[[folder:Recette Lemongrass]]
[[quoteright:165:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Recette_9440.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:165:Capitalism, ho!]]

The heroine of our tale and the character you play as. Recette Lemongrass is a young girl who, up until now, had practically not a care in the world as her father took care of everything. He's run off to go "be a hero", however, leaving her alone... and apparently saddled with the debt of a massive loan he took out from Terme Finance! Now it falls to Recette to pay back the debt, using her house as an item store.

Recette can be a little "air-headed" at times, but she's also very sincere. Despite the hardship placed in front of her, she never seems to lose her sunny disposition.
----
* AllLovingHeroine: Recette's MO seems to be helping people face inner demons and reform villains left and right by sheer force of ''adorability''.
* AmbidextrousSprite: All of the characters seem to use this, but it's most noticeable with Recette. When facing left or right, her hair bubbles face the screen.
* BerserkButton: As nice as she can be, she does have a few buttons:
** Refusal to believe she's the shop owner.
** Bullying or mistreating people is a big one.
** The biggest one is insulting Tear.
* BirdRun: Does this when running through dungeons.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: The ''boke'' to Tear.
* BrilliantButLazy: Recette is actually very good at ''selling'' stuff in her shop, however, she is an utter failure at ''management''. To quote Recette herself:
--> "Why do something today when you can do it tomorrow?"
* BuffySpeak: Dips into this sometimes.
* CardboardBoxHome: What Recette is forced to live in if you miss a payment deadline (at least until [[AllJustADream she wakes up]] for the next try).
* CatchPhrase:
** Capitalism, ho!
** Yayifications!
** Yayness!
** Yepperoni!
** Oh, carp!
* CheerfulChild: Her optimism is pretty much her defining character trait.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Particularly when food can somehow be brought into the picture.
* DisappearedDad: Her father, who ran off to become an adventurer and left his poor daughter at the mercy of his debtors.
* TheDitz: Many of Tear's jabs just sail right over her head.
* FriendlyShopkeeper: Recette is a perpetually cheerful storeowner who always wants to help her customers, but her precise product pricing is produced by the player.
* GenreSavvy: Recette proves to be something in this line during her [[spoiler:argument with Griff at the top of the Obsidian Tower]].
-->"A darkly handsome demonic overlord who only wants war and suffering, and uses an ancient, sealed evil to achieve his ends? Nowadays? Are you serious? People will just laugh at you! I'm kind of embarrassed just listening to all this!"
* GoshDarnItToHeck: "What the Heckles?" is the closest that Recette [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment even comes close]] to swearing in this game.
* HeartwarmingOrphan: As Tear puts it:
-->'''Tear:''' Something about her [Recette] inspires people to care...
* ImprobableAge: Recette is maybe 13 years old at oldest and opens up her own business. Justified though due to her DisappearedDad leaving her no real choice and having Tear to guide her.
* TheIngenue: Justified as she is still very young and possibly had a somewhat sheltered life.
* MeaningfulName: Amongst other meanings, "Recette" in French can mean "receipt" or "takings".
* NiceGirl: Easily the nicest character in the entire game. Recette is sweet, good-natured, optimistic, cheerful and adorable enough to contract diabetes. She even forgives and befriends people who had just previously just tried to kill her.
--> '''Charme:''' "That girl: something about her inspires people to care."
* ParentalAbandonment:
** Recette's father left home on an adventure and never came back. It's not clear what happened to her mother.
** In Lapis Ruins, [[spoiler:Recette abandons her own father in the dungeon after feeling too embarrassed at her father's terrible state.]]
** In the ending theme, [[spoiler:Recette gives someone (apparently Louie, since he's the one who frequently reminds her of her father) a sandwich her mother made.]]
* PerpetualPoverty: She's digging herself out of it, but she's apparently quite familiar with what plants are and aren't edible in the area, [[TearJerker for some reason]].
* ThePollyanna: Recette generally sees the best in people and, while bad news can make her panic, she adjusts very quickly.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Recette gives [[spoiler:Griff]] a great one at [[spoiler:the top of the Obsidian Tower]]... then promptly apologizes for it.
* ShippingTorpedo: She feels Griff is in love with Tear and actively says she doesn't want that to happen.
* ShockinglyExpensiveBill: Recette's father's debts are so huge, Tear refuses to tell Recette the exact amount for fear of making her faint on the spot.
* SweetTooth: Though she pales in comparison to Tielle.
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Tear. It's understandable, given everything that Tear has done for her.
* UtilityPartyMember: In dungeons her job is to sponsor the adventurer, carry items, and lend equipment.
* VerbalTic: In the English translation, she adorably doesn't seem to be capable of using the same word for agreement twice. Expect lots of lines like, "Yepperoni!" "Kay-o!" "Yayifications!" and "Pie-kay!"
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Her CheerfulChild outlook on life occasionally slips into this when she takes bad events in stride with surprising maturity.
* WorkOffTheDebt: Her entire motivation is to pay off the debt her father left her.
* YoungEntrepreneur: Forced to become one.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tear]]
[[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Tear_1841.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:230:Merde... really now...]]

