''Katamari Damacy'' has an ever-expanding cast of characters, with new Royal Cousins emerging with every new game. Not even the King can keep them all straight!\

The hard-working, five centimeter-tall son of the King and Queen of All Cosmos. Whenever his father [[NiceJobBreakingItHero breaks stuff]], it falls to the Prince to fix things by rolling katamaris, providing the King with the raw materials needed to remake the heavens. (Thankfully, Earth really is full of things, and no matter how many times he revisits an area, everything's replenished itself when he shows up again.) Originally, he was also [[WellDoneSonGuy trying to get his father to acknowledge him]], as the King was disappointed by his small size; by the end of ''Katamari Damacy'', he actually earns the praise he was seeking, and they appear to get along a lot better now (aside from the occasional short jokes).
----
* BadassAdorable: The pint-sized prince is so cute, just like the rest of his cousins. However, he has repeatedly restored all the stars in the sky and saved the world from a black hole on one occasion.
* BizarreAlienBiology: As cute as he is, the way his body works (and by proxy those of his entire family) is pretty strange when you think about it. His nose is angular and a completely different color from his skin; where his neck begins is practically undiscernible; his antenna is a natural appendage of his and not part of his outfit; and his legs, according to WordOfGod, are naturally purple despite his face sporting a tan tone.
* ModestRoyalty: A simple green bodysuit with purple leggings (though, according to WordOfGod, his legs are actually purple and thus he isn't wearing any legwear). The player can, however, [[AndYourRewardIsClothes use presents to dress him up a bit more]].
* PintSizedPowerhouse: This little guy's as small as a coin, yet he's strong enough to roll a Katamari big enough to '''[[BeyondTheImpossible PLUG UP A BLACK HOLE]]'''.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Unless the player chooses a cousin, the Prince is always the one to fix his father's messes by creating katamaris he demands.
* ShelteredAristocrat: Has little knowledge about Earth and all it carries, so he turns to his father to describe everything he rolls up.
* SuperStrength: Considering he and his cousins can roll a katamari big enough to collect entire countries, islands and ''celestial bodies''.
* WellDoneSonGuy: The Prince himself has no dialogue, but the goal of each game is often to simply please his royal father while fixing up his mess, so there's quite a few shades of this.

A highly eccentric, godlike entity and the current ruler of the Great Cosmos, who has an unfortunate tendency to break stuff and shunt the responsibility for fixing it onto Their family. Aside from encouraging them to work faster and "make it bigger", the King himself is pretty laidback... [[GlowingEyesOfDoom unless the Prince or the cousins screw up]].
----
* AbusiveParents:
** If ''Katamari Damacy'' wasn't a comedic game, this trope would be taken more seriously. The King is harsh on his son, leaving the Prince to clean up the messes that ''he caused''. He'll punish the Prince cruelly and unusually if he fails to complete a stage within the allotted timeframe. He does genuinely love his son, but he never fails to insult the Prince if the Katamari isn't up to his strict standards. The second game reveals that his father was also one, who constantly pushed him to be the best, even throwing his second place trophy in the river.
** He's even less charitable to his nieces and nephews; picking them up in the first game has the King nitpick their appearance or character followed by "how disturbing" (or, in Odeko's case, "how very disturbing").
* BewareTheSillyOnes: From the way he talks to the way he dresses, the King is an utter goofball... but he's still the ruler of the entire universe and can be genuinely menacing when he wants to.
* BizarreAlienBiology: Whatever his species is, their heads apparently get longer with age. His head was pill-shaped like his son's when he was a child, but in the game proper, it's a cylinder longer than his shoulder width decked out in various colors. What makes this strange, however, is his face is shaped in a way that it ''looks'' like the cylindrical part of his head is a headdress he wears.
* BoldInflation: Often, but not always with tips or useful information as is usual with this type of dialogue. Most of the time, the King will emphasize words simply because they fit with the theme of a level.
* CampStraight: An imposing married man with a hard-working son, but not afraid to admit he likes flowers, rainbows, and other many colorful things. And of course, the '''''ROYAL RAINBOW!!'''''
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: His dialogue goes to weird places most of the time, either through out-of-place [[AddedAlliterativeAppeal alliterations]], metaphors or just [[WordSaladHumor the weirdest words at the weirdest times]].
* DelinquentHair: Sported a very impressive pompadour in his rebellious teen era, though tragically, most of it got lopped off during a street fight. One stage in ''We ♥ Katamari'' has him reflecting wistfully back upon that period, though he believes that he could never pull one off now.
* ErmineCapeEffect: Rarely ever seen without some form of royal outfit that still makes him look outlandish. ''Katamari Forever'' probably has him at his fanciest.
* EverythingsBetterWithRainbows: His colorful head and many outfits, the multicolored katamaris he grants the Prince and his cousins, and of course the Royal Rainbow to bring them back.
