The bearer of the Element of Honesty. An earth pony from the ''huge'' Apple family, a herd that runs multiple apple farms across Equestria. Applejack helps run Sweet Apple Acres, the ancestral farm of the family. Sensible and down to earth, she's admired for her honesty and integrity. However, she also has a bit of a stubborn streak at times. Her Pillar of Old Equestria is Rockhoof.

[[folder:Tropes A to H]]
* AdaptationalBadass: Compared to the G1 [[TheKlutz Applejack]], this version is far more heroic and awesome in terms of character.
* AffectionateNickname: She sometimes calls her closest friends "sugarcube".
* AmbiguouslyGay: Unlike the rest of the mane cast (aside from [[TheOneGuy Spike]]), has no really noticeable ShipTease with any male characters and is totally uninterested when she ''does'' get a stallion's attention (though to be fair, it's [[InnocentBigot Trenderhoof]]). By contrast, her VitriolicBestBuds dynamic with Rarity and Rainbow Dash nudges dangerously close to BelligerentSexualTension at times [[note]]in fact, Rarity and Applejack's ''Equestria Girls'' counterparts were intentionally written as a couple for the last few specials, albeit subtly so[[/note]]. [[spoiler:"The Last Problem" reintroduces her [[DistantFinale after the events of the show]] bickering with Rainbow Dash about chores LikeAnOldMarriedCouple, with crew members confirming they were written that way on purpose.]]
* AndIMustScream: In the two-parter episode, "The Return Of Harmony", [[spoiler:she is the first victim of Discord's brainwashing, which turns her into a compulsive liar. After Twilight freed her from the spell, she said that she knew what she was doing but she couldn't face the truth.]]
* AntiMentor: When tasked by Twilight to work with Rainbow Dash to teach students on teamwork, both she and Rainbow end up falling into this thanks to their inability to work together without making even the act of teaching a competition.
* ArchEnemy: She has this dynamic with the Flim-Flam Brothers. Her dedication to honesty is a direct contrast to their ConArtist ways, leading to her clashing with them numerous times, and thus holding an extreme dislike for the two of them.
* BadBadActing: Justified, for the same reasons she's a BadLiar. On full display in "Spike at Your Service" where she ''badly'' fakes being attacked.
-->'''Applejack:''' ''[unconvincingly]'' Oh no! I seem to have got my hoof caught in between two rocks! I cannot run away! I am a damsel in distress! Help me, Spike! ''[sticks her head in puppet timberwolf's mouth]''
* {{Badbutt}}: Like Rainbow Dash, she's portrayed as being a rough-and-tumble ActionGirl, but the all-ages nature of the show keeps it from going too far.
* BadLiar: Befitting the Element of Honesty, Applejack isn't one to lie, but when she does, she's ''terrible'' at hiding it. In "Party of One," despite her excuses technically being true, she puts on a giant fake smile for Pinkie. [[spoiler:In "The Return of Harmony", after Discord brainwashes her into being a compulsive liar, she bites her lip and averts her eyes after every lie.]] "Where the Apple Lies" reveals that [[spoiler:she wasn't ''always'' honest when she was younger. As told by Granny Smith, playing this trope endangered her family and business, and would lead Applejack to be the honest pony she is today]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She is typically a very friendly and welcoming individual who will try her best to help you in anyway she can should you ask her. However, she also has a very high moral code and should you break it she will show you just how deadly an athletic KickChick pony with SuperStrength and a lasso can be.
* BigEater:
** Applejack's heavy farm chores burn a lot of energy, so she is used to eating a lot of food. This is made explicit when she lives with her Orange relatives in high-society Manehattan and is baffled at the minuscule food servings they're used to eating there.
** In "Apple Family Reunion", Granny Smith says that Applejack had an appetite of a full-grown stallion even as a little foal, eating an entire tray of fritters by herself in seconds.
* BigSisterInstinct: To Apple Bloom. Applejack is very protective of her little sister, trying to keep her away from danger, but can become overbearing.
* BigSisterMentor: Much like Twilight, Applejack often provides guidance to the CMC, but most often with Apple Bloom, who ''is'' her little sister.
* BookDumb:
** In [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS1E4ApplebuckSeason "Applebuck Season"]], she criticizes Big Macintosh for bringing numbers into their conversation.
--->'''Applejack:''' This is your sister Applejack, remember? The loyalest of friends and most dependable of ponies?\
'''Big Macintosh:''' But still only ''one'' pony and one pony plus ''hundreds'' of apple trees just doesn't add up to...\
'''Applejack:''' Don't you use your fancy mathematics to muddy the issue!
