->''"Your dreams are your own personal concerns... you should take on the challenge and fulfill your own dreams. However, your worries are my concern. Entrust every last one to me.''"

Medaka is literally better than everybody, no matter how accomplished they are. A natural leader, elected the student council president with 98% of the vote in her freshman year, Medaka is one of the mysterious ''Abnormals'' -- greatly gifted people -- and may even be a [[UltimateLifeForm genetically perfect human being]]. In addition to making her vastly above-average, this manifests itself in a special power: she has the ability to copy other people's special powers and master them instantly. This ability is known as "The End". At the close of the Thirteen Party Arc, it turns out restraining this power from overwhelming her requires tremendous effort. Medaka works harder than anyone else, attempting to solve every problem the student body brings to her.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkiToyosaki (Japanese), Creator/ShelleyCaleneBlack (English)
----
* AGodIAmNot: She frequently denies accusations that she's as all-knowing or all-powerful as others often make her out to be.
* AcademicAthlete: She is an excellent student and athlete.
* TheAce: She is better than everyone at everything as well as extremely popular. The only things she can't do better than others are things that she probably shouldn't, like murder, or things that require personal expression like music and art.
* ActionGirl: Tough, brave and stronger than everyone.
* AdrenalineMakeover: [[spoiler:After losing the election to Zenkichi and deciding to live more freely]], she has Zenkichi cut her hair short and starts wearing a sportier outfit.
* AesopAmnesia: After Zenkichi [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath talks her]] out of her [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashing]] during the Flask Plan arc, she revises her life's goal of making others happy to include her own happiness. When she [[spoiler:loses the next Student Council President election to Zenkichi, she's left feeling that her life without keeping the position to serve others has lost all purpose]], requiring Zenkichi to yet again talk her out of the mindset as viewing herself solely as servile.
* AllLovingHeroine: Believes that everyone can be saved. May actually be right.
* AllTakeAndNoGive: Zenkichi will do anything for her, but Medaka just drags him along and ignores his will and all his protests. This becomes a plot point during the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc and we see her [[WhatTheHellHero called out]] on her treatment of Zenkichi.
* AllYourPowersCombined: The logical conclusion of [[PowerCopying The End]] is having pretty much every skill used by the rest of the cast.
* AnimalsHateHer: Medaka terrifies all animals because they can sense her immense strength. After the TimeSkip at the end, [[spoiler:with Medaka no longer possessing her immense powers, animals love her and her office is filled with dogs.]]
* AnimalThemeNaming: She is named after a fish.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: She has very old-fashioned speech patterns, in particular casually throwing the pronoun [[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns "kisama"]] toward almost everyone, which is regarded as hostile in modern times.
* AssKicksYou: Her "Kurokami Hip Attack", which she uses in Chapter 175 of the manga.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Before the genre shift, it was often shown that she had a military strength SherlockScan. For example, the way she found the saboteur of the girl on the track team bordered on CrazyPrepared with steps like simply happening to read ''every'' newspaper every day. The End also works by analysis.
* BadassInDistress: To preserve drama she's occasionally put out of commission or taken prisoner, but it's fairly clear that she's still ''capable'' of handling everything.
* BeautifulTears: Her "third special power" (as Zenkichi calls it), is the strict girl/cute girl switch, where she puts on a cute crying face that nobody can resist, especially Zenkichi himself.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She became friends with Zenkichi because he was the first person to tell her that her life had a purpose. It's later revealed that [[spoiler:she was so happy that she proposed to him, but he rejected her]].
* BerserkButton:
** She gets quite annoyed whenever Zenkichi gets too friendly with Shiranui, as the girls hate each other.
** Despite her general lack of reservation regarding intimacy and modesty, Maguro [[BrotherSisterIncest getting too touchy-feeling]] tends to send her into [[SuperMode War God Mode]], and him [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom into the nearest wall]]. Their father implies that she started living on her own primarily to get away from him.
** Kikaijima’s apathy toward animals actually angers her enough that they get into a (comical) fight.
* TheBerserker: When she gets too angry, she enters an alternate mode capable of tearing down buildings. She ignores all injury, obstacles or morality in this state, though later in the story it's mostly under control. It comes in handy later on to NoSell [[WordsCanBreakMyBones Styles]], as she "doesn't hear words" in this state.
* BerserkerTears: When [[spoiler:Zenkichi briefly dies]] in Chapter 71, she is so distraught that she enters War God mode, and several people have to hold her down out of fear that she'll go on a massacre.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Medaka is, for all intents and purposes, a [[AllLovingHero total]] [[NiceGirl sweetheart]] who won't hesitate [[WeHelpTheHelpless to help those in need]], and it's very hard to piss her off. [[UnstoppableRage This is a good thing for anybody who's worried.]]
* BigEater: After she [[spoiler:stops being the student council president]] it is revealed that she was holding back on eating meat. She turns out to be a bigger eater than Shiranui, [[spoiler:who was only stuffing herself because Medaka wasn't at the time.]]
* BigGood: Medaka is always the one leading the way and is the symbol of the main cast.
* BigLittleSister: She's much taller than her older sister Kujira.
* BloodKnight: Played with. While her main goal is maintaining peace, it is noted at several points in the story that she relishes challenges from enemies, especially after the GenreShift. She eventually gets better.
* BlueIsHeroic: Her default outfit is a dark blue school uniform and baby blue skirt, and she is TheHero of the story.
* BlushSticker: When she was a child.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Played with. Oudo tries it, but he ends up resetting her personality to how it was before the story started.
* CharacterTics: Has a habit of imitating other people's poses. She also has a very distinctive pose involving pointing her fan. The former habit is dropped shortly after the Flask Plan starts, and the latter after losing [[spoiler:her position as Student Council President.]]
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: It's clear from early on that Zenkichi and Medaka like each other, but they don't realize how the other feels. At the end of the last chapter, [[spoiler:both agree to get married after their final duel]].
* ChildProdigy: Medaka at two years old had read the entire contents of a large library and was able to solve math problems that had professors stumped.
** By the time she was a year old, she had already accumulated all the academic knowledge she currently possesses. This ends up being somewhat of a weakness due to her failure to take in new information.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: She has lived by the policy that she was born to help others since she was two years old. Deconstructed trope, since this is treated as a flaw. Medaka believes ''everyone'' needs her help and friendship including villains, thus she sees her enemies (i.e. people she hasn't helped yet) as more like friends than her allies are.
* CleavageWindow: She modifies her uniform to leave some cleavage exposed. It should be noted that Medaka states that she is not exposing her cleavage; she is ''[[MsFanservice covering everything else up.]]''
* ClingyJealousGirl: Subverted. Shiranui implies that Medaka is being jealous of her when she tries to keep her and Zenkichi from working together early on, but in truth Medaka just doesn't like Shiranui. On other occasions, such as with Emukae, she laughs it off.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: It starts with directly asking a suspect if they committed the crime, and believing that a dog outfit will let her approach a lost dog without scaring it off. It's around the point when she tests her successors in a PlayboyBunny outfit with an absurdly-expensive video game that they wonder what an ordeal Zenkichi must have suffered being around her for 13 years.
* ComicallyInvincibleHero: Both very early on in the series before she meets anyone at her level, and later in the series after she's overcome [[spoiler:all her rivals]]. Culminates in a final plot point which consists of her beating up [[spoiler:''every single character in the series'' off-panel (except Ajimu, who is "[[DeathIsCheap dead]]")]].
* CoolBigSis: She seems to have assigned herself this role toward Kamome, even insisting he refer to her as his sister.
* CustomUniformOfSexy: She modified her uniform to add a massive CleavageWindow and shorter skirt, which could [[NoDressCode in no way be considered within school regulations]].
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Deconstructed. Medaka actually ''can't'' befriend people without somehow defeating and "fixing" them first. Zenkichi, the only person who she befriended normally, eventually comes to the conclusion that he needs to [[spoiler:actively oppose her if he still wants to be of any interest to her]].
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: When she was a child, she wondered why someone so incredibly skilled and intelligent as her was born, and came to believe her life was meaningless. Zenkichi was the one who gave her a purpose by telling her she must have been born to make people happy. This is played with every which way before being deconstructed twice over during the course of the series. Every time, Zenkichi was instrumental in showing Medaka a purpose she would follow.
* {{Determinator}}: Broken bones, ripped tendons, perforated lungs, losing pint after pint of blood and even being [[spoiler:forced to see the world as Kumagawa does]] completely fail to phase her.
* DetonationMoon: [[spoiler:Does ''something'' to the moon that causes it to disappear. 11 years later she's working on a plan to restore it.]]
* DevotedToYou: Zenkichi has devoted his life to being by Medaka's side and protecting her ever since he can remember.
* DualityMotif: In her Hybrid God Mode, the left side of Medaka's hair and her left eye turn black, while the right side of her hair and her right eye become white.
* FirstKiss: Zenkichi states rather flatly that her kissing Kikaijima meant nothing. After all, Medaka was kissing ''everybody'' in her class years back until Zenkichi made her stop.
* FlashStep: Medaka has the Kurokami Phantom. First, [[LosingAShoeInTheStruggle she must shed her footwear]]; she needs to go barefoot to make her footsteps perfectly nimble and unfettered. Next, she leaps up and down in a hypnotic series of bounces until the sound of her jumping is out of sync with her visible movements. At the right moment, she springs forward, blitzing her opponent with a rush so fast that it breaks the sound barrier, destroying much of the environment. Unfortunately, this attack is beyond her own physical ability to withstand, so her [[HeroicRROD body takes a tremendous beating]].
* ForHappiness: Since Zenkichi told her he believed she was born to make people happy when she was two years old, Medaka has dedicated her life to make everyone happy. Due to the toll it took on her, this was later amended to allow for her own happiness, not just the ones she wanted to help.
* GenerationXerox: She has the workaholic tendencies of her mother as well as her expectation that others will follow her example, and her father's extravagant, larger-than-life personality and overflowing love. [[spoiler:This was intentionally set up by Professor Fukurou, who wanted a more sociable version of his older sister.]]
* GenkiGirl: Becomes much more energetic and friendly after [[spoiler:losing her position to Zenkichi and becoming a "normal" student]].
* GirlishPigtails: When she was a middle school student, she had her hair done in two pigtails.
* TheGlomp: Frequently delivers tackling hugs to Zenkichi.
* HighClassFan: She often acts like she's the most important person in the school and has her own custom folding fan with her, which she makes wild gestures with whenever she's being a Large Ham.
* HealingFactor: All Abnormals heal quickly, but Medaka can heal broken bones in an hour or so. After seeing Koga's artificial healing factor, she gains the ability to heal in ''[[spoiler:no time at all]]''.
* HeroicBSOD
** In Chapter 36, after Munakata apparently kills Zenkichi by turning him into a HumanPincushion, she can do nothing but drop to her knees in disbelief before bawling her eyes out.
** She loses it in Chapter 71 when [[spoiler:Zenkichi performs a HeroicSacrifice to take down Kumagawa]].
** She also completely breaks down in Chapter 139, when [[spoiler:Zenkichi not only defeats her in the presidential election, he ''crushes'' her. She had devoted herself to helping others and lacks the social awareness to see that people wanted her to be happy herself for a change]].
* HonorBeforeReason: As an AllLovingHero, she often resolves to reform people at any cost.
** In the Flask Plan Arc, she continues to trust her older sister Kujira despite the latter having no memory of Medaka and consequently no attachment to her, and having already proved herself untrustworthy.
** In the Kumagawa Incident Arc, the Student Council [[spoiler:has won by the second match]], but Medaka doesn't feel right letting Kumagawa leave without helping him. She also lets him [[spoiler:hit her with Book Maker, bringing her down to his level]] just because he requested it.
** In the Jet Black Bride Arc, she insists on playing by Momo Momozono's terms to save Zenkichi despite [[PhysicalGod Ajimu]] offering to easily solve the situation, and the risk of having to ''gouge out her own eyes'' if she loses.
* HyperspaceArsenal: Learned after simply watching the fight against Munakata.
* {{Hypocrite}}: In chapter 115, she chews Zenkichi out for not wanting to lose.
* HypocriticalHumor: In chapter 134, Medaka exclaims that she thinks no one in the world should have everything go the way they want it to, and Zenkichi rightly points out that, out of anyone, she has the least right to say that.
* IdiotHair: Subverted because she has one despite being extremely intelligent, but reclaimed because she does behave like an idiot sometimes.
* IdiotHero: Medaka is not exactly stupid, but her behavior frequently is disconnected from reality, and she frequently lacks "common man" knowledge, as shown when she doesn't know anything about baseball or what an amusement park is.
-->'''Zenkichi:''' She's so smart she passes right back into stupid.
** Early in the series, when Medaka first starts fighting dangerous foes, she lets them get free shots on her. Her idealism leads her to believe that since her foes have no reason to attack her, she has no reason to dodge, even with attacks that are meant to be lethal.
** She is initially so overly trusting that she can't see through obvious deception, which gets her captured and brainwashed during the Flask Plan arc.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: She needs people around her in order to be somebody. Without people to define herself against, she is only stats and abilities -- a woman of enormous power, but without purpose, happiness or orientation. "Live for People's Happiness" is her GoalInLife after all. Her CharacterDevelopment after the Successor Arc is largely about getting rid of this emotional dependency.
* ImportantHaircut: After the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc, she has Zenkichi cut her hair short, the style she had when the two first met, so she can [[spoiler:find a new purpose for herself]].
* ImprobableAimingSkills: After picking up Unzen's Abnormal ability to calculate trajectories, she can launch hundreds of superballs at her opponent.
