[[folder:The Group]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inuyasha_group.png]]
* AgeAppropriateAngst: The group is made up of teenagers and a child, so their impulsive actions and immaturity make sense.
* BadassCrew: You have to admit, that when they have their act together and aren't at each other's throats about something, they make a pretty amazing team.
* BabiesEverAfter: Inuyasha and Kagome have Moroha while Miroku and Sango have Kin'u and Gyokuto, and Hisui.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Routinely happens between Inuyasha/Kagome and Miroku/Sango.
* CannotSpitItOut: A lot of relationship problems could've been either made much easier or outright solved if the two couples had bothered to talk about them in a nice civil manner, instead of just letting their anger get the better of them.
* CommitmentIssues: Part of the group's romance issues stems from the fact that for various reasons, the Inuyasha/Kagome and Miroku/Sango pairings are too afraid of making anything official between them until the end.
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: All of them, to varying degrees. Miroku and Sango are so used to the mass destruction of their era that, while they're sympathetic to the loss of entire villages, they're also pragmatic about not being able to do much about it. Inuyasha takes the cake, considering that, in Episode 9, he thought nothing of stopping for a meal break in the middle of a ''corpse-strewn battlefield'', much to Kagome's disgust and horror.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Everyone except Kagome, who has a [[OpenMindedParent living mother]].
* DatePeepers: Every time Inuyasha and Kagome or Miroku and Sango have any romantic moments, the rest of the group will be spying and/or eavesdropping.
* DeadpanSnarker: Let's just say they have a lot to say about each other -- most of it less-than-friendly.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: The women in the group have a tendency to resort to physical attacks when the men cross a line or annoy them. Everyone seems to accept this behavior and goes along with it, perhaps partly to avoid the girls' wrath.
* FatalFlaw: As a result of being a group of teenagers and a child, they have been repeatedly shown to lack self-control (sans Miroku for the most part). As a result, the group has found itself in hot water on more than one occasion, thanks to being overly impulsive in many matters both, on and off of the battlefield.
* FireForgedFriends: Some more than others, but the entire group has been united in their common goal of taking down Naraku for {{revenge}} at what he's done to them.
* GenderEqualEnsemble: The team is made up of three males (Inuyasha, Miroku, and Shippo) and three females (Kagome, Sango, and Kirara).
* HitchhikerHeroes: Everyone on the team besides Inuyasha and Kagome.
* HotBlooded: The critical source of the group's constant bickering among themselves is that mostly because the majority of them tend to react impulsively to the most trivial matters. Shippo and Mizuki's conversation about the group's overall violent tendencies towards each other implies that it is the result of the teenage couples' collective immaturity.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kirara are all demons and/or half-demons who fight other demons.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: Despite being very touchy and high-strung with each other, they have shown to care a great deal about each other, even when they're too stubborn to admit it, even to themselves.
* ItsPersonal: Their beef with Naraku, who, in this order, murdered Kikyo and tricked Inuyasha into thinking she had betrayed him, placed a HereditaryCurse on Miroku's family, and destroyed Sango's hometown and brought her little brother BackFromTheDead to use as a weapon against her. Averted with Kagome, who, at first, only wants to help them and goes along with the revenge against Naraku because the rest of the group wants it, and in exchange for more help on her quest to restore the Shikon Jewel.
* {{Kid Hero}}es: All of them are teenagers or [[OlderThanTheyLook the equivalent]], with Shippo being the yokai equivalent of seven.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: As a group of teenagers and a child, when it comes to love and being in love, they tend to let themselves become somewhat irrational. The group's overall youthful impulsiveness, stubbornness, irritability, and immaturity don't help matters either, being the source of much of the group's bickering.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: Part of this group's FatalFlaw (besides their respective tempers and communication issues) is that they're all a total mess when it comes to love.
* OlderThanTheyLook: By the time of ''Yashahime'', which takes place several years after the orginal series, all of them look almost, if not exactly, the same as they did in the original series. While Inuyasha and Shippo have the excuse of being part or fully demon, and [[spoiler:Kagome, along with Inuyasha, was trapped under supernatural circumstances for 14 years]], the others don't. Sango in particular looks really well for someone who is pushing 40 by the time of ''Yashahime'' and who has already given birth three times.
* OnlyOneName: Everybody except Kagome. This is due to the times as most people, aside from the nobility, did not have family names.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Kagome, Shippo, Sango, Miroku, and Kirara all routinely fall victim to this trope whenever they go into battle teamed up with Inuyasha. Despite the fact that all of them have at least a few skills that could contribute to victory, Inuyasha usually does almost all or all of the heavy lifting in combat, and he virtually always is the one to deliver the final killing blow. Sometimes Inuyasha's companions will just stand in the background and make commentary about the fight, even though they have no valid reason not to participate.
* ParentalAbandonment: For as of yet unspecified reasons the main group, sans [[TeamPet Kirara]], are all [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse suspiciously missing]] from their children's lives in ''Anime/YashahimePrincessHalfDemon''.
* PoliteVillainsRudeHeroes: They're always bickering with one another over the smallest things. This contrasts them to the Band of Seven, who get along much better and cooperate even when they argue.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The gang consists of a [[HalfHumanHybrid half-dog demon]], a time-displaced OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent, a DirtyOldMonk, a demon hunter, a [[{{Sizeshifter}} size-changing]] cat demon, and a seven-year-old [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]].
* ShipperOnDeck: With Inuyasha/Kagome. Whenever Inuyasha and Kikyo have a romantic moment, the rest of the group is miffed with his indecisiveness, despite understanding the complications surrounding it. Especially with Sango, someone who takes love very seriously [[LoveMakesYouDumb to less than ideal degrees at times]], who even uses a ''sit command'' on Inuyasha. It obviously doesn't work. She even recounts one incident saying, dead serious if she were Kagome she would break Inuyasha's legs so he could never walk again, frightening Miroku, Kirara and Shippo. Kagome is can also be the Shipper On Deck regarding Sango and Miroku.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: When you think about it, they all came together in under a year, and while they do become close friends, they also constantly bicker amongst one another over the smallest things. It'll simply take more than time and a shared goal for everyone to get along smoothly, which may explain them being VitriolicBestBuds.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: In the beginning, particularly between Inuyasha and Kagome.
* TrueCompanions: They have all become this by the end of the series.
* UndyingLoyalty: Despite their squabbles, they'll always come together and support each other.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Inuyasha with ''everyone''. They care about him deeply and vice versa, but their shared stubbornness, irritability and lack of patience and maturity easily clash with Inuyasha's .... ''challenging" personality. Then again, all of them are 18 and under (or at least the equivalent of that) so it makes sense.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Every member except Kirara is mysteriously missing following the 20-year TimeSkip. Miroku and Sango are confirmed to be around, Inuyasha and Kagome are [[spoiler:later revealed to be sealed by Sesshomaru]] and Shippo is nowhere to be found until episode 39.

Kagome is a girl from the present era who finds herself in Japan's Sengoku era after falling down an old well in her family's Shinto shrine. She proves to be Kikyo's reincarnation, and discovers that she possesses strong spiritual powers resembling that of a {{miko}}. After she accidentally shatters the Shikon Jewel, she joins up with Inuyasha to find and reassemble the broken pieces.

----
* AbductionIsLove: Kagome gets to experience this from quite a few demons lusting for her. The most notable example is Kouga when he first meets her.
* AccidentallyBrokeTheMacGuffin: Kagome was the one who originally shattered the Shikon Jewel. She was ''trying'' to kill the demon that stole it.
* ActionGirl: Eventually she develops formidable archer skills.
* ActionSurvivor: When it all started, she was an [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent Ordinary Junior High Student]] stranded in a world she doesn't understand, but she slowly adapts and becomes a master archer and powerful miko.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Downplayed. In the manga, she rarely used the "sit" command in ways other than being absolutely necessary. In the anime, however, she regularly uses it to take her anger out on Inuyasha for the smallest of slights. Other than that, she remains caring and will get along with most people.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Brown eyes in the anime, blue eyes in the manga although is [[http://cati-art.deviantart.com/art/Inuyasha-Curiosities-Kagome-s-eye-color-286435093 debatable]].
** Even in the above link, her eyes appear more of a gray/hazel color in the manga than anything else. Many of the manga's covers and promotional art show her with gray eyes.
* AgeAppropriateAngst: Her tsundere tendencies can make more sense when you remember that she is a 15-year old girl and such is susceptible to mood-swings that can cause her to appear unpleasant at times, especially when you deal with the stuff she deals with and the equally emotionally-challenged Inuyasha.
* AllLovingHeroine: Unless you get on her bad side, she's nice to just about everyone.
* AmbiguousSituation: At the end of the series, it's left uncertain if [[spoiler:the time portal in the Bone Eater's Well remains open after Kagome returns to the past, or if Kagome is TrappedInThePast for good. In any event, she's [[IChooseToStay chosen to stay in the Feudal Era]].]]
