Most [[Fanfic/RainbowDoubleDashsLunaverse Lunaverse]] main characters are basically based on [[AscendedExtra background]] [[MemeticBystander ponies]] and [[EnsembleDarkhorse one-shot/supporting characters]] from [[Characters/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic the original series]], with canon!main characters appearing in minor roles. However, the [[AlternateUniverseFic world building]] has fleshed many of them out in different direction from the original show, while still retaining some personality tropes.

All character pages are still in-progress, as new tropes are added along the characters gaining screen time, and may include accidental/non-marked spoilers.

!! The Dark & Omnipotent Antithesis
!!!An extremely powerful and psychotic alicorn pony who is devoted to murdering both Twilight and Trixie in ''Crisis on Two Equestrias''.

* AntiMagic: She can negate and shut down magic, including creating a field over the entire Everfree Forest to stop teleportation. Also has a double meaning, since [[spoiler:Friendship is Magic in the MLP universe, and thus Antithesis is much the embodiment of anti-magic along with anti-friendship.]]
* AxCrazy: When she finds out there's two Trixies and two Twilights, she's initially confused, then grows to excited because that means there's more of them to kill, and eagerly asks if there's more yet.
* CardCarryingVillain:
-->'''Antithesis:''' Am I evil just because I want to kill you? Am I evil just because I would rather tear you limb from limb and watch you bleed out one at a time, and I’m genuinely sad I won’t be able to? Am I evil just because after I’m done here I’m going to go to Ponyville and slaughter everypony you four have ever loved out of pure spite?! \
'''Twilight:''' Yes! \
'''Antithesis:''' ({{beat}}) Excellent! I ''like'' knowing my place in the world! So few ponies do.
* CombatSadomasochist: She gets a buzz out of feeling and / or causing pain.
* DissonantSerenity: [[spoiler:When finally dying, oddly enough.]]
* EvilCounterpart: To Twilight and Trixie [[spoiler:as well as the Element of Magic itself]].
* ForTheEvulz: Why she wants to kill the Twilights and Trixies from both the Lunaverse and Celestiaverse.
* FusionDance: [[spoiler:Takes elements of both Twilight and Trixie for her physical appearance, down to her cutie mark being a combination of theirs.]]
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: She has no goal or personality beyond being a psychotic pony that wants to go on a murderous rampage, starting with Twilight and Trixie. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], though, in that [[spoiler:she is literally created out of the animosity between the two bearers of the Element of Magic and their interdimensional counterparts, and hasn't even existed long enough to start forming any other motivation]].
* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler:She isn't actually a pony at all, and is the first to admit it.]]
* MadeOfEvil: [[spoiler:Quite literally made out of distilled hatred and dislike.]]
* MeaningfulRename: Her first choice of name was "Twixie". She quickly ditched it after getting a bad reaction from the Twilights and Trixies.
* MesACrowd: She displays the ability to split herself into multiple bodies, though with nowhere near the ease Luna has. It apparently feels painful merging again, akin to pins and needles.
* PowerOfTheVoid: Both Trixies note she technically doesn't cast magic, she rips magical holes in existence and spells rush out through them. Her anti-magic spheres are experienced by wrapping the victim in nothingness.
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:She doesn't, but while dying she states that her one regret is that she didn't take at least one Twilight or one Trixie with her.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Completely averted at her own instance. She regrets nothing she's done, and would have done worse if she could.
** Said aversion is enforced by WordOfGod: Anyone who feels sympathy for her is, at best, horribly misguided.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:Is created by the shattering of the Element of Magic, meaning that she's only a few hours old at most when she first meets her "mothers".]]

!! Bray:
!!! Tamberlaan donkey prince. Made a deal to Grogar to kill his father, siblings and ponies to become king of Tambelon.

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: A few glimpses of Tambelon before what Grogar did show Bray wasn't at all liked by his subjects. That might have something to do with his winning personality.
* AbsoluteXenophobe: Wanted to kill Tamberlaan ponies in order to rule Tambelon.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Returns to life after Grogar is defeated]].
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: First he betrays his family, the rulers of Tambelon, to Grogar. The he plans to betray Grogar to take Tambelon for himself. [[spoiler:He gets a chance to enact the second, too, and takes it. It...doesn't work out.]]
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler:Gets his soul ripped out by the newly immortal Grogar. ''Ouch''.]] [[spoiler:[[BackFromTheDead He gets better...]] [[FateWorseThanDeath not that it helps him much.]]]]
* DirtyCoward: Completely okay with backstabbing, betrayal, and running away.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Perfectly okay with murdering his own family though Bray may have been, he was angered (albeit for practical rather than moral reasons) by Grogar's murder of practically all of Tambelon.
** He has no desire for undeath or any other form of immortality. Even when he thought he'd won, he only planned to try and create an empire to rule for the remainder of his days.
* FantasticRacism: Among his other failings, he's also specist, frequently referring to the Bearers as "short eared nags", and his initial understanding of what Grogar was going to do was he'd kill Bray's family and all the ponies on Tambelon.
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler:He comes back to life on Tambelon after Grogar is defeated, but also after everyone else has left. His means of casting spells, however, was destroyed, and his only way to re-create it was accidentally teleported off of the island. Thus, he is trapped on an overgrown forested island save for a ruined city, with no ability to escape.]]
* HateSink: It is pretty impressive than even compared to his boss, who murdered an entire civilisation in an instant, Bray is still more unpleasant and unlikeable by a mile. Probably because he deliberately brought Grogar to Tambelon to kill his siblings.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:His own actions screw him over and trap him on Tambelon with no magic or way of getting off the island]].
* ItsAllAboutMe: He brought Grogar to Tambelon to kill his parents, brother and sisters just so he could be king. When Grogar killed pretty much everyone in Tambelon, he was outraged no because of the whole "mass murder" thing, but more because Grogar killed ''his'' subjects.
* RewardedAsATraitorDeserves: [[spoiler:Twice. First killed by Grogar, ''then'' after coming back to life, finds himself trapped in the ruins of the kingdom he helped destroy.]]
* RoyalBrat
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Three-fold. He brought Grogar to Tambelon, allowing him to kill the Tamberlaan. He killed Grogar, triggering the final step in the ram's lich transformation. And it was his misfired spell that teleported the world's biggest collection of arcane knowledge to Luna-knows-where.
* SmugSnake: Bray has a healthy opinion of himself, and looks down on everyone who isn't him. He's convinced that with the magical knowledge contained within Spellhold he'd be able to form a mighty army, and any and all problem he might face, like say a pair of angry alicorns, will be easily dealt with. [[spoiler:It's delicious to watch his breakdown when he comes back to life, and realises than an entire life of being waited on and served means he has ''no'' idea how to actually fend for himself.]]
* TheStarscream: Twice, even: he's the one who brought Grogar to Tambelon in the first place, so that Grogar could kill Bray's father and siblings so that he could be King. Nowadays, he wants to overthrow Grogar so that he can rule Tambelon (to have access to its vast libraries of magic).
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Manipulated by Grogar into granting him immortality.]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:Double subverted. Once Grogar gets his soul back, he informs Bray that he intends to use him as the final sacrifice in Grogar's plan to achieve immortality. The ensuing fight ends with Bray [[DisneyVillainDeath chucking Grogar off of a balcony]]. The double subversion comes when Grogar survives, reveals that someone had to kill him in order to turn him into a lich, and ''then'' kills Bray.]]
* WeakButSkilled: His approach to magic.

