->''"So... Fortune has smiled upon me this day. With the power of this gauntlet... I will destroy all of those monsters and save the princess!"''

\
The main hero of the ''Onimusha'' series, he's a samurai and Onimusha, a warrior with the powers of the Oni clan. In the first game his mission is to rescue Princess Yuki from the clutches of the Genma and stop their evil plot of conquest with the help of the Oni Gauntlet. After Fortinbras' defeat, he disappeared, only to return in ''3'', where he attacks Nobunaga at Honnoji but a mysterious time travel is involved and he's projected into Paris, 2004 and must fight his way back to the past. After Nobunaga's defeat, he started a journey to seal away the Oni Gauntlet containing the Genma Lord's Soul. [[spoiler:He appears as Tenkai Nankobo in ''Dawn of Dreams'']]
----
* BodyHorror: It's hard to see, but his right arm, looks very deformed and scarred from being fused with the Oni Gauntlet, [[spoiler:thankfully he manages to remove and heal it before he became Tenkai]].
* BowAndSwordInAccord: His ranged weapon is a longbow, equipped in ''3'' with elemental arrows.
* TheChosenOne: For the Oni clan, as the bearer of the Oni Gauntlet. Demoted in ''Onimusha Soul'' where pretty much [[TheChosenMany everyone on the Oni side gets a Gauntlet for free]].
* CoolSword: Many of them, including the saber Raizan, the giant broadsword Enryuu, the dual wakizashi Tenso and the extra-long Kuuga, and this is without going into his series of ultimate swords such as Bishamonken or [[spoiler:Genma Samonji]].
* CulturedBadass: A brave warrior capable of bisecting demons with ease, Samanosuke is also very wise and knowledgeable, and can speak multiple idioms thanks to his journeys on the Asian continent.
* DiscardAndDraw: When he is sent to the future at the beginning of ''3'', he loses his weapons he had in ''1'', but gains new ones in their place. By running the [[BonusDungeon Dark Realms]], you can eventually gain back the Raizan, Enryuu, and Shippuu, already conveniently at max strength.
* DoubleWeapon: His Shippuu naginata has blades on both ends.
* TheDreaded: Judging from a document found in the third game, most of the Genma are now terrified of him since he slew Gargant, their mightiest warrior.
* DualWielding: When using [[LightEmUp Tenso]] in ''3''.
* ElementalPowers:
** For the first game, he wields the [[ShockAndAwe Raizan]], [[PlayingWithFire Enryuu]], and the [[BlowYouAway Shippuu]].
** In the third game, he gets the [[LightEmUp Tenso]], [[RazorWind Kuuga]], and [[DishingOutDirt Chigo]]. All three weapons from the first game are unlockable via the Dark Realms. Plus, he can have Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Soul Arrows as well.
* EleventhHourSuperpower: [[spoiler:The Onimusha Sword and the purified Genma Samonji in ''3''.]]
* FusionDance: [[spoiler:Towards the end of ''Demon Siege'', future!Samanosuke returns to his timeline, and [[NeverTheSelvesShallMeet fuses with the dying past!Samanosuke]] in order to become more powerful and defeat Nobunaga once and for all.]]
* TheHero: The biggest one of the games so far, featuring in all except for ''2''.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Most of his Oni Weapons are swords of various forms, the sole exceptions being Shippu, a DoubleWeapon, and Chigo, which is an axe.
* HistoricalBadassUpgrade: Hidemitsu, aside of his loyalty to Mitsuhide, was particularly 'nothing special' in terms of fame in the Sengoku Period, as there are more famous generals such as Sanada Yukimura. Samanosuke, on the other hand, is a badass [[TheParagon paragon]] of righteousness whose combat prowess could probably give Yukimura a run for his money.
* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: Based on Hidemitsu Akechi (the son-in-law of the famous [[UsefulNotes/AkechiMitsuhide Mitsuhide]]) and severely upgraded.
* ImportantHaircut: Subverted, as it's not so much a new haircut as it is a different hairstyle. In Demon Siege, the Samanosuke of the past wears his hair in a ponytail, while his future self wears his hair loose and down.
* InkSuitActor: His appearance is based on his voice actor, Takeshi Kaneshiro.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: The Bishamon Sword in the first game, [[spoiler:the Onimusha Sword and the purified Genma Samonji in the third]].
* MultiMeleeMaster: A MasterSwordsman with swords of all sizes, capable of DualWielding, using a bow and also spears and axes. [[spoiler:By the time of ''Shin Onimusha'', his skills with spearmanship has further increased.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's in his 40s in ''Onimusha 3'', but still looks as though he's in his 20s — this is due to the fact that [[AllThereInTheManual his Oni powers prevent him from aging]].
* OneManArmy: And we're talking about an army of ''demons''.
* PetTheDog: When he comforts Henri in ''3'' while they're held captive by Guildenstern.
* PrimaryColorChampion: The official color of the Akechi clan is fire engine red.
* RedBaron: In case you couldn't tell from the above mentioned trope, he's mentioned as the "Red Onimusha" in ''Dawn of Dreams''.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Offscreen, when he discovers that Gargant has killed [[spoiler:Kaede]].
* {{Samurai}}: He's no slouch as a {{Ninja}} either, as shown in the intro of the third game.
%%* ShipTease: With Kaede.
* TheStoic: Though not to the extent of Jubei, he's still reserved and quiet in ''3''.
* SuperMode: The Onimusha mode gives him a large BattleAura, purple skin, white hair, and horns.
* WalkingTheEarth: He traveled across Japan and Asia, and that was before the events of the first game to boot.

[[folder:Kaede]]
!!Kaede
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Nao Takamori (JP - Mocap, Voice), Ayumi Iizuka (EN - ''Warlords''), Creator/JenniferHale (EN - ''Blade Warriors'')

->''"Something seems to be going on..."''

\
Kaede is a young kunoichi from the Iga Clan. She was sent to kill Samanosuke for an unknown reason, but ends up joining him as a faithful companion and possible love interest. [[spoiler:[[AllThereInTheManual It is later revealed in auxiliary material]] that she was killed by the Genma General Gargant and avenged by Samanosuke]].
----
* ActionGirl: She's a capable kunoichi who, in spite of not being an Onimusha, can kill demons on her own.
* DeviousDaggers: Matching her backstory of having originally been sent to kill Samanosuke, her main weapons are daggers. Since she's since joined her target as a companion, the "devious" part of the trope is dropped.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:She's killed offscreen by Gargant sometime between ''Warlords'' and ''Demon Siege'', with nary a scene dedicated to her after the fact.]]
* FanservicePack: In ''Onimusha Soul'', she's cuter and her breasts are noticeably bigger.
* FragileSpeedster: She's a lot more fragile than Samanosuke and doesn't hit as hard, but is very quick. That is, until she gets her upgraded dagger, at which point she's more of a GlassCannon.
* HeelFaceTurn: Forms part of her backstory, as she chose to travel with Samanosuke rather than kill him.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Considering she wears orange and black in a mostly dark and dim-lit castle… though it's partly justified as her opponents are Genma.
* InkSuitActor: Like Samanosuke, she's based on her voice actress.
* KilledOffForReal: She dies offscreen, sometime before ''Demon Siege'', at the hands of Gargant.
* TheLancer: To Samanosuke.
* {{Ninja}}: She's one from the Iga clan. Originally tasked with the murder of Samanosuke, she fell in love with him and helped him.
* ShipTease: With Samanosuke.

->''"Come! I shall fight you!"''

\
A young orphan adopted by princess Yuki who gets kidnapped when he tries to save her. He's met 12 years later in ''Blade Warriors'' where he's known as a powerful and kind warrior who fights alongside Kaede and Samanosuke.
----
* TheBigGuy: Grows up into one as Keiji, including wielding one of the largest weapons the series has to offer.
* BrattyHalfPint: Starts off as such due to growing up in a castle, pretty much sheltered. The initial Genma invasion and growing into a warrior made him drop it as time went on.
* CaptainErsatz: He looks very similar to ''VideoGame/SengokuBasara'''s Keiji. Considering that both titles are from Capcom...
* GentleGiant: Despite looking large and powerful, he's very kind. Usual depictions of Toshimasu seem to emphasize his sheer height and width.
* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: Based off the historical [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maeda_Toshimasu Maeda Toshimasu]], a kabukimono (samurai gangster) and Nobunaga's nephew, who grew to oppose his uncle after losing the right to his inheritance.
* InkSuitActor: At least in Warlords.
* ParentalAbandonment: He was adopted by Yuki.
* TookALevelInBadass: Compare his younger self in ''Warlords'' with Keiji years later, where he's now a talented warrior, if still a boastful one.

