Kabukicho is an infamous red light district in Edo where the main characters also reside.

!!Four Heavenly Emperors
The Heavenly Emperors are the four leaders of Kabukicho's biggest factions. Months after Jirocho's retirement and Kada's "disappearance" they are replaced by Gintoki for Otose, Azumi for Saigo, Tae for Kada, and Katsuo for Jirocho.

!!!Voiced by: Creator/{{Kujira}} (JP), Creator/ShelleyCaleneBlack (EN, movie), Samantha Ferris (EN, series), Creator/PepaAgudo (Spain)
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otose_5138.png]]

Gintoki's tough-as-nails landlady. "Otose" is just her alias, and her real name is Ayano Terada.

She owns a snack-bar and is usually helpful towards those in need. Up until the Four Devas Arc, she mostly remained in the backgorund, often giving precious advice or taking in Tama, Catherine or Seita temporarily.

Despite constant arguments over Gintoki's inability to pay his rent, she is confident in his defense of her. She is apparently one of the four "emperors" that rule the Kabukicho and has the personal title "Empress of the Kabuki District," mainly because of her good relationships and channels... and [[OneManArmy Gintoki]].
----
* BadassPacifist: Not a fighter, but damn tough-as-nails anyway.
* BenevolentBoss: She treats her employees Catherine and Tama as if they were her daughters. Even though Tama is a robot who is always eager to work without a break, Otose tries to persuade her to take a day off every once in a while.
* CoolOldLady: An old lady who owns a simple snack shop, yet she commands a huge amount of respect in Kabukicho.
* DisneyDeath: Jirocho stabs her in front of her husband's grave, presumably killing her, only for her to survive and it to be revealed as part of Jirocho's plan to keep her out of the eventual confrontation with Kada.
* {{Forgiveness}}: Otose is one of the most forgiving people in the series. Catherine tried stealing from her in her introductory story. When Catherine couldn't find a job after her release from prison due to her criminal record, Otose takes her in after finding her reduced to mendicity on the street and she now works full time at Otose's bar.
* HerHeartWillGoOn: She lost her husband during the Joi War, but keeps on going.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Based on the historical Otose, but this one is the wife of Isuke not Tatsugoro, a farmer from Terada Village. Isuke founded the Terada Inn, which was a gathering place for ronin pro-imperial loyalists.
* IWasQuiteALooker: [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jirochu_otose_5698.jpg Yes she was]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her often blunt attitude, she sincerely cares for the Yorozuya and her employees, Catherine and Tama (even though Catherine's very introduction into the series was trying to steal from Otose), going as far as to call them her family. This kindness was more obvious when she was a young woman, as she secretly fed poor children food from her job (and got fired for it).
* NeverMessWithGranny: Her title "Empress of the Kabuki District" should tell you that this is one old lady you do not want to mess with. While she has zero ability to defend herself, she has a small army made of the best fighters in Kabukicho under her command. The kicker? Every single one of them holds an UndyingLoyalty toward her and are thus ready to fight to death if it means protecting or avenging her.
* NonActionSnarker: Despite counting on the Yorozuya for her own protection, since she is just too old to really make an impression in a heated physical fight, she does gibe at them a lot.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Her real name is Ayano Terada but everybody, even the ones close to her, calls her Otose, despite the fact that she never made her real name a secret.
* ParentalSubstitute: Functions as one for Gintoki, Catherine, Tama and, briefly, Seita.
* PetTheDog: Among other examples, she is shown many times ripping into Gintoki for not paying her each month's rent on time, yet she cuts him some slack a few times all the same.
* PluckyGirl: In her youth.
* {{Protectorate}}: Otose first met Gintoki while offering meat pies at her husband's grave. She let grubby-looking Gintoki eat them and for this favor, Gintoki promised to protect her until she joins her husband. Even earlier, Tatsugoro (Otose's husband) with his last words entrusts her safety to Jirocho.
* PunctuatedForEmphasis: '''This! Is! KABUKICHO!!!'''
* SmokingIsCool: Smokes cigarettes.
* UndyingLoyalty: Be it Gintoki himself, Catherine, Tama or pretty much anyone who knows her well, she inspires this due to her kind and caring self underneath her apparent toughness.

[[folder:Tokumori Saigo]]
!!Tokumori Saigo
!!!Voiced by: Creator/HisaoEgawa (JP), Regino Ramos (Spain)
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saigo_4687.png]]

A former member of the Anti-Foreigner Faction. Since his wife's death he has done everything he could to be both a father and a mother to his son. He is also the owner of an okama cabaret bar, and most of the crossdressers are formerly of the Faction as well. In his first appearance he tried to transform Gintoki and Katsura into crossdressers as well until they helped him out.
----
* ActionDad: He usually focuses on raising his son and running his okama bar, but when he has the chance to shine in a fight, he shows why he was a legendary warrior in the Joi War.
* AgentPeacock: He runs an okama bar after retiring as a soldier, but don't underestimate him because he's still the same force to be reckoned with as back in the Joi War.
* BareFistedMonk: Saigo usually doesn't wear a weapon, instead he tears people up with his bare hands.
* BattleStrip: He always discards his kimono before he goes into battle.
* BenevolentBoss: He treats the okama of the Kamakko club as his dear friends. He won't forgive anyone who makes fun of his employees for their peculiar line of business.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He may as well be the physically strongest human in Gintama, pulling off feats that are impossible for ''Gintoki''.
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: If you look closely at his name, you begin to see that his historical inspiration is TheDreaded general and leader of the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satsuma_Rebellion Satsuma Rebellion]], [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saigo_Takamori Saigo Takamori]]. Now how this hypermasculine Japanese icon was transformed to a transvestite (while still character-consistent to the real-life Saigo) by Sorachi is either [[MindScrew mind-boggling]], a [[{{Satire}} specific statement]], or pure RuleOfFunny.
* ForcedIntoEvil: Kada takes his son Teruhiko hostage to force Saigo to attack the Yorozuya even though he and his faction don't really want to. Once the Yorozuya rescue Teruhiko, he joins them in taking down Kada's forces.
* {{Fundoshi}}: He often strips all his garments save for his fundoshi when he goes to battle, which is where he gets his nickname from.
* GoodParents: He's raising his son alone after his wife's death and does a good job at playing the role of two parents in one.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Based on Saigo Takamori of the late Edo period, a samurai who made a huge impact on Japanese history.
* MachoCamp: He puts on make-up, wears a woman's kimono, and is one of the largest humans in the series in terms of bulk.
* OldSoldier: A renowned veteran of the Joi War.
* OneManArmy: He took down Amanto battleships on his own during the Joi War while wearing nothing but his signature loincloth.
* PapaWolf: '''Don't''' put a finger on Teruhiko if you want to live.
* PermaStubble: In case he wasn't obvious enough already.
* RedBaron: ''White Loincloth Saigo'' as a member of the Anti-Foreigner Faction and ''Fearsome God Mademoiselle Saigou'' as an okama.
* ShirtlessScene: Many times.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Saigo became an okama to "be both a father and a mother" to his son after his wife died. His son is bullied for this, but Teruhiko loves Saigo for being both a great parent and person.

!!Kada
!!!Voiced by: Creator/MikiIto
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kada_1852.png]]

Also known as "Kujakuhime" ("Princess Peacock"), she is an Amanto who operates most of the gambling outfits in Kabukicho.