!!Discord:
!!! The Spirit of Chaos. Originally contained in the Tree of Harmony's EvilCounterpart, the Tree of Discord, he was freed by the misguided efforts of an unknown creature and subsequently took the form of a deranged parody of his liberator. Despite having been defeated and contained by Celestia and Luna, he nonetheless holds a sizable presence in the story due to cultists and his own "descendants" trying to either free him or continue where he left off.
* TheAntiGod: To the {{God}} of the Elements of Harmony. He's defined by his opposition to Harmony, and it can overpower him, but in all other contexts he's basically omnipotent.
* CardboardPrison: The Maneverse version of Celestia believes that Discord will always render whatever prison he is in as one of these. If it's time for him to escape, then he will escape no matter the measures in place.
** It says something about the power that he has that his statue was imprisoned in concrete, is under eight different layers of magical wards, and said block of concrete has been buried, and yet both Lunaverse Luna and Maneverse Celestia ''still'' consider it this.
* TheDreaded: He hasn't walked the land in millenia, but the very thought of him gives both Luna and the mad Corona pause.
* EldritchAbomination
* EndOfAnEra: Singlehandedly ended what was considered by many to be Equestria's Golden Age, bringing an end to over three thousand years of prosperity and heralding a much darker and more treacherous era.
* EntropyAndChaosMagic: The living incarnation of the power of Discord.
* EvenMoreOmnipotent: The Elements of Harmony can overpower him, but nothing else in this setting can even challenge him.
* EvilCounterpart: The Lunaverse version of Discord is pointedly the ArchEnemy of the very concept of Harmony, and the Tree specifically.
* EvilKnockoff: His physical form was modeled after the individual that freed him. Given the patchwork of creature parts that make up his body, it's hard to tell what that poor sap actually was.
* TheGhost: Mentioned many times throughout the Lunaverse's run, including the first episode. [[spoiler:He doesn't appear until the tail-end of Season 2.]]
* TheJuggernaut: One of the Alicorn Sisters is enough to best most foes and together their raw might and prowess were enough to vanquish every threat that came their way. Their need to bolster their abilities with the Elements of Harmony to face him, and the fact that he's the only menace that required this extraordinary measure on their part says a lot about how powerful he was.
** As WordOfGod puts it:
-->'''[=RainbowDoubleDash=]:''' Within the context of the Lunaverse, there is ''nothing'' beyond Discord and the Elements; they're the top-tier movers and shakers... On a scale of 1 to 10, Discord is ''the guy making the chart'', completely outside any kind of power rating...And the Elements of Harmony are even ''stronger'', but limited by the fact that they have no (discernible) independent will of their own and so must be manipulated by (comparatively, even alicorns count for this purpose) mortal beings, who have mortal minds and mortal limitations on what the Elements can do.
* MadGod: Powerful enough to effortlessly overpower even the alicorns... and completely and utterly insane.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [=RainbowDoubleDash=] has stated that [[spoiler:his attempt to break Corona by showing her exactly what she's become ends up being what restores Celestia to normal]].