Recette's straight-laced, long-suffering fairy advisor. She's the one who has been sent to collect on the loan Recette's father has seemingly skipped out on. Seeing that Recette had no way of paying her back immediately, Tear is the one who suggested starting the item shop. There are times she wonders if this was such a good idea...

Tear is a fairy, not a human. As such, she doesn't really think like a human and there are times when the behavior of Recette or others absolutely mystifies her. She's cool and analytical, but she isn't cruel; she seems to honestly want to help Recette, in addition to getting the loan repaid.
----
* BecomingTheMask: While she was sent by Terme Finance to help Recette with her debt, [[spoiler:this was nothing but a cover for her main duty, which was to gather information in Pensee and report it back to Avall. Once she got the relevant information, she realized no mortal should know about it and focused on taking care of Recette.]]
* BeleagueredAssistant: Starts out as one, but relaxes her attitude a bit once Recette's gotten a hold of things.
* BigGood: She's the sole reason Recette opened a shop and managed to run it smoothly, thus paying off the debt and helping everyone she met along the way. [[spoiler:And quite possibly saving the entire Pensee from Griff's plot]].
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: The ''tsukkomi'' to Recette.
* ButNowIMustGo: Tear must leave Recette once the debt has been cleared. At the end, however, Recette "forgets" to fill out the paperwork and Tear ends up staying with her for the Endless mode.
* TheCaretaker: It doesn't take too long for Tear to start genuinely care for Recette.
* DeadpanSnarker: Her most common attitude, acting as a foil to Recette and everyone else.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Not only is she technically TheHeavy (since the plot was set in motion because of Recette's dad's enormous debt), but Recette wouldn't even be able to pay the debt off without Tear's guidance.
* ExpositionFairy: Is kind of this for adventurers in the dungeons and [[spoiler: she was this to Avall until she stopped reporting back to him.]]
* FairyCompanion: To Recette. In fact, [[spoiler:{{Fairy Companion}}s were specifically bred by TheFairFolk upon being genocided by humanity due to them being....TheFairFolk. Facing extinction, they recreated themselves into something; anything that humanity would find useful and not kill off. This involved inhuman breeding, training, and banishing of anyone who showed aspects of the old ways.]]
* FairySexy: Especially if you're into the midriff-baring secretary look.
* ForeignCussWord: [[GratuitousFrench "Merde"]], which Tear likes to say when Recette or others are being particularly frustrating. Used as a translation for "mattaku," a non-vulgar Japanese expression of exasperation.
* GratuitousFrench: See ForeignCussWord above.
* InsistentTerminology: Tear ''is'' a loan shark. She just doesn't like being referred to as one.
* LoanShark: Downplayed; Tear is a loan shark, but she's committed to helping Recette pay off her father's debts and even gives her the idea of starting an item shop. However, she still won't bat an eye at repossessing Recette's house and kicking her to the street if she can't pay up in time.
* OnlySaneWoman: Considering how weird everyone else is, this is not difficult to become.
* ParentalSubstitute: With the stern way she has to treat Recette to get her to do anything and stay out of trouble, Tear is functionally the closest thing to a parent the girl has.
* PunchClockVillain: Downplayed. She's working for a corrupt moneylender and she will repossess Recette's house if she fails to meet the payments for her father's debts. However, Tear is working to prevent that from happening, provided Recette some much needed guidance to succeed as an entrepreneur, paying off her debts and pulling herself out of poverty.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She's cool and analytical, but she's easily flustered by Recette's instant open affection towards her, and she really does care about Recette.
* TeamChef: It's all but outright said that Tear does the lunch and dinner for Recette. It's not good food, but it's not bad either.

!Adventurers

[[folder:Louie]]
[[quoteright:183:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Louie_5708.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:183:You guys are pretty new at all of this too, huh?]]

A newly-arrived adventurer who Recette soon befriends. In a different sort of tale, Louie may well have been our protagonist - brave, earnest, loyal and trustworthy, he's everything you could want from a swordsman. Too bad he's also dead broke and doesn't seem likely to be any less broke anytime soon.

