Chao Lingshen is class 3A's top scoring and [[RenaissanceMan multitalented]] student. She runs the successful business Chao Bao Zi, is talented in martial arts, a member of the Eastern medicine research group and the head of the Mahora quantum physics department.
----
* TheAce: She's good at everything. She's a key member of several local ''university'' clubs (including the quantum physics one), a successful entrepreneur, proficient martial artist and deadly mage, all at the [[ImprobableAge ripe old age of fourteen]].
* AnimeChineseGirl: She [[AllChinesePeopleKnowKungFu can do kung fu]], speaks with an accent, has the name, the clothes and the hair, but may not be the genuine article.
* AntiVillain: Part of the reason Negi and his crew have a tough time dealing with Chao is she never does anything evil, going out of her way to prevent casualties and minimizing damage as a whole. The worst thing you can say is that her plan, while benevolent as a whole, is a major inconvenience to the main party and a bit short-sighted. Negi has such a difficult time dealing with the benevolence of Chao's plan that he ultimately decides to declare ''himself'' the villain to justify his actions.
* ArcVillainess: She was the primary antagonist of the Mahorafest arc with Negi's primary struggle being that there isn't a particularly convincing case that she's doing anything ''wrong.'' Her upstanding moral behavior, refusal to lie and genuine good intentions leave the group conflicted about how to handle her.
* AttackDrone: She included four of these in her PoweredArmor for the climax of the Festival Arc.
* BackForTheFinale: [[spoiler:Chao returned to her time after the School Festival Arc, but she came back for the final arc with an Eva from a different timeline to return Asuna to the moment she was sealed.]]
* BadassAdorable: The cute AnimeChineseGirl turns out to be a powerful descendant of the main character and the main antagonist of the second major arc. She puts up a hell of a fight.
* BareFistedMonk: At the time of Mahorafest, Chao is about as skilled as Ku Fei in Chinese Martial Arts. She uses Hokuryuu Shourinken, Northern Shaolin style. Turns out she's a KungFuWizard though. She only uses her magic when Negi destroys her Cassiopeia.
* BeamSpam: During her fight with Negi, she has small floating drones flying around spamming attacks at Negi.
* BecomingTheMask: Initially, Chao only travelled back in time and entered Mahora to change the past and fulfill her goals, but when Negi asks her whether [[WasItAllALie the time she spent with her classmates was just part of her disguise]], she admits that the bonds she created and the happy time she spent with her friends weren't part of her plan.
* BlushSticker: She has two permanently rosy spots on her cheeks. While it'd seem that it is meant to make her cuter and [[OnlySixFaces different]] from other characters, it turns out to be the only normally visible part of the FacialMarkings from her DeadlyUpgrade.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: She likes to play the role of the Boke. Even Setsuna gets to make Tsukkomi on her.
* BookSmart: As expected from a genius girl, Chao is ranked number 1 student in the test results of the entire school.
* BrainyBrunette: She's a black-haired TeenGenius with ImprobablyHighIQ.
* BreakThemByTalking: Played with. Since she is well-meaning, she offers to let Takahata and Negi join her side because not doing so and stopping her could mean they are doing evil things. She's well aware though that they don't agree with her methods, the talk is simply a way for her to confuse them for a moment, so they will show an opening which she intends to abuse by knocking them out.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: ''Self-described'' MadScientist? Yes. TheAce who can do ''anything'', to the point of apparently inventing TimeTravel? Yep.
* ButNowIMustGo: After her defeat, she returns to her own time, despite the insistence of Negi. She nearly subverts this by considering staying in the current time period, but then quickly says she's going back, causing most of the people present to facefault.
* CelibateEccentricGenius: Chao is brilliant and one of the few girls who never engages in any kind of romantic behavior with anyone.
* ChekhovsGunman: She's quite unimportant and unrelated to the plot with Negi noting he needs to get to know her better when suddenly she takes center stage during Mahorafest.
* TheChessmaster: Chao is always a few steps ahead of Negi's party, even predicting they'd use Eva's resort to train and prepare them for the final day of the festival and flings them a week into the future as a result. She even predicted they'd escape said trap, though she admits it had her panicked.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: Her futuristic battlesuit with a TimeTravel mechanism built in makes her one of the strongest combatants present.
* CombatPragmatist: Exploits Takahata's love for his students to beat him in combat. Whenever faced with an opponent that she can't beat one-on-one, even with her battlesuit, she makes use of her time machine to level the playing field.
* ConquerorFromTheFuture: She doesn't look like one at first since her only stated goal is to break TheMasquerade, but then you see her character notes where she has a particular fondness for world domination.
* CrazyPrepared: Chao instilled a time lock trap on Evangeline's resort, figuring that Negi's party would use it, and when they escaped that trap, she simply executed her plan sooner. She even had a secret weapon that she didn't use: [[spoiler:The Springfield Family Tree]].
* CurbStompBattle:
** The first time she and Negi fight, Negi is still too reluctant to fight her and she knocks him down with just one punch. Her usage of Cassiopeia also gave her an absolute advantage from the start.
** When Setsuna and Kaede intercept Chao right before she finishes off Negi, she uses time stop abilities to show they can't do a thing to her.
** Later, she steps it up and adds real violence to the equation against Setsuna and Asuna during the climax.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Whatever happened to Chao in the past, she was determined to change history and went back in time to expose magic to the world. She, as a supposed Martian, talked of a tragedy she was trying to prevent, which gave Negi enough hints to figure out that Mundus Magicus, which was inscribed on Mars, was about to collapse. Chao likely had to suffer from the consequences of this catastrophe.
* DeadlyUpgrade: She's incapable of using magic properly, so at the end of her fight with Negi, she activates some odd ability that normally seals her power and instead uses it to force magic into her body, which causes immense pain.
* {{Determinator}}: If it wasn't obvious enough, this is a trait she definitely inherited from Negi. If you want to stop her, you need to AppealToForce.
* EvilGloating: After Chao trapped Negi and his friends and sent them to the future, leaving them unable to stop her plans, she explains in a video message in full detail how she managed to achieve her plan to expose magic. It backfired though, as Negi managed to travel back in time, and now they knew all about her plans.
* FlashStep: The first time she fights Negi, she randomly appears behind him several times. When Setsuna and Kaede attack Chao together, they also are utterly confused by her movements. It's only because Negi has knowledge of Cassiopeia's capabilities and that he was able to observe from a distance, that he notices that Chao doesn't use Shundo or Shukuchi. She uses time jumps and pseudo-time stops to appear at a different place.
* GodzillaThreshold: She has a secret weapon in store at Mahorafest which she claims would enable her to secure a certain victory, but would be far too dangerous to use. [[spoiler: It's a paper copy of her family tree, which supposedly shows who Negi eventually marries. Sure enough, Negi's BattleHarem falls to infighting over it as soon as it is revealed. Chao escapes in the confusion.]]
* GracefulLoser: After Negi defeated Chao in battle, Negi technically didn't stop her yet, so long as Hakase would still be able to complete the ceremony. Negi however used all his strength to defeat Chao and lost consciousness, [[GravityIsAHarshMistress which would have killed him from their current height.]] Chao was willing to use her body and the rest of her mana to [[VillainsDyingGrace shield Negi and save his life]] if Satsuki hadn't saved the two of them with her flying food stall. It also turns out that Chao changed the effect of the Forced Recognition Magic, if Negi defeated her, from "exposing magic to the world" to "peace without hatred or sadness in the world for one day".
* HartmanHips: Only motherly Chizuru has hips larger than Chao, while every other one of Chao's measurements are on the petite to average side.
* HeroAntagonist: She is the primary antagonist of the Mahorafest arc, but she's so well-meaning and subdued in her methods -- [[ThouShaltNotKill refusing to kill]] or [[WillNotTellALie lie]] -- even other characters aren't too sure whether they were right in trying to stop her. The only reason Negi opposes her in the end is because she absolutely refuses to explain her actions, despite the fact that he'd agree with her if she did. She's a pretty good sport when she loses too and there are hints that she was fine with either outcome.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Chao tells us what her plans are early on and she's not lying. However, she's withholding a lot of crucial information and her attitude makes it difficult to tell what she's trying to accomplish.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: Gave Negi the time-machine as a way of side-stepping having to fight him by way of jumping him to a point where she'd already won. Negi not only figures out how to use it to jump back to it but masters usage of it enough to fight Chao one-on-one.
* IAmNotLeftHanded:
** In her first fight against Negi, Negi initially assumes Chao is clearly weaker than him, since she doesn't use magic and supposedly can't control ki as well as Ku Fei. He quickly notices though that she is at the least as good as Ku in terms of speed and power. She never showed how good she really was.
** After Negi is able to counter Chao's StoryBreakerPower and ends up destroying her Cassiopeia, Chao proceeds to unleash a [[MoreDakka Bullet Hell of time travel bullets]] at Negi, who {{No Sell}}s them and urges Chao to give up, [[TemptingFate since, unlike him, she can't use magic.]] Chao then decides to release the seals on her body and shows him that she ''is'' able to use magic.
* ImprobablyHighIQ: According to the author, her IQ is around 300. "[[RuleOfFunny Maybe even seriously]]."
* {{Irony}}: A lot of the arguments and statements made about Chao and her plan look different by the end of the Magic World arc. For example, Yue's arguments to Negi about the time period she picked suddenly don't hold much weight nor Negi's upset speech about the tattoos that give Chao magic. For the former, the collapse of the Magic World is a far bigger disaster than WWII and for the latter, Magia Erebea makes Negi's concern about Chao using dangerous powers laughable.
* JustBetweenYouAndMe: Subverted. Chao ''does'' explain her plans... but only after she already sent Negi and his friends one week forward when it's all over. What she didn't see coming was that Negi was still able to travel back in time with the machine she gave him to trap him in the future in the first place.
* KidFromTheFuture: [[spoiler:Chao is Negi's descendant from roughly a century in the future, though the rest of the details of her lineage are never revealed.]]
* LargeHam: She actually plays along with Ayaka's Mages vs Martian Robots game and shows up with a gigantic projection in the sky to play the evil last boss, EvilLaugh included. The [[MoodWhiplash super serious mood changes]] though when Chao [[EnforcedPlug casually mentions]] that the robot army was sponsored by the engineering department and her food chain.
* LamarckWasRight: [[spoiler: Her magical trigger is nearly identical to Negi's own, despite the fact that Negi is long dead in the timeline Chao comes from.]]
* LovesSecrecy: She sure likes to withhold important information. She never lies about her goals, but she only tells people enough about her motives to leave them wondering.
* LukeYouAreMyFather: Claims to be Negi's time traveling descendant from the future. People do not take it seriously. At first.
* MadScientist: She and Hakase claim they sold their souls to science.
* MoreDakka: One of her attacks doesn't even need a gun to do it!
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: At one point, it's complained that she's [[LampshadeHanging adding in way too many traits]] to her character profile, notably claiming to be a time traveling martian descended from Negi. It's true, though. Technically.
* PetTheDog: Considering Chao doesn't lie, when she says or does something nice, it's genuine.
** When Setsuna questions Chao about her motives after using Cassiopeia for the first time, she openly says she gifted Negi the time machine because she wanted him to have fun and relax for once. Negi was also able to visit all of his students and do his duties as a teacher during the Mahora Festival, exactly because he could travel back in time.
** When the rest of 3-A wants to watch the finals of the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament live, Chao orders Mana to let them pass, despite the fact that she earlier gave the order to not let anyone past her who can't provide an entrance ticket.
** After Negi defeated Chao in single combat, she still could have pulled off her plan to expose magic, as Negi would have had to stop Hakase. However, she built in a condition to change the ritual's function to "World Peace for one day", if Negi managed to beat her.
** Chachamaru, the {{Magitek}} AI robot Chao created with Hakase, is left with Chao's final words stating that Chachamaru is already her own individual and can live her life however she wants. She also gifts Chachamaru a KillSat from the future, after Chachamaru establishes a Pactio with Negi.
** After Chao leaves, Negi finds a note she left behind in the class register, encouraging him to keep walking his path.
* PlayingWithFire: After Chao releases the seals on her body, she can use magic and all her spells are fire-themed. She is even able to use the High Ancient spell of Fire, ''Ourania Phlogosis'', the strongest known fire spell, which completely obliterates Negi's barriers.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Negi opposes her plan during the Mahorafest arc ultimately because she refuses to explain what her goal is or accept (or even ''discuss'') some form of alternate solution. She might well've gotten what she wanted if she only spent ten minutes explaining what was going on instead of trying to brute-force it.
* PoweredArmor: She wears a set of armor that allows her to fly and supports her Cassiopeia. There are also gloves that allow her to use a disabling electric punch.
* PutOnABus: After her arc, she returns to the future. [[spoiler:[[TheBusCameBack We see her again after Asuna woke up after 130 years asleep.]]]]
* RenaissanceMan: She can cook, runs a business taking in hundreds of millions of yen, is an excellent hand to hand fighter, helped develop a genuine AI, appears to have invented time travel, is a talented tactician, has good knowledge of Eastern medicine and is a highly competent mage.
* SarcasticConfession: When she gives out her real identity as a martian, Setsuna gives her a DopeSlap.
--->'''Chao:''' [[LampshadeHanging Hahaha, if something sounds too wild, nobody will believe you.]]
* SaveScumming: Her time-machine allows her to do this.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Her goal is to reveal the existence of magic to prevent some tragedy she refuses to elaborate on, though she hints it's merely a personal tragedy rather than something of massive proportions. Turns out it was an attempt to avoid the collapse of the Magic World and the war that would follow it.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: [[spoiler: It's a blink and you'll miss it moment, but in one of the earlier volumes, she exhibits similar quirks that Negi possesses, furthering her claim of being his descendant.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Her battlesuit allows her to infuse her punches with electricity. She is able to knock Negi down after just one well-placed punch.
* SlipknotPonytail: During a battle with Negi, one of her hairbuns come undone.
* SmartPeopleBuildRobots: The #1 student in the grade (and likely all of Mahora Academy), and one of the two people that helped build Chachamaru.
* SmugSuper: Between her robot army, time travel, battlesuit, and having made arrangements to get Negi out of the picture, Chao has a perpetual grin on her face since she shows there's no way anyone can ever beat her. When Negi displays that he can work her time machine for combat, she subtly stops grinning and looks genuinely irritated at the realization she might lose.
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** Chao's presence, her creating Chachamaru and the information she was willing to reveal to Negi gave him enough hints to figure out the fate of Mundus Magicus (Inverse Mars). Negi having this crucial information completely caught Kurt Gödel off guard and ruined his plans to make Negi join his side. Chao's tech was also used by Chisame to support her hacking, as she used it to hack the Megalomesembrian security system.
** Also counts as a PetTheDog moment: After Chachamaru, the robot Chao created with Hakase, made a Pactio with Negi, she was given an artifact from 100 years in the future. Chao gave Chachamaru a gigantic ''KillSat'' that is so powerful that it could level the ruins of Ostia, which becomes a valuable element in helping Ala Alba.
** [[spoiler:Chao again helps her friends by bringing Asuna, who woke up from a 130-year-long sleep and was all alone, back to the moment she was just sealed. Asuna was thus able to stay by Negi's and her friends' side.]]
* StealthMentor: In a way, she was this to Negi. Her organizing the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament gave Negi more reason to train harder and become stronger, even though she technically used the tournament footage for her plans to expose magic. She also made Negi take a side and do things he himself would consider evil, since Chao is possibly doing things for a greater cause. Even in battle, she lectures him that he is too sympathetic towards his enemies and that words can get someone only to a certain point, making him use force to stop her. Despite losing to Negi and him ruining her plan that she spent two years of her life on, she left satisfied, and her parting words to Negi were words of encouragement to keep moving forward.
* TakeOverTheWorld: World Domination is listed as one of her ''likes''. She could probably pull it off if she really wanted to.
* ThouShaltNotKill: She makes sure none of her robots or allies kill anyone, giving them stripping beams and (when that proves insufficient to convince people to stop), time-displacement bullets.
* TimeMaster: She can induce time stop effects, travel back and forward in time and possesses bullets that launch the target into the future.
* TimeStandsStill: With a series of rapid time jumps, she can make a pseudo time stop effect.
* ToUnmasqueTheWorld: Her master plan in the Mahorafest arc is to use the power of the World Tree to forcibly eliminate the WeirdnessCensor of the {{Muggles}} and publicize the footage she took of the martial arts tournament in the internet so people who see it acknowledge the flashy attacks as magic.
* {{Ubermensch}}: She rejects the status quo set by mages and attempts to force them into the open to prevent more tragedies. She avoids causing permanent damage in the process. Finally, while it doesn't come up in the story she really likes world conquest but hates the idea of one superpower bullying lesser powers.
* UnableToCry: Only PlayedForLaughs. During Chao's farewell party, her classmates bring up that they never see her cry... and then proceed to tickle her until she can't help but do so. Considering her tragic past, she may be past the point of crying.
* VerbalTic: [[AnimeChineseGirl True to type]], she overuses the emphatic particles ''yo'' and ''ne''.
* VillainsNeverLie: Related to WillNotTellALie, Chao is very good at catching people off guard with surprising truths, but she still keeps many things to herself.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Chao is well aware of the chaos she is causing for the next ~10 years, should she succeed in exposing magic to the world, but when confronted by Mahora's teachers, she states that they could fix the corruption, inequality and injustice in the world if the world learned about magic. In hindsight, she wanted to prevent the collapse of Mundus Magicus and the war that followed. While Takahata agrees with her motives, he doesn't agree with her methods to use force (albeit nonlethal force), and Negi ultimately opposes her because she (very intentionally) doesn't tell him about her past and her exact reasons. [[spoiler:Negi does eventually do what she intended to do and expose magic to the public, but he does it in a less radical way.]]
* WillNotTellALie: States numerous times that "Martians don't tell lies." This doesn't prevent her from ''withholding'' all sorts of information.
* YouAreTooLate: Tricks Negi's group into being stuck a week in the future and leaves a gloating message about it, but they manage to undo it by using residual magic left at the World Tree.

