List of mercenaries from the ''VideoGame/JaggedAlliance'' series.

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder: Introduced in Jagged Alliance]]
!! Dr. Mark "Needle" Kranhuim
* ATeamFiring: Downplayed. He has mediocre accuracy, but his "Hopeless Shot" trait makes it extremely difficult to improve his Marksmanship.
* ComicallyCrosseyed: He has a wandering eye, which hinders him from improving his Marksmanship. [[DeconstructedTrope Unfortunately, he was forced to retire since his condition worsened]] before ''2''.
* JackOfAllTrades: He learns quickly, and can be trained as a mechanic or explosives expert as well as a medic.
* TheMedic: The best one in the first game. The bio says that he revived two patients who were past critical point.

!! Gary Roachburn
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: His portrait, particularly in the 1.13 mod for ''2'', is based on Creator/BruceWillis.
* DysfunctionalFamily: The Roachburns DO NOT get along with one another, only the daughter of the Roachburns can tolerate Larry while every other Roachburn hates one another.
-->'''Gary''': I don't work with my brother 'Anything but a placebo" Larry!
* LooseLips: In ''Deadly Games'' multiplayer he will inform you which teams made a deal with Micky.
* MilesGloriosus: Self-aggrandizing and seriously overestimates his skills.
-->'''Gary''': You probably don't deserve me. But I'll join.
* MilitaryBrat: Unfortunately, he didn't take the best qualities from his father.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: To Mike.
* UndyingLoyalty: Very loyal and will never steal from you.

!! Samuel "Sam" Garver
* BalanceBuff: His fee was reduced in ''Deadly Games''.
* BashBrothers: With Col. Leon Roachburn.
* CoolOldGuy: Faced adversity in the DeepSouth growing up and is one of [=AIM=]'s most experienced mercs.
* OldSoldier: While his age isn't stated, he has at least two decades of mercenary experience and looks into his 60's. This accounts for his stats decreasing over time, and by the time of ''2'' he retires to Florida.
* RedScare: Refuses to work with Ivan.
--> '''Sam''': Not so long as that red menace, Ivan the commie, is working for yas!

!! Glen "Boss" Hatchet
* BashBrothers: With Screw.
* MrFixit: He has the highest Mechanical stat. But he's effective in combat, unlike Speck.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: His alumni page in ''2'' states he gave one to Dr. Gloveless at a Christmas party.
* RetiredBadass: As of ''2'', he left AIM when he took a job to be a mechanic in Vicky's Car shop.
* VerbalTic: He adds "Hell" in the beginning of almost every sentence.

!! Lesley "Smoke" Peterson
* GeniusDitz: His explosives skill is ''more than double'' that of his Wisdom score, the latter of which is one of the lowest in the series.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His alumni page in ''Jagged Alliance 2'' notes that his tendency to short-fuse his explosives quite literally backfired on him when he got distracted by a pebble in his shoe while handing a live explosive, blowing him into an "unidentifiable mess."
* PsychopathicManchild: Practical jokes? Sure, why not. Short-fusing explosives and putting friendlies in mortal danger for some cheap laughs? Not the mark of an entirely sane man.

!! Jimmy Upton
* BankRobbery: What finally gets him up locked up for good by ''2''. He's caught trying to rob a bank in Detroit and is extradited back to Ohio to serve his original sentence.
* BashBrothers: With Magic.
* BoxedCrook: Why he's working for AIM.
* FrameUp: Insists this is why he fell on the bad side of the law. His actions and skills make his claim doubtful.
* ImplausibleDeniability: His alumni page, where he vehement denies to law enforcement that he was trying to rob a Detroit bank despite being caught there after hours with burglary tools in hand.

!! Dr. Ahmad "Doc" Koolhan
* BashBrothers: With Needle, to the point that he will leave your team if you fire Needle.
* CombatMedic: Has decent Marksmanship and good physical stats on top of his medical skills.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: In ''Deadly Games'', he will take getting fired before participating in a mission personally, and will reject all attempts to rehire him.

!! Wink E. Dickerson
* ImperialStormTrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: One of the worst shots in the game, but at least capable of real improvement.
* IKnowMaddenKombat: His normal job is a baseball pitcher. His one selling point amid his terrible accuracy and relatively average stats is that his baseball skill lets him to toss grenades much farther. (But not particularly accurately.)
* UnskilledButStrong: Wink is primarily known for his incredibly powerful but horrendously inaccurate throwing arm.

!! Mary Beth Wilkens
* CombatMedic: Not so much at first, but with experience she has the potential to grow into a good field medic who is also capable of holding her own in a firefight.
* KilledOffscreen: By the time of the second game. Her alumni page states that she was gunned down by a crazed stalker.
* MagikarpPower: She is a somewhat poor shot and mediocre medic, but her high physical and mental stats give her the potential to grow into a very capable CombatMedic.
* NaiveNewcomer: A newcomer and a willing to prove herself.
* NiceGirl: Unless Pops is around.
--> '''Beth''': Since Pops has been here, he hasn't left me alone. If that pervert isn't gone by morning, ''I will be!''
* UndyingLoyalty: Very loyal and will never steal from you.

!! Rudy "Lynx-Eyed" Roberts
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: Looks like Creator/HarrisonFord.
* DudeNotFunny: Has this reaction to gory sights in ''2'', admitting that while he used to make jokes about it, it doesn't amuse him after seeing friends die in grisly ways.
** He also has this reaction in ''1'' to Smoke's pranks.
* EgomaniacHunter: His pastime, according to his bio, is to hunt down endangered species.
* FriendlySniper: At least in ''2''.
* StrawMisogynist: He believes that women should be kept barefoot and pregnant. Toned down somewhat in ''2''.

!! Lt. Bud Hellar
* BashBrothers: With Captain Bob Adams.
* EnsignNewbie: Despite his rank, he acts more like this. It is likely he achieved his rank thanks to his YesMan nature.
* UndyingLoyalty: Very loyal and will never steal from you.
* YesMan: Is such an example that his alumni page in ''2'' states that he writes letters ''defending'' corporations.

!! Victoria "Vicky" Waters
* DreadlockWarrior: Sports a beautiful head of dreads in ''3'' and is a mercenary by trade.
* GunsAkimbo: In ''2''.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Is claustrophobic, and as a result she takes a serious performance and morale hit when in caves and underground sectors.
* WrenchWench: She owns her own Antique Car shop, which Boss now works in.

!! Larry Roachburn
* AchievementsInIgnorance: Was drugged up to the gills and managed to pull off a miracle allowing for the Maquis to escape an ambush. How? He was withdrawing, but accidentally withdrew straight into enemy lines which caused so much confusion that everyone else was able to escape.
* TheAlcoholic: By ''2'' he's made efforts to clean up, but leaving drugs (anything from boosters to a medkit) or alcohol in his inventory for too long will cause him to fall off the wagon, along with shifting his attitude and stats. In ''1'' and '''Deadly Games'', this trait causes him to be the only merc not at or past retirement age whose stats decrease rather than increase over time (the only other mercs with this trait retire by ''2'').
* BashBrothers: Static (when drunk).
* BoozeBasedBuff: Inverted; depending on whether he's drunk or sober, Larry's skills in ''2'' change, along with his portrait and voice, but his stats are worse when drunk. This also affect his working relationship, he gets friendly with AIM when drunk but cannot tolerate the MERC soldiers while in sobriety he gets along fine with the two worst mercenaries in the roster but the AIM Mercs hates working with a sober Larry.
* CleansUpNicely: If you manage to get him sober again in ''3'' he looks a lot better.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: In the third game, where his lines imply that he's only half-aware of what's going on around him at ''best''.
* CompanionCube: A stuffed teddy bear named Ted in the third game, which takes up a backpack slot and can't be removed. It still can't be removed even if you managed to get him sober.
* DysfunctionalFamily: The Roachburns DO NOT get along with one another, Larry at least is cared for by Megan. His brother and father outright hate him though.
* FamedInStory: Some of the [[ChummyCommies Maquis]] consider him a living legend after he accidentally save them from overwhelming odds.
--> Raider: Wait... Larry!?
* INeedAFreakingDrink: When walking by rotting corpses being eaten by vultures, he remarks that "People wonder why I started doing drugs..."
* IronWoobie: As much as Merc can be anyway. He goes through so much shit in all of the game he appears in and in the background but he's active.
* NailedToTheWagon: If you get him through rehab in ''3'', he will ask MD to use a cattle prod on him if he starts slipping back to addiction, and is disappointed when MD's response is abject horror.
* OffTheWagon: Can happen in ''2'' if left with any kind of drugs or alcohol in his inventory. He starts like this in ''3'', thanks to [[spoiler: MERC being decimated by the Legion and Larry being captured and tortured. He's enough of a mess when first encountered that he needs a dose of Metaviron to remember who he is and why he's there, and even then he's fully relapsed into a stereotypical [[TheStoner stoner.]]]]
* PromotionToParent: Took care of Megan when their father was doing merc jobs.
* SlippingAMickey: Victim of this in ''3'' to the point that you need to [[{{Panacea}} give him Metaviron]] just to get him to partially detox.

!! Edward "Ears" Stockwell
* JackOfAllStats: Described as such, has a decent Wisdom and Health stat, though low on Dexterity and Marksmanship.
* TheStoolPigeon: He's a snitch. And not above gossip either.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: His alumni page in ''2'' says that AIM does not know what happened to him after he resigned, and that they do not really care either.

!! Murray "Moses" Ebstern
* BalanceBuff: His fee was substantially reduced in ''Deadly Games''.
* CoolOldGuy: Like Sam Garver, he's one of the oldest and most experienced members on the roster.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Opts to leave AIM by the second game due to his failing health and memory.
* OldSoldier: Is at least in his 60's in the first game and his stats show it. While he has very high Wisdom, Marksmanship, and Mechanical stats, his physical stats are quite low, and will decay over time.

!! Patrick "Screw" Phillips
* BashBrothers: With Boss.
* BerserkButton: Will try to kill Bob Adams if they are both on the same team.
* JerkAss: More so than most of the roster.
* LeeroyJenkins: Noted to be ''very'' impatient, and will refuse orders in battle that don't involve firing at someone. This also led him to leave AIM by the start of ''2''.
* MrFixIt: Like his friend Boss.
* PunnyName: "Screw" Phillips, as in the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#Phillips Phillips screw and drivers.]]

!! Helmut "Grunty" Grunther
* BashBrothers: With Ivan and Igor. Putting the three of them together makes for a hell of a team, thanks to their complimentary abilities.
* {{BFG}}: Grunty has the heavy weapons specialty, making him very effective with grenade launchers, missiles, and mortars. Now, if he had the ''strength'' to carry those and the ammo...
* FluffyTheTerrible: His opinion on the Crepitus, calling them "cuddly creatures" and musing on whether they can be tamed.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: He's not fond of killing animals, referring to various dangerous predators as "cuddly creatures".
* MagikarpPower: He starts out as a fairly average merc in the original game, but learns quickly and has a broad range of skills.
* MommasBoy: In ''3'', much of his dialogue refers to his mother, even comparing female mercs to her, which some find creepy.
* PoirotSpeak: His lines are peppered with German words. Especially if he [[ForeignCussWord sees a bad guy]].
* TookALevelInBadass: In [=JA2=] he is noted to "have moved through the ranks of this organization quicker than any other mercenary and is now a firmly established seasoned professional".

!! Russell "Rusty" Hunter
* OnlySaneMan: His selling point when compared to more skillful, but crazier explosive experts.
* PutOnABus: Played with. His alumni profile in ''2'' says he took an extended leave of absence from AIM to work as a special effects consultant. He has not reappeared in any Jagged Alliance game since ''Deadly Games'', however.

!! Ivan Dolvich
* TheAlcoholic: His bio for ''Rage!'' claims that [[INeedAFreakingDrink his experiences in the mercenary industry]], coupled with the death of Igor, have left him [[FunctionalAddict dependent on alcohol to function]]. This is a gameplay mechanic; When Ivan suffers from withdrawal symptoms, it will have an effect on his aim.
* BreakoutCharacter: Went from an economical and reliable pure combat merc in the first game to one of the most popular characters in the whole series and is an icon among Russian-speaking fans for [[SugarWiki/SurprisinglyGoodForeignLanguage speaking in fluent Russian.]]
* BerserkButton: Slavers. He is satisfied after killing Doreen in 2. Meeting with Graaf in 3 is one of the few times he gets angry. He will disobey orders and shoot him if the player try to keep Graaf as the foreman.
* CrutchCharacter: A neat Subversion in the first game. He has excellent combat stats for a starting mercenary for his price point, and he remains reliable until the end.
* EloquentInMyNativeTongue: Ivan only speaks Russian. Very good Russian, but still. By the time of [=JA2=], he has picked up [[{{Hulk Speak}} enough English to communicate]]. His Russian is still eloquent, though.
** His English is even better in though he still gets a little confused on similar sounding words. Which can lead to some panic when Ivan says he's going to make water using someone's canteen.
* EveryoneHasStandards: In [=JA3=] he happily commits to hunting down the people on Maman Liliane's hitlist as they abused her girls. He also happily executes the literal slave driver in Diamond Red.
* FormerRegimePersonnel: Served in the Red Army and reached Major before the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
* HuskyRusskie: Though he is rather short. His main specialty is firing heavy weapons, so.
* MajorlyAwesome: A former Major in the Red Army before the Soviet Union fell.
* MoreDakka: His preferred way of dealing with his enemies.
* {{Nerf}}: His cost was increased from $1500 in the original game to $2200 in ''Deadly Games''. Most players still considered him worth every penny.
* SignatureHeadgear: His ushanka in ''3'', which actually provides some small damage resistance since he refuses to wear a helmet.
* SoProudOfYou: If paired with Igor in [=JA2=], he will greatly approve Igor's marksmanship when he scores kills, commenting that "Igor is ''Dolvich.''" Continues in [=JA3=]
* TookALevelInBadass: In the first game he was skilled, but untested as a mercenary which was reflected by his low price. By the second game, he is a legend in the mercenary world who has broken all of A.I.M.'s kill records and is one of the most expensive and experienced mercenaries on the roster.