[[folder:Jubei Sekishusai Yagyu]]
!!Jubei Sekishusai Yagyu
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Yagyu1_5629.jpg]]

The main character of the second game and initially referred to as Jubei Yagyu (not the historical UsefulNotes/YagyuJubei, but rather his grandfather; here Jubei is the name given to the strongest youth in the village), he finds out that his village has been destroyed by the wicked Genma Lord Nobunaga. Armed with his newfound Oni powers and with powerful allies on his side, he start a quest to stop the evil Demon King. [[spoiler:He eventually managed to kill Nobunaga, but he can't stop his soul from coming back again later and is eventually forced to go into hiding during ''Demon Siege''.]] He's mentioned in ''Dawn of Dreams'' where its revealed that his true name is Sekishusai.
----
* BadassBoast: When Ginghamphatts asks him if he thinks he's better than someone from the Genma Clan, he retorts that he's even better.
* BadAssLongcoat: Very well-decorated.
* DeadpanSnarker: Again, he manages to be surprisingly snarky at his foes from time to time.
* DullSurprise: Infamous in the english dub for his lack of reactions and emotions during the delivery of most sentences.
* ElementalPowers: Like Samanosuke, each of his weapon emits a certain elemental magic: the [[ShockAndAwe Buraitou]], [[AnIcePerson Hyoujin Yari]], [[BlowYouAway Senpuumaru]], [[DishingOutDirt Dokotsui]], and [[KillItWithFire Rekka-Ken]].
* HalfHumanHybrid: He's half-human, half-Oni.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Rekka-Ken, the sword of fire. In ''Blade Warriors'', he gets to handle Excalibur instead.
* InformedAbility: His skills as a swordsman are unknown, as he has very few sword-like weapons.
%%* InkSuitActor: Again.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Jubei is a MasterSwordsman, but his mastery of Oni Weapons shows that he's actually a samurai well-versed in many forms of armed combat: he can wield piercing and slashing polearms, larger swords, and even huge hammers.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:When he kills Gogandantess and agrees to comply his final wish.]]
* PowerGlows: The Oni Mark on his left hand, which enables him to obtain weapons from the Dragon Sanctuaries.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Against Nobunaga, for slaying the Yagyu Clan.
%%* {{Samurai}}
* SpectacularSpinning: When wielding Senpumaru, whose standard and special attacks involve a lot fo twirling and spinning, and when using Dokotsui's special attack.
* StarCrossedLovers: Him and Oyu[[spoiler:/Oichi]].
* TheStoic: Much more than Samanosuke.
* SuperMode: He can turn into an Onimusha after absorbing five purple souls. [[spoiler:During his final battle, it comes complete with ArmCannon.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Oyu of Odani]]
!!Oyu of Odani[[spoiler:/Oichi Oda]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Oyu1_9700.jpg]]

A mysterious swordswoman who sports Western armor and is seen around the Genma hideouts in Gifu Castle whose path crosses with Jubei. [[spoiler:She's actually Oichi, Nobunaga's sister, who's attempting to defend Odani castle from her brother's armies of monsters. She's also in love with Jūbei, but nothing really happens between them.]]
----
* ActionGirl: Aside from a few moments of CutsceneIncompetence when not playable, she's more than capable of slaying Genma left and right.
%%* AllLoveIsUnrequited: With Jūbei.
* ArrangedMarriage: [[spoiler:She was married off to Nagamasa Azai, and according to her it's a unhappy one.]]
* {{Chickification}}: She starts the game off as a fairly strong and capable woman and is more than capable of kicking demon ass (when player-controlled, at least), but quickly turns into someone who is easily overpowered, has to be rescued a lot by Jubei (and even by [[spoiler:Gogandantess]] on one occasion), and who falls over a lot.
* CleavageWindow: Her armor has a gap in her chest to expose her cleavage.
* CoolSword: A western broadsword, she later equips an Indian rapier and a massive gladius.
* CutsceneIncompetence: Despite being capable of kicking asses, she's often [[DamselInDistress seen endangered]] by [[SmugSnake Tokichiro]], an extremely short man who seems like he'd never pose a physical threat to anyone. As well as during many other non-Tokichiro-related incidents.
%%* DistressedDamsel
* DisneyDeath: Seemingly falls to her death from the Oni Genbu after the collision with Gifu Castle, but later turns out alive, with [[UnexplainedRecovery no explanation whatsoever]].
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:In ''Dawn of Dreams'', Ohatsu reveals that she killed herself after hearing of Katsuie's defeat at the hands of Hideyoshi in order to [[DefiantToTheEnd not fall into his hands.]]]]
* DudeMagnet: Jūbei first sees her fending off several suitors while in Imasho and is the LustObject of Tokichiro.
* GoodStepmother: [[spoiler:She claims she has three daughters at home, but they're actually her husband's daughters with his previous wife. But while she disliked the situation at first, she came to accept the girls as her daughters.]]
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler:Nobunaga is her brother who put her into an ArrangedMarriage for political reasons, then turned around and menaced the clan she had married into, including the daughters of the man she married, who Oyu came to feel protective of.]]
* KnightlySwordAndShield: She wields a European sword and shield as her weapons.
* LongingLook: Towards Jubei, several times.
* MsFanservice: Her outfit has a CleavageWindow and her "secret" outfit has a NavelDeepNeckline. Her section in the opening FMV is a gratuitous ShowerScene under a [[WaterfallShower waterfall]] with MaleGaze shots of her ToplessnessFromTheBack, {{Sideboob}} and ShouldersUpNudity.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Her secret "joke" outfit is a fur jacket with a plunging neckline that goes down to her waist.
* OrbitalKiss / LastKiss: With Jubei, if her goodwill towards him is high enough.
* StarCrossedLovers: She falls in love with Jubei during the journey, but circumstances force them apart.
* TomboyishPonytail: Her hair is actually long, but she keeps it tied to a short ponytail while dressed for battle.

[[folder:Ekei Ankokuji]]
!!Ekei Ankokuji
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Ekei1_1561.jpg]]

A fat and jolly warrior monk who enjoys liquor and women and food. He's Magoichi's rival and has a past as warlord. He fights the Genma with his trusty Hozoin Spear.
----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: His spear can cut a bottle neatly in half by flying over it.
* BigEater: "Good food is one of my weaknesses!"
* BigFun: Although he does have a darker side.
%%* BoisterousBruiser
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:The deaths of his family left a mark on him deep down.]]
* DoesntLikeGuns: He refers to Magoichi as a "coward" for using firearms. Magoichi accuses him of being "too old-fashioned".
* DrowningMySorrows: It's implied that part of the reason he's ''such'' a big drinker is because it's his way of dealing with his past.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:If your score of friendship with him is minimal, he'll decide to take a job with Nobunaga.]]
%%* LovableSexManiac
* MyGreatestFailure: He couldn't save his wife or his baby daughter Numa from his burning castle, and [[HeroicBSOD he freaks out]] when he comes across a crying baby in Gifu Castle.
%%* NunTooHoly: Ok, he's a warrior-monk, but still…
%%* RedOniBlueOni: Red Oni to Magoichi.
%%* TheRival: To Magoichi.
* SadClown: Boisterous, jovial, womanazing and affable, he actually still suffers from [[spoiler:the deaths of his wife and daughter]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Magoichi. Although odds are neither one of them appreciate you calling them best buds, or even friends.
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be Mice?]]: Though unlike most instances, seeing a mouse doesn't paralyze him with fear — it makes him unleash a ''monumental'' can of whoop-ass on some nearby Genma, as they're blocking the only passage out of the room (and away from the mouse).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Magoichi Saiga]]
!!Magoichi Saiga
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Saiga1_1106.jpg]]