* InvincibleHero: She's essentially unbeatable in a fight and never fails at anything important. When the metafiction comes into play, this trope starts getting played with a lot.
* TheJuggernaut: Immobilized by Unzen when he binds her to the school building with unbreakable wires, she begins dragging an entire wing of the building with her, stating that as Student Council President it's [[InsaneTrollLogic within her rights to move the school building if she deems it necessary]].
* JustFriends: [[spoiler:She proposed to Zenkichi when they were two years old, but he rejected her. Unaware that Zenkichi forgot about the proposal, Medaka assumed he never returned her feelings because he only acted as her friend. That is until Zenkichi makes his feelings clear by asking her to marry him.]]
* KnightInSourArmour: She has stated that she doesn't remotely believe in the absurd notion that [[RousseauWasRight all humans are inherently good]], but she does like and believe that she can redeem most people. Her fundamental personality is most similar to Tsurubami of all other characters, except switching introversion for extroversion.
* LackOfEmpathy: Her FatalFlaw, believe it or not, because as much as she wants to be TheHero and TheParagon, she does it out of a sense of duty. Being TheAce makes her unable to understand a lot of people (she can't even express herself with art or music). She particularly struggles to understand how it feels to grapple with failure or not know all the answers. Hell, she can't befriend anybody unless she beats them in a fight, so she treats her enemies as friends and her allies as more or less appendages (best seen with Zenkichi). This takes a pretty depressing tone once [[IJustWantToHaveFriends we learn about her goal in life]]. In the end, however, she gets better about this.
* LargeHam: She is prone to dramatic speeches peppered with over-the-top poses (some of which [[ShoutOut come from other series]], like [[Anime/DragonBallZ The Ginyu Force]]).
* LogicalWeakness: The End has been shown to have two significant flaws.
** First, there are abilities she simply should not perfect. It is implied that if she perfected Munakata Kei's bloodlust Abnormality she would simply feel an even greater urge to kill than he does. Similarly, a Minus that gets stronger often becomes ''less'' controllable, such as Emukae's.
** Second, due to perfecting things without the need to work at them, her self-expression is atrocious. She can play music with perfect technique but not with personality, so she actually ends up quite boring. This same limitation makes it impossible for her to copy a Style.
* LonelyAtTheTop: During her childhood, she did things so effortlessly that she couldn't make any friends.
* LosingAShoeInTheStruggle: Kurokami Phantom is this by default, which requires Medaka to be barefoot, so she's forced to slip off her shoes and stockings in the middle of battle. There's also the time Medaka tried to repeatedly kick Tsurubami in the face and he ends up eating shoe. When she pries herself loose, her shoes pop off and remain stuck in his mouth. Doesn't bother her, much though, as she actually likes fighting with her shoes off. She even teases him that he must really like shoes to hold onto them like that, and Tsurubami admits he was fascinated [[UsefulNotes/InsideShoes with schoolgirls' indoor shoes]] growing up.
* MaleGaze: She gets a lot of lingering shots that show off her figure as much as possible.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Characters find it really difficult to know when Medaka has serious feelings for someone since she will kiss and hug everyone without meaning a thing.
* MasterOfYourDomain: She has the capacity to control her body's functions. This climaxes in [[spoiler:using her muscles to circulate her blood after her actual heart stops beating]].
* {{Meido}}: She briefly wore the costume in an omake and everyone agreed that she cannot pull the look off at all. She's much too arrogant. She wore the outfit again in the Successor arc while cleaning the clock tower, whereupon she fights Kamome and the outfit undergoes ''[[PantyShot severe]]'' ClothingDamage by the time she comes out on top.
* MightMakesRight: [[WhatTheHellHero Called out]] by [[{{Jerkass}} Unzen]] of all people. She disagrees with his premise, but later she admits that she's wrong when called out by Koga regarding Kumagawa.
* MistressAndServantBoy: Her relationship with Zenkichi is like this, initially.
* MomentOfWeakness: When she's charged with [[spoiler:stopping the moon from crashing down on Earth in a manner that would likely kill her]], she finds herself trembling as she waits for her time to act. [[spoiler:Iihiko's "echo" comforts her.]]
* AMotherToHerMen: It's easier to get her pissed off by attacking those close to her than Medaka herself.
* MsFanservice: Along with few characters rivaling her in breast size, she practically sees it as her ''duty'' to provide fanservice and behaves accordingly with her exhibitionistic streak.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Her last name, Kurokami, could be read as '''Black God.''' And when she prepares to use Kurokami Phantom, you ''better'' run away, or else you'll be caught in the collateral damage zone.
* NiceGirl: Kind, caring, and always willing to help anyone out no matter what.
* NoBadassToHisValet: [[ServileSnarker Zenkichi]] has known her for so long that her impressive leadership skills, physical and mental prowess, and abnormal powers mean nothing to him.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She tends to be all over people.
* NoSocialSkills: Medaka has never really been able to learn social skills properly, simply imitating others' body language, and relies on impressing people into following her. It's telling that Zenkichi seems to be her OnlyFriend.
* ObliviousToLove: She doesn't appear to have a clue about Zenkichi being in love with her even after years of knowing each other. Zenkichi assumes Medaka can't comprehend the feelings of normal humans, so he can't expect her to ever feel the same way about him. Turns out it was less typical obliviousness and more that Zenkichi once [[spoiler:[[RejectedMarriageProposal rejected her marriage proposal]] when they were two years old, and never made a pass at her in the following years]], so Medaka was convinced her romantic feelings were one-sided until [[spoiler:Zenkichi proposes to her]].
* OfficialCouple: At the end of the series, [[spoiler:Medaka and Zenkichi have one final duel, now that both of them have no powers. If Zenkichi wins, she has to marry him. If she wins, he has to marry her.]]
* {{Ojou}}: She's the wealthy heiress of the Kurokami family, implied to be the world's most powerful family.
* OneHeroHoldTheWeaksauce: Abnormals and Minuses tend to be very poorly adjusted people because either they always win or they always lose, especially the stronger ones. Thanks to the influence of Zenkichi, however, she can act like a passably normal person, if eccentric. Also, unlike almost all of the other characters, her abilities are completely controlled.
* OutOfFocus: Sometimes the plot gives her some "vacation time", such as during the Successor Arc, in order to flesh out the other characters. During these times Medaka seems to be viewed less like a person and more like an idol by the cast.
* TheParagon: Medaka's goal in life to make sure her fellow students do not have any ''problems'', but encourages them to work towards their own goals and dreams. For example, she grows irritated with Akune early on when he does someone's task for them instead of showing them how to do it.
* PlotArmor: Ajimu believes that it would be futile to directly take her on [[GenreSavvy for this reason]], despite being an omnipotent being. Medaka insists that she's being overestimated.
* PowerCopying: The End, her Abnormality, allows her to instantly gain any skill or ability that she comes into contact with and then ''master'' it. Later on, she doesn't even need to see the skill in action as long as she hears how it works.
* PowerDyesYourHair: War God Mode turns her hair into a lighter shade of purple (fluorescent red in the anime), Altered God Mode, End God Mode turns it black, Forsaken God Mode turns it white, and Combined God Mode turns it black and white.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: #4.5 End God Mode causes Medaka's hair to increase in volume.
* ProudBeauty: She's fully aware of how attractive she is, right down to ''stripping down to her underwear for no reason in particular''.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Student Council president and the strongest person in the school (arguably; don't forget Hinokage).
* RedArmbandOfLeadership: She's the class president, after all. [[ExaggeratedTrope She also wears a blue one and two green ones]], at least until she finds people worthy to take on those roles in the student council.
* RejectedMarriageProposal: Medaka doesn't believe Zenkichi is in love with her because [[spoiler:''she'' asked ''him'' to marry her first and he said no. Keep in mind this happened when they were ''two years old'' and Zenkichi doesn't even remember said proposal.]]
* RunningGag: Before the GenreShift, Medaka had the habit of appearing in the background, mimicking the actions of the character who was just speaking. This is eventually explained as her way of relating to people since she is so far removed from a normal life. And even later this is explained as the basis for her abnormality: all she can do is imitate other people very very well.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Medaka has a tendency to drag the protesting Zenkichi around everywhere, whether he likes it or not, in her zeal for helping people.
* SayMyName: '''ZENKICHIIIIIIIIIIIII!'''
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: A confessed exhibitionist.
-->'''Medaka:''' [Lingerie Pose] ''What's the point if I can't show my toned body then?''
** When Kumagawa says that the 6 perverted fake suitors are right up her alley, she insists that she's no stripper, and only likes being looked at (though this is shortly after her character does a total 180).
* SherlockScan: From a pair of destroyed cleats and a ransom-style note, she's able to deduce the culprit's dominant hand, preferred brand of cleats, the newspaper she's subscribed to, and the ''city block she lives on.''
* SmugSuper: She developed a condescending view on the rest of the world before meeting Zenkichi. Oudo's attempted brainwashing actually just restored this personality.
* SpiritedCompetitor: Following the GenreShift, she becomes much more interested in fighting, or any type of competition.
* StrawNihilist: Since nobody could tell her her purpose in life, she came to believe that the whole world and life was pointless, just like Kumagawa. Zenkichi told her she was born to make people happy and that gave her a purpose to live.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Medaka is a parody of this character archetype, as TheAce who can get anything done on behalf of the student body.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: For her second trump card she changes abruptly from her usual strict personality to a softer and cute attitude. Curiously, she calls this ability {{Tsundere}}, which is a totally different character type.
* SuperMode: Has a total of five:
** [[BerserkMode War God Mode]]
** [[LimitBreak Altered God Mode]]
** [[WillfullyWeak Forsaken God Mode]]
** [[AllYourPowersCombined Hybrid God Mode]]
** [[DeathOrGloryAttack End God Mode]]
* SuperReflexes: Initially Medaka had the opposite of this, due to having decoupled her reflexes from her body and being in the habit of controlling her body only with her conscious mind. After fighting Takachiho, who dodges entirely unconsciously, she becomes nearly untouchable (except against [[spoiler:Kumagawa]]).
* SuperSpeed: She's always very fast, but if she activates the Kurokami Phantom she's basically unstoppable.
* SuperSpeedReading: As a toddler, Medaka was capable of reading books so quickly and diligently that she finished the entire library in her family's mansion in three months.
* SuperStrength: Even early in the story when she's been slacking off at staying fit, she's capable of tearing down a building that she's stuck on.
* SuperToughness: Her body is much more resilient than most, and even when she does take severe injuries like broken bones she keeps on fighting anyway.
* TheTease: She has no problem flirting with anyone, but she is this to Zenkichi in particular.
* TomboyishPonytail: Her ImportantHaircut mentioned above is accompanied by a small ponytail once Medaka becomes more free-spirited and fun-loving.
* TookALevelInJerkass: During the Successor Arc, she starts showing hostility toward Zenkichi after he fails [[spoiler:the Treasure Hunt]], questioning the value of remaining friends with him for so long when he was outdone by ordinary middle schoolers. Once Zenkichi decides to take a stand against her, she beats him to a pulp and condemns him as pathetically weak, all with the intent of properly pushing him toward becoming her enemy so she can continue to find value in him, unable to recognize that he doesn't want to directly fight her. Maguro attributes her [[spoiler:loss in the next Student Council President election]] to becoming too unrelateable, with her treatment of her childhood friend Zenkichi being the final straw (though Ajimu thinks otherwise).
* TrainingFromHell: Given the choice between easy training with guaranteed top results and hard training that might not succeed, or even kill her, Medaka unhesitatingly picks the hard training.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Early on, she will let an enemy wail on her mercilessly if she sees no reason to fight. Nabeshima eventually steps in to handle the fight and has to injure her opponent quite badly to make her stop, after which she points out that Medaka could have done it easier and without hurting her. Medaka mostly stops turning the other cheek after this; [[GoneHorriblyRight it's a change for]] the better, as latter arcs show.
* UncannyValley:
** {{Invoked}} by Maguro in a bit of ConversationalTroping; it's mentioned later on in the story that Medaka seems inhuman at times precisely because she's an overly perfect human. Maguro says that it [[spoiler:lost her the Student Council President election because people found it too hard to relate to her, with the final straw being the fight with Zenkichi which seemed heartless to the students. Ajimu disagrees with this interpretation, however, and says that people realized they were relying on her too much]].
** The concept was also brought up when she attempted to join the battle of the bands; she has amazing skill at playing music, but it ultimately sounds dull without personal expression, something that can't be objectively perfected. Furthermore, her music was described as an inversion of the trope, sounding inhuman and mechanical because it ''lacked'' imperfections, rather than the imperfections to something intended to be human-like usually bringing about this trope.
* UnequalPairing: There's a constant minor subplot about the fact that there is ''nobody'' that is Medaka's equal, least of all Zenkichi, her love interest. Comes to a head in the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc when [[spoiler: (a) Maguro realizes he was asking way too much of Zenkichi when he asked him to always support her and (b) Medaka walks all over people without realizing it]].
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Zenkichi. They go through ''years'' (both in RealLife and in-universe) of shipping, two rejections on Zenkichi's part, love confessions and a death or two.
* UnstoppableRage: Medaka's War God Mode. After copying Oudo's Abnormality, she gains more control over it, but does revert into utter berserker rage when she thinks [[spoiler:Zenkichi]] died.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: She keeps a ''lot'' of items in those breasts of hers.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Hurting and/or killing Zenkichi will make her fly into her War God mode.
* WallCrawl: Sprints up a wall to save time early on, but goes too many floors up and ends up wasting time instead.
* {{Workaholic}}: When she said that she'd help people 24/7, 365 days a year, she really meant it, and she expects the same work ethic from those around her. She stands out as the only student in Class 13 who regularly attends school; Abnormals are not required to do so. She inherits this from her mother.
* WorthyOpponent: As Ajimu points out, Medaka values her enemies even more than her allies.

