Main character of the first game and Prince of the Netherworld. After waking up from a two year "nap" and discovering that his father, King Krichevskoy, has died some time ago, Laharl sets upon claiming the throne for himself. Laharl is cocky, spoiled, and quick-tempered. How much of this is real and how much of it is a front he puts up to feel powerful is a question that most of his vassals ponder. He also has a physical aversion towards optimism and well-endowed women.
----
* AbdicateTheThrone: [[spoiler:In the Item God 2 ending, Laharl decides he is not ready to be Overlord yet and hands the title over to Etna.]]
* AccidentalMisnaming: He is not very fond of the pet name "Harlie" Jennifer decided to give him. Not like it'll stop her from calling him that.
* AesopAmnesia: He goes back to his NobleDemon CardCarryingVillain self in his subsequent appearances, though they've mostly been cameos.
** He seems to be aware that he is under the influence of this trope as of ''Absence of Justice''.
-->'''Laharl:''' This series treats me worse and worse with each passing game. I demand a valid explanation for this.
** ''Disgaea D2'' shows that his CharacterDevelopment is still there, he just doesn't exactly show it.
* AllThereInTheManual: In the games' canon, his aversion to busty women is [[PlayedForLaughs played for many laughs and jokes at his expense]]. [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels The novels]], though not canon to the games, paint a much darker story; Laharl's aversion to busty women was instilled into him by his aunt, a well-endowed demon who [[spoiler:abused him quite severely after his mother's death (for a century's worth, no less), on the account that no one with human blood should take the throne of the Overlord]].
** D2 appears to {{retcon}} this, as it's strongly implied his phobia is due to the fact that the buxom Rainier used to babysit him, and her idea of how to make an infant sleep is to [[DeadBabyComedy smother him into unconsciousness]] with her considerable assets.
*** However, according to the [[AllThereintheManual D2 special edition artwork]], it's implied that Rainier could very well be lying to Laharl to get Laharl to let his guard down around her.
* AllergicToLove: In episode 5, Laharl actually [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration loses statistics]] when lustful demons accost him with [[Main/CareBearStare words of encouragement, love, and kindness]].
* AloofBigBrother: To Sicily in ''Disgaea D2'', though it's justified since he doubts she's actually his sister. [[spoiler:He subtly grows out of this, even before learning he actually is Sicily's brother.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter
** When fought in the second game, he's level 1200 compared to Etna's intial level of 1000, showing that he's still stronger than his wayward vassal despite the latter gaining power that surpasses the average Overlord. [[spoiler:Of course the script gets flipped on him once Rozalin awakens as [[SuperPoweredEvilSide Overlord Zenon]] and utterly trounces him.]]
** He's quotes this trope word for word and attempts to [[InvokedTrope invoke]] it upon Zed in ''Disgaea 6's'' post-game.
-->'''Laharl''': [[BadassBoast "I came all this way to teach you that there's always someone better than you out there! In this case, that's me!"]]
* AntiVillain: According to him, since he's a CardCarryingVillain with some good traits. Though given the BlueAndOrangeMorality of demons, he has skewed views. In practice, he's an JerkWithAHeartOfGold AntiHero.
* AnnoyingLaugh: Etna thinks so; "Ugh, that stupid laugh...".
* {{Backstory}}: Laharl was born of the Queen, wife of the King Krichevskoy; Overlord of the Netherworld. Krichevskoy was so thrilled by his son's birth that he froze the ocean. Laharl was raised with love and care, and his mother preached to him about love regularly. He was also scolded by his mother whenever he did something bad, because she wanted to raise him to be a kind boy. He became greatly attached to his parents, especially his mother, but one day, he was infected with a rare and deadly disease that could not be cured by normal means. The life of one who loved him was required to save him; the Queen took her own life to do just that, despite Krichevskoy's effort to stop her. From that point on, Laharl hated and repressed the feeling and concept of love because it was his mother's love for him that drove her to kill herself. This repression of love was so strong that he did not even mourn his mother's death, but shut away his feeling of sorrow. He also became physically averse to the love phrases his mother had preached to him. Laharl came to distance himself from his father, going so far as to claim he hated him, but lived a comfortable life at the Overlord's Castle ordering and complaining to the servants at his own leisure. One day after his 1310th birthday, Laharl decided to take a 10-day nap, meanwhile, Tyrant Overlord Baal attacked the Netherworld and Krichevskoy had to use up all his energy to seal him. Later, Etna poisoned Laharl at Maderas's command, causing Laharl to sleep for over two years. Etna eventually woke him up and told him about his father's demise. Sequentially, Laharl went on a quest to become the Overlord.
* BadBoss: In chapter eight, he speculates that ''maybe'' making the prinnies work 20 hours a day with no days off was a ''bit'' harsh.
** In ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', when he thinks one of them tried to kill him, he gives them a SadisticChoice between working for free, or if they try to run, he'll force them to work while TAKING their money.
* BadassAdorable: Emotionally vulnerable, cute as a button, and [[spoiler:as of a cameo in ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject'', is apparently strong enough to burn modern-day Earth to the ground]].
* BadassArmFold: Default pose.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: Laharl's chest is always completely exposed, but is never drawn with nipples.
* BattleCry: "Ora! Here I come!" "Wha! Ha! Bite the dust!" "Here I come! Haaahahahaha!" "Die".
* BeneathTheMask: Laharl tries his very best to be completely perceived as an evil demon, but his more positive qualities, like his [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold forgiving, noble, and strangely kind nature]], are regularly provoked to the surface throughout the game.
* BerserkButton:
** You do '''not''' [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice your life to save another's]], ''especially his'', regardless of your rank or status in his Netherworld. Period. The consequences for doing so are dire to both friend and foe, to say the least.
** While he definitely thinks of himself as the superior Overlord, Laharl still clearly holds his father in very high regard, and using Krichevskoy's name in vain is a guaranteed invitation for a beatdown, as Garungun would find out the hard way when attempting to pass off a random prinny as a reborn Krichevskoy.
-->'''Laharl''': "Etna. Do it."
** If his voice-only cameo in ''VideoGame/SoulNomadAndTheWorldEaters'' is anything to go by, taking the title of Overlord lightly seems to be a minor one, claiming he had to work like hell to earn his position.
* BadLiar: All his attempts to hide his nicer side. Nobody ever buys it; even Flonne sees through him.
* {{BFS}}: Most artwork depicts him as carrying one that's bigger than he is.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Subtly develops one towards Sicily [[spoiler:even before learning she really is his sister]]. Flonne and Etna pick up, nearly instantly, that Laharl really does love her a lot, even though he constantly pretends like she's just another person who happens to hang around the castle, and goes above and beyond to keep her happy while trying poorly to keep up his jerk facade.
** [[spoiler:When Virunga tells Sicily she has no choice but to immediately return to Celestia, he outstretches his hand and tells her to come. Laharl then just walks up, bats his hand away, and lectures him about how he doesn't even care about what she wants. When Virunga continues to demand that Laharl and the others allow Sicily to leave, Laharl's basic answer is to try and take her from him. As one would expect, Virunga gets his butt kicked.]]
* BigSisterWorship: Towards Etna. She's not his real sister, but she was practically raised by his father and the nature of their relationship is very similar to that of siblings. His worship of her is not obvious, [[WellDoneSonGuy but it's implied that he craves recognition and respect from her]]. She, on the other hand, seems to see him as a AnnoyingYoungerSibling.
** A good example would be how she got him to find Aramis' pet zombie by saying that she'd never acknowledge him as Overlord if he refused to help.
* BlushSticker: [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mammy_1496.png Baby Laharl,]] drawn by the series artist Takehito Harada.
* BrattyHalfPint: Canonically, his height is four feet and five inches tall -- not that anyone would pick up on that if his impressively-sized ego was all they were measuring.
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler:The ending where Flonne was sentenced to be a flower for all eternity because of Laharl can be seen as this. Even the Normal Ending where he sacrifices his life to save Flonne counts, though it's a lesser example.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Laharl's got some strange ideas of what it means to be an Overlord. If money is needed, it's time to loot some noble's mansion [[note]]though to be fair, they stole it from his castle first[[/note]]. Assassin angels/[[LoveFreak Love Freaks]] are potential recruits. Laughing evilly on a regular basis is a requirement. Ideal Overlord tasks are [[PokeThePoodle making it rain pepper so the humans will sneeze their nostrils out or deprive children of their sleep by giving them addictive video games]]. Heroes should not just be defeated; enslavement is the way to go. Granted, demon standards of evil lie on this level generally, anyways -- Laharl's theme song proclaims not washing his hands after going to the bathroom and playing with fire as pillars of wickedness.
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:In the ending you get if you've beaten the Item God 2, it looks like Laharl has killed Lamington, but it turns out he's still alive. Mid-Boss comes and explains the situation and Flonne is returned to normal. Laharl declares that if he acted so quickly in anger, he is not ready to be the Overlord, and teleports away.]]
* ButtMonkey: More so in the light novels, but he still has some moments in the game as well.
* ByronicHero: A comedic version.
* CapeWings: According to ''[[AllThereInTheManual The World of Disgaea]]'' artbook, Laharl had this ability with his scarf, though it never made it into the game. It does show up in the ''Anime/MakaiSenkiDisgaea'' anime, [[spoiler:though you have to wonder how he managed to take down a ''space'' armada without the ability to fly]].
* CardCarryingVillain: "...The pendant is telling me that my heart is wicked. That's good to know." [[spoiler:When someone who has evil in their heart touches the pendant, it will burn them. Vulcanus was [[LightIsNotGood burned by it after he stole it from Flonne in the same episode]], and unlike Laharl, it was too hot for him to even hold onto.]]
* AChildShallLeadThem: [[spoiler:About halfway through the game, he becomes the Overlord, and even though he is 1313 years old, he appears to be mentally and physically about 13.]]
* ColonyDrop: His ultimate exclusive skill, [[DeathFromAbove Meteor Impact]].
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: It's convenient for the plot, [[OrphansOrdeal but not much else]].
* CrazyConsumption: After tasting Hanako's delicious food, he thinks she used Zombie Juice to make it so good. Hanako takes this as an insult.
* CrossdressingVoices: He's voiced by Barbara Goodson and Creator/KaoriMizuhashi.
* CrutchCharacter: He can solo the entire main story if you grind a bit, but this is not the way to conquer the bonus content.
* CulturedBadass: Yes, believe it or not. Laharl does indeed know how to be sophisticated and how to behave himself at formal affairs.
* CurbStompBattle: He gives one to the ''Disgaea 2'' party during the main storyline, and is on the receiving end of one just afterwards when he unknowingly awakens Rozalin's SuperpoweredEvilSide.
* CuteIsEvil: Cute? You bet! Evil? [[CardCarryingVillain He likes to think so.]]
* CuteLittleFangs[=/=]FangsAreEvil: In his default state and less negative emotions, his fangs seem small and adds to his cute look, but when he's pissed off, his mouth will open wide and reveal two fangs that, more than anything else, resemble shark teeth.
* DCupDistress: When he turns into a girl, Laharl frequently complains about his chest. Etna cheerfully offers to "help" him...
* DarkAndTroubledPast: You wouldn't expect it from a ''Disgaea'' game, but the [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels novels]] say otherwise.
* DeadpanSnarker: He has his moments.
* DeathByDespair: [[spoiler:When Sicily sacrifices herself in one of ''D2's'' bad endings he is overcome with grief and simply waits at the spot that she disappears until he dies.]]
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Laharl's mother was a loving woman and his father a righteous man -- both conveniently dead. Deconstructed in that his mother's death had a hugely negative impact on him [[spoiler:and his father, being reincarnated as Mid-Boss, is by technicality still alive]].
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Most of the characters join him this way, but he always claims it's to make use of their skills as his vassals. He refuses to acknowledge that his decisions were influenced by friendship, love, or otherwise.
* DefrostingIceKing: He starts out distant, constantly irritable, and condescending, but eventually warms up to Flonne and Etna.
* DemotedToExtra: Over the years, Etna and Flonne have appeared in more spinoffs while Laharl has fewer significant appearances. He seems aware of this, as in a trailer for ''Disgaea D2'', he protests Etna and Flonne proclaiming themselves the main characters of the game and proudly proclaims it's his turn in the spotlight again.
* {{Determinator}}: His superior persistence is one of the attributes he is the most proud of. He won't let anything get in the way of what he wants.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: 10 years after the game in the novels, Laharl manages to deliver a [[CurbStompBattle completely one-sided beatdown]] to ''[[EldritchAbomination Baal]]'', and for additional humiliation, let his team of [[ButtMonkey prinnies]] loose on Baal after his defeat. It's not Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu anymore -- more like Did You Just Sue Cthulhu For Ten Billion [=HLs=] and Make Him Your Slave?
* DodgeTheBullet: In ''Disgaea 2'', Etna and Flonne get pissed at Laharl for various reasons and attack him with swords and guns. He dodges all of the initial blows, though just barely, and shows off some nice footwork. He does this occasionally in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' as well.
* DominantSpeciesGenes: Laharl's mother was human, but his status as a HalfHumanHybrid is never brought up in the games [[spoiler:(though it is in the novels)]], he exhibits all of the traits of demons, and [[spoiler:like all Overlords]] he's extremely powerful.
* DontYouDarePityMe: [[VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite "Don't give me that look of pity. I just had a bad concussion. Bad enough that I lost my memory of getting a concussion."]]
* DoubleEntendre: Laharl has a bad habit of claiming to do things (often bad things) to another person's body [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything without realizing that his words can be interpreted differently]]. Etna often lampshades it.
* DramaticWind: Wind follows Laharl constantly during battle, making his scarf billow. Interestingly, it has become a tradition among [[Characters/Disgaea2CursedMemories Disgaea]] [[Characters/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice main]] [[Characters/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten characters]] to have a DramaticWind following them during battle.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: In ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness'', many demons aren't even aware he's the overlord, and the Krichevskoy Group doesn't even take him for a threat.
* TheDutifulSon: He wasn't even aware that he had any siblings until ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness'', but [[spoiler:Vyers]] calls him "quite the dutiful son" in the manga, which is very true; Lahal is quite devoted to his duty as per his heritage.
* ElementalPunch: His Blazing Knuckle move is fire-based and runs off his physical attack stat.
* EmotionallyTongueTied: [[VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite "C, congra-... Aghh! I said, congratulations!"]].
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Even at his worst, he doesn't deny he loved his mom.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite being a CardCarryingVillain who loves to plunder and kill everything, there are several lines Laharl will never cross. Case in point, Jennifer's sex-ed and initial assumption that [[IHaveYouNowMyPretty she's going to be]] [[RapeIsASpecialKindofEvil violated by demons.]], and he actually takes offense to accusations of demons as tentacle monsters.
** Despite the fact that most demons approve of underhanded tactics, Laharl considers taking hostages low-class and brushes off the Krichevskoy Group's suggestion of using Sicily as a hostage against the angels in ''Disgaea D2''.
* EvilEyebrows: Different from normal evil eyebrows in that each look like a straight line, but they have the same effect as it makes him look perpetually angry even though he is not. He usually sports an ambiguous smile and acts rather content, but he's chronically irritable and never stays content for long.
* EvilLaugh: "Laughing is very important to an Overlord!"
* SignatureLaugh: A high-pitched "Ahhh-hahahahaha!"
* EvilOverlord: In training.
* TheEvilPrince: Laharl thinks he is this; he even claims he was ready to dethrone his father before he went and croaked on his own. [[NobleDemon Of course, that only applies for a certain level of evil]].
* ExposedToTheElements: Laharl is one of the least dressed characters NIS has ever created, yet he never makes any remarks about changing temperatures, despite adventuring to parched lakes of lava and frozen tundras.
* ExpressiveEars: They move ever so slightly along with his mood.
* ExpressiveHair: Laharl's antennas changes shape according to his current emotion. For example, they will curl up in shape when Laharl is lightly surprised, sharpen if he is annoyed and be perfectly erect if he is angry.
* ExpressiveAccessory: Like his antennas, his scarf will change shape in accordance with his mood.
* FantasticRacism: Laharl is a victim of this in the novels, [[spoiler:where his aunt and uncle organize a resistance against his reign because he is half-human]].
* FetalPositionRebirth: In the opening art of the game, Laharl can be seen sleeping in a loose fetal position floating in a void under the Red Moon, and in the Red Moon chapter, Laharl is figuratively reborn by rediscovering love.
* FlamingMeteor: Laharl's recurring attack [[RidingTheBomb Meteor Impact]] is always depicted this way.
* FoodAsBribe: In ''VideoGame/{{Prinny|CanIReallyBeTheHero}} 2'', it is confirmed he loves snacks and he will even help the Prinnies out in exchange for sweets.
* FreakyFashionMildMind: Laharl simply wears a [[ScarfOfAsskicking scarf]] and [[ExposedToTheElements short shorts]], making it look like he is confused about what season it is. Subverted when it turns out [[CardCarryingVillain he's still]] [[NobleDemon not exactly]] [[BrattyHalfPint mild]], but in a completely different way than he exhibits through his appearance.
* FriendlessBackground: When Laharl was asleep for two years, people just assumed that he was dead or simply forgot about him. No one cares beyond that, except Etna who wanted to use him for her own gain, and one of his vassals who expressed disappointment that she didn't get to use the grave she dug for him.
* GenderBender: In ''A Brighter Darkness,'' the Celestia flowers blooming in the Netherworld have the side effect of turning him into a well-endowed woman. This only lasts a whole episode, and his...er, her new looks causes Laharl to get a lot of popularity in the Netherworld (only as female Laharl, though).
* GenerationXerox: Laharl's father does his best to invoke this trope, [[spoiler:by working with Lamington to have Laharl become best friends with an angel of high expectations like himself and further the work to unite the Netherworld and Celestia that he started]]. It is also mentioned that Laharl and King Krichevskoy are rather similar. Laharl probably inherited his big [[SmugSuper ego]] from his [[{{Narcissist}} father]].
* GlorySeeker: He desires to be respected and looked ''up'' to, and absolutely hates to be disrespected.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Laharl sports bright yellow eyes when extremely annoyed and glowing red eyes when agonized or enraged,
* GoodHurtsEvil: Being horribly allergic to love and optimism makes Laharl Disgaea's prominent example of this, but any evil being can be hurt by Flonne's pendant, light or dark.
* {{Greed}}: No one is touching ''his'' allowance, even if it is vassals late for their paychecks, and he has been called stingy by Etna several times.
* HairAntennae: Deliberately styled to make himself [[TheNapoleon look taller]].
* HairTriggerTemper: It would be easier to create a list of things that don't annoy him.
* HairstyleInertia: Laharl may have been born with his current hairstyle if his baby picture from Takehito Harada is any indication.
* HalfHumanHybrid: His mother is human, but most people still refer to him as a demon, if only for convenience's sake. Oddly, his half-human status is never even mentioned in the games proper, though in the novels [[spoiler:it's an important part of his {{Backstory}}]].
* HatesBeingAlone: Possesses some severe abandonment issues thanks to the death of his mother.
* HatesBeingTouched: It's never stated directly that he hates to be touched, but the few times someone has approached him closely, he has reacted negatively, especially if said person is well-endowed.
* HatesTheirParent: He openly acknowledges that he hates his dad [[note]]Though how much he hates him depends on whether or not you interpret his line as actual hatred or him simply acting like a typical demon[[/note]], while he really liked his mother.
* HeartbrokenBadass: [[spoiler:Too young to fall in love, but he is absolutely devastated in the end because of Flonne's fate. How bad it turns out depends on the ending you get.]]
* HeavySleeper: In the intro to the first game, Laharl wakes up from a two-year nap, with Etna ''violently'' waking him up. [[spoiler:Said nap was due to poison by Etna, but considering that he initially meant for it to be a ''ten-day'' nap, he's still playing the trope straight.]] She had tried to wake him up by attacking him with various deadly weapons, even when it took over a year to wake him up, and it did [[MadeOfDiamond not seem to hurt him the slightest]].
%%* HellishPupils
* HereditaryHairstyle: Sicily has the same hair antennae as him.
* TheHero: [[NobleDemon Sort of.]]
* HiddenHeartOfGold: He does genuinely care about Flonne and Etna, and later Sicily, even if he won't admit it.
* HisStoryRepeatsItself: [[spoiler:Sacrifice seems to be very a common theme with Laharl. When he was inflicted with a deadly disease, his mother sacrificed her life to cure him, causing him to reject love altogether. At the end of the game, he watches Flonne sacrifice her life so that he and the rest will not suffer Lamington's punishment, causing him to lash out at the Seraph. Then, after defeating the Seraph, Laharl attempts to sacrifice his life to bring Flonne back, though whether or not he does so depends on the ending (canonically, Flonne is revived thanks to Laharl sparing Lamington despite his anger).]]
** In ''Disgaea D2'', [[spoiler:Sicily attempts to offer her life to Xenolith for the safety of the other angels, but Laharl refuses to let her do it. Laharl even notes that she's acting just like their mother. Sadly, if the player gets one of the bad endings, Sicily sacrifices her life to stabilize the Netherworld despite Laharl pleading to her not to.]]
* HopelessBossFight: The first fight with him in ''Disgaea 2''; he's level 1200, making him the strongest enemy encountered during the main story.
* HostileShowTakeOver: Attempts this in ''Disgaea 2'', but by that point [[VillainForgotToLevelGrind the cast is strong enough to defeat him]].
* HotBlooded: Comes along with his CardCarryingVillain status; he's quick to anger, has a massive ego, and [[LargeHam can often get hammy]] in his remarks.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: [[spoiler:Laharl's reaction to Flonne's death in the ending. "You're going to abandon me, like my mother did? I didn't give you permission! Is this what you call love? If it is, then I'll never believe in love! Ever!"]]
* HumbleHero: [[GlorySeeker Mostly inverted]], but he has a unusual tendency to become embarrassed when praised:
-->''Hmph... Quit complimenting me so much. It's embarrassing.''
* HumongousMecha: The Laharl Kaiser V as Disgaea 4 DLC.
* IMissMom: He never says it, but he obviously does.
* InformedDeformity: For a kid who likes to brag that he doesn't brush his teeth, his toothy grin (As pictured above) is quite clean.
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Laharl regularly insists that his less-than-evil actions are mostly for his own convenience. Nobody buys it.
