[[folder: Team 5]]

When Naruto passed the Academy exam at his [[TitleDrop first try]], he ended up on a different Genin team.

!!Tropes applied to Team 5:
* ChildhoodFriends: Suzume and Satoshi were friends since childhood, and both knew Tetsuo from visiting Satoshi's aunt.
* FreudianTrio
** TheKirk - Suzume
** TheMcCoy - Naruto [[spoiler:and Hiro, briefly.]]
** TheSpock - Satoshi
* InSeriesNickname: Naruto calls Satoshi and Suzume "The Kami Twins" for their similar beginning names. And of course Naruto's own moniker, "Little Thief."
* {{Nepotism}}: Tetsuo couldn't fail Naruto and his team in the Genin Exam because Satoshi is his wife's favorite cousin and her extended family would be displeased if he did.
* OriginalCharacter: All of them excluding Naruto.
* SiblingTropes:
* ThemeNaming: Lampshaded when Naruto ended up on Team 5 - he was wistful that his family name didn't start with "Kami" to match Satoshi and Suzume's.
* TrueCompanions: They may argue a lot, but none could deny the bond they all share.

!!Naruto Uzumaki
The main character, assigned to Tetsuo's Team 5 to ensure his passing the Graduation Exam. Under Tetsuo, he undergoes rapid growth as a ninja.

* AffectionateNickname: The Konoha ninja refer to him as the "Little Thief", due to how his seal siphons chakra from the Kyuubi into his own supply.
* AlmightyJanitor: Naruto. In fact, Konoha's ninja population show frustration at how he wasn't able to earn the Chuunin position he was rightfully worthy of, thanks to what happened in the Kiri exams, which led to his teammates being promoted earlier and his needing to wait. [[spoiler:In "Team 7", he's finally promoted by Tsunade for his performance in the Konoha Chuunin Exams.]]
** In ''Team Tetsuo'' he gets his chance [[spoiler: when Tetsuo arranges for him to fill in for Kabuto for the Suna Winter Exams.]]
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Naruto started as as this, due to being two years junior and a BrattyHalfPint. However, Suzume and Satoshi seem to have found him endearing rather than aggravating.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: His ReasonYouSuckSpeech, directed at Sakura, shows he's not going to take her crap anymore. He gets along with her reasonaby well (relatively speaking anyway) when she's ''not'' causing trouble for him or being an idiot.
* BreakTheCutie: Most of his background, and that’s not taking in his shinobi life..
* BrokenAce: A highly respected and competent ninja, but suffered from PTSD. He slowly is overcoming it due to receiving therapy and his good relationships with his [[TrueCompanions friends.]]
** Although Naruto isn't a conventional example of TheAce, anyway - he developed into one after a lucky early graduation and receiving a proper instructor who developed his skills.
* CombatPragmatist: Absolutely hates fighting without rigging the battlefield first. If he's had time to deploy a full load of traps he can punch way beyond his weight class.
* CrazyPrepared: Brought black market Academy textbooks to a hiking trip and compared them to the ones at the Academy to verify their contents in ''Team Tetsuo''.
** Though in this case it's less crazy prepared and more conveniently lucky, as the only reason he had said textbooks was because he asked his kleptomaniac former teammate to water his plants for him, and decided the best method of protecting his things from said teammate was to just take literally everything of value he owned with him. Which, in its own way, loops back around to being crazy prepared.
* DumbassNoMore: He is much smarter than when he started, learning how to research and read between the lines although his situational awareness hasn't improved much.
* GreenThumb: Grows plants as a hobby and has a greenhouse growing out-of-season fruits and vegetables.
* GuileHero: Two years of additional experience plus mentoring under Tetsuo turned Naruto in this, making deals and compromises to get out of bad situations.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Tetsuo turns Naruto's pranking skills into a [[TrapMaster trapping speciality.]]
* IcyBlueEyes: Konohamaru and Sakura perceive him with these after they meet him after the disastrous Kiri Exams.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Has these at first, until he becomes a ShellShockedVeteran. He's then quite apt at the above trope.
* {{Irony}}: Naruto admires [[ManipulativeBastard Madara]] for his trapping expertise and reads his books.
* JackOfAllStats: Trapping specialty aside, most of his abilities are high but balanced, unlike [[CripplingOverspecialisation Sasuke.]] While he can't beat the latter in a taijutsu bout even after 2 years out in the field, in a real (read: all the abilities at his disposal) fight he'd pummel him.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Invoked in ''Team 7:Divergance'' after [[spoiler: all the Sannin die, Orochimaru and Tsunade by Jiraiya's hand and Jiraiya by his own]]. The new Hokage Hiashi Hyuuga and Danzo know with [[spoiler: the Sannin dead]], Konoha is at risk because the Sannin were deterrents and now their enemies think Konoha is weak. With the ninja force and civilivian forces already in shambles from the invasion, they are. So Hiashi and Danzo decide to exploit Naruto's reputation as TheAce and [[spoiler: mold him to become the second Yellow Flash.]]
* LineageComesFromTheFather: Averted, since Naruto knows that his Jinchuriki status, surname and personality comes from his mother.
* MesACrowd: Taken a little more seriously than canon as Naruto is the ''only'' one that could do that many Kage Bushin [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique without dying]] which adds to his growing reputation as TheAce.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Suprisingly so after his CharacterDevelopment.
* OlderAndWiser: Two years in the field under a competant instructor [[spoiler:and the deaths of two colleagues]] did wonders for his self-control.
* OnlySaneEmployee: Of Team 7 and Team Tetsuo. He primarily tries to keep Sasuke from mouthing off when he shouldn't and Sakura from getting herself killed.
* ThePrankster: Tetsuo realizes the skill Naruto has pranking and evolved him into a TrapMaster.
* ShellShockedVeteran: He suffers PTSD after the Kiri Chunin Exams, getting in "moods'' or being extremely overprotective of his friends.
* StreetSmart: Naruto will never be book smart, but he's very resourceful and knows how to read a situation.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Becomes vastly stronger when using Kyuubi's power: improved physical abilities, energy claws, an energy shield and absurd regeneration. Also has a hard time distinguishing friend from foe and tends to kill everything in sight, starting with whoever pissed him off.
* TookALevelInBadass: Goes from a hyperactive HeroicWannabe, to a respected trap specialist.
* TrapMaster: Tetsuo turns Naruto's pranking into a trap speciality.
* UnknownRival: He is TheRival to Sasuke, but he doesn't care about their rivalry.
* UnstoppableRage: When [[spoiler:his teammates are maimed and his peers killed in Kiri]], he ''rips the offenders apart''.
* WeirdnessMagnet: [[LampshadedTrope Lampshaded]], they call it Naruto's C-Rank curse.
* WouldHitAGirl: Naruto's not afraid to punch Sakura if she punches him. He even tells her he's well-aware that kunoichi are no less dangerous than shinobi, if not more so.

