-> Voiced by: Creator/KaeAraki (Japanese, TV series), Creator/NorikoHidaka (Japanese, radio dramas), Creator/BridgetHoffman (English, as "Ruby Marlowe")
----

* AllLovingHero: This young woman loves near everyone and is immensely forgiving.
* AssKicksYou: Her hip attack in the first episode.
* AttemptedRape: Frequently a victim of this as rape is supposed to neutralize her priestess powers.
* BadassAdorable: Book dumb and irresponsibly goofy but also sweet and loyal and definitely kicks ass when she's serious.
* BigEater: One of the most emblematic female examples. It should be noted that, by WordOfGod, she's supposed to be pudgy.
* BookDumb: Subverted: she's shown as more or less average in grades and works hard to get good ones [[spoiler: and manages to get in a quite prestigious high school]].
* ClothingDamage: Whenever she is attacked, sometimes reducing her clothes to rags clinging to her underwear (which always stays miraculously intact).
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Displayed when she successfully saves her six bodyguards from Soi's lightning attack.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Brown eyes and brown hair. Although granted, Miaka's eyes are more hazel than truly brown.
* DamselInDistress: Often runs into dangerous situations and needs to be saved.
* DamselOutOfDistress: Played with. In the first episode she doesn't hesitate to headbutt or pile drive thugs that accost her but she can't hit them hard enough to make them stay down. This means she still needs rescuing. On another occasion, she was trapped in a pocket dimension while a demon used her body to make trouble for her guardians. [[spoiler: She badly injured herself to wound the imposter and escape but then she needed a blood transfusion.]]
* TheDitz: She's not the brightest bulb out there.
* DrivenToSuicide: She attempts suicide on more than one occasion.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She starts wearing her hair down as she matured.
* GoodBadGirl: Miaka is prevented from being promiscuous in practice due to VirginPower, but it isn't for lack of desire. She and Tamahome are equally frustrated that they can't have sex, and she definitely notices Hotohori and Nakago's good looks. [[spoiler:She also decides to try to seduce Nakago to retrieve the shinzaho, albeit she has second thoughts and backs out; and later when she's in Tomo's illusion, she's interested in sex with the handsome illusion Tomo presents to her]]. All in all, Miaka's desire for sex is portrayed as completely natural and in no way conflicting with her innate kindness or heroism.
%%* GoodSamaritan
* GuiltComplex: Attributed to seeing her mother sad following a divorce. It only gets worse when she's the Priestess.
* HollywoodPudgy: In-universe, she is called fat, but she's got a quite full figure compared with other anime girls.
* IdiotHero: Good grades or not, Miaka ''severely'' lacks common sense and doesn't think things through.
* KneelBeforeFrodo: Is on the receiving end of this when she agrees to be the Priestess.
* LethalChef: Her cooking is '''horrible'''.
* TheLoad: Miaka frequently runs off alone into danger, despite having seven superpowered individuals sworn to protect her. In some cases she even tricks them ''out'' of helping or protecting her, which invariably makes the situation worse when they do have to intervene. The entire kodoku arc is the result of Miaka doing this, and it results in Tamahome becoming BrainwashedAndCrazy, Tasuki nearly dying via NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, and Chichiri and Hotohori in danger of being killed as well. The Suzaku warriors have no choice but to protect Miaka regardless of her reckless actions as she is the only person who can summon their god. With that said, part of Miaka's CharacterDevelopment is becoming aware of her own dumb and reckless actions and trying to do better, although for most of the series the results are... mixed.
* LoveDodecahedron: She's pretty much the center of it.
%%* MartyrWithoutACause
* {{Miko}}: Technically, as she's the Priestess of Suzaku. Subverted as she rarely wears miko attire nor does she act like a typical one.
* MisappliedPhlebotinum: She wastes Tasuki's spell cards to make snacks [[spoiler:(and [[TearJerker Tamahome]])]]. To be fair, she wasn't aware of the limits of said spell card's magic.
%%* NaiveEverygirl
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: [[spoiler:Due to being back in her own world at the time, she's not present during Mitsukake's death.]]
* {{Nice Girl}}: Despite having flaws, Miaka is a kind-hearted girl who forgives mostly everyone who wronged her and she is shown to put her friends and others before herself when she summoned Suzaku.
* ObsessedWithFood: To the point where she literally can't control herself around food, and daydreams about it frequently. The bad guys (and Taiitsukun) take advantage of this more than once!
* OdangoHair: Miaka's hair is mostly styled in twin buns.
* OfficialCouple: With Tamahome.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: Until she was sucked into the book of TheFourGods, that is.
* ThePlan: In the 3rd OVA, [[spoiler:it turns out she gave her unborn child to a girl who would use her strong feelings for Tamahome to save the Universe of the Four Gods, which was falling apart as the book became old and worn. Nothing is what it seems, and it was something Miaka did subconsciously. ItMakesSenseInContext.]]
* ThePowerOfFriendship and ThePowerOfLove: While both are important (and critical to winning against the bad guys), this interestingly becomes a central conflict for Miaka during the main series, as she deeply loves Tamahome, but also knows that this is driving a deeper and deeper wedge between herself and Yui.
* PutOnABus: In ''Eikoden'', Miaka enters a ConvenientComa while Mayo causes havoc in her place as the priestess of Suzaku.
* RedOniBlueOni: Miaka is the red oni to Yui's blue.
* SayMyName: '''Tamahome!!!'''
* StockShoujoHeroine: She's a gluttonous {{Idiot Hero}}ine with average grades who is nonetheless well-meaning and kindhearted. She accidentally finds herself in the middle of a fantastic war and gets two handsome love interests out of the deal.
* SupportingProtagonist: She's the BigGood for Konan as the Suzaku priestess, but her seven star warriors are the ones who usually save the day.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: Probably Miaka's main legitimate strength is her ability to appeal to the better nature and compassion of others. Nuriko, Tasuki and Mitsukake are all antagonistic or outright hostile when Miaka first meets them, and she manages to win over all three. This skill culminates with [[spoiler:her ''finally'' breaking through to Yui in the final episodes, causing the latter to turn against Nakago.]]
* TeenPregnancy: Downplayed example: she is 18 years old in the Eikoden OVA, and married to Taka when she becomes pregnant.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type B, towards Tamahome.
* TooDumbToLive: Though Miaka doesn't actually die in this series, that is not due to lack of effort on her part. Time and time again, she runs headfirst into danger alone, despite not having any magic or combat skills, and despite having 7 guardians whose sole purpose for existing is to protect her. She survives only because of the Suzaku seven wage a vigorous battle with Darwinism to keep her alive and the fact that most the enemies just want to kidnap her instead of kill her.
* VirginityMakesYouStupid: Miaka is a virgin, and she's more than a little slow.
* VirginPower: Her virginity is what allows her to keep her priestess powers.
* WellDoneSonGuy: In the manga, she constantly tries to get the approval of her well-intentioned but ''very'' exigent EducationMama.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatHotness: Miaka is told that she gets ThreeWishes as the Priestess of Suzaku, and that she can use them for anything she wants. She thinks about the possibilities, and one of them is becoming [[HollywoodPudgy thinner]] and [[GenericCuteness prettier]] and more popular with boys at school. Her decisions as to what to wish for [[ComingOfAge evolve over the course of the series]] from entirely selfish, to a combination of selfish and selfless, to entirely selfless...and [[spoiler: even though she gets three wishes, she only actually uses ''two''.]]
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Shown doing a Jumping Hip Attack and a German Suplex to certain creeps.
%%* YourUniverseOrMine

