!! The Cures

[[folder:Kawada Asa (Kinou Asa, Cure Sunday)]]
-> ''"On behalf of the light, I am Cure Sunday!"''
-> ''"What is it? [[TheLittleShopThatWasntThereYesterday A store that appeared and became really popular overnight]]? Or an idol who's having her shows sabotaged?"''
Kawada Asa has just been able to move from her crumbling old school in the poor end of town to the nicer Clair Academy, with her mother's hopes that it will be better for her. She quickly becomes an outcast thanks to her unapologetic confidence and her interest in shows that are supposed to be for boys half her age, and she does notice and feels bad about it. It doesn't stop her from dreaming of being just like [=DaiFighter=], and though becoming a Cure wasn't ''quite'' what she wanted, she quickly decides that it'll do.
---
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Asa was never very well liked because of her obsession with Tokusatsu hero shows. Thankfully, she still has Hoshi and gains new friends once she transfers to Clair Academy.
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
%%* DisappearedDad
%%* GenkiGirl
%%* HeroicResolve: Inspired by [=DaiFighter=], naturally.
* IAmWhatIAm: It's one of the major themes of the story, and she's the first to accept it, although even she has her moments of doubt [see episodes 2 and 13].
* InnocentBlueEyes: Innocent? Heroic? You bet.
* LonelyRichKid: Twisted. Asa fits the stereotype -- her mother's always working, she's alone in the apartment a lot, and she doesn't have many friends in the beginning -- and she even has blue hair like the canon Lonely Rich Kids. One thing, though: she's poor as dirt instead.
%%* ModestyShorts: It ''is'' a ''Precure'' fic.
* NewTransferStudent: She came into the class a few weeks before the story begins.
%%* RealityIsUnrealistic: Asa tends to think this way...
%%* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nakayama Yoko (Cure Night)]]
-> ''"In the name of the shadows, I am Cure Night!"''
-> ''"You [[MonsterOfTheWeek monsters]] don't have '''any''' respect for the library! First of all, you made too much noise! Even normal levels of noise aren't acceptable in here! Nobody needs to hear 'hidoiiiiiiinaaaaaaa' when they're trying to study! What if someone had entrance exams? What then?"''
Ice Queen Nakayama, as Yoko's classmates call her, doesn't mean to come off so standoffish or scary. At her core, she's just afraid. Her family has always taught her to keep up appearances, and seeing how Asa and people like her are treated makes her reluctant to reveal her secret affinity for working on cars. She can't understand Asa one bit, but thaws to her as time goes on.
----
* BerserkButton: Break stuff and die
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
%%* DarkIsNotEvil
* DeathGlare: The "Ice Queen Nakayama glare"
%%* DefrostingIceQueen
* ModestyShorts: As Night, though her skirt's still longer than Sunday's
* NewTransferStudent: Though she's been around longer than Asa, she did just move to Kazahana City the same year as the story begins
%%* OhCrap: Twice in episode 11
%%* SiblingYinYang: with her JerkJock brother
%%* WrenchWench
[[/folder]]

!! Their Allies

[[folder:Starry]]
-> ''"...We might be in trouble ~susu."''
Starry, the girls' sidekick and companion, escaped from the Garden of Days with the scattered pieces of the Moon Dial. He's very naive about the ways of the human world, and he raises a lot of questions about why things are the way they are. As much as he learns from Asa, Yoko and the world around them, they begin to learn from him and question the things he points out that they took for granted.
----
* GenerationXerox: His parents were the previous Pretty Cure's partners
%%* MagicMeteor: How he came to Earth
%%* NonHumanSidekick
%%* ThePollyanna
%%* StellarName
* VerbalTic: "~susu"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:??? ("Dawn", [[spoiler:Ogata Kirei, Akatoki Kirei, Cure Dawn)]]]]
-> ''"Well, now, what are you doing following innocent people?"''
