varies. [[spoiler:One player choice makes the difference between whether she awkwardly tries to offer some comfort to a crying Kotonoha who's been publicly dumped by Makoto, ''or'' manipulates Taisuke into raping her.]]
%%* DemotedToExtra: In the manga.
* FreudianExcuse: While Otome has both a father and a mother unlike many of the other characters, her family is far from peaceful, as her father is a womanizer and her mother pretty much goes around and threatens to kill anyone who dares to cheat with her husband. Oh, and let's not forget the fact that her sister outgrew her in [[BuxomBeautyStandard a certain area]]. These pretty much summarize her hatred toward Kotonoha (who she believes to be a temptress), Roka (whose mother was involved in an affair with her father), and Hanon (a FemmeFatale).
* HopelessSuitor: Makoto ''never'' notices her affections, thinking her just a good friend. [[spoiler:Karen has to point this out to him in ''Shiny Days'']].
* IronicName: "Otome" means maiden. She's a tomboy. [[MeaningfulName On the other hand]], she's the only one of Makoto's love interests in the game to not get pregnant in any routes.
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:She's one of the very few romance options who's not related to Makoto in some way, shape or form, yet was [[JustFriends Friendzoned]] before the game's events and her ending is well off the beaten path. Additionally, there's the fact that, aside from Hikari, the only other love interest in the original ''School Days'' she shares the "non-incest option" status with is also the only girl she actively hates and harasses on a regular basis; Kotonoha]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Among the biggest ones in the anime, [[spoiler:although she gets a slight moment of redemption when she dumps Makoto in Episode 11, after hearing about his public rejection of Sekai and realizing that he has changed dramatically from the person that she fell in love with.]]
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In the visual novel. Much of her behavior is implied to be the result of either her GirlPosse egging her on or her putting on a show to keep/earn their respect, coupled with her family's internal problems. Contrasting her brash nature, she positively melts around Makoto and will do just about anything he asks her to (including stopping the others from bullying a classmate). ''[[VisualNovel/ShinyDays Shiny Days]]'', meanwhile, plays this trope straight; although she's generally abrasive (particularly to her friend, Ai), she's very kind and sympathetic to Setsuna's plight once she gets to know her, and she's a [[CoolBigSis proactive sisterly figure]] to Inori.
* JerkJock: She's a basketball star and a bully.
* LaserGuidedKarma: During middle-high, [[spoiler:she intervened and prevented Ai and Makoto from successfully confessing their feelings.]] As karma falls back, she failed in her own confession for him too.
** [[spoiler:Likewise, her bullying of Kotonoha can result in being the catalyst for Makoto and Kotonoha getting together in one route, which subsequently seems to shame her out of ever perusing Makoto again]].
** In an another example for ''School Days'' itself, [[spoiler:her ''advice'' that caused Taisuke to rape Kotonoha causes Makoto to come back to her and declare that he is Kotonoha's boyfriend]].
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Acts this way with Makoto after overcoming her shyness towards him.
* LovingAShadow: In the anime, Makoto was a nicer guy back in junior high, and Otome is still in love with ''that'' guy who no longer exists. [[spoiler:Eventually, she is forced to see that the person she fell in love with and the person in front of her now aren't the same anymore.]]
* PassionateSportsGirl: The star of the basketball team.
* PatientChildhoodLoveInterest: Can be played straight though in other cases she remains a HopelessSuitor.
* ShotgunWedding: Parodied in ''Summer''/''Shiny Days'' with Makoto.

* SiblingIncest: [[spoiler:In ''Summer Days'', Makoto can get a threesome with her and her little sister, Karen.]]
%%* StalkerWithACrush
* ThirdOptionLoveInterest: In the visual novel, it's possible to end up with her. She's set up to be a ''literal'' third option, as her route only appears late-game, after Makoto gets so fed up with Kotonoha and Sekai fighting over him that he rejects them both publicly.
%%* ThemeNaming: With her mother, [[YamatoNadeshiko]]
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to her trio's girly girls
* TomboyishPonytail: Never seen without it, even when nude.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She plays basketball and acts masculine, but has a girl posse and a huge crush who she wants to see her as a girl.