!! Dr. Bernie Gloveless
* BalanceBuff: His fee was substantially reduced in ''Deadly Games''.
* DepravedBisexual: REALLY handsy around males in his examinations, but enjoys company of women nonetheless.
* DirtyOldMan: An older man who's not picky about age.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Is given a dishonorable discharge by the time of the second game after AIM was flooded by complaints from other members about his perverted "examinations".
* OldSoldier: Is at least in his early 60s. Consequently, he is slow, forgetful, and cannot improve his stats despite his high Wisdom.

!! "Unusually Ruthless" Reuban
* AxCrazy: He's called "Ruthless" because he killed his family with a cordless hedge trimmer, and "Unusually Ruthless" because he had to recharge it twice before he was done!
* JokeCharacter: He has the lowest daily wage of anybody in the game, and his stats show it, being horrible in everything, physical and mental. His equipment also doesn't include any guns, with his primary weapon being a hedge trimmer instead. His bio also states that he is on ''infinite'' probation.
* MundaneUtility: His Alumni page in ''2'' indicates that he was finally deported to his native Romania and is serving six concurrent lifetime sentences... but he has won several gardening prizes for keeping the grounds of his prison immaculate.
* RedScare: Uses this as an excuse for wanting to kill Ivan.
--> '''Reuban''': You have communist pig on team. Heh. I go. I fix problem.
* ShearMenace: If you hire him, he won't bother bringing any guns with him. He brings a cordless hedge trimmer instead.
* TheLoad: Not only is he useless, having him on your team is harmful because many mercs hate him, he will try to kill Ivan, and he will steal almost any money you give him. And even then, he won't stick around if he doesn't kill enough people - which is very likely, given his atrocious stats.

!! Murray "Pops" [=McGillicutty=]
* BalanceBuff: His fee was massively reduced in ''Deadly Games''.
* DirtyOldMan: He will hit on the much younger Fox and Beth, who won't take kindly to it at all.
* KilledOffscreen: ''3'' reveals that Pops died of unknown but presumably natural causes in 2001, at the ripe old age of 87.
* OldSoldier: The oldest in the series by far. According to his backstory and his lines, he fought and survived the First World War, fought in World War II being the 5th person overall to storm the beaches in Normandy, knew Patton personally, became a mercenary and fought in conflicts all over the world, cheating death at every corner so much that he is considered mystical by the younger mercs. All this easily puts him in his 90s at the time of Jagged Alliance ''1''. According to his alumni page in ''Jagged Alliance 2'', he refused to retire so many times that AIM had to introduce a mandatory retirement policy (at age 85!) just to get him out of the office. And in the 1.13 mod he is back in the game, hirable from MERC.
* PerilousOldFool: He is very slow, has the lowest health in the game, is forgetful, and his stats can actually ''decrease'' over time, which makes him a borderline case of TheLoad. He does have some utility as a sniper, but is ridiculously overpriced in the original game -- his fee is almost double that of Ivan's! This was fixed in ''Deadly Games'', where his fee was massively reduced and he was made available from the beginning, so that his marksmanship and good equipment make him a viable early-game choice.

!! Col. Leo Kelly
* AFatherToHisMen: Some of his line suggest this.
* BerserkButton: Don't try and make him work with Reuban.
--> '''Kelly''': Unusually Ruthless Reuban...crazy Reuban...trimmer of the family tree. You can call him whatever you want, but ''I ain't working with him!''
* ColonelBadass: Regarded by AIM as "a mercenary's mercenary".
* ConsummateProfessional: As long as you prove yourself and can pay him, he will do his job to the best of his ability.
* InsistentTerminology: "I'm a professional."
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: His alumni page in ''2'' states that his whereabouts are unknown to AIM.

!! Tex R. Colburn
* AscendedFanboy: Turns out, he left AIM because he got movie deals in Japanese-made Westerns. He returns in ''Unfinished Business'' as a mercenary for MERC, still wanting a taste of gunning down bad guys Western-style.
* TheBusCameBack: Tex left AIM before the beginning of ''jagged alliance 2'' to pursue a career in movies but came back in ''Unfinished Business''. He came back to the roster proper in [=JA3=] due to the decline of his movie career as stated in DeadHorseGenre.
* DeadHorseGenre: In universe, the boom of Japanese produced westerns dried up, forcing Tex back into the mercenary game.
* GunsAkimbo: Comes with a pair of customized old-west revolvers in ''Unfinished Business'' and the 1.13 mod, and has the traits to use them well.
* JapaneseRanguage: When Tex speaks, it's a mix of this and cowboy cliches.
* LargeHam: While in 1 he already acts like this, by Unfinished Business he bring it up to act his character which he continues to do in 3.
* {{Kneecapping}}: His unique skill in 3 have him shoot at every enemies' legs and applies an overwatch.
* OccidentalOtaku: Inverted, he's a Japanese man who acts like a Creator/JohnWayne impersonator.
* TookALevelInBadass: A mediocre merc in the first game. When he shows up in ''Unfinished Business'', he has a noticeable increase in most stats, especially his marksmanship.

!! Fidel Dahan
* AmbiguousCriminalHistory: His bio in the first game says he's wanted worldwide for his role in the "Cancun Catastrophe", which is [[NoodleIncident never detailed]] but it's heavily implied that it was an act of terrorism.
* AxCrazy: "Fidel likes to kill." In the original game, once he engages an enemy, he will refuse to move or change targets until his original target is dead or out of sight.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: As in 2's bio saying "he hasn't been himself", by 2 he is less scary and being funnier while still being an AxCrazy MadBomber.
* MadBomber: Has the highest Explosive stat, and crazy to boot.
* NightmareFetishist: In ''2'', He will occasionally go on about wanting to become a crow that feasts on corpses after battles, calling it a good life to live.
* PsychoForHire: Especially in the first game. He'll even break his contract and run off if you leave money in his inventory.
* StraightGay: The bits of dialogue resulting from experimenting with the "handle" command in ''Deadly Games'' suggest he prefers men.
* TookALevelInKindness: A lot more muted and far less insubordinate in ''Jagged Alliance 2'', in which AIM slapped him with fines and sent him off for counseling. In fact, his AIM bio even notes he hasn't been himself. [[spoiler:It's likely because he murdered Hurl between games]].

!! Hurl E. Cutter
* AnnoyingPatient: Severely hypochondriac with the absolute highest health rating possible (100).
* KilledOffscreen: Ended up killed in Havana between ''Deadly Games'' and ''2''. The AIM alumni page notes that Fidel was heavily questioned about his death, but nothing came of it. [[spoiler:If you hire Fidel and have another merc talk to him, Fidel will admit to killing him]].

!! Biff Apscott
* ActionSurvivor: If you actually take him through the majority of the game and he lives.
* DirtyCoward: He quits in the first game immediately after anyone dies, friend or enemy. He'll stick around in the second, though he's still pretty much soiling himself every time the bullets fly.
* TheLoad: He's pretty useless as a merc, even if you do bring Flo with him. His stats are terrible and he comes with the worst equipment in the game. Also, several mercs absolutely hate him for his cowardice in [=JA2=] (though, surprisingly, nobody hates him in [=JA1=]).
* TookALevelInBadass: In [=JA3=] but only because of gameplay limitations/mercy from the devs. In the battle where you have to bail him out, he actually is capable of taking cover and hitting enemies. He's still sounding like he's going to soil himself the entire time.

!! Maj. Spike Scallion
* BashBrothers: With Len.
* MajorlyAwesome: A renowned veteran of conflicts around the world.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Leaves AIM by the second game after being offered a massive contract by North Korea.
* VerbalTic: The word "boy" seems to find its way in every sentence he says.

!! Dr. Raffito "Raffi" Leevon
* BackAlleyDoctor: Not only his credentials, but also his skills and general sanity are all very questionable. Two real doctors in Jagged Alliance refuse to work with him because of this.
* InformedAttribute: His alumni page in ''2'' implies that despite being a terrible doctor, he is at least a good musician even though his low dexterity would have you believe otherwise.
* JokeCharacter: His only good stat is his agility, but this does him no good as all his other stats are terrible, especially his medical skill.
* PhonyDegree: Raffi's medical degree is implied to be this, as a much better doctor, Mitch Shudlem, lampshades:
--> '''Mitch''': I've seen Raffi's supposed medical degree from Harvard. It was full of ink smudges and Harvard was spelled with an 'f'!
* TheLoad: He is not only generally useless as a merc, but several other mercs hate him, he will steal even comparatively low amounts of money left in his inventory, and his stats improve very slowly indeed due to having the third-lowest Wisdom score in the entire series.

!! Cynthia "Fox" Guzzman
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Fox's dialogue is laden with innuendo, and she has a whimsical, cheery personality at total odds with the violence around her. But she is absolutely deadly at close range, especially in room-to-room combat.
* CombatMedic: An inexpensive and effective early game medic.
* FanserviceModel: She's as well known for her centrefold photoshoots as she is for her mercenary career.
* GunsAkimbo: In 2. High dexterity and gunslinging/ambidextrous traits make her one of the best dual-wielding mercs in the game.
* HospitalHottie: Used to be one by trade. But given her decent Medical and perfect Dexterity means she can still be an effective Medic.
* LOL69: In ''3'', her base medical stat is 69. Given her character, this is most likely intentional.
* MsFanservice: Her bio mentions that she appeared in an issue of ''Babes and Bullets'' both as the centerfold and the author of a four-page in-depth article on treating hemorrhaging under battlefield conditions, and received glowing feedback from the readers on both.
** Now in-game for Jagged Alliance 3, one of the first games to have a full body image for the mercs. If Fox's image is to be believed, the woman fights in a war zone dressed in a sports bra. She also says if down to tell her agent to release the nudes.
* ReallyGetsAround: Implied; she is apparently in a relationship with Wolf, she and Grizzly seem to have a thing, and she mentions dating Mike if she's the one to kill him in [=JA2=]. However, her reputation for this kind of behaviour means that some more uptight mercs will refuse to work with her.
* SlutShaming: Because of her looks, her photoshoots, and her promiscuity, several female mercs seriously dislike her, with some refusing to work for you if she's on your team and others demanding more money if you keep her employed.
* WaifFu: Her high dexterity makes her utterly ''deadly'' with a knife in the first game. Less so in the sequel.

!! Sidney Nettleson
* BlueBlood: His background in 1.13.
* QuintessentialBritishGentleman: An outstanding example of one in the series.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: His lines are more pompous than those of the rest of the roster, except perhaps those of Scope.
* RedBaron: In the first game, he is occasionally referred to as the "Sandman". This seems to have been dropped by the second game.

!! Mike
* TheAce: Mysterious, armed to the teeth, a master of almost every possible discipline and impractically expensive to employ.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Mike is the best mercenary in the first game, bar none. He is capable of doing literally everything and doing it well, and coming to Metavira armed with some of the best equipment to start with. However, hiring him requires an extremely high reputation for him to even entertain the thought, and he costs ''$12,000 a day'', which would easily get you six to eight less capable but more versatile mercenaries.
* BashBrothers: With Scully in ''1''.
* TheDreaded: In ''Jagged Alliance 2'', many of your mercs will respond with fear when they realize Deidrianna has hired him, and a few are intimidated enough to resist orders to shoot him.
** WorthyOpponent: Several of the mercs who are not intimidated instead jump at the opportunity to kill a living legend like Mike.
* FaceHeelTurn: In ''Jagged Alliance 2'', he's hired by Deidrianna to put an end to your mercs.
** HeelFaceTurn: Possible in the 1.13 mod, though you need a merc with a ludicrously high leadership like Miguel to recruit him after he's been beaten to critical state. He also ask for 10,000 dollars ''per day''.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: His reason for working for Deidrianna, she has a larger purse.
* OnlyOneName: Everyone knows him only as "Mike", and even that is likely just an alias.
* ShroudedInMyth: Very little in known about him, earning him the nickname "Mystery Mercenary".

!! Hector Alvarez
* BashBrothers: With Hamous in ''Deadly Games''.
* CareerEndingInjury: Suffered a serious wound before ''2'' that ended his mercenary career. Since then, he runs a bed and breakfast in his home town.
* MagikarpPower: A mediocre merc at the beginning, but he has good physical stats and learns quickly, and can become highly capable with experience. He's also the only merc on A.I.M"s roster to have the Heat Tolerant trait, making him immune to the effects of heat waves.

!! Johnny "Snake" Edwards
* BashBrothers: With Ice.
* TheGimmick: Plays up his Snake codename, beyond being a generally stealthy mercenary. He refers to sneaking up on an enemy by 'slithering' up to them, uses 'slippery' as a general term of acknowledgement, and proclaims 'Cobra!' after a kill.
* KilledOffscreen: Shot dead in a botched peace negotiation that resulted in the dishonorable discharge of Spam.
* StealthExpert: Has a camouflage kit, and he's ideal for stealth. In the original [=JA=] and ''Deadly Games,'' he's one of the few mercenaries with the 'stealthy' trait.

!! Ice Williams
* BashBrothers: With Snake in ''Deadly Games''.
* HappilyMarried: He's a married man, and might refuse a contract renewal since he has plans for their anniversary.
* NiceGuy: Friendly and always willing to help out others. In the first game he's one of the better mercs willing to join on the first day, while the second game gives him a bonus to training others.
* MoreDakka: His specialty is automatics.
* NoodleIncident: His A.I.M bio in ''2'' says he recently returned after a brief but disastrous time working for an unnamed competing contracting organization (implied to be M.E.R.C.), scraping and clawing his way back into A.I.M's good graces thanks to Magic.
* SoulBrotha: Surfer accent, badass quotes and a small 'fro.