Louie is the first adventurer you get, and he fights with a sword & shield. His repertoire of special moves is a bit limited, but if you can help him out with equipment he can become quite formidable!
----
* AllLovingHero: He is nice towards everything and everyone, in one case sharing his eagerly-anticipated lunch with an even hungrier dog in the town square.
* BlockingStopsAllDamage: Louie has the ability to block certain attacks with his shield.
* BornUnlucky: Poor guy can't catch a break, if anything can go wrong for him it will.
* BoringButPractical: Louie is the first character you get, and is a pretty standard tank character. While he has no outstanding features, as well as a reliable ranged attack, he has no major weaknesses either, and can dish and take a good deal of punishment.
* DenialOfDiagonalAttack: Louie has a wide attack arc to compensate for this.
* TheDitz: It's no surprise that he and Recette get along well and drive Tear crazy.
* {{Expy}}: Gameplay wise, of [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Link (2-D)]]
* HeroicWannabe: Wants to sign up for the hardest missions at the pub that no one's taking, because the reward would set him for life. Not really bright enough to realize ''why'' no one is taking the best-paying missions.
* IdiotHero: Emphasis on "idiot". Few of things he's seen doing and situations he puts himself gets him very close to the TooDumbToLive category.
* JackOfAllStats: He's right in the middle in terms of speed, range, and power, though his shield and wide attack range also make him perfect for beginners.
* MeaningfulName: Louie's name in the original Japanese is "Lui", which can stand in for both "Louis" (as more or less translated in English) or "Lui": "Him", as in, "that generic guy".
* PerpetualPoverty: Eventually he resorts to eating plants growing around the town square.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Potentially. He tends to request scarves and other cold-weather items, and his True Card has a piece of his muffler attached.
* ShipTease: His true card says [[spoiler:he'll be with Recette forever. That said, just say with a straight face that there's no chance he might have a crush on her.]]
* SwordBeam: Signature attack for Louie once he's leveled up a bit.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Charme]]
[[quoteright:216:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Charme_303.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:216:So. Your treasures, valuables, and assorted shiny bits. I'll be taking them, if you please.]]

The self-titled "Lady Thief", Charme is a bit of an enigma. She's a self-admitted cutpurse who'll steal from any "berk" who she thinks is an easy mark, but she takes a liking to Recette (after getting her behind handed to her) and seems to be a nice person at heart (if one with a moral framework that can only be described as "loose"). She also seems to have a thing for using her ill-gotten gains to fund trips to the local pub...

Charme is a dagger-wielding thief. In dungeons, she's a bit faster than other characters (and can equip shoes that allow her to go even faster), can sprint by double-tapping a direction, and possesses several unique skills that she's apparently picked up from her life of crime.
----
* AlcoholHic: In her bar cutscenes.
* BirdRun: Due to dual wielding knives.
* CantHoldHerLiquor: Especially compared to Nagi. [[spoiler:However, see PlayingDrunk.]]
* CoolBigSis: Charme is one to Recette during the [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl rare times she isn't drunk]].
* DefeatEqualsFriendship[=/=][[DefeatMeansPlayable Playable]]: How Recette first meets Charme. Tear doesn't think that telling a thief who just tried to rob you where your item shop is located is such a great idea though.
* DifficultButAwesome: Charme is one of the most fragile adventurers you can hire and you can get downed ''really'' fast if you play sloppy with her. However with practice her block can stop nearly all enemy attacks. That said, even if you can't or don't want to learn it, she is fast enough that you can often just dodge incoming attacks.
* DopplegangerAttack: One of Charme's abilities is to create a temporary shadow that can attack along-side her mimicking her actions. She can create quite a few at one time.
* DualWielding:
** Charme only looks like she dual wields daggers as her sprite has a blade in each hand. But she only equips one weapon and only attacks once. Well, until [[DoppelgangerAttack you make clones of her.]] Then you realize [[invoked]] [[FridgeBrilliance her parry ability uses the other dagger.]]
* EasilyForgiven: By Recette, anyway.
* FallenPrincess: [[spoiler:You hear about this from time to time in the game. One of the more prominent examples is when Nagi and Charme are seen in an event at the bar. Both are talking, and at one point Nagi notices and asks Charme about her very refined eating manners, hinting that it's something only royalty would do. Charme, despite being "drunk", immediately tries to change the subject.]]
* FragileSpeedster: She is incredibly agile, and unlike with Nagi or Elan's charges, you can often run circles around slower enemies with Charme. Unfortunately she can't take too many hits, and unlike the other two, running into enemies will hurt her, rather than them.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She's spotted in the bar during many evening/night events there.
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: Charme mentions wanting to do this with Recette. She was drunk and possibly kidding though.
* LoveableRogue: Charming, refined manners and good looks? Yes. Can be ruthless at the job, even threatening ''murder''? Double-yes.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: It takes a while for Tear to warm up to Charme, but then again she did try to rob them before.
* PlayingDrunk: [[spoiler:She's actually a lot less drunk than she lets on...]]
* RedemptionDemotion: Charme's hitpoints go down drastically and she loses the fiery charge and web shooting abilities when she starts working for you. She eventually re-learns the special moves on levelling up though.
* RedemptionPromotion: On the other hand, Charme gains the [[DopplegangerAttack Mirror Image ability]] only after she starts working for you.
* TomboyPrincess: It's implied that her, of all people, [[spoiler:[[FallenPrincess is the heir to the throne of a fallen kingdom]] [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl known for its booze]].]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Caillou]]
[[quoteright:177:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Caillou_8132.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:177:Awwww maaaan, you gotta be... ahem. Well, yes, that's acceptable.]]