Manipulative, vain and highly territorial, she runs her casino with an iron fist and isn't very close to the other "Emperors" of Kabukicho. During the Four Devas Arc, it is revealed that she is actually linked to the Harusame Space Pirates and that her intentions are far from benevolent.
----
* AbsurdlyHighStakesGame: If you dare to cheat in her casino, only luck, literally, will save you from death.
* ArchEnemy: Her and Jirocho regard each other as their worst enemy.
* ArcVillain: Of the Four Devas Arc.
* TheBaroness: A sexpot type. She's very good-looking but rather domineering despite her delicate appearance.
* FateWorseThanDeath: The Harusame condemn her to isolation after they catch her. Her mind snaps as a result.
* FemmeFatale: Subverted. Despite speaking in a very suggestive tone and her sultry attitude, she makes it clear from the get-go that she means business and that she has no intention of seducing anyone.
* FemmeFatalons: Long nails to match her character.
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: She completely snaps after the [[SpacePirates Harusame]] enclose her for stealing and using their money.
* HiddenWeapons: Her fan's spokes end with razor-sharp blades that she can activate at will, but she never gets to use it.
* HighClassFan: She has a fan made out of peacock feathers, to illustrate both her high status and her PeacockGirl motif.
* ManipulativeBitch: She manipulates everyone in Kabukicho to her benefit.
* NoblewomansLaugh: She even has a fan!
* NonActionBigBad: Doesn't fight herself, relying entirely on her army of EliteMooks. The one time she tries to fight, she gets knocked out.
* {{Ojou}}: She's treated like and spoken of as a princess.
* PeacockGirl: She wears a peacock-themed outfit and is known as the Peacock Princess.
* PointyEars: She's an Amanto, but the only real indication are those pointy ears of hers.
* ProfessionalGambler: She runs huge gambling rings and doesn't appreciate people messing with them.
* SmugSnake: She's smug and confident in her plan to seize Kabukicho for her own. Fittingly, when her plan falls apart, so does her confidence.
* TokenNonHuman: She's the only Heavenly Emperor in Kabukicho who is an Amanto and not a human Earthling.
* VillainousBreakdown: Reacts less than calmly when not only do Gintoki and Jirocho manage to kill all of her EliteMooks, the rest of Kabukicho rallied together and managed to defeat the minions she sent to Otose's snack shop.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: Villainous lady wearing courtly white robes.
* WeWillMeetAgain: Says this to Gintoki and Jirocho at the end of the Four Devas arc. They do meet again in the same episode, while all the other emperors are recovering from the huge Kabukicho fight, and this time she loses for good.
[[/folder]]

!!Jirocho Doromizu
!!!Voiced by: Creator/TakayukiSugo
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jirocho_5679.png]]

The last Emperor of Kabukicho to be revealed in the series. A former member of the Anti-Foreigner Faction, currently a yakuza. Grew up with Otose and ended up befriending her future husband. Due to the fact that he also loved her, he backed down, allowing Otose to marry his best friend. When Otose's husband died protecting Jirocho from a bullet, Jirocho took it upon himself to protect Kabukicho -- no matter the means.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He is very dark skinned despite being Japanese, and Gintoki even calls him [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganguro ganguro]] because of it.
* AntiHero: A vigilante in his youth, and one of the reasons why Kabukicho hasn't been taken over by Harusame over the years as an adult.
* ArchEnemy: Him and Kada regard each other as their worst enemy.
* BadassLongRobe: Kicks ass in a white and brown robe.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:After leaving at the end of the Four Devas arc, he returns to Kabukicho with Pirako in the final arc of the series.]]
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: During his fight with Gintoki, Jirocho ''punches'' Gintoki so hard that he flies through a row of tombstones, crashing hard into a stone wall.
* ChekhovsGunman: He's barely even on-screen in his first appearance, but takes on a major role in the Four Devas arc.
* CoveredWithScars: Fittingly for a war hero, he has several scars to show for it.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Jirocho became friends with Tatsugoro after losing his first fight against him.
* DisappearedDad: He is Pirako's father, having left her and her mother to protect Kabukicho from the shadows.
* DotingParent: After [[spoiler:returning to Kabukicho with Pirako]], he constantly showers his daughter with affection, compensating for not being there during her childhood.
* EnemyMine: He and Gintoki unite to take on Kada's EliteMooks together before they settle the score between each other with a SingleStrokeBattle.
* EvilCounterpart: He's essentially a much older, less lazy, and seemingly evil version of Gintoki. This gets subverted when it turns out he was GoodAllAlong.
* EvilOldFolks: Appears to be an evil and old crime boss at first, but his intentions are proven to be the protection of Kabukicho.
* TheFaceless: His face is not shown until the Four Devas arc.
* AFatherToHisMen: According to Katsuo, he and the other members of Jirocho's faction were the outcasts of society before he took them in.
* GoodAllAlong: The biggest reason Kada (and, by proxy, the Harusame) hasn't taken over Kabukicho yet is because of the influence his faction has had all along.
* GoodIsNotNice: He might be out to protect Kabukicho, but he's not exactly friendly and well-mannered.
* GrumpyOldMan: He constantly complains about his old age and how the youngsters of today don't measure up to his own youth.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: His historical counterpart is Shimizu Jirocho, a famous member of the {{Yakuza}}.
* IaijutsuPractitioner: His preferred style is quickly drawing and resheathing his sword again for another quick-draw.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Despite loving Otose, he stepped aside when she married Tatsugoro and approved of their marriage.
* IWasQuiteALooker: He was indeed [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jirochu_otose_5698.jpg very attractive in his prime]]. And yes, that's Otose in the middle.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Although it ''really'' isn't obvious at first.
* KnightTemplarParent: After [[spoiler:returning to Kabukicho with Pirako]], he threatens to cut up anybody who touches his daughter.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Something like that, [[GoodAllAlong at least at first glance]].
* MasterSwordsman: Jirocho is a master of the sword on par with Gintoki and his skill is emphasized by his use of Iaijutsu, having the ability to quickly draw his sheathed sword to slash an opponent before sheathing it again.
* OldMaster: Has the appearance down and nobody wants to mess with him.
* OldSoldier: A renowned veteran of the Joi War.
* OneManArmy: Has the reputation to go and against Kada's EliteMooks he turns into a two-man army alongside fellow OneManArmy Gintoki.
* PassingTheTorch: After the Four Devas arc, he retires and hands over the reins of his organisation to Katsuo.
* PutOnABus: Leaves Kabukicho together with his daughter Pirako at the end of the Four Devas arc. [[spoiler:He later returns together with Pirako in the final arc of the series, helping in the fight against the Shinra warriors hired by the Altana Liberation Army.]]
* SecondLove: He was originally in love with Otose and might still be, but after Tatsugoro married her, Jirocho met and married Pirako's mom, though they later separated.
* SmokingIsCool: Smokes Tatsugoro's old [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiseru kiseru.]]
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: He grew up and fell in love with Otose, but didn't get together with her, letting Tatsugoro marry her instead.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He was best friends with Otose's husband Tatsugoro, but the two would often get in violent fist fights, before going out drinking together.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Does whatever is necessary to protect Kabukicho from being taken over.
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: Tragically distant from his daughter for most of her life, due to his promise to protect Kabukicho. Thankfully not the case by the end of the Four Devas Arc.
* {{Yakuza}}: He's the biggest Yakuza boss in Kabukicho.

!!Catherine
!!!Voiced by: Creator/YuuSugimoto (JP), Creator/LuciChristian (EN, movie), Yolanda Gil (Spain)

A middle-aged cat-eared Amanto whom Otose takes in. She [[ReformedCriminal used to be a]] [[IncrediblyLamePun cat-burglar]] and eventually got framed for larceny by Gintoki and his pals after trying to steal from them.