!!Tetsuo Shimura
The sensei for Team 5, and the grandson of Danzo (born to his disowned son, who married a foreigner). He is new to teaching and he is a hard and tough taskmaster, but a caring teacher and mentor.

* ActionDad: He has an infant daughter by the time of ''First Try'' & ''Team Tetsuo''.
* BadassTeacher: Naruto had to get it somewhere...
* [[BrainyBrunette Brainy Brunet]]
* [[CareerVersusMan Career Versus Wife]]: The reason Tetsuo became a sensei was because he had to choose between his wife and his career. His wife wanted him to have a less dangerous job than being an active jounin so they could eventually start a family.
* ConMan: He was taught by his mother, a grifter from Tea Country. He ending up teaching his students how to pull an effective con. It's also how he met his wife.
* DamnYouMuscleMemory: Discussed in ''First Try: Autumn Leaves'' - Tetsuo, being new to teaching, has a hard time holding back against his students and sometimes they trigger [[ReflexiveResponse his instincts]], requiring that he restrain himself from using lethal force.
* DarkIsNotEvil: A man with dark brown hair and black eyes, whose grandfather is TheDreaded Danzo, and overall a highly noble individual.
* [[DefrostingIceQueen Defrosting Ice King]]: Tetsuo initially hated Naruto for being the Kyuubi, but he eventually turns around and sees Naruto as his own person and a prized student.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Tetsuo drills his students to the bone and puts them in many situations to gain hard experience, although he lightens up when they show improvement.
* AFatherToHisMen: In particular, he becomes a major father figure to Naruto.
* HappilyMarried: With his wife, although he does face the problems of maintaining a marriage.
* HumbleGoal: Desires to live to see his great-grandchildren. Although seeing the death rates of ninja, maybe not so humble.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Of course, you probably have to be if ''[[ManipulativeBastard Danzo]]'' is your grandsire.
** HiddenHeartOfGold: Towards Naruto (at first), and particularly towards Sakura.
* [[LikeFatherLikeSon Like Mother Like Son]]: He gets his ConMan tendencies from his mother, who was a grifter from Tea Country.
* TheMentor
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: His favorite teaching tactic to toughen up his Genin.
** He especially does this to Sakura, who came on the trip massively unprepared, to give the spoiled girl a wake up call before she gets someone killed. Considering his background, where a ChildhoodFriend of his died soon after Academy graduation thanks to teammates of a similar attitude, it's not surprising really.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Tetsuo was babysat as a child by Kushina, which lead him to telling Naruto about her. Which leads to Naruto asking Hiruzen about her.
* OriginalCharacter: He doesn’t exist in canon.
* ParentalSubstitute: Towards Naruto, to a certain extent.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Morishita.
* RealMenCook: an InformedAbility of his.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: When he realizes why Naruto can't do the bushin, he arranges Naruto to be tutored by Kakashi so the former would learn the Shadow Clone Jutsu.
* RememberTheNewGuy: Is Danzo's never-mentioned grandson. Justified that Tetsuo distanced himself from Danzo because their bad relationship and [[TheDreaded Danzo's reputation.]]
* SternTeacher: He's very strict taskmaster, realizing he needs to divide his attention to his student's different problems. He treats his students fairly and tries to give them a hand to guide them.
* TeamDad: To Team 5 (and the later Team Tetsuo).

!!Satoshi Kamiya
An intelligent young Genin, his skills lie in planning. He suffers severe problems even before the ninja life really kicks off for him. Childhood friend of Suzume.

* BigBrotherInstinct: Despite his [[KleptomaniacHero flaws]], Satoshi shows protectiveness towards Naruto. He tried to invite him to his house, which only failed due to his parents' prejudice.
* BigBrotherMentor: Toward Naruto.
* TheClan: He's the favourite cousin of Tetsuo's wife, and both are part of a large extended family.
* EideticMemory: He can remember anything.
* TheGamblingAddict: He once gambled all their mission funds away; unlike most examples, it's treated pretty seriously.
* KleptomaniacHero: [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]] in that his kleptomania is treated like a real disorder. [[StickyFingers No one trusts him to not steal their stuff]], and Naruto even packs all his furniture and in his apartment into scrolls, leaving just his plants behind for watering. And then Naruto has someone else water his plants because he's afraid Satoshi would steal them and sell them.
* NiceGuy: For a kleptomaniac hero he’s surprisingly kind.
* PutOnABus: In ''Team Tetsuo''.
* TheStrategist: The strategy specialist of the team.
* StickyFingers: His FatalFlaw.
* TeamChef: Often cooked for the team on missions.