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: While fighting off Naraku's heart in the form of a baby, Kagome loudly declares that her feelings of jealousy towards Kikyo mean she's in love with Inuyasha, much to the baby's annoyance as it allows her to break free from his grasp. Inuyasha subsequently breaks into the castle and rescues Kagome.
* AudienceSurrogate: She is the first to want to know what the hell is going on or to point out that the situation at hand is supernatural.
%%* BabiesEverAfter: ''Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon'' establishes that she and [=InuYasha=] had a daughter named Moroha, who follows in their footsteps to become a monster-slayer.
* BatheHerAndBringHerToMe: Sort of happens to her in one episode, though the villain intends to feed her to some immortality-fruit-bearing-tree rather than... [[SexualHarassmentAndRapeTropes what you'd normally expect]].
* BathingBeauty: She enjoys bathing and is frequently shown bathing early on in the series for {{fanservice}} purposes. More often than not, Inuyasha ends up [[AccidentalPervert walking in on her]] while she does so.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Inuyasha. EveryoneCanSeeIt, including her little brother, who's only 8.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Kagome is generally known for her kindness, but sometimes her mood can take a sharp turn towards irritability and unpredictability, especially when she's around Inuyasha. Being in a relationship with someone equally emotional can lead to explosive bouts of anger and unpleasantness, making some guys in her life avoid her until she cools off. Even Naraku was taken aback when he provoked her, causing her to unleash a powered-up arrow in a fit of rage. Kagome occasionally regrets her actions, like when she took out her anger on Inuyasha, who was only trying to help her after an incident with Kikyo.
* BigFancyHouse: The two-story house that she lives in with her family seems to be rather average... until the audience remembers that it's located on the grounds of a Shinto shrine, which sits ''atop of a hill in Tokyo'' (aka the city with the highest real estate prices in the world). But then again, the shrine has probably been in her family for generations.
* BirdsOfAFeather: While not as confrontational and tactless as Inuyasha, they strangely possess a few similarities. They're both terrible at keeping their emotions in check, leading to mood-swings that make it difficult for them to be around others and each other, especially when it comes to their stubbornness, jealousy, bad temper and irritability. They're also impulsive when it comes to helping those around them and each other. There's also how whenever she is back in her own time, hardly anything goes right for her, especially with school or her somewhat flaky friends.
* ABirthdayNotABreak: She was dragged into the whole mess with the Shikon Jewel on her fifteenth birthday.
* BrainyBrunette: Kagome is good at many academic subjects, especially mathematics, though she sometimes has nightmares of failing school due to her frequent absences. She brings her textbooks to the past for study during the group's short breaks, indirectly practices geometric trajectories as an archer, and her hair is dark brown in some manga panels (in the anime, it is consistently black).
* ButtMonkey: Strangely, she can be this often while back in her own time, with struggling grades, and friends who are supportive and helpful only around half of the time. Makes one think that this could be why she can be so easily irritated with Inuyasha.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: In episode 4, she's managed to return home and is fully prepared to go on with her life and forget about the feudal era... but Inuyasha and [[MonsterOfTheWeek Yura]] have other plans.
* ChangedMyJumper: In the second episode, a bandit remarks that her skirt is shorter than their kimono, and in the manga some people speculate that she's a youkai, but after that no one seems to notice. Of course, regarding the way other demons and the poor dress, her garb's not the most striking thing people are used to seeing.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: For example, she risks life and limb to save the vengeful spirit of a little girl from being DraggedOffToHell, and unhesitatingly saves Kikyo's life on more than one occasion. As she herself puts it to Kikyo in episode 151:
-->'''Kagome''': If there's a person right there who I can save and I'm told she can only be saved by me, of course I'll choose to save her!
* CleanDubName: In the Brazilian dub, she is known as Agome. In the Latin American dub, her name is pronounced as Aome. In both languages, "cago me" roughly means "I shit myself".
* ClingyJealousGirl: To some degree, but not as bad as other examples in the page because it's focused on Kikyo, her guy's ex, and her own former incarnation. It's inevitable that she would feel jealous/threaten/inadequate in such a situation.
* CombatMedic: She sometimes takes on this role when not participating in a fight, using modern era medical supplies to help people. Many other priestesses also take on this role, Kikyo included, and by the end of the series she takes up further priestess training that includes learning how to use herbs to create medicine.
* CoolBigSis: A surrogate one to Shippo since she looks after him following the death of his grandfather.
* DamselInDistress: Quite a few times and especially early in the series before she developed her archery and holy powers. She was a tempting target due to her ability to see jewel shards. She gradually grows out of it and graduates to an ActionGirl.
* DamselOutOfDistress: All those times she was captured she wasn't super helpless and docile. If she doesn't arrange her own escape, she will certainly be [[DefiantCaptive defiant.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Especially when interacting with Inuyasha, who [[SnarkToSnarkCombat gives as good as he gets]]. One good example is in Episode 10, when she's falling to her death while Inuyasha is fighting the Thunder Brothers:
-->'''Inuyasha''': Hold on, Kagome! I'll come for you as soon as I finish him off!\
'''Kagome''': Hurry! 'Cause gravity [[GravityIsAHarshMistress isn't exactly on my side here!]]
* DisappearedDad: The novels explain that he died in an accident when Kagome was little, therefore her family had to move into the Shinto temple owned by Grandpa Higurashi.
* DispelMagic: Because of the purifying properties of her Sacred Arrows, Kagome can dispel demonic magic like dispersing miasma, shattering barriers and even reverting the tessaiga to its dormant state.
* DoppelgangerGetsSameSentiment: Inuyasha initially had great difficulty differentiating Kikyo from her {{reincarnation}} Kagome, often referring to the latter by the name of the woman he knew. Inuyasha also became greatly discomforted when Kagome dresses in traditional feudal Japan clothes as it made her further remind him of Kikyo, leading Inuyasha to tell her to put her own weird modern clothes back on.
* DoppelgangerReplacementLoveInterest: Kagome angsts over the idea that Inuyasha sees her only as a replacement for Kikyo. Despite this, she knows she will still be in love with him so she goes along with it.
** This is played straight with Inuyasha. But zigzagged otherwise, since [[spoiler: Naraku's human heart loves Kikyo, without a shred of interest for Kagome.]] There's also Koga, who loves Kagome, but doesn't show any interest in Kikyo. Though Koga only met Kikyo after she was undead.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She frequently uses Inuyasha's cursed necklace to force him to the ground when he's being a jerk or she's dealing with her romantic angst, especially in the anime. Often exaggerated when she purposefully gives the command while on a bridge to make him crash through it, or uses it repeatedly to plow him into the ground. Other characters are not only perfectly fine with this, but usually opine that Inuyasha deserved it for annoying her.
* DudeMagnet: Multiple humans and demons alike have tried to win her affection.
* EekAMouse: She can handle {{youkai}}, blood, guts, wounds, man-eating rats, so-called "two-timing" boyfriends, time-travel, saving the world while trying to pass exams, lifting the spirits of the depressed, downtrodden and bullied and can even befriend the reclusive, the painfully shy, and aggressively hostile, but ask her to help a giant beast-faced [[HalfHumanHybrid hanyou]] in his herb garden when there's an earthworm in plain sight and she'll absolutely freak out.
* {{Expy}}: Arguably, given this is a Takahashi manga, she is an expy of Akane Tendou from ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''. Though she's generally gentler and less brash, and she's an outright NiceGirl (while Akane goes towards JerkWithAHeartOfGold territory) both are {{tsundere}}s with quite the temper, an absolutely emotion-based nature and kind of a jealous streak.
* EyeScream: Downplayed. [[spoiler: One small shard from Kanna's body did hit the eye but it did little to no permanent damage.]]
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: At first. As the series goes on, she adapts to the Feudal era due to how much time she spends there.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: In episode 52, when the fully demonized Inuyasha is going on a bloody rampage against a group of bandits, Kagome ineffectually runs after him while desperately shouting at him to stop. It never once occurs to her that she could simply give Inuyasha the "sit" command to get him to stop, especially since doing so successfully restrained his full demon form ''twice before.''
* FreakyIsCool
** This quote while Inuyasha's manhandling Shippo when they first meet him:
--->"A fox? It talks?! ''Cool!'' Let me touch him when you're done!"
** The first thing she does after encountering (an unconscious) Inuyasha is to ''tweak his ears''. It apparently is a family trait, as her mother does the same thing and her brother wants to do it next.
* GenkiGirl: Downplayed. She's more [[PluckyGirl plucky]] than energetic but can get really excited at times.
* GoshDangItToHeck: Very pronounced in the English dub, where she's the only main character to ''never'' swear: she doesn't even say "damn" or "hell".
* GreenEyedEpiphany: Getting jealous over Inuyasha's feelings for Kikyo is the main source of her realizing her own feelings for him.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: While Inuyasha tends to handle combat up close, Kagome tends to be more a "supporter" from long range with her bow and Miko powers, a fitting role seeing as she has no armor or close combat training.
* HairTriggerTemper: Downplayed. Kagome is a kind-hearted person who always shows goodwill towards others. However, certain situations or circumstances make her easily annoyed or distressed. When this happens, her temper can be quite alarming and intimidating.