!! Speck T. Kline
* MrFixit: One of the cheapest and most effective in the first game. Just don't rely on him to do anything else.
* NonActionGuy: His terrible agility and marksmanship make him almost useless on the battlefield. In addition, he possesses the "Extremely Nervous" trait, which makes him whine all the time if not accompanied.
* StartMyOwn: In ''2'', he leaves AIM and starts his own mercenary company called M.E.R.C. At first, its roster is largely composed of AIM's wash-outs and AxCrazy psychos. If you hire them anyway, the funds allow him to bring on increasingly better mercs for hire.

!! Willy "Weasel" Augustin
* AssholeVictim: He was murdered by his wife after ratting her out to the feds over her welfare fraud. The Alumni page claims he was asking for it.
* NonActionGuy: Very slow, a subpar shot, and having terrible physical stats, he is not much use in combat. He is also a borderline case of TheLoad because his low Dexterity hinders his already limited skill in explosives and his mediocre Wisdom means he'll improve slowly. Only his willingness to snitch and the fact that he'll never steal from you are genuinely useful, but there are better snitches available, such as Beth, Bud, or Hurl.
* SirSwearsALot: Even among rough and tumble mercenaries that don't think much about swearing, he stands out for peppering his speech with a lot of "Goddamn"s.
* TheStoolPigeon: A snitch like Ears. [[EveryoneHasStandards Yet he despises Ears for some reason]].
* VerbalTic: Frequently curses "goddamn" when he speaks.

!! Timothy "Leech" Jenkins
* AxCrazy: While not as completely imbalanced as some other mercs, Leech still has the 'bloodthirsty' trait which means he'll ignore orders to do anything other than shoot, and he'll leave your team if he doesn't kill enough people. For being a former trap shooter, he made the switch to shooting people disturbingly well, and comments how hearing people scream as he shoots them is more fun.
* BerserkButton: Hates Skitz and will kill him if both are left in the same sector long enough.
* IKnowMaddenKombat: Borderline. Leech is one of the most accurate snipers in [=AIM=], though instead of a professional soldier, his background was a world-class trapshooter. Explains why his physical stats are pretty average.
* LeeroyJenkins: In battles, he will frequently refuse orders that don't involve shooting people.
* MeaningfulName: Leech is immensely stubborn. His AIM alumni page in ''2'' states that when AIM fired him over his insubordinate nature, he proceeded to sue AIM for wrongful termination. Even after the lawsuit was settled out of court, he continues to flood AIM with applications.
* VerbalTic: "Give me a break"

!! Dr. Clifford "Cliff" Highball
* AmoralAfrikaner: Played With. While not overtly racist and usually approachable if flippant at times, various bits of dialogue hint that the doctor has a mean streak under the surface. The 1.13 mod for ''2'' gives him the Malicious trait, further implying this.
* BashBrothers: With Eli in ''Deadly Games''.
* CombatMedic: One of the few who has both decent (80s in [=JA2=]) medical and marksmanship skills. He also has a perk in explosives, but it doesn't look like much (30-ish points in Explosives).

!! Frank "Hitman" Hennessy
* CoolOldGuy: Has a laid back, easy going personality... ''ace''.
* {{Expy}}: In ''Back in Action'' he sounds like a homicidal [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Ned Flanders]].
* FormerlyFit: In good shape in the first game, but by ''2'' has let himself go a bit which shows in his lower physical stats. By the time ''3'' rolls around, he has lost his own personal "Battle of the Bulge", with an even bigger hit to his physical stats.
* SuperDrowningSkills: He never learned to swim, so getting him into the water is a very bad idea.
* VerbalTic: He keeps calling the player "Ace".

!! Lance Fisher
* DirtyCoward: Cowardly, but he won't flee the fight unlike Biff. Vicki will refuse to work with him because of this.
* PutOnABus: Was asked to leave AIM by ''2'' due to personality clashes with Vicki, and transferred to West Point.

!! Dr. Margaret "Stella" Trammel
* BattleaxeNurse: Has the looks and attitude of one, but is a very professional and competent doctor in her own right.
* ButchLesbian: All but stated in A.I.M.'s alumni page in ''2'', which says she fought an uphill battle to gain spousal benefit's for same-sex partners and has retired to run a clinic with Mouse.

!! Dr. Eli Summers
* BashBrothers: With Dr. Clifford Highball.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: Has the the "Hopeless Shot" hidden trait, which forbids him from improving his marksmanship. Add his already poor marksmanship and you have a merc who is lucky to hit anything that isn't right in front of him. This may explain why he left AIM by the start of ''2'' (the other two mercs with the "Hopeless Shot" trait in the first game had eyesight problems, and this was likely the case with Eli as well).

!! Elroy B. Tolken
* BoxedCrook: Got arrested for his part in the Watergate Scandal.
* StealthExpert: Technically. He does have the hidden "Stealthy" trait, but his poor Agility score goes against this.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Parodied. Ears at least got a few sentences on how he's gone, and [=AIM=] hadn't gone out of their way to hunt him down. For Elroy, his alumni page has 10 words.
--> '''AIM:''' He's gone. We didn't ask. We didn't care. Does anybody?

!! Peter "Wolf" Sanderson
* FormerlyFat: While "fat" is probably stretching it a bit, Wolf is mentioned as having taken a leave of absence after ''Deadly Games'' in order to go through intensive training and physical conditioning. By the time ''2'' rolls around, he is forty pounds lighter and his stats reflect his physical improvement.
* JackOfAllStats: Good physical stats and marksmanship, along with adequate though not exceptional skills in every other stat.
* ThisIsMyBoomstick: Has Shotgun expertise and gunslinger.
* TookALevelInBadass: In ''2''. Wolf went into intensive training after ''Deadly Games'' and boosted his stats and rounded out his skillset.

!! Bruce "Skitz" Bonner
* AxCrazy: His nickname comes from him having schizophrenia. In addition, he will quit your team if he doesn't kill enough people. Seeing his stats are so poor, this is quite likely. Finally, he will refuse to move or change targets once he has engaged an enemy, until said enemy is dead or out of sight.
* BerserkButton: Bruce may like Larry, but he certainly doesn't like his sister Sparky. If left with Sparky for long enough, he will murder her while she is sleeping.
* TheLoad: He is slow, insubordinate and untrustworthy, has poor health and accuracy, and several mercs hate him. He also cannot improve his stats. His only skill is explosives, and he's not even *that* good with them. Using him is probably more trouble than it's worth.
* MadBomber: He specializes in things that go boom.
* PutOnABus: Was let go from AIM and committed to an insane asylum by the time of the second game.

!! Walter "Wally" Yuntz
* BashBrothers: With Carp.
* ButtMonkey: His AIM alumni page in ''2'' states "Someone once said that if Wally didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all.". When he tried to fix his eye issues with laser eye surgery, he turned blind due to a programming error in the laser. He finds work as a caddie for Dr. Eli Summers during golf tours.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: His eye problems make him the worst shot in the game with no hopes for improvement.
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Sounds like someone native to Israel.

!! Kirk "Static" Stevenson
* BashBrothers: With Larry in ''1'', and also in ''2'' when Larry is drunk.
* GeniusDitz: He is an amazing mechanic with the rare electronics skill, but has the lowest wisdom stat in the Vanilla Jagged Alliance 2 AIM roster.
* NewAgeRetroHippie: Has the look and personality, but he's not a pacifist.
* MrFixIt: He starts at a maxed out mechanical skill. Only Trevor matches him in this area.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Static has apparently not aged a day since his first appearance in the series. He credits his laid-back lifestyle.

!! Herman "Turtle" Regents
* DonutMessWithACop: "Tell me... does Metavira have a bakery yet?"
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: His alumni page in ''2'' states that he resigned due to being clearly unable to keep up with other mercs during battle.
* MagikarpPower: Has high Wisdom so can improve his initially low physical stats (attributable to his clinical obesity) quickly.
* TheGunslinger: His dominate skill in 1.13, which adds him into the second game.

!! Corporal Len Anderson
* ArtisticLicenseMilitary: Said to be a former Green Beret, but Corporal is below the rank requirements for a Green Beret and generally far too low of a rank for a career military man to hold.
* BashBrothers: With Spike.
* OldSoldier: Acquires this trait by the events of ''Jagged Alliance 2''. Consequently, despite having gained 2 levels since ''1'', not only have some of his stats decreased, he cannot improve his stats from ''[=JA2=]'' onward.
* SergeantRock: Career military man since his teens. He has an experience level of 7 (out of a potential maximum of 9) in the sequel, surpassed only by Gus (8).

!! Marty "Kaboom" Moffat
* TheDitz: His Wisdom score of 13 is the lowest in the history of the series.
* ExplosiveStupidity: The explanation for his abysmally low Wisdom is having stood too close to too many explosions. He's apparently learned how to disarm explosives quite well, at the expense of basic memory and cognition.
* IdiotSavant: He's forgetful, cannot improve his stats, and a below-average marksman. But he's also the fourth-best explosives expert in the game (after Fidel, Mike, and Smoke) and has a very high Dexterity, meaning he's actually quite good with explosives, especially at his price. He is also very fast, allowing him to keep up with any other merc, even when you factor in that he'll lose an Action Point or two to his "Forgetful" trait every so often.
* ImprobablyLowIQ: Marty was found unresponsive one morning, rushed to hospital, declared brain-dead and had his organs harvested as per his donor card. When his family found out they sued, arguing that he was alive and well and just had a slow morning.
* ManChild: Most likely due to brain damage, which is implied by Magic and Scully (both of whom refuse to work with him) to have left him unable to perform basic tasks without help. In ''Deadly Games'' he considers ''Dyno'' (implied to be an {{Expy}} for the children's character Barney) to be his hero.

!! Earl "Magic" Walker
* AwesomeButImpractical: In ''2'', he's probably the best merc in the game when it comes to raw stats. He's a top-tier stealth merc whose physical attributes are nearly perfect, along with great marksmanship and being excellent at picking locks and fixing items. He's also right next to Gus in his ''extremely'' high price tag. The 1.13 mod adds another wrinkle by giving him [[StickyFingers the habit of stealing items]] from the sector, requiring you to constantly micromanage his inventory if you don't want him weighed down.
* BashBrothers: With Jimmy in ''Deadly Games''.
* CatchphraseInsult: Calls the enemy "Snapperheads!"
* LightningBruiser: Big guy with an Agility score of 99. In fact, he's specifically programmed in ''2'' to have the highest real-time movement speed of any character in the game.
* LovableRogue: When not on contracts, he's a professional thief and break-in specialist who isn't afraid to LeaveNoWitnesses, but his streetwise attitude and excellent stats make him one of the most popular mercs both in-universe and with the fanbase.
* MrFixit: A competent repairman on top of his other skills.
* NervesOfSteel: While most mercs have an OhCrap reaction to being confronted by three or more enemies, Magic simply goes "This is when I'm at my best!".

!! Reverend "Rev" Clyde Potter
* BadassPreacher: The chaplain for A.I.M. By ''2'', complaints from atheist members have removed the position along with him.
* BeyondRedemption: Believes "Unusually Ruthless" Reuban to be this:
-->'''Rev''': Reuban T. Satan is by far the worst piece of work Lucifer has ever sent to represent him on God's Earth! I won't work with him!
* OldShame: Invoked. According to the Alumni list in ''2'', he returned to his inner-city church after ''Deadly Games'' wrapped up, returns his retirement checks and denies ever having been affiliated with A.I.M.
* MasterOfNone: Generally mediocre stats across the board with no specialty.
* RealitySubtext: Invoked in his Alumni entry in ''2'', which claims he was "one of our least utilized members". Players often ignored him in favor of more specialized but useful mercs within his price range.
* WarriorMonk: Southern Preacher flavor.

!! Megan "Sparky" Roachburn
* GeniusDitz: Between saying "like" in every sentence and missing every shot she ever fires, she's a master repairer- able to repair more points of gear per mission than Speck despite his higher mech score (due to a much higher dex).
* DysfunctionalFamily: The Roachburns DO NOT get along with one another, Megan at least cares for Larry but refuses to work with Gary.
-->'''Sparky''': Like I never see Larry... Unless of course he needs money. So, I'll put aside my cares about you just to be like with my brother.
-->'''Sparky''': Ugh, I can't join! My pushy brother Gary is already on your team.
* SuperDrowningSkills: She never learned to swim, so getting her into the water is a very bad idea.
* ValleyGirl: Has the air-headed nature and speech of the stereotype down cold. Furthermore, her alumni page in ''2'' says she became a mystery shopper after leaving AIM.
* WrenchWench: An exceptionally skilled female mechanic. If you're looking for a budget mechanic and don't care about her lack of other skills, she's probably the best choice in the game.

!! Dr. Mitch Shudlem
* InsufferableGenius: One of the highest Wisdom scores in the game, and carries a self-important air in most of his voice-lines that makes it clear he fully believes he's carrying the team.
* MagikarpPower: While his Marksmanship is firmly mediocre, his good physical stats and Wisdom of ''96'' means he can quickly become a very capable CombatMedic. If you're willing to invest the time, he can become a full JackOfAllStats that can do just about anything effectively.
* TheMedic: Is just a few points shy of Needle in being the best in the first game.

!! Robert "Scully" James Sullivan
* BashBrothers: With Mike in ''1''.
* BladeEnthusiast: His dossier has always emphasized his skill with knives throughout every game, and part of his gear always includes a knife.
* TheCasanova: And [[DeconstructedTrope he is paying a hefty child support for it]], since according to Gus he has 6 ex-wives and 21 children.
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: His portrait in ''2'' is based on Creator/MatthewMcConaughey.
* LoveableRogue: Well liked by nearly the entire AIM roster.

!! Howard "Carp" Melfield
* BashBrothers: With Wally. If you fire Wally, Carp with leave with him.
* KickedUpstairs: Takes a desk job with AIM by the time of ''2''.
* MasterOfNone: His mediocre stats and lack of specialties mean he's only good as a snitch, and there's more useful choices on the roster as far as those go. Furthermore, he cannot improve his stats.
* OldSoldier: At least in his late 50's.
* TheStoolPigeon: His AIM page explicitly notes he holds no loyalty to his fellow mercs and will happily snitch on them.
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Sounds vaguely Irish.

