The main character of the series (aside from ''SIN''). The son of Hiroyuki Kazami, the designer and programmer of Asurada, Hayato becomes the driver of the car while delivering to the Fujioka track when the machine was attacked. Although he manages to bring the car to the Sugo team safely, his driving data is locked into the machine's computer, which leaves him no choice but to be the main driver for the team. Shortly after obtaining the "Super License" in the All-Japan Grand Prix, Hayato becomes the youngest CF racer ever.

In the main series, Hayato has the most World Championships with 4. He can go Zero and has mastered the techniques Inertial Drift and Lifting Turn, and once he uses them, these makes him almost impossible to be defeated.

----
* AccidentalAthlete: After rescuing Asurada from thieves, Team Sugo realizes his potential and performs surprisingly well in races.
* BadassInDistress: He is held prisoner in the hotel room in episode 7 of ''SAGA'', and yet he returns to race that day.
* BrokenPedestal: In the TV series, he looks up to Osamu as a BigBrotherMentor, but in ''Double-One'' he finds out that Osamu re-enters Cyber Formula to declare Hayato as his enemy ''and'' he easily defeats him and the other racers in the British Grand Prix. He was really shocked and angered by his actions.
** RebuiltPedestal: After he finds out the truth of why Osamu does so and regains his respect for him at the end.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: His Asurada in later models has the letter "S" in them, which stands for Sugo, the team he is in, and his racing suit in the [=OVAs=] has the Sugo logo, which also has the "S" on them.
* CarFu: He hits Smith's helicopter with his Asurada GSX, which allows Bootsvorz to do the same thing.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Asuka, which grows into engagement and finally marriage at the final ending of ''SIN''.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: He makes friends with racers after a few or more races with them.
* {{Determinator}}: One of his most defining traits. For an example, in EP 26 of TV series, his car has engine trouble but he manages to get into the finish line at the last second and he wins the race.
* DieOrFly: He learned his Lifting Turn technique while in this state in ''Saga'' and also in ''11'', as a result, he learned the Inertial Drift.
* DisappearedDad: His father Hiroyuki, the person who created the AI supercomputer for his car, [[spoiler:was killed by Smith, who wanted to use Asurada as a weapon of mass destruction.]]
* DubNameChange: In the Korean dub, he is named Kang Jin-woo.
* FallingIntoTheCockpit: How he got into CF: He was on his way to deliver Asurada GSX to the race track when the machine was attacked and he drove the machine into the racetrack.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:With Asuka at the end of ''SIN''.]]
* HesBack: More than once. Like in [=EP=] 3 of ''ZERO'', he returns to racing to overcome the "ghost" of the Zero Zone. Asuka wasn't too happy with this, though, and she broke off her engagement with him. She later made it up with Hayato after the misunderstanding and helped him to overcome his fear.
* TheHero: For most of the series until Kaga takes up the role in ''SIN''.
** KidHero: In the TV series, as he was 14 at the time.
* HeroicBSOD: More than a few times, but especially in episode 22 of the TV series [[spoiler:when he learned that his father, the man who made Asurada, is dead.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Kaga, until the beginning of ''SIN'' when their rivalry comes to a boil. They were already rivals in ''ZERO'', but they remained really good friends. Lampshaded at the final episode of ''SIN'' when he sees Kaga with his new haircut and saying that it's not the Kaga he knew.
** He also has this type of relationship with Ohtomo in the TV series.
* HotBlooded: Albeit a more toned down version of the trope. Being a {{Determinator}} also helps.
* ImprobableAge: Not only he makes his racing debut at age 14, [[spoiler:he is the championship in that age as well in his debut.]] Subverted, as in the beginning, he had almost no driving skill.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: He's made friends with both drivers and his teammates who are often older than him, ranging from Shinjyo (17) to Kurumada (47).
* InvincibleHero: Only badly adjusted machines slow him down by ''SIN,'' yet he gives Kaga one hell of a trouble. Plays even straighter in the [=PS1=] game [[spoiler: where Seiichiro only beats him at the last second, blowing up his machine in the process.]]
* JerkassBall: In ''SAGA'', when he tries to get out of his slump after being beaten by other drivers, which causes problems with others, including Asuka. He regains his original personality towards the end of episode 4.
* KirkSummation: To Henri in [=EP=] 7 of ''Zero'', he talks to Henri, and then asks him what he's racing for.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: As he and Asuka grew up together and she being a big sister to him, their relationship is first seen as this.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: At first, he doesn't know why his father didn't contact him. [[spoiler:Then his mother tells him the truth about what really happened...]]
* MagneticHero: He earns the respect of other racers, throughout the series. He [[AllThereInTheManual even lists his specialty]] as "Making friends with anyone".
* MyHeroZero: He uses the Zero Zone, His first attempt resulted in [[spoiler:him being nearly killed, and retiring for a short time, but then he came back to overcome his fear of using the skill with help from Asuka.]] And in the last 2 [=OVA=]s, he drives the v-Asurada AKF-0.
* NaiveNewcomer: At the beginning of the TV series, since he has no experience in car racing.
* NiceGuy: Most of the time, he is friendly and helpful.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His all-out racing style, personality and determination resembles that of Ayrton Senna and Gilles Villeneuve.
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: His accident in the first episode of ''ZERO''. The TV series also has it. [[spoiler: After he got a HeroicBSOD, he pulled a NitroBoost and the GSX crashed into the trees, tearing the whole machine apart. The driver cockpit's still all right, and he wasn't physically hurt that much.]]
* OfficialCouple: Asuka and him, which ends in marriage at the end of the series.
* PowerStrainBlackout: In the TV series, he nearly collapses in the final lap of the last race from the pressure of the g-forces.
* RedBaron: "[[UsefulNotes/MinamotoNoYoshitsune Ushiwakamaru]]", "The Young Emperor of the Circuit"
* RedOniBlueOni: He and Kaga, with Hayato as the red and Kaga as the blue.
* TheRival: To Shinjyo and later Randoll, Osamu and eventually Kaga.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The sensitive guy to Shinjyo's manly man. He and Ohtomo plays the sensitive guys to Shinjyo's manly man.
* ShonenHair: It gets slightly bigger in the last 2 [=OVAs=].
* SuperMode: The Zero Realm, in which he enters a zen-like state once he gets a hold of it.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: The performer to Randoll and Shinjyo's technicians.
* TenMinuteRetirement: In the TV series, he runs away from his team after the disastrous first race in the American Grand Prix and in ''ZERO'' after the accident and when he is haunted by the Zero Realm.
* ThinkNothingOfIt: In episode 25 of the TV series, he said that he just trusted in Asurada in a reception when talked about him saving Asuka, Osamu and everyone else in a plane when the plane couldn't lower the wheel.
* TookALevelInBadass: Once he learns more of his driving skills, he becomes a full-fledged racer.
* UnskilledButStrong: He's less experienced in auto racing than most of his colleagues, yet he performs brilliantly in races, sometimes winning them through determination.
* VomitDiscretionShot: In episode 3 of ''Double One'', after he drove recklessly on the test track as he's put into Asuka's arms and then he fell down as he threw up.
* WhatTheHellHero: He finds himself at the receiving end of this a few times, especially in EP 12 of the TV series.