----

* AdaptationalJerkass: She wasn't that bitchy in the manga.
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler: Type II and III]]
%%* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:In the OVA.]]
* AttemptedRape: Yui is immediately attacked by two men as soon as she enters the book, which sets the stage for much of the ensuing drama. Though, it was found out Nakago saved her before any real damage could occur.
%%* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:After Miaka uses her first wish to rescue her from Seiryuu]].
* BoyishShortHair: She cut her hair this way in order to keep boys from bothering her.
%%* ClothingDamage: When she gains Seiryuu's divine power.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: She turned against Miaka after she heard her confession that Tamahome was the reason why she return inside the book
* CuteBookworm: Sensible and studious, she cut her hair short in an effort to get boys to stop chasing her.
* DefiledForever: Part of what drives her bad actions is her belief that this applies to her. [[spoiler:Ultimately, however, Yui is a complete aversion. She makes a HeelFaceTurn, [[RedemptionEqualsLife survives]], and goes on to have a healthy friendship with Miaka and a steady relationship with Tetsuya.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: She slashes her wrist after she found out that she was raped. [[InterruptedSuicide Nakago stops her before she could do ''too'' much damage to herself beyond leaving a scar on her wrist]].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Even at her absolute worst, Yui forbids Nakago and Suboshi from killing Miaka. [[JustGivingOrders Not that it stops Nakago from outsourcing the job to other Seiryuu lieutenants.]]
%%* EvilCounterpart: [[spoiler:To Miaka.]]
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:Though she pulls a HeelFaceTurn in the end.]]
* FaceHeelRevolvingDoor: [[spoiler:From Heel as a RivalTurnedEvil to Face to BrainwashedAndCrazy Priestess of Seiryuu to solid Face again.]]
* FanservicePack: Starts acting and looking more HotterAndSexier once she became the Seiryuu priestess.
* FantasyKeepsake: A grim version of this trope. [[spoiler: Yui keeps the earring Nakago gave her, ''not'' out of any affection or love for him, but because it serves as a reminder of how close she came to giving in to the darkest parts of herself.]]
* {{Gaslighting}}: Yui is a '''major''' victim of this at the hands of Nakago, who [[spoiler:spent ''three months'' convincing Yui she was violently gang-raped and that Miaka had purposely abandoned her to that fate.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Despite having her own bodyguard admirer in the form of Suboshi, Yui actually yearns for Tamahome, one of the Suzaku ''and'' Miaka's main LoveInterest. This only causes Yui to resent Miaka even more.
* ImmodestOrgasm: Appears to have one when Seiryuu (in human form) [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything enters her heart]].
* ImportantHaircut: Cut her hair short in 8th grade so that boys would stop bothering her.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Over-confident outside but underneath she longs for someone to take care of her.
%%* LongHairIsFeminine: In the OVA.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:Being a {{Yandere}} towards Miaka and Tamahome counts as this.]]
* MustMakeAmends: [[spoiler:Successfully does this with her final wish, partly because the wish practically killed her. Miaka saves the day, of course.]]
* NerdsAreSexy: An exceptional student desired by many boys. It's the reason for her ImportantHaircut above.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: The only Seiryuu warrior death she witnessed was Soi's.
%%* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: Like Miaka, she was this until she was sucked into the book of TheFourGods.
* ParentsAsPeople: Though her parents ''do'' care for her, they're shown only once. In the anime, her father doesn't even show up.
* PetTheDog: Yui is genuinely compassionate to Suboshi when the latter is in grief over his brother's death.
* PowerHair: Cut her hair short in 8th grade so that boys would stop bothering her. She lets it grow out again in high school.
%%* RedOniBlueOni: Blue, with Miaka as the red.
* RedemptionEqualsLife: [[spoiler: She is revived in the end, after a RedemptionEqualsDeath moment.]]
%%* RevengeBeforeReason
* RivalTurnedEvil: After her own trip inside the book ends in [[AttemptedRape less than ideal results]], Nakago exploits Yui's emotionally vulnerable state by [[ManipulativeBastard manipulating]] her into blaming Miaka for her misfortunes. Thus begins Yui's growing hatred of her former best friend and eventual rise as the Seiryuu priestess. Thankfully, she later [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone sees the error of her ways before]] it's all too late.
* TookALevelInJerkass: [[spoiler:Siding with Nakago against Miaka is this one, but the LaserGuidedKarma she receives brings her back to her senses.]]
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:After rescuing her from an AttemptedRape, Nakago took advantage of her vulnerable state for his end goal.]]
%%* VirginSacrifice
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Unlike Miaka who wholeheartedly dives into the fantasy, Yui throws it in Tamahome's face that he's "just a character in a book." The belief that she is interacting with fictional characters (save for Miaka) would explain a ''lot'' of her seeming indifference to some of the nastier events Team Seiryuu is responsible for.
* {{Yandere}}: [[spoiler:She is obsessive over both Tamahome ''and'' Miaka.]]

A Japanese schoolgirl from the 1920s, who became the Priestess of Genbu.
----
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Of the ''Manga/FushigiYuugiGenbuKaiden'' prequel.
* HiddenEyes: As seen in the ''only'' picture of her shown in the original ''Fushigi Yuugi'', which is posted above.
* KimonoIsTraditional: More exactly, she wears a ''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakama#Women.27s_hakama hakama]]''. JustifiedTrope: not only she's Japanese but she lived during [[UsefulNotes/ImperialJapan the Taishou Era]] (TheRoaringTwenties), when girls wore ''hakama'' as school uniforms and the SailorFuku had just been implemented as such.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Traditionally-dressed young woman, wearing her hair really long.
* OffingTheOffspring: [[spoiler: Keisuke finds out thanks to his research that she was at the receiving end of this, when her father Einosuke realised that her illness was caused by ''Genbu devouring her from the inside'' as a consequence of being a Miko. He then went the MurderSuicide way.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: She lived and died almost 70 years before the story began.

Another Japanese schoolgirl from the 1930s, who became the Priestess of Byakko.
----
* BigFancyHouse: She lived in an old Japanese home with her caretaker, Toki.
* GirlishPigtails: Had long hair and kept it in twin braids.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Of the ''Manga/FushigiYuugiByakkoSenki'' prequel.
* PluckyGirl: This girl survived her Miko trials ''without'' suffering the downside of [[spoiler: being devoured by the God from the inside]]. Also, in the anime [[spoiler: as an old woman, Suzuno pretty much kept herself alive ''out of pure sheer willpower'' while attended by Tetsuya, Keisuke and her family, refusing to die until she and Tatara could be reunited [[SnowMeansDeath as the snow fell on them]].]]
* SailorFuku: As a youngster, she was shown wearing a blue one. Again, a JustifiedTrope: she went to highschool few after the ''seifuku'' replaced the ''hakama'' as the average uniform for girls.
* StarCrossedLovers: With Tatara, one of her Seishi. [[spoiler: In the anime, they ended up TogetherInDeath.]]
* YamatoNadeshiko: A miko with an iron clad spine, and lives in a traditional Japanese home. In one of the Watase illustrations, she's seen wearing a [[KimonoIsTraditional kimono]] alongside the other girls.

Miaka's older brother.
----
* BigBrotherBully: Of the [[FunPersonified fun]] type towards his sister, Miaka. He would be slightly mischievous and pull jokes that would scare/annoy the heck out of his sister.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He loves his little sister Miaka and will do anything to help her.
* [[DramaQueen Drama King]]: Due to his sister being sucked into ''The Universe'' and is consistently on the "[[BigBrotherInstinct read]]," he's shown to dose himself with all the drama that played out much too seriously. From [[OcularGushers over-the-top weeping]], to [[WingdingEyes sparkly eyes]], he's shown them all.
%%* HotLibrarian
* StupidSexyFlanders: He's quite fond of Tamahome, and gushes over Tamahome when he first met him. But he pulls this mainly as one, to grab Tamahome's attention, two, cover Miaka's fear of letting Tamahome know that Tamahome himself might be a fictional character, and three, Keisuke is simply hyped to actually witness a "supposedly fictional character" being real.
* UnfazedEveryman: He handles all the craziness around with surprising aplom...until all craziness appeared in ''his'' world.

!!'''Tetsuya Kajiwara'''
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20_02.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KenNarita (Japanese, mainly), Nobuyuki Furuta (Japanese, ep. 8 only), Creator/KirkBaily (English, as "Bo" and "Paul Williams")

Keisuke's friend and classmate. He's in on Miaka and Yui being absorbed into ''The Universe of the Four Gods'', and is committed in aiding Keisuke solve the mystery behind it.
----
* BeautifulAllAlong: Underneath that goofy personality and [[SunglassesAtNight beloved sunglasses]], he's a very handsome-looking man.
* BrutalHonesty - DeadpanSnarker: Doesn't have much of a brain-to-mouth filter.
* CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds: Yui and Tetsuya eventually get together, although their relationship is humorously one-sided on Tetsuya's part.
* ThoseTwoGuys: With Keisuke.
* SunglassesAtNight: Outdoors, indoors, day and night, he just can’t go about his day without donning his sunglasses.

!!'''Mrs. Yuuki'''
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/21_02.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/MisaWatanabe (Japanese), Creator/MonaMarshall (English, mainly), Creator/DorothyEliasFahn (English, ep. 2 only, as "Dorothy Melendrez"), Diana Perkins (English, ep. 26 only, as "Diane Perkins")

Miaka and Keisuke's mother.
----
* DefrostingIceQueen: Does care for her two kids, but after having to raise them alone for years, she's become quite embittered and over-exigent.
* EducationMama: Constantly pressures Miaka to do well in school, and to take the entrance exams to get into the prestigious Jonan High School.
* NoNameGiven: We don't know her real name
* ParentsAsPeople: As said above, she does love her children but in her desire to do her best, she can be self-righteous and arrogant.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Is not seen at Miaka's wedding in the Eikoden OVA, or at the birth of her grandchild. It's implied that [[IHaveNoSon she no longer has contact with Miaka]].
[[/folder]]

-> Voiced by: Katsuya Shiga (Japanese), Jeff Nimoy (English, credited as "Josh Zorenson" and "Gregory Kuhn")

The caretaker of Suzuno throughout her last years. After Suzuno's passing, he aids Keisuke and Tetsuya in researching Suzuno's belongings for further insights regarding ''The Universe of the Four Gods,'' which eventually, found the key letter written to [[Manga/FushigiYuugiByakkoSenki Takao Osugi]] from [[Manga/FushigiYuugiGenbuKaiden Einosuke Okuda.]] His relationship with Suzuno as of the anime is unclear, but he seems to know her since his childhood.
----
* AllThereInTheScript: His name [[NoNameGiven was never mentioned]] within the anime, and was only until the credits rolled in that we learned of his name. He is finally called by name in the first OVA.
* TheCaretaker: He's implied to be this for Suzuno throughout her last years.
* CassandraTruth: He never believed Suzuno's claims about ''The Universe of the Four Gods'' until he's called to meet with Keisuke and Tetsuya.