* GayOption: PlayedForLaughs in the ''Valentine Days'' {{OVA}}, for which Makoto responded with a BigNo (above). However, played not for laughs in ''Cross Days''.
* GenreBlind: The most charitable interpretation of what he did to Kotonoha in the original game [[spoiler:wherein he rapes her while she continues to protest. With girls pretend-protesting during sex being a very common kink in Japanese porn, added to Otome telling Taisuke that girls loves forceful men, the implication is that Taisuke was such an idiot that he thought Kotonoha's genuine, unmistakable protests were pretend, as if they were both in a regular porno.]]
* ImAManICantHelpIt: If he gets Kotonoha into a relationship with him [[spoiler:(either by rape, or by comforting her broken heart)]], he starts having a lot of sex with her (regardless of whether she wants it or not) supposedly because he's crazy about how beautiful and well-developed she is.
* KarmaHoudini: Gets clean away with [[spoiler:raping and/or ''at least'' taking advantage of Kotonoha or Sekai, depending on the route you take]]. Particularly egregious seeing that almost everyone else got what they deserved.
** And in Cross Days, [[spoiler:he gets away with gang-banging Yuuki depending on the ending. However, in the "Only You" ending, Makoto stands up to him and his thugs, but he still gets his ass kicked.]]
** Perhaps the most jarring example is the ending in ''Cross Days'' where [[spoiler:he is just barely stopped from raping Kotonoha by Yuuki, but then goes on to happily dance with Hikari at the bonfire while Yuuki just gives an approving smile.]] Of course, we have to remember that the cause was [[spoiler:Otome who incited him]].
* KissingCousins: Unknowingly if he dates [[spoiler:Sekai, since her mother is also his biological paternal aunt]].
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Averted. Taisuke never had as much of a chance to get around like his birthfather, Ayumu. Played straight in terms of their [[{{Bishonen}} lo]][[NotSoHarmless ok]], though.
* LousyLoversAreLosers: He incredibly bad at sex. In most versions of the story, most of the girls want nothing to do with Taisuke and see him as an AbhorrentAdmirer, and he only gets to sleep with any of them via pressure or by [[RapeAsDrama him raping them]]. Even in versions where he does manage to sleep with Hikari consensually, it's still made explicitly clear she was disappointed with his performance.
%%* PluckyComicRelief: Especially in the anime.
* RapeAsBackstory: From ''VisualNovel/PureMail After'' [[spoiler:it's revealed that he was raped by Kei, who had mistaken him for Miki during the former's attempt to reconcile with her.]]
* StalkerWithACrush: One towards Kotonoha in most media, Sekai in the visual novel, and Yuu(ki) in ''Cross Days''.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Especially notable in ''Cross Days''. [[spoiler:While most of his more terrible actions in School Days happened because Taisuke is just ''that'' much of an idiot, in Cross Days he's perfectly aware of what he's doing to Yuuki.]]