* InvincibleHero: In the anime, the only time he's ever presented being in any danger of losing is due to his WeaksauceWeakness to {{Fanservice}} and optimistic talk, which is in a scene played humorously. Every other fight, he's unstoppable.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: His scarf. Good luck trying to replicate that one in real life.
* ImprobableAge: Even though he is mentally and physically 13 in demon years, [[spoiler:he rules the Netherworld]], but he manages quite nicely, all things considered.
* InadequateInheritor: His father thought he was this at the time of his death, so he had asked Etna to make sure Laharl became a great Overlord. Everyone seems to think Laharl is incompetent because he is such a RoyalBrat, but the good news is that Laharl is better than he initially lets on.
** This becomes a big plot point in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness'' where a group of former vassals plans to have him removed and constantly compare him to Krichevskoy.
* IneffectualLoner: Never willingly alone, but absolutely miserable when he is.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Different in that he does think highly of himself, but is desperately afraid of others thinking less of him.
* InnocentProdigy: Despite usually having an incredibly selective attention and tending towards naivety, he does have his moments of depth and contemplation where he displays his intelligence.
* InsufferableGenius: Laharl really is as powerful as he lets on, and when placed in a difficult situation, he will beat his way out of it.
* {{Irony}}: Laharl has gynophobia tailored specifically to well-endowed women, so what should he become when he goes through his GenderBender?
* ItsAllAboutMe: "Everyone, pay attention to me!"
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler:Upon hearing that Sicily was born in Celestia as a Demon Angel because of their mother's sacrifice and that her status made her an outcast, Laharl recognized that it was his fault for everything Sicily went through and even tells Sicily that she should be angry at him. He does this to also deflect any resentment Sicily might have against their mother for her sacrifice. Luckily, Sicily doesn't resent her mother at all and is happy that her brother lives.]]
* JackOfAllStats: In his base game, all of Laharl's weapon proficiencies are A-rank, save for a B-rank with Staves and C-rank with Guns. He also has 100% aptitude in all stats, letting him fit comfortably into any role. Sequels nudge him into being a sword-using physical attacker.
* JustAKid: Etna uses this trope to call him out on his emotional immaturity, while Gordon and Jennifer are in disbelief that the overlord appears to be a thirteen-year-old boy.
* JustTheFirstCitizen: While he's the Overlord ruler of the Netherworld, he's usually called "Prince" by many of his vassals, who are still used to thinking of him this way. He doesn't seem to mind.
* {{Keet}}: Normally not seen, but when he becomes the Overlord, he immediately begins shouting excitedly "Overlord! Overlord! Overlord!" and as his first act practices his EvilLaugh for hours on end.
* KidHero: A physically and mentally 13-year-old NobleDemon protagonist.
* LamarckWasRight: Just as Laharl is able to hijack a meteor for his final attack, Meteor Impact, [[spoiler:Mid Boss aka King Krichevskoy]] is able to drive a crescent moon into his enemies. ''VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten'' also shows that Laharl inherited the Blazing Knuckles attack from his father, though his father's attack uses ice instead.
* LargeHam: Especially in the dub. Boy! [[Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers Rita]] [[Creator/BarbaraGoodson Repulsa]] must've a son with her voice.
* Laws of Genderbending: Girl Laharl averts all three:
** [[FirstLawOfGenderbending First]]: In ''D2'', it only lasts for one chapter. In all her other appearances, her biggest priority is to find a way to turn back into a male again.
** [[SecondLawOfGenderbending Second]]: She constantly complains about how she hates her busty body and says it only gets in the way of fighting. She also doesn't like that [[AllMenArePerverts she's more popular as a female]].
** [[ThirdLawOfGenderbending Third]]: She still acts like the same Laharl we know, but with debilitating body consciousness.
* LeanAndMean: Not to an extreme, but Laharl's waist is disturbingly thin; it's even thinner than his female companions.
* {{Leitmotif}}: An Ode to Lord Laharl, and arguably, Disgaea.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: With Flonne. See LovingAShadow below.
* LonelyRichKid: His parents are dead, he is implied to have a vast fortune in money, he is implied to have no close friends other than Etna and Flonne, and [[spoiler:according to ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'' he has severe abandonment issues]].
* LovingAShadow: It is mentioned that Flonne is very similar to Laharl's mother, and there is quite a lot of [[ShipTease ship teasing]] between the two.
* TheMagnificent: In English, Laharl calls himself "The great Laharl" and the like, instead of "ore-sama" like in Japanese.
* MeaningfulName: In addition to the volcano ThemeNaming, Laharl's name means flow of ''mud'' from a volcano and the guy who fathered him is named after a real volcano (as a matter of fact, Laharl's name is the only demon part of the volcano ThemeNaming that is not named after a volcano). This makes sense because of how [[RoyalBrat Laharl]] is in comparison to his [[TheWisePrince father]].
* MementoMacGuffin: In the novels, Laharl's mother used to wear a scarf that is very similar to his own. It's never stated that he inherited the scarf from his mother, but knowing Laharl, it's probably not a coincidence.
* MommasBoy: He would have most likely become this had his mother still been alive. Her death had a huge impact on him; he went [[UnableToCry beyond mourning her death]] by denying the very emotion that symbolizes the bond between them, love, and [[AllergicToLove he falls ill every time someone just mentions the words she used to preach to him]].
* MonaLisaSmile: His default expression is a coy smirk.
* MoodSwinger: He has 13 different moods that he drasticly swings between. {{Justified|Trope}} since such drastic mood swings are perfectly normal for a teenager. Not an extreme example, because all of the moods have recognizable causes and they are of a wide spectrum, not just extremes.
* MsFanservice: When transformed into a girl he looks like a supermodel, much to the ire of [[ACupAngst Flonne and Etna]].
* MultiSlotCharacter: In ''5'' and ''6'', his [[GenderBender female]] form is a separate character from her male form.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Does it look like he can lift his own {{BFS}}? Some weapons he can carry would probably weigh more than he does.
* MyEyesAreLeaking: "What's this, a tear?...I didn't know I could shed tears."
* TheNapoleon: The character notes in the World of Disgaea artbook even declare that he has a Napoleon complex.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: He strikes a nice balance between Flonne's nice and Etna's mean, although it takes some CharacterDevelopment to get to this status. Despite his belief that he's mean to the core, he frequently displays throughout his adventure that he is nowhere near the heartless demon he thinks he is, and is certainly nowhere near Etna's level of cruelity, but at the same time far less kind than Flonne.
* NighInvulnerability: His reaction to Gordon firing a raygun at maximum power in the novels? "It tickles." Etna also claimed that 5 shots from a rocket launcher, 4 missiles at point-blank distance, and 3 X-ray beam cannons did absolutely nothing to him. However, he can still be injured by high-powered and magic-imbued weapons.
** In the games, Laharl is MadeOfDiamond, easily shaking off physical abuse from Flonne and Etna, even heavy abuse after a few hours nap, without a single scratch and talking like he did not even feel pain. [[spoiler:He also has been shown to be able to be in the vicinity of his own planet-busting attack as of ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories''.]]
* NoSympathy: [[YouSeeImDying When Flonne tells him she is dying from the loss of her pendant]] and asks Laharl for help, his response is he does not care and he would not mind using violence against her even in this weak state. Old? Maimed? Diseased? Does not matter! She provokes him to help her nevertheless.
* NobleDemon: Despite his claims to the contrary, he isn't particularly evil, and he never does anything truly heinous (except ''[[BadBoss maybe]]'' [[BadBoss abusing]] [[ButtMonkey Prinnies]]; but hey, everyone does that. Just ask Etna), [[CardCarryingVillain but he denies it adamantly.]]
* NobodyTouchesTheHair: Laharl is a sensitive about his hair.
* NoodleIncident: You never do figure out what that embarrassing picture was about.
* OddFriendship: With Flonne.
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: Laharl sleeps in a coffin, despite not being a vampire.
** Though being just reminded of his father makes him change his mind about killing Hoggmeiser and stealing all of his stuff; that is a lot of positive influence wielded by the guy he supposedly hates. Also, Krichevskoy does not appear to believe Laharl when he claims he hates him in the flashback, he seems to simply dismiss it for an act to appear demonic and that Laharl will have to grow out of it one day.
** Thursday lampshades this when he and Gordon find his mother's picture stashed in his drawer in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite''.
* OlderAlterEgo: Downplayed, but apparent. His female form is taller (even using a larger sprite when deployed) and looks more physically mature than his male form's "approximately 13" appearance, to the point that "she" seems to be roughly equivalent to a 16-year-old human. She also acts more mature, losing a lot of the bratty and hammy aspects of his male form's personality, most notably the SignatureLaugh.
* OneManArmy: Single-handedly made mincemeat out of 2,000,000 spaceships. ''[[NobleDemon While holding back]].'' And in the field, his exclusive skills do huge damage over large areas, and with a good equipment set-up and some healing items, he can solo entire maps until the post-game.
* OrgasmicallyDelicious: When Laharl gets his hands on Super Rare Pudding in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', he expresses its deliciousness with extreme delight and even has a hallucination of himself walking on a road of puddings in space! {{Justified|Trope}} because he had been starving himself to fully enjoy the pudding all day long.
* OrphansOrdeal: When Laharl lost his mother is unknown, but the negative, though unusual, impact it had on him follows him in plain sight like a shadow.
* {{Otaku}}: Laharl loves video games according to ''VideoGame/{{Prinny|CanIReallyBeTheHero}} 2''. The intro for ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'' also has him watching a TV playing the intro.
* OvernightAgeUp: Not only does he undergo a GenderBender overnight, but he's also noticeably more [[BuxomBeautyStandard mature-looking,]] having become a woman rather than a girl-version of himself. It's worth noting that artwork depicts this form as being a head taller than the 4'10'' (149cm) teenage Etna and an NPC will comment on how much taller he's become.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Most promotional art will usually depict him with a sword and his stats and weapon proficiency seem geared toward this. In-game, however, he's decent with any melee-type weapon and bows.
* ParalyzingFearOfSexuality: Only hinted at, but he is completely thrown off by TheTalk, a girl just saying she is going to the bathroom, and the slightest hint that Flonne or Etna thinks of him more than a friend. Combined with hints of HatesBeingTouched, the lifestyle of a CelibateHero, and the fears of [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be Sexy Women]], it's plausible.
* PercussiveMaintenance: This is how Laharl wanted to deal with Mr. DVD Player in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' when Flonne was upset because it will not play her Blu-ray Disc. "I'm sure a smack or two will fix everything."
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He becomes this if you beat him during the story mode of ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'' or if you get his ending in ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject''.
* PickyEater: According to the Prinnies, he tends to complain about his food tasting bland.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: No bigger than 4'5'' (135cm), but is the strongest demon in his own Netherworld nonetheless. Cameo appearances also put him at the higher end of the Overlord power spectrum.
* PreciousPhoto: Laharl has a picture of his mother hidden in his room.
* PrettyLittleHeadshots: Laharl gets shot in the head by Etna at the start of Etna Mode; we never get to see the wound, but the lack of severity of it is magnified by the fact that [[spoiler:Laharl simply sleeps it off]].
* {{Pride}}: Laharl's most prominent flaw.
* PursuingParentalPerils: Being an Overlord, like his father, is the aspiration Laharl burns the most for. He sets out to make an even greater legacy than his old man.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: 1313 years old. 1316 in later games.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: ''Disgaea D2'' is pretty much about him growing into this. When the Krichevskoy Group insists the current state of the Netherworld is due to Celestia's intervention and Flonne and Sicily refuse to believe them, Laharl, showing a surprising amount of patience, tells everyone that he has to investigate the situation first before coming to any conclusions and will retaliate against Celestia should it turn out that the angels are behind everything.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: While he normally has red eyes to begin with, they turn entirely red when he's enraged, such as [[spoiler:when he was about to go on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against Lamington]].
* RedOniBlueOni: Despite their hair colors, he's the red oni to Etna's blue oni.
* RequisiteRoyalRegalia: Not his normal outfit seen above, but the one he is given in NIS's upcoming game BikkurimanKanjyukuHaoh, namely [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Laharl_crown_2_4898.png this]] which includes a big ass crown, [[PimpedOutCape ermine cape]] and... a candy sword?
* RoyalBrat: He initially refused to pay his vassals because that would involve spending his allowance. Also frequently confiscates Etna's desserts for his consumption.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: Laharl trains everyday to surpass his predecessor according to The World of Disgaea, and is very capable and powerful, but he is incapable of performing mundane tasks and providing for his own needs, like food. According to the prinnies, he can't even set the VCR.
%%* SafetyInIndifference
* ScarfOfAsskicking: His scarf flares like flames and it changes like it has a mind of its own. But he clearly has control over it, as [[ExpressiveShirt it changes shape along with his mood]] and he has deliberately puffed it out to make him seem bigger. Most likely, AWizardDidIt.
** [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels The novels]] and the [[Anime/MakaiSenkiDisgaea anime]] takes it even further and have him use it has a shield, [[CapeWings wings]], and a long hand (kinda).
** It's also pointed out in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', when Laharl tells Raspberyl to stop tugging his awesome scarf.
* SingleTear: [[spoiler:For Flonne in the good ending.]]
* SkilledButNaive: Laharl puts all of his soul, mind, and power behind being a good Overlord, but lacks the experience of a leader; he has little to no idea what a good leader is supposed to do, leading him to deem important tasks as beneath him.
* SlaveToPR: He is overly concerned with his reputation and image. It's the main obstacle that keeps him from being honest about his feelings.
* SlouchOfVillainy: He does this in the credits. You can tell by his posture and grin that he has for a long time looked forward to the day that throne was his.
* SmarterThanYouLook: The Prinny that does the commentary in the port for the DS was surprised by Laharl's ample writing skill because he did not know Laharl knew how to spell.
* SmugSuper: Justified in that he really ''is'' as good as he says he is.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: Laharl would much rather fight monsters than be honest about his feelings, and he often gets into disagreements and feuds with his vassals due to his defensiveness and pride.
* SoreLoser: Very much so, especially in ''VideoGame/PhantomBrave'', where he keeps hounding Marona and Ash because he can't accept the fact that he lost to them.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Laharl never truly got over the death of his mother, causing him to lash out at love or anything resembling it. When he's all by himself, Laharl tends to be rather miserable.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Laharl looks like a recolored male version of his mother with antenna, demon ears, and angry eyes.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: RareMaleExample. Laharl's normal outfit consists, more-or-less, of short shorts, boots, and his ScarfOfAsskicking.
* SubordinateExcuse: It is quite obvious that Laharl is fond of Etna; out of all the Demons in the Netherworld, her approval of him means the most. Having her as a vassal suits him quite well, as it requires her to be around him, without him having to actually be a friend. Though Etna seems to think he's just a spoiled brat who only thinks of himself.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: As a girl, Laharl is a lot less outwardly irritable, speaking in a more cool and softer tone compared to his usual loud and eternally angry voice. His change in gender, however, does not remove his nice side.
* SweatDrop: When confused.
* SweetTooth: Particularly in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite''.
* TakeAThirdOption: People who have experienced tragic events often look for someone to blame. With that in mind, one could think Laharl would have had about two options after his mother killed herself to save him. One; [[ItsAllMyFault blame himself for her death]]. Or Two; [[NeverMyFault blaming his mother for abandoning him]]. But he chose a third option; he blamed the very feeling that compelled her to do so, love, and repressed it. By doing so, he avoided sorrow and tainting his perfect image of her.
* TakeMeInstead: [[spoiler:Laharl offering his own life to God in exchange for Flonne's.]]
* TakeOverTheWorld: Laharl wants to take over the Netherworld in order to become the Overlord. He also takes over the Earth in the ''Overthrowing Earth'' ending. Taking over Celestia has crossed his mind too.
* TeamPrimaDonna: Very much so.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: "Call me "Your Highness". I am the [[spoiler:Overlord]] now".
* ThisIsUnforgivable: [[NighInvulnerability Burning Laharl is forgivable]]; messing with his hair is not! Also classifies as an IronicEcho, given that Mid-Boss, [[spoiler:aka. King Krichevskoy]], said it scenes before.
* ToBeAMaster: His initial motivation.
* TookALevelInKindness: Over the course of the original ''Disgaea'', Laharl learns kindness from Flonne and others and by the end of the game [[spoiler:Flonne's pendant doesn't even hurt him despite burning him earlier]].
* TrashOfTheTitans: In ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', Laharl's room is described to be incredibly messy. If the Prinnies clean the room, it won't take long before he messes it up again.
* TrueCompanions: Anyone who hurts his best friends Flonne and Etna are in for a lot of pain. He might not have the guts to say he loves them, but he has no qualms about telling what a bad idea it is to mess with them, because he will not let you get away with it.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type A towards Flonne. May also be one towards Etna, especially in Disgaea 2, though he sometimes acts more casual about it in other places. He's like this with Sicily as well. A prominent exampe being when Sicily wanted to go to a concert for Lanzarote. Laharl outright refuses without even considering it. The moment Sicily sounds dejected, Laharl completely changes his mind without explanation, saying they're all going. When Sicily thanks him, he plays it off as good to know about the enemy, and kept playing angry with Sicily being happy.
* TsurimeEyes: Amd rather glaring ones at that.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Laharl is usualy quick to declare minor actions to be [[ThisIsUnforgivable unforgivable]], but when it turns out that Etna poisoned him in his sleep and used him as bait for her revenge against Maderas, he instantly forgives her after it is over, proclaims that he does not mind that traitorous and selfish aspect of her, and that he needs a someone like her to be his right-hand demon.
* UnableToCry: He claims he is unable to feel sadness and has never cried before. While this could be an example of UnreliableExpositor, [[spoiler:when he finally sheds a single tear, he is honestly surprised]]. This means he has not cried for at least as long as he can remember.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: One might not think this would apply to Laharl, but according to his description in ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject'', he is loved by his subjects.
** [[spoiler:Averted in ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'', where almost all of his closest vassals have left him, including the servant Prinnies, during his feud with Etna.]]
** ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness'' (apparently set in between the first and second games) reveals that almost no one even ''knows'' he's the overlord, and his own father's vassals are conspiring against him for being an InadequateInheritor. He gains their respect, but it requires saving the entire Netherworld.
* UnscrupulousHero: While he portrays himself as a VillainProtagonist, he really falls more around this. He has no particularly heroic goals (aside from becoming the Overlord, he has no consistent objectives), and his evil is more at PokeThePoodle levels, but between Etna's prodding, Flonne's begging, and the plot coming to his door, he ends up generally being a force for good in the end. Just don't tell him that.
* UnwantedHarem: In [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels the novels]], both Gordon and Jennifer's daughter and Flonne's little sister are in love with him, and even Etna and Flonne have a crush on him (rather surprising, since whether or not their game counterpart feel this way is VERY debatable). And the list does not end there: the girls and [[{{Squick}} women]] who want to get into his shorts get more numerous as the novel series goes on, to Laharl's major frustration.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: It's hinted that Laharl has not always had the attitude he has now, and was a more loving child when his mother was still alive.
* VerbalWeakness: Is crippled by pure-sounding words of encouragement.
* VillainProtagonist: This is definitely what he seems to be pushed as at first, with his demeanor and goals and his tendency to only let up when his allies beg of him, but ultimately seems more anti-heroic towards the end of the game when [[spoiler:he shows compassion.]] Perhaps he is a deconstruction of both these types of protagonist.
* VillainSong: [[http://www.animelyrics.com/game/disgaea/laharlsanbika.htm Ode to Laharl,]] his theme song. Spoofed -- the lyrics are full of deeds that would more easily describe [[PokeThePoodle Poking The Poodle]] instead of [[KickTheDog Kicking The Dog]].
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He apparently prefers to wear his giant scarf over putting on a shirt.
* WarriorPrince: He's a Prince, later Overlord, of the Netherworld, who fights on the front lines against invaders.
* WeaksauceWeakness: He is violently allergic to well-endowed women and optimistic sayings, particularly the phrase "eternal love." He gets over it eventually.
* WellDoneSonGuy: While he'd never admit it out loud, Laharl seeks Etna's approval above all else.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: He slowly learns to care about his friends.
* WhoDares: "What fool dares awaken me, the great Laharl?"
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: When shocked.
* TheWorfEffect: After dominating the ''Disgaea 2'' party, he gets [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] by Rozalin's SuperpoweredEvilSide, Zenon, showing how powerful she is.
* WorthyOpponent: Regards Xenolith as one, admiring his strength and conviction, but not backing down when it's time to defeat him.
* YouKilledMyFather:
** [[spoiler:Laharl is said to be the only one who has canonically defeated Baal, and continues to try to defeat him for good in several cameos. Why he bothers is not clear, but what we do know is that Baal was the cause of his father's death. Interestingly enough, Baal will always show up as an OptionalBoss whenever Laharl makes an appearance.]]
** [[spoiler:Laharl's version of the battle against Baal in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'' makes it clear. The victory ending has Etna congratulating Laharl for finally avenging Krichevskoy, while his last words in the defeat ending are essentially "I failed you, old man."]]
* YoungConqueror: Switch out regular, "human" idealism with demonic idealism, and more thoughtful strategy with brute-force tactics. Though given that this is Franchise/{{Disgaea}}, ViolenceReallyIsTheAnswer.