Medaka's main man and punching bag. He's been with her since both of them were learning to speak, and his enthusiasm has rubbed off on Medaka. Has grown into a bit of a KnightInSourArmor due to years of dealing with Medaka. While only a normal human despite some early hints to the contrary, he is quite special to Medaka and through his determination he's able to keep up with Abnormals and others. Maguro refers to him as "Normal Cool".

----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: [[spoiler:Before his showdown with Shiranui!Iihiko he temporarily becomes an user of the the Contradictory Conjunction style.]]
* AboveTheInfluence: When presented with the situation in which confessing to Medaka would have assuredly made her his, he rejects it. After all, that wasn't the Medaka he'd been following all those years.
* AccidentalPervert: He has a bad habit of walking in on girls that are changing. None of them really seem to mind.
* AdaptationDyeJob: The anime makes his hair almost the same color as Akune's as opposed to being nearly white.
* AffectionateNickname: Calls Kujira, Medaka's older sister, 'Master Naze' for training him to take on Kumagawa and in turn, she calls him 'Zen-chan'.
* AnimalMotifs: Has often been compared to a dog, due to his loyalty to Medaka. He gives himself the nickname "Medaka-chan's pitbull".
* AudienceSurrogate: Being essentially "the ordinary guy who follows the monster", he's bound to have this role. He acts as a straight man for most characters, but isn't completely without his own quirks (see CloudCuckoolandersMinder).
* BackFromTheDead: Death turns cheap in this series after a certain point, so this one occurs a few times. [[spoiler:The first is when he died after being bitten by the vipers while fighting Kumagawa, but then had a conversation with a long-lost schoolmate and returned to life with his eyes restored.]]
* BadassBoast: Zenkichi tells Emukae that he will give the most Epic [[spoiler:rejection to her feelings]] possible. He does it by [[spoiler:''{{Seppuku}}''.]]
* BadassLongcoat: A school uniform variant when Zenkichi takes parts of the summer and winter uniforms to make his own. In a subversion, everyone else thinks it looks stupid. And his [[MyBelovedSmother mother]] repairs it, with ''martial arts sewing.''
* BeingGoodSucks: Despite his love for Medaka, he resolved instead to be her protector and to help others around him, leading him to collide with all manner of unsavory people
* BeleagueredAssistant: He definitely has the attitude, but Medaka really does do most of the work. On the other hand, he has to put up with Medaka dragging him around.
* BerserkButton: Making Medaka cry will invoke his wrath.
* BookDumb: He's savvy, but not exceptionally bright. This is not really obvious except by contrast with geniuses until [[spoiler: the treasure hunt test has him stumped even by sunset. Basically he was still figuring it out '''the entire arc while everyone was undergoing the challenges'''. Especially embarrassing considering that his competition was a group of middle schoolers.]] Despite this, he understands and empathizes with others quite well and his inherent nature allows him to bring out the potential of others.
* BoringButPractical: His fighting style is simple martial arts, specifically Savate, or French sailor kickboxing with shoes on. No fancy tricks, no cool cheating, no superpowers. He kicks people in the face.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Starts out as the character more likely to use physical force against certain antagonists in contrast to Medaka's more diplomatic, if harsh methods. Later on, while still protective of Medaka, he solves his problems and fights through talking.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Despite having the physique of a Normal, he's performed some superhuman feats, such as an earth-shaking stomp, and even running up walls.
* ChickMagnet: Mukae and Medaka are expressly in love with him and it's all but stated that Shiranui is too.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He's loved Medaka for quite awhile, but thinks she doesn't reciprocate and has thus tried to act as her protector. Of course, he's mistaken about Medaka's feelings because she does love him back, but thinks ''her'' feelings are one-sided because of his lack of advances [[spoiler:and rejection of her marriage proposal when they were two. In the final chapter, Zenkichi and Medaka agree to get married after their final duel.]]
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: The only person that truly understands Medaka.
* TheComicallySerious: He's one of the more grounded characters in comparison to the rather spacy Medaka or Maguro.
* CowardlyLion: Somewhat understandable, considering some of the abilities seen in the series. Zenkichi is often intimidated or outright afraid of certain foes like Kumagawa. However, he'll still put it aside and do what needs to be done.
* CrazyJealousGuy: While he generally doesn't take it to the extremes that others may have, he doesn't like other guys hitting on Medaka. He managed to break out of Oudo's "command" to kneel because the latter was about to kiss her.
* CrazyPrepared: He created perfect models of handguns and ''bazookas'' and trained daily on how to disarm them ''just in case''.
* DeclarationOfProtection: His motivation in life is to be by Medaka's side and protect her, although she doesn't necessarily need his protection.
* {{Determinator}}: Zenkichi in general, but especially if Medaka is watching. It's even present as a child, where he tells Medaka that even with a fever, he'll always catch up to her.
* DisappearedDad: His dad abandoned his wife and son because he was a mediocre person who couldn't handle being near someone as extraordinary as his wife. Zenkichi doesn't resent him for it since he still had his mother, but he also resolved to never be like his dad. This is why he tries not to be TheResenter while being surrounded by extraordinary people.
* DistressedDude: Happens to him in the Jet Black Bride Arc, where he is [[spoiler: killed and sealed away by the Style Users.]] He felt pretty ashamed about it, having spent most of the arc trying to save ''her'' from an ArrangedMarriage.
* DoggedNiceGuy: He's been hanging out with Medaka almost their entire lives, subconsciously hoping that she would notice his feelings for her. Unfortunately, he [[spoiler:forgot that he ''rejected'' Medaka when she proposed to him back when they were still toddlers]], which means his lack of assertiveness is what kept him and Medaka from getting together for years.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Played with. He starts the series known primarily as Medaka's lapdog, and doesn't get much attention other than that. Gradually, other characters see his good traits, and respect him more.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: He starts the series with no powers whatsoever and isn't even a Special. However, after visiting the other world he was given an Abnormality by Ajimu called "Parasite Seeing", which allow him to see the world as others see it. [[spoiler:It was later altered by Shiranui's minus "Real Eater" during his training with Anshin'in from a skill lets him perceive the world as another person to the skill "Model Zenkichi" that lets him perceive his own limits. He also gained an ability which nullifies coincidence known as Devil Style, and briefly gained a more powerful style known as Contradictory Conjunction.]]
* EngagementChallenge: Part of his motivation was proving to Medaka's brother Maguro that he was worthy of staying by her side.
* ExtremityExtremist: JustifiedTrope, as Zenkichi is a practioner of Savate, a French martial art relying on high kicks and boxing-like punches.
* FalseFriend: He even claimed that his job was to go around bringing down people Medaka didn't, as she had trouble recognizing malicious intent.
* {{Foil}}: Being the other protagonist, he's one of the primary ones for Medaka; a normal but realistic individual who works hard to keep up with others, who despite his normality holds greater empathy with others than Medaka, despite her love of people. It's shown that he's occasionally more idealistic than Medaka [[spoiler: since he gave her a purpose in life.]]
* GenerationXerox: He and his mother share the same tastes.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: While Zenkichi's is shown to be very deadly in judo, boxing, and swordsmanship it's in his battle against Munakata that his forte is shown: Savate, the quintessential street fight technique.
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Played with. His extreme tenacity and work ethic have allowed him to keep up with Abnormals and even Minuses, but against the real heavy hitters he has difficulty matching up.
* HereditaryHairstyle: He inherited his mother's hairstyle.
* HostileShowTakeover: Played with after [[spoiler:he fails to solve the first puzzle designed for Medaka's successors. He decides he'll make Medaka recognize him and works with Ajimu to become the 'main character' and therefore beat her.]] The two get along the entire time, though.
* HumanPincushion: During his fight with Munakata he gets several blades stuck in his back.
* InconvenientAttraction: When he finally admits to himself he is in love with Medaka, he snaps and ''breaks down'', letting out a horrified rant at himself, as he thinks these feelings make him a despicable person who has only been staying with Medaka because of lust.
* InSeriesNickname: Heat, though only by Tsurubami.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:When Medaka [[HeroicBSOD feels that her life has lost all purpose]] after losing the next Student Council election, Zenkichi decides against confessing his feelings to her, despite knowing she would probably dedicate her life to him, and insists that she needs to find her own purpose in life.]]
* JackOfAllTrades: While obviously not supremely talented in nearly everything as Medaka, Zenkichi has shown proficient abilities at various sports, martial arts, and befriending others. As he was known as the "Club Typhoon", he's picked up various skills.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's snarky and gruff, but he's actually a really NiceGuy that's capable of making friends with extremely troubled people. His kind nature is such that Shiranui admits she could never really act against him.
* TheLancer: Due to his close relationship with Medaka, he defaults to the leader position when she's not around.
* LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards: He's the linear warrior for the first half of the series; skilled enough to keep up with and fight Abnormals, yet still far outclassed by Medaka's incredible growth.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Medaka would probably had become as insane as Kuwagawa if it wasn't for Zenkichi. Every time he's been forced out of the picture violently, an emotional outburst from Medaka is sure to follow.
* LoveEpiphany: After a lengthy self-reflection of his feelings for Medaka and the driving force behind his devotion for her, he realizes he's in love with her and wants to date her. He initially falls into a HeroicBSOD when he believes that his only motivation has been lust, but Emukae convinces him that his feelings are true love and nothing to be ashamed about (indirectly [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy supporting his relationship with Medaka]] in the process).
* MadeOfIron: Despite his normal body, he's been shown as capable of taking a lot of abuse including continuing to fight with blades sticking out of his back.
* MistressAndServantBoy: His relationship with Medaka sometimes borders in this. [[spoiler:He gets sick of it eventually and tosses over the status quo to become her opponent.]]
* MoralityChain: When Medaka was young, she was lacking in purpose and was edging towards a viewpoint of 'the world exists to make me more complete.' Zenkichi gave her the desire to make others happy, allowing her to grow up relatively normal. Zenkichi gave her life actual meaning and continues to be the most influential person to Medaka.
* MrExposition: Zenkichi ends up doing this during some fights, especially when it comes to Medaka's past.
* NotSoAboveItAll: During his FreakOut, he realizes that, underneath all that savvy guy snark and apathy, he's basically just like everyone else and just wants to go out with the girl he's spent his whole life (largely) following with gumption.
* OddFriendship: Being a Normal, his friendships with many Abnormals, both Plus and Minus, and even Ajimu Najimi is very odd that he was able to influence them as much as he has.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:In the final chapter of the series (not counting the last chapter of Kumagawa), Zenkichi and Medaka have one final duel, now that both of them have no powers to help. If Zenkichi wins, she has to marry him. If Medaka wins, he has to marry her.]]
* OnlyFriend: Until the start of the story and perhaps well into it, Zenkichi has been Medaka's only friend. He's the only one to know her bad sides as well as her good ones.
* PatientChildhoodLoveInterest: He has had a crush on Medaka since they were kids, but doesn't believe she'll ever reciprocate because she can't seem to understand normal humans. Instead, he loyally stays by Medaka's side as her closest friend to help and protect her.
* PlotArmor: [[spoiler:Negated by the newly created "Devil Style" technique, which eliminates luck and coincidence.]]
* PowerOfFriendship: Weaponized and perfected by Zenkichi.
* RedBaron: He gains the moniker of "Club Typhoon".
* RunningGag: Zenkichi walking into the Student Council room while someone's undressing.
* SarcasticDevotee: He will follow Medaka anywhere and snark at her every step of the way.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Zenkichi has lived his life to protect Medaka and keep her a sane and relatively normal person. [[spoiler: This is too much to ask of anyone, though, and he finally gets sick of it after coming in last place in the Treasure Hunt and she mocks him for it.]] This is actively [[DefiedTrope defied]] for the Bouquet Toss To The Future Arc when [[spoiler:he works up the will to tell Medaka that he's staying at Hakoniwa while she takes up leadership of the Kurokami Group, when she had taken for granted that he would follow her wherever she went. Of course, it loses some impact when one of Medaka's duties as the leader turns out to be Hakoniwa's chairman, so she's not really going anywhere.]]
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Medaka has a tendency to drag the protesting Zenkichi around everywhere whether he likes it or not.
* SelfImposedChallenge: {{Invoked|Trope}}. [[spoiler:During his fight with Medaka to see who will become the Student Council President and prove their main character credentials, he asks for an ability that would repulse any writer of traditional heroes, but we don't learn what it was for a long time. In the end, it turns out to be the negation of any sort of impossibly unlikely coincidence and fortune that blesses main characters everywhere. No plot armor, no long lost siblings, no MeetCute, no mercy from enemies ''nothing.'']]
* SenselessSacrifice: His fight with Kumagawa ends with him [[spoiler:deliberately sending the arena to the bottom of a snake-filled pit, while holding Kumagawa's hands still to prevent him from using his powers. Both boys seemingly die from the venom... only for Kumagawa to quickly recover, revealing that he doesn't actually need to move his hands to use All Fiction, putting Zenkichi's efforts to waste. Subverted when Ajimu revives him.]]
* ServileSnarker: He has been Medaka's follower all his life and has gotten used to her antics enough to snark at her craziness rather than be baffled like most people.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Ever since he was a child, his romantic feelings have only been directed to Medaka.
* SpannerInTheWorks
** Zenkichi throws an early wrench into the Flask Plan by beating Munakata instead of Medaka. Later, he snaps her out of working for it out of her own will.
** Oddly enough, he does this one to Ajimu [[spoiler:by succeeding in her plan. She wanted him to fail and show her that there were things not even she could do. She attempts suicide before being stopped by Medaka.]]
* StalkerWithACrush: Zenkichi's [[HeroicBSOD big realization]] in Chapter 126 is that Medaka doesn't return his feelings, which means he's basically been stalking her for years without any concern for her feelings. [[spoiler: He's wrong, as Medaka had admitted to liking Zenkichi when he was out of earshot fighting Munakata and went into a BerserkerRage when she thought he had [[TakingYouWithMe taken Kumagawa with him.]]]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks like a male and taller version of his mother.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Eventually decides to go up against Medaka for this position. When votes are being counted he knows there's no way he could have won. [[spoiler:Except he did. Zenkichi ''crushed'' her in fact.]]
* SubordinateExcuse: The main reason he goes along with Medaka's antics. [[spoiler:Over as of chapter 116 when he realizes he hasn't been doing either of them any favors by acting like this.]]
* SuperMode: [[spoiler: Altered God Mode, Model:Zenkichi]]
* SupportingProtagonist: The primary viewpoint character of the series, but focused mainly on the antics of Medaka.
* TakingYouWithMe: The conclusion of chapter 70, where Zenkichi [[spoiler:tries to kill Kumagawa by stomping the net so hard they both fall into the viper pit. Fails to work for three different reasons: Ajimu won't allow it, Kumagawa won't allow it and there's antitoxin anyway.]]
* TheoryOfNarrativeCausality: Zenkichi's "Devil Style" allows him [[spoiler:to cancel it out.]] In other words, he becomes [[spoiler:the sort of the character that ''wouldn't'' be the main character of a story]].
* TouchedByVorlons: Ajimu gives him [[spoiler:"Parasite Seeing" to replace his lost eyesight.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: He acts rather grumpy towards Medaka, but it's rather obvious he loves her.
* UndyingLoyalty: He has been loyally sticking by Medaka's side ever since they were toddlers.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Medaka. They have gone through ''years'' (both in RealLife and in universe) of shipping, two rejections on Zenkichi's part, love confessions and a death or two.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Shiranui tends to walk all over him and mock him while he seems oddly supportive of her. She admits when he's out of earshot that she could never really work against him.
* WarriorTherapist: Seems to be his defining ability post-genre shift. His development has less been about becoming stronger in the traditional sense, and more about understanding and talking to others.
* WeakBossStrongUnderlings: [[spoiler:When he takes over the Student Council, he openly states to Nienami during their fight that he's the weakest.]]
* WeakButSkilled: While fairly strong physically, Zenkichi has had to rely more on crazy-preparedness to handle some of the super-powered foes in the series.
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:Medaka and Ajimu]] both hope that he will become this for [[spoiler:Medaka]], presumably for different reasons.
* WouldHitAGirl: While he does express some reluctance at "seriously kicking a girl" (or at one who isn’t as strong as Medaka), he nevertheless will fight them if it's a serious situation.
* YouAreInCommandNow: He ends up as the student council president after an election against [[spoiler:Medaka]].

[[folder:Kouki Akune]]
[[quoteright:178:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akune_kouki.png]]

Kouki Akune is a former thug and enforcer of Misogi Kumagawa. Upon seeing the example of Medaka, he was motivated to clean up his life and became her fanboy in the process. After being defeated by Zenkichi in an early match, Nabeshima prodded him into joining the Student Council as the secretary. He has a light rivalry with Zenkichi for Medaka's affections. Akune tends to be overly perfect in many ways: He's strong, handsome, clever, honorable and skilled at a great number of tasks overall. Though he generally tries to stick to the rules of judo, when push comes to shove he'll generally employ some dirty tricks.

Akune is a Special, the step between an Abnormal and a Normal. He has the ability to imperfectly copy the abilities of others.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/DaisukeNamikawa (Japanese), Creator/TylerGalindo (English)
----
* TheAce: Prince of Judo, admired by many of the girls in school, has beautiful handwriting, and is usually quite a gentleman.
* TheAtoner: For his violent and shady past as Kumagawa's wing man.
* TheBigGuy: He's extremely effective in brawls and when smarts aren't enough he'll revert to his destroyer nature and crush his way through the obstacles.
* CharacterDevelopment: Throughout the story he generally mellowed out a great deal and became more of a princely character, though the Treasure Hunt made it clear that this isn't quite who he is either. During this arc, the nature of the tests and Wanizuka show him [[spoiler:exactly how Medaka thinks of him: As someone who halfasses things and never does his best out of misguided devotion.]]
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He's a Special rather than an Abnormal and thus doesn't seem to have any particular super strength. He can still crush through a vault door with sheer brute power.
* ClosetGeek: During his fight with Koga Itami, he outright admits to being a fan of Heisei-era ''Franchise/KamenRider''; in the manga he says that ''[[Series/KamenRiderRyuki Ryuki]]'' is his favorite, while in the anime he imitates Shinji Kidou's transformation pose.
* CuttingTheKnot: Instead of trying to solve a virtually unbeatable lock he decides to smash it instead and show why he was formerly known as "The Destroyer".
* DayIntheLimelight: The Treasure Hunt put a great deal of focus on Akune and gave him quite a bit of character development.
* DemotedToExtra: After [[spoiler:Medaka loses to Zenkichi in the 100th Student Council election, thus ushering in a new council.]]
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: In his backstory, he states that he acted as The Destroyer for Kumagawa as way to live his life with having to think about anything, but that stops working after he continuously fails to break Medaka, resulting into him begging her to "make him into something, anything, since he's currently nothing".
* DoggedNiceGuy: He joins the Student Council to get close to Medaka, but she largely ignores him. The Treasure Hunt explores this aspect of his character.
* GeniusBruiser: Though primarily known as the 'Prince of Judo', he's [[RealMenWearPink extremely talented in calligraphy]]. The Kurokami Medaka's Successor Arc also focuses on his quick thinking and resourcefulness.
* InstantExpert: It's only mentioned once or twice, but his ability is a lesser version of Medaka's. When he see someone do something, he can copy them to a fairly skilled level. Unlike Medaka, though, it stops there.
* PowerCopying: Though not to the extent of Medaka, he showed the ability to utilize Kikaijima's shout and Zenkichi's stomp.
* PrettyBoy: The series seems to ''love'' reminding us of how good-looking he is.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Invoked. Naze tells Akune to get off Koga, who he had pinned to the ground, in case anyone mistook him for a pervert.
* RightHandHottie: Well, he ''is'' Student Council secretary.
* TheRival: He briefly served as Zenkichi's rival, but this eventually fazed out in favor of making Akune into a mild ParodySue.
* ShadowArchetype: He held a similar level of devotion to Medaka as Zenkichi, until he realized how Medaka really viewed him. It's for this reason that he opts to [[spoiler: join Zenkichi against Medaka.]]
* WalkingShirtlessScene: In middle school he wore his jacket open, with only a {{sarashi}} underneath.
* WouldHitAGirl: Despite being quite a gentleman, he won't hold back against women, evidenced in his takedown of Koga and [[spoiler:Wanizuka]]. When he was known as "The Destroyer" in middle school, he'd beat Medaka senseless ''every single day'' on Kumagawa's orders until Zenkichi intervened.

Kikaijima is a member of the Swimming Club who participated in the Student Council's challenge for club funding. She seemed greedy and harsh at first, but she later revealed in a dramatic monologue that she and the others in the club only wanted the money to escape their poor living conditions. After the swim meet, Medaka convinced her to join the Student Council as their Treasurer, at which point she started being drawn in a less threatening style and her personality took a one eighty and became a dorky cute girl instead.

Like Akune, Kikaijima is a Special and has abnormal lung power and a good head for numbers.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AiKayano (Japanese), Creator/MaggieFlecknoe (English)
----
* BabiesEverAfter: After a timeskip at the end, she's shown [[spoiler:with a baby in her arms and married, though her married name isn't stated.]]
* CallBack: In her first appearance, Kikaijima was a ruthless money grubber, a trait that was downplayed and used for laughs afterwards. Later, during the Bloody Seven's match, we see her finally invent a really nasty strategy to legitimately cheat a completely fair game, run by someone who has an Abnormality ''based on making things fair'' (Choujabaru), and under the scrutiny of the series' top cheater (Nabeshima).
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Yes, you too can shout loudly enough to knock down walls and use echolocation if you swim a lot.
* ComicallySmallBribe: All it takes to make her happy is a small amount of yen. To join the student council, she requests a salary of (roughly) two dollars a day and when Zenkichi sees her mostly naked she thinks a fair compensation is about five dollars.
* DemotedToExtra: After [[spoiler:Medaka loses to Zenkichi in the 100th Student Council election, thus ushering in a new council.]]
* DisappearedDad: She has such an obsession with money because her family fell apart due to money problems.
* TheHeart: Kikaijima does her best to act as the heart of the group and [[spoiler:when Zenkichi and Medaka begin fighting]] she forms a faction with the sole purpose of restoring group harmony.
* LuminescentBlush: Ever since she joined the Student Council, it's rare seeing her ''not'' blushing all the time.
* MoneyFetish: She wants to make so much money that she can one day fill a pool with it and go swimming in it. However, it quickly becomes clear that [[ComicallySmallBribe she has no idea what her services are worth]], so that's going to take her awhile.
* NoSocialSkills: Probably due to her lack of friends, at first she doesn't know how to hold a conversation and, thanks to Medaka's example, attempts to make Zenkichi her friend by kissing him.
* SchoolSwimsuit: Wears it under her uniform as apparently she feels more secure that way.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: She claims she can hold her breath for a ''month''.
* SuperScream: Her constant diving has given her powerful lungs to unleash huge screams, either for echolocation or direct offense.
* TheWorfBarrage: Her shouting power was originally noted to be one of the strongest suppression powers in Hakoniwa. While she initially uses it to great effect against the Class 13, later opponents are shown to either have greater lung capacity or simply are strong enough to nullify it altogether.

A former junior and currently a senior who joins the Student Council after the timeskip. She is very business-like and strict.
----
* ActionGirl: Torai is an accomplished martial artist and physically the most powerful member of the Student Council [[spoiler:now that Medaka is no longer in it]], best shown when she lands a successful blow on Nenami, one of Kurokami's Six Suitors.
* AlmightyJanitor: Technically, she's the strongest physically of the New Student Council [[spoiler: led by Zenkichi]].
* AudienceSurrogate: She replaces Zenkichi as this in the second to last arc, being the most sensible of the group.
* BareFistedMonk: Her fighting style.
* BadassBookworm: She is not only a genuine ActionGirl, but she's the only Student Council member thus far that actually wants to follow her duties rather than ThePowerOfFriendship for the most part.
* BeleagueredAssistant: She is quite displeased that Zenkichi doesn't value the rules of the school, not to mention treating her like an equal rather than a higher ranking student.
* OnlySaneMan: She is the only Student Council member past and present, to be shown to actually wanting to following normal duties of a Student Council.
* TheWorfBarrage: Her successful punch on Nienami only made her get serious.
* TheWorfEffect: Loses to Kuruguri when she tries to help Emukae fight her.

She came up with a plan to have her own NumberTwo Akune fight Zenkichi in a Judo match with the deal that if Akune won, he would go to the Student Council and cozy up to Medaka while Zenkichi would join her in the Judo club. It didn't work out. She is the cast's foremost rule bending and cheating enthusiast and referred to as the "Foul King." She has a level of resentment against geniuses like Akune.