** She describes most things which aren't the stuff of salt-of-the-earth ordinary farm life as "fancy". For example, in "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E6TheCutiePox The Cutie Pox]]", when Apple Bloom starts speaking French, Applejack proclaims she's "speakin' in fancy".
* BoringButPractical: Her love of apples and her AppealToTradition are just the tip of this iceberg.
* BrokenAce: Often plays this in her spotlight episodes. She's incredibly gifted and relied on frequently by the rest of Ponyville; because of this she cannot take failing someone even in the most understandable of circumstances and works herself ragged trying to please everyone above her capabilities. Similar to Rainbow Dash, her arrogance can perk up and hinder things at times as well.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: True to her "cowgirl" demeanor, Applejack is a rowdy and assertive CuteBruiser, but ultimately friendly and rational-minded.
* BrutalHonesty: As the Element of Honesty, moments like this are to be expected. In "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E9HonestApple Honest Apple]]", Applejack [[AnAesop learns just how bad this can be]]. When Rarity makes her a judge for a fashion show she's hosting, believing that Applejack's honesty keeps a level of practicality present. But Applejack starts becoming ''too honest'' with her opinions until they just become hurtful, and she crosses a line when she says "fashion is ridiculous." She realizes her error shortly afterward when Strawberry Sunrise insults apples.
* BuffySpeak: Not quite as bad as Rainbow Dash, but she definitely qualifies. She often stutters when speaking about subjects she doesn't understand or when she is confused. Her "countryisms" could qualify too as she sometimes just puts words together in a country accent, even if they aren't real words.
* BusmansVocabulary: As a farm pony, she frequently uses [[TalksLikeASimile farming-themed similes and metaphors]], many of which involve apples; in "The Cutie Map Part 2", she calls them "countryisms", and there appears to be a connection between her ability to make "countryisms" and her other farming talents, since she loses her ability to talk like that when her cutie mark's taken away.
* ByNoIMeanYes: In [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyTheMovie2017 the movie]], Rarity complains that Rainbow Dash's attempts at helping with decorations are only acceptable "if you were raised in a barn"... and then offers a "No offense" to farm-girl Applejack. Applejack says she wasn't raised in a barn, so no, offense was taken, but then has to amend herself to mention that she did in fact spend a significant portion of her childhood being, well, raised in a barn.
-->'''Applejack:''' None taken. Especially since I wasn't raised in a barn. My family just happens to have a barn. Where I was born. And... spent most of my formative years.
* CallToAgriculture: She turned down the fancy life in Manehattan to return to Sweet Apple Acres, and hasn't regretted it once.
* CantTakeCriticism: She is very sensitive when criticized, as shown in a few episodes of the show. It probably has to do with her stubborn nature.
* TheCassandra: She'll often point out to the other Mane Six whenever they attempt to lie to spare another's feelings that it's always best to tell someone the truth as soon as possible than [[SnowballLie to continue having to maintain a lie]]. Comes to a head in "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS9E17TheSummerSunSetback The Summer Sun Setback]]" when they attempt to hide from Twilight the truth that the celebrations have been massively damaged, throwing her hat on the ground in frustration.
-->'''Applejack:''' I told y'all this was a bad idea, but nopony ever listens to me!
* CastAsAMask: [[spoiler:Several of the voices she used in the ''Best Gift Ever'' short "Mystery Voice" were actually provided by Shannon Chan-Kent, Cathy Weseluck and Andrea Libman rather than Ashleigh Ball.]]
* CelibateHero: She doesn't seem to care for romance at all and thinks it's silly that Trender Hoof has feelings for her. Justified, because Applejack's MarriedToTheJob.
* CharacterCatchphrase: She tends to shout "Yee-Haw!" every now and then. She also says "What in tarnation?" when she smells a fishy situation. Sometimes she also says "Absolutely Not!"
* CharacterDevelopment:
** In "Applebuck Season", she is determined to complete her workload all by herself, with no help from her friends at all. She learns her lesson, and in "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000", she is more than willing to accept her friends' help. The lesson is shown to stick two seasons later when she asks for their help in "Apple Family Reunion", but ''still'' went overboard in trying to make the reunion perfect instead, thus giving herself a different sort of lesson to learn.
** In something that leans between this and CharacterizationMarchesOn, Applejack has significantly mellowed out between seasons; in Season One a lot of her dilemmas were fueled by her short temper and tendency to be easily offended.
** She has grown more into the role of TeamMom, making her the second-most-likely (after Rarity) to pick up on the subtle social cues which reveal that somepony is having a hard time.