[[caption-width-right:270:The Great Beauty Queen.]]
TheLancer and Laharl's second in command. Etna is a demon who has been working at the castle since before the Prince was born and not particularly impressed by his immaturity. She is also highly ambitious and has the tendency to transparently plot Laharl's overthrow, if only to keep him in line.
----
* ACupAngst: She's very insecure about her lack of cleavage.
* AgeInappropriateDress: She might be 1470, but she looks no older than 14, so her {{Stripperiffic}} [[HellBentForLeather black leather]] outfit is doomed to turn some heads.
* AlmightyJanitor: Technically, Etna is considered a "Demon Lord" class; she "hacked" it to "Beauty Queen". However, it is pointed out in ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'' that her strength is the same as an Overlord's.
* AntiHero: Almost completely heartless in the beginning, though played for laughs. She mellows a little after she regains [[spoiler:her memories]].
* ArsonMurderAndAdmiration[=/=]ArsonMurderAndLifeSaving: "You tried to poison me in my sleep... You used me as bait for your revenge... What kind of vassal are you? ...But! But, I don't mind that side of you. A true demon is always full of ambition and aims for the top. As King, I'll need a right-hand demon like you under my command." Laharl to Etna.
* AwwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Though she thinks Laharl will never measure up to his father as Overlord, deep down, she ensures he is on the right track whenever it feels like he's veering off track.
* BadassAdorable: Sadistic personality aside, she's a cute young-looking demon with power on par with that of an Overlord.
* BadBoss: Even as far as demons go, Etna is an infamously terrible boss to the Prinny Squad, and they are terrified of her anger. She thinks nothing of throwing them at enemies to detonate them as an attack, occasionally sits on one for a seat, and withholds their pay on a whim. She also makes it a rule that if they lose a fight she'll kill them herself, telling them this so they'll fight harder out of desperation.
* BarefootPoverty: As a child, along with rags.
* BattleCry: "Drop dead! Punk!" "Call me queen." "Seeya! Go! Drop dead!" "Punk!" "Eat this!".
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The main reason for her loyalty to the late King Krichevskoy. She also tends to be much nicer to Laharl when he's nice to her.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Between her and Laharl, especially in ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'' and ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite''.
* BeneathTheMask: Etna's Diary shows the player a hidden, morose layer to Etna. For example, after Maderas' defeat, Laharl forgives Etna. Up front, Etna acts very nonchalant about the whole thing, but if you read her diary afterwards, she was convinced that Laharl was going to kill her and doesn't understand why he forgave her so easily.
* BerserkButton: EXCUSE ME FOR BEING [[ACupAngst FLAT!!]]
** Don't touch her sweets, especially if your name is Laharl. And if she notices you with her panties...
** Krichevskoy is practically her father to her, so taking his name in vain is a very good way to piss her off, as Garungun finds out when he tries to make a random Prinny the new Krichevskoy.
--> ''Keep playing with Krichevskoy's name, and you'll suffer a very slow and painful death, got it?!''
* BondageIsBad: "Not that I have a bottle fetish or anything."
* BrilliantButLazy: Etna is both powerful and wise enough to be the Overlord, but as Etna Mode (where she ultimately decides it is not worth it) and the Prinny games (where she leaves the position open even though Laharl is a Prinny) have exemplifed, is too irresponsible and lacks the drive to do it. She does get the job in the anime and in the normal ending of the game... and then complains about it being so much work!
* CatSmile: The shape of her mouth when smiling.
* TheChewToy: When she joins you in the second game. She even remarks that she's had nothing but bad luck after encountering Adell and company.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Etna's diary has some very interesting things to say about Laharl's father and mother...
* ComedicSociopathy: Objectively, she engages in some really cruel acts. But somehow it only ever seems to be directed at {{Chew Toy}}s or characters who are MadeOfIron.
* ConflictingLoyalty: Etna has great loyalty to King Krichevskoy, so great in fact that it remained with her even when she lost her memory. But she also made a promise to him; to protect Laharl and make sure he becomes a great Overlord, which may or may not be more than Etna can stand.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Bright red hair and bright red eyes.
* CuteLittleFangs: She has one, fittingly for a young(-looking) demon with a mischievous personality.
* CynicIdealistDuo: The cynic to Flonne's idealist. Flonne firmly believes that even demons are capable of love while Etna scoffs at the very idea. Flonne does get Etna to lighten up at least a tiny bit on the subject.
* DarkActionGirl: In the games.
* DeadpanSnarker: Very sarcastic and snarky, at all times.
* DragonAscendant: [[spoiler:In some endings, and the end of the anime.]]
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: A minor example, but despite being shown using guns in a few cutscenes and outright specializing them ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'', she only has a C in Gun proficiency in the first game, and it's the lowest out of all the weapons. Every game afterwards give her an A in Guns.
* EasilyForgiven: Laharl actually compliments her for going behind his back and using him. As detailed above under BeneathTheMask, Etna brushes it off but in secret doesn't understand how he could forgive her so easily.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler:In ''Etna mode'', despite her usual treatment of Flonne, who she found annoying, she's disgusted when she finds how Vulcanus manipulated and almost killed her after gaining her trust.]]
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: PlayedWith in regards to Laharl, as while he's not "good" per se, she still struggles to understand some of his nicer moments. The best example of this is after her betrayal is revealed, Etna acts calm about the situation up front but her diary reveals that she was sure he would kill her and doesn't understand why he spared her.
* EvilRedhead: Why don't you ask the Prinnies what they think Etna's place on the morality scale is?
* ExpressiveAccessory: The Prinny bags she has in ''Disgaea 2''. For example, when Etna is angry, the visible bag will look scared.
%%* ExpressiveEars
* FauxActionGirl: In the anime, in which she also needs to rely on Laharl to do any fighting she wants. This is in spite of her being perfectly capable of fighting, although she finally joins fights for real (albeit offscreen) during the last episode against a bunch of demons summoned by Vulcanus.
* FetishizedAbuser: Her abusive nature toward the Prinnies and anyone who pisses her off is played to add to her overall appeal...but also for laughs.
* FilleFatale: This seems to be the type of woman Etna is, and had she been older-looking she could have been a FemmeFatale.
* FieryRedhead: Especially in ''Disgaea 2''.
* FistPump: Etna uses this pose when she is pissed off.
* FriendToAllChildren: Etna appears to have an easy time befriending children like Aramis and Hanako, and seems to genuinely care about them. This extends to the [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels novels]], even though Aramis does not appear in them, where Etna shows concern for Laharl's cousin Shas.
* GirlishPigtails: If anything, they indicate her nature as a {{tsundere}} and all-around almighty brat.
* GottaKillThemAll: Etna has a "To Kill List", guess which character is on the top?[[note]]"That spot is reserved for the person I could kill over and over again, and I'd never get enough! Hahaha!"[[/note]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Etna was envious of the Queen receiving all the love from her husband, and then of the unconditional love King Krichevskoy felt for Laharl and even [[TheResenter hated him]].
-->''I hated the Prince... I envied the Prince...''
* GroinAttack: Etna told Flonne about the time she kicked a man "right there" in a passing comment.
* HappyEndingMassage:
** In Laharl's cameo in [[VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero Prinny]], Etna seems to reference this when she claims that Laharl is going to massage her ''SO hard'', adding in that she might teach him some ''new tricks''. [[{{Squick}} Laharl was currently a Prinny atoning for his sins after a reincarnation]].
** She makes a Prinny massage her in the Drama CD as well. If you don't know what is going on, it sounds just like what you would think it would sound like.
* HairstyleInertia: [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/935234_20070329_screen040_5129.png Young Etna]] also had [[GirlishPigtails pigtails]].
* HellBentForLeather: She's always wearing something leather.
%%* HellishPupils
* HerCodeNameWasMarySue: She really loves doing this with her crazy episode previews. Laharl and Vyers provide snark, whereas Flonne plays along and '''CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH!''' tries to steal the spotlight.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: Etna casually snarks about killing Laharl and endlessly abuses her Prinnies even as she saves the Netherworld.
* HiddenDepths: Etna gets very melancholic while she reminisces about the past and writes in her diary.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Sure, she'll stab Laharl in the back ''some day'' (it's in her job description as a Demon, after all), but that aside, she's genuinely fond of him and Flonne, who are for all intents and purposes her best friends. Her friendship with Laharl, due to his own HiddenHeartOfGold status, however, often leads to them being VitriolicBestBuds anyways.
** Similarly, in ''Disgaea D2'', [[spoiler:despite brushing off Xenolith's claim that she's his sister and generally acting like she doesn't care about him, she chews him out for accepting death when he is dragged into the earth]].
* HopelessBossFight: When fighting her in ''Disgaea 2'', she's level 1000 at a time where the player probably won't have anybody be much higher than level 20.
* HyperCompetentSidekick: While Laharl isn't really stupid, he's quite immature and brash. Etna, while not without her own flaws, is more level-headed and intelligent. Laharl, to his credit, recognizes and acknowledges this, and decides it's why she's an excellent vassal.
* HypocriticalHumor: Despite how incredibly competent Etna may be, her remarks on certain occasions can be outright conflicting. For instace:
** Look for BondageIsBad, then look how she actively shows off her collar as her signature motif.
** {{Stripperiffic}} and [[{{Narcissist}} essentially tells herself that she's a Beauty Queen]], yet couldn't [[HeroicSelfDeprecation get herself some attention in the next ten seconds of love and passion]]l such as Raspberyl's delinquent advertising.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: While Flonne serves this role in the first game, it leans more towards Etna in the sequel. [[spoiler:Laharl is plenty concerned about her in the game's ending, at least... [[{{Tsundere}} in his own way]]]].
* JackOfAllStats: Just like Laharl in the base game, she has 100% aptitude in all fields and an A or B-rank with all weapons except for a C-rank with Guns. Sequels more decisively establish her as specializing in spears and physical stats.
* JerkassHasAPoint: As terrible as she is to them, she makes it a point that if one isn't strict with the Prinnies, they devolve into {{Lazy Bum}}s.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:In a possible BadEnding in ''D2''.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:Maderas targeted and stole all of her memories related to King Krichevskoy and her promise to blackmail her into working for him, while leaving enough information to know they're important to make sure she complies.]]
* LittleMissBadass: Her strength is on par with most adult overlords, despite being physically and mentally around fourteen at most.
* LittleMissSnarker: Thanks to her upbringing she is [[WiseBeyondTheirYears Wise Beyond Her Years]] and a notable DeadpanSnarker.
* LovingAShadow: It's pretty clear that Etna adored Laharl's father, and that she appreciates the moments Laharl acts like him and tries to make Laharl even more like him. One could argue this is because King Krichevskoy was a very good Overlord, and that Etna wants Laharl to be the same, but when Etna displays less-than-minimal care for the lives of her unknown/known fellow demons, [[ShipTease it makes her conversations with Laharl stand out.]]
* MagicSkirt: Etna invokes this by belting the skirt to her hips.
* MoralityChain: Without both Laharl and the memories of King Krichevskoy, Etna would be an even more unpleasant person, as shown in Etna Mode. With them around, she's a mere HeroicComedicSociopath.
* MyEyesAreLeaking: Etna starts to cry in Etna Mode when she realizes she broke the promise she made to King Krichevskoy, because she killed Laharl instead of protecting him, like she promised she would.
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: In ''2''. Notably, when the party tries to talk [[spoiler:Rozalin/True Zenon]] down from killing them all, Etna makes none of their appeals to love and friendship, in fact claims not to care if they ''do'' all perish, but instead poses the argument that the foe is foolish to let a past self's memories dictate how they'll conduct their reincarnated life.
-->'''Adell''': You aren't alone. You have friends that care about you. ... And Etna.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Etna get this way when she remembers the promise she made to the King, that she would protect Laharl, in Etna Mode. A milder version happens throughout Etna's diary, when she remembers the promise and expresses guilt for just poisoning Laharl:
-->''Even though my memories were stolen, I still broke my promise to the King... King Krichevskoy... You must be angry with me...''
* {{Narcissist}}: Not as strong and conceivable as Laharl and his father King Krichevskoy, but she is still very haughty and self-dignified, especially towards the Prinnies.
* NestedOwnership: Etna is Laharl's vassal (although she never actually listens to him) while also having the Prinny Squad under her command.
-->'''Laharl:''' Etna's vassals are my vassals.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Firmly entrenched in the "Mean" portion of this trope, contrasting Flonne's nice and Laharl's In-Between. She's every bit as cruel as she portrays herself to be, and her tempers frighten almost everyone around her. As displayed best in Etna Mode, Etna is an ''even bigger'' bitch than normal when Laharl isn't around. That said, she does have people she cares about, but [[{{Tsundere}} she'd never openly show it]].
* OddFriendship: Despite being a love-obsessed angel, Etna is best friends with the angel Flonne.
* OnTheNext: Etna voices the between-chapter previews in the first game, often putting herself as the star player.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In general, when Etna starts acting serious, she's either really pissed or really frightened, and other characters freak out when they realize this.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Her theme song claims she'll sneak to your bedside by night and show you her gleaming fangs and that when she is tired of [[BloodSucking drinking your blood]] she'll throw you away. Averted in that even despite the imagery, she's not really a vampire.
* PaletteSwap: When flowers from Celestia start blooming in the Netherworld and cause Laharal to turn into a woman, Etna is also affected. They turn all the red in her design blue. Upon actully looking at herself and noticing, she declares "What the hell? I look like Player Two". A bill in the dark assembly allows the player to turn her back into "Etna P2", though the desgin is entirely cosmetic. Later games referance this by having blue be one of her default alternate Palettes or as seperate unit in RPG.
* ParentalSubstitute: Under King Krichevskoy, to the point that his narcissism draws [[LikeASonToMe her Beauty Queen demands as a persona]].
* PhlebotinumOverload: [[spoiler:In ''Disgaea D2'', Xenolith feared this would happen to Etna when she was young, so he used the Artifact of Absolute Death to drain away her power. The trope is played straight in one of the bad endings, leading to her death. It's thankfully averted in the True ending, where she is able to contain her power, though she ends up unconscious for months.]]
* PickyEater: She does not even consider Chilled Noodle Salad to be food.
* PrecociousCrush: Flashbacks in Etna mode and entries in her diary reveal that she developed one as a child [[spoiler:when King Krichevskoy, the first person to show her kindness, took her in]].
* PrehensileTail: She used it as a third hand in the trailer for the anime.
* RagsToRoyalty: As a child, she wore rags, and in multiple endings she becomes the [[spoiler:Overlord]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: 1470 years old.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue oni to Laharl's red. Ironic considering Etna's hair is red, and Laharl's hair is blue.
* RegretfulTraitor: She's really not happy about being used against Laharl.
* TheResenter: Etna used to hate Laharl's mother [[GreenEyedMonster because of King Krichevskoy's deep feelings for her]].
* SarcasticDevotee: She is the only one of the late king's vassals immediately willing to serve Laharl, and she's quite sarcastic to him, since he's a RoyalBrat. Even though [[spoiler:she uses him as bait to stop Maderas]], she genuinely feels guilty about doing so, since [[spoiler:she promised the king, the only person to ever show her kindness, that she'd protect his son]].
** In Disgaea 2, she leaves him after a fight, but she returns to him after Flonne gets them to make up and apologize.
* ServileSnarker: She's Laharl's loyal vassal, but endlessly mocks and insults him.
* SiblingYinYang: [[spoiler:To Xenolith. While he's [[TheStoic calm]] and [[NobleDemon noble]], Etna is [[BadBoss mean]]-[[HeroicComedicSociopath spirited]] and [[FieryRedhead feisty]].]]
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: You'd think a girl as cruel and wicked as Etna would prefer someone in the same vein, but you'd be wrong. She loved the late King for his kindness and tends to be far more appreciative of Laharl when his very obscured kind heart shines through.
* SlaveCollar: When she was little.
* ShipperOnDeck: She enjoys teasing Laharl about his feelings for Flonne, and in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', goes out of her way to avert a CannotSpitItOut situation between the two, much to Laharl's annoyance and protests.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Etna is very unpleasant as a whole, but when she writes in her diary, she's surprisingly melancholic.
* TheStarscream: She hints at this, at least. Nothing ever comes of it, in part because it'd be too much of a hassle for her to become Overlord.
** In the "Etna Heroine" ending, she [[spoiler:kills Maderas, Flonne when she attempts to stop her, and later Laharl]].
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Microtop, ZettaiRyouiki, and a SlaveCollar.
* SubordinateExcuse: Despite her free-spirited attitude, Etna has lived her life in voluntary servitude. She adored King Krichevskoy, and being Laharl's vassal is good way to keep an eye on him, making sure he doesn't mess up.
* SweatDrop: When confused.
* SweetTooth: Etna has a particularly bad one, especially in ''VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero'' and ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite''. Woe to anyone who eats her pudding. She is pretty high-class about sweets too.
* TearsOfRemorse: [[spoiler:Etna cries at the end of Etna Mode.]]
* TokenEvilTeammate: In [[VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories the sequel,]] since you're playing as heroes there. In other games, she's often the Token Evil(er) Teammate.
* TooImportantToWalk: Etna sits on a sedan chair carried by the Prinnies in her boss fight in ''VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero''.
* TooManyBelts: She has two belts on each boot, one on each arm, and four stitched to her skirt.
* TookALevelInJerkass: While she was never the nicest character, she's certainly far more irritable in ''Disgaea 2'' and later games. She dials it back in ''Disgaea D2''.
* TranquilFury: When Rozalin points out her flat chest in ''Disgaea 2'', she calmly cracks her knuckles, starts her theme music, and ''[[ATwinkleInTheSky punches a prinny into orbit]]''.
* TheTrickster: A very capable deceiver who openly questions and mocks authority (unless it is a ReasonableAuthorityFigure), encourages impulse and enthusiasm, destroys convention and complacency, and promotes chaos and unrest.
* {{Tsundere}}:
** Towards Laharl's father, and maybe to Laharl as well. Unfortunately, it'd be a classic example of BelligerentSexualTension. [[spoiler:In ''Disgaea 2'', she even acts like a PsychoExGirlfriend after getting into a feud with Laharl.]]
--> '''Etna:''' W-Well, if I didn't care, I wouldn't hang out with him.
** [[spoiler:At the end of ''D2'', she's acting this way about her brother.]]
* TheVillainSucksSong: Her theme song, [[http://www.animelyrics.com/game/disgaea/etnaboogie.htm "Etna Boogie",]] calls her a "cruel, cowardly, cold-blooded, heartless, wicked woman."
** Then again, [[BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad these are the sort of traits that demons admire]].
* WeaponTombstone: [[spoiler:Her Elder Spear is used as one in a possible BadEnding in D2.]]
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: Etna asks Flonne this in Disgaea 3 when they start arguing over who gets to be Laharl's "wife" when they pretend to be Mao's parents.
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: When shocked.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:The final levels of ''D2'' reveal she has massive power contained within her, on the level of an Overlord or even higher, but it was sealed by the Artifact of Absolute Death. In the good ending, the Artifact is destroyed, and she becomes able to control the power, which is likely the source for her Dead End Chaos attack and higher power levels in sequels.]]
* ZergRush: Chaotic Ordina summons several prinnies to support Etna. [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Be careful when throwing them.]]

