!!Schoolgirl Trio
[[folder:In General]]
* TenderTomboyishnessFoulFemininity: The trio has some of this going on. Yukko rarely messes with anyone on purpose, being a by-and-by nice GenkiGirl who's left to react to a lot of madcap antics (seen in how sweetly she reacts to an alleged love confession by a female friend, despite not being ready to hear it). Her feminine-looking and quiet friend Mai, on the other hand, takes a {{Troll}} to the next level, ''especially'' [[TheGadfly around Yukko]], and likewise, their feminine-looking friend Mio ''will'' go all out pulling brutal wrestler moves on people and animals that upset her.

-->''"I should be glad nothing perishable landed on me!"''

One of the six "main" characters of the series, "Yukko" is an ordinary student with a propensity for forgetting her homework. She is also locked in a perpetual "[[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine Boke and Tsukkomi]]" gag with Mai.
----
* AbusiveParents: Downplayed and PlayedForLaughs, but her mother isn't above {{Dope Slap}}ping her, and seems to believe her daughter isn't very smart.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Nothing in Yukko's response to Mai's "confession" says that she isn't receptive to going out with a girl, only that she's either blindsided by the confession or not ready to date.
* BerserkButton: She can only take being called stupid so much before she snaps.
* BookDumb: Not as substantial as other cases, but she does have to borrow homework from Mio on a regular basis.
* BreathWeapon: PlayedForLaughs, but she can shoot beams out of her mouth when in enough pain.
* ButtMonkey: The entire universe is apparently out to get her.
* CannotTellAJoke: She's GiftedlyBad at it.
* CelebrityResemblance: Yuuko is once mistaken for the famous author Doublecheeseburgirl by two middle-schoolers. When we actually see the author in Chapter 148, she's pretty much Yuuko down to the hairstyle and choice of hoodie, but with a chiseled and exhausted face (likely from being in the manga industry).
* CoolBigSis: Earns this right with the Professor. The Professor adores her and, in a manga chapter, Yukko proves capable of resisting the Professor's tantrums, even if only by being more nonsensical. In a TimeSkip chapter, an adolescent Professor becomes ecstatic upon hearing Yukko's coming back to Japan.
* CostumeEvolution: The final chapter shows her having ''really'' reinvented her style over the TimeSkip abroad.
* DumbassHasAPoint: She deduces that Nano is a robot simply because she has a WindUpKey on her back. Mio ([[GenreBlindness who doesn't seem to understand what kind of manga this is]]) points out that not only is this flimsy reasoning, but that [[InnocentlyInsensitive Nano is clearly distressed when people think that she's a robot]], and that Yukko should stop before she hurts Nano's feelings.
* EasilyImpressed:
** She's dazzled out of her wits when she learns that Nano is actually a robot and becomes enraptured by everything the Professor makes her do as if she were a little kid. Even the simple act of pouring a cup of tea out of Nano's removable wrist.
** In the manga, she's incredibly impressed when she learns Sakamoto can talk. Being Yuuko, she then decides that the best thing to do is to... ask him to shake her hand with his paw. Every time Sakamoto says something, Yuuko is incredibly impressed.
* FacePalm: One evening, after she's just got better from a cold, she remembers that she has two exams the next day. She tries to focus on English, but gets lost in her thoughts and ends up writing a poem. She promptly face palms after she realizes it.
* ForgetfulJones: One of Yuuko's defining traits is forgetting to do her homework through sheer negligence (and the one time she does do it, she forgets to bring it to school!). Not helping is a short revealing that she doesn't like doing homework in the first place, [[RidiculousProcrastinator and is quick to start procrastinating]].
* GenkiGirl: Although she is certainly genki, she also plays it up sometimes to hide embarrassment.
* GlobalIgnorance: In a series of flashbacks in the manga detailing how Mai and Yukko first met, we find out that Mai actually moved to Japan a little over a year ago, and is actually from Alaska. Mai sits down next to Yukko, who asks Mai which part of Japan Alaska is in.
* GoalInLife: Is twice shown to have no decided goal yet.
* GratuitousEnglish: A serial offender.
-->"'''SUPER'''-'''ULTRA'''-'''GREAT'''-'''DELICIOUS'''-'''WONDERFUL''' [adjective]!"
* HiddenDepths: She's a damn good poet. Mogami River...
** In Episode 23 we get a [[FreezeFrameBonus brief]] glimpse of her Future Plan Survey. Under "Things you are interested in" she's written "GlobalWarming" "Declining Birthrate", and "Aging Population", and her "Hopes for the future" square is [[SadClown completely blank]].
* ImagineSpot: Frequently daydreams in class about far-fetched scenarios on an airship, explaining how Mio got her hair-ties, her twin tails, and ''[[SequelEscalation her very person]]''.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: She becomes fast friends with the Professor during her random visit to the Shinonome laboratory.
* TheJinx: Inverted, if Episode 26 is any indication. She's apparently sort of a bad karma sink, being jinked herself, but in the process spreads good fortune to everyone around her.
** This also occurs in Chapter 123, where she gets hosed with water and catches a cold, then kicks a stone in frustration. This stone causes the Prime Minister of Japan to trip over and dodge an assassin's bullet.
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: See BreathWeapon above.
* {{Motif}}: Watermelons. Her favourite kind of soda is melon flavoured, she attempts to reinvent her image by wearing a pair of watermelon clip-ons in her hair, and one segment involves her eating melon bread, realising that she ate the expiration date, and then nervously chewing.
* OhCrap: When she realises that she may have pissed off Mio.
* PungeonMaster: She tries, anyway.
* PunnyName: The nickname "Yukko (ゆっこ)" is her actual name "Yuuko (ゆうこ)" written in hiragana with one stroke in the middle kana removed.
* StandingInTheHall: This happens to her often, since she frequently forgets to do her homework.
* StraightMan: Occasionally, if Mio is [[CovertPervert acting up]] or playing sports, or if Mai is in "Boke" mode.
%% * TaremeEyes
* TerribleArtist: In contrast with Mio, much to the latter's dismay.
* WaveMotionGun: When in enough pain, her screams let out these. One of them even ''pierces through all the planets of the solar system'' ([[MyFriendsAndZoidberg and]] [[PlutoIsExpendable Pluto]])!
* YankTheDogsChain: Whenever things seem to be looking up for Yukko, ''something'' will happen to take the wind out of her sails. One day, she'll remember to do her homework, only to forget to bring it to school. While on another, she might get a score of 80 on her test, but still end up below the class' average.
* YouHaveToBelieveMe: Yuuko keeps stumbling into the most mind-blowing scenarios -- ones which she knows no one will believe she saw, like the old and mild-mannered principal trying to wrangle a deer that had wandered onto the school grounds--and when it attacks him, he ends up ''suplexing'' it.