[[folder:Evangeline Athanasia Katherine [=McDowell=]]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YukiMatsuoka (Japanese) and Creator/LauraBailey (English)
!!!'''Portrayed by:''' Sakina Kuwae, Hitomi Miwa (adult)
[[quoteright:292:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_8633.JPG]]

Evangeline is the first antagonist of the series and is an ancient and extremely powerful vampire stuck in the form of a ten-year-old girl. Thanks to Negi's father, she has been bound into the Mahora school grounds without any of her magical powers.\
\
While Nagi initially intended to let her go in a few years, he first forgot to let her go and then vanished, leaving her both bitter and extremely bored. She picks a fight with Negi to relieve her frustration and potentially break the curse on her herself. Some time later, she becomes Negi's master and primary magic teacher.
----
* AboveGoodAndEvil: When being serious and not having her NobleDemon attitude played for laughs, she expresses no belief in the idea of moral behavior nor particular fondness for genuine villainy. This is the foundation of Magia Erebea, which tosses aside concepts like moral values by embracing both that which is considered good and that which is considered evil and converting them into your own strength.
* ActionFashionista: Along with being an uber-powerful sorceress, Eva loves dressing up fancy. When she gets bored, she dresses up other people too. She also declares that Asuna must wear black, frilly ElegantGothicLolita clothing after deciding to make her a "videogame miniboss".
* AllPowerfulBystander: She's easily one of the most powerful characters around, but since she has no personal stakes in what is going on she's content to merely watch the plot unfold with sheer amusement. At first it seems like she's doing this because she's under a PowerLimiter, but when that comes off briefly during either her initially villainous arc, at the end of Kyoto or at the end of Mahorafest she's more interested in enjoying herself than escaping or doing anything noteworthy.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Evangeline is known as an infamous evil mage and she herself claims that's true, but even when she's an antagonist, she doesn't act truly evil and soon becomes a MentorInSourArmor for Negi. It's up to interpretation whether her villain history is an exaggeration or being trapped in a school for years did some good to her conduct.
* ApatheticStudent: Quite a bit {{justified|trope}} in her case. Evangeline is a centuries old vampire who has been cursed to [[CompulsorySchoolAge attend middle school]]. By the time the series begins, she's been repeating the same school years for 15 years in a row and is outright sick of it. She habitually skips class out of boredom until Negi beats her in their fight.
* TheArchmage: She's ancient and well experienced to the point that she can oneshot a demon god. The story kept upping her implied level of ability throughout the story that by the end she's shown to be capable of taking out [[spoiler:all of Cosmo Entelechia]] with a custom forced spell, though it takes a while to cast.
* ArcVillainess: Of the appropriately titled Evangeline arc. She antagonizes Negi to get his blood and remove the curse that his father set upon her, driving her to attack and brainwash some of his students before going after him. After her defeat, she pulls a HeelFaceTurn of sorts and becomes Negi's mentor from then on.
* BadassAdorable: There are only one or possibly two characters in the story that can match her in a fight by themselves, the [[PhysicalGod Lifemaker]] and [[WorldsStrongestMan Nagi]]. This despite the fact that she's described as looking like a doll.
* BadassBoast: She's one of the most feared mages in two worlds, and ''won't'' let anyone forget it.
-->''(To Chigusa)'' Keh heh heh! You chose your opponent poorly, woman! What you're seeing is a spell that creates near-absolute-zero temps in a 150-square-foot area! Even [[CosmicHorror that big nasty]] won't be able to avoid it. For lo, I am the vampire Evangeline... the "Dark Evangel"!! Look upon my magics, ye mighty, and despair...!! ''[[EvilLaugh MWAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!]]''
** The English dub version of the above boast also stands out:
-->'''Evangeline:''' You've met your match, you four-eyed hack! My name is vampire Evangeline! The most powerful Shinso vampire in the world! ''[[EvilLaugh AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!]]''
* BadassCape: She occasionally wears a ragged, long black cloak.
* BathtubBonding: When Negi wants to consult with her, she has him stripped and tossed into the bath with her. She makes a few vampy moves for shits and giggles before they begin discussing his issues over dinner.
* BeautifulDreamer: When Negi nurses a sick Eva, he thinks she looks cute when she's sleeping.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** She's called in to bail out Negi during the end of Kyoto. She oneshots the demon that he was unable to even damage and smacks away Fate Averruncus without a second thought. Her price for assistance? Konoemon has to stamp a permission slip allowing her to be out every ''five seconds'' until she comes back the next day after enjoying herself seeing the sights.
** [[spoiler:During the climax of the assault on the Gravekeeper's Palace, she makes her appearance just in time to save Negi and Fate.]]
* BigFancyHouse: Owns ''three'' such houses -- her cabin, her house in a bottle, and the even bigger Lebens Schuld Castle.
* ABirthdayNotABreak: On her tenth birthday, she was transformed into an undying vampire. The blood on her mouth and hands imply she possibly killed her own family because of the transformation.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: When she taps into her ''vampire'' power(s) rather than the usual {{magic}}; she invokes the look for the terror factor when she decides to "rough up" the newly-arrived Anya, who had just been told that Negi and Ala Alba are being trained by [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast the infamous Maga Nosferatu]].
* BloodbathVillainOrigin: When she first awoke as a vampire on her tenth birthday, she killed someone and ended up with blood on her hands and mouth. This has clearly shaped how she thinks of herself as a monster.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: Evangeline is CrazyPrepared enough to realize that even ''she'' can't rely on her vampiric powers ''all'' the time; enough so for her to learn and '''master''' the martial art of UsefulNotes/{{Aikido}} from Morihei Ueshiba (the creator of said martial art) himself, [[BeenThereShapedHistory whom she casually refers to as "that old geezer I met when I came to Japan 80 years ago."]]
* BreakoutCharacter: Eva's popularity in this series would lead to her becoming a more central figure in [[Manga/UQHolder the next one]].
* BrokenBird: She's sarcastic, hostile and unpleasant, but it's stated that her harsh life has shaped her into the person she is and hinted that deep down she really wants to be innocent again.
* BroughtDownToBadass: At first it seems like she's just BroughtDownToNormal, but when Mahorafest's tournament rolls around she proves that she's an excellent martial artist and has great ability with RazorFloss. She stomps martial artists over and over until she comes up against Setsuna and still nearly beats her with no real magic powers to utilize.
* BurnTheWitch: She mentions how she had to flee witch hunts in the past and indicates that a few times she wasn't too successful in escaping. Thanks to being largely indestructible she's not dead, but that must have hurt.
* ByronicHeroine: A card-carrying example. Morally neutral, largely concerned with personal interests, disrespect of common authority, jaded and cynical, attractive, having a DarkAndTroubledPast, an introspective loner, an exile, and to top it off, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking a vampire]].
* CardCarryingVillain: Eva insists over and over that she's a villain to the core. Her classmates are convinced it's not quite that simple.
* CapeWings: She can form a cloak out of bats and use it to fly. Or maybe she's doing it for effect. [[LargeHam Would fit her character.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Eva keeps her distance from the rest of Class 3-A initially, but it dwindles greatly over the course of the series, and even begins to defend them from potential harm.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: The first time we see her, Evangeline is a powerful but somewhat SquishyWizard who requires Chachamaru to guard her. In contrast, later appearances (her combat training of Negi, her illusionary duel with Setsuna, Negi's Magia Erebea admission test) shows her as an uber-powerful all-round KungFuWizard who can still massacre her opponents without magic, and one of the most powerful characters in the series, prompting Chamo to theorize that she was just screwing around when she was fighting Negi. This can be somewhat explained by the author's notes showing Evangeline wasn't originally planned to be a vampire or older than Negi - just a trained magic-using assassin with a family grudge. Evidently she got carried along with the scope of the plot.
* ClingyJealousGirl: A [[ShipTease (possibly)]] non-romantic version. Eva gets pissed when Albireo offers Negi to study magic under him. Albireo openly admits he just wants to make Eva go mad with jealousy by stealing her cute apprentice.
* CompleteImmortality: As a vampire, Eva is immune to aging and she has fast regeneration that allows her body to quickly recover from any wound it receives.
* CompulsorySchoolAge: Invoked by Nagi. Apparently he thought it would be funny to make her live the school life she never had. Then he forgot about coming back and undoing the curse.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: Nagi "damned" her to ''school'', though more because she was annoying than because she had done anything wrong.
* CorruptionOfAMinor: She seems to have a great deal of fun pretending to be TheVamp around Negi and darkening his world view, though the story presents it as not being that bad.
* CruelToBeKind: Several of the trials she forces on Negi and his friends are with what she considers their best interests in mind. In her tournament fight with Setsuna, Eva tries forcing Setsuna to give up her sword so Setsuna can attain normal happiness while it's still possible for her. Also, she subjects Asuna to TrainingFromHell in order to make Asuna give up on the journey to the Magic World because Eva knows Asuna would ''not'' want to go there if she still had her lost memories.
* CurbStompBattle:
** Took down a high-level demon with one (albeit very powerful) spell at the end of the Kyoto Arc, and shortly thereafter kicked Fate's ass. He promptly got the hell out of there.
** In the preliminaries of the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, she quickly sweeps off the feet of the unlucky guy that recovered from Takahata's curbstomping and dared to touch her shoulder. She then pins him down and advises him to not get up.
** After she learns from Albireo Imma that Nagi is alive, she is so distracted in her thoughts that she didn't even pay attention to her unlucky opponent and knocks him out with one full-force punch in the gut. [[BadassNormal And this is her in her weakest condition.]]
** After thrashing [[spoiler:Cosmo Entelechia]] with normal combat methods, she gets bored and one-shots the lot of them with a massive ice-and-lightning vortex spell shaped like creeping vines.
* CuteLittleFangs: She has little fangs at some points according to the moon cycle. After a full moon passes, they vanish.
* TheCynic: Having experienced much of the darker side of the world for hundreds of years, she's easily the most cynical character in the story.
* CynicIdealistDuo: The cynic to Negi's idealist. A large part of their dynamic is their respective attitudes rubbing off and subtly influencing the other.
* DarkActionGirl: She displays a tough, distant attitude mixed liberally with cynicism and halfhearted attempts to corrupt Negi and later Asuna while keeping almost everyone at arm's length. She mellows out quite a bit, but refuses to admit it.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was turned into a vampire at age ten, it's implied she may have slaughtered her own family in vampiric bloodlust, was left to fend for herself in medieval times and couldn't stay anywhere for long because she would be burned at the stake if people realized she doesn't age. She lived centuries in seclusion, but {{vampire hunter}}s kept coming after her and she killed them to survive.
* DaywalkingVampire: She used to have a weakness to sunlight, but eventually overcame it as she grew in power. She even has "High Daylight Walker" as one of her ''many'' titles and epithets.
* DeadpanSnarker: When the likes of Chachamaru or Albireo aren't keeping her off balance, she tends towards acting bored and sarcastic.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Puns aside, Evangeline becomes friendlier with the cast as time goes on, even though she'd never cop to it.
* DeusExMachina:
** She saves the Negi party from the BigBad and the Demon God he unsealed at the end of the Kyoto Arc.
** The Magic World arc ends with [[spoiler:Evangeline showing up to rescue Negi in the same way she did in Kyoto. She proceeds to singlehandedly one-shot Cosmo Entelechia by encasing them in ice.]]
* TheDreaded: "Maga Nosferatu", "Queen of the Night", "Visitation of Woe"... the very name of Evangeline alone can strike fear in a mage's heart. Does not apply to middle school or ten-year-old magi, even if they're supposedly her enemy.
* DrillSergeantNasty: She can be convinced, [[{{Determinator}} with effort]], to instruct someone in magecraft and/or combat. She ''cannot'' be convinced to [[TrainingFromHell be gentle about it]].
* ElegantGothicLolita: Eva usually wears frilly Victorian-stylized dresses when not wearing her school uniform. This, combined with her small stature and long blonde hair, makes her look like a doll.
* ElementalEyeColors: She's a mage who uses very powerful ice spells and has blue eyes to match her element.
* EmbarrassingNickname:
** "Kitty", as Albireo calls her. He derived it from her second middle name -- "Katherine" -- specifically [[TheGadfly to mess with her]].
** And there's the one that Jack Rakan came up with: "[[Really700YearsOld Loli Grandma]]". This one got her mad enough that she didn't bother watching the area of effect on her most powerful spell and nearly turned him into an icicle.
* EnergyAbsorption: She invented Magia Erebea, which allows her to cast a spell, compress it and then devour it. It's quite dangerous to humans, but since she's a vampire her soul is more robust.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite her past as an infamous criminal mage and murderer, Eva made it a point to not kill women and children.
* EvilLaugh: Quite a few times, such as when she killed the demon god. Apparently, it's really fun.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: At the height of her infamy and power, she normally wandered around in the form of a tall, beautiful blond. Now when people see her they're more likely to think she looks like a cute doll.
* {{Expy}}:
** Being a small blonde girl, she bears a strong physical resemblence to [[Manga/LoveHina Sarah McDougal]] from Akamatsu's previous work. She even has a similar last name to boot.
** Personality-wise she takes after [[VideoGame/{{Touhou}} Remilia Scarlet]], being a centuries old vampire with some level of immaturity. Like Remilia she's also a force to be reckoned with.
* FallenPrincess: In her backstory, she lived like a spoiled princess at a castle until her tenth birthday where she was turned into a vampire and had to leave the castle. She was then left homeless, shunned and persecuted, even becoming a wanted criminal. Things slightly improve after Nagi seals her at the school and she learns to enjoy mentoring Negi and his students in magic.
* FamedInStory: Anyone that's familiar with magic knows of Evangeline's infamy.
* FemmeFatalons: She's a vampire with long, red nails.
* FilleFatale: She makes attempts at seduction despite her childlike body, but they fail miserably.
* FreudianExcuse: When Eva was a child, she was turned into a vampire against her will and it's suggested that she got labeled as evil because she kept running into {{vampire hunter}}s and she [[KillingInSelfDefense killed them in self-defense]].
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Asuna tries to defend Eva's past crimes by claiming circumstances forced her to become a murderer to survive. Eva, for her part, rejects Asuna's sympathy as she finds those excuses to be frivolous; her first murder was committed out of hatred for the one who vampirized her and she doesn't believe killing {{vampire hunter}}s in self-defense is any more justifiable. In Eva's opinion, her own reputation as an evil monster is well-deserved.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Despite her claims to the contrary and antisocial attitude, she's largely harmless [[BullyingADragon provided you don't try to pick a fight with her.]]
* FromNobodyToNightmare: She was dropped into a world hostile to magic and the supernatural at the age of ten with no family, no money and no power. She clawed her way to the top and became so powerful that nothing is a threat to her anymore. [[TheDreaded Now, her name alone inspires terror.]]
* FullNameBasis: Any classmate she isn't close to (which is to say most of them), she'll call them by their full name.
* GamerChick: She has a suspicious fondness for talking about things in RPG terms.
* GeniusBookClub: Once seen reading the illustrative ''A Day, a Dog'' by Gabrielle Vincent.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfWoman: Eva gets annoyed when she hears Setsuna's anxious worries about [[NoPlaceForAWarrior what is for her to do outside of sword fighting]], calls her a moron and a bore, and proceeds to lock her in several wrestling moves to snap the swordswoman out of her funk.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Contrary to her [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld real age]] and annoyance at being treated like a child, Eva's cottage has lots of cute dolls and plushies in the living room.
* GirlyBruiser: She loves ElegantGothicLolita clothing and stuffed toys, forms part of the flower arrangement club, and is well-versed in both highly destructive ice spells and martial arts.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Negi and Fate are martial artists and Nagi seems to have physical focus based on ninja techniques. Evangeline? She's a flat brawler with no real style and she's absolutely terrifying in close combat. Except she also knows aikijuudou, which completely catches Setsuna (and the audience) off guard.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: DoubleSubverted. Evangeline is an adorable doll-like little girl with extremely long golden hair. She's also a centuries-old vampire who early on attacks Negi and his students so she can break the curse that keeps her trapped at the school. She can be rude, jaded and apathetic, but others can easily tell that [[HiddenHeartOfGold she's a much nicer person than she lets on.]]
* HairReboot: It seems Evangeline's immortality extends to her hair as well. When Secundum destroys a bit of her hair together with her arm, both arm and hair are restored to normal in no time.
* HealingFactor: Her body can easily heal from things like being impaled or losing a limb in a matter of seconds.
* HeelFaceTurn: She appears first as the villain before becoming a neutral force and finally Negi's teacher, though she refuses to step in and help him directly unless he has no other way out because she wants Negi to overcome as many obstacles on his own as he can.
* HiddenDepths: She's dark and abrasive, but even her worst reputation admits that she's never been recorded as killing women or children. She's also an unparalleled master of magical theory, an excellent teacher and surprisingly lonely.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She tries to keep up her reputation as a horribly evil mage, but everyone who knows her realizes that that's not really the case.
* HimeCut: Eva has blunt bangs, hip-length sidelocks, and ankle-length straight hair. She has an affinity for ElegantGothicLolita fashion and at one point, she implies that she's royalty.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard:
** This is a fighting style Eva relies on with her weak body. Aikijuudou relies on using the power and momentum of the opponent against them. She easily overwhelms Setsuna with plain physical techniques in her "weakest condition".
** The ultimate technique of Magia Erebea is ''Sinus Magnus'' (Taiindou). The true purpose of Magia Erebea is not taking in ki or mana, shots or spells, but the enemy's own "power", making it her own.
* HomeFieldAdvantage: On the rare occasions when she fights seriously, she can set a territory that naturally amplifies her ice magic.
* HopelessSuitor: She has a crush on Nagi, but he rejects her because he isn't into an "old hag" who looks like a child. To add insult to injury, Eva later finds out Nagi was already married when she met him. Eva thinks Nagi would have fallen for her if it wasn't for Arika, but Albireo believes Eva was doomed to rejection either way.
* HomeNudist: When Negi and his friends summon Eva's magic copy from a scroll, she appears naked, resting on a couch and playing retro games. Chisame outright asks the Eva copy if the scroll is her house. It's unknown whether the real Eva does this in private, but it's likely.
* HumanizingTears: At the end of the [[TournamentArc Mahora Martial Arts Tournament]], Eva tears up after Nagi's hologram gives her [[AffectionateGestureToTheHead one last pat to the head]], proving that deep down she's still pining for him even after he trapped her at the school and then forgot about her.
* IHateYouVampireDad: She took revenge on the person who made her into a vampire. According to Eva, this was the only time she has ever killed someone out of hatred.
* IHaveManyNames: She's a very famous dark mage and has a plethora of titles to match her reputation to the point that the page image even parodies it after people get tired of hearing even more.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: In the rare-as-a-blue-moon occasions when she lets her guard down or has no time to prepare her adult-act, Eva lives in a beautifully-decorated child's room, glowing bright with innocence and filled with adorable stuffed toys, hinting that ''this'' is the life she really wants rather than the cold cynicism of immortal adulthood. Events make it clear that her attitude is largely a defense mechanism and she's not really capable of being honest about her desires.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Though she denies it when Ku:Nel brings it up, it's rather obvious through her actions that she wants to be friends with the other girls of 3-A. They would be more than happy to have her as a friend, but she keeps her distance because perhaps she fears rejection because of [[OurVampiresAreDifferent who she is]], or because she knows [[WhoWantsToLiveForever she'll outlive all of them]].
* IKissYourFoot: Eva ''demands'' this when she feels like bullying someone asking for her teachings.
* ILoveYouVampireSon: Negi picks up Eva's Magia Erebea technique which gradually transforms him into an immortal demon. While the exact nature of her feelings is fairly ambiguous, Eva is very fond of Negi even if [[{{Tsundere}} she hates to admit it]]. According to Albireo, Eva is thrilled that her student has mastered her DangerousForbiddenTechnique and is now the same kind of monster as her.
* AnIcePerson: Just as Negi is a specialist in light, wind and lightning, Evangeline has a natural affinity for the more complicated and difficult ice magic.
* IcyBlueEyes: They show her icy, cool and calculating personality. Fittingly, she uses ice magic to boot.
* ImmortalImmaturity: She likes to act refined, though it's difficult when she has to look up at the person, but sometimes lapses into childish whimpering. Whenever she starts to subvert this and act her age, Chachamaru usually tells her "please don't start pretending you're old."
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Fate impales her with a massive stone pillar during Kyoto. She ignores it and the wound heals in seconds.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: She loves dressing up in really elaborate clothing and even forces her classmates into wearing similar outfits after declaring they lack sex appeal.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Strings and wires, the weapons of a puppet master. They aren't going to be more than a nuisance against stronger people, and [[ItOnlyWorksOnce once you are aware]] Eva can use them, you won't fall for it again, but most inexperienced people can't even see them until it's too late.
* InconvenientSummons: During the Magic World arc, a magical copy of Evangeline is summoned from her scroll... and she appears naked on a couch, eating potato chips and playing a video game.
* IronicName: Evangeline means "bearer of good news". Don't ever forget this is the given name of the infamous Dark Evangel who is the equivalent of the boogeyman of the Magic World.
* ItAmusedMe: She loves giving Negi outrageous orders just to see if he'll go through with them, such as demanding that he lick her feet before she would teach him magic.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's sarcastic and unfriendly, but it's clear she cares about Negi and her classmates after awhile.
* JustifiedCriminal: Asuna believes this is the case for Eva who confesses having killed people to survive the {{witch hunt}}s in a war-torn medieval Europe. Eva, however, doesn't think any crime she committed was excusable.
* KidWithTheLeash: Played straight with [[PerversePuppet Chachazero]], a [[GirlWithPsychoWeapon Puppet with a Psycho Weapon]], who's comically bloodthirsty, but reined in by Eva. Inverted rather amusingly with her other puppet/familiar -- [[MartialPacifist Chachamaru]] would not hurt a fly, let alone [[KindHeartedCatLover a cat]], if she did not have to.
