A 1st year high school student with a strict personal policy to never waste more energy than he needs to. As a result, Houtarou's motto is "If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll make it quick." Joining his school's Classic Literature Club at the request of his older sister, Tomoe, Houtarou finds his personal policy in constant danger of being broken due to the influence of the ever-curious, Eru Chitanda.
----
* AnimalMotifs: The lion. He has a bushy mane, and is [[BrilliantButLazy very "powerful", but prefers to laze about]]. Episode 8's discussion of TarotMotifs assigns him the Power arcana, whose iconography depicts a lion tamed by a young maiden.
* AntiHero: A PragmaticHero of the GoodIsNotSoft variation. He's a GuileHero, after all.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther:
** A platonic example with Ibara. Despite their constant barbs, Houtarou goes out of his way to look out for her repeated over the course of the series.
** [[spoiler:A partial example with Irisu in the final episode. They never had the friendliest relationship, but they manage to get a nice, civil conversation.]]
* AwesomeByAnalysis: What seems like irrelevant coincidences are all solid clues and pieces of information to Oreki.
* BadassAdorable: Despite his serious, apathetic demeanor, he's ''very'' dorky, being socially awkward and yet a pretty NiceGuy despite his apathetic demeanor.
* BadassBookworm: He's brilliant, clever and able to solve any mystery using his own deduction.
* BerserkButton: Do not pander to him or insult his intelligence, both of which stem from his true BerserkButton of being used.
* {{Bishonen}}: In the anime as per [[Creator/KyotoAnimation KyoAni]]'s signature style. Less so in the [[http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/hyouka/images/1/1b/420px-Hyouka_vol_02_-_002.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/336?cb=20120808033752 original novel illustrations]].
* {{Blackmail}}: Really likes doing this. Oreki isn't above blackmailing others if it will save him energy in the long run.
** Once he catches on to Tougaito's smoking, Oreki blackmails him into retrieving the Hyouka anthologies from the chemical safebox and delivering them to the Classics clubroom.
** Oreki deduces the identity of the Jumonji thief, Tanabe, and blackmails him into targeting the Classics Club for publicity, buying thirty copies of Hyouka, and using his position as Executive Committee president to sell Hyouka in the school's online store.
* BookDumb: His grades are very average, despite his high intelligence. Of course, he's not dumb, just lazy.
* BrainyBrunette: He's brunette and brilliantly intelligent and clever.
* BrilliantButLazy: Oreki has a natural talent in identifying clues and details that would pass unnoticed by other people, and is able to almost effortlessly put the pieces of the puzzle together. However, his top priority is to not waste too much energy.
* ByronicHero: Some traits are there: Oreki has a genius intellect, yet is very lazy and apathetic about society. He is also rather aloof and cynical.
* CatchPhrase:
** "If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll make it quick."
** "Bingo." When he makes a breakthrough during a case.
* CelibateHero: In the anime, at least. For a teenage boy who spends his time doing as little physical work as possible, Oreki is quite conscientious of where his mind wanders when he's around Chitanda, often getting flustered and ashamed when his mind does shifts in an impolite direction.
* CharacterDevelopment: As the series progresses, Houtarou proves that he is more than just an apathetic and lazy boy. His deduction and intellect are just the tip of the iceberg.
* TheChessmaster: See AwesomeByAnalysis.
* TheComicallySerious: Occasionally, his lines are downright hilarious.
* CovertPervert: Oreki is usually a low-maintenance type of guy who rarely thinks of romance... unless Chitanda is involved. And if she wears anything revealing or cute, he can't help but gawk at her.
* DeadpanSnarker: He gets a few jabs in, especially with Mayaka.
* {{Dismotivation}}: He's as lazy as they come, rarely putting effort into schoolwork, and spends most of his free time loafing around.
* DistractedByTheSexy: He is very strong-minded about his quest for laziness, and can fend off anyone that tries to barge in... except for Chitanda. He cannot stop her, he cannot dissuade her, he cannot say no to her, and he cannot rid himself of her. She's just ''that'' appealing to him, and she ticks on every box he has.
* TheDragAlong: Despite doing most of the heavy lifting during cases, Houtarou has to be literally dragged into helping by Chitanda.
* EatingTheEyeCandy: Invoked and played for laughs. During the Hinamatsuri parade at Chitanda's town, Oreki is ogling so intently at Chitanda that on a picture of him taken by Fukube during the parade, Chitanda thinks that he's yawning.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Characters/SherlockHolmes Sherlock Holmes]]. Oreki has very poor social skills and has a habit of only learning about aspects and people that pertain to his "investigations". He is very keen on picking up details that other people overlook and has a very inquisitive nature.