-->''"If she sees that drawing, she'll never think of me the same way again!"''

Another of the six "main" characters, Mio is the most normal of the cast, [[CloudCuckooLand but that isn't saying much]]. She usually plays the straight man to Yukko's antics, though she does have a rather short temper and can easily resort to violence when put in embarrassing situations.
----
* AthleticallyChallenged: She's very physically fit, yet she can't clear a low jump bar, or do any gym activity that doesn't involve fighting.
* BadassAdorable: This adorable, very nice young girl is more than capable of kicking your ass seven ways to Sunday if you accidentally piss her off too much. She even gets scouted as a boxer at one point.
* BerserkButton: She's [[BewareTheNiceOnes normally very nice]], but if you ever mess with her food, even by accident or if you expose her Yaoi drawings, ''get the hell outta there and head for the hills''!
* BreathWeapon: When in enough pain, her screams let out these.
* CovertPervert: To the extent that she [[BerserkButton beats up Yukko, a police officer, an old man, and a goat]] all in the name of preventing people from finding out she draws Yaoi.
* CuteBruiser: See BadassAdorable. She's cute as a button, but pretty damn strong.
* FlashStep:
** During her UnstoppableRage, she pulls off an [[Franchise/StreetFighter Ashura Senkuu]] before dragon screwing Sasahara's goat.
** She pulls a standard FlashStep when fighting some {{Mook}}s.
* FreakOut: Loses it over her Yaoi drawings being discovered and ripped apart.
* GirlishPigtails: Held together by wooden cubes which, according to Yukko's daydreams, are magical artefacts that fell on her head from a zeppelin.
* GretzkyHasTheBall: An in-universe example, she can't play sports to save her life. She used to practice Kendo and is quite adept in shadow-boxing and wrestling apparently, implying her problem is with non-combat sports.
* HairTriggerTemper: While she's generally a nice girl, she's still very prone to losing her temper when dealing with Yukko or her older sister Yoshino (though granted, the former is a bit of an idiot, and the latter is TheGadfly who regularly pulls pranks on Mio without warning).
* ImagineSpot: At one point creates an entire romantic scenario between Nano & Sasahara when Yuuko convinces her they're a couple.
* IwoJimaPose: Making small talk with Sasahara is momentous enough to merit a pose of a whole bunch of Mios raising a Sasahara flag!
* LaughingMad: When she, Yuuko and Mai are stuck in an elevator. After Mio says "Eggplant", she and Yuuko break down into mad laughter over this, the fact that they're not getting any help any time soon, ''and the fact that Mai appears to have died''. Laughing ''mad'' indeed.
* LostFoodGrievance: Don't mess with her food or bad things will happen. [[ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext Even if it's something as inane as putting a shogi piece on her Mont Blanc]].
* LoveHurts: After seeing Misato "escorting" Sasahara, she goes into HeroicBSOD.
* MoustacheDePlume: She writes her Yaoi manga under the masculine pen name "Daisuke Naganohara".
* MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes: When she tastes her sister's [[spoiler:kusaya (salted, sun-dried mackerel)]] jam the second time, the taste is so horrible that she sees her life flashing before her eyes.
* PowerPalms: During her fight against the green mooks.
* SeriousBusiness: Her food and her Yaoi.
* SignatureHairDecs: She wears two wooden cubes in her hair which are her most identifiable feature. Aside from being kind of an odd choice for hair decorations, they're completely ordinary. [[MindScrew Or are they?]]
* SpectacularSpinning: Hits Yoshino with a corkscrew and attacks Yukko and Sasahara's goat with a Dragon Screw.
* StraightMan: Most frequently of the main cast.
%% * TaremeEyes
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Completely loses it when a caterpillar crawls on her back in chapter 194, to the point her friends can't take it off because she's moving too much.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Her preferred method of knocking out people is using wrestling moves, like the Dragon Screw.
* YaoiFangirl: Has a not-so-secret hobby of drawing Yaoi Doujinshi. For your own safety, [[SeriousBusiness don't try to read it]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mai Minakami]]
[[quoteright:295:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mai_Nichijou_295_6315.png]]
[[caption-width-right:295:Don't take what she says at face value.]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MisuzuTogashi (Japanese), Creator/BrittanyLauda (English)

-->''"I was joking."''