* KillItWithIce: She specializes in ice magic, though you don't see much of it since she doesn't need to use her specialty when training Negi. However, she does oneshot the demon god at the end of the Kyoto arc with her ice magic and later invents a spell called Endless White Nine Heavens, an original ice-lightning spell that targets overblown barriers, locks-on and continually freezes them and their surroundings solid [[FateWorseThanDeath while leaving them conscious, so they can suffer for all eternity.]] [[spoiler:She does this to essentially every Cosmo Entelechia member and says she has no plans to release them.]]
* KillingInSelfDefense: As [[AllThereInTheManual background information]] about Kosmike Katastrophe reveal, Eva only finished the spell on anyone (and thus killed those) who seriously tried to kill her and didn't show any fear of death.
* KungFuWizard: As her illusion copy duel with Negi shows, she's as deadly in close combat as in casting bombardment spells.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Evangeline is one of the oldest, most powerful and infamous mages in the world, specializing in spells of ice and darkness. She can act classy and sophisticated when she's not being a LargeHam. Her appearance doesn't fit into the trope most of the time because her body never aged past ten years old, but she can fix that by casting an illusion on herself to appear as an alluring woman in a sexy black dress.
* LargeHam: When facing a massive demon, before unleashing her power, she paused and looked back to ask if Negi and the others were watching. Talk about playing to the audience.
-->'''Asuna:''' [[LampshadeHanging Eva-chan is really getting into this]].
* LaserBlade: When fighting in close combat, she occasionally makes a magical blade pop out the end of her arm. It's apparently made out of ''entropy''. WordOfGod is that one of the reasons the spell is so difficult is because it makes no sense in regards to the laws of physics.
* LecherousLicking: When she and Negi are both naked in the bath, she transforms into her sexy adult form and likes the wound left by Nagi's projection on Negi's arm.
* LeotardOfPower: Early on, she puts on a swimsuit-esque one piece when acting as the powerful, feared sorceress she was in her past years.
* LiterallyShatteredLives:
** This is how Eva easily defeats Sukuna-no-Kami at the end of the Kyoto arc. She only needed Chachamaru to take down the demon god's barrier and quickly shattered him with Kosmike Katastrophe, the High Ancient Spell of Ice (known to be the most powerful ice spell).
** Kosmike Katastrophe in general is a two-part spell. The first part merely (more or less) incapacitates the victim by freezing them solid. If her assassins [[WouldHurtAChild didn't show hesitation to kill a "child"]] or [[NotAfraidToDie weren't afraid to die]], she finished the spell and shattered them. Else, she would have omitted the second part, although the first part alone probably killed them, considering it freezes a bounded space to nearly absolute zero.
* LittleMissBadass: She's tiny and harmless looking, but is in fact essentially unstoppable in a fight.
* LittleMissSnarker: Her sarcastic and abrasive attitude is quite at odds with her appearance, which is noted as being doll-like and innocent.
* LivingForeverIsAwesome: Apart from the bit where she's stuck in a form she doesn't like and that contrasts with her mind, she seems pretty pleased with being immortal.
* LoveFatherLoveSon: She forms an attachment to Negi that is at least influenced by him [[StrongFamilyResemblance looking almost identical to his father Nagi]] whom Eva was in love with. She even wants to force Negi to go on a date with her in his teenage form because he looks even more identical to Nagi like that. She seems somewhat amused that they're almost nothing alike when it comes to personality. It's unclear how much of her affection for Negi is romantic even though she likes teasing him a lot, but the LoveChart indicates her motherly feelings are stronger than any romantic or sexual attraction she might have.
* {{Lunacy}}: Her vampiric abilities are apparently affected by the cycle of the moon since she's at her strongest on a night of full moon and her fangs disappear until the next full moon.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: She doesn't use magical arrow spells as much as Negi, but she can pull of a pretty good barrage.
* MagicalBarefooter: She's often shown with no footwear when going all-out in magic battle. If she could still use her magic freely to fly regularly, she'd probably never wear shoes.
* MasterOfThreads: One of the many abilities she's picked up over the years is the ability to manipulate strings of thread to tie people up and possibly cut them. It doesn't appear to be magic either as she uses it even when her powers are sealed.
* MayflyDecemberFriendship: It's hinted that part of the reason she keeps to herself is because of the consequences of this, but she does come around eventually.
* MeaningfulName: Eva's middle name "Athanasia" means "{{immortality}}". Beyond the obvious, every one of her advanced spells (especially the ice magic) is in some way a challenge to the concept of entropy and the idea that things have to come to an end. Her other middle name, Katherine (at the time of her birth, it might have been Katerina) is referenced as derived from Hecate, a goddess of witchcraft.
* MentorArchetype: She has a special interest in first Negi and later Asuna and Setsuna and helps guide all three in her own way.
* MentorInSourArmor: She's merciless when training Negi and later, other members of Ala Alba, but it's not hard to see she cares about them; refusing to go soft on them is her way of showing it. Evangeline knows from experience how hard life can be, so she wants to make sure her apprentices are ready to overcome any obstacle. She also passes along her world view to Negi, which states that good and evil are meaningless ideas, so he stops questioning his own moral standing too much.
* MerlinAndNimue: Negi is the Nimue to Evangeline's Merlin. She is several centuries older and becomes his master in magic, after he saw a glimpse of her power in Kyoto. He eventually even adopts her original technique, Magia Erebea. While they show affection towards each other, neither seem romantically interested.
* MetaGuy: She often speaks of events in terms of video games. She even calls herself a mid/final boss so that the proto-Ala Alba won't get too friendly with her.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: She says that she acts much younger than her age because she's been stuck in a ten-year-old body for hundreds of years and her pre-pubescent form influences her self-perception and personality.
* NewTransferStudent: Amusingly, Evangeline (the only Caucasian girl in Class 2-A/3-A) is sometime referred to as "that transfer student", despite having been locked into the school since roughly the year that the rest of the class was born.
* NighInvulnerability: Evangeline is pretty much invincible due to the fact that her vampire powers allow her to regenerate any damage. On at least one occasion, she's been impaled by a chunk of rock about an inch narrower than her torso, and she was more mildly annoyed than anything else.
* NobleDemon: [[CardCarryingVillain Insists that she's pure evil]] because of her vampirism and past crimes, but deep down she's just something of an aloof, amoral {{Tsundere}}. She likes going on about her evil plans, but she never really does anything. Being something of a MetaGuy, Evangeline is not above using this perception in order to make points about her world view, which states that evil and good are largely meaningless values.
* NominalVillain: She [[CardCarryingVillain describes herself as a great villain]], but in truth she's largely just amoral and indifferent. The worst things she's ever shown doing are stalking Nagi and picking on Negi and some of her classmates, but she never tries to lethally harm anyone even when she has the power to do so. It's possible she calls herself evil as [[EvilIsHammy an excuse to be so over the top]].
* NotMeThisTime: After his defeat by Eva, a mopey Negi is kidnapped by various girls from 3-A to cheer him up. Asuna accuses Eva of making him disappear, but Eva simply shoots it down as she has no idea where he is.
* NotGrowingUpSucks: Evangeline likes the whole immortality thing, but she's pretty pissed about being stuck in a child's body. She uses magic to make herself look like an adult woman whenever she can.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Towards the end of the series she starts to participate in the shenanigans of her classmates where normally she'd distance herself.
* NotSoStoic: In chapter 66, when most of Negi's students see his memories of the last time he saw his father, Eva is at first stoic, but then tries to hide the fact that she's actually moved.
* OffstageVillainy: She has a 600 year long history of evil and bloodshed resulting a 6 million dollar bounty and essentially acting as the boogeyman of the magic world (eat your peas, or Evangeline will come and eat you). Despite all of this, she only does a few villainous things on-screen: sucking blood from students and attacking Negi. Other than that, she regularly helps out the heroes, going so far as to train them and let them use her magical resort for vacation. It's even hinted that her evil reputation is an exaggeration, and that she acted the part so that people would leave her alone. She still constantly tries to claim she's evil, but everyone who knows her claims that she's not that bad.
* OlderAlterEgo: She invented a spell that forces the target to appear as they would at an older age. It's referred to as an illusion, but is physically solid.
* OneWomanArmy: She has a level of magical aptitude that is essentially unmatched in the story, flexible abilities and a number of vampire abilities that are left rather vague but include the ability to heal without any known limit. She can stomp all over other characters that are one man armies in their own right [[spoiler:including all of Cosmo Entelechia at once minus the Lifemaker.]]
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: As a pureblood/true ancestor vampire, Evangeline is known as a top-tier monster and has a number of abilities that are never elaborated on, but include the ability to make vampire minions by biting humans, immortality and an intense HealingFactor. She apparently has no weakness to running water or holy symbols, although she possibly "grew out" of those like her original weakness to sunlight.
* OverlyLongName: Evangeline Athanasia Katherine [=McDowell=], with the two middle names usually initialized for short. This is one of the things that imply she's nobility.
* ParasolOfPrettiness: Sometimes uses this to complement her ElegantGothicLolita attire.
* ParentalSubstitute: She acts as a sort of mother figure to Chachamaru and encourages her emotional development, though the two pick on each other a great deal.
* PassThePopcorn: During the climax of the battle between Negi's group and Chao, Eva sits back sipping alcohol while she watches the show from several hundred feet up in the air.
* PastExperienceNightmare: When suffering from a high fever, Evangeline has a nightmare about the day Nagi defeated her in a comically humiliating way and trapped her inside Mahora Academy with a curse to get her off his back.
* PeoplePuppets: She can control weak people using nothing but wire.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Evangeline is stronger than most militaries. She doesn't usually bother doing much, though.
* PhenotypeStereotype: She was born in some part of Western Europe (implied to be Scotland because of her family name [=McDowell=]), is blue-eyed and has blonde hair.
* PiningAfterProtagonistsParent: She was in love with Negi's father, Nagi. However, he wasn't interested in her and had to seal her into the Mahora grounds just so she would stop stalking him. This is the reason behind her initial antagonism towards Negi and her desire to go on a date with his older self.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Despite being one of the most powerful entities in the Negima-verse, Evangeline is still physically a 10-year-old girl; in fact, at only 1.3 meters (about 4'3") tall, even for a 10-year-old girl she's tiny!
* PokeThePoodle: She claims she's an evil mage while the most morally objectionable thing we ever see her do is pick on her students.
* ProudBeauty: She considers herself sexy and alluring. To her chagrin, nobody takes her looks seriously.
* PsychologicalProjection: She projects some of her issues with her past on Setsuna and Asuna, who were also abandoned and forced to fight from a young age. Evangeline tries to make Setsuna and Asuna give up on fighting and focus on enjoying a carefree school life. It's implied Eva is annoyed at seeing those girls being willing to throw away the happiness that she wanted for herself, but now can't achieve after becoming a murderer. At the end, however, Eva comes to respect Setsuna and Asuna for their determination to protect their friends.
* PsychoticSmirk: Almost always sports this on.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: She occasionally wears glasses when she acts as a magic teacher with centuries worth of knowledge. Since she clearly doesn't need the glasses, she must be trying to look smart.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She was born and turned into a vampire during the late Middle Ages. She looks ten, but she's probably around seven hundred years old at a minimum.
* RedArmbandOfLeadership: During the summer festival, Evangeline wears an armband as "Honorary Advisor" to the Ala Alba.
* RedBaron: Eva has [[IHaveManyNames dozens of nicknames and titles]], most of them being sinister and dangerous with one of the most commonly used probably being the Dark Evangel, though more and more titles just keep getting added throughout until it even gets used as joke material.
* RescueRomance: She fell in love with Nagi after he saved her life somehow and then became his StalkerWithACrush.
* RetiredMonster: Forcibly in her case. After murdering people for hundreds of years and gaining a 6-million-dollar bounty, Nagi tricked her and left her trapped in Mahora to then completely forget about her. Having her magic powers sealed and not being able to graduate because of her unaging body, Evangeline is forced to live like an ordinary schoolgirl, which bores her out of her mind.
* SealedBadassInACan: She's an uber-powerful vampire who was placed under a curse by Nagi which trapped her on Mahora campus and severely limited her power.
* SeenItAll: She admits that she hasn't seen everything, but by this time the new things she does see aren't really enough to impress her anymore. Stuff changes, big deal.
* SexierAlterEgo: In her adult form, Evangeline becomes very tall, stacked and wears more adult clothing.
* SexyMentor: She's pretty convinced that she's sexy and her relationship with Negi has some undeniable ShipTease.
* ShadowWalker: She can teleport through shadows when she feels sufficient need.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She's normally pretty unconcerned about people seeing her naked.
* ShipperOnDeck: Though she teases her about it at the same time, she really supports Chachamaru's feelings for Negi.
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Years of seeing the worst in people have worn down her idealism, and constantly tries to undo Negi's overwhelming idealistic nature. In the end, they start to take cues from each other.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: She dumps Asuna in the Himalayas to get her to use her Kanka ability correctly, essentially forcing her to figure out the technique or freeze to death.
* SkippingSchool: At the beginning of the series, Eva rarely attends class because she's fed up of repeating the same school years over and over because of Nagi's curse. Negi gets her to finally stop skipping his classes after he defeats her.
* SleepModeSize: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Her "sleep mode" is her real appearance (vampirized as a child) and her full power adult form is an illusion.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Although she is centuries old, she very much acts like a smitten young girl around her crush Nagi. She's so bashful that she had Chachazero tell Nagi her feelings on her own behalf.
* SmugSuper: She damn well knows that she's one of the most powerful and infamous mages in the setting and doesn't let those around her forget it.
* SourOutsideSadInside: She acts as an amoral and indifferent vampire {{Tsundere}}, repeatedly claiming to be a purely evil, irredeemable villain. However, it's made clear her attitude is largely a defense mechanism that comes from her troubled past and it's implied that deep down she doesn't like how her life has turned out. It's even hinted that she enforced her "evil vampire" reputation so that people would leave her alone.
* SpiritedCompetitor: She likes to fight for fun.
* StalkerWithACrush: After Nagi saved her life somehow, she developed a crush and began following him around everywhere. He eventually had her sealed in Mahora to keep her from bugging him.
* StarterVillainStays: Evangeline is the first villain encountered in the story but remains after her defeat. Justified since Negi made her promise not to skip class anymore, and Evangeline becomes interested in him.
* StevenUlyssesPerhero: Conveniently, part of her name, Athanasia, means 'immortality.'
* StoryBreakerPower: Possibly the strongest character shown in the series with one notable exception. As early as the end of the Kyoto arc, it's shown that she's so monstrously powerful and knowledgeable that should she step into a conflict, it will be resolved immediately. It's also hard to beat someone with a HealingFactor that has no shown limits. Luckily for the plot, she's much more interested in seeing Negi develop, so she very rarely intervenes in main events.
* SuperDrowningSkills: Despite having lived for centuries, Evangeline never learned how to swim, which left her in danger of drowning by falling into a lake during her fight with Negi.
* SympatheticMurderBackstory: Eva killed many people to survive the witch hunts in the Middle Ages. Because of this, she considers herself to be an evil monster and believes she has lost her right to ever be happy no matter if others may say otherwise.
* TheTease: She likes to flaunt her adult form's sex appeal, particularly to Negi. On one occasion, she orders her RobotGirl squad to strip Negi naked and throw him into the bath with her while she changes to her busty adult form, only for her to start phrasing things in the dirtiest way possible before licking the cut on his arm.
* TechnicallyLivingVampire: Eva used to be a regular human until a lost magic technique was used on her and turned her into a vampire when she was ten years old. Because of this, she's more of a magically altered human rather than an undead. She drinks blood, is immortal and her soul fundamentally differs from that of a human now, but besides that, there really isn't anything that sets her apart from a human since she can eat human food, walk under the sunlight and even catch a cold.
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: She looks like a ten-year-old but acts like what she is: An arrogant, immortal vampire with immense magical power. The disparity between what she is and how she looks is the source of a great deal of humor.
* TokenImmortal: She's an unkillable ReallySevenHundredYearsOld vampire who is forced to attend a class of schoolgirls because of a curse. Some of her classmates aren't exactly mortal, such as the ghost girl and a few who have demon blood, but Evangeline is the only one who is a full-blown undying monster.
* TookALevelInIdealism: It's subtle, but she's not quite as cynical at the end of the series as Negi's idealistic nature starts to rub off on her.
* TookALevelInKindness: She warms up to Class 3-A as the series progresses, and even starts to participate in their hijinx where she would normally keep her distance.
* TouchedByVorlons: According to Albireo, Evangeline became an immortal vampire because the Lifemaker, an immortal with power resembling a PhysicalGod, performed a magic experiment on her.
* ToughLove: Eva isn't the type of girl who likes showing affection. Her TrainingFromHell on Negi and Asuna is both her way of having fun and toughen them up so she doesn't have to worry about what might happen to her students since almost nothing can kill them if they can survive fighting her.
* TragicIceCharacter: Evangeline is a sorceress specialized in ice spells and from what we hear her say about her past, she hasn't had an easy life. She was transformed into a vampire against her will at the age of 10, lost her family (it's implied she might have killed them in an uncontrollable bloodlust), spent centuries constantly persecuted or on the run, and had to kill people who came after her head until she was one of the most wanted criminals in the mage society.
* {{Tsundere}}: She likes to think of Negi as her minion, and [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial it's not like she cares about him or anything]]. Albireo also calls her a tsundere for all of Class 3-A, as it's clear she's quite fond of her classmates no matter how much she tries to pretend otherwise.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes show her pride in her reputation and her {{Tsundere}} character.
* {{Ubermensch}}: Evangeline notably rejects the simple forms of morality that Negi clings to, but doesn't begrudge his desire to do good even after he realizes his view of the world is naive.
* UndeadBarefooter: She's a vampire and likes going around without shoes whenever she can.
* VainSorceress: She's pretty touchy about her appearance and even invented a spell that increases or decreases the age of the target temporarily. Unlike the normal play on the trope, however, she wants to look ''older.''
* VampireBitesSuck: Negi does ''not'' enjoy getting bitten by Eva.
* VampiresAreRich: She owns two resorts in a magic bottle (one which includes a castle), has several {{Robot Maid}}s at her service, and enjoys dressing in ElegantGothicLolita fashion when out of her school uniform. Although, it's most likely that her resources are supplied by her magic instead of money.
* VampiresAreSexGods: Subverted. She seems to believe this ought to be the case, but nobody is interested when the vampire in question looks like a ten-year-old. Her adult form ''is'' portrayed as a quite sophisticated and elegant woman with nice curves. However, when trying to make some moves on Negi in that form, the kid is just too {{chaste|hero}} to get it.
* VampiresHateGarlic: Garlic won't kill her, but she does hate it (along with leeks). In fact, Nagi defeated her by making her fall into a hole which he then filled with a soup of garlic and leeks.
* VampireLolitaArchetype: She is a 600-year-old True Ancestor vampire who was turned into one when she was ten years old. She's a very haughty and cynical {{Tsundere}} with long blonde hair and enjoys dressing in ElegantGothicLolita clothing. She's also implied to be royalty. After being defeated by the protagonist, she eventually becomes his magic mentor and potential love interest. Although she's one of the most powerful mages, most of her magic has been sealed. When at her full power, however, she can use illusions to make herself look like a busty, alluring woman.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: Initially she merely wanted to drain Negi's blood to remove her curse, but she becomes interested (and later develops a crush) in him and decides to let him live. She becomes his mentor later on in magic and ideals.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Seems to be friends with Albireo despite the fact that he spends all of his time [[TheGadfly picking on her]] while she tries to kill him.
* WaifFu: With her power sealed, she's able to pin adult martial artists effortlessly by exploiting their center of gravity. Also somehow capable of taking them out in a single blow.
* WakeUpCallBoss: She's Negi's first serious enemy in the story (though she's not as evil as she claims to be). Her introduction lets Negi and the reader know there will be mages who pose a threat to Negi and his students from that point on, motivating Negi to grow more powerful and form his first Pactio with Asuna to gain a partner who aids him in a fight. In what is probably an instance of playing with this trope, Eva likens herself to both intermediate and final bosses from a video game, and refuses to say exactly ''which'' she is.
* WarriorPoet: Eva has done a lot of thinking about the meaning of good and evil in her time and it shows in how she speaks.
** She often speaks to Negi about the meaning of conflict, morality and philosophical views of magic.
** Before the fight against Setsuna, she quotes Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina":
-->"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
** There is another example during the ball, as quoted by Negi:
--->"Where there is distress, therein lies a story.\
Where there is a story, therein lies a will.\
...And wherever there is a will, therein lies a soul."
* WeakButSkilled:
** In her first confrontation with Negi, despite lacking the majority of her power, she can use a number of spells because she uses potions.
** The Mahora Martial Arts Tournament shows that Eva is physically still far superior than the smaller fish and she can even beat up Setsuna in her weakest condition. A mix of aiki-techniques and her wires are enough.
* WitchHunt: Her backstory had people trying to kill her for being a vampire, many times.
* WolverineClaws: When she wants to melee, she forms her hands into large, sharp claws.
* WouldntHurtAChild: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. She never intended to kill Negi because she doesn't kill children. That doesn't stop her from messing with the kid in attempts to drink his blood and has fun putting him through TrainingFromHell.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: While berating Setsuna for her NoPlaceForAWarrior angst, she locks her in an octopus stretch, then a [[Wrestling/BretHart [=Sharpshooter=]]].