!! Grogar:
!!! Demon Ram[[spoiler:/Lich]]. Committed mass genocide to the Tamberlaan 2,000 years ago as part of a ritual to gain immortality.
* AGodAmI: Blatantly claims to be a god [[spoiler:during his VillainousBreakdown. The Luna-6 are quick to [[KilledOffForReal correct this delusion.]]]]
* TheArchmage: Powerful enough to have challenge Luna and Celestia together two thousand years ago. He lost, but he apparently put up a Hell of a fight. Celestia and Luna have both acknowledged him as likely being the most powerful mortal spellcaster to have ever lived, with only Starswirl the Bearded providing any competition.
* DeadpanSnarker: It's very deadpan, and most of it is directed at Bray. For example, a glimpse of what happened just after he killed near-everyone on Tambelon has him noting that a few beings survived and fled, and that Bray could try and ingratiate himself to them.
* DealWithTheDevil: Traded his soul to Tirek in exchange for knowledge to help him gain immortality. [[spoiler:He was disappointed to find out that the ritual he had planned ''required'' him to still have his soul.]]
* EvilOverlord: Intimidating fortress in a ruined city? Check. Plan to take over/kill the world? Check. Hordes upon hordes of faceless goons? Check. Fearful sinister second-in-command at his beck and call? Check. Dark magic? Check. The only things he's missing are the quirky miniboss squad, black wardrobe (but then, his fur is soot-gray), and powerful but vulnerable MacGuffin.
* EvilOverlordList: Actually follows it pretty closely, given that he has limited resources and time to work with and enemies that have no interest in negotiating with him. He skips straight to trying to kill the L6, doesn't pontificate about his plans, takes steps to protect himself, and always tries to send overwhelming odds against his enemies. The one exception is his mistreatment of Bray, [[spoiler:but that was only because it formed a fundamental part of his plan.]]
** [[spoiler:Notably, however, once he becomes a lich, he ''stops'' following the Evil Overlord list, perhaps because he thinks he doesn't need it anymore. It doesn't end well for him, right up to his death being nearly instant after exclaiming "this is impossible! I am a god!"]]
* FatalFlaw: Bray considers Grogar's impatience to be his biggest weakness.
* IronicEcho: [[spoiler:Berates Bray before killing him that Bray's goals were always so small compared to Grogar's. Later, though, Luna says that ''Grogar's'' goals are so small compared to most of the monsters ''she's'' fought.]]
* KilledOffForReal
* LivingForeverIsAwesome: Grogar certainly seems to think so, and achieving immortality is his ultimate goal throughout The Return of Tambelon. [[spoiler:And as of Chapter 10, he's pulled it off.]]
* MyDeathIsJustTheBeginning: Kind of a requirement for becoming a lich, after all.
* OurLichesAreDifferent
* {{Necromancer}}: His power seems to derive from stolen life-force, which he can then use to animate golems. After slaughtering all of Tambelon, he has a lot of life-force to work with.
* NighInvulnerable: Already very hard to kill as a lich, but on Tambelon he can't be stopped by anything short of the Elements.
* PlaceOfPower: The sheer number of people he killed on Tambelon created a zone of necromantic energy that augmented his lich transformation.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Victim of one from Luna, who notes that he's hardly the first monster that she's ever fought, and he's not even the first one to seek nor even to ''gain'' immortality. He's just the only one who's never had any goal beyond that. For all his power and intelligence, his goals and desires were just so ''[[IronicEcho small.]]'']]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: On account of his not having a soul anymore. [[spoiler:They turn back to green when he gets it back.]]
* RuleOfThree: "The Return of Tambelon" details the third time his prison failed over the centuries.
* UnPerson: He is described by Luna that he had done so many atrocities that he had to be erased in history. This is also to deny him the satisfaction of any immortality that he desired, including from being remembered.
* VictoryByEndurance: How he plans to defeat Luna and Celestia. Both of them are much better fighters than he is, and either of them has more offensive power, but between his lich transformation and the vast well of necromantic power he created by killing all the Tamberlaan, he is basically indestructible and tireless. He can fight for weeks if he has to. The alicorns can't.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:Just before his death.]]
* YourSoulIsMine: See the details of his DealWithTheDevil. [[spoiler:And in order to pull off the ritual that would turn him into a lich, he forcibly tool his soul ''back'' from Tirek when he got the chance. As a lich, he's able to take the soul of anyone against their will, which even the demonic Tirek can't do.]]

!!Lord Kerzog
!!!An ancient Saurian warlord who cheated death by means of a phylactery.
* AndIMustScream: Not only is it his punishment of choice for minions he no longer needs, [[spoiler:his former emperor included]], but he winds up in this state after his final defeat.
* BackFromTheDead
* ExactWords: Promissed Ritter the weight of his teammates in gold for helping him to regain his golem body. He turns those teammates into gold.
* {{Golem}}: His new form upon resurrection.
* OmnicidalManiac
* PerpetualMotionMonster
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: As he admits, he knows the Saurians are dead and gone. The plan with the golem body was to just smash everything in his path until someone smashed him.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Disposes of Ritter's team as soon as he's restored.

!!Squirk
!!!An EldritchAbomination from the dawn of time that slept in the deepest bottom of the oceans. Used to rule the seas with terror.

* EldritchAbomination
* PowerOfHate: His power and magic are mostly ''pure hatred''.
* SealedEvilInACan: A lance was used to imprison him in a perpetual sleep.
* {{Telepathy}}: His way of communication.

!!The Windigo
!!!Ice Heart's father. He reappears in Season 2, looking for his son. Seems to communicate via telepathic images.

* AntiVillain: It's not looking to harm anyone. It just wants to find its son.
* WeaksauceWeakness: ThePowerOfLove, like all windigos. Not a good match with a kid who wants to know his dad. Baring that, fire, and plenty of it (being made of ice and all).

!!Tirek
!!!A demon responsible for causing widespread chaos in Equestria until Celestia and Luna banished him to Tartarus.