[[DeadpanSnarker Sharp-tongued and rather unpleasant]], she often gets called out on her "lack of manners" by Otose and often gets into fights with Kagura. However, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold she can be genuinely helpful and kind when she wants to]]. Especially remarkable for her strange accent and her [[AccentUponTheWrongSyllable uneven accentuation when she speaks]].
----
* AccentUponTheWrongSyllable: To the point where Otose remarks when she actually gets it right.
* AliensSpeakingEnglish: Probably explains why her accent is so weird, even in Japanese.
* ButterFace: She has a very nice body but her face is... weird to say the least.
* CatGirl: She's an Amanto who looks like a woman with cat ears.
* CatsAreMean: The least you can say about her is that she's... bitchy.
* ClassyCatBurglar: Subverted. She has the outfit but certainly not the class.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's prone to snarky comments at others' expense.
* GirlsWithMoustaches: Her BadFuture self in the second movie grows a beard, but tries to play it off as her being a CatGirl and the beard her whiskers.
* {{Gonk}}: She looks very weird compared to other female characters.
* IOweYouMyLife: Downplayed. Otose didn't save her from death but she did rescue her from a life on the streets by allowing her to work full time as a barmaid and taking her back in. As a result, Catherine is now Otose's most loyal attendant, along with Tama.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite her very unpleasant behaviour, she does care about other people, especially Otose whom she regards as a mother to her.
* ALizardNamedLiz: She's a CatGirl named Catherine.
* MasterOfUnlocking: Lockpicking is her specialty, which she got from her past as a cat burglar, to the point of being sent to free Saigo's son from his cell in the Four Devas Arc.
* ReformedCriminal: She used to be a thief until Otose hired her at her shop again despite Catherine stealing from her before.
* SmokingIsCool: Smokes cigarettes, though actually not that cool on her part.
* SpyCatsuit: When working as a thief, she wears a black catsuit, which also has a tail for some reason.
* TookALevelInKindness: When her true nature is discovered in her first appearance, she outright mocks Otose for being naive enough to trust her in the first place. After being given a second chance upon her release from prison, Catherine is shown to be devoted enough to put her own life on the line to protect Otose.
* UndyingLoyalty: See IOweYouMyLife above. Despite everything, Catherine is extremely devoted to Otose for having given her a second chance at life.

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tama_1_1226.png]]

Tama is a female android found as a disembodied robot head in a trash can one night by Gintoki and Kagura. She was named by Kagura, who was obsessed with eating egg on rice at the time. She seems to have some rather strange main functions, such as acting as an interactive interface for a ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' game.

Tama was originally a robot servant created by Dr. Hayashi to provide his sickly daughter with a companion. Hayashi tried to implant the personality of his daughter, Fuyo, into Tama, but the experiment killed his daughter in the process. He gradually became wracked by grief and his intentions became more and more selfishly twisted after the event. Tama came to possess the element known as the "Seed", and is therefore capable of human emotion in addition to retaining some of Fuyo's personality.

After the events of the Fuyo Arc (in which she was introduced), Tama was fully reconstructed and has since been employed at Otose's snack house where she is always seen working alongside Otose and Catherine.
----
* AllLovingHeroine: Tama is incredibly sweet, considerate and always eager to help others, humans and machine alike.
* BroomStickQuarterstaff: Uses a mop with an inbuilt flamethrower as her weapon.
* DisneyDeath: Twice! First her HeroicSacrifice and she is later on supposedly killed by Kintoki. Thankfully, Gengai was able to repair her both times.
* FantasticVoyagePlot: The subject of this when she comes down with an unknown virus.
* HeroicSacrifice:
** She sacrifices herself to stop the Terminal from blowing up at the end of the Fuyo Arc.
** And then again in [[spoiler: the last arc of the series, when she, Kintoki and the robots used the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Gengai Cannon in order to release a lethal machine virus on the air, which seemingly kills her too. However, the epilogue reveals that she survived, but was rendered inoperative for two years. The FramingDevice for the final chapter is a recording that Gintoki makes for Tama to get her up to speed on what occurred during the TimeSkip.]]
* {{Homage}}: She's a walking ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' reference and even has an [[FantasticVoyagePlot entire arc]] centered around this particular quirk.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: She uses a flamethrower... mop?
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Both when she is first discovered and after the Fuyo Arc comes to a close.
** Inverted in the Kintama Arc where she and Sadaharu are the only ones who remember Gintoki.
* LosingYourHead: The state she is initially found in and consequently named (as an egg-cracking device nonetheless).
* MachineEmpathy: She has the ability to communicate with other machines, such as checkout scanners and vending machines.
* NiceGirl: Possibly the nicest character in the entire series.
* ReplacementGoldfish: The entire point of the Fuyo Project was for Hayashi to implant his dying daughter's personality into a robot host. It ends in disaster.
* RobotMaid: Tama's robot model is based on a [[RobotGirl female robot]] {{meido}}.
* SpockSpeak: It's either this or an incessant barrage of ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' menu options asking for player input.
* TearsFromAStone: A result of carrying "the Seed", which [[ShoutOut basically makes her]] a "[[Anime/SaberMarionetteJ maiden circuit]]".
* UndyingLoyalty: Her greatest virtue is her utter devotion to her friends. Even when said friend is a rundown vending machine that gets thrown to a garbage dump, Tama faithfully stays by their side to the bitter end.
* {{Workaholic}}: Tama believes that her only purpose as a machine is to be of use to others. Otose often tries to get her to take a break from work and go relax sometimes, but if Tama is not allowed to work, she has no idea of what else to do.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Tama is gentle, docile, helpful, strong-willed, excellent at household chores, loyal to a fault, and completely dedicated to her "family".

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tae_shimura_1505.png]]

Shinpachi's violent and unhinged older sister. She runs the Kodōkan Dojo, the family dojo, with her brother, working part-time as a bar hostess to pay for the upkeep.

She is usually addressed as "Otae", although Kagura always addresses her as ''anego'' ("big sister" in Japanese informal speech), and the Shinsengumi call her ''nee-san'' ("big sister" in Japanese formal speech), which the usual honorific used to refer to a samurai leader's consort.

