Several Overlords flock to one who has... *snort* tragedy befall him. Whether to help, take advantage, or just laugh, they are the most powerful beings in TheMultiverse; and should one gain advantage over the others, they will rule all.

These are the principal players in the struggle for control of the Netherworld in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome''.
----
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:In General]]
* AffablyEvil: Despite their statuses as monstrous rulers, the Overlords are for the most part civilized toward one another....at least by EldritchAbomination standards. They do sometimes take potshots at each other and have agendas of their own, but there's less in-fighting than expected.
* TheCameo: Alex, Petta, Pram and Zetta have all gone on to cameo in later Nippon Ichi titles to various degrees.
* CardCarryingVillain: Everyone except Trenia, per their status as Overlord.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Downplayed. Typically, a group of homicidal uber-psychos would be constantly flailing at each other for power. During the story however, the majority of the Overlords cling to Zetta out of curiosity rather than opportunity. When the trope does come up, it's typically for gags (often at Drake's expense).
* CosmicEntity: Every member of the cast is one of these, hanging out in the cosmic expanse between universes.
* DefeatMeansPlayable: All of the Overlords except Trenia can be recruited in the Post-Game by beating their special stages.
* DimensionLord: Every member of the cast is, to varying degrees, uber-powerful lords of entire realms that they manage (Yes, even Drake). Trenia is also able to stand amongst them despite not being one herself, which confuses everyone at some point. [[spoiler: Until it's revealed she's [[CosmicKeystone the spirit of the Sacred Tome]]; indirectly making her ''the'' Dimension Lord among even them]].
* WhoNeedsEnemies: The truce between the Overlords is stable enough but the group is a melting pot of agendas. Zetta's a mindless conqueror skeptical of everybody but Babylon, Pram is scheming past everybody, Drake is constantly vying for power grabs, Alex ambushes Zetta repeatedly under the delusion he's TheRival, Salome hates everyone that isn't Zetta and Seedle hates everyone that isn't Seedle. The only two close to "nice" are Babylon and Micky and even they're seasoned conquerors with casualties under their belts. The Overlords can certainly get along, but everyone gives Zetta's plight the urgency of a drive-in movie and are obviously out for themselves through the whole thing.

!!Zetta (The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos)
!!!Voiced by: Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (JP), Creator/CrispinFreeman (Initial release), Creator/RichardEpcar (''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories''), Creator/PatrickSeitz (''VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten'' onward, including Petta Mode) (EN)
[[quoteright:345:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Zetta_little_3646.png]]
Zetta was once the most powerful overlord of all the Netherworlds. Due to a prophecy from the Sacred Tome that foretold of its destruction by his hands (which he accelerates by ''burning the book''), Zetta loses his body and binds his soul to the Sacred Tome in order to save himself. Since he can no longer conquer the Netherworld by himself, he has to wish into existence a horde of PlayerMooks to do his work for him.
----
* AnimateInanimateObject: He is now a Book. ''The'' Book, but still a book.
* BadassBoast: "I'M ONE BADASS FREAKIN' OVERLORD!!!!"
* BadassCape: So badass it seems to contain a piece of space!
* BoisterousBruiser: In ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}'', he comes around looking for someone that can give him a good fight, and is quite a bit more friendly than in his own game.
** It's likely that his ''Disgaea 4'' appearance is set after the end of this game, which means it's more like CharacterDevelopment.
* BuffySpeak: "'Sacred Tome'? HA! More like... Sucky... Dumb... Thing."
* CharacterDevelopment: Grows from a selfish and idiotic VillainProtagonist to someone willing to forfeit his own life to save a loved one. Carried over in his cameo appearances in other games, where he is noticeably more affable.
* CharacterExaggeration: The Zetta Beam only appeared in a few cutscenes in ''Makai Kingdom'' — it was never usable for the player, even with his original body. It has since become his signature move in all of his [[TheCameo cameo]] appearances in other Nippon Ichi titles. Additionally, the Zetta Beam also becomes more destructive — originally it was just a blast from the eyes, but when it next appears in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 2|Cursed Memories}}'' it becomes a full-blown WaveMotionGun, and recently in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}'' it became a planet buster KamehameHadoken. In ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 5|AllianceOfVengeance}}'', it quite casually destroys orbiting astral bodies, and is even the basis for multiple combination attacks he can do with Pram and Petta.
* CosmicKeystone: The premise of the game is that Zetta torches the previous one, forcing him to take over its role to keep everything afloat. He fails beautifully.
* DemotedToExtra: Although Zetta appears in other Nippon Ichi titles as an OptionalBoss and OptionalPartyMember, he always appears in his book form and not in his original body. [[spoiler:This is finally averted in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}'' and ''VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2''.]]
* DotingParent: Is very protective and supportive of [[spoiler:Petta]] in other games, something which [[{{Tsundere}} he is very bad at hiding]].
* EvilLaugh: Cranks these out a lot. In later games, it precedes one of his special attacks.
* EyeBeam: '''[[CallingYourAttacks ZETTA BEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAM]]'''!!!!!!!
* FlamingHair: An odd example in that his hair is shaped roughly like a normal mane of long hair, except that bits of it flicker and float off like a crackling fire.
* {{Flanderization}}: Notable as one of the few NIS characters to actually subvert this trope in his later appearances when he has his body back.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:He takes his defeat at the hands of [[VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten Valvatorez]] rather well, mostly because he now has a rival that can keep up with him.]]
* HotBlooded: Zetta is a "crush enemies now, think about it later"-sort of guy. Which makes him easy for someone like Pram to manipulate.
* IHaveNoDaughter: His initial reaction to meeting Petta. It takes him some time before he comes around to the idea that he ''has'' a daughter.