!! Carl "It" Goodman
* DumbMuscle: He has little to offer apart from his sheer physical strength; he is slow, a mediocre shot and, worst of all, cannot improve his skills. Partly because of this, he leaves AIM by the start of ''2'' to resume his former wrestling career.
* GentleGiant: Has a simple, non-threatening attitude while also being one of the largest and strongest characters in the series.
* SuperDrowningSkills: He never learned to swim, so getting him into the water is a very bad idea.

!! Vincenzo "Vinny" Massimo
* TheEngineer: He's a good mechanic at a cheap price. Although Speck and Sparky outclass him in this respect, Vinny is a noticeably better shot than either of them, making him more useful in the field.
* TheMafia: His occupation when not working as a mercenary. This leads to him being suspended from AIM by the time of ''2'' due to him being indicted on federal racketeering charges.

!! Capt. Bob Adams
* AcePilot: Started out as one.
* KilledOffscreen: Retired from AIM and was killed in a helicopter crash by the time of ''2''.

!! Elio:
* ATeamFiring: His Marksmanship skill of 23 is the second lowest of all characters in the first game. As the natives cannot improve their skills, he is of little help during gunfights.
* FragileSpeedster: A dismal shot, yet he has great Agility, Dexterity, and he has decent health.
* NativeGuide: A native of Metavira, he will provide a bit of info every time you enter a new sector. He is good at fending off water snakes and unaffected by heat waves. He also requires no salary and his fate does not affect your mercs' opinion of you.
* UndyingLoyalty: Very loyal and will never steal from you.

!! Hamous
* AchievementsInIgnorance: He somehow managed to wander into Arulco by driving an ice cream truck from Paris... and trying to reach Istanbul.
* BashBrothers: With Hector in ''Deadly Games''.
* MightyGlacier: In ''1'', Hamous is the mirror of Elio in stats. Hamous is slow but has considerably stronger. His decent marksmanship stat means he can actually hit enemies when the bullets start flying.
* YouNoTakeCandle: Talks like this.

!! Juan
* ATeamFiring: A terrible shot, with no hope of improvement.
* TheEngineer: Has a decent Mechanical skill of 70.

!! Wahan
* ATeamFiring: The worst shot in the game, with no hope of improvement.
* TheMedic: Has some medical skill.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Jagged Alliance [=NPCs=]]]
!! Jack Richards
* BigGood: The man who hired you to stop Lucas, doubles as MissionControl.
* UnclePennybags: He gives you extra cash if you do well enough and complete certain quests.

!! Brenda Richards
* ClothingDamage: If kidnapped, she leaves her bloodied clothes as hints to her whereabouts, to the point that she loses her underwear and is draped in a white sheet when your mercs find her. It is unclear how she lost them or how they got bloodied in the first place, though presumably they were torn off in struggling with her kidnappers.
* DamselInDistress: If certain conditions are met[[note]]you have to take her lab in Sector 28, then allow it to be recaptured and remain in enemy hands at the end of the day. The AI will try and take the sector back at all costs to force this event[[/note]], she will be captured by Santino's men and taken to one of five sectors to be killed in a set number of days depending on difficulty. She will be usually be taken to Sector 24 if it remains in enemy hands.

!! Lucas Santino
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled[=/=]TakingYouWithMe: If you bust down his door in his headquarters, he'll set off some explosives that'll kill him [[CollapsingLair and destroy his base]].
* BigBad: The main villain of the first game.
* {{Greed}}: His goal is to control the island so that he can profit from the sap.
* MadScientist: He did work for Brenda before going rogue. He was even able to create a Fallow sapling.
* TheStarscream: He used to work for the Richards. After convincing Jack to let him have his own lab, he brought in his Mooks to take over the island.
* TheUnfought: As mentioned, he'll kill himself as soon as you reach him. There is no way to fight him directly, and even if you use cheats to reach him you'll only find that he is completely invulnerable to all attacks.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Introduced in Deadly Games]]
!! Jean Pierre "La Malice" Viau
* AxCrazy: He's a former strip club doorman who lost his job over stabbing the clientele (and the owner). He will leave your team if he doesn't kill enough enemies, and will kill Dyno if they are left on the same team.
* BladeEnthusiast: Before Razor in ''2'' he was the most visible example of a knife-loving merc, backed in-game by his extremely high Dexterity and always coming equipped with a knife.
* CasanovaWannabe: His crude and direct attempts to woo women just piss off most of the female mercs, and Gaston sees him as a disgrace.

!! Anita "Mouse" Backman
* TheBusCameBack: Reappears in ''3'' as a Recruit-tier AIM merc, with her bio stating that her relationship with Stella either fractured, or that she is trying to reconnect with some of her and Stella's old friends from their mercenary days for unspecified [[BlatantLies but totally innocent]] reasons.
* EveryoneHatesMimes: Found herself on the receiving end of this before becoming a mercenary, with her street performances panned by critics and getting stones thrown at her in Tripoli.
* MagikarpPower: She has very high physical stats and an above-average Wisdom score; she just lacks experience.
* HospitalHottie: In the second game, she's left AIM for a nurse position at Trammel's clinic.
* LipstickLesbian: All but outright stated with Stella, with whom she retired to run a clinic until her return in ''3''.
* StealthExpert: Her stealth skills are actually on par with Magic's; she just lacks his experience.
* TookALevelInBadass: Downplayed in ''3''. While her stats start off lower than they were in ''Deadly Games'' due to being out of the merc profession for a while, her voice lines and general attitude are more confident than before.

!! Jack "Postie" Durham
* AxCrazy: He idolizes ''Reuban'' of all people. Partly because of this, his alumni page in ''2'' states that he was one of the few mercenaries AIM regretted ever allowing to join.
* GoingPostal: He was a postal worker who left just before he snapped.

!! Edgar "Nails" Smorth
* BadassBiker: Leader of the biggest bike gang there was, even has his own leather jacket (which he refuses to take off).
* BerserkButton: Trying to take off his leather vest in-game will trigger this, as will (to a lesser extent) trying to make him work with Sparky. Also [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas do not speak ill of his mother]].
** '''Nails''': Don't even THINK about it!
* BloodKnight: While not as crazy as some others, he loves a good fight and is actually happy when you get him to kill half of a village who just happen to be murderers.

!! Sheila "Scope" Sterling
* ActionMom: Her chatter indicates that she found the time to have at least two kids betweeen ''2'' and ''3''. She was one of the best shooters in the game pre-motherhood, and she has lost nothing.
* ArtisticLicenseMilitary: ''Deadly Games'' claims she was part of "British Special Forces", presumably a catch-all term used by the game to avoid naming a specific branch. This is Lampshaded in the second game, where her AIM page is spent correcting this error and states that she was a member of the SAS. Though this still counts as an example as the SAS did not accept female applicants until 2018.
* FriendlySniper: Cheerful, outgoing and articulate. Also, has maxed-out Marksmanship and a history as an SAS sniper. She's one of the most stable possible teammates as well, only objecting to Tim "Numb" Sutton (mostly because he's just that good at pissing everyone off). In the third game, she'll even bake biscuits every week, which are added to her inventory as a healiag item.
* HappilyMarried: Some of Sidney's chatter mentions that Scope is married, as do some of her own lines.
* IAmVeryBritish: "Biscuits!". Also, doesn't get along with French mercs all that well.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: She's one of the few mercs able to manage hits on "impossible" targets (i.e. blanked out and prompting a "are you serious?" quote from the merc in question). Appropriately enough, her response is not a variation of "I can't hit that" but "Are you sure you ''want'' me to hit that target from here?" She's still not ''likely'' to hit the blanked out target, but she has a chance that others don't.
* QuintessentialBritishGentleman: Less of a walking stereotype than Sidney, but nevertheless an endless wellspring of britishisms, outrageously plummy RP accent and relentlessly StiffUpperLip.

!! Col. Leon Roachburn
* BashBrothers: Very good friends with his war buddy Sam Garver. if Sam gets fired, he will follow suit.
* DiskOneNuke: In the 1.13 mod for ''2'' that adds him to MERC, he can be considered this. While his physical stats are below average, his combat prowess is amazing. His 85 marksmanship and experience level 8 (Second highest in all of the game, only beaten by Pops) will make sure that you constantly hit your targets. Plus he has the Squadleader perk that gives useful combat bonuses to mercs below his level AND he has the teacher perk which allows him to very effectively train both mercs and militia. Also he as the Snitch trait which allows him to Spread Propaganda in towns, slowly raising town loyalty. All of this for 800 dollars a day.
* DysfunctionalFamily: The Roachburns DO NOT get along with one another, views every single member of his family as either mooches or spoiled brats like their mother. After his death, his will cuts all of his family out of his fortune, instead leaving it to Creator/PamelaAnderson.
--> '''Leon''': I ain't going! I can't stand my kids! They're always looking for money or causing me grief. They're just like their spoiled little mother!
* LifeWillKillYou: His AIM alumni page in ''2'' says he died in a grease fire at his home.
* LooseLips: Will spill what teams thinks about you.
* OldSoldier: One of the oldest in the roster.
* SillyWill: He left his entire estate to Creator/PamelaAnderson.
* TenMinuteRetirement: Comes out of retirement in ''Deadly Games'' out of anger at the poor performances of his younger family members.

!! Roger "Dyno" Wittman
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: His alumni page in ''2'' states that he had to accept he was not cut out to be a mercenary, and went back to his old job.
* MadBomber: While more mentally stable than most, he's a former child show actor with an Explosives rating of 85.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Heavily implied to be the actor for [[Series/BarneyTheDinosaur Barney]], or an {{Expy}} thereof.

!! Louisa "Buzz" Garneau
* AxCrazy: In ''2'', where she has the Psycho trait and is considerably more unhinged.
* BrokenBird: In the second game. Her novel was rejected, she broke up with Lynx. She now hates all men as a result of said incident.
* LooseLips: In ''Deadly Games''.
* ReallyGetsAround: Was this before the events mentioned above. One of her quotes implies she had even slept with ''Reuban''.
* StrawFeminist: In ''2'', her falling out with Lynx has left her with a hatred of all men.
* WomanScorned: Don't bring Lynx in the sequel with her, you seriously don't.

!! Alan "Spam" Webster
* HappilyMarried: Will say as much if a female merc uses the hand icon on him.
* LightningBruiser: Not quite to the extent of Magic, though.
* MrFixit: In 1.13 he has both the paramedic and technician traits, making him both this and CombatMedic.
* TechnicalPacifist: What got him fired from AIM prior to ''2'', as he got Snake killed in a poorly-judged negotiation attempt with armed natives in Maupaa.

!! Gus Tarballs
* AwesomeButImpractical: Easily one of the best mercs in ''2'', except for his average agility, slow real-time walking speed, and ''very'' high price tag, which pushes him into this. By the time you can actually afford him for more than a few days, chances are you don't need him anyway. It's not uncommon for players who hire him to bring him in for a single day in order to take his equipment before dismissing him.
* BigGood: He's the one giving out the missions in ''Deadly Games'' and ''Online''.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He said he briefly worked for Santino. "Briefly" being the keyword. He quit shortly after knowing what Santino was up to.
* InUniverseNickname: Refers to the player as "Woody." He's also the only merc with dialogue that makes it clear that he knows ''you'', the player character, personally.
* MadeOfIron: Gus is one ''tough'' bastard. Most mercenaries at his age would retire after getting a leg crushed by a falling mobile home. [[DentedIron Though his age and leg injury has left him with a limp]], reflected by his mediocre agility and slow real-time walking speed.
* OldSoldier: One of the oldest members in the AIM roster by ''2'', he's also one of the best.
* OptionalPartyMember: You can actually get him to join you in the final mission of ''Deadly Games'', provided you have a free merc slot. He's an excellent sharpshooter, but somewhat slow. He's also free.
* RetiredBadass: In ''3''. He's still part of AIM's roster but his bio notes that he's not checking his voice mails. If you try and contact him anyway, he tells you that he's not interested in coming back because of his bad leg catching up to him. [[spoiler:It's possible to coax him out of retirement and hire him, but it takes hiring Len and Scully along with paying him a hefty $50.000 contract to do it.]]
* VerbalTic: "Horsecrap!" and "Woody!"
* WeHelpTheHelpless: Gus makes it clear that while he sells his considerable talents, he's interested in doing ''good'' with those skills. His answering machine even mentions that he's constantly out "righting wrongs."
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Introduced in Jagged Alliance 2]]
!! Carl "Reaper" Sheppards
* AntiHero: While certainly a ruthless and dangerous man, Reaper admires the bravery of the Arulco rebels, and looks forward to ''ripping out Deidranna's soul.''
* BadassInANiceSuit: In the third game, he shows up to crawl through west African jungle in a very slick black suit.
* BloodKnight: "Never the thrill I'm looking for..." Which is often said after he blows a man's head off.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: He considers death and killing a spiritual experience and isn't afraid to die but he hates Numb because he considers his attitude slobbish, and thinks he shouldn't be allowed to kill due to him not appreciating the spirituality of killing.
* ColdSniper: His skills as a marksmen will scythe down enemy troops if you give him even a halfway decent gun. In the base Unfinished Business game, he is one of only three mercs to have the "On-roof" trait that gives a bonus to accuracy when on a rooftop.
* DissonantSerenity: His response to a life threatening injury? "I'm bleeding... that's cool."
* TheDreaded: Hell, even AIM quotes a CO that he's too dangerous for service in Special Forces.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He is disgusted by incompetent commanders or ones who show a disregard for the lives of their men and refuses to put himself in risk of certain death by joining them.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Resembles Richard Marcinko of ''Literature/RogueWarrior'' fame. His 3D model in the third game has untied hair and a suit, making him look like Creator/KeanuReeves as Film/JohnWick.
* NotAfraidToDie: Just short of being a DeathSeeker, his dying quote is a growled, "If this is death, I'm ready. Let's get on with it."
* ProperlyParanoid: When hiring him, he makes it a point to demand that once his employment is terminated, he gets all paperwork related to the operation so he can destroy all record of working for you.
* PsychoForHire: And he goes for quite a bit, too.