Though her story is unfolding slowly to the Cures, the one known as Dawn is still largely a mystery. Dawn isn't even her real name, but rather, a name she used a long time ago. What we do know is that she's a mysterious middle-aged woman with red hair and a pearlescent heart necklace. She's familiar with both the Etherium and the legend of Pretty Cure, and the very act of her stepping in has caused Etherium members to hesitate enough for Night and Sunday to get the advantage. She usually takes a noncombatant role and leaves fighting to the Cures, but she sometimes wonders if this is really wise.
----
%%* ActionMom
* AdultsAreUseless: In the beginning, Dawn is seen struggling with the idea and wondering whether or not it's true. She knows she "should" leave things to Night and Sunday, but she's still doing what she can for now, despite her doubts. [[spoiler:She seems to have come to a conclusion now; in the Garden of Rings arc, the Elder sends Sunbi and Moonla to Earth, and Dawn and Dusk resume active duty.]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:Once it's revealed that she was a Cure in the past, this is assumed of her. However, when Sunbi and Moonla come back to Earth, Dawn and Dusk get their powers back.]]
%%* HappilyMarried
%%* IconicItem: Her necklace
* MysteriousWatcher: She, her husband, and her old friend/partner
%%* PinkGirlBlueBoy: Look at who she married
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler:''Cure'' Dawn, thank you very much.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:??? (Mr. Dawn, [[spoiler:Ogata Tomokazu, Devance, the Flawless Marksman)]]]]
-> ''"I knew it couldn't be over, but seeing the Etherium actually come back to this world..."''
Dawn's husband similarly takes a long time to be named in the story, and the mysteries of his past are intertwined with hers. Asa and Yoko haven't spoken too much with him, but he is most often seen discussing the movement of the Etherium with Dawn in their apartment. Like Dawn, he had a key role in the events twenty-five years prior to the story.
----
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler:Like Millusion and, after episode 18, Mekuramast, Devance also uses Reverse Form.]]
* EmoTeen: When he was younger. He seems to have grown up well-adjusted, though.
* {{Expy}}: It's been suggested that nowadays, he looks like TheSixties version of Creator/ClintEastwood, with a perfect imitation supplied by Steve Kramer. The author herself had a fairly different picture of the character, though.
%%* HappilyMarried
%%* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:In backstory]]
* KnifeThrowingAct: [[spoiler:His powers as Devance are based on this]]
%%* LoveRedeems: [[spoiler:The reason he defected]]
%%* MysteriousWatcher
%%* PinkGirlBlueBoy
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: [[spoiler:He's perfectly okay being out of the Etherium and having aged to adulthood]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kondou Hoshi]]
-> ''"What would you do without me?"''
Asa's childhood friend Hoshi is a brash, willful girl who sees fit to protect her friend from the world. On the one hand, the bullying and ostracism she sees Asa go through because she won't stop being herself gives Hoshi a good reason for this, but on the other, she feels guilty every time she tells Asa to just act normal for once for her own protection. Hoshi underestimates Asa, though, and eventually swallows her pride and joins the group of friends despite not having wanted Asa to have anything to do with Yoko, Yukari or Mia.
----
* LastNameBasis: She calls ''everyone'' by their surname, sans honourific, except for Asa.
* MuggleBestFriend: Her and Yukari, though they've actually gotten ''more'' important as the story goes on.
* PowerOfTrust: Hoshi's major development is learning this.
%%* ScreeningTheCall: She wishes she could.
%%* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:Starting halfway through the series.]]
%%* TheTeamNormal: ...well, one of three.
%%* WildHair
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Okamoto Yukari]]
-> ''"Why don't you come shopping with us, Kawada-san? More people always means more fun."''