* LargeHam: Of the shamelessly egomaniacal variety.
* MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds: Zetta destroys his own Netherworld by acting on the astoundingly-stupid idea to torch the local CosmicKeystone. Granted, he didn't think it would destroy his Netherworld (in fact he was trying to avert that) and he was tricked into it by an equally-unassuming Pram. The whole thing's PlayedForLaughs.
* MilkyWhiteEyes: In both human and book form.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: In the PSP Petta storyline, [[spoiler:he stops Petta from killing Alex...because he wants to fight Alex himself]].
* OnlySaneMan: Only when he's interacting with the wackier Overlords. Otherwise, he's plenty quirky himself.
* PowerGlows: In his human form (and how!). His hair flows like flame, and his every footstep sends electric crackles up his legs. He can also spark off a pretty impressive glow as a book too.
* PurposelyOverpowered: Pretty much every appearance he makes as a playable character, including (of course) in his ATasteOfPower appearance in ''Makai Kingdom'''s prologue. Simply put, all his stats, aptitudes, and growth skills puts every single character to shame, giving credit to his boasts of him being the strongest Overlord in the cosmos.
* RedBaron: The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos!
* RedOniBlueOni:
** The hot-blooded, impulsive Red to Pram's calm, manipulative Blue...
** ...Unless he's around Alex, in which Zetta is the more-cynical Blue to his UnknownRival Alex's Red.
* RipVanWinkle: In the PSP Petta storyline, [[ForWantOfANail his failed attempt to confine himself to the Sacred Tome]] causes him to get knocked out for a thousand years.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Zetta or Zeta.
* StatsDissonance: Enforced and PlayedForLaughs: As the Sacred Tome, Zetta keeps the amazingly-high stats his human form had in the prologue. He offers no power-benefit whatsoever when lifted as an item in-game. No [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomping Level 1 enemies with a cosmically-endowed paperweight for you!]]
* ATasteOfPower: At the start of the game, he's level 2000 and has a small collection of sword and dagger techs. After that, though....
* ThrowTheBookAtThem: He's...not really a good weapon, actually.
* TookALevelInKindness: Takes one throughout the game, and while his cameos in later games seem to undo this, all of his cameos in his ''human'' form seem to consistently play him as a lot more affable.
* {{Tsundere}}: [[VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten Fuka]] declares him the universe's biggest {{tsundere}} after seeing his interaction with [[spoiler:Petta, his KidFromTheFuture]].
** He's a huge one for Salome as well.
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist: Zetta effectively uproots his entire legacy within five minutes of the game and has to claw his way back to relevancy the hard way. He's also a {{Jerkass}} CardCarryingVillain that massacres entire realms to take them over and his unwillingness to acknowledge other people screws him over constantly.
* WeCannotGoOnWithoutYou: If he dies, the Dimension goes kablooie.
* WorthyOpponent:
** It's suggested that underneath the insults, he considers Alex to be this.
** [[spoiler:Thinks of Valvatorez as such after their battle in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}''.]]

[[folder:Pram]]
!!Pram
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KaoriMizuhashi (JP), Creator/AmandaWinnLee, Creator/ErinFitzgerald (''{{Franchise/Disgaea}}'' series) (EN)
[[quoteright:272:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Pram_little_9070.png]]
Pram is the snarky Oracle who predicted the death of the Netherworld. She spends most of her time alternating between trying to help Zetta get his body back and mocking him for his stupidity (sometimes these two overlap).
----
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: Subverted in that she's quite sane, but the sclera of her eyes is black.
* BlueOni: To Zetta's red. Also an inspiration for her character design, with cat ears placed like double horns and a slightly bluish tint to her white hair. However, that's only on the surface. Pram is actually one of the more short-tempered characters if insulted.
* CatGirl: It's not obvious in her standard portrait, but those are cat ears on her head. Her [[http://disgaea.wikia.com/wiki/File:DD2_Pram_Sprite2.png true form]], shown at the end of the game, makes it more explicit, giving her Nekomata-like claws and a tail.
* ChainedByFashion: Wears manacles on her wrists for no good reason.
* TheChessmaster: It's pretty clear from the beginning that's she manipulating Zetta to some end (and reveling in it as the narrator). Carries over when she appears in other games. Anyone with potential is seen as a new "toy" for her to play with.
** SmugSnake: [[spoiler:The only reason why she can predict the future is that she read ahead in the Sacred Tome. Without it, she's just a regular Overlord.]]
* ChildProdigy: Her actual age is undetermined, but she functions as this in the story -- an Overlord of unusual power despite her youth and an equal desire to prove her strength in the eyes of the older generation. Her young age is probably the source of her easily bruised pride.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Pram may be an OracularUrchin that [[spoiler: hijacks the prophecies of a CosmicKeystone ForTheEvulz]], but she draws the line at [[spoiler: separating Zetta from Salome once she realizes he still cares about her and assists in bringing her BackFromTheDead in the Good Ending]].
** In the Bad Ending, she [[spoiler: misinterprets Zetta and Salome's dynamic and assumes Zetta was abusively leeching off her power]], causing her to attack him in an offended rage.
* HiddenBuxom: She's noticeably curvier in her claws-out battle form, and the ''VideoGame/DisgaeaRPG'' gave her a ''significant'' FanservicePack. [[https://disgaea.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Disgaea_RPG_characters?file=DRPG_Pram_Artwork_2.png Behold,]] and [[https://disgaea.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Disgaea_RPG_characters?file=DRPG_Pram_Artwork_3.png compare]].
* AnIcePerson: Mostly in her later cameos. She can learn any of the elements in this game.