Senior of Class 13 and Medaka's predecessor as the 96th and 97th President of the Hakoniwa Student Council. His Abnormality is called "Unknown Hero," the ability to disappear out of sight and out of mind. The gist of how this works is that he's so physically powerful (far beyond Medaka and the other heavy hitters in the story) that no one can accept the existence of someone this strong, [[SomeoneElsesProblem nor do they ''need'' to acknowledge him because he can and does solve every problem by himself]]. Thus, after voting him class president, [[InvisibleToNormals most people subconsciously forgot he even existed]]. As the former Student Council President, Hinokage protected the school for 2 whole years from the shadows before being succeeded by Medaka. However, he is [[OneLastJob coaxed to come out of retirement]] by Medaka when he discovers the threat Class -13 poses to the entire school.
----
* AwesomenessIsVolatile: His greatness is so overwhelming that people literally can't endure his memory and forget he exists as a defense mechanism.
* BigBrotherMentor: Serves as this towards Medaka with a bit of SternTeacher thrown in.
* BeardOfSorrow: Is shown with unkept stubbles in his depression after his failure to protect his underclassmen against the Minuses.
* {{Determinator}}: Before the story began, he had a [[AttackAttackAttack punching match]] with Medaka. They tied after ''3 days of nonstop punching''.
* GentleGiant: He's ultimately a nice guy whose caring and supportive of the students, but against threats he's utterly merciless.
* LargeAndInCharge: Former student council president and a good ten feet tall or so.
* LightningBruiser: Huge, powerful and fast especially after [[spoiler:Shiranui trades in his invisibility power for super speed.]]
* MarkedChange: Once Shiranui lends him her power for the Chougasaki fight his body is covered with black tattoo like markings [[spoiler:that represent his new ability.]]
* PassingTheTorch: Retired when he met Medaka and discovered that she would make a better president than him.
* PunchPunchPunchUhOh: Hinokage absolutely flattens Kumagawa in seconds, but the damage doesn't stick and Kumagawa just casually mentions how he should take out his aggression on the next passerby he sees.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: He's massive and incredibly strong to the point where he was able to match Medaka evenly before the story started. However, judging by the increased effect of his Unknown Hero he seems to have gotten much stronger since then since people can't even remember him anymore.
* RetiredBadass: Protected the school for two years until Medaka took over.
* SamaritanSyndrome: Took every responsibility on himself without ever relying on others. When the student council pleads for help he initially dismisses them and tries to take out Kumagawa and Class -13 by himself.
* TheWorfEffect: He´s ridiculously strong and before the introduction of the [[StoryBreakerPower completely ridiculous powers later in the series]] he´s arguably one of the single most powerful characters in the series, but the Minuses he fights all have powers that are natural counters to him.

He is called the "Monster Child" under the Flask Plan, as he is only 10 years old but is is intelligent enough to have skipped several grades. He attacks with explosive superballs and carries string made from the same material as his Snow White suit.

----
* AuthorityGrantsAsskicking: Of the Public Morals Committee
* AxCrazy: Willing to put the rest of the Student Council in grave danger in order to get a reaction out of Medaka.
* ChildProdigy: He's only ten, but he's also a junior in High School, which puts him a grade above his much older sister.
* CurbStompCushion: His battle against Medaka in [[SuperMode War God Mode]] played out like this. Unzen stood no chance against her and took some heavy hits. But he was resourceful enough to get Medaka tied up in his steel strings during the fight and regain enough of his bearings to begin trash-talking and groping her before she ultimately powered through his trick.
* EveryoneHasStandards: While he may be an unabashed little pervert, he apparently finds his sister’s dirty jokes too crude for his taste.
* {{Jerkass}}: Unzen is crude, rude and violent.
* KnightOfCerebus: He's not particularly bad, but he heralded the beginning of the story getting much more serious and shifting into a shonen fighting manga.
* KnightTemplar: He loves going completely overboard over minor infractions.
* LudicrousPrecision: He can perfectly calculate the trajectory of a dozen super balls.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: His policy is to brutally crush all rulebreakers even if there were other obvious solutions.
* PerpetualSmiler: He has a perpetual smug, violent grin.
* SociopathicHero: He's actually against the Flask plan from the beginning and once Medaka challenges it he mellows out a little, but his actual personality doesn't change at all.
* WeaponizedBall: He uses extremely powerful super balls.
* WhatTheHellHero: Early in the manga, Unzen calls Medaka out for only accepting the good parts about people and not just their flaws. She rejects the idea, but during the Kumagawa Incident Arc we see that he had a point.

* {{Hypocrite}}: With some minor overlap with HypocriteHasAPoint. She believes that high ranking Student Council members like Medaka should be held accountable to standards to show that they're not above everyone else, which is a good point. But Harigane also believes she herself should have no oversight in being an enforcer.
* KinkyCuffs: She uses them like brass knuckles.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Her proper, neat attire puts her at odds with the exhibitionist Medaka, indirectly sparking the first real conflict of the series.

A dark-hued man from the Thirteen Party, nicknamed "Hard Wrapping." His Abnormality is the power to use his reflexes to instantly counter-attack anything he is hit with, usually without even realizing it. He's also highly intelligent, especially since he can do everything reflexively and leave himself capable of thinking and planning even when fighting.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KenjiNomura (Japanese), Creator/ChrisAyres (English)
----
* ActionSurvivor: A very horrifying and saddening example. When he was little, he reveled in using his Abnormality to do cool things like be a beast at dodgeball. Then, his family's car got caught in an absolutely medieval accident with a semi truck carrying steel girders when it suddenly overturned taking a curve too hard and the massive girders on back fell off and skewered the vehicle, which was right behind it when the disaster struck. His superhuman reflexes caused his body to automatically react and dodge certain death, so he survived with relatively minor injuries. His ordinary parents and sibling? Totally pulverized. That was the day he began to stop treasuring his Abnormality and believe he was a freak of nature.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He looks exactly like a ScaryBlackMan, but has a Japanese name. And no one ever comments on this. Go figure.
* BloodKnight: He keeps fighting because he wants to find someone better than he is. His reflexes are so good that nobody can even touch him.
* CodeName: Hard Wrapping.
* CounterAttack: His specialty is to counter blows that the opponent sends because his reflexes can cover everything for him.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Joins the Loser Team halfway through the Thirteen Party Arc and fights the Plus Six.
* FlashStep: He's fast but not amazingly so. However, his movements are absolutely perfect, meaning he can achieve this effect. This causes Medaka to bust out her own counter, the Kurokami Phantom.
* GeniusBruiser: He's the strongest direct fighter in the plan and also one of the top researchers.
* PowerIncontinence: Until the very end of his fight with Medaka, he cannot control his reflexes. When he sees Medaka ''can'', [[OhCrap he quickly realizes he's in big trouble.]]
* SuperReflexes: His Abnormality allows him to automatically react to any situation without thinking.
* WouldHitAGirl: He happily lays in punches, kicks, and knee strikes to Medaka. Though it's not necessarily portrayed in a negative manner because he's the one looking for a WorthyOpponent in her and Medaka gives it back to him just as good, if not better.

* DefeatEqualsFriendship: After being beaten by Zenkichi, the two become friends, though Munakata isn't seen much again until the next Student Council Election. Interestingly enough, the Flask Plan supervisor was actually trying to invoke this trope, but with Medaka instead.
* DePower: [[spoiler:Loses his Abnormality after killing Kumagawa and realizing murder is ''boring.'']]
* DiscardAndDraw: The story initially implies that he's dangerous because of all the weapons he carries, but it turns out that once he ditches that strategy he actually becomes SuperSpeed that almost nobody can keep up with.
* FightsLikeANormal: He has a supernatural bloodlust, but this gives him no more prowess at fighting than a normal person. In fact, he's actually more dangerous ''without'' his Abnormality because he doesn't have to limit himself to avoid killing people on accident.
* ForTheEvulz: It's not his fault, but his Abnormality pushes him towards lethal violence at all times for trivial or nonexistent reasons.
-->"I don't kill for no reason, I have reasons to kill. I'll kill you because I don't want to fight you. I'll kill you because you're in my way. I'll kill you because the weather's nice. 530* FeelNoPain: Akune questions himself as to why she ''doesn't'' have this power when she heals so quickly, which leads him to the conclusion that the only reason she'd be left with a sense of pain is if she needed to feel pain as a way of measuring her status and not going overboard and wearing herself out.

* HollywoodCyborg: She was Remodeled by Naze Youka. The extent to which this extends is unclear.
* HourOfPower: She can only operate for three minutes at full power; when Akune learns about this, he remarks "You're not Franchise/KamenRider, you're [[Franchise/UltraSeries Ultraman]]."
* IJustWantToBeAbnormal: She was a completely normal person with nothing strange about her apart from a desire to be special. To this end, she had Naze remake her into an Abnormal.

* MoralityPet: Naze is willing to subject her siblings to dangerous experiments because she assumes that it will make her unhappy down the line, but Koga's life put at risk is too much for her self-imposed path toward misery.
* OddFriendship: She and Naze are best friends despite Naze's gloomy attitude and Koga's rather cheery outlook. Naze seems like she's treating her as an experiment at first, but reveals that she actually values her even more than her own family.

Yukuhashi is a member of the Thirteen Party with the project name of "Rabbit Labyrinth" with an unclear gender. Yukuhashi normally keeps Yukuhashi’s face hidden behind a mask. Unlike the others, Yukuhashi is not quite interested in the Flask Plan so much as is interested in Oudo, whose ability helps to cancel out Yukuhashi's mind reading and empath abilities, which are too overwhelming to cope with otherwise.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KanaAsumi (Japanese) Creator/MargaretMcDonald (English)
----
* AmbiguousGender: Nobody is clear on what gender Yukuhashi is.
* AMindIsATerribleThingToRead: Yukuhashi's ability grants the ability to know when anyone is lying and covering up their ill intentions. Such people are actually easier for Yukuhashi to deal with since Yukuhashi won't end up empathizing with the target too much that way. In the past, his ability nearly drove him crazy until he met Oudo, who simply thought of himself all the time while his massive ego drowned out everything else.
* CodeName: Rabbit Labyrinth.
* TheEmpath: If Yukuhashi had lived in ancient times, Yukuhashi would've been seen as a mystic or a god. As it is, Yukuhashi can barely function in the crowds of Tokyo.
* TheFaceless: Until the end of Yukuhashi's fight, Yukuhashi is always seen with a mask on.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcwIMFS_lB0&list=PLv80Q0lGv1yUEBk65aIQrFytzftEuIWVQ Desugita Mane Dayo]]
* OddFriendship: Yukuhashi worships Oudo because all Oudo ever thinks about is himself, which cancels out all the background noise Yukuhashi hears.
* OppositesAttract: Yukuhashi's ability and personality is the exact opposite of Oudo's. Yukuhashi seems to be the only person Oudo cares about at all at the start while Oudo's self absorption helps stabilize Yukuhashi.
* PowerIncontinence: Yukuhashi reads the minds of everyone around as well as picking up electrical signals which makes it impossible to function in crowded places unless Oudo is around.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Inexplicably so, and possibly just MasterOfDisguise.

->''"The world is too small for me. The sun is just about par with me. When I watch the sun make its ascent towards the sky, it reminds of just how great I am.''"

A self-centered man who refers to himself as "The King" and is arguably the most powerful member of the Thirteen Party. At first he claimed his Abnormality was "Weighted Words," or controlling people just by verbally ordering them. However, Oudo later demonstrated this was just a ruse: his true power comes from controlling electrical impulses, including those human muscles and nerves. He is the key member of the Flask Plan due to his ability to control not only people but also electronics. He also has a secondary ability known as Unreasonable Taxation, which allows him to steal the ability of another Abnormal.

->'''Voiced by:''' Kiyoshi Katsunuma (Japanese), Creator/JayHickman (English)
----
* AccentAdaptation: His English voice has a distinct, FakeBrit accent to it.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Takes down Shishime, who was about to pound Medaka into an irreparable pile of dirt.]]
* BlatantLies: "We are [[BloodKnight peace-loving]], [[PersonOfMassDestruction common]], [[PsychicPowers normal]], [[SuperSpeed ordinary]], [[SuperStrength typical]], [[TykeBomb everyday]], [[AxCrazy normal]], [[OverlyLongGag run-of-the-mill]] high school students".
* BreakTheHaughty: His attempt to steal Medaka's "The End" results in his hand melting. He's so horrified that he quickly surrenders, promising to stop calling himself a king and makes amends for the Flask Plan.
* CharacterTics: Has a habit of touching his forehead when he speaks.
* CodeName: Create.
* CompellingVoice: Subverted: He acts as though he has this ability, but it's actually more like mind control.
* EnslavedTongue: His Abnormality won't allow itself to be used for anything but KneelBeforeZod. Though he meant to tell his schoolmates to live life to the fullest, the first words that came out of his mouth were the order to bow before him.
* EvilCounterpart: Towards Medaka; while both are quite powerful and huge confidence, she genuinely wins people with her charisma. Oudo mainly subdues them with his abilities.
** In terms of their abilities as Abnormals, both possess the means to assimilate the Skills of others. But Oudo's "Unreasonable Taxation" outright steals another person's Skill (and rather violently to boot), while Medaka's "The End" simply analyzes and masters the Skills of others.
* EvilSoundsDeep: In the Japanese version.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Gilgamesh]], a red-eyed, spiky blonde megalomaniac who wants the main heroine as his woman.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Especially in the dub version with the FakeBrit accent.
* TheFettered: As a child, he lived on the streets and never hurt anyone in order to control his abilities. He failed.
* ItsAllAboutMe: When Yukuhashi attempted to read his mind, the only thought in his head was '''ME'''. As far as Oudo is concerned, the world exists for him.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trHrD0DFprY&list=PLv80Q0lGv1yUEBk65aIQrFytzftEuIWVQ Idai Naru Ore]]
* OddFriendship: His self absorption allows Yukuhashi to function like a normal person.
* PowerIncontinence: His Abnormality has a severe effect on his personality and he is prone to giving commands and forcing people to do things regardless of his will. He's quite aware that he can't really control his ability.
* PowerParasite: Unreasonable Taxation allows him to steal the abilities of others.
* {{Pride}}: He is incredibly arrogant as a result of his Abnormality.
* SelectiveMagnetism: He can use his electricity controlling powers to make an electromagnetic field and levitate metal objects.
* ShockAndAwe: He can control anything that runs on electricity, even if its bioelectricity. [[spoiler: Including the neurons of the brain for some handy dandy brainwashing]].
* {{Technopath}}: With his power to control electricity, he is the key to the Flask plan and controls over a hundred thousand supercomputers.
* {{Ubermensch}}: He believes that as the king, the world revolves around him and behaves accordingly.

->「''With thrill and risk I sharpen my nerves. I'm someone who would bet even under the worst circumstances.''」

Kumagawa is the story's {{tritagonist}}, a boy whose involvement with Medaka and Zenkichi stretches back thirteen years. He is someone that is described as having no malice, hope or other similar feelings, but would kill everyone on a whim. He is perpetually cheerful and smiling, but beneath that his personality is quite nasty: He enjoys breaking people and [[TallPoppySyndrome wants to destroy the elite and bring them down to his level.]] He is seen as particularly revolting to the likes of Medaka, who wants to see the best in everyone. Either to mark his lack of connection with reality, or his insincerity「his speech is surrounded by brackets, which are Japanese quotation marks, even when he is telling the truth.」