Mana is a supposedly ex-mercenary with a fondness for magical equipment and firearms. She is one of the four known martial arts masters of the class, along with Ku Fei, Setsuna and Kaede. She blatantly sells her services to the highest bidder, but despite her claims, she does seem to have her own sense of honor. Since her moral sense doesn't quite match up with Negi despite their mutual respect, the two can easily come into conflict. Mana looks much older than most of her classmates and cannot pass for her age or even as a high schooler. She has a rivalry with Kaede, and she and Setsuna are work colleagues.\
\
Mana makes her first real appearance at the end of the Kyoto arc. She, along with Ku Fei and Kaede, arrive to deal with the oni army that Chigusa Amagasaki summoned, and support Setsuna and Asuna.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: In areas with particularly thick mana she can use time displacement bullets, which serve a tactical use rather than being a direct weapon. Anyone hit by them is forcibly sent three hours into the future.
* ActionGirl: She's a "former" mercenary and battlefield veteran and is thus always calm and composed in combat with an exceptional level of ability.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's tall, attractive, aloof and has long black hair.
* AlwaysSecondBest: To Kaede. Her breasts are only a tiny bit smaller (and she's the only girl in the series who has her breast size measured to a decimal point), she weighs a little more, and the only serious fight they have, Mana concedes that she lost. Mana doesn't really mind though, as she sees Kaede as a WorthyOpponent. [[spoiler:They also have a fight in TheMovie at full power, Kaede still comes out on top]].
* BadassLongcoat: She sometimes dons a cool long coat when going into battle.
* BadassLongRobe: Usually, when she's on the job.
* BagOfHolding: She apparently stores extra ammunition and her larger weapons in a pocket dimension, quite clearly shown when reloading during the Governor's Ball.
* BigDamnHeroes: Before the final fight of the Kyoto arc, Yue manages to escape Fate's ambush on Konoka's home and calls Kaede for help. Kaede then arrives with Ku Fei and Mana just in time, when Negi, Setsuna and Asuna are about to be overwhelmed by Kotarō, Tsukuyomi and the sheer number of onis Chigusa Amagasaki summoned.
* BizarreAndImprobableBallistics: At one point, she bounces her shots almost full-180 to hit someone behind cover.
* BrokenBird: Due to her upbringing on the battlefield and loss of her Pactio master she's rather aloof and pragmatic for a fourteen or fifteen year old. The miserliness has another cause, though.
* ButNotTooForeign: She's half-Puerto Rican. [[spoiler:Or maybe a quarter Puerto Rican unless she's half Puerto Rican ''demon.'']]
* CantBatheWithoutAWeapon: While in hot springs in Kyoto, she had a gun hidden under a bucket and was seconds away from shooting Asakura.
* ChildSoldiers: She has been fighting in various trouble spots around the world since her childhood.
* ClickHello: Right before a shadow puppet [[spoiler:nearly erases Shiori disguised as Asuna]] Mana finally shows herself with a oneliner and a quick headshot.
* ColdSniper: She never, ''ever'' lets her emotions get in the way of her doing her job, as exemplified during the first day of the Mahora Festival:
-->''(After decking a dude who was about to confess to her, with a [[NoRangeLikePointBlankRange point-blank headshot]]...)''
-->'''Mana:''' Negi-sensei... There's no need for men in ''my'' battlefield...
* TheComicallySerious: Despite or perhaps because of her serious attitude she can say some silly things earnestly.
* ConsummateProfessional: Mana takes her job ''very'' seriously. When she is hired by the Mahora staff to stop anyone in range of the World Tree from confessing their love to their partner, she mercilessly snipes them down with a tranquilizer. When apparently her crush sees her and wishes to confess his love to her, she thanks him... and shortly after shoots him in the head.
* CrazyPrepared: She has talismans and gear prepared for everything to make up for apparent lack of ki and magic usage. [[spoiler:Though even with her BadassNormal credentials subverted she still utilizes all her tricks.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She grew up on the battlefield serving as a ministra until her pactio master was killed, at which point she apparently returned to school and half-retired from mercenary work.
* DemonSlaying: She takes on these kinds of jobs during her mercenary work.
* DepletedPhlebotinumShells: Her standard ammo are bullets with spells on them and are frequently used for exorcisms.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: She gets a minor's discount at the movie theater by using a magic item to change her appearance. It's only after the transaction is completed that she realizes the price of the item is more than the amount of the discount, meaning she lost money on the exchange.
* TheDreaded: PlayedForLaughs. When she enters the [[SchoolFestival MahoraFest]] tournament, Negi wonders if he'll be killed by her.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:Maybe we should have read "Demon Eye" a little more literally, huh?]]
* FriendlyRivalry: She's always eager to challenge Kaede no matter what the location, even if they're disguised as kindergarteners. For instance, at the end of the Mahora Festival arc, Mana uses Displacement Magic against Kaede, which cost ''800,000'' apiece. She outright says they are [[WorthyOpponent worth it against Kaede.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Mana is implied to be an orphan, who was found by a mage who took her in and gave her a purpose in life. She in return has a soft spot especially for orphans and donates lots of money to them. However, she's aware that this is not enough and that they need a solid foundation to survive - education. Setsuna is baffled when she learns of Mana's HiddenDepths.
* FriendlySniper: Well, sort of. She takes her jobs seriously but she's still a decent person on the inside, and would never harm her classmates.
* GoodSamaritan: Mana anonymously donates large amounts of money to an orphanage, and is even given a good samaritan title for this.
* GunFu: Give Mana a firearm or two and she's a death machine, capable of wiping out a crowd of people all around her without turning around.
* GunKata: During the Governor's Ball she's shooting in every direction while standing still and dodging in a set of flashy poses rather than using much in the way of mobility.
* GunsAkimbo: With her signature dual [[HandCannon Desert Eagles]], though they're apparently airsoft versions which usually shoot tranquilizer rounds or magic bullets. What's scary is her now-inactive Pactio card showing her with a pair of similar guns, so her currently-inaccessible artifact is also a pair of guns. Which she started using as a child.
* TheGunslinger: She prefers trick shots and GunFu, but against opponents that are dodging too well like Poyo Rainyday she's prepared to release a massive volley of shots.
* HandCannon: She ''dual wields'' Desert Eagles.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Before she became a student at Mahora, she fought in war-torn regions all over the world while working as a mercenary alongside her now deceased Magister. We only get to know about this through what she tells Negi about herself.
* HugeSchoolgirl: When she tries to buy movie passes for a student, the saleslady thinks she's joking.
* HumanDemonHybrid: [[spoiler:She's half demon. Her demonic powers primarily manifest in a MagicalEye.]]
* HunterOfHerOwnKind: [[spoiler:It turns out she's half a mazoku-demon. Mana and Setsuna are thus both half-demons (albeit very different half-demons) who occasionally hunt and exorcize together. In the final battles of the Magic World arc, she is matched against Poyo Rainyday, who herself is also a mazoku-demon.]]
* IAmNotLeftHanded:
** If you think she is weak in close ranges because she shoots you from a distance with her rifle, you are sorely mistaken. Kotarō also wrongly assumes Mana wouldn't stand much of a chance against Ku in the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, because guns are forbidden.
** [[spoiler:Mana turns into her demon-form in her fight against Poyo.]]
* ImprobableAge: Her history of being a wandering mercenary who's fought on battlefields the world over has Negi outright questioning if she really is 15.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: In addition to the BizarreAndImprobableBallistics mentioned above, she can hold a 14 kg rifle with one hand.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: The first fight we see her in has her using weaponized coins since she can't use guns like normal.
* InSeriesNickname: Negi starts calling her "Captain" starting at the Mahorafest confession-stopping scene.
* ISeeDeadPeople: She has the "demon eye" ability, which apparently allows her to see ghosts.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: It's really closer to EvenEvilHasStandards, but she's not exactly villainous enough to qualify for that. For example, refusing to accept money for throwing a fight because she hadn't ''intended'' to lose, and deciding to fight "Poyo" on her own so Negi can move on ''and'' stating she's doing so because she believes in Negi. Also, she's apparently paying all the bills for an orphanage.
* LeotardOfPower: She occasionally goes into battle dressed in a leotard.
* LovingAShadow: She joined the biathlon club because the head of the club looks like her deceased partner. Not that she lets those feelings get in the way of her job.
* MagicalEye: According to Volume 29's Q&A, her left eye is a "demon eye", with which she can "see the true forms of demonic beings, and is used for extreme-range shots. Normally, it isn't active." She uses it just once when tracking Sayo.
* {{Miko}}: In between the breaks she gets in her mercenary job, she helps out at a shrine.
* MiserAdvisor: She gets sketchy over 200 yen, which is very roughly $2.00. Her main victim is Setsuna, who she bills for her services in DemonSlaying, though she's willing to charge anyone on the team for any amount of time spent fighting.
* MultiRangedMaster: Her skill at changing from rifle to dual handguns has surprised many enemies. She's even good in extreme close range.
-->'''Mana:''' There are no weak distances for me.
* MysteriousPast: It's never fleshed out, but she has a dead pactio card from a previous master that has a different last name than the one she goes by.
* NervesOfSteel: Mana ''never'' loses her cool in battle. It's distracting, and she advises her classmates to do the same.
-->'''Mana:''' Rage can lend a person power, but it also clouds one's judgment. You should keep your cool, Yue Ayase.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A gunslinging mercenary sniper miko [[spoiler:half-demon]] schoolgirl.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Mana is usually one of the more serious members of class 3-A, but she uses magic to escape paying a higher rate to go see a movie before she realizes she actually ''spent more money than if she simply paid the student rate''. It's a surprisingly simple math error from a middle schooler who is quite the miser.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Or so she claims. She's a mercenary, but she does help out her classmates because she cares about them and she refused Chao's money after Mana lost to Ku because one, she didn't intentionally lose and gave it her all, and two, because she thinks that Negi wouldn't approve.
* PaperTalisman: She uses a {{Teleportation}} [=sutras=] against Kaede during the [=MahoraFest=] Arc; apparently they cost ''800,000 yen'' apiece and only work once.
* PinballProjectile: During the [[SchoolFestival MahoraFest Arc]], she manages to conceal her hiding spot this way.
* PowerDyesYourHair: Her hair turns white when [[spoiler:she releases her demon powers]].
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: When she finally reveals where she's been during the entire Magic World arc.
-->'''Mana:''' Don't ever think of touching my classmate with that filthy hand of yours. You wooden doll.
* PrivateMilitaryContractors: She explained that she was once a part of one of these named Kanbanurae. She traveled to so many battlefields across the far corners of the globe that Negi questioned whether she could be 15 years of age.
* PunchClockVillain: Pretends to be only in it for money, [[SubvertedTrope but]] joins [[HeroAntagonist Chao]] because she believes in her ideals. Doesn't stop her from taking the money, though. Off duty, she has a minor rivalry with Kaede and has a mutual respect for Negi, who she has helped in the past.
* SenselessViolins: She brings along a guitar case for her BigDamnHeroes moment.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: The outfit that she wears as part of her disguise to sneak into the Governor-General's Ball at Ostia has an ImpossiblyLowNeckline.
* SignificantWhiteHairDarkSkin: Mana stands out for being one of the two students with dark skin and later on, her hair turns white [[spoiler:when she reveals herself as a half-demon]].
* SniperRifle: Her long-range weapon is a Remington M700 sniper rifle.
* StatuesqueStunner: She towers over her classmates and looks so much older than her classmates that she gets taken for a university student rather than a middle schooler.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She's aloof and very professional about her job, yet she has a more open and kind side that she's willing to show to those who get close to her when she isn't working.
* TragicKeepsake: She keeps [[PreciousPhoto a picture]] and her now useless pactio card in memory of her now deceased pactio partner.
* UnorthodoxReload: During [[spoiler:the assault on the Governor's Ball]] she reloads in mid fight by ejecting clips from a pocket dimension and having the flips fly into her guns to reload.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: From the same battle, she pulls out massive rifles from her cleavage. Misora is baffled as to how they fit.
* VillainsOutShopping: The villain status of ''anyone'' in Negima is questionable, but right after her antagonist stint in Mahorafest we see her trying and failing to get her student discount at the movie theater.
* WingedHumanoid: [[spoiler:Her half demon form has two small black devil wings.]]
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Like Kaede, Mana is a middle school student who looks like a college student. This gives her issues when she wants the child price on a movie ticket. [[spoiler:Then again, she's a half-demon so her exact age is hard to determine.]]