While Hoshi is an overprotective friend, Yukari actively pushes Yoko to get out more, no matter how much she resists. She's fairly smart, a girly-girl who adores shopping, and an outgoing bundle of friendliness, which is why she's fairly popular at the beginning of the series. Though she seems like a normal person, Yukari is surprisingly insightful and very kind. Trying to help Yoko make more friends results in Yukari befriending Asa, and from then on, she works to draw people together no matter how strange or outcast they may be.
----
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In episode 15, she takes down the braid that she had until that point kept wrapped around her head.
* FirstNameBasis: As the story progresses, she starts to call Asa, Hoshi, and Mia by their first names.
%%* GenkiGirl
* MuggleBestFriend: Like Hoshi, she reverses it by keeping and actually increasing her prominence throughout the story.
%%* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:Starting halfway through the series.]]
* ShoppingMontage: Yukari shops; other people are dragged reluctantly.
%%* TheTeamNormal
%%* [[UnfazedEveryman Unfazed Everygirl]]: As opposed to Mia, who most certainly is and was fazed by all the weirdness.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ogata Mia]]
-> ''"I don't know what's going on, but no one's talking about it even if they've seen it themselves. Everyone thinks it'll all go away if they ignore it, like a little kid who's breaking things and whining so people will pay attention."''
When we first see Mia, she seems to be nothing but a VictimOfTheWeek. Terrified of being made fun of, she lashes out at Asa for trying to talk to her and insists that she wants a normal life. Then she's unfortunate enough to run into Kainatrol and is rescued by the Cures. This experience causes a major shift in her personality as she realizes that the stories people are denying are real, and she apologizes and shyly befriends Asa, Yoko and company. Mia is the odd one out of the group, maybe in more ways than one.
----
* BreakoutCharacter: Mia was supposed to be a one-episode character!
%%* DamselInDistress
%%* FallenPrincess
%%* HeelFaceTurn
* JerkassHasAPoint: Talking Asa out of a HeroicBSOD marked her HeelFaceTurn.
* LastNameBasis: Though, unlike Hoshi, who uses it to distance herself from people, Mia does it to be polite and attaches -san to everyone's surname.
%%* LethalChef
%%* MuggleBornOfMages
%%* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:Starting halfway through the series, along with Hoshi and Yukari.]]
* TheTeamNormal: Unlike Hoshi and Yukari, though, the most involvement she's had in the struggle with the Etherium, aside from offering the odd word of advice, is getting kidnapped every so often.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nakata Ami ([[spoiler:Cure Dusk)]]]]
->''"Absolutely! The two of you, fighting for justice against the terrible vandals and saboteurs who make this society corrupt and painful! It's like something out of a dream! You may go at once!"''
Ami-sensei, the Lily Class' homeroom and science teacher, is best known for being overemotional and going on tangents about nothing in particular. She considers herself an inventor and likes to share her works with the class, but sometimes what she does backfires. She gives more speeches about love and justice than Asa does, and goodness knows that's a feat.
* BadassTeacher: Don't touch her students, seriously.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She gets derailed far too often talking about love, justice and her inventions, and is rarely ever shown actually teaching class.
%%* DitzyGenius
* GadgeteerGenius: At least ''she'' considers herself one, and she occasionally complains that she doesn't get the respect and the paycheque she deserves. With some of the things she builds, maybe she's right.
%%* HomemadeInventions
%%* [[HonoraryUncle Honourary Aunt]]: to Mia.
%%* ObfuscatingStupidity: To some degree.
%%* PsychologistTeacher
* RetiredBadass: Ami-sensei is [[spoiler:Cure Dusk, as some readers guessed.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Omemi Emiru [[spoiler:(Millusion, the Vicious Whisper)]]]]
-> ''"Do we have a deal?"''
Emiru isn't your average Libby. She's a short-haired glasses-wearer who looks more like she'd be the one picked on instead. Her affinity for staying in the shadows -- up until she feels the need to remind people of the status quo -- is what gives her power over her classmates, all of whom are very aware that she knows all their secrets. It also serves as the source of a different kind of power later on...