* ImprobableAge: In the Good Ending, Pram says she took the Netherworld from her father when she was just ''two''.
* KillItWithFire: When she appears in the game, it's by an explosion that spawns smaller explosions.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: During the good ending, [[spoiler: after realizing that Zetta still harbors feelings for Salome, she blames herself for starting the whole mess through rewriting the Sacred Tome]].
* OneWingedAngel: Grows out her wings and surrounds herself with a pyramid-shaped aura when serious.
* OracularUrchin: Pram is able to read the future and has no issues using that knowledge for nefarious purposes. [[spoiler: Until Trenia gives her a deep talking-to, upon which she has a HeelRealization]].
* PrescienceIsPredictable: Of course, she also cheated with some of her prophecies, but still.
* SquishyWizard: In gameplay. Very nice INT growth, but otherwise one of the weakest Overlords stat-wise.
* TimeAbyss: While the youngest of the overlords, in one of the bad endings, [[spoiler:Pram kills Zetta and rules the cosmos for tens of ''billions'' of years, with no end in sight]].
* TokenMiniMoe: Among the Overlords. As a result of this, she also gets quite a lot of face time in the official art books.
* UnexplainedRecovery: Toward the end of the game, [[spoiler: during her attempt to revive Salome, Seedle]] delivers a seemingly fatal blow to her, halting her efforts. By TheStinger, however, she's back on her feet.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Talking to the characters in the Overlord's Castle near the end of the game reveals that Pram can do this, but she's only done it once in her whole life. [[spoiler:It's somewhat implied she's trying to hide her more catlike features.]]
* [[WhatTheHellHero What the Hell, Overlord?]]: In the game's Bad Ending, she misinterprets Zetta's situation with Salome as [[spoiler:mooching off of her power knowingly, flaunting it as his own]]. She takes up arms against him immediately, and tries to kill him.

[[folder:Salome]]
!!Salome
!!! Voiced by: Creator/AiOrikasa (JP), Creator/MaryElizabethMcGlynn (EN)
[[quoteright:213:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Salome_little_4158.png]]
A former human who chose to become a demon rather than be reborn into the human world, Salome was once a pupil of Zetta's. However, she doesn't have as much power as most typical Overlords.
----
* AntiGravityClothing: No idea what holds up that thing behind her. She doesn't touch the ground, for that matter either.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler: Zetta is forced to kill her in an elaborate SuicideByCop scheme. Thankfully, he's able to use the Sacred Tome to bring her back.]]
* BloodFromTheMouth: Salome [[IncurableCoughOfDeath coughs up blood a few times during the story]], hinting at her ailment.
* DelayedReaction: When she meets Petta in the UpdatedRerelease, and after Petta states that she's Zetta's daughter, there is a [[DramaticPause very long pause]] where Trenia walks by before Salome responds by asking Petta to...
** RepeatWhatYouJustSaid: Petta does, leading to a shorter DelayedReaction before Salome screams "ZETTA'S DAUGHTERRRRRRRR!!?" and...
*** {{Fainting}}: ...passes out. [[spoiler:Mostly because she doesn't seem to realize that Petta's both a KidFromTheFuture and ''her daughter too.'']]
* FeatherMotif: When she first appears, she does so in a soft explosion of white feathers.
* FinalBoss: Salome is this to the main campaign, due to [[spoiler: her [[ObfuscatingStupidity feigning insanity]] so Zetta can aid her in committing SuicideByCop]].
* GuestStarPartyMember: She's briefly an ally (not controllable, but non-hostile to you and hostile to your enemies) in the story mode when fighting Alexander, since the player isn't likely to be able to beat him on their own at that point.
* KnightOfCerebus: The only non-comedic character besides Seedle. When she's on-screen, the tone ranges from somber to creepy.
* TheHighQueen: [[spoiler:Before her love for Zetta pushes her to the edge.]]
* HotConsort: [[spoiler:Zetta admits he loves her in the end and in the credits she is seen wearing what looks like a wedding dress, strongly suggesting they did finally get married. Salome at (long) last became Zetta's ''ridiculously'' hot wife.]]
* HotForTeacher: It's heavily implied during the first chapters that she used to have a crush on Zetta while serving under him, an implication that lasts right up until the point she states it outright. Zetta seems [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial a little too eager to deny he ever felt anything for her]].
* InformedFlaw: [[spoiler:Is said to be getting weaker by the time she's appeared due to giving her mana to Zetta, but when fought as an OptionalBoss, she's the same as when she's a GuestStarPartyMember.]]
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Starts leaking power, most often represented by this during cutscenes.
* LadyOfWar: An elegant and powerful fighter with the best Attack bonus (170%) in the game.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: Declares that her and Zetta are destined to die together. [[spoiler:This is intended to get him to kill her, take the rest of her power, and end her suffering, since she can't stop the transfer of mana now that she knows what it's doing to her. Thus, this is a SubvertedTrope.]]
* LoveMartyr: [[spoiler:Despite "leaving" Zetta when he neglected her for the sake of power, she gives her power to him to help him achieve his dream. This is killing her, and she wants Zetta to put an end to it.]]
* MagicKnight: She has the stats for it if you want to do this.
* ManaDrain: Narrative example. Salome's illness is the result of her mana slowly deteriorating. [[spoiler: It's secretly going into Zetta; something he's in the dark about]].
* MsFanservice: The only woman in the game who isn't a child or a talking head, and she's a voluptuous blonde.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Her dress is open in front down to her pelvis.
* ObfuscatingInsanity: See LoveMakesYouCrazy for the full story.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:Her illness and giving Zetta her mana power makes her much weaker when she's fought at the end of the game, though she's hardly a pushover.]]