Despite her sweet face and cheerful demeanor, she is one of the most brutal characters in the show. She often delivers sound thrashings to Isao Kondo and Gintoki, or well, anyone else, whenever they anger her.
----
* ActionGirl: Not an active one, but woe to anyone who stand in her way when she does takes action.
* ACupAngst: She is sensitive about her small chest and beats up people who mock her for it. Especially shown when all the men turned AttractiveBentGender and had larger busts then her, causing her to go into a frothing rage.
* BadassInDistress: After being tied up and lowered into a pool of sharks by Otohime, she is freed by Kagura and Kyubei, then proceeds to beat up the sharks, Otohime's guards, and Otohime herself.
* BigBrotherMentor: Gender inverted figure. Somehow implies to be this for Kagura.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: A variation. She isn't exactly malevolent but she does put a front of kindness and sweetness to hide her much less pleasant real self.
* ChildhoodFriends: She was close friends with Kyubei as children. After Kyubei's introduction arc, they amend their friendship, but Kyubei still harbors romantic feelings for her.
* CoolBigSis: She acts like a big sister towards Kagura.
* CuteAndPsycho: Otae is cute, sweet, and smiling most of the time, but she also flies into a crazy, violent rage at the slightest disturbance. Some times she even continues acting like a sweet older sister while violently beating somebody up.
* DamselInDistress: In her first appearance, she is forced to work in the flying brothel No Underwear Shabu Shabu Heaven, but is saved by Gintoki and Shinpachi.
* DiseaseBleach: In the second movie's BadFuture her hair turns completely white after being infected with the White Curse.
* DissonantSerenity: Will happily tear people a new one and threaten them, all while keeping that perfectly happy smile on her face.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: In comedic situations, she regularly beats up male characters that are portrayed as much stronger than her, like Kondo or Gintoki. If one of them were to ever lay a hand on her, it wouldn't be portrayed as funny at all.
* {{Expy}}: Of ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'''s Kaoru, all the way to the violent rage (albeit more subdued in Kaoru's case), their LethalChef tendencies, being a HeirToTheDojo, trying to be a proper YamatoNadeshiko (as a bonus point, Kaoru only wields the naginata in the live-action films, something she doesn't do in the manga. Doubles as HilariousInHindsight), having a little brother figure (as noted on Shinpachi's section. In her case, actual little brother), and even ''having an unknown disease in a BadFuture-setting second OVA!'' (to be fair, the Remembrance OVA is not really that trope at all, just that it didn't make it end well for Kenshin and Kaoru).
* FetishizedAbuser: How Kondo sees her, though part of the reason is because he continues to stalk her despite the fact that she doesn't actually reciprocate his feelings.
* HairTriggerTemper: It doesn't take much for her to fly into a frothing rage.
* HeirToTheDojo: Together with Shinpachi.
* InSeriesNickname: She is often called Otae, which is simply adding the prefix "O" to her name, a respectful way to address a woman.
* IntertwinedFingers: Used between her and Kyubei. Which seems to speak for itself.
* JustFriends:
** A one-sided variant between her and Kyubei. While both were ChildhoodFriends, Kyubei continues to harbor feelings for Otae to the present day, whereas Otae sees them as her closest friend. Interestingly, the Dekobokko arc demonstrated that, while Kyubei was given the body of a man as "Yagyu Jubei", Otae expressed attraction to them, suggesting the only reason Otae doesn't reciprocate Kyubei's feelings is because Otae isn't sexually attracted to women.
** The Dekobokko arc demonstrates that, were it not for him obsessively stalking her, Otae and Kondo could actually be good friends, as once Kondo becomes "Goriko", she quits stalking Otae and the two end up becoming close friends when it looks like the change is permanent. Of course though, their relationship [[StatusQuoIsGod resets]] by the end when everyone returns to normal.
* KarmaHoudini: She is the one who least suffers throughout the gangs' antics.
* LethalChef: Tae burns anything she cooks and people eating it usually turn very sick, or even lose their memories. When Gengai gets his hands on some of her cooking he calls it some undiscovered foreign substance.
* MegatonPunch:
** For stalker gorillas and other undesirables.
** Parodied in the genderswap arc, where "Goriko" makes Otae blush, but still ends up getting accidentally punched by an embarrassed Otae.
* NaginatasAreFeminine: She strives to act like a [[YamatoNadeshiko traditional samurai lady]] and fittingly wields a naginata. Too bad about her lethal cooking and violent nature.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Most people call her only Otae.
* PerpetualSmiler: Always smiling and welcoming, even when she's about to [[DissonantSerenity fly into a violent rage.]]
* {{Sarashi}}: She wears bandages over her chest while pretending to be a gang member, as well as wearing an open robe over it.
* SlasherSmile: When she's being particularly vicious or sadistic, she often flashes a wide and wicked grin.
* StepfordSmiler: Viewed in-story as this by Shinpachi and Kyubei.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She loves eating Baagen-Dash ice cream. At one point she even gets fat from eating so many, forcing her to go to a diet boot camp alongside Kagura and Sacchan.
* UnwillingSuspension: After angering Otohime, she is tied up and suspended above a pool of sharks. Thanks to Kyubei and Kagura, she is freed, while the sharks are all beaten up.
* VerbalTic: She doesn't normally have one, but on two different occasions she adds a word to the end of her sentences.
** When Kagura appears to have left the show and the girls at the bar are competing who should replace her as heroine, Tae adds "aru" to the end of her sentences like Kagura, while also wearing a Chinese dress.
** In an attempt to pressure Gintoki and Hasegawa into buying Dom Perignon at the Snack Smile club, she adds "dom" to the end of her sentences, while her friend Oryo adds "peri" to hers, forming "dom peri" when speaking in succession.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Tae strives to act like a traditional samurai lady and she has the prim attitude, devotion to her family, and the naginata to fit the trope. However, her efforts are subverted by her violent nature and inability to cook.

The former head coach of the Shimura family dojo, the Kodokan. He was like a [[BigBrotherMentor big brother]] to Tae and Shinpachi back in their childhood and all three used to be very close. He later chose to travel to outer space to improve his skill, but was presumed killed during a teleportation incident at the Terminal.

He comes back late in the series and reunites with Tae and Shinpachi, hoping to help them revive their dojo with beam sabers. Through his feats from fighting in various battles in space, he has earned the title of ''Galaxy Sword Master''.

Unfortunately, it is quickly revealed that he is only alive thanks to his cybernetic half that was given to him by Amanto of Planet Beam. The Amanto found him on the brink of death after his ship had crashed and exploded. He was also infused with a split personality, called Kenofi, in the service of the Amanto who fixed him.
----
* AssShove: At one point gets a beam saber shoved up his ass by Tae when he suggested that she and Gintoki were dating.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Shinpachi who calls him ''Hajime-nii''.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: The cybernetic half of his body eventually assumes direct control.
* {{Cyborg}}: He is literally half robot.
* DeadAllAlong: A variation. His original self is still present but without his cybernetic equipment, he would die.
* ElectronicEye: He has one brown eye and one red cybernetic eye.
* FakeUltimateHero: The Amanto who saved him propped him up as some great galactic war hero, but in reality the Amanto had started the wars in the first place with the beams they put in his body.
* FirstLove: Hajime was Tae's first love, though considering their age differences at the time, he probably did not reciprocate.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a long scar that runs from his forehead, around his right eye and then to his right ear.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Blond all-around good guy. Too bad about the evil cybernetic half...
* HeroicSacrifice: He eventually takes out the Amanto that were about to destroy Earth by aiming the WaveMotionGun inside his body at them and dies in the process.
* InSeriesNickname: [[Franchise/StarWars Obi]]-[[PunnyName One]].
* LaserBlade: His weapon is a [[Franchise/StarWars light-]] we mean beam saber. He's also able to project a huge one from his hand thanks to his cyborg half.
* LivingOnBorrowedTime: He technically died at the accident in Terminal where the transfer device exploded and he lost the right half of his body. The Amanto of the planet Biimu revived him as a {{Cyborg}}.
* PerpetualSmiler: Always has an ear-to-ear smile plastered on his face. It's a clear indicator that his Kenofi persona is the one in control when he ''isn't'' smiling.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He's equipped with highly destructive beams.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: When his cyborg half takes over, both his eyes turn red.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: He wears a dotted red scarf.
* ShipperOnDeck: Briefly seems to be one for Gintoki and Tae, as he suggests the two were dating. [[AssShove Tae disagrees]].
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: What his Kenofi persona tries to do.
* WaveMotionGun: The Amanto who fixed him put a beam cannon in him, to be used to spark a war that would lead to Earth's destruction. He ends up using it to destroy the aliens.

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gengai_hiraga_5946.png]]

Gengai is an old man renowned as the best mechanic in Edo. He is an expert in making robots, but he is just as capable as making and fixing other kinds of machines. As a result, whenever the Yorozuya have technical problems they always go to him. His son Saburo died during the war, a fact that still haunts him to this day.

When he first appears, he is manipulated by Takasugi into trying to kill the shogun during a festival to avenge his son, but is talked down by the Yorozuya. Despite being a wanted man, he continues to work as a mechanic in Kabukicho while his status as a criminal is rarely brought up.
----
* BadassDriver: Since he is not a physical fighter, his main contribution is driving a freaking tank into battle.
* CloudCuckooLander: He's actually pretty restrained most of the time, but he has some rather odd ideas, like how to turn mecha-Tama into an attractive woman (which involved adding a huge butt to the mecha).
* CoolOldGuy: Still a competent mechanic in his old age.
* DeathSeeker: Takasugi manages to prod him into trying to kill the Shogun to avenge his son, but he admits to Gintoki he never had any intention of succeeding and only wanted to die in the attempt. He is ultimately talked out of it.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: In a freaking tank.
* TheEngineer: Anything that's mechanical is usually left for him to handle.
* GadgeteerGenius: He builds and maintains almost anything. Even weapons! What do you mean you modified Lake Toya to squirt soy sauce!?
* GogglesDoNothing: Actually, being a mechanic, they do serve a purpose. However, he never takes them off even when he's not working.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a stitched scar on top of his head.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Based on Hiraga Gennai, who was a pharmacologist, physician, author, painter, and inventor of the Edo period.
* MadScientist: The rare benevolent kind.
* MrFixit: If anybody has a mechanical problem they go to him.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: He had the great misfortune of having to witness his son's [[DecapitationPresentation decapitated head being presented in public]] during the Joi War.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:If it weren't for him creating the weapon that would nullify all machines including from both Edo and the Altana Liberation Army's sides to give former a better chance; Earth would have been heavily curb stomped by just the Army's technological advantage like how the Amanto won back then.]]