** Also her softening OddFriendship with Rarity herself, with both characters gaining an increasing open-mindedness and patience for their very different ethics and mannerisms.
* ChildhoodFriends: In "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS5E24TheManeAttraction The Mane Attraction]]", she first knew [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicOneShots Coloratura]] since childhood.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: A more mundane example than Rainbow Dash, but equally defining. Applejack is renowned for her reliability throughout Ponyville, providing help where ever she can. It is this status that leads her to sometimes exhaust herself in her devotion to others.
* TheCityVsTheCountry: Sometime after her parents passed away, Applejack decided to move in with her Aunt and Uncle Orange to the Cosmopolitan city of Manehattan since she didn't want to spend all her life in a "boring old farm" but upon realizing that she didn't like her relatives' lifestyle and how much she missed her grandmother, Big Mac and the farm life she immediately went back to the farm, which made her earn her cutie mark.
* TheClan: The Apple Family, a large and widespread family of farming ponies [[ThemeNaming almost all of whom are named after apples]] and who maintain close ties to one another. Besides Applejack herself, the most notable members in the show are Granny Smith, Apple Bloom and Big Macintosh, who live with her on the farm, but many others are mentioned or seen over the course of the show:
** Her cousin Braeburn lives out in the Wild West town of Appleloosa; another cousin, Babs Seed, lives in [[BigApplesauce Manehattan]] and is around Apple Bloom's age; an elderly Uncle Apple Strudel is also seen a few times, who between his name, huge handlebar mustache and Tyrolean hat seems to come from the pony equivalent of YodelLand.
** The family is apparently old enough that it needs a dedicated historian, in the form of Cousin Goldie Delicious, who keeps track of the clan's extensive genealogy, feuds and such.
** Besides the main ones, numerous incidental Apple Family members are mentioned and seen in family reunions, like Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Apple Brown Betty, Apple Fritter, etc.
** There's also Aunt and Uncle Orange up in [[BigApplesauce Manehattan]] but let's not compare [[MeaningfulName Apples and Oranges]].
** Even Pinkie Pie ''may'' be related as a very distant cousin, but this is left deliberately ambiguous -- the relevant part of the genealogical tree was too smudged to read by the time Applejack and Pinkie looked it up.
* TheComicallySerious: Not as often as Twilight, but her gruffness and straight-faced demeanor sometimes play her into this. She ''is'' a cowgirl, after all.
* CompanionCube: Treats one of her apple trees, Bloomberg, as one of her own children.
* CompetitionFreak: Not ''quite'' as bad as Rainbow Dash, but her brashness provokes this hard at times, especially against the former.
* CompositeCharacter: Has a few elements of [[Characters/MyLittlePonyAndFriendsPoniesAndAllies Truly from G1]], such as having a southern American accent, wearing a hat at almost all times and being stubborn at times, mixed with aspects of G1 Applejack.
* ConflictBall: Despite often acting as the voice of reason, she arguably has the largest number of {{Feud Episode}}s with another pony, most often with [[CommanderContrarian Rainbow Dash]]. This is what leads Twilight to so quickly assume that the two are fighting [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E3LessonZero at one point]].
* CoolAunt: In the DistantFinale, [[spoiler: her brother's son running to her for a hug as soon as he sees her indicates they have a very good relationship]].
* CoolBigSis:
** Often plays this role to Apple Bloom. She absolutely adores her little sister and is really good at showing it, though sometimes she can go [[MyBelovedSmother a little too far with it...]]
** Her sisterly attitude also applies to Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle. In "Sisterhooves Social", she cheers up Sweetie Belle after her fight with Rarity and races with her in the obstacle course ([[spoiler:actually, that was Rarity in disguise, but Applejack still helped with the plan]]), and in "Sleepless in Ponyville", she expresses concern for Scootaloo after noticing that the filly is abnormally tired.
%%* CoolCar: Her Farm Truck from the toys (the PeripheryDemographic may not think so, but it wasn't meant to appeal to them).%%ZCE -- cool how?
* CountryCousin: To Pinkie, [[AmbiguouslyRelated maybe]]. The family chart lists her as "Country Fourth Cousin Twice Removed" but the wording is too smudged to be sure.
* CountryMouse: According to "The Cutie Mark Chronicles", it was visiting her CityMouse aunt and uncle that helped her realize that she belonged on the farm.
* CountryMusic: Turns out she's quite proficient with [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E26ACanterlotWeddingPart2 the fiddle,]] [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS4E9PinkieApplePie the banjo,]] [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS4E17SomeponyToWatchOverMe the flute]] [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS5E24TheManeAttraction and the guitar.]]