!!Babylon
!!! Voiced by: Creator/TakeshiAono (JP) Creator/AlanShearman (EN)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Babaylon_little_9012.png]]
The Dragon God Babylon is the largest and oldest of all of the Overlords in the Netherworld. His old age has made him senile, and he has a tendency to fall asleep in the middle of a conversation.
----
* AnIcePerson: Babylon's FinishingMove "Absolute Zero" is Ice-based.
* BishounenLine: Fights by turning into a human-sized entity, likely because his regular form is too big to fit on any of the game's maps.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy[=/=]RedEyesTakeWarning: In both of his forms, but especially noticeable in his human form.
* BroughtDownToBadass: The One's curse has caused Babylon to lose his infinite Mana power and to grow senile, but this doesn't stop Babylon at all from destroying planets. ''By accident.''
* DimensionLord: In his prime, Babylon ruled the entire universe. Too bad The One put an end to his reign.
* HadesShaded: In his human form, his skin color is gray.
* LargeAndInCharge: He's an Overlord, and he's so big that all we usually see of him is his head.
* LethalKlutz: Due to his poor eyesight, Babylon has the unfortunate habit of ''destroying planets by bumping into them.''
* MightyGlacier: As a unit, Babylon has high ATK, heavy weapon proficiencies and lackluster Movement range.
* MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds: He really doesn't ''mean'' to wantonly destroy planets, but, well, he's just so big and his eyes are going.
* TheOlderImmortal: Eldest among Overlords and one of the only people Zetta shows respect to.
* OneWingedAngel: In his OptionalBoss battle... [[spoiler:Though really you're fighting him in the past.]]
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Based on Chinese dragons and is MUCH bigger than the other dragons to appear in NIS games.
* RetiredBadass: Is the oldest of ''all'' Overlords, but has grown quite senile.
* SnotBubble: When he falls asleep, which occurs quite often.
* TimeAbyss: Babylon is the oldest Overlord, and considering Zetta and King Drake are tens of thousands of years old, that's saying something. When Zetta travels thousands of years into the past to battle him at his full power, he's ''still'' an old guy!
* TokenGoodTeammate: While 'good' [[PunchClockVillain barely applies to Overlords]], he's the only one besides Micky ([[spoiler: and Salome]]) that demonstrates any concern for others and is way more civil than the other cutthroats that make up the Overlords. His OptionalBoss fight has him chiding Zetta over his lack of concern for his own life.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alexander]]
!!Alexander (God of Destruction, Alejandro, Asshat)
!!! Voiced by: Creator/KenjiNojima (JP), Creator/YuriLowenthal (EN, ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2'')
[[quoteright:254:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Alex_little_7729.png]]
Alex is the God of Destruction, and has developed a fierce ongoing rivalry with Zetta. Most of the time, he's directly tried to kill Zetta himself, but other times, he's employed the help of the Thunder God Raiden to do his work for him.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: See the little child next to Alex in the game's credits? That's his little sister, who has no passing or mention in the actual game.
* AndThenWhat: In one of the bad endings, Alex [[spoiler:actually winds up destroying everything in his attempt to find an opponent as strong as Zetta. He didn't, and realized that in achieving victory over Zetta, he doomed himself to an empty and wasted life]].
* BigOlEyebrows: Keeping with his "thunder god" theme, he's got the big, comma-shaped eyebrows you'd expect from many depictions of Raiden, the Japanese god of thunder. (Ironically, Raiden himself does not.)
* BlankWhiteEyes: When shocked.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Alex is appalled once he learns [[spoiler: how deep Seedle's hatred for Salome runs and actively holds Seedle back single-handedly so Zetta can confront her]].
* FateWorseThanDeath: See AndThenWhat above.
* HotBlooded: Just as much as Zetta. It's also why Zetta trusts Alex when he says he doesn't know a thing about the Sacred Tome. Alex is too much of a straight-shooter to lie, even to his rival.
* JokeCharacter: Downplayed. Alex has impressive defenses and HP at the expense of sub-par attacking stats, which would make him an excellent StoneWall...in a game where defense mattered. Between the inability of characters to block enemy movement and the OneHitKO nature of the Post-Game, Alex is unable to do the thing he's built for and thus has to either fall back on a signature weapon his INT is too weak to wield (Drums), use a weapon only specific enemies are weak to (Fans) or use ATK-based weapons at the expense of his personal fighting style (Spears and Nunchakus); all while characters with better offensive power overshadow him.
* MasterOfNone: Alex joins the party as such. All of his offensive stats and Aptitudes are about as strong as those of third-tier PlayerMooks (INT is his worst attacking stat) and his Weapon Fortes (Spear, Drum, Nunchaku, Fan) are all over the place. His only saving grace is his high HP Aptitude, which gives him Tank potential. His build makes him mediocre in every way.
* MeaninglessVillainVictory: In one of the bad endings. [[spoiler:He kills Zetta and then realizes soon after just how hollow victory is without Zetta around to flaunt it to.]]
* TheRival: Alex works far more like a shonen hero's rival than an actual villain.
* StoneWall: Downplayed. Alex has amazing HP, DEF and RES Aptitudes as well as mediocre ATK, but it comes at the cost of very finicky Weapon Proficiencies and mediocre starting stats. He's clearly designed to soak up punishment rather than deal it and his FinishingMove "Vanishing Bolt" relies on his INT, the Aptitude of which is a static 100%.
* SuicidalCosmicTemperTantrum: He's got a bad habit of trying to annihilate everything when he doesn't get his way (hence earning the "God of Destruction" moniker).
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Alex makes it very clearly throughout the game that no one gets to kill Zetta but himself and will do anything to ensure that.
