-> ''"Nanoha told me: 'He's my magic teacher who is also the legendary Chief Librarian who manages to organize and maintain the Infinite Library. My most admirable friend. Moreover, long a ago a very cute ferret...'"'' [...] "''Weren't you a ferret that evolved into a real human?''"\
-- '''Chrono''', ''Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st Sound Stage'' Side F, Track 4: "Claudia - Yuuno and Chrono"

Though the viewer gets to see him introduced first as a human mage, he's been badly injured and [[VoluntaryShapeshifting assumes the form of a ferret]] to better heal and recover. This is how Nanoha finds him, and he doesn't end up revealing his human form to her until halfway into the first season (not that he meant to keep it secret, it simply slipped his mind that he hadn't actually told her). In any case, Yuuno is looking for [[GottaCatchThemAll twenty one]] [[LostTechnology Jewel Seeds]]. Being unable and unsuited to use [[MagicWand the Intelligent Device, Raising Heart]], he gave it to Nanoha, with whom it is remarkably compatible. Yuuno assists Nanoha in most of her adventures during Season One, acting as a cross between a [[{{Mentors}} mentor]] and TheLancer (of the rare gentle-and-sweet variety).

The second season sees Yuuno having less action time, and more relegated to the backseat. However, his presence is still crucial as he helps in the battles against the Wolkenritter and the season's BigBad. His research in the Infinite Library also provides crucial information about both.

The third season has him effectively PutOnABus -- he only appears in three cameos in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', and at least once in ''[=ViVid=]'' so far... ''[[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome and not at all in Force]]''. He has settled down as the Chief Librarian of the Infinite Library, in the same organization as his friends.
----
* AccidentalPervert: Before Nanoha knew that he actually has VoluntaryShapeshifting, she undressed in front of him. It didn't help that he ''believed'' that Nanoha met him in his original form.
* AdaptationSpeciesChange: In ''INNOCENT'', his true form is that of Nanoha's pet ferret, with his human form acting as his Brave Duel avatar.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: In the earlier seasons. He later becomes a {{Bishounen}}.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: Established in his backstory. Given all of the skills Yuuno possesses, as well as how dangerous Lost Logia artifacts can be, and how there are sometimes very dangerous people who want to steal them, one can infer that this is a particularly hazardous occupation.
* AloneInACrowd: In the first season, Yuuno talks about how he grew up without parents, [[RaisedByTheCommunity being raising communally by his clan]]. In the drama [=CDs=], he mentions the Scrya family tent, which was often full of a lively, bustling crowd of people, and how comforting he finds such an atmosphere. He tells Nanoha that he's always been alone in the crowd, [[AngstWhatAngst but he appreciates what they did for him, and he's happy to bear the name "Scrya".]]
* BadassAdorable: Cute little ferret adroitly defends a cute little girl from a wolf. Later fights a hammer-girl knight as an AdorablyPrecociousChild.
* BadassBookworm: Further reinforced when he became a librarian.
* BadassTeacher: For Nanoha.
* BarrierWarrior: In ''Gears of Destiny'', one of his long range attacks is Barrier Smash, where he dashes straight at his opponent in a flying tackle while protected by a barrier. He also possesses two "field-type" spells, which create [[InstantRunes magical circles]] that trap opponents caught within their boundaries; one field works as his grab move, and he causes it to explode underneath them. The other field is his counterattack, and seems to electrify the opponent before exploding and sending them flying back. Using fields, he can also obscure fights from observation by normal people, or even trap magical opponents, forcing them to fight when they would otherwise flee.
* BerserkButton: Don't call him a familiar or make fun of his ferret transformation.
* BoyOfMyDreams: Nanoha dreams of Yuuno via telepathy in the very first episode.
* ButtMonkey: Most of the series' humor was originally lighthearted abuse of him: Making him an AccidentalPervert with Nanoha, Chrono making fun of his ferret form etc. As he lost significance, this dropped off. Of course, in ''A's'', we get Nanoha biting him in her sleep...
** This unfortunately kept up in the [[AbridgedSeries manga omakes]], wherein Yuuno is nothing more than "That ferret guy". All the humor involving him either makes fun of him being a ferret or his [[DidNotGetTheGirl (failed) relationship with Nanoha]].
** During ''Gears of Destiny'' the few (optional) fights that Yuuno gets tend to be between people how have heard about [[MistakenForBadass him training Nanoha]] and [[BloodKnight wish to do battle]] with the man who trained the "Ace of Aces."
** Finally taken to its logical conclusion during the LighterAndSofter INNOCENT wherein Yunno doesn't even get the dignity of being a human boy and is instead reduced to being Nanoha's (sometimes talking) pet ferret. Poor guy just can't catch a break.
* CantCatchUp: Realizes that Nanoha is considerably better at offensive magic than he is. In the Megami sound stage for ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', he says he realizes he'll never be as good at combat as Nanoha, which is part of the reason for deciding to support her by doing research. Of course, he's also the only mage in the ''entire extended series'' without even the most basic Device, and he still manages feats of power equaling those of the other mages. [[WildMassGuessing Now]], [[AvertedTrope maybe if he got one of his]] ''[[AvertedTrope own]]''...?
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Despite the time that Vivio spends in the Infinite Library in ''Sound Stage X'', Yuuno makes no appearance and no mention is made of him. Likewise, after the second season, no one thinks to ask him about all of the ancient history, cultures, figures of interest, or pieces of forbidden technology that continue to plague and perplex people in the modern day, despite Yuuno being the most qualified man alive to come up with the answers.
* CovertPervert: In the first season, he licks on Nanoha's face to comfort her when he's in his ferret form. It's not unusual for animals to do that, but he's ''not'' an actual ferret, which left that behavior ambiguous. And he did never remind Nanoha that he's a human boy when she's undressing or taking him into an [[HotSpringsEpisode onsen]], regardless if Nanoha knew it or not.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Despite his exceptional level of power (A+ ranked mages are the few elite, and far fewer who can participate in high-speed aerial combat) and many, many skills, Yuuno has little conventional firepower for knocking suspects or wanted criminals unconscious through magical, non-lethal damage. It's never explained whether he has no talent for projectile magic, or simply never tried to master it.
** ''Gears of Destiny'' finally reveals that this is not quite the case. Yuuno does in fact know offensive magic, including a magical projectile spell (a heat-seeking variant of Shoot Bullet, which is otherwise the most basic shooting magic in Midchildan system). However, his long range Chain Bind, Chain Anchor and Protection Smash attacks are mostly meant to get him into close range without getting shot, and he displays more varied, powerful and specialized attack spells in close quarters. He's still mostly defensive, with short combos and counters that let him blast his opponent back if he needs to create some room. He fights by controlling how far or close his opponent is, working to keep them at the range where they are weakest.
* DeflectorShields: One of Yuuno's specialties.
* DemotedToExtra: He gets phased out more and more during subsequent seasons, to the point that he doesn't merit a mention in anything after ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''. He isn't even playable in the ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''-centric ''VideoGame/BattleOfAces'' PSP game and appears only in Nanoha's route, though he finally appears in ''Gears of Destiny'', but with no CGI appearances, all of his battles are optional and he has little relevance in the game's plot ([[RuleOfFunny but his battles are all funny]]). In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'', he's really just Nanoha's pet ferret ([[TalkingAnimal who seems to talk]]), making him less of a threat to [[LesYay NanohaXFate]]. And the movies reduces his appearances even more. He may be in [[ImprobablyFemaleCast the wrong series]]...
** His absence during the first battle against the Wolkenritter in the movie seemed to influence the whole battle, because without his teleportation techniques, Fate couldn't save Nanoha. The result: Vita, not Shamal, extracted Nanoha's Linker Core, and even Fate and Arf's Linker Cores were extracted by the other knights.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: The ending of ''A's'' definitely implied that he had feelings for Nanoha, but per WordOfGay, she ended up with Fate. They remained friends, but that was about it.
* TheDreaded: The InCharacterCommentary of ''The Movie 1st'' implies that Yuuno is this because for being MistakenForBadass.
* ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask: Other mages use Devices to help them do this, but Yuuno does it just fine on his own, even when dueling a superior opponent with far more combat experience. His abilities here, coupled with his talent for search magic, helped make him the head of the Infinity Library [[ImprobableAge before he turned 10]].
* ExpositoryHairStyleChange: He has long hair since the DistantFinale in ''A's'', now as a professor and Chief Librarian.
* {{Familiar}}: Fate and Chrono mistake him for one, at first. This was understandable, since he was shapeshifted into an animal and fulfilled the same basic role for most of TheOriginalSeries.
* HealingHands: He knows the spell ''Physical Heal'' and ''Round Guarder Extend'', the latter being a field spell that creates a healing barrier.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: In the first Megami Sound Stage, he says he's no good at combat magic.
* ImprobableAge: By ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', Yuuno is a professor that regularly gives lectures at age 19. At age ''9'', he was an AdventurerArchaeologist, not to mention an accomplished mage with diverse and potent skills.
* JustFriends: With Nanoha. He tells everyone that he and Nanoha are just ChildhoodFriends, though it's implied that he has feelings for her.
* TheLancer: In the first season. Nanoha loves to blow stuff up, he protects her from return fire. Also, while Nanoha liked to think straightforwardly, he was more of the strategist between the two.
* LethalHarmlessPowers: He can ram those [[BarrierWarrior shields]] into your face. Those chains can [[RazorFloss cut you]]. His teleportation [[TeleFrag does not require consent]]. And because of his [[PsychicPowers sensors]], [[YouWillNotEvadeMe you can't hide from him]]. The only reason we don't see Yuuno fight more is because [[TechnicalPacifist he doesn't like killing]], and all of his combat options are ''incredibly lethal''.
* LimitBreak: ''Arrester Chain'' in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', which deals 40% basic damage, which is the weakest Full Drive Burst along with Arf and Zafira's Full Drive Bursts.
* MagicLibrarian: His ability to find and read multiple books with his magic is the part of the reason for him being appointed as the chief librarian of the Infinite Library. In fact, it's commented in season 2 that the amount of information Yuuno gathers in the Infinity Library using his abilities and the speed in which he acquires them far exceeds that of entire search teams. He is also credited as the one who developed an easily usable search and archiving system in the Infinity Library that allows normal people to find whatever information they need in a short amount of time. This system effectively turned a big part of the Infinity Library from a labyrinth of unsorted information into a reliable source of easily accessible knowledge.
* TheMedic: Before Shamal's introduction to the team, he was the show's primary medic.
* TheMentor: Of Nanoha, and later Vivio. In ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Gears of Destiny]]'', Nanoha's EvilTwin [[LadyOfWar Stern]] and [[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaViVid Ein]][[BloodKnight hart]] fight him because he's just Nanoha's teacher.
** After defeating Stern, she calls him Shishou/Master, which confuses Nanoha to believe he's Stern's master as well.
* MinoredInAssKicking: Considering that Yunno's Chain Binds can rip apart the body of a Superweapon Doom Program ''and'' that he can forcibly teleport people into space to suffocate to death, his merely average firepower belies how deadly he could really be in a fight if he put his mind to it. The ''Gears of Destiny'' game also reveals that he is able and willing to smash his enemies in the face with battering ram charges, melee-range shots delivered through palm-strikes, close-range chain lashing, and explosive capture fields.
* MistakenForBadass: According to Subaru, Teana and Vivio during ''The Movie 1st'' InCharacterCommentary, people who have heard from Nanoha aka the "Ace of Aces" and learn that Yuuno is her magic teacher, but don't know them well, they would assume that Yuuno is some sort of [[MemeticBadass legendary figure who firing off huge Busters and Breakers and says things like "Were you surprised? That was only 20% of my full power!]]" This is the moment where Nanoha realized that she might caused problems for Yuuno ''for years'' without knowing it.
** In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', this is the reason why [[BloodKnight Stern and Einhart]] want to fight him.
* MrExposition: His role in the latter half of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''.
* NonActionGuy: Kinda sorta. Yuuno is certainly not shy about charging off into danger when people need his help, being just as reckless about that as Nanoha. However, he's first and foremost a scholar. While Nanoha pursues a career in the armed forces, Yuuno gets a job as chief librarian of the Infinite Library so he can purse his love of archaeology and research.
* NonHumanSidekick: Nanoha mistakes him for this initially. She wasn't the only one.
* QuicklyDemotedLeader: Quickly gets to the point where he has nothing to teach Nanoha, at least in the realm of combat magic. Canonically, he still continues to teach her spells like Chain Bind and Physical Heal, after the second season.
* RazorFloss: His Chain Bind is used this way in the final battle of the second season. A different version called Aleister Chain (or [[SpellMyNameWithAnS "Arrester" Chain]]) serves as his super-attack in ''Gears of Destiny''; he binds his target up in two chains, then circles the target with two more, then yanks the second set tight. The second chains shatter and [[MadeOfExplodium explode]], followed by the first set.
* RelegatedMentor: Nanoha quickly surpasses him, and he gets PutOnABus in ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Effectively treated this way by the creators, despite actually having a developed personality, loads of plot-potential, and plenty of combat power. Beyond his use as a romantic possibility for Nanoha, the writers simply were not interested in developing anything more about him; they don't even explain where or how he gained Raising Heart. So when they decided, as of ''Sound Stage X'', not to ShipTease Yuuno with Nanoha anymore, [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome he disappeared entirely from the plot and never receives another mention]]. Even back when he was on-screen he had vanishingly few interactions with anyone else in the cast, even counting the supplementary material manga and drama [=CDs=].
* ShieldBash: Has literally an attack called ''Shield Bash''. It's magical, though.
* SpearCounterpart: To Shamal in ''A's''. He's TheMedic, is a defensive mage with low offensive powers, has blond hair, green magic color and a mild personality.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Yuuno vs. Euno, from Eunos, a now-defunct division of Mazda.
* StoneWall: Even without a Device, Yuuno's defenses are stronger than Nanoha's, as Nanoha clarifies in the first ''Megami Sound Stage'' drama disk; she needs to use her full-strength with Raising Heart to pierce through. ''Exactly'' how strong his defenses are is a matter of debate; the issue is tricky, considering his lack of a Device versus the quality of the other character's Devices, ''and'' the fact that he doesn't fight as often.
** The rest of the cast have repeatedly called upon Yuuno to invert this defensive strength, creating force-fields to ''contain'' the massive firepower that Nanoha, Fate, Signum and Hayate throw around in practice matches, either to prevent normals from seeing the light show in the sky or to prevent damage to space-station facilities. However, a firecracker that goes off on your open palm will leave only a small burn, while closing your fist around it will blow off your hand. There is not a single canonical instance of Yuuno successfully containing a Starlight Breaker (even before Nanoha discovered the barrier-piercing ability), let alone the destruction that Nanoha and Fate and Hayate threw at each other.
* TalkingAnimal: His Ferret Mode. In ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaINNOCENT'', he's really just a talking ferret.
* UselessAccessory: His side pouch once contained Raising Heart, but ever afterwards goes unused.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Type 2 with Chrono. Chrono tends to tease him about his ferret form and pile on work for him to do, and while Yuuno doesn't take either without complaint, he and Chrono are essentially friends.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: He is able to transform into a ferret. In the first season, he did this to recover from his injuries faster. However, this doomed him to become Chrono's sole target of his jokes, and ''INNOCENT'' just makes him an actual animal.
* WeakButSkilled: [[PowerLevels A-rank mage]] [[StoneWall without firepower]], [[BewareTheNiceOnes do the math]]. Of course, one of his powers is forced teleportation, which was good enough to send a target out into the deadly vacuum of space (or to potentially bury them underground or drown them in the ocean). He doesn't ''need'' to blast you to beat you. Perhaps the fact that Yuuno is the last person who'd want to kill, while the most obvious offensive application of his skills would be ''very'' lethal, explains why he prefers staying out of the action.
** Even as a StoneWall, in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Yuuno is a very skilled fighter with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxBlZgeAUuU many good combos]] to make up for his normally low damage output.
* WiseBeyondHisYears: How many nine-year-olds do you know who feel so responsible for cleaning up their messes that, even when the mess isn't really their own fault, they'll travel to a world they've never heard of, all alone, without any family or friends, to face danger to life-and-limb in order to fix the problem before anyone gets hurt, even when they could have just waited for the regular authorities to eventually travel there and fix the problem themselves?
* YouDidntAsk: Nanoha spent the first 7 1/2 episodes of the series thinking that he was just a talking ferret instead of a shapeshifting mage, all because he thought that he had already told her.