Ayaka is the ClassRepresentative of 2/3-A, a filthy-rich lady, and Asuna's [[VitriolicBestBuds best friend and rival]] of sorts. She has a reputation as a ComedicShotacon and intense reactions to Negi, though hints abound that she may be seeing him as a ReplacementGoldfish for a stillborn little brother who would've been around Negi's age. Kotarō later moves into her room and the pair quite explicitly fail to get along as well as Ayaka and Negi do.\
\
Towards the end of the series, she finally gets a pactio card from Negi, which allows her to "organize a meeting" with anyone, no matter who they are or how difficult they would be to reach.
----
* AcademicAthlete: She's athletic and among the highest scorers on school exams.
* TheAce: Ayaka has many talents, gets very good grades, and leads the craziest class in all of Mahora Academy.
* AuntiePennybags: She hates the idea of looking like a RichBitch and throwing money around carelessly, so she only uses her money helping others or if Negi is involved.
* BerserkButton: Asuna often successfully riles Ayaka up by calling her a Shotacon.
* BeyondTheImpossible: She's so "excited" during her pactio with Negi that she swaps the system around and almost gives ''him'' a pactio card.
* BigBreastPride: Ayaka is quite proud of her "motherly" figure. Unfortunately the instant she brags about it, the students in the class who are even more well-endowed than her decide to make an appearance.
* BigFancyHouse: As shown in her DayInTheLimelight chapter, she's quite reasonably loaded. And that's not even making mention of her family's seaside resort.
* BigSisterInstinct: Part of her dynamic with Negi stems from seeing him as the little brother she [[TragicStillbirth never got to meet]], and her intense desire to bond with and protect him.
* BookSmart: She made it to the fourth place of the top five students with best grades in the school. Only Chao and Hakase, the two genius girls of the class, scored higher than her.
* BrokenTears: In Chapter 14, we see a flashback to her crying when her little brother was stillborn. It's heartbreaking.
* ButtMonkey: Poor Ayaka can't catch a break, often having moments stolen from her or being on the wrong end of slapstick comedy.
* CantCatchUp: Ayaka started as Asuna's [[TheRival rival]] -- both being athletic teens with a skill for martial arts able to match each other blow-for-blow. However, Asuna started training in martial arts, fought monsters and picked up kanka. Ayaka was crushed when she realized that Asuna was leagues ahead of her.
* CassandraTruth: When accused (often by Asuna) of being a ComedicShotacon, Ayaka vehemently denies any inappropriate interest in Negi, often stating that her feelings for him are pure. As noted above, if Chamo's LoveChart is to be believed, this may actually be true.
* ChildhoodFriends: She first met Asuna when the latter transferred to her class in elementary school. Asuna's [[EmotionlessGirl emotionless appearance]] when she was little irritated Ayaka, so she picked a fight that has defined [[VitriolicBestBuds their relationship]] ever since.
* ClassRepresentative: The role really shows with her butting heads with Asuna and any group activity she is present in. It also gives her the magical power to understand everything Zazie says even when Zazie doesn't say a thing.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She nearly goes nuts when the cheerleaders make her think Negi went out on a date with Konoka. She claims she just doesn't approve of an illicit teacher-student relationship, but it's obvious she won't accept it unless the student is herself.
* ComedicShotacon: She's a well-known shotacon and makes it no secret that she absolutely adores Negi, even getting occasional massive {{Nosebleed}}s for him which are always PlayedForLaughs. Funnily enough, the LoveChart has her feelings for Negi ''way'' lower than most in the "sexual lust" department.
* CoolBigSis: Since her actual brother was stillborn, this is what she tries to be for Negi. Unfortunately sometimes these moments are ruined by her ComedicShotacon tendencies or other characters stealing the spotlight from her.
* CovertPervert: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Ayaka outwardly acts like an overbearing [[LoliconAndShotacon Shotacon]], but her inner thoughts and feelings are far purer. In fact according to Chamo's Love Rankings, her "ero" rating is very low, especially compared to the likes of Nodoka and Eva.
* CryIntoChest: Inverted at the end of Chapter 350, [[spoiler:after burying a box full of pictures of her and Asuna as a memento before she goes on a century-long sleep, realizing they will never see each other again]].
* {{Determinator}}: [[spoiler: Lived to the age of 115 out of sheer willpower [[IWillWaitForYou so she could see Asuna again]]. Sadly, Asuna overslept by thirty years.]]
* DumbBlonde: Zigzagged. Academically she's one of the best students in the entire school, however she's a bit slow to pick up on things. Chisame easily tricks her during Mahorafest with a completely obvious lie, and she doesn't seem to understand the deal between Konoka and Setsuna when every other classmate has already figured it out.
* DynamicEntry: One of her trademarks is running into a room and shouting at the top of her lungs.
* EveryoneHasStandards: When Negi and Asuna have a big fight, Kazumi, Natsumi, and Chizuru all wonder if she's going to take advantage of the situation to get closer to Negi. Ayaka strongly objects as it pains her to see them fighting and opts instead to help resolve their fight. All three girls are quite impressed at how selfless she is.
* {{Fiction 500}}: Singlehandedly sponsored the whole "Battle of Mahora", and flew half the class to Wales on her private jet. Her family also owns a bunch of resort islands.
* FlowersOfFemininity: She's often depicted with a flower background, including in her Pactio card, because she's the sophisticated {{Ojou}} of the class.
* {{Foil}}: The story consistently contrasts her and Asuna. Ayaka likes little boys, while Asuna likes middle-aged men. Ayaka relishes any chance to dress up whether in a bikini or dress, contrasting the more modest Asuna who hates frilly things and showing off her body. Finally, their interactions with Negi completely differ. Ayaka is smitten from the very beginning and rarely changes her stance on him, while Asuna is initially very prickly though she warms up later on.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: Her habitual use of very formal speech patterns goes hand-in-hand with her {{Ojou}} status.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Young, beautiful and a prestigious {{ojou}} with long blonde hair. She's combative around Asuna, but is otherwise quite kind.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: During Asuna's date with Takamichi, she runs into Ayaka while he's using the bathroom. In the middle of their normal squabbling she says 'Unlike you, I have an elegant dinner party to attend with my family.' When Asuna, an orphan, comments that it's nice to have a family Ayaka flinches because her statement had been meant to emphasize the elegant party, not that she'd be attending with her family. She quickly apologizes in case Asuna took it that way since she and Asuna are actually best friends, even if they fight 95% of the time.
* InterclassFriendship: Ayaka was raised in wealth as the {{Ojou}} of the class, contrasting her [[VitriolicBestBuds Vitriolic Best Bud]] Asuna's more grounded upbringing. At least until it's revealed that Asuna is really a magical princess.
* IWillWaitForYou: [[spoiler:When Asuna goes into hibernation to strengthen the Magic World's foundation, Ayaka waited a full century for her to wake up. Unfortunately, Asuna "overslept" by thirty years and [[{{Irony}} Ayaka died precisely the year she was supposed to wake up.]]]]
* JerkassToOne: She's really only unpleasant to Asuna, largely thanks to their [[VitriolicBestBuds dynamic]] and Asuna consistently (and often intentionally) provoking her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: When she's not being a spoiled {{Ojou}}, she shows herself to have strong principles and be genuinely quite caring of others.
* LargeHam: When she's not acting like a ProperLady - or when Asuna presses her BerserkButton - she starts saying and doing everything in an incredibly over-the-top manner. Creator/LauraBailey's performance in the anime just adds to the ham.
* LightningGlare: Frequently gets into these with [[VitriolicBestBuds Asuna]].
* LovingAShadow: It's implied that the reason she's so fixated on Negi is because she thinks of him as being like the little brother who she never met.
* MagicMisfire: Thanks to ThePowerOfLove, she nearly breaks the pactio system and gives Negi a card instead of getting her own.
* MarshmallowHell: Whenever she tightly hugs Negi, she also sandwiches his head in between her boobs.
* NiceGirl: While she does frequently fight with Asuna, she still cares for her deeply as well as the rest of the class. She also ''never'' takes advantage of Negi, even when it would put her in a favorable position.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Her trademark is her loud laugh that resembles that of a haughty noblewoman.
* {{Nosebleed}}: Suffers from this on occasion of seeing Negi in an appearance "surprisingly appealing" to her taste. It also happens during the buildup to her Pactio with Negi.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite being an {{Ojou}}, she's just as ridiculous in her mannerisms as most of Class 3-A. She tries to be a ProperLady, but that's often overshadowed by her interactions with Asuna and Negi.
* OddFriendship: Ayaka is a [[LargeHam hammy]] {{Ojou}} that values [[ProperLady proper manners, looking nice and courtesy]] while Asuna [[BookDumb is a poor student]], doesn't take care of her appearance and has no use for good manners. They're best friends.
* {{Ojou}}: She's the heiress of one of the richest families in the world, carries herself like a princess, and lives in a mansion with many servants.
* PimpedOutDress: When she dresses up, it can be extremely elaborate. And extremely revealing, like during Mahorafest.
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: When they're not acting like VitriolicBestBuds, Ayaka's friendship with Asuna sometimes leans into romantic territory, since Asuna is one of the few people besides Negi for whom Ayaka shows physical affection. Also, near the end of the manga, [[spoiler:Ayaka is heartbroken when Asuna has to go to sleep for a century and clings to life until she dies at 115 years old, all just for a chance to see Asuna one more time which sadly didn't happen because Asuna woke up 30 years later than scheduled]].
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Negi and Kotarō are the same age; she adores Negi and can't stand Kotarō. She explains that she doesn't like Negi because he's an adorable child but because he's an adorable pint-sized gentleman.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: She's so crazy about Negi that getting a BridalCarry from him is enough to give her a {{nosebleed}}.
* StatuesqueStunner: Tall, blond and beautiful. Her looks intimidate more than one classmate.
* SuperGullible: She's far from stupid, but she's quite ignorant in several areas. For example, Chisame has to keep her from following the group at one point and the only thing she can think to say is that Negi will be forced to marry Chao if he loses a contest with her. Not only does she buy it, she also believes Chisame when she says that her {{Magitek}} artifact that brought her and Makie into a virtual world is just a video game and this is totally how they work now, honest.
* TeamMom: Because of her role as the ClassRepresentative, Ayaka can behave like a nagging mother to her classmates. She also wants to spoil the youngest member of the class (Negi).
* TemptingFate: Way back in Chapter 3, Ayaka was bragging about her breast size, saying Negi needed someone with a "motherly figure" to take care of him, daring anyone with a better figure to come closer. Cue Haruna pointing out ''she'' has larger breasts... Immediately followed by Asakura, Mana, Kaede, and Chizuru -- all of whom have even larger breasts in increasing sizes -- all walking into the bath.
* ThroughHisStomach: At one point in the early volumes, Ayaka attempts to further endear herself to Negi with tea and cookies.
* TokenRichStudent: Ayaka is from a ridiculously rich family, and yet she attends a middle-class girls' school. There are at least two other girls at her class with influential families, but Ayaka takes the cake as the one who can make almost anything possible with her money.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Ayaka is the beautiful and girly leader of Class 3-A, while Asuna is the plain and tomboyish "bad girl" of the class.
* TragicStillbirth: Her little brother was stillborn, and it's heavily implied that [[LovingAShadow she projects her feelings for him onto Negi]] (since he would have been around Negi's age if he was alive). Chapter 14 shows that his death is still affecting her, even ten years after the fact (it's even the subject of her ImageSong in the first anime).
* TrueBlueFemininity: Her Pactio card has an image of her wearing an elegant blue dress that is perfect for a ladylike {{Ojou}}.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sweet type. Ayaka is polite and pleasant, but loses her patience very easily around Asuna because their personalities clash often. It's still clear Asuna is her closest friend and one of the most important people in her life.
* UnknownRival: When Asuna arrived as a NewTransferStudent, Ayaka declared that they were rivals. As Asuna was an EmotionlessGirl at arrival, it took her several years to notice.
* UnwittingMuggleFriend: She knows something's up, but Asuna refuses to spill out her secret life involved with magic. She still tries to help Asuna and Negi any way she can. This is {{subverted|trope}} during the Magic World arc where she uses mundane methods to figure out the key points and discover who Evangeline is. Negi then includes her in his plan to save the Magic World.
* UpperClassEquestrian: She is a super wealthy {{Ojou}} who is trained in riding horses - she's in the equestrian club at school and at her house they own a stable of horses she often rides for fun. While chasing Nagi after being affected by a love potion, she even rides a horse through the hallways.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: She keeps her Pactio card in her cleavage.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
** With Asuna. Both shared their childhood as rivals, but hints abound that this is their way of showing their friendship, such as when Asuna literally [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan kicked her out]] of her HeroicBSOD upon realizing that her little brother was stillborn, and Ayaka in turn acted as mediator between Negi and Asuna after they had a falling-out. This is further cemented [[spoiler:at the end of Chapter 350 in a heartrending moment, when she realizes she will never see Asuna again. She lived to 115 out of sheer determination to see Asuna again.]]
** She has a similar relationship with Kotarō, causing everyone to think they get along really well. Whether they do or not is debatable.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Kotarō was very surprised when she told him she's fifteen, since he says she looks way older than that.