* CuteBruiser: Or GlacierWaif depending on the episode. Can be one of the faster or slower ponies but always the physically strongest and heaviest. During Rainbow Dash's "Hot Minute", she admitted that if she and Applejack really raced each other strictly on the ground (presumably meaning if Rainbow Dash didn't try to cheat by using her wings like during "Fall Weather Friends"), Applejack might've beaten her.
%% Deadpan Snarker does not apply to Applejack, as she is non-sarcastic far more often than sarcastic. If you disagree take it to the following thread: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1331473451059167100&page=7#173
* {{Determinator}}: She becomes this especially if[=/=]when her stubbornness gets the better of her...particularly in "Applebuck Season".
* EdibleAmmunition: She planned to kick some of her apples at the dragon in the episode "Dragonshy".
* EraSpecificPersonality: ''Friendship Is Magic'''s Applejack is one of Ponyville's best athletes. Her First Gen counterpart is... [[TheKlutz not]]. G1 Applejack was a Disaster Girl type of character, constantly getting herself in trouble for doing things she was NOT supposed to do, or causing (unintended) mayhem around her, thanks to her clumsiness, HUGE appetite for apples, and her lack of "Horse Sense". Like every other pony, Applejack isn't immune to clumsiness or slapstick. Her athleticism doesn't stop her from continuing the role of IronButtMonkey.
* TheEveryman: She's the most normal of her group of friends, [[OnlySaneByComparison albeit still]] [[StubbornMule by]] [[TheLadette comparison]] [[{{Workaholic}} only]]. This leads to Fridge Brilliance as to why the character has become OutOfFocus or eclipsed in her own episodes; her more reserved personality allows for less potential to trigger plot lines and dilemmas designating her to secondary roles such as TheStraightMan most of the time. [[CharacterizationMarchesOn In the first season]], she was more HotBlooded and arrogant, a likely reason she had more lead roles early on.
* EverybodyHatesMathematics: Zig-zagged.
** Averted in the episodes "Fall Weather Friends" (instantly adding 17 seconds and a 5 second penalty to get 22 seconds as her time for the Barrel Weave) and "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" (she instantly realizes that losing the money from selling cider will cause the farm to go under financially).
** PlayedForLaughs in "Applebuck Season"; when Big Macintosh points out that harvesting the entire orchard is too big a job for one pony, Applejack retorts, "Don't you use your fancy mathematics to muddy the issue!"
** [[ContinuityNod Alluded to]] in "Suited for Success", where she has to count out loud just to figure out that six mares will need six dresses.
* {{Expy}}: For the original Applejack: she's the only main character to entirely retain her name and color scheme from the franchise's first-generation, and a lot of her original incarnation's traits -- chiefly her outdoorsy attitude and love of apples -- are carried across into G4.
* TheFace: The most prominent member of the Apple family in Ponyville due to Big Macintosh's quiet demeanor, Granny Smith's age, and Apple Bloom's youth.
* FamilyBusiness: Growing and selling apples along with all the myriad methods of preparing them. Applejack takes this ''very'' seriously; her primary interest in the Grand Galloping Gala is setting up a stand there.
* FantasticRacism: In the first season, she's very wary towards Zecora, [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything a zebra, and thinks that she's evil because she's unlike any pony she's ever seen]]. Fortunately, [[CharacterDevelopment she grows out of it]] and is only accidentally insensitive to other ponies rather than how she used to be.
* FarmGirl: She's a worker at the rural apple orchard of Sweet Apple Acres, and in the series debut episode, becomes a founder of the Mane Six in Twilight's goal to defeat [[StarterVillain Nightmare Moon]], which would develop into countless more misadventures.
* FascinatingEyebrow: Used no less than three times in the fourth season, twice reacting to a dubious statement from Discord.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric: extroverted, confident and [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS1E4ApplebuckSeason stubborn]].
* TheFriendsWhoNeverHang: Is seen hanging out with every member of the Mane Six from time to time except Fluttershy for some reason. They both get the spotlight in "Viva Las Pegasus" and "Sounds of Silence", though.
* GenreMotif: Country/bluegrass played on banjos or acoustic guitars. She sometimes gets a motif reminiscent of western movie "riding" themes when she gets into action.
* GoodOlBoy: A sympathetic gender swap. Her cowgirl persona and her protectiveness of tradition and heritage come into play a lot in her spotlight moments.
* GirlishPigtails: She wore a pair of pigtails when she was just a little foal.
* GoodOldWays: She's proud to be an Earth pony and believes in doing everything by hoof if at all possible. This puts her occasionally at odds with Twilight, who does almost everything by magic. Sometimes her ways are vindicated as producing the superior product; other times she comes across as inflexible and needlessly stubborn.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Her mane is a dirty blonde color, and she is an honest and kind pony.