* FirstPersonSmartass: Most of it being narrative snark.
* FriendlessBackground: Subverted. He has Satoshi and Chitanda as close friends. However, he's a very distant and lonely person.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: Mostly the Apathetic, although he can be a lighter Cynic.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Either Melancholic or Phlegmatic. He may behave aloof and often pretends not to care, but he's actually kind and compassionate. He's also definitely lazy, but also very analytical and intelligent.
* GoodIsNotNice: As Mayaka reflects during her investigation of their Middle-school graduate project incident, she has come to know Oreki as a person who, even when demonstrating the contrary, never proceeds out of malice. She recognizes that Oreki is a person that proceeds with utmost care and dedication even when he protests about it. The trope is ultimately subverted, as despite his aloof and apathetic demeanor, he's a kind and compassionate guy deep down.
* GoodIsNotSoft: As an individual, Houtarou is introvert, aloof and apathetic, but he isn't a bad person. However, he's not above [[GuileHero blackmailing others if it will save him energy in the long run]].
* GreatDetective: To his dismay, everyone sees him as this.
* HatesBeingTouched: Never makes a scene of it, but subtly flinches every time someone gets close to him. Of course, with [[NoSenseOfPersonalSpace Satoshi and Chitanda]] around... His sister seems to be an exception, as he seems to have no issue when she plays with his hair and taps him on the head while he's watching TV in the OVA.
* TheHero: He is the one who undertakes to deduce the mysteries, after all.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: As Mayaka found out, [[spoiler:Oreki kept quiet at the fact that he sabotaged their middle-school graduates project in order to prevent a group of bully girls from perpetuating the bullying of one of his girl classmates, sullying his own name in the process when the bully who designed the projected mirror frame started crying hysterically when she realized that he had altered her pejorative design to denigrate ''her'' instead, thus making Oreki the villain that made her cry. As a matter of fact, this was one of the reasons Mayaka had a rather low opinion of Oreki when the Classics Club just started, thus finding out that she was wrong in judging him]].
* HeroicBSOD: Goes through a particularly nasty one in [[spoiler: Episode 11, when he realizes that his conclusion, while brilliant, was totally wrong to begin with and he was just [[UnwittingPawn being manipulated so the movie could end better]]]].
* HiddenDepths: Deep down residing in him, he's a very NiceGuy. He's just so damn lazy.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Episode 19 ends in this. He tries to prove to Chitanda that anyone can come up with a crazy theory, but the conclusions he draws from a seemingly innocuous school announcement turn out to be completely correct.
* HumbleHero: Thinks he's nothing special.
* HyperAwareness: From body language to the simple placement of objects, nothing escapes Oreki's notice.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Irisu admonishes him for saying that he arrives to his conclusions by mere luck, when it's obvious that his logical thinking is a remarkable asset, and that by downplaying it, he's belittling the people that are not as capable as he is even with all their effort. [[spoiler:However, with those words, Irisu is merely pandering to him for her own ends.]]
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: Oreki is intelligent and very distant.
* KarmaHoudini: Considering his tendency to {{blackmail}} for even the most trivial aspects, this is to be expected.
* ManipulativeBastard: See {{Blackmail}} for more details.
* TheMentor: To Eru, who tries to be as insightful and perceptive as he is.
* MessyHair: His hair is rather thick and messy.
* {{Narrator}}: He narrates most of the plot in episodes.
* NiceGuy: He's loyal and caring towards his friends. As Chitanda states, Oreki is actually a kind person who helps out others, herself included and rarely does things for himself. So yeah, despite his apathetic demeanor, he's a very compassionate person.
* NoSocialSkills: It's very difficult for him to have a social relationship to someone, which explains why Oreki is an introvert and has known only few friends.
* NotSoStoic: [[spoiler: When he realizes he was being used by Irisu, he briefly displays rage.]]
* ObliviousToLove: Played with. He seems somewhat unaware of Chitanda's attraction to him, and often rebukes her efforts to include him and make him part of her life with simple dismissal. To Chitanda, Oreki is simply one of the best people she's ever met, and regardless of any love development, he is a person that she considers essential in her life.
* OddCouple: [[OppositesAttract With Satoshi]].
* OhCrap: [[spoiler: When he realizes that he might not be able to return to his energy-saving life once he sees how gorgeous Chitanda looks as the Queen during the Hinamatsuri parade in Chitanda's town. To put it into context, she looks so strikingly beautiful that ''he considers the experience life-changing'', and even considers proposing to her later in the day]].
* PerpetualFrowner: For Oreki, it apparently takes more muscles to smile than to frown.