----
* DecapitationPresentation: His head was displayed in public in Edo near one of the rivers, which his father Gengai witnessed.
* TheEngineer: During the war he served as the engineer and mechanic of the Kiheitai.
* NonActionGuy: According to Takasugi he was no good with a sword, but a very good mechanic.
* OffWithHisHead: His head was cut off when he was executed.

----
* ArmCannon: Gengai equips him with a cannon in his arm for the festival the shogun is attending. While it initially shoots fireworks, it also fires a smokescreen at the audience to make them run away, before he arms it with actual ammunition against the Shinsengumi.
* DisneyDeath: He is seemingly destroyed by Gintoki during the festival and even gives Gengai a dying speech, but is later repaired by him.
* TheQuietOne: Since he is a robot with limited artificial intelligence, he doesn't speak much and mostly just says "affirmative".
* ReplacementGoldfish: Gengai regards the robots as his sons after his real son died and even named Saburo after him.
* RobotBuddy: He is Gengai's main robot, often serving as his assistant, and he has some degree of artificial intelligence.

!!Taizo "Madao" Hasegawa
!!!Voiced by: Creator/FumihikoTachiki (JP), Creator/TedCole (EN, series), Creator/ChrisAyres (EN, movie), Creator/JaimeRoca (Spain)
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hasegawa_madao_8188.png]]

A close acquaintance of the Yorozuya Gin, introduced as an official working for the Bakufu. After an incident with Amanto dignitary Prince Hata, whom he was assigned to serve and protect, he fled. He has consequently become homeless, jobless, and a heavy drinker and survives pretty much the same way Gintoki and his pals do: doing pretty much anything he can get paid for.

He is often referred to as "Madao," which stands for "totally useless middle-aged man" in Japanese. In the English translation, it's either "middle-aged dumb-ass oldie," or abbreviated to "dork,": "dumb old retarded kook."
----
* ActionSurvivor: One of the least action-oriented males of the series, yet still capable of coming out on top in dangerous situations.
* AlmightyJanitor: Subverted. Despite having bouts of HiddenDepths, his epiphanies and reflective speeches are often ignored by everyone.
* AmicableExes: While he's not officially divorced with his wife, he and Hatsu are almost always in good, friendly terms when interacting with each other.
* BungledSuicide: Daigoro, a kid doing a summer project about the life of a Madao, notes that his Madao was sad because it [[ChildrenAreInnocent "tried to make a swing,"]] but accidentally messed it up.
* ButtMonkey: While everyone in the show gets their share of misfortune, things keep getting worse and worse for him.
* CardboardBoxHome: He's taken living with cardboard to the extreme, not only sleeping in various cardboard box houses, but has made cardboard suits, cardboard mecha-armor, a cardboard camcorder, etc...
* TheChewToy: Hasegawa's only purpose in the show is to suffer setback after setback, making the audience either laugh at him or feel bad for him. His luck is so titanically bad that the Prosecution arc shows the Yorozuya, who are his only allies, are willing to abandon him to save themselves.
* CoolShades: Parodied. Although he starts off as a high-ranking official in the government, he becomes less cool and far more loserly as the series goes on. On the other hand, they sorta invoke the image of [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Gendo Ikari]], whom Creator/FumihikoTachiki also voices.
** In a hilarious demonstration, during the Ryugujo Arc, he is shown to have the fighting power of something around 600K (K for ''kelp,'' and regular humans possessing roughly 360 times K, Shinpachi had 364). That is, until he drops his sunglasses and it's revealed that device was reading data from said sunglasses and his actual fighting power was a mere 1K, i.e. on the same level as kelp. ''"It's true, Madao is nothing more than a pair of sunglasses."''
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Who would've though a laid-back, easy-going homeless guy would hold such a fierce streak in times of need?
* DeterminedDefeatist: Even though he often feels as if he's got no chance of getting his wife back, securing a stable job, or finding a place to live, he is still determined to try anyway. He often finds himself sinking to the depths of despair, but he always finds some way to climb out of it--whether it be through [[EpiphanyTherapy his own epiphanies]] or with the help of his friends.
* DrivenToSuicide: Hasegawa has been shown to be depressed to the point of contemplating and attempting suicide numerous times. Fortunately, various circumstances, both extenuating and deliberate, have foiled his attempts.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Madao.
* FakeUltimateHero: [[spoiler:Two years later, Hasegawa takes the credit in saving the Earth from destruction when everyone else did most of the work to defeat Utsuro. To be fair, he did motivate the Amanto into working to stop the Heavenly Bird from crashing into Edo and needed the credit to get him out of being homeless. However, he spent it as being a celebrity and not even reuniting with Hatsu. This bites him back HARD in the remaining final chapters when the Tendoshu returns.]]
* FatalFlaw: He's had many chances to pull himself out of the gutter, but his [[OddFriendship unwavering friendship with the Yorozuya]] and [[HeroicSacrifice his tendency to sacrifice his own happiness and comfort for others]] has proven to be quite fatal for his chances at holding a stable job. However it is intentional on his part as he is actually selfless and that he can leave his gutter lifestyle when he wants to. Best shown when [[spoiler:not only he gave all his money he has been collecting to Gintoki to pay his debt to him, but he is willing to fight to protect Earth.]]
* FriendlessBackground: Before his introduction to the series being fired from his job, Hasegawa didn't have any real friends. This seems to be because he was a bit of a [[{{Jerkass}} jerk]] to all of his subordinates, orchestrating the government's various agendas [[MeanBoss with an aloof yet ruthless efficiency]].
* GayOption: Was the lone guy in Gintoki's UnwantedHarem during the Scandal arc. [[spoiler: He gets bonus points for being the ''only'' person who actually did the deed with Gintoki.]]
* HappilyMarried: While his wife Hatsu is living separately from him, he is devoted to her. [[spoiler: The Prosecution arc reveals that she is equally devoted to him as well.]]
* HesBack: [[spoiler:He stops being a bum and is wearing his old uniform again... to show that he plans on fighting as Samurai!]]
* HiddenDepths: He has tons. In fact, if you take out his butt-monkey style, Hasegawa is easily one of the best if not the best person in the series. He has been having countless chances of turning his life around but eventually ruined them himself for the sakes of other people. Pathetic as he may seem, you gotta admire the man's selflessness.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: At one point, puts on a facade in order to dissuade a caring family from taking him in.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: ''Very loosely'' based on [[https://mylittledejima.com/2017/01/08/the-unfulfilled-ambition-of-an-edo-police-chief-inspector/ Hasegawa Heizou]], a notorious ''18th'' century Bakufu police officer known by his nickname, ''Onihei''. Now, like Saigo above, how Sorachi turned a legendary lawman figure into a slackster hobo is up to the readers' imagination.
* {{Hobos}}: A rather benevolent and dignified one.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: He says something to this effect to [[spoiler:Gin during the Scandal Arc]]. Though he mainly tries to stay as faithful to Hatsu as he can, he's oggled a few women and visited a few hostess bars throughout the series. He's also displayed a kind of cool understanding when it looked like [[NotWhatItLooksLike Gin was 'doing a thing' with Hattori]]. In this case, however, it's unclear if he just happens to be bi, or if the idea of being in a serious relationship with [[spoiler:Gintoki]] is appealing enough to Hasegawa that he'd jump across the sexuality spectrum for him.
--> '''Hasegawa''': I wouldn't mind falling to the bottom of society with you. That's how I feel now.
* InterruptedSuicide: In the episode "Madaodog Madaonaire," Hasegawa meets the little girl that he would later take care of after she stops him just as he was standing on a block of wood, about to hang himself. She says that she knew what to do because her dad used to do a lot of [[ChildrenAreInnocent "hanging around"]] too.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Gintoki, [[VagueAge who is somewhere between a decade or two younger than him]].
* KeepTheReward: He's somehow able to win 10,000,000 yen on a [[WhoWantsToBeWhoWantsToBeAMillionaire Who Wants To Be A Millionaire rip off]], and immediately gives it all away--[[PerpetualPoverty in spite of his own financial dire straights]]--to help a family that's struggling to be together because of the father's massive debt. [[spoiler: Then cruelly subverted when it turns out his real debt is 20 million, which gets forfeited ''because'' he walked out before the real final question]].
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: After meeting and befriending Gin, Hasegawa went from being an inconsiderate jerk who was willing to sacrifice anything for the greater good, to being a selfless, understanding man who is willing to live in absolutely demoralizing conditions as long as he's able to "live life standing tall."
* MegatonPunch: Punches Prince Hata into the sky when he has enough of his complaints.
* NewJobAsThePlotDemands: Though it's obvious why he can't hold down a stable job (thanks to his bad luck and wild friends), the jobs he does have from episode to episode are usually super convenient to the plot. For example, being a lifeguard when the Shogun just happens to want to take a swim, or working at a festival when there just happens to be a festival episode.
* NotWithThemForTheMoney: This is his relationship with Hatsu. He came from a poor samurai family, and she was unobtainably above him in terms of social class. So in order to be with the woman he loved, he married into her family instead of the other way around and never tried to use her wealth for his own personal gain. Even though Hatsu could probably support them both with her vast wealth, Hasegawa believes that he needs a stable job to prove his dedication and worthiness before even attempting to get back with her.
* OddFriendship: You'd think after all of the misfortune and misery Gintoki (an ex-Joi patriot) has brought upon him (an ex-bakufu official), they'd be bitter rivals, but somehow they've found [[BirdsOfAFeather camaraderie in poverty]] instead.
* ParentalSubstitute: Somehow, he seems to be a magnet for kids with [[DisappearedDad deadbeat, absentee dads]]. He usually ends up turning into a surrogate father who forms such a strong bond that, before long, [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy he'll end up sacrificing everything he has so that the kids will be able to have their old dads back]].
* PerpetualPoverty: After his redundancy. [[spoiler:It turns out that he's been saving his money to pay his debt to Gintoki by TONS and the next thing he does... put his old uniform on and stands up to the invading Altana Liberation Army who are hostile to Earth citizens.]]
* RunningGag: His nickname, Madao.
* {{Seppuku}}: After the Yorozuya first meet Hasegawa and inspire him to impulsively mess up his job, ([[MegatonPunch by punching Prince Hata]], an important Amanto figure, [[MegatonPunch into the stratosphere]],) his boss orders him to commit [[{{Seppuku}} suicide by harakiri]]. Instead of following through, he christens himself a coward, flees his job, and sinks into obscurity. This later becomes a plot point when he has to stand trial for a mostly unrelated crime, his refusal of seppuku [[OffWithHisHead potentially dooming him]] if the information had been made public.
* SmokingIsCool: Not that it makes ''him'' any less of a loser, though...
* TalkingDownTheSuicidal: When Hasegawa is imprisoned in the Prosecution Arc, he becomes so wrought with despair over losing what he saw was his last chance with his wife that he repeatedly asks Gintoki to bring him a rope to hang himself with. Gintoki [[FriendshipMoment reaffirms just how far he's willing to go for a friend.]]
--> '''Gintoki''': Oh yeah, and about that rope. I'll bring it next time I come. I have no intention of getting you a rope so you can hang yourself. But... If it's a rope to pull you out of hell, then I'll bring you as many as you want.
* ThatDidntHappen: Essentially what he says to Gin the first time they see each other after [[spoiler:their [[WhatDidIDoLastNight one night stand]].]]
--> '''[[CigaretteOfAnxiety Hasegawa:]]''' [[DrowningMySorrows Get drunk and forget it ever happened.]] [[INeedAFreakingDrink I'll do the same.]] [[spoiler:[[ThatDidntHappen Last night didn't happen.]]]]
* TookTheWifesName: He agreed to take Hatsu's family name when they married instead of the opposite, as she comes from a higher social class. Despite Hatsu leaving him, he still uses the Hasegawa name.
* TheTramp: Rather than a member of the CrazyHomelessPeople since he is much more sympathetic and much less slovenly than your average bum.
* WisdomFromTheGutter: The lower he sinks socially and economically, the more insight he finds in life. Too bad almost no one is willing to listen to him or ask him for advice because they only see him as a good-for-nothing Madao.