** In the main storyline, Alex gets upset over Zetta getting cursed by The One and resolves to kill Zetta and settle their rivalry before the curse can. Later, he fights Seedle twice to prevent him from killing Zetta and allow Zetta to resolve his issues with Salome so that they can get back to their rivalry.
** In the PSP Petta storyline, Zetta gets knocked unconscious for 1000 years [[spoiler: and Alex spends all that time protecting Zetta just so he can fight him himself]].
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: "Who's the Overlord now, bitch!?"
* ThisIsUnforgivable: [[spoiler:Once Seedle reveals his true colors, Alex abandons his rivalry with Zetta to knock Seedle off his throne.]]
* UnknownRival: Downplayed, since Zetta does acknowledge the fact that the two have battled time and time again. He just doesn't care about their rivalry as much as Alex does.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Bares his chest constantly, only ever covering up with a shawl.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Everything about him makes it seem like he thinks he's in a shonen fighting anime.

[[quoteright:346:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Seedle_little_5203.png]]
Seedle is the God of the Underworld. As Zetta himself puts it, "He was a kind, brave Samurai until he got lost in the Underworld, where he kicked enough ass to become head honcho."
----
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: According to Zetta, Seedle became ruler of the underworld by kicking enough ass.
* BigBad: [[spoiler:Probably the closest to one in the game. He has no real role in the plot, however, until he tries to kill Salome.]]
* BrutalHonesty: Unlike the other overlords, he doesn't even try to keep a veneer of civility or to to conceal that he's only around to laugh at Zetta's predicament. [[spoiler:And because he knows Salome will show up to help Zetta sooner or later.]]
* DualWielding: When one sword is just just not enough.
* EvilLaugh: A mocking chuckle.
* EvilSoundsDeep: In the English version. In the Japanese, he's a tenor that practically ''leers'' every word.
* EyepatchOfPower: Prominently displayed on his right eye.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Inverted. Seedle makes no secret of his animosity towards the others (particularly [[spoiler: Salome]]) and is surprised that they would even consider helping Zetta out. He only sticks around because [[ItAmusedMe he finds everybody's flailing funny.]]
* GlassCannon: Stat-wise, he's this - His HP is mediocre and his defenses are pitiful, but he has an impressive ATK Aptitude - two of his weapon-types and his FinishingMove rely on it.
* HellHasNewManagement: When he ended up in the Underworld, he kicked so much ass that he ended up becoming its Overlord.
* KnightOfCerebus: He doesn't have any of the comedic quirks the other characters have. When funny things happen, he's either completely absent or ignoring it.
* IWasBeatenByAGirl: When they were both still humans, [[spoiler:Salome kills him during his struggle to rape her]]. To say that he was pissed would be an understatement.
* ObviouslyEvil: While all the Overlords will talk about being evil, Seedle is the only one that actually looks the part. Not surprisingly, he's the only truly evil character in the game.
* PlotIrrelevantVillain: Despite being the most malicious character in the game, he had nothing to do with Zetta losing his body or [[YourDaysAreNumbered receiving the One’s curse]]. Aside from making snide remarks as events unfold, his only role in the plot is [[spoiler:[[{{Revenge}} using this incident as an opportunity to kill Salome.]]]] To drive the point home, not only is he [[spoiler: KilledOffscreen, he’s [[OptionalBoss never fought during the main game]]]].
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: [[spoiler:Tried to rape Salome back in their human days. She killed him and got burned at the stake for slaying a hero. [[RevengeMyopia That didn't please him, however, and he is looking to make Salome pay.]]]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Lots of demons have red eyes, but with Seedle, they can be taken as an actual warning.
* {{Revenge}}: [[spoiler:His motivation for helping Zetta — it will draw out Salome and give him a chance for payback.]]
* {{Samurai}}: Of the "masterless ronin" variety.
* ScarsAreForever: Seedle appears to have a scar across his chest; he may have had it since his death because [[spoiler:he was stabbed by Salome]].
* TheUnderworld: He is the realm's Overlord.
* TheUnfought: In the main game, he is never fought [[spoiler:despite being the game's BigBad, as both of his attempts to kill Zetta are thwarted by Alex. His only real fight with Zetta is as an OptionalBoss, and it takes place before Salome gets involved with the plot]].
* TokenEvilTeammate: Even compared to [[TheStarscream King Drake the Third]], Seedle is an absolute sleaze. He's a depressing, sour man that constantly mocks everyone at every opportunity and treats everyone else like inevitable casualties. He's also [[spoiler: Salome's rapist who spends the last episode trying to kill her ''a second time,'' even interfering in Pram's revival attempt, out of sheer spite]].
* WalkingShirtlessScene: His torn robes are always draped down his arm, showing off battle scars.

[[folder:Valvoga]]
!!Valvoga (Micky, Ophelia, and Dryzen)
!!! Micky voiced by: Creator/TesshoGenda (JP), Creator/DerekStephenPrince (EN); Ophelia voiced by: Creator/MikiNarahashi (JP), Creator/WendeeLee (EN); Dryzen voiced by: Creator/TakashiNagasako (JP), Creator/BobPapenbrook (EN)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Valvolga_little_3769.png]]
The Star Overlord Valvoga is often summoned into Netherworlds to fight would-be heroes as a "final boss". Valvolga consists of three independently-speaking parts: Micky, the head and torso; Ophelia, the upper body; and Dryzen, the lower body. Micky is supposed to be the brains of the group, but is often bullied into doing what Ophelia and Dryzen want because he's too timid.
