!Yoshimori Sumimura
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/65397_7194.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiroyukiYoshino (Japanese, teenager), Creator/RyokoShiraishi (Japanese, child), Creator/VicMignogna (English, teenager), Creator/CindyRobinson (English, child)

The main male protagonist. A 14-year-old middle school boy at the beginning of the story, Yoshimori is the 22nd Kekkaishi of the Sumimura family. Throughout the series, Yoshimori is portrayed as a lazy, stubborn, headstrong individual who strives to protect his family and friends, especially Tokine, his childhood crush.
----
* BarrierWarrior: Shield and club, really.
* BerserkButton: Don't hurt his friends. Especially Tokine.
* BrattyHalfPint: As a child, he was rather stubborn and didn’t exactly care about his role as the next Kekkaishi. That all changed following the incident where Tokine gets her scar.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He gets worked up often over minor things, and is a little too preoccupied with cake, but he's good at making Ayakashi explode.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He and Tokine have known each other all their lives and it's extremely obvious he has a crush on her. [[spoiler: While nothing is confirmed, evidence proves that they did become a couple.]]
* TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong: The early parts of the series really love to browbeat the guy despite him trying to put his all into what he does, juggling his daily life with his duties as a Kekkashi and it being pretty stressful. Granted sometimes it's justified (he tends to favor force over finesse and that can lead into some bone-headed decisions), but more often than not it seems everyone gets on his case for no reason other than him simply doing something that they don't agree with (Making cakes as a hobby, him not knowing certain things, a technique going wrong because someone interrupted him, etc).
* DeclarationOfProtection: Yoshimori has sworn to protect Tokine no matter what, and it's his main motivation for getting stronger.
* {{Determinator}}: Boundless energy and drive is his greatest strength. It's pointed out by his Madarou.
* EverybodyHasStandards: Yoshimori usually doesn't involve himself in other people's personal life, especially romantic issues. However, when a girl from his school gave a LoveConfession to Gen, the latter coldly brushed off her declaration, Yoshimori called him out for being unnecessarily hurtful. He tells Gen that the latter didn't have to return the girl's feelings but could've let her down in a gentler manner.
* FailureKnight: When Yoshimori was a kid, he hated being a Kekkaishi and put no effort in his training. Yoshimori's attitude greatly changed, however, after Tokine's arm was injured by an ayakashi that Yoshimori failed to eliminate. Ever since then, he swore to never let Tokine be hurt like that ever again.
* HairTriggerTemper: It doesn't take much to set him off. It's especially noticable next to the much more serene Tokine.
* HotBlooded: Compared to the rest of the kekkaishi, anyway.
* HiddenDepths: Likes to make cakes in his spare time much to Tokine's annoyance since she thinks he should focus more on training. [[spoiler: After Gen dies, he puts his cooking utensils away to strengthen his powers, which surprises Tokine and makes her realize [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness that he's actually getting serious]].]]
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Inverted, "A lion boils even a rabbit with all its strength!" He goes all out, even on puny Ayakashi. Also literally inverted, as it was revealed during his training with [[spoiler: Hazama Tokimori]] that the reason his accuracy sucks is that he actually ''is'' left handed, but had been using his right hand to make his barriers all this time.
* IdiotHero: Somewhat. In most series he'd probably be considered a fairly smart fighter; he just stands out here because everyone else fights very intelligently and he tends to fight through instinct and pure power too often. His older brother and [[WeakButSkilled Tokine]] are the major foils.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler:He blames himself for being able to save Gen, and uses this as his motivation for revenge.]]
* LikesOlderWomen: Yoshimori likes older girl Tokine. Later in the manga, he saves another girl of similar age from a high fall and she briefly becomes his StalkerWithACrush. This has led to others accusing him of preferring older girls. It’s a bit of a DownplayedTrope as Tokine is only two years older than him.
* LiterallyLovingThyNeighbor: His crush Tokine is his next-door neighbor.
* MaleMightFemaleFinesse: Yoshimori has always fallen behind Tokine in terms of speed and accuracy. However, in terms of sheer power and stamina, Yoshimori excels.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Or coffee flavored milk.
* MyGreatestFailure:
** Allowing Tokine to be injured because of his own mistakes.
** [[spoiler: Later, the death of Gen.]]
* TheNapoleon: Doesn’t exactly love being called short. Noticeably, in the dub, they cast Creator/VicMignogna as Yoshimori, who’s best known for voicing [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist a certain other character who hates being called short.]]
* SingleTargetSexuality: Yoshi has only had eyes for only one girl: [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Tokine]].
* SittingOnTheRoof: He has a favorite spot to nap and everything.
* SweetTooth: All those cakes....
* TripleShifter: Between being a kekkaishi, student and son at home
* UnskilledButStrong: He has ridiculous amounts of power, but bad aim and form.
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler: Once from Tokine for intentionally getting captured by Kokuboro, forcing his allies to endanger themselves to rescue him, and from Tokiko, minus a slap, for trying to save the school from an Ayakashi swarm with a technique he had NO IDEA how to use and probably would have ended up killing everyone. He also gave this to Tokine for recklessly killing a minor land god and getting herself put into prison without thinking of the people she left behind, mainly himself.]]