!!Arf
!!! Voiced by: Creator/NatsukoKuwatani in the Japanese version and Creator/LaurenLanda in the English version.
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arf_6828.jpg]]

Fate's familiar, who accompanies her on her quest to find the Jewel Seeds. Arf was a wolf cub abandoned by her pack due to an illness. Fate found her during her training and saved her life by making her into a familiar.

Arf despises Fate's mother and is only loyal to Fate. Late in the series, when she is injured after attacking Precia over her mistreatment of Fate, she retreats to Earth and seeks help from Nanoha, later helping in the assault on the Garden of Time. She fights alongside the heroes in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', primarily facing off against Zafira.

In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', she takes on the form of a small child in order to use as little of Fate's mana as possible and stays behind to do household chores, believing that Fate has become strong enough to fight on her own. She helps the Harlaown family in the household and is the babysitter of Chrono and Amy's children, Karel and Liera.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: In the Sound Stages, there is a given explanation why she has the appearance of a child in ''[=StrikerS=]''. Anime-only viewers wouldn't get the idea why Arf shrunk while Fate grew up.
* {{Animorphism}}: Looks like a giant fox, though she's said to be a wolf and is mistaken for a dog on Earth.
* BadassCape: Part of her Barrier Jacket. Like some other characters, she also has those "waist capes".
* BarrierWarrior: When fighting alongside Fate she makes barriers.
* BattleButler: Like most familiars.
* BeamSpam: She knows ''Photon Lancer'' and ''Photon Lancer Multishot''.
* TheBerserker: Mostly in ''The Movie 1st''. Nearly every scene has her [[{{ScreamingWarrior}} screaming]] and tossing herself at enemies due to [[{{BerserkButton}} Fate getting hurt or others simply getting in Fate's way]].
* BigEater: Guess what. She's a wolf.
* CallingTheOldWomanOut: Tries to tear Preica a new one, both verbally and physically, for her constant abuse of Fate (the key word here is ''[[CurbStompBattle tries]]").
* CanisMajor: "Wolves" on Mid-childa, look like gigantic foxes from earth.
* ChildEater: In episode 5 of the first season, Arf threatened that she would swallow Nanoha whole if she got in their way too much, though it's very likely this was simply a scare tactic to try and bluff Nanoha into giving up.
* CleavageWindow: Part of her Barrier Jacket, and possibly influenced by Linith's outfit.
* CoolBigSis: Despite technically being younger, she plays this role for Fate in the first and second season due to Fate being in desperate need of a positive influence.
* CuteLittleFangs: When in humanoid form.
* DeathByAdaptation: Not death, but something comparable. Arf's Linker Core gets drained by the Book of Darkness in ''The Movie 2nd A's'', something that didn't happen in the original ''A's'', giving Reinforce the opportunity to abuse Arf's ''Chain Bind''.
* DemotedToExtra: Six years after ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', Arf retires from active duty because Fate is strong enough to fight on her own. She spends most of her time around the Harlaown house, doing chores and looking after Chrono and Amy's children. She wasn't playable in the ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''-centric ''VideoGame/BattleOfAces'' (though she is in the sequel). She has yet to appear in ''[=ViVid=]'' or ''Force''. And despite the fact that Yuuno and Chrono are the infamous {{Butt Monkey}}s regarding the lack of screentime, Arf had it always worse than them outside the first two seasons. Arf has less screen time than both of them in ''[=StrikerS=]'', and ''Yuuno'' appears in ''[=ViVid=]'' before her. Though, she does appear in ''The Movie 1st'' Sound Stage ''Side F'' (which take places in ''[=ViVid=]''), but she does not appear in ''The Movie 2nd A's'' InCharacterCommentary, despite even Yuuno and Chrono being a part of the 21 commentary members. Instead, [[Creator/NatsukoKuwatani Lutecia Alpine]] "takes her place", who tries to imitate her voice twice.
* DistaffCounterpart: To Zafira.
* DualAgeModes: She can freely change her apparent age in both her human and wolf forms. In fact, she does this so often that her human form only ever appears as her actual age in the main timeline is during the second Sound Stage of the first season (and it's only ever been seen animated during ''Reflection''). Pre-TimeSkip, she took on an adult form to act as a surrogate mother/older sister for Fate, and post-TimeSkip she appears as a child to use as little of Fate's mana as possible.
* {{Familiar}}: For Fate. Unlike most familiars, her contract is open-ended, meaning that she is not magically bound to obey Fate's orders.
* FireForgedFriends: Strongly dislikes Nanoha at first, thinking she's weak and is trying to trick Fate into abandoning her quest. She eventually decides to cooperate with Nanoha for Fate's sake, though, and starts to like her after seeing [[WhenSheSmiles how happy Fate is]] after becoming Nanoha's friend.
* FriendToAllChildren: Better pronounced in post-''A's'', she used to play with Erio and Caro when they were younger, and is babysitting Karel and Liera now. She also played with Vivio.
* HappilyAdopted: While it's not clear if she was formally adopted alongside Fate, she does refer to Lindy as "mother" during ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: In Episode 10 of the first series, she attacks Precia over how she treats Fate, and is defeated.]] After being found by Alisa, Nanoha and Yuuno meet her, and she agrees to help them save Fate.
* HeyYou: Has quite a few insulting nicknames for Nanoha at first, before she's ultimately forced to work with her in saving Fate.
* HypercompetentSidekick: In the first two seasons. Without Arf, Fate would be arrested much earlier; Fate nearly defeated Vita thanks to Arf's assistance, if Signum and Zafira hadn't interferred. Like Yuuno to Nanoha and Reinforce to Hayate, Arf is Fate's HypercompetentSidekick in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', where Arf can defeat even Levi the Slasher if the player choose her instead of Fate[[note]]the player has to choose Arf fighting Dark Piece Precia first[[/note]].
* IOweYouMyLife: Due to the open-ended nature of her contract, she is not magically bound to be loyal to Fate. Instead, her loyalty stems from the fact that Fate saved her life by turning her into a Familiar.
* ImAHumanitarian: Arf threatens to swallow Nanoha whole the first time they meet if she keeps getting in Fate's way. Whether or not she actually would do that, or if she was just trying to intimidate Nanoha, is left up in the air.
* InconsistentSpelling: Spellings include Arf, Aruf and Alph. And to make things ''more'' confusing, the English dub uses... ''[[InconsistentDub all of them]]''. More recently, the official English subtitles from the home release of the movie used "[[Series/{{Alf}} Alf]]".
* JackOfAllStats: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Arf is an overall balanced character, who has average defense, average damage output, is a decent fighter in close range and long range combat, but has one of the weakest {{Limit Break}}s.
* LimitBreak: ''Lightning Howl'' in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', which deals 40% basic damage, that is the weakest Full Drive Burst along with Yuuno and Zafira's Full Drive Bursts.
* LittleBitBeastly: Her humanoid form. Though, she can hide her ears and tail when necessary.
* MagicallyBindingContract: DoubleSubverted. The open ended nature of their contract means that she is not magically compelled to serve Fate, but the fact that Fate [[IOweYouMyLife saved her life]] (along with her canine nature) means that she is just as -if not more- loyal than your average familiar.
* MamaBear: Do anything to Fate and she will end you.
* MsFanservice: In the first two seasons, the camera gives her [[MaleGaze quite a lot of attention]]. Her {{Stripperiffic}} outfit helps, as does her devotion to [[MyMasterRightOrWrong her mistress]], which often crosses over into LesYay territory.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: She hates Precia and tries to convince Fate to give up looking for the search for the Jewel Seeds on a few occasions, but nevertheless continues to help her. Fate later regrets not listening to Arf and causing her pain by persisting.
* NobleWolf: Loyal, protective, and a FriendToAllChildren.
* NonHumanSidekick: Wolfgirl sidekick, but Arf is in fact a magical construct, though the series tends to view magical constructs and even sufficiently advanced {{Magitek}} devices as human enough. In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', typically takes on the form of a small red dog when she's on Earth so as not to attract suspicion, and recommends that Zafira do the same toward the end of the last episode.
* OlderThanSheLooks: In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', which takes place 10 years after ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', she takes the form of a small girl to consume as little of Fate's mana as possible.
* OnlyOneName: Due to her nature as a familiar, she doesn't adopt the name Harlaown.
* RoofHopping: In the first season.
* SayMyName: Arf shouts Fate's name a lot. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', she even screams it when Arf goes KO.
* ScreamingWarrior: Though, Vita and Zafira beat her in volumes.
* ShesAllGrownUp: Inverted. She ''shrunk'' since ''[=StrikerS=]''. Justified, she has the ability to change her physical age.
* ShipTease: Subtle with Zafira. He's her SpearCounterpart, Arf feeds him with meat in the ''[=StrikerS=]'' manga, and she appears in Zafira's route in ''VideoGame/TheBattleOfAces''; the only three other routes in which she appears are Nanoha, Fate and Chrono's. In Fate and Chrono's cases, she's a part of their family, in Nanoha's case, she appears alongside with Fate. In Zafira's case, there is no given reason, except maybe this trope. And at one point, she contacts Fate when the latter defeats the Dark Piece version of Zafira.
* SignatureMove: Her ''Barrier Break'', a spell that [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin breaks barriers and shields]].
* SpinningPiledriver: Her LimitBreak ''Lightning Howl'' in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'' is one.
* {{Stripperific}}: Her Barrier Jacket has a midriff-exposing top with a CleavageWindow and short shorts that expose her panty. Yes, she's a member of the Testarossa family.
* TalkingAnimal: A Mid-childan Dire Wolf, to be precise.
* TearsOfJoy: After seeing [[WhenSheSmiles how happy Fate is]] when the latter becomes friends with Nanoha. She was also crying after Fate recovered from her HeroicBSOD (TheMovie even added in CryIntoChest).
* ThirdPersonPerson: In her early life as a familiar, as shown in Sound Stage 2 of TheOriginalSeries.
* UndyingLoyalty: Toward Fate, as a result of affection and appreciation rather than contract. Fate only made Arf a familiar to save her life, and made the terms of her contract to live as she wished. Fate also left the contract completely open in duration - only actual physical death will end it.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Her typical form in the first two seasons is a girl in her late teens or early twenties, but she was created by the nine-year-old Fate, and is thus younger than her. Interestingly enough, her "official" age is 16 as of the original series, despite being chronologically much younger. Since Nanoha knows that Arf isn't as old as she appear, Nanoha drops calling her "Arf-san", but only "Arf". It's implied that the reason she looks older is due to her base as a familiar being a wolf; the [[AllThereInTheManual second sound stage]] reveals she basically reached that appearance in a year.