A recurring minor character, an old homeless man usually seen with Hasegawa. His name actually isn't Musashi, but it's what he is listed as in the credits.
----
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: His mind is a weird place. When asked about a music producer, he wondered aloud whether it was edible.
* CrazyHomelessPeople: Much straighter example than Hasegawa.
* DirtyOldMan: Hits on Tsukuyo when she comes by to ask about one of Suzuran's former customers.
* ForgetfulJones: PlayedForDrama. [[spoiler:When he was younger, he nearly drowned while saving a boy who would eventually become his son-in-law. While he survived, he was left with brain damage that causes him to forget everything about himself every day.]]

The Hard-Boiled Detective, a man with tough looks who's been on the hunt for the fox thief Chogoro for years. However, despite his tough looks, Kozenigata is not a competent officer. He has a tendency to ramble in monologues and getting sidetracked, either by alcohol or sex clubs. He's usually accompanied by his younger partner Haji.
----
* TheAlcoholic: He's constantly downing alcohol, such as his favorite camus.
* ButtMonkey: He regularly screws up his own job, ties himself up with his own weapons, and also gets beat up on top of it.
* CoolShades: Makes him look even cooler.
* CowardlyLion: He's not particularly brave, but if somebody's in danger he'll step up to the plate.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Zigzagged. He actually ''looks'' competent and tries to act the part, but he's really bad at his job. However, in a real pinch he's able to help out in a fight, even taking out a Naraku while fighting alongside Hijikata.
* HardboiledDetective: He's a parody of this type of character, complete with constant monologuing, but is actually not good at his job.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He throws coins attached with strings as weapons. Surprisingly effective, when he doesn't accidentally tie himself up with it.
* LawmanBaton: He carries a jutte, a small metal baton with a hook used by policemen at the time.
* SmokingIsCool: Smokes a mean cigar.
* TakingTheBullet: He pushes Hijikata out of the way of an attacking Naraku, taking a sword slash down the chest while killing said Naraku.
* TooKinkyToTorture: He indulges in masochism like a certain kunoichi and at one point during the Silver Soul Arc, he was trying out the [[GroinAttack Z Course]] while getting tortured in ''middle of a war''.

----
* HyperCompetentSidekick: While Kozenigata is the better fighter, Haji is far more competent at actually working as a policeman despite being his sidekick.
* KidSidekick: She seems to be much younger than Kozenigata, whom she works under.
* LawmanBaton: As can be seen in her character image, she carries a jutte, a small metal baton with a hook used by policemen.

----
* TheAce: He's looked up to virtually everybody who knows about him, including Gintoki and Jirocho.
* FairCop: Not bad on the eyes for a cop.
* LawmanBaton: Along with his sword he also used a jutte, a small metal baton with a hook used by policemen. Jirocho recalls him often playfully throwing it around in his hand while on patrol and Otose still keeps it in a shrine to her husband.
* PermaStubble: Always shown with a fair bit of unshaven stubble on his chin.
* PosthumousCharacter: Died long before the series began.