* ArtifactOfDoom: The Rainbow of Darkness is his, [[spoiler:until Solrathicharnon has it stolen and takes it as his own.]]
* BreakTheBadass: [[spoiler:Luna stole some of his power to become Nightmare Moon. A thousand years later, he's in incredibly poor shape, and utterly horrified at being dragged out of Tartarus by Grogar.]]
* TheCorrupter: [[spoiler:Luna states he enjoyed bringing out the worst in others.]]
* CrazyPrepared: [[spoiler:He hid fragments of his soul all over the place, in the hope they'd absorb negative emotions and become whole beings, at which point they would free him. Luna and Celestia thought they'd managed to get them all, but as proven on at least two occasions, they missed a couple.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: [[spoiler:Even as a broken shell of himself, he still manages to get his snark off at Grogar.]]
-->'''''I required one hundred ponies, not ninety nine. I cannot be held responsible for your inability to count.'''''
* TheDevilIsALoser: Tirek is probably one of the more evil characters to appear in the Lunaverse. [[spoiler:But when he shows up in Tambelon, he's had much better days, looking thin, emaciated, and completely loses it at the thought of being dragged out of Tartarus.]]
* TheDreaded: [[spoiler:At the merest hint of his reappearance, Luna tells the ''Wingsong'' to get away, and then prepares to obliterate all of Tambelon, just to prevent his possible escape.]]
* EvilCounterpart: To [[spoiler:Mi Amore Cadenza, due to the circumstances of both her birth and his loss of power. Tirek himself states that Cadenza's soul was forged by the Elements of Harmony themselves to be as unlike him as possible.]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: He speaks in entirely bold font, and his voice is mentioned to "reverberate", [[spoiler:even when he's a broken shell of himself.]]
* FantasticRacism: Grogar mentions he ''hates'' ponies, and has a particular dislike for unicorns.
* GreaterScopeVillain:
** In ''The Hero of Oaton'' and ''The Return of Tambelon''. [[spoiler:Played straight in the former, where a shrine to him is responsible for corrupting Tarnished and almost destroying Oaton, but subverted in the latter, where Grogar summons him, takes his soul back from him, and chucks him back to Tartarus.]]
** Also, hinted to be one for ''Nightmares Yet to Come'', but in what way hasn't been revealed (beyond a bit of poetry at the very beginning, and some of the villains raiding what could be an old temple dedicated to him at a later point).
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Grogar calls him on it, but Tirek brushes him off.
-->'''Grogar:''' You have become nothing more than a wretched, pathetic coward.\
'''Tirek:''' '''''The cowards survive.'''''
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: He regarded Luna and Corona's battle as "beautiful".
* KnowWhenToFoldThem: [[spoiler:To give up one more of the souls he has left would diminish Tirek even further, but he eventually gets "persuaded" to hand Grogar's back to him rather than stay in Tambelon and deal with Luna.]]
* MadeOfEvil: To the point where Corona believes that he is more malignant than Discord, even if not as powerful.
* PhysicalGod: At the height of his power, he was roughly equal to Celestia in terms of ability and might. [[spoiler:These days...less so.]]
* ReligionOfEvil: The ghuls of Naqah worship him as T'irek, father of all darkness. [[spoiler:Oaton was also founded by some worshippers of his.]]
* SealedEvilInACan: [[spoiler:He was sealed away in Tartarus long ago. Not to mention those several fragments of his soul lying around the world.]]
* TryToFitThatOnABusinessCard: Lord of the Midnight Castle, the Shadow in the Soul, the Tyrant in the Pit, the Liar and the Thief, and the Bringer of the Night That Never Ends. A non-canon fic adds "Lord of All Sorrows".
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: To [[spoiler:Corona. Him praising her makes her have a partial HeelRealization and decide to simply usurp Luna in Canterlot rather than conquer all of Equestria by force.]]

[[/folder]]

!!The Elements of Failmony
[[folder:The Elements of Failmony]]
A group of supposed Element Bearers gathered by Twilight Sparkle in the LooseCanon tie-in ''Elements of Insanity'', in order to prove Trixie unworthy of the Element of Magic.

!!Clover Charms
!!!An unfortunate pony better known by her ironic nickname of ''Lucky''. Though not Twilight's original choice for Laughter, was deemed a perfect fit after they spoke.
* AffectionateNickname: She has a habit of calling Twilight "Tenbs".
* BizarreTasteInFood: Improvising meals put together from whatever was most heavily discounted has led to her developing lots of... ''interesting'' recipes.
** Heaven help us all if she and Trixie ever teamed up to host a dinner party.
* TheBusCameBack: Some time after Twilight's house arrest, Clover got in touch with Twilight and started hanging out with her again, reappearing in ''Contest of Champions''.
* CannotTellAJoke: It's not that Clover cannot make a joke. It's just nopony laughs at them.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DistaffCounterpart: Of a [[http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Lucky male]] background pony with whom she shares her nickname, cutie mark, and coat color.
** CompositeCharacter: In addition to the male Lucky, another background pony considered for the role was [[http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Shoeshine Shoeshine]] from whom she got her curly mane and arguably gender.
* TheGadfly: She enjoys messing with Twilight's head, claiming ignorance of Star-Swirl the Bearded, then Clover the Clever, then claiming Twilight just made the word "anamorphic" up.
* IronicNickname: She's got plenty of ''luck'', unfortunately it's all bad.
* MeaningfulName: When combined, her nickname and last name are the same as a well-known kids' breakfast cereal. Her first name and cutie mark are even one of the associated marshmallows.
** According to WordOfGod this was a happy accident of changing the character's name (originally Lucky Clovers) to fit her IAmSong.
* ThePollyanna: Though not out of naiveté or ignorance. She is all too aware that with her rotten life she would have every good reason to [[{{Wangst}} wallow in despair]], but instead chooses to meet each and every day with an uncompromising [[AngstWhatAngst smile]].
--> ''How could that not be the easiest choice in the world to make?''
* {{Schadenfreude}}: Is all too aware of this effect, and this is primarily how she brings others cheer: by making them glad they're not ''her''.