----
* AerithAndBob: Even amongst Valvoga, Micky's name is really silly when compared to Ophelia and Dryzen.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Micky. His frightened animation is similar to a girl being afraid of a mouse and his English voice is given a stereotypical gay lisp.
* AxCrazy: Dryzen.
* BishonenLine: [[spoiler:After his post-game battle, Micky takes over as the one being Valvoga and becomes a smaller and more defined version of himself, although Ophelia and Dryzen still exists in his mind.]]
* BoisterousBruiser: Dryzen.
-->BABES! MONEY! ALCOHOL! GWAHAHAHAHAHA!
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler:Supposedly, Ophelia is ''The One''; a Neutral being who makes sure the BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil is maintained. The whole reveal is treated like a joke, however.]]
* HeroKiller: Despite being one of the nicest characters in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'' and probably the nicest Overlord of TheMultiverse, in ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject'', Valvoga is noted as such; the entire hero corporation was created to defeat him in the first place.
* MagicKnight: One Overlord with the stats for it. Unlike fellow MagicKnight Salome though, his weapon-types are more isolated and build-oriented.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: Micky is possibly the nicest Overlord around. Pity his other halves bully him around...
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: Micky has four muscular arms, which makes it all the funnier when he makes a cringing gesture with them.
* NiceGuy: Despite being the main body of a PhysicalGod Ultimate Overlord, Micky is easily one of the nicest and most sane characters in the game. Too bad he's so spineless.
* NoIndoorVoice: Dryzen.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Later games of the NIS [[TheMultiverse multiverse]] states that Valvoga was the one who killed Overlord Baal for good, the supposedly unkillable overlord. How this impossible feat happened is left up to our imagination. [[spoiler:Though, ''Disgaea 4'' contradicts this by having Baal appear anyway, albeit as free DLC.]]
* OneWingedAngel: Valvolga's design is intended to be evocative of the final forms many final bosses transform into most [=RPGs=]. Ironically, his own final form hits the BishonenLine, becoming much smaller and humanoid than the evil god form he normally appears as.
* OptionalBoss: If Zetta musters up the {{mana}}, he can wish to fight Valvoga. Valvoga is also the OptionalBoss for ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject''.
* PhysicalGod: It seems he got promoted after Baal's defeat; Valvoga dropped the ''Dark Lord'' rank from ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'' and became ''Demon God'' in ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject''.
* PunchClockVillain: His description implies that he's this, since it says he's a popular 'final boss' despite actually being a pretty nice guy.
* SissyVillain: Downplayed with Micky. Micky is conflict-averse and InTouchWithHisFeminineSide; only a "villain" by proxy of being an Overlord and having a side-gig as various games' FinalBoss. Ophelia and Dryzen both bully him for their less-moral gains and Zetta's opinion of him is bupkis. He gains [[spoiler: [[TookALevelInBadass the ability to assert himself if you beat him in the Post-Game]]]], gifting you his Phantom Double as thanks.
* SplitPersonality: Although all three halves are presented as independent beings, and [[spoiler:Ophelia supposedly being ''the one'']] might avert this; Micky finally voicing his opinion in his OptionalBoss fight implies this trope, stating that ''he'' is Valvoga and the other two should do as he say; also, [[spoiler:Valvoga's true form only resembles Micky; no traits from Ophelia and Dryzen are seen]].
* TokenGoodTeammate: Just like Babylon, Micky has next to no bad bone in his body ([[ItMakesSenseInContext Bad limbs are another matter.]]) and is only with the other Overlords out of association. Micky is so kind in fact that Zetta actively looks down on him for it. It's his fellow components Dryzen and Ophelia that make up his more demonic tendencies.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Dryzen.
-->DRYZEN PICKS ON MICKEY! GWAHAHAHAHAHA!

[[folder:King Drake III]]
!!King Drake III
!!!Voiced by: Creator/NorioWakamoto (JP), Creator/JamiesonPrice (EN)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Drake_little_2783.png]]
King Drake III is, uh...a "special" kind of Overlord. Most of the other Overlords don't think too highly of him, because he does a lot more talking and scheming than he's actually capable of.
----
* BeastMan: A lion man.
* BoisterousBruiser: Talks the talk. Completely fails at walking the walk.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: His eyes are similar to Pram's. Unlike Pram, he is a bit crazy.
* ButtMonkey: Not a single person takes him seriously and every single scheme he comes up with ends in failure. The only thing anyone is remotely interested in is his rather silly "true form".
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: One of the only Overlords that actively partakes in this during the game. He enacts various schemes to wrestle power from the others and always fails.
* DirtyCoward: Tries to sneak a wish into the tome while Zetta's asleep to win control of the Netherworlds, and then runs away crying when he's caught and called out as a coward for it.
* HarmlessVillain: No one takes him seriously because of this, despite most of the rest of the Overlords being mostly harmless {{Noble Demon}}s themselves. He's a very unsuccessful schemer and very weak in a fight. The most he can do is attempt to talk a big game and run home crying when his plans crumble.
* IncomingHam: His entrance, which involves a boisterous speech, plenty of flexing, and explosions.
-->"You have all waited so patiently, and now I have finally arrived! I'm the king of the universe, the galactic hero, the creator of all things decently sized. Say my name if you know it! I am... ''(StuffBlowingUp in the background)'' KING DRAKE THE THIRD!"
* JokeCharacter:
** Drake has the best HP Aptitude of anything in the game and comes with some respectable Passives, but he's mediocre is every other area and two of his patron Weapons ([[HealingShiv Pies]]) and ([[RingOut Balloons]]) are of the "gimmicky, borderline-useless" variety. There's also better Hammer and Shovel-users out there. He'd make [[StoneWall a great meat shield]] if this was a game in which defensive units could block the passage of enemies, but alas, this isn't one.