* HeWillComeForMe: While [[spoiler: trapped inside the Shikon Jewel]] near the end of the series.
-->"Inuyasha will come... I believe in him."
* TheHeart: She put the group together and kept it together. She's a ParentalSubstitute for Shippou, emotional support for Sango, and steers Inuyasha to the path of heroism instead of jerkism.
* HolyHandGrenade: The bulk of her powers are holy spiritual powers.
* HotBlooded: Downplayed. It is worth noting that while she typically [[NiceGirl embodies kindness]], she has a remarkably limited capacity for patience and can easily become quite exasperated.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Throughout the series, Kagome is frustrated that Miroku and Sango seem to be falling for each other yet can't bring themselves to admit it, and she works tirelessly to get them together. However, in doing so she neglects to consider that her relationship with Inuyasha is basically at the same point as theirs.
* ICantSenseTheirPresence: When it comes to Naraku's detachment Kanna. As she is [[PowerOfTheVoid composed of void]], she has no aura for Kagome to sense.
* IChooseToStay: Eventually, [[spoiler: she decides to remain in the Medieval Era as Inuyasha's wife.]]
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Sometimes, especially later in the story, but by then, her abilities as a priestess have matured to the point when she can automatically nock an arrow and guide it to its target through sheer willpower.
* InformedAttribute: In the anime, her resemblance to Kikyo becomes this: in the manga, she and Kikyo do indeed look very similar. In the anime however, their designs are both subtly altered and they don't look much alike at all -- at a glance, Kikyo has a different hairstyle, smaller eyes, and paler skin. The most common thing about them is that they're both priestesses and both in love with Inuyasha. Indeed, the only time anime-version Kagome truly resembles Kikyo is when she's dressed as a priestess.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Kagome isn't always as straightforward as Inuyasha, but she sometimes speaks without considering the consequences, perhaps due to her youthful inexperience. Even when she's alone, she chides herself for her impulsive remarks.
* InterspeciesRomance: Falls in love with Inuyasha, a HalfHumanHybrid.
* ItsAllMyFault: She blames herself for [[spoiler: Kikyo's definitive death at Naraku's hands]] and is reduced to a sobbing wreck for being unable to save her.
* {{Joshikousei}}: She's almost never seen not wearing a SailorFuku.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: No matter how often her grandfather told her the Shikon Jewel history, she wouldn't remember it. [[spoiler: It seemed that the Shikon Jewel wouldn't let her remember.]]
* LightEmUp: Thanks to her flash light based powers.
* LimitedWardrobe: She actually does change outfits from time to time, but spends by far most of her time in her school uniform. WordOfGod is that Kagome wears it so much because the uniform is "durable and easy to clean."[[invoked]]
* MageMarksman: Magic Ranger variety, able to use a bow in addition to her spiritual powers.
* MagicSkirt: No matter how much she gets tossed around, her skirt never moves enough to show anything indecent. This was actually specifically stated in the production notes for the anime, with one of her character sheets having the note "No matter how rough the action, please never show her underwear". In the second episode, a dirty thug became an AccidentalPervert when he decided to lift up Kagome's skirt in the wonder of how small it was, thinking it was a badly undersized kimono; of course, her panties get exposed to everyone in the room, but never to the audience.
* TheMagicTouch: Kagome can [[PowerNullifier purify things defiled with evil power]] such as miasma simply by touching them, though large doses require more concentration and may require a medium of an arrow.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Mistress Centipede takes a chunk out of her body, but she doesn't seem to feel any pain afterwards, running and jumping as if nothing happened.
* MamaBear: To her daughter Moroha. Upon realizing the danger Moroha is in from [[spoiler:Kirinmaru]], she and Inuyasha made arrangements with Hachi to take their daughter away to safety not long after her birth.
* MarsNeedsWomen: Despite being human, Kagome ends up being the love interest (or at least a "lust interest") for quite a few demons throughout the series
* TheMatchmaker: Kagome works tirelessly to bring Sango and Miroku together. This pays off eventually, but it probably could have happened sooner if she simply explained to Miroku that random groping isn't the best way to a woman's heart.
* TheMedic: She takes this role in the team, helped by the medicines from her time as well as having the ability to purify wounds infected by demonic energy.
* {{Miko}}: She has miko powers [[spoiler:and at the end of the story becomes a real miko for a living]].
* MoralityPet: To Inuyasha; she's usually the one who gets him to help out those who need it. In fact, it's their relationship that eventually allows him to give up his desire to become a full-blooded yokai out of fear that he would attack her.
* MoodSwinger: As a teenager, though really nice usually, she isn't always in the best mood. It has been shown to be her FatalFlaw, ranging from being the primary source of her relationship issues with Inuyasha (with her hidden burning temper) to being the source of her impulsiveness.
* MsFanservice: All of the major females are subject to it, but Kagome gets most of the fanservice scenes. These happen mostly in the early parts of both the manga and anime, where her bathing scenes are more common. Whenever she's naked, the artists go to great lengths to show how big her breasts are and how curvy her body is. All throughout the series, there are also quite a few camera angles that exist only to show off her shapely legs. However, despite all the moments of fanservice she gets, the MagicSkirt trope is in full effect with her and her skirt never shows anything indecent.
* NervesOfSteel: Really, for an ordinary 15-year old high school student being flung into feudal Japan where she faces terrible demons and mortal danger on nearly a daily basis, Kagome never seems much fazed by it and always keeps her composure. Even before they become friends, Inuyasha is impressed with her bravery on several occasions.
* NiceGirl: Kagome is generally warm and friendly, particularly towards Inuyasha. However, there are rare times when she has to "sit" him because of his insulting behavior towards her or when he hits Shippo. Moreover, certain other flaws of his also set her off. Despite these few instances, Kagome usually remains kind and amicable towards Inuyasha.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: She was the one who shattered the Shikon Jewel into fragments in the first place.
* NoSell: Kagome is flat out immune to many things such as illusionary attacks and demonic poisons.
* TheOneWithAPersonalLife: While the rest of the group hunting jewel shards does so full time as they wander Japan, occasionally getting sidetracked but having left their outside social lives and homes behind, Kagome still tries to keep up with her family, friends, and schoolwork from her home time.
* OnlyTheChosenMayWield: She's the only one who can activate Inuyasha's restraining necklace, and also the only one who can take it off if she so chooses.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: ''Junior'' High but still, school was all she had to worry about until she fell into that well... She even continues wearing her sailor uniform.
* PervertRevengeMode:
** During the early part of their relationship, Inuyasha, uncomfortable with seeing her in a {{miko}} outfit due to her resemblance to Kikyo, tells her to [[TakeOffYourClothes take it off]]. [[AccidentalPervert His exact wording]] leads Kagome to bash him in the head with a rock.
** When they first meet Miroku, she initially insists to Inuyasha that he could be helpful to them and they should give him a chance... until Miroku grabs her butt.
--->'''Kagome''': I was wrong! Kill 'im!
* PlayingSick: Her cover for being in the feudal era all the time is sickness, in fact, the sickness are typical of old people. It's exaggerated when she's gone for months at a time. In the real world, somebody would've got suspicious by then, even with her family covering for her.
* PluckyGirl: Are demons and roughing it in Feudal Japan going to stop her? No, not at all. [[WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld She's more worried about her grades and boyfriend issues.]]
* PowerGlows: In her case, her miko power is a pinkish purple.
* PowerLimiter: [[spoiler: The Shikon no Tama kept her true spiritual powers sealed to protect itself.]]
* PowerNullifier: Kagome's main power is to purify demonic auras which can work to dissolve their attacks or even destroy them outright.
* PregnantBadass: [[spoiler: She was heavily pregnant with Moroha when she accompanied Inuyasha and Sesshomaru to destroy the Grim Comet that appears every 500 years. Though this is downplayed and subverted as her bump was not very noticeable and she was mostly observing from the sidelines while her husband and brother-in-law were doing all the work.]]
* {{Reincarnation}}: Of Priestess Kikyo... who is later resurrected, leading to a very awkward love triangle.
* RescueRomance: Kagome is rescued by Inuyasha on numerous occasions.
* SacredBowAndArrows: Her primary weapon is her bow and arrows infused with her priestess powers.
* SailorFuku: Her default outfit for adventuring is her middle school uniform, which has a sailor collar. [[spoiler:Though at the very end of the story, she's seen wearing a blazer uniform instead since she's now a high school student.]]
* SayMyName: Even ''more'' than Inuyasha! She says his name a total of '''971''' times, the majority being screams, in a total of ''167'' episodes.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Kagome usually wears her SailorFuku while in the feudal era (although it has a downside; a lecherous man once thought her skirt was a super-short kimono), though she does wear casual clothes on occasion. The series' creator Rumiko Takahashi has joked that Kagome keeps wearing it because it's easy to clean.