!!Lemonhearts:
!!!Unicorn. The public at large knows her as the generous care-taker of a group of orphans which is why Twilight made the good-faith choice of selecting her as the Element of Generosity. Privately, though, she represents a threat that not even Luna herself seems to be aware of; that's because she and her charges are descendants of Discord himself ready to spread chaos in their ancestor's name.
* BitchInSheepsClothing
* BodyHorror: Using her chaos magic warps her body as well as her mind.
* BreedingCult: She originally comes form a family that was trying to consolidate the discordian bloodline and in so doing give rise to a new avatar of chaos.
* GameFace
* OrphanageOfLove: Runs one as a cover for her true nature.
* PhlebotinumOverload: Ultimately defeated not by any of the heroes but by OD'ing on her own chaos magic.
* TokenEvilTeammate
* VillainWithGoodPublicity
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Lampshaded by Discord. If she wants infinite power, she'd better be prepared for the infinite madness that comes with it.

!!Loosey Screws and Woody Wittles:
!!!Earth pony mother and her pegasus son. Lossey is the Lunaverse version of the pony who barked like a dog in Read It and Weep. Silverstar selected her to be the Element of Kindness because she was someone noble and good he'd encountered during the unspecified atrocity that led to his current state of self-doubt. Sadly, the horrors of the incident have reduced her to a shell of her former kindly, energetic self despite Lemonhearts' 'healing' her. Her caretaker son is somewhat too ready to forgive Silverstar for his liking...which qualifies him to be her stand-in.

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Loosey was the one who suggested her family move out west, [[spoiler:so she feels she's responsible for the death of her husband]]
* BrokenBird: Even though she's able to speak again, she's a ghost of the friendly figure she was before the nameless catastrophe that destroyed Silverstar's faith in himself.

!!Silverstar
!!!A formerly heroic Frontiersman who has become a shell of his former self following a personal tragedy. Twilight's choice for the Element of Loyalty, though the biographies suggest that he'd have made more sense as Element of Honesty.
* DrowningMySorrows: Sought solace in the bottom of bottles.
* FailureKnight
* IGaveMyWord
* KnightInSourArmor
* MissedHimByThatMuch: He ''almost'' found Twilight before Shining Armor and the Shadowbolts did.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Fills an unspoken and unacknowledged void left by Twilie's inability to contact her BBFFF.

!!Snowflake [=McHugeLarge=]
!!!A highly enthusiastic pegasus bodybuilder with underdeveloped wings. Twilight deems him the Element of Honesty, though the biographies suggest that he'd have been a better fit for Loyalty.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: His mind has a tendency to wander, which combined with his poor hearing means he often misinterprets what ponies were saying.
* {{Determinator}}
* DreamCrushingHandicap: His underdeveloped wings and impaired hearing mean he can't become a Wonderbolt or royal guard. Not that he's letting that stop him.
* DumbMuscle: Percieved as such due to his many quirks.
* InspirationallyDisadvantaged: {{Invoked}}: Unable to serve in the military due to his underdeveloped wings and poor hearing, he instead starts trying to inspire the youth of Equestria by demonstrating what hard work can accomplish.

[[folder:Non-canon characters]]

* CanonForeigner: All of them, given they only appear in the fan-fiction stories.

!!A.K. Yearling

* TheGhost: Mentioned as being a teacher at Canterlot University in ''Nightmares Yet to Come'', but she doesn't appear because she's absent, for some [[AdventureArchaeologist mysterious reason]]. Meanwhile, the canon "The 'Ling from Another World" mentions that Daring Do books certainly exist in the Lunaverse. No word on who's writing them, though.
* PresentAbsence: Her lengthy disappearances result in Falling Star meeting Midnight. Had she actually been at work for once, they probably wouldn't have met at all.

!!Abacus Cinch

* DeathGlare: Trixie's foremost memory of the mare is her staring at Trixie like she was something an animal had dragged in.
* TheDreaded: It's implied she was particularly nasty to the castle staff. Mention is made of workplace bullying, but no specification on whether she was the one doing, or just encouraging. Merry Melody panics at the mere ''thought'' of her being able to return. Trixie shudders when she remembers the mare.
* TheGhost: Mentioned once or twice in ''Nightmares Yet to Come'', having previously been in Luna's employ some years prior.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Princess Luna found out about her misconduct, and she was "asked" to resign.

!!Bitter Orange

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

Earth mare pony from Manehatten

* TheConspiracy: She's one of the not-cultists who attacked Trixie.
* OddFriendship: Seems to have one with Sunset Shimmer and Lightning Dust, describing them as her "drinking buddies".
* OneSteveLimit: There was another Bitter Orange in another Lunaverse story, ''An Early Reunion''. Given that one was A: Male, and B: A storekeeper in Canterlot a thousand years ago, they're probably not the same pony. A later chapter reveals her full name is Bitter Orange Squash.

!!Falling Star

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

A pony from Canterlot, attacked by Tirek cultists. Daughter of Morning Star.

* BadassNormal: She's a regular student at Luna's academy, and yet still manages to evade a group of cultists for four years, to the extent they have no idea where she's gotten to.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Being subject to MindRape by a cult, only being saved by the apparent sacrifice of the pony who led her into a trap, and having to go on the run does that to a pony.]]
* SkewedPriorities: She tries to break into A.K. Yearling's office just so she can get some coursework marked.

!!Frolic Flame

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

Unicorn from Canterlot. Doesn't like his name.

* EmbarrassingFirstName: He ''really'' doesn't like his name and keeps trying to change it (though judging from his attempted renames, it's "Frolic" that bothers him).
* OneSteveLimit: At one point, he tried changing his name to Firelock, but he doesn't have any relationship to the Firelock of Ponyville.