!!Suzume Kamizuki
A tough but kind kunoichi, and Satoshi's childhood friend. Unlike most kunoichi, her specialty is direct combat, though she doesn't let her other skills diminish.

* ActionGirl: She was the taijutsu specialist on the team, and she plans to open a Dojo when she retires from her shinobi career.
* BadLiar: Is very honest and hates lying so much, it shows when she tries.
* [[BigBrotherMentor Big Sister Mentor]]: To Naruto, bonding with him and helping him learn more about the world (for instance, she personally helped him realise that his crush on Sakura was unhealthy.
* CoolBigSis: Her treatment of Naruto invokes this, though they're only two years apart agewise. Like Satoshi, she tried to invite Naruto home but was disallowed by her folks.
** Might also have been one to Sakura in ''Team 7'', where she was one of her three teachers.
* CloserToEarth: The most levelheaded of her team.
* CombatMedic: According to Naruto, Suzume is Team 5's designated medic-nin due to chance and experience.
* TheEveryman: She is one by ninja standards.
* TheMentor: She trains Sakura for a while in ''Team 7''.
* OneSteveLimit: Suzume shares her first name with the Academy's kunoichi arts instructor. {{Lampshaded}} in ''Team Tetsuo''.
** She also has the same family name as MauveShirt Izumo Kamizuki, which ''First Try: Autumn Leaves'' reveal is because they're cousins.
* NiceGirl: Just like her teammates.
* PutOnABus: In ''Team Tetsuo'' [[spoiler:until her one scene in Chapter 31.]]
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Suzume might want to open a Dojo, but her hobbies are floral arrangement and basket weaving.
* WomenAreWiser: Is the most centered person on her team. Given her teammates are a klepto and a demon-container, though, who can blame her.

!!Hiro Kurosaki
A genin from the same graduating class as Satoshi and Suzume and their friend, he's a member of Team 11 from that year's graduating class. He's temporarily assigned to Team 5 to [[spoiler:take the Iwa Chunin Exams]] after his teammates [[spoiler:were murdered in Kiri by a deathtrap, set up by an Iwa Genin team.]] According to his sensei, Kinako Morishita, he can be difficult to work with.

* ActionSurvivor: [[spoiler:Is the only one of his team to survive the death trap in the Kiri Chunin Exams.]]
* ChekhovsGunman: Mentioned briefly in conversation between Tetsuo and Morishita, he is part of the reason [[spoiler:Naruto can't become a Chunin with his teammates.]] The other part... [[RevengeBeforeReason well.]]
* DramaticIrony: Morishita thought he would be the first in his team to get himself killed, [[spoiler: but he was only one to survive]].
* GiftedlyBad: Is extremely bad at making exploding seals, but loves to do so.
* GuestStarPartyMember: He gets this later on.
* LastNameBasis: Constantly referred to as Kurosaki, except by Morishita (and at one point, Tetsuo).
* MauveShirt: He got some level of characterization before being PutOnABus.
* PutOnABus: He hasn't appeared since passing the Chunin Exams, although he gets name-dropped in ''Team Tetsuo''.
* PyroManiac: Loves making exploding sealing tags.
* ShellShockedVeteran: After [[spoiler:his teammates' deaths]], he was left more than a little traumatised.

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Team 7 / Team Tetsuo]]

They are not as you know from Canon. In ''Team 7'' they were formed when the Hokage gave Naruto to Kakashi as a bribe to pass them and teach a Genin team. In ''Team Tetsuo'', Sakura and Sasuke were absorbed into Team 5 when Kakashi put off doing the paperwork while Tetsuo filed everything ahead of him in triplicate. When Tetsuo realized he was in over his head with the new additions, he convinced Kakashi to be an assistant teacher to him, making him an honourary member of the team.

For tropes pertaining specifically to Naruto and Tetsuo, see their entries in "Team 5".

* DisappointedInYou: Testuo's happiness at Naruto [[spoiler: finally getting a chance at promotion]] evaporates when he tells Sakura and Sasuke the news and they're ''relieved'' that Naruto will be gone for weeks.
* DreamTeam: In FT:TT, Tetsuo thought that when he got Sakura and Sasuke, he got a dream team with his prized student, the Rookie of the Year and Top Kunoichi. He thought that they wouldn't hold Naruto back and a couple months of nonstop training would get them to Suna Chunin Exams. Then he actually met them. [[PaperTiger The reality couldn't be more different.]]
* FreudianTrio: Averted - Kakashi tries to equate Team 7 to ''his'' old Team 7, but it doesn't work. Naruto is not [[TheMcCoy The Obito]], being the best and most level-headed Genin in the group and also hating his new teammates too much to joke or have crushes on them. Sasuke isn't the best this time, plus he's too hotheaded and self-obsessed to be [[TheSpock The Kakashi]]. Sakura is too incompetent of a kunoichi and too judgemental to be [[TheKirk The Rin.]]
* GenerationXerox: Defied, as said above Team 7 doesn't act anything like their predessors.
* PaperTiger: Sakura and Sasuke are viewed as this in both ''Team 7'' and ''Team Tetsuo''. Tetsuo points out that Sakura's test scores inflated her overall scores when she did terribly in ninjustu and taijutsu. Sasuke is uncooperative, antisocial and focused on power. They both need therapy. Tetsuo thinks the Academy must have had a bad batch that year. [[spoiler:It's worse than that. ''Much'' worse.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: [[{{Irony}} Naruto is the Blue Oni to Sasuke's Red.]]
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Sakura's crush notwithstanding, Team 7's genin really can't stand each other and don't work well together. Initially, anyway.
** When they become members of Team Tetsuo, the more competant and experienced {{Mentor}} steadily works at making them at least passable. They still don't like each other, but they learned to tolerate the others.
** Exemplified when Naruto doesn't think for a second of telling them [[spoiler: that he's leaving for the Suna Chunin Exams]] and Sakura and Sasuka only feel relieved that he's gone
* TheUnfavorite: Sakura and Sasuke to Kakashi. He doesn't think to highly of them and tolerates them for Naruto's sake. Subverted with Tetsuo, who starts opening up to them when they improve their attitudes and competence (well, Sakura does at least - Sasuke still hasn't started opening up to the rest of them.)