[[folder:Precia Testarossa]]
!!Precia Testarossa
!!!Voiced by: Creator/ReiIgarashi in Japanese, Creator/JulieReiGoldstein in English
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/precia_testarossa.jpg]]

The main antagonist of the original series, who seeks the Jewel Seeds to travel to Al Hazard to resurrect her dead daughter Alicia. Apparently died when she and the capsule containing Alicia's body fell into the trans-dimensional void.
----
* AbledInTheAdaptation: Canon Precia was both mentally and physically ill, having descended into madness and was in the final stages of a terminal illness. Her ''INNOCENT'' counterpart on the other hand is the picture of perfect health and is ([[AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents mostly]]) sane.
* AbusiveMom: Emotionally and physically, although she was merely cold and distant before Linith's death. In one truly horrifying first season scene, she [[MoralEventHorizon chains Fate up and whips her]] as punishment for not collecting enough Jewel Seeds (Arf's internal monologue even implies that this is a regular occurrence). However, during the InCharacterCommentary, Fate [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation assumes that Precia didn't hate her that much as she said]]. Fate says if Precia really hated her, she would abuse her daughter even more, but Fate never received wounds that couldn't be healed by first aid magic.
* AgeLift: She's around the same age as Lindy in ''INNOCENT''. To put it in perspective how much of a difference this is, Lindy was born the same year as ''Alicia'' in canon.
* AllAbusersAreMale: Averted. Precia is, to date, the ''only'' abuser in the main continuity.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'', to ''both'' of her daughters.
* BadassCape: Part of her Barrier Jacket/dress like Fate, but Precia's is not long. [[http://i.imgur.com/4GWA2cb.jpg Spark Girl Precia-chan]] has also a short cape.
* BecameTheirOwnAntithesis: She is shown in flashbacks to be a DotingParent to her daughter. This is in contrast to the current Precia, who is an AbusiveParent that literally whips her daughter at the slightest provocation. This is one of the reasons why Fate still loves her despite all the suffering she receives, as she remembers a time when she used to be kind. Unfortunately for Fate, the reason for this change is because [[spoiler:[[ReplacementGoldfish Fate is a failed attempt to revive Precia's dead daughter]], and she's unwilling to [[CloneAngst treat a clone like Fate as a second daughter]]]].
* BeehiveBarrier: Her magical shield is composed of hexagons, as seen when Arf [[BerserkButton flips the fuck out]] and attacks Precia for whipping Fate.
* BigBad: Precia is this in spades in season one.
** BigBadEnsemble: Averted in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny''. Dark Piece Precia discovers that there's a TimeMachine (which can only be used for one last time), and she wants to use it to save Alicia. However, instead being a second to the heroes besides the BigBad Unbreakable Dark, she is immediately fought by the good Dark Piece Linith. Both [[DisappearsIntoLight Disappear Into Light]] and make peace.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: She's the ''boke'' to Lindy's tsukkomi in ''INNOCENT''.
* BoomStick: One of her Device's forms.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Precia at first was designed as the champion of "[[EvilMatriarch Worst Anime Mom Ever]]" that even her FreudianExcuse was not enough to cover for that. After the 1st movie actually SHOWED (not just telling) how crushed she was on Alicia's death and how broken she was in ''Gears of Destiny'', fans could buy the excuse better, and it topped in ''INNOCENT'' where Precia ends up ''without'' her abusive traits, an actually endearing [[DotingParent Doting Mom]]. Either way, looking at Precia as she first appeared and as she ended up now could be rather jarring. [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools In a good way too]].
* ColdBloodedTorture: Inflicts this on Fate twice onscreen and it's implied to be a regular event.
* CreepyMonotone
* CurbStompBattle: Defeats Arf and the enforcers sent after her with hardly any effort at all.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The movie adaptation of the first series provides her with far more background exploration and characterization than she had in the original anime did.
* DisneyVillainDeath: Falls into an interdimensional void.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: [[KickTheDog Whipping Fate for not getting enough seeds]].
* EvenEvilCanBeLoved: Fate genuinely loves Precia and believes she can still redeem her despite everyone, from Nanoha, to Arf, to the TSAB, telling her otherwise. Even after being HappilyAdopted by Lindy, Fate keeps a picture of Precia by her bedside well into adulthood.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Went from wearing a sensible blouse and skirt pair with regularly parted hair back when Alicia was alive to her {{stripperific}} dress and bangs after she went crazy.
* EvilCounterpart: For Lindy, who was introduced in the same episode. It's made blatantly obvious upon their first interactions with their children (Lindy wishes Chrono good luck when he leaves on his mission, Precia whips Fate when she comes back from her mission). Flashback show that Precia used to be a DotingParent who was MarriedToTheJob, much like Lindy is in the present. They also have a connection via Fate, who is the second child for both of them (even if Preica never viewed Fate as a daughter).
** She's also one to Hayate. Both are SS-Ranked mages who were suffering from terminal illnesses, lost family members, had the UndyingLoyalty of respective season's {{Anti Villain}}s, and an association with cats (Precia had [[CatGirl Linith]] as her familiar and Hayate's first friend was [[KindheartedCatLover Suzuka]]). Precia was a cold AbusiveParent who treated Fate ([[ReplacementGoldfish who was created to be her daughter]]) like a tool, while Hayate treated the Wolkenritter (who were created to be her servants) as her family. Precia was the BigBad who ordered Fate to collect the Jewel Seeds while Hayate was oblivious to the actions of the Wolkenritter and would later go on to be the BigGood. Precia viewed Fate as a failed copy of Alicia while Hayate views Reinforce Zwei as a separate person from Reinforce Eins. And most tellingly, Precia had a cat familiar and Hayate has a Wolf [[InsistentTerminology Guardian Beast]].
* EvilMatriarch: To Fate.
* EvilPlan: Recover the Jewel Seeds [[spoiler:to revive her daughter.]]
* EvilSorcerer: Surprisingly, she's the only one in the entire franchise. ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' has a WeaponOfMassDestruction with a SuperpoweredEvilSide, who is the true BigBad, and AntiVillain {{Magic Knight}}s. ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'' has three AntiVillain[=/=]AntiHero {{Evil Knockoff}}s and an AntiVillain PersonOfMassDestruction. ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikerS StrikerS]]'' has a MadScientist, twelve ([[spoiler:later thirteen]]) [[{{Cyborg}} Combat Cyborgs]], and a group of {{Anti Villain}}s. ''Audioplay/StrikersSoundStageX'' has an UnSorcerer BigBad and an army of NightOfTheLivingMooks. ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaViVid ViVid]]'' lacks a BigBad, with a [[CuteWitch Cute]]/HotWitch to be the closest villain, who could become a BigBad. ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce FORCE]]'' has [[AntiMagic Eclipse Drivers]]. And ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'' lacks any kind of villains, not to mention that all {{Magical Girl}}s are only avatars in cyberspace and magic does not exist in that "real world", and Precia is a ''sane'' and ''loveable'' mother to Alica ''and'' Fate, and she's pretty much a PluckyComicRelief.
* ExpositoryHairStyleChange: She got bangs and even longer hair, which shows how evil she became.
* FallenHero: She was once a brilliant scientist and a loving mother, but she became blinded by her own grief.
* FondMemoriesThatCouldHaveBeen: [[spoiler:When Alicia died, she realized just how she has neglected her daughter and wished that she had spend more time with her]]. Too bad she went off the deep end.
** A second one occurs in the movie, [[spoiler:where as she falls to her death, Precia remembered that Alicia once wanted a little sister and realized that she could've treated Fate as another daughter instead of a failed replacement for Alicia]]. Unfortunately, there is no longer enough time left to make amends or even apologize.
* GlassCannon: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Precia has the lowest defense after Fate and Levi in their Sonic[=/=]Sprite Forms and she's slow. A single LimitBreak either kills her or she barely survives it. However, Precia's attacks are very powerful and she has one of the two most powerful {{Limit Break}}s alongside Shamal's in the game.
* HateSink: Used to be this in the original series, she'd usually top the cases of "Worst Anime Mom" and it was the author's intention to make her really despicable. Thanks to CharacterizationMarchesOn, introduction of several other disliked characters and [[Anime/KillLaKill other bad moms in other anime]] introduced, [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap she no longer fitted this trope.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: In ''INNOCENT'' with Lindy.
* HeyYou: Tends to refer to Fate as "that girl" when talking about her to others, [[spoiler:possibly to reflect her contempt for her as a clone]], but tends to address her by name when speaking to her.
* HistoricalVillainDowngrade: In-Universe example. While the movie doesn't make any attempt to gloss over Precia's crimes, it does try to paint her as more of a TragicVillain who is shown to regret her actions in her final moments. Given that Fate served as a technical advisor for the movie, it would be fair to assume that she asked for her mother to be portrayed in a more sympathetic light.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: Desperate to reach Al Hazard before dying of her disease or being arrested by the TSAB, she tried to go do the dimensional transference when she had nine out of 21 Jewel Seeds, short of even the 14-seed bare minimum she suspected she would need. She falls to her death as the transference fails and her lair collapses.
* IgnoredExpert: In the movie, Precia tried to explain to her superiors that accelerating the timeline for the final stage of her reactor project from one month to one ''week'' was a bad idea. They didn't listen, and the disaster that resulted from that foolish management decision cost Precia her daughter and, eventually, her sanity.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Suffering this as early as the second Sound Stage of the original series, which takes place two years before the series begins.