* PragmaticHero: Let's see, he fits the GoodIsNotSoft variety of the AntiHero, is a good guy overall, but not above {{blackmail}}ing and [[ManipulativeBastard manipulating]] others to solve cases (well, and [[BrilliantButLazy to spare energy]])...
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to ''everyone else's'' red.
* TheSmartGuy: And how. He's surprisingly wise and clever, unbelievably good at solving mysteries and seems to be able to always find a solution if he gives it enough thought.
* SmugSmiler: [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/hyouka/images/9/91/Oreki_smile.png/revision/latest?cb=20130515212336 Look at him!]]
* SherlockScan: Used in Episode 3 [[spoiler:to blackmail an upperclassman, Tougaito, who was smoking illegally in a classroom]]. Upon entering the scene, he immediately memorized the presence of several key items.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: Emphasis on "socially awkward."
* TheSpock: He's an intelligent, clever, stoic young man, ''very'' analitical and a rather cynical DeadpanSnarker.
* TheStoic: He's cool, calm and quiet. Showing emotion usually consumes too much energy for Houtarou, however...
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He may initially appear stoic and emotionless but in fact has a caring inner side.
* TakingAdvantageOfGenerosity: [[spoiler: The reason why he first adopted his energy conserving ideology. During his elementary school years, a girl in Houtarou's class took advantage of his willingness to do her classroom chores as well as his own. He eventually discovered this while, at the same time, realizing that his teacher was not only aware this happening and didn't say anything, but that the teacher himself was taking advantage of his willingness to help out by assigning him random chores around the classroom that weren't his responsibility at all. After this, he came to the conclusion that there were two kinds of people in the world; those who knew how the world worked and pushed everything they didn't want to do on others and those who happily accepted being on the receiving end of the former’s actions. What he told his sister later on pretty much sums everything up:]]
--> '''Houtarou''': [[spoiler: Even if you think that fellow human beings should help each other, others won't necessarily think of you as being worth it. It's not like I wanted anyone to appreciate me. I just never imagined that people thought of me as such an idiot. I won't stay after school anymore. As long as I'm around others, they'll ask me to do something. They probably think I'm an idiot because I always did what they asked without resisting. I don't care about what they think. I just hate being used. Of course, if I have to do it I will. I won't complain at all. But, if it's not necessary... If it turns out it's someone else's responsibility... If I don't have to do it, I won't. I absolutely won't.]]
* TallDarkAndHandsome: In the anime, he's a tall {{bishonen}}, and he's naturally introverted and rather aloof. In the novel, his appearance is rather plain.
* TarotMotifs: [[DoggedNiceGuy "The ]][[HiddenHeartOfGold Strength"]], according to Satoshi. Specifically, the comparison is that a proud lion (Oreki) was tamed by a pure maiden (Chitanda).
* ThinkingTic: He has a habit of playing with his forelock when he's thinking particularly hard about a case.
* TranquilFury: He never loses his stoicism, even when he's annoyed.
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards his friends.
* TheUnsmile: If he tries to force a smile, it's not ''scary'', but he's obviously trying to force a smile.
-->'''Houtarou''': "Damn, I can't smile."
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Mayaka; they are jokingly referred to as "Kaburaya Middle's best couple". Although they constantly aim snark at each other, it's obvious they get along quite well.
* WhenHeSmiles: [[spoiler:Episode 19. [[http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9f13h0MaV1r47zfto1_500.jpg It's nice.]]]]
* YouKeepTellingYourselfThat:
** Though he doesn't deny his attraction towards Chitanda, he constantly struggles with keeping himself in check when she's around. He's almost always willing to surrender his life goals and credo at the drop of a hat. If there's anyone in this world that he's willing to pour his whole self into, it's for Chitanda.
** Remembering Fukube's comments about the Lit club's respective Tarot cards, he checks a book of Tarot only to find that "Strength" is represented by a maiden holding a rabid lion down. Mad, he tells himself that there's no way that he himself is the lion being held by the maidens Chitanda, Irisu and his own sister Tomoe... which is exactly what's happening to him.

[[caption-width-right:350:''"I'm curious; I can't stop thinking about it!"'']]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SatomiSato (Japanese), Creator/MadeleineMorris (English)

The daughter of the wealthy Chitanda clan of farmers. An energetic and inquisitive young lady, Eru serves as the Classic Literature Club's president, as well as the source of much frustration in Oreki's life. Due to her insatiable curiosity, Eru can become quite persistent in her effort to understand things and once something has her attention, it's almost impossible for her to take her mind off it.
----
* AlcoholHic: The ''entire box'' of whiskey chocolates she eats in Episode 9 put her out of commission in Episode 10.