!!Kakashi Hakate
The sensei in ''Team 7'' and assistant sensei in ''Team Tetsuo''
* BerserkButton: Don't you ''dare'' insult Obito Uchiha.
* BreakTheHaughty: In ''Team 7'', he's forced to accept that his preconcieved plans and notions are unhealthy for both him ''and'' Naruto.
* BrokenPedestal: In a [[InvertedTrope reversal]], Kakashi gets disappointed with Naruto in ''Team 7''. He wants to teach Naruto, but Naruto doubts his teachings and his students refuse to work as he wants them to.
* CharacterExaggeration / Flanderization: Kakashi was caring if much too distant in the manga and anime who could be argued was a bit out of his depth in being in charge with a team with some students with deep problems, while not having really worked through his own issues first. The version Lucillia employs? See Yandere below.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Jumps at the chance to be Naruto's sensei when Tetsuo asks for his help in bringing the new team up to speed. Regrets it when he has to deal with Sakura and Sasuke's drama, but he puts with it because he gets to be involved.
* MesACrowd: Kakashi teaches Naruto the Shadow Clone Jutsu.
* MissedTheCall: In ''Team Tetsuo'' by being late to his meeting with the Hokage, Hiruzen [[RefusedByTheCall made him reschedule]], allowing Tetsuo the time to fill the paperwork in triplicate to transfer Sakura and Sasuke to ''his'' team
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After Naruto gives himself chakra exhaustion from the Shadow Clone technique Kakashi taught him.
* TheObiWannabe: Kakashi wants to be a mentor to Naruto, but Naruto wants nothing to do with him. It gets better in ''Team Tetsuo''.
* RidiculousProcrastinator: Deconstructed in ''Team Tetsuo'' - Kakashi didn't get Team 7 because he put off doing his paperwork a little too long, leading to Tetsuo filling in the appropriate files before Kakashi gets the chance.
* StealthInsult: Says his motto - "''Those who break the rules are trash. Those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash.''" - directly after Sakura and Sasuke fail to figure out the teamwork portion of the Bell Test and Naruto delibrately offers no assistance. Which [[LampshadeHanging Naruto notes shows exactly what he thinks of them.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: What he employs with his team to tough them up, from all the tropes shown already you can see how well it worked.
* WhatTheHellHero: In ''First Try'' Tetsuo ''socks Kakashi in the face'' and calls him out for irresponsibly teaching Naruto the [[MesACrowd Shadow Clone Jutsu]] without warning him of the danger.
** Jiraiya chews him out for his {{Yandere}} habits in ''Team 7''.
* {{Yandere}}: Non-romantic - Kakashi is ''obsessive'' over Naruto, to the point that in ''Team 7'', he tries to monopolize his "rights" to the boy (apparently, he promised Minato and Kushina that he'd train Naruto). Because Naruto considered Tetsuo his "real" sensei (unsurprisingly), this is counterproductive and instead fosters resentment - since Naruto ''already'' considers Kakashi one of his TrueCompanions, all it did was make the boy spiteful to a man he otherwise likes. Jiraiya [[WhatTheHellHero calls him out on this]], telling Kakashi he failed to take Naruto's feelings into account when he did all this.
** Averted in ''Team Tetsuo'' - he's initially upset, but when Tetsuo gives him a chance to be at least partially involved in Naruto's personal training, he's quite happy about it. It prevents the fracture in their acquaintanceship that happened in ''Team 7''.