* HairTriggerTemper: [[DownPlayedTrope A light example in Season One]]. Big Mac and Twilight soon learned how easy it is to offend the usually chirpy and warm natured AJ. She mellowed out in later seasons.
* HeroesLoveDogs: Has a pet dog named Winona whom she has helping her on the farm and loves.
* HiddenDepths:
** The "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDWIssue15To16 Ponies in Book Land]]" story arc of the IDW comics revealed that apparently Applejack enjoys reading comic books.
** A rather downplayed, understated example would be that she seems to be rather musically inclined. As seen in CountryMusic below, she appears to be able to play several different musical instruments, despite it never really commented on in the show.
* HonestyIsTheBestPolicy: An incident in the past as a BadLiar almost ended with her brother's leg getting sawed off. She has since vowed to always be honest (or as honest as possible). She has, however, managed to work around this without actually lying.
* HonorBeforeReason:
** In "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS1E4ApplebuckSeason Applebuck Season]]", she struggles to keep all of her promises (and turning down help) despite being stretched to her limits. She nearly worked herself to death through exhaustion.
** In "The Last Roundup", she's so ashamed at her failure to win any rodeo events that she decides to start a new life in another town and refuses to return to Ponyville until she earns enough to replace the prize money she failed to win.
* HotBlooded: While still often a voice of clarity, Applejack was more confrontational and short-fused in her earliest appearances and [[ATragedyOfImpulsiveness prone to act before thinking]] (usually with Rainbow Dash or Rarity as a catalyst for her temper). While she's much more reserved in later episodes, [[CharacterCheck she still has evident bouts of this]].
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** In "Ponyville Confidential", Applejack enjoys the embarrassing stories being published in Gabby Gums' gossip column, even brushing off Twilight pointing out that they're being kind of mean, until they publish an embarrassing story about ''her''.
** In "Yakity-Sax", Applejack insists that Pinkie be told the honest truth about her [[DreadfulMusician yovidaphone playing]]. But when the Mane Five confront her, Applejack is unwilling to tell Pinkie herself, starting off a cycle of GotVolunteered by telling Pinkie ''Rarity'' has something to say to her.
** In the ''[[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyBestGiftEver My Little Pony: Best Gift Ever]]'' short "Triple Pony Dare ya", she accuses Rainbow Dash of giving her "lowdown nasty dares". Applejack's own dares involved daring Rainbow to fly as slowly as possible (causing her to almost fall out of the air), and dig holes in the frozen ground like an earth pony (resulting in Rainbow chipping a tooth). In comparison, Rainbow's dares, while mean-spirited, weren't physically harmful for Applejack.
* HypocriticalHumor: In "Applejack's 'Day' Off", Applejack goes on about how the spa ponies got stuck in a routine and didn't even realize they had a problem... while doing her own complex (and no longer necessary) ritual to feed the farm's pigs.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes I to Z]]
* ICallItVera: The ''Best Gift Ever'' short "Triple Pony Dare Ya" reveals that she named her hat "Tallulah".
* InconsistentSpelling: Once in a great while, her name will be spelled as "Apple Jack".
%%* IncredibleShrinkingMan: As a result of the Poison Joke in "Bridle Gossip". %%ZCE
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Utilized with her work overzeal. When given a difficult task, Applejack can be rather pig-headed and arrogant, refusing help from others. Ultimately she is only insecure about her strengths and reliability, and takes letting someone down ''very hard'' (even when the person in question is far less upset about it). Also plays into her TeamMom role; while she is usually kind and forgiving about others' shortcomings, she has great difficulty accepting her own.
* InSeriesNickname: Her name is often shortened to "A.J." in-series.
* InstantKnots: Applejack is an expert with the lasso and is frequently seen using one (or improvising one if she isn't carrying any rope). If she can score a hit with it, it always knots instantly. She also seems able to tie it to ''herself'' instantly (so that she can wield it using her mane or tail).
* IntergenerationalFriendship: In the toys, she has one with toy-exclusive unicorn filly Star Dreams, seeing as they "love having slumber parties together!"
* JackOfAllTrades: In "The Last Roundup", she competed in a national rodeo and, according to Cherry Jubilee, scored in the top four of ''every'' event.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She had moments of this in the early episodes, what with how stubborn and overconfident she could be, before becoming a NiceGirl in later episodes.