* KindheartedCatLover: She was one to Linith before the dramatic accident happened. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Precia has not forgotten that she was a KindheartedCatLover and reminds Linith of the latter's lost precious memory before they both [[DisappearsIntoLight fade away]].
* KnightOfCerebus
* LadyOfBlackMagic: She always speaks very formally and wears a revealing yet elegant dress, and is probably one of the most powerful mages in the entire series.
* LimitBreak: ''Crucifixion'' in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', which deals 60% basic damage that is the strongest Full Drive Burst along with Shamal's.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: She completely ''lost'' it when her daughter Alicia died. In [[spoiler: Alicia]]'s words:
--> "She was a really kind person. Because she was so kind, she broke [[spoiler: while trying to revive me after I died...]]"
* MadScientist: So what if we cause a dimensional cataclysm or blow up a city!
* MadnessMakeover: Sane Precia was a kindly smiling woman with hair neatly combed back. Insane Precia is a madly laughing woman prone to pupil shrinkage with unkempt hair that's always covering one of her eyes. Also, Sane!Precia has a much better fashion sense. Insane!Precia... [[EvilCostumeSwitch Well...]]
* MsFanservice: Her dress seems to be made only for this.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Her dress/Barrier Jacket (?) has a plunging neckline.
* {{Necromantic}}: Precia [[spoiler:created Fate was as a ReplacementGoldfish for Alicia, and wanted to use the technology of Al Hazard to resurrect Alicia]].
* NeverFoundTheBody: While she is presumably dead, given that she fell into an interdimensional vacuum in space while suffering from a terminal disease, the series doesn't make it 100% clear one way or the other if Precia survived or not.
* NoNameGiven: Her Device.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Precia almost sounds like [[{{Literature/Slayers}} Naga]] sometimes.
* NotQuiteFlight: One of her abilities is levitation, which she sometimes uses on herself.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Looks in her 20s to early 30s, but is actually age '''54''' at the time of her introduction in episode 7. She doesn't even have a single middle/old age wrinkle on her face. Time has been very kind to her appearance. And she needed only 22 years to [[spoiler:clone Alicia and create Fate]].
* OrcusOnHisThrone: It's made clear from the first time we see her that she's much stronger than Fate, but due her terminal illness, relies on her to find the Jewel Seeds anyways. She also lacks actual combat skills.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Alicia died at the age of 5. Precia was unable to cope and spent the next 26 years trying to bring her back to life. Averted with Fate, who is still alive and well over a decade and a half after Preica's death.
* ParentalNeglect: She started off this way for Fate, spending all her time in her study while Linith raised Fate. Then Linith died, and she went headlong into AbusiveParents territory.
* PetTheDog: In a rare show of kindness, for the type of woman she is now, Dark Piece Precia does this for Dark Piece Linith during ''Gears of Destiny'' by telling her that the two of them [[TogetherInDeath holding each other in death]] isn't the first they held each other to sleep. This causes Linith to flashback to when she was a regular cat and remembering the days [[KindheartedCatLover Precia would lovingly stroke her head]] which causes Linith to [[TearsOfJoy burst into tears]] and die happily as the two of them [[DisappearsIntoLight Disappear Into The Light]].
* PosthumousCharacter: She falls to her presumed death at the end of the first season, but her influence can still be felt even ten years after the fact due to the effect that her abuse had on Fate.
* PsychoElectro: In addition to her being mentally unstable, most of her powers are electricity-based.
* PurpleIsPowerful: The color of her dress/Barrier Jacket, Device, and magic. Furthermore, she is the character with the highest magic rank (SS) introduced so far and has her power naturally.
* RememberedTooLate: Part of her characterization in the anime. By the end of the movie, [[spoiler:[[FondMemoriesThatCouldHaveBeen it is her]] FatalFlaw.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Apparently her Magic Conversion Affinity, as most of her powerful spells are lightning based.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent [=INNOCENT=]]]'', where she happily lives together with her daughters, both Alicia ''and'' Fate, and is the co-owner of ''Hobby Shop T&H'' together with Lindy.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Precia or Presea? In ''Lyrical Party IV'', Raising Heart pronounces her name as "Plecia".
* SquishyWizard: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', most of Precia's attacks are magic based. The only moves of her that are physical are her whip attacks which are both her EX move and her grab move. See also GlassCannon above.
* StartOfDarkness: [[spoiler:Alicia Testarossa's]] death was this for Precia. Even so she still showed ''some'' kindness even to Fate, but ''slowly'' became a monster after Linith disappeared.
* {{Stripperific}}: Her dress is really revealing.
* SuperpowerLottery: One of only two SS rank mages in the series, and unlike Hayate, Precia's power is entirely natural. She performs what is quite possibly the most impressive feat of magic in the entire series when she casts a spell powerful enough to disable a spaceship from another dimension, and she effortlessly slaughters the TSAB personnel sent to arrest her. And this was after years of suffering from insanity and an IncurableCoughOfDeath. It boggles the mind to think how powerful she must have been in her prime.
** Some of her feats include: hitting a large target in dimension space (as noted above) and a small target in another world (the spell that hit Fate after her battle with Nanoha) from her lair, implied to be quite deep within dimension space itself, [[CurbStompbattle Severely injuring Arf without batting an eye]] and summoning an entire army of MechaMooks that can give a highly trained Enforcer a run for his money. Again, as noted above, all of this while suffering from insanity, an incurable disease, and is practically living on borrowed time.
* TastesLikeDisdain: Fate brings her some pastries as a gift when she comes to report on her hunt for the Jewel Seeds. In the anime, she flat out ignores them, with there being a shot of the box sitting untouched on a table after she finishes whipping Fate. The movie version on the other hand has her angrily smack the box out of Fate's hands, taking it as a sign that she's wasting time rather than focusing on her mission.
* {{Telekinesis}}: She display this ability from time to time.
* {{Telepathy}}: Pretty much the most common ability.
* ThatThingIsNotMyChild: [[spoiler:She rejects Fate due to her not being a perfect clone of Alicia.]]
* ThoseTwoGirls: With Lindy in ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]''.
* TogetherInDeath: According to the ''MOVIE 2nd A's'' tribute manga, she was reunited in Alicia in heaven. That's right, ''Precia'' went to heaven.
* TomboyishPonytail: [[http://i.imgur.com/4GWA2cb.jpg Spark Girl Precia-chan]] wears one. It's rather cute than tomboyish.
* TooPowerfulToLive: As mentioned above in SuperpowerLottery Precia is the only SS rank mage in the series who acquired her powers naturally. She was shown being able to fire incredibly powerful magic multiple dimensions away, slaughtering an entire force of TSAB troops send to capture her and the ability to remotely control an army of MechaMooks shown to give Chrono, Nanoha and Yuuno trouble. Therefore she falls to her ([[NeverFoundTheBody presumed]]) death at the end of the first season most likely because, if she had sticked around, [[CurbStompBattle Nanoha and co would have suffered the same fate as Arf]].
* TragicVillain: More pronounced in the movie.
* TroubledAbuser: She's horrifically abusive to her daughter, Fate, [[spoiler:due to having been driven insane from the death of her real daughter, Alicia, whom Fate was cloned from to serve as a ReplacementGoldfish.]]
* UnfinishedUntestedUsedAnyway: This trope used to be called "But Sir, It's Not Ready!", which is what Precia tried to tell to her superiors in the reactor project. They [[{{Greed}} didn't listen]]. And we all know [[BreakTheCutie how]] [[LoveMakesYouCrazy that]] [[StartOfDarkness turned]] [[FallenHero out]]...
* TheUnfettered: She will stop at nothing in order to [[spoiler: bring her daughter back to life]].
* TheUnfought: She [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomped]] Arf before the latter's HeelFaceTurn, but nobody fought her at all. Most likely because [[SuperpowerLottery nobody on the good guys side would be able to defeat her]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: ''INNOCENT'' is not canon and seems to exaggerate her nice personality, but since we know that she ''wasn't'' evil until her StartOfDarkness, [[http://i.imgur.com/4GWA2cb.jpg Spark Girl Precia-chan]] might be true in someway.
* UnskilledButStrong: Precia is one of the most powerful mages in the entire franchise, being a SS-rank mage like Hayate. However, like Hayate, she lacks actual combat skills, which is mentioned by Fate in ''The Movie 1st'' InCharacterCommentary.
* VaporWear: Look at her dress/Barrier Jacket (?)! There is no way she wears underwear.
* VehicularThemeNaming: After [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Presea Nissan Presea]] and [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_Testarossa Ferrari Testarossa]].
* WentCrazyWhenTheyLeft: This is her defining character trait. The death of [[spoiler:her daughter Alicia]] caused her sanity to slowly degrade, and what little bits she had left shattered completely after [[MoralityChain Linith]] faded away, turning her into the abusive monster seen during the series proper.
* WhamLine:
-->'''Precia''': I'll put an end to everything. To all the time this girl was deprived of when I lost her.. and also [[spoiler:to the doll I created to play as my daughter]].
* WhipOfDominance: She is a cold EvilMatriarch in a skimpy HellBentForLeather outfit whose Intelligent Device often takes the form of a whip (its default form is a staff) which she can use both in combat and as a tool of torture and dominance. The first time we see her use it, it's to [[AbusiveParents brutally whip her daughter Fate]].
* WhyDidYouMakeMeHitYou: This makes up most of her dialogue when she's talking to Fate, playing the disappointed parent card while committing horrific acts of child abuse.