!!'''Tamahome'''
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/03_4.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/HikaruMidorikawa, Creator/MotokoKumai [Young] (Japanese), Creator/ToshihikoSeki (Japanese, CD dramas), Creator/MamoruMiyano (Japanese, ''Suzaku Ibun'' game), Creator/DavidHayter (English, as "Sean Barker"; most media), Creator/DaveWittenberg (English, as "Dave Lelyveld"; Eikoden)
----
* AccidentalPervert: He often accidentally catches Miaka topless and naked. Not only accidentally looking at, but also groping her.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Was bullied by other kids because of his FacialMarkings.
* BadassLongcoat: [[spoiler:His final showdown with Suboshi happened in the real world, while Tamahome is wearing modern clothes including this one.]]
* BelatedLoveEpiphany: In episode 10, after he saves Miaka from an attacking tiger and [[AngerBornOfworry scolds her out of worry]], she ditches his concern. Instead of firing her back, he hugs her while confessing that he has been missing her as well as realized to have fallen in love with her while she was gone (back to her world) for 3 months.
* BerserkButton: If you don't want to risk being kicked into the sky, do ''not'' call him "Obake-chan". Or threaten Miaka/harm or [[spoiler:kill]] his family.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He loves all his siblings and was pissed as fuck when [[spoiler:Suboshi killed them along with their father]].
* BishieSparkle: He does this the most often...
* BodyguardCrush: On Miaka.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: When he's drugged on Kodoku from episode 19 to 22.
* ChickMagnet: Loved by Miaka. Desired by Yui ''and'' Mayo.
* ClothesMakeTheManiac: The earring was part of the Kodoku spell.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: [[spoiler: Midway through the series, his family gets slaughtered. This conveniently removes any reason for him to stay in his world instead of going to the real one to live with Miaka.]]
* CountryMouse: Lives in a poor village, works many jobs to provide for his family. [[spoiler: As Taka, he's a youth from the Japanese countryside who studies and works in Tokyo.]]
* TheDutifulSon: To his sickly father and four younger siblings. Part of Tamahome's seeming coldness and greed in early episodes is actually the result of him prioritizing support for his family over everything else.
* EmbarrassingNickname: In his childhood he was mocked with the nickname "obake-chan," owing to the mark on his forehead. [[VitriolicBestBuds Tasuki]] jumps all over this the instant he finds out.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Object of Nakago's obsession. Vitriolic Best Friend with HoYay hints to Tasuki. Nuriko ''loved'' to tease him and once kissed him. [[spoiler:Keisuke fawns over him quite a few times when he's at the real world.]]
* EvilCostumeSwitch
* FacialMarkings: His Suzaku mark is located on his forehead.
* FightsLikeANormal: While Tamahome has a SuperMode, he's always been a martial-artist and fights as such. Once Taiitskun grants him his MidSeasonUpgrade, Tamahome's new KiManipulation ability allows him to perform SupernaturalMartialArts.
* FishOutOfWater: [[spoiler:He was transported to the real (modernized) world along with Miaka near the end of the story.]]
* TheHero: With Miaka being the SupportingProtagonist, Tamahome does most of the heavy lifting even amongst the Suzaku warriors.
* HeroicBSOD:
** When he loses [[spoiler: his whole family]]. Complete with BerserkerTears and him being THIS close to cross the DespairEventHorizon.
** PlayedForLaughs earlier, when Miaka returns from the real world for the first time. Nuriko tells that Tamahome went into a milder case of this due to depression, showing it in small details--like chewing on an empty dish and not noticing until Nuriko points that out.
* InformedFlaw: He is supposedly greedy and money-hungry, but is later shown to protect villages in exchange for a bare minimum amount of money (and on top of that, is not doing it out of personal greed, but to support his impoverished family).
* JackOfAllStats: He's strong, but not as strong as Nuriko; fast, but not as fast as Tasuki; can use ki attacks, but isn't as skilled with ki/magic as Chichiri. Nevertheless he's probably the best all-around fighter on the Suzaku team.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: When he first met Miaka, he rudely asks her for money because he had to feed his family without her knowing until, she met them and they have few arguments but they love each other.
* KiManipulation: Once Taiitskun uogrades his SuperMode, Tamahome can now do ki blasts like Nakago and even has a BattleAura.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He was introduced wearing a ponytail. It was chopped off by Suboshi's KillerYoyo during their fight [[spoiler:after he killed Tamahome's family]].
* ManlyTears: Upon losing his family and later Nuriko.
* MissingMom: His mother died when he was very young.
* MoneyFetish: When first introduced, Tamahome is obsessed with money to seemingly jerkish levels. This tendency [[CharacterizationMarchesOn mostly vanishes]] after [[spoiler:his family is killed, whom he was desperately trying to provide for.]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye:
** [[spoiler:To his family except his youngest sister, who immediately dies upon seeing him.]]
** [[spoiler:For his fellow Suzaku Warriors, he was absent in Mitsukake and Hotohori's deaths due to being in Miaka's world at the time.]]
* NiceGuy: He loves his family much and grows to love Miaka and treat her decently despite their arguments, he's even more nicer when he was reincarnated in the real universe as 'Taka'.

* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When witnessing his entire family are slaughtered by Suboshi.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: A ''very'' egregious example of this trope. After [[spoiler: Suboshi kills his family]], his entire character can basically be summed up as "Miaka's boyfriend" and very little else. He even says he was "created solely to love her."
* SayMyName: And ''how''...
* SuperMode: Tamahome's celestial powers enhances his battle stats, but he more or less still FightsLikeANormal. Taiitsukun's MidSeasonUpgrade to him once the real Suzaku seven assembled is more of a textbook example, as it engulfs Tamahome with a BattleAura and allows him to perform KiManipulation.
* TalkToTheFist
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: At the end of the kodoku arc, Tamahome delivers a devastatingly succinct one of these to Yui: he's genuinely sympathetic to what she endured, but her actions are still unforgivable. It crushes her.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:Tamahome discovers he's a fictional character from a book, and initially ''freaks out'' about what he really is. He ends up making peace with it.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: Tamahome accepts his own power and duty as a Suzaku Warrior after his [[spoiler: family's death]] and vows to love and [[DeclarationOfProtection protect Miaka at all costs]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Tasuki. It's even stated that after he endures [[spoiler:the horrific murder of his family]] that Tasuki's obnoxious teasing is a welcome bit of normalcy for him.

* CelibateHero: Has an entire harem, but never really makes use of it (despite pressure to pick an empress and produce an heir), [[LovingAShadow holding out for the legendary priestess]]. He eventually selects Houki, after seeing that [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy Miaka is happier with Tamahome]].
* CommutingOnABus: Hotohori remains behind to run Konan while Miaka and the other Suzaku warriors adventure off to Hokkan, occasionally checking in with Chichiri via magical communication means.
* CondescendingCompassion: Played for laughs when he visits Tamahome's home village and makes a complete ass of himself expressing shock and pity at the level of poverty he finds. Notably, even ''Tasuki'' (normally the king of insensitive remarks himself) is appalled at one point.
* CoolSword: Hotohori is gifted a special holy sword by Taiitsukun, and gifts it to Miaka for her protection. [[spoiler:Miaka absolutely ''wrecks Soi's shit'' with it later on.]]
* CulturedBadass: Refined, sophisticated, and a skilled swordsman.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: He looks very effeminate to the point that Miaka and a few characters have mistaken him as a girl.
* TheEmperor: Konan's reigning emperor by the time of the (original) story.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Nuriko, Nuriko, Nuriko... Also, one of the bandits from Mt. Reikaku.
* KingIncognito: Pulls this on Miaka, then later travels with Tasuki and Mitsukake for a few days before letting them know he's the Emperor. The latter two are ''mortified'' at this discovery, as they'd both been quite rude and antagonistic to him upon first introduction.
* LadyOfWar: Fights like one.
* LonelyRichKid:[[spoiler: He was one of these in his childhood when he was educated and sheltered in Konan's palace as the prince before becoming the emperor at the age of 14, because of these he never went outside Konan's palace and city, make friends and experience love even from his previous emperor father and his mother. 284* LongHairedPrettyBoy: So much that Miaka mistakes him as a girl.
* LoveDodecahedron: Hotohori is in love with Miaka, who is in love with Tamahome. Meanwhile, Nuriko is in love with ''him''.
* LovingAShadow: Was in love with Miaka's image as the Suzaku no Miko, rather than as the person she truly was.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: [[spoiler:He was never present in any of his fallen fellow Suzaku Warriors deaths.]]
* ProudBeauty: While he doesn't brag about it loudly or arrogantly, make no mistake that Hotohori ''knows'' he's a beautiful man.
* RedIsHeroic: In addition to red being Team Suzaku's ColorMotif, Hotohori is mostly clad in said color.
* ReplacementGoldfish: He looks just like [[spoiler:his unbeknownst-to-him half-brother Tendou]], who once shared a relationship with Hotohori's later wife, Houki.
* RichSuitorPoorSuitor: Is the Rich Suitor ''twice''. [[spoiler: Miaka picks Tamahome over him first, then Houki picks ''him'' over his half-brother.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: TheEmperor. A reasonably good politician and administrator. A really badass fighter.
* SecondEpisodeIntroduction: Introduced in the anime's second episode.