!!Grey Hoof

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Dinky and the Blanks''

A supposedly charming party planner from the hidden town of Moonville

* ItsAllAboutMe: [[spoiler:Ultimately, all of Grey Hoof's motivations come down entirely to himself, to the extent he even states the ponies of his town are just meant to do what he wants and nothing more.]]
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Even after everypony else in the town acknowledges what they did was wrong, Grey Hoof refuses and runs off. As Raindrops notes, though, he's at large with no money, no power, and no skills besides party planning.]]
* LargeAndInCharge: He's the leader of Moonville's ponies, and is noted to be bigger than they are.
* ManipulativeBastard: Though Dinky's too young to realise it at first, everything he does is designed to make sure she stays in the town. Even once she does cotton on, she still has a hard time counter-arguing him.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: [[spoiler:In his true, Kelpie form.]]
* ShutUpHannibal: Trixie shuts down his attempt at a SherlockScan, pointing out anyone can tell Ditzy's got strabismus, or Carrot Top's a farmer, or Lyra's a musician.
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:Not to mention kill them, just for having a cutie mark.]]

!!Indigo Zap

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

* TheConspiracy: [[spoiler:Part of a group of ponies who attacked Trixie and Twilight as part of their vague but sinister plan.]]
* GogglesDoNothing: Mentioned as wearing a pair she tends to fidget with.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Along with another member of the group she's with, inflicts one on [[spoiler:Greengrass.]] Apparently she has issues with nobility.

!!Lightning Dust

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

* AmbiguouslyGay: And it's only ambiguous because NYTC all but outright ''says'' she and Sunset are in a relationship.
* NoodleIncident: According to "For the Mare Who Has Everything", Lightning, Sunset and Solar Flare have had a run-in at some point.
* SuperSpeed: [[spoiler:Manages to pull off a sonic lightning-boom getting Sunset Shimmer away from a slightly botched museum job.]]
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Sunset Shimmer.

!!Merry Melody

A worker at Canterlot Castle. Earth pony.

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:Initially appears to be just a mild mannered secretary. Then it turns out she's one of the not-a-cult too. That said, she seems legitimately upset when one of their number is wounded in action.]]