"{{Love Freak}}" and self-appointed [[GuardianAngel guardian angel]] of Laharl. Originally sent to the Netherworld to assassinate the late King Kricheveskoy, she decided to stick around in order to discover if demons were [[DarkIsNotEvil inherently evil]]. She is generally ditzy and absurdly idealistic, though with a few {{Berserk Button}}s that lead one to wonder just ''how'' good she really is. Flonne is also a huge anime and {{Toku}} {{Otaku}}, so much so that she actually ends up being the ''most'' GenreSavvy team member despite not being particularly smart.
----
* ACupAngst: Pointing her chest out seems to be the only thing that can truly piss her off in the first game.
** Not just in the first game, as she gets into a pretty heated argument with Etna and Artina about breast size in ''Disgaea 4''.
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:Being turned into a flower in the ending can be interpreted as this. Rasperyl Mode in the third game would somewhat mitigate this, as it shows Vulcanus alive, albeit as a Flora Monster. Not the most dignified of existences, but by no means one of unceasing torment.]]
* AngelicBeauty: She's an angel, and a cute young girl.
* ApologeticAttacker: "Oops, pardon me!"
* AscendedDemon: [[spoiler:After falling, becomes an Archangel by ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}''.]] It's implied she can go back and forth between forms at will.
** In ''D2'', [[spoiler:she is temporarily made an Archangel in order to find missing angels in the Netherworld]].
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: FLONNEZILLA!
* BadassAdorable: An Angel Trainee from Celestia that can fight alonside Laharl and Etna -- she qualifies with flying colors.
* BattleCry: "Lord, give me strength." "Sorry, I won't hold back!" "Ultimate attack! Lord, give me strength." "Get Ready!".
* BerserkButton: The very first time in the games that Flonne ''ever'' gets mad is "EXCUSE ME FOR BEING [[ACupAngst FLAT!!]]
** She also responds very angrily to being called any variation of "villainess."
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She can get quite violent when her patience is pushed too far.
* BlankWhiteEyes: When confused, along with SweatDrop.
* BlushSticker: They serve to make her look even more adorable.
* BrutalHonesty: She rather gleefully tells Fuka in Disgaea 4's Fuka and Desco Show DLC that after all the crap they've done (including taking over the world), Fuka is never going to be able to pay off her sins and reincarnate.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She is a very [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} flaky]] [[{{Otaku}} otaku]], but she gives Seraph Lamington the results he wants. She continues to be one as an Archangel, to the dismay of [[VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten Artina]], who often wonders how the Seraph and the other Archangels accept her behavior.
* CharacterExaggeration: Flonne is the victim of this in [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels the novels]], see {{Clingy Jealous Girl}} below. She also goes so far as to call Laharl a pervert, [[CelibateHero even though she of all people should know him better]]. Also, her later game appearances dial-up her otaku-ness.
* ChekhovsGun: Her pendant and its ability to react to evil comes up in the final stage and ending again.
* TheChosenOne: [[spoiler:Chosen to unite the Netherworld and Celestia by [[PhysicalGod Seraph]] [[BigGood Lamington]].]]
* CleavageWindow: Though it goes mostly unnoticed thanks to the size of the window and [[UsefulNotes/{{Pettanko}} her breasts]].
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** In the novels, Flonne is very obviously in love with Laharl. She gets extremely jealous if Laharl gets close to another girl -- whether Laharl likes said girl does not matter. A rather jarring difference from her game counterpart, who would do anything to [[LoveFreak spread love all across the universe]] and even volunteers to be Laharl and Etna's [[TheMatchmaker matchmaker]] in ''Disgaea 2''. She is still a love freak in the novels, but the universe won't get Laharl without a fight, it seems.
** The DLC cut scenes in ''Disgaea D2'' hints at this. She misunderstands Rozalin saying that she is the daughter of an Overlord as "I am the daughter of Laharl", at which point she threatens Laharl that she'll interrogate him until he spills who the mother is. Sicily is understandably scared. And in the Pram DLC, when Pram makes a joke about being romantically interested in Laharl, Flonne notably has the largest exclamation mark bubble over her, and gets angry at Laharl.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Made apparent as soon as she meets Laharl.
--> '''Flonne:''' "Nice to meet you! I'm an assassin. Whoops. I wasn't supposed to say that."
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: All of Flonne's beliefs are proven to be right in the good ending. In a more minor example, she apparently believes that ninjas are known for saying "Nin nin nin!". By ''Disgaea 4'', they actually ''do''.
* CollectorOfTheStrange: Flonne collects stuff that an {{Otaku}} normally collects, such as {{Toku}} movies and series, but she also fancies bigger stuff like giant space ships (she claimed Gargantua), space cruisers (the [[VideoGame/TrinityUniverse Mk. III]]) and [[HumongousMecha giant robots]] ([[spoiler:the Great Flonzor X]]).
** ''Disgaea 7'' reveals that she's not above getting other angels to collect these things for her either. [[spoiler:She sent fellow otaku Ceefore and Nitra to Hinomoto to get her unique Toku goods from there... [[SkewedPriorities And to find out what's going on with all the missing souls]].]]
* CoolBigSis: Flonne is naturally this to Sicily because Laharl is...well, [[AloofBigBrother who]] [[{{Tsundere}} he is]] and Etna doesn't really care. It helps that Flonne and Sicily have [[{{Otaku}} similar interests.]]
** Heck, in one of the in-stage conversations in ''Disgaea D2'', [[spoiler:Sicily accidentally calls Flonne "Mommy". This, combined with her taking care of Sicily and being often compared to Laharl's Mom in the first game, Flonne might actually be Sicily's ParentalSubstitute.]]
* CosplayOtakuGirl: [[Music/BlueOysterCult Go, go, Flonnezilla!]]
** [[spoiler:"On Netherworld soil, where evil looms, an ephemeral flower blooms! [[MagicalGirlWarrior Pure Flonne the Awakened Angel!]]"]]
* CursedWithAwesome: In the Good Ending, [[spoiler:Flonne gets turned into a fallen angel. Which means she can now live legitimately in the Netherworld, and stay with Laharl. The fact that it has zero impact on her personality helps.]]
* CuteAndPsycho: When she gets angry over something, she ''bites''.
* CuteLittleFangs: As a [[spoiler:fallen angel]].
* TheCutie: Sweet, lovable and innocent.
* CynicIdealistDuo: The idealist to Etna's cynic. She tries to see the best in everyone (including Laharl and Etna), while the more weary Etna feels Flonne's idealism is strongly misplaced in the Netherworld.
* DefaceOfTheMoon: [[spoiler:Pure Flonne's ultimate attack involves her using a laser to carve the word "Love" (overlapping a heart) onto the surface of the moon.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Downplayed in ''Disgaea D2''. She gets just as much screentime as Laharl and Etna do, but other than [[spoiler:using temporary archangel powers to find out where the missing angels are]] for a single chapter, doesn't make any major contributions to the story.
* TheDitz: Though in her defense, she is quite capable in battle, her "unconventional" methods tends to work, she's open-minded, understanding, a fairly fast learner, and quick to admit her own mistakes when she is proven wrong.
* DoesNotKnowHerOwnStrength: When Flonne gets excited, she has no grasp of her own strength, which is bad news for anyone she gets violent towards while influenced by a strong emotion. It's a good thing Laharl is MadeOfDiamond.
* DumbBlonde: Ironically, most of her methods of attack relies on intelligence and she will most likely be one of your best mages for most of the game. Also, outside of the original game, where all the plot characters have the same growth, she has a very high intelligence growth. Of course, she's smarter than she appears anyways.
* EccentricMentor: To [[spoiler:Artina]].
* EdibleThemeNaming: She's named after [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flan Flan]].
* ElegantGothicLolita: Her angel trainee outfit is arguably this; lots of ribbons, corset with embroidery, blouse, collar, detached sleeves, bloomers, golden earrings, and Mary Jane shoes.
* EveryProperLadyShouldCurtsy: Flonne does this when she meets Laharl for the first time as a goodbye greeting. Spoofed in that it comes just after a promised second attempt at assassinating him.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: After her fall, her blue hair ribbon is replaced with a red one, and she gains a one-piece swimsuit. [[LoveFreak Her personality]] doesn't change along with it. Oh, and she gains [[{{CuteLittleFangs}} fangs]] like Laharl and the other demons.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: She requests that her friends be spared any punishment from Master Lamington, and when he agrees to it, allows herself to be turned into a flower with no regrets.
* FallenAngel: She's constantly afraid that associating with demons is a bad influence on her and she'll become this. She does in the ending, though it doesn't exactly stick. Though she's more willingly impulsive and violent as a Fallen Angel, her kindness and especially her love for...[[LoveFreak love]] have not changed in the slightest.
* FanGirl: Any time heroes [[InTheNameOfTheMoon introduce themselves]] to fight Laharl, this results in a hilariously [[{{Squee}} gleeful reaction]] from her.
* FireballEyeballs: When she gets ticked off or really excited.
* FishOutOfWater: Gets placed in a world completely unfamiliar to her, but catches on rather quickly and [[AnAesop learns many new things]].
* {{Flanderization}}: She's ''far'' more upbeat about love and her {{Otaku}} tendencies (especially the latter) in her future Disgaea appearances, likely because becoming a demon gives her more freedom to be nuts in the Netherworld.
* FlowerMotifs: "How beautiful! *giggle* I love these flowers. They are simple, yet so bright and lovely...[[{{Foreshadowing}} I want to be like]] [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor these flowers]]...".
* FlyingBroomstick: In [[VideoGame/LaPucelle La Pucelle: Ragnarok]], she uses her wand to fly like if it was one.
* TheFundamentalist: Inverted. Flonne actually questions the beliefs the majority of her kind believes in before she came to stand face to face with the "enemy", and takes her sweet time to evaluate the situation when she does.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: In ''Disgaea Infinite'', despite becoming a Fallen Angel by the end of the first game, she dons her Angel Trainee look because she's taking a test to become an angel once more. This is also an excuse to avoid making new character shots for her Fallen Angel form.
* GenkiGirl: Flonne is usually energetic or enthusiastic, but not exceedingly like most GenkiGirl.
* GlassCannon: Her magic can deal a lot of damage, but she's not so good at taking hits, though she can heal herself.
* TheGlomp: In the Drama CD, Flonne practices to a recital, but when it's time, no one shows up. She is driven to tears, but sings her heart out even without an audience. When she's done, someone starts to clap. Turns out Laharl and Etna came after all. This touches her so greatly that she starts to cry tears of joy and glomps Laharl as hard as she can.
* GlurgeAddict: Show hints of this, especially when Laharl mentions bluntly that his father is dead and she starts to cry.
* GoThroughMe: In ''Etna The Heroine Ending'', Flonne tries to protect Maderas from Etna in this manner. It does not go well for her.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: From her [[spoiler:FallenAngel]] outfit to her angel trainee outfit in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' and to her Archangel outfit in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}''. Also [[spoiler:Pure Flonne]] in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2''.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: As befits her LoveFreak nature.
* TheHeart: Par for the course when you are the LoveFreak and angel among demons, regardless of the sex ratio. Or at least she tries to be, with varied results.
* HeartBeatDown: Her healing spell [[ThePowerOfLove Power of Love]] and attack skill Holy Arrows which is a volley of explosive arrows shaped like hearts when she is a [[spoiler:FallenAngel]].
* HeyYou: Laharl only addresses her as "You" or "Love Freak" for practically half the game. Flonne even calls him out on it in Episode 8. By the end of the same episode, [[spoiler:after being briefly reunited with his mother]], he finally starts calling her by her name.
* HiddenBuxom: It's not apparent because of the clothes she wears, but Flonne is actually quite a bit bigger than Etna is. Her [[spoiler:Pure Flonne]] form makes it more obvious. She likely only complains when Laharl calls her flat because she still doesn't measure up to the Succubi and Nekomata of the Netherworld.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Flonne spends much of her introductory assassination attempt pretending to be a ninja. A ninja that ''[[SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud says sound effects out loud]]''.
* HollywoodToneDeaf: In the Drama [=CD=]s, Laharl likens Flonne's singing to being murdered.
* HolyHandGrenade: Her special moves "Holy Arrows" and "Divine Ray".
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: In regards to Etna. Even though Etna plays tricks on her, she refuses to see Etna's more wicked characteristics. Though Flonne is not without reason, because Etna does make sure to hide things from her, as Flonne is a MoralityPet to her and Flonne would get on her case if she found out about her deeds, like how much Etna really pays the Prinnies.
** Subverted in regards to [[ObviouslyEvil Vulcanus]]. Although she's the only who can't tell he's evil just by looking at him, she still figures it out quickly once he shows his KnightTemplar attitude.
* HotBlooded: Flonne is very passionate about love and heroism, especially in her VideoGame/TrinityUniverse cameo.
* HumongousMecha: [[spoiler:Her Great Flonzor X in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}'']].
* ImpliedDeathThreat: Her treat to Laharl that she will assassinate him if demons are really incapable of love.
-->''And if necessary I'll carry out my original mission with a new target!''
** In Flonne's Tragedy Ending, she follows up on this claim and [[AssholeVictim defeats Laharl with her blazing flame of justice because he tried to kill Hoggmeiser]][[note]]and killed at least fifty allies, which is required to get this ending[[/note]].
* ImpliedLoveInterest: [[spoiler:In the Normal Ending, Laharl sacrifices his life to restore Flonne before coming back as a Prinny; other endings have this to a lesser degree. This isn't taking into account the massive amounts of ShipTease, even including Lamington himself.]]
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Subverted. Flonne learns a whole lot about herself from her visit to the Netherworld, particularly about her hidden deviant and easily tempted side.
* InformedAttribute: She may not look it, but her breasts are as big as [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Rin Tohsaka's]] as stated in the World of Disgaea book (77 metric). Which isn't huge by any means, but it's a far cry from her "almost as flat as Etna" treatment in the games.
* TheIngenue: A competent one who can take care of herself.
* InnocentBlueEyes: In contrast to the cynical Laharl and Etna, who have red eyes, Flonne is innocent and sweet with blue eyes.
* InsistentTerminology: "It's not a DVD, it's a Blu-ray!"
* InterspeciesFriendship: With Laharl and Etna.
* {{Irony}}: In the {{Light Novel}}s, she's the only one of the trio with a sibling. As of ''D2'', she's the only one in canon who ''doesn't''.
* PopCulturedBadass: She can keep up with her demonic comrades just fine, and is a huge fan of mechas, sentai series and monster movies.
* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler:In most endings. Sometimes subverted, sometimes [[TearJerker not]].]]
* TheKlutz: Laharl and Etna thinks she is this, [[InformedAttribute but she has never been shown doing something extremely clumsy]], so the statements tend to be more about [[CloudCuckoolander the thoughts that goes through her head]] rather than her physical slip-ups.
* LargeHam: Can be rather ''passionate'' about the power of love, especially in VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Tasty ☆ [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj1PSjOOWJ0 Magic]] [[spoiler:as Pure Flonne in D2]].
* LeotardOfPower: Her outfit as a FallenAngel.
* LethalChef:
** In ''Disgaea D2'', in one of the Overlord's Castle conversations, upon hearing that Flonne is cooking, Laharl hopes that she's able to come up with something edible. Sicily also notes that Flonne has difficulty cooking and offers her help. This may be part of the reason why their diet consisted of potato chips, instant ramen, and canned tuna in ''Disgaea 2''.
** Played up much more in the Disgaea anime and Disgaea 2 manga. In the anime, upon sampling her cooking, Laharl's face turns blue and thinks Flonne is trying to kill him. In the Disgaea 2 manga, when Flonne makes Laharl prawns, he looks at it with disgust and tries to escape when she attempts to feed him.
* LightIsGood: Angel in a white outfit and a very NiceGirl.
* LoveBubbles: Such bubbles surround Flonne and Laharl in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' after Laharl congratulates Flonne for passing an angel promotion test, which she is ''extremely'' touched by.
* LoveGoddess: Calls herself a love angel.
* LoveFreak: [[TropeNamer The original!]] We'd say 'accept no substitutes', but Flonne would want you to be accepting of others.
* LoveTriangle: In the ''Disgaea 2'' Drama [=CD=], Flonne also declares that it has become a LoveTriangle between Laharl, Etna, and Adell and the reason Etna does not want to come home with Laharl is that Etna and Adell are a couple. Etna runs along with it.
%%* MagicStaff:
* MagicalGirlWarrior: Flonne imagines herself to be this, calling herself Guardian Flonne and Justice Flonne.
** And in ''D2'', [[spoiler:she becomes Pure Flonne, the Awakened Angel!]]
* MagikarpPower: Give her a staff and load her up with healing and elemental spells through the Mentor system, and she becomes perhaps more powerful and useful than Laharl. [[spoiler:But don't rely on her too much on the first playthrough, given that she gets removed from your party for the last story boss.]]
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Love Angel Flonne has descended from the heavens to teach you (Laharl) the importance of love!
* MessianicArchetype: Lamington seems to think that Flonne is this, and she does indeed pass a lot of the qualifications, but whether or not she will live up to these expectations remains to be seen.
* MoralityPet: Acts as one to Etna, and later Laharl.
* MultiSlotCharacter: In ''4'' her FallenAngel and Archangel forma are two distinct characters with their own abilities and stats.
* NaiveNewcomer: In the beginning when she joins the team.
* NiceGirl: Loving, caring and helpful.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In ''A Brighter Darkness,'' [[spoiler:if the player loses to Barbara in Episode 9, Flonne's temporary Archangel powers go haywire, allowing her to defeat Barbara with ease...at the cost of not knowing how to stop said powers and greatly accelerating the spreading of the Yuie flowers. Oops]].
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The Nice to Laharl's In-Between and Etna's Mean. Because of her belief that demons are capable of love, she consistently tries to get the other two to be more open to kindness, with minimal success. However, Flonne is shown to be just as angry and violent as anyone else if provoked enough.
* NiceToTheWaiter: According to ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', she is especially nice to the [[ButtMonkey Prinnies]], who in turn have formed an unofficial fan club.
* NoSenseOfDirection: She got lost on her way home to Celestia once.
* NotAlwaysEvil: Flonne finds out that demons are not as bad as the other angels would have her believe, though she had her doubts to begin with.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Just as Flonne's interactions with Laharl and Etna help bring out their HiddenDepths, their interactions with her shows that she too can be quite snappy and violent, often leading to a futile attempt to cover her flaws. While she's still the nicest of the trio, her time as Fallen Angel has allowed her to become a little more open in regards to her flaws.
* OddFriendship: With the bitchy demoness Etna. Though she chides Etna from time to time, she treasures their friendship.
* OneHeadTaller: Flonne is exactly one head taller than Laharl.
* {{Otaku}}: Flonne is apparently a big fan of {{ninja}}s and {{kaiju}}.
%%* OurAngelsAreDifferent
* ParentalSubstitute: Arguably Lamington. Flonne got parents of her own in [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels the novels]], but this is never mentioned in the game. He talks about her with great pride and fate, and the game shows she had permission to speak to him casually even thought she is a mere angel trainee and he is no less than the [[PhysicalGod Seraph]]. Arguably, she's also one to Sicily, being the closest thing to a mother she's ever had [[spoiler:which only strengthens her connection with Laharl's Mom.]]
* PercussiveMaintenance: Flonne started smacking Mr. DVD-player mightily in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' when it would play her Blu-ray Disc while cheering "Come on, Mr. DVD Player! You can do it!".
* PerpetualSmiler: Never stops smiling ''once'' in ''VideoGame/TrinityUniverse'', even when it's being shown that she is ''clearly'' not happy.
* PimpedOutDress: Her archangel outfit; lots of ribbons, collar, mantelet, sleeves, several layers of petticoats, the inmost has golden heart embroidery, heart earrings and elegant sandals.
* PluckyGirl: When the going gets tough, Flonne might grow skeptical, but she always tackles the challenge head-on anyway.
* ThePollyanna: No matter what happens to her, she never gives up her ideals.
* ThePowerOfLove: Flonne is a big believer in this and even has a healing skill of the same name.
* PrettyFreeloader: Flonne is not often referred to as Laharl's vassal (despite Laharl forcibly conscripting her into the role after her failed assassination attempt), she lives at Overlord's castle free of charge and her needs are taken care of by the Prinnies, which she feels bad about, as mentioned in ''Prinny 2''.
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: Flonne sends Laharl flying across the room in ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'' to prevent him from harming Mr. DVD Player.
* RankUp: From ''Disgaea 3'''s Raspberyl Mode and ''Disgaea 4'' onwards, Flonne is the new Archangel, [[spoiler:replacing Vulcanus]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: 1509 years old.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Flonne telling off Vulcanus in a lengthy KirkSummation, to the applause of Laharl, Etna, and the Defenders of Earth.
* ReluctantWarrior: She hates fighting, and only does so when it's necessary to help Laharl.
* SacredBowAndArrows: Fires FeatherFlechettes for her Holy Arrows attack.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Flonne's ultimate decision. See ToBeLawfulOrGood below.
* SignificantBirthDate: With Flonne's constant attempts at preaching about love, it should come to no surprise she was born on Valentine's Day. Made even more significant in that in the Celestian calendar, their February is called "The Month of Love".
* SitcomArchNemesis: Arguably, Laharl is hers. His hate for love does rub her the wrong way, and their disagreement is a source of comedy.
* ShipTease: Quite a bit in the first game with Laharl. [[spoiler:The fact that Mid Boss claims Laharl and Flonne to be the ''knot that binds the Netherworld and Celestia'' helps.]]
** In ''[[AllThereInTheManual The World of Disgaea]]'' books 1 and 2, the relationship between them is described as ''Loves?'' Tease indeed.
** And the Literature/DisgaeaNovels take it even further.
** In ''Disgaea 2'', Laharl's eyes tear up when Flonne stays behind with the ''Disgaea 2'' crew instead of coming with him. In ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', Laharl is upset that Flonne might be leaving the Netherworld (though he is in denial about it).
** AngelDevilShipping: With Laharl.
** And, of course, there's the first game's ending. Laharl goes into an {{unstoppable rage}} after he believes that Flonne is dead and can potentially kill the one responsible for it. Whether he strikes the final blow or not determines whether you get the "good ending" ([[spoiler:Where he takes Flonne's words to heart and spares Lamington]]) or the "normal ending" ([[spoiler:Where his rage gets the better of him and kills Lamington, leading to Flonne potentially becoming a flower for all eternity. Luckily for her, he sacrifices his life to bring her back]]).
** Also of note is the opening theme of the Anime adaptation "Aishitageru", when translated into English, several things become clear. 1. It's obviously sung from her Point of View. 2. She admits she loves Laharl and sees past his Jerkass Facade. 3. Considers their meeting "a miracle". Who knows whether this will ever carry over into the games though, much less anything else.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Flonne proves, several times throughout the game, to be smarter than what her [[EstablishingCharacterMoment initial introduction]] would have have the other characters [[TheDitz believe]].
** Because she's the game's cleric/mage, her base intelligence stat is higher than both Etna and Laharl.
-->''Hm...S, So you do get it.''
-->--'''A surprised Laharl to Flonne'''
* SpinAttack: Flonne can do this on a jump stick.
* SquishyWizard: She has powerful spells for both healing and offense, but can't take a hit well.
* StupidGood: Her [[LoveFreak nickname]] should clue you in.
* SuperMode: [[LimitBreak Volunteer Sauveur]] transforms her into Pure Flonne.
* SuperSentaiStance: Flonne tries to do this with Laharl and Etna in the picnic episode; they complain about her enthusiasm and after being forced to participate fail horribly, much to Flonne's dismay.
* SweatDrop: When confused.
* {{Tareme Eyes}}: To counter Laharl's {{Tsurime Eyes}}.
* ThinkingOutLoud: Flonne thinks loudly about her moral dilemma of whether or not assassinating someone she know/don't know is alright as she's sneaking into Laharl's room. Laharl lampshades it when he catches her.
-->'''Laharl:''' Who are you, and why are you in my room talking to yourself?
* ThroughHisStomach: In the Disgaea 2 Drama [=CD=], Flonne tries to make Etna help her cook Laharl a meal since he's so hungry and so that he and Etna can finally make amends. Etna refuses, so Flonne turns to [[FeminineWomenCanCook Rozalin]] for help.
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: Flonne decides over the course of the games if she is going to be a dutiful angel and follow the laws of Celestia, or if she is going to fight for the rights and recognition of demons and humans to be considered equals to angels. [[spoiler:She settles on the latter and fights for it even at the cost of her life.]]
* TokenGoodTeammate: She originally joins Laharl's group to understand demons and teach them about love.
* {{Toku}}: Flonne is a huge fan.
* {{Transflormation}}: She gets turned into a flower by Lamington as punishment for her actions, but she [[MultipleEndings canonically]] gets changed back.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type B towards Laharl. She's normally sweet and loving, but when something makes her angry, she gets furious.
* {{Unishment}}: Her transformation into a [[spoiler:FallenAngel]] condemns her to stay in the Netherworld, with all her newly made demon friends.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: Skilled with staves and usually learns healing and support magic.
* WideEyedIdealist: Flonne endlessly espouses ThePowerOfLove and believes that deep downs all demons are capable of good.
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: When shocked.
* WingdingEyes: Her eyes bursts into flames when she is all fired up, and into empty circles when she becomes confused.
* WingedHumanoid: Though not particularly impressive wings.
* WrongGenreSavvy: It's rather obvious that Flonne has been watching way too many Hero/Ninja/Giant-monster shows.
* YouAreWorthHell: [[spoiler:By the end of the first game, Flonne's life is even worth Prinnydom to Laharl.]]