Rounding off the protagonist trio with Yukko and Mio is Mai, a quiet, bespectacled girl with a fondness for [[ItAmusedMe screwing with people just to see how they'll respond]]. Makes up the "[[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine Boke]]" side of her relationship with Yukko. Also has a thing for whittling Buddha statues.
----
* TheAce: Mai is an honor student, being able to outsmart pretty much everyone (being the other prankster Yoshino the only one who can compete with her), talented in multiple disciplines, phsysically strong (being able to crush Yukko in arm wrestling with no effort) and agile (dodging multiple obstacles during a storm is an example of this).
* AlliterativeName: '''M'''ai '''M'''inakami.
* ButNotTooForeign: According to the manga Mai is actually from the US, specifically Alaska, but culturally she's Japanese through and through.
* CuteBookworm: Whenever she isn't interacting with the other characters, she's usually reading something.
* CutenessProximity: To the Professor, in something of an OutOfCharacterMoment.
* EmotionlessGirl: She shows little to no emotions in almost every situation.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Mai won't (intentionally) troll the Professor.
* FauxYay: Mai once fakes a LoveConfession to Yukko as a prank.
* FriendToAllChildren: While we only get to see her interacting with one child throughout the story, it seems she's fond of them. [[spoiler:Eventually, she becomes an elementary school teacher after she graduates high school.]]
* TheGadfly:
** Oh so very much. To the extent that she'll [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hKqYi2E9vY troll herself if no one is around]].
** She even trolls [[BreakingTheFourthWall Hyadain]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUgqIPKMRy8 in her character song]], by inviting him to sing the male parts before letting her time cut out in the middle of one of his lyrics.
* MindScrew: At one point she takes off her hair revealing it to be a wig. She later reveals her baldness to be a wig (a bald cap) as well.
* OneSidedArmWrestling: Absolutely crushes Yuuko at arm wrestling, no matter how many times she demands a rematch.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She seems to have a soft spot for Snaq, a candy mascot cat. When the Professor brings Nakamura wearing a Snaq costume to her home, Mai didn't just hug her (to Mio's surprise), but she was also surprised when Yukko said that there was a person into the suit.
* PetTheDog:
** To the Professor, after accidentally [[{{DudeNotFunny}} upsetting]] her and Sakamoto with [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes dogs]]. She makes up for it by giving her some shark chocolate.
** Also provides a more literal example in the way she treats her dogs.
* TheQuietOne: Rarely speaks a word unless spoken to.
* SerialEscalation: Her pranks get progressively more ridiculous.
* StoicSpectacles: She wears glasses and rarely shows any kind of emotion.
* UncattyResemblance: Her dogs are as bad as she is.
[[/folder]]

!!Shinonome Laboratories

[[folder:Nano Shinonome]]
[[quoteright:323:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Nano_Nichijou_323_66.png]]
[[caption-width-right:323:Sure, it's weird she's a robot, but look at everyone else.]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Shizuka Furuya (Japanese), Creator/MonicaRial (English)

A RidiculouslyHumanRobot who wishes she were a real girl more than anything, even if it means things like being able to get dental cavities. She struggles to keep the fact that she's a robot a secret. A struggle not at all helped by the obvious wind-up key in her back which her creator absolutely refuses to remove.
----
* AdaptationalBackstoryChange: Her story in the anime is changed a bit: In the manga, Nano was Yukko, Mio and Mai's classmate since the beginning. We can see her past about a few flashback episodes, where the Professor sent Nano to school so she have more time to eat snacks, and also gave her name, implying that Nano didn't have a name until that point. In the anime, Nano wouldn't go to school until the second half of the series. And even if the Professor also celebrated for being able to eat more snacks in the anime, if was Sakamoto who influenced her decision after noticing that Nano wanted to go to school (while in the manga Sakamoto was adopted after Nano started going to school).
* ArmCannon: Except it's equipped with tiny, harmless pellets instead of bullets. She also has one on [[LegCannon her knee]], for some reason.
* BadassAdorable: She's incredibly sweet and cute, but chapter 178 has her show off surprising new features: rocket jet propulsion from her feet, a pellet-shooting cannon on her knee, a shield from her palm, scan vision and heightened hearing. Not to mention the SuperStrength needed to hurl a ''giant boulder'' [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext at her piggybank]].
* BecomeARealBoy: She's a robot who wishes she could be a real girl, or at least to be able to pass as one. Unfortunately, the Professor's refusal to remove the wind-up key in Nano's back and her habit of installing weird new functions in Nano for her own amusement keeps getting in the way of that.
* BerserkButton: Her many new inventions that the Professor secretly installs on her.
* BornAsAnAdult: Downplayed since she's a teenager but she's stated to be only 1 year old.
* CrashIntoHello: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. When she crashes into a boy from school, it results in an EarthShatteringKaboom instead, followed by both parties landing on separate rooftops
* DoAnythingRobot: Except she can't [[DreadfulMusician play music]].
* DreadfulMusician: When she and the Professor are playing trumpets, Sakamoto comes in to scold the latter for the racket... except the Professor then shows she can't get any noise out of hers at all, meaning it was Nano making the dreadful sound, much to her embarrassment.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: She thinks she has convinced people that she isn't a robot. She hasn't.
* FaceFault: A built in feature, thanks to the Professor.
* FearOfThunder: She's scared of lightning, [[JustifiedTrope which makes sense, considering she's a robot]].
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Her main reason for wanting to be more human-like.
* MsFanservice: Not much of it, but at least compared to the other characters. One segment telling you about the animation studio and musicians has her in a swimsuit, and she's the only character to have visible breasts.
* NiceGirl: Probably the nicest character in the show, alongside Sakurai-sensei.
* PaperThinDisguise: She tries (with Yukko and Mai) to disguise herself from Mio by wearing a [[ItMakesSenseInContext daifuku mask]]. Mio immediately recognizes her because she can still see her key.
* ParentalSubstitute: The Professor's parents are never seen or mentioned, and Nano basically acts as a parental figure to her own creator.
* ProperlyParanoid: Downplayed. She has some pretty valid reasons to keep her robotic nature hidden, even in the {{Cloudcuckooland}} that ''Nichijou'' takes place in, due to Nakamura's interest in capturing and examining her. However, Nakamura is so utterly ''incompetent'' that Nano really isn't in any danger at all, to the point where she remains oblivious to the teacher's attempts to catch her.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: Her wind-up key is the only clue (or rather, dead giveaway) that she's a robot. Take it off, and nobody would guess. (Hell, even with it, Mio isn't initially convinced Nano is a robot right away).
* RobotGirl: A robot with the appearance of a young girl. The only outward indication that she's a robot is the wind-up key in her back.
* RocketPunch: One of her functions is to launch her right hand like a rocket. Unfortunately for her, it tends to fly off whenever it wants.
* SuperPoweredRobotMeterMaids: In addition to her [[ArmCannon pellet guns]], Chapter 178 reveals she also possesses SuperStrength, [[{{Jetpack}} Rocket Feet]], [[SuperSenses Super Sight & Hearing]] and some kind of [[DeflectorShields Energy Shield]].
* SwissArmyAppendage: Both of her arms have various functions hidden in them, which the Professor tends to add without her knowledge.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's afraid of cockroaches.
* WillfullyWeak: Chooses to not utilize even her less extreme functions, like speed-reading, for the sake of seeming that much more normal.
* WindUpKey: She has a large one sticking out of her back, much to her dismay, as it's a dead giveaway to the fact that she's a robot. The fact that its only purpose is to launch her toe like a rocket doesn't help either (that and the Professor thinks it's cute). She also points out she can't sit in a chair normally or lie down on her back. [[spoiler:She eventually realizes that this key is part of makes her who she is, and decides to keep it.]]
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: She's only 1 year old and has the body and mind of a teenage girl, but she's a lot wiser than her age would imply.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: She's 1 year old at the start of the series.