* AllLovingHeroine: Kind and sweet to everyone, even to a fault.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: {{Averted}}. She's beautiful with pale skin and black hair... but while she's kind and polite, she isn't by any means aloof, being [[GenkiGirl highly energetic]] and [[{{cloudcuckoolander}} spacey]].
* AnimalMotifs: Dogs. She has [[SuperSenses an abnormal sense of smell and hearing]], as well as a loyal, kind, sweet and playful personality.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: She's easily distracted. In episode 12, every event at the school festival distracts her from her goal.
* TheBeautifulElite: She comes from the wealthiest and most powerful family in town and she's a delicately beautiful girl.
* BeneathTheMask: While she appears courteous, refined and optimistic, [[spoiler:she actually has a rather pessimistic view of her constrained upbringing and her family's old-fashioned traditions.]]
* BlitheSpirit: Energetic, optimistic, kind of an airhead and Houtarou's ManicPixieDreamGirl.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Eru may be a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} and have an [[ConstantlyCurious odd]] [[AttentionDeficitOohShiny behaviour]], but she's actually very intelligent. Her memory is excellent, she knows many things, is an exceptional student and has a big imagination that very much helps solving mysteries.
* CatchPhrase: "Watashi, ki ni narimasu" (I'm curious). Translated to "I have to know" in the English dub.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: It's not certain exactly what's up with her, but she's quite an oddball, very energetic and naive, and is easily distracted. That said, she's still polite and graceful, and absolutely able to be levelheaded.
* ConstantlyCurious: To Oreki's dismay. Chitanda and her curiosity pretty much drive the plot. Without her, we would just be watching Oreki sit around all day. However, an aspect of this he has been able to exploit is the fact that she can be momentarily satiated with another distraction whenever he feels that her main line of questioning might be too expensive energy-wise.
* TheCutie: An adorable, sweet and beautiful girl with a kind and innocent personality.
* DitzyGenius: She's a top student (ranked 6th in her year after mid-terms) and has an excellent memory, but has trouble cutting through Oreki's snark and is easily distracted, as shown in Episode 12 of the Kanya Festival arc.
* FamilyBusiness: She is heir to the Chitanda family's farm empire, which has a huge influence over the city. As such, she is well-educated and refined in preparation for the position.
* {{Foil}}: To Oreki and Irisu. Chitanda is optimistic, outgoing, sweet and emotional, while they are rather cynical, aloof and always calm and collected.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Optimist. A WideEyedIdealist, almost always sees the best in everyone and everything, and of course she's a total sweetheart.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine. An outgoing ProperLady, kind, sweet and rather naive. Is a perfect combination of a YamatoNadeshiko and a GenkiGirl.
* {{Gaslighting}}: Invoked and subverted. [[spoiler:The club newcomer Ohinata thinks that Chitanda is harassing her with the knowledge that her friend was involved in an employment scheme that robbed many potential hires of a large sum of money. Misinterpreting a conversation with Chitanda makes Ohinata surreptitiously quit the club. As it turned out, Chitanda is only familiar with the "friend" tangentially, and thought that Ohinata quit due to her grabbing her cell phone by mistake and that Ohinata took it as an invasion to her privacy]].
* GirlOfMyDreams: She is the unintended subject of Hotaro's daydreaming. This is more pronounced in the anime, where Hotaro thinks of richly fantastic hypothetical situations where she ensnares him into doing her bidding, much to his dismay.
* GenkiGirl: Her massive energy output tires Oreki out just from being around her.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:During the school marathon, she is completely aghast at the possibility that Kohinata might have quit the club due to Chitanda having grabbed her ringing phone when she wasn't around. It's so bad that Oreki has to pull Kohinata out of the marathon to tell her that Chitanda is two steps away from pulling out her hair from guilt, and make Kohinata spill out why she actually quit]].
* HiddenDepths: She is more anxious and has more social awareness than she actually shows in her everyday life. She is especially preoccupied with her future as the heiress to her family's legacy. She's also a more important person in the social strata than what Oreki initially thought.
* HimeCut: To evidence her status as a YamatoNadeshiko.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: An innocent AllLovingHeroine who doesn't have a mean bone in her body, always kind and idealistic. When talking about SevenDeadlySins, Satoshi and Mayaka even compare her to a saint.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Her huge blue/purple eyes glow whenever she's curious, and perfectly fit her kind, innocent, naive and airheaded nature.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Downplayed, in the HotSpringsEpisode she comments with a bit of surprise that the hot spring wasn't mixed, and as she had walked down with Oreki was perfectly fine with going with him. She does get embarassed later when Oreki notices her white bikini.