Caillou is, at first glance, simply a young boy in odd-looking clothes. You call him a "boy" at your own peril, however - despite his age, Caillou is an accomplished magician and is very proud of his achievements. Even though he's young, he speaks and acts in a fashion far beyond his years (usually), and seems to expect to be treated like an adult in kind. He finds it just a little hard to believe that someone like Recette could be nearly as successful as he is, though...

Caillou is a magic-user, and thus controls fairly differently than the other adventurers. He's a bit fragile, but his repretoire of special attacks is unmatched, and his magic staves work quite differently from most other weapons, too!
----
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: He hates being treated like a kid even though he has shown some childish tendencies that he's a tad ashamed of.
* BeamSpam: Sparkburst.
* BlackMage: He's a SquishyWizard who has a grand total of one utility spell, with the rest being solely for offense and weak melee combat ability (though said melee attack and its fireball version also recharge his mana).
* ChargedAttack: Hold down the attack button and he charges up an EnergyBall similar to the enemy wizards. However, it's rather slow to charge up and move.
* ChildMage: He's very young but already highly accomplished as a magician.
* DiscOneNuke: Although difficult, and heavily luck-based, one can earn his items from the Slime King, Reginald Drisby and a random drop from bats very early in the game to unlock him as an adventurer. Caillou has far more damage potential than Louie and Charme and can easily wreck anything that gets in his way with little effort or even good equipment. Caillou is powerful enough to ''trivialize bosses''.
* EmergencyWeapon: Caillou's standard attack is downright pitiful, but does return some of the damage done as MP.
* FlashyTeleportation: The Warp spell teleports you into a different area of the dungeon, it involves Calliou rising into the air with lines rising up with him.
* GeniusSweetTooth: He's a child wizard who keeps an eye out for promotional mud pies and used to go to church for the candy. Though he gets flustered when asked if that's the reason he was at church that day.
* GlassCannon: It doesn't hurt to remind: ''DO NOT'' let him get hit by stronger enemies.
* AnIcePerson: Ice Mine.
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: Heavily implied, but ultimately subverted; his friends at the orphanage still like him, and when they see him they immediately invite him to play.
* InsufferableGenius: Is charitably this, or not-so-charitably just a {{jerkass}}.
* MoreDakka: Caillou can hold down the ability key to spam one of his magic in a cone, though it runs on mana to keep him restricted.
* PainfullySlowProjectile: The [[EnergyBall balls of light]] that Caillou casts for his charged attack move so slow that it's barely worth using them to attack.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler:He was adopted from an orphanage, though we never see either set of parents]].
* PlayingWithFire: Pyrobomb.
* RunningGag: Caillou will never believe Recette's claims that she is the owner of the store.
-->You dare make a fool out of me?! You must think I'm just some idiot kid... [[HypocriticalHumor You expect me to believe someone as SHORT as you owns this establishment]]?!
* SquishyWizard: To GlassCannon extents. He is also incredibly slow, and unable to dash at all.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tielle]]
[[quoteright:174:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Tielle_2783.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:174:That's right, I need to find sis!]]

Tielle is that rarest of things - an elven child. Roughly Recette's age, she came to Pensee with her older sister, but after a trip to a certain dungeon, has gotten lost... and she may have trouble trusting strangers in her fear.