!!Midnight

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

Unicorn in the employ of Princess Luna, former "friend" of Trixie's

* AlliterativeName: Her second name begins with an "m".
* BarrierWarrior: She can generate forcefields, though she admits she's nowhere near Shining Armor's level. They're only good for two or three hits at most.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:Implied to be under some kind of mind control, kept in check with magic.]]
* CannotTellAJoke: Deadpan sarcasm, perhaps. Actual attempts at humor fall flat, due to a lack of knowing when is a good time.
* CharacterTic: Frequently mentions she has headaches, which ''might'' have something to do with [[spoiler:aforementioned mind control.]]
* DarkSecret: [[spoiler:There's something about her TheConspiracy doesn't want Trixie to know about. Something beginning with "ch-".]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Finishes off a formal report of the night's activity to Luna by pointing out that Corona has not overthrown her.
* DefrostingIceQueen: [[spoiler:Subverted, in Falling Star's flashback. After a few months with her, it looks like Midnight is slightly relaxing... only for her to lure Star into an isolated area with the not-a-cult. Although what happens next suggests there might have been some genuine feelings for Star in there.]]
* DrinkBasedCharacterization: She does not drink... alcohol. As she explains to Trixie, she doesn't want to see what she's like uninhibited. Neither does Trixie, for that matter (she figures it'd either be really funny or the complete opposite). What Trixie had assumed (from being in Berry's bar) was booze was actually just soda.
* EmotionlessGirl: Midnight seems aloof, rarely reacting with anything more than disinterest (or scorn). The closest to a public display of emotion is protesting an edict of Luna's.
* EnigmaticMinion: Hoo boy. [[spoiler:While the fact she's definitely not nice is certain, everything else about her is... much less clear. She's not shown attending meetings of the not-cult, who talk about her in the third person, and while in private she does seem to be working for them, exactly where she sits on their hierarchy isn't certain. Then there's the flashback with Falling Star to take into account. Not helped by every scene showing her behaviour through the eyes of others, rather than from her own P.O.V.]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: [[spoiler:Seems appalled by what was done to some random ponies by some of Tirek's handiwork.]]
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: After hearing Thesis say she looks like Twilight Sparkle, she goes and changes it the next day. [[spoiler:Though oddly, the description of keeping it in a bun sounds a little like ''Equestria Girls'' Twilight Sparkle's do instead.]]
* FightingFromTheInside: [[spoiler:When Falling Star is being subject to MindRape, something happens that makes Midnight start fighting off the other cultists, so Falling can get to safety.]]
* FirstNameBasis: No-one ever calls her by her second name. In fact, if it weren't for a single, easily missed line in one chapter, you could easily assume Midnight is her only name.
* GiverOfLameNames: By her own admission, she's no good at coming up with names. Hence, why she's called "Midnight".
* HeyYou: Instances of her referring to Thesis as Thesis when face-to-face are rare. Mostly she just calls her "little one".
* HiddenDepths: Turns out she can sing pretty well, when left alone. [[spoiler:And from the sound of it, it's "Shake Your Tail"... hmm.]]
* HypercompetentSidekick: Apparently serves as one to Luna, frequently dealing with all manner of paperwork (which Luna ''really'' doesn't like).
* InsistentTerminology: Dubs herself Thesis' sister, despite their having no biological relation to one another.
* {{Jerkass}}: Midnight is rude and / or aloof to just about everyone she meets. [[spoiler:And that's ''before'' she rigs up a way of legally taking a child. Not to mention she's a member of a cult that attacked Trixie.]]
* LastNameBasis: Only ever refers to Trixie as Lulamoon, even though Trixie hates it (apparently Trixie long ago gave up trying to correct this). Later interactions with other ponies show it's not just exclusive to her. Near everyone gets referred to by their last name (unless they have only one name).
* LudicrousPrecision: She can quote how long it's been since she and Trixie last met to the day. Averted later on, when she's unable to recall how long she and Trixie have known one another.
* MarriedToTheJob: Implied. Her place of residence is a tiny apartment in the servant's quarters with absolutely nothing in the way of personal touches. A later chapter has her confirm she's shrugged off pretty much everything for the sake of her career. [[spoiler:Until Thesis comes along.]]
* MaskOfSanity: [[spoiler:She has an adverse reaction to a senses-screwing spell which she previously stated didn't have adverse effects on regular minds, beyond knocking them out or giving them nasty headaches. "Adverse" here having the meaning of "goes into a berserk rage".]]
* MeaningfulName: ''Maybe.'' [[spoiler:Tirek's castle was called Midnight, something Falling Star notes. And Midnight did state she ''chose'' to call herself such, raising a few questions.]]
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** It's hinted she's picked up some nerdy tendencies from Shining Armor, casually dropping an RPG term in conversation, before realizing what she said and blaming him.
** When Trixie says she gets randomly attacked by crazy ponies all the time, she's too distracted to hear Midnight muttering how she's lucky under her breath.
* NotSoStoic:
** [[spoiler:When on her own, and during the incident with Falling Star, she shows she ''is'' capable of showing emotion. Also, on her return to Ponyville, she's evidently massively shaken and unsure. "Evidently" because whether she's being honest is kind of suspect. However, when alone with Spell Nexus, she shows some very ''definite'' irritation about getting kicked in the face.]]
** Her explanation for her claiming she was an agent of Tirek who's travelled back in time, after Trixie's incredulous response? "I panicked." Note that during this, her expression and demeanour don't change in the slightest.
** After getting a spell to the face, she mentions she's spent most of the last eight years Trixie has known her trying everything to keep a lid on her feelings. [[spoiler:Then she admits that momentarily losing her mind to a berserk rage felt ''good''...]]
** At one point, Thesis wakes up to find her singing while making breakfast. She's then startled to realize Thesis can see this. Later on in the chapter, she gets snippy with Ditzy and Twilight Sparkle.
* OddFriendship:
** Not even Trixie seems sure as to how they were friends. The closest explanation given is she just followed Trixie around and never went away. When asked, she states that Trixie is the closest thing she has to a friend.
** Also hinted to have one with Shining Armor. Her only possession is a book he gave her, and she once went to the Grand Galloping Gala with him (though she insists she was just being a bodyguard).
* PetTheDog: While her reasons for doing so probably ''aren't'' wholly benevolent, she does help Thesis get a handle on her telekinesis.
* RefugeInAudacity: Claims she was making up being an agent of Tirek's who time travelled to mess with Trixie. [[spoiler:There's a hint that some of it ''might'' actually be true.]]
* RememberTheNewGuy: Supposedly a former associate of Trixie's, and an incredibly prominent underling of Luna's.
* SpockSpeak: Speaks in a very formal, verbose fashion, even when talking to foals. [[spoiler:Though when she's on her own, it vanishes, suggesting it's an affectation.]]
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Her eye colour is implied to be naturally here, [[spoiler:but like all the members of the not-cult, they glow orange when she's up to no good.]]
* {{Teleportation}}: Her introduction has her teleporting into Trixie's residence, with another pony. Later chapters show that teleporting is one of her natural abilities, but [[spoiler:the not-cult have teleportation beacons similar to the ones Twilight and Trixie set up in "Voice of the Sun".]]
* TheyLookJustLikeEveryoneElse: As with the other not-cultists, when around other ponies she just looks like anyone else. However, there are a few instances of ponies getting odd feelings from her... only to immediately brush it off.

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Don't Go By the River''

Neigh Orleans necromancer

* BigBad: Of ''Don't Go By the River''.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He loves his mom, and is determined to do ''anything'' to bring her back, even as her ghost is telling him to stop trying.
* ItsPersonal: In his own, demented mind, that is. Luna telling him she wasn't going to bring his mother back is a serious affront to him, and makes him challenge her directly.
* KillAndReplace: Part of his plot is taking the Element Bearers out, and then taking their place. Hey, he may not like Luna, but he doesn't want Corona in charge.
* OneWingedAngel: Absorbs the power of the evil diamond he's using, which ends up backfiring on him.

!!Ruby

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Dinky and the Blanks''

A ghostly pony inhabiting the Everfree, who meets and strikes up a friendship with Dinky

* CheerfulChild: Despite having been dead for two hundred years, [[spoiler:courtesy of her friends and family.]]
* ThatCameOutWrong: She says she thinks Dinky'd make a good ghost, then has to add she didn't mean she thought Dinky should ''die''.