Precia's familiar, who was created to further Fate's education and make Bardiche. Although she cared greatly for Fate, she was unable to go against Precia, even at the end of her life. The records she left behind, however, helped prove Fate's innocence in the Lost Logia case.
----
* AdaptationNameChange: In ''INNOCENT'', the human Rynith is named "Rynith Lanster" and is Teana's older sister.
* AllThereInTheManual: In the TV series, she only appears once in Fate's LotusEaterMachine sequence with no explanation of who she is (save for a vague comment Fate made on her first day of school about having a tutor). However, she is central in the second Sound Stage, and is frequently referenced in the other Sound Stages and the manga. She is also in the {{flashback}}s in TheMovie and her role is further expanded in its accompanying manga.
* AscendedExtra: She appears in TheMovie and is playable in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny''. While it's not as noticeable as the previous two entries she is also a supporting character in ''INNOCENT'' as well.
* TheBusCameBack: Reappear in ''[[Videogame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Gears of Destiny]]'', due to the power of Unbreakable Dark. She just want to check whether Fate and Arf... [[AndZoidberg and Bardiche]] are doing okay, as well as making peace with Precia. [[spoiler:[[BackForTheDead She's not here to stay.]]]]
* ButNowIMustGo: Disappears after Fate's training and Bardiche are complete, per her contract.
* CatGirl: Though she usually conceals her feline features.
* ChefOfIron: Implied. She was Fate's combat instructor, and the one who taught her how to cook.
* CleavageWindow: Her uniform.
* DecompositeCharacter: Her cat and human forms are two separate characters in ''INNOCENT''.
* DisappearsIntoLight: How she died. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', she disappears twice in Sequence 07.
* {{Familiar}}: Precia's. Created to teach Fate as the sole purpose of her contract.
* FinalFirstHug: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] Linith thinks that this will happen when both her and Precia are dying near the end of ''Gears of Destiny'' since her master never showed any kindness to her when she was her {{familiar}}. However Precia reveals that the two of them used to sleep together back when she was a regular cat allowing Linith to die happy.
* FragileSpeedster: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', it's shown that she has a spell called [[SuperSpeed Fast Step]] that allows her to move faster than any other character's acceleration[[note]]not to confuse with the Gears' Accelerator that is even faster than Linith's Fast Step[[/note]]. Her defense is still bad.
* GlassCannon: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Linith's LimitBreak is above average and is even slightly stronger than Nanoha and Stern's, but her defense is even lower than Fate's Lightning Form or Levi's Slash Suit.
* LimitBreak: ''Plasma Saber'' in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', which deals 48% basic damage, that is slightly above average and deals 0.5% more basic damage than Nanoha's ''Starlight Breaker'' and Stern's ''Shin Luciferion Breaker''.
* MagicWand: Tact is the only known Device that actually looks like a wand.
* {{Meido}}: Not the typical maid uniform, but you can see she's one.
* TheMentor: Linith was specifically created by Precia to be this for Fate, complete with her contract expiring together with her life once she's finished training Fate. When a pseudo-revived version of hers appeared in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', she showed just how much more skilled she was compared to Fate, beating everyone she met from Nanoha, to Signum, to Reinforce (albeit a weakened one) despite not taking the fights too seriously, and eventually being the only one capable of defeating a similarly pseudo-revived version of Precia.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: Justified. As a familiar, she could only live until the terms of her familar contract were complete, and terms of her contract were "train Fate".
* MoralityChain: Precia still showed some bits of her lost humanity when Linith was around. After she disappeared, well, things went worse. Arf suggests that Linith would have told Precia off for hitting Fate for the book she retrieved not having what she wanted if she had still been around.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: Her device gained the name "Tact" in ''INNOCENT''.
* OddNameOut: Due to her originally being a completely unrelated character, she lacks the "name beginning with Ti" theme of the Lanster siblings in ''INNOCENT''.
* ParentalSubstitute: The closest thing to a mother figure Fate has until her adoption. When she "dies", she tells Precia that she regretted that Fate was not her own daughter.
* PosthumousCharacter: She dies before the start of the series.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: She's the middle child of the Lanster siblings in ''INNOCENT''.
* ServileSnarker: Has little respect for Precia, and is not above talking back or using sarcasm even during her last words ("my never kind master, Precia"). She has a better relationship with Fate, but is not above teasing her a little over her being sleepy in her LotusEaterMachine dream.
** ''[[Videogame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Gears of Destiny]]'' shows that she actually loves Precia ''a lot''. Just like Fate want to be loved as Precia's daughter, so too she wants to be loved as Precia's familiar. She does reconcile with Precia at the end of her story arc.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In ''INNOCENT''. Interestingly, both her human form and cat form appearing seperately in this manga. The human Linith has the surname Lanster (being Teana's older sister), and the cat is refered as "Linith/Rynith the 2nd".
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Does it begin with an L or an R, and does it end with an s or a th? One of the most unfortunate names from a Romanization standpoint.
** ''[[Videogame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Gears of Destiny]]'' says "Rynith". Unfortunately, that game also give name such as [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks "'Load' Dearche" and "Levi"]] to the Materials, so the fans are likely to continue the disputes. The fact that it's an AlternateContinuity doesn't help.
*** The ''INNOCENT'' card game spells her name as Rynith. On the other hand, the spellings are really inconsistent, especially with Alisa's name.
** In ''Lyrical Party IV'', Raising Heart pronouns her name as "Rinis".
* SquishyWizard: As shown in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', all of Linith's attacks are magic-based. It's actually weird that she needs to kick her opponent to connect with her LimitBreak. See also GlassCannon above.
* TakeCareOfTheKids: Her last words before fading away were asking Bardiche to look after Fate and Arf.
* TearsOfJoy: See Precia's [[PetTheDog Pet The Cat]] entry above. After hearing that Linith dies with a smile on her face telling Precia that she is truly happy.

Precia's deceased daughter, [[LoveMakesYouEvil for whom Precia went completely nuts]], and for whom Fate was cloned as a temporary replacement. Precia sought the lost technology of Al Hazard to resurrect her. If she wasn't already [[KilledOffForReal irreversibly dead]], she became so when her pod fell into the trans-dimensional void alongside Precia. A false version of her was created in Fate's LotusEaterMachine, where she regretted not having met in real life, and offers Fate some encouragement.

Outside the main continuity, she is one of the five main characters in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaINNOCENT''.
----
* AscendedExtra: In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'', she becomes a main character and is a MagicalGirl like her sister.
* CheerfulChild: Unlike Fate, she is cheerful for most of the time.
* CombatCommentator: In ''[=INNOCENT=]''. Unfortunately, co-commentator Amy does not get many lines because of her.
* CoolBigSis: To Fate. PlayedForLaughs in ''INNOCENT'', when she read Fate's letter from the first grade. Fate wrote how much she adores her Onee-chan.
* DeadPersonConversation: In Fate's LotusEaterMachine.
* DeathByOriginStory: Alicia's death made her mother insane who became determined to revive her in some way, which resulted in Fate's birth.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: DisappearsIntoLight in your arms, but the emotional effect was the same.
* DisappearedDad: Not getting the slightest mention.
* DisappearsIntoLight: She faded away [[DiedInYourArmsTonight in Fate's arms]] after Fate chose the real world over [[LotusEaterMachine a dream]].
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Her last words were telling Fate how she wished she could have been her sister in real life. The movie version even used the words "I love you."
* FetalPositionRebirth: Though she's never actually reborn.
* FinalFirstHug: Gets one with Fate in ''A's'', just before she disappears. Also overlaps with DiedInYourArmsTonight.
* GenkiGirl: In a huge contrast to Fate.
* GoOutWithASmile: There's a smile on her face as she fades away in Fate's arms.
* GirlishPigtails: Parts of her hair are bound as two pigtails.
* TheGunslinger: In ''[=INNOCENT=]'', her Lucky Star has two guns as its standard form.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold
* InformedFlaw: When comparing her with the gentle Fate, Precia mentions Alicia as always talking egotistically, but we never see her behaving like this. The nearest thing we get is her portrayal in Fate's LotusEaterMachine, where Alicia is simply shown as somewhat cheeky and carefree.
* LeftHandedMirror: The first hint that Fate is different from Alicia.
* MsExposition: In ''INNOCENT'', much to [[MrExposition Amy's]] dismay.
* MsFanservice: In ''INNOCENT''. [[CostumePorn She loves to wear different costumes]], including a bunny or cheerleader outfit. She drags Fate in the latter, too.
* OlderThanTheyLook: ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaINNOCENT INNOCENT]]'' kept her five year old appearance, despite the fact that she is at least ten years old in that continuity.
* PeopleJars: [[{{Necromantic}} Precia]] stores her lifeless body in one, hoping to revive her.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died 26 years before the story began.
* PosthumousSibling: She had been dead for over twenty years by the time Fate was created. Fate is technically her clone rather than her sibling, but Fate (and Dream!Alicia inside the Book of Darkness' LotusEaterMachine) always refer to her as an older sister.
* PracticallyDifferentGenerations: She was born 27 years before Fate was created.
* SiblingsWanted: In TheMovie, Alicia asked Precia for a little sister--something that Precia remembers way too late.
* SiblingYinYang: In the actual series, this is PlayedForDrama. Fate was too different to Alicia, that's why Fate was physically abused and used as a pawn by Precia.
** Alicia is cheerful, childish (justified, she ''is'' one) and open. Fate is shy, calm, and more serious.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In ''[=INNOCENT=]''.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Alicia or Aricia?
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: A bonus chapter of ''[=ViVid=] Life'' set in the ''[=INNOCENT=]'' continuity has her taking increasingly risque photos of herself and her friends [[ItMakesSenseInContext to trade online for candy]], which eventually escalates to her trying to set up a photoshoot of Nanoha and Fate naked in the bath. Understandably, Lindy subjects her to a several hour long scolding when she sees what they're doing.
* WalkingSpoiler: She's dead and Precia cloned her which resulted Fate's birth. Her existence is a spoiler.

[[quoteright:339:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chrono_harlaown_7.jpg]]

One of the top Enforcers on the ''Arthra'' and the son of Captain/Admiral Lindy Harlaown. While not as powerful as Nanoha or Fate, Chrono (initially) has far more experience. Stoic and logical, Chrono prefers to assess a situation and wait for a chance to strike, and he can get somewhat annoyed by Nanoha's impulsive actions. Chrono singlehandedly determines cause of the unusual events in season 2, but hardly appears in season 3.