He possesses the Minus known as All Fiction, which was originally shown undoing all sorts of damage, and is fully capable of destroying his reality, or even entire concepts from existence.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MegumiOgata (Japanese), Leraldo Anzaldua (English)
----
* AntiHero: Becomes this after HeelFaceTurn. He remains the same [[TheSocioPath sociopath]] he always was but is on the side of good, even if only [[NominalHero nominally]].
* ArchEnemy: Initially notable as the one person who Medaka couldn't affect, and even after his HeelFaceTurn serves as one of her main contrarians. During the Flowers Run, [[spoiler: he opts to face Medaka alone as her last opponent even after Hanten and Iihiko, who were both stronger than him.]]
* AwesomeByAnalysis: He can instantly analyze all the weak spots, contradictions, or underlying truths, in virtually any person's personality, ideology, or even general fighting defense.
* AxCrazy: To the point that he seriously considered ''killing every single person on the planet'' ([[DrivenToSuicide himself included]]).
* BlatantLies: He has a tendency to tell extremely obvious lies, like saying he's totally not responsible for the attack on the Flask plan members while holding the bloody weapons involved.
* BreakoutCharacter: Quickly became the most popular character in the series, eventually getting his own story in Jump NEXT magazine. He also gained an even more important role in the story than he had already held.
* BreakThemByTalking: Just casually chatting, he knows all the things to say to cause someone to break down. He's so good at this that it borders on MindRape.
* BrownNote: 「A-hem」 「Good morning to all the minor characters.」 600 human hearts just got shattered!
* BornUnlucky: Unlike the likes of Medaka, the universe goes out of its way to make things harder for Kumagawa. He has awful luck such that he can never, ever win in a way that he can be satisfied with.
* BullyingADragon: Medaka's successors try picking a fight with Kumagawa. He pins them all to the wall in seconds once he bothers to try.
* ButtMonkey: Few people outside Class -13 show any respect for him, and he often ends up kicked around with WingdingEyes.
* CatchPhrase: 「Once again I couldn't win」 and 「It's not my fault.」
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Thanks to his DeliberateInjuryGambit and ConfusionFu habits it is easy to overlook that he is so strong, fast and deadly that only Medaka is capable of facing him.
* ChickMagnet: Once he quits being such a jerk girls start gravitating towards him despite his perverted behavior.
* CreepyDoll: His patched-up stuffed rabbit which he carried around at the age of four.
* CuteAndPsycho: Even when impaling someone with massive screws, he won't lose that adorable smile of his.
* DarkMessiah: Kumagawa is this in two different ways:
** To the highly negative and largely insane students of Class -13, he is to them what [[ShadowArchetype Medaka]] is to the other students. TheParagon of what it means to be a Minus, it is shown that the Minuses know that Kumagawa is someone who would stand by and stand up for them no matter what.
** To the general student body, Kumagawa presents himself as a strange form of motivation; no matter how miserable they are, they can take comfort in the fact that there is Kumagawa Misogi, someone far more miserable and unfortunate than they are but still facing life with a smile.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler:After Medaka agrees to face him head on on his own terms, he cools off.]]
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Kumagawa managed to seal and banish a virtually omnipotent "Not Equal".]]
* DissonantSerenity: He's almost always calm and happy looking whatever the situation.
* DiscardAndDraw: [[spoiler: In chapter 88 Ajimu returns his original Minus "Book Maker" while taking back "All Fiction". Or at least, she weakens it since she couldn't take the parts he modified.]]
* TheDreaded: Throughout most of the Student Council battles everyone was horrified at the idea of having to go up against him. Not really because he was particularly strong, but because having to interact with him is horrible.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: On his first appearances, he looks so harmless and friendly that only people like Zenkichi and Medaka take him absolutely seriously.
* FailureHero: He's known for never winning or getting what he truly wants, but he can always turn his losses into benefits, and few opponents can truly put him down for good. Even his ability, Book Maker has only been resisted by a few people.
* {{Fetish}}: He has a few "traditional" Japanese fetishes, including NakedApron, [[PantyShot panties]], and adult women that look underaged. Case in point, if he [[spoiler:wins the clocktower trials, he'll make all of Medaka's successors wear one]]. Spoofed when he actually managed to ''win'' the character popularity poll (by a landslide!) and forced ''all the girls in the top 10'' to wear one in the bonus pinup announcing such.
* FirstLove: He likes to claim that his first love was Hitomi, Zenkichi's mother. [[spoiler:And he actually does mean it.]]
* GoodOldFisticuffs: While not as sophisticated as Medaka or Zenkichi in combat, he can certainly hold his own in hand to hand combat.
* GoodSamaritan: Despite being an antagonist, he heals the wounds of others, though his motives in doing so may be rather murky.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Takes some of the most horrific injuries in the manga, only to literally walk away like nothing happened shortly afterwards.
* HeroicSacrifice: He decides to fight Munakata to the death to [[spoiler:protect Kikaijima]], claiming that he feels strangely happy in [[spoiler:dying for a girl's sake]]. Naturally, he survives.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Only, you know, villainous. He earnestly believes that he is weak, stupid, hateful scum but Medaka points out that he actually has a great deal of talent, charisma, loyalty and bravery.
* {{Immortality}}: He can negate any injury with a touch and even if killed outright he'll revive himself automatically whether he wants to or not.
* ILied: Except when he's telling the truth, or being sincere... which makes it even worse, cause you ''just can't tell.''
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: He used it during a game of make-believe to created a magical beast slaying sword, [[spoiler:[[{{Irony}} which immediately crumbles apart because he couldn't imagine being able to win.]]]]
* ImplacableMan: No attack that hits him really means anything since it's just made as though it never happened. [[spoiler:Even after largely losing this ability, he's later stabbed, shot, sprayed with acid, hit with a stun gun and knocked down a flight of stairs, after which he gets up as though nothing happened and pins everyone to the wall.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He fights with giant screws [[HyperspaceArsenal that he pulls out of thin air.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: It's not noted much, but he has supreme accuracy with his screws, especially when launching dozens or even hundreds at once.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: He's fond of shoving massive screws into people. Book Maker also does this, but it's actually harmless.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: During the middle of the Student Council elections, he reveals that [[spoiler:he actually does still have a weakened form of All Fiction left, though the limits on it are unclear.]]
* InfiniteSupplies: Seems to have an infinite supply of massive screws.
* IShallTauntYou: He specializes in psychological combat, especially feelings of dread, nervousness, and anger.
* ItsPersonal: Doing his battle with Munakata he temporarily drops his speech pattern to show his true feelings and makes it clear that Munakata isn't a Minus.
* KnightOfCerebus: The second major one of the series, Kumagawa starts actively bringing up the major tropes that define Shonen Manga and ''Medaka Box'' as a whole, drastically changing the manga from a more typical fighting manga to philosophical perspectives.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Kumagawa likes to talk in terms of manga and compares to the main cast to the protagonist's group in shounen.
* LuminescentBlush: Played for all its dissonant worth.
* MadeOfIron: "All Fiction" aside, he has an almost abnormal tolerance for pain and punishment.
* NumberTwo: He serves as Medaka's second-in-command in the student council.
* OhCrap: His reaction when he found out [[spoiler:Medaka still retained her viewpoint when subjected to his Book Maker]].
* OcularGushers: When he is accepted and appreciated by winning the character popularity polls.
* PaintingTheMedium: His speech is always in 「Japanese quotations」 to show his insincerity. The only exceptions are at the climax of the Kumagawa Incident Arc and at the end of the Unknown Shiranui Arc. Akune comments on how he's returned to his usual insincere speech after the end of his fight with Medaka when the quotations reappear. Takarabe, who has a similar verbal pattern, calls him out on his odd speech.
* PerpetualSmiler: Kumagawa almost always has a wide, happy looking smile on his face. The only exceptions are the occasional smirk and if he drops it entirely, at which point he looks rather haggard and angry.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: What ultimately converted him to Medaka's side, and he was always very loyal to Emukae Mukae, and traumatised people in general. [[spoiler: Also, a Minus Medaka who understood his perspective stated that this is his ''real'' reason that he tried so hard in the council battles.]]
* RealityWarper: His "All Fiction" allows him to erase things from reality at will, though it can't bring them back and can't erase things that have a strong emotional attachment to them, although he can bring the stuff that he has erased back into reality by '''erasing his erasure'''. He once ''erased color from the world'' as a practical joke gone too far because he really didn't like the StudentCouncilPresident of his old school who was a gifted painter and wanted to fuck with him.
* ShadowArchetype: As the tritagonist of the series, Kumagawa is an interesting reflection of both Medaka and Zenkichi; with the former, he's almost equal in power but his disposition seems devoted towards misery, negativity, and failure, whereas Medaka is motivated towards success and happiness, though not without her own misgivings. With the latter, they're both looked down upon and considered losers in some sense due to their abilities, but while Kumagawa resolves to bring people down to his level, Zenkichi works hard to catch up to others.
* TheSociopath: He's constantly lying, can perform acts as heinous as ripping off a girl's face and then complain that Medaka got mad at him for no reason, and enjoys emotionally tormenting his opponents to the point that he surrenders early in his fight with Zenkichi just so he can have free reign to mess with him. Toned down heavily after Medaka defeats him.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Chapter 88. Even Zenkichi states from the onset that he isn't remotely evil as such though, which makes it all the more complicated to deal with him.
* StepfordSmiler: He smiles. All the time. Even when spouting off the most horrific things, or embedding giant screws into your flesh. ''All the time.''
-->'''Kumagawa:''' 「Even if things don't go the way you want them to, even if you lose, even if you don't win, even if you look like an idiot, even if you're walked on, even if you're kicked, even if you're sad, even if you're bitter, even if you're tired of it all, even if it hurts, even if it's hard, even if you're weak, even if you aren't right, even if you're humble...」[[OOCIsSeriousBusiness Through all that, we Minus always laugh!]]
* TakingTheBullet: Throws himself in front of Kikajima when [[spoiler:Munakata tries to shoot her]].
* TallPoppySyndrome: He doesn't want to make people better, he wants to destroy the elite and bring them down to his level. His ability, Book Maker, is based on this. [[spoiler:When he makes a HeelFaceTurn he calms these tendencies down, which correspondingly weakens his ability.]]
* TaremeEyes: Notably the only non-child male drawn with these, which helps accentuate the DissonantSerenity. [[spoiler:He gains TsurimeEyes during his VillainousBSOD, but his usual eye design returns with his bracketed speech after losing to Medaka.]]
* {{Tritagonist}}: Kumagawa is brought up occasionally long before he makes a real appearance with an implied messy backstory with Medaka and Zenkichi. He later becomes an arc villain and represents the antithesis of both Zenkichi and Medaka. [[spoiler:Following his HeelFaceTurn he maintains a large presence in shaping the story, though this may simply be due to his immense popularity.]]
* {{Troll}}: He sometimes seems to piss people off or break them for the hell of it, but when asked about a motivation he simply seems very confused, and basically doesn't know why he is doing things.
* VillainousBSOD: [[spoiler:He has a minor breakdown when Hitomi won't let him see her panic at the thought her son is in danger. Not long after, he has a ''major'' breakdown when Emukae sacrifices herself to protect both him and Zenkichi. This perspective leads to his HeelFaceTurn.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: After Emukae, a fellow Minus, was reformed and changed her outlook on life.]]
* VillainousUnderdog: The epitome of this trope, he's known as the weakest being and can never truly win in the way he wants. However, being the weakest person means he knows the weaknesses of nearly everyone and take on near anyone.
* WhatTheHellHero: Kumagawa gets pissed at Zenkichi near the end of the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc for wasting time [[spoiler:trying to beat Medaka in the Student Council President race]] instead of just mustering up his courage and confessing. [[TalkToTheFist Zenkichi disagrees]] and Kumagawa is okay with that.
* WillfullyWeak: This seems to be his modus operandi. He tends to let his opponents wail on him, only to undo the damage or counterattack viciously. In one instance, he allows Medaka's successors to beat the crap out of him before standing up and casually nailing them all to the wall to show that they're not nearly as good as they think they are.
* XanatosGambit: Used several of these to good effect, mostly in the battle for the Student Counsel seats. As a person who doesn't expect to win anything, setting up situations where a loss is also a win is a very important skill. And of course a win is naturally a win as well.

A girl who just wants to be loved and be happy, but has been twisted thanks to her uncontrollable ability to make everything rot, including living things like any animal she petted. Believing that she was unable to ever become happy, she turned mentally unhinged, and becomes extremely attached to anyone who would come close to her. When she bumps into Zenkichi, he unknowingly extends a hand to her and gains her instant infatuation.
----
* BrokenBird: Unlike the other Minuses, her ability isn't a result of a fractured mind. Rather, she was just a little girl who had a touch of death. It has not done pleasant things to her state of mind.
* CloudCuckoolander: Thanks to being so isolated due to her ability, she has a rather disturbed view on how to talk to people. It's a little funny at first, but mostly depressing.
* CuteAndPsycho: She looks innocent and cheerful, but she shows no real compunctions against killing.
* IJustWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: She's willing to correct Zenkichi in chapter 126 during his [[HeelRealization freakout]] over [[spoiler: Medaka's feelings,]] despite this directly pushing him towards another woman.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: Anyone who extends a hand to her or shows interest in her gains her instant, intense loyalty.
* ImportantHaircut: [[spoiler:She cuts her hair after confessing to Zenkichi because she knows for a fact he loves someone else.]]
* ImprobableUseOfAWeapon: Her weapons of choice are kitchen knives which would make sense if she didn't wield them backwards. Yes that's right, she's holding on ''to the blade itself'' instead of the handles.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Falls for Zenkichi the moment he holds his hand out to her. This later declines in intensity but eventually does return.
* LoveFreak: She gives a huge lovey dovey speech to Zenkichi the first time she meets him.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: First towards Zenkichi after he's polite to her, then to Kumagawa after showing her that her powers have no effect on him.
* MakeThemRot: Her ability causes everything she touches with her hands to begin rotting while still alive until they're completely decomposed. It also affects objects. She can control the intensity and way things decompose, but she [[WalkingWasteland can't turn it off]]. Later she learns to do it "handsfree".
* PlantPerson: Her power can somehow be channeled into the earth and create humus, manipulating plants in this manner.
* PowerIncontinence: Her power to rot anything she touches is horrifying enough, but the inability to control it severely damaged her psyche. [[spoiler: She's able to control it after Kumagawa uses All Fiction to depower it, but it still leaks out whenever she gets emotional.]]
* VillainousCrush: Through the Kumagawa Incident Arc she has a strong infatuation for Zenkichi and quite the unhealthy way of expressing it.
* WalkingWasteland: Anything she touches rots away and dies, including structures.
* {{Yandere}}: When first introduced, she's quite unhinged and she has a warped view of love and seriously creeps Zenkichi out.

Unlike the other Minuses, Gagamaru is soft spoken, polite and genuinely affable. However, this is because of his "Encounter" ability, which shoves off any mental, physical or emotional damage he takes somewhere else, making him the center of a great deal of suffering, for which he is incapable of even feeling guilt as that is ''also'' pushed away. Because of this, he has been left entirely alone as everyone around him was unable to bear the strain. Due to this, he lacks a great deal of emotional balance and can be easily enraged with the right words.
----
* AttackReflector: His Encounter ability shoves all damage taken somewhere else.
* BerserkButton: He reacts with murderous rage when the card games he enjoys are insulted [[spoiler:but only because he has no experience in dealing with negative emotions.]]
* CatchPhrase: "Just an unexpected accident."
* CombatPragmatist: He initially redirects Hinokage's blows to the unfinished building that they're standing on with the intent of having it collapse, as their match would end when someone hits the ground. When this fails, he starts redirecting the damage at Medaka, intending to put her out of action even if Hinokage wins.
* EvilGloating: He gloats over his invulnerability to Hinokage.
* GentlemanSnarker: At least in the original Japanese.
* HighClassGlass: He wears a rather nice looking monocle to help cement his image.
* ImplacableMan: Whatever attack used on him will fail.
* InsultBackfire: After being defeated by Hinokage, he not only accepted but ''expanded and explained'' all the insults that the rest of the school were throwing at him with almost Academic serenity.
* MinorInsultMeltdown: He absolutely explodes when Kumagawa makes a mild insult towards card games.
* NighInvulnerability: Nothing, absolutely nothing had managed to even wrinkle his suit in the entire manga.
* PunnyName: His first name contains the character for "moth", while his surname contains the character for "butterfly".
* OddCouple: With Shibushi since they were five years old. Both of them utterly destroy their surroundings yet are essentially incapable of hurting each other.
* SharpDressedMan: Unlike the other Minuses, he always dresses well and looks composed.
* SlasherSmile: After he was "mortally offended". It dissapeared after his fight with Hinokage.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: A parody on the concept.
* UndyingLoyalty: He is completely loyal to Kumagawa, who helped give him purpose.

She discovered her ability while playing on a children's baseball team as a young girl, and rather than fear her ability, she reveled in it and became a champion little leaguer even as her teammates suffered from unexplained illnesses. Kumagawa mentioned that this fact somehow makes her both the best and the worst member of Class -13.
----
* AxeCrazy: She loves to cause injuries and reopen them. She doesn't plan to kill anyone before she becomes an adult, but only because she wouldn't get punished as much if she did it now.
* HairTriggerTemper: Curiously, she became more stable ''after'' meeting both Chougasaki and Kumagawa. Before she would have hit a total stranger with a bat with enough force to break the floor because his game was too loud. And this was after Chougasaki apologized and lowered the volume of the game immediately.
* HoistbyHisOwnPetard: The Minus plan to recruit Naze backfires on them when [[spoiler:she actually goes and gives herself a minus that perfectly counters Shibushi's.]]

* OddCouple: With Chougasaki, who she first attacked and then followed since she was four. Double so because she is sure that he "would kill her" if she ever leaves him and said this as if it was a good thing.
* PowerOfFriendship: A very disturbing parody with Chougasaki and Kumagawa as they twist the Shonen Jump motto to be pessimistic and horrible. [[spoiler:But really? It's played straight in its own way. They really do all care about each other and do use those bonds to help them achieve greater things..]]
* RepetitiveName: '''Shibu'''shi '''Shibu'''ki.
* UndyingLoyalty: She is utterly faithful to Kumagawa, something that he assumes isn't possible for a Minus like him.
* TakingYouWithMe: She tried this after she realized she couldn't win against Naze. It didn't go as planned.
* VaporWear: She's clearly not wearing a bra.
* WhyDontYaJustShootHim: [[spoiler:If she hadn't been playing around during her fight with Naze, she would have beaten her within seconds.]]

[[folder:Maguro Kurokami]]
[[quoteright:195:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurokami_maguro.png]]
->''"The three pillars that hold up my mentality aren't 'Friendship, Hard Work and Success'. They are 'My Sister, My Sister and My Sister'."''

Maguro is the eldest of the Kurokami siblings who adores his sisters to a worrying degree. Maguro was the one who trained many members of the Thirteen Party and originally worked on the Flask Plan; despite being pretty useless on his own, his Abnormality is the ability to support and analyze others. He is a school drop-out who now manages Ghost Babel, the old academy building. When Medaka came to him for help he agreed to get her and Zenkichi in shape to fight the Thirteen Party.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/JunichiSuwabe (Japanese), Creator/BlakeShepard (English)
----
* AnimalThemeNaming: He is named after a tuna fish.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:The reason he's chosen Zenkichi's side over Medaka's is because he felt guilty about telling him that he'll never be good enough to protect her. And now, after apologizing and asking him to stay by her side, he feels even guiltier because he now understands the kind of person Medaka is and realizes that he was essentially sacrificing Zenkichi for Medaka's sake. One might think that he blames himself for the pressure that Zenkichi's been put under.]]
* AwesomeByAnalysis: His Abnormality allows him to analyze someone's ability and pull out their maximum potential.
* BecauseImGoodAtIt: He's a nice enough guy in his own weird way, but he's perfectly okay with doing things like teaching Munakata Kei hidden weapon techniques just because they suit him. The fact that these techniques actually made it easier for Kei to avoid killing people is simply a bonus he never even considered.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Maguro ''lives'' for his sisters.
* BrotherSisterIncest: He creeps Naze and Medaka out by constantly flirting with them and putting them in embarrassing situations while constantly proclaiming his love for them. That said, that's clearly the line for him: It goes no further and he in fact supports Zenkichi.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Acts very perverted toward his sisters, but is also a talented researcher who knows his allies' and enemies' strengths quite well.
* ChivalrousPervert: Claims to be capable of stealing the eyes, bra, panties, and heart of any girl he meets.
* HairAntennae: He has one.
* LimitedWardrobe: Always wears the same jeans, shirt, and crucifix.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: His hair is around as long as Medaka's. Coupled with his good looks and intelligence he'd probably be popular if he wasn't always hitting on his sisters.
* WeakButSkilled: Maguro himself is nothing special, but he has the ability to enhance other people's abilities. This is best shown during Emukae's debut, when he manages to outspeed her and give her a chop to the back... which is little more than a light tap because he's not the combat type.