* ScrewDestiny: When the Baby attempts to [[spoiler:make her pull a FaceHeelTurn]] while repeatedly telling her she is destined to be an UnrequitedTragicMaiden, Kagome at first is depressed and considers his words, but then tells him that she is NOT and will NEVER be one of these.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: By the time of episode 3, she gets so sick of butting heads with Inuyasha that she decides to leave him and the feudal era behind. It doesn't last.
* SecondLove: For Inuyasha since his first love was her precious incarnation. So one could say she is kind-of both first and second, but don't tell her that.
* SensorCharacter: Kagome is the only member of the main cast who can sense Shikon jewel shards. This makes her a major asset to the team (particularly early in the series when her other skills are undeveloped), and also provides Inuyasha with a [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend convenient excuse to deny romantic involvement with her]]. He sometimes does this by derisively referring to Kagome as a "shard detector", much to her annoyance.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** She's a Sango/Miroku fangirl, especially in the anime where she imagines their wedding.
** In episode 90, she seems to enjoy the idea of Sota having a crush on Hitomi.
** When Ayame appears to reclaim the ChildhoodMarriagePromise Kouga made to her, Kagome sympathizes with her and not just because this would finally get him off her back, but because she sees that Ayame is profoundly and understandably hurt by his refusal to acknowledge her.
* StepfordSmiler:
** Very obvious when Kikyo almost dies for the second time and disappears: Kagome ignores her own distress and tells Inuyasha to go search for her... and her inner insecurity makes her the target of The Baby's {{Breaking Speech}}es.
** Every one of her friends -- [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent ordinary high school girls]] and super-powered youkai hunters alike -- are terrified of her smile when she's pretending that she's not upset.
** Sometimes, it happens if Inuyasha suffers the misfortune of setting Kagome off with snide comments. Kagome will crack a dangerous smile... then batter him into the ground with "Sit" commands.
* SupernaturallyYoungParent: [[spoiler: Due to being in Toga's grave for 14 years of Moroha's life, she looks the same since the first episode of Yashahime. Justified as time in the grave is slower than the outside world]].
* SupportingProtagonist: Kagome is the viewpoint character of the series, but a good deal of the plot (and fights) tend to focus on her other companions. As the series continues, she plays more and more of an active role.
* SympathyForTheDevil: She explains to her companions how Kanna truly did have emotions and [[spoiler: didn't want to die and that she told her Naraku's weakness.]]
* TeamMom: Early in the series, this is easily her most useful role on the team other then her ability to sense jewel shards. She keeps Inuyasha in check, counsels Sango and encourages her relationship with Miroku, and is a mother figure to Shippou. She also supplies the team with many modern conveniences from her time period, such first aid kits and modern food.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: She has this reaction when ManipulativeBastard [[BigBad Naraku]] stages an EvilPlan designed to turn the TrueCompanions against Sango and/or corrupt her by forcing her to kill her mind-controlled little brother and/or kill them all by luring them into a castle full of poisonous miasma. She locates him by the fragments of the Shikon no Tama he has, and fires a purifying arrow at him. [[HolyHandGrenade Which blows through a building outer wall, dissipates the toxic miasma,]] ''[[HolyHandGrenade and]]'' [[HolyHandGrenade blows off his arm.]] He is so stunned he just stands there while she fires a ''second'' arrow at him, which reduces him to [[NighInvulnerability a head]]. After that he flees, and it's a long time before he dares face her again. She's actually so pissed off that the mere ''beginning'' of her "I won't forgive you"-like declaration features a whole page and follows ''for several pages''.
* TookALevelInBadass: Slowly but surely it sets in, eventually turning Kagome from a doddering schoolgirl in a world she doesn't understand, to a badass with mastery of archery skills.
* TreasureChestCavity: Kagome was born with the Shikon Jewel hidden inside her body as a result of Kikyo, her previous life, having the jewel cremated along with her. When Mistress Centipede bites a chunk out of her, the Jewel falls out.
* TrueSight: She is immune to illusions.
* {{Tsundere}}: The ''Dere'' variety; sweet and nice usually, unless someone - most often Inuyasha or anyone who had the misfortune of threatening him- pisses her off somehow.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend:
** She will threaten and even blast anyone who threatens Inuyasha. This is often those much larger and more dangerous than her.
** This may explain in a way why she gets so agitated wherever Inuyasha sees Kikyo, who once resurrected tried to kill him even after learning that Naraku was responsible for her death. Jealousy and self-esteem issues aside, she fears that Kikyo still wanted to kill him for senseless reasons.
* WasTooHardOnHim: She feels this way when she realizes that she gets too worked up and overreacts towards Inuyasha. An example is in episode 151, where she is upset after having saved Kikyo and does not receive gratitude from being accused of wanting Kikyo gone so she wouldn't have a rival for Inuyasha's affections anymore.
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: Regardless of how much time she spends in the Feudal era, she still does have to go back to school every once in a while.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: She is a NiceGirl who becomes a miko with holy powers.
%%* WillTheyOrWontThey: She has a rocky relationship with Inuyasha.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: Seriously, be careful not to anger her or else her super-powered arrows might take you down or knock you straight to the ground. So, make sure to stay on her good side.
-->'''Sota''': You know Kagome. When she's in a bad mood, you better stand clear!

A young, low-ranking, nomadic Buddhist monk, Miroku possesses a Kazanna ("wind tunnel" or "air void") in his hand, a miniature black hole which sucks in anything if it's not kept magically sealed. The wind tunnel is the product of a curse originally put on Miroku's grandfather by Naraku that dooms Miroku's family to an early death unless it can be removed by killing Naraku first. To that end and after an awkward first encounter, Miroku joins forces with Kagome and Inuyasha.

Although Miroku has considerable spiritual power, he is not a very devout Buddhist (he usually uses his religion as an excuse when it's convenient for him) and frequently uses his status to manipulate people into giving him food, money, clothing, shelter etc. He is a skilled con artist and a HandsomeLech who habitually flirts and fondles any pretty girl he meets, usually asking them to "bear his children" so that they can carry on the mission to kill Naraku if he doesn't succeed.
----
* AccidentalPervert: Surprisingly enough, there are times like this. Such as his first appearance where he saw Kagome bathing in a hot spring, which he only did because he had been bathing at another nearby spring, and was surprised to hear someone else. Or in the second movie, where he noticed Akitoki peeping on the girls and was assaulted when he tried to confront the guy about spying on them.
* ActionDad: In the epilogue, [[spoiler:Miroku is still in the youkai slaying business with Inuyasha as his partner. Back at home, he has Sango and their three children waiting for him. The first episode of the sequel anime shows Miroku can protect some villagers from the Root Head youkai, although he laments that he isn't as powerful now that he doesn't have the wind tunnel in his hand.]]
* AmazonChaser: During his LoveConfession to Sango, he admits that he can't see her as an ordinary woman but a [[ActionGirl comrade]]. Sango takes this as an insult until he reveals that it's actually a big part of his attraction to her.
* AncestralWeapon: Miroku's staff was his grandfather's before him.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: After [=InuYasha=] tells him he intends to use the Shikon Jewel to become a full youkai, Miroku asks if he's ever heard of the Shikon Jewel's power being used for good and then nails him with "When you become full youkai using the Shikon Jewel... what if you decide to kill and eat Shippo and Kagome?" [=InuYasha=] scoffs at this, but after awakening his full power and almost doing exactly what Miroku predicted, he [[spoiler:gives up on wanting to become a full youkai.]]
* AwesomeButImpractical: His Wind Tunnel is easily the strongest attack for most with the series with only the Meidō Zangetsuha approaching it, but it's also uncontrollable, and using it makes it just a little bit wider, hastening his own death. Plus, BigBad Naraku always has some hell bees on hand to prevent Miroku from using it on him, as absorbing the bees would also result in him absorbing a lethal amount of poision.
* BadassInDistress: There are a few situations where he is rescued by Inuyasha or Sango. The most notable case with Sango involved her covering the Hiraikotsu with poison to save him, destroying it in the process and setting off an entire story arc to get it fixed.
* BadassNormal: He's a monk who's expertise is in the spiritual, but he's anything but helpless against physical threats. While not as skilled or strong as Sango or Inuyasha, he can hold his own in a fight well enough. Not to mention he's often seen sprinting alongside Inuyasha, who is noticeably faster than typical humans. The only other member of the group who can keep up with Inuyasha's speed being Kirara while she's flying.
* BadassPreacher: He is a Buddhist monk who slays demons (or at least pretends to).
* BadPowersGoodPeople: He has the power to make anything disappear into oblivion. He only uses it against violent and hostile youkai.
* BarrierWarrior: He can create small barriers.
* BeatTheCurseOutOfHer: He does this in episode 132 to the [[DemonicPossession possessed village women and Sango]]. It's less extreme than most examples; it only amounts to him attaching {{Paper Talisman}}s to either the women or his fist and then punching them in the gut, forcing them to cough up the [[FetusTerrible baby salamander demons]] that were controlling them.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Inuyasha. He's always trying to give him advice and trying to make him take things more calmly and think things through first. As the relationship develops Inuyasha starts to return the favor.