Currently an admiral himself, he's the captain of the ''Claudia'' and is married with Amy and has fraternal twins with her, Karel and Liera. Chrono has yet to appear in ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaViVid ViVid]]'' or ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', but he appears in ''The Movie 1st'' Sound Stage F and in ''The Movie 2nd A's'' audio commentary, both taking place in the ''[=ViVid=]'' timeline.
----
* TheAce: He's an Enforcer, who are the elite agents of the TSAB, counting among both its top investigators and its most powerful or skilled mages. And he has become an Admiral.
* ActionDad: Subverted. After he became an admiral and father of twins, he gets much less action than before, and if he does, it's off-screen.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: In earlier seasons.
* AncestralWeapon: Durandal's origin is rewritten in ''The Movie 2nd A's'', where it belonged to his late father Clyde and not Gil Graham.
* BadassAdorable: In his teens, as [[OlderThanHeLooks he looked younger than he actually was]].
* BadassArmfold: Does this fairly often.
** Durandal in ''A's''.
* BadassLongcoat: Standard issue for TSAB Enforcers.
* BeamSpam: ''Stinger Ray'' are spammed energy balls.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Fate, particularly when she becomes his younger sister.
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:When Iris recreates her human body in ''Reflection'', she does so by ripping out tendrils of biomass from Chrono's body (and the squadron of TSAB {{Red Shirt}}s he was with). The process was incredibly painful, but was fortunately non-lethal]].
* BoomStick: His two Storage Devices [=S2U=] and Durandal. It seems that the latter replaces the former as Chrono's regular Device, as Chrono still uses him five months after the GrandFinale of ''A's''. In ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable'', Chrono uses [=S2U=] as his basic Device and Durandal as his Full Drive Device, which becomes a plot point in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny''.
* CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough: Crossing over with WackyParentSeriousChild, he's far more stoic and pragmatic than Lindy.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Amy.
* CombatPragmatist: Chrono is a TrapMaster who never fights fair. He also prefers to appear very late and catch his enemies off guard (and mostly from behind or out of nowhere).
* TheComicallySerious: He claims he called Yuuno "ferret boy" as a joke, though you'd never tell from his tone.
** In the final chapter of the ''A's'' supplementary manga, before the mock battle against the Yagami family begins, he says "For the reputation of the three of us[[note]]Nanoha, Fate and himself[[/note]] within the Bureau command and our two {{Familiar}}s!" He still makes a joke about Yuuno being an actual ferret with a totally serious face.
** Chrono just ignores jokes and he continues his conversations straight forward.
** He mellows out as an adult, and he still jokes about Yuuno's ferret past.
* CoolStarship: In the season 1 and 2, he is stationed at the Arthra, later he is the captain of the Arthra, and later the captain of another spaceship, the Claudia.
* DarkIsNotEvil: The reason why the Enforcer uniforms are black in the first place was his villain role in ''Lyrical Toy Box''.
* DefrostingIceKing: He mellowed out when he grew up.
* DemotedToExtra: He gets much less action in the movies. He only appears in ''[=StrikerS=]'' as a minor character (not as bad as Yuuno, Lindy, Arf or [[PutOnABus Amy]]) and he has yet to appear in ''[=ViVid=]'' and ''FORCE''.
* DisappearedDad: Clyde Harlaown died in the quest to seal the Book of Darkness when Chrono was only three.
* DontSaySuchStupidThings: Says this word for word to Fate in ''A's'' [[spoiler:[[CloneAngst when she starts questioning if she qualifies as human]].]]
* FlechetteStorm[=/=]ReverseShrapnel: His spell ''Stinger Blade''. Exaggerated with ''Stinger Blade: Execution Shift''.
* {{Foil}}: To Hayate Yagami. The UnskilledButStrong Hayate is the warm and cheerful head of the Yagami family, while the WeakButSkilled Chrono is the cold and stoic officer who is in charge of the Book of Darkness Incident. Their growth makes it more obvious: In private situations, Chrono became more relaxed and he mellowed out; [[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce in duty]], Hayate became dead serious and shows little of her cheerful personality.
* GenerationXerox: Chrono's role as an admiral and the captain of the spaceship Claudia in ''[=StrikerS=]'' is very similar to his mother Admiral Lindy, the captain of the Arthra in ''A's''. In the GrandFinale of the respective seasons, both destroy an ArtifactOfDoom with their spaceships; Lindy with the [[WaveMotionGun Arc-en-ciel]] destroyed the [[spoiler:Automatic Defense Program of the Book of Darkness, also known as Nachtwal]], and Chrono with a fleet of spaceships destroys the [[spoiler:Saint Cradle]].
* GuileHero: In ''A's'', behind the backs of everyone, he secretly investigates [[spoiler:Gil Graham's past and current activities]], revealing a major puzzle of the Book of Darkness Incident.
* HappilyMarried: To Amy in ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Verossa Acous.
* HeyYou: According to Nanoha and Teana, he rather calls people with "hey, you" than by their names.
* IDidntTellYouBecauseYoudBeUnhappy: Chrono deliberately hides the fact that [[spoiler:Fate is a clone]] from Nanoha so she could focus on her fight against Fate. This was purely for Nanoha's benefit as he had already told Amy that [[XanatosGambit Nanoha's victory was inconsequential in the grand scheme of things]].
* IGotBigger: According to Nanoha in ''The Movie 1st's'' audio commentary, he suddenly grew up very quickly after the Precia Testarossa Incident and the Book of Darkness Incident. In ''Reflection'' (which took place two years later after the first two films), he's already the about the size of Amy.
* AnIcePerson: Specializes in temperature manipulation, and the Durandal allows him to freeze targets easily. His most powerful spell is the ice spell ''Eternal Coffin'', an S+ spell which is even optimized by Durandal's specification in freezing magic and Chrono's training in his speciality.
* ImprobableAge: He is a highly trained elite special agent at the age of 14. [[OlderThanTheyLook He doesn't look any older than Nanoha]] in the beginning. By the age of ''twenty'' he becomes an ''Admiral''.
* InSeriesNickname: Lotte calls him "Chrosuke"/"Kurosuke".
* InappropriatelyCloseComrades: He was Amy's commanding officer during at least part of the time that they were dating. In a case of DeliberateValuesDissonance, such things are actually encouraged, since it leads to the next generation of mages being loyal to the TSAB.
* {{Irony}}: Two of them -- in good ways.
** His relationship with Fate in the first season became ironic since ''A's'': When they first met, Chrono injured Fate and Arf had to escape with a bleeding Fate. And when Fate was fighting against six[[note]]seven in TheMovie[[/note]] typhoons, Chrono suggested that the crew should wait until Fate would either lose against the typhoons or ''die'' by exhaustion. A season later, she becomes his little sister.
** Chrono had a hard childhood, losing his father in the age of three and he forced himself to become a strong person. His two children, three years old in ''[=StrikerS=]'', live in a warm family and have a happy childhood.
* JustFriends: With Carim Garcia. Also, with Nanoha and Hayate, but his relationship with the latter two seems not to be as close as with Carim.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Fate in ''A's''. Then they became ''actual'' brother and sister.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: He became an Admiral like his parents, and he gets more or less his mother's role in ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* LimitBreak: ''Eternal Coffin'' in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 45% basic damage in the second game, that is average.
* LuminescentBlush: In the last episode of the first season, when Nanoha says he's a NiceGuy for reassuring her that the bureau will take Fate's circumstances into account.
* MenDontCry: He held his tears back during his father's funeral. And he was only ''three years old''.
* MilitaryBrat: Both of his parents were admirals in the Dimensional Navy and his father died in the line of duty.
* NotSoStoic: Almost always maintains an air of cold professionalism, but he gets flustered whenever someone suggests that he a nice guy, or when Fate calls him "[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseSiblingTerminology Onii-chan]]". And when [[{{Catgirl}} Lieselotte]] [[MarshmallowHell shoves his face between her breasts]] in a hug.
* NumberTwo: He served as his mother's Executive Officer during the first two seasons.
* OfficialCouple: With Amy.
* OlderThanHeLooks: Despite looking as old as nine-year-old Nanoha (probably because that's also how old he seemed in Lyrical Toy Box), he's actually five years older. After the first time-skip, however, he starts looking his age.
** According to Nanoha, he grew up very quickly after the Book of Darkness Incident.
* OppositesAttract: With Amy.
* PragmaticHero: Chrono is not only a CombatPragmatist, he would go so far to let a criminal die if it's the safest way to "catch" the person. When Fate was fighting typhoons, he figured that waiting until she would either win or die was the best option to arrest her.
* PromotedToLoveInterest: Inverted. He was Nanoha's love interest in ''Lyrical Toy Box'', and instead ends up as her brother-in-law in ''Lyrical Nanoha''.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: He and Lindy weren't related in ''Lyrical Toy Box''.[[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope At first glance at least. It's eventually revealed that they are both Mother and Son as in the Lyrical Nanoha continuity.]]]]
* ShotgunWedding: It's all but stated that Amy was already pregnant when they got married.
* SpikesOfVillainy: At one point in the series' development, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_RBghAfiW8 he was going to be a bad guy]]. His Barrier Jacket's spikes are [[MythologyGag the only remnant]] of this.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: To his father Clyde, though Chrono's hair is straighter and darker than his father's.
* SuperCop: He was an Enforcer before he took a command position.
* SurpassedTheTeacher: In ''A's'', Chrono defeats Liesearia and Lieselotte, his combat magic instructors, and explicitly tells them that he has become stronger than both of them. And in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', he beats them again and the twins tell him that they can teach him nothing anymore.
* ThemeNaming: He and his two Storage Devices have three different types of ThemeNaming:
** ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Durandal is the name of the legendary sword of Charlemagne's paladin Roland in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France.
** ShoutOutThemeNaming: [=S2U=]'s name is MythologyGag to the song "Song To You" from ''Lyrical Toy Box'' version of ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha''.
** TemporalThemeNaming: Chrono means "time". This give him FamilyThemeNaming with his adopted sister Fate.
* TrapMaster: His fighting syle in the ''Nanoha'' games. Instead of a stronger projectile attack, Chrono sets-up invisible Delayed Binds that trigger when his opponent flies too close to them.
** This actually is his fighting style in the series, too. That's how he defeated Fate and the Masked Men [[spoiler:alias Liesearia and Lieselotte]]. Nanoha states his fighting style in ''The Movie 1st'' InCharacterCommentary, when she asks Teana if she got a lot of binds when she sparred with Chrono, which Teana confirms.
* VictoryByEndurance: He suggested waiting for Fate to exhaust herself sealing the remaining Jewel Seeds before moving in to capture her, before Nanoha's interference precluded that idea.
* VitriolicBestBuds: See Yuuno's entry above.
* VocalDissonance: He has his child voice in ''Reflection'' despite having already gone through puberty.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: He is far more stoic than his mother, [[TheComicallySerious to an almost hilarious degree]]. Also doubles as a case of CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough.
* WeakButSkilled: As he says, it takes more than power to make a great mage. Chrono's first appearance has him intervening in a fight between Nanoha and Fate, each of whom has substantially more raw magical power than him. He also uses an obscure spell to capture and unmask the masked men in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' [[spoiler:who turn out to be his teachers]]. In the supplementary mangas, he likewise handily defeats Fate in a one-on-one match despite her superior power, although it's implied that she has improved to the point where he has to take her seriously to win.
** In ''VideoGame/TheBattleOfAces'', Chrono can meet his Dark Piece counterpart. After defeating him, Chrono is surprised how weak his enemy was, wondering if he's actually that weak, too.
* XanatosGambit: In season 1, He approves of Nanoha's idea of challenging Fate with all of the Jewel Seeds in their possession at stake because if Nanoha wins, then they can get information from Fate. If Nanoha lost, [[CombatPragmatist then he'll just go on and capture Fate himself since she'll be too worn out to fight him off.]] He even prepared for the fact that if Fate somehow escaped after winning, he would be able to track her down because the Arthra would have analysed her magical signature long enough to locate her.
* YouKilledMyFather: Averted. While he is on the case for dealing with the Book of Darkness, he never shows any desire for revenge against it or it's guardians for his father's death. [[spoiler:And when he's presented with Graham's plan to permanently destroy the Book, he instantly rejects it on both moral and practical grounds.]]