* AlliterativeName: '''K'''okoro '''K'''atsura.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Sometimes. She ultimately means well and adores her older sister immensely, but her teasing comes on a little strong.
* AscendedExtra: A minor character in ''School Day''s, but has a much larger role in ''Summer/Shiny Days'', where she's arguably a more important character than her sister.
* BigFancyHouse: She lives in one alongside Kotonoha.
* BrattyHalfPint: At times. During ''Summer''/''Shiny Days'', she incessantly complains about Setsuna's poor performance at her waitress job, even though she knows it's her first day.
* CheerfulChild: She’s an adorable and cheery girl most of the time.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: In the anime and manga, at least.
** Whereas in visual novels, especially ''School Days'' and ''Summer''/''Shiny Days'', she'll say things like "You aren't [[FromTheMouthsOfBabes giving him any]]? I feel sorry for him" to her sister about Makoto, or encourages him to apply suncream on Kotonoha, or flirt with Makoto in front of her sister to the point she throws them off her nice boat overboard in a jealous fit.
** That said, in her "route" it's demonstrated that she doesn't really understand what her sister's supposed to be "giving". She asks Makoto to teach her but panics when he doesn't just hug her, ultimately knocking him out with a chunk of driftwood.
* {{Expy}}: Of Rin Sekihata from Pure Mail, a young girl love interest from another game of [=0verflow=] with some elements from Misaki Washino from Large Pon Pon thrown in as well…
* GirlishPigtails: Part of her hair is tied up in these with yellow hair beads.

* TheMatchmaker: To her sister Kotonoha and Makoto. She crosses into [[MatchmakerCrush matchmaker with a crush]] in some routes of ''Shiny/Summer Days''.
* TokenMiniMoe: In the ''Summer Days'' spin-off game, the 13-years-old Kokoro joins Setsuna in the {{Lolicon|AndShotacon}} parade, and even gets two scenes where Makoto boinks (and in one, outright ''molests''[[note]]they're at the beach, and Makoto has been obsessing over Kokoro due to romantic troubles elsewhere. 615** In ''Shiny Days'', he may successfully [[spoiler:force Kokoro to give him a blowjob. There is also a route where Makoto gets both Katsura daughters ''and their mother''.]] While the Japanese reluctantly let this pass, [[{{Bowdlerize}} these scenes were removed from the JAST USA release in order to avoid legal controversy]]...only to be added back in in a later free patch.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: She's totally ignorant that Setsuna's relationship with Makoto in ''Summer/Shiny Days''. This causes many of the problems in the story when Kokoro tries to set Makoto up with her sister (and possibly with herself if that fails), despite that Setsuna is pursuing or ''already has'' Makoto at the time. It doesn't amount to much initially, but the problems snowball when Shun enters the picture.

* AllLovingHero: It becomes obvious that he's one when every girl in his harem loves him. Even if he cheats on them (which is unwillingly and unintentional), they won't kill him for cheating. They'll end their friendship, but other than that, he fits this as long as he doesn't cheat.
* AmbiguouslyBi: In the first episode, he vehemently denies liking boys. But considering that in the Yuu routes, he can fall for [[spoiler: Makoto]]...
* BadassBookworm: He's a school librarian, and happens to know martial arts. Makoto knows the latter first-hand.