* JustFriends: Even with the UnresolvedSexualTension between them, she has a great deal of respect for Oreki and is not shy of singing praises at his brilliance. She considers him one of the very best people she's ever met, making increasing efforts to include him in her life as a person who is necessary to her, and short of any romantic development, one of her best friends.
* LargeHam: And how! Almost everything makes her feel excited and curious.
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Towards Oreki. One could say Oreki wasn't really alive until Chitanda showed up.
* TheMcCoy: Very emotional, sweet, naive and idealistic.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Frequently gets all up in Oreki's personal space when she asks him to help her out with something.
* NiceGirl: A sweet and cuddly bundle of infectious [[BlitheSpirit enthusiasm]] and [[WideEyedIdealist idealism]]. In fact, she is so nice she struggles to act the part of a demanding leader for her club, even with Irisu's advice.
* TheNoseKnows: Her sense of smell and hearing is abnormally sharp. Oreki even compares her to a dog.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Tends to get really close to people without realizing it once she gets excited.
* {{Ojou}}: Being the daughter of an immensely rich and powerful farming clan, though she never expects special treatment, and tends to downplay her family's wealth. She is, in terms of her family's position, one of the most important students at school, with a name that carries an immense gravitas.
* ProperLady: She's an outgoing GenkiGirl, but also a very ladylike and polite YamatoNadeshiko (with her delicate beauty and HimeCut to evidence it). And she's a good cook, to boot!
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Chitanda is noticeably paler than most of the other characters and is immediately noted by Oreki and Satoshi to be attractive.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: With Oreki.
* SiblingsWanted: Downplayed, but she mentions that she had always wanted a sibling and has quite the idealized image of sibling relationships in her head.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Invoked. During the Hinamatsuri parade at her town, she is dressed so exquisitely as the "Empress" that Oreki even considers quitting his energy-saving lifestyle at the mere sight of her. She looked ''that'' gorgeous.
* SoProudOfYou: She has nothing but admiration for Oreki, and she spares no efforts in letting him know how much she appreciates him and the help he is always willing to lend her, regardless of his half-hearted protests.
* StupidSexyFriend: Oreki frequently has to stop himself from being captivated by Chitanda.
* SupremeChef: When she invites her friends at home and cooks onigiri for them, they tell her they're exceptional.
* TarotMotifs: "TheFool", as she is always the one who haphazardly instigates interest in a case or mystery.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Her eyes light up when her curiosity has peeked. Oreki can't help but be drawn to her gaze. In the novels, he states that he blames her big eyes as the reason his energy-saving lifestyle is being currently foiled.
* WideEyedIdealist: Due to her sheltered upbringing, she can be rather naive about certain things, such as when she was shocked to learn that Mayaka's younger cousins sometimes do not get along despite being siblings.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Definitely has all the traits: beautiful with dark hair and gentle blue eyes, incredibly kind, friendly, helpful and polite... And a good cook.
* YouKeepTellingYourselfThat: Invoked by Satoshi. He tells Oreki that his motto turned from a mantra into an excuse, and that his efforts turned from "energy economy" to ''satisfying Chitanda's curiosity''.

[[folder:Satoshi Fukube]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hyouka_15_satoshi.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:''"A database can't draw conclusions."'']]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/DaisukeSakaguchi (Japanese), Creator/DallasReid (English)

Houtarou's best friend and a fellow member of the Classic Literature Club. Unlike Houtarou, Fukube always tries his best to lead a colorful life, and as such, is also a member of the student council as well as the Handicrafts Club. He dubs himself a "database" for his fantastic memory, often reading things just for the sake of gaining knowledge no matter how trivial. However, "a database can't draw conclusions"--despite this huge knowledge base, Fukube lacks Oreki's analytical talent.
----
* AnchoredShip: With Mayaka.
* BeneathTheMask: [[spoiler: Actually a SadClown carefully hiding his obsession issues.]]
* {{Bishonen}}: Further emphasized by his flamboyant personality.
* BreakTheCutie: Satoshi's normally jovial expression is broken momentarily when Oreki tells him he's found a lead in the Juumoji case by means other than discovering a mistake or connection of occurrences, methods Satoshi has tirelessly been using in an effort to solve the case himself.
* BromanticFoil: The goofy, teasing friend to balance straight-faced Oreki.
* CatchPhrase: "A database can't draw conclusions."
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: A mild example. He's more of a {{Keet}} but he also has some strange hobbies, not to mention his costume choices...
* TheCutie: Easily the sweetest and most adorable character in the series alongside Eru.