!Tokine Yukimura
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/TokineYukimura_6994.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Rie Saitou (Japanese), Creator/LauraBailey (English)

The female protagonist. She is Yoshimori's childhood friend, neighbor and love interest. Her family are also Kekkaishi and have a long-time rivalry with the Sumimura family. However, she works together with Yoshimori to exterminate ayakashi.
----
* ActionGirl: Strikes down Ayakashi every night.
* BarrierWarrior: Part of her CharacterDevelopment is shifting from standard barriers to daggers that hold Ayakashi in place because this better reflects her natural skills.
* BrainyBrunette: She's highly intelligent.
* CombatPragmatist: Observe the enemy, find any weaknesses, and then bring them down at the first opportunity.
* DisappearedDad: Her dad dies pre-series.
* LadyOfWar: She's precise with her moves and does them with grace.
* MaleMightFemaleFinesse: What Yoshimori has in brute force and stamina, Tokine has in accuracy, speed and precision.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler: The manga ends with her and Yoshimori having a little moment, but nothing confirms if they really did get together.]]
* NiceGirl: A generally polite and favorable person. It's little wonder Yoshimori has a crush on her.
* ScarsAreForever: Has one on her hand after protecting Yoshimori from a demon.
* {{Tsundere}}: Mild version. Alternates between fanship fodder moments with Yoshimori, treating him as a coworker/classmate, treating him like a kid brother, treating him like an ''annoying'' kid brother, beating him up for annoying her, and beating him up [[AngerBornOfWorry while crying her eyes out for worrying her]], then playing the trope as straight as possible by beating him up while trying to apologize to him.
* WeakButSkilled: She doesn't have Yoshimori's endless energy or sheer power but she has far greater accuracy and skill in manipulating Kekkai. The logical conclusion is that her signature style switches from giant Kekkai that she implodes around Ayakashi to small, thin Kekkai that she uses to stab them and hold them in place. In the final arcs, she can literally run through any spirit world, obstacles and all. And we mean ''through''.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's terrified of cockroaches. Probably not helped by the bug Ayakashi that scarred her hand as a child, but fear of cockroaches also runs in the family.
* YamatoNadeshiko: The rest of the school thinks she is. [[LadyOfWar The main characters and her best friend know better.]] However, she does perform tea ceremonies with her grandmother in traditional clothing.

!Shigemori Sumimura
[[quoteright:238:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/238px-Shige_2192.JPG]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Youhei Tadano (Japanese), Creator/{{David Lodge|AmericanActor}} (English, old), Creator/PatrickSeitz (English, young)
----
* BarrierWarrior: He can make Kekkai too.
* CoolOldGuy: A loud OldSoldier with EinsteinHair.
* {{Expy}}: He looks like a fusion of [[VideoGame/MegaManClassic Dr. Wily]] and [[Manga/FairyTail Makarov]].
* GenerationXerox: Subtract the cake fascination and he was just like Yoshimori at his age.
* OldMaster: When the Ayakashi become too much for the kids to handle, he steps in. He taught his grandson how to do slay them in the first place.
* SitcomArchnemesis: Tokiko. They bicker every morning.