[[caption-width-right:323:The creator of Nano. Hard to believe, right?]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiromiKonno (Japanese), Creator/JadSaxton (English)

Nano's 8-year-old creator. Aside from her ability to build incredibly advanced machines, she's a completely normal kid. Likes sharks.
----
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Being only 8 years old, she tends to be easily distracted. This often happens when Nano asks her about her gadgets, much to the robot girl's dismay.
* BeerGasm: She does this with milk in the anime's first opening.
* BerserkButton: Do NOT insinuate that robots are not cute in her presence.
* BigEater: She can eat a month's supply of snacks and still have room for strawberry juice. An ongoing conflict between her and Nano is that she often wants to eat more snacks, even when Nano tells her she's not supposed to since it'll spoil her appetite for regular meals.
* BrattyHalfPint: She has her moments of being this, mainly by causing trouble for Nano in some way or making [[TheChewToy Sakamoto's]] life difficult.
* CheerfulChild: She's generally a pretty happy, upbeat kid.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: She's always referred to as Professor. We at least know her family name, but her given name is never mentioned.
* FearOfThunder: Not surprising at all, considering she's only 8.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: The Professor is capable of amazing inventions, but she can go 40-50 chapters between inventing anything. This trope also happens more literally when she and Sakamoto are "trapped" by two dogs (although it isn't worth too much as she doesn't have her tools on her).
* ForTheFunnyz: Much of her antics fall under this.
* GeniusSweetTooth: Much like most other children, she loves sweets. ''Unlike'' other children, she's capable of creating robots so advanced that it counts more like creating life itself.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: Is often a victim of Nano's bean cannon.
* InnocentProdigy: She's a typical eight-year-old girl who just happens to be able to make a highly advanced artificial intelligence and a device that lets animals talk like humans. Despite her scientific genius, she's still as childish as any girl her age would be and rarely ever thinks about the consequences of her actions.
* TheKidWithTheRemoteControl: Parodied like anything. Since she created Nano, she has full control over her abilities, most of which serve very little purpose aside from being funny. She'll even add new features to Nano's body without Nano's knowledge.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: She's almost always seen wearing an oversized labcoat, indicating that she's a scientific genius despite her young age.
* NeverMyFault: PlayedForLaughs. She'll always blame Sakamoto for something that she screwed up.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Despite supposedly being a scientist of some kind, she's never actually seen doing any significant scientific work aside from making robots and gadgets solely to amuse herself. She seems to spend most of her day doing typical activities for an eight-year-old, like drawing or reading picture books (though the books she reads do tend to be science-related).
* ReedRichardsIsUseless: The Professor is capable of some truly world-shattering inventions, but she's also only eight years old, and [[InnocentProdigy the application of her genius (and attention span) follows suit]]. This is [[DeconstructedTrope decontructed]] in Chapter 195: she actually does invent something revolutionary, but the girls have ''no idea'' how to make it profitable and get it out into the world.
* SillyMeGesture: She'll often do this when questioned by Nano about the latest weird function Nano has been given.
* SmartPeopleBuildRobots: Nothing quite proves how smart you are than building a RidiculouslyHumanRobot.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Even official translations vary on calling her "Hakase" or "Professor". The Vertical Comics manga uses "Professor", while the Creator/{{Funimation}} dub uses "Hakase". Prompting the confusion is the fact that "Hakase" is the Japanese word for "Professor", but the Japanase manga doesn't use the kanji for "Hakase" (博士), but instead spells it in hiragana (はかせ), which presents "Hakase" as a proper name rather than a title.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Justified because of her age, as speaking in the third person is considered child-like in Japanese.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She loves omelet rice and strawberry juice.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's terrified of dogs, especially Mai's two dogs.

A black cat living with Nano and the Professor. He is able to talk due to a scarf the Professor created.
----
* AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal: His scarf. It was made by the professor to allow him to speak.
* AdaptationOriginConnection: In the anime, [[spoiler:he was originally Nakamura-sensei's cat, formerly named Taisho.]]
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: When his cat nature takes over.
* BerserkButton: Call him "Sakamoto" without the "-san" enough times--something that Professor and Nano seem to have great trouble understanding--and he'll flip his shit. [[TooLongDidntDub Why the official dubs declined to translate the honorific is unknown.]]
* TheChewToy: [[spoiler:He once lived with Nakamura-sensei]], who genuinely cared for him, but had no clue how to feed or take care of a cat. When he moves into Shinonome Laboratories, he's well-cared for, but he has to deal with their frequent antics and the Professor constantly pranking him.
--> "[[LampshadeHanging Damn it! My life sucks no matter where I go!]]"
* FormallyNamedPet: With Nano, at Sakamoto's insistance; he would prefer that the Professor do this, too, but she refuses to listen.
%%* HeadPet: In the second opening.
* HeyYou: He always calls the Professor 'kid/brat' and Nano 'girl'.
* LineOfSightName: It was written on the box he was found in. [[spoiler:His real name is Taisho.]]
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Once in a while he'll let himself fall for one of the Professor's pranks only for said prank to be more than he bargained for.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He tries to avoid succumbing to feline AnimalStereotypes. Badly.
* ParentalSubstitute: Since (as an adult cat) he is biologically older than both Nano and the Professor, he feels he needs to be this and be respected as such. It doesn't work, to say the least.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: As the only adult in the house, he usually insists to the girls that they should refer to him as "Mr. Sakamoto". Only Nano refers to him like that.
* TranslatorCollar: His bandanna affords him speech.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He's afraid of dogs. Well, he ''is'' a cat.