!! Kyle "Shadow" Simmons
%%* Bare Your Midriff: In ''3'' his character is shown wearing camo pants and a tac vest that leaves a fair amount of midriff bare.
* ColdSniper: "Didn't even say goodbye."
* ConcealmentEqualsCover: His camouflage is so effective that ''Rage!'' gives him a unique trait that counts long grass as cover, reducing any damage he takes as he's harder to hit effectively.
* DeadpanSnarker: When up against Crepitus.
* FlashStep: His Shadowalk ability in ''Rage!'' is described as him sneaking past the enemy unseen. In practice, he essentially teleports in a puff of smoke.
* LeanAndMean: Probably due to his battle with cancer, he is quite skinny in ''Rage!''
* ProperlyParanoid: In ''Rage!'', he's become this, noting that you're not paranoid if they're actually after you.
* RedScare: Being a former [[UsefulNotes/ColdWar Cold Warrior]], he doesn't get along with Russian mercs. Thankfully, he's also professional enough to not take a massive morale blow from doing so.
* StealthExpert: Paraphrasing his bio: "...that shrub, sand dune, snow drift or satellite dish could easily be this master of disguise. He has made it his business to blend into any kind of environment for any length of time." And it shows - in the vanilla game he's 100% camouflaged in all environments, regardless of what he's wearing.
* TheTopicOfCancer: According to his bio for ''Rage!'', he's survived leukemia, but, combined with being poisoned in a gas attack, he's prone to sickness.
* TheQuietOne: Rarely speaks more than a few words at a time.

!! Trevor Colby
* AwesomeButImpractical: His stats are amazing, he's a dual mechanic/explosives expert, and his price is a not-unreasonable $2800 a day. The problem is that he starts out with Experience level 2 and his rapid leveling means his salary gets out of control quickly. Allow him to reach Level 7 and he'll start asking ''$7500'' per day. For that price, there's a number of other mercs that are nearly as good and go much easier on your bank balance.
* GadgeteerGenius: Even his A.I.M. dossier claims he can "turn a harmless toaster oven into a lethal weapon". Also widely considered to be the best item-merger in the game.
* MrFixit: Starts with a maxed out Mechanics skill at 99.

!! Ron "Raider" Higgins
* BattleCouple: With Raven. Raider even suggests that he be paired up with Raven when being hired, and the A.I.M. dossier on them mentions they work extremely well as a team. They both get a major morale boost if on the same squad. The dossier also mentions that fears of nepotism aren't warranted, as they act strictly professional in the field.
* ConsummateProfessional: He has two modes of talking in battle. This one is SWAT Team commander giving status reports to dispatch
* InsistentTerminology: Enemy soldiers are "felons" or "suspects". Sectors are "blocks".
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: In fact, he's got the best leadership in the entire game, coupled with the Squadleader skill (in 1.13), makes him the ideal leader of any mercenary team. Being an ex-SWAT team commander, this makes sense.
* TeamDad: One of his two modes of talking in battle, fitting for his High Leadership stat.
--> "Don't worry, you'll get the next one!"
* VocalDissonance: His aggressively nasal voice runs in contrast to his no-nonsense cop looks and sky-high leadership rating.

!! Charlene "Raven" Higgins
* ArmorPiercingAttack: Her Precision Shot ability in ''Rage!'' allows her to bypass an enemy's armour.
* BattleCouple: With Raider. Like Raider, her morale takes a boost when she is on the same squad as him. [[spoiler: According to her bio for ''Rage!'', she took to living alone in the forest after his death.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: To an awesome degree.
* BloodKnight: Minor. She finds one of the neighborhood families near her boring because their vacation and job stories don't involve any gunplay.
* HeroesLoveDogs: Hero is really stretching it but when you hire her in ''3'' she mentions that she needs to quickly find a dog sitter.
* InsistentTerminology: Shares Raider's insistence on calling hostiles "felons" and "suspects."
* LoveTriangle: If Hitman's on the same squad. Oddly, she doesn't do anything - Hitman and Raider just argue and take a huge drop in morale.
* WouldNotShootACivilian: As befitting an ex-cop, she values the lives of innocents. If she does shoot a civilian in ''Rage!'', her morale takes a hit.

!! Thor Kaufman
* NewAgeRetroHippie: Played with. His bio in ''2'' states that he's a healer and lives on a commune in a long-term relationship with a woman he isn't married to. However, he is quite good with conventional medicine too, especially for someone without any formal medical training. On top of this, he is prodigiously strong and a pretty good shooter with a talent for killing quickly and quietly. His appearance in the third game leans further into the trope, with his 3D model and dialogue being closer to the stereotype.
* PoirotSpeak: Probably the second most prevalent one besides Ivan.

!! Stephen Rothman
* AmazonChaser: Has a thing for burly, dominating women. Like Meltdown.
* ConsummateProfessional: Treats this mission as a business venture rather than fighting for a cause. Also, he hates Larry and Static due to them being seen as rather "infantile" and wonder how they get their job drunk and high.
* NoBloodForPhlebotinum: Worked a diamond mercenary/consultant and thus worked in protecting foreign resource interests. Dimitri hates him for that since that was what allowed Deidranna to oppress the nation into a dire straight of poverty.
* VerbalTic: "Schmorgasbord!"

!! Dr. Daniel "Danny" Quinten
* BashBrothers: Can develop this relationship with MD.
* BerserkButton: Has no patience for cowards (like Biff) or meatheads (like Steroid).
* CombatMedic: Besides his very good medical skills, his attributes and traits with handling pistols make him a decent choice for CQB.
* DeadpanSnarker: Around the Crepitus, along with Shadow.
* GunsAkimbo: Has the "Ambidextrous" trait that removes the negative impact from dual-wielding.
* InsufferableGenius: Danny is very confident in his abilities, and he is quite skilled, but he often looks down on others, and openly states that a mercenary he doesn't like should be put on a "different, less crucial team."
* HeManWomanHater: One of his conversation voice lines has him say women aren't physically suited for combat, and they shouldn't be soldiers.
* NoOneGetsLeftBehind: Known for jumping into combat zones to rescue injured soldiers and refusing to evacuate until the wounded were extracted first.

!! Dr. Q. Huaong
* CombatMedic: Decent marksmanship (except in ''Rage!'') and is one of the best mercs available for hand-to-hand combat skills in the game, along with fairly good medical skill.
* FunnyBruceLeeNoises: Makes these when using hand-to-hand attacks, and is the only merc to do so in the entire game.
* IKnowKarate: Comes with the "Martial Arts" trait, and is one of the very few characters in the game to have it. He's also the only merc to have a special animation set for hand-to-hand attacks.
* OneHitKill: His unique ability in 3 is the downplayed version. It renders the target unconscious rather than kill the target which means they are knocked out for the battle and lay helpless that you can beat them to death at your leisure.

!! Ernie "Red" Spragg
* CounterAttack: While there is a perk in 3 for this, his unique ability allows him to do so with grenades instead.
* GrumpyOldMan: Every time he opens his mouth, it is either mocking the enemy or complaining about something.
* TheEeyore: Relentlessly pessimistic and expects the worst of every situation. In ''3'', he even has a perk with a chance to nullify any morale boost in his squad.
* MadBomber: Inverted as it is heavily implied that his work with explosives has made him insane, rather than the opposite. He's also extremely finicky about setting up explosives.
* SirSwearsALot: He is a lot more foul-mouthed in 3.
* StayInTheKitchen: Has ''very'' old-fashioned views about women, and doesn't get along with most female mercs on the roster as a result.

!! Keith "Blood" Hanson
* BerserkButton: Hates Cliff due to South Africa tensions, the only person he hates more than Cliff is Bubba. In the third game, his dialogue during conversations with NPC's makes it clear that he has nothing but contempt for white colonialists, poachers, and their collaborators.
* BareFistedMonk: Also one of the few characters with the martial arts skill.
* BottomlessMagazines: In 3 he never runs out of knifes to throw.
* IAmAHumanitarian: In ''3'', he notes that if you are what you eat, then he's a whole person.
* InappropriateHunger: In the third game, where around half of his lines (including digging into cover and ''blowing an enemy's head apart'') have something to do with looking for or wanting food.
--> "Man, brains ''everywhere''!... now I want noodles."

!! Dr. Donna "Spider" Houston
* DeathbringerTheAdorable: "Spider" is so-called because she's afraid of insects.
* SouthernBelle: Has the accent and manners of one.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Freaks out and suffers a severe performance drop when fighting the Crepitus due to her fear of insects. She also suffers a morale penalty when in jungle sectors.

!! Bobby "Steroid" Gontarski
* TheAhnold: Parodied. He is a Polish muscleman with extremely awkward English, all but outright stated to be a walking performance-enhancing drug scandal in the making, and his dialogue suggests he has serious mommy issues.
* DiscOneNuke: In ''2'', he's one of the most reliable early-game mercs on the roster. His traits, decent marksmanship, high mechanical skills and low price make him a appealing and economical choice. He'll have a tough time keeping up with dedicated mechanics or lockpicking doors due to his low Dexterity stat, but the 1.13 mod gives him the Engineer trait which gives massive bonuses to lockpicking and repairing, compensating for his low Dexterity.
* {{Expy}}: His 3D model in the third game is given sunglasses and suspenders over a shirt, making him look like VideoGame/DukeNukem.
* GeniusBruiser: As the name implied, he is very strong. He is also one of the best mercs for repair, computers and lockpicking until you can afford specialists (and even then, still good). His primary weakness being speed.
* HeManWomanHater: Views women as weak and inferior, with Fox in particular being creeped out by him. It is suggested by a few bits of dialogue that it stems from having serious issues with his mother.
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: His unique ability in 3, he punch an enemy so hard that he will send the enemy flying, sometimes through a wall.
* RedScare: ''Hates'' working with Russians. Likely a reference to the tensions between Poland and Russia during the Soviet days.
* YouNoTakeCandle: "Robert Gontarski is ummm... UNAVOIDABLE right now."
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: It's ''supposed'' to be Polish. In ''3'' they don't even bother and lean into the Arnold parody more with his voice.
* WithCatlikeTread: When going into stealth mode in ''3'', he'll often shout "Be quiet now!"

!! Norma "Meltdown" Jessop
* AxCrazy: She has the “Psycho” character trait, and in Jagged Alliance 3, [[HorrifyingTheHorror she makes OTHER Psychos]] (such as [[AllBikersAreHellsAngels Nails]]) [[https://youtube.com/shorts/j_nsUSEkMfc?si=iHgUNvvTOL0VSX2V scared of her outbursts]]:
--> '''Meltdown:''' Nails, gimme some gum, will ya?
--> '''Nails:''' No.
--> '''Meltdown:''' ''No?!'' Well, why the hell not?!
--> '''Nails:''' What do I get out of it?
--> '''Meltdown:''' '''[[ToThePain I’ll tell ya what you WON’T get!]]. You won’t get [[LiteralAssKicking my foot in your ass]]. You won’t get [[GroinAttack my knuckles in your crotch]]. ''And you won’t have to watch me [[ToiletHumor take a DUMP on your JACKET]]''!'''
--> '''Nails:''' [[EvenEvilHasStandards CHRIST, Norma! All you had to do was say ‘Please’.]]
* BiTheWay: Is revealed to be this in Jagged Alliance 3, as she tells Mouse that she’s “cute” whilst [[ItMakesSenseInContext politely turning down what she thought was an attempt to hit on her]], and then goes on a rant about how she has tons of men and women back home who want to be with her when Mouse tries to explain what she was actually asking about.
* BloodKnight: Absolutely ''revels'' in combat and killing.
--> '''Meltdown:''' "I ''love'' my line of work! Killing can be a lot of fun when you have the right attitude!"
--> '''Meltdown:''' ''(After killing an enemy)'' "Moments like that make ''everything'' worthwhile!"
* TheDreaded: AIM even claims someone died of terror before she even raised her gun.
* GunsAkimbo: Which makes her a great choice for CQC.
* [[KavorkaMan Kavorka Woman]]: Despite being middle-aged trailer trash, and having one of the most Psychotic personalities among “Psycho” Mercs, [[https://youtube.com/shorts/b1nKeSN9p5E?si=wkgzMbLzw1NcqVcS Meltdown claims to Mouse]] ([[ItMakesSenseInContext when she thought Mouse was trying to hit on her]], but THEN [[ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne takes more offense]] to Mouse desperately claiming [[ThatCameOutWrong that wasn’t what she meant]]) that she has “guys [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer AND girls]] back home [[ReallyGetsAround lining up to get in my trailer]], IfYouKnowWhatIMean”.
* MaliciousMisnaming: In Jagged Alliance 3, she mispronounces [[https://youtu.be/y272vqzLSsw?si=qXDCGxvG56dtgnOJ Sidney’s]] and [[https://youtu.be/3KKRXMkh1eI?si=iJ6MAJszcnXtbxeK Fox’s]] last names as “[[TeenyWeenie Needledick]]” and “[[ReallyGetsAround Guzzleman]]”, respectively.
* RedBaron: Besides “Meltdown” (which is [[AxCrazy certainly fitting]]), she also calls herself “[[PersonOfMassDestruction Hurricane]] Norma”, usually as a PreAssKickingOneLiner.
* SirSwearsALot: Even among mercenaries that use rough language, Meltdown stands out for swearing notably more often than most other characters.

!! Monica "Buns" Sondergaard
* TheAce: Of the low-cost starting mercs, she's one of the best all-rounders, especially with marksmanship. The decent leadership, the teaching skill, high wisdom, and solid physical stats complete her.
* BerserkButton: Gumpy and Numb both piss her off.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She's cold and professional, and curt with Grunty (who has a crush on her) but she'll warm up to Sidney with time.
* JackOfAllTrades: "Before settling on A.I.M., Buns explored a number of careers: kindergarten teacher, geriatric nurse, Danish sharpshooter at the Atlanta Olympic games, and professional soldier."
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: She is stated to be from Denmark, but her accent sounds mostly German.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Normally unflappable, but two things unnerve her: Crepitus, because they're creepy crawly bugs, and Reaper, because he's ''[[PsychoForHire Reaper]]''.