!!Sakura Haruno

* BookDumb: Inverted and criticized by Naruto, who says that her by-the-book adhearence to the Academy textbooks will get her killed by someone who read the books.
* BreakoutCharacter: In ''Team Tetsuo'', where she gets a ''lot'' more focus than in the other stories.
* BreakTheHaughty: Pretty much most of her screen time is breaking this haughtiness.
* BullyingADragon: Her attempt at this gets put down. '''Hard.''' The result leaves [[GoneHorriblyRight Sakura terrified of Naruto.]]
* DaddysGirl: To a degree. Good thing too, since Kita Haruno is a more understanding and level-headed than his wife Barako. She does dearly love her mother, too, but even ''she'' has memories of the woman being overbearing at times.
* FauxActionGirl -> ActionGirl: When from almost totally inept and naive in her capabilities as a kunoichi to being capable.
* ForYourOwnGood: Kakashi makes her kill the rabbit she catches in a trap: firstly to make her understand that she was causing it to suffer by her [[TheDitherer indecision]], and secondly to indirectly break it to her that she'll probably be forced to kill during her ninja career.
* GenreBlindness: Thinks that as a kunoichi her knowledge of rules makes her superior to Naruto, and thinks that her love and support of broody loner like Sasuke will get her points with him.
* HunterTrapper: Hunts for her own food by neccessity in ''Team Tetsuo''
* ImportantHaircut: ''Forced'' on her by Tetsuo, who points out how bad long hair can be. However, he only makes her cut it when she can't untangle it - as he knows, ''competent'' ninja don't have to worry about long hair.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She started a nearly JerkWithAHeartOfJerk because of her temper, abrasive ness and treatment of Naruto. But eventually wisens later, becoming more competent, kind, and patient.
* JerkassRealization: Sakura realized, looking back that she went overboard on bullying Naruto. But it's less of "I've been a jerk" and more of "I have been a jerk to a now very dangerous person".
** Fully sinks in when after the Wave arc in ''Team 7'', she sees Naruto generally being happy with Team 5 and realizes that being on Team 7 makes him miserable.
*** She steadily gets the other part, though. Steadily.
** Gets hit with this again in chapter 39 of ''Team Tetsuo'' when she finally learns that Naruto is the Kyuubi's container and realizes she's been a jerk to not only a dangerous person but a dangerous person largely undeserving of her ire.
* TheLoad: Recognised, and she takes steps to avert it. In ''Team 7'', she's given ''three'' mentors prior to the Third Stage of the Chunin Exams (Suzume, Ebisu, and Anko).
* TheMedic -> CombatMedic: when she's disillusioned and made aware of her inadequacies she seeks to join the Medic Corps to get out of field and still maintain her honor in ''Team 7''
** And in ''Team Tetsuo'', she's basically thrust into the role by her sensei because she's the best-suited for it.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: It actually works on her, after a while.
* NaiveNewcomer: She has a severely underdeveloped understanding of the ninja world, which her CharacterDevelopment is centred around outgrowing.
* NewMeat: Sakura especially fits this, being a gifted Academy student but is ignorant of the ninja world and having no actual skill.
* ProperLady: Her mother tried to make her be this which contributed in the formation of "Inner Sakura" as an outlet for her unladylike thoughts.
* SkewedPriorities: When she prepares for the Genin Exam, she is concerned that if she doesn't pass, Sasuke would pass her over to pick Ino.
** In ''Team Tetsuo'', she is concerned that she can't pack her beauty products with her to take in the survival camping trip. This quickly bites her in the ass.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Is obsessed with Sasuke but had the tendency of taking his word as gospel. After the incident with Naruto, she quickly grows out of this.
* TakeALevelInBadass: Steadily so. In the TimeSkip between ''Team 7'' & ''Shippuden'', she [[spoiler:joins the ANBU forces, code-named Racoon.]] In ''Team Tetsuo'', the process is even more detailed and starts earlier.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Of many things, not least of all assuming Naruto killed those Iwa Genin simply because they prevented him becoming a Chunin...
** In ''Team 7'', she is under the impression Naruto is due for a psychotic break due to his extreme irritability, restlessness and snappishness.

!!Sasuke Uchiha

* AdaptationalHeroism: Never defects to Orochimaru in ''Team 7'' and remains a loyal Konoha shinobi in ''Team 7: Shippuden''.
* ActionDad: [[spoiler:In ''Team 7: Shippuden'' (unless it gets a {{Retcon}} when the author rewrites it).]]
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Unlike canon, he's actually one in his team. He can outfight Naruto in hand-to-hand, but Naruto is better than him overall.
* BreakTheHaughty: His self-centeredness comes back to bite him.
** A minor example would in ''Team Tetsuo'' when he had a fix a fence and didn't know how to because he thought that a lesson to act like a [[BeneathNotice laborer]] is beneath him.
** Does not like how Naruto is seen as the strong one while he's seen as the weak link.
* BookDumb: Played with. He's good at school but unless something directly impacts being a ninja, he doesn't know about it. As shown when he badmouths Obito.
* CantCatchUp: He thinks he's this, when really Naruto just has more real-life experience than him [[spoiler:and wasn't held back by a decadent academic system being tampered with by traitors.]]
* CripplingOverspecialisation: Not that you can make him admit it.
* CharacterExaggeration / {{Flanderization}}: Sasuke was not as psychotically self centered before he went off the deep end as the version used in the First Try series.
* EntitledBastard: Reportedly hates all the people who kiss up to him but thinks he is obligated to better training because he's the ''Uchiha.''
* GreenEyedMonster: Grows quickly jealous of Naruto's skill and experience over him, but also gets jealous of ''Sakura'' when she proves to be better at something than him.
* HarmfulToMinors: [[spoiler:To demonstrate torture, he's made to watch Mai perform a "demonstration" on an enemy ninja, and is quite sickened by it.]] Later, he vomits after [[spoiler:being forced to kill many Missing-Nin from a burgeoning "village".]]
* InsaneTrollLogic: Is prone to this because he doesn't want to accept things that don't fit his world view.
* ItsAllAboutMe: His major schtick, which he's slowly being made to outgrow.
* {{Jerkass}} -> JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Finally reaches the latter towards the end of ''Team 7''.
* LeeroyJenkins: He runs headlong into danger without realizing the consequences.
* LonersAreFreaks: While Naruto doesn't care about Sasuke personally, he warns Sasuke to let go of his [[IWorkAlone alone wolf attitude]] because all ninja work in teams and if Sasuke doesn't start working well with others, he'll never be promoted. Sasuke doesn't get a crap.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: After being examined by Tetsuo, he says he's glad he's not a failure like '''Obito'''. Kakashi is [[BerserkButton not pleased]].
* SelectiveObliviousness: Sasuke refused to believe that Naruto graduated earlier than he did, so he makes the rumor that Naruto dropped out and is pretending to be Genin. He's forced to face this when Naruto and him end up on the same team.
* SpoiledBrat: His entire personality at the start could be summarized as “self-centered spoiled brat with a inferiority complex”.
* TrueCompanions: in ''Shippuden'', Team 8 became this to him.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Sasuke's goal of killing Itachi is seen as being rather disturbing. To the point that Tetsuo is fairly certain that Sasuke is an undiagnosed ''[[TheMentallyDisturbed psychotic.]]''
* {{Tykebomb}}: An unknown example, but he acts as such to Itachi.
* UnknownRival: In a reversal to canon, Sasuke becomes one to Naruto, mostly because he sees Naruto as a less crazy and more balanced {{Expy}} of Itachi. Naruto wants nothing to do with him.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Thinks Naruto was ObfuscatingStupidity by delibrately doing bad at the Academy, but graduated the first chance he got. [[AvertedTrope He wasn't.]]