!Tokiko Yukimura
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Tokikko_Kekkaishi_1707.jpeg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MayumiTanaka (Japanese), Creator/BarbaraGoodson (English, old), Creator/LauraBailey (English, young)
----
* AbsurdlyYouthfulMother: In the flashbacks before the series begins, she’s 65 and has an 11 year old granddaughter, meaning she couldn’t have been that old when she had Tokine’s father.
* BarrierWarrior: She can make kekkai too.
* CoolOldLady: She is both wise and mischievous.
* GenerationXerox: As a teenager, she was just as aloof and focused as her granddaughter. She's grown mischievous in her old age.
* IWasQuiteALooker: When she was her granddaughter's age, she had her granddaughter's beauty.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Yoshimori can't keep up with her. It's also stated that she is stronger than Shigemori.
* SitcomArchnemesis: Shigemori. She sprays him with a hose.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Like her granddaughter, Tokiko is terrified of cockroaches.

!Toshimori Sumimura
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/200px-Toshi3_9184.JPG]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Miyuki Kawasho (Japanese), Creator/DorothyEliasFahn (English)
----
* DeadpanSnarker: His older brother's antics provide plenty of fuel for sarcasm.
* DissonantSerenity: Due to his older brother's frequent quarrels with their grandfather, living in the Sumimura house is somewhat hectic, but he and his father rarely take notice.
* SatelliteCharacter: He doesn't really stand out compared to his older brothers.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: He takes after his dad.

!Tokimori Hazama
[[quoteright:196:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1285490_e_4922.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/JinYamanoi (Japanese), Creator/TravisWillingham (English)
----
* TheAce: He has beat down god class spirit with ease.
* FluffyTamer: Tamed monsters so well that they still serve his apprentices' families centuries later.
%%* IntangibleMan
%%* LukeIAmYourFather: For Chushinmaru.
%%* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: His reaction to [[spoiler: what his spells did to Chushinmaru.]]
%%* ShroudedInMyth
%%* StarCrossedLovers

!Sumiko Sumimura
----
* TheAce: She is pretty much the strongest kekkaishi in the series. Even [[spoiler: Tokimori Hazama]] acknowledged that she is on whole other level even when compared to himself.
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''umiko '''S'''umimura.
* DissonantSerenity: She is very calm even when talking about [[spoiler: sealing herself inside Chuushinmaru's seal, which is basically a death sentence since there is no way out one the seal is complete.]] In fact, it is possible that she has a mild case of empathy deficit disorder, given how she stated that she had trouble understanding what the people around her feel.

%%* AntiHero
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: As the leader of the night troops, as well as the 6th seat on the heads of the Shadow Organization
* BadPowersGoodPeople: He mastered the [[ThePowerOfHate Zekkai]], which runs off of rejecting the world around you. He's still one of the heroes of the story.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: His story in the Shadow Organization is just as important as Yoshimori's adventures.
* LegendaryCarp: His partner, Kurohime, is a giant black koi that swims through the air.
* TheLeader: of the Night Troops. He's either Type Charismatic or Mastermind; his troops seem to like him but he often acts as a heroic mastermind to counter the more villainous elements in the Shadow Organization.
* GoodIsNotNice: He has well-intentions but he works for the Shadow Organizatin.
* ManipulativeBastard: It's necessary to counter the villainous aspects of the Shadow Organization.
* SupportingLeader: He leads troops against the director's army. He then [[spoiler: kills both the director and his brother]].
%%* TokenGoodTeammate: For the Shadow Organization.

!Gen Shishio
[[quoteright:269:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/199px-Gen-hand_5750.jpg]]

%%* AntiHero
* BlankWhiteEyes: His full form, initially.
* CharacterDeath: [[spoiler:Impaled by Kaguro.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Was bullied and abused by his brothers, and nearly killed most of his family.