Tielle is an archer, and thus all of her attacks hit the enemy from range. If she takes time to prepare (by you holding down the attack button), she can even perform some very impressive trick shots... that can cause a lot of damage!
----
* AnnoyingArrows: In her boss fight. She's behind boxes which you must first break down, and pelts you with arrows while you're attempting it.
* BadassAdorable: Anybody who can do what she can with a bow ''has'' to be badass and she's definitely adorable. One of her abilities is even named "[[SuperMode Cuterage!]]"
* BeamSpam: Her signature attack.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Even when scared Tielle is a force to be reckoned with.
* BigEater: Especially when it comes to sweets.
* ChargedAttack:
** Tielle's bow is a hold-type charge, with 6 power levels (0-5). At 0, the arrow travels a short distance and then falls to the ground. At 1, it flies in the fired direction indefinitely, at 2 she shoots 3 arrows as such, at 3, 5 arrows, at 4, 5 arrows in front of her and one behind her, and at 5, 5 in front, 3 behind.
** She gets a 7th level when she enters "Berserk Mode": 5 arrows on both sides with a slight power increase. She also charges ''a lot faster'' when berserked, going from 0-6 in less than 3 seconds.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: While not as bad as Recette, she definitely qualifies. She even ''forgot'' about her quest to find her sister.
* CowardlyBoss: [[spoiler:Her fight has the adventurer chasing her down through three different rooms while clearing a path through various crates to reach her, after which she runs off to the next room. The last room is where the adventurer gets to fight her proper and as expected from an archer she tends to keep her distance while punishing reckless attempts on getting to her.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: Playing with her is not as easy as it seems and you must keep the attack button pressed at all times and one mistake will cancel all of her charges. In return the damage she can deal is ''amazing''.
* GlassCannon: Has incredible damage potential with her charged attack. Although she isn't as fragile as Caillou, Tielle is also quite speedy merely walking.
* InstantBandages: Tielle gets one of these on her head when she takes damage.
* NiceGirl: She's sweet, friendly, and overall good-natured.
* SweetTooth: She apparently subsists on nothing ''but'' sweets in huge quantities.
* YouAreNumberSix: From [[http://www.carpefulgur.com/drakblog/?p=14 the translation notes]] on her name:
--> The original site for the game, however, indicates a bit of a different spelling than you’d expect at first: “Tiers”. That is, the French word for “third”. When we spoke with EGS, we found out that this referred to her place in her family; that is, she was literally the third of three sisters.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Elan]]
[[quoteright:209:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Elan_1198.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:209:Then whatcha standin' around here for?]]

Elan is a somewhat gruff but good-natured aspiring priest who focuses on training his body as well as his mind. He seems to have an attachment to the Pensee orphanage, and tries his best to make the lives of the children there better. He seems attached to one former orphan in particular...

In combat, Elan is purely a brawler - all he needs are his fists, helped along by gloves. He can land quite a few blows faster than anyone else Recette can hire, but it means getting pretty close to your foes!
----
* BadassPreacher: Still in training, though.
* BareFistedMonk: Is one, in training, and very good at fighting bare-fisted.
* DifficultButAwesome: Has the worst attack range as he uses his fists to fight, but he can send enemies into a world of pain if he gets close enough or corner it.
* GentleGiant: His dialog portrait [[note]]All of which appear to be scaled correctly against each other, save fairies, who seem to get sized up[[/note]] towers over everyone else, yet he's a priest in training who spends what little money he has on presents for orphans and even wants to run an orphanage himself.
%%* GoodOldFisticuffs:
* LightningBruiser: He bears some of the highest HP, is one of the few characters that can dash and he can hit an enemy twice with his already strong normal attacks.
* MeaningfulName: "Elan" is French for "spirit" or "zeal", and can also mean "momentum" or "running up". Or "moose".
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: It's only about the fifth time meeting Elan buying sweets for orphans, discussing his ([[TrainingFromHell insane]]) training regimen, or how he's a priest in training that Tear finally realizes that Elan's not so bad in spite of coming across him running up a bar tab he couldn't pay the first time she met him.
* PerpetualPoverty: Elan is at one point noted to be even worse off than Louie, and not just with bar tabs - Elan's shopping budget is much, much lower.
* {{Shoryuken}}: A favored move of Elan's.
* WarriorMonk: In training.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nagi]]
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Nagi_5398.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:197:Oh, don't worry. My sense of direction is excellent.]]

Nagi is a young woman from a country located far to the east of Pensee. Exactly how she ended up so far from home is a mystery, even to her, although many suspect it has something to do with her sense of direction... either way, she's still a welcome sight in Pensee due to her calm, polite demeanor and willingness to help others.