Chrono's mother and TheCaptain of the ''Arthra'' and an admiral. Despite her authority, Lindy is a gentle and easygoing woman, and like Nanoha, would rather talk things out before resorting to force. However, it's implied that she possesses incredible power, suppressing a dimensional tremor by herself. She is responsible for giving Nanoha most of her orders in the original series and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''. She adopts Fate, and serves as the legal guardian for Erio, as Fate was too young to officially do so.
----
* AdaptationSpeciesChange: She was a several inch tall fairy in ''Lyrical Toy Box''. Here, she's a HumanAlien. [[spoiler: She's also implied to be a HumanAlien in Lyrical Toy Box as well, her fairy form is a consequence of not being able to sustain her magic on Earth.]]
* BigGood: In the first and second seasons as she was the highest authority on the ground to advise Nanoha, Fate etc.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: She's the tsukkomi to ''Precia's'' boke in ''INNOCENT''.
* CoolStarship: She's the captain of the Arthra until the epilogue of ''A's'', where Chrono took the role as the captain until he came the captain of the Claudia.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* DemotedToExtra: She has only a few appearances in ''[=StrikerS=]'' and it gets worse in the following seasons.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She had a ponytail in the first two seasons, but changed to a pigtail in the ''A's'' epilogue.
* FacialMarkings: Four light green markings on her forehead.
* FeeFiFauxPas: Drinks her Japanese tea British-style. Nanoha is extremely well-behaved in every other respect, but cannot stop herself from [[http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z82/Glenn_Magus_Harvey/screencaps/nanoha1-8-lindy-tea_zpsda81759f.jpg making]] a face at this while her back is turned. This may be an example of Lindy attempting to emulate Earth customs very, very badly, or else an example of how the TSAB has "borrowed" and mixed various cultures with their own. One possibility is that, knowing a fellow Admiral from England, she attempts to apply the way he drinks his tea to how she drinks Japanese tea.
* GlamorousSingleMother: Lindy managed to balance having a successful career as a military officer with raising her son by herself after the death of her husband, then went onto adopt a second child with severe emotional scars. None of this is ever shown to be a burden for her, and she is never depicted as anything less than a [[GoodParents loving mother]] for the entire run of the series. Of course, the fact that her son was serving on her ship by the time of their introduction probably helped to reduce the workload.
* GoodCounterpart: The movies play up the differences between her and Precia. Both of them are single mothers who suffered the loss of a family member, and Fate views both of them as her mothers. While Preica is caught up in the past and tries to regain what she lost, Lindy moved forward.
* GoodParents: She raised Chrono by herself after the death of her husband. Then she adopted Fate, gave her a warm home, and managed to heal the emotional scars caused by Precia's abuse. Both end up as highly successful well-adjusted people with children of their own. Fate also mentioned in the second ''[=StrikerS=]'' Sound Stage that Lindy was her template for being an ideal mother.
* HerHeartWillGoOn: Clyde died about 11 years before the events of the first season, and it's clear that she has long since come to terms with his death.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Letty in the main series, with ''Precia'' in the ''INNOCENT'' continuity.
* HiddenDepths: According to the ''Magical Girl Fatal Fate'' one-shot, she watches, or at the very least is aware of, magical girl anime, since she had Fate watch some of them in between the original series and ''A's''.
* MamaBear: [[spoiler: Protects Fate from Levi when the latter was about to deal a killing blow during their battle in ''Reflection'', getting a gash across her back in the process. [[NewParentNomenclatureProblem This act is what finally allows Fate to call her "mother"]].]]
* MarriedToTheJob: Lindy is dedicated to her job, but it's not depicted as a bad thing, unlike many examples of this trope (for one thing, it's rather easy to still connect with your son when you're his ''commanding officer''). She is very devoted to her family and always makes time for them, even taking leave so she could help Fate settle into her new life.
* AMotherToHerMen: Given the fact that her son serves as her second in command, the line between "mother" and "captain" can be somewhat blurred for her.
* MythologyGag: Her [[PowerGivesYouWings fairy wings while using her powers]], as a reference to ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'', in which she was Nanoha's FairyCompanion. The [[AllThereInTheManual manual]] explains that these wings are due to her using mana transmitted from ''Arthra'''s main reactor to supplement her own energy pool. Specifically, they're excess mana radiating off of her.
* OccidentalOtaku: Lindy is something of a Japanophile. She drinks green tea (incorrectly), has a room on her ship set up to look like a Japanese garden (complete with a shishi-odoshi), and is aware of MagicalGirl Anime. The second movie ramps it up when she's shown unpacking a paper lantern, a tengu mask, a sai, a teapot, a wall scroll, and a log with shuriken embedded in it. She even moves to Japan full-time after the events of ''A's'' (though it was more for Fate's sake than her own).
* OlderThanSheLooks: Doesn't age much between ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''.
** Becomes a grandmother by ''[=StrikerS=]'', and still doesn't age much.
* PowerGivesYouWings: Has fairy wings when using her magical powers in the first season.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Scolds Nanoha and Yuuno for disobeying orders, but lets them off without punishment because they did well.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: In ''Lyrical Toy Box'', she was just Nanoha's FairyCompanion and had no relation to Chrono.[[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope At first glance at least. It's eventually revealed that they are both Mother and Son as in the Lyrical Nanoha continuity.]]]]
* StayWithTheAliens: Inverted. She moved her family to Earth after ''A's'' so Fate could stay with her friends (that, and she's a Japanophile).
* SweetTooth: She takes her tea with milk and ''four'' sugars. [[FeeFiFauxPas Green tea, that is.]]
* TeenPregnancy: She was only 17 when she gave birth to Chrono. [[OlderThanTheyLook Over 20 years later, she still looks about the same.]]
* ThoseTwoGirls: Together with ''Precia'' in ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent [=INNOCENT=]]]''.
* TrademarkFavoriteDrink: Green tea, with milk and sugar cubes please! Mary and later Ginga are persuaded to drink it this way.
* WaveMotionGun: The Arthra has a weapon called ''Arc-en-ciel'', which could have destroyed a fair chunk of Japan's landmass had it been fired at the surface. Firing it even follows the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-man_rule Two-Man Rule]] and requires authorization by the highest authorities, heightening the similarities. Lindy used it to destroy [[spoiler:Nachtwall, the Automatic Defense Program of the Book of Darkness]].

An officer on the ''Arthra'' who is relatively playful, in contrast to the highly serious Chrono. Seven years after the Precia Testarossa Incident and the Book of Darkness Incident, she and Chrono marry and she gives birth to fraternal twins, Karel and Liera. Amy has retired from her duty to become a full-time mother.
----
* BathtubBonding: Fate notes in the first ''A's'' Sound Stage that Amy was the only person she had ever taken a bath with before, which helps to underline her CoolBigSis status.
* BestFriendsInLaw: Fate had already considered her to be [[CoolBigSis an older sister]] even before she started dating Chrono (or before Fate was even adopted into the Harlaown family, for that matter). Likewise, Fate's own relationship with Nanoha means that her friendship with Miyuki also qualifies.
* BridgeBunnies: Amy's not actually on the bridge, though she still fits.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Chrono.
* CombatCommentator: In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent [=INNOCENT=]]]'', though Alicia and Precia steal most of her parts.
* CoolBigSis: She takes on this role for Fate at the end of the first season, with Chrono pointing out in the third ''A's'' Sound Stage that she basically ''is'' Fate's older sister. It becomes an even more literal example during the TimeSkip when they become in-laws.
* DitzyGenius: Ties a bow in Chrono's bandages, and when sending a message to Nanoha and Fate in the first Megami Sound Stage, instead of making comments on the characters and the story, asks them to pick up supplies. Nevertheless, she's a highly competent officer and is a master in gathering information.
* HappilyMarried: To Chrono in ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* IdiotHair: Will not stay down despite repeated attempts by Chrono to spray it.
* InappropriatelyCloseComrades: Chrono was her commanding officer during at least part of the time that they were dating, though she retired from the TSAB to raise their children after they got married.
* MissionControl: Her job on the Arthra. Also in ''VideoGame/TheBattleOfAces''.
* MsExposition: In the first two seasons, where she explains some events or other stuff like the Cartridge System. Also in ''VideoGame/TheBattleOfAces'', along with Reinforce Eins and Lindy.
* OfficialCouple: With Chrono.
* OppositesAttract: She and [[TheStoic Chrono]] get married.
* PutOnABus: After ''A's'', she is never seen again, except her few and early appearances in the ''[=StrikerS=]'' manga and ''[=StrikerS=]'' Sound Stage 1. She retired from the TSAB to become a full-time mother.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Nanoha and Yuuno. She asks Yuuno how things are progressing with him and Nanoha in the DistantFinale of ''A's'' and the early part of the ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' manga at the same time, and seems disappointed that their relationship has not changed. She just supports the [[LesYay wrong ship]].
** There's also a few scenes where she ships [[MythologyGag Nanoha and Chrono]], although she might have been doing it to tease Chrono.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Amy or Eimy? Don't start with her maiden name.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Downplayed, but her children look a lot like her.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Briefly, in one episode of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''.

* AmbiguouslyRelated: Whether or not he's Nanoha's full sibling or half sibling (like in ''Triangle Heart 3'') is never specified.
* CovertPervert: Hinted to be quite a big one at the audio dramas, as a Jewel Seed, which acts based on the desires of those who come into contact with it, turns into a water monster that tries ripping off girls' swimsuits.
* DemotedToExtra: He was the hero in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3''. In ''Nanoha'', he only has a few appearances, and only in the first two seasons.

Nanoha's older sister who may or may not be her cousin, as she was ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3SweetSongsForever''. A high school student in the original series. She's quite fond of petting Yuuno.
----
* AffectionateNickname: She calls Kyouya "Kyou-chan."
* AmbiguouslyRelated: Her exact relationship to the rest of the family is somewhat blurry. She's definitely Nanoha's relative, though whether or not they're biologically sisters or Miyuki is her cousin who was adopted into the family is up for debate (especially in light of Misato finally making the jump from the ''Triangle Heart'' continuity in the ''Reflection'' manga). Interestingly enough, while Nanoha calls her siblings [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseSiblingTerminology "Onii-chan" and "Onee-chan"]], Miyuki calls Kyouya "Kyou-chan" rather than addressing him as a brother.
* BestFriendsInLaw: With Amy, due to their little sisters (well, sister-in-law in Amy's case) being in a relationship.
* CoolBigSis: To Nanoha. In the first season, she helped encourage her while she was just training.
* DemotedToExtra: Somewhat less so than the other members of the family besides Nanoha, as she becomes friends with Amy in the sound stages, but she's still virtually gone after ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''.
* HeirToTheDojo
* {{Muggle}}
* OlderThanTheyLook: She still looks 17 during her cameo in ''[=ViVid=]'' even though she's in her thirties.