The leader of the Saiga Musket Team and a fine marksman, he's a quiet, intelligent warrior who loves to read books.
----
* BadassBookworm: He loves books, especially about history and strategy.
* {{BFG}}: His Goraishinki and Flamethrower weapons.
* DeadpanSnarker: Especially when Ekei is involved.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Working for Nobunaga pays the bills. However, when the Genma indiscriminately target Magoichi's ''home village'', even this hardened merc realizes that Nobunaga must be stopped.
* DoomedHometown: Magoichi is trying to avert this.
* GeniusBruiser: A powerful fighter who also enjoys reading books and crafting new inventions.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: He nailed a moth to a wooden beam without even looking in order to scare Ekei off.
* KillItWithFire: The Flamethrower. Just walk while the enemies in front of you are set ablaze by a stream of hot fiery death.
* TheMusketeer: He mostly uses his musket, but that doesn't mean he's vulnerable in melee.
* OldMaster: To Ohatsu in the fourth game.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Averted when Nobunaga turns his sights on Magoichi's home village.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue Oni to Ekei.
* RebelRelaxation
* TheRival: To Ekei.
* SpikyHair: He styles his hair in this manner, to the point that oil that he can use to style his hair is one of the positive gift items you can give him.
* TallDarkandHandsome: Well, he's not exceptionally tall, but Magoichi is tan and handsome [[ProudBeauty and he knows it]]. Judging by the way he's often checking his his looks and responds positively to gifts that have to do with his appearance, (such as mirrors and hair oil) he's more than a little vain.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Ekei. Although it's less best buds and more
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Sure, he does have a coat but nothing else under it on the chest, except maybe for a piece of armor.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kotaro Fuuma]]
!!Kotaro Fuuma
[[quoteright:176:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/onimushabladewarriors_031104__031104_0091_5547.jpg]]

The young leader of the Fuuma Clan serving the Hojo, he's a cheerful shinobi who helps Jubei on his journey. He's really curious about the surrounding world and is distrustful of women.
----
* CollectorOfTheStrange: He likes many "exotic" gifts, including a compass, a hat, a fable book and a crystal ball.
* CuteBruiser: Young and cute, has no trouble killing hordes of demons one by one.
* DualWielding: He wields ninja blades.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Due to his age, in this case.
* FragileSpeedster: He's the fastest playable character and the most nimble, but he's not very tough himself and is able to take less punishment than the other characters.
* FreudianExcuse: His dislike of women is due to his belief that his mother abandoned him.
* HeManWomanHater: Very diffident when it comes to women, especially Oyu. In this case, it's because of his MissingMom.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:How he's killed by Ginghamphatts, if he is Jubei's closest friend.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:If Jubei has a high friendship level with him, Kotaro saves Oyu from Ginghamphatts but gets impaled through the back.]]
* LightningBruiser: Faster than the other characters, he can jump over tall obstacles and cliffs while also making mincemeat out the Genma.
* {{Ninja}}: Unlike Kaede though he's an actual historical character.
* ParentalAbandonment: Especially a case of MissingMom.
* SadClown: He has a very cheerful and carefree attitude, scratching the surface reveals that he isn't nearly as carefree as he likes to pretend.

->''"I'll get home no matter what. There must be a way. I've just gotta find it."''

\
An active member of the General Directorate for External Security in Paris, and the second main character in ''Demon Siege''. When Paris is invaded by the Genma, he fights them alongside his fellow operatives, but as Samanosuke arrives, a mysterious energy dome sent him to Japan, five hundreds years in the past, where he's charged by the Oni Guardians with the task of slaying the Genma and helping Past Samanosuke on his way. Armed with a second Oni Gautlet and the Oni Whip, he fight his way to come back from the past and defeat the Genma.
----

* BadassBiker: Albeit briefly, he knows exactly how to use it to defeat enemies and make a large jump to a sailing ship.
* BadassLongcoat: Which he can upgrade, and works as well as Samanosuke's actual armor.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' harm those he cares about. Just… don't.
* TheChosenOne: He's the only other character besides Samanosuke who was entrusted with the Oni Gauntlet, and the first ''Western'' one at that. Of course, this was before ''Onimusha Soul''.
* DeadpanSnarker: He's much more snark-prone than Samanosuke and Jubei.
* DoubleWeapon: The Raisen is a double-ended spear with a blue shaft, though in this case the segmented shaft makes Jacques able to attack better with both ends.
* EpicFlail: His Hyosai mace. By the time it's fully powered up, the ball is nearly as big as his whole torso, and he has to drag the whole thing around.
* FireIceLightning: His Elemental Weapons in the game: Enja, Hyosai, and Raisen respectively.
* InkSuitActor: For Creator/JeanReno, though he only provides his voice in the French scenes, despite Reno originally being scheduled to voice the character in English as well.
* ItsPersonal: After [[spoiler:Henri is killed by Ranmaru (he gets better)]], Jacques beats [[spoiler:Ranmaru]] to death with his bare hands.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: At one point, while in Mount Saint Michel.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJOJJra5ZuI Pride ~ Jacques' Theme]]", an epic orchestra with a hopeful tone.
* TheMusketeer: He uses his gun as a sidearm to attack his whip-bound target or nail him with bullets as a coup-de-grace.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: How he kills Ranmaru [[spoiler:both in the past and in the present]].
* PapaWolf: Especially after the death of his wife before the events of the game. His biggest priority is his son Henri's protection.
* PowerFist: The Oni Gauntlet. [[spoiler:Which he uses to pommel Genma Ranmaru to death.]]
* PowerGlows: The "Rings" around said Gauntlet will change in color depending on the weapon currently equipped.
* WeaponSpecialization: Along with the Oni Gauntlet, he receives a Oni Whip which becomes his weapon of choice. All of his weapons have a whip motif, which he can use to bind enemies and reach certain places with Oni Fireflies.
* WhipSword: The Enja. He also acquires the Raisen, which is [[MixAndMatchWeapon a dual-bladed multi-sectioned spear with jagged blades]].

Jacques' fiancee and a high-ranking officer of the French Army who aids Samanosuke in his quest. She wishes to also earn the trust of Jacques' son Henri and keep him safe from the Genma attacking Paris.
----
* ActionGirl: Comes with being in the French Army, but she takes it up a notch by having only the bare-minimum access to Oni magic (that is, to say, a Soul Bracelet and nothing else).
* BadassNormal: Her only supernatural help is a bracelet which allows her to take the souls, but that's all there is. She'll kill any Genma in her way with her guns alone.
* {{BFG}}: Her GrenadeLauncher.
* FonzarelliFix: For the boat in the Boulogne Zoo.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Like Oyu, she's competent in gameplay, but she's easily overwhelmed twice in cutscenes. Then again, it's more forgivable than Oyu, as in the second occasion she's rammed by a beast the size of a rhino.
* TheGunslinger: The resident markswoman of the game. Her arsenal includes a standard-issue assault rifle, a Shotgun, a Precision Rifle and, lastly, a Grenade Launcher.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=347Oy5XJeRs Courage, Love and Ammunition ~ Michelle's Theme]]", a string orchestra with just as much of a hopeful tone as Jacques' theme.
* MamaBear: Towards Henri, despite his initial cold attitude towards her for being a stranger in his life.
* MsFanservice: Her secret costume is a tiny ModestyTowel. And her normal outfit still sports some generous cleavage.
* StandardFemaleGrabArea: Variation, Guildenstern grabs her in the back of the neck while she's distracted in a cutscene.

* AdaptationalWimp: In most adaptations of Sengoku-era Japan, Tadakatsu is considered the strongest warrior of his time, and survives into the Edo era. Here, he's only just as powerful as any other playable character [[spoiler:and is killed off before Hideyoshi's rise to power]].
* AlmostDeadGuy: [[spoiler:Found in this state by Jacques, still manages to tell him where to find Nobunaga.]]

* HeroOfAnotherStory: Avaible as a special mode after completing the game, which explains what he was doing in the Oni Temple.

->''"I control my own destiny… The path I walk is my choice alone!"''

\
The main Hero of ''Dawn of Dreams'', he's a powerful warrior clad in a blue armor that stands against the evil Hideyoshi and burns down the "Cherry Trees" (actually Genma Trees) which are gathered from all over Japan. He'll soon find himself allied with four other characters with great powers and work with them in order to stop the Genma and their plans for TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.