[[folder:'''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!''']]

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d1GordonArt2.png]]
[[caption-width-right:225: ForGreatJustice!.]]
On Earth, he was a courageous and celebrated hero that descends from a long line of equally courageous and celebrated heroes. In the Netherworld, he's Laharl's recently acquired and usually mistreated slave thanks to an ill-placed bet on his victory. Even so, '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!''' is a HotBlooded LargeHam with a complete inability to keep quiet. As such, he will give his all in ''anything'' he does.
----
* BadassNormal: Gameplay-wise, he's really good with an axe and has some powerful skills, but within the story, he tends to be dismissed quite easily. It's implied in the boss fight against him that Laharl actually had to work at beating him harder than expected, however.
* TheBigGuy: He's handy with axes to rack up huge damage.
* BoisterousBruiser: He's always got an upbeat speech ready for whatever situation presents itself, peppered with "Ha-ha-haaa!"'s.
* ButtMonkey: Gordon pretty much exists to be humiliated and made fun of.
* CallingYourAttacks: He punctuates his unique moves with "Gordon Finish!"
* CaptainSpaceDefenderOfEarth: He's the TropeNamer and a blatant parody of ''ComicStrip/FlashGordon''.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Chapter 10 involves him trying to sneak off during a picnic outing back to Earth, completely forgetting the fact his ship was destroyed into pieces after crash-landing in the Netherworld.
* TheDitz: Gordon's stupidity is only rivaled by Flonne's, but it's a close call.
%%* TheGoodCaptain
* HotBlooded: Gordon is endlessly shouting, hammy, and eager to defend the earth.
* IdiotHero: He's worse than ''[[TheDitz Flonne]]'' in this regard.
-->'''Laharl:''' Aren't you happy, Flonne? There's someone even dumber than you.
* JusticeWillPrevail: He even says so in his ultimate move.
* LanternJawOfJustice: Has a prominently square jaw to emphasize his status as a stock pulp hero.
* LargeHam: Loud, boisterous, and dramatic.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "Anthem of Braves".
%%* LordErrorProne
* MadeASlave: By Laharl.
* MightyGlacier: He's bulky enough to hold choke points.
* NoIndoorVoice: Even his relatively normal voice is quite loud and boisterous.
* SmallNameBigEgo: His ego rivals even Laharl's, but his powers do not.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He loves his pizza. Teriyaki Pizza to be specific.
* TwinkleSmile: Has one in his portrait.
* WhatTheHellHero - Episode 12: [[spoiler:When the EDF arrives to conquer the Netherworld, '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!''' stubbornly holds the assumption that they came to rescue the Defenders of Earth despite the overwhelming evidence of them [[UnwittingPawn being used]] and when Jennifer tried to directly warn him, he instead decides to dismiss Jennifer as his Assistant (causing Jennifer's HeroicBSOD) only to completely regret it a [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness few moments]] [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone later]].]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: [[VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite He is afraid of cockroaches]].