Nanoha's mother, who runs a cafe called the Midori-ya together with her husband Shirou.
----
* AbsurdlyYouthfulMother: In ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'', she wasn't neither Kyoya's nor Miyuki's mother. If she's the biological mother of both them in the ''Nanoha'' continuity, she must be 14 when Kyoya was born, and 16 when Miyuki's was born, and 24 when Nanoha was born.
** Tsuzuki Masaki, the series creator, received a question regarding this by the webclap message of his personal website on 2004/10/23. He avoided giving a direct answer but simply replied that "Shirou-papa is not a {{Lolicon|AndShotacon}}." Perhaps this hints at Kyoya and Miyuki not being Momoko's biological children, in accordance with ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'' continuity.
* HappilyMarried: Nanoha mentions in the first episode that she and Shirou still act like newlyweds.
* {{Muggle}}: The only member of her entire family (whether by birth, marriage, or adoption) who, regardless of continuity, is completely normal. She mentions in the ''Reflection'' manga that this made it a lot harder for her (compared to her husband and elder children) to accept the existence of magic until she saw it firsthand.
* MumLooksLikeASister: Due to her not showing any signs of aging at any point in the franchise, she could easily pass as her daughter's twin come ''[=ViVid=]''. Hell, she could pass as her ''granddaughter's'' twin when the latter is in her OlderAlterEgo.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She already looked fairly youthful in the first season, but after several {{Time Skip}}s she shows up at the beginning of ''[=ViVid=]'' and still looks like she's in her late twenties despite being forty-seven. Teana even commented on her youthful looks when she met her for the first time in the first ''[=StrikerS=]'' Sound Stage.
* OpenMindedParent: Fairly understanding about letting Nanoha go away for several days in season 1. Also didn't even blink when Lindy explained the situation, and nonchalantly greets her 19-year old daughter in the ''Sound Stage'' when she stops by to visit with her students after moving to another planet/dimension.
-->'''Students:''' "[[NoHeroToHisValet Her mom treats Nanoha-san like she's a normal girl]]!"
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Nanoha looks very much like her in scenes where she lets her hair down.
* SweetBaker: Momoko is a baker by trade and an epitome of the GoodParents trope. She is strongly implied to be Nanoha's main role-model and the main reason why her daughter is both [[HumbleHero so selflessly heroic and so down-to-earth]].

Nanoha's father, who is alive in this version but quit his bodyguard job after being hospitalized for a long time. He owns and works at the Midori-ya cafe, but also coaches a kids soccer team.
----
* ActionDad: Formerly, he retired about six years before the series began.
* BadassNormal: Was a skilled bodyguard and, if going by ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'' continuity is correct, was born into a powerful {{Samurai}} family, before his near fatal accident caused him to retire and open the Midori-ya café.
* ChefOfIron: He used to be a bodyguard before running Midori-ya cafe.
* CoveredInScars: In episode 3, while Shirou is in the bath, his upper arms are shown to be covered in knife/sword wounds and you can clearly see a bullet wound near his heart. And those are just the scars the audience gets to see.
* HappilyMarried: See Momoko's entry above.
* {{Muggle}}
* OlderThanTheyLook: Much like his wife, he still looks fairly young during his cameo in ''[=ViVid=]'' despite being 51.
* OpenMindedParent: Like his wife.
* RealMenWearPink: Bodyguard turned pastry chef.
* RetiredBadass: A former bodyguard. And in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'', he was born into a powerful {{Samurai}} family.
* ScarsAreForever: Got ''really'' scarred from a job-related incident that left him hospitalized for a while.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: He is alive in ''Nanoha'' but dead in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'', since the mentioned incident killed him instead of causing him injuries... when Momoko was pregnant with Nanoha. Ouch.
** This incident seemed to happen a few years later, as Nanoha was a small child when it happened in this continuity.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Kyouya looks like a younger version of him.
* SupremeChef: Such a good pastry chef that, after retirement, he makes a living out of his cooking.
** In ''INNOCENT'', Nanoha mentions that at Midori-ya her mother makes pastry while her father brews coffee. While the assigned work of the couple might be different in the canon continuity, it still serves to showcase Shirou's skills as a barista.

One of Nanoha's schoolfriends. Alisa has the honor of being the first person to be on the receiving end of a Nanoha befriending, when Nanoha hit her for bullying Suzuka. She got better soon, thankfully. In the first season, she saves a wounded Arf who later sees a savior in her.

Outside the main continuity, she is one of the five main characters in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaINNOCENT''.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: In ''INNOCENT'', Alisa's hair is illustrated with a more reddish tone. She's still blond, but her reddish blond hair fits her [[PlayingWithFire fire element]] better.
* AdaptationNameChange: From Alisa Lowell in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'' to Alisa Bannings in ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha''.
* AngerBornOfWorry: In season 1 she gets mad at Nanoha for clamming up about her feelings and for being distant and refuses to talk to her. However, when alone with Suzuka, she admits that she is just frustrated that Nanoha wont tell them what is on her mind and Alisa is clearly just worried for her friends wellbeing.
* AscendedExtra: She, Suzuka and Alicia become main characters in ''INNOCENT'' where they even get their MagicalGirl forms.
** Doubly so, considering the fact that in ''Triangle Heart'' Alisa Lowell, her namesake, [[spoiler: was a minor [[CuteGhostGirl ghost]] with tragic past who becomes friends with Nanoha before moving on to the afterlife.]]
* BigFriendlyDog: [[CatDogDichotomy Suzuka has cute kitties. Alisa has huge puppies.]] She even briefly takes in an injured Arf (in wolf form) after finding her by the road side one night.
* BullyTurnedBuddy: She used to bully Suzuka, until [[DefeatMeansFriendship Nanoha slapped that attitude out of her]]. [[ThoseTwoGuys They're basically inseperable by the time the series starts]], and supplemental material shows that their friendship is still going strong ten years later in college.
* CatDogDichotomy: The Dog to Suzuka's cats.
* ChildhoodFriends: She had already been friends with Nanoha and Suzuka for years before the first season started. Fate and Hayate also qualify by the time of the TimeSkip.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Holds the dubious honor of being the first person Nanoha "befriended"[[note]]At least in this universe. In Triangle Heart 3, Chrono had that dubious honor for himself[[/note]], to stop her from bullying Suzuka.
* DumbBlonde: Averted. She has excellent grades.
* ElementalWeapon: She has a fiery whip in ''[=INNOCENT=]''.
* FlamingSword: Flame Eyes, her Device in ''[=INNOCENT=]''.
* GirlishPigtails: Until she cuts her hair.
* GratuitousEnglish: The English dub [[KeepItForeign features]] GratuitousJapanese. Actually mostly averted in the original Japanese version of the anime – despite her apparent western heritage, she only speaks Japanese (except for shouting "be quiet" at a noisy dog in the very first episode).
* HairContrastDuo: With the purple haired Suzuka.
* InterclassFriendship: She's and {{Ojou}} and Nanoha is middle class.
* {{Jerkass}}: Before [[DefeatMeansFriendship becoming friends]] with Nanoha and Suzuka, notes that she didn't care at all about how other people felt, prompting Nanoha to slap her for taking Suzuka's ribbon to show her what pain is like.
* MuggleBestFriend: To Nanoha, Fate and Hayate.
* {{Ojou}}: She lives in a BigFancyHouse with huge dogs, and she has a butler who is also her chauffeur with a limousine.
* OnlySaneWoman: In ''[=INNOCENT=]''.
* OnlySixFaces: Her post-TimeSkip [[http://i.imgur.com/do3QdMr.jpg design]] is basically Shamal with darker hair and smaller earrings.
* PhenotypeStereotype: She's the only major westerner among the cast, and she has blonde hair. This only applies to her, as her parents are both dirty blondes, and Gil Graham's natural hair color is never specified (the flashback to his childhood had a sepia tone).
* PlayingWithFire: In ''[=INNOCENT=]''.
* ReformedBully: She used to bully Suzuka when they were younger, but Nanoha slapped that attitude out of her (giving her the honor of being the first person to be befriended in canon).
* BlueOniRedOni: Red Oni to Suzuka's Blue.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Nanoha and Fate in ''[=INNOCENT=]''.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:Her ''Triangle Heart 3'' counterpart was a ghost.]]
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it Arisa, Alisa or Alyssa? Bannings or Bunnings? In ''The Movie 2nd A's'', she wrote "Ari''ss''a" on one of Fate's [=CDs=]. Then ''INNOCENT'' mobile game used "Arisa Bunnings" for their card illustrations, further complicating the problem. The official subtitles in the Japanese Blu-ray movie releases use "Bunnings" for her and her parents, although it should be noted that Bannings and Bunnings would both be written and pronounced the same way in Japanese. The same subtitles confusingly call her "Alisa" in the first movie and "Arisa" in the second.
* ThoseTwoGirls: Together with Suzuka.
* TinyTyrannicalGirl
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to Suzuka.
* {{Tsundere}}: It's Creator/RieKugimiya... [[PigeonholedVoiceActor need we explain more]]? In episode 6 of season 1, she gets upset with Nanoha for not confiding in her, but despite that, is the first to volunteer to copy her notes for her. 679
Outside the main continuity, she is one of the five main characters in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaINNOCENT''.
----
* AscendedExtra: She, Alisa and Alicia become main characters and [[MagicalGirl Magical Girls]] in ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]''.
* BadassNormal: She beat Fate in dodgeball in the ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' manga. Sure it's dodgeball, but she ''did'' reverse Fate's undodgeable attack and knock her out.
* BarrierWarrior: In ''INNOCENT'', she can create ice barriers. She is also more a defensive type.
* BestFriendsInLaw: With Nanoha, though it's unknown if Shinobu and Kyoya ever got married. By extension, Fate also applies due to [[WordOfGay her own relationship]] with Nanoha.
* BookDumb: Her best grades are below average and she's only good in P.E.
* CatDogDichotomy: The cat to Alisa's dogs.

Suzuka caught the ball and [[CatchAndReturn lobbed it back UP at Fate so hard that it knocked her out.]]
** Likely a reference to the fact that in ''VisualNovel/TriangleHeart3'', Suzuka's older sister is a [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampire]], and presumably Suzuka is as well.
* ChildhoodFriends: She had already been friends with Nanoha and Arisa for years before the first season started. Fate and Hayate also qualify by the time of the TimeSkip.
* DudeMagnet: Arisa mentions in the first ''[=StrikerS=]'' Sound Stage that a lot of guys at their university are attracted to her.
* EverybodyHatesMathematics: Unlike Nanoha, Fate and Alisa, she gets below average grades in mathematics, although her language grades are also mediocre.
* FantasticallyIndifferent: She never questions about Hayate's family, even Hayate knows that her own family looks suspicious.
* HairColorDissonance: Suzuka's purple hair might just be [[PurpleIsTheNewBlack representing a different shade of black]], which isn't uncommon among purple-haired characters.
* HairContrastDuo: With the blonde Arisa.
* AnIcePerson: In ''INNOCENT''.
* InterclassFriendship: She's and {{Ojou}} and Nanoha is middle class.

* MuggleBestFriend: To Nanoha, Hayate and Fate.
* {{Ojou}}: She lives in a BigFancyHouse with a lot of cats, and she has two personal maids.
* PassionateSportsGirl: Suzuka is the best girl/student, in P.E. Her motivation for sports surpasses even Alisa's passion to surpass Fate in every subject.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue Oni to Alisa's Red.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: In the first ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' Sound Stage, Shamal notes Suzuka has become quite a beauty.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Nanoha and Fate in ''INNOCENT''.
* ShrinkingViolet: Particularly before she became friends with Nanoha and Alisa.
* ThoseTwoGirls: Together with Alisa. However, she has a single role in ''A's'' as Hayate's first friend.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The girly girl to Alisa, although interestingly enough, she's good at sports but merely average in academics.
* TomboyishPonytail: In ''INNOCENT'', when she is in her Barrier Jacket.
* TrickedOutGloves: Snow White, her Device in ''INNOCENT''.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her arranging a surprise Christmas visit for Hayate leads Nanoha and Fate to see the Wolkenritter with Hayate, when they are trying desperately to keep Hayate's status as their mistress secret. A fight ensues, and things get worse from there because of outside interference.
* WrenchWench: It's mentioned in the very first episode that she's interested in perusing a job in engineering, which makes sense given that her family owns companies in both heavy industry and construction.