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: An OrwellianRetcon changed her brown hair to blue-green. [[spoiler:This only provided {{Foreshadowing}} for her Etherium powers, since the mundane characters tend to have mundane hair colours, with some exceptions.]]
%%* AlphaBitch
%%* {{Anti Hero}}ine: [[spoiler:Type III, after her HeelFaceTurn]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler:Her Millusion costume post-HeelFaceTurn is black and teal]]
%%* DarkMagicalGirl
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Even after she stops being outright ''evil'', she's still not very ''nice''.
%%* FreakOut
%%* GirlPosse: And she does not want to lose them.
* TheGlassesComeOff: [[spoiler:And they turn into an Etherium eye mask!]]
* GoodIsNotNice: [[spoiler:Emiru stops bullying the protagonists and becomes an on-again-off-again ally as Millusion, but she still isn't a nice person, but rather a Type III AntiHero.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:In episode 13; remarkable, given her status as not just a social obstacle but also Etherium's resident hypnotist]]
* HowDoIShotWeb: [[spoiler:Though she seems to mostly get the hang of her powers, there are obvious flaws in her illusion world the first time she uses Trance Lock. Mekuramast muses that it's inevitable, considering her inexperience.]]
%%* KnowledgeBroker
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Half to most of the things in spoiler text related to Emiru are taken as a given in the fanwork community.
%%* MakeWayForThePrincess: Parting the crowd in episode 14.
%%* MasterOfIllusion
%%* MeaningfulName
* NotBrainwashed: [[spoiler:During her brief stint with the Etherium]]
* ScaryShinyGlasses: It's practically her defining trait, at least early on
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: [[spoiler: Her Millusion costume is a PaletteSwap of her school uniform]]
%%* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:After her HeelFaceTurn]]
%%* TraitorShot: She has a number of them in early episodes.
[[/folder]]

!! The Etherium

[[folder:Mekuramast, the Master Magician (Kairos)]]
-> ''"A magician never tells what he knows."''
The magician Mekuramast is the first Etherium miniboss to appear. It's clear that he wants the Moon Pieces badly, but other than that, his motives are questionable; he follows the Boss' orders but keeps knowledge that would help his teammates to himself. A few times, he's secretly helped the Cures out, but only when it's Kainatrol's success and reputation on the line; for reasons dating back to the world they both came from and destroyed 150 years ago, the two of them despise each other.
----
* DarkIsNotEvil: [[spoiler:He goes into Reverse Form when he decides he can't take Kainatrol's abuse anymore]]
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Thera/Kainatrol erasing Kore and then taunting him over it while erasing the Garden of Rings around him.]]
* EnemyCivilWar: He hates Kainatrol with a passion but doesn't regard the Cures with much emotion at all
%%* EnigmaticMinion
%%* FailureKnight
%%* HeelFaceTurn
%%* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty
%%* IWasJustPassingThrough
%%* MagiciansAreWizards
* PaintItBlack: [[spoiler:He gets Reverse Form in episode 18.]].
%%* StageMagician
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kainatrol, the Feared Tamer ([[spoiler:Thera)]]]]
-> ''"Well, people of Kazahana City, I'd like for you to do something for me."''
Kainatrol scares people. She tends to speak for the Boss when he doesn't feel like talking himself, and she takes it upon herself to punish the weak and take over other people's jobs if she thinks she can do them better. Eiender flips between seeing her ambition as good or bad, but it's there, and she'll do anything for the Etherium's cause. Her abilities as an animal tamer translate into MindControl, and while she doesn't have the power to brainwash the Cures, Dawn, or her fellow Etherium members, anyone else had better watch out.
----
%%* BadPowersBadPeople
%%* BecauseYouCanCope: [[spoiler:Too bad she couldn't.]]