[[folder:Jennifer]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/ChiwaSaito (JP), Paula Tiso (EN)
[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d1JenniferArt.png]]
Sidekick of '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!''' Jennifer is busty, blonde, scantily clad and, against the rest of the group's expectations, brilliant. Jennifer is thoroughly skilled in subjects ranging from Robotics to Martial Arts and generally serves as the brains for '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!''' Though technically in the same predicament as he, Jennifer seems to have gotten the much better deal out of it, likely because Laharl vehemently refuses to stand within five feet of her. As such, she seems to enjoy pushing Laharl's buttons and is something of a CoolBigSis for Flonne and Etna. Considering her initial talk of tentacle demons, she seems to have a rather [[CovertPervert dirty mind]].
----
* AnalProbing: Jennifer ask Laharl and co. if the demons (who basically are aliens in the Franchise/{{Disgaea}} universe) anal probed them. [[EvenEvilHasStandards He takes offense]].
* BadassNormal: Like Gordon, she's just a normal human from earth, but she can throw down with extra-dimensional demons.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Laharl calls Jennifer sexy specifically because she got big breasts, subverted trope because he does not think it makes her better at all.
* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: She very quickly adapted to life in the Netherworld after her exaggerated imagination was corrected.
* CoolBigSis: To the rest of the party, as she sees them as children who need a big sister to take care of them. This despite the fact she's literally the youngest among the whole group (though she can tell not even over 1000 years has helped in their maturity any).
* CovertPervert: She's ''very'' flirty with Laharl, is eager to give him TheTalk, and when discussing the things the demons of the Netherworld might do to her (such as the aforementioned AnalProbing), she sounds more curious than frightened.
* DumbBlonde: Subverted. She looks and acts like one, but she's actually [[TheSmartGuy The Smart Girl]] and just happens to be a BunnyEarsLawyer.
* GeniusBruiser: She's not just a physical powerhouse, she's also a scientist.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:The result of '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!''''s WhatTheHellHero moment. She gets better soon after [[HeelFaceTurn Kurtis']] HeroicSacrifice.]]
* HyperCompetentSidekick: The plot makes her out to be stronger than Gordon, amongst all the other things she does better than him.
* MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: She is adopted though.
* MsFanservice: She's ''very'' busty and curvy, and walks around in shorts and a bikini top.
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: By [[ImprobableAge age 10]] she evidently managed to acquire a [=PhD=] in every branch of science.
* PhenotypeStereotype: American? Most likely (in [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels the novels]] they do live in [[{{Eagleland}} America]]). Blond hair and blue eyes? Duh.
* ShipperOnDeck: In the game and anime, Jennifer has shown shades of this regarding Laharl's relationship with Flonne. In ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite'', however, she is a shipper for almost ''every'' demon who passes by her.
** In the [[Literature/DisgaeaNovels novels]] she quite noticeably ships Laharl and Flonne, even though her own daughter is in love with him.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: In the novels, she's married to Gordon.
* SmarterThanYouLook: She "obtained every [=PhD=] by the age of ten," though her appearance wouldn't give you that impression.
%%* TheSmartGuy
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Shorts and a bikini top.
* TheTalk: She likes teaching sex-ed, according to ''VideoGame/{{Prinny|CanIReallyBeTheHero}} 2''.
** She tries to give Laharl TheTalk in the original game, just flustering Laharl worse. Etna isn't amused with it either.
* TheTease: She loves to tease Laharl, how serious she is about it is anyone's guess...
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She hates Sea Cucumbers according to ''VisualNovel/DisgaeaInfinite''. [[CovertPervert Given the above]], take that as you will...

[[caption-width-right:225: BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP]]
A multi-purpose super robot built by Jennifer at [[ImprobableAge the age of 5]]. Ultra-powerful (in gameplay, too) and able to provide whatever service the characters might need at a given time.
----
* BackFromTheDead: Or rather, the permanently offline.
* BrutalHonesty: Literally programmed to state the truth, much to Gordon's chagrin.
* DayOfTheWeekName: For whatever reason, he's called "Thursday".
* DeadpanSnarker: Because it doesn't ''get'' more deadpan than a robot voice.
* DoAnythingRobot: He's a multi-purpose robot, after all.
* {{Expy}}: Of Robby the Robot from ''Film/ForbiddenPlanet''.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Due to lacking a soul, the D1 version of Thursday is the only character in the entire series who is unable to reincarnate. (In D3 this was removed, since it was too crippling of a restriction.)
* ICanStillFight: He refuses to stand by while his friends are fighting, no matter what condition he's in.
* MySensorsIndicateYouWantToTapThat: Provided this lovely quote:
--> '''Multi-Purpose Super Robot Thursday:''' BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP...\
GORDON KEEPS STARING AT JENNIFER'S THIGHS. PERVERT PERVERT PERVERT...
* RobotBuddy: To the human duo of Gordon and Jennifer.
* SelfDestructMechanism: His "Arigato Roboto" move, where he sacrifices himself to wipe out a circle of enemies.
* SiliconSnarker: Thursday, the robotic assistant to '''CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH''' and Jennifer, who built him, proves to be quite snarky on a number of occasions.
-->'''Thursday:''' ''Gordon has been relegated to bitch work. Where's your skirt, pansy?''
* UnskilledButStrong: Thursday cannot transmigrate (meaning he can't reset his level to increase stat bonuses) nor does he have a weapon mastery. However, aside from RES he has 150% aptitude in all fields, letting him get ridiculously higher stat boosts from equip items than other characters.
* VerbalTic: BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP.

[[caption-width-right:350:The one and only "Dark Adonis"]]
The foppish, self-proclaimed "Dark Adonis" who has a penchant for [[GratuitousFrench random French]], Vyers was quickly dubbed "Mid-Boss" by Laharl just before he had his ass handed to him in a humiliating defeat. He appears at the most inopportune times to challenge Laharl and regain some semblance of dignity. Overall, he appears to be a total ditz, though [[ObfuscatingStupidity he may know more than he lets on...]]
----
* AgentPeacock: [[spoiler:Especially in his past life]].
* AntiVillain: He's an antagonist but is a nice guy in reality, he's just opposed to your group. [[spoiler:It says something that Flonne's pendant, that burns the evil-hearted (Pre-CharacterDevelopment) Laharl and Vulcanus, has no effect on Vyers.]]
* BaddieFlattery: He's very personable and friendly, and regularly compliments the party.
* BattleCry: "En Garde! Ha! But of course." "Right there" "Gotche!" "Haaahahahaha!".
* BerserkButton: Vyers does not like his new name.
** He later sees to get used to it.
* BigGood: [[spoiler:Serves as a major manipulator of events in the first game, and later games imply that he's using his vast web of connections to improve things behind the scenes.]]
* ButtMonkey: He gets no respect and is repeatedly made an idiot of.
* CampStraight: Though it seems to just be part of his facade.
* CapeWings: His jacket is his wings.
* TheChewToy: He only appears to be beat up and sent packing in a humiliating fashion.
* CulturedBadass: He is, after all, a gentleman. [[spoiler:As King Krichevskoy, he was even more sophisticated and badass.]]
* TheDandy: Very foppish and silly.
* DistractedByMyOwnSexy: According to the Prinny Times, Vyers likes to stare into his mirror asking who's the most adonic of them all.
* DopplegangerAttack: Seems to be a signature ability of his. His Adonic Fury, his signature skill, summons three other copies of himself to gang up on a single foe while his Super Adonis from ''Disgaea 3'' creates numerous copies that all magichange into swords for him to throw.
* EnemyEatsYourLunch: He steals the party's picnic basket.
* EnigmaticMinion: After being defeated he continues to hound Laharl and his group. What is he up to? The secret is a major story spoiler.
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: "They call ''moi'' the Dark Adonis." [[spoiler:In the True Ending he drops the accent entirely as he finally allows himself to pass on.]]
* EvilEyebrows: Subverted. He's not a pillar of demonic atrocity.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: His name is Mid-Boss, and he's a Mid-Boss. Simple, really.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: [[spoiler:Has re-acquired the HairAntennae after reclaiming his identity as Krichevskoy in ''VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten'']]
* {{Expy}}: Vyers' personality and looks are very similar to that of Crowdia from ''VideoGame/RhapsodyAMusicalAdventure''.
* FeatherMotif: In his cameo in ''VideoGame/PhantomBrave'' and his appearance as DLC in ''Disgaea 3'' Vyers shows in a soft explosion of white feathers. It fits with [[spoiler:his [[AscendedDemon ascension]] in the novels]] even though it never happened officially in the games.
* TheFightingNarcissist: He's completely full of himself and has a high opinion of his own beauty.
* FullFrontalAssault: In Disgaea 3, Vyers has an evility by the name of "Naked" that makes him gain twice as much experience when he is not equipped with any items. Take that as you will.
* GratuitousFrench: In both audio tracks.
* GuileHero: He has some elements of this, [[spoiler:having the back of Lamington in his BatmanGambit]] and all. Even his Disgaea 3 description states that he is extremely influential.
* HandBehindHead: Vyers does this when he is badly injured, along with InstantBandages.
* HeroAntagonist: He's working towards benevolent ends, but reaching them involves acting like Laharl's enemy.
* ILetYouWin: Vyers makes up petty excuses to end fights with Laharl, [[spoiler:allowing him to win and [[StealthMentor get stronger]].]] And if the loss is truly on his side, count on it being due to his bad case of acid reflux or severe constipation. [[spoiler:Given who he [[KingIncognito actually is]], he might not be lying.]]
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: He wants to be seen as a serious threat, but is too bumbling and silly to be taken seriously.
* InsistentTerminology: "The daaaark Adonis!!"
* InstantBandages: His bust after losing.
* InterruptedSuicide: [[spoiler:When he stops Laharl from from trading up his life to revive Flonne in the good ending. Subverted when he tried and failed to stop his wife from trading in her life to save Laharl.]]
* InterspeciesFriendship: With [[spoiler:Lamington]].
* LampshadeHanging: His name is a crack to what a entry-level villain he is instead of the BigBad or FinalBoss.
* LargeHam: '''HAAAHAHAHAHAHA!''
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He's ''gorgeous''.
* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler:He's the reincarnation of King Krichevskoy, Laharl's father.]]
* MeaningfulName: He's a demon who is "vying" for the throne, hence the name "Vyers".
* MidBoss: Subverted (Ironically), he is really a Boss.
* MistakenForPedophile: In the manga.
* MrFanservice: He walks around with his nicely muscled chest on display, is very good-looking, and speaks French.
* {{Narcissist}}: "O flowers! O trees! O grass! Come, celebrate my strength!"
* NiceGuy: So pure that [[spoiler:Flonne's pendant, which burns anyone with evil in their hearts leaves him completely unharmed, while it nearly roasts her master Vulcanus, ironically an angel, when he tried to hold it.]]
* NobleDemon: He's an upstanding and kind person, and is also a demon like most of the cast.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He is ''not'' the foppish moron he seems. Laharl catches on by the end of the game.
%%* PetalPower: His Adonic Blast.
* PhraseCatcher: Nearly everyone that meets him pins him as some sort of mid-boss, regardless of whether or not they've heard the nickname before. [[spoiler:This changes in ''Disgaea 4'', probably because he finally dropped the act and got his power back.]]
* PoliteVillainsRudeHeroes: Vyers tries his very best to invoke this while talking to Laharl and co., but he is unable to keep his cool when they call by his [[BerserkButton new nickname]]. They proceed to exploit this as much as they can.
* PowerLimiter: Before his fight with Laharl in the Heart of Evil, he claims that in addition to training his ass off, he was wearing 100-pound boxers to increase his speed.
* PrettyBoy: He is very effeminate and beautiful. His title as "The Dark Adonis" references this.
* PromotedToPlayable: The player is able to recruit him in ''VideoGame/PhantomBrave'' and the remakes of ''VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories'' after defeating him in his post-game battles. He can also be recruited in ''VideoGame/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice'' via {{DLC}}.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad[=/=]GoldfishPoopGang
* RecurringBoss: Is fought several times throughout the game.
* SelfAppliedNickname: He insists on being called "The Dark Adonis", but everybody think "Mid-Boss" is a more fitting nickname for him.
* SmallNameBigEgo: [[spoiler:Subverted, as the incompetence is a facade. The ''ego'', on the other hand, sticks around even after he drops the act.]]
-->'''Vyers:''' Why am I so awesome?
* SomethingAboutARose: He has a rose pattern on the back of his jacket, and rose petals blow in the wind when he does one of his special attacks.
* StealthMentor: [[spoiler:He does what he does to help spur Laharl's CharacterDevelopment into a NobleDemon.]]
* {{Stripperiffic}}: His "shirt" amounts to a vest with long sleeves.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: [[spoiler:It suits King Krichevskoy the most, but Vyers isn't shabby either.]]
* ThisIsUnforgivable: [[BlatantLies He loves his new name.]] [[SarcasmMode Really]].
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:Vyers is seen ascending with the soul of Laharl's mom in the good ending. This is subverted since [[BackFromTheDead Vyers keeps appearing as a cameo in different NIS games]], while [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse Laharl's Mom is nowhere to be seen or heard from]]. In the novels this happens in a similar way.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: As of ''Disgaea 4'', [[spoiler:he has regained the power he had as Krichevskoy and is going by his former name.]]
* WakeUpCallBoss: Although he's treated as a joke by most of the characters, the first boss fight against him is not a walk in the park, especially if you're under leveled.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: His outfit leaves his chest eternally bare.
* TheWatcher: He could do much more to help you than he does, but leaves things to Laharl.
* WillfullyWeak: [[spoiler:Considering who he really is, he probably could wipe the floor with Laharl if he really tried, but since he wants his son to become stronger and more mature, he opts to hold back]].
* YoungerThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:Physically, he can't be more than two years old. Of course, King Krichevskoy was much older. It’s later revealed that he was not reborn, simply changed his looks.]]
* YourEyesCanDeceiveYou: This is Vyers' ''advice'' to Laharl in the Maderas episode, telling him to open his mind's eye and overcome the optimistic words and presence of sexy demons. However, Flonne, while touched by his over-the-top speech, believes that he may be overestimating Laharl's abilities at this time. So, Vyers tells him to do the next best thing -- [[MundaneSolution plug his ears and close his eyes.]]

[[folder:Krichevskoy's Vassals]]
A group of six vassals that once served under King Krichevskoy. Outside of a potential threat from an Overlord from another world, they do nothing but lounge around the Overlord Castle's and make jokes at Laharl's expense. These vassals include Zommie the Zombie, Ghoss the Ghost, Gargo the Gargoyle, Dratti the Dragon, Manty the Manticore (Dragon Zombie in ''Complete''), and Goleck the Golem.
----
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: They lounge around the castle and love to make fun of Laharl, but those levels and stats are not for show. When a demon claiming to be a powerful Overlord from an Alternate Netherworld shows up, they jump in and make mincemeat out of him.
* CurbStompBattle: While the level 75 Alternate Overlord curb stomps Laharl's party, he ends up on the receiving end of the curb stomp when Krichevskoy's Vassals join for the rematch, all of whom are above ''level 300''.
* LazyBum: All their time is spent lounging around and trolling Laharl. Even when intruders break into the Overlord's Castle (which happens quite often), they never raise a finger to stop them.
-->'''Zommie:''' If you're looking for the assassin, I saw her walk by here. I think she used the Dimensional Gate to escape.
-->'''Laharl:''' ...If you saw all this, why didn't you chase after her?
-->'''Zommie:''' That would require effort on my part.
* LegacyCharacter: All the later the games have a different Zommie in their hub, usually with a title or number next to his name to differentiate him from the original. These Zommies, however, only serve as MrExposition for the various weapon types, replacing Longinus from the first game.
* MrExposition: When they're not joking around, they're talking about in-game features or trivia regarding Krichevskoy's reign, the Netherworld's current state, and it's relation to Celestia and Earth.
* SamusIsAGirl: Dratti, which she reveals in Episode 8. There are no TertiarySexualCharacteristics or mannerisms that would have otherwise pointed this out. ''Afternoon of Darkness'''s additional voice acting gave Dratti a female voice in the scene against the Alternate Overlord, spoiling TheReveal. The reveal, however, is preserved in ''Complete'' by giving her a male voice instead.
* SuddenlyVoiced: Originally, the scene in which they confront the Alternate Overlord was silent. With the release of ''Afternoon of Darkness'' (Which added voice acting to many of the previously silent cut scenes), the six gained voices. Sadly, this is only for the Japanese audio so they're still silent in English.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Manty is missing in ''Disgaea D2'' most likely due to the absence of the Manticore class. ''Complete'' changes Manty's class to a Zombie Dragon as the Manticore class did not make the transition to HD.

[[folder:Hoggmeiser]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/TomomichiNishimura (JP)
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hoggmeiser_9483.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:250:O money, how do I love thee?$ Let me count the ways<3$]]
A wealthy demon lord, he's Laharl's second target for conquest. That, and Laharl needs the riches of his palace to pay the Prinny Squad.
----
* BadassCape: Wears a long red cloak.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Joins your party when defeated. His son [[spoiler:and daughter]] follow his example in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness''.
* DirtyOldMan: In ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness'', when he meets [[spoiler:[[GenderBender Gender-Bent Laharl]]]]. Even once he finds out [[AttractiveBentGender her true gender]], he doesn't mind and keeps asking her to act sexy in front of him. She is naturally creeped out.
* DubNameChange: His Japanese name is "Zenisuki". Interestingly, the anime uses "Zenisuki" instead of "Hoggmeiser" in the dub.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: His son, whose appearance convinces Laharl to spare them.
* FullBoarAction[=/=]PigMan: His design aesthetic.
* MeaningfulName: He's a greedy pig-demon, a hog and a miser. His Japanese name, "Zenisuki", is even more blunt about his greed as it translates to "I love money".
* SpinAttack: His Spinning Slash special.
* UglyGuysHotDaughter: [[spoiler:Heavily implied to be Lanzaronte's father if you talk to her with max affection.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Porkmeister]]
!!!Voiced by: Creator/AsamiImai (JP)
The son of Hoggmeiser who tries to protect him from Laharl when he tries to kill him. Though he plays a very minor role in the first game, he returns in ''Disgaea D2'' all grown up.
----
* AscendedExtra: Porkmeister calling out Laharl as a bully to stop him from hurting his father was his only line and role in the first game. He gets a slightly bigger role in ''Disgaea D2'', being able to be fought and recruited into the party and later shows up in the post game [[spoiler:being kidnapped by Artina.]]
* IAmNotMyFather: Though he loves his father enough to protect him from Laharl's wrath, he hates his father's greedy ways, which is why he goes to Laharl for training in ''Disgaea D2''.
* MissingMom: No mention of his mother is ever really made, though given Hoggmeiser's perving on Girl!Laharl in ''[=D2=]'' it's pretty likely that she left him for being a creep.
* NoNameGiven: He is only referred to as Hoggmeiser's son in the first game. He gets the name Koganesuki, his Japanese name, in the anime, while the ''Afternoon of Darkness''' Etna Mode gives him his current name.
* PigMan: Like his dad, Porkmeister as a pig-like design. In the first game, he's a cute little piglet, but by the time he reappears in ''Disgaea D2'', he looks just like Hoggmeiser with the only difference being his smaller sprite.
* VocalDissonance: Porkmeister has grown into the splitting image of [[PigMan his father]], but he still has the voice of a little boy.