* GoodCostumeSwitch: When he finally gets his full form under, it has human like pupils instead of BlankWhiteEyes
* HalfHumanHybrid: Half Ayakashi.
* HealingFactor: As a half ayakkashi, he has one. This is greatly enhanced by Karasumori
%%* LonersAreFreaks
* PowerLimiter: His tattoo, which burns him if he starts trying to overuse his Ayakashi powers.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:He was KilledOffForReal just when it looked like he would form a trio with the others.]]
%%* SugarAndIcePersonality
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: His Full form initially [[spoiler: the only time he has control of it completely is just before his death]]
%%* TallDarkAndSnarky
* WolfMan: His Ayakashi form is that of a humanoid wolf.

!Sen Kagemiya

----
* BerserkButton: He's not happy to be compared to a woman.
* DudeLooksLikeALady:

%%* HandsomeLech

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Can be alternatively spelled ''Z''en.
* {{Telepathy}}: Limited by several things. Kekkaishi and possibly some other ability users block it and even detect or interfere with it. It also provokes a red right hand in the form of his eyes flashing demonic when he uses it. This is worse than it sounds as he needs to be close for it to work. Lastly, Zen is afraid that he will be ostracized even by the other Yagyou if they find out he is able to read their minds, so he does his best to conceal his ability, even when he has information that he [[KeepingSecretsSucks desperately would like to share]].

The co-founder and supreme commander of The Shadow Organization.
----
* AbelAndCain: You might think [[spoiler:Yumeji/Tsukihisa]] is the Abel to his Cain at first. [[spoiler: Turns out, in comparison, Tsukihisa is much, much worse than Nichinaga could ever be.]]
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:When his real motivations and the circumstances were revealed, it was VERY difficult not to feel sorry for him.]]
%%* BigBad
* DimensionLord: After Okuni's death, Nichinaga took possession of her seashell pendant, which she appeared to use as a focus for some of her techniques. He has been seen using the eye-shaped portals Okuni commonly used for viewing.
* EnfantTerrible/ EvilOldFolks: He's both a scary brat and an old man at the same time. [[MakesSenseInContext It's complicated]].

%%* EvilVersusEvil: With his brother.
* GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler:Both Nichinaga and his brother are able to forcibly take over the bodies of others, transferring their own minds into a new body. They have survived this way for centuries, taking over other ability users in order to gain a second power. However, repeated use of this ability causes the memory of the user to gradually deteriorate]].
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: When his little brother possesses his favorite minion and sets wheels of plots in motion to make him essentially lose everything again, he remembers, the truth is revealed, and Nichinaga repents with death.]]
* HellishPupils: With two irises in fact, that make him seriously unnerving. It seems to be a trait shared by people with similar powers as him.
* ManipulativeBastard: He masterminds and manipulates events behind the scenes as The King, an aged man, and as his current container, a young boy.
* MassHypnosis: [[spoiler: Uses this to steal the Ougi family's army.]]
* OmnicidalManiac: [[spoiler:His response to his brother's schemes is to '''kill everyone in the orgainzation'''.]]

* SuicideByCop: [[spoiler:He kills himself and his brother by tossing them both into Masamori's Zekkai.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: [[spoiler:To Suigetsu. He loves her, a lot. He just really doesn't show it much until the end.]]
* TakenForGranite: Though rarely seen doing so, Nichinaga could control earth while in the King's body, easily raising protective barriers out of the ground that are capable of regenerating rapidly if damaged.

!!The Council of Twelve
!!Tropes Associated With The Council Of Twelve
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: You must have absolute mastery of supernatural powers in order to be a member. They also are the twelve heads above everyone in the organization; only the Sousui is above them.
* FaceFramedInShadow: A lot of them before they were each revealed.
* KarmaHoudini: Because the anime was cut short, members--especially Ichirou--never got the comeuppance that occurs in the manga.
* TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: Initially they were this, as all of them were shrouded in darkness.
* WeHaveReserves: They have a total lack of regard to the deaths of their men, which infuriates Masamori.