\
[[spoiler:He's actually the avatar of the Oni God of Darkness, destinated to slay Fortinbras at the cost of his own life.]] His true name is Hideyasu Yuki, and he's the bastard son of UsefulNotes/TokugawaIeyasu.
----
* {{BFS}}: His entire arsenal is composed of huge Broadswords, with varying levels of weight determining the combo lengths. His main weapon, Lamentation, is also one of these, as well as imbued with the power of darkness.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Minokichi and Jubei.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He may be known as the "Black Oni", a nickname that makes him sound like a monster, and his starting sword is imbued with the power of darkness, but he's a good guy. [[spoiler:A scroll found on Mount Hiei mentions that he risks to turn evil and destructive, but after recovering the Oni Orb, said risk is reduced.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Especially early on with Minokichi and Jubei, but he becomes less of a snarker when the gang is fully formed.
* DiagonalCut: How he deals [[CurbStompBattle with the Genma Colossus]] at the beginning.
* HeroicSacrifice / TheHeroDies: [[spoiler:As the avatar of the God of Darkness, his fate is to give his life in order to save millions in the final battle against the Genma God of Light, which he ultimately ends up doing.]]
* HistoricalBadassUpgrade: Yuki Hideyasu did become a daimyo on his own, but didn't gain any notoriety in battle during the UsefulNotes/SengokuPeriod. Soki, on the other hand, is a bonafide demon-slaying badass.
* HoldingBackThePhlebotinum: Implied to be the reason why he only gains his Onimusha transformation late in the game after dislpaying it in the intro: apparently he was holding back for Hideyoshi.
* HolyHandGrenade: His Requiem sword is a sword-shaped grenade. When used, it can purify the targeted enemy and release extra purple souls.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: The Gokumonji sword [[spoiler:used by Samanosuke to kill Nobunaga in ''3'']], found at the bottom of his Dark Realm run.
* ItsPersonal: Against his former liege [[spoiler:and foster father]] Hideyoshi, after his corruption by the Genma.
* ItWasAGift: His initial sword "Lamentation" was a gift from his mother before she [[MissingMom vanished mysteriously]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://youtu.be/zRjZsj1TOAk Soki's Theme]]", also called the "Blue Oni" theme, a heroic orchestra piece that sounds hopeful and energetic.
* LetsGetDangerous: As he quickly reminds Munenori:
-->'''Soki:''' ''"I forgot to tell you: [[IronicEcho I'm one enemy you don't wanna make]] ''either''."''
* ObliviousToLove: Jubei has an implied crush towards him, but Soki never seems to notice it himself.
* OhCrap: His reaction when Hideyoshi recovers from the battle, revealing that his Onimusha powers where not enough.
* OneManArmy: See the game's intro. It gives Samanosuke some fierce competition for this trope.
* PetTheDog: His tender moments towards Jubei, Ohatsu and Minokichi are a good example of this. Even in the intro cutscene, he destroys a huge number of Genma to save a child and even returns their ball once he's done.
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:He's the avatar of the God of Darkness, the Black Oni. As a result, he could be the most powerful being in existence, even stronger than the Onimusha.]]
* PowerGlows: The Requiem sword.
* RazorWind: A few of Soki's swords, including his InfinityPlusOneSword, can do this. This trait is actually shared by many of his fellow teammates sans Ohatsu.
* RedBaron: The "Oni of the Ash", earned for his reputation of burning down the Genma Trees. Later called by the proper title of "Black Oni".
* RedOniBlueOni: The color-swapped Red Oni to Tenkai, being cockier and more prone to snark.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Against Hideyoshi. It's the driving force behind his actions up until the climax.
* SayMyName: "'''HIIIIDEYOSHIIIIIIII!!!'''" (cue to SingleStrokeBattle)
* ShellShockedVeteran: He witnessed the horrors of the Korean campaign and the use of Genma insects on soldiers to make them unstoppable.
* SticksToTheBack: Requiem.
* ThatManIsDead: The main reason why he goes by the name of Soki. More noticeable against Ohatsu.
-->'''Ohatsu''': "I'll have to shoot you... ''[[SayMyName Hideyasu Yuki!!]]''
-->'''Soki''': "…[[TranquilFury I no longer go by that name…]]"
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Requiem, as part of his Sword of Purification technique.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He confesses to Jubei that he adores boiled [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colocasia_esculenta Taro]], and he'd eat nothing but that if it were for him. Jubei's not amused.
* TwentyFourHourArmor: A bulky blue set he's never seen without.

Sekishusai's granddaughter, the strongest swords[[strike:man]]woman in the Yagyu village. She's looking for her uncle Munenori in order to avenge the villagers he killed when he turned against the Yagyu. She ends up aiding Soki in his quest.

\
Jubei is small and light on her feet. She's able to cross narrow pathways and crawl through tight spaces to areas the others cannot reach. Her special command allow her to taunt enemies and distract them from attacking Soki.
----

* BadAssAdorable: A cute little girl who's carrying the current title of Jubei Yagyu of the Yagyu village, passed down from her grandfather.
* BerserkButton: Calling her "little" and treating her like a child. She also doesn't take well to people implying she should be more "feminine".
* BrattyHalfPint: At the beginning. She ultimately grows out of it as she sticks around with Soki.
* BreakTheCutie: Even before joining with Soki, she set out to kill her own uncle after he murdered several people from her home village, many of which being her friends and family. The rest of the game's plot serves to break what's left.
* CounterAttack: Her Quick Draw is, in short, this: upon taking her defensive stance, she counters any attack with a iaido attack.
* DiagonalCut: Often, mostly seen with her Quick Draw technique.
* EyepatchOfPower: [[spoiler:After the battle against Fortinbras, she takes to wearing a sword hilt as an eyepatch.]]
* HeroicBSOD: After being defeated and captured by Munenori in Kyoto. She snaps out of it when Soki and Ohatsu rescue her in the Azuchi Castle ruins.
* IShallTauntYou: As an ally, she can taunt enemies to draw attention away from Soki.
* InterfaceScrew: Her Awakening can actually do this to the player's benefit, as it will also slow down timers in Tests of Valor.
* ItsPersonal: Her vendetta against Munenori, especially the third and fourth boss battles with him, which are one-on-one duels against him.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Her crush on Soki ends in the final chapter, when she asks Ohatsu to take care of him, thinking she shouldn't have come between them.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: One of her combo styles even turns her into a IaijutsuPractitioner.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjQ7Dj5Xw7E Jubei Yagyu Red Theme]]", a traditional orchestra with an energetic beat and upbeat tone.
* PetitePride: Tells Soki point-blank she doesn't want a big chest in one of her Hideout conversations. [[DCupDistress It would only get in the way]].
* PintSizedPowerhouse: The smallest of all the playable characters, can still pack a punch.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: [[spoiler:Her last dialogue with Soki, as he's about to give his life to stop the Omen Star and Fortinbras once and for all.]]
* TimeMaster: Her "Awakening" allows her to use her Demon Eye to [[BulletTime slow down time]].
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: She's the Tomboy and Ohatsu the Girly Girl. Soki even thinks she should at least try to sound more "proper".
* {{Tsundere}}: Moreso in the game's first act, less so when she becomes more acquainted with the others and becomes more open about her emotions. That being said, she still plays this trope straight regarding her crush on Soki.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Seen with her combo of greaves and vest.

\
One of Hideyoshi's retainers, a musket-wielding woman and an old friend (and love interest) of Soki. Due to her fright of Hideyoshi's power and also because of the Genma Insects, she tries to persuade Soki to stop his rebellion against the Toyotomi and join them, but after he saves her, she chooses to side with him.