!! Steve "Grizzly" Bornell
* TheBigGuy: Probably the best example in the whole Jagged Alliance. However, while his strength is tremendous, he's not agile on his feet and his dexterity is poor enough that he often misses with firearms. Find him a spot to set up with the heavy weapons, though...
* DiscOneNuke: He's an extremely cheap starting mercenary who also has heavy weapons proficiency. In v1.13, one of his starting kits includes the M79 grenade launcher, and you can buy 40mm grenades right at the start from Bobby Ray's. Loading Grizzly with grenades and letting him put in some work is one of the most effective ways of staving off the infamous Drassen counterattack in v1.13.
* FiringOneHanded: He can fire light machine guns one handed! [[SubvertedTrope And his low dexterity means that even with good marksmanship, he still misses a lot.]]
* MagikarpPower: Grizzly's abysmal Dexterity is pretty much the only mark against him. If you manage to push it up just a little, into the low-to-mid sixties, he becomes an excellent shooter for the commander on a budget.

!! Barry Unger
* ApologeticAttacker: "Forgive me for taking life."
* BadassBookworm: His AIM profile specifies that unlike most mercs on the roster, he learned all of his skills with explosives and machinery in a classroom. His answering machine also indicates that his "assignments" seem to often involve him doing lab work instead of combat.
* DiscOneNuke: In ''Jagged Alliance 3''. Barry is a recruit tier merc with good Explosive skills and a decent Marksmanship which already pegs him as a good beginning demolitions expert. His real value however comes from his ability to produce two shaped charges for free every week. They deal comparable damage to late game explosives and have a cone of effect as opposed to a blast radius. This makes them suitable for killing a bunch of approaching enemies danger close by simply throwing it right in front of you. This can carry you through some of the more difficult early game encounters. And unlike Fidel or Red, he doesn't have major personality issues or conflicts.
* ReligiousBruiser: His lines show that he is rather religious, and takes matters of life and death seriously.
* TechnicalPacifist: On one hand, he doesn't condone any violence, often saying that killing is bad. He doesn't even gain morale from killing. On the the other hand, his specialty is all things explosive. Especially the incendiary kind.
* YouNoTakeCandle: Not as bad as some examples, but his command of English is... not perfect.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Can't swim and will drown in deep water.

!! Igor Dolvich
* TheAlcoholic: Not impaired like Larry, but is enough of a heavy drinker for Ivan to make a note of that whenever they walk through a field of corpses.
* BadassFamily: Nephew of Ivan Dolvich, so you ''know'' he's a badass. Part of his motivation is to become as good as his legendary uncle.
* BashBrothers: With Ivan and Grunty. Pairing Igor, Grunty, and Ivan on the same squad not only lets them very solidly complement each other with their respective skills, but gives them all a huge morale boost.
* BoozeBasedBuff: His unique skill in 3 involves him drinking some Vodka. This gives him massive boost to his melee strength and gives him some temporary HP but in turn his marksmanship suffers while in effect.
* FriendlySniper: Altogether a good-natured guy, but the Hunter trait he possesses (in 1.13) means he is a deadly marksman with a rifle [[note]]''Rifle''. Not assault rifle or sniper rifle, but bolt-action or semi-automatic, medium-to-long-range marksman rifles[[/note]].
* GeniusBruiser: Igor's base skills are not exceptional starting off, but his physical stats in general are great, and his high wisdom ensures that he learns ''very'' fast. In his own words, "I am from a family of quick learners!"
* PopCulturedBadass: Makes a number of references, though sometimes he mixes up his sources. One of his most notable is [[Film/{{Aliens}} "Game over, man! Game over!"]] when a large number of enemy troops are spotted.
* StealthExpert: Highly skilled at staying out of sight. Though not a good knife thrower, he's still an excellent marksman, so he makes for a great nighttime sniper to cover your knife-throwers.

!! Dr. Michael "M.D." Dawson
* BashBrothers: With Danny, eventually.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite his cheeriness and idealistic disposition, he is ''deadly'' with a knife, and his high wisdom means he learns fast, especially when coupled with an expert teacher like Buns.
* ButtMonkey: He gets bullied by Steroid, tends to be socially awkward, and has a lot of medical school loans to pay off.
* IronButtMonkey: That being said, he quickly gains stats in all the games he appears in, and he has enough backbone in ''3'' to ask for more money if Steroid is hired.
* MagikarpPower: Has one of the highest wisdom stats in the game, meaning he will rapidly progress from his WideEyedIdealist base to a hardened killing machine or your squad's MrFixit if you train him in mechanical work. Have him regularly training people in medicine, and his leadership will shoot up like a rocket.
* TheMedic: Quite well versed as a doctor straight out of med school. His strong medical skills make him a good excellent medical teacher, with the added benefit that this will shoot his leadership up dramatically.
* NightmareFetishist: In the professional medical sense. He is fascinated by Headshot Hue's name sake.
* WideEyedIdealist: Young, inexperienced, a little chattier than most of the others.

!! John "Bull" Peters
* TheBigGuy: Has the highest strength stat of the entire AIM roster. Coupled with his specialty at hand-to-hand combat, and Bull is your go-to guy when you need a face rearranged.
* BloodKnight: Known to be violent and aggressive and while he is tough as nails in combat he is also known for a lack of discipline. He's also ''eager'' to enter combat; the only times you'll get more than a short sentence out of him is when he either enters combat or after you've killed everyone.
* DumbMuscle: His marksmanship is pretty good, but otherwise the one area where he is best at it raw physical strength, and this is reflected in his fees: he's the cheapest non-MERC mercenary available. He also has only middling wisdom, so he's not going to become a master at much else unless you put a ton of work into him.
* HiddenDepths: Married, with several kids. You'll only learn about this if Grizzly is on the team and Bull dies.
* MeaningfulName: John Peters was actually a famous British mercenary who fought alongside Mike Hoare in the Congo in the 1960's.
* TheQuietOne: Played with. Bull is laconic, speaking in short, curt sentences usually, but he's still relatively loud when he does speak.

!! Frankie "Haywire" Gordon
* AxCrazy: He considers ''Vlad the Impaler'' to be his personal hero.
* BashBrothers: With Razor.
* BloodKnight: Doesn't care who he kills as long as he get to kill.
* MoreDakka: Along with a shank, Frankie's weapon of choice involve a leadspitter.

!! Doug "Gasket" Milton
* GeniusDitz: A redneck and a complete idiot, but an exceptional mechanic.
* NoodleIncident: His dialogue is drowning in these. According to him he once OD'd on some pumpkin seeds and had to get part of his colon removed, almost bled out because he somehow bit his ankle and more.
* MistakenForRacist: Will end up falling for Vicki should you leave the two in a sector long enough, but his clumsy attempts to speak to her cause this, and will make Vicki hate him.
* RedScare: Still believes in this, despite the UsefulNotes/ColdWar being over for nearly a decade by the time of the game's events.

!! Bill "Razor" Lamont
* AxCrazy: Practically the posterchild for it in ''2''. His bio states he takes pride in being able to carve the vowels (He's practicing to do the entire alphabet) on his victims before they die. Ironically, despite his general insanity, Razor actually gets along pretty well with most of the mercs in the game.
* BladeEnthusiast: While using knives is a useful backup skill for mercenaries, Razor would very much prefer to use it as his standard weapon, and resents having to use guns.
* BashBrothers: With Haywire.
* BloodKnight: He has a ''passion'' for his job.
* DoesNotLikeGuns: He'll use them, but his lines when running out of ammo make it clear he prefers blades.
--> '''Razor''': Damn guns, [[ComicallyMissingThePoint a knife never runs out of ammo!]]
* GroinAttack: In the 1.13 mod, his "Malicious" trait gives him a chance to do this when attacking someone.
* InsistentTerminology: He's not ''psychotic'', he has ''a passion for his job''. And he'll carve his initials into the chest of anyone who disagrees.
* TheInsomniac: An unseen trait when they introduced a sleep mechanic to [=JA2=] is that different characters have different sleep requirements, able to recover more or less stamina on each hour they sleep. Razor has the lowest sleep requirement in the game, able to completely recover with only four hours of sleep. A subtle nod to his general insanity and unstable nature.
* MagikarpPower: One of the rare cases where this applies despite having a pitiful wisdom stat. His combat skills are poor - even marksmanship is low - but his strength, agility, and dexterity are through the roof, comparable to the top-tier A.I.M. mercs. Get him early and keep him fighting or training, and he'll become an incredibly cheap but powerful soldier.

!! Florence "Flo" Gabriel
* CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkey: One of the more weaker mercs and very nervous in the battlefield. Even fellow Frenchman Gaston doesn't like her all that much.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Her bio mentions she has extensive knowledge on the value of firearms, but this isn't just the typical M.E.R.C. exaggeration -- she actually does get better prices when buying and selling (and this applies to all items, not just guns).
* TheLoad: Terrible skills all around, except maybe as a teacher of the militia in Alruco. [[MagikarpPower Her high wisdom, though...]]
** She appears in ''Crossfire'' (and in ''Back In Action'' if you installed the ''Combat Evolved'' mod), but, as the remakes removed the wisdom skill, she is even less interesting.
* MagikarpPower: Her high wisdom means she can become a scarily competent -- yet very cheap -- merc if one is willing to invest the time to train her.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She's the only woman on M.E.R.C.'s roster.

!! Tim "Gumpy" Hillman
* MagikarpPower: His wisdom score is 94. His quick rise from awkward movie nerd to a soldier of fortune is hilarious if you take the time to tutor him properly.
* PopCulturedBadass: References films frequently. "That was better than Film/ReservoirDogs, man!"
* SpeechImpediment: Speaks with a very phlegmy lisp to accentuate his geekiness.

!! Thorton "Bubba" Jones
* DeepSouth: Practically a personification of the more negative traits.
* HayseedName: "Bubba" is one thing but ''Thorton'', jeez...
* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: While the game doesn't directly say as much, he is disliked (if not outright hated) by nearly every single non-white merc in the game.
* SpeechImpediment: Speaks with a halting stutter that has him pause midway through even short phrases.
* WardensAreEvil: According to his bio, he was the first prison guard in Alabama to get fired for horrible prisoner treatment.

!! Tim "Numb" Sutton
* BoomerangBigot: Is the only paid mercenary who shares the same Hates Nationality field as his own.
* {{Jerkass}}: While skilled, his abrasive personality and punk looks means he's hated by a large chunk of the AIM roster (and he hates them right back). The only AIM merc he gets along with is "La Malice" Viau.
* IKnowKarate: One of three mercs in the game who has the Martial Arts skill.

!! Jim "Cougar" Wallace
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: When near death, he complains about his gaping chest wounds... and asks for some aspirin afterwards.
* MilitaryBrat: His father ran a military institute, and he follows the regs to the letter. In fact, he wouldn't be out of place in a UsefulNotes/WorldWarII flick.
* OnlySaneMan: Before ''Unfinished Business'' came along, he was the only professional mercenary among the crowd of cowards, civilians, psychiatric patients, mental defectives and other misfits that was the M.E.R.C. roster. The most expensive, too.

!! Gaston Cavalier
* TheCasanova: And despises CasanovaWannabe "La Malice" Viau.
* CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkey: Averted. He's one of the best marksmen in the game, comparable to Reaper in skill.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: If he is severely wounded.
* FriendlySniper: Suave and sophisticated.

!! Lt. "Stogie" Horge
* AintTooProudToBeg: In his [=M.E.R.C.=] additional info just says ''Please hire Stogie''. ''We don't want to lose him''."
* {{Expy}}: In a gameplay example, he's [=M.E.R.C.=]'s equivalent to Gus Tarballs. Both are heavy weapons specialists who are the most expensive merc of their respective rosters. Horge is specialized toward direct combat with worse non-combat stats compared to Gus, but is also half the price with better physical stats.
* FiringOneHanded: Another one beside Grizzly that can hold a machine gun one handed.
* OddFriendship: A tough military hardass but gets along with Biff due to their mutual dislike of meltdown.

!! Col Frederick Biggins
* ColonelBadass: Experienced in guerilla warfare with a good spread of skills in Leadership, Explosives, Mechanical, and Marksmanship.
* JackOfAllStats: His only real weaknesses are Medical and physical stats. Otherwise, he's capable of doing just about anything competently.
* QuintessentialBritishGentleman: Apparently has had lesser mercs carry his equipment for him as if he was on an India hunt.
[[/folder]]
[[folder: Jagged Alliance 2 Locals and [=NPCs=]]]
Jagged Alliance 2 Local Recruitables

!! Kevin "Maddog" Cameron
* AxCrazy: Probably the only reason he joins you is that he always wanted to kill the queen's goons. He's the ''only'' RPC who will join you free of charge without you needing to do anything special to recruit him. All you need is a merc with good leadership to convince him, and he'll gleefully join.
* DiscOneNuke: His starting gear includes a CAWS, which is a hilariously powerful shotgun. Since you can recruit him for free in Estoni, he can practically join your team before you've taken Drassen - assuming you're willing to trek that far south and evade the patrols on the roads to pick him up.
* LargeHam: "I'm here! And I ate every bug on the way! There were ''many''!"
* MagikarpPower: The only problem with him is he is level 1 when you get him, if you manage to get him to level 4...
* MrFixit: a TriggerHappy one to boot!
* PsychopathicManchild: Complains about tearing out his own hair, eating bugs, and will whine that he hasn't gotten his afternoon nap if exhausted.
* SociopathicHero: His precise reasoning for hating Deidrianna isn't clear. What is clear is that he ''loves'' killing Deidrianna's men, and he joins up for free just so he can pump them full of lead.