Nagi uses spears in combat. This gives her the greatest reach of all the adventurers, but also means the arc of her attack is the narrowest by far. Still, she has several unique abilities, and can wear all but the heaviest of armors.
----

* ChefOfIron: Mentioned to be an extremely good chef and is also one of the finest fighters among your adventurers.
* DifficultButAwesome: As mentioned above, she has the greatest reach of any melee character. That said, she also has the most narrow reach.
* {{Expy}}: Possibly an Expy of Isumi from ''Manga/HayateTheCombatButler''.
%%* LadyOfWar
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Nagi with her spear.
* MeaningfulName: Nagi can be seen as a short term of Naginata, a polearm. Makes sense, since she uses lances.
* NaginatasAreFeminine: Being from basicly the FantasyCounterpartCulture of Japan in the setting and her overall girly YamatoNadeshiko persona, she obviously trained with those and hence uses various types of pole-arms.
* NoSenseOfDirection:
** You first meet Nagi in the Jade Way. You find her lost there (or in other dungeons) four more times before she makes it to your store. Yet, when you meet her in the dungeon the third time, after Recette gives her the directions to her shop...
-->'''Nagi''': [[HypocriticalHumor Oh, don't worry. My sense of direction is excellent. I think I can find your shop with no problems at all.]]
** She later admits she was wrong in that regard.
** Recette and Tear express shock when Nagi somehow manages to find the store.
** Later in the bar, Recette and Tear notice how Nagi is wearing clothes that are very 'eastern' (she is wearing a kimono). It dawns upon them that she might actually be much more 'lost' than they first guessed...
--->'''Recette''': {Jokingly} You didn't get so lost that you ended up here, right?
--->'''Tear''': Oh, do not be cruel. Even Nagi could not manage that.
--->'''Nagi''': {After a long pause} Ah, well...
** Further hinted at in a different cutscene - Nagi mentions she's not much good at using a knife and fork yet, as she's apparently used to chopsticks instead.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Make no mistake of her utter lack of sense of direction, her calmness and her occasional silliness. Nagi is a fighter competent enough to survive getting lost in dungeons several times and is keen enough to notice details people would overlook.
* SwordBeam: Well, actually lance beam, Nagi eventually learns.
* YamatoNadeshiko: A girl from the east with a calm, polite demeanor and a naginata.

[[folder:Guild Master]]
[[quoteright:214:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Guildmaster_1176.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:214:Alright, little lady! Give 'em your all!]]

The master of the Merchant's Guild, and one of Recette's most important allies. He oversees the activities of all the merchants in the city, and handles wholesaling of items to anyone registered with the Guild. Staying on his good side is probably a wise idea, but he's naturally rather protective of Recette in any case. He even keeps the guild open late at night, although that might be in part to avoid going home...
----
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: His actual name is never given, he's just referred to as the Guild Master.
* HenpeckedHusband: Implied in his interactions. He often refers to his wife as [[Series/RumpoleOfTheBailey "She Who Must Be Obeyed"]], and he keeps the guild open 24-7 and visits the pub to avoid going home. Though why someone as influential as him would be married to a house dragon like what his wife seems to be remains unanswered.
* NiceGuy: Overall a pretty friendly guy who tries to be as helpful to Recette as he can.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alouette]]
[[quoteright:205:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Alouette_3786.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:205:This confirms it! You are indeed worthy of being my rival!]]

The self-proclaimed rival to Recette. Alouette is the wealthy daughter of the head of the retail chain Big Bash. She has a taste for the finer things in life and will not hesitate to remind Recette of this, addressing her as a plebian and peasant.

Although she calls Recette her rival, Alouette appears to have little grasp around the concept of rivalry and will often stop by to aid Recette's store with acts of charity.
----
* EvilCounterpart: Subverted. She's presented as one in her first appearance, being a young girl with a FairyCompanion and a store of her own who comes to drive Recette out of business. In truth, she does nothing of the sort; the worst she'll ever do is throw arrogant comments around, but other than that, Alouette acts like any other customer at the shop, albeit one who's willing to buy at a high markup.
* HostileShowTakeover: Attempted to do so when the main storyline finishes, but she was only able to describe the post-game content.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Alouette does her best twelve year old imitation of this at every opportunity.
* RichBitch: For the gameplay players will love her precisely for this reason. You can present ridiculously high prices for already ridiculously pricey items, and she is always ready to pay for it. She's also the only named customer who will often gravitate towards treasures without explicitly asking for them (though others, especially house wives the Guild Master, may also buy them when presented at the windows).
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: She's never actually seeing competing with Recettear in any part of the game.
* TheRival: Appeared to be this to Recette in their initial encounter. However there are no game mechanics that actually have her compete against Recette, and in fact she will be your favorite customer as she buys at some of the highest percentages. [[spoiler:The subversion is intentional in the end since what Alouette really wants is a ''friend'', not a rival.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: To Recette, Type A. She is nothing ''but'' tsundere in the Lapis Ruins storyline.
* WorthyOpponent: How she presents her more complimentary remarks to Recette, praising her as the only person who's worthy of being her rival.
* YoungEntrepreneur: How she sees herself, though unlike Recette she doesn't have any real stake or responsibility.