Zenkichi's mother, who happens to look like she's 12 years old. A former "psychosomatic surgeon" known as the [[Manga/BlackJack "Licensed Black Jack"]] who worked with Abnormal children. She's also an adult Abnormal, though what her ability actually is isn't entirely clear.
----
* ActionMom: She manages to have a whole ability set based around domestic things mothers do like gardening and sewing.
* ExtremityExtremist: She uses Savate just like her son -- in fact, she's the one who taught him the basics.
* MamaBear: She's always doing her best to keep Zenkichi safe, but she subverts the reaction once to get under Kumagawa's skin.
* MartialArtsAndCrafts: You've never seen sewing made so awesome. She'll pin you to the concrete floor!
* MumLooksLikeASister: Akune mistakes her for Zenkichi's little sister in her introduction.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: The gist of her abnormality is excellence in household tasks. This extends to using garden clippers to fight someone with a GreenThumb or pin those with a TouchOfDeath to the wall.
* MyBelovedSmother: She's rather overbearing on Zenkichi, but since they share the same tastes it goes surprisingly well.
* NewTransferStudent: She transfers into the school in order to have a reason to stick around. When she introduces herself to the class, everyone assumes they must have misheard her actual age.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Physically she looks twelve years old, but she's actually forty-two.
* RepetitiveName: '''Hito'''yoshi '''Hito'''mi.
* SmallParentHugeChild: Her son Zenkichi absolutely towers over her. In fact her introduction has her mistaken for Zenkichi's sister.
* SwissArmySuperPower: Her ability follows the general pattern of being awesome at domestic things. This is rather flexible.

[[folder:Kamome Tsurubami]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/300px-kamome_tsurubami_479.png]]
->''"I meant to act like a guy who was aloof to the world, who hid the hatred towards his father inside his heart. But in the end, it turns out I was just a guy aloof to the world."''

Kamome is Medaka's cousin, discovered by Najimi and brought to the academy, who possesses rather extreme capabilities and an almost protagonist-like nature, which is what caught Najimi's interest. He has great skill and good intentions, but his personality is flawed: he's gloomy, shy, obnoxious, and talks too much, especially about things that most would consider private. He also detests ''Shonen Jump'' and picks a fight with Zenkichi because of it.
----
* AnimalThemeNaming: His name means "seagull" (since he is aloof and noisy). His dad's name means "owl" (since he has a form of wisdom, dwells in the metaphorical darkness, and sees through it), and his aunt's means "dove" (since she was an innocent, white-clad, easy prey for the world). Since his name comes from a bird that's closely related to the ocean, he also ties in with the Kurokami family's theme.
* AntiHero: As a "dark hero" he seems to be a KnightInSourArmor or ClassicalAntihero.
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:After his father dies, he reveals that his aloofness was not just an act. When he lashed out against his father in anger he was still affected by Fukurou's style so he could conclude that he wasn't actually that angry at him. He really had become aloof to the world.]]
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Even though he usually acts aloof and avoids confrontations he's one of the strongest students in Hakoniwa and was able to almost beat Medaka until she discovered his weakness.
* CharacterDevelopment: He seems to be more comfortable in a group since he started hanging around Medaka and Zenkichi.
* ClosetGeek: Though once he gets talking he'll happily tell you about how awesome ''Jump Square'' is, because it's more mature than ''Shounen Jump''.
* DisappearedDad: He never knew what happened to Fukurou [[spoiler:until Najimi told him he was dead, and then it turns out that she was lying.]]
* FaceFramedInShadow: The area around his eyes is perpetually covered in shadow to emphasize his nature as a "dark hero". [[spoiler:He loses it after the TimeSkip, and looks all the better for it.]]
* {{Fetish}}: Has a self-confessed fetish for girls' shoes.
* GravityMaster: His Minus, Octopus, is described as a gravitation skill.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He uses a spinning top in conjunction with his Abnormality, Angler, to control the rotation of the world itself.
* InSeriesNickname: After they become friends, Zenkichi starts calling him "Bami".
* IShallTauntYou: His self-taught confrontation style revolves around making his opponents lose their composure.
* LetsGetDangerous: Well this new guy's pretty weird, no wonder Zenkichi is annoy- wait, did he just [[NoSell block Zenkichi's kick with his own]]?!
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Although they are cousins, he looks up to Medaka, who gets along much better with him than with her real brother.
* LogicalWeakness: Shares one with all the language users. As all of the styles are basically just advanced form of communication, they are rendered useless against opponents that can't communicate, like if they are [[UnstoppableRage blinded by rage]].
* ManChild: He tries extremely hard to project the image of an aloof and mature badass. His social awkwardness, tendency to run his mouth and obsession with Jump Square tend to ruin that image. [[spoiler:Considering his treatment at the hands of his father, it's hard to blame him.]]
* NewTransferStudent: Ajimu transfers him in as part of her plan to challenge Medaka indirectly.
* NoSocialSkills: He can't have a conversation with more than one person at a time, HatesBeingTouched and never makes eye contact.
* OddFriendship: Forms a friendship with Zenkichi of all people, likely out of respect and similarities in character.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: The first time he talks to Medaka, he annoys her enough that she tries to kick him in the face twice. Both times, [[NowThatsUsingYourTeeth he catches her attack with his teeth.]]
* PerpetualFrowner: In a really quite cute, almost pouty way.
* PsychoticSmirk: Flashes one at Zenkichi briefly when they first meet.
* RuleOfSymbolism: Since he is rather egocentric and walled off, his abnormality and spinning top could mean that he feels as if the world revolves around him.
* ShadowArchetype: For both Medaka and Zenkichi. He shares the latter's position as a supporting hero who has become rather cynical, and the former's ineffectual loner status [[spoiler:which is highlighted when it turns out they're cousins.]]
* SoreLoser: After he is defeated by Medaka he delivers a WallOfText filled with excuses and reasons why that match didn't really count.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: He [[LuminescentBlush most definitely]] doesn't read ''[[Manga/ToLoveRu To Love-Ru Darkness]]'', oh no.
* WallOfText: When he goes off on one of his rants.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Compared to nearly every other fighter, he has no skills or styles beyond the three he uses in his self-taught Kamome System. Those three were literally all he needed to trounce Zenkichi and Medaka with relative ease.
* WordsCanBreakMyBones: He's a Provocations Style user, which forces his opponent to lose their composure. It has also been called Prototype, since he developed it himself.
* TheWorfEffect: He quickly establishes himself as someone formidable after blocking Zenkichi's kick and turning Medaka into a bloody mess. Medaka figures out his weakness, that his ability doesn't work if she shuts off her hearing, and wins the second round with ease. Against his father, it's revealed that he has a Plus and a Minus in addition to his prototype Style, and that he is the strongest student at Hakoniwa, [[spoiler: but since his father has the ability to reverse the odds, they are all useless against him for that very reason.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: Ajimu uses his father's death as bait to pit him against [[spoiler:Medaka]], though he doesn't really seem particularly angry. [[spoiler:And his father isn't actually dead either.]]

* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Saki shows up in the last episode of ''Abnormal.''
* MindControl: Saki's ability, as seen in "Good Loser, Kumagawa". It works by embedding iron plates called Error Message Plates in people's foreheads.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: Saki has a habit of stripping when when she gets too exited, much to her embarrassment.
* NoodleIncident: Something happened between her and Kumagawa in the past which resulted in the closure of their old school. Originally, nothing is explained for this except for the implication of Battle With no Winner. This is also probably the reason why Kumagawa was missing during the cultural festival: He was avoiding her.
* SlasherSmile: Saki is prone to make huge, sharklike grins.
* TakeThat: The three of them, especially Saki, are a big TakeThat to how the idol industry work. Saki doesn't have fans, she has customers.
* WingdingEyes: Furousan has a musical note in each one, which she hides them with sunglasses.

Medaka's father and the leader of the extremely wealthy Kurokami Group.
----
* CrazyJealousGuy: Non-romantic case. He admits that part of his motives for refusing to tell Medaka about [[spoiler:Professor Fukurou's whereabouts]] is out of jealousy that she treats him like another father.
* DistinguishedGentlemansPipe: He's always seen smoking one.
* HairAntennae: Appears to be a genetic trait amongst the males of the Kurokami family, as opposed to the IdiotHair of the females.
* LargeHam: He welcomes Medaka during her visit by singing his own fanfare and jumping off the roof of his mansion. Medaka sheepishly tries to pass him off as some random old man that she barely knows.
* MarryThemAll: He happily married all of the seven branch families' suitors, and even says that he's not satisfied with seven. The Jet Black Wedding Feast was organized to make sure that this never happened again.
* SignatureLaugh: Papappapa!

[[folder:Fukurou Tsurubami]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fukurou_tsurubami_1836.png]]

Fukurou Tsurubami is a father figure for Medaka, more so than the one she actually has. He's also the father of Kamome. When Medaka was younger, her family organized what amounts to a special wedding contest which would become known as the Jet Black Wedding Feast, the winner of which would marry Medaka. Though he won, he acted more as a father figure for the young Medaka before he was assassinated.
----
* BrotherSisterIncest: He was in love with his sister and looked up to her, but she didn't really seem to possess that emotion. Even after getting married into the Kurokami family. [[spoiler:He loved his sister so much he set her up to make a daughter similar, but more lovable, that he could be close to. And when that didn't work out settled for a shadow of her. Sheesh.]]
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:Iihiko drops down from out of nowhere, unwittingly crushing half his body.]]
* FatalFlaw: Despite creating Styles, which require personal expression and empathy, he was simply incapable of understanding other people's emotions. This results in his crucial oversight that Styles don't work on people who are too angry to listen to words, [[spoiler:which leaves him completely vulnerable to Iihiko ''accidentally'' crushing him while impatiently looking for a fight.]]
* GoneHorriblyRight: [[spoiler:His plan was for Medaka to be someone with the love of her father and ability of her mother. She exceeded more than he ever imagined, leaving him with the same problem he had with her mother.]]
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler:Iihiko smashes the right side of his body when he lands on him.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: He never faces defeat head on and never gets angry, leaving with him a remarkably cold and manipulative nature. [[spoiler:His inability to truly understand anger is what gets him killed by Iihiko.]]
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: [[spoiler:He was in love with his sister, but she never really had any love in her that people could accept. So she married into the Kurokami family, who have a reputation for having a great deal of love. Fukurou watched her daughter Medaka grow up viewing her as a replacement for his sister, but she was too intense for him. So then he settled on making a ''copy'' of Medaka via Shiranui. All the while, he's having people assassinated and coming up with supernatural techniques.]]
* MadScientist: When it became clear that getting the love of someone as intense as his sister was impossible, he began experimenting and manipulating and eventually invented Styles.
* ParentalSubstitute: As one of his more positive traits, he really did function as a surrogate father for Medaka, which is one reason that [[spoiler:he stopped his WifeHusbandry plan with her. He just got worse from there.]]
* ShadowArchetype: [[spoiler:He loved his sister, who was much like Medaka, but found it difficult to keep up with her, so he set her up with Medaka's father to make someone who would be like her, but with more love and less drive. It fails miserably because Medaka is every bit as intense but also has ''too much'' love for others for him to be able to bear, so he goes and tries to settle for Shiranui, Medaka's shadow. He's basically what Zenkichi would be without determination. And a whole lot of crazy.]]
* SoreLoser: [[spoiler:He's willing and able to ''wipe out humanity'' by dropping the moon on the Earth if he dies before getting what he wants.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:He's the man behind the Second Jet Black Wedding, with the intention of having Medaka grow psychologically so Shiranui would be freed from her Double assignment.]]
* TheReveal: Oh boy. [[spoiler:He's actually nutter-butter insane, and set up Medaka's parents specifically to make her so he could marry her. When that didn't work out, he set up the Second Jet Black Wedding to free up Shiranui so he could at least marry someone like his beloved sister and niece. His plans and character put an entirely new twist on not only the arcs since Ajimu's plan ended, but Medaka's backstory as a whole.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: His Style "Testament" lets him attempt this with [[spoiler:all of ''humanity'' by bringing the ''moon'' down to the Earth.]]
* WifeHusbandry: [[spoiler:Back to Medaka's very birth, he's been grooming her to be someone he could love like he loves his sister. Unfortunately for him, he did a little too well. He also planned on doing the same thing with his ''own'' child, but that failed when his kid turned out to be a boy.]]

[[folder:Hato Tsurubami]]
[[quoteright:324:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hato_tsurubami.jpg]]

Hato Tsurubami was the elder sister of Fukurou Tsurubami, and an infamously hard-working nurse at Hakoniwa General Hospital. She became one of Kajiki Kurokami's several wives, giving birth to the titular heroine Medaka and dying shortly afterwards.
----
* DeathByChildbirth: She had a perfectly normal delivery for Medaka, but has a heart attack immediately afterwards. This was attributed to stress from overworking, as she didn't even take maternity leave while pregnant.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died right after giving birth to the titular heroine.
* RedBaron: The White-Gowned Devil.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Her face greatly resembles Medaka's.
* {{Workaholic}}: She was so dedicated to her job that she once left a relative's funeral to attend to a patient. She earned the title "White-Gowned Devil" because she imposed this behavior on both her coworkers and patients. Her daughter Medaka inherited her work ethic.

!!Not-Equals
[[folder:Najimi Ajimu/"Anshin'in"]]
[[quoteright:176:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ajimu_najimi.png]]
->''"I'm Najimi Ajimu, the founder of Hakoniwa Academy. I'm simply an impartial nonhuman."''

Najimi Ajimu was the beloved vice president in office at the middle school where Kumagawa was student council president. She was so warm and loving that even the dark and twisted Kumagawa loved her. However, something about her bothered him intensely and he apparently ended up ripping her face off. Or is it? Turns out that Kumagawa actually put a ''seal'' on her because she was a nearly omnipotent being that viewed the people around her as indistinguishable from the scenery: A Not Equal.

Ajimu, or Anshin'in as she likes to be called, is a being older than the universe with essentially unlimited power and trillions of different kinds of Abnormal and Minus abilities. She's also very clever, but her view on reality is rather cold despite her friendly attitude. Perhaps because of her age and experience, she knows how the world works quite well and has become very GenreSavvy as a life, making frequent comparisons between what's going on and stories, particularly shonen manga.