* SupportingLeader: Being TheEmperor, he's the highest authority figure of the protagonists. However, Miaka is the SupportingProtagonist while fellow Suzaku Warrior Tamahome is TheHero.

----
* AgentPeacock: Nuriko has the strength of 10 or more grown men, but isn't all that tall or muscular or ''masculine'' and in fact is proud of his cuteness.
* AmbiguouslyBi: He's in love with Emperor Hotohori, but there are subtle hints that he ''might have'' also developed feelings for Miaka in the time before his death.
** AllLoveIsUnrequited: Nuriko stated in volume 9 that his female side liked Hotohori, but his male side loved Miaka... and neither returned his feelings.
* AttractiveBentGender: He's a guy and yet he was selected to be in the emperor's harem. Though it seems that almost no one knows that he's a boy at first.
** At first Nuriko only wears female clothes and looks good on them, but later he puts on male clothing more frequently and [[http://orig01.deviantart.net/3c22/f/2015/061/a/5/fushigi_yuugi__nuriko_by_fs_amethystashes-d8k7etw.png damn is he handsome.]]

* BigBrotherMentor: ''Suzaku Hi Den'' states that he played this role towards a girl named [[spoiler: Houki, his IdenticalStranger and Hotohori's eventual wife.]]
** He is also always willing to give Tamahome advices on his relationship with Miaka.
* BigGuyFatalitySyndrome: [[spoiler:Nuriko is the first of the seven Suzaku warriors to be killed off, ushering in the AnyoneCanDie phase of the story.]]
* BoisterousBruiser: He's proud of his looks, but also VERY proud of his strength.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Nuriko is mostly established as a fun, sensible ally... so [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness it's pretty strange to look back at the early incident]] where he almost let Miaka ''drown in a pond'' out of psychotic jealousy over Hotohori.
** More than letting her drown, he was hoping to [[HumiliationConga make her look like a fool in front of Hotohori.]] Miaka [[WhatTheHellHero proved him wrong]] and even ''slapped'' him for that, then brought him a small, cute pebble she found in the pond anyway. This proves to be quite the HumblePie eating moment, and from then on Nuriko shapes up into the character we know and love.
* CuteBruiser: Adorable and the Suzaku warrior's [[TheBigGuy main muscle]].
* DeadPersonImpersonation: [[spoiler: He tried to cope with the death of his beloved sister Kourin [[MySiblingWillLiveThroughMe by dressing up as a girl and living a life similar to the one she would've probably lived]].]]
* ADeathInTheLimelight: [[spoiler:Nuriko gets several focus episodes leading up to his death, mainly revolving around his gender identity and changing feelings towards Miaka.]]
* DudeLooksLikeALady: He's a crossdresser and had everyone, both InUniverse and out, fooled that he's a woman.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:The main cause of his death is Ashitare impaling the left side of his body with his claws.]]
* ImportantHaircut: To symbolize that he was not going to chase after his sister's shadow anymore and begin living like a man. [[TearJerker Too bad, it didn't last long...]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Like Hotohori and Tasuki, he loved Miaka too, but unlike them, [[GracefulLoser he never fought with Tamahome over that.]] He did confess his feelings to Tamahome, but quickly assured him not to worry, because he also liked Tamahome as well as everyone else, so he wanted them happy together.
* {{Jerkass}}: At first towards Miaka at the start of the manga and anime when he assumed Miaka will ruin his plan of falling in love with Hotohori and begins to treat her badly even worse he attempted to have her drowned, it didn't work and Miaka tells him off by smacking him in the face then gives him a pebble as a act of kindness and he begins to treat her more respectful as a friend.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After Miaka treats him with kindness, he becomes this as he decided to help Miaka return to her world and once she comes back, he helps her once again in search for the other Suzaku warriors proving he's compassionate and loyal to his friends despite mocking Miaka in a childish way and having bit of a bad temper.
* LargeHam: He sometimes speak very theatrically.
* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler:Nuriko's death is the series' first WhamEpisode that officially kickstarts the CerebusSyndrome.]]
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Justified as he was crossdressing. He later [[ImportantHaircut cuts it off]].
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: His earliest behavior towards Miaka.
* MeaningfulAppearance: He has a tragic mole under his left eye. It gets quite the focus in a very tragic scene of his past, when [[spoiler: his child self's face is shown while he cries his heart out after the death of his younger sister, Kourin]].
* MusclesAreMeaningless: He is pretty slender, but he is stronger than all the Suzaku warriors combined.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye:
** [[spoiler:To his eldest brother, his last sibling, as Nuriko dies in a mission on a far away land.]]
** [[spoiler:Only Miaka and Tamahome were with him in his death bed. His fellow Suzaku Warriors either are in Konan (Hotohori) or arrived too late (the rest).]]
* NoBisexuals: Averted. When Nuriko starts to develop feelings for Miaka, he states that his male side has feelings for her while his female side still has feelings for Hotohori. While this could be considered problematic for [[TransEqualsGay other reasons]], Nuriko's attraction to someone of the opposite sex does not instantly cancel out attraction to the same sex.
* OddFriendship: Nuriko desperately yearns to have the body of a woman, Tasuki is a HeManWomanHater. They nevertheless develop a fun, teasing rapport, perhaps best seen when they join forces to cheer Miaka up at the Star Festival after a major setback. [[spoiler:Fittingly, Tasuki is one of the characters who takes Nuriko's death the hardest.]]
* OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank: Nuriko battles against Ashitare, and wins, though he loses ''a lot'' of blood in the process. To make matters worse, he is determined to get the Shinzaho for Miaka, and walks towards the cave and moves the heavy stone blocking the entrance. All this results in Nuriko [[spoiler: hemorrhaging to death]].
* PersonalityPowers: A subversion. Nuriko takes pride in extremely ladylike behavior, but exhibits super strength.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: In series, but especially in the Eikoden OVA, [[spoiler: where he is reincarnated as a {{Moe}} little girl with SuperStrength.]]
* RealMenWearPink: A dude who crossdresses and behaves rather femininely in female clothes, but when he ditches his female side, he is actually very manly.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:First member of the main cast to bite it.]]
* SilentCredits: A variant. Unlike in the [[spoiler: death episode]] of the other [[spoiler:slain]] Suzaku Warriors, the regular ending theme did not play in Nuriko's but rather a different one but played in a very monotonous manner.
* SnowMeansDeath: [[spoiler:He dies in a snowy field.]]
* StupidSacrifice: [[spoiler: And in the end, it didn't accomplish a lot.]]
* SupernaturallyValidatedTransPerson: [[spoiler:Implied in ''Eikoden'', in which Nuriko is reincarnated as a little girl.]]
* SuperStrength: His celestial power as one of the Suzaku Seven.
* TookALevelInKindness: After Miaka gives him a HumblePie he begins to treat Miaka nicely while not above insulting her in a playful way.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: How Miaka finds out his gender.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Dresses like a girl and is one of the good guys.

----
* AsianFoxSpirit: Chichiri isn't a literal ''kitsune'', but numerous characters remark that his CoolMask makes him look like one. His celestial powers, mostly based around illusion and shapeshifting, and his trickster-ish personality also line up with folklore of ''kitsune''.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:Both Chichiri's fiancee and his best friend died while he was on bad terms with both due to a LoveTriangle situation. His friendly, philosophical demeanor is an attempt to move on from that pain.]]
* AttractiveBentGender: In the manga.
* BewareTheSillyOnes:
** Chichiri is a StepfordSmiler who generates some of the goofier moments among the Suzaku warriors. He's also a skilled enough mage that he is one of the very few people able to thwart Nakago's SuperpowerLottery on a regular basis.
** Then there is his DarkAndTroubledPast, in which [[spoiler:Chichiri flew into a murderous UnstoppableRage when his best friend attempted to steal his fiance.]]
* CommonalityConnection: With Mitsukake, as they are the oldest and most mature of the Suzaku warriors. They also both lost loved ones in the same flood in the past, as well as [[spoiler:each losing the woman they loved to an early death.]]
* CoolMask: A permanently smiling mask that conceals his true expression and his missing eye.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: Was involved in a LoveTriangle. It ended '''badly'''.]]
* ADayInTheLimelight: Chichiri's focus episode in the second [=OVA=], which tells the story of his DarkAndTroubledPast, is widely regarded as one of the best parts even by fans who don't care for the [=OVAs=] otherwise.
* ADeadlyAffair: In his past, although it is more complicated than it first seems. [[spoiler:Chichiri's best friend kissed his fiancee, causing the engagement to be broken. He failed and lost his eye in the attempt. Chichiri's fiancee also died in the same flood. This led him to become TheAtoner and to cover his disfigured face with a smiling mask.]]
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:Alongside Tasuki in the main series finale, he too mocks Nakago's aspirations to godhood and vows to fight as long as he can.]]
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Alongside Tasuki, he's fearless about mocking the grossly overpowered Nakago's [[spoiler:about-to-be-realized]] pretensions to godhood.
* EmergencyImpersonation: He temporarily masks himself into Hotohori to take over his royal duties as so Hotohori can have a chance to travel with Miaka and perform his Celestial Warrior duties.
* EverybodysDeadDave: In his backstory. [[spoiler:The floods that killed his best friend and fiance ''also'' wiped out his family of origin and most of his hometown as well.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Subverted. It's actually just a mask.
* EyeScream: [[spoiler:Subjected to this in the past when he tried to rescue his best friend from drowning as a tree trunk stabbed him in his left eye.]]
* ForgottenPhlebotinum: Chichiri gets hit with this pretty hard. Early in the series, he's a skilled enough [[VoluntaryShapeshifting shapeshifter]] to impersonate both Hotohori ''and'' Nakago flawlessly, and also demonstrates that he can teleport (taking other people with him!) over very long distances. These abilities are mostly forgotten around the time the Suzaku warriors arrive in Hokkan.
* HandicappedBadass: Well, he is a formidable WarriorMonk who ''is'' missing an eye.
* HeCleansUpNicely: He's quite handsome under the mask.