!! Greg "Dynamo" Duncan
* AxCrazy: Dynamo manages to keep it under control, but surviving as long as he did in Tixa has left him a bit psychotic when it comes to dealing with Deidrianna's men.
* CatchPhrase: [[ClusterFBomb S-O-B!]]
* TheEngineer: Boasts solid mechanical skills and good wisdom, with the "Engineer" skill on top of that in the 1.13 mod.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: His only real special ability is his Engineer skill, which is relatively rare (Technican is much more common) unless you're talking high-priced mercs like Trevor. But Engineer gives some startlingly huge bonuses to the Robot's operation...
* ItsPersonal: The reason he offers to join the mercs in the fight against Deidranna.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Having your family executed in front of you kind of makes that happen. Refuse his initial offer to hire him for a measly $50 a day, and he'll offer to join you for ''free'' just to have a part in killing Deidranna.
* TriggerHappy: The Psycho trait he bears means he has a thing for going off with anything with an automatic setting. Give him a semi-automatic and keep him out of the line of fire unless you want to waste a lot of bullets...

!! Devin Cornell
* ArmsDealer: You'll initially encounter him selling explosives and explosive-related gear. With good leadership, he'll join up for a steadier paycheck putting explosives into your enemies.
* IrishExplosivesExpert: He doesn't just sell them, but also knows how to use them.

!! Breeham "Shank" Druz
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: He's a rather useless rebellious teenager, who happens to have practiced knife-throwing to impress his friends at parties. Guess what's the most effective way to stealthily kill somebody in this game?
* MagikarpPower: Unlike most recruitable characters, Shank's stats are bottom-of-the-barrel low; even most M.E.R.C. employees have better. But his wisdom is good, and if you work on his strength, put him in some light armor, load him with throwing knives, and in v1.13, a full ghillie suit and night vision goggles, he can be downright deadly.
* TheStoner: Implied. He mentions being thrown in Tixa for "growing plants". 1.13 implies it further by giving him the habit of abusing drugs left in his inventory (medkits, energy/regen boosters, etc) similar to Larry.

!! Dr. Vincent Beaumont
* MadeOfIron: Has absurdly high starting health, being a professional doctor.
* MagikarpPower: Like most medics, his wisdom is sky high, so he learns ''fast''. Get him early on and train him well, and he becomes a pretty impressive shooter.
* TheMedic: Low agility, worthless marksmanship (at first) and top-shelf medical skills.
* OnlySaneMan: He puts it rather succinctly if you talk with him out of combat: "Two words: Mental ward."

!! Lt. Conrad Gillit
* AwesomeButImpractical: Great in everything... if he wasn't hideously expensive. He can be hired for relatively lower (3300$ per day instead of 5500) cost if you turn him down at first, but still have a decent leadership.
* BoisterousBruiser: He likes to boast if he kills something (especially crepitus), though in a humorous way.
* DissonantSerenity: "Remain calm, it just bug!"
* InsufferableGenius: A solidly competent soldier, trainer and a leader who sees himself as nothing less than a celebrity.
* MoreDakka: He is an automatic weapons specialist.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: Try to talk to him for too long, and he'll decide it will be more fun to just shoot you. You'll usually have a half-dozen heavily-armed badasses standing behind you who just cleared out the rest of the military academy of equally well-armed soldiers...

!! Igmus "Iggy" Palkov
* TheAtoner: He is recruited by Dedrianna, and regrets it.
* FormerRegimePersonnel: A mercenary who left Dedrianna's army. He can be recruited once Mike is killed.
* HuskyRusskie: like Ivan, he loves {{BFG}} too.
* ReformedButRejected: Miguel does not take kindly to serving with a mercenary-turned-traitor, and especially not one that used to work for the other side.

!! James "Skyrider" Bullock
* AcePilot: Was Deidranna's best pilot, before deserting over her cruel treatment of the people.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Back In Action''.
* LargeHam: [[NoIndoorVoice "SKYRIDER HERE! WHERE DO YOU WANT THE BIRD?"]]
* NonActionGuy: He is not a fighter, but part of the team regardless.

Rebels
!! Enrico Chivaldori
* BigGood: Hires the player to help him reclaim Arulco.
* RightfulKingReturns: After Queen Deidranna is dealt with, though he surrenders his title so that Miguel will rule.

!! Miguel Cordona
* OfferedTheCrown: After the Queen is dead, Enrico will declare Miguel the new ruler of Arulco.
* OverratedAndUnderleveled: By the time you can recruit him (you must have liberated 5 towns including Omerta), he comes across as decidedly mediocre in all aspects compared to how experienced your mercs are at this point. This can be averted in the 1.13 mod if you tweak the settings to allow him to join earlier.
* RebelLeader: The leader of the Resistance group in Omerta.

!! Carlos Dasouza
* {{Foil}}: The cold, cautious pragmatist to Miguel's charismatic, optimistic leadership.
* TheLancer: To Miguel.
* ShellShockedVeteran: His comment upon popping a head or seeing decayed bodies suggests that he has become one.
--> '''Carlos''': It does not bother me. Years of war have left me without heart.

!! Ira Smythe
* BloodKnight: She doesn't seem it at first, being an NGO volunteer who ended up fighting in a revolution, but in ''Online'', she becomes a merc herself, implying that she ends up enjoying the job.
* BoomerangBigot: Hates Americans despite being one herself.
--> "I know I am American, but I dislike them. You don't see American forces down here liberating these people. Do you? Who do you think armed Deidranna?"
* DeadpanSnarker: Her comments on towns and special places.
* MrExposition: Will, snarkily, give background on locations if she is sent there after they have been liberated.
* MagikarpPower: Her Marksmanship is abysmal, but her Wisdom is sky-high. This combined with time, patience and her expert-level Teaching specialty means she has the potential to be both a competent gunner and the absolute #1 militia trainer in the game.
* TheMedic: Has decent medical skills, and her Wisdom stat is high enough that she can be easily trained into a great medic.

!! Dimitri Guzzo
* BookDumb: Poorly educated and has a questionable grasp of English.
* ItHasBeenAnHonor: Most mercs and other recruitable characters react poorly to seeing a horde of enemy troops. Dimitri? "Good! We will ''all'' die together!"
* MrExposition: Usually take turns doing this with Ira, even though his English is certainly not perfect. Dimitri is less snarky about it as well, and much more serious.
* MrFixit: Early on, he is a good source of mechanical expertise, especially because he is free once you get the food shipped to Omerta from Drassen after finding Father Walker. His mediocre Dexterity and Wisdom means he will need a lot of training to keep up with dedicated mechanic mercs.

Deidranna's Forces
!! Queen Deidranna Reitman
* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: The only reason she hasn't had to deal with a full-scale revolt is because the people are too scared of her to do anything.
* BadBoss: To Elliot. Every time the mercs make any kind of gains, she slaps him around. Eventually she shoots him in the head. He survives, so she ends up tormenting him ''even more''.
* BigBad: Of ''2''.
* CatchPhrase: "Elliot, ''you idiot''!" [[spoiler: doubles as her [[PreMortemCatchphrase last words]]]]
* EvilOverlord: Effectively rules Arulco as one.
* FinalBoss: Of ''2''. Though given the level of realism in the series, she goes down just as easily as any EliteMook.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Rules Arulco with an iron fist.
* LargeHam: Chews the scenery in nearly every scene she appears in.
* ShootTheMessenger: Repeatedly slaps around Elliot for informing her of the mercs victories and progress. Eventually, she'll literally do this to him.
** If the mercenaries taunt Deidranna by sending her flowers, she'll also tell Elliot to have the messenger who delivered the flowers executed.
* TheGeneralissimo: She's the supreme commander of all Military forces in Arulco.

!!Elliot
* BearerOfBadNews: Has the misfortune of being one. Even Deidranna knows that if he has to say something, it's not good.
* BigBad: Returns in ''Rage!'' as the villain out for revenge on A.I.M.
* TheCameo: [[spoiler:Briefly shows up in the third game in charge of a Legion outpost, though he quickly folds and pleads for mercy once your mercs take it. The only reason he's in charge at all is because he fed the last guy there to crocodiles, ''by accident''.]]
* DentedIron: His portrait gets more battered as Deidranna keeps slapping him around and even ends up with a hole in his forehead after she shoots him.
* DependingOnTheWriter: In Jagged Alliance 3, [[spoiler:Elliot is depicted as a bumbling coward. While the "bumbling" part could be inferred from his Jagged Alliance 2 appearance, he is decidedly not cowardly - despite being unarmed, even after the player's mercenaries make it to the queen's palace through her elite troops, he is defiant and taunts them. He also does not display any signs of fear when delivering bad news to the queen, despite being routinely abused for it.]]
* IronButtMonkey: Often slapped around by his Queen, even surviving a gunshot to the head.
* SanitySlippage: Being shot in the head has left him crazy and out for revenge in ''Rage!''
* SycophanticServant: Like a kicked puppy, he still loyal to his Queen.
* TisOnlyABulletInTheBrain: He's barely affected by being shot in the head by Deidranna. He spends the rest of the game with a hole in his forehead. It may have affected his sanity, though, as he returns in ''Rage!'' a good deal more unhinged.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Oddly enough he's this. If your captured mercs were interrogated, he'll suggest they either release them or send in a doctor to check their wounds.
* UndyingLoyalty: No matter how much Deidranna abuses him, he's still faithful to her. Even when she tried to kill him.

!!Joseph "Joe" Papanus
* EveryManHasHisPrice: He can be bribed and leave you be to kill the Queen.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: If you bribe him. In contrast to Elliot's loyalty.
* TheDragon: Deidranna's second-in-command. Also TheBrute as he's an enforcer.

Terrorists
!! Richard "Slay" Ruttwen (AKA Terry)
* AscendedExtra: He is recruitable with later patches and in the 1.13 mod.
* ColdSniper: In the base game, he is one of very few characters to have the "On-roof" trait that gives a bonus to accuracy on rooftops.
* ContractOnTheHitman: Worked as an assassin for years. Governments that have hired him also want him dead.
* FriendlySniper: He is actually quite friendly after recruited.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: The reason he is wanted.
* ObfuscatingDisability: He appears as a man on a wheelchair at first. Actually quite eyecatching since you rarely see disabled people in Arulco since the Queen prefers to put them to death at birth.
* ProfessionalKiller: His career was a sniper, usually working for governments.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Hates swimming and will drown if he ventures in deep water.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Various world governments want him dead after he performed hits for them.

!! "Matron of Mayhem" (AKA Annie)
* AxCrazy: She ''loves'' the chaos she can cause.
* CardCarryingVillain: She is proud of the chaos and murder she did, and keep headlines of newspapers of them
* EvilRedhead: Her fiery red hair fits her temper and psychotic tendencies.
* ForTheEvulz: Has no real motive for her acts of terrorism beyond chaos and terror.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Her real name isn't known, and its safe to say that "Annie" is just an alias.

!! Theodore "T-Rex" Rexall (AKA Jasmin)
* EvilLuddite: Despises current technology.
* GunsAkimbo: Has a pair of [=MAC-10=]'s he won't hesitate to use when threatened.
* HeavilyArmoredMook: He is clad in Spectra armor.
* HeteronormativeCrusader: Assassinated a judge in the U.S. for making a favorable ruling toward same-sex couples.
* RightWingMilitiaFanatic: A rare non-white example. He's the head of a violent militia in the U.S. dedicated to destroying technological progress and restoring the values of the founding fathers.

!! Kris "The Imposter" Karver (AKA Chris)
* AxCrazy: As an example, cut the ring finger off his fiancee when she decided she didn't want to get married.
* BaldOfEvil: In his Intercept dossier. When you see him in person, he's sporting short hair, though it's not clear if it is his natural hair or a wig.
* EnfantTerrible: Killed his own mother as a child.
* FiringOneHanded: Due to his large strength score giving him the 'bulky' character model, he fires rifles one-handed.
* InformedAbility: His dossier claims that he is a master of disguise, hence his name. When you find him, his disguise (Some hair and a moustache) is not much better than the other terrorists, and is completely ruined by his absolutely terrible attempt at a Canadian accent.
-->'''Imposter:''' "I'iim from CA-nada. We believe in [=PEACEkeeping=]... Eeeeeehhhh?"
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Unlike the others, he didn't even bother to hide his real name, just changing some letters in it (Kris to Chris).

!! Tiffany Eddie (AKA Joe)
* GenderBlenderName: His first name is ''Tiffany''.
* TheMafia: Stereotypical mobster, down to a cartoonish New York Italian accent.
* MurderByMistake: The reason he is on the wanted list. He carried a mob assassination on a target, except by mistake he instead killed a UN official who he thought was the target.
* OhMeAccentsSlipping: The dead giveaway he isn't what he tries to appear to be.
* YouHaveFailedMe: His Intercept dossier notes that the mob is out for his head as much as law enforcement.

!! Sammy "The Druggist" Elgin (AKA Charlie)
* AffablyEvil: Has a friendly and upbeat demeanor, even when offended.
* DrugsAreBad: His primary method of killing is drugging his targets.
* KlingonPromotion: Is forcing Manny De Santos to work as a barboy. Should your mercs kill Sammy, Manny will take his position at the bar.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Introduced in Jagged Alliance 3]]

!! Jacques "Flay" Bohen
* BladeEnthusiast: While he is best in sniping role, he is also skilled in melee.
* BloodKnight: Treats combat like a hunting challenge.
* BloodLust: It also extends to his in game trait, he has increased damage when seeing enemies bleed.
* ColdSniper: Even more so than Reaper, he enjoys doing his things alone and picking off his targets unseen. His unique ability is that he gets a bonus if he's not near team mates.
* EgomaniacHunter: Joined the Poachers looking to hunt more exotic animals, until he realized he have hunted just about every game on the land, except humans that is.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Why he was picking off the poachers. They were rather crappy hunters to the point that they considered picking off a sick exhausted Rhino some major victory.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: After he was bored with the poachers, he started hunting them instead. He is thrilled when offered to "hunt" Legion Thugs and later [[spoiler:Grande Chien Soldiers and Adonis Mercenaries]] instead.
* SoftSpokenSadist: He always talk softly in cold manner even when talking about disturbing things.
* TokenEvilTeammate: While not exactly AxCrazy like some mercs, he enjoys his "hunt" a little too much while not caring one bit about politics or morality.
* {{Troll}}: Loves to scare other mercs just to "mess with them".