** He also has a 10% intelligence affinity. '''10%'''. Most first-tier fighter characters have at least 70%. He is possibly the dumbest character in the Nippon Ichi-verse.
* LargeHam: Voiced by Creator/NorioWakamoto, so of course.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Nothing like this is ever explicitly stated, but there's three important pieces of information:
** First, in Chapter 8, Drake gives this retort to Pram.
-->'''Drake''': Look, if you hadn't [[spoiler:taken my netherworld]], none of this would have happened. Get it?
** Second is this line from the Good Ending.
-->'''Pram''': [[spoiler:I took the Netherworld from my father when I was only two!]]
** And finally, [[spoiler:Pram is a CatGirl and it's implied she's hiding her more feline features. The evidence all points to Drake being Pram's father, a relationship neither of them seem willing to acknowledge. If this still doesn't convince you, [[BlackEyesOfCrazy just look at their eyes]]. [[FamilyEyeResemblance They have the exact same eyes.]]]]
* MistakenForGay: When he confesses to trying to steal Zetta's "junk," Zetta calls him a sick bastard.
* OneWingedAngel: Parodied. He attempts to unleash his true form, only for Zetta to see an image of an old man riding a scooter (see ShoutOut below). When he tries again and gathers power, Zetta is far more interested in that picture than King Drake's power.
* RequisiteRoyalRegalia: Both crown and ermine cape.
** Nice Crown
** PimpedOutCape: Traditional red with fur trim.
* ShoutOut[=/=]ActorAllusion: His 'true form' (which he quickly abandons in embarrassment) is drawn in the style of ''Manga/SazaeSan''. Creator/NorioWakamoto is a frequently used contributor to the anime.
* SmallNameBigEgo: While having a big ego is practically a requirement for most Overlords, he's so ineffectual at being one despite the big game he talks.
* SmugSnake: Downplayed, but present. He's a bit too boisterous to be openly smug and disdainful, but he clearly thinks he's smarter relative to the rest of the cast than he actually is, and he's a schemer (albeit with an unjustified confidence in his ability to pull it off).
* StoneWall: Just like Alex, Drake's high-HP, blah-attack stat spread nudges toward tanking damage. Or they would in a game where tanking was possible. Here, Drake's little more than a walking paperweight.
* TeamRocketWins: Subverted. Upon Zetta [[spoiler: seemingly killing The One and being cursed for it, Drake picks up the corpse and tries to blackmail Zetta into relinquishing his Netherworlds in exchange for removing the curse. The other Overlords are actually somewhat fearful]] until Salome arrives and calls the bluff, forcing a prompt retreat.

[[quoteright:269:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Trenia_little_7411.png]]
Trenia is a mysterious girl who appeared when Zetta's soul was bound to the Sacred Tome. She appears to be goofy and aloof most of the time, giving cryptic warnings to the other Overlords one minute, and casually strolling along and chasing after butterflies the next.
----
* CloudCuckoolander: She is utterly unfazed by everything that goes on around her (including death threats) and will happily chase butterflies in the cosmic void at the drop of a hat.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: A cool aqua blue pair of eyes to match her long hair.
* TheDitz: [[spoiler:Subverted. She knows exactly what's going on, she just acts clueless.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: At the start of Chapter 6, Trenia is growing ''something'' in a cosmic garden plot. The following chapter is about Zetta massacring vegetables, most notably [[spoiler: a Corn Man claiming to be "The One." As in, the '''arbiter of the universe.''']]
* GodWasMyCoPilot: Subtly influences the events of the story; most notably [[spoiler: the myth of "The One]]."
* MoralityChain: Discussed. One of the very first things Zetta does is declare this random girl he knows nothing about off-limits to the other Overlords. Even ''he'' isn't sure why he's doing this.
* MysteriousWaif: Pram spends much of the game puzzling over just who she is, and the answer is integral to the plot.
* MythologyGag: Her bright costume colors reference ''VideoGame/PhantomBrave''. [[spoiler:Also, her calling out "Confine" when she returns to The Sacred Tome.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Considering she [[spoiler:spent most of her life as a book]], she would much rather chase butterflies than answer any questions posed to her with any meaningful answers.
* TheOmniscient: [[spoiler:She's the physical embodiment of the Sacred Tome and is aware of the past, present, and future — so much so that Pram used to sneak a peak when she needed a good prophecy.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: Trenia spends much of the story causing a variety of MeaningfulBackgroundEvent[=s=]: Most notably, she's the one that [[spoiler: gave Alex a chance to prematurely conquer one of the barren Netherworlds meant for Zetta in defiance of Pram's future-telling]] and she [[spoiler: could've helped Zetta at any point, but played dumb just so she could see what could happen]] (and enjoy her newfound freedom for awhile). A CutawayGag near at the start of Chapter 6 even implies that [[spoiler: she personally grew "The One" that Zetta kills at the end of the following Chapter to deliberately invoke a PlotTriggeringDeath...and that assumes she's not the reason the legend of "The One" exists at all]].
* TheUnfought: Trenia can never be recruited as a unit or [[spoiler: fought as a boss]].. She ''does'' however serve as a cameo to explain why [[spoiler: Baal]] is around.
* WingedHumanoid: She has little blue demon wings, which is odd considering everyone thinks of her as just a normal girl.

[[folder:Petta]]
!!Petta (The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos' Daughter)
!!!Voiced by: Creator/{{Kaori Mizuhashi}} (JP), Creator/ErinFitzgerald (EN)
[[quoteright:134:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Alpha_little_1859.png]]
A new character starring in the [[AnotherSideAnotherStory extra scenario]] called “Papa is the Strongest Overlord” in the port of ''Makai Kingdom'' for the PSP. Petta also went HD in the 6th {{DLC}} pack for ''VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten''.