[[folder:Prime]]
[[quoteright:259:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Prime_1699.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:259:Shyeah, yeah, what's up?]]

The self-proclaimed guardian to Alouette. She has quite the history with Alouette's family and owes a great deal of gratitude to Alouette's father. As acting guardian, she often acts as the voice of reason to her young charge.

While she, like Tear, is a fairy, she seems to have a better grasp on human concepts. In particular she has a fondness for biting sarcasm which she delights in using at every opportunity.
----
* DeadpanSnarker: Even moreso than Tear, and she's rather blunt about it too.
* FairyCompanion / ExpositionFairy: For Alouette. [[spoiler: Subverted in that she's ''not'' contracted to Alouette, and is in fact Free. However, she helps Alouette out due to respect to her father, who freed her. Also, it's probably not a good idea to advertise that she's not Bound.]]
* FairySexy: Prime is dressed quite revealingly for being so pint-sized.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her constant sarcasm and tendency to haggle even on prices she'll accept, Prime genuinely cares about Alouette.
* MeaningfulName: Prime can mean a "bonus", "premium" or "subsidy" in French.
* OnlySaneMan: For Alouette.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Euria]]
[[quoteright:177:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Euria_4004.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:177:Ain't there some rich, foolish adventurer out there with more money than good sense?]]

A conniving young scam artist with an eye on the world's riches, Euria just set up shop in Pensee. She has a reputation for cleaning out the wallets of countless rich clueless marks and won't accept anything less. She has set her sights on our heroine Recette who has recently come into quite a bit of money.

Despite her underhanded nature, rare treasures lie buried among her many trinkets, but only if Euria is feeling particularly generous.
----
* CharacterDevelopment: [[spoiler:Subverted. '''Every freaking time.''']]
* ComboBreaker: She largely exists to break bonus XP Just Combos by demanding utterly unreasonable deals.
** The trick, if you're curious...is to make sure she never enters the shop in the FIRST place. She loves Gaudy, and Dark...so make sure you're bright, and not gaudy...and she'll never enter!
* ConMan: Especially when she comes into your shop to sell stuff. She just ''loves'' to try and sell you stuff at over 300% the base price and that's only because you usually don't have enough money to fulfill her standard ''500%'' demand.
* HonestJohnsDealership: She sells [[SarcasmMode rare, wondrous]] items and accepting a wider spread of prices for them... with that spread centered at ''500%'' market value.
* LethalJokeCharacter: While Euria mostly sells crappy things and only at ridiculous prices ('''500% is her default''') she can also bring some hard to get rare fusion materials to help you fill that LastLousyPoint. Worse, if you aim for OneHundredPercentCompletion, there will be no way around her outside of outright cheating.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Griff]]
[[quoteright:205:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Griff_5991.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:205:... How happily, moronically innocent young humans are.]]