* EyesAlwaysClosed: If the King ever opens them, you know you've managed to genuinely impress him.
* FreudianExcuse: According to ''We ♥ Katamari'', his own father was extremely strict with him when he was younger. However, even if the King of All Cosmos himself still demands a lot from the Prince, he seems less hesitant to demonstrate that he loves him, unlike his father who took longer to do so.
* GagNose: Despite having an otherwise much more normal human face than anyone else, he has a large, triangular orange nose like the rest of the Royal Family.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: If the Prince fails to accomplish the level as told or doesn't finish by the rules. Usually followed by scolding EyeBeams.
* GratuitousEnglish: In the Japanese version, he occasionally peppers his speech with English exclamations. His Japanese voice also has a comically exaggerated American accent. All this despite the fact that, by his own admission, he is still a learner of the language.
* HenpeckedHusband: As tough as he can be, it is said that even ''he'' fears his wife, the Queen.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: At the end of ''Touch my Katamari'', he says that [[spoiler:acting all strict and mean was all an act]].
* ItsAllMyFault: {{Subverted|Trope}} in one of his GameOver [[HaveANiceDeath speeches]].
-->'''King of All Cosmos:''' It is not your fault. It is Our fault for believing in you.
* KingOfAllCosmos: The TropeNamer.
* LoomingSilhouetteOfRage: If the Prince or a cousin fails a mission, the King will tower over then ominously in darkness and berate them for his inadequacy. Often coupled with a scolding barrage of EyeBeams.
* LoveHurts: Both on the giving end by being a demanding father to the Prince, and on the receiving end since his wife is said to get pretty harsh when she's mad at him.
* MikeNelsonDestroyerOfWorlds: Or in this case, destroyer of stars.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: The basis of [[ExcusePlot the plot]] of most of the games.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His eccentric nature and facial design were made in reference to Music/FreddieMercury.
* PanderingToTheBase: The whole reason he created ''We ♥ Katamari''.[[invoked]]
* ParentsAsPeople: The King's relationship with the Prince is... Complicated. As shown in ''We ♥ Katamari'', it's clear he does genuinely love his son, but his [[FreudianExcuse own complicated relationship with his father]] has given him a very skewed perspective on how to be a father; a fact that is sadly TruthInTelevision, as people who were abused by their parents as children are likely to be abusive to their own children when they have kids. Still, it's shown that the King is at least ''trying'' to be a better father than his own father was, as unlike his father, the King is at least willing to give the Prince praise whenever he does do a genuinely good job.
* PimpedOutCape: No matter the game, the King will always have a fancy cape for his outfit.
* PromotedToPlayable: Aside from rolling him as a katamari in ''Beautiful Katamari'', the King of All Cosmos has never been a playable character. That is, until ''[[UpdatedRerelease We ♥ Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie]]'', where he gets his own side campaign where he's played as when he's a child.
* RegalRuff: Wears a very wide one.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He ''tries'' to create Taurus and Ursa Major himself, but when the last cow/bear gets away he gives up and makes the Prince do it for him.
** Played straight in ''Beautiful Katamari''; when he accidentally creates a black hole that threatens to consume the universe, he uses his powers to halt its growth, but not before it consumed a considerable portion of the universe.
* RoyalWe: His main VerbalTic. He tends to break it a lot in the first game (whenever he's genuinely frustrated, he outright says "I" instead of "We"), and sometimes does in the second, but ''always'' uses it from the third one onwards.
* RunningGag: ''So many...'' Best exemplified in how he always provides the ExcusePlot by breaking something.
** In We ♥ Katamari, the Prince will often approach him with a fan's request, to which he will state that they do not have time for such frivolous matters, only to change his mind when the fan compliments him in some way, fixating on it
--->'''King of All Cosmos:''' Huh? Royal Rainbow? Why, when Our tummy is so empty? Ew, no way, Bo-ring...\
'''Fan:''' Your Highness, you're so striking!\
'''King of All Cosmos:''' ... ... ... ... ... ... Striking...\
'''King of All Cosmos:''' Oh We so like rainbows. You must, simply must see it.
* SayItWithHearts: The King tends to add hearts into his dialogue from time to time.
* StealingTheCredit: He'll sometimes act like ''he[='s=]'' the one rolling up katamaris instead of the Prince, just so he can complain about how tired he is.
* UnlimitedWardrobe: The King is wearing something new in every game. In Touch My Katamari, you can unlock even ''more'' clothes for him.
* UnreliableNarrator: The cutscenes detailing his {{Backstory}} in ''We ♥ Katamari'' are stated to be a [[TheMovie Movie]], so it may be an in-universe case of VeryLooselyBasedOnATrueStory. Then there's all the... ''unique'' descriptions he gives of everything the Prince rolls up...