* KickChick: Granted she is a pony, but she uses her kick far more than anyone else, especially when she knocks apples off of the trees on her farm. Her kicks are very deadly in combat too.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: She is shown to be very overprotective and strict in protecting Apple Bloom in "Bridle Gossip" and acts extremely paranoid and hostile to Zecora at the thought of her harming her. [[CharacterizationMarchesOn This trait is toned down in most later episodes]], where she is more of a CoolBigSis.
* TheLadette: Applejack cringes at the thought of wearing ''excessively'' feminine clothing, like what she was forced to wear in "Look Before You Sleep." She regularly lapses into crude and aggressive behavior and won't hesitate to charge into action when needed. [[DownplayedTrope However, her overall sensibility and maturity distances her from this trope a bit]].
* TheLancer: Applejack seems to be taking on this role, which isn't a big surprise, given that she seems to have been TheHero before Twilight.
* LightningBruiser: In addition to being very strong, her running speed seems to be on par with Rainbow Dash's, to the point where [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02WCSLeb3IA Rainbow herself]] admitted that it's possible for Applejack to beat her in a hoof-race.
* ManOfAThousandVoices: [[spoiler:In ''The Best Gift Ever'' short, "Mystery Voice", it is revealed that Applejack can use a variety of voices without speaking in her country accent.]]
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Applejack has to pause to catch her breath when she introduces her cousins to Twilight Sparkle.
* MasterOfNone: What Applejack ''thought'' she was in "The Last Roundup", which was the source of her personal drama for the episode.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:"The Last Problem" leaves it vague as to whether or not she and Rainbow Dash are together. At first the crew said that it's left up to viewer interpretation but [[https://derpibooru.org/images/2642528 later sources]] do confirm outright that they were purposefully written to be a couple.]]
* MeaningfulName:
** Unlike her previous incarnations, "Apple" refers to her FamilyBusiness of apple harvesting and its many, ''many'' uses. "Jack" may refer to a jack-of-all-trades; i.e. someone who can do a lot of different things but isn't a specialist.
** Applejack or apple-brandy is a high-proof beverage distilled from cider. It has something of a [[KickChick kick]] to it ([=FiM=]) and also tends to result in [[TheKlutz less-than-optimal coordination and judgment]] (G1).
* MeetMyGoodFriendsLeftyAndRighty: She calls her back legs ''Bucky [=McGillicuddy=]'' (her left one) and ''Kicks [=McGee=]'' (her right one).
* MetaphoricallyTrue: She's the Element of Honesty, but that doesn't mean she has to tell the ''whole'' truth.
* MsViceGirl:
** Applejack's stubbornness helps when she's in a tough spot, but it also gets her in trouble on a regular basis, most notably in "Applebuck Season" where she refuses to admit that she needs help, and when it interferes in attempts to negotiate with the Buffalo in "Over A Barrel".
** In the first season, she had a short temperament, often getting over-defensive or vindictive with someone she believes has insulted or provoked her. She is clearly more level headed than Rainbow Dash and Rarity, though still ended up in a vicious EscalatingWar with both after they wound her up. She also snapped at Big Macintosh and Twilight after they accidentally offended her, driving the latter to tears ([[JerkassRealization her reactions]] after both suggest she was aware she put her hoof in her mouth). This is far less evident in later seasons, where she is more level-headed.
* NeverBareheaded: Even in formal attire, she either sports a variation of her cowboy hat or sneaks the original onto her head as soon as she gets a chance. Averted in the toys, where she is almost never seen ''with'' a hat, and during her flashbacks in "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" and "Where the Apple Lies".
* NiceGirl: Similar to Twilight, she holds the JerkassBall a fair few times, but she is one of the more fair-natured ponies and even her more abrasive moments are often with more selfless intentions than the others. In earlier episodes, she's slightly more arrogant, [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold if still altruistic]].
* NumberTwo: In episodes where all Mane Six are facing a common problem, Applejack often falls into the role of a second-in-command to Twilight.
* OddFriendship: With Rarity. A down-to-earth, rough and tumble farm girl and a refined, elegant proper lady. Rarity is the pony Applejack arguably has the closest friendship with.
* OnlySaneWoman: When Twilight and Spike aren't this, it's usually her.