----
* AdaptationDyeJob: A minor case, as a much later color page shows his hair to be black and his clothes to be white in the manga.
* AffablyEvil: He's more antagonistic than outright evil, but acts pretty laidback with his supposed enemies anyway.
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''atsuo '''K'''urogoma.
* BeleagueredAssistant: Of Jirocho, as is implied many times in his first appearances.
* CharacterTic: He has a habit of smoothing his hair back.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Smashes alien {{Ninja}}s through roofs and walls with nothing but sheer physical strength.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Goes to town on Kada's assassins, beating them up with his bare hands.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: A stitched scar across his face isn't exactly heroic, though he isn't exactly evil.
* GracefulLoser: Takes his first loss at Gintoki's hands pretty well and backs off when he realizes it's more trouble than worth.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Based on Kurokoma no Katsuzo, a Yakuza boss from the late Edo period.
* OralFixation: Constantly seen with a large toothpick in his mouth.

Despite her happy-go-lucky appearance and her perpetual smile, she soon reveals herself as a sadistic, bloodthirsty PsychoForHire, in the service of Kada, whose goal is to infiltrate Kabukicho's line of defense and facilitate Kada's takeover, in exchange of being reunited with her father, Jirocho.
----
* AntiVillain: She just wants to go back home with her dad, no matter the method required.

* CuteAndPsycho: Happy, adorable, smiling, murderous... wait what?

* DaddysLittleVillain: A variation. Jirocho was antagonistic but not a real villain and she was simply gullible enough to believe Kada would keep her word.
* DarkActionGirl: She's absolutely vicious in her methods.
* EmptyEyes: Her eyes have no shine in them, the first sign that she's not exactly who she says she is. Her eyes finally gain shine when she and her father set on a journey together.
* GracefulLoser: Upon facing the Yorozuya-Gin after Kada's defeat, she throws her sword at their feet and kneels in submission, saying she's now ready to pay for what she has done to the Kabukicho district. But Gintoki has other plans for her and instead sends her off to her long-lost father.
* IdiotHair: Gintoki often takes advantage of her unruly hair to catch her.
* TheMole: She works for Kada, at least at the beginning.

* {{Sarashi}}: Wears one under her kimono, which is usual for Japanese {{Action Girl}}s, both in fiction and in RealLife.

After the death of his sick son Kantaro, he sets his sights on his grandson Kanshichiro to become his heir and succeed him. 563* KarmaHoudini: After reforming himself and giving back Kanshichiro to Ofusa, he suffers no consequences for his actions. Ofusa even forgives him and allows him to visit Kanshichiro as his grandfather.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Realises at the end of the arc that despite promising to give Kantaro a happy if short life, he mostly brought him suffering by forcing him to stay in bed at home and taking him away from his lover Ofusa. He also realises the suffering he's causing by trying to take away Kanshichiro and gives him back to his mother.
* NonActionGuy: He is a businessman, not a warrior, so he leaves all the fighting to his hired ronin like Nizo.
* WouldHitAGirl: He is not afraid to hit Ofusa despite being defenseless and held by his men. He even tries to have her tortured to reveal where Kanshichiro is, but they are interrupted by Kagura, Shinpachi and Hasegawa.

* IdenticalStranger: He has the same wavy silver hair and dead fish eyes as Gintoki, and passed it on to his son Kanshichiro, causing people to confuse him as Gintoki's son. Though Ofusa's message addressing Gintoki as the father didn't help.

* PermaStubble: Reinforcing the whole "okama" thing, he always has very prominent stubble around his mouth.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: He is a friendly person and a crossdresser, though not very convincing.

Kyoshiro is the owner and frontman of Takamagahara, the #1 host club in Kabukicho. His real name is actually Hachiro Kuroita. He came to Edo from the countryside to work as a host, and along with his name changed his appearance through plastic surgery. He is first encountered by the Yorozuya when his mom comes to Edo looking for him. After thinking his best friend Hachiro was her son, since he had the same name and appearance, the Yorozuya learn it is actually Kyoshiro she is looking for.
----
* AgentPeacock: Despite his pretty face, fabulous clothes and non-violent occupation, he is actually a decent fighter with a sword, taking part in defending Kabukicho from invaders.
* BishieSparkle: The air is often filled with sparkles when he appears, highlighting how pretty he is.
* TheCharmer: He is the number 1 host in Kabukicho, and his job is to charm and entertain women.

Hachiro is Kyoshiro's best friend, who works with him at the host club Takamagahara. He used to be a host himself, but a mishap with surgery caused him to work as an assistant instead. He used to be a girl with the name Hanako (not to be confused with Snack Smile's Hanako), but went through surgery and took the name Hachiro, which coincidentally is his friend Kyoshiro's original name. When Kyoshiro's mom and the Yorozuya come looking for him, they initially think he is her son, only to learn it is actually Kyoshiro.
----
* FunnyAfro: He has an enormous afro, which is so big he can hide his cellphone in it.
* {{Gonk}}: His ugliness after his surgery accident is repeatedly emphasized, with his enlargened lips, broad nose and uni-brow. This is especially contrasted with the attractive men he works alongside, like his best friend Kyoshiro.
* IdenticalStranger: He somehow looks exactly like how the Yorozuya speculated the actual Hachiro would look like, complete with the afro, uni-brow and mustache they doodled on his picture.
* RedHerring: He is initially believed to be the Hachiro that his mother is looking for, as he has the same name and resembles the picture that the Yorozuya had drawn of how he could possibly look. It is actually Kyoshiro she is looking for, as Hachiro took the name and appearance after he went through surgery.
* SharpDressedMan: As he works in a host club, he is always dressed in a beige suit.

Tetsuko is a swordsmith in Kabukicho and Tetsuya's younger sister. As children of renowned swordsmith Jintetsu Murata, the two run the swordsmith shop together. She meets Gintoki when her brother Tetsuya hires him to track down the stolen Benizakura. When Gintoki is severely injured by Nizo wielding Benizakura, she requests his help in stopping Tetsuya and the Kiheitai's development of the weapon. After Tetsuya dies during the incident, she runs the shop by herself.
----
* ActionGirl: While not a particularly accomplished fighter she is capable of wielding a sword and later fights with a large blacksmithing hammer to defend Kabukicho.
* TheAtoner: She feels responsible for standing by and letting her brother work with the Kiheitai to develop Benizakura, and thus seeks out Gintoki to stop him.
* TheBlacksmith: Took up her father's craft as a swordsmith alongside her brother. After her brother's death, she runs the shop herself.
* CoolSword: In order for Gintoki to stand up to Nizo and Benizakura, she makes him a steel sword with an awesome looking guard in the shape of a coiled dragon. Gintoki disagrees on the coolness, though, as he feels the coiled dragon looks like poop.
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: She is blue-haired and initially rather shy, but she grows out of it to become more confident and open.
* WrenchWench: She is a female swordsmith, a rather unfeminine profession, which is also reflected in her clothes.

Feeling overshadowed by his father's legacy, Tetsuya is completely obsessed with surpassing him. He forged Benizakura for Takasugi in an attempt to make the ultimate sword, basing it on the original sword made by his father. In order for Benizakura to grow more powerful, he hires Gintoki to search for the "missing" sword, only for him to meet Nizo wielding it and almost getting killed.

* TheBlacksmith: Took up his father's craft as a swordsmith alongside his sister.
* HeroicSacrifice: Dies saving his sister from Benizakura.

* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Serves with the Kiheitai throughout the Benizakura arc, but redeems himself by saving his sister at the cost of his own life.
* TakingTheBullet: Pushes Tetsuko out of the way when the Benizakura-possessed Nizo attacks her, dying as a result.
* UltimateBlacksmith: He mixed together swordsmithing and Amanto technology in order to create Benizakura, a powerful sword capable of destroying battleships. Benizakura also hosts an artificial intelligence that takes over the wielder's body like a parasite, and has the ability to grow smarter with every battle.