!!Spell Nexus

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

A professor at Luna's Academy, and former teacher of Twilight Sparkle

* AffablyEvil: [[spoiler:When dealing with Midnight, at least, sarcasm aside he does seem genuinely concerned about her health, suggesting she get some rest. Similarly with Cloud Kicker, but with slightly less sarcasm.]]
* BenevolentBoss: [[spoiler:Gives his underlings time off for Hearth's Warming. No evil over the holidays, apparently. But only until the new year.]]
* BigBad: [[spoiler:The leader of the not-a-cult who abduct Trixie and Twilight.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He initially seems like a good natured, if slightly not-all-there professor. [[spoiler:He's also the head of a group of villains up to seriously bad (if, admittedly, incredibly vague) things.]]
* CanonImmigrant: As a MythologyGag to the fic the story that he appears in is loosely based on.
* DeadpanSnarker: [[spoiler:While performing a medical check-up of Midnight, he asks her if she's displaying symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or the urge to cackle insanely and conquer Equestria.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:Being the operative devil in this case. Cloud Kicker at least is working for him, in return for which he gets rid of Rainbow Dash for her. Whether Kicker actually still wants it or not, it seems. Nexus is very intent on fulfilling his end of the bargain, even though at the same time he's dragging his hooves.]]
* AFatherToHisMen: [[spoiler:Of the evil variety. It's mentioned that the only thing keeping Rainbow Dash from angry visits in the night because of her quarrels with Cloud Kicker is because Nexus agreed not to hurt her. He also gives her some romantic advice, and apparently has tried doing so before.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: [[spoiler:Alternates between complimenting Greengrass and insulting him, after the guy's been beaten up and his stuff's being destroyed. Then Greengrass recognises him and the mask slips entirely.]]
* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler:When the deal with Cloud Kicker was being made, she asked him not to hurt anypony. Evidently, he takes that quite seriously, even though it severely hampers his attempts to fulfill his bargain.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: He's capable of keeping illusion spells going that are enough to fool Trixie, who is herself an expert on illusion magic.
* NotThatKindOfDoctor: Freely admits he's not a doctor when [[spoiler:giving Midnight a check-up.]]
* SuddenlyShouting: Goes from calmly asking [[spoiler:Cloud Kicker]] to look at him then bellowing, before apologizing for it.

!!Sunset Shimmer

-->'''Appears in:''' ''A Shimmering Sunset'', ''Don't Go By the River'', ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

* AllTheOtherReindeer: DGBR!Sunset is a little tetchy about her Cutie Mark, and ponies assuming what it means about her, in an Equestria that's suspicious of the sun and sun-based marks.
* BenevolentBoss: DGBR!Sunset kept Crystal Gaze on at the Neigh Orleans library after her horn broke, even though everypony else suggested otherwise. Crystal Gaze repaid this by stealing from the library.
* TheGhost: Finally gets a mention in a cannon fic with "For The Mare Who Has Everything", but doesn't make a flesh and blood appearance.
* InTheHood: She's introduced in ''Nightmares Yet to Come'' keeping a hood and cloak on indoors in a diner (possibly for reasons related to aforementioned sun Cutie Mark).
* LightEmUp: One of her talents.
* LightIsGood: DGBR!Sunset is grumpy, but a good pony, who helps the Element Bearers foil Night Shade's plot. NYTC!Sunset... not as such (while not ''evil'', or at least not malicious, she's perfectly willing to commit burglary, even if it is for probably noble reasons).
* PlayingWithFire: The other side of her Cutie Mark talents, according to ''Don't Go By the River''.
* {{Teleportation}}: One of her skills.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Her and Lightning Dust have this dynamic in NYTC, with Sunset calling the shots.
* WithCatlikeTread: She even sings part of the original song while trying to ''break into a museum''. Lightning Dust's reaction suggests she's done this before.

!!Thesis

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

A filly with connections to both Trixie and Twilight Sparkle.

* ApologizesALot
* BizarreTasteInFood: Seems to have inherited Trixie's unusual tastes, not being remotely interested in a soup until someone adds a nice dash of mustard.
* BreakTheCutie: Her treatment by Midnight has begun to give her some burgeoning abandonment issues.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: While at first there's some suspicion she could be Antithesis reborn, she quickly turns out to be an ordinary (relatively speaking) foal, with no hidden malevolence of any kind. In fact, possibly too innocent, since she's unable to notice how her supposed guardian is very sketchy.
* ConstantlyCurious: Once she gets over her shyness, she begins asking Trixie dozens of questions.
* CreatingLifeIsUnforeseen: The not-a-cult behind the attack on Trixie and Twilight hadn't been trying to create an alicorn. It just sort of happened after a ''very'' angry Luna crashed their party.
* {{Expy}}: Fills the role of "Nightmares Yet to Come"'s Nyx counterpart.
* MeaningfulName: [[spoiler:Since she seems to be a smaller, non-evil version of Antithesis, she was given the name "Thesis", if only because nopony in the room could agree on a better name.]]
* MoodSwinger: At one point goes from refusing to eat a meal to smashing a table in a sudden burst of anger, then straight to fear. In fairness, she is just a child.
* PowerIncontinence: Her first attempt to lift just an apple caused some mayhem. Namely, the apple is squished, and then the ground beneath it gets torn up. It's suggested that it's basically Dinky's issue with magic (over-focusing her grip) amplified due to Thesis' apparent status as an alicorn.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Is the same mixed blue-purple as Antithesis, and she's an alicorn. When Trixie takes a look at her magical aura in an early chapter of the story, rather than being the gold of an alicorn, her magic is more of a purple colour.
* WhoNamesTheirKidDude: Eventually she comes to the conclusion she doesn't like her name.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's got an irrational fear of too much cheese. Which means quesadillas are off the menu.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:Looks like a foal, despite being no more than a month old. Hilarity ensues when she tries explaining her "birth" to the other foals of Ponyville.]]

!!Wedge Hurricane

-->'''Appears in:''' ''Nightmares Yet to Come''

* TheGhost: Never appears, or at least isn't identified, [[spoiler:before his being wounded by Luna breaking up the not-a-cult's ritual.]] But he is discussed by the other characters.
* TheQuietOne: Apparently didn't say very much, and what he did say was about hurricanes.
* {{Redshirt}}: The first, and so far apparently only identified member of the cult to go down. Actually gets explored when it turns out none of the other cultists knew much about him.