A spacy student who wears an ascot at all times and rides a goat to school. He puts on pretensions of being the eldest son of a wealthy family. However, it's quickly revealed he's the eldest son of a family of farmers (hence the goat). He tends to irritate his classmate [[{{Tsundere}} Misato Tachibana]] with his oblivious nature, causing her to frequently shoot at him. Don't worry, he can take it.
----
* BerserkButton: Don't tell him he can't bring his goat to school.
* BlindWithoutEm: Misato makes the assumption that he is when she accidentally smashes his glasses' lenses, and walks him to class. Unfortunately for her, he isn't. [[PurelyAestheticGlasses They're just for show]].
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Well said!"
* ClassyCravat: Which he only seems to wear to make himself ''look'' classy.
* CloudCuckoolander: He's a little...out there in most of his appearances, and there's also his general habit of acting like a classy nobleman even though he's really from a family of farmers. According to Tachibana's sister in Chapter 109, in middle school he was only marginally better.
* ContemplateOurNavels: The inspiration for his poetry often comes from rather absurd [[NonSequitur non-sequiturs]] involving anything nearby that happens to be occurring at that moment.
-->''([[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext Nano's disembodied hand rockets past.]])''
-->Oh! '''Perhaps it is my right hand, trailing clouds across the blue sky. Sasahara."'' Not bad!
* ExtremeOmniGoat: His goat, Kojirou.
* FullNameBasis: How he addresses Misato Tachibana. The one time he calls her just "Misato," she practically takes it as a love confession.
* HiddenDepths: He's actually proficient in kendo, and he used to train with Tachibana in middle school.
* HotBlooded: During his introductory scene. His goat is really important to him.
* TheLoad: Seems to be this in his duties for the festival committee. Which is, naturally, a source of frustration for Misato.
* MadeOfIron: Kojiro can take anything Misato throws at him, and not even flinch.
* MockMillionaire: He's actually not that rich, he simply acts like it.
* ObliviousToLove: He doesn't ever seem to have a reaction to Misato's aggressive behavior other than polite thanks for when she does stuff for him.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: "Just for show" as he says.
* ShirtlessScene: [[GratuitousEnglish Derisashu~]]. It happens during the [[ArtShift Josei segment]] in which Mio believes [[ShrinkingViolet Nano]] and Sasahara are dating.
* UpperClassTwit: {{Subverted}}. He's actually from a family of farmers and only ''acts'' like he's upper class, though he's still very much a twit.

A high school girl who frequently finds herself angered by the oblivious carefree actions of Sasahara. She expresses her frustration by unleashing an escalating arsenal of weapons ranging from revolvers to missile launchers. There are [[SarcasmMode subtle]] hints that these outbursts may be the result of feelings for Sasahara on Misato's part.
----
* BackpackCannon: Uses one in episode 25.
* BadassAdorable: Not quite on Mio's level, but she still counts, as an adorable tsundere who packs tons of weaponry.
* BerserkButton: Mention her relationship with Kojiro, and you'll be lucky if she doesn't hit you. Say that she should admit her feelings to him, and not even blood relations will protect you from her bazooka. In fact, Kojiro's very existence is a HUGE one.
* BreathlessNonSequitur: Often invokes these in her Tsundere antics by suddenly shouting things like "[=AND WHY SHOULD WE HAVE KIDS?!=]" if anyone so much as ''mentions'' Kojiro. If Chapter 138 is any indication, this is because she goes into long-winded mental tangents, with her non-sequitor being related to the end of said tangent.
* FamilyFriendlyFirearms: Double subverted. Her weapons do look realistic and are more than capable of damaging the scenery, but the characters she does shoot with them are so MadeOfIron that they still come across as this. Despite how realistic her weapons are, her ammo is also non-lethal, as she uses both rubber bullets and blanks filled with flour.
* FieryRedhead: Fire when ready.
* GatlingGood: Gatling ''[[GunPorn goooood]]''.
* GunAndSword: Practices UsefulNotes/{{Kendo}}.
* TheGunslinger: She carries several different types of firearm with her at all times. [[HyperspaceArsenal Where she keeps them is unknown.]]
* HyperspaceArsenal: The girl can pull out guns, grenades, bazookas, and ''freaking cannons'' out of nowhere.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Takes this to ridiculous extremes with Kojiro.
* LaceratingLoveLanguage: Misato frequently attacks her love interest with actual weaponry, as well as anyone who suggests she might have feelings for him.
* LuminescentBlush: Any time she vehemently denies her affections for Kojiro.
* MoreDakka: Her firepower seems to be directly proportional to her embarrassment level.
* SmallGirlBigGun: More like Small Girl, [[GunPorn Several Different Types of Big Gun]].
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Aside from the usual denials of her affections for Kojiro, she either tends to assume a lot of what her friends expect to become of their relationship, or else spills her personal fantasies in her denials.