Kanbei the Luck Reader is a legendary gambler known for the ability to read the flow of luck with his right eye. Forced to cut out his right eye to save a friend, he now resorts to cheating to win. He meets Gintoki and Hasegawa at one of Kada's gambling parlors and wins back the clothes they lost while gambling. 807* HypocriticalHumor: He chastises Gintoki and Hasegawa for gambling without any skill or luck, and thus being stripped down to their underwear. After he accidentally leaves behind the tools he cheat with, he is subsequently stripped down to his underwear after losing.
* InTheHood: Wears a dark hood over his head when first appears, making him look like a reaper and scaring both Gintoki and Hasegawa.
* ProfessionalGambler: He is a legendary gambler who lives off his trade.
* SmokingIsCool: For added coolness while gambling, he smokes a cigar.
* ThereAreTwoKindsOfPeopleInTheWorld: According to him, there are two types of gamblers in the world: Those who simply love to gamble and those who think they are cool when gambling. He pegs both Gintoki and Hasegawa as the latter type, but they refute by calling themselves a third type: Those who are desperate to make money.

When he is not being a thief, he serves drinks at a street bar that Kozenigata frequents. He is a former member of the Nine-Tailed Fox Gang of Thieves, a group of nine thieves trained as ninjas, but he split from them 30 years ago during a robbery in Kyoto. They later commit various murders in Kyoto and frames him for it, forcing him out of retirement as he sends out a calling card to steal a golden tofu.
----
* BringIt: He challenges Kozenigata and the Yorozuya to pursue him with a wave of his hand.
* CoolMask: He wears a white fox mask.
* CoolOldGuy: A friendly old man who runs a bar and is also a very competent thief.
* DefectorFromDecadence: He split from the Nine-Tailed Fox Gang 30 years ago in Kyoto, saving Kozenigata after the gang had murdered his parents.
* EyesAlwaysShut: He always keeps his eyes shut, making them resemble the eyeslits on his fox mask.
* FrameUp: He is framed as a murderer by the rest of the Nine-Tailed Fox Gang, forcing him to come out of retirement as a thief.
* GentlemanThief: He may be a thief, but he mostly steals from the rich or criminals, and even gives some of what he steals to the poor. He also never harms anybody, which is the reason Kozenigata refuses to believe he's become a murderer. He's right as Chogoro has actually been framed by his former comrades.
* InTheBack: At the end of the arc he is stabbed in the back by his replacement in the Nine-Tailed Fox Gang. He still manages to survive his injury on top of falling into the fire.

Hoichi is the boss of the stray cats in Kabukicho. Despite his strict rule and violent reputation, he is only out to protect the other stray cats by preventing them from getting into trouble with humans. When Gintoki and Katsura are turned into cats, and Kondo is turned into a gorilla, he takes them under his wing. After an attempted mutiny by the other cats, he is captured along with the other cats by Katsuo for the Amanto of Planet Catnip. While he protects the other cats from a huge beast, Gintoki, Katsura and Kondo come to the rescue and help them escape.

He used to be human, but became a cat 13 years ago. Back when he was human, he was a lowly killer working for the yakuza. One day he found and became attached to a kitten, which taught him the value of life. He made a promise never to kill again, which got him into trouble with his employer, who sent him on a suicide mission. When the cat sacrificed itself to save him, he awoke to find himself in the body of the cat, while his own body laid lifeless and surrounded by corpses.
----
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He's the boss of the stray cats by virtue of being the strongest.
* TheAtoner: He sees being turned into a cat as penance for his crimes while alive and for breaking his promise not to kill.
* DavidVsGoliath: Hoichi fights a giant beast to protect the other stray cats. Despite the massive size and strength difference, he manages to hold his own and cause it several injuries, until Gintoki inspires the other cats to help take it down.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: He only provokes and fights newly arrived cats like Gintoki to test if they have what it takes to survive in Kabukicho. His tough attitude towards the other cats and his strict rule is also purely to keep them in line so that they won't get themselves killed.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He may be rude and aggressive, but he goes out of his way to protect other cats. He even helps out Gintoki, Katsura and Kondo-turned-gorilla with finding food.
* LargeAndInCharge: The boss cat of Kabukicho is both bigger and stronger than all the other cats.
* MoralityPet: While he was still human and a lowly killer, he found a stray kitten that he became attached to. That taught him the value of life and made him promise to no longer kill people. When he was later about to be killed, the cat jumped in the way to save him, after which he killed his attackers at the cost of his own life, only to awake in the cat's body.
* OldSoldier: He is a tough old cat who is bigger and stronger than the rest. He is even able to fight against a giant alien beast to protect the other cats.
* TakingTheBullet: Stands in the way of several thrown pieces of rubble to shield the cowering cats behind him, getting severely injured in the process.
* {{Yakuza}}: He was a lowly yakuza back when he was human.

A replacement robot that Kagura and Shinpachi had Gengai build since Gintoki left them. He winds up brainwashing the whole cast and the whole Kabukicho with FakeMemories of him as the protagonist of the series.
----
* AiIsACrapshoot: Even turned against his creator Gengai.
* ArcVillain: Of the Kintama Arc.
* BigBadWannabe: Saw himself as the BigBad whose defeat would result in the series ending for good, allowing him to be the star of his own series. Boy was he proven wrong.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Since he's [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Gintoki]]'s opposite, it goes without saying.
* BreakTheHaughty: The recipient of it, when after a brutal beatdown, the Yorozuya creates a dream anime for him, only to constantly humiliate him and tear it down.
* BreakThemByTalking: Does it to Gintoki by convincing him his whole life was a lie which he made up in his head because of watching Kintoki's accomplishments from afar. Tama and Sadaharu both manage to bring Gintoki out of it again though.
* TheBusCameBack: Kintoki was left alive after being beaten at the end of his arc, but didn't make any more appearances until the Silver Soul arc, where he returns [[spoiler:to aid Gengai and Tama in using the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Gengai Cannon!]]
* CastingGag: He's voiced by Creator/YuuichiNakamura, who is best friends with Creator/TomokazuSugita in real-life.
* EvilCounterpart: To Gintoki.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He tries to act polite, but his mockery of Gintoki and his sheer delight in his suffering shines through.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Was made into a "Perfect Gintoki" to act as the leader of Odd Jobs while the real Gintoki was away.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Happens in the last arc of the series, when he along Tama and the robots used the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Gengai Cannon in order to release a lethal machine virus on the air. That virus would affect him too leading to his death... [[SubvertedTrope Or not.]] As he ends up surviving and is tasked with caring for Tama's body until she reactivates.]]
* KickTheDog: Apart from convincing Gintoki his whole life was a lie, there's also his vicious attack on Tama, which he frames Gintoki for.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Gintoki literally creates a dream anime for him just to destroy it.
* PaletteSwap: He has the same clothes as Gintoki, except the black and white of his outfit are inverted and he has blond straight hair instead of the silver perm.
* ParodySue: A ''villainous'' example. Kintoki is a robot who is created by Gengai at Shinpachi's and Kagura's request to be a literal replacement of the protagonist Gintoki, but better in every way. Kintoki then turns into a BlackHoleSue by brainwashing everyone to make them think he was the protagonist all along instead of Gintoki and plans to have ''Gintama'' cancelled to turn it into a romance series where he's the last man with balls in the entire world so he can be the protagonist in a show that revolves entirely around him. Gintoki and his friend defeat him because a flawed protagonist like Gintoki and a colorful cast where everyone can be a main character far surpasses a MartyStu fantasy.
* PunnyName: When you use his name for the title instead of Gintoki's, you end up with ''Kin''tama (a homophone of the word for 'testicles' in Japanese).
* ReplacementGoldfish: Started out as a replacement for Gintoki, who was absent for a while.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: Done on purpose.
* SmugSnake: His sheer confidence in his control over Kabukicho proves to be his undoing, as his brainwashing wears off. He also boasts of how destroying him would reset everybody's memories, while his own data is transferred to another body to live out his own dream series, but it is completely torn down.