* DeadpanSnarker: More snarker than deadpan, but he has a good sense of humor and is pretty teasing and sarcastic.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Characters/SherlockHolmes Dr. John H. Watson]], the constant companion of Sherlock Holmes. Like Watson, Fukube has a great deal of information available that Holmes/Oreki can use as a resource. He is also critical of Oreki's antisocial tendencies, and like Watson, they have had a more aggressive past that they've left behind (Fukube used to be a more volatile person, Watson used to be a soldier). Fukube is also a great admirer of Oreki's logical capabilities, while harboring a hint of envy and curiosity for those.
* {{Fanboy}}: Of ''Literature/SherlockHolmes''.
* {{Foil}}: To Oreki. While Oreki is stoic, calm and quiet, Satoshi is sweet, flamboyant and cheerful.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Realist (or Conflicted deep down), as he's not as optimistic as Chitanda despite his constant cheerful act.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Eclectic. He's a bit quieter than Chitanda, and is mostly a combination of Sanguine and Phlegmatic (playful, sweet, kind, witty and sarcastic) but also has some Melancholic traits, as he's more troubled and pessimistic than he looks. [[spoiler:He also did a pretty cynical deed when he refused Mayaka's cake pretending it was stolen.]]
* GenreSavvy: He realizes that his lack of talent or motivation prevents him from having "main character" capability, [[spoiler:which results in him being a StepfordSmiler.]]
* GuileHero: Rounds Oreki out by handling social affairs such as promoting the club's anthology. Satoshi is also very good at keeping the club together, being the one who mediates Oreki and Mayaka, and also encourages Chitanda's curiosity, which in turn forces Oreki to be more involved.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Despite appearing carefree and whimsical, he is generally unassuming and thinks little of his actual abilities, reflected in his motto that, despite being a database, he can't draw any conclusions.
* HiddenDepths: The main reason he keeps Mayaka at bay is because [[spoiler: he used to be an angrier person before, and is afraid on falling on the same patterns at the moment he accepts Mayaka, mainly over the possibility of ending up hurting her]].
* InTouchWithHisFeminineSide: And how. He's pretty cheerful, sweet, flamboyant, loves getting close to Oreki, occasionally wears a pink t-shirt, and his cell phone (as shown in episode 16) is pink.
* {{Keet}}: He's very energetic and lives each day to the fullest.
* TheKirk: Although he's emotional, cheerful and friendly, he's more of a realist compared to Chitanda.
* NiceGuy: Satoshi is kind, friendly, cheerful, thoughtful, and a bit teasing as well, with a good sense of humor. For the last description, Satoshi is very careful with his application of jokes for he believes that they must be improvised, or else they are just common lies, moreover he fully understands how they can cause misunderstandings.
* OddCouple: With Oreki. The two couldn't be any more different, yet maintain a strong friendship.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Feels this way towards Oreki, believing his HardWorkHardlyWorks.
* PhotographicMemory: A self proclaimed "Database".
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Oreki's blue.
* TheRival: Satoshi holds a bitter, one-sided rivalry with Houtarou when it comes to detective skills.
* SoreLoser: [[spoiler: Satoshi tries his best to keep it in check, but he used to be very obsessed with winning in middle school.]]
* StepfordSmiler: [[spoiler:A minor case in that Satoshi has quite a few insecurities, but he forces a smile everyday regardless.]]
* SunnySunflowerDisposition: He's friendly and warm, and actually dresses as a sunflower at one point.
* TarotMotifs: [[GuileHero "The Magician"]], likely referring to the tarot's association with wisdom and guidance.

A member of the Classic Literature Club. Ibara is easily put off by Houtarou's snarky attitude, but shows her nice side to Satoshi. She volunteers as an assistant at her school's library and is also an avid reader of manga.
----
* AllTheOtherReindeer: Downplayed, some members of the manga research clearly don't like her too much.
* DeadpanSnarker: Oh yes. Especially towards Oreki.
* DevotedToYou: Towards Satoshi. She has [[SingleTargetSexuality liked Satoshi and only Satoshi since middle school]].
* {{Fangirl}}: Her favorite manga is "A Corpse by Evening".
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: Mostly the Realist, although she can be a lighter Cynic, and she's definitely a DeadpanSnarker.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: She's somewhat Choleric, although when she's not annoyed she's quite the Phlegmatic.
* HotBlooded: Gets very passionate about subjects she loves, especially manga.
* IWillWaitForYou: [[spoiler:After the Valentine's ordeal, she reveals to Chitanda that she's aware that she's pressuring Satoshi with her wishes with full knowledge that he's not in the emotional state to reciprocate her feelings like she deserves; however, they do become an item when they become second years.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Downplayed. She can be impulsive, stubborn and rudely frank, but otherwise Ibara is very capable of being nice. She generally is, unless annoyed, very pleasant and kind to the people around her.