----
* AuthorityEqualsAssKicking: It's on ''[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin her rank]]'', it reads as ''Uchu Saikyo no Mao no Musume'', which can adapted[[note]]this because Zetta's title in Japan is slightly different than the English version (The Strongest Devil King in all Cosmos)[[/note]] in English as ''The Most Badass Frickin Overlord in All The Cosmos' Daughter''.
* BadassAdorable: She may look harmless, but she can wreck overlords with ease.
* BadassCape: A tiny one. You wouldn't be blamed for thinking it was just part of her dress.
* BlushSticker: On her second piece of artwork.
* CombinationAttack: Exa Beam, with her father in ''Disgaea 5''.
* CoolCrown: Hiding up in her hair, peeking out.
* CuteLittleFangs: Barely noticeable except when she gets a closeup.
* DaddysGirl: She adores her father and wants to make him proud.
* TheDragon: To [[spoiler: Alex]] in her own story.
* EyeBeams: '''PETTA BEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAM'''!!!!!!!
* FlamingHair: It practically moves on its own, just like Zetta's.
* GirlishPigtails: Has her constantly-waving hair done up in two massive pigtails.
* TheGunslinger: In every game she's in, Petta is a long-range support-sniper that prefers Guns and Bows.
* KidFromTheFuture: She claims to be Zetta's daughter from the future, [[spoiler:which is confirmed in her mode. She has gone back in time to prevent the prophecy of Zetta destroying his own Netherworld and himself, as it would erase her own existence. Also, Salome is implied to be her mom.]]
** She also appears in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2'' and ''VideoGame/Disgaea5AllianceOfVengeance''.
* MilkyWhiteEyes: Her eyes have almost no color to them, but it's there if you squint.
* MiniDressOfPower: A fairly fancy one at that, with lace and ruffles.
* NiceGirl: She's clearly not acquired Zetta's arrogance and pride, instead being very polite and kindhearted.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: She is only about 110 cm. Her powers, on the other hand...
* RetGone: She's trying to avoid this.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Much like Zetta, there are ''Peta'' and ''Petta'' to be found around.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She's essentially a mini, gender-swapped Zetta.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics: Assuming she's Zetta's daughter ([[spoiler:which she is]]), she's inherited her father's EyeBeams and [[spoiler:her mother's Black Prison]] in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}''.
* ThemeNaming: "Peta" and "Zetta" are prefixes to units of measurement. 1000 to the 5th or 7th power, respectively.
* TimeTravel: See KidFromTheFuture. In the PSP game, she calls this ability "Time Slip". In ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}'', one of her skills actually has her hit the enemy, then travel back in time one second and hit the enemy again.
** TimeParadox: Then she travels back in time another second and hits the enemy again, and then all three Pettas blast the enemy with their EyeBeams before merging together.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Spoiler Character]]

The One is the universe's cosmic arbiter of order and the reason why Bad Endings aren't a thing. Maybe. Jury's still out on that. Whatever he is, only a certain senile Overlord has survived his curse.

* AmbiguousSituation: The game leaves it open whether "The One" actually exists or if he's merely a cosmic boogeyman keeping ambitious Overlords in-line. There's evidence for both theories and whatever the answer is, ''Makai Kingdom'' isn't telling.
* FramingDevice: Babylon spends two entire Chapters panicking his face off to make clear how [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs terrifying, important and terrifyingly important]] "The One" is to the story of the game.
* GodOfOrder: If the rumors are true, The One oversees the Universe's cosmic disputes and keeps the order.
* KnightOfCerebus: Downplayed or Parodied, depending on how the game feels at certain points. The One's addition to the plot changes the tone of the game from light-hearted self-deprecative fun to a tense conspiracy...Not that it stops the game from making jokes, still.
* MediumAwareness: According to legends, The One is the reason why most of Nippon Ichi's "Bad Endings" are non-canon.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: The death of "The One" (or at least the Corn Man claiming to ''be'' him) kick-starts the second-half of the game and forces everyone's agendas out into the open.
* PresentAbsence: PlayedWith. During Chapters 6 and 7, Babylon is fearful for the arrival of "The One," a cosmic judge that cursed him into draining his own Mana just to survive. Mentioning him sparks paranoia from ''all'' of the Overlords other than Zetta and Salome, and even she comes around eventually. The entire tail-end of the game happens because Zetta supposedly kills him and gets hit with the same curse; forcing Alex, Seedle and Salome into action. But, there's evidence that the corn ''was not'' "The One" at all, if they were even around - It was the ''idea'' that they may exist that forced everyone's hand, not the individual themselves...[[AmbiguousSituation right?]]
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Deconstructed. "The One" is a seemingly-minor character nobody brings up until mid-way into the game, yet the mere mention of them kicks off numerous DisasterDominoes that culminate in the game's final act...Until TheStinger reveals that the curse so integral to The One (at least the one placed on Zetta) was a RedHerring that forced him into CharacterDevelopment and probably didn't exist at all; putting the very legitimacy of "The One" as a character into question. For all the talk surrounding this GodOfOrder, they didn't actually effect a whole hell of a lot. Or did they?
* TheUnreveal: "The One" is supposedly a Corn Man that Zetta destroys. But TheStinger implies it's Ophelia instead. The game leaves it open as a gag.
* TraumaButton: For Babylon, being the reason he's a shell of his former self. Just hearing about him turns the polite elder dragon into a quivering mess.
* WalkingSpoiler: Talking about "The One" means discussing the second-half of the entire game.