Considering the fact that she and [[spoiler: Mai]] are family yet both pretend to not be related to each other as well as the fact that [[spoiler:Shun and Natsuhi retained their original hair and eye color]], it might be part of them to become new people or hide their family connection.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: In one ending of ''Shiny Days'', Makoto impregnates her, Mai, and Setsuna and the four of them then try to convince Sekai to become pregnant too.]]
** [[spoiler: In one ending, she wanted to get pregnant to steal Makoto back from Kotonoha, but it's not clear whether she managed to, and even if she did, it didn't work.]]
* BrotherSisterIncest: Her ex-lover, [[spoiler: Shun Hazama]], is in fact [[spoiler: her half-brother]], and she held feelings for her brother Ayumu in the past. This trope is also played straight if [[spoiler: Makoto]] pursues her.
* ClingyJealousGirl: In some routes, she takes Makoto's womanizing ways... badly. [[spoiler: Averted in harem ends.]] Played for laughs, when Makoto walks into Radish with Karen, she orders one of the waitresses to bring her the "largest knife in the restaurant". The ending picture shows the knife stuck in the wall.
* {{Ephebophile}}: Apparently [[spoiler:Makoto]] isn't the first underage lover she's taken. Youko seems to have a thing for underage boys her daughter's age, which says disturbing things about her by itself, but Sekai is aware of it enough to make it clear she doesn't want a stepdad her age and Youko even jokes about it to Sekai, much to the latter's displeasure.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Youko, her sister [[spoiler:Kagura]], and her niece [[spoiler:Mai]] all have names related to ''Dance''.
* GenerationXerox: Whether intentionally or not she basically tries to turn her daughter Sekai into a generational clone of herself. Going so far that in various routes she forces Sekai into teen pregnancy, at a time when Sekai is the exact age Youko herself was when she became pregnant with Sekai.
** Also she nearly always makes sure, that Makoto impregnates both of them, making all Youko's and Sekai's endings in ''Summer''/''Shiny Days'', with exception of one, oyakodons.
* LoveHurts: [[spoiler: She still resents Shun to this day for not loving only her.]] Dialogue in School Days pretty much confirmed that she won't ever let him come back into her or Sekai's life again.
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[http://s.vndb.org/ch/74/12874.jpg This is Youko when she was in her teenage years.]] 15 YEARS AGO.
* ParentalIncest: [[spoiler: In ''Summer Days'' and ''Shiny Days'', you can score a threesome with her and Sekai. She doesn't actually perform any sexual acts on her daughter, but does encourage her to strip and join her and Makoto.]]
* ParentsAsPeople: It's hinted she's been raising Sekai all alone, and despite caring for her, she can't always be there for her.
* PromotedToLoveInterest: She literally takes over her daughter's place and becomes one of the most significant possible love interests for Makoto in ''Summer''/''Shiny Days''.
* ShipperOnDeck: Is this for Sekai and Makoto if you pursue Sekai's path in School Days and succeeding games. In Summer Days and Shiny Days, you can end up with Youko,[[spoiler: but if you play your cards right, Makoto scores a threesome with Sekai and Youko, who agrees to share her love with her daughter.]] And she, of ALL people, salvages Sekai and Makoto's relationship in one of the game paths, leading to one of Sekai's best endings.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Does resemble her mother, Moegi, especially in terms of personality.
* TeenPregnancy: In one route, she mentions that she was about the same age as Sekai when she became a mother, which is indeed true if you play ''Summer Radish Vacation''.
* {{Yandere}}: Played for laughs like Kokoro in the Valentine OVA.

Averted in routes where she DOES share him with her daughters.]]

----
* AllMenArePerverts: [[spoiler: Cannot withstand the sight of Futaba (his daughter with Wakaba) stripping in front of him, and so...]]
* BrotherSisterIncest: [[spoiler: More than half of his lovers have been his half-sisters, and he also impregnated his full sister, Toki. Shun may not be nearly as sociopathic as his father, but he definitely inherited his sexual hangups.]]
* DisappearedDad: To all of his children, more or less. Despite the fact that he is aware of all of his children and knows who they are, he hasn't seen most of them in over a decade. Sekai and the Nijou sisters aren't even aware that he is their father, though they know who he is, and although he has tried to be a father figure to the Nijou girls, this backfired when he ended up in a relationship with Futaba. Inori had no knowledge of Shun and doesn't even realize he's her father, and Roka Kitsuregawa has not made any awareness of her parentage obvious either, though that could change. Setsuna is the only child of his known to be fully aware of the fact that he is her father, though she refuses to acknowledge him as such.

* ParentalIncest: [[spoiler: Had a child with his own mother and even gives in to his daughter Futaba seducing him (despite knowing she's his daughter)]]

* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:His reasons for having sex with the girls along with his sister and mother is because he wants to protect them from Tomaru's clutches.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Gave one to his mother for attempting to get back with Tomaru years after he had already abandoned her best friend, Kagura. The breakdown in relations caused him to leave home and go work for Kagura for a summer. This sets up the events of ''Summer Radish Vacation'', and him meeting Youko and Mai, his future lovers.
* YouAreWhatYouHate: Like with his younger half-brother [[spoiler:Makoto,]] he hates [[ArchnemesisDad Tomaru's]] guts. Yet, he also has the [[LikeFatherLikeSon same sexual hang-ups]] as the guy and has shown more than once, to let his horniness get the better of him.