[[quoteright:291:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_9191.JPG]]

Of the entire class, Yūna is probably most qualified for the title of "GenkiGirl" -- mischievous and enthusiastic, her charisma translates into her constant role as ringleader of the class's hijinks. Her physical abilities are quite high, but despite being the daughter of a magic teacher she's in the dark about magic, most likely because she's too busy lusting over him to worry about his job. She is not a formal member of Ala Alba, but instead later gets wrapped up in their shenanigans.\
\
She later gains a pactio herself, a pair of magic guns [[AncestralWeapon inherited from her mother]]: ''Iris Tormentum'' - the Seven-Color Guns. They allow her to enchant her bullets with all sorts of magic effects, actually making her quite useful in combat, even though she joined the front lines late in the series and can only handle mid-level foes.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: The guns from her pactio aren't particularly special. What's unique about them is that they can fire a huge variety of ammunition, some of it stuff that even Negi has never seen. Case in point, Yūna used a ''Spirit Form Canceller Bullet'' on Homura in one scene, forcing Homura out of her Salamander form for a short period.
* AncestralWeapon: It's hinted that Iris Tormentum could be her mother's.
* BadassLongcoat: Her pactio card outfit has a long, light brown coat to fit the overall image.
* ChildrenDoTheHousework: She makes breakfast for her father when she visits him and gets concerned when he casually mentions he usually eats instant curry. Since she's currently living at the school dorms, Yūna thinks her father can't look after himself and considers moving back with him, but he tells her not to.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She becomes jealous whenever her father is seen with another woman.
* TheCoatsAreOff: She started the battle with the Fatettes with her BadassLongcoat on. Then Ako gave her that buttshot power boost. Note the absence of said longcoat when she gains BulletTime as a result and shoots Koyomi in the face.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: She has dark brown hair and eyes.
* DCupDistress: She is annoyed about her bust growing since it gets in the way of playing basketball.
* DaddysGirl: She is very fond of her father. Maybe a little ''too'' fond.
* {{Expy}}: While not similar to her in personality, her name is almost the same as that of Yūna from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' and she dresses similarly and dual wields pistols in the same manner.
* FanServicePack: Earlier in the story she had a more average bust. She complains about a growth spurt and by the end she's rather stacked.
* FatherIWantToMarryMyBrother: She has been saying she wants to become her father's bride ever since she was in kindergarten. Her father would like her to quit it as that stopped being cute after she graduated elementary school, now it's only creepy.
* GenkiGirl: Her mother Yuuko apparently encouraged this aspect of her personality, and ''Za Kido'' shows it.
* GunsAkimbo: Dual wields pistols with her pactio active. During the climax of the [[SchoolFestival MahoraFest arc]], she's shown to be wielding magical guns with a high degree of skill.
* {{Gunslinger}}: She tends to favor close range combat and speed, especially when working in conjunction with Ako.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Granted, she was boosted by Ako's artifact, but Yūna actually managed to hit a speed-enhanced Koyomi with her guns.
* LargeHamTitle: She sometimes gets overly excited and likes being referred to as "Yūna☆Kid"[[note]]Alternatively, "Yūna*Kid" for those whose computers don't support complex LuckyCharmsTitle-style symbols.[[/note]] or just "The Kid."
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Yūna's father keeps her magical heritage a secret, though he did intend to tell her when she got older.
* MissingMom: Yuuko died when Yūna was just five old. According to Takane, she was born and raised in Mundus Magicus, and was a [[ActionMom goverment agent]] sent to Megalomesembira on an operation related to the current crisis, which was where and how she died.
* PaperThinDisguise: She puts on a lame mask and doesn't cover up her distinctive hair when attempting to trick Yue and Nodoka into giving up their badges.
* PassionateSportsGirl: She's very athletic and plays basketball.
* PursuingParentalPerils: [[spoiler:The WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue reveals that she has since followed her late mother's profession as an agent of Megalomesembria.]]
* {{Stripperific}}: Her Pactio outfit exposes a lot of choice skin to little practical effect. If anything, what she ''does'' wear would get in the way.
* SurrogateSoliloquy: She talks to the picture of her mother.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:In Chapter 310, she takes a petrification dart for Makie, with [[TakenForGranite predictable results.]] She gets better by Chapter 332.]]
* TellMeAboutMyMother: A variant. She never knew nor asked, but [[spoiler:after being deeply involved in the magic business, Takane decides it's high time she learns the truth and directly asks Takane if she knows about the exact circumstances behind Yuuko's death and Takane tells her that as well.]]
* TomboyishPonytail: Yūna wears her hair in a side ponytail, while also having a love of sports and acting more boyish than her more girly friends.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Fit, outgoing, and plays sports. She also is a surprisingly good cook, has neat domestic skills and likes to go shopping.
* YoungGun: During the Mahorafest battle she showed some excellent skills with the magical weaponry and she is, of course, very immature. She later gets a gun from her pactio with magical ammunition and proves quite valuable during the battle with the Fatettes.

Ako is one of the more normal girls in the class and hangs out with the cheerleaders, who are also part of their band Dekopin Rocket. She has some major insecurities regarding the huge scar on her back, the origin of which is unknown. Furthermore, she's aware that she's nothing special, which is pretty detrimental to her self esteem. Upon seeing Negi's teenaged form, she develops a massive crush without knowing his true identity.\
\
She was dragged along to the Magic World and had a continuation of her Mahorafest mini arc. She later gains a pactio of her own from Negi, which is a giant magic needle which she can use to numb pain and heal her allies, give them a SuperSerum, or mess with their perception.
----
* ACupAngst: She wishes her chest was a little bigger and she's quite jealous of Yūna's growth spurt.
* AfraidOfBlood: She's not good with the sight of blood. When she accidentally hits her head, she doesn't even notice until she sees she's bleeding, at which point she passes out.
* AnimalEaredHeadband: The outfit of her Pactio card has cat ears and a tail.
* BlemishedBeauty: She feels insecure about her physical appearance because of the scar on her back, but looks cute regardless of it.
* CuteSportsClubManager: She's the manager for one of Mahora's soccer teams, [[AllThereInTheManual not that it ever actually comes up in the story]] (WordOfGod is that she joined because of her crush on the team's captain). Aside from ''one'' moment in Volume 1's dodgeball match, the manga saddles her with manifold other gimmicks (though some early fanfics lump her in with Makie, Yuna, and Akira as a fellow "jock").
* DudeHesLikeInAComa: Ako spends several panels battling over this when she watches over Negi.
* GiantMedicalSyringe: This is what her artifact is, and judging by her comrades' reactions to when she jabs it in their butt, it hurts.
* GoGoEnslavement: She, Akira, and Natsumi are forced to wear {{French Maid Outfit}}s and shock collars after selling themselves into slavery.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She has a ton of self-esteem issues. She considers herself plain and unimportant.
* HospitalHottie: She's a nurse's assistant and has an artifact based around the idea, complete with fanservicey outfit.
* HowDoIShotWeb: She wasn't sure what her artifact's power was at first. Fortunately, she figured it out before the big battle.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Poor Ako has issues with just about everything about herself, which makes her think it's impossible she will seriously have a chance with "Nagi".
* InterfaceScrew: Her artifact can inject a drug that inverts the victim's senses, making it quite difficult for them to move.
* ItWasAGift: Negi (as his "cousin" Nagi) won a pair of bracelets when he and Ako participated in a Mahora Festival couples contest and got second place. Ako still wears her bracelet in the Magic World, and Negi stops his UnstoppableRage for a moment when he sees Ako's bracelet, after he almost attacked Ako in his demonic form.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Frequently refers to herself as a "side character" as opposed to main characters like Negi. People tell her that she's the main character of her own story, but she acts like a side character there too.
* LoveHurts: She's utterly crushed when she finds out "Nagi" is Negi magically aged-up, but she gets over it.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: She develops a crush on Negi in his teenage alter-ego "Nagi".
* MadeASlave: She, Akira, and Natsumi sell themselves into slavery shortly after their arrival in the Magical World to pay for her expensive medicine.
* MagicEnhancement: Her Pactio artifact is a HUGE syringe that injects a SuperSerum to increase the person's speed/strength/stamina.
* {{Meido}}: She's turned into slave waitress in the Magic World, at which point she gets a meido like outfit.
* NiceGirl: Good natured and all around pleasant, Ako is the very definition of nice.
* ScarsAreUgly: She has a large scar on her back and is so ashamed by it that she freaks out when "Nagi" sees it. [[spoiler:According to the epilogue, she later has it healed.]]
* ShowerOfAngst: Has one after she finds out that the boy she loves doesn't actually exist.
* SlaveCollar: After selling herself into slavery, she gets a collar. It doubles as a ShockCollar that can give her electric shocks in the event of attempted escapes or the like.
* StatusBuff: Her artifact's power is to buff someone's senses and reaction times.
* SupportPartyMember: She doesn't have any outright combat skill, but can instead buff her allies or debuff her foes.
* TheUnreveal: The audience never learns how she got that massive scar on her back.
* YouWontFeelAThing: Claims her needle isn't as painful as it sounds, but some of the members have a different opinion on that.

Natsumi is Chizuru's rather plain roommate and first takes a real role in the story when she stumbles upon Kotarō in his dog form, after which she takes him home and becomes his surrogate sister figure. Or at least, that's how it worked for Kotarō, while Natsumi actually ends up developing a crush on the boy.\
\
She stows away to the Magical World and ends up with Akira and Ako before continuing her Kotarō focused subplot. She eventually makes a pactio with Kotarō, becoming his first ''ministra''. Natsumi's artifact, ''Adjutor Solitarius'' (Lonely Stagehand) is a mask that, when covering her eye, makes her completely undetectable by magical or physical means, even if she's right in front of someone's face. She can extend this effect to whoever she holds hands with, making it an extremely useful ability.
----
* ACupAngst: She views herself as rather plain, especially compared to her busty roommates Ayaka and Chizuru. Even when comparing to one of the more average girls like Chisame she laments that none of them are middle school sized.
* AgeGapRomance: Kotarō is five years younger than her. While that's not a big difference, he's a ten-year-old, so Natsumi is in denial about having a crush on a kid. [[spoiler:They get married when Natsumi is 27 and Kotarō is 22, so the age gap doesn't matter anymore by that point.]]
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Kotarō. She's a {{Tsundere}} who sucks at admitting how she feels. Kotarō is the classic {{Chaste|Hero}} IdiotHero and an ObliviousToLove JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
* CannotSpitItOut: She quickly develops a crush on Kotarō, but sucks at admitting it, let alone expressing how she feels.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Whenever she sees Kotarō with other girls, she gets jealous and begins comparing herself to them.
* DudeHesLikeInAComa: Natsumi tries to kiss a sleeping Kotarō for a Pactio, but gets interrupted.
* FieryRedhead: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. While Natsumi is a redhead, she's usually meek and calm. She only turns fiery around Kotarō.
* FirstKiss: She forms a pactio with Kotarō during the Governor's Ball after a lengthy chase scene.
* FromRoommatesToRomance: Natsumi has a crush on Kotarō, the [[HalfHumanHybrid dog demon hybrid]] that she and Chizuru took in as their roommate. Kotarō thinks of Natsumi as part of his new family, unaware of Natsumi's discomfort with feeling attracted to a preteen boy. [[spoiler:According to the epilogue, Natsumi ends up married to Kotarō many years later.]]
* TheGenericGirl: Her physical development is behind a lot of the class, she doesn't have any special talents and she doesn't stand out much, to her dismay.
* GoGoEnslavement: She, Ako, and Akira are forced to wear {{French Maid Outfit}}s and shock collars after selling themselves into slavery.
* GrewASpine: She begins the Magic World arc as something of a coward, but during the final battle she hardens her resolve and vows to do what's necessary to assist Ala Alba, even if she's scared.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Her denials of her blatant crush on Kotarō only make it more obvious.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She has poor self-esteem regarding her looks and charm.
* ImaginaryLoveTriangle: She's painfully aware that she's a completely average girl when compared to her classmates, so she's prone to seeing imaginary love rivals whenever Kotarō interacts with other girls. She even thinks of Ayaka as a love rival even though she clearly can't stand Kotarō and is completely infatuated with Negi instead.
* InconvenientAttraction: Natsumi freaks out at the thought that having a crush on Kotarō makes her a [[LoliconAndShotacon shotacon]] like Ayaka.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Poor Natsumi keeps comparing herself to all the girls Kotarō is friends with and wondering how she even holds a candle to them. While this is justified with more developed girls like Kaede and Chizuru, she also compares herself to someone like Yue who has her own mountain of insecurities.
* InterspeciesRomance: With Kotarō, since he is a half-Dog Demon. She gets some conflicting feelings when Kotarō goes full wolf form.
* InvisibilityCloak: Her artifact, Adjutor Solitarius, is touted as the ultimate disguise, as it allows Natsumi to blend in with the scenery, completely undetectable to others.
* InvisibleIntrovert: Natsumi [[TheNondescript doesn't stand out much]], often fading into the background while stuck in a class full of more colorful girls. As such, [[InvisibilityCloak Adjutor Solitarius]] makes her [[PerceptionFilter literally unnoticeable]] as a superpower.
* LoveAtFirstSight: When she sees Kotarō's (naked) human form for the first time, Natsumi blushes and thinks he looks really cool.
* MadeASlave: She, Ako, and Akira sell themselves into slavery shortly after their arrival in the Magical World to pay for a very ill Ako's expensive medicine.
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: Natsumi and Chizuru find Kotarō in dog form when he passed out in the middle of the road. After they take him to their dorm, Kotarō turns back to human form and takes Natsumi hostage due to being scared. Despite this rocky start, Natsumi feels almost immediately attracted to Kotarō.
* {{Meido}}: She's forced to work as a maid when she's MadeASlave in the Magic World and dresses accordingly.
* NiceGirl: Leaving aside her low self-esteem issues, Natsumi is a good girl.
* TheNondescript: Natsumi tends to have a hard time standing out among her more remarkable classmates (especially her roommates, who are both [[{{Fiction500}} absurdly rich]] and [[ACupAngst stacked]]).
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:Natsumi and Kotarō are the only couple that is confirmed to be together in the epilogue.]]
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Her section of the epilogue indicated that she went back to the Magical World to hunt down Kotarō and ended up going on an adventure larger than her summer one. When she finally met Kotarō again, she managed to punch him seven times in a surprise attack.
* PerceptionFilter: [[InvisibilityCloak Adjutor Solitarius]] moves Natsumi and anyone she's touching into the mental blind spot of everyone around her.
* PerformanceAnxiety: Her character profile mentions this as one of the things she ''likes''.
* PervertedSniffing: Chizuru mentions Natsumi has been smelling Kotarō's shirts.
* RedheadsAreUncool: She dislikes both her red hair and freckles. She's not really treated like a loser, but she's TheGenericGirl of the WackyHomeroom and thinks of herself as next to worthless because of it.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Due to her status as TheGenericGirl, Natsumi doesn't have many traits that define her as more than "the girl with a crush on Kotarō".
* SlaveCollar: After selling herself into slavery, she gets a collar that can [[ShockCollar give her electric shocks]] in the event of attempted escapes or the like.
* StalkerWithACrush: Natsumi develops a habit of spying Kotarō from afar whenever he's hanging out with other girls. Natsumi actually ended up getting transported to the Magic World because she was following Kotarō in secret. According to the epilogue, when Kotarō ran off to do some training, Natsumi chased after him all the way to the Magic World again.
* TearsOfFear: As she comes face to face with Fate (who doesn't notice her presence due to her artifact), he wrecks the platform they were just standing on. As the rest of the group recovers, poor Natsumi is reduced to tears due to the complete terror she feels. She quickly recovers and decides that she'll do her best, fear bedamned.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sweet type. Natsumi is a NiceGirl at heart, but she's also way too immature and embarrassed to come to terms with the fact that she has a crush on Kotarō because she doesn't want to think she's a shotacon, so she chooses to punch him instead of dealing with her feelings.
* YouthfulFreckles: She has freckles and isn't happy about it.

[[folder:Makie Sasaki]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YuiHorie (Japanese) and Creator/KateOxley (English)
!!!'''Portrayed by:''' Yuri Kawase
[[quoteright:291:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_515.JPG]]

Makie is a sweet, bubbly girl and one of the first to develop a serious crush on Negi after seeing he was seriously pursuing his dreams and not just a cute little mascot. She's an [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower impossibly talented]] gymnast in regards to her ability to utilize ribbons in her performances. She is not particularly bright, but she has a very supportive personality.\
\
Makie was one of the stowaways to the Magic World. She later gains a pactio from Negi, and hers is unique in that it comes with ''five'' separate artifacts - an infinitely extending ribbon, a ball that can explode on contact, a pair of clubs that can grant her strength and change in size, and hula rings, though it is unknown what they do. It makes her versatile in the few combat situations she takes part in, but she is too inexperienced and lacks true strength or skill.
----
* ACupAngst: Having a busty girl like Yūna as a friend can make one feel intimidated.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Negi cheering her up when she was down was one of the reasons she fell in love with him.
* BerserkButton: Being called childish really sets her off. She even chews out ''Evangeline'' for calling her as such.
* BookDumb: She's rather ditzy and represents Baka Pink of the Baka Rangers (the girls with the lowest grades in Class 3-A). During the Magic World arc, she begins learning a surprising amount of its history and after the arc ends [[CharacterDevelopment she begins studying seriously, raising her grades in the process.]]
* BubblyWaitress: Forced to take a job in order to survive in the Magic World, Makie becomes a waitress. Since she was already a GenkiGirl to begin with, she naturally becomes one of these.
* BuildingSwing: When she was briefly vampirized by Evangeline, she would swing around with her ribbon.
* CharacterDevelopment: Having been seen by others as childish, Makie starts taking her life more seriously and begins to improve her grades and overall demeanor.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: With regards to her skill with that gymnastics ribbon. For example, she can use it to catch balloon strings or make nets, though the net fails to capture Asuna.
* CheeryPink: Baka Pink is indeed a cheery girl, and has a GenkiGirl personality to match.
* CosmeticCatastrophe: She tends to put on make-up a tad too enthusiastically whenever she tries to on her own.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Pink hair and pink eyes to match.
* TheDitz: She's rather spacy and uninterested in school, giving her the title of Baka Pink.
* GeniusDitz: She knows exactly who her rivals are. After she explains to Yue that her feelings are rather obvious.
-->'''Yue:''' "W-Wh-Why can you give such a complete analysis of someone's history like that?!"
* GenkiGirl: Describes herself as a 'overflowing with energy type teenage girl'.
* GirlishPigtails: She wears her hair in twintails.
* GlobalIgnorance: Yūna says Makie can't find Germany, Italy or France on a map, and thinks that Switzerland is near England and that Australia is around Europe.
* HotTeacher: In the epilogue, after she graduated from university she ended up becoming Mahora's PE teacher. All the male students seem to have a crush on her.
* IKnowMaddenKombat: You'll be amazed at the number of things she can do with that gymnastics ribbon.
* TheMatchmaker: Interestingly, while she's fully intent on winning Negi for herself, she's also very adamant in helping Yue confess her own love for him.
* MsFanservice: That SensualSpandex isn't just for easy movement.
* NiceGirl: Makie is exceedingly nice and despite being in direct competition with her for Negi's feelings, she actually encourages Yue to confess to him because she feels that she's [[TookALevelInBadass worked so hard]] that she deserves the chance.
* NoSell: Immune to the LotusEaterMachine because she is so cheerful that she is completely satisfied with her life.
-->"[[BrickJoke I-I can't think of any worries~"]]
* OddFriendship: Late into the series she strikes one up with Yue. They both lampshade how different they actually are and how despite being classmates they haven't really talked all that much.
* PassionateSportsGirl: She loves gymnastics and takes them quite seriously. She's a member of a fairly gender neutral sport and isn't particularly intelligent, though.
* PleaseWakeUp: To Negi during their confrontation with Poyo, when he's stuck in Cosmo Entelecheia.
* ThePowerOfLove: She and several of the other stowaways learn that their positive feelings for Negi can alleviate his [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Dark Negi]] mode.
* RoseHairedSweetie: She's almost perpetually optimistic and cheerful.
* SensualSpandex: Well, she ''is'' a gymnast.
* SmarterThanYouLook: She's actually capable of doing decently. She picks up the geography and history of the Magic World quite quickly, startling Yūna. She builds off this and ends up getting some decent test scores with practice.
* SuperGullible: Chisame has to keep her from following the group at one point and the only thing she can think to say is that Negi will be forced to marry Chao if he loses a contest with her. Not only does she buy it, she also believes Chisame when she says that her {{Magitek}} artifact that brought her and Ayaka into a virtual world is just a video game and this is totally how they work now, honest. Chisame is relieved to find that they're hopelessly ignorant and a complete ditz respectively.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She absolutely hates slimy things.