A mysterious member of the demon kin who has been wandering around Pensee. He bears great disdain towards the fey and despises the humankind for their actions.
----
* BadassCape: Well, cloak rather, but it certainly makes him look very cool.
* CharacterDevelopment: Starts particularly arrogant and unwilling even to hear counterarguments, but he gets better. Eventually.
* TheComicallySerious: Really. He's like a gender flipped Tear when it comes dealing with Recette's mixture of ingenuity and quirkiness.
* DeadpanSnarker: Puts up with Recette's silliness about as well as you'd expect.
* DualWielding: [[spoiler:He fights with two claws]].
* FlashStep: [[spoiler:His dash.]]
* GlassCannon: [[spoiler:He hits quite hard, but can't take as much punishment]].
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:He accepts his defeat with dignity and praises Recette and Tear's effort. Once he is defeated for good he even goes as far as sealing the Archdemon again to prevent it from destroying Pensee]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He may come of as a sheer {{Jerkass}} who you may hate even more than '''Euria''' especially for his FantasticRacism. [[spoiler:But once he almost falls to RedemptionEqualsDeath and how well he accepts being trapped in a world he all but outright said he ''hates'' you might grow a new opinion about him]].
* LovingBully: Recette think's that he's this for Tear, to the point of it being a running gag. In reality, he has nothing but contempt for her.
* NobleDemon: He is disdainful to humans and by extension, fairies due to their submission to humans. Still, he doesn't do much evil [[spoiler:even before he gets defeated and clearly comes off more as a WellIntentionedExtremist than truly evil in Obsidian Tower.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Griff delivers a particularly strong one to Tear. He actually goes so far he manages to anger [[ThePollyanna Recette]] for the only time in the game. [[spoiler: No wonder why she was harsh with him afterwards. It doesn't last though.]]
** However [[spoiler:atop the Obsidian Tower he finds himself on the receiving end by '''Recette''' no less.]]
* RedemptionDemotion: [[spoiler:Thanks to his action of re-sealing the Archdemon. It isn't on the same degree as Charme since he keeps all his abilities and only really gets a fair HP deduction]].
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:After his defeat in the final floor of Obsidian Tower he is forced to re-seal the Archdemon to prevent it from awakening and going berserk. This is subverted, however]].
* SpecsOfAwesome: Denotes his smarts.
* TurnsRed: [[spoiler:During the final battle against him Griff uses the Demon Soul which further increases his attack and speed]].
* WalkingSpoiler: Highlighted something out of sheer curiosity? You might have spoiled a lot of surprises about him.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He feels that the Demons were wrongfully banished by humans (and, technically he's not ''that'' far from the truth) and wants to bring them back. [[spoiler:By using of a ForgottenSuperWeapon.]]
%%* WolverineClaws

[[folder:Arma]]
[[quoteright:276:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Recettear_Arma_9144.gif]]
[[caption-width-right:276:"Missarma". Negative. Arma.]]
----
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:In the Lapis Ruins storyline by Avall.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Especially after the events of Lapis Ruins.
* DungeonMaster: She is the administrator of [[spoiler:the entire region and all dungeons in it]].
* EmotionlessGirl: Though why she is like that should be obvious just from her appearance. [[spoiler: She sounds more normal in the final scene of the BrutalBonusLevel, since she's severing ties with the system that requires her to be emotionless and impartial.]]
%%* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:Depending how you view the Endless Mode]].
* GlowingEyes: When she accesses data, like when analyzing wine at a wine tasting, her eyes glow orange.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When [[spoiler:Arma is]] controlled by [[spoiler:Terme Finance President, Avall]], and made to fight, her eyes glow yellow.
* MeaningfulName: Arma's name complements another fellow Golem [[spoiler:and final boss of the story mode, Geddon]]. It also means "weapon" in several languages and, well, her weapons are arm-mounted to boot.
* MoreDakka: [[spoiler:Some of Arma's equipment allows her to spam bullets in a large range as her standard attack.]]
* PurposelyOverpowered: [[spoiler:Arma's various weapons give her a wide range of attack options with impressive stats, and several even recreate the special attacks of other adventurers while being based on a quickly-recharging ammo bar with no significant nerf. She's your reward for clearing the long Lapis Ruins, so this was probably intentional.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When she's at brink of losing control her eyes turns red.
* RobotGirl: A magical one, specifically a golem.
* ThirdPersonPerson: [[spoiler:When talking about her duties as the DungeonMaster, refers to herself so obliquely ("This unit") she sounds more like a voice of a HiveMind.]]
* ThisIsADrill: [[spoiler:One of her weapons.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Aside of the obvious you might end up spoiling the story behind her if you read anything tagged.
* WaveMotionGun: [[spoiler:Arma's special attack. You can only fire it once, and it consumes all your SP]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Terme's CEO]]
!!Avall
The head of Terme Finance, and the man Recette owes her debt to.
----
* BigBad: Technically this, since he's the one forcing Recette to pay a ridiculously huge sum in a short amount of time. [[spoiler:He plays this straight in the Lapis Ruins storyline in which his EvilPlan is to control the power of the dungeons. The debt was also a lie to give Tear an opening to gather information about the dungeons.]]
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Explains why he would pull a little girl like Recette through what she had to endure, all for the sake of money. [[spoiler:Except it's a ploy.]]
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler: His plan gets thwarted, but since he never shows up in person and only uses Arma as a puppet, he gets away clean. And he still has both a ton of pix from Recette and control of Big Bash. You barely even hurt him at all.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Sending a loan shark to collect the debt from Recette's father comes to bite his ass to put it mildly.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: A guy like him seems pretty misplaced in an idealistic world like that of Recettear.
* XanatosGambit: [[spoiler:If Recette fails to pay her debt, he gets a new shop to expand his business with. If she ''does'' succeed in paying it off, than, through Tear's reports, he'll have all the information he needs to take control of the world's dungeons, and by extension, the ''world''.]]