[[caption-width-right:250:Stop talking so tough, Prince. I know all of your weaknesses. [[spoiler:Isn't that right, Etna?]]]]
A demon lord aspiring to the throne, he [[spoiler:stole Etna's memories and is using them to blackmail her into working for him to overthrow Laharl.]]
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: With nowhere left to run after Laharl and Etna make short work of his forces, the guy grovels for Etna's mercy. She made good on her promise to make him piss his pants whenever he hears her name.
* BigBadWannabe: He thinks he's the biggest threat there is. Not even close.
** BigBadEnsemble: But in Etna Mode in the remakes, he ascends to this with Vulcanus. Still the much lesser threat though.
* CampGay: Portrayed as disturbingly effeminate in the anime, having a tendency to sway his hips every time he's on-screen.
* DarkIsEvil: Unlike other demons, this black-clad monster really is evil.
* DemotedToExtra: After he's defeated, his story relevance ends ''abruptly.'' He gets it worse than Hoggmeiser since Hoggmeiser [[TheBusCameBack got to reappear in [=D2=].]] Maderas ''completely disappears from the franchise'' after the first game.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Joins you when defeated.
* DirtyCoward: He relies on trickery and minions to confront Laharl rather than face him directly. It's only when all other options have been exhausted that he stands and fights. And then when he's defeated, he quickly begins grovelling for his life.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Implied in Etna Mode [[spoiler:after he's beaten by Etna and Flonne and is killed by Vulcanus. We don't actually see what Vulcanus did to him, but Maderas' reaction implies it was extremely painful.]]
* GenreBlind: He doesn't suspect that [[spoiler:Etna will hate him so much she'll betray him and pay off the Prinny Squad he hired to watch her to work for her instead]]. A similar event happens in Etna Mode when his Durians turn on him and Etna attacks him the day before the agreed-upon time for their battle. The response each time to his anger is "[[AlwaysChaoticEvil we're demons, you expected any less]]?"
* HighCollarOfDoom: His collar reaches his ears.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: He's of the Nosferatu class.
* PersonaNonGrata: Stealing Krichevskoy's black pretzel got him kicked out of the castle.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: His outfit features both colors prominently.
* SpinAttack: His standard attack.
* StarterVillain: His manipulations of [[spoiler:Etna]] make him the antagonist for the first several chapters.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:In Etna Mode, Vulcanus lets him continue his plans for conquest because it furthers his goals to kill Etna and Flonne.]]
* VampireVords: More subtle than most examples, but the dub's VA is definitely taking cues from Lugosi's Dracula.
* VillainsWantMercy: He begs for forgiveness when defeated. He's normally spared but if certain conditions are met, Etna can deny him mercy and kill him.

A servant of Maderas, appearing only in Etna Mode.
----
* BenevolentBoss: Subverted. She appears to treat her prinnies well, but isn't above selling them to [[BadBoss Etna]] to save her own skin.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Betray her boss and join Etna after being defeated in battle.
* LifeDrain: "Hip Attack" drains HP from the target.
* ShockAndAwe: Can cast "Thunderbolt" and "Flying Sparks".
* SuccubiAndIncubi: She is from the Succubus class.

[[quoteright:248:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Big_Sister_Prinny_2_8762.png]]
A mysterious red Prinny that works in the Overlord's castle, usually seen tending to the other prinnies. Her acts as a human before she become a prinny turns out to have huge ramifications on the plot.
----
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: In ''Disgaea D2'', [[spoiler:Lamington reveals that she actually had the potential to become an angel instead of becoming a Prinny. She gave that chance to Sicily instead, thus why she is a Prinny while Sicily is a Demon Angel.]]
* TheAtoner: ''All'' Prinnies are, but Big Sis really feels bad about what happened.
* ButNowIMustGo: At the end of episode 8, her soul along with the souls of the rest of the Prinnies are taken by Death to be cleansed by the Red Moon. Flonne questions why she must do so, [[spoiler:especially since she all but outright stated that she was Laharl's Mom all along. She argues that it's best for both her and Laharl to part ways so that the two of them can move on without regrets.]]
* CoolBigSis: Her status among Laharl and Etna's Prinnies.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Had brown hair and eyes when she was alive.
* CuteWitch: Was one in life.
* DivineDate: Her marriage to [[spoiler:King Krichevskoy.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: She performed one, which is why she's a prinny; [[SuicideIsShameful taking her own life is a most grievous sin]]. [[spoiler:''D2'' retcons this. She could have become an angel because it truly was a "heroic" sacrifice, but she chose to become a prinny so her unborn child Sicily can become an angel instead, fulfilling the trope anew.]]
* LoveFreak: According to Etna, [[spoiler:she was lecturing Laharl about love before Flonne appeared on the scene.]]
* NoNameGiven: Her name is never given in any of the games, though the tie-in novels reveal her name to be [[spoiler:[[Myth/ArthurianLegend Gwen]]]].
* PassingTheTorch: She remained a Prinny in order to [[spoiler:watch over Laharl]]. Now that [[spoiler:he has Flonne to guide him]], she can pass on properly without regrets.
* ThePowerOfLove: She was only able to [[spoiler:save Laharl's life]] because she loved him.
* SadisticChoice: ''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2'' reveals that [[spoiler:when Laharl was sick with his deadly illness, she was also pregnant with Sicily at the time, meaning that she had to choose between letting Laharl die and saving Sicily, or killing herself to save Laharl, which would also kill Sicily.]] Luckily, she managed to take a [[TakeAThirdOption bittersweet third option.]]
* TakeMeInstead: Twice, she gives up her life to save someone else that ought to die in her place.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: She is pink and got eyelashes; she is most definitely a girl.
* VerbalTic: Averted. Unlike most Prinnies, she ''doesn't'' have one. When Flonne points this out, she quickly tries to force a "dood" into her sentences.
* WizardsLiveLonger: We never get her exact age, [[spoiler:but there is a 376 year difference between the ages of her children]]. That said, ''Infinite'' states that time flows differently in the Netherworld, implying years are just much shorter there or it's an "Day inside hour outside" type deal" and humans that go there live to the age the would if they were outside.

[[folder:Sardia]]
->"My sword hath slayeth over 2000 demons...or, was it under 2000?"

A (supposedly) legendary demonslayer who appears in Chapter 6 to kill Laharl and any other aspiring demons who show up to take the title of Overlord.
----
* AscendedExtra: She only appears in a single stage in Episode 6 and is nothing more than a PaletteSwap of the Knight class. In the anime, she gets an episode all to herself where she tries to trap Laharl to collect the bounty on him. She is also given a slightly different outfit and a ponytail.
* BadassBoast: She proclaims she killed over 2,000 demons and the earth rips asunder when she swings her sword. She then undermines them by admitting she may be mistaken about her skills.
* FakeUltimateHero: She's nowhere near as powerful or mighty as she boasts.
* MagicKnight: As a Knight class, she has magic skills in tandem with powerful sword attacks.
* OneManArmy: You fight her by herself; she doesn't need anyone else, even 10-on-1 she's going to mess you up. She also might have killed 2,000 demons, it's hard to judge.
* RunningGag: She makes proclamations about how badass she is, only to start doubting the validity of her boasts. Her episode in the anime runs with the gag so much that Etna and Flonne end the gag for her a couple of times.
* YeOldeButcheredEnglish: See her page quote again. Very likely intentionally butchered considering the series.

!!!Voiced by: Creator/TomomichiNishimura (JP, Hour of Darkness), Creator/ChihiroSuzuki (JP, Anime and Disgaea 4), Creator/GrantGeorge (EN)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krichevskoy.png]]
The former Overlord of the Netherworld, two years prior to the game he died, and its the resulting power vacuum that forms the major conflicts in the first half of the game. [[spoiler:It's heavily implied, and outright stated in creation materials, that he has been reborn as Vyers.]]
----
* AFatherToHisMen: His most loyal vassals have quite fond memories of him, and many mourn him. For Etna, he practically was her father and the only family she knew for a long time.
* AngelicBeauty: [[spoiler:In the light novel ''Disgaea: Returned'', Krichevskoy makes his return as an angel. While he's much more conservatively dressed than his time as Mid Boss, he's no less pretty.]]
* AnIcePerson: He celebrated Laharl's birth by freezing the ocean! Also, his first skill in ''Disgaea 4'', Freezing Knuckle, is literally Laharl's Blazing Knuckle with ice instead of fire.
* AscendedDemon: [[spoiler:When he returns in the ''Disgaea: Returned'' light novel, he is no longer a demon but an angel.]]
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:His friendship with Seraph Lamington allowed him to do so.]]
* BadassCape: King Krichevskoy had a nice red cape.
* BenevolentBoss: Easily the one of the kindest demons to work for. Three years may have passed since his rule but most of his vassals still wish he was their Overlord.
* BerserkButton: As kind and patient as he is, there are a few things that can set him off. One of them is trying to steal his black pretzels, which got Maderas kicked out of the castle.
* BerserkerTears: When his wife killed herself, he split the earth in half in grief.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Krichevskoy was able to stop Baal from conquering his netherworld, but received fatal wounds in the process.]]
* BumblingDad: King Krichevskoy was a respectable and great man overall according to those that knew him, but [[spoiler:when he is acting as the Dark Adonis he evidently turn himself into this.]] In the manga, Laharl's flashbacks of Krichevskoy portray him as a kooky father who often annoys Laharl with his attempts to bond with him.
* CapeWings: According to artbooks.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: His vassals note that when he gets overly emotional, he doesn't bother to control his power, leading to various natural disasters throughout the Netherworld such as the toppling of mountains, the freezing of oceans, and the earth splitting apart. Though, as Flonne puts it, they're technically not natural.
-->'''Flonne:''' ...Wouldn't you consider those to be ''artificial'' disasters...?
* DoppelgangerAttack: In ''Disgaea 4'', Krichevskoy creates doppelgangers to fight with him at the end of the Netherworld Battle Tournament and his Majestic Shot brings together his doppelgangers to pound the unfortunate victim into submission. [[spoiler:This seems to be an ability that has been carried over from his time as Vyers (or perhaps an ability he's had all along) with Majestic Shot being a re-skinned Adonic Fury.]]
* DotingParent: We never see Laharl spend much time with Krichevskoy, but according to Etna he thought of Laharl's best until the very end, even though Laharl outright claimed he hated his old man. He also held great faith in Laharl, going so far as to [[spoiler:put Etna and Flonne in charge of looking out for him to ensure that he succeeds, even after his death.]]
* TheGoodKing: King Krichevskoy was kind, honourable and well-intentioned. He also seems to have an aura of melancholy surrounding him in Laharl and Etna's flashback.
* HairAntennae[=/=]OjouRinglets: King Krichevskoy's antennas were shaped like ringlets at the tip. He regains longer ones in Disgaea 4.
* InterspeciesRomance: [[spoiler:His wife was a human witch who came to the Netherworld to study.]]
* LastRequest: As Krichevskoy was dying, he [[spoiler:asked Etna to raise his son to become the next overlord, a request that's difficult for her to stomach, but ultimately achieves]].
* LoveAtFirstSight: With Laharl's mother, according to Etna.
* ManOfSteelWomanOfKleenex: King Krichevskoy had the power to knock down mountains, froze oceans and split the ground in two, while his wife was [[spoiler:a [[SquishyWizard human witch trainee]].]]
* MayflyDecemberRomance: We never get to know how old King Krichevskoy is, but he is a long time friend of [[spoiler:Seraph Lamington]] who is 9147 years old, and Krichevskoy does not look younger than him. He got married to a [[spoiler:human girl]] who looked no older than 20, though D2 shows this may not have actually been the case as [[spoiler:Laharl's full-blood-related sister is over 300 years younger then he is and was born when his mother died, making the 20-year-old-looking human at least 300 years old]].
* MysteriousParent: He's got some 'interesting' parenting methods.
* OminousWalk: Krichevskoy's Blazing Rush starts with him slowly marching towards his frightened opponents before delivering a world of hurt on them. For added awesomeness, flames erupt from under his feet with each step.
%%* PhysicalGod
* PromotedToPlayable: While [[spoiler:his identity as Mid Boss]] has been made playable, Krichevskoy himself has never been playable in any game prior to ''VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten'' (he wasn't even given a sprite). Once he reclaimed his indentity as Krichevskoy, with all the dignity and power that entails, he was made playable for the first time ever after defeating him in ''Disgaea 4's'' Netherbattle Tournament.
* PurposelyOverpowered: With the first game talking about how he was such a powerful Overlord, if he was to ever be playable, he'd have to be strong enough to uphold his legend. So Creator/NipponIchi did just that when he made his DLC appearance in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|APromiseUnforgotten}}'', giving him upgraded versions of Laharl's evilities (Especially his innate evility which increases special attack damage by ''50%'' over Laharl's 20%) and stats and aptitudes on par with the equally overpowered Tyrant Valvatorez.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: This goes for practically every noble character in the series, but King Krichevskoy especially as he did much more when just fight, he created the Dark Assembly and fought for equality between every creature, [[spoiler:he even died protecting his world from Baal by sealing him]].
* SatanIsGood: Satan is never mentioned in the Disgaea series, but the closest physical equivalent are the Overlords, and Overlord Krichevskoy was not only good but also a longtime friends with [[spoiler:the physical [[OmniscientMoralityLicense God]] equivalent Seraph Lamington. Amusingly, Lamington and possibly Krichevskoy both answer to God.]]
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Admits to pulling strings with friends in high places to [[spoiler:cheat death]].
* SecondLove: In the novels, his wife was previously married before falling into the Netherworld.
* SharpDressedMan: Not in the usual since, but King Krichevskoy was a rather well, if not strangely, dressed man.
* SomethingAboutARose: According to the ''World of Disgaea'' artbook, he had a rose ring and a staff tipped with a rose.
* TalkingWeapon: Krichevskoy's weapon, Longinus the talking spear.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: His black pretzels. Maderas stealing them gets the guy thrown out of his castle and choking on them lead to his death. [[spoiler:That last part is a lie, though.]]
* UndignifiedDeath: He ''choked to death'' on a black pretzel. [[spoiler:At least, that's what he wanted people to believe. The truth was that he sealed away [[EldritchAbomination Baal]] but suffered fatal wounds in the process.]]
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Extremely beloved by his vassals. (At least the ones who were loyal to him, anyway.)
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about Krichevskoy without the truth about his death and [[spoiler:him being Mid Boss]]. His much younger looking form in ''Disgaea 4'' [[LateArrivalSpoiler especially]] gives away TheReveal.
* WeaponSpecialization: He was a spear user. This changes in ''Disgaea 4'', where he has proficiencies in swords and fists.

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d1KurtisArt.png]]
Described on the main page as "a big ball of tropes, delivered one right after the other." Gets very little time during this game, but plays a bigger role in ''Cursed Memories''. In "Hour of Darkness", he aids General Carter with the EDF's invasion of the Netherworld.
----
* AntiVillain: He does have genuine motives for wanting to become the next Defender of Earth. He's just willing to go to some great lengths to do so.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:Upon his return as a Prinny, he joins the party to stop Vulcanus.]]
* BadassAdorable: As many characters are quick to point out [[spoiler:when he becomes a prinny.]]
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:As a Prinny]], anyway.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Shows up to help the party out in Celestia.]]
* TheCavalry: [[spoiler:Comes to the party's rescue in Celestia.]]
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Inverted; he modified his body with robotic parts, but only after he crossed the DespairEventHorizon.
* CynicismCatalyst: He because the antihero he is today after Gordon failed to save his family.
* DeadpanSnarker: The party's comments on his [[spoiler:prinny form]] quickly turns him into one.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler:Following his defeat and subsequent reincarnation as a Prinny, he's more than willing to help out Laharl.]]
* EleventhHourRanger: Joins the party just three maps before the ''final'' map.
* {{Expy}}: Very clearly based on Jet Link (aka Cyborg 002) from ''Manga/{{Cyborg 009}}''
** He also shares many similarities with his fellow Cyborg 002 {{Expy}}, Soldato-J of ''Anime/GaoGaiGar'': Namely being a [[GreenAndMean green]] {{Cyborg}} with a tragic past who serves as TheRival to a HotBlooded spacefaring hero.
* HeelFaceTurn: Albeit a case of [[spoiler:DeathEqualsRedemption]] mixed in. [[spoiler:He eventually sides with the heroes once he sees reason.]]
* HollywoodCyborg: He became one after surviving an explosion.
* LargeHam: Inclines to this [[spoiler:after his HeelFaceTurn]], though still nowhere near as bad as Gordon.
* MemeticBadass: He has this reputation InUniverse--the Prinnies consider him something akin to Creator/ChuckNorris.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Feels this way towards Gordon since ItsPersonal.
* ParodySue: Laharl and Etna quickly catch on.
* PromotedToPlayable: Joins the party, [[spoiler:though he's now a Prinny. That said, he's still a very powerful character.]]
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: His HeelFaceTurn begins and ends with him sacrificing himself to save Jennifer. [[spoiler:That being said, the powers that be seem to think he still has a ways to go because he returns as a Prinny.]]
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: His perma-scowl and attempts to look menacing [[spoiler:as a Prinny]] do nothing to stop the endless gushing over him.
%%* TheComicallySerious
* TheRival: To '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!'''
* RocketPunch: Thanks to replacing a good portion of his body with cybernetics, Kurtis is capable of shooting his fist out at his foes. [[spoiler:As a Prinny]], he's still capable of using his RocketPunch though he pulls them out of his pouch instead.
* SinisterSchnoz: He starts out as a villain and comes with one really pointy nose.
%%* TakingTheBullet
* WhyCouldntYouSaveThem: His StartOfDarkness. [[spoiler:His family was killed in a terrorist attack, and even though '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth''' caught the ones responsible, the fact that Gordon couldn't prevent the tragedy made Kurtis decide to become a better Defender of Earth than '''Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth''' could. No matter what...]]
* {{Troperiffic}}: Kurtis is basically almost every trope associated with TheRival crammed into one. Laharl and Etna even try to interrupt some of the tropes (particularly him trying to talk about his DarkAndTroubledPast and [[SuicideByCop wanting Gordon to finish him off]]) only to be rebuked by Flonne and Gordon.

[[caption-width-right:250: Capturing the Netherworld... That's our only means of survival.]]