* BlessedWithSuck: [[IncrediblyLamePun Literally]]. His Wind Tunnel can suck up anything, but it will eventually kill him and sucking up poison and sharp objects will only make his death occur that much sooner.
* BloodFromEveryOrifice: He ends up absorbing so much of Naraku's miasma through the Wind Tunnel that he bleeds from the [[BloodFromTheMouth mouth]], [[DeadlyNosebleed nose]], [[TearsOfBlood eyes]], and ears.
* BrokenHero: He's easygoing, carefree and cheerful, even when he'll die very young via being swallowed by his own hand.
* BromanticFoil: To Inuyasha by being more of a flirt and a different sort of relationship trouble.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He flirts, cons, and generally comes across as a ''terrible'' Buddhist, but he wields a substantial amount of holy power and proves to have a deep core of spirituality when it really counts.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: Downplayed since he does flirt, grope, and peeks on Sango every chance he gets in the series ([[EveryoneHasStandards after she's properly coped with the traumatic loss of her family and village]]). However, he never actually asks her to bear his child as he does literally every other attractive woman he meets. (Sango herself even brings this point up and wonders why he's never asked her.) He finally does once he's become serious about a RelationshipUpgrade between them and, unlike how he's asked other women in a comedic manner, when he asks Sango he's completely serious and it's essentially a marriage proposal; with him saying he wants a real life and future with her.
* CaperRationalization: As revealed in the finale, he's continued his ConMan ways, much to Inuyasha's annoyance. Miroku justifies it by pointing out he has children to feed.
* TheCasanova: The series implies he used to have sex with the many women he seduced (WordOfGod confirms it) and he generally acts as a successful charmer to the young and attractive women they come across in their journies. [[invoked]]
* CastFromLifeSpan: He can use the Wind Tunnel, but each time he does it puts him a little closer to death because each use expands the circumference of the circle. If hell bees are around, CastFromHitPoints adds to his trouble because they poison him.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Will you bear my children?"
* TheCharmer: He's a very good sweet-talker and he can charm his way out of trouble or get whatever he wants.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: When the group runs full-tilt with Sango, Kagome, and Shippo riding on Kirara's back, he runs alongside Inuyasha. Think about that; he ''runs as fast'' as Inuyasha. Clearly, his monastic education included more than just memorizing sutras.
* ChivalrousPervert: He is capable of being noble and a gentleman, to the incredulity of both Inuyasha and Sango.
%%* CombatCommentator
* CommitmentIssues: Due to being cursed, Miroku's goal seems to be to have as many kids as possible without attaching himself to any of their potential mothers. He finally commits to a real future with Sango and asks, if they survive their war with Naraku, if she'll come live with him and raise a family together. In ''Final Act'', he further comments that he's serious about her and meant his promise.
* ConMan: His favorite trick is to, upon arriving in a town, single out a particularly large and wealthy-looking house and announce that it is "threatened by evil spirits," which he then generously offers to exorcize in return for a meal and a place to stay for the night. In one episode, there actually ''is'' a monster in the village - this causes the entire main cast to express surprise.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Part of his story arc in ''Yashahime''; Miroku acknowledges that he was far too dependent on the Wind Tunnel and misses having its power at his disposal. This leads to him embarking on a 1000-day journey WalkingTheEarth to train and attain spiritual power rivaling it.
* CursedWithAwesome: His curse really ''is'' a curse, but in an admirable example of making the best out of a bad situation, he uses it as a very powerful weapon as well.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was ForcedToWatch his father die by being sucked into his Wind Tunnel when he was a little boy until all that was left was a huge hole where he was standing at.
%%* DeadpanSnarker
* DirtyOldMonk: While far from old, he is a ''very'' perverted Buddhist monk, groping and asking almost every woman he meets to bear his children.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Well, not everyone, per se. Several non-important characters refer to him as "Hoshi-sama", due to his status as a Buddhist monk. Sango, however, is the only member of the group to only refer to him as "Hoshi-sama", rather than his name.
* FeelNoPain: After taking Yakurou Dokusen's "medicine", so he's able to suck any poison into his Wind Tunnel and keep fighting even though it's still killing him.
* FightsLikeANormal: If you think he can't do shit without the Wind Tunnel, you are seriously dead wrong. He can use his monastic staff for effective striking and puts up decent combat battle.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: There are quite a few battles the group gets into that he could easily win in seconds by using the Wind Tunnel, but does not do so without any valid reason stopping him. Possibly justified, as each use of the Wind Tunnel makes it grow and shortens his lifespan -- but that doesn't explain all the times he uses it when it ''isn't'' absolutely necessary.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Not to the same degree as Inuyasha, but the rest in the group certainly aren't appreciative of his lechery and ConMan nature.
* FreudianSlip: When he first sees Kagome bathing nude with a large shard of the Shikon Jewel hanging in her cleavage, he remarks that "they're--I mean it's--huge!" [[note]] The line was an English dub-only addition. For the Japanese version, he was only remarking on the size of the Shikon Jewel within Kagome's possession, in a surprisingly uncharacteristic moment of IgnoreTheFanservice.[[/note]]
* FuelMeterOfPower: The Wind Tunnel ''will'' kill him when it expands wider than his palm.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: In the later chapters of the manga, after he absorbs a massive amount of Naraku's miasma via the Wind Tunnel, the wounds inflicted by it cause massive scars that extend all the way up to his right arm and continue to spread every time he uses the Wind Tunnel thereafter.
* GoodShepherd: Vices aside, he's a heroic holy man.
* HandsomeLech: He's a good-looking skirt-chaser.
* HereditaryCurse: The Wind Tunnel was first placed on his grandfather and passed down from his father to him.
* HolyHandGrenade: As a monk it is to be expected that he has holy powers effective against demons.
* ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne: When Inuyasha calls him a "fake lechering monk":
-->"I may be a lecher, but how ''dare'' you call me a fake!"
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: When Sango is courted by a nice rich guy who only wants to make her happy, he seriously thinks they should let her go on the basis that due to her traumatic life, she deserves nothing more than a happy life with a man who genuinely loves her.
* ItsPersonal: Naraku cursed his family and every male descendant in his line will be cursed until Naraku is dead. He was also forced to witness his father's violent and premature death because of said curse.
* JackOfAllTrades: Unlike Inuyasha and Sango, his abilities are not purely offensive. He can create barriers, perform demon warding rituals, and, in the games, can even heal using talismans.
* JustifiedCriminal: Invoked; in the DistantFinale, he continues being a ConMan and swindling people, justifying it by stating [[spoiler: he has a growing family to provide for; he and Sango have had three children in the past three years]]. It doesn't stop Inuyasha from calling him out on it.
* KryptoniteIsEverywhere: The Saimyoshou are always around preventing him from using his curse.
* LadykillerInLove: He's an unrepentant womanizer who falls in love with Sango, not that it stops his flirting one bit. Cue Hiraikotsu.
* LovableSexManiac: He gropes unsuspecting women and even asks his infamous question to young girls, to the disgust of his traveling companions. (He makes it a point to state that he never actually touches any young girls, though.)
* LoveableRogue: He'll do anything to have a comfortable and enjoyable life, whether it's conning, lying or even stealing to get food, lodgings, money and women.
* {{Lust}}: Runs in his family, and one of the reasons his grandfather ended up with the Wind Tunnel, is that one of the beautiful women that he groped was in fact Naraku in disguise. He'll even intentionally fall for tricks and jump into obvious HoneyTraps if it means getting a chance with a girl. When it comes to Sango, he particularly loves groping her at ''every'' opportune time (primarily her rear end and one episode has him giving her a leering gaze as she walked in front of him) and it becomes a running gag for him to grope her followed by her hitting him ''quite'' hard in response. Not that it ever stops him from doing so yet again.
* MagicalGesture: When using his spiritual powers, he many times accompanies it with hand gestures (probably Mudras).
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Even his proposal had this as he didn't promise to stop flirting with other woman during it.
* MeaningfulName: "Miroku" is the Japanese name for [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maitreya Maitreya]], a figure who according to Buddhism will one day descend to earth and become the future Buddha.
* MomentKiller:
** Tender moments between Miroku and Sango are most often ruined by Miroku's wandering hands.
** On one hilarious occasion, when he managed to keep his hands to himself, ''she'' reached around to touch ''his'' rump -- checking for a tail, to make sure he wasn't [[AsianFoxSpirit Shippo]] in disguise.
** On another rare moment, Miroku tries to comfort her which he usually would've ruined with his wandering hands, however, Miroku remains perfectly chivalrous and prepares to walk away. Sango's [[LampshadeHanging lampshading]] of the usual routine, arguably, is the starting cause of the moment killer.
-->'''Sango''': That's it?\
'''Miroku''': Hm?\
'''Sango''': Well it's just that usually after the encouragement you try to do something lecherous.\
'''Miroku''': ''[smiles, sighing]'' Sango... ''[places his hand on her breast]'' If that's all you wanted you should have said so.\
''[cue [[RunningGag slap]]]''
%%* MrExposition
%%* MrViceGuy
* NakedFirstImpression: He first met Kagome while they were bathing in the same hot spring, but she didn't realize it.