!!Hiruzen Sarutobi
The Third Hokage.

* BrokenPedestal: To Danzo, in the backstory. However...
** RebuiltPedestal: His friend's respect for him is restored [[spoiler: when Hiruzen catches the sabotage in the bud, reforming the educational system before it becomes a major problem.]]
* CoolOldGuy: Comes off this way to Naruto and Konohamaru.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Is a grandfatherly figure to the village and likes to promote peace, but when he found out [[spoiler: his putting off reading the textbooks upgrades cause him to overlook the sabotage in the Academy,]] he puts his foot down. He has the collaborators arrested and worked for immediate reform.
* GuileHero: Invoked {{Nepotism}} to ensure Naruto's genin team would pass.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:In "Team 7", just as in {{Canon}}.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Realizes that it was through his negligence that cause ninja to decline in Konoha.

[[WMG: Danzo Shimura]]

* [[ArchnemesisDad Archnemesis Grandfather]]: Tetsuo and Danzo hate each other.
** [[PapaWolf Grandpa Wolf]]: Nonetheless, ''Team Tetsuo'' shows, quite clearly, that ''nobody'' messes with his grandson.
* AscendedExtra: He plays a major role in ''Team Tetsuo''.
* BabysitterFromHell: While he didn't actually ''do'' anything bad, he once babysitted Kita Haruno as a child and ''scared the living crap out of him''. It contributed to Kita's decision to not become a ninja.
* CharacterCheck: In defiance of ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' fanon, Danzo is portrayed as WellIntentionedExtremist as of canon, but wins the audience over by displaying both his humanity and ManipulativeBastard side.
* TheChessmaster: An undisputed master of this. He makes plan within plans.
* [[DotingParent Doting Grandfather]]: He was one to Tetsuo when he was a child. He even spoiled Tetsuo with gifts and candy.
* TheDreaded: Among the ninjas, who are of the opinion he'll be incredibly dangerous until the day he dies in his sleep at an incredibly old age. Part of it is caused by the fact he's already an old man and crippled to boot and ''still'' in active service (something that they realize means he's still strong, knows Kami knows how many tricks and techniques and has buried anyone who tried to kill him), and part of it is caused by his well-earned fame as a ManipulativeBastard.
-->"That woman's messing with Danzo? I'm amazed she's still alive. I was just a little pipsqueak back during the First War, but I saw him in action then. Crossing him is a really bad idea. It'd be quicker, easier and a darn sight less messy to just turn a Lightning Jutsu on yourself instead."
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He may not like his son marrying a foreigner and his grandson taking after his mother, but Danzo does care for them.
* GoodIsNotNice: He's not a pleasant person, but he serves Konoha first and foremost.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: Only he is allowed to mess with his grandson...
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Well... more like "heart of bronze", but it's definitely there.
* TheNicknamer: He calls Tetsuo "The Boy" and Naruto "The Weapon" (only in his head, though).
* ObnoxiousInLaws: In the backstory, Danzo absolutely hated his daughter-in-law and hoped that his son would eventually divorce. He lightened up with the birth of Tetsuo... and fell right back when it proved [[LikeFatherLikeSon Tetsuo took after his mother]].
* PragmaticVillain: More like a WellIntentionedExtremist, but his treatment of the most annoying Barako in "Team Tetsuo" proves he's still pragmatic: he considered having her killed to spare himself and everyone else from having to deal with her, but spared her because Konoha punishes the murder of a civilian with jail time and not a fine and running Root from a cell would be more trouble than its worth; and he doesn't do ''anything'' to her until she starts a rumor mill against him and Tetsuo that could potentially cause trouble to the shinobi, at which point [[ManipulativeBastard he puts her in her place using the rumor mill himself without even trying seriously]].

!!Iruka Umino

* BigBrotherMentor[=/=]BigBrotherInstinct: To Naruto.
* CoolTeacher: Is admired throughout Konoha for being Naruto's teacher and being the first to spot his potential. However...
** YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: Is also admired for being ''Sasuke's'' teacher, which he's less pleased about.
* ObliviousGuiltSlinging: Is on the receiving end of it when Naruto thanks him for believing in his ability to pass on the first attempt - Iruka was secretly convinced that Naruto would fail, and "felt like a {{Heel}}" when discovering that Naruto had passed.
* OnlySaneEmployee: Sees Sakura and Sasuke for what they are and tried to address it.