* OutOfFocus: Compared to the rest of the Mane Six, while Applejack is often a supporting character in episodes focusing on someone else or the entire group, she has the least amount of solo-focus episodes. Additionally, most of the rest of the cast have or eventually get an ongoing story arc (Rainbow Dash wanting to be a Wonderbolt, Rarity expanding her business, etc.), but Applejack doesn't; she knows the family farm is where she wants to be and she is perfectly happy to live out her life there. This is lampshaded in the final season, when Pinkie Pie is upset she hasn't had a StoryArc to complete like the rest of the group, and in listing their "destinies" they've achieved, she says Applejack's is her hat, then corrects "and the farm!". Ironically, out of the entire cast of characters, she appears in a speaking role in episodes the most out of everyone, even Twilight herself.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS3E9AppleFamilyReunion Potentially implied]] and later [[WordOfSaintPaul semi-confirmed]] that her parents are dead. Granny Smith is the only parental figure Applejack and her siblings have. This is eventually acknowledged in [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS5E19CrusadersOfTheLostMark Crusaders of the Lost Mark]] when Applejack mentions how [[SoProudOfYou proud their parents would be of Applebloom]]. The dialogue leaves things a ''little'' ambiguous, but death is very heavily implied. "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E13ThePerfectPear The Perfect Pear]]" pretty much confirms that they died; we just don't know how. [[invoked]]
* PatchworkKids: Has her grandmother's blond hair, her mother's orange coat, and her father's green eyes and freckles.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: She may not be particularly big, but she has no problem moving several carts of apples bigger than she is at the same time. Exaggerated in "Shadow Play", when she kicks away a boulder the size of a small house.
* PopCulturalOsmosisFailure: She lacks interest in pop culture, as shown by her not having heard of Countess Coloratura.
* PrehensileTail: Her tail is fully capable of grabbing objects. She uses it to do lasso tricks!
* {{Pride}}: Has a stubborn streak miles wide and hates backing down from any challenge. Also dangerous when fused with her strong sense of justice. When she believes another comrade is acting unfairly, she can become rather self-righteous, and get riled up in her attempts to discipline them.
* PromotionToParent: She sometimes acts as a mother figure toward her little sister Apple Bloom, since their mother Pear Butter is not present (and is implied to be dead). In "Bloom and Gloom", she reassures Apple Bloom over her cutie mark-related worries and sings her a lullaby before she goes to sleep.
-->'''Applejack:''' ''Hush now little sister, you're loved by all you know,\
You'll never lose their friendship, no matter where you go.\
There ain't no call to worry, so don't you cry or fret;\
A cutie mark won't change you, no matter what you get.''
* RaisedByGrandparents: An SDCC interview with the MLP panel revealed that the absence of Applejack's parents is "[[VerySpecialEpisode an important lesson for kids that may happen]], but they have some trepidation on how carefully they would need to handle something like that."
* RedOniBlueOni:
** She can be both depending on the situation. Typically, she's the stubborn Red Oni to Rarity and the down-to-earth and levelheaded Blue Oni to Rainbow Dash.
** She's also the Red Oni to her brother, TheStoic and calm Big Mac.
* TheReliableOne: Famed for this in Ponyville. Though it sadly came to [[TakingAdvantageOfGenerosity bite her back]] [[ChronicHeroSyndrome a couple of times]].
* RightlySelfRighteous: Being the HotBlooded StraightMan, she sometimes acts like this. Similar to Twilight however, she has the occasional vice of getting a bit ''too'' arrogant about it at times, usually at the cost of her pedestal.
* TheRival: She has a recurring ([[CompetitionFreak usually]]) [[FriendlyRivalry friendly]] competitive streak with Rainbow Dash. While this decreased in prominence after the early seasons, later episodes -- such as "Castle Mane-ia" and "Non-Compete Clause" -- still feature their rivalry fairly prominently.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: She thinks this way, especially in "The Last Roundup". She ribboned in every single event from second to four (far more than anyone else) but considers herself a failure because she didn't get 1st in any of them.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: In "Leap of Faith", Applejack finds herself torn when Granny Smith begins using a tonic provided by the Flim Flam Brothers that is said to heal any injured or sick. Upon realizing the tonic is fake, she tries to keep it a secret and lies about its efforts, but guilt soon took hold and tells the truth. Silver Shill, one of those who worked with Flim and Flam, is inspired by Applejack's honesty, and gives her the single bit they gave him, which turns into her key to the Chest of Harmony.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Her dinner with her rich relatives in Manehattan proves this, as does every occasion on which she dons formal attire. "Simple Ways" shows that she can be downright gorgeous if she wants to (which isn't often).
* ShesAManInJapan: In the Macedonian dub, she and Rainbow Dash are both male.
* SignatureHeadgear: Her brown cowboy hat is an iconic part of her appearance, especially since she's the only one of the Mane Six who regularly wears any kind of headgear. She even has a closet full of replacement hats in case something happens to the one she's wearing.