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: She has the power to inflict this on people without powers. [[spoiler:When she uses the incomplete Moon Dial as an AmplifierArtifact, the "without powers" bit goes out the window, and only shielding your eyes will save you.]]
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:Kainatrol killed her own sister when the Etherium destroyed the world she and Mekuramast lived in.]]
%%* CircusBrat: Cruelly done quite differently from normal
* ComboPlatterPowers: Her main ability, Tamer's Chain, is MindControl, but she also has a shielding power
* DespairEventHorizon: It's mainly implied, but [[spoiler:overhearing Kairos and Kore planning to run off together -- leaving her out of the dream she'd held onto while Kore had long given up -- and leave her behind to have the Ringmaster take out his anger on her while leaving her in a dead-end life she hated.]] She did ''not'' take this well.
%%* DisproportionateRetribution...what she did to them afterward.
%%* DragonWithAnAgenda
%%* EnemyCivilWar: With Mekuramast
%%* EnigmaticMinion
* EvilCounterpart: To [[spoiler:Millusion]], especially after we learn [[spoiler:what she did to her own home world [[DisproportionateRetribution because she was passed over in favor of her sister]]]]
%%* EvilLaugh: Oh, yeah, she's got one.
%%* EvilRedhead
* FollowInMyFootsteps: She was raised with the idea, but never agreed to it.
%%* HypnoticEyes
* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty
* ImportantHaircut: Her flashback at the beginning of episode 17. Before then, she and her sister looked identical.
%%* MindControl
%%* TheResenter
%%* ScaryShinyGlasses: She does this with her eye mask a lot
%%* ShipSinking
* SmugSnake: She certainly acts like one, and, according to character polls and comment pages, she's the most hated [[strike:villain]] ''character'' in the fic
* StartOfDarkness: The Garden of Rings arc shows hers
* VillainousBreakdown: "Why didn't you just give up and ''die!?''"
* WhyWontYouDie: More like "why haven't you been DrivenToSuicide by now", but the way she delivers the line, it counts.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Binbeat, the Youthful Musician (Allegro)]]
-> ''"Hey, you losers, I'm trying to fight you!"''
Binbeat, a nine-year-old boy whose organ playing creates explosions, tends to be the series' comic relief villain. He whines, gets bored easily, and just wants to have fun, whether that means stealing panties or eating science projects. Even the Cures don't take him seriously, and Mireyes tends to be sent out after him simply because she knows how to deal with him. It seems that, though he's been in the Etherium for ninety-five years, he still doesn't understand the implication of destroying worlds, either his own or others -- though [[spoiler:his world is still around, because the Etherium was driven back from it]].
----
* AliensSpeakingEnglish: Sure, he can somehow speak Japanese, but he can't read a word of it.
* AmbiguousInnocence: Mireyes notes that Binbeat works with the Etherium because he's too young -- mentally, anyway -- to realize what erasing worlds means.
%%* BrattyHalfPint
* CircusBrat: When the Etherium was disguising itself as a circus in the Land of Tracks, Binbeat ran away with them.
%%* CuriousAsAMonkey: [[spoiler: She's not. Turns out his sister is alive and well--and she's ''Mireyes.'']]
%%* EvilDuo: the selfish half, with Mireyes
%%* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: [[spoiler:Foolish Sibling To Mireyes's Responsible Sibling.]]
%%* HavingABlast
%%* ImprobableWeaponUser: A pipe organ, at that!
* KidsAreCruel: Binbeat/Allegro and his sister were bullied mostly by the other children in town, although the adults seemed to be on board with it too and certainly weren't doing anything to stop it.
%%* LetThereBeSnow: He causes this in episode 10
%%* MagicMusic
%%* MusicalAssassin
%%* NeverGrewUp
%%* PantyThief: In his introduction
* PlaygroundSong: These were the inspiration behind making a bratty child who uses MagicMusic.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Binbeat's battle costume is a white and green PaletteSwap of the school uniform he wore 95 years ago.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mireyes, the Mystical Seer ([[spoiler:Andante)]]]]
-> ''"You're still too young to understand."''