!!Konohamaru

* ArmorPiercingAttack: When Konohamaru tried to attack his grandfather, Naruto nearly ''killed'' him (due to his PTSD making him overprotective and irrational), and had to be stopped and reassured by the Hokage.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: After nearly attacking him, Naruto realized Konohamaru was much like him and asked him ''why'' he attacked the Hokage. This question completely changed the boy.
* BigBrotherWorship: He seriously looks up to Naruto.
* LoveAtFirstPunch: Grew to look up to Naruto after the latter attempted to kill him.

!!Jiraiya

* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:In ''Team 7: Divergence'', due to hitting the...]]
** DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:After Tsunade's betrayal and SuicideByCop, which in turn led to his being...]]
** DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:Commits suicide after killing Tsunade and Orochimaru.]]
* DirtyOldMan: And it isn't played for laughs - Suzume and other kunoichi are shown to find his lechery distressing.
* ThePeepingTom: An example not played for laughs, his behavior ends up disturbing the women.
* WhatTheHellHero: Chews out Kakashi for his manner of treating Naruto in ''Team 7'', and every word of it is right.

!!Barako Haruno

* AscendedExtra: In ''Team Tetsuo''.
* AlphaBitch: Is a grown-up version, bullying anyone that doesn't follow her way and manipulates anyone that knows her.
* ControlFreak: Everything must be done her way or else.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Ran out a ninja family with a kekkei genkai because the matriach tripped her into mud. Though Sakura's POV reveals that the woman was apparently a bully towards Barako (which culminated in this incident), it was still a petty thing to do (and doesn't exactly foster respect with the ninja forces). Especially since it would have made more sense to report the woman to the authorities or something, instead of spreading MaliciousSlander.
* GossipyHens: Her powerbase is mostly housewives and retired ninja... until it's turned against her by Danzo.
* HairTriggerTemper: Called her "Extreme Mode" by her daughter and husband.
* HateSink: Sort of, in ''Team Tetsuo'' - part of her narrative purpose is to make Danzo of all people look ''cool'' through her sheer conceitedness.
* MaliciousSlander: Tries to spread this about the Shimura family as revenge for Tetsuo [[FelonyMisdemeanor putting her in her place]]. Danzo pretty much immediately turns it against her... by telling nothing but the ''truth''.
* ManipulativeBitch: Manipulates everyone into doing what she says, but she’s not a very competent example. With more emphasis on her bitch than her manipulations.
* MoralGuardians: A deconstruction of the trope.
* MuggingTheMonster: She decided to run out of Konoha the Shimura family, with no idea it's [[MagnificentBastard Danzo]]'s family. Or that Danzo isn't a crippled drunkard but the second most powerful man in Konoha. [[OhCrap When she finds out she's properly terrified.]]
* MyBelovedSmother: Is controlling of her daughter, often making her do things that Barako believes is appropriate. Like dieting when Sakura got too muscular.
* OCStandIn: Lampshaded in an {{Omake}} where Barako and Kita meets Sakura's parents from the Anime.
* OutGambitted: Her attempt to defame Tetsuo dies when ''Danzo'' takes offense.
* ParentsAsPeople: Just because she loves her daughter and truly does want the best for her, it doesn't automatically make her a good person(or even an ideal parent).
* PetTheDog: She does love her husband and daughter, but simply goes about it the wrong way.
* SmugSnake: Thinks she is very powerful because she ran out the last family who opposed her.

!!Kita Haruno

* AscendedExtra: Was a LivingProp in ''Team 7'' and gained a bigger role in ''Team Tetsuo''.
* GoodParents: Certainly comes off as one to Sakura after he puts his foot down.
* GrewASpine: Put his foot down after Barako costs him his job.
* HenpeckedHusband: He has the sympathy of Konoha for this one.
* NiceGuy: How on Earth did he end up married to ''[[AlphaBitch Barako]]'', of all people?
* OCStandIn: Lampshaded when he meets his Anime counterpart in an {{Omake}}.
* PapaWolf: He does make the effort to at least ''try'' and give Naruto a warning about not hurting his daughter on missions or else (after hearing about the boy's reputation from Sakura). Key word being "try" - he's not fierce enough for Naruto to be intimidated by him.
* RevengeByProxy: Is a victim of this - he was fired from of his banking job of fifteen years because of what his wife did.

!!Kinako Morishita
An old friend from Tetsuo's graduating class (though he refers to her by her surname), Morishita was assigned as sensei for Team 11 the same year that Team 5 graduated.

* ActionGirl: A female jonin of Konoha.
* DrowningMySorrows: She becomes alcoholic and depressed after [[spoiler:her first ever genin team is destroyed, two of them killed.]]
* HeelRealisation[=/=]JerkassRealization: [[spoiler:After her students' deaths, she is desperate for someone to blame and because the perpetrators are dead, she starts to find excuses for blaming Naruto (he didn't take point knowing he's the best at locating traps, etc.)... and then has the epiphany of how dreadful it was that people directed their hate at the most viable target they could find since the Nine-Tails was no longer around. While she wasn't outright cruel to Naruto before, she makes an extra effort to help him after this fact.]]
* HeroicBSOD: Due to [[spoiler:her students being killed.]]
* IntergenerationalFriendship: She kind of forms one with Naruto [[spoiler:after realising how lucky the village is that he's not snapped from the abuse.]] She even gets him into therapy to overcome the trauma of [[spoiler:the Kiri Exams.]]
* LastNameBasis: To Tetsuo.
* OriginalCharacter: An original character who doesn’t exist in canon.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Tetsuo.