\
Ohatsu's specialties are firearms and explosives. She can unseal doors locked with Genma membranes and use her grappling tool to swing across gaps to areas normally inaccessible by any other means. Furthermore, she can snipe certain targets to open a path, and her special command is to fire a cover shot that will stun enemies for easier pickings.
----
* ActionGirl: Becomes more evident after being freed by Munenori's control and allowed to cut loose. She's downright devastating with her guns.
* AttackDrone: Can summon these for her SuperMode, in imitation of Nobunaga's Genma form from ''Onimusha 3''. How she inherited her originally-human uncle's abilities through blood is [[FridgeLogic never addressed]].
* BodyHorror: She was infected with Genma Insects so she wouldn't leave Hideyoshi's side. As a result, they tore through her body and caused some serious damage, until she was left a moaning, blood-spewing [[PeoplePuppets puppet]] that was driven to fight against her will. Soki's Purification technique and some rest thankfully rid her of the bugs and body damage.
* ClothingDamage: Her new outfit exposes her midsection because of this. Since the previous outfit was baggier to hide the BodyHorror caused by the Genma Insects, she's actually glad to be able to use something lighter.
* DemolitionsExpert: She can use gunpowder and explosives as part of her arsenal, as well as to clear paths previously unavailable to the party.
* GrapplingHookPistol: An armlet she uses to attach onto high poles and swing across gaps.
* TheGunslinger: Her whole arsenal is based on guns and rifles of all types, ranging from shotguns to slug launchers to laser guns.
* HeelFaceTurn: Downplayed, the only reasons why she was following Hideyoshi was due to the Genma Insects keeping her in check and her fear of backlash. With the insects gone, she's allowed to finally cut loose against him.
* ItsPersonal: Much like Soki, she harbors deep-seething hatred against Hideyoshi for his turn to evil, but Soki is ultimately the one to harbor the most personal anger towards him. [[spoiler:Ohatsu instead feuds with the Genma priestess Ophelia, who pretended to be her sister Yodo and later fights Ohatsu one-on-one on the party's way to Fushimi Castle.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLSINBtyb4Y Ohatsu's Theme]]", a beautiful traditional piece with a coordinated beat.
* MacrossMissileMassacre[=/=]RoboTeching: Her Awakening summons a barrage of missiles that can target and home in on enemies.
* MasterOfUnlocking: She can remove Genma locks with special explosives.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Soki, since at least their late childhood.
* {{Stripperific}}: Her outfit after the first one was destroyed.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type 2.

\
Tenkai has the ability to speak with the souls of the dead for hints and key items. He can also increase your strength with his special command of Praying.
----

* CanonCharacterAllAlong: [[spoiler:He's actually Samanosuke Akechi.]]
* TheComicallySerious: He's the most serious and devoted of the group, but that doesn't stop him from snarking here and there.
* CoolOldGuy: His age is deliberately left vague, along with his design not being helpful enough to determine a number. The only thing certain is that he's been around for a ''while'', and he's easily the most knowledgeable member of the group, as well as a capable fighter.
* CunningLinguist: Speaks fluent Spanish, which is how the group manages to talk Roberto into joining their cause at first.
* GeniusBruiser: Intelligent and can speak other languages, and just as capable of dishing out pain towards the Genma.
* HeroicSacrifice: He puts himself in front of Hideyoshi's attack so Soki and Ohatsu can escape to Mt. Hiei. [[BigDamnHeroes Thankfully it doesn't last.]]
* HistoricalBadassUpgrade:
** The real Tenkai Nankobo was a monk of the highest Buddhist order who acted as a consultant for many important figures in Japan's shogunates, as well as the man in charge of rebuilding monuments previously destroyed by Nobunaga. This version of Tenkai is not only a monk, he's also a profficient fighter and magic-user who can go toe-to-toe with demons without breaking a sweat.
** Some historical accounts also speculate that he's actually an alias of Mitsuhide Akechi, who took the name after his disappearance in the Battle of Yamazaki, then living as a monk for the remainder of his life. [[spoiler:The game plays with this rumor, as Tenkai here would actually be Mitsuhide's son-in-law.]]
* HolyHandGrenade: He can throw purifying spell tags that attach onto enemies and explode. One of his techniques can also turn an enemy good for a short duration.
* ItsPersonal: While not as strong as the other characters, the game gives him a rivalry of his own with Mitsunari, TheDragon to Hideyoshi's rule of Japan. [[spoiler:In reality, he's opposing the Genma Claudius, who is possessing Mitsunari.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8tOMsT1ohI Tenkai's Theme]]", a techno remix of the ''Onimusha 3'' main theme with an added choir. [[spoiler:Given Tenkai's real name, this doubles as a MusicalSpoiler.]]
* LightEmUp: His Awakening imbues his weapon with holy power and the ability to use "Light Arrows".
* MalevolentMaskedMan: At first in Sawayama, before revealing it was a SecretTestOfCharacter.
* ThemeNaming: His weapons are named after gods and concepts of Hinduism.
* RedOniBlueOni: A color-swapped Blue Oni to Soki's Red Oni, being insightful, wise and knowing how to strategize.

\
A huge Westerner who was born and raised in Japan by the Western priest Luis Frois. However, when Luis turned evil, he was forced to run away and now he's seeking revenge on his foster father for killing his other students. He joins Soki after being rescued by him, with the intent to kill Luis.

\
His immense physical strength allows him to move heavy objects and levers, as well as opening heavy iron doors by punching them and handling stiff levels the other characters can't move. He can also be ordered to go Berserk, a variation of going all-out but without being able to flinch.
----
* TheBigGuy: He's the largest and physically strongest of the characters, letting him solve problems that require brute strength.
* BoxingBattler: He has the "Exorcising Beads" Gaia Uranos implanted in his arms, so that he can tear the Genma apart with his bare hands, as well as destroy the Dark Stones. While powerful, he has considerably less range than other characters. Plus, he cannot dodge by dashing away (he bobs and weaves like actual boxers).
* ButNotTooForeign: He's half-Spanish, half-Japanese. This was the cause of a lot of harassment towards him and his mother, to the point he refused to speak Japanese. However, he begins to open up to Soki and company due to their kindness and understanding.
* CharacterDevelopment: The first time he appears, he's grouchy, unresponsive and refuses to talk to the other companions. After being saved again, he warms up and reveals his true colors, and ultimately ends up considering Soki and the others as TrueCompanions.
* GentleGiant: His favorite book is ''Romeo and Juliet''.
* GeniusBruiser: He's pretty much as intelligent as his foster father when it comes to machinery, but he can also pummel the Genma to death with only his hands.
* GratuitousSpanish: Subverted in that it's actual, fluent Spanish, but he resigns himself to only this language when you first meet him. He drops it after warming up to the party.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:Develops a budding crush on Ohatsu that ultimately isn't realized.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7Bl75mdyU0 Roberto's Theme]]", a melancholic piano and guitar theme, but still full of energy and drive.
* PowerFist: Gloves and Gauntlets are his weapons of choice.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Against Luis Frois for the murder of his other students, Roberto's friends. [[spoiler:Even after the reveal that Luis is being possessed by the Genma Rosencrantz, he still feels it's better to put his father out of his misery.]]
* RapidFireFisticuffs: His special LimitBreak move.
* TheQuietOne: In the first part of the game, he doesn't speak at all outside of cutscenes, with even his battle dialogue being muted.
* ThemeNaming: His strongest weapons are named after archangels.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: His Death Grip technique, which immobilizes enemies in strings and lets him throw them around.

The wicked warlord from Owari. He was killed at Okehazama, only to be resurrected by the Genma in order to be their vassal in the conquest of Japan, as well as the world. After Fortinbras' demise, he [[TookALevelInBadass takes over his throne]] and becomes the new Genma Lord, becoming the main human antagonist of the series.

\
While he's the main point of conflict in the first game, he isn't faced directly until "''Samurai's Destiny''" by Jubei Yagyu, and even then he comes back one more time for ''"Demon's Siege"'' to fight Samanosuke, at the infamous siege of Honno-ji.
----