* VerbalTic: Using the RoyalWe, bizarre word choice, and unusual speech patterns.
* VocalDissonance: If you expected the king to have a deep, booming voice befitting the ruler of the entire universe (and his size), [[https://katamaruu.tumblr.com/post/184718452122/we-3-katamari-king-voice you're in for quite a surprise.]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M06aDKSgK5o He even gets to sing a song (vocals start at 1:55).]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: Lack of parental recognition seems to run in the family (e.g, the King and the Prince, Papa and the King)
* YourSizeMayVary: His size changes depending on what mood he's in (and the local atmospheric pressure). This is taken to extremes in Beautiful Katamari, which features a level in which you use the King as a katamari, who at the beginning is only slightly taller than the Prince.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Queen of All Cosmos]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/15d5761f_381d_4b0f_9a97_2a96f3feed2c.png]]

The King's beloved, beautiful, and much-feared wife. ''We ♥ Katamari'' details how they first met. Mainly appears in cutscenes and the ending, aside from those rare levels where you can roll her up...
----
* BewareTheNiceOnes: The King openly admits he's terrified of her. In Beautiful Katamari, The King mentions that The Queen didn't talk to him for two whole days because The King showed her a frog, which jumped on her head and ruined her laundry.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Spurred by a CrashIntoHello, to boot. [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext Her loaf of bread merged with the King's fallen pompadour into the shape of a heart]].
* ModestRoyalty: Compared to her husband.
* OnlySaneWoman: She's shown to be more down-to-Earth than her husband when it comes to maintaining the Great Cosmos. That being said, she's prone to [[NotSoAboveItAll having some ideas of her own with katamaris]].
* OutOfFocus: She's a nonentity in the first game, only appearing at the beginning and end, and only mentioned a couple times by the King (who refers to her as "Mother"). The second game details how she and the King met, which gives her a bit more personality, and ''Forever'' delves a bit into her day-to-day life. But for the most part, she doesn't do anything besides serve as another rare "object" for you to roll up.
* PimpedOutDress: A large white dress, albeit still far simpler in comparison to her husband's outfits.
* PinkMeansFeminine
* TeamChef: Frequently shown baking or with various cookies/candies/other sweets.
* TeamMom: Given that none of the cousins have any of ''their'' parents show up, but some are mentioned...
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Papa (The High King)]]
[[quoteright:214:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8b0ccdd9_46e1_455b_b795_55af4984d72d.png]]

The father of the King of All Cosmos, who lorded over the Great Cosmos before him. Was introduced in ''We ♥ Katamari'' through the dramatic movie retelling of the King's youth. According to said movie, he was extremely harsh on his son, driving him to [[{{Delinquents}} a brief flirtation with delinquency]], but everything worked out in the end. [[spoiler:And [[HeavySleeper he was just sleeping]], anyway.]]

In ''We ♥ Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie'', he oversees the future King's training in several bonus challenges.
----
* AbusiveParents: He pushed his son to be the very best at everything and was a harsh disciplinarian whenever the King fell short in any way, going as far as to toss his son's second-place trophy into the river. It predictably drove a wedge between them for a while [[spoiler:until he fished the King's trophy out of the river at the cost of his health and finally admitted that he was always proud of him]].
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: [[spoiler:Goes back to get the King's trophy that he discarded, secretly being proud but wanting to push his son to be the best. He ends up getting sick, having mucked about in the cold water for too long. His son and his girlfriend (the future Queen) take care of him.]]
* BizarreAlienBiology: Apparently, he only has one arm, which extends directly out of the middle of his chest.
* TheComicallySerious: While much more dour than his son, ''Royal Reverie'' shows that he can be just as quirky in his own right without ever breaking his sober demeanor. In "Ballerina Hunt", for instance, he wants the future King to learn grace and elegance by rolling up swans, only to find none are currently at the zoo... but there are ballerinas. He'll settle for those, even while complaining that they ''pale'' in comparison.
* DramaticEllipsis: In the King's memories, his dialogue is represented this way; rather than giving flowery, meandering speeches like his son, he repeatedly says "...!!", followed by a [[TranslationYes parenthetical translation]] of his words.
* GrandpaGod: Looked very old even when the King was a child, suggesting a bigger age gap between the two than the current King and Prince.
* HeavySleeper: Used for [[spoiler:a sort of DisneyDeath]].
* InadequateInheritor: How he viewed the King when he was only a child.
* KickTheDog: Throwing his son's second-place trophy into the river. [[spoiler:Leads into...]]
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:...TheReveal that he secretly salvaged it later, with the King seeing it on his desk.]]
* LoveHurts: His harsh training and strict demands drove a wedge between him and his son. He wanted the future King to be the absolute best even if it meant being resented. [[spoiler:It's hinted that resentment actually hurt a lot, but that he felt like he was doing what he had to.]]