Makoto's little sister, who lives separately from him since their parents are divorced, so Itaru only gets to visit Makoto infrequently. You don't get to see her at all in School Days unless you take a couple of ''very'' specific paths. She gets ''much'' more screentime in ''Summer/Shiny Days'' since she stops by for a visit in that game's first episode.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''It'''aru '''It'''ou
* AlternateCharacterReading: Both Itaru and Tomaru are alternate readings of the same kanji (止) that both have as their given name.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Averted in School Days and subverted in Summer Days. Itaru loves big brother Makoto to pieces and her presence does not cause any problems in School Days, averting the trope. There's some childish behavior she exhibits sometimes in Summer Days (pouting over a lost opportunity for a parfait, for example, or pounding on the door if Makoto doesn't ring Setsuna's doorbell out of indecisiveness), but depending on how Makoto handles it, he can actually use the opportunity to score free brownie points with Setsuna, subverting the trope.
* CheerfulChild: Very much so, and is beloved by the characters who meet her.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Does not know about her brother's dark side. And it's better that she does not.
* CutenessProximity: Induces this in pretty much everyone around her. Even Kokoro, a fairly young child herself, fawns over how cute she is when they first meet.
* MoralityPet: To Makoto.
* PetTheDog: Sort of. Makoto's usually indecisive and can even be played as a jerk who plays around with others' feelings, but he comes off as a saint when Itaru's around. However, she doesn't show up often enough in School Days for this trope to take full effect. It's really played straighter in Summer Days, where Itaru stays for a longer visit and the responsibility of looking after Itaru makes Makoto look more mature and reliable.
* SatelliteCharacter: Itaru is extremely adorable and nice and lovable, but admittedly her character can be summed up as "Makoto's little sister."
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Take away her pigtails and she looks exactly like a younger Makoto.
* TokenMiniMoe: Subverted; unlike Kokoro in Summer Days, Itaru does not have a sex scene. She does have a bath scene with her big brother Makoto in School Days if you take the very rare paths where she even shows up in the first place, but you can't see anything objectionable (the water is ''exactly'' at the height of Itaru's nipples, covering them up) and Itaru spends the scene fishing for a rubber ducky, as innocent as it gets. There's also one line by Itaru that she might like to be Makoto's bride, but unlike how some visual novels would handle it, it's not taken any more seriously than an extremely young girl who hasn't quite figured out that you don't love a boyfriend/fiance/husband in the same manner that you would a family member.

* BigBreastPride: Though Otome ''[[ACupAngst wishes]]'' she had DCupDistress instead.

* TheCameo: She makes a brief appearance in the anime finale.

* ChildrenAreInnocent: Averted, as [[spoiler:Karen is one of the girls Makoto can end up with in ''Summer Days''.]]
* FilleFatale: Sometimes PlayedForLaughs, since Karen is a GenkiGirl who loves to tease her older sister Otome about the latter's crush on Makoto.
* GirlishPigtails: Similar to Itaru's.
* ManipulativeBitch: She's worse than Kotonoha! Where Kotonoha tries using her attractive body to win Makoto's affections, Karen actively deceives him to get into his pants. To make matters worse, [[spoiler:Makoto falls for it]].

** IronicName: In terms of western meaning, "pure" isn't the most exact thing that can be used to describe Karen.

* SiblingYinYang: If you take into account Otome's shy crush and Karen's straightforward methods of trying to win over Makoto, they are this.
* SiblingIncest: [[spoiler:One of the H-scenes in ''Summer Days'' involves her and Otome having a threesome with Makoto. The reason this counts as "incest" rather than just a regular threesome is that partway through the scene Karen starts pleasuring her sister Otome, not just Makoto]].