* BlackBeadEyes: One of the few characters to have those eyes consistently.
** BeadyEyedLoser: Become more prominent after [[spoiler:he temporarily loses his hair]].
* ButtMonkey: He tends to be on the wrong end of many of Nakamura's Nano-traps.
* DelinquentHair: Subverted; despite having a mohawk, he's not a delinquent at all and is very down-to-earth (though Weboshi thinks he ''is'' a delinquent and [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys likes him because of it]]). 325A girl noted for her very large red ribbon that she wears in her hair. She's fond of trying out new places that she reads about, but tends to find the experiences more confusing than enlightening.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Rabbits. Her hair ribbon gives the appearance of rabbit ears and most of her character song is her saying "pyon" (a Japanese onomatopoeia for a rabbit jumping).
* BigWhat: This is practically her [[CharacterCatchphrase catchphrase]]; she lets out a loud, disbelieving "Eeeehhhh?" whenever anything strange happens to her.
* ButtMonkey: To the point to compete with Yukko since the universe seems to enjoy messing with her, putting her in situations where she meets weird people, ends up being scammed, [[spoiler:is abducted by aliens, and even dies after being hit by a really fast-flying beetle]].

----
* ClubStub: With Sekiguchi, at least until it turned out there actually was such a thing as Go-Soccer.
* CoolPlane: Takes a helicopter to school.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Daiku didn't know there was actually a sport called "Go-Soccer" when he invented the club.
%% * NiceGuy
* ObliviousToLove: Downplayed. When he asks Sekiguchi why she bothers with the club when she's clearly not interested, it takes him a bit to realise why she blushes, but he does get it eventually.
* OnlySaneMan: In comparison to most of the cast, ''especially'' in comparison to [[{{LargeHam}} 3/5ths]] of the Go-Soccer Club. This is eventually subverted, as his casual attitude in regards to his ridiculously wealthy background make him just as strange.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: He's a good kid, but he doesn't tend to think things through. He calls in a specialist for what turned out to be a light cut on the head, and he was encouraged to fit himself into a bird stall by Makoto.
* TokenRichStudent: Unlike Sasahara, who acts like a classy nobleman [[MockMillionaire even though he's from a family of farmers]], Daiku really ''is'' from a rich family despite going to the same middle-class high school as everyone else. 373----
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: While he was perfectly willing to hold hands with Izumi when he was a child, his classmates mocking him for it caused Makoto to begin doing household chores and going to school alone in an effort to look mature. He only unconsciously returns to holding Izumi's hand when he gets impressed by her English-speaking ability.
* CovertPervert: When Izumi finds a porn magazine under his futon, he furiously denies that it's his, but he still gets upset when she decides to throw it away.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Even when shocked, his eyes remain shut.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Because Izumi is often clumsy, Makoto has to pick up her slack at home. However, their family in general flips between being foolish and responsible on a daily basis. Chapter 154 reveals that his behavior was born out of a need to look more mature.

* NiceGirl: She and Nano are quite possibly the nicest characters in the manga.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Not normally, but in the TimeSkip chapters. Even after the girls became young women, Izumi looks the same as ever, which Mai lampshades.
* OverlyNervousFlopSweat: To emphasize her timid, nervous personality, she tends to have small drops of sweat fly off of her. In the anime, they even come with their own sound effects.
* SenseiChan: She's far too much of a ShrinkingViolet to be in a teaching job. She took the position of guidance counselor as a way to improve herself, but it hasn't really done much.
* ShrinkingViolet: Unless she's around her younger brother (and even then), she tends to be quite shy and not very good at handling confrontation.
* TeamMom: Izumi has assumed this role regarding her younger brother Makoto, to the point of chastizing him for his rather adult taste in magazines. As revealed in Chapter 142, this is because her mother passed away young, and her father is something of the CloudCuckooLander.
* TearsOfJoy: She wipes at her eyes when Yuuko says that she wants to be a teacher just like her in episode 23.
* TerribleArtist: Her drawings tend to look more like cute and childish versions of whatever they're supposed to represent. And much to Mio's dismay, she also tends to consider Yuuko's drawings "cool".

----
* BadassDecay: Takasaki suffers from this as he is characterized as a hopeless romantic who takes his job to comedically serious lengths. He initially had visibly more respect and gravitas from the students in the classroom.
* BigWhat: Occasionally goes back and forth in an "Eeeehhhh?!" exchange with Annaka, making it a PhraseCatcher.
* CannotSpitItOut: To Izumi. Everytime he tries to even talk to her, he quickly turns into a stuttering mess.
* CovertPervert: He does a mostly good job hiding his crush on Izumi from most people. Though his LargeHam tendencies sometimes weird the crap out of bystanders, they just assume he's wacky and think little else of it. Too bad for him though, Izumi's brother busted him.
* FreudianSlip: When trying to act cool with Izumi he flat out asks her if she has a boyfriend. 499* HeelFaceTurn: Going by chapter 172 of the manga, by the time the Professor is in high school, Nakamura stops trying to kidnap Nano and instead takes up residence in the Shinonome household itself to learn from the Professor directly.
* [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Hoist By Her Own Petard]]: Her attempts at the PoisonedChaliceSwitcheroo both failed because she drank the coffee she herself drugged.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Although she tries to kidnap Nano to learn more about her, she fails so often and so hard at it that it's hard to see her as much of a villain, let alone a threat. According to the TimeSkip chapter of the manga, she quits this trope altogether as she performs a HeelFaceTurn anyway.
* InnocentInnuendo: "I've come to [[MistakenForGay learn more about you]], Shinonome"!
* KindheartedCatLover: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with.]] She likes Taisho, but has absolutely no idea how to treat him.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: She typically wears one at school, due to being a science teacher with MadScientist leanings. When Takasaki runs into her outside of school, he remarks how it's unusual to see her without it.
* MadScientist: It's not really known whether she is in other aspects (though she is implied to have tried to drug students before), but she is so obsessed with kidnapping Nano to figure out how she works that she easily qualifies.
* NotAgain: People's reactions when they learn she's passed out. Implying she's either incredibly careless, or ''has tried to drug students before''.
* PitTrap: Another of her schemes to catch Nano. Predictably it fails.
* PoisonedChaliceSwitcheroo: She inflicts this on herself in Episode 15. ''Twice'' and [[EpicFail no one was there the second time]].
* PrettyFreeloaders: [[spoiler:The timeskip chapters reveal that she eventually starts living in the Shinonome household, still intent on learning more about Nano.]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When it looks like her latest plan to catch Nano has failed, or someone else has fallen prey to her schemes, her usual reaction is to run away before she's caught.
* SeriousBusiness: Everything, especially if it involves Nano.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: To Nano, who she's fascinated by due to her being a robot. Though Nano briefly ''thought'' Nakamura had a crush on her when the teacher said she came to the Shinonome household to learn more about her.
* {{Tsundere}}: Maybe since she gets flustered every time someone calls her cute.
** In the later manga chapters, she's specifically tsundere for [[spoiler:Takasaki]], thanks to [[CosmicPlaything multiple random events]] leading her to think ''he'' has a crush on ''her''.