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: When his son comes in second during a boxing tournament, he silently pitches his trophy into the river before walking away.
* SternTeacher: Only accepts the best from his son. [[spoiler:Though secretly is still proud of him.]]
* TrainingFromHell:
** The cutscenes show him constantly forcing his son to exercise and study well past the point of exhaustion.
** When entering ''Royal Reverie'' for the first time, he bluntly asks if his son is ''playing'' and asserts that he should be rolling katamari instead. If you restart/retry any of the ''Royal Reverie'' stages, he declares that he won't ''allow'' you to quit, declaring that you'll be rolling katamari until you're completely exhausted.
* WellDoneSonGuy: [[spoiler:Finally seems to let up after his son catches him pondering the second-place trophy that he'd secretly fished out of the river.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=RoboKing=]]]
A major character who makes his debut in ''Katamari Forever''. To give the King a little recovery time after getting knocked out cold by a passing meteor, the Prince and several of his Cousins built the [=RoboKing=] so his royal duties wouldn't go neglected. Unfortunately, [=RoboKing=] [[AIIsACrapshoot caused a bit of a mess]]... and, unlike the real King, gets rather depressed and obsessive over his mistakes.
----
* AIIsACrapshoot: Immediately after being activated, he ends up going on a rampage, destroying every star in the sky. Though he does regret his actions afterwards.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's a lot less condescending and full of hot air compared to the King, but fail a level and he'll punish you just as harshly.
* CharacterDevelopment: In the later levels, he starts getting more confident and prone to making {{Badass Boast}}s.
* {{Foil}}: He's everything the King isn't: Insecure, depressed, and withdrawn.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He's extremely insecure and prone to making self-deprecating comments.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Since the King was put into a coma during the beginning of ''Forever'', the Prince and his cousins build him as a replacement King.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: Somehow, the Prince and the cousins built a robot with extreme anxiety issues.
* RobotMe: He's a robot version of the King of All Cosmos.
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[spoiler: Not only did he die, but ''you'' murdered him. He shows up in the NewGamePlus acting like nothing happened.]]
[[/folder]]
----
!The Hoshino Family
An ordinary family who makes their debut in ''Katamari Damacy'', as witnesses to the Prince's katamari-rolling antics. Since then, they've become recurring characters throughout the series.
----
[[foldercontrol]]
[[folder:In General]]
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: At the end of the first game, the family ends up on the moon with only the father wearing a spacesuit. Despire this, they are all completely fine.
* MeaningfulName: The family's surname translates to "field of stars".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tomio Hoshino]]
A hard-working astronaut and loving husband/father. ''Katamari Damacy'''s subplot deals with how his big mission to the stars gets derailed by the fact that, well... there aren't any stars at the moment. A minor detail. Still, things work out by the end, much to the delight of him and and his family. Returned in ''We ♥ Katamari'' to request the King's help directly.
----
* {{Flanderization}}: In the first game, he only yells "Called off!" in response to his lunar expedition being... well, called off. Come ''We ♥ Katamari'', however, and "Called off!" has become his CatchPhrase.
* OddNameOut: The only Hoshino whose first name doesn't start with "M".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mizue Hoshino]]
Tomio's wife. Spends most of ''Katamari Damacy'' trying to get her children to a place where they can watch her husband's ship take off, while ignoring Mutsuo's attempts to point out the weirdness unfolding around them.
----
* AdultsAreUseless: Doesn't take her son's claims seriously, even though he heard it on the news.
* FailedASpotCheck: Repeatedly misses all the evidence of what's going on, starting with the news broadcast. Even when katamari are being rolled ''right by her'', she doesn't notice.
* NotNowKiddo: Brushes off Mutsuo's claims with a dismissive laugh.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mutsuo Hoshino]]
The Hoshino son, who actually notices the UnusuallyUninterestingSight of a big clump of rubbish rolling around and futilely tries to direct his mother's attention towards it. Tends to be somewhat forgetful; he can't keep the names of all the cousins straight.
----
* CassandraTruth: Mentions that the stars are gone, but his mother doesn't believe him. ''Even though it was on the news.''
* DeadpanSnarker: If you replay the "Make the Moon" level in ''Katamari Damacy'' and opt to turn your creation into stardust once it's completed, Mutsuo will comment the following:
-->'''Mutsuo:''' The prince broke up the moon he just made. Rich people sure are different.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Michiru Hoshino]]
The youngest member of the Hoshino family, Michiru is mysteriously sensitive to the state of the Great Cosmos. Whenever the Prince successfully restores part of it, she picks up on and comments about it.
----
* CatchPhrase: "Oh! I feel it! I feel the Cosmos!"
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Her comments about the Cosmos being restored come off as nonsense to her mother.
[[/folder]]