He ''has'' the magic power to get rid of it permanently, but chooses not to as a form of penance for [[MyGreatestFailure his greatest failure]]. Instead, he covers his face with [[StepfordSmiler a permanently smiling mask]].
* KillUsBoth: He attempts this in the second OVA, but survives.
* KungFuWizard: Team Suzaku's resident magic user, but that doesn't mean he's not skilled in physical combat.
* LetsGetDangerous: He's almost always easygoing and kind. Pray to the Four Gods if he's not joking.
* MagicStaff: His weapon. Aside from using it for magic, Chichiri can also use it as a bo staff for physical combat.v
* MurderTheHypotenuse: Tragically deconstructed in his backstory. [[spoiler:The hypotenuse in question was Chichiri's best friend. In the midst of attacking him, Chichiri had a [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment of regret]] and tried to stop, but it was too late and his friend died.]] This devastated him (to the point of attempting suicide in one of the character novels) and led to him becoming TheAtoner.
* MyGreatestFailure: The deal with [[spoiler: his old girlfriend and his friend.]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: [[spoiler:To Nuriko, who was notably the only time Chichiri missed a fallen fellow Suzaku Warrior's final moments.]]
* NiceGuy: Even though he wears his [[EyesAlwaysShut mask]] to appear cheerful, he's polite and respectful to everyone even his enemies.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** There is a very iconic moment in the series when he loses his cool, and unleashes the mother of ShamingTheMob speeches to a bunch of Kutou and Konan warriors Mitsukake [[TearJerker just DIED to heal]], as they were about to go at it again. They fall silent.
** In the final episodes, [[spoiler:he shows up alongside Tasuki in the real world to defend Miaka from Nakago. Tasuki proposes his usual HotBlooded AttackAttackAttack approach... and the normally calm, philosophical Chichiri ''completely agrees it's time to kick some ass.'']]
* PalsWithJesus: Chichiri trained under Taiitsukun directly, and is on quite friendly terms with her and the Nyan-Nyans.
%%* ReligiousBruiser
* RightHandCat: After [[spoiler: Mitsukake dies]], he keeps the other's kitten.
* ScarsAreForever: One in his left eye.
* ShirtlessScene: In one of the [=OVAs=], and turns out to be ''ripped.''
* TheSmartGuy: Chichiri is generally the go-to person for explaining some of the magical forces the Suzaku warriors encounter, and tends toward misdirection and trickery in battle ([[MinoredInAssKicking although he can kick ass when needed]]). He's also insightful about other people, and assesses Yui's state of mind with dead-on accuracy ''very'' early in the series.
* StepfordSmiler: [[spoiler: Behind his [[EyesAlwaysShut mask]] with a scar covering his entire left eye and half of his nose bridge which he got attempting to rescue his best friend.]]
%%* SuperDeformed
%%* ThisIsUnforgivable

Where Tasuki is ready to go down in a blaze of glory, Chichiri just coldly and methodically states he's going to ''bring Nakago's head'' to [[spoiler:the fallen Suzaku warriors]] as a gift. Bottom line... do not piss off Chichiri.
* UnreliableNarrator: A sign of how deeply his DarkAndTroubledPast affects him. [[spoiler:He tells Miaka that he killed his best friend, but a later flashback shows it was a tragic accident and Chichiri actually tried to save him. However, Chichiri is so guilt-ridden over the incident that he sees himself as his friend's killer all the same.]]
* UnstoppableRage: Occurred in his backstory.
%%* VerbalTic
* VillainRespect: He gets this from ''Nakago'' of all people, who is legitimately impressed when Chichiri manages to repel one of his chi attacks.
* WhatTheHellHero: Chichiri is arguably the first (and one of the few) of the Suzaku characters to call Miaka out on being childish and irresponsible, albeit he's fairly polite about it. Unfortunately, it ends up as AdviceBackfire as it prompts Miaka to take some extremely foolish risks in the name of being "responsible."

----

* AbsurdPhobia: Tasuki's hatred/phobia of water is so extreme that not only does he have SuperDrowningSkills, he's also violently seasick throughout most of the Suzaku warriors' voyage to Hokkan. This is almost entirely played for comedy and is a frequent source of VitriolicBestBuds style teasing from Tamahome.
* AnimalMotifs: In his bandit days, he was known as the Phantom Wolf, and has CuteLittleFangs, indicating his rougher personality.
* AttackAttackAttack: He's pretty much the honey badger of the Suzaku warriors, eager to settle things in combat and utterly refusing to back down from a fight even when badly beaten or disadvantaged.
* BadassLongcoat: His signature outfit in the anime series is a long, dark blue coat with lighter blue trim.
* BigBrotherInstinct: To Chiriko, more emphasized in the manga than the anime, but it gets a callback in the ''Eikoden'' story when he's the one most often seen playing and interacting with [[spoiler:baby reincarnated]] Chiriko.
%%* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: During an episode of the second OVA, in which he tries to force himself on Miaka. [[spoiler:The responsible for it turns out to be Hiko, one of the Four Demon Gods]].
* CallingYourAttacks: Notable as one of the few characters in the series who has a signature attack ''to'' call.
* ChewingTheScenery: He is very theatrical.
* CombatHandFan: Tasuki's signature weapon is his flaming war fan. Taiitskun's MidSeasonUpgrade turns the fan from metal into crystal.
* CombatPragmatist: His first line of attack is a [[CombatHandFan fan that shoots fire]], and he's not above combining it with a DynamicEntry. Nor is he above taking hostages, or attacking while his opponent is talking or otherwise distracted. On the rare occasion he's put HonorBeforeReason, he explicitly regrets it.
%%* CuteLittleFangs
* DefiantToTheEnd: Pinned down near death at least twice in the series, Tasuki responds by straight up laughing in his opponent's face and continuing to charge into battle.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Nakago, at one point vastly more powered and [[spoiler:on the verge of godhood]], asks Tasuki if he wants to be known as the first man struck down by a god for his defiance. Tasuki responds by laughing in his face and continuing to taunt.
* DrivenToSuicide: After being BrainwashedAndCrazy and [[spoiler:attempting to force himself on Miaka.]]
* FieryRedhead: An orange haired person with literal fire powers.
* GoodIsNotNice: The rudest of the Suzaku warriors with a tendency to have bad manners and insensitive remarks to everyone but he's still a good guy.
* HeManWomanHater: Due to his five ''very'' short-tempered older sisters.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Kouji... or not, depending on your interpretation.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: Tasuki flies into a hysterical rage upon seeing [[spoiler:Nuriko's corpse]], shouting for [[spoiler:Nuriko]] to get up and stop playing around.
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: Tasuki fulfills many aspects of this trope, as he sports a Kansai accent, and his bluntly insensitive commentary and irascible personality are often a source of comic relief.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Way more jerkish than Tamahome and Nuriko as he tends to be rudely insensitive and fights with Tamahome. Still, he strongly values friendship as he cries in mourning for [[spoiler: Nuriko, Chiriko, Mitsukake and Hotohori's death.]]
* KillItWithFire: His CombatHandFan generates fire.
* TheLancer: Particularly after Hotohori goes OutOfFocus, Tasuki comes to fill this role to Tamahome. Where Tamahome is more introspective and levelheaded, Tasuki is HotBlooded and extroverted, and often takes point in situations where Tamahome is unable or unwilling.
* LightningBruiser: His primary gift is speed, but Tasuki also wields incredibly powerful fire magic and can withstand a great deal of damage.
* LoveableRogue: He's the leader of a none-too-savory bandit gang (albeit [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything not one guilty of any major onscreen crimes]]), makes his introduction by kidnapping Miaka, and initially tries to lie his way out of joining the group. Nevertheless, he's as loyal as it gets once he officially throws in with the Suzaku warriors.
* ManlyTears: Although he is hotheaded, he's capable of doing this when anyone close to him dies.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: When first introduced, he makes a very fearsome show of kidnapping Miaka and threatens to make an example of her... only to back down immediately when she fights back, and to promptly get steamrollered by her optimism and energy. He and Kouji even remark on this when the whole episode is over, baffled at themselves for treating her so nicely.
* NearRapeExperience: [[spoiler: Poor Miaka...]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: [[spoiler:He missed Nuriko, Mitsukake, and Hotohori's final hours.]]
* OddFriendship:
** Tasuki is a HeManWomanHater, yet becomes thick as thieves with WholesomeCrossdresser Nuriko; they both enjoy teasing if not outright trolling Miaka or Tamahome and often join forces to do it. [[spoiler:Fittingly, Tasuki is one of the characters who takes Nuriko's death the hardest.]]
** Also with Chiriko, with whom he develops a surrogate big brother relationship, despite the fact that Tasuki is a BookDumb BoisterousBruiser and Chiriko is a soft-spoken teen genius.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: Some of Tasuki's rude remarks are intentional (generally those directed at [[VitriolicBestBuds Tamahome]]), but he also has a tendency towards accidental unfortunate bluntness as well, such as when he attempts to defend Miaka from criticism on her [[LethalChef cooking]].
-->'''Tasuki:''' Just because the food sucks, doesn't mean you have to say it!
* PersonalityPowers: He's brash, abrasive and HotBlooded, so naturally, he also wields a powerful fire attack.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Very little actual banditry is seen from the Mount Reikaku thieves. Despite being their leader, Tasuki himself is rarely, if ever, shown actually committing theft.
* RebelLeader: In his case, Bandit Leader.
* RedOniBlueOni: Tasuki is the walking embodiment of Red Oni, and ends up with three Blue Onis over the course of the series: Kouji (his blue oni in the Mt. Reikaku bandit gang), Tamahome (with whom he becomes VitriolicBestBuds), and finally Chichiri (as [[spoiler:they are the only two Suzaku warriors left alive in the book by the end of the series]]).
* SuperDrowningSkills: Tasuki is deeply phobic of water and cannot swim. The one time he does demonstrate any swimming ability, it foreshadows that something is actually ''wrong'' with him.
* TalkToTheFist: He pulls this on '''Nakago''' of all people, [[spoiler:deciding to cut off one of Nakago's evil monologues by simply chucking a sword at his face. Unfortunately, Soi [[TakingTheBullet takes the bullet]] instead.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: One of Tasuki's strongest virtues is his fierce loyalty. This is what initially causes him ''not'' to join the Suzaku warriors, as he was bound by his old boss' dying wish that he lead the Mt. Reikaku bandits. Once he's able to throw in his lot with Suzaku he becomes one of the team's staunchest fighters, at one point willing to sacrifice his own life [[YouShallNotPass in a desperate attempt to buy time for Miaka and Chichiri to save themselves]]. ([[spoiler:All three survive, but Tasuki just barely.]]) In addition, the ONLY time Tasuki falters in battle is when circumstances require him to fire on a friend, which he abjectly cannot bring himself to do.
* UnfriendlyFire: Played for comedy. As part of their VitriolicBestBuds relationship, Tasuki has a habit of "accidentally" roasting Tamahome with his fire attack.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Tamahome. They got off to a rocky start (first meeting when Tamahome was BrainwashedAndCrazy and nearly killed Tasuki), but their relationship evolves into more brotherly squabbling than anything genuinely antagonistic.
%%* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Or in his case, water.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Tasuki purposely holds back in his battle with BrainwashedAndCrazy Tamahome after Miaka begs him not to cause serious harm, and is beaten nearly to death as a result.