Akira is one of the gentlest members of the cast and particularly enjoys helping others. While most of the class is energetic and difficult to control, Akira is always calm and quiet. She's quite fond of Negi, the nature of which is [[ShipTease left vague.]] She's an excellent swimmer.\
\
She stows away to the Magic World, where she ends up getting a great deal more focus and speaks much more than normal. Late in the story, she gains a pactio from Negi that allows her to travel between bodies of water instantly, in a world where teleportation magic is rare and difficult.
----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: She gets her Pactio in the very last volume, and there is no longer any serious threat to fight by that time so it's only PlayedForLaughs.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's tall, a StatuesqueStunner, very quiet and has very long dark hair.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She really loves helping people when they're troubled. Look no further than the time Negi lost his magical ring in the pool, and some of the girls teased him into getting the same from them. Misora (whom Akira caught up personally despite her SuperSpeed artifact), Yuuna, Haruna, and Fumika all got dunked into the pool for their troubles; it even made Kaede, Ku Fei, and Mana pay attention.
* BlankWhiteEyes: When she goes berserk on the girls teasing Negi in her DayInTheLimelight. She looks pretty sad while doing it too.
* CannotSpitItOut:
** She can't bring herself to tell Ako that Nagi the gladiator is actually Negi in magical disguise.
** There's also strong hints that she's crushing on Negi, but keeps quiet about it.
* CoolBigSis: She seems to default to a supportive big sister attitude, especially to Ako. Even Negi isn't immune, though.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Chapter 166 is a NoDialogueEpisode, as a nod to her role as TheQuietOne. She helps Negi retrieve his casting focus ring. She has another one in the brief calm after the Ball where she speaks to Negi about Makie, Ako and Yuuna.
* GodivaHair: She bumps into Negi at the bath while swimming around. Her hair covers anything too important.
* GoGoEnslavement: She, Ako, and Natsumi are forced to wear {{French Maid Outfit}}s and shock collars after selling themselves into slavery.
* HimeCut: She has blunt bangs, hip-length sidelocks, and extremely long straight hair worn in a ponytail. Like Chachamaru, Akira's hairstyle reflects her YamatoNadeshiko traits.
* IKnowMaddenKombat: Uses her skills as a swimmer in a dodgeball game.
* LoveInformant: She tries to make Negi aware that Ako and Makie have crushes on him. He doesn't get it until Akira properly explains the kind of "like" she means. [[ObliviousToLove Negi becomes shocked.]]
* MadeASlave: She, Ako, and Natsumi sell themselves into slavery shortly after their arrival in the Magical World to pay for a very ill Ako's expensive medicine.
* MakingASplash: In the first anime, her Pactio gives her the power to fight demons with a water attack.
* MatchmakerCrush: She's heavily implied to be attracted to Negi herself, but is more interested in her friends getting a shot. Chamo insinuates this in Chapter 348, which she [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial tries to deny]].
* {{Meido}}: While working as a slave, she's basically a maid and has appropriate attire.
* MythicalMotifs: Her Pactio card portrays her as a mermaid and her Artifact gives her an artificial mermaid tail.
* NiceGirl: One of the nicest and kindest characters in the series.
* NotQuiteTheRightThing: She can't bring herself to tell Ako that Nagi and Negi are the same person for fear of hurting her and destroying her emotional supports. Ako finds out about it on her own after she's had time to grow much more attached to Nagi, meaning she's much more hurt than if Akira had just told Ako or let Chisame do it.
* PowerFist: Her Artifact comes with a pair of heavy gauntlets.
* TheQuietOne: Early on, she's the student who talks the least right after Zazie. Heck, there was one chapter told from her perspective, and it didn't have a line of dialogue. She became less quiet during the Magic World arc.
* ReusedCharacterDesign: She looks a lot like Motoko Aoyama from ''Manga/LoveHina'' with longer hair.
* SeashellBra: In her pactio outfit she has a seashell bra as part of the mermaid theme.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Minor example. She figures out that "Nagi" is Negi almost instantly because of Kotarō's magical disguise and Negi referring to Ako as his student, but can be seen stopping herself from thinking or asking about it because the implications are pretty bad. She's not very good at lying to herself, however.
* ShipperOnDeck: Pushes Negi into having a pactio with Ako, Makie and Yuuna so the first two get a chance to kiss him and that he'll take the third more seriously.
* SlaveCollar: After selling herself into slavery, she must wear a collar around the neck. It's also a ShockCollar that can apply a shock if her owner desires, but they're not supposed to and can get in legal trouble for it. Or in literal MamaBear trouble.
* StatuesqueStunner: One of the tallest and oldest looking girls.
* TeamMom: She helps keep order among the stowaway girls due to being the only really mature one of the bunch.
* {{Teleportation}}: Her pactio allows her to teleport through water for distances of up to three hundred meters at once. This does not have any kind of mana cost, allowing her to use it [[TeleportSpam rapidly]] and without tiring.
* WaterIsWomanly: Akira is one of the most ladylike, calm, and caring girls in the class. As a swimmer, she's associated with water. Her Pactio provides her with powers closely tied into water along with a mermaid theme.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She's quiet, supportive and surprisingly strong-willed.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: She looks at least five years older than her actual age.

Zazie is the one member of Class 2/3-A that's gotten almost no CharacterDevelopment at all. From what little information is given on her, she [[SilentBob almost never speaks]], appears to be some sort of circus performer, and has a number of weird black ghost blobs that accompany her everywhere. She can also apparently see Sayo. Her classmates are aware of her oddities and don't really know what to think of her.
----
* CircusOfFear: She performs in what is called the "Nightmare Circus". Given what we've seen of the company she keeps, one can't help but wonder how much of that name is an act.
* CleavageWindow: A cutout in the chest area is part of her Harlequin outfit.
* CuteMonsterGirl: She's shown to have a demon tail and wings in her Pactio outfit.
* CuteMute: She almost never speaks before the end of the Magic World. Classmates are surprised to hear her even let out a few words.
* FacialMarkings: A teardrop over one eye, and what looks like a scar over the other. It's unclear if what's on her face is paint or just how she looks.
* HappyHarlequinHat: Though her hat is one color, two flaps, no bells. It still has the design, though.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: The only differences between her and her twin sister Poyo are the shape of their eyes, and their facial markings are on opposite sides.
* IdiotHair: She has one, though she doesn't really come off as an idiot.
* ISeeDeadPeople: She can apparently see Sayo.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Even her other classmates suspect there's something up with her. Like Sayo, it indicates that she's not exactly human.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:She's a demon princess.]]
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: To signify her [[spoiler:demonic]] nature.
* TheQuietOne: Even with as little screentime as she gets she's still obviously the quietest person in the class. Near the end of the Magic World she becomes chattier.
* SexyJester: She's a clown/mime girl with an talent for acrobatics, animal training and juggling. Her outfit for doing these things was clearly meant to invoke this trope.
* SignificantWhiteHairDarkSkin: Zazie is the mysterious student in Class 3-A, with her dark skin and unique natural white hair making her stand out more than the other girls in the class. [[spoiler:Late in the series, it's revealed she's actually a demon and a princess from the demon world.]]
* SilentBob: Ayaka, at least, can understand her perfectly ''over the phone'' despite her not saying a word. When asked how, Akamatsu said "It seems to be an obvious power of {{class representative}}s to understand the intentions of their classmates".
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She has a sister Negi calls "Poyo" who looks indentical to her.
* TaremeEyes: Unlike her sister "Poyo", who has harsher looking TsurimeEyes.
* VisibleSilence: For the bulk of the manga, her speech bubbles are just "..."
* WingedHumanoid: She has a large pair of demon wings in her unused Pactio outfit.
* WolverineClaws: She's shown with massive claws early in the series.

[[folder:Satomi Hakase]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MaiKadowaki (Japanese) and Creator/JaymeWestman (English)

Class 2/3-A's ''other'' resident supergenius after Chao, Hakase is basically a MadScientist. Apparently aware of the existence of magic long before the series started, Hakase is primarily interested in its scientific applications and the development of {{Magitek}}, resulting in Chachamaru, who, with Evangeline's help, was developed as a joint product of magic and science.\
\
Personality-wise, Hakase is somewhat obsessive about her work, often working so late she simply falls asleep in the lab. She also approaches things from a very logical perspective, meaning that she often [[InnocentlyInsensitive fails to consider how her experiments might affect others personally]].
----
* AgeGapRomance: [[spoiler:Assuming the Megalomesembrian senator she married was Gödel]], that means her husband in the epilogue is old enough to be her father.
* BookSmart: She's a top student with academic performance only second to Chao's.
* BrainyBrunette: She's black-haired and one of the most intelligent students in 3-A.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Comes with being a MadScientist, but best demonstrated at the martial arts tournament, where one of her robots was competing.
-->'''Hakase:''' Unfortunately, his weapons systems aren't lethal...
-->'''Commentator:''' ''Unfortunately?!''
* ForeheadOfDoom: Ties her hair back, presumably to keep it out of her eyes. This leaves her with a big, wide forehead.
* ForScience: In any given situation, anything she does is most likely for this reason.
* GadgeteerGenius: She built Chachamaru and appears to have all sorts of bizarre gadgets stashed around such as the weird backpack thing with multiple arms.
* GeniusSlob: She sleeps in her lab sometimes and leaves her underwear lying around, which gets comments from the guy scientists who share the lab.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: She tends to get carried away by her scientific mind and search for knowledge, which leads to her unintentionally disregarding others' feelings. One time, Hakase actually made Chachamaru cry when she checked her memory against her wishes to find out who was the one she liked.
* LastNameBasis: Everyone calls her Hakase not because they're being formal but rather because it's a pun: Hakase is a homonym for professor.
* MadScientist: She claims she sold her soul to science and can get quite carried away.
* MotherlyScientist: While her ForScience attitude gets in the way sometimes, Hakase really does seem to view Chachamaru as her daughter, which is first hinted during her [[ADayInTheLimelight highlight chapter]]. This is practically laid out in the open for the readers when she starts mothering a broken and battered Chachamaru after being torn apart by Quartum. She tends to get weird whenever she tries to show her affection, though.
* OffscreenRomance: In the epilogue, Hakase is implied to have married [[spoiler:Kurt Gödel]], of all people. The audience never gets to even see these two together. There's only a brief implication that Negi would introduce them to each other near the end.
* PunnyName: Using AlternateCharacterReading, ''hakase'' can mean "professor".
* SheCleansUpNicely: Normally very unconcerned with her looks, when Evangeline decides to dress her up she's surprisingly cute.
* ShipperOnDeck: She becomes supportive of Chachamaru's crush on Negi once she finds out about it. She even made a child body for Chachamaru to match Negi.
* SmartPeopleBuildRobots: The second smartest student in the grade and Chachamaru's other creator.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: She's one of the two {{Teen Genius}}es in 3-A, the other being Chao, and is one of the few students who wear the glasses.
* SoProudOfYou: [[ItMakesSenseInContext When Chachamaru punches her in the face due to a breach of privacy]] in chapter 75.
* TeenGenius: She has the second best grades (behind Chao) and wonders if her work with Chachamaru could earn her a Nobel Prize.
* UnkemptBeauty: She's unconcerned regarding her appearance and just sleeps when she drops. Her hair is styled to not get in the way, she dresses in odd clothes and her attitude generally isn't doing her any favors either. When Evangeline dresses her up, however, she's shown to be quite cute.
* WallOfText: Her rant about robot love:
-->"I tell you, that's impossible! It just can't happen! Eva-san's automatons are robots with their anima magically ensouled! Did you ''hear'' me just then?! "Ensouled!" How unscientific is that?! Of all things - love!! Love, the one emotion that defies all rational thought and explanation!! Am I to become a philosopher, then? Am I to unravel one of the greatest mysteries of the human condition?! For an artificial intelligence to even ''experience'' such a thing - to fall into the realm of the ''subjective'' rather than the ''objective'' - that can lead only to one, inevitable conclusion - that Chachamaru has become ''self-aware!'' When one can monitor one's internal thought patterns with an 'inner eye' - that is self-awareness! We're talking ''meta-consciousness'' here! There's no scientific rationale for ''that!!'' Chachamaru was never ''intended'' to develop such a thing.. then again - then again - when it comes to ''emotions'', who can say what is or ''isn't'' rational?! To be ''human'' is to have ''emotions'', and to have emotions is to have ''love''. And, once there's ''love'', he, why not throw ''reproductive endocrinology'' into the mix! I mean, why not, right?! And ''reproduction'' means ''death'' - which is all well and good if we're talking about ''replicants'', but we're not - we're talking about ''robots''! Robots don't have emotion - they just ''can't''. Or could it be that - maybe, just maybe! - it's only the ghost of an emotion, generated by her auto-learning program...? Still - even so - from a strictly ''methodological'' standpoint - it's all too bloody ''subjective'' for a scientist to wrap her mind around, don't you think? Science is absolute!! It's... ohmigawd, what am I ''saying'', it sounds like I've ''given up!'' This isn't good - it's ''not good'', I tell you! - Since ''when'' has the lack of an ''easy answer'' been an excuse to... For what did I sell ''my soul'' to science if not to ''answer'' those very same ''hard questions?!'' Was it the magic based power system that Eva-san gave me which caused an unforeseen side-effect on her systems?! No. ''No!'' I can't accept that. That's just another ''easy answer'' - that's what ''that'' is!! Then again, there is that brother-sister team at M.I.T. that supposedly engineered [[Manga/AILoveYou an artificial intelligence capable of independent emotion]], so ''maybe''..."

Satsuki is one of the few mature students in class 3-A and both knows what she wants and knows how she'll get it. She's an [[SupremeChef excellent cook]] and helps run Chao Bao Zi, which is something of a safe ground due to her popularity with both staff and students, who do not wish to make her angry by picking fights at her food stand.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Is commonly drawn with a Koala behind her.
* ArtShift: In the anime, she was initially drawn as a rather chubby girl compared to the rest of the class. This didn't last long.
* BrownNote: Manages to immediately calm a group of fighting rival university clubs simply by telling them to stop. She's that nice.
* CatchAFallingStar: Catches Negi and Chao in her ''flying tramcar restaurant''. It was Chao who built that ability in, but still.
* CharacterShilling: She gets most of an entire chapter devoted to people talking about how great she is. Even Evangeline pops in out of nowhere to say that she's the only student she admires. Then she disappears for most of the rest of the manga.
* ChubbyChef: She has an affinity for cooking, and is easily the chubbiest of her classmates.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: While she was always intended to be chubby, the earliest chapters and the first anime depicted her as quite a bit chubbier than the design seen in her card above.
* GirlishPigtails: Wears her hair in pigtails.
* TheHeart: Very good at calming tense situations and can even [[WhatTheHellHero talk Evangeline out of doing mean things.]]
* LovedByAll: The only member of 3-A to be admired by Evangeline. Naturally the rest of the class is pretty fond of her too.
* NiceGirl: Very much so. She loves cooking for the class and her teacher when she realizes he's feeling down.
* SpeechBubbles: She actually speaks without them in most of her dialogue. Whenever she does use a speech bubble, it's more for an action (like smiling) or to make a very important remark.
* SupremeChef: So much that a single sip of her soup can make you go from a tired wreck to HotBlooded. The title on her card even translates to "fabulous cook".
* TastesLikeFriendship: Loved by everyone on campus for her cooking ability. Even Eva admires her.
* WhatTheHellHero: With her quiet disapproval she's capable of calling out the entire class and getting them to realize that [[HeelRealization they're being huge jerks]].