* BadassCape: His outfits throughout the series always include one, with particular mention going to his armor in ''3'' where it nearly touches the floor.
* BigBad: In the second and third game respectively, where he had successfully taken control of the Genma hordes.
* ConquerorFromTheFuture: Inverted in the third game, where he would be a Conqueror from the ''Past'' had Guildenstern succeeded in bringing him into the future using the Time Folder.
* CoolSword: His weapon. Revealed to be a WhipSword in ''Demon Siege''.
* CounterAttack: Remember that really useful [[OneHitKill Issen attack]] of yours that enables you to severely damage a boss if you parry in time? Well, '''he can do that''' in ''3''. Have fun…
* DemonKingNobunaga: One of the standout examples of the trope, as the ruler and supreme commander of the Genma for most of the ''Onimusha'' franchise. Though [[VideoGame/SengokuBasara it wouldn't be Capcom's last venture into this trope in regards to Nobunaga.]]
* DemonLordsAndArchDevils: He became the new Genma Lord after Fortrinbras's death, staying in the position until "''Demon Siege''".
* ElementalPowers: The same as Jubei's in ''2'', while in ''3'' he uses the familiar trio of [[FireIceLightning Fire Wind Lightning]] in reference to Samanosuke's three starting weapons.
* EvilOverlord: Of the Genma, after the fall of Fortinbras in the first game.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: "A man's life is 50 years… but a wink in the life of the cosmos…"
* FlamingHair: His final form in the third game.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: Arguably one of the most famous examples of Nobunaga being shown as a ruthless, evil conqueror with ties to powerful occult forces bent on world domination and gratuitous human slaughter. Many who remember Nobunaga as a video game antagonist usually think back to "''Onimusha''" as one of, if not THE codifier for the image of DemonLordNobunaga.
* ImpromptuTracheotomy: Died the first time with an arrow through his neck as he rushed into battle. [[BackFromTheDead And then the Genma brought him back]].
* KillItWithFire: Like his historical counterpart, he likes to do that. Much like the historical accounts suggest, he also did "perish amidst the flames of Honnoji Temple". [[spoiler:He was actually sealed for eternity inside the Oni Gauntlet, but it's not entirely wrong either.]]
* LoadBearingBoss: After his defeat in the second game.
* NonActionBigBad: For most of ''Demon Siege''. While he is the main villain controlling the Genma, that's about all he does until the final battle. For all the talk of bringing him into Paris in the future, Nobunaga himself doesn't seem to be in the know about the plan — he notably reacts with confusion when Samanosuke is caught in the Time Folder's transportation, and comments that Jacques "ran away" when he's sent back to the future after one fight with him, then reacting in shock when Samanosuke enters the room after already defeating his past self.
* OneWingedAngel: Twice in ''2'' (his demon form and later the Golden Evil Statue) and once in ''3'', always assuming a demonic form to fight the main characters.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: In all the games he appears he's only met and fought at the very end.
* TheQuisling: In the first game, he strikes up a deal with Fortinbras to take over Japan in his name.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: After becoming a Genma, his eyes gained a red glow, signaling his inhuman state.
* SealedEvilInACan: [[spoiler:His soul is sealed inside the Oni Gauntlet, who uses part of his powers to power up Soki in the battle against Fortinbras in ''Dawn of Dreams''.]]
* SpikesOfVillainy: On his armor.
* TakeOverTheWorld: Starting with Japan. ''Demon Siege'' one-ups this by having him starting a simultaneous invasion of both the past and future.
* TookALevelInBadAss: From "The Fool of Owari" to Lord of the Genma.

->''"Maggots like you will burn in hell!"''

\
A skinny, evil Genma scientist who resurrected Nobunaga and created many horrible monsters to unleash against Samanosuke. He's a heartless monster who performs all sorts of terrifying experiments, all for the sake of his demented view of science.

\
He becomes a bigger threat in "''Demon Siege''", staging the invasion of Paris, France in 2004 through his newly-invented Time Folder, seeking to bring Nobunaga and a bigger legion of Genma into the future in order to conquer it. Samanosuke then finally manages to bring his twisted machinations to an end.
----

* BadassCape: In ''Demon Siege''.
* BackFromTheDead: In the manga ''TWILIGHT OF DESIRE'', he's briefly brought back to life, seeking revenge, but he's stopped and sent back to hell by Tenkai.
* BerserkButton: Humans in general, but especially if one "dares" to insult or belittle him.
* BlackComedy: Often. Perhaps the best example is his excited "And what's this? Ooh, a liver!" whilst in the middle of dissecting some poor sod.
* BossBanter: When you fight him in "''Demon Siege''", where he mostly just issues commands and activates a Time Folder to rewind the battle and give him an unfair advantage.
* CardCarryingVillain: Like the majority of the Genma. He relishes in being an evil, twisted monster.
* CombatTentacles: Subverted. In his first appearance, he produces slim red tentacles from his shell-like nape to better dissect a dead man on his table. He never shows them again in the story or afterwards, neither does he use them in combat when he's fought in "3".
* DetachableLowerHalf: In order to float around his boss arena.
* TheDragon: To Nobunaga, although he openly comments he finds him "foolish".
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His introduction, in which he's gleefully experimenting on an unfortunate dead human. See BlackComedy above.
* EvilGenius: A Genma scientist working to enslave humanity and conquer the world through genetic experimentation and [[OrganicTechnology bio-mechanical contraptions]].
* EvilGloating: ''Often''.
* EvilIsHammy: One of the hammiest among the Genma's ranks, and that's saying something.
* EvilLaugh: All the time.
* EvilSoundsDeep: He has a deep, distorted voice in the Japanese dub, in stark contrast to his eerily high-pitched voice in the English dub.
* FantasticRacism: He loathes humans (their internal organs aside) and often refers to them as "maggots", which is a shared sentiment by the Genma as a whole.
* FlunkyBoss: During his boss fight, he summons two ''Fobora'' (Dark Puppets) to help him. And if you kill them, he'll revive them. Again and again.
* ForScience: Carries out inhuman experiments on animals and plants alike, creates horrifying machines that mix human flesh and mechanical parts and developes horrifying new weapons for the Genma, all in the name of his twisted pursuit of "science".
* ForTheEvulz: What his "science" ultimately is, finding new ways to make horrible things happen.
* TheGhost: In the second game, he's mentioned a couple of times but never encountered.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: He gets away with all sorts of atrocities in the first two games, but you finally get to kill him in the third.
* LandmarkingTheHiddenBase: In "''Demon Siege''", he sets up shop at Mont-Saint-Michel to instal his first functioning Time Folder prototype in the future, but his personal headquarters are situated at the Boulogne Zoo in Paris proper, better suited for his experiments on animals and humans alike.
* LargeHam: He [[ChewingTheScenery absolutely]] ''[[ChewingTheScenery devours]]'' [[ChewingTheScenery the scenery]] whenever he's on-screen.
* LeanAndMean: He's basically a walking skeleton with dessicated skin and a shell-like head.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "''Demon's Siege''" gives him the initial chorus of Mozart's "Dies Irae" during his first appearance. It later gets retooled for his boss theme as well.
* MadScientist: One of the Genma's scientific experts in all things awful and inhumane, along with his collaborator Rosencrantz.
* MeaningfulName: Guildenstern is yet another Genma named after a character in William Shakespeare's "''Hamlet''", namely one of Hamlet's best friends along with Rosencrantz, charged by his uncle, King Claudius, to distract him from his apparent madness.
* MoralMyopia: Best shown when he first discovers the Boulogne Zoo. [[EvilCannotComprehendGood Not only can he not understand any motive for confining animals in such a fashion besides cruel experimentation]], but he's outraged that humans dare do such a thing to "creatures they are barely above them". Yes, the guy who does nothing but experiment on humans and ''repeatedly'' refers to them as "maggots" is [[{{Hypocrite}} outraged at the thought of humans experimenting on animals]]. He "helps" the animals to seek revenge by turning them into Genma, which kills most of the species he experiments on.
* NoIndoorVoice: He does occasionally hiss his lines at Samanosuke, but most of the time he's building up his delivery into a hammy dramatic flourish at the end of each sentence. Doesn't help that his voice reverberates.
* OminousLatinChanting: Courtesy of Mozart's "Dies Irae" being his leitmotif for "''Demon Siege''".
* PlagiarismInFiction: He copied many of the Oni's projects (especially those regarding the Time Folder) while claiming that there's nothing wrong with it if it's for the Genma's progress.
* PowerEchoes: His voice has a noticeable reverb whenever he speaks.
* PowerGlows: When you fight him, he glows light green and can engulf his staff in flames. On the other hand, the red glow of his briefly-exposed spine means that he's vulnerable to attacks.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: They even glow in ''Demon Siege''.
* TimeMaster: He managed to build a Time Folder, but doesn't know how to make it work properly. [[spoiler:By the time Samanosuke has killed him, however, he has finally made a stable Time Folder ready to operate.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: He proves this when he fully intends to dissect Henri alive before turning him into a Genma.
--> '''Guildenstern:''' How I ''love'' children. Their organs are so ''fresh'' and ''soft''...