Mireyes is an old woman who sees the future, but she's far from the weakest member of the QuirkyMinibossSquad. Responsible and bitter, she hates being called old and will only tolerate it from Binbeat. She's the only member of the Etherium who doesn't wear a mask; in fact, her eyes are completely hidden by a head covering. Her origin is unknown, but she was picked up by the Etherium after their defeat by the previous Pretty Cure, so her world is still alive.
----
%%* CombatClairvoyance
* ComboPlatterPowers: Clairvoyance and some sort of energy blast
%%* ElderlyImmortal
%%* EvilDuo: The responsible half, with Binbeat
%%* EvilOldFolks
* TheFaceless: Mireyes' eyes are always hidden behind her fortune teller's head covering. She can still see, probably because of her psychic powers.
* MagicalEyes: Impressive for someone whose eyes you don't actually get to ''see''; they [[PowerGlows glow]] behind her head covering when she uses Future Sight.
%%* NeverMessWithGranny
* OlderThanTheyLook: The Etherium picked her up late in life, so she's physically in her late seventies but a few decades older. Yes, this means she's the ''youngest'' person there, save for [[spoiler:Emiru]].
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:She goes out opposing Kainatrol's offensive]]
%%* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: [[spoiler:Responsible Sibling To Binbeat's Foolish Sibling.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tachimany, the Shifting Multitudes]]
-> ''"You always give everything such strict definitions. We're more... changeable."''
The Etherium's actors, Tachimany, are hard to classify. They're a number of different people in one body by default, but when they change forms, they also change the number of bodies they inhabit. They take great pride in their ability, as much as it annoys people like Kainatrol, and though they rarely see battle action, they're very good at tricking people and talking them around.
----
* CrossdressingVoices: In the fanmade imagine-casting, this is played straight in the Japanese version, as Creator/AkiraIshida voices both the male and female versions of Tachimany; subverted in the imagine-cast English dub, as Matt Dillon only voices the male forms, with the female forms relegated to Lisa Ortiz.
%%* DeadlyDoctor: form 4
* DeathEqualsRedemption: [[spoiler:They go out with the epiphany that Kainatrol had been using them]]
* GenderBender: Some of their forms are male, some are female, and some you just can't tell either way
* InnocentFlowerGirl: Form 7, one of their most oft-used forms
* NumerologicalMotif: The reasons behind many of their forms -- [[FourIsDeath the four-body form is a quartet of doctors]], for example.
%%* OutOfFocus: Far too often, with the writer's apologies.
%%* SelfDuplication
* ThirteenIsUnlucky: [[spoiler:it takes them using form 13 before they realized they were actually being used]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Eiender, the Ruler of Time (The Boss)]]
-> ''"Luring out Pretty Cure and determining their strength is all well and good, but we need to focus first on the objective at hand: obtaining the thirteen Moon Pieces."''
This guy is... who? The Boss of the Etherium never even uses his own name. He takes form as a ripple in the air if he must show himself to exist, but otherwise, you usually don't even know if he's there. He doesn't seem to define himself very much at all. Of course, it could be that he prefers it that way...
----
* DimensionLord: The role of the Boss was originally intended to be this, and Eiender still shows tendencies of it from time to time, though he's changed his focus from "destroy everything and rule it all" to just "destroy everything".
%%* DiscOneFinalBoss
* GenericDoomsdayVillain: He presents himself as a flat character on ''purpose''.
%%* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen

* MyDeathIsJustTheBeginning: [[spoiler:"Destroy everything" includes himself, and his plan is to phase himself out of existence when he thinks that his followers can continue the job on their own. Kainatrol has her own plans, though.]]
* OmnicidalManiac: He does what he does because he believes nothing and nobody has the right to exist.
%%* ShadowDictator
[[/folder]]