Misora is one of the mage students at Mahora, though apparently only because her parents want her to be. She works under Sister Shakti as an apprentice. She's fond of pranks, gossiping and pretending she has nothing to do with what's going on.\
\
She has a pactio with Cocone that grants her a pair of shoes that give her super speed, which she uses almost exclusively to run away from danger.
----
* ACupAngst: She's rather annoyed when Yūna complains about her growing breasts.
* AnimalEyes: Despite not being any sort of animal, Misora gains cat eyes sometimes.
* BlatantLies: "Kasuga Misora? I have no idea who that is. I'm just a mysterious sister!"
* BoyishShortHair: Short hair for a hyperactive {{tomboy}}.
* ChurchMilitant: She goes around dressed as a nun when doing mage work, which she treats as a part-time job.
* ExactWords: During the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, she finds a loophole in Mana's declaration to let no one pass who doesn't have an entrance ticket. She quickly reveals two tickets for herself and Cocone, that were given to her by the Narutaki twins, forcing Mana to let her pass.
* HiddenDepths: Misora is surprisingly good at reading other people, and if presented with a serious dilemma, she'll give a thoughtful answer to it.
* IGotYouCovered: With Asuna, Setsuna, and Kotarō to help Negi clear a path to Chao.
* LovableCoward: Whenever she runs into danger, she runs right away from it again.
* NaughtyNuns: She's forced into a mini-skirted habit as part of an InstantCosplaySurprise. [[NunTooHoly Not that her true habit is much better]] ([[ProperTightsWithASkirt though as seen on her Pactio card, her Pactio habit is somewhat more conservative]]).
* NunTooHoly: She's irresponsible, a gossip, teases people and is quite the coward. This is not without consequence and she harbors a fear of Sister Shakti as a result.
* PrecisionFStrike: From chapter 320: "I don't think so, [[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch bitch]]!"
* RunningGag: Whenever she shows up as a magic nun, she denies her identity, despite other characters instantly identifying her.
* SprintShoes: Her artifact is a pair of shoes that lets her run really fast. Run away, for the most part.
* SuperSpeed: Her artifact shoes allow her to run at an incredibly fast speed.
* TerribleArtist: Her "drawing" of the attacking giant robots during [=MahoraFest=] is pretty crappy, especially when Cocone checks her own drawing, which is far more accurate and detailed.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: Does this as a PrecisionFStrike in chapter 320 during a BigDamnHeroes moment.
* WalkOnWater: Her magical running sneakers make her so fast that she can run across water.
* WisdomFromTheGutter: In the confessional chapters immediately after the [=MahoraFest=], she is mistaken for a local priest and [[SureLetsGoWithThat decides to go along with that]] via illusion magic because she's a gossip hound. In the process of finding out her classmates' secrets, she gives some surprisingly good advice, though it isn't always taken.

[[folder:Chizuru Naba]]

Chizuru is the motherly and caring roommate of Natsumi. She serves as something of a big sister figure for Kotarō, who is somewhat terrified of her. A natural conclusion for him to reach since she can be rather scary in general.\
\
She remains out of the loop for most of the story, but near the end when Negi needs to enlist her help for his plan to save the Magic World. She makes a pactio with him that gives her a magic spring onion and allows her to control whoever she [[AssShove inserts it into]].
----
* ApronMatron: When the injured dog she takes in turns into a young half-demon boy, Chizuru all but adopts him, whether he wants her to or not. Kotarō comes to care for her as a mother figure and he finds her intimidating enough for her to be one of the few people he would ''never'' defy.
* AssShove: One RunningGag has her trying to cure ailments by shoving spring onions up the rears of those afflicted -- usually Kotarō, to his neverending terror. In fact, her Pactio card is one such leek. She uses it on Negi in order to force him to admit who is the girl he likes.
* BerserkButton: Don't call her old or mature, much less insinuate so. [[{{BewareTheNiceOnes}} Just don't.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: There's [[CuteAndPsycho a few scoops of psychosis]] layered in with all that maternal benevolence.
* BitchSlap: She slaps the demon Graf Herrmann to defend Kotarō, which impresses him enough to kidnap her.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a big sister figure to Natsumi and later Kotarō. Well, perhaps more ''motherly'' than sisterly, but if you say that she'll probably kill you.
* CuteAndPsycho: PlayedForLaughs, she's a deeply caring, beautiful girl with underlying psychosis that scares both Kotarō and Natsumi.
* TheDreaded: Kotarō is ''terrified'' of her. Natsumi is also similarly scared of angering her.
* {{Expy}}: She bears a very strong physical resemblance to ''Manga/LoveHina'''s Mutsumi Otohime. Hidden psychosis aside, their personalities are also very similar.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Seems to take care of most of this sort of thing around her dorm room.
* HatesBeingAlone: "Loneliness" is stated to be one of her dislikes. This is probably one reason why she's so eager to keep Kotarō around.
* HealingShiv: Her artifact, sorta. It heals status ailments in a [[AssShove highly unpleasant manner.]]
* IndifferentBeauty: She's beautiful, mature and busty, but doesn't really seem to care.
* KickTheDog: During the Sports Festival, she [[AssShove rams her pactio leeks up Negi's ass]] in a childish attempt to find out who he likes. Her pactio leeks have a mind control effect, upping the ante that much more.
* MamaBear: She gives Graf Herrmann one hell of a BitchSlap for threatening Kotarō.
* MarshmallowHell: One of the more notable examples in the series that [[TropeNamer named the trope]], at one point Negi somehow got caught ''in her bikini top''. She made no real attempt to extricate him, opting rather to giggle at the situation while Negi struggled to breathe. Also, when Kotarō showed up again and started threatening her and Natsumi, she simply ''marshmallow hell-brainwashed him''.
* MindControlDevice: The leek in her Pactio. In exchange for [[AssShove her... shoving it up somone's ass]], it heals the target in exchange for obedience to her until it wears off.
* MsFanservice: As the most buxom girl in the class, this is a given.
* {{Ojou}}: She's apparently as rich as Ayaka, and is perhaps the main reason they are close friends and share a dorm room. According to Kotarō, the Naba family seems to be into heavy industries.
* OjouRinglets: She has a pair of ringlets in front of her shoulders, and she's eventually revealed to come from a wealthy background just like Ayaka.
* RunningGag: Um, Chizuru, what are you about to do with that leek?
* SecretlyWealthy: Towards the end of the manga, it's revealed that Chizuru's family is about as rich as Ayaka's, but like Konoka, she never makes mention of it. According to Kotarō, the Naba family seems to be into heavy industries, [[spoiler:which is very convenient for Negi to ask Chizuru's help in his project to {{Terraform}} Mars.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: She ships Kotarō/Natsumi pretty quickly, and even starts setting it up.
* TastesLikeFriendship: Helps to facilitate Kotarō's HeelFaceTurn by offering him food.
* TheTease: She playfully suggests Kotarō to make a pactio with her like he already did with Natsumi.
* YamatoNadeshiko: A kind and reserved Japanese girl that lets ''no one'' endanger her charge.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: She's one of the younger students despite being the most well-endowed and one of the more mature ones.

The cheerful [[OlderThanTheyLook childlike]] twins of Class 2/3-A, the Narutaki twins are known for their [[GenkiGirl rambunctiousness]], with an apparent hobby of catching people off-guard with their appearances fit for a nine-year-old. They're also good friends with Kaede, who has taught them some basic techniques of her craft.
----
* ACupAngst: After Fuuka rationalizes that Makie must've skipped measurement day because of how flat she is, her twin sister quickly remarks that they're no better off in that department as they aren't even wearing bras.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: They are the first have gotten married and have children among the heroes after the seven year timeskip... and they both ended up having twins.]]
* CheerfulChild: They're the most childlike of their class, in appearance and personality, and are also the most cheerful of Negi's students.
* GenkiGirl: Both are all-cheerful, all the time.
* GirlishPigtails: Fuuka wears her hair in pigtails while Fumika has two hair buns. Both are two of the smallest and most childish of their class.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: They're identical twins, but both have distinctive hairstyles (Fuuka has GirlishPigtails and Fumika has hair buns). Also, Fuuka has TsurimeEyes while Fumika has TaremeEyes.
* InterspeciesRomance: [[spoiler:They both marry Hellas princes. ''[[DoubleInLawMarriage Twin]]'' princes, which probably makes this a ThemePairing.]]
* KiddieKid: They're middle school students, but look and act like elementary school students.
* {{Ninja}}: Apprenticed under Kaede. Still beginners, but can at least make illusionary clones.
* NinjaBrat: They aspire to be just like Kaede but have nowhere near her strength or skill.
* OlderThanTheyLook: They're fifteen, yet still manage to get grade-school student discounts at movie theaters.
* PolarOppositeTwins: Fuuka is a troublemaking prankster, while Fumika constantly worries about the trouble the former may bring. However, they can act as SingleMindedTwins, but only when they agree.
* RagsToRoyalty: [[spoiler:They weren't poor, but were still on the middle-class side. Then they married Hellas princes.]]
* RoseHairedSweetie: They are very cheerful and adorable pink-haired girls.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Due to romanization differences, the elder Narutaki twin's name may be written as Fuka, Fuuka or Fūka.
* ThemeTwinNaming: Fuuka and Fumika are twins and their names sound similar.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Fuuka's the tomboy, Fumika the girly girl.
* TricksterTwins: The pranks they play on Negi during their spotlight chapter/episode include editing his class roster. "Mature tastes" and "exceptional technique" indeed.
* TsurimeEyes: The more mischievous Fuuka has much narrower eyes than her more hesitant sister.
* TwinSwitch: It's implied that they'll use each other's hairstyles to trick people.

[[folder:Misa Kakizaki]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ShizukaIto (Japanese) and Creator/GwendolynLau (English)
!!!'''Portrayed by:''' Asumi Ohshima
[[quoteright:292:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_2190.JPG]]

Misa is more or less a stereotypical cheerleader. She and her fellow cheerleaders Sakurako and Madoka love to hang out, shop, wear stylish clothes, and talk about boys. She's also the vocalist/guitarist of their band "Dekopin Rocket". Misa is the only student said to have an actual long-term boyfriend, though it's implied to be not that serious (and said boyfriend seems to have vanished altogether post-Mundus Magicus).\
\
She's best remembered for proposing a "[[InvertedTrope Reverse Hikaru Genji Project]]" for Negi, after seeing just how cool he was in the Mahora Budokai. Although she followed Negi to the gate to Mundus Magicus with Yūna and the others, she was not transported there.
----
* BigSisterInstinct: Though it never crops up, inner monologue has her mentioning that "Nagi" stirs up a strong desire to protect him in her.
* BrosBeforeHoes: A gender inversion. She has the hots for Nagi and wants to make a serious move on him, but wonders if she's being unfair to Ako, whose feelings she supports.
* ComedicShotacon: She clearly has developed an strong attraction to Negi after seeing him as "Nagi" to the point where [[WifeHusbandry she devises a plan to groom him into the perfect boyfriend for when he finally becomes of age]]. Misa has become somewhat aware of the implications of falling for someone Negi's age but she doesn't really let it bother her. In fact she could have broken up with her boyfriend because of her plans for Negi which could explain why he is never mentioned after the Mahora Festival arc.
* DatePeepers: She and the other cheerleaders spy on Negi's "date" with Konoka.
* InstantCosplaySurprise: Sans the "surprise" element -- she, Sakurako and Madoka did it to themselves to [[DatePeepers peep on Konoka and Negi]] without being noticed.
* LovableAlphaBitch: She's definitely the alpha girl of 3-A, however there's no indication that she isn't liked by her classmates.
* MsFanservice: She's among the prettiest of the 3-A girls and there's a particular scene near the end of the series where she tries to entice "Nagi" by exposing almost all of her chest.
* TheGhost: Not Misa herself but her boyfriend was never seen or named once in the series and he basically ceases to exist once everyone returns from Mundus Magicus. This could imply that Misa formally broke up with him sometime after the Mahora Festival arc.
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The inbetween to Sakurako's nice and Madoka's mean. She lacks Madoka's temper, but also Sakurako's sunny disposition. She can dip into mean if provoked though.
* PomPomGirl: She's the leader of the class' cheerleaders. Her Pactio card depicts her in her cheerleader uniform and carrying pom-poms.
* ProudBeauty: She doesn't mind using her body to try and seduce Negi.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She knows she's attractive and the only reason she doesn't show off her body more is due to her status as a minor character. She has no qualms sunbathing topless or showing Nagi almost all of her chest.
* WifeHusbandry: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]] -- she's savvy enough to realize that in a few years, Negi will be a {{Bishonen}}, and as both parties get older the age gap wouldn't matter so much. Perhaps she's already gotten a taste of it, after discovering exactly who "Nagi" (i.e. the aged-up Negi) really is.

Sakurako's biggest claim to fame is her [[BornLucky otherworldly luck]]. Otherwise, she's just another cheerleader, doing what cheerleaders usually do. She's also the guitarist and main vocalist of "Dekopin Rocket", a band consisting of her and her fellow cheerleaders Misa and Madoka.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''akurako '''S'''hiina.
* AnimeHair: Good luck trying to replicate that style in real life.
* BornLucky: Never bet against Sakurako. You will lose.
** During the Kyoto arc, when Asakura (and Chamo) made a contest about who could steal Negi's lips during the night, none of the non-participants bet on Nodoka - except Sakurako, who then won the meal ticket jackpot.
** This ability came in handy when Yūna, Makie, and the rest of the group following Ala Alba got lost in a fog on the way to the gate to Mundus Magicus. The odds of a normal human making it though the fog were, according to Donet [=McGuinness=], about equal to a standard lottery odds. On average, it happens once every ''century''. Sakurako, "Mahora's Lucky Mask" led them through. WordOfGod even states that were she to get a Pactio, she could increase her partner's luck.
** In the WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue, it's stated that her mood actually affects the economy ''on a global scale''.
* CherryBlossomGirl: She's named Sakurako and known for being exceptionally [[BornLucky lucky]].
* DatePeepers: She and the other cheerleaders spy on Negi's "date" with Konoka.
* GenkiGirl: Almost as cheerful as the Narutaki twins.
* GirlishPigtails: She ties her hair up into pigtails and is the most jovial of the cheerleaders.
* InstantCosplaySurprise: Sans the "surprise" element -- she, Misa and Madoka did it to themselves to [[DatePeepers peep on Konoka and Negi]] without being noticed.
* NiceGirl: While all three cheerleaders are decent girls, she stands out as the friendliest.
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The nice one compared to Misa's inbetween and Madoka's mean. She's always cheerful and upbeat, and never has a mean thing to say about anyone.
* PerpetualSmiler: She's ''almost'' always seen with a bright, cheery smile.
* PomPomGirl: Her Pactio card depicts her in her cheerleader uniform and carrying pom-poms.
* ShipperOnDeck: When Haruna and Madoka share a [[LesYay near-yuri moment]] towards the end of the series, she can't help but wonder what kind of pairing that is.
* TwoFirstNames: Shiina is a Japanese feminine given name, although it's not rare for it to be used as a surname like in Sakurako's case.

The third cheerleader, Madoka appears to be one of the only two {{Ordinary High School Student}}s left in [[WackyHomeroom Class 2/3-A]] besides Misa. She is also the drummer for "Dekopin Rocket". She appears to have a crush on an [[OvernightAgeUp aged-up]] Kotarō, though is also a bit boyish, and is [[InformedAbility apparently]] an Music/AvrilLavigne fan.
----
* BerserkButton: She ''hates'' being forced to play a [[CrossCastRole male]] role.
* BitchSlap: She slaps the [[OvernightAgeUp aged-up]] Negi and Kotarō, when they [[AccidentalPervert accidentally walk in on Ako while she's changing]]. To play up the comedy, Kotarō casually blocks it, then she ''punches'' him.
* BoyishShortHair: Madoka prefers short hair, plays in a rock band and isn't afraid to get into a fight.
* DatePeepers: She and the other cheerleaders spy on Negi's "date" with Konoka.
* HasAType: She becomes attracted to guys with black hair and dog ears due to the crush she developed on Kotarō's aged-up form.
* HatesBeingNicknamed: She dislikes any variation of her last name.
* InstantCosplaySurprise: Sans the "surprise" element -- she, Misa and Sakurako did it to themselves to [[DatePeepers peep on Konoka and Negi]] without being noticed.
* InterspeciesRomance: Her attraction towards Kotarō's aged up form causes her to be attracted mainly to black-haired dog eared people.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: She develops a crush on Kotarō's aged up form. Then the age deceiving pills wear out and he de-ages right in front of her...
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The mean to Sakurako's nice and Misa's inbetween. Downplayed because she's more temperamental than outright mean.
* PomPomGirl: Her Pactio card depicts her in her cheerleader uniform and carrying pom-poms.
* RescueRomance: She started having a crush for the aged-up Kotarō after he saves her from some thugs.
* ReusedCharacterDesign: Her appearance is based on short-haired Motoko from the last volumes of ''Manga/LoveHina''.
* SobriquetSexSwitch: When playing DatePeepers on Negi and Konoka, Madoka dresses like a boy for disguise and the other cheerleaders call her "Kugio" based on her surname Kugimiya.
* SweetPollyOliver: For some reason, she's made disguise herself as a boy when spying on Negi's "date" with Konoka along the other cheerleaders who just put on a different girl's uniform.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to the other two cheerleaders' girly girl. While not exactly masculine, Madoka has BoyishShortHair and is more short-tempered than Misa and Sakurako.
* TomboyAngst: This forms the crux of her character; she's extremely tomboyish and wishes to be anything but.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Despite her boyish looks, she's a cheerleader who enjoys shopping, gossiping about boys, and dressing up.
* {{Tsundere}}: Older Kotarō gets to experience both her sweet side and her ''punch''.
* VocalDissonance: According to character material, Madoka has a husky voice for a teenage girl and is very self-conscious about it. The anime adaptations give her a voice fitting for her age, though.