* NoSell: He can usually breathe through miasma unimpeded like Kagome thanks to his sacred powers but this doesn't work as well the more powerful the poison is.
* NunTooHoly: Well, more like [[SpearCounterpart Monk Too Holy]], but the motif applies. [=InuYasha=] draws on lots of stories from Japan's Feudal Era and stories about Buddhist monks acting in a very ''un''monkly fashion date back at least that far.
* PaperTalisman: They have multiple uses, some creating barriers while others are thrown like weapons that paralyze or destroy demons.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father was sucked into his own Wind Tunnel when Miroku was a little kid, and we never really hear about his mom.
* PowerIncontinence: As a direct result of the "power" being the product of a curse, Miroku has to keep the Wind Tunnel sealed with holy beads to turn it on and off. He can't control it otherwise.
* PowerOfTheVoid: The Wind Tunnel is a void in his palm that will devour anything and everyone.
* PowerPalms: The Wind Tunnel lies in the palm of his right hand.
* RescueRomance: He rescues Sango from a few situations, though she does the same for him to a lesser extent as well.
* SexyPriest: He's a Buddhist monk and quite the ladies' man.
* SinsOfOurFathers: The Wind Tunnel is a curse passed down to him from his father and grandfather.
* TheSmartGuy: He's a pretty decent spiritualist, has a good bit of knowledge of the supernatural... [[StreetSmart and a mind made for Vegas]]. He's also the one always asking the right questions for everyone so that they have the right information to defeat their enemies, and explaining to everyone, including the audience, what's going on.
* StepfordSmiler: Looks and acts carefree and dirty-minded, but deep down he's ''very'' troubled because he knows he's getting closer and closer to death.
* StoryBreakerPower: The Wind Tunnel would be this if not for the fact that Naraku always has some way to keep him from using it.
* SuperPowerMeltdown: The Wind Tunnel expands over time and will eventually grow large enough to consume him.
* TooPowerfulToLive: Not Miroku himself, but the Wind Tunnel. It obviously outclasses Tessaiga as a weapon, so Naraku shows up and has ways to keep Miroku from using the Wind Tunnel so he doesn't render everybody else pointless.
* UrbanLegendLoveLife: While he does charm the ladies, there's never proof in the series that he has actually been with one. It's hinted that the actual reason he didn't defend himself when Shima claimed to have lost her virginity to him (she lied), is that he didn't remember if it was true or not; implying that he has slept with such a large number of women, he couldn't even remember if one of them was Shima. The closest proof was when he seduced a woman to the point that he was on top of her but she turned out to be possessed. (WordOfGod confirms that, yes, he has [[ReallyGetsAround slept around a lot]].)[[invoked]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Male example. He doesn't necessarily feel the need to get involved every time someone takes a more-than-friendly interest in Sango if he thinks they respect her and stand [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy a chance of making her happy]]. If someone is taking her by force, however, he will ''go for the kill''. He doesn't just get violent, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness his whole manner of speech changes as well]]; going from mild and polite to just as potty-mouthed and crude as Inuyasha.
* WalkingTheEarth: He's been doing this during the TimeSkip in ''Yashahime'' instead of being with his family. The exact reasons remain unknown. By the time he meets Towa, he had been training in the mountains for 800 days out of 1000 days (2 years and 70 days out of 2 years and 270 days) in order to obtain divine power with occasional visits from his family but being estranged with his son.
* WeaponsThatSuck: [[CursedWithAwesome The Wind Tunnel as his family uses it]] pulls things into a void.
* TheWorseningCurseMark: How the Wind Tunnel works. Once a year, it will expand and grow more powerful, until it breaches the confines of his palm and consumes him. It can also be damaged by outside sources, which accelerates its growth even further.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: He watched his father be consumed by his own Wind Tunnel so he has a good estimate of when it will happen to him. At one point, his own is damaged and this accelerates its growth. [[spoiler:Throughout the finale, he's one good shock away from death]].
* WhatTheHellHero: He once asked an 11-year old girl to bear his child, Kagome and Sango -- quite understandably -- chew him out for it. He insists he never touched her nor had any intention of doing so.

Raised from a young age to be a formidable fighter, 16 year old Sango is a YamatoNadeshiko coming from a village of taijiya (professional demon slayers). She is the sole survivor of the massacre of her entire village by Naraku's hand, (including Sango's father and little brother Kohaku). After she recovered from the massacre, she is tricked into thinking that Inuyasha is the culprit and attacks him, but soon discovers that Naraku was responsible and joins Inuyasha's group to take revenge.

Sango's primary weapon is Hiraikotsu, an enormous [[PrecisionGuidedBoomerang boomerang]] made from demon bones, but she also has various hidden blades and poison potions stored in her armor and is knowledgeable about many varieties of youkai and how to fight them. Her cat companion Kirara aids in combat and also serves as her steed.

* ActionGirl: A trained demon hunter and fighter.
* ActionMom: [[spoiler:After marrying Miroku, Sango must stay at home to look after their three children. The first episode of the sequel anime shows she can still help out with some demon slaying when the village is being attacked by Root Head.]]
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the manga, she wasn't introduced until immediately after the story arc involving [[ImAHumanitarian Tokajin]]. In the anime, she's introduced far earlier, whereas Tokajin doesn't make an appearance until after Inuyasha learns the Backlash Wave.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Genderflipped; Sango will do ''anything'' to save Miroku.
* AncestralWeapon: The Hiraikotsu belonged to her grandfather Shako, as shown in the flashback where he handed the Sacred Jewel to Kikyo.
* AngstComa: Falls into one when she first joins Inuyasha's group, not waking up for ten days. While a big chunk of it is due to the wounds she suffered beforehand, Miroku believes that at least part of it is because thanks to Naraku, Sango has literally lost ''everything'' she cared about.
* ArentYouGoingToRavishMe On the rare occasions when Miroku sits next to her without attempting to feel her up, Sango is so surprised by this that she often asks why not. She doesn't ''actually'' want him to, mind, she's just (pleasantly) surprised.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:Marries Miroku and starts a family, already having three kids in three years; twin girls and one boy.]]
* BadassInDistress: Sango is rescued by Miroku multiple times throughout the series. The most notable occasion is where she nearly kills him in a fight to free her from demon possession.
* BadassNormal: The only member of Inuyasha's group with no supernatural powers of her own, and yet her job is killing creatures that ''do'' have supernatural powers, i.e. demons. She has such strong combat abilities, however, that she's by ''no means'' defenseless and was possibly the best fighter in her village - at sixteen no less. She even comes close to killing Miroku with ease when she's brainwashed. He even comments after the battle that he was positive she was gonna kill had he not freed her and required heavy bandaging for the wounds she managed to inflict.
* BadWithTheBone: Hiraikotsu is made of purified youkai bones.
* BallisticBone: Hiraikotsu, since it's a boomerang made of bones.
* BattleAura: When Sango is pissed off she can manifest a BattleAura that can send even ''Inuyasha'' ducking for cover. This even though Sango is [[TheTeamNormal the only member of the]] team [[BadassNormal with no supernatural powers whatsoever]]. It's played for laughs.
* BattleBoomerang: Her main weapon is a giant boomerang called Hiraikotsu.
* BigSisterInstinct: She is ''extremely'' protective of Kohaku and harm coming to him is also an easy way to make her angry.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Has a hidden retractable blade in her right sleeve.
* BlemishedBeauty: Though not seen often, she has a massive scar on her back from where she was stabbed by the weapon of her possessed brother.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: In episode 131, she get possessed by a demon egg and nearly kills Miroku as a result.
* BrokenBird: Her family and village were tricked and massacred by Naraku, all in front of her, who proceeded to resurrect her brother as a brainwashed soldier against her. Arguably, she suffered the worst from Naraku within her group.
* BuriedAlive: After being stabbed by her brother and repeatedly shot with arrows, she was thought to be dead and was buried along with the rest of her murdered family. Turned out she ''wasn't'' dead and she digs her way out of her own grave despite being severely wounded and near mutilated.
* ChainPain: One of her many weapons is a chain.
* ChangingClothesIsAFreeAction: Played straight at least once in the anime where she changes from her normal clothes to her armor in a second, ''while leaping''. Usually, she averts it though, either having some time to change, fighting in her kimono or already wearing her armor since the beginning.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: She's a professional demon slayer and has trained for years. Case in point: the Hiraikotsu is as big as she is and is as heavy as it looks, and she carries and throws it like it was made of paper.
* ChildSoldier: She's a highly skilled demon hunter and is only 16 and she likely started her training at 11.
* ChosenConceptionPartner: Miroku flirts with every pretty woman he sees, but Sango is his true choice. When he asks her to bear his children, he ''means it''. [[spoiler:In the GrandFinale, she has married him and given him three children.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: Whenever Miroku flirts with other girls, cue such a scary DeathGlare even Inuyasha is scared. Gets even more pronounced after Miroku proposes to her and they're technically dating; to which she'll drag him off for a sound beating.