* AttractiveBentGender: '''''HELL NO.''''' Notable, in that he is the ''only'' guy in the Suzaku group to not be able to pull this off.
* BackupFromOtherworld: [[spoiler:Shows up in the FinalBattle along with the other deceased Suzaku Warriors possessing the Nyan-Nyans' bodies, mostly to guard Miaka from Nakago's attacks.]]
* BeautifulAllAlong: We met him as a man in rags and with PermaStubble...
* TheBigGuy: Subverted. Although Mitsukake is the largest and most physically imposing of the Suzaku warriors, he is mostly a NonActionGuy who serves as the team's healer.
* CastFromHitPoints: His powers can only be used once a day, and even then he's left very drained. [[spoiler: The time he uses them twice, he dies.]]
* CommonalityConnection: With Chichiri, as they are pretty much the only grown-ups among the Suzaku warriors, and both suffered similar losses in their past.
* DeadpanSnarker: "The Emperor is rather popular..."
* DefrostingIceKing: When Miaka first met him, he coldly rejects her plea for help because of his failure to rescue Shouka from dying, he quickly warms up to the former when he put Shouka out of her misery to save her.
%%* GentleGiant
* {{Hachimaki}}: He's always wearing a bandana.
* HealingHands: Not only is his Suzaku mark in his right palm, but it's also where his powers come from.
* HeroicSacrifice:[[spoiler: He sacrificed his entire life force to save everyone in war-ravaged Konan even the Kutou soldiers when he met a woman with her baby also named Shouka, who was close to death.]]
* HospitalHottie: Or rather, the closest you can get to it in an Ancient China themed fantasy. Mitsukake's celestial power is the power to heal people, and he's very easy on the eyes.
* ImportantHaircut: He cuts his long MessyHair and shaves his PermaStubble right before joining Miaka and the others.
* TheLostLenore: He arrived too late to save his lover Shouka, and quietly carries that guilt with him to the end of the series. [[spoiler:Mitsukake is at least partially inspired to commit his HeroicSacrifice to save a sick child by the same name.]]
* TheMedic: To the Suzaku Team, given that the ability to heal others is his celestial power.
* MyGreatestFailure: Failed to save his girlfriend and fellow healer, Shouka. [[spoiler: She CameBackWrong.]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: He missed Shouka's [[CameBackWrong initial]] death. [[spoiler:He also missed Nuriko's.]]
%%* PersonalityPowers
* RightHandCat: Tama-chan.
* RousingSpeech:
** Mitsukake doesn't talk a lot, but ''damn'' does he make it count when the team is shattered by [[spoiler:the death of Nuriko]]. In the anime, the episode closes out with a powerful speech on why the tragedy matters and how they have to keep going.
** He also leads off the YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre speech to Chichiri in the second OVA, empathizing with his losses and reminding him of how much good he'd done in spite of that.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: The tallest Suzaku warrior and is a HospitalHottie.

----

* AdaptationDistillation: In the manga, Chiriko's SplitPersonality is much more fleshed out (he is a mature TeenGenius when his constellation character is showing, but a normal and somewhat immature 13-year-old when it isn't). In the anime, it receives far less if any focus.
%%* AdorablyPrecociousChild
* BackupFromOtherworld: [[spoiler:Shows up in the FinalBattle along with the other deceased Suzaku Warriors possessing the Nyan-Nyans' bodies, mostly to guard Miaka from Nakago's attacks.]]
* BigBrotherWorship: Although not literal brothers, Chiriko very much has this attitude towards Tasuki, whom he looks up to as a "manly man." Tasuki in turn is quite protective and affectionate with Chiriko, despite being otherwise impatient and easily annoyed by children.
* BigDamnHeroes: Chiriko arrives just in time [[spoiler:to save the other Suzaku warriors from Amiboshi's attack during the first summoning ceremony.]]
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler:Forced to stab himself to death to prevent Miboshi, who has possessed Chiriko's body, from doing further damage. The manga takes this a step further by making the point that Chiriko's constellation character is NOT showing, meaning he's just a normal 13-year-old kid when he does this.]]
* DudeLooksLikeALady: You wouldn't know he's a guy if anyone didn't say so.
* HeroicSuicide: [[spoiler: Since he couldn't expel Miboshi from his body, he took a third option and offed himself.]]
%%* InnocentProdigy
* MacGyvering: Lacking a musical instrument of his own, Chiriko uses a blade of grass [[spoiler:as a whistle to disrupt Amiboshi's MusicalAssassin attack.]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: [[spoiler:He missed Nuriko's final moments.]]

* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: And eventually [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking the other way around]].
* BadassCape: Nakago heads into battle in his military cape and is all but confirmed to be the most powerful fighter in the story.
* BestServedCold: Oh, ''boy.'' [[spoiler:Nakago bides his time for ''years'' as a seemingly loyal servant of the Kutou Emperor. The entire war with Konan is part of his plot to tie the Emperor's forces down elsewhere -- so that Nakago himself can return and slaughter the Emperor in retaliation for decimating Nakago's tribe and taking Nakago himself as a child sex slave decades earlier.]]
* BigBad: He is the main antagonist and FinalBoss of the story.
* CharClone: A badass soldier, who wants revenge on the world and seeks to become a god. Also, he's blond, has a cool helmet, and has a VillainousCrush on the male lead.
%%* TheChessmaster
* CoitusUninterruptus: Suboshi walks in on him having sex with Soi at one point. Nakago isn't the least bit bothered. Is also on the receiving end, when he goes to talk to the emperor, who is in bed with 3 concubines.
%%* DarkAndTroubledPast
* DepravedBisexual: Has Soi as his lover. Also kisses Yui. Is fixated on Tamahome and even gives him a ForcefulKiss.
* DeusSexMachina: Having sex with Soi heals his injuries and recharges his chi.
* DisproportionateRetribution: He used and punished innocent people who has nothing to do with his suffering.
* TheDogBitesBack: Although perhaps not in the way you'd think. [[spoiler: After serving the Emperor of Kutou for most of the series--the same Emperor who had incidentally wiped out his tribe and sexually abused him as a child--Nakago finally rises up, stages a coup, and murders him.]]
* DontYouDarePityMe: In the final battle, when Seiryu is finally sealed and losing his power, Nakago finally just gives in to be defeated by Tamahome. When Tamahome asks him why he didn't dodge his deadly punch, he's pissed off, because he hates to be pitied.
* DragonInChief: Although Nakago nominally serves TheEmperor of Kutou, he is always the driving force of Seiryuu's plots as well as the biggest physical threat. [[spoiler:After he bumps off the Emperor, he becomes ''the'' BigBad.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Never ''actually'' wanted to rape Miaka [[spoiler: if only because he'd been through that trauma himself]]. (In fact, that was Tomo's idea). Suzaku protecting her was just a ConvenientExcuse to not do it, and just let Miaka believe he did.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Tomo is in love with him. [[spoiler:The emperor also used him as a SexSlave when he was young.]]
* EvilCounterpart: To Tamahome.
%%* EvilGloating
* FacialMarkings: His Seiryuu mark is located on his forehead.
* FourStarBadass: Is the general of the Kutou Army.
* FreudianExcuse: One that's revealed at the very last minute, right as he's dying.
* GodhoodSeeker: He wants to be a god. This is actually the main reason why he manipulates Yui.
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:He is directly responsible for Hotohori and Mitsukake's deaths. He also rendered Tamahome OnlyMostlyDead during the FinalBattle until the Suzaku warrior found a HeroicSecondWind.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His [[TheChessmaster Chessmaster]] tendencies indirectly blow up in his face. [[spoiler:He stokes Yui's jealousy of Miaka and Tamahome to such an extent that, on an angry impulse, she uses her second wish to try to separate them instead of giving Nakago [[GodhoodSeeker the godhood he had requested]]. By the time her third wish rolls around, Yui has already had her HeelRealization and turned against him.]]
* IcyBlueEyes: His blue eyes match his cold and calculating demeanor.
* KiManipulation: His celestial power allows him to use his own energy.
* TheKingslayer: Nakago has the distinction of [[spoiler:killing ''two'' Emperors -- Hotohori as well as the Emperor of his own country Kutou.]]
* KickTheDog: This happens so frequently that dog kicking is practically Nakago's other superpower, but in one scene in particular, he's seen taking a songbird out of its cage and crushing it in his bare hands.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He's a good looking man. Miaka even compares him to a star when she first sees him.
* LoveEpiphany: [[spoiler:For Soi when she died protecting him. If him carrying around her corpse from the battlefield in Kounan back to the palace in ''Kutou'' is any indication. Watase also said in a free talk or interview that Nakago loved Soi but realized it too late.]]
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:The former general of the Kutou army, Kouyuu Gi, is actually his DisappearedDad. Nakago finds this out too late and kills Kouyuu, apparently to get a KlingonPromotion.]]
%%* ManipulativeBastard
* NoBodyLeftBehind: [[spoiler:He dies in the real world, so his body vanishes when Tamahome kills him]].
* PetTheDog: In Soi's flashback, when he saved her from being abused by her pimp.
* RapeAsBackstory: Part of his FreudianExcuse.
* SelfMadeOrphan: As a child, he accidentally killed his mom when he tried to save her from her rapists, since he couldn't control his newly awakened powers. [[spoiler: As an adult, he kills the Shogun of Kutou to get his rank... and later finds out he's his DisappearedDad.]]
* TheStarscream: He's plotting against the Emperor of Kutou from day one [[spoiler:and actually does succeed in overthrowing him, although his ambitions [[GodhoodSeeker are much greater]] than mere rulership of Kutou.]]
* SuperpowerLottery: Nakago definitely got a winning ticket. His ki manipulation powers allow him to cast [[BarrierWarrior impenetrable defensive shields]], [[KamehameHadoken use ki blasts against opponents]], fly, teleport, negate the Suzaku warriors' powers, and pass through solid objects.
* TomatoInTheMirror: Downplayed. Nakago is directly told at one point that he's a character in a book, and his response is "Who cares?" while he goes right on with his evil plan.
* XanatosSpeedChess: Nakago is ''excellent'' at finding new ways to be an effective ManipulativeBastard no matter how many wrenches the Suzaku warriors throw into his plans. [[spoiler:For example, he does not predict the fight between Tasuki and BrainwashedAndCrazy Tamahome, but he is quick to exploit it in the hopes one will kill the other. In another case, he exploits Amiboshi's death (a major loss for Seiryuu) by urging his grief-stricken twin to take revenge against Tamahome's family -- which he correctly predicts will harden the rivalry between Suzaku and Seiryuu and allow him to further isolate and control Yui. ]]

* HeelFaceTurn: While one of the least evil enemies, coming in contact with Miaka helps him pull this.

* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Two instances. Due to this, he ends up saving Miaka from an accident (with her mistaking him for Suboshi at first) and helps protecting her from Tomo. The second time, after Suboshi killed Tomo and saved him, Amiboshi tries to persuade him into drinking the aforementioned drink and live a peaceful life with him and the elderly couple. Suboshi refuses the offer and feeds him the drink [[IntimateHealing mouth-to-mouth]] instead, which leads him into losing his memory for real and survives the war as a result.]]
* TheMole: He pretended to be Chiriko in order to infiltrate the Suzaku army, but due to both the real Chiriko’s intervention and his own [[AntiVillain morality]], he ended up killing no one and threw himself to a river instead.
* MoralityChain: With him around, Suboshi was merely kind of a JerkAss. When Suboshi thought he was dead... all he needed was a push from Nakago to fly off the deep end [[spoiler: and kill Tamahome's family in revenge.]]
* MoralityPet: One of the only two people Suboshi treats nicely, the other being Yui.

* RedOniBlueOni: Blue Oni to Suboshi's Red Oni.
* SiblingYinYang: His younger twin Suboshi is a JerkAss and capable of truly immoral acts, while he is pleasant and can’t kill anyone even if his life depends on it.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:The only Seiryuu warrior to be alive by the end of the story.]]
* SpoilerOpening: The actual Chiriko is constantly shown in the OBB ''since the very first episode'', rendering the twist of Amiboshi being TheMole useless.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Gets this InUniverse by Miaka. She thinks that someone who makes such nice and calming music like him can’t be a truly bad person, and gets extremely distressed at his [[spoiler: supposed]] death.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Aside from being TheMole, he's the most moral member of the Seiryuu warriors.
* TwinTelepathy: [[spoiler: The moment Suboshi dies (and calls Amiboshi’s name), Amiboshi sheds tears and says that his chest hurts, despite [[LaserGuidedAmnesia not remembering anything]].]]
* {{Twincest}}: Him and Suboshi give quite the vibes, and it's NOT helped by [[spoiler: Suboshi giving him an IntimateHealing.]] And definitely not helped by [[YaoiFangirl Miaka's]] thoughts during that episode either...

* HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday: One of the light novels is filled with scenes of him obsessing over Tasuki, including Tasuki's good looks, quickly followed by assurances that it is in a completely one hundred percent platonic and heterosexual way.
%%* HotBlooded
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Tasuki's red oni, as Kouji is the (relatively) more sedate personality who settles into leadership of the Reikaku bandits, while Tasuki goes off adventuring.
* RunningGag: "Knock knock!"
* SuddenSequelDeathSyndrome: Zig-zagged. [[spoiler:In the first OVA, he shows up to take his revenge on Nakago-in-Tamahome's-body; however it's also stated that much of what happened during that confrontation was actually an illusion generated by Tomo, leaving it ambiguous whether Kouji was really there at all.]]
* TalkingToThemself: Kouji's biggest quirk is his habit of holding both sides of a conversation when introducing himself.