The school principal who often tells old jokes that no one gets. He has also suplexed a deer.
----
* BaldHeadOfToughness: He's actually completely bald in spite of the Toupee making it look like he's merely balding, and of course, he's one tough customer, as his idea of catching a deer that wandered on school grounds is to literally fight it face-to-face with a bulletproof vest for protection, and winds up pulling off an epic German Suplex on it.
* CannotTellAJoke: Though unlike Yuuko's which are plain terrible, his jokes are simply way outdated.
* CrazyPrepared: Wears a ''bullet-proof vest'' when trying to catch a deer.
* DodgyToupee: It's more prone to wobbling around to and fro (and sometimes fall off altogether) than staying in place. Also, despite what you might initially expect, that's it he's wearing there in the picture to the right! It covers only the sides and back of his head while still leaving the top bald.
* EpicFail: He tries to moonsault during his "fight" with a deer. He fails miserably and lands face-first on the ground.
%% * EyesAlwaysShut
* NoNameGiven: Initially. According to the Vice-Principal in Episode 26, his surname is [[spoiler:Shinonome]].
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: He takes out a deer with a German Suplex.
* WrestlerOfBeasts: Literally. He preforms a German Suplex on a deer.

The Vice Principal of the high school. His sad life is brightened by visits from his little grandson Micchan... until Micchan does something that leaves him sadder than before. Seems to dislike the Principal.
----
* ButtMonkey: Especially around his trollish grandson.
* TheStarscream: He appears to have it out for the principal. [[SeriousBusiness His line of work notwithstanding]].[[note]]Apparently he used to be the school's principal, but was unwillingly demoted due to old age.[[/note]]

Mio's elder sister. An immature young woman fond of playing pranks on people she comes across, especially her sister. She attends college and is skilled at kendo.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Tamamura calls her "Naganon", the same nickname Mio's middle school friend Bera gave her.
* BeyondTheImpossible: In chapter 214, she somehow booby-trapped a ''mandarin'', so its juices could fly right into her sister's eyes.
%% Chapter 215 shows that ''Mio'' booby-trapped the mandarin herself in an attempt to exact revenge on Yoshino's constant pranking.
* [[BigBrotherBully Big Sister Bully]]: Downplayed example to Mio; Yoshino's pranks are far from malicious, but they do annoy the crap out of her sister, who responds with violence.
* CordonBleughChef: [[TheGadfly Deliberately so]], when she makes jam out of fermented fish simply because she thought it would be funny. It tastes so horrible that Mio's [[MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes life flashes before her eyes]] after she eats some.
* CuteBruiser: Being surprisingly strong whilst looking adorable seems to run in the family.
* TheGadfly: She has a great fondness for pulling pranks, especially (though not exclusively) towards her sister Mio.
* GeniusDitz: In kendo, at least, as Misato and Mihoshi think. According to the latter, Yoshino claims training in kendo makes her ''weaker''.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: A quick scene of Mio as a baby shows that Yoshino looks a lot like her mother.

!Nakanojou, Sr., the Daifuku Guy
->'''Voiced by:''' Hirokazu Hiramatsu (Japanese), Doug Jackson (English)

Runs a daifuku stall on the streets of town. He takes selling Daifuku very seriously, and insists on model behavior from the people he hires to be his daifuku mascots. Like his son, he has a natural mohawk. Though his has grown long enough that he can fake a normal hairstyle with it.
----
* AbusiveParents: Mr. Nakanojou's a hardass on Tsuyoshi for anything short of accepting the daifuku business. When Tsuyoshi protests enough, he starts tricking him into doing seemingly benign tasks that are actually malicious to him (see: coating the inside of a daifuku mask with ''paint'' to make Tsuyoshi stuck until he agrees to inherit the business).
%% * EyesAlwaysShut
* SeriousBusiness: Selling daifuku.

A random crow that the Professor brings home. She puts Sakamoto's scarf on it so it can speak.
----
* TheCharmer: Instantly wins over Nano and Professor.
* CleverCrows: After he puts on Sakamoto's scarf, he turns out to be highly intelligent and well-spoken.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Most birds are either realistically drawn or look a bit like marshmallow peeps. This one is ''cone-shaped''.

!Biscuit #2
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/EtsukoKozakura (Japanese), Creator/AlisonViktorin (English)

A robot made by the Professor. He runs on biscuits. An improvement over Biscuit #1, whose head flew off.
----
* TheUnfavorite: He was only made to impress Nano, so he gets neglected often.

!Buddy
->'''Voiced by:''' Zach Bolton (English)

A dog who has sometimes appeared before Yuuko to offer a comforting paw when things are especially rough on the girl. Is sometimes accompanied by a puppy, Kobuddy.
----
* [[ThrowTheDogABone Throw the Humans a Bone]]: Buddy performs this service for Yuuko.