She is the founder of Hakoniwa Academy and the Flask Plan.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/NanaMizuki (Japanese), Creator/BrittneyKarbowski (English)
----
* AboveGoodAndEvil: She stated in Chapter 88 that "Good and Bad", "Happiness And Sorrow" and so on are the same thing, and she is sickened of the inapplicable ideals and sentiments of both Medaka and Kumagawa.
* BackFromTheDead: Her introduction as a villain is played up as this, although it's unclear if she was actually dead to begin with. Doesn't really matter.
* BecomingTheMask: Helping Zenkichi against Medaka was mostly to further her own plans, but after [[spoiler: Zenkichi is killed]], she quickly realizes that she actually ''enjoyed'' hanging out with Zenkichi.
* BlastingItOutOfTheirHands: Has a Gun Skill for this called [Gun Hitter]
* CannotTellFictionFromReality: The ultimate twist for Ajimu and the reason behind both her world view and genre savviness [[spoiler:is that after trillions of years of things ''always'' going her way, her mindset has warped to the point where she no longer views the world as real and thinks she's living in some kind of twisted manga.]]
* CatchPhrase: Every time people call her by her real name she replies with "Please call me by my nickname, Anshin'in-san". She even have a skill [Rhetoric Parasol] which is described as a "Catch Phrase Skill".
* ComboPlatterPowers: She has 12,852,051,967,633,867 different abilities (per chapter 142, last page) of all imaginable types which allow her to do pretty much anything. She had a long time to live and apparently spent the whole time learning how to do completely random things.
* ComedicSociopathy: Ajimu indulges in this now and then; when a Double she defeated earlier noted that his speciality is in handguns rather than the sword he had used against her previously, Ajimu immediately gunned him down with a pair of pistols and 100 Skills ForTheLulz.
* CompleteImmortality: She's older than the universe and has shown the ability to appear in a 'waiting room' of sorts from which she can return any time she likes if 'killed' or sealed. [[spoiler:She's later killed by Iihiko and cannot revive herself, but after he is killed and his power fades, the rest of the cast agrees that she'll be back again before too much longer.]]
* ConsummateLiar: So "good" at Machiavellian deceit, charades, and manipulation, that even Zenkichi can't tell whether she is telling the truth, and Kumagawa is probably the only one who even has a shot at discerning it.
* CharacterTics: Often does a hand gesture where she point up in a lecturing sort of way.
* ChekhovsSkill: During her showcase of 600 of her skills, one of the shown skills was [[spoiler:the ability to leave a recording after your death. She uses it to deliver a final message to Kumagawa after she dies.]]
* CurbStompBattle: She stomps the fake suitors in the Jet Black Bride arc in seconds and then [[BlatantLies says it could have totally gone the other way, honest.]]
* CurseEscapeClause: The Book Makers that stop Ajimu's god-like powers are indestructible... but they require Kumagawa to remain as maladjusted as possible. Given [[spoiler:his HeelFaceTurn]], they are starting to weaken and dissipate.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has a rather biting tongue despite her perpetually pleasant demeanor.
* DeathByDisfigurement: Kumagawa [[RashomonStyle may or may not]] have ripped off her face. Of course, she's immortal so death doesn't really 'stick' for her. She shows up again with her abilities merely sealed by Book Maker.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Her skill, [Friendly World], can do this. [[spoiler:After having her suicide prevented by Medaka she lightens up and joins the academy as a student and a sort of AloofAlly.]]
* DissonantSerenity: She's also really friendly looking and giving seemingly genuine, heartfelt smiles no matter what she's feeling or what's going on.
* FauxAffablyEvil: She's also very polite and friendly, but one of the first things we see when she reenters the story is the world from her point of view: People mean absolutely nothing to her. They're indistinguishable from scenery. [[spoiler:After she's defeated, she retains the same politeness, but she evidently grows to care for people (like Kumagawa and Zenkichi) a lot more, by her standards.]]
* GenreSavvy
** Her reason for not taking on Medaka is the TheoryOfNarrativeCausality. Specifically, since Medaka is the ''main character'', whoever fights her is sure to lose... so Ajimu is simply going to wait until the series is over before she continues with her plans.
** Following this she attempts to defeat Medaka indirectly by changing the nature of the story so that now ''Zenkichi'' is the main character. She also says that he's more likely to win because when main characters clash the more heroic one wins and [[spoiler:claims that Medaka committed murder.]]
* GunsAkimbo: She has a specific skill for this called [Left Head Right]
* HalfTheWomanSheUsedToBe: In Chapter 163, [[spoiler:courtesy of a ''rubber band'' she's blown in two by Iihiko.]]
* HappilyFailedSuicide: [[spoiler:Ajimu breaks free of her delusions when Medaka stops her and then points out that she finally ''did'' fail at something -- suicide. And Medaka will just keep on stopping her in the future if she tries again.]]
* IAmLegion: She is in fact 700 million Not Equals.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Kumagawa originally described her like this, but it turns out he was describing the attitude she merely pretended to possess.
* ImmuneToFate: One of her skills [Sequenced Catastrophe] makes her this.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: Can apparently force this on people who shoot at her with the skill [Amateur Amazing]
* ImpossibleTask: She keeps seeking out more and more difficult tasks to do, but regularly achieves the impossible regardless [[spoiler:much to her frustration. She wants to ''lose.'']]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Has a whole category of skills dedicated to this.
* InSeriesNickname: She prefers to be called Anshin'In-san.
* InterruptedSuicide: After Zenkichi [[spoiler:wins the Student Council President election]] Ajimu attempts to [[spoiler:cancel out her immortality and commit suicide]] because she wanted Zenkichi and Medaka to show her that [[spoiler:that she was living the real world and that some things really are impossible.]]
* KillingIntent: Another one of her skills, [Hitman's Identity]
* KillSteal: One of her skill descriptions is "Steal Enemy Experience Points Skill". The skill is called [Archery Picking].
* LackOfEmpathy: She can put up a good act, but she ultimately views people as indistinguishable from the background. She gets better, ultimately [[spoiler:standing up to an enemy who she knows that she can't win against to buy time for the protagonists to run away from him.]]
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Shows up in the last episode of ''Abnormal''.
* LevelDrain: The skill [Lost Password] can force this upon her enemies.
* ManipulativeBitch: People, society, culture, and ideology, are at best all cheap toys for her amusement, and just as expendable (at least initially).
* MediumAwareness: Ajimu speaks as if she is fully aware that she is a character in a manga.
* MetaGirl: She constantly talks in terms of different genres of shounen manga.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Her hair is brown when she's posing as an ordinary student, but it's naturally white.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: When Kumagawa is trying regain his original Minus, she just stomps him into the pavement until he admits that he wants to win.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: She gives the Jet Black Wedding Feast suitors a sampling of 600 themed super-powers -- 100 for each suitor. Too bad they weren't the real suitors. Then she says it could have gone either way. Riiiiight.
** One of the fake suitors shows up again during the Unknown Shiranui arc, only to get bombarded with another 100 skills. She claims that he overwhelmed her into doing so.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: Right before Zenkishi's fight with Iihiko, she appears to him, revealing that she did in fact not die. Medaka confirms it in the finale. Which makes sense, considering that her 700 million human component cells didn't die.]]
* TheOmnipotent: Thanks to her "Master Infinity", "Become God", "Become The Devil", and "Countup" abilities, among others, including ones that let her turn into abstract concepts, she is basically omnipotent.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: She always insist that people refer to her by her nickname, Anshin'in-san, but when she meets Iihiko she quickly adds that she doesn't really want him to call her that, just to show how seriously she takes Iihiko.
* PerpetualSmiler: She always has a smile of some sort on her face unless something particularly surprising happens like [[spoiler:Zenkichi requesting the skill Devil Style]] or later when she sees Iihiko.
* PetTheDog: When she hugs Kumagawa and admits she loves him in Chapter 168. That was Najimi at her sincerest and friendliest ''ever''.
* PhysicalGod: She might as well be a god. She's older than the universe, can't really be killed if she doesn't want to be, has thirteen quadrillion unique abilities and seems to know everything. She has been unable to find anything she cannot do apart from creating a perfect human and beating Iihiko. Medaka thinks Ajimu could beat her, but Ajimu disagrees. Of course, if there was any doubt remaining she always has her "Become God" skill [Spec Over]...
* PinballProjectile: Can do this with the skill [Trampoline Bound].
* QuickDraw: One of her Gun Skills named [First Class Gunman].
* RealityWarper: Through use of her quadrillions of skills she can do essentially anything she wants.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She's far older than the universe itself. She looks like a teenaged human girl because that's how she feels like looking.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Verbally rips Kumagawa a new one until she finally forces him to admit that he's ''not'' okay with always losing. He wants to win. He wants to beat the elite.
* SacredFirstKiss: Claims she gave her first kiss in order to Kumagawa to restore his Book Maker... [[SubvertedTrope but even if she's telling the truth she obviously didn't really care.]]
* SealedEvilInACan: The 'evil' part is somewhat questionable, but she was sealed by Kumagawa's Book Maker until the start of her arc, at which point the seal slowly begins fading. Upon being unsealed she just wanders around doing whatever.
* ShadowArchetype: She's a mirror to Medaka with all her overwhelming abilities. Her jaded nature towards success shows what Medaka could be like in the future if she continued to succeed. In fact, right before the timeskip, Medaka used a hundred skills against one of the proxy suitors, including Create A Universe, showing that she could have been on the path to turn into a Najimi, if she had not grown up from it.
* SmokeOut: One of her Ninja Skills: [Bad Ball]
* SuperStrength: Carries a massive net straight up the side of the wall and drops it on the roof so that Medaka has a goal to protect.
* TheOmnipotent: There are only two things that she has not been able to do: Beat Iihiko and create a perfect human. (She believed herself unable to beat Medaka, due to the latter being the main character, but Medaka herself believed the opposite, due to Najimi technically having far greater power.) Anything else is basically fair game.
* TimeAbyss: She's 3,402,193,822,311 Years and 287 Days Old. Yes, that is thousands of times older than the universe. It was probably a very boring life.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: [[RashomonStyle Initially]] presented as being a pure, gentle and perfect person in flashbacks, but then it turns out that at best she's sarcastic, indifferent and manipulative.
* {{Ubermensch}}: Over the course of her life, she's decided that good and evil, happiness and sorrow and all sorts of other ideas have no real value.
* VictoryIsBoring: She doesn't want to win. She ''always'' wins. If you always win is there any real meaning to what you're doing?
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She predates the universe by trillions of years, so there's no way she's human. She also has a lot of shapeshifting skills, including ones for growing scales, massive claws, becoming a human and more.
* WallOfText: Whenever she fights, the page is clogged up with [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill approximately 100 skills]].
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: As a villain, she has pure white hair and is obviously very mysterious. It's not even clear what she actually is.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Iihiko oneshots her with a rubber band because she can't use skills on him.]]

[[folder:Hanten Shiranui]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_face_revealed_5262.png]]

One of the "Delayed Two" along with Ajimu who always appears with his back to the "camera" displaying the unequal sign of his class. He is from the Shiranui clan and acts as her observer of sorts.
----
* AllPowerfulBystander: He's implied to be virtually omnipotent, but he never does anything. He doesn't even ''speak'' before the end of the first arc he appears in.
* BigDamnHeroes: Running over Iihiko and saving the lives of all of Medaka's crew.
* TheFaceless: Always shown from behind or covered up by something until the middle of the Unknown Shiranui Arc, [[spoiler:taking Ajimu's place after Iihiko kills her]].
* IdiotHair: Like the rest of his clan.
* MeaningfulName: After [[spoiler:confirming Ajimu's death]], he says that he has "reversed" with her and asks the group to call him Hanten'in. This in kanji (反転院) is not only a pun off his original name and Ajimu's, but also off of "hanten" (反転), which alternately can mean "reverse."
* NewTransferStudent: Transfers in with Ajimu, but doesn't really do anything for a good seventy five chapters or so.
* OlderThanHeLooks: [[spoiler:Ajimu met him a hundred and fifty years before the present, but he looks no older than twenty.]]
* OneManArmy: He is ''supposedly'' so strong that it would take the entire Student Council, Class -13, and several Pluses to have a ''chance'' to defeat.
* SuperEmpowering: It's revealed in chapter 123 that [[spoiler:he can ''make'' an unlimited number of skills and give them to other people.]]

[[folder:Aoki Aka]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aoki_aka_4485.png]]

Chairwoman of the Health Preservation Committee, she runs one of the challenges in Medaka's treasure hunt. Her healing ability, granted by Ajimu, is focused around the manipulation of diseases and is thus considered a Minus.
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: Begs Kumagawa for mercy so she won't have to come to school in a NakedApron.
* AlliterativeName: '''A'''ka '''A'''oki.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: Her ability is not quite healing, but rather manipulating illnesses. She's kind of sadistic, but works to keep the school healthy.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: For her trial, she would infect a harmless but painful sickness for losing. Kumagawa topped her though, demanding she go to school in HadakaApron if she lost.
* DeadlyDoctor: She seems to enjoy ''giving'' illnesses much more than curing them.
* FemmeFatalons Her ability manifests as giant spiky claws on the tips of her fingers. They look more like WolverineClaws, but don't appear to be functional weapons.
* FourIsDeath: The fourth challenger and [[spoiler:a blurb has her killing Kumagawa and Takarabe]].
* HealingHands: She is the reason why no one in the academy is dead or even crippled. Remember that the Normal students can end with all their bones broken by Unzen Myouri for being a nuisance, let alone the Plus and Minus battles and you get how important (and powerful) she is.
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate: She's the school doctor for all intents and purposes, but she likes to cause suffering more than cure it.
* NakedApron: Kumagawa didn't get her to wear it in the story proper, [[spoiler:but Volume 13's inside cover sure did]].
* OhCrap: She makes a bet with Kumagawa that if she loses she'll have to come to school in a NakedApron. She dominates the points after awhile, but then the score flip rule seems to be coming.
-->'''Aoki Aka:''' ''There is 1/3 chance that tomorrow Aka will have to wear nothing but an apron.''
* PunnyName: The three characters of her name mean [[ColorfulThemeNaming 'Red', 'Blue/Green', and 'Yellow']].
[[/folder]]

!!Medaka's Successors

Medaka's Successors are a group of five junior high girls, the only ones who survived Kumagawa's devastating elimination speech. They responded to Medaka in the hopes of taking the student council positions when they enter high school. Of course, it turns out that they're all Not Equals (meaning: people with loose grip on reality) planted by Ajimu, but it turns out that everyone knew all along.

They have no special abilities.
----

[[folder:Ima Takarabe]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ima_takarabe_5018.png]]

A glasses-wearing girl with a nice hat. She talks in a very polite and respectful manner, and want to be like Medaka because of her selflessness. However, it's an act: her true personality can be quite nasty, and the cracks in the act occasionally show in the form of strikethrough text when she's angry enough.
----
* BlatantLies: Says what she really thinks crossed-out, than the sugar-coated version.
-->[[(crossed out) What bullshit are you talking about, you scum?]] Yes! I accept your prompt advice with thanks!
* DeliberatelyCuteChild: She acts polite and sweet, but Kumagawa instantly sees her for the jerk that she is.
* GroupHug: When the other group members stick up for her and prove the friendship of the group, a crying Takarabe hugs them all and gives a lot of tsundere lines.
* HeelFaceTurn: After interacting with Kumagawa and seeing his good side and that Medaka is a good person, she loosens up and begins really believing in what the Student Council is doing.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Apparently she is aware of Kumagawa's bracket quotes.
* NoAccountingForTaste: After Kumagawa one ups her after the group ambushes him, she begins developing a crush.
* TortureTechnician: She considers herself the torture specialist of the group.
* TokenMiniMoe: She looks quite a bit younger than the other girls.
* {{Tsundere}}: Over time, her crossed out speech patterns become not just a sign of her being rude, but also where she addresses her hidden ''positive'' feelings, especially towards her friends and later Kumagawa.

[[folder:Shori Wanizuka]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shori_wanizuka_8616.png]]

Shori Wanizuka is a cold, eyepatch clad girl who values strength and has a grudge against Akune for apparently going soft and becoming more pragmatic due to Nekomi Nabeshima. She maintains her strict attitude in front of the group, but when no one is relying on her she becomes an emotional airhead.
----
* BadassNormal: As her appearance would suggest, she's the strongest in the group and capable of matching Akune in a fight.
* BrokenPedestal: She's interviewed by Akune, whom she used to idolize but now thinks that "Nekomi Nabeshima pulled [his] fangs [out]". Akune has to deal with this later in the arc.
* DeterminedDefeatist: Acknowledges that her chances of [[spoiler:beating Akune in a fair fight]] are slim to nonexistent, but tries anyway. [[spoiler:She loses the fight, but she forces him to commit a foul in the process. Not that it was a judo match, but still pretty good.]]
* EpicFail: Just as everyone believes they've beaten the invincible Medaka at penalty shoot-out, she attempts a header into the soccer goal... and misses the ball completely. Well, that's what happens when you have no depth perception.
* EyepatchOfPower: Played with. She certainly looks tough with it and is probably the most effective fighter in the group, but her depth perception is shown to be awful.
* EyeScream: It's implied that she destroyed one of her eyes in order to become a Normal. It's quite odd looking.
* {{Fangirl}}: Once Akune regains her approval she turns into a mushy fangirl when they're alone together.
* HeelFaceTurn: Upon seeing that Akune has only improved from the time she admired him, she drops her grudge.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Rather than any fancy, clean martial art she's a practitioner of combat sambo, which has no honor and focuses on destroying your opponent. [[spoiler:She's good enough to force Akune to break the rules of Judo.]]
* LongLostRelative: She's Munakata's younger sister.
* OralFixation: First walked on screen with a [[ArtisticLicenseGunSafety pistol in her mouth like most people would have a lollipop]]...What?
* WhenSheSmiles: When she warms up to Akune again she gives a big, stupid and adorable smile. Akune's reaction is mostly comprised of resignation at the sudden lack of independence she's showing [[spoiler:which helps him realize his own.]]

[[folder:Kiki Kikitsu]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiki_kikitsu_5845.png]]

A short-haired, goggles-wearing GamerGirl who describes herself as talented at everything, though she finds nearly everything in life boring as a result. Thus, she finds excitement in a challenge, and there's nothing more challenging than surpassing the perfect Medaka.
----
* GamerGirl: She plays games all the time and does all sorts of challenges.
* GogglesDoNothing: As of yet, we have no explanation for them and we'll probably never get one.
* HeelFaceTurn: She doesn't get any particular focus to show why, but when the rest of the group warms up to the Student Council she joins them.
* RepetitiveName: '''Kiki'''tsu '''Kiki'''.
* TeenGenius: She's noted as being quite intelligent and capable, which has led to her getting bored.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tsugiha Yojirou]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsugiha_yojirou_4921.png]]

A rather normal-looking girl, though with a rather masculine name. Her mind, on the other hand, isn't so normal, as she claims to be a MagicalGirl called Tsugihagista SS Ruby-Sapphire the Fifth.
----
* CallingYourAttacks: When she uses a stun gun, she calls it "Thunder Bolt" and "Water Bolt" is her throwing acid on you.
* TheChosenOne: She believes she is the Chosen Warrior of Heaven, sent to our world to stop the Great Demon King Wargold. She isn't really. Of course, [[MindScrew then it turns out that WarGold is real when Medaka has to fight him]].
* CloudCuckooLander: She's convinced herself that she's a magical girl and that [[DaydreamBeliever everything fictional is real and part of her story.]]
-->'''Yojirou:''' My real name is [[OverlyLongName Tsugihagista SS Ruby-Sapphire the Fifth.]] Maybe you know me as [[LuckyCharmsTitle The Magical]] ☆ Wonder Tsugiha from the Neighborhood. This child who sits on my right should is my fairy partner Diana! Oh, I'm sorry, normal humans can't see her....
* DaydreamBeliever: She's an in universe example: Her friends refuse to talk about manga with her because she'll decide that the manga is real, part of her magical girl persona and then finally co-opt the characters into being her friends.
* GenderBlenderName: Yojirou is a bit masculine for such a girly-girl, but that's not what she meant when she asked Zenkichi to not call her that...
* HeelFaceTurn: She doesn't get any particular focus to show why, but when the rest of the group warms up to the Student Council she joins them.
* ImaginaryFriend: Diana, the fairy that sits on her right shoulder.
* MagicalGirl: She's a living parody of the idea since it's all in her imagination. She's just a delusional middle school girl.