[[folder:Asuka Sugo]]

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KotonoMitsuishi

[[quoteright:230:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asuka_sugo6_1212.jpg]]

Hayato's childhood friend, she is the daughter of Kojiro Sugo, the president of Sugo Corporation and former CF racer. She serves as the team's acting manager and race queen. And while their relationship is initially like that of siblings, they eventually fall in love and she later became his fiancée in ''Zero''. At the end of ''Zero'', she goes to Columbia University to study to become a doctor so she can help Hayato and others when they are in need.

For many times, she has been Hayato's main emotional support, which helps him to win in some situations, but at the same time, she is worried about his safety, as racing is a very dangerous profession. In ''11'', she is very concerned for Hayato and her brother.

----
* BigNo: She lets one out in the first episode of ''Zero'' when she saw Hayato lying down on the ground, with his car Asurada totally wrecked after it crashed down when it went off the track banking at the fifth race in the English Grand Prix.
* BigSisterInstinct: To Hayato in some ways, for most of the TV series. In one episode, she calls Randoll out for insulting Hayato when they first met.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The brunette to Clair's blonde and Miki's redhead.

* DrivesLikeCrazy: As seen in episode 7 of ''ZERO'', she couldn't get her eyes focused on the road.
* DubNameChange: In the Korean dub, she is named Seong Yu-ra.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: This happens to her in episode 5 of ''Zero''. Her hair grew a bit longer in ''Saga'' and ''Sin''. [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Asuka_Sugo_3436.jpg This image]] shows side by side comparisons of her by 7 years. Notice the change in the art style as well.
* FamilyBusiness: The Sugos own the eponymous automotive company.
* GenkiGirl: In the TV series and first 2 [=OVA=]s, she appears to be cheerful and at times cheer for Hayato in the TV series.
* GirlinessUpgrade: In the TV series, she was a {{Tsundere}}[=-ish=] girl, but she begins to wear more dresses and looks more woman-like in the OVAS. In particular, during ''ZERO'' she cuts her hair and starts wearing earrings and lipstick.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: She gives this to Hayato in [=EP=] 35 of the TV series after he gets hysterical over trying to destroy Asurada for causing his friend Johji to be injured and retire from Cyber Formula.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:With Hayato at the end of ''SIN''.]]
* HospitalHottie: A medical student at [[IvyLeagueForEveryone Columbia University]]. In fact, she identifies the name of the medicine which Phill takes to supress the responses of Al-Zard's high speed.
* LethalChef: She once made parsley and durian juice for Hayato and when he doesn't want it, she drank it instead and she fainted. In the 2nd radio drama cassette, she cooked and made some food for Hayato's birthday party. This time, Hayato ate the food anyway and [[MasochistsMeal the cooking was so bad]] that he collapsed and ''was sent to the hospital''.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: What she and Hayato's relationship initially is, since they grew up together
* LongHairIsFeminine: In the first 3 series, she has hair that reaches her waist.
* MementoMacGuffin: Her pendant, which has a photo of her brother, [[spoiler:and the photo also serves as a clue on the identity of Shoemach.]] That pendant later has a photo of her, Hayato and Osamu. In ''Double-One'', however, she threw her pendant at Osamu after he defeated Hayato in the English race. Hayato later gave it back to her at the end.
* NiceGirl: When not in tsun-tsun mode (in the TV series), she is a really kind and gentle girl in general.
* OfficialCouple: Hayato and her. She marries him at the end of ''SIN''.
* PitGirls: She was one at the beginning of the series as well as a general agent of the Sugo Team, until her role is filled by Megumi and Satsuki.