* SpiritedCompetitor: Competitive and loves to win but the focus is on sportsmanship; 'wings are cheating' fueled an episode.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: In season two she and her family have more screen time than any of the other mane cast, ''even Twilight''. On the other hoof, she has more minor roles in most season two episodes, [[OvershadowedByAwesome even her own centric episodes often give another character an equally prominent role]]. In contrast to the first season, she was a leading character in several episodes.
* StealthPun:
** She has her mane tied up in a ribbon to make her hair into a low ponytail. Her ''actual'' ponytail is styled the same way.
** She's the Element of Honesty and the tough one of the lot, making her the embodiment of BrutalHonesty.
** She's a pony who's a workaholic, which makes her a literal workhorse.
* StepfordSmiler: During a sad moment in [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS5E5TanksForTheMemories "Tanks for the Memories"]] Pinkie claims that Applejack, one of the only ones who doesn't appear to be upset, "cries on the inside". Applejack calmly agrees.
* TheStoic: She tends to underexpress her emotions, particularly fear or sadness. [[NotSoStoic Although she does visibly cry]] [[TearsOfJoy when truly moved]] or when her plans have gone horribly wrong.
* StraightMan: Generally one of the more sensible, level-headed members of the group, she often falls into this role. Though like everyone else she gets her turn to be [[NotSoAboveItAll a silly pony]]. See below.
* StubbornMule: Once she has decided something, her mind is completely locked on the matter and there's no way possible to make her reconsider, especially when her HonorBeforeReason trait gets combined with it. To drive the point home, right after having a frustrating conversation with Applejack, Twilight strikes up a short conversation with a mule who unlike Applejack, is very polite and understanding.
* SuperStrength: As an earth pony, she naturally has this ability but her years of hard work on the farm have made her much, much more powerful than an average one. That being said, she still isn't quite as strong as her older brother.
* SupremeChef: Shown to be an excellent baker when it comes to dishes made with apples. Do ''not'' ask her to bake when she's sleep-deprived, though, [[LethalChef or the results will be disastrous]].
* SweetBaker: Applejack is a downplayed example, being a kind and loyal TeamMom who likes to bake some apple-themed baked goods.
* TeamMom: Highlighted in "Dragonshy", where she demonstrates saintlike patience with Fluttershy's severe timidness. She is also frequently the one shepherding the Cutie Mark Crusaders around, again with saintlike patience.
* TerribleArtist: In "Magical Mystery Cure", when Applejack gets Rarity's cutie mark and becomes convinced that her special talent is sewing fancy dresses, she's awful at it.
* ThemeNaming: Applejack and all of her relatives are named after different types of apples and apple-related items. The only exceptions are Uncle and Aunt Orange in Manehattan as well as [[spoiler:her late mother Pear Butter]].
* {{Tomboy}}: She's brash and aggressive at times and doesn't care too much about her appearance.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl:
** Visually, she's the {{Tomboy}} to her sister Apple Bloom's GirlyGirl because of the hat versus hair bow thing.
** Also is the {{Tomboy}} to Rarity's GirlyGirl. This contrast is the focus for a number of their plots.
* TomboyishPonytail: A VisualPun. She sports a low ponytail fitting for an easy-going {{Tomboy}} like her.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: While she hates anything too frilly or "frou-frou", she was okay with wearing her Gala dress, and has no problem with going to the spa or participating in fashion shows. Plus, she's the TeamMom.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She likes to have apples and apple-related treats.
* UndyingLoyalty: Applejack is loyal to her friends and family to a fault, and has shown to have little care for her own well being when trying to help them. Often a driving force in her trademark stubbornness is the thought of letting down those around her as well as herself.
* UnkemptBeauty: Several episodes, most notably "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS4E13SimpleWays Simple Ways]]" present her as this.
* VisualPun: Not only does Applejack wear her mane in a ponytail, she also has her tail in that style. Get it? Pony tail ponytail?
* VitriolicBestBuds: With both Rainbow Dash (as an athletic rival) and Rarity (with their clashing fashion sense, or lack thereof in Applejack's case).
* VoiceChangeling: [[spoiler:The ''Best Gift Ever'' short "Mystery Voice" shows her as this, able to take on several different voices while making announcements over the School of Friendship's PA system.]]
* VocalEvolution: Her voice was a little higher-pitched in the first few episodes and has gotten deeper over time. This was intentional on Ashleigh Ball's part as she felt Applejack and Rainbow Dash (the other main character she voices) sounded too similar and wanted to separate the two a little.
* {{Workaholic}}: To the point that it nearly kills her. Instead, she was ''merely'' sleep-deprived, exhausted, and seeing double.
* YouthfulFreckles: She has prominent freckles even as a grown mare, but she had even more as a filly.