* CombatPragmatist: Being a demon slayer, she's perfectly fine using all sorts of tools to take out her enemies.
* CoolBigSis: She's a good and caring older sister to Kohaku.
* CuteBruiser: She almost hits as hard as [=InuYasha=], but Miroku has the hots for her for a reason.
* CrazyPrepared: Due to the nature of her job as a Demon Slayer, she habitually carries a lot of backup weapons, ropes, all kinds of poisons and a gas mask. All to deal with various types of demons. She even knows a few rituals.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: She has several memories of her father, where he is teaching her something or showing how much he cares about her and Kohaku.
* DemonSlaying: The MainCharacters do a lot of this in general, but for Sango it's both her profession and a family tradition.
* {{Determinator}}: She was stabbed with a scythe in her back, got hit with several arrows and was buried alive. But instead of dying, she just got pissed, dug herself out, and proceeded to hike for miles and fight Inuyasha (who she thought had destroyed her village), all this while literally bleeding to death.
* DistressBall: Sango picks this up a few times, seemingly to give Miroku a chance to show his heroism and devotion to her. The most notable case is in episode 131, where she gets mad at Miroku, runs off to find him, and gets captured without putting up any resistance, resulting in her getting possessed by a demon egg and an epic battle with Miroku where he fights to free her from demon control.
* DoomedHometown: Courtesy of Naraku; he arranged a plan for demons that were itching for revenge on the village of demon slayers so he could steal the jewel shards they collected.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Sango frequently hits/slaps/bludgeons Miroku for groping her (before their engagement) and flirting with others (after it).
* DualWielding: She often fights with both Hiraikotsu and her short sword at the same time.
* DudeShesLikeInAComa: Genderflipped where she kissed Miroku while he was unconscious [[spoiler: and on the brink of death]] before leaving to fight Naraku.
* DrivenToSuicide: She's convinced at one point that the only way to save her brother is to kill him and then herself. [[spoiler: She doesn't go through with it when Inuyasha convinces her she still has the chance to free her brother.]]
* EmpathicWeapon: Her giant boomerang, Hiraikotsu, contains demon spirits.
* FeelNoPain: While serving as Naraku's UnwittingPawn, he embeds a jewel shard in her body that does this to her, with the idea that she would fight Inuyasha to the death if she didn't know how badly she was hurt. Indeed, Inuyasha has to explicitly point out to her that she was bleeding all over the place during their fight. When Naraku later retrieves the shard from her body, Sango is promptly incapacitated from the pain and ends up falling into a coma for over a week.
* GuiltComplex: She tends to blame herself a lot, it doesn't matter if it really is her fault or not.
* HeartbrokenBadass: She's lost her family and hometown thanks to Naraku.
* HiddenWeapons: Where to begin… a hidden BladeBelowTheShoulder in her right arm, a chain in her right elbow guard, and different kinds of poison hidden all over her armor.
* HimeCut: When not fighting her hair takes this form; even and straight bangs, long length and cheek-length sidelocks. It fits her YamatoNadeshiko aspect.
* HotForPreacher: She's in love with the lecherous Buddhist monk Miroku (which is also implied to being her FirstLove). [[spoiler:In the epilogue, three years later, they've gotten married and have had three children.]]
* ItsPersonal: Naraku murdered her family and destroyed her village, tricked her into thinking Inuyasha was responsible and brainwashed her brother.
* JackOfAllStats: She's strong but not as strong as Inuyasha, she's intelligent but not as much as Miroku and she's very knowledgeable about youkai but not as much as Myoga.
* LadyOfWar: Befitting a YamatoNadeshiko, she's calm and graceful in battle.
* LastOfHerKind: Thanks to Naraku, she's the last of the demon slayers. [[spoiler: Until Kohaku is brought back, anyway]].
* LoveMakesYouDumb: Sango commits some major blunders as a result of her concern for Kohaku and Miroku. These result in nearly getting herself and them killed on a few occasions, as well as nearly murdering Rin. It may be part of the reason she gets so singe with Inuyasha with how he handles his indecisiveness with Kikyo and Kagome.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Hiraikotsu is impressively good as a shield, even withstanding attacks like the Wind Scar and the Kongosoha.
* LuminescentBlush: She blushes a lot, basically every time Miroku is either being perverted or romantic towards her.
* MadeOfIron: In her debut appearance alone, she survives becoming a HumanPincushion from arrows and a kusarigama blade to the back, and proceeds to not only [[RiseFromYourGrave claw her way out of her own grave]], but hike for miles to fight Inuyasha, who Naraku had blamed for the destruction of her village, all while bleeding out.
* MasterPoisoner: She has extensive knowledge in the preparation of different kinds of poisons and how they affect youkai.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: Late in the series she has to get Hiraikotsu repaired after [[WreckedWeapon using poison on it]]. After doing so, it can tear through demonic auras and is even capable of stopping Naraku from regenerating.
* MsFanservice: She has a few gratuitous bath scenes, sometimes we see her undress and change into her battle outfit, her demon-slaying outfit is tight-fitting, she is a frequent victim of Miroku's groping, a few shots exist only to show off her breasts and butt.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Her weapons include the Hiraikotsu, a wakizashi (small sword), a chain and a hidden blade.
* MyGreatestFailure: Being unable to prevent Kohaku's death hits hardest of all her losses. [[spoiler: Lucky for her, he eventually gets better.]]
* NamedWeapons: Hiraikotsu ("Bone that flies back")
* NotQuiteDead: She survived being stabbed and shot with arrows.
* ParentalAbandonment: We never see her mother, and her father is killed by her brother when he's under Naraku's control.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: Naraku gives her the choice between killing Rin to kill Naraku in order to save Miroku's life, or saving Rin and letting Miroku die. She chooses to [[spoiler:save Miroku but Kagome manages to save Rin just in time. Sango promptly offers her life to Sesshoumaru as payment for her attempt on Rin's life, only asking to let her see the battle won and chance to see Miroku a final time, but Sesshoumaru lets her live.]]
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: Hiraikotsu will always return to her hand.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She's dark-haired, fair-skinned, and considered beautiful by several other characters.
* RedemptionEarnsLife: [[spoiler: The main reason Sesshomaru doesn't kill her for nearly killing Rin is that she later saved her by giving Rin her gas mask when Sango herself desperately needed it (and also sincerely apologizing to her; though Rin doesn't know what happened and is confused).]]
* RescueRomance: Miroku rescues her on multiple occasions, though she does the same for him to a lesser extent.
* RiseFromYourGrave: Dug herself out of her grave.
* ScarsAreForever: She has a scar on her back from where Kohaku's kusarigama impaled her.
* SensualSpandex: Her demon-slaying armor isn't really spandex, but it is tight-fitting and accentuates everything.
* ShootingSuperman: In Mt. Hakurei she throws her [[BattleBoomerang Hiraikotsu]] at [[BlowYouAway Kagura.]] The latter wastes no time calling her a fool for this before redirecting Sango's weapon back at her.
* SoleSurvivor: Of the demon slayer massacre and it was a near thing; she was buried with wounds that appeared fatal.
* SurvivorGuilt: Blamed herself for her clan's demise and especially for her brother's death.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: She's not fooling anybody hiding her crush for Miroku:
-->"It's not like I'm jealous or anything."
-->"It's not really like I expected you'd be in love with me or anything."
* TheTeamNormal: She has no superpowers, she's simply a very skilled, very knowledgeable fighter.
* TomboyishPonytail: Downplayed; she wears her hair in a ponytail whenever she fights to keep it out of the way, but wears it loose when she's not fighting. Personality-wise, she's more of a YamatoNadeshiko and LadyOfWar than a tomboy.
* ThatDidntHappen: She goes into complete denial after declaring that she prefers to die with Miroku than leave him and save herself: "Did I say something? What did I say?"
* TraumaCongaLine: While all the members of Inuyasha's team have suffered through trauma at some point, what Sango experiences towers over them all. First her younger brother's mind is taken over by Naraku, then she watches her controlled brother kill her companions and father, then her controlled brother inflicts near-fatal injuries on her, and then she discovers Naraku's minions have wiped out her entire village while she was away.
%%* TroubledButCute
* {{Tsundere}}: The ''Dere'' variety. Even though she's usually more of a YamatoNadeshiko, Miroku is a genius bringing out the tsundere in her.
* WalkingArmory: In addition to the massive Hiraikotsu boomerang, Sango also carries a wakizashi sword, a blade hidden in her arm guard, and a vast assortment of poisons.
* WeakButSkilled: She's actually very strong but her strength doesn't compare to that of youkai. She makes up for it and her lack of powers with knowledge, techniques and training.