%%* ApocalypseMaiden
* BerserkButton: Any mention of Miaka drives her into a frothing rage.
* EvilRedhead: Though she could also be strawberry blonde.
* CharacterShilling: Possibly the biggest recipient of this in the entire franchise, as the Suzaku warriors all profusely thank her for... uh, existing.
* ClingyJealousGirl: To a man who wants nothing to do with her, no less.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: She contrasts with both Miaka (who, while notoriously TooDumbToLive, was at least usually ''trying'' to do the right thing) and with Yui (who was also consumed with jealousy, but generally stayed on the right side of EvenEvilHasStandards) from the original series.
* DrivenToSuicide: After she realizes what she's done. [[spoiler: Tamahome rescues her, though, whether the audiences want it or not.]]
* HateSink: Mayo was designed to be unlikable, being a selfish and rude girl who is obsessed with her own love story.
* HotForTeacher: The guy she loves is her P.E. teacher and coach... Taka Sukunami [[spoiler: a.k.a Tamahome]].
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Unfortunately for everyone around her, she ''is'', by virtue of being a priestess.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Every action she performs is for selfish reasons.
* {{Jerkass}}: Yui at her worst looks like [[Manga/FruitsBasket Tohru Honda]] compared to her.
* KarmaHoudini: Even worse than Nakago. At least the guy ''did'' go through some pretty horrific shit that explains why he turned out like that.
* KickTheDog:
** To Miaka, ''every chance she gets''.
** She's also cruel to Hotohori's son Boushin, [[spoiler:at one point going out of her way to tell a disparaging story about Hotohori to the young boy -- especially cruel considering Boushin was not yet born when his father died and has no direct memories of him.]]
* KneelBeforeFrodo: Gets this from Konan, just as Miaka did.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Although the "love" part is downplayed (being more of an obsessive crush), the "evil" part isn't.
* MaliciousSlander: Her specialty. Once she travels to Konan she spreads the rumor that Miaka is a slut who was two-timing Hotohori and Tamahome. She later tells Hotohori's teen son that his dad never loved him or his wife. She is later called out for her lies.
* MorningSickness: Subverted. She sits up in bed heaving, ''thinking'' it's just morning sickness (in her mind, a small price to pay for bearing Taka's child, especially instead of Miaka), but instead, she vomits up a magical orb that lets her see what Taka is up to.
* MoralMyopia: She tells everyone that Miaka is a selfish bitch who only thinks of her own happiness. Well, this is the girl who is willing to fuck up a whole universe [[spoiler: just so she can steal Miaka's ''husband'' Taka and their unborn child.]]
* MustMakeAmends: [[spoiler:After she has her moment of MyGodWhatHaveIDone.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: As she realizes how much of an asshole she's been.
* MysticalPregnancy: She is a (presumably virgin) 16-year-old girl, with no boyfriend to speak of, yet is three months pregnant. The baby is Miaka's, and has been transferred into Mayo's uterus by supernatural means. [[spoiler: That was Miaka's doing, in order to save Konan, though everyone in and out of universe is led to believe that Mayo stole the fetus.]]
* NunTooHoly: As the {{Miko}}, she's ''supposed'' to be using her wishes for the benefit of Konan (not herself), and she's ''supposed'' to treat her warriors and her attendant with respect. Does she? No. She also spreads vicious rumors about Miaka.
* ParentalAbandonment: Supposed to be her FreudianExcuse, as her parents are about to split up ''very'' messily. Comes off more as {{Wangst}} to Westerners, [[ValuesDissonance who aren't necessarily aware of the HUGE social stigma coming from divorce in Japan.]]
* PrayerOfMalice: Is tricked into using this to facilitate the destruction of Konan.
* PrimalFear: Being killed by Taka via a TraumaticCSection. This is what motivates her to pray to [[spoiler: Fake!]]Suzaku for the destruction of Konan.
* {{Shorttank}}: Short-haired, tomboyish, athletic...
* StraightEdgeEvil: Doesn't drink or smoke, and is (considering that she summoned Suzaku) presumably a virgin, but still quite depraved.
* TakeThatAudience: She was created as a response the series' fans who expressed desires to become priestesses and get hot boyfriends for themselves.
* TeenPregnancy: Is 16 years old at the time of her MysticalPregnancy in the book.
* ThisLoserIsYou: Supposed to be a symbol of human weakness, especially in [[LoveMakesYouCrazy matters of the heart]].
* TraumaticCSection: Is threatened with this.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler: For the fake Suzaku.]]
* VillainProtagonist: By sheer virtue of how horrible she is.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gets this from Tamahome and from Boushin.
* WouldHurtAChild: She threatens to '''kill Miaka and Taka's unborn baby''' if Taka doesn't do her bidding. Also attempts to murder [[spoiler:a baby reincarnated Chiriko]] and reacts in rage when it fails.
* {{Yandere}}: Threatens murdering Miaka and Taka's unborn baby just so she can have Taka to herself.

!! General tropes for Madoka Ootori and Misaki Himuro

* {{Expy}}: Of Miaka and Yui. [[spoiler: Though Misaki is not taken back to Japan after she and Madoka get swallowed inside the book.]]
** In Madoka's case, WordOfGod says that the game manufacturers created her as Miaka's replacement because they thought that it would be contradicting for Miaka to be the main character in the game as, in the original media, [[OfficialCouple she was only deemed to love Tamahome.]]
* SailorFuku: Madoka and Misaki's school uniforms look like Western ones, but the collars look a ''lot'' like those of a ''seifuku''.
* SheCleansUpNicely:
** Madoka, as the PlayerCharacter who becomes the Suzaku no Miko, looks really nice in the Miko robes that Miaka wore in the manga/series. She also looks super cute when she wears [[spoiler: normal Chinese robes in the "Staying Behind" endings]], or when she's [[spoiler: in a [[WeddingsInJapan Western wedding gown]] in Mitsukake's "Reincarnation Ending".]]
** Misaki is also seen in really nice clothes when, just like Yui, she's appointed as the Seiryuu no Miko.

!! Madoka Ootori
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/24_7.jpg]]

The protagonist of the ''Suzaku Ibun'' game, she finds herself lost in the Universe of the Four Gods with her friend Misaki. After Tamahome rescues her from some thugs and helps her escape after she was imprisoned, she learns that Misaki has disappeared. Madoka agrees to become the priestess of Suzaku to find her friend and return home.
----
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Madoka's main goal is getting Misaki back no matter what.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: The normally short-haired Madoka is seen with far longer hair [[spoiler: in Nuriko's Reincarnation Ending.]]
* {{Expy}}: Of Miaka, in terms of disliking studying and being lazy about it, being rescued by Tamahome and becoming the priestess of Suzaku. She does adapt quite faster to her Suzaku no Miko role.
* FixFic: The player can sorta pull this through Madoka, since depending on their actions they can make her [[spoiler: prevent the deaths of the Suzaku Senshi who kick in in the original (Nuriko and Chiriko included)]] or [[spoiler: keep Amiboshi from falling into the river...]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Madoka's uniform's collar and ribbon is red, indicating her becoming the priestess of Suzaku.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She and Misaki are best friends and Tamahome even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] that they seem more like sisters to each other than friends.
* LapPillow: She can do this to Chiriko, [[spoiler: but only if the player does NOT manage to save him.]]
* MeaningfulName: Her last name is spelled with the kanji for ''Female Phoenix''. Ootori means Big Bird.
* PsychicPowers: She has an ability known as ''Danger/Death Perception'', which is basically a sort-of SpiderSense that lets her sense when her loved ones are threatened.
* MultipleEndings: This being basically a DatingSim, the players can give Madoka more than one ending. This includes: "Normal Ending" (few love points with anyone), "Friendship Ending" (Misaki has the most points), [[StarCrossedLovers Disappointing Love Ending]] (Madoka gets a guy to love her but must go back home without him since their love points aren't enough), [[spoiler: "[[ReincarnationRomance Reincarnation Ending]]" (Madoka has enough points with her beau to [[LoveTranscendsSpacetime get him to be reincarnated]] a la Taka Sukunami), and [[IChooseToStay "Staying Behind Ending]]" (if the player unlocks a certain scene ''and'' also gets Madoka enough love points with a boyfriend, one can choose between the Reincarnation Ending and a new one where she stays in the Book with her beloved).]]
* PlayerCharacter: Madoka, as the girl who takes Miaka's "place" in the ''Suzaku Ibun'' game.
* ShowerOfAwkward: A sort-of RunningGag that happens once per route is having Madoka trying to take a bath and then seeing one of the guys naked. Including [[AttractiveBentGender Nuriko]], excluding [[AdorablyPrecociousChild Chiriko.]]
* YourUniverseOrMine: [[spoiler: If she has enough affection with a Suzaku Warrior, she can ask Suzaku to either have the warrior be reborn into her world or make it so that she can remain with him in the Universe of the Four Gods. [[GuideDangIt It's easier said than done, however]].]]

The antagonistic priestess of the ''Suzaku Ibun'' game, she's best friends with Madoka. When the two are studying, Madoka finds the Universe of the Four Gods and both find themselves in Kounan. When some thugs try to pick them up, Misaki tells Madoka to run away by herself and Misaki will bait them to help her. After Tamahome helps her get away from the thugs, Misaki gets taken by some men to Kutou, where she becomes the priestess of Seiryu.
----
* {{Expy}}: Of Yui. She's best friends with Madoka, both land in Kounan at the same time and get rescued by Tamahome. Misaki eventually becomes the priestess of Seiryu and Madoka's enemy.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Her becoming the priestess of Seiryu is foreshadowed in her uniform, which is identical to Madoka's, except her collar and ribbon are blue.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: She and Madoka are best friends and Tamahome even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] that they seem more like sisters to each other than friends.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Misaki has long hair, contrasting with Yui's boyish haircut as well as Madoka's own.