!Hajime Sakurai

Izumi and Makoto's dad. He's a respected writer, but very sleepy all the time. His editor attributes this to Hajime losing his wife at a younger age, and thus having to deal with writing and housework at the same time. As he first appeared in chapter 142, he doesn't get to make an appearance in the anime.
----
* ChildrenRaiseYou: His kids sometimes have to look after him, due to him being so sleepy.
* CloudCuckooLander: A mild example, but he's so sleepy that he sometimes fall into this; he once tried to light his cigarette ''instead'' of his lighter, and is prone to sleeping in the weirdest positions, times and places.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: Due to being overworked.

!Doublecheeseburgirl

A morose girl who has an uncanny resemblance to Yuuko except for her visibly depressed-looking face. Yuuko is mistaken for her before Mio encounters her in person.
----
* FaceRevealingTurn: Does this with Mio and Annaka, who initially think that she is Yuuko.
* FamedInStory: Enough so that Yuuko is mistaken for her by two other girls. Though Yuuko and Mio ''don't'' know about her at first.
* NightmareFace: Annaka, the Professor, and the Crow seem to think so, as they react with fear upon seeing it.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Her face is unusually detailed compared to everyone else. While other characters may ''temporarily'' get more detailed during an ArtShift to convey their changing emotions, this is how Doublecheeseburgirl normally looks.
* OddballDoppelganger: She looks exactly like Yuuko Aioi, right down to her clothes, except that she has a depressed-looking and unusually detailed face. She also speaks with a heavy "hick" accent and frequently does a strange and apparently famous squatting dance to cheer up kids.

[[folder:The Fey Kingdom]]

!King Albert
->'''Voiced by:''' Tamio Ohki (Japanese), Greg Dulcie (English)

Ruler of the Fey Kingdom. He decided to take a trip around the world on a zeppelin, providing Dolph the chance he needed to grab power. He carries one of the two wood cubes which can be used to resurrect an ancient weapon.
----
* PointyEars: Naturally, given his elfin background.

!Princess Starla

Princess of the Fey Kingdom. She holds the second wood cube needed to resurrect an ancient weapon. She manages to keep it hidden from Dolph until his rebellion fails. She holds the Mooks' turning on her and her father against them.
----
* BadBoss: Justifiably so, considering the Mooks helped Dolph in his attempt to usurp the royal family, but Starla gets exceptionally cruel with her management of them.
* PointyEars: Same as her father.
* TrapDoor: She has the Mooks try to entertain her in one sketch. This is the penalty when they fail.
* TrashTalk: Dolph describes her speech as vulgar, contradictory to her appearance.
* [[YouHaveFailedMe You Have Failed To]] [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness Entertain Me]]: Drops her henchmen via TrapDoor when they fail to entertain her.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: Even she was in shock and disbelief over the fact that Dolph died merely by stumbling over his feet.

!Dolph
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TakayaHashi (Japanese), David Novinski (English)

An officer in the Fey Kingdom's army, adopted and raised by King Albert. Despite his grand plans, his attempt at rebellion ultimately fails due to his own clumsiness.
----
* BigBadWannabe: Dolph's after the keys to a superweapon that could give him the power to rule the world, he successfully executes a plan to capture the king and princess, and he has an airship loaded with henchmen at his beck and call. Then he abruptly [[DeathByFallingOver trips over his own feet and dies]], and his army surrenders to the princess on the spot.
* DeathByFallingOver: "His attempt at rebellion ultimately fails due to his own clumsiness" is ''not'' an exaggeration.
%% * LaughingMad
* SelfDisposingVillain: He ends up being the cause of his own end through a single act of clumsiness.

The men who serve the king and princess on the Fey Kingdom Zeppelin. They wear identical uniforms of slacks with green jackets and caps, and are distinguished by the numbers on their hats. Number Eight is usually the centerpiece in skits featuring the zeppelin.
----
* [[BlownAcrossTheRoom Blown Across The Corridor]]: In Episode 21, Number 8 gets blasted so hard that he ricochets against the walls until he goes full turn and hits Mio in the back.
* DeathAsComedy: Their individual deaths tend to be PlayedForLaughs more often than not.
* DecapitatedArmy: The moment that Dolph gets himself killed, they immediately surrender and the rebellion against the Fey Kingdom is over.
* EliteMook: Number 8 is always the one that inadvertently snaps Yuuko into reality.
** Also, every mook who doesn't have a number on their cap. [[RedShirt In theory]].
* EpicFail: Word of advice: if you find yourself in possession of the two artifacts that might make you king of the land, ''don't put them on the sill of a window of a moving airship''.
* FaceFramedInShadow: Even if the viewer can see beneath their green caps, their eyes are never visible.
* MassOhCrap: After [[TooDumbToLive Dolph]] accidentally killed himself.
* NoNameGiven: Some of them are given nicknames, the rest are given numbers as names, but neither of them have actual names.
%% * ThirteenIsUnlucky
* RedshirtArmy: Well, Green Jacket, that is.
** MauveShirt: Number 8. Case in point, he's the only mook to take on [[OneManArmy Mio]] and live.
* YouAreNumberSix: The only way to distinguish individual mooks is by the number on their hats or, in the case of ranked or nicknamed members, the kanji. They refer to themselves by their numbers, too.

[[folder:Helvetica Standard]]

[[ShowWithinAShow A manga often seen being read by characters]], as well as an actual manga by Keiichi Arawi. Some episodes have ''Helvetica Standard'' segments of their own.

With the exception of Pino, none of these names are "official", merely descriptive. Character entries are reserved for characters who have appeared in more than one ''Helvetica Standard'' sketch.

!The Clueless Shinigami

A Shinigami who doesn't understand how to read the atmosphere of a situation. Once had his scythe stolen by the Poverty-Stricken Tengu.
----
* IDoNotSpeakNonVerbal: The first ''Helvetica Standard'' skit has him asking what "KY"[[note]]"Kuuki Yomenai", the inability to read social situations; translated as Clueless in some fansubs and translated as "Insensitive" in the English dub[[/note]] refers to. His captain answers "You."
* {{Shinigami}}: Though he more closely resembles TheGrimReaper.