* LittleMissSnarker: She's the smallest of her friends and she has plenty of snark to go around, though almost all of it is directed at Oreki.
* {{Miko}}: She works as a shrine maiden in her free time.
* RoughOveralls: Maya prefers overalls when she's not wearing her school uniform, marking her as the {{Tomboy}} in the TomboyAndGirlyGirl pairing of her and Eru Chitanda.
* SeriousBusiness: Takes manga very seriously.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Mayaka has liked and only liked Satoshi since their days in middle school.
* TheSpock:
** Although in a different sense than Oreki, but still, she's the most objective member of the group. And yes, just like him, she's a DeadpanSnarker.
** Subverted when [[HotBlooded she gets passionate about subjects she loves.]]
* TarotMotifs: [[TheSpock "Justice"]], likely due to the tarot's connection with objectivity and desire for truth reflecting Mayaka's own personality and position as TheWatson to Oreki's Sherlock.
* TheTeamNormal: She lacks any outstanding investigative skills. However, because of this, Mayaka provides a more relatable standpoint during a case, and sometimes makes simple observations others like Oreki or Satoshi might overlook. She's also the most disciplined member of the club.
* {{Tsundere}}: To a certain extent towards Oreki. She's at odds with the fact that a person as brilliant as Oreki is at the same time so morose and lazy; as such, this is the reason why she's not fond of praising Oreki.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Oreki, though neither would ever admit it. As a matter of fact, Oreki considers her a very dear friend.
* TheWatson: Minus the narrator function.

A friend of Chitanda's and the daughter of a family that runs a general hospital. She is infamous amongst the school for her cold appearance and manipulative, business-minded demeanor.
----
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Irisu, in stark contrast to Chitanda, shows little emotion more than she needs to.
* AmbiguousSyntax: Invoked. She tells Oreki that [[spoiler:her praises for him were not sincere, but retorts that he can arrive to whatever conclusion he sees fit regarding the whole situation. It's later revealed that, while she did manipulate him, Irisu didn't mean to hurt him like it ended up happening]].
* BigBad: The closest character this show has to one as main antagonist. [[spoiler:She manipulated Oreki during the mystery of the unfinished film, after all.]]
* DistaffCounterpart: To Oreki. When you think about it, [[SugarAndIcePersonality both have a lot in common]].
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Characters/SherlockHolmes Irene Adler]] of ''[[Franchise/SherlockHolmes Sherlock Holmes]]'' fame. They are the only women to have fooled Holmes/Oreki and escaped unhindered. Like later characterizations of Adler, Irisu is also a seductress and a conman.
* HiddenHeartOfGold:
** [[spoiler:When she has a goal in mind, Irisu is [[LackOfEmpathy cold, emotionless]] and [[ManipulativeBitch manipulative]]. However, in the last episode, it is revealed that this is no more than a facade, since behind her coldness is a very friendly girl.]]
** [[spoiler:It's shown during her chat with Tomoe that Irisu is remorseful of what she did to Oreki, but even so, Tomoe tells Irisu that she should have told Hongo herself that she didn't think that the script was good enough, instead of roping Oreki into doing her bidding in the most roundabout way she could muster, just so that she could save face.]]
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Played with. [[spoiler:Albeit she tells Oreki that she did not mean it when she called him a "special" person, it's implied that by that time, Irisu was basically unable to backtrack on her manipulations of Oreki, and opted to take the brunt load of his scorn instead of insulting his intelligence by sugarcoating her actions. She later tells Tomoe that this is not what she wanted to happen, but Tomoe dismisses her as a coward, both to Hotarou, and to Hongo in the first place; Irisu let the situation balloon until Hotarou realized what was happening, albeit much too late]].
* LackOfEmpathy: In Irisu's mind, when there's a job to do, there are no people, only tools.
* ManipulativeBitch: [[spoiler:She manipulates Oreki.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: One she brought on herself. [[spoiler:By manipulating Oreki, she marred any words of praise she had for him, whether they were true or not, thus earning the scorn of Oreki, the affected party, and Tomoe, a person she admires and counted on for help. It's implied by later characterization that Irisu never intended to belittle Oreki like she ended up doing, and that she does harbor admiration for him.]]
* NiceGirl: [[spoiler:When she doesn't have a goal in mind, Irisu is incredibly nice and friendly.]]
* OddFriendship: With Chitanda, particularly because both have an extremely different personality.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She is seen as attractive both in-universe and out. Even Satoshi describes her as being very beautiful.
* RedBaron: [[TheChessmaster "The Empress"]].