The first serious opponent faced by Samanosuke, is a huge, clumsy demon with large fangs and a club who kidnaps Princess Yuki. He's killed by Samanosuke's [[ShockAndAwe Raizan]] sword. However he still makes some cameos in the second game and he has even a statue in ''VideoGame/OnimushaDawnOfDreams''. In ''Onimusha Soul'' he's implied to be the Genma form of Musashibo Benkei.
----
* TheBrute: Really, he doesn't have strategy beyond "hit with club" and "charge".
* CarryABigStick: Wields a Kanabo.
%%* DumbMuscle
%%* EvilSoundsDeep
* IAmAHumanitarian: Plans to eat Samanosuke after killing him. He claims that angry humans are very tasty.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Threatens to kill and devour Samanosuke. After his death, his corpse is consumed by the floating Genma Skulls.
* KickTheDog: Mocks Samanosuke after knocking him out cold. Also, he will attempt to crush Samanosuke's head if he's downed near him.
* KnightOfCerebus: He's the main reason why Samanosuke needs the help of the Oni in the first place.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Many small fangs and two huge tusks to his name.
* ThisCannotBe: Dies in utter disbelief after Samanosuke finishes him off for good.
* WakeUpCallBoss: You may have [[ICallItVera Raizan]] now, but he's still very dangerous.

A Former Oni warrior who was killed and turned into a Genma by Guildenstern. He faces Samanosuke and later Jacques several times in the first and third games and even makes a cameo in ''Dawn of Dreams'' where he attempt to kill Soki in the Oni Mansion but is bested. His role is also to remind Samanosuke what could happen to him if he fails to control his powers.
----

* AlasPoorVillain: Once a noble Oni warrior, he was forcibly turned into a monster and unleashed against the very people he sought to protect.
* {{BFS}}: A scimitar in 1 and a strange, large broadsword which can grow larger in 3.
* BlowYouAway: In the first game, where he wields the powers of the Wind Orb.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Sort of.
* DualWielding: His ultimate form in 1 gives him a large blade in each hand.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: A Gauntlet-Shield. He discards it halfway through the battle.
* OneWingedAngel: He gets powered up in 1.
* PowerFloats: In 1, after discarding his shield he will start floating above the ground and moving at after-image producing speed.
* RecurringBoss: Seriously, you'll have to fight him a ''lot''.
* ShockAndAwe: In 3 he can give you a nasty shock with his greatsword.
* TragicMonster: According to his background, he was one of the greatest Oni warriors, but was tricked and assassinated by Guildenstern, who turned his corpse against his fellow Oni. To make things worse, he's able to revive/clone him as much as he likes.
* TurnsRed: In 3 after suffering enough damage he'll discard the shield and make his {{BFS}} bigger and zappy. Literally in the first game, where his second appearence has a red tint and attacks with red energy.
* WeCanRebuildHim: In the first game alone, after his first defeat, he's modified by Guildenstern, first as an even harder hitter and later as a LightningBruiser. After his (and Guildenstern's) absence in 3 and his apparent final death in 1, Marcellus comes back as "Ultimate Marcellus" and is encountered twice (or more, if the Dark Realm is visited) as a mini boss.

----

* {{Bowdlerize}}: Her transformation scene in the NA version was edited to not show the abdomen emerging from between her legs.
* FanService: Her transformation to her demon form from human can be this, or...
** FanDisservice: Depending on your tastes, of course.
* FlunkyBoss: She constantly summons Genma to attack you.
* GiantFlyer: She spends all her time hovering over the arena.
* IdenticalStranger: The boss in Sawayama Castle in ''Shin Onimusha'' who looks incredibly similar, except for the fact that she's stuck to a wall, larger and looks more decomposed. According to Website/TheOtherWiki, they're not the same demon.
* MookMaker: Subverted, she calls the Genma Drones in her nest her babies, but they actually crawl inside the building from the waters. In ''Shin Onimusha'', the eggs she produces give birth to various different Genma.
* NonMammalMammaries: A giant wasp-woman with breasts.
* NotQuiteDead: After plummeting into the water inside her nest, she emerges and tries to run through Samanosuke, only to be crushed and burned to death by falling debris. 660* KickTheDog: Zaps Yuki into unconsciousness with his powers for shit and giggles.
* LargeAndInCharge: The leader of the Genma in first game and by far the largest.

* GiantSpaceFleaFromNoWhere: In the last fight [[spoiler: he drives a Giant Genma Robot made of Bamboo]].
* HeelFaceTurn: Temporarily and only in the backstory of ''Dawn of Dreams''. 806* BossBanter: He speaks almost non-stop during his fight.
* CoolSword: A Kukri-like magical blue sword. [[spoiler:You have to destroy it before you can damage him.]]
* EarlyBirdCameo: He appears as a playable character in ''Onimusha Blade Warriors'' and is the only character from that game introduced in Onimusha 3. Given [[OneSceneWonder his role in Onimusha 3]] perhaps including Jacques or Ranmaru instead would have made more sense.
* FaceHeelTurn: Used to be a valiant Oni warrior, but then he betrayed them out of the blue and sided with the Genma.
* FlunkyBoss: [[spoiler:Reach the deepest bottom of the Dark Realm and he appears along with three Dark Genma Generals, the strongest breed and probably the strongest non-boss enemy in game fullstop.]]
* GracefulLoser: Takes his death in stride, laughing as he explodes.
* InformedAbility: AllThereInTheManual. Subverted in the fourth game, where you can have a taste of his power.
* MagicKnight: A skilled swordsman who can still attack with fireballs and shockwaves.
* MasterSwordsman: As shown in the intro, he can even outmatch Samanosuke.
* ObviouslyEvil: Look at him.
* OffstageVillainy: We never actually see him killing [[spoiler: Kaede.]]
* OhCrap: Has this reaction upon realizing that Samanosuke ended up on the vital platform hanging right over the colossal Genma's brain, which ends up causing the destruction of the whole army.

* BladeEnthusiast: She uses a series of long knives as her main weapon.
* ClingyJealousGirl: So it seems from her letters.
* DarkActionGirl: Fights for her husband with a moveset worthy of a ninja.
* DoppelgangerAttack: Does this when her health is low.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Probably due to being a demon. If ''Soul'' is to be believed, it also applied to her human form as Nohime.
* FemmeFatalons: Her nails, without counting the giant red claws on her other set of arms.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: All right, Kichou/Nouhime was just a typical Japanese lady during her time, loyal to her husband and at least inherited the strong will of her father, the Viper of Mino. But of course, entering the contract with Genma means that she HAS to be a psychotic bitch.
* MsFanservice: Aside from her arms and feet, she's quite beautiful, with long luscious hair and perky boobs. Even more so in her human form in ''Onimusha Soul'', sporting a gorgeous western-style dress with an ImpossiblyLowCleavageLine.
* MultiarmedAndDangerous: Her two long, red, demonic arms.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Due to the fact that she wears, at most, two metal cups on her chest, leaving the middle part of her torso exposed.

----

* AnimalMotifs: Crows. Besides his raven-black hair, he's always surrounded by a murder of these, which he also uses as part of his combat moveset and torture techniques.
* AxCrazy: He hates swordfighting, but has nothing against gore and gratuitous killing.
* BadAssBoast:

* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:After eating the Genma Insects. Much like with Ohatsu and Sakon before him, his skin becomes discolored and he spews out bile with each coughing fit.]]
* CardCarryingVillain: A slightly "realistic" variation, since he's not cartoonish enough to be LaughablyEvil, but he's also not serious enough to be too intimidating. He basically just enjoys acting like a complete bastard and will take any opportunity to mentally or physically torture the protagonists.
* CloudCuckooLander: Mainly because he's batshit insane, but he really takes the cake when, in order to be sure that his taunting message will reach Soki, he shot 500 "arrowgrams" (a message attached to an arrow) at Mount Hiei's Lazuline Hall.
* CombatPragmatist: His boss fights invoke this constantly. Not only does he have no reservations with sending his murder of crows at the player to deal damage, he'll attack as they defend from his previous barrier-breaking swipe and, should the protagonists knock him down with a combo, he'll get up and throw dust at them to temporarily stun them and leave them wide open for punishment.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: [[spoiler:He and his pet crow tried to attack human!Fortinbras. He got all of his bones broken.]]
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: He ''relishes'' in being a cruel bastard and having the Genma on his beck-and-call. [[spoiler:In the final battle, he's so corrupted and crazed from the Genma Insects that he doesn't even bother to land properly after jumping from a roof.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Evil as he is, he ''never'' stops trying to kill Jubei or the other heroes. [[spoiler:Even the epilogue hints that he's possibly still alive, despite being visibly struck down by the God of Light himself.]]
* DualWielding: With Shirasaya swords.
* EvilLaugh: Often, even in his boss battles.
* EyepatchOfPower: [[spoiler:It actually hides his Demon Eye.]]
* AHandfulForAnEye: One of his tricks in battle.
* HateSink: Munenori might not be as brutal as Nobunaga, but the game feels like making you want to hate him ''even more'' than Nobunaga; starting with [[TreacheryIsASpecialKindOfEvil being a willing traitor to the Yagyu clan]], being an utter {{Jerkass}} to a great caliber, revelling in giving copious KickTheDog moments with absolutely no regret with minimum involvement of the Genma and, finally, being one of the worst cases of HistoricalVillainUpgrade within the franchise to the point of only being related to the real Yagyu Munenori InNameOnly (as a note; he didn't even bother with politics here).
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler:Subverted: when he learns the truth about Sekishusai and his Demon Eye he seems shocked... only to reveal that he doesn't give a damn about it and is content with being the evil bastard he is.]]
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: One of the worst treatments given to Yagyu Munenori, who was actually a stern, fair swordsman-politician who encouraged the usage of swords to protect others, not taking lives gratuitously. Granted, vilifying Munenori was kind of a common practice to rev up the reputation of the more popular [[UsefulNotes/YagyuJubei Mitsuyoshi]], but this one takes it further.
* JerkAss: Just look how he treats Ohatsu, for starters.
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Sort of; it's implied that he had Ohatsu infected with Genma Insects to keep her under control. In the final battle, he uses the insects on himself at full power to gain an advantage, but only ends up getting so corrupted that he can barely land on the ground after a jump.]]
* LaughingMad:
* MasterSwordsman: Jubei admits that he's one of the most skilled warriors from the Yagyu Village, after learning the Yagyu technique from Sekishusai himself. This is something he ''despises'', however, since it's the only technique he's experienced with, and therefore the only way he can fight at all.
* RecurringBoss: You'll fight him more often than many of the other major antagonists of the game, a total of four times.
* RightHandAttackDog: His pet ravens, which he uses in battle. He doesn't seem to care much about them either, though, and can easily replace a dead pet with another one.
* ShouldersOfDoom: The better to serve as a perch for his pet ravens.
* SlasherSmile: Pretty much all the time.
* TheStarscream: [[spoiler:His secret agenda apparently involves resurrecting Fortinbras and then killing him.]]
* WhyWontYouDie: He just does ''not'' know when to die. [[spoiler:It's even implied that he's still kicking in the SequelHook at the end]].
* YinYangBomb: [[spoiler:In his confrontation with Jubei at Nagoya Castle, he reveals he's infected himself with Genma Insects, which means that now he wields the powers of both the Oni (his Demon eye) and the Genma.]]

* FatBastard: Short and portly, not to mention morally bankrupt due to Genma possession.
* ForScience: He's the Scientist of the Genma Triumvirate after all. Subverted in that originally he did use his science for good as Luis.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: Played with. He was also known as a kind man who otherwise just preached the concepts of Christianity to the locals, and also witnessed the fall of Nobunaga in Honno-ji from his church ''literally across the street''. [[spoiler:The game's incarnation of Luis is actually ''still'' a noble, kind-hearted man, but he's being possessed by a demon making him do horrible things.]]

* NavelDeepNeckline [[spoiler: Her outfit has a plunging neckline as Ophelia, though not as extreme as her artwork shows.]]
* PoisonousPerson: During her boss battle, she leaves behind clouds of Miasma, which can poison you on touch and that you must purify first.
* UpperClassTwit: She addresses Soki as "Foul Oni", and treat him with contempt just like Vega Donna did.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Unlike Vega Donna, she has short, white hair, and a moth's eyes and antennae in them.

!!The Genma Mother Tree

The Largest of the Genma Trees and the main source of power for Hideyoshi, it envelops Fushimi Castle in his body. Its song is calling forth the Omen Star which will give to Hideyoshi God-like Powers. Soki's objective is to burn down this tree in order to stop Hideyoshi's plans. [[spoiler: The Tree is actually Yodo, Ohatsu's sister, and during the final act she tears Ophelia apart and absorbs Hideyoshi in her body. She's eventually purified by Soki with Requiem, and both Yodo and Hideyoshi are spit out.]]

!!The God Of Light Fortinbras/The Man in White
->Voiced by: Creator/YasunoriMasutani (JP), J. Grant Albrecht (EN)

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Fortinbras_Omega_7519.jpg]]

The most powerful Genma, he's the one who created their race, and claimed to have created mankind to serve as food for his children. He was killed during the war against the Oni clan and sealed inside the Omen Star. He's revealed as Fortinbras, the White Serpent and the man in white who appeared to Soki many times ingame. After the arrival of the star his embryo hatches and resurrect the God as the allmighty giant White Serpent, and he later battles Soki in his human form, but he's killed once and for all. It's unknown whether this Fortinbras and the one from ''Warlords'' are actually the same demon god, [[WildMassGuessing or if the 1 Fortinbras was merely a high class Genma who took his name and appearance]].

* AmbiguousSituation: Is he Fortinbras from ''Warlords'' at his full strength, or was the Fortinbras in that game merely a particularly strong Genma who took his appearance and name? No clear answer is ever given.
* AffablyEvil: As the Man in White.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: His "business form" probably the biggest boss ever faced. Averted with his true Man in White form, who is human-sized.
* BeamSpam: His Man in White form has such an attack.
* TheChessMaster: The entire game has Fortinbras' plan unfolding to the very end, being stopped only by Soki's sacrifice.
* ElementalPowers: The good old trio [[MythologyGag Fire, Lightning and Wind.]] The Man in White has even more.
* EldritchAbomination: His true form is surely this, though he usually appears as a HumanoidAbomination, while the White Serpent is merely his "business form" he takes in dark ceremonies.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: During the dialogue before the final battle against Soki, as well as how it's in his nature, he created the Genma in his image after all, and they ''all'' cannot comprehend good.
* AGodAmI: And he is! He even announces one of his most devastating attacks with such a boast.
* GodIsEvil: He's the deity of light and creator of mankind... except that he has the mindset of an AlwaysChaoticEvil CardCarryingVillain that [[EvilCannotComprehendGood is completely alien to the term 'good']]. After all, the creatures created in his image was the Genma, not humans (they just serve as foods, in his mind).
* HijackedByGanon: If you believe that he's the same Fortinbras from the first game, then yes.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Lore-wise, the humans he used as food for the Genma ultimately turned against his breed, and he can be defeated by sending his giant light sphere back at him.
* KickTheDog: When he zaps Munenori's crow after he tried to save his master.
* LargeHam: He can give [[NobleDemon Gogandantess]] a lesson or two on Hamminess.
* LightIsNotGood: Albeit he has an extremely demonic appearance for an example of this trope, but he still counts. Given that many Genma (such as Hideyoshi or Claudius) are actually vulnerable to light, it's implied that this applies to his own subjects as well.
* NintendoHard: Hoo boy. Easily the hardest boss in the whole series.
* OneWingedAngel: Inverted, the White Serpent is a form he takes in order to bless his minions during the dark ceremonies, while the Man in White is his real form, and no less powerful.
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: When he prepares his attack: "Feel my power, Feel the end!"
* RoarBeforeBeating: The White Serpent.
* SealedEvilInACan: He's sealed inside the Omen Star.
* UnholyNuke: His strongest attack is a colossal sphere of light shrouded in miasma. In order to make him vulnerable you have to dispel the miasma and chuck the ball back to him.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: His humanoid form is called 'Man in White' and he's the creator/ruler of the Genma race as a whole.
* VillainousBreakdown: After Soki stabs his guts with Requiem, he blabbers on [[ThisCannotBe how it should be impossible to defeat him]], and [[DefiantToTheEnd spits on the human race, referring them as 'fools to the end']], [[EvilCannotComprehendGood not being able to comprehend that humanity's goodness and faith are what enabled them to defeat him as Soki coined.]]