!Juho
[[quoteright:289:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Juuhou_3510.jpg]]

The 12th seat of the group.
----
* BrutalHonesty: Juho is very blunt-spoken.
* FinishingMove: Dragon Hole. Juho draws a hole on the ground and stands upon it, creating a network of smaller holes extending from the main one. He can fire any number of energy pillars, which extend far into the sky, from the holes. The more spiritually powerful the land, the more powerful the effect.
* TakenForGranite: Juho uses earth-based magic which requires him to be in direct contact with the ground. To perform his spells, he essentially aligns himself with the "dragon pulses" of the earth and manipulates that power.

* MalevolentMaskedMan: He wears a fox mask.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Gets the least characterization of the twelve [[spoiler: and then gets killed off after his introduction]].

The 10th seat of the group.
-----
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Tsumugi has a somewhat whimsical nature; he is generally in a good mood and enjoys making small jokes or laughing to himself, but he's one of the twelve for obvious reasons.
* MarionetteMaster: Inanimate objects touched by Tsumugi's hair spring to life and form enormous puppets that do his bidding.

The 9th seat of the group.
-----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: While she has traded her humanity for knowledge in the past, she also values order and the safety of normal humans. [[spoiler:She is also very worried about the danger posed by Karasumori, and requests that the heirs should train in order to better control it.]]
* AmplifierArtifact: She has a shell pendant that she uses to focus her abilities. [[spoiler: It's later used by the Sousui.]]
* AwesomeByAnalysis: She has been shown to be a very observant person on several occasions.
* BadassBookworm: With her vast intelligence and extensive archives, there are few subjects that she's unfamiliar with.
* BlackCloak: Nothing except her eyes are shown.
* DimensionLord: Okuni is able to manipulate dimensions like Kekkaishi, but she uses it in a different way. She is capable of opening eye-shaped portals, which are used for remote viewing, as well as focusing tremendous amounts of power on a target.
* TheHedonist: Okuni lived to discover the truth behind any mystery that caught her attention.
%%* InTheHood
%%* KilledOffForReal
* OffScreenVillainy: It was rumored that in order to be able to learn everything in the world, Okuni attempted several rituals to keep herself from aging and dying.
* RedBaron: The Puzzle Eater.

!Ichirou Ogi
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/210px-OugiI2_5600.JPG]]

The 8th seat of the group.
-----
* ArchNemesis: Masamori's first one in the Shadow Organization. [[ItsPersonal The feeling is mutual.]]
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler: Killed offscreen by his brother, Shichirou, but he's such a jerk that no one mourns when he dies.]]
* BadBoss: Kills his own men in his fight with Masamori.
%%* BlowYouAway
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:He's actually a lump of flesh of seven siblings merged into one body.]]
* CollectiveIdentity: [[spoiler:Ichirou is actually a collection of seven siblings forcibly merged together into one body, with Ichirou as the dominant persona.]]
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:By his own brother, no less.]]
%%* FatBastard
* GreaterScopeVillain: His cooperation with Byaku, which allows Kaguro to gain information to unnerve Gen [[spoiler: (resulting in his death)]] and his subsequent influence over the following events [[spoiler: prior to his death]] make him this.
* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler:Again, ''he is a collection of seven siblings lumped together in one body''.]]
* JerkAss: He kills his own men, and then shifts the blame to Masamori.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Gets killed by his brother.]]
%%* LargeAndInCharge
* ManipulativeBastard: He's the [[TheManBehindTheMan reason Kaguro got the information to unnerve Gen enough via Ichirou's conversation with Byaku]], [[spoiler: leading to his death]]. He's also manipulated other people with little regard to the public if they get caught in the crossfire.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Justified. [[spoiler: It hides the BodyHorror.]]
* SharingABody: [[spoiler:The secret of Ichirou's power is that he's a collection of seven siblings working as one.]]