!! Kalyna Sokolova
* {{Chuunibyou}}: Talks entirely in roleplaying game terms and believes she's the heroine of a fairy tale, right down to her handle on AIM's messenger service being "hero_princess"
* GeniusDitz: Has a respectable Mechanical stat but below-average Wisdom of 48, and generally comes across as clueless about anything outside of her specific niches.
* LargeHam: She always talks like a fantasy game protagonist.
* MeaningfulName: Kalyna is Ukrainian for [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viburnum_opulus guelder-rose]], and considered the national flower of that country.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Kalyna mentions that it was her ''[[GratuitousForeignLanguage babusya]]'' who taught her to stalk and shoot.

!! Kevi "Fauda" Agit
* JackOfAllStats: Downplayed. Fauda looks well-balanced with a good spread of stats, but her abysmally bad Dexterity and her inability to improve those stats means that hiring cheaper, more specialized mercs who can improve will likely be more appealing in the long term.

!! Leili "Livewire" Idrisi
* CopHater: Given her past as a burglar and hacker, it's not so strange. This also causes some friction with Raider and Raven.
* TheCracker: Learned both computer hacking and lockpicking out of a mix of boredom and curiosity, and breaks into secure databases in her spare time.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: Occasionally comments on how hot a particularly gruesome kill was.
* MotorMouth: She is unable to keep her mouth shut for long.
* SoapboxSadie: Parodied. She chides others for using offensive or insensitive language despite being in a conflict zone, and the worst she says about the enemy soldiers she's up against is that they're "not very competent" or how they're "rude" for shooting her.
* SweetTooth: Her only concern upon being hired to liberate a country in west Africa is about the availability of her favorite snack foods, and she occasionally offers to share her stash of chocolate cashews.
* WellDoneSonGuy: In one of her death soundbytes, she laments having to die before she can earn her parents' respect.

!! Yuri Omryn
* BigEater: It's not part of the game, but every other line out of his mouth is about food.
* BladeEnthusiast: Carries a combat knife which is apparently of enough significance to him that he refuses to let go of it.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: If he isn't talking about food, he wants a nap.
* [[UsefulNotes/TurkicPeoples Turkic Peoples]]: While his nationality is Russian, he's explicitly from the Siberian Indigenous People.
* VerbalTic: Constantly calling the player, his fellow mercs, and random other things "glavniy"

!! Alejandro "Smiley" Diaz
* AwesomeButImpractical: Recruiting him currently involves some very tough firefight with some high level enemies. There are apparently peaceful ways but they are currently bugged.
* CasanovaWannabe: He will hit on female mercs, some like it while others are annoyed by his advances.
* {{Elopement}}: Double subversion in his case. [[spoiler: He ran away with Mollie after the Pantagruel Festival, Maman Liliane worried that he kidnapped her but Mollie actually came with him willingly. Of course he isn't aware that Mollie is a GoldDigger and gladly swapped him with Blaubert when she got the chance.]]
* FriendlySniper: He is always smiling when he isn't angry.

!! Pierre Laurent
* TheAtoner: Can be convinced to join but there are some requirement to be met.
* BladeEnthusiast: A melee focused character, he also comes with a unique Machete.
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler: To the Major. After seeing the slave camp and the mercs explaining that no soldier deserves such treatment, he can be convinced to join.]]
* EarlyBirdBoss: He is the first boss enemy encountered in the game, fought in the first outpost you encounter. He is much tougher than common mooks, wears heavy armor, and is a much better shot. He also has a machete so players need to be careful when attempting a melee attack on him. Even on the lowest difficulty he will provide a challenge to new players. He is no better than a player's merc otherwise.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: He is almost universally hated by Legion members outside of Ernie, and some are just too happy when they just got a chance to kill him, a hint that he isn't as bad as he appeared initially.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler: Emma slips her tongue a few times when mentioning him in the endings where he lives, probably hinting something between her and Pierre.]]
* MercyRewarded: Of course the player must not kill him to recruit him. The only hint the player get is the request to spare him from his father.
* YouHaveFailedMe: He will be in the receiving end of one should you decide to spare him, he will end up a slave in a diamond mine and later a prisoner in a disciplinary camp. Still, those didn't break him and he still somehow managed to stay in fighting shape despite going through all of that.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Jagged Alliance 3 Locals and [=NPCs=]]]
!! Alphonse [=LaFontaine=]
* ChestOfMedals: And unlike most of his peers, he seems to have actually earned them all.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Zig-zagged with his past.[[spoiler: He used to be the national hero for putting down the Communist insurrection, but he was imprisoned after disobeying orders to commit war crimes. He was released by the new regime and was voted as the president later.]]
* NotSoSimilar: [[spoiler: While the Major pointed out his past being eerily similar to that of Facheaux, his ambitions were strictly for the good of his country and that he still has a working moral compass]].
* OurPresidentsAreDifferent: The president of Grande Chien, and whose abduction kickstarts the plot. President Target, natch.
* RetiredBadass:[[spoiler: He used to be a special forces commando, and held the rank of Colonel until he was imprisoned for disobeying orders. This kind of explains his toughness. Still, he admit that he is no OneManArmy as to why The Major could capture him.]]
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Pairs a very conservative charcoal-grey pinstriped suit with a brightly colored and intricately patterned waistcoat.

!! Emma [=LaFontaine=]
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: She is the ruler's daughter, and she takes up the mantle of leading what's left of the government against the Legion.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Emma [=LaFontaine=] discovers too late that she was just a pawn in the Adonis Corporation's RegimeChange ploy, and doesn't take too kindly upon collecting herself.]]
!! Lalee Leewaylender
* KnowledgeBroker: He will share information on targets and loots in exchange for a tiny diamond.
* TakeThat: His schemes parodied questionable business practices, especially online communities, such as cryptocurrency and loot boxes.

!! Corazon Santiago
* AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs: [[spoiler: After the Refugee Camp Ambush, her mercs along with Facheaux' army will send massive forces to invade your holdings. This attack is very difficult to defend against and your militia stands little chance without help.]]
* CruelMercy: [[spoiler:While she is allowed to leave after her defeat, if the player gathered enough evidence of her conspiracy, she will be charged with war crimes.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: She is the security chief of a diamond mining operation in an unstable West African country, and has a prominent burn scar on the right side of her face. She's on your side, though. [[spoiler: Or so we are led to believe. In fact, she was responsible for creating the Legion, and only started working against them when the Major decided working for himself was more fun. ]]
* MilesGloriosus: She talks a big game about waging war on the Legion, but it is abundantly clear that she is a corporate stooge whose greatest asset is the ability to write checks with very large numbers on them.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: She appears only concerned about the conflict in Grande Chien only insofar as it's damaging the Adonis Corporation's financial bottom line [[spoiler:and eventually turns on you once upon plotting another RegimeChange attempt]].
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:Once she thought you have done enough or somehow managed to save Biff, she will call for a meeting to "clear things out", except it turns out to be Colonel Facheaux' trap. She also did the same with Biff early on by leaving them to die to the Legion.]]

!! Maman Liliane
* GoodIsNotSoft: Give you a quest to hunt down and kill the men that hurt her girls. And they weren't just men who roughed them up, you find them talking about how they really hurt them.
* MissKitty: Runs Le Lys Rouge (the Red Lily) in Pantagruel, and takes an ''extremely'' dim view of men who try to take advantage of her girls.

!! Chimurenga
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Can come across as kind of goofy and prone to spouting Communist slogans at the drop of a hat, but is actually pretty dang competent at his job. He uses the incompetent M.E.R.C. troops as cannon fodder while being completly open with A.I.M. as he knows they're actually competent, can play PR as well as anyone, and manages to secure a steady supply line of money from a liberated diamond mine. It's just bad luck and bad graphic design that kept him from getting farther than he did.
* ChummyCommies: A revolutionary in the finest socialist tradition, and a staunch supporter of anyone opposed to the Legion. And a friendly, stand up guy, too.
* HappilyEverAfter: One of the best resolutions of his quest line. You can have Chimurenga willingly retire and get together with [[spoiler: Maman Liliane]].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: If you can convince him that you and the [=LaFontaines=] stand a better chance of bringing peace and prosperity to Grand Chien than he does, he will gladly put his resources at your disposal. Chimurenga is a die-hard Communist, but his ultimate goal is to make people's lives better, not to amass power or impose an ideology for it's own sake.

!! Headshot Hue
* BodyHorror: Thankfully never shown on screen, but the name comes from surviving a through and through headshot. It never healed and for a couple hundred dollars he'll show it to your mercs.
* BoomHeadshot: 'Nuff said.
* MadeOfIron: The man not only survived a through and through headshot, he survived a open wound IN HIS BRAIN, and with no neurological loss.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Gets you to help him steal a shotgun from his friend Lurch. Because his friend Lurch suffered a lot more brain damage from the same bullet and he's worried that one day Lurch is going to kill himself or someone else forgetting he left a round in the chamber.
* NWordPrivileges: Actually gives a good rant on this if MD says that retard is not the accepted medical terminology anymore.
--> "No. Before retard it was Moron. Before that idiot. Before that simpleton. The important bit is not the word itself but the intent behind the word. It's why I can call Lurch a retard as I'm his friend. Anyone else calls him that and I'll make them one!

!! Granny Cohani
* ClusterFBomb: Oh yeah.
* FluffyTheTerrible: Was a part of a gang called the Coffee Beans. They're all over 60 and tough enough that they can get into gunfights with men literally half their age and win.
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: The chain smoking hard as nails old woman variety.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: With the Scoundrel perk, she'll apologize for being rude, wants to have one last fight with her old friends, refuses to sell to the Legion, and will pay you a lot of money to have a memento of her dearly departed friend.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Runs a gun store, openly cusses out and shoots the Legion, and will happily fight the Legion when they invade the Docks.

!! Istadi the Fisher
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite everything, he is an amazing fisher of junk. Enough so that the people that live in the Junkyard consider him an analogue to Merlin.

!! Sangoma
* TheCobblersChildrenHaveNoShoes: He is unable to cure his own family from a disease and it's hurting his reputation. Seeing as it took [[{{Panacea}} Metaviron]] to cure them, he can't be faulted for that.
* CouldntFindAPen: [[spoiler: Used his own blood to write out the chemical formula for Mustard Gas when the Refugee camp is attacked to give you a clue to what happened.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Used to be a Death Squad member before the Sprits compelled him to become a Shaman.]]
* WitchDoctor: Fitting for a DarkestAfrica setting. However he leans much more to the Doctor part of it, to the point he says that he must offer treatment to anyone that comes to him. So he's relieved when the Mercs killed the Legion harassing him. Also he doesn't promise miracles as he says he can't regrow a Legion member's scrotum when he [[PantsPositiveSafety blasted it off when he put his gun in his pants.]]

!! Colonel Facheaux
* AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs: [[spoiler: After the Refugee Camp ambush, his army along with Corazon's mercs will invade your existing holdings as well as taking over some previously Legion controlled areas you haven't conquered. Your militia stands little chance against this.]]
* AmbitionIsEvil: [[spoiler:He was already planning a coup even after the election]].
* BigBadDuumvirate: [[spoiler:With Santiago]].
* CavalryBetrayal: [[spoiler: If you don't visit the refugee camp when Santiago calls you, he will instead come for you when you are close to defeating The Major. This was initially disguised as the rescue party as La Fontaine was surprised when the ones rescuing him are mercenaries and not soldiers.]]
* DirtyCoward: Will try to run when he realized his base is under attack.
* FrameUp: [[spoiler: Killed everyone in the Refugee Camp to frame the player's mercenaries for the atrocities]].
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler: Gassing the Refugee Camp]].
* TheQuisling: [[spoiler:Facheaux knows he's simply the PuppetKing for the Adonis Corporation, but is still happy to work with Santiago anyway if it means getting to be the local man in charge and having some taste of power.]]
* SmugSnake: A smarmy, overconfident [[spoiler:and treacherous]] asshole with delusions of adequacy.
* WakeUpCallBoss: [[spoiler: The first encounter with his army in the Refugee Camp. Early in the game the you will mostly encounter the Legion army that is poorly armed and trained, but after meeting him you will start fighting against much better trained and equipped soldiers. Corazon's mercs are even deadlier but they both start appearing at around the same time.]]

!! The Major, a.k.a. [[spoiler: Maj. Spike Scallion]]
* AmbitionIsEvil: [[spoiler:Was working for Santiago before deciding it was more profitable (and fun) to take it all for himself. Even before that, it's suggested that taking a huge contract to work for North Korea changed him for the worse.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:He can be recruited if certain conditions are met.]] If the President is killed and [[spoiler:the Major is imprisoned (while Pierre is not free), Emma will offer him amnesty in return for putting down the renegade army units, which leads to [[RedemptionEqualsDeath his death and posthumous pardon]].]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:If he's captured and the President is alive, he chooses to take his own life in prison rather than face a tribunal.]]
* FallenHero: [[spoiler:Was once among A.I.M's most respected and decorated mercenaries.]] Now he's a ruthless warlord stripping Grande Chien of its wealth.
* FateWorseThanDeath: After his defeat, he will beg you to kill him rather than force him to face a war crimes tribunal.
* RightWingMilitiaFanatic: Leads the Legion, a rabidly nationalist militia, trying to oust the elected president.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:for Facheaux' and Santiago's plan of RegimeChange]]. By kidnapping the president, [[spoiler:he inadvertly saved him from TheCoup or assassination attempt]].
* WarForFunAndProfit: [[spoiler: The Legion was created to seize the diamond mines and split the profits between Adonis Corporation and the Major, but the Major thought it would be more fun and profitable to betray Adonis and go it alone.]]