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:She gets one from Tomoe, who being mad at the fact that she hurt Oreki, tells her that she didn't have the cojones to tell Hongo that her script wasn't gonna cut it, and she had Oreki fill in the gaps that both Hongo and her classmates left on the movie. Irisu tries to defend herself by telling Tomoe that she was in no position to let the project fail, to which Tomoe simply signs off from the chat.]]
* TheSpock: Only the results matter to Irisu. How ethical the means are is hardly worth considering.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: [[spoiler:In the final episode, Houtarou gets suspicious when she asks his opinion on why the procession took a different path than it was supposed to, but Irisu replies that she was honestly curious. She may be a [[ManipulativeBitch manipulative]], apathetic girl most of the time, but Irisu can actually be friendly when she doesn't have a goal in mind.]]
* SurroundedByIdiots: Invoked. [[spoiler:She had to rope in Oreki once she realized that no one had any decent ideas for the movie, in spite of their enthusiasm and investment on the production.]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: To Oreki. [[spoiler: Subverted, [[MotivationalLie she only said that for the sake of using him...]] [[WasItAllALie maybe...]]]]

Houtarou's older sister who studies abroad in India. Due to being a former member, it is due to her insistence that Houtarou joins the Classic Literature Club to prevent it from being disbanded. She seems to be quite the intuitive person, hinted at having even greater deduction skills than her brother.
----
* AwesomeByAnalysis: She's implied to have even better intuition and analytical abilities than her little brother.
* ChekhovsGift: A pen that doesn't even work ends up getting Oreki a bag of flour that helps the Classical Club win a cooking competition.
* TheChessmaster: Most of the trials Hotaro goes through in the Literature Club happen because of her, or have her hand guiding the wheel.
* CoolBigSis: To Hotaro, and proverbially, to her underclassmen at school. It's shown that while she can be overbearing to her brother, she is very doting and kind towards him, and dislikes when people hurt him.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Invoked. In her chat with Irisu, she implies that [[spoiler:while she herself set up the situation for Hotaro to be tricked by Irisu, and that Hotaro was a dummy for not catching on until it was too late, Tomoe is not OK with Irisu having ended up hurting Hotaro with the whole mess, especially when [[CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot Irisu could have just been sincere with Hongo from the beginning by telling her that her script sucked]].]]
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Characters/SherlockHolmes Mycroft Holmes]], the more capable, sharper and more intelligent older sibling of the main character. 358
Tomoko "Hina" Ōhinata is a first-year student of Kamiyama High School and the newest member of the Classics Club during their second year. Formerly an underclassman of Oreki, Ibara and Fukube at Kaburaya Middle School, her surreptitious quitting from the club after less than two months is the subject of the fifth volume of the novels.
----
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Due to the fact that Chitanda knows a great deal of people as the heiress of a big agricultural company, Ohinata thinks that she's aware of the fraud that her friend Sachi committed, and that Chitanda spends a considerable effort in taunting her with this. Little does she know, Chitanda is entirely unaware of who Sachi is other than knowing her name, and she certainly isn't the kind of person who would do such a thing to another person.
* EntertaininglyWrong: She assumes that Chitanda knows about the scandal surrounding Sachi Agawa, thinking that Chitanda is taunting her with that supposed knowledge. [[DramaticIrony This makes her terrified of Chitanda, who, of all people, is the least terrifying person that she might ever meet]].
* GenkiGirl: She is a very enthusiastic girl.
* HugeSchoolgirl: It's mentioned in the novel that she is quite tall, especially for a girl that has just graduated from middle-school.
* MyGreatestFailure: She has a few:
** She is terrified at the prospect of the club members finding out that her best friend Sachi Agawa made her family commit fraud in order to rob potential job candidates of an inordinate amount of money, stemming from the fact that the girl still thinks that Ohinata is still her friend.
** The reason she refuses to rejoin the club stems from the fact that she erroneously thought that Chitanda was {{Gaslighting}} her regarding her possible knowledge of Sachi. She is so ashamed of her behavior that she won't return to the club, as she cannot face Chitanda.
* PetTheDog: Oreki states that even with all that happened, he's grateful to her for the fact that she made the club celebrate his birthday. He even assures her that if she clears the misunderstanding that made her quit, she'd be more than welcome to rejoin. She declines, however.
* TheReasonYouSuck: Oreki admonishes her for unwittingly causing a situation that left Chitanda on the verge of tears.
* SixthRanger: She is the fifth member of the Classics Club.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: She enjoyed her friendship with Sachi, whose family is wealthy. When Ohinata ran out of money, however, Sachi had very little inconvenience in using her family connections in order to defraud a great deal of people out of their money in order to keep Ohinata around. As such, Ohinata is very cautious at the fact that she might be associated to anything that Sachi did.