* TakeBackYourGift: In the aforementioned event above about him breaking his promise not to race again. They make it up later.

* TenderTears: Due to her caring nature and concern for others, she sheds these more than once.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The girly girl (with Clair) to Miki's tomboy.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type Sweet, with heavy emphasis on the "dere". Sweet, kind and caring unless someone/something gets her angry. It's completely toned down in the [=OVAs=], however.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Henri Claytor]]

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/HiroYuki

[[quoteright:229:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/henri_5832.jpg]]

Originally a rookie in the Theodolite T.T. team, Henri later joins Sugo Asurada in the following year, replacing Hayato while he was recuperating from his injuries. He keeps a sweet and cheerful personality in front of the racers, which is a merely a facade of his scheming and manipulative self. For some reason, he has a deep hatred for Hayato, but Hayato doesn't know why he hates him so much...

----
* ArchEnemy: Of Hayato in ''Zero'' (albeit one-sided), Leon in the last 2 [=OVA=]s.
* BigEater: In episode 3 of SAGA only.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In ''Zero'', he may looked like a sweet and cheerful rookie, but he's actually a vengeful person who wanted to make Hayato's (and the other racers') lives miserable.
* CuteAndPsycho: He may look cute and innocent, but has a homicidal obsession with Hayato. It mellows out at the end of Zero.
* DudeLooksLikeaLady: He was mistaken for a girl first.
* FrenchJerk: An extreme version in ''Zero'', although he isn't arrogant. He becomes less of a jerk in the final 2 [=OVAs=] although he still ''is'' somewhat a jerk.
* FreudianExcuse: Probably the reason he holds a big grudge against Hayato in most of ''Zero'': He was pushed by his father to be the best in racing ever since he was little so he can be the youngest champion in the history of Cyber Formula, but when [[spoiler:Hayato got that title first, his father started drinking and then abandoned him.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: In ''Zero''. Highlighted in episode 5 when he used Shinjyo, Heinel and Gudelhian to make ''them'' believe that Hayato was using reckless racing tactics to get ahead.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His gentlemanly behavior mixed with his aggressive driving style is a mixture of Elio de Angelis and Jean Alesi.
* ParentalAbandonment: His mother passed away when he was little, and his father [[spoiler:started to ignore him and hitting the bottle after Hayato takes the title of being the youngest champion ever instead of him.]] Thus begins his obsession with ruining Hayato's life for taking his dream away.
* SportsDad: His father pushes Henri to be the best in racing and then [[spoiler:ignored him after Hayato wins his first championship.]] It helps that he's a former racer.
* SweetTooth: According to his profile he loves sweets and cupcakes a lot.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: In a flashback he is seen as a happy child who wants to please his father. Then Hayato's championship left him embittered towards Hayato.
* WellDoneSonGuy: He tries hard to impress his father. It doesn't work out ''at all''.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: It gets toned down in the last 2 [=OVAs=].
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Is fond of doing this to get his way, which is more apparent in episode 5 of ''ZERO'', but it fails in the end.
[[/folder]]

When he was young, he saw Hayato's first World Championship win in the 10th GP finals. Amazed by Hayato's racing skill and strong will, he aspires to be a racer himself. In 2020, he enters the Cyber Formula series as a test driver of Sugo Winners, and from there he was given the v-Asurada AKF-0, which has the same chassis as Hayato's Asurada, but it has a different Cyber System called Nemesis. 169* CoolOldGuy: A hard-working and competent team manager.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: To Miki in episode 9 of the TV series. Does this to Hayato too, ''multiple'' times, although verbally.

----
* ABNegative: Although it is not explained in-series, it is heavily implied that he has this, due to him having a special kind of blood type and played a plot point in one episode of the TV series. It is also this ''very'' kind of blood type that made him give up auto racing due to safety reasons.