!!Tetsuo's Wife
[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Tetsuo's wife]] who contributed to [[CareerVersusMan Tetsuo's decision]] to become a sensei - so he can have a relatively safe job and she won't have to constantly worry about losing her husband in the field.

* AffectionatePickpocket: How Tetsuo met his wife - he was coning her and she stole his wallet.
* TheClan: Is part of a large one which acts a huge extended family and includes Satoshi.
* TheGhost: Is never actually seen in story, but contributes by being the driving force behind Tetsuo's decisions
* HappilyMarried: To Tetsuo, faces realistic problems of a marriage such as having major decisions on one's career or needing space after a major fight.
* NoNameGiven: Is never referred by name in the narrative.
* OriginalCharacter: Doesn’t exist in canon.
* SatelliteCharacter: Had no characterization besides her relation to Tetsuo, not even a name.
* StickyFingers: Is a pickpocket, which is how she met Tetsuo. Apparently her clan is like this, to a greater or lesser extent. It was one of the agreements in their marriage: Tetsuo would cut down on his conning and she would cut down on pickpocketing.

!!Hibachi
An Academy graduate from Naruto's age group, he wasn't well-liked by Naruto for having bullied him. He failed the Genin Exam.

* TheBully: Used to bully Naruto and nearly got him killed once.
* ICouldaBeenAContender: Realizes he missed his chance to be friends with someone great when Naruto TakesALevelInBadass and earns the respect of Konoha's shinobi. Happens again when he fails the Genin Exam.
* NominalImportance: Subverted, as he was part of the nameless Teams 1-6, who ''didn't'' pass the Genin Exams.
* OriginalCharacter: Subverted - he's actually an obscure character from the Konoha History {{Filler}} Arc in the anime. The NoodleIncident which nearly got Naruto killed is shown there in full.
* RecurringCharacter: Not a major player, but he brings a unique perspective onto the field from time to time.
* TookALevelInKindness: He comes to truly regret having bullied Naruto, and after the latter comes back a ShellShockedVeteran, he actively makes an effort to support him [[WhatYouAreInTheDark behind the scenes.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: Wanted to become a ninja to make his father proud, [[spoiler: gets his second chance in the Educational Reform retests in ''Team Tetsuo''.]]

!!Shin and his nameless comrade
A pair of ROOT agents.

* TheCameo: The unnamed agent is heavily implied to be Sai.
* GuileHero: Shin.
* HeroicBystander: Shin didn't have to incite the village of Saida against the merchant but he does anyway.
* NoNameGiven: The nameless agent.
* ThoseTwoGuys: So far.

* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler:Zabuza and Mei grew up together, and while they didn't date before their marriage they are pretty happy with each other.]]
* FieryRedhead: Certainly fits the criteria with her fiery attitude and her power.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:To Zabuza.]]
* LadyOfWar: As Mizukage certainly.

!!Zabuza Momochi

* EarlyBirdCameo: [[spoiler:In "Team Tetsuo", along with the Demon Brothers.]]
* AFatherToHisMen: He's no specific fan of his subordinates other than Haku but he treats them well [[spoiler:and genuinely regrets when Mai gets hurt in ''Team Tetsuo'']].
* GoodIsNotSoft: As an assassin learned the hard way.
* HappilyMarried: To [[spoiler:Mei Terumi.]]
** PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Sort of.

* HouseHusband: [[spoiler: After Mei gives birth to their first child, he stays home and raises him while his wife is busy being the Mizukage.]]
* PunchClockVillain: Notable InUniverse for being a political dissident, not a criminal.
* ShotgunWedding: [[spoiler: Mei Terumi]] already has a wedding planned, she just needs a groom.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In "Team 7". [[spoiler: May also end up this way in "Team Tetsuo".]]

!!Haku

* BattleButler: Like in {{Canon}}, but here he practically makes it literal after he and Zabuza return to Kiri - in the "Zabuza" spin-off, he's Zabuza and Mei's butler in all but title.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Worked to his favor when Naruto met him in Kiri. Naruto asked for his help in finding a ramen stand, which enabled Haku to evade the Kiri nin.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In Kiri, shortly before the Kiri Chunin Exams.
* FriendlyEnemy: To Naruto team as in canon.
* PunchClockVillain: Same as Zabuza.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In "Team 7". [[spoiler: May also end up this way in "Team Tetsuo".]]

!!Mizuko Sanbashi
A Kiri Jounin, who was a proctor in the Kiri Chunin exams.

* TheBusCameBack: His return in "Team Tetsuo" and ''Team 7''.
* MistakenForBadass: Believes Naruto to be more powerful and competent than he really is.
* OriginalCharacter: Doesn’t exist in canon.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: When he found Team 5's abandoned campsite, he deduced [[spoiler:the entire fight with the Iwa nin and which one was the Kyuubi Jinchuriki]] by just their footprints.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Able to deduce with limited evidence that Naruto was Kyuubi Jinchuriki, [[spoiler: but believes that Naruto's parents died protecting him from the Yondaime to stop him from taking their son.]] In ''Team Tetsuo'', he believes that [[spoiler:Naruto and his team were ''on a mission'' to get rid of an upstart ninja village (rather than stumbling into the scenario), covering it up by hiring Zabuza and his cohorts.]]