* WouldHurtAChild: Near the end of the series [[spoiler: she has to choose between saving Rin or Miroku; she chooses Miroku and is about to kill Rin to do it.]] Thankfully, Kagome intervenes and saves Rin.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She's quite the spin on the trope: she's graceful, demure, dark-haired, gentle and follows the family tradition... which happens to be ''demon slaying''. It's slightly based on how real-life {{Yamato Nadeshiko}}s were trained in weapon use so they could defend their households when in a pinch. Her preferred weapon is also an enormous boomerang, which one wouldn't normally associate with a yamato nadeshiko (though she does use a katana and various hidden blades in close combat).
* YouAreWorthHell: She would rather die with Miroku than live without him. In ''Final Act'', she literally begs him to let her die with him when it looks like his wind tunnel is going to finally kill him; insisting she wants a life with him or nothing at all.

[[quoteright:270:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirara_transformed.png]]
Kirara is a [[BakenekoAndNekoMata nekomata]]--a two-tailed youkai cat--who is also Sango's companion. She can change from a tiny feline to a huge fanged one for Sango to ride on, and has the ability to fly in her larger form.

----
* ActionPet: She's Sango's pet nekomata and helps her slay demons. She later joins up with Kohaku and Sango's son Hisui in demon slaying too.
* AdorableFluffyTail: There are a few times across the series where the fluffiness of those tails are enjoyed as being adorable and comfortable to rest on.
* BadassAdorable: A cute nekomata who can transform into a huge sabre-toothed cat.
* BakenekoAndNekomata: She's a nekomata, a cat youkai with two tails. Though she doesn't have most of the abilities nekomata are typically associated with, she is able to [[{{Sizeshifter}} grow in size]] at will.
* CuteKitten: Her small form is precisely this and absolutely huggable. Her large form is more adult and scary.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Episode 97 is all about Kirara, though it mainly just involves the team reflecting on all the ways they have mistreated her.
* {{Flight}}: Can fly in her big form.
* FunSize: She's typically seen as a little kitten when not in her larger form.
* HorseOfADifferentColor: She normally carries Sango and Miroku on her back.
* HunterOfHerOwnKind: A cat demon who's been working alongside Sango's family in their [[DemonSlaying trade]] for generations.
* IncendiaryExponent: Her paws are wreathed in flames in her giant form.
* InconsistentSpelling: In the English dub, her name is pronounced as 'Kilala', but still spelled 'Kirara'.
* KillerRabbit: Downplayed. Her small form is adorable but she has to change to her bigger form for the killer part.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: She's been with Sango through the years and trauma.
* MegaNeko: When she uses her big form, she is a cat demon the size of a horse.
* MultipleTailedBeast: Being a nekomata, she has two tails.
* NonDubbedGrunts: Much like [[Anime/PokemonTheSeries Pikachu]], her animal noises are undubbed.
* NonHumanSidekick: Sango's cat-demon sidekick. In the sequel, she's now the sidekick to Sango's son Hisui.
* PantheraAwesome: She transforms into a big saber-toothed cat writhed in flames.
* ParrotPetPosition: When in her smaller form, she often hangs out on Sango's shoulder.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Being a nekomata, this is obligatory. In the anime it's implied she was Midoriko's companion.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Subverted. When she's first introduced to Inuyasha's group, she's a snarling beast with glowing red eyes. Then it's revealed she's a friend of Myouga's and was just trying to protect the dead villagers of the place she calls home. She's a friend and ally after that.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: In her small form. Awwwwwwww.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: She changes from a little kitty to an enormous cat.
* TeamPet: In her small form (and sometimes even big form), she's an adorable partner and comic-relief.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Sango. She has stuck by Sango's side through thick and thin and is fiercely loyal to her. Kirara seems to have been a loyal part of Sango's family for many generations, being seen with Sango's grandfather and later her son. Also, Kirara becomes loyal to the rest of Inuyasha's group as well.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KumikoWatanabe (JP), Creator/JillianMichaels (EN), Creator/LauraTorres (LA SP, original series), Luciana Falcón (LA SP, ''Yashahime''), Maura Cenciarelli (IT), Audrey Lebihan (FR)

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qb_l.png]]

Shippo is a young [[AsianFoxSpirit fox youkai]] who joins Kagome and Inuyasha following the death of his father. Since he is still a child, he is not very strong in battle, but can change his shape and has a repertoire of trickery that occasionally comes in handy. His youth and immaturity bring him into frequent conflict with Inuyasha; it is not clear exactly how old he really is, given that youkai age more slowly than humans.

----
* AdaptationalBadass: In most games he's playable in, he's almost always a LightningBruiser and a GameBreaker as well.
* AnimalMotifs: Fox, being a kitsune.
* AsianFoxSpirit: He's a kitsune, although he only has one tail and his transformations are flawed due to his young age.
* BattleTops: "Fox Magic! Spinning tops!" They are very big.
* BrattyHalfPint: He's a young kitsune and can be kind of whiny smartass.
* CaptainObvious: He tends to point out the obvious.
* ChickMagnet: He may not look it, but he gets ''plenty'' of [[GirlOfTheWeek Girls of the Week]].
* ChildProdigy: Despite his young age (at least by youkai standards), he has immense magical talent for his species. It's lampshaded when he's accidentally dragged into a kitsune examination session he didn't even know existed. Despite having no time to prepare for his exams and being the youngest examinee present, he wipes the floor with his fellow examinees, earning their absolute awe as he breaks records in the speed at which he climbs the Kitsune rankings. It's confirmed in-universe that one day he'll grow up to be a Dai{{youkai}}.
* CuteLittleFangs: Being a fox yokai, he has these. They are quite tiny, but still noticeable.
* CuteMonsterBoy: A young fox demon with the mannerisms and looks of a small boy.
* DeadpanSnarker: When poking fun at Inuyasha's romantic issues.
* DisappearedDad: We meet him right after his dad, a powerful fox youkai, was murdered and skinned by Hiten and Manten.
* FauxFire: His fire doesn't burn.
* IAmNotWeasel: He is ''not'' a {{Tanuki}}: [[RunningGag "I'm a Kitsune!"]]
* KidAnova: Has a lot of conquests for someone so young.
%%* KidSidekick
* LamarckWasRight: After being around them for a long time, he's shown to imitate Inuyasha on the occasions where they actually agree on something as well as quick to help any girl in trouble regardless of not knowing the whole situation like Miroku. And this is in spite of the fact that he's stated that the doesn't want to end up like either of them.
* LittleBitBeastly: He's mostly humanoid, aside from having a fox's tail and feet.
* TheLoad: His powers are of little use in battle or otherwise and his age means he has little skill.
* MasterOfIllusion: Most of his tricks fall under this branch of magic including MesACrowd.
* MilesGloriosus: He's quick to brag about being just as strong as the others (sometimes stronger), but when he's actually needed he's just as quick to step back in the opposite direction and is quicker to acknowledge his shortcomings if it gets him out of danger. One of his most common excuses being that he's "just a kid".
* MorphicResonance: Can't hide his tail most of the time.
* MouthyKid: That snarky attitude often gets him smacked over the head by Inuyasha.
* ParentalAbandonment: His father was killed by the Thunder Brothers, and his mother is implied to have also passed away, as she is only mentioned once when Shippo recalls that he and his parents used to bathe together and how he enjoyed it.
* ParrotPetPosition: Being even tinier than a typical human child, he's small enough that he often rides on either Inuyasha's or Kagome's shoulder.
* PlayingWithFire: Shippo's Fox Fire spell is [[TechnicolorFire a blue fire]] that can't burn things because of his inexperience, but it will [[DeflectorShields protect those enshrouded]] from heat sources like real fire and lightning.
%%* PluckyComicRelief
* PointyEars: He has distinctively pointy ears that mark him as a youkai.
* SupportPartyMember: Due to his relative lack of offensive skills, he tends to support his human allies by transforming into various flying animals or objects, allowing them to fly and avoid attacks in combat.
* SweetTooth: Kagome often brings him lollipops during her returns to the modern era.
* TagalongKid: Kagome basically adopted him after the death of his last remaining family member so he follows her around.
* ThePrankster: Enjoys pranking Inuyasha.
* VagueAge: WordOfGod is that he's the biological equivalent of a seven-year-old human.[[invoked]]
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Being a [[AsianFoxSpirit kitsune]], he can shapeshift, although his human impersonations [[MorphicResonance retain his tail]].
* WhatTheHellHero: In episode 97, he gives one of these to Inuyasha, Miroku, and Kagome, accusing them of being the reason Kirara ran away. The rest of the group gives it right back to him when it turns out that Myoga merely borrowed Kirara to run errands and Shippo forgot to tell them; they're so pissed at him that, for once, Kagome gives Inuyasha free rein to pound Shippo rather than "sitting" him.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: Though Shippo is a skilled magician, his spells are all about creating simple and immature illusions, making them fairly useless in battle. Despite this, they have proven useful on more than one occasion. Even Inuyasha has noted this before.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: To Inuyasha. He insults him, pranks him, takes anyone else's side in an argument that's opposed to his, complains about everything he does wrong, [[ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike even while he's being rescued by him,]] and will get Kagome's "sit" command thrown at him. Most of the time this ends with him [[BullyingADragon getting pounded by Inuyasha.]]