[[folder:Suishou Kibougaoka]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suishou_kibougaoka_7567.png]]

An autonomous android with a French accent. She came to Hakoniwa Academy in order to learn of the heart.
----
* CatchPhrase: "Mechanically speaking..."
* CookingDuel: Not having to eat and not knowing how to cook are separate things.
* CuttingTheKnot: Initially averted. Medaka challenges the group with a ridiculously difficult game that Suishou could hack in an instant, but chooses not to in order not to stand out too much. Medaka tells her that she expects her successors to use every ounce of their ability and she proceeds to break the unwinnable game and make it fair.
* DeafComposer: She has no sense of taste, but is an amazing cook nonetheless.
* EverythingsSexierInFrench: Apparently has a French accent and answers using "oui" and "non" instead of "hai" and "iie".
* HeelFaceTurn: Her attitude towards the Student Council turns around first when she cooks with Kikaijima and later during the gaming event Medaka sets up.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: The only girl that doesn't scream in embarrassment when [[RunningGag Zenkichi walks in on them undressing]]. Possibly justified in that modesty wasn't part of her programming.
* InSeriesNickname: Takarabe refers to Kibougaoka as "Non-chan", likely due to her GratuitousFrench.
* LethalChef: Subverted. She makes the claim that she's not very good at cooking, but it turns out that just because she can't taste food doesn't mean she can't cook it.
* ReadTheFreakingManual: Tells Medaka to do this, but much more politely, obviously.
-->'''Kibougaoka:''' Please read the attached manual carefully later.
* RobotGirl: She is a prototype of an autonomous humanoid android called "Loup" .
* SupremeChef: Despite not needing to eat, she can cook an absolutely grand feast.
* ThreeLawsCompliant: Invoked and averted after revealing she lied about not knowing how to cook: "In the robot world we've disposed of those slavery laws long ago."
* TinMan: Claims to have come to Hakoniwa Academy to study the human heart. She also acknowledges that while she's an exceptional cook she can't sense if the food she makes is "delicious". Apart from her robotic speech that may be no more than an affectation you'd have no way of knowing. Medaka's later comments indicate this was rather intentional: Just because she understands the human heart perfectly well doesn't mean she realizes it.
* WingdingEyes: Has cross-shaped "highlights" in her eyes.

!!Jet Black Wedding Feast

[[folder:Namanie Nienami]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/namanie_nienami_9106.jpg]]

One of Medaka's suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast. A powerful swordswoman with high pain tolerance. Her Style is not initially clear, but turns out to be Contradictory Conjunction.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''N'''amanie '''N'''ienami.
* ComicalOverreacting: She often acts incredibly surprised with things she should already know.
* TheComicallySerious: A lot of her gags comes from her reacting seriously to the current situation, but those proper responses clashes with her normal {{Cloudcuckoolander}} tendencies.
-->'''Kamome:''' You're right, but... even when you say something normal, I can't help but hear it as something stupid.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She is not exactly all there. In fact, post-HeelFaceTurn, she only gets stranger, striking random poses and speaking with her emotionless face the whole time. She knows it too, which makes her recognize that she's too unreliable.
* DualWielding: Goes way further than that. She wields ''seven'' swords at once. How? ''By impaling three swords into each arm while wielding another one.''
* FeelsNoPain: Has a high enough pain tolerance to withstand an attack from the strongest member of the 100th Student Council and ''shove swords into her arms'' without flinching. [[spoiler:She's resistant to ''sharp'' pain but hypersensitive to ''dull'' pain. Considering that biting down on her neck really hard still hurts.]] [[note]]It's later proven that her tolerance is a byproduct of her style, making it so that things that should hurt a lot do scratch damage to her and vice-versa.[[/note]]
* HeelFaceTurn: She just joins the good guys at the end of the arc with no real reason. [[spoiler:Fukurou pretends that she's TheMole for a second, but they both know she's not.]]
* TheMole: [[spoiler:Subverted. Fukurou says she's this but then says it was a lie and she's generally confused by his comment as well.]]
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: Much of her interactions with the other characters amounts to them snapping at her for not knowing things she should, and knowing things that she shouldn't have been around to know. At the end of the Jet Black Bride arc, she simply heads back with them for no particular reason.
* NominalHero: Nobody knows why she sticks with the good guys after her defeat. Not even her. Near the climax, she points out that she's a "half-baked person" who generally has no reasoning for whatever she does beyond "ItSeemedLikeAGoodIdeaAtTheTime".
* RazorWind: She introduces herself by slicing a helicopter in half with one swing of her sword. She immediately tops herself by slicing an aircraft carrier in half.
* WillfullyWeak: Her Style is actually the most powerful one. [[spoiler:According to the Styles' creator Professor Fukurou]], she could have performed much better in the Jet Black Wedding Feast if she had used its full potential. She claims she didn't because she didn't want to rely on the Style so much.
* WindsOfDestinyChange: Her Style. [[spoiler:By using the word "therefore", she can materialize the lowest possible outcome of a given situation, effectively manipulating probability.]]

One of Medaka's suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast. Fights on all fours with a scythe in her mouth. She has the Kanji User style.
----
* RunningOnAllFours: Spends the whole fight on hands and knees [[spoiler:which she actually needs to do for her Kanji style to work.]]
* SinisterScythe: Carries a scythe in her teeth for some reason.
* WordsCanBreakMyBones: As a "Kanji User", she can warp reality by manipulating objects based on their Kanji representations.

One of Medaka's suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast. A skilled fighter even without using her Style, Misconversion.
----
* CuteLittleFangs: She has a really tiny fang that's actually sort of difficult to see.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Screwdrivers, in the exact same way Kumagawa uses his screws.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:Right after Emukae's confession she was instantly impaled by Kumagawa's Book Maker which effectively will seal her ability for at least thirty years.]]
* PointlessBandaid: Has a tiny bandaid on her nose for some reaosn.
* ThisIsReality: Tells Emukae that [[spoiler:her HeroicSacrifice would have worked]] if this was a manga.
* WordsCanBreakMyBones: Similar to Kanaino except her version breaks the kanji into nonsense phrases ''a la'' BlindIdiotTranslation.
* WrenchWench: To Naze's horror, she disassembles their ride the moment the group turns their back.

One of Medaka's suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast. A voluptuous blonde in a rather revealing outfit.
----
* CombatPragmatist: [[spoiler:She used Medaka's friends aged back to babies as human shields to stop Medaka's counter attack. Medaka calls her out on it but she feels no shame over the act.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Not only is her style one of the most powerful, she can prove herself to be far more intelligent than she seems.
* FountainOfYouth: Her Style. She can manipulate people's age by using Nursery Rhymes. The louder the song, and the closer you are to her, the more you age down, ultimately reverting people into helpless babies.
* SpeechImpediment: Seems to have issues pronouncing certain words.
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:She doesn't seem to have any issues with killing Medaka's group turned into babies, even mentioning how easy babies are to kill.]]

One of Medaka's suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast. She projects the image of a princess.
----
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: She's a good hand to hand fighter, but after making hundreds of thousands of copies Medaka beats them all.
* DoppelgangerAttack: Creates 640 thousand copies of herself to fight Medaka.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:Medaka takes her and her many copies out completely off panel.]]
* SelfDuplication: Her Style allows her to create hundreds of copies of herself. [[spoiler:Each copy can also create an equal number of copies, but apparently that's the limit.]]
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She can copy another person's appearance and ability.

One of Medaka's suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast, and their de-facto leader, despite having the body of a kindergartner.
----
* AntiquatedLinguistics: She uses the archaic personal ''male'' pronoun "wagahai", and addresses others with the equally outdated pronoun "nare".
* ArcVillainess: She leads the suitors during the Jet Black Wedding Feast.
* AlliterativeName: Both first and last name begin with 'Momo.'
* BizarreTasteInFood: So far, the only thing she's ever seen eating is ''metal''.
* CreepyChild: She is the youngest-looking of Medaka's suitors, as well as the most devious and sadistic, going as far as taking Medaka's friends hostage and demanding that Medaka [[EyeScream gouge her own eyes out]] if she loses.
* LuredIntoATrap: [[spoiler:Medaka defeats her not by actually winning the game of shiritori, but by forcing her to use every character except 'ko' 'u' 'sa' and 'n', requiring Momo to say "kousan (I surrender)" to win. If Medaka had won without the trick, she'd have just reneged on the deal, but the trick proves Medaka really is much better than her.]]
* RepetitiveName: ''Momo''zono ''Momo''.
* RuleOfSymbolism: Since her defining trait is putting labels on people, she can seal them into playing cards. And since she is emotionally retarded, she looks like a kindergartener.
* SmugSnake: She gave it a good try, but Medaka outsmarted her in the end.
* TeamKiller: She non lethally betrayed her friends in a word game against Medaka in an attempt to win.

!!Shiranui Village
[[folder:Hansode Shiranui]]
[[quoteright:242:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiranui_hansode.png]]

Shiranui is a young looking girl that is Zenkichi's best friend. She enjoys causing troubles and watching the action from afar rather than actively participating, though she can usually be counted on to help Zenkichi despite her dislike of Medaka. Her grandfather runs the school and the Flask Plan, giving her a great deal of information into how the school is running. Due to being so whimsical, it is never truly clear what she will do in any situation. She is the focus of the Unknown Shiranui Arc.

She is almost always seen eating and possesses the ability known as Real Eater, which deals with manipulation of abilities.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/EmiriKatou (Japanese), Creator/HilaryHaag (English)
----
* ACupAngst: After Unzen calls her "air boobs" she gets offended.
* {{Ahoge}}: It seems to be a family trait. As for Shiranui, she's not stupid, but she acts like a ditz fairly frequently.
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:While she was only Zenkichi's friend as part of her act, she splashes water into the face of an underling who mocks him and admits that she's having trouble letting go of those feelings entirely.]]
* BigEater: Nearly always seen stuffing her face. She even has an ability based on it, Real Eater, which can manipulate the abilities of others. [[spoiler:Her big eater attitude was part of her act as Medaka's double. After Medaka regains her appetite for meat she no longer has to be a big eater. She can't even finish a normal sized bento.]]
* BlushSticker: She has a perpetual teasing grin and two little pink ovals on her cheeks.
* BirdRun: Does a bird ''skip'' in episode 2.
* TheChessmaster: She's often subtly manipulating events to support the student council from behind the scenes.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She pretends to be meaner than she really is. [[spoiler:And after admitting to that facade she tries to do it again later during her signature arc.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Uses a variety of kitchen utensils in combat.
* InformedFlaw: We're told that she and Medaka hate each other, yet the hostility we actually see is purely from Medaka's end (such as chastising Zenkichi for getting too friendly with her and blocking her phone number). Shiranui has actually helped Medaka several times. [[spoiler:Her supposed opposition was an act anyway.]]
* ManipulativeBitch: She rather seems to enjoy prodding events in the direction that would most amuse her.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She's fifteen, but looks at least five years younger. [[spoiler:After a ten year timeskip, she looks exactly the same. She claims that it's a side effect of temporarily being Iihiko's host.]]
* PlatonicLifePartners: Despite the vitriolic nature of their relationship, Zenkichi and Shiranui are nearly inseparable best friends
* PrecisionFStrike: After Kumagawa gets her to show her HiddenHeartOfGold and makes her show her true feelings about her friends by [[spoiler:erasing Zenkichi from existence]].
-->'''Shiranui:''' What the hell did you do to my beloved friend, you bastard!? I'll fucking kill you, Kumagawaaaaaaa!!!!
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: ''Yes''. When [[spoiler: Kumagawa used his All Fiction to {{Unperson}} Zenkichi, Shiranui lost it and immediately attacked Kumagawa even though she has never engaged in physical combat up to that point. Her UnstoppableRage unfortunately was ultimately stoppable.]]
* ShadowArchetype: To Zenkichi; both have [[spoiler:dedicated their lives to helping Medaka, Zenkichi because of love, Shiranui due to her duty as Medaka's double. Shiranui helps Medaka through her perceived opposition, and it's even remarked that she's better at helping Medaka than Zenkichi.]]
* SignatureLaugh: "Ahya hya hya hya ✰"
* SitcomArchNemesis: In contrast to characters like Kumagawa or Ajimu, Shiranui is usually not a threatening antagonist. Regardless, she and Medaka have a mutual dislike for each other. [[spoiler:She's at odds with Medaka on purpose as part of her job.]]
* SuperEmpowering: ZigZagged. She can alter other skills, changing how they work. It has been stated to have no weakness, [[BrokenAce unless it can be used]].
* TokenMiniMoe: Among the main cast, most of the people look their ages. Shiranui looks to be ten at most.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Zenkichi. He's the only person that any effect on her, and every decision she makes, however ambiguous and obtuse, helps him in some way. [[spoiler:In a weird way she had this for Medaka.]]
* WildCard: Spontaneously decides to join Class -13 as a SecretTestOfCharacter for Zenkichi. It's never really clear what she'll do, but Zenkichi has faith in her anyway.

[[folder:Iihiko Shishime]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iihiko_shishime_5552.png]]

Iihiko is a former hero of the world and a "Main Character" like Medaka. He resides in the Shiranui village. He is extremely dangerous if anyone gets in his way, but since all he wants is to continue living he's rarely a threat to others. He is immune to skills, is very fast and powerful and inflicts wounds that will not heal.
----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: While Iihiko certainly started out as a human, he looks quite demonic now.
* AttackReflector: If an attack is strong enough for him to recognize it as such and he defends against it, the following defense will be so great that the attacker will receive damage accordingly. [[spoiler:When Medaka hits him with her Kurokami Phantom, he's not only unscathed, but the backlash stops her heart.]]
* BigDamnVillain: [[spoiler:He bursts through a wall to retrieve Shiranui and rips Fukurou in half without ever noticing the guy.]]
* CatchPhrase: Fresh!
* CherryTapping: He likes to use mundane, inoffensive objects like a rubber band or a pair of glasses as lethal weapons.
* CombatPragmatist: He acts like an honorable hero and fights directly, but should he perceive a genuine threat incoming he'll quickly break his word or [[spoiler:use his host's body as a hostage, though this one gets him killed by Shiranui.]]
* CurbstompBattle: He is far more powerful than anyone he faces off against due to their abilities not working on him. Ajimu notes that she fought him countless times and never won. Not once. [[spoiler:He 'kills' her with a ''rubber band.'']]
* CuteLittleFangs: [[spoiler:Gains them when possessing Shiranui.]]
* DeaderThanDead: Whatever damage he inflicts including lethal injuries will never heal. Someone that is killed by him cannot be revived even by All Fiction. [[spoiler:All his abilities work on himself, meaning Shiranui uses this to kill him, after which he stays dead and then his power fades, [[SubvertedTrope allowing everyone to be revived]] while ''he'' remains KilledOffForReal.]]
* DeliberateValuesDissonance: He doesn't really get modern ethics. Doesn't really care either. [[spoiler:After beating Medaka to a pulp he grants her the honor of his respect and regard and is utterly baffled when she won't accept an honorable defeat.]]
** Before this, when he actually managed to [[spoiler:kill her, he praises her for putting up a good fight and regards Zenkichi's distress over her corpse as insulting.]]
* DemonicPossession: His ultimate goal in the story is to do this to [[spoiler:Shiranui. He succeeds, but she eventually regains control long enough to make him kill himself.]]
* TheDreaded: Iihiko ''terrifies'' people who know about him. Even Ajimu.
* FairplayVillain: [[spoiler: Subverted:Initially he agrees to Medaka's somewhat ridiculous bet and promises to stand still, but when he sees that he's in actual danger from her second attack he immediately dodges it.]]
* FallenHero: He's a legendary hero, but his country is long gone so he has nothing left anymore. Thus, his heroism faded with time and all he has is a desire to keep on living.
* FlamingHair: His inferno-like hair gives him a demonic appearance when coupled with his horns.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:His "echo" congratulates Medaka and her friends on their victory and comforts her as she gets ready to follow a course of action that will likely lead to her death.]]
* GrandTheftMe: An interesting case. Iihiko is actually a heroic identity from over 5000 years ago that is transferred to a new person each generation. [[spoiler:After Medaka defeated him he just jumped over to his next host, Shiranui.]]
* HeroKiller: He terrifies even Ajimu Najimi, who should be by all rights absolutely indestructible. After the likes of Kumagawa, the story ups the threat he poses by making it so the damages he inflicts can't be repaired. He even manages to (temporarily) [[spoiler:kill the titular heroine.]]
* HornedHumanoid: Despite being human, he has a pair of massive horns.
* ImmortalsFearDeath: [[spoiler:He screams in panic and begs for his life when Shiranui regains enough control over her body to use his own unstoppable attack against him.]]
* InvincibleVillain: Hell, even ''Ajimu Najimi'' was also no match for him. [[spoiler:The only power that could destroy him for good was his own.]]
* LightningBruiser: He's extremely fast and powerful as well as nearly impossible to damage.
* NoSell: He completely ignores all ability based attacks done to him except Styles.
* PointedEars: Despite being human, he has very long pointed ears.
* RunOrDie: When TheCavalry showed up, it was only to grab what was left of the heroes, and run the hell away before they all get KilledOffForReal.
* SignatureLaugh: "''Geh Geh Geh Geh!''" [[spoiler:Which is the first sign that he's jumped into Shiranui.]]
* ThirdPersonPerson: [[CatchPhrase Fresh!]] This Iihiko is amused by the lack of pronouns!
* VillainDecay: [[spoiler:His remaining "echo", after being punched out of Shiranui, with his horns broken, was not nearly as formidable, to the point that Medaka could defeat him.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:When Medaka continues to get up and fight despite all her injuries, and just as Shiranui makes him kill himself.]]
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: What Iihiko destroys cannot be healed or repaired. In case it's not obvious, what he kills also stays dead, because the concept of 'being alive' can't be made to re-inhabit the deceased. [[spoiler:Medaka has to redefine for herself what it means to 'be alive', in order to come BackFromTheDead.]] Backfires on Iihiko when [[spoiler:Shiranui regains control of her body long enough to hit herself. After that, his ability fades and Medaka heals everyone.]]