Leader of the Earth Defense Force and Captain Gordon's commander, his goal is to invade the Netherworld and conquer it in the name of Earth.
----
* AbusiveParent: While we never see what his relationship with Jennifer prior to the invasion was like, ordering her to be "modified" is not the mark of a good parent. Vyers even call him out on it, asking him how he can talk about saving mankind when he can't even save his daughter.
%%* AffablyEvil
* BaldOfEvil: He's quite bald and quite evil. When Gordon turns against the EDF, he calls him "Chrome-dome"
* BigOlEyebrows: He has a massive set.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He seems friendly and personable, but is plotting interdimensional invasion.
* TheDragon: To [[spoiler:Vulcanus]].
* GeneralRipper: He has no problem sacrificing possibly ''millions'' of earth soldiers to conquer the Netherworld.
* KnightOfCerebus: For the most part lacks any comedic traits, and the plot starts getting much more serious when he kicks off his invasion.
* OneWingedAngel: Transforms into Astro Carter in the Human World. It's just a green Prism Ranger suit, though.
* ParentalSubstitute: [[spoiler:He raised Jennifer as a foster daughter.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Given one by [[spoiler:Vyers]] on how he ''really'' invaded the Netherworld to satisfy his own ego.
* TheUnfought: Played straight in the main quest. [[spoiler:Then subverted when he returns as the OptionalBoss of the Human World optional realm.]]
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Vulcanus never intended for his invasion to succeed, just to weaken both Earth and the Netherworld.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He claims the reason he wants to take over the Netherworld is for the space and resources, as the Earth is growing overpopulated and he fears the human race cannot survive without expanding to other worlds.
** While still a jerk in the anime, the "Well-Intentioned" part is more noticeable when Jennifer has flashback to Carter delivering a RousingSpeech to the EDF about the urgency of finding ways to ensure the survival of the human race.

Leader of Celestia. Sends Flonne on an assassination mission targeting the overlord knowing that he was already dead. HilarityEnsues.
----
* AngelicBeauty: Unlike [[ObviouslyEvil Vulcanus]], Lamington is a handsome, refreshing-looking man.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:While he did so with good intentions, he was still a ManipulativeBastard and accepts his fate at Laharl's hands for it. Of course, said fate is not necessarily bad.]]
* AuthorityEqualsAssKicking: [[spoiler:He is by FAR the most powerful enemy fought in the story mode of the original game and often regarded as the hardest FinalBoss.]]
* BattleCry: "Thy will be done." "Forgive me, oh Lord.".
* BigGood: As the leader of Celestia and all angels who seeks peace between them and the Netherworld.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: While Laharl invades in the manga, he's busy baking cookies.
* TheChessMaster: [[spoiler:A rare good one. The entire plot is essentially his plan to bring peace between Celestia and the Netherworld. He's even smart enough to use the evil schemes of his treacherous right hand man which he knew about the whole time as part of his plan.]]
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome:
** After absences in multiple games, he finally reappears in [[spoiler:''VideoGame/DisgaeaD2ABrighterDarkness'' to confirm the identity of Laharl's sister, Sicily]].
** [[spoiler:''VideoGame/Disgaea5AllianceOfVengeance'']]'s epilogue suggests, but does not confirm, that [[spoiler:Christo is a younger version of him]].
* EccentricMentor: He acts in the best interests of Flonne and Laharl, but in very roundabout ways and in the meantime can seem a bit spaced-out.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: He hates himself for what he's put the main characters through, so he willingly faces their judgement after he punishes Flonne as part of his plan.
* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:The last challenge in the first game's main campaign.]]
* GoodIsNotDumb: He is a good guy and seems a bit spacey, but he is quite intelligent and calculating. [[spoiler:Sorry to disappoint you, Vulcanus.]]
%%* GuileHero:
* HeroAntagonist: [[spoiler:In the final level, his true nature as a good person is revealed, but turning Flonne into a flower prompts Laharl to unleash his wrath on the Seraph.]]
* HeroOfAnotherStory: If we go by the [[spoiler:Seraph Lamington is [[VideoGame/Disgaea5AllianceOfVengeance Christo]]]] route.
* HiddenDepths: MUCH smarter than he looks, see ChessMaster above.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: [[spoiler:Inverted]] in regard to Vulcanus.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: He's very handsome and has hair down to his legs.
* MartialPacifist: He dislikes fighting and violence. Doesn't mean he isn't good at doing it when he has to.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:Manipulates Flonne, Vulcanus, and eventually Laharl into getting all that he wants.]]
* MeaningfulName: See ThemeNaming below.
* NervesOfSteel: Even if his plans fail or his life is threatened his response will be calm.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Acts like an airhead, the keyword being ''acts''.
* OmniscientMoralityLicense: [[spoiler:Manipulates Flonne and Laharl and allows Vulcanus to do some truly evil things for the sake of creating peace between angels and demons.]]
* OurAngelsAreDifferent [[spoiler:He actually wants angels and demons to peacefully coexist with each other.]]
* PowerFloats: Lamington floats slightly above the ground.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: ''9147'' years old and does not look anything like it.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Although Flonne breaks angelic law by fighting her own people, and accepts her ForcedTransformation punishment, her ''real'' punishment is merely to become a FallenAngel. Lamington also sees right through Vulcanus.
* TheStoic: Polite and never raises his voice, ever.
* TeleportersAndTransporters: He never walks, he just teleports, both in and out of battle.
* ThemeNaming: Double case. Demons are normally named after volcanoes and angels are named after dessert. [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Lamington His name]] [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamington is both]]. [[spoiler:[[MeaningfulName He wants both species to live together in harmony]].]]

[[caption-width-right:300: [[SarcasmMode Totally not a villain.]]]]

The main villain of the game. An angel, albeit an extremely ugly one. Has very little tolerance for Flonne's screw-ups, and insists on correcting them himself.
----
* BattleCry: "Hah." "Heh heh heh heh heh." "I am justice".
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: While Flonne looks like a cute young girl and Lamington looks like an easy-going pretty boy, Vulcanus looks like a shifty middle-aged man. Naturally, he's the only one of the three that is evil.
* BigBad: While not the final boss of the main game, he's very much the main villain of the story.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: At the end of Chapter 4, he sternly tells the audience that he'll still be around even though he's not going to show up for several chapters.
* TheCameo: In the "Raspberyl Mode" in Absense of Justice, you can fight a bunch of angels and with them is a Flora Beast called Vulcanus. One the one hand, he's still forcibly transformed, on the other, he's no longer [[AndIMustScream a mindless, immobile creature]].
* {{Demonization}}: He does this to demons, [[NotAlwaysEvil who are not even nearly as bad as he thinks they are]].
* DevilInPlainSight: Only [[TheDitz Flonne]] fails to pick up that he's evil, everybody else can see it as easily as the viewer. [[spoiler:Lamington included, which Vulcanus finds out the hard way.]]
* EvilChancellor: He is the Archangel, second-in-command to Seraph Lamington and [[ArchangelMichael Supreme Commander of the Celestial Hosts]]. He also got a [[AGodAmI god complex]], is [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain politically incorrect]] and ObviouslyEvil.
* EvilLaugh: Very prone to letting out loud, booming laughter.
* {{Expy}}: EvilChancellor? ObviouslyEvil? Darker skin compared to his brethren? [[GoodHairEvilHair An evil mustache]]? Why is [[VideoGame/RhapsodyAMusicalAdventure Golonzo]] an angel?!
* FantasticRacism: His primary character trait is that he believes demons are nothing more than evil scum and that angels must destroy them at all costs, along with anyone and anything that tries to defend them. In the anime, [[spoiler:he takes a sword to '''Seraph Lamington''' after learning he was trying to make peace with the demons instead. [[FinalBoss This ends about]] [[PhysicalGod as well as it]] [[CurbStompBattle did in the game.]]]]
* FinalBoss: Of Etna Mode.
* TheFundamentalist: Him (and many other angels apparently).
* GodGuise: Vulcanus pretends to be God to influence Flonne to go after Etna in Etna Mode. Initially PlayedForLaughs, till he launches a plan to kill her and Etna at the same time.
* GoodHairEvilHair: The [[BeardOfEvil Mustache Of Evil]]
* HumiliationConga: [[spoiler:He gets turned into a flower (or a frog in the anime, take your pick) by Seraph Lamington in the end.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: In Etna Mode, when he stops playing OrcusOnHisThrone, he's drops any comedic quirks, and any remaining humorous elements in the story are dropped.
* KnightTemplar: He is absolute in his belief that demons are foul scum of evil that must be destroyed.
* LargeHam: '''Every word''' that comes out of this guys mouth is over the top and dripping with delicious cheesiness.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: This is Vulcanus' plan for Laharl and co. and the Seraph after they have defeated him. [[spoiler:It doesn't work.]]
* LightIsNotGood: He's an angel but is also the main antagonist.
* MeaningfulName: Tied in with ThemeNaming, as he doesn't share the cake naming patterns of the angels, but references the volcano names of the demons. Because, well, [[LightIsNotGood he's more like a demon than an angel]].
* ObliviouslyEvil: He's utterly convinced that his path is the only true way to save the world, and everything trying to stop him are irredemably evil.
* ObviouslyEvil: All of the characters comment on how obvious it is that that is the face of a villain, except [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter Flonne]]. Laharl even says he'd make a good vassal if he wasn't an angel.
--> '''Jennifer''': You've got to be kidding! No matter how you look at it, that's the face of a villain!
** And even in Flonne's case, it's less "can't tell at all" and more "can't tell with just a glance". Even she figures it out somewhat quickly once Vulcanus starts talking.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: [[FantasticRacism He thinks all demons are evil, humans are weak and pathetic]] and angels are superior in every way.
* ProphetEyes: Lacks pupils in his eyes compared to most of the characters. The anime adaptation gives him black pupils.
* SayMyName: Almost every single conversation with Lamington begins with "Master Lamington! Master Lamington, are you here!?"
* SmugSnake: He feels he alone is best suited to rule the universe and plots to overthrow his much stronger, more competent boss.
* UnwittingPawn: ''Everyone'' in [[spoiler:Lamington's BatmanGambit]], but Vulcanus is the biggest one.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Oh boy is he ever. He doesn't get that he's a villain, makes assumptions that [[TheDitz Flonne]] of all people is plotting against him, thinks all demons are evil, [[spoiler:and fails to pick up that his boss knows he's evil]].
* YouHaveOutLivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:Twice in Etna Mode. First, after sending Flonne to kill Etna and she repeatably fails, he supposedly gives her the power to kill Etna, but planned for his "help" to kill her as well. Later kills Maderas after he fails to kill Flonne and Etna, and it doesn't fall under YouHaveFailedMe since Maderas was only his UnwittingPawn.]]

[[caption-width-right:147:I'm King Krichevskoy's daughter!]]

An angel from Celestia who claims to be Laharl's younger sister. She appears in his castle proclaiming she's the one entitled to be the Overlord instead of him, though Sicily tags along with him during his quest to crush the Krichevskoy Group.
----
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She doesn't have any friends in Celestia due to [[spoiler:being a rare "Demon Angel" girl who was given angel status by her human mother giving up her own reincarnation as an angel so Sicily - daughter to demon Krichevskoy - could live.]]
* BadassAdorable: She's a cute little girl but just as strong in battle as any other angel or demon.
* BigBrotherWorship: After losing to Laharl in Episode 2. One of her voice clips after performing an attack is "Did you see that, Big Brother?"
* BornOfHeavenAndHell: [[spoiler:Revealed by Virunga to be a "Demon Angel". This is due to Laharl's Mom, who was pregnant with Sicily at the time, refusing the chance to become an angel and gave it to Sicily instead.]]
* CutenessProximity: She loves Prinnies and finds them absolutely adorable.
* TheCutie: Sweet, lovable, and, of course, cute. When she first meeting Laharl, she tries to play it up by using her cuteness and the cookies she baked in order to get him to give up the title of Overlord. Unfortunately for her, all it does is piss him off.
* EvilLaugh: While never heard, the artwork for the Overlord Sicily ending shows her imitating Laharl's laugh, complete with BadassArmfold.
* FriendlessBackground: She had no friends back in Celestia and laments not having been born in the Netherworld with Laharl. [[spoiler:That's because of Sicily's status as a "Demon Angel", [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer which made the other angels distance themselves away from her.]]]]
* HairAntennae: According to the artbook, she does have antennae similar to Laharl's, but she tied the antennae into the bow seen in the picture above.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:She is willing to trade her life for all the angels Xenolith kidnapped, but Laharl tries to prevent her from going through with it. [[NonStandardGameOver If the player is unable to defeat Xenolith in the final battle]], however, she does go through with it, leaving behind her heartbroken brother.]]
* LamarckWasRight: Her first skill, Angelic Knuckle, is very much like Laharl's Blazing Knuckle and Krichevskoy's Freezing Knuckles except she gathers [[HolyHandGrenade angelic energy]] into her fists .
* LongLostSibling: Claims to be this, but everyone is skeptical, especially because Laharl was an only child when his Mom sacrificed herself to save his life and there's no way a demon and a human can give birth to an angel. [[spoiler:Turns out his Mom was pregnant with Sicily when she sacrificed her life and Sicily was given life when their mother passed on the chance to become an angel so that Sicily may live.]]
%%* LittleMissBadass
* MythologyGag:
** A mysterious young girl tries to claim the throne and claims to be Laharl's younger sister? Maharl already did that in the [[Anime/MakaiSenkiDisgaea Disgaea anime]][[note]]Laharl was intended to have a sister in the first game, but was ultimately cut out[[/note]] [[spoiler:Unlike Maharl, who was revealed to be a fake, Sicily really is Laharl's sister.]]
** Episode 2 is itself a repeat of the first game where Laharl chases down an angel who's usurping him through an ice level. It even ends with Sicily summoning dragons and doing the same angelic incantations as Flonne did before.
* NaiveNewcomer: Having spent all her life in Celestia, she's naturally put off by the more negative aspects of demons like their selfishness and their propensity for violence, which is why she's initially more comfortable with Flonne.
* NiceGirl: Sicily is an absolute sweetheart.
* {{Otaku}}: Just like Flonne, but she's more mellow about it. She watches Effort Ninja Gorillian with Flonne and is able to recognize Flonne's MagicalGirlWarrior outfit as that of Pure Pink from the Pure Seven Morphing Angels.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: [[spoiler:Namely the fact she's a demon-angel hybrid.]]
* PutOnABus: She's not a GuestFighter in any form in ''VideoGame/Disgaea6DefianceOfDestiny'' despite her trio being recruitable. She does fortunately get to [[TheBusCameBack return]] as DLC in ''VideoGame/Disgaea7VowOfTheVirtueless''.
* SpellBook: Sicily's most proficient weapon.
* SupremeChef: Not only is she the only one among Laharl, Etna, and Flonne to possess cooking talent, but she is capable of making exact replicas of dishes.

The Krichevskoy Group's candidate to become the next Overlord. Barbara may look very imposing, but she only does anything if she's ordered to do so by her superiors and enemies alike.
----
* BerserkButton: Her whole life is orders and carrying out those orders, so pleading her to do a favor is a good way to piss her off. She also dislikes perverted orders.
-->'''Prinny''': You'll follow any order right, dood? Then can I give you some perverted orders?
-->'''Barbara''': If you want to risk your life, go ahead and try it.
* CatchPhrase: "[[NoYou The one who calls someone else X is the true X!]]"
* CrazyCatLady: Her post-game maps have her serving a horde of Slumber Cats, which you must defeat to re-recruit her. She likes them because, being cats, they think nothing of simply demanding food and attention from her without ever expecting her to think for herself.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Because she has been conditioned to follow orders all her life, she has no thoughts of her own and has trouble thinking for herself. [[spoiler:Laharl eventually makes her his vassal so that she may find that answer, though it's clear later on that he just wants to make good use of her obedience.]] Her obedience is so bad, that it actually causes her internal conflict and despair to even try to think on her own or have opinions. This even leads to her interpreting motions from a cat as demands and orders, and jumps on it without a second thought.
* TheDragon: To the Krichevskoy Group, however [[DragonInChief she's much stronger than them and they rely on her to fight Laharl]].
* HatesBeingAlone: According to the [[AllThereintheManual D2 special edition artwork]] one of the things she hates besides thinking for herself is being alone. It would explain why she would go to the cats for comfort post game.
* LawfulStupid: She follows any order to the letter, even if it's a really bad idea to do so. [[spoiler:When the Krichevskoy Group orders her not to let Laharl past, she continues to carry out that order even when her bosses are being pulled into a dark vortex and Laharl declares he wants to save them.]]
* LiteralMinded: She can be ordered to fight. Be ordered to win said fight? She won't win if she's not ordered to do it! And if her orders are too vague to her, she won't carry it out.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Claims that she wasn't even using half her strength against Laharl the first time because she wasn't ordered to defeat him. Her being at a [[SlidingScaleOfGameplayAndStoryIntegration higher level]] in the second fight helps justify her claims.
* JustFollowingOrders: This is taken to the extremes with her. It does, however, allow her to be the ''only character'' to ever carry out one of [[VideoGame/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice Salvatore's]] crazy orders in the DLC.
* MightyGlacier: She's basically an [[StoneWall Armor Knight]] that excels at dishing out and taking damage. This stems from her evility: Barbara is encouraged to use the defend command because it provides a massive boost to both her attack and defense power, and it guarantees her to counter any attack.
%%* ThongOfShielding: Much like the rest of the Heavy Knights in the game.
* TooDumbToLive: One of the bad endings shows that even when her life is in danger, she won't act unless ordered to do so.

A faction made up of previous vassals devoted to upholding the late King Krichevskoy's legacy, seeing Laharl as unworthy of the throne. The three leaders are Grosso the Gargoyle, Rainier the Sea Angel, and Garungun the Golem.
----
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:They along with Virunga help clear the way for the Disgaea trio so they can go after Xenolith.]]
* BuxomBeautyStandard Rainier, who used to babysit Laharl when he was a baby. Her good looks would have killed him.
* TheChessmaster: They openly admit that they're using Barbara's skills so she becomes the Overlord who will take their orders without talking back. She doesn't complain about it.
* CloudCuckooLander: Garungun, who assumes there's a Majin sealed in his left arm and that only people with evil eyes can see his wings.
* DeadpanSnarker: Rainier. Not a second goes by without her snarking.
* EliteMook: All three of them belong into generic monster classes, but have traits that stand out from the generic monsters. Grosso is a golden Gargoyle with a hat and glasses, Garungun is a red Golem with a scar, chains and wrapped-up left arm, and Rainier is the only known grown-up Sea Angel.
* FantasticRacism: Though it's hard not to see the transforming Netherworld as something related to Celestia, they never liked the improving relations between Celestia and the Netherworld and call out Laharl for having an angel in his party. In fact, angels are listed in the artbook as one of Grosso's dislikes.
* ForgettableCharacter: Neither Laharl or Etna seem to remember these three when they were working for the king. It's justified, as Etna mentions the king had a lot of vassals to keep track of and Laharl was an infant (in demon years) to remember any of them.
* HarmlessVillain: Laharl always take them for more an annoyance than anything else.
** NotSoHarmlessVillain: Come Chapter 8, he ''really'' should have at least put them on a leash, considering they [[spoiler:almost destroyed the Netherworld by accident, and would have done so if you couldn't beat Barbara]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Rainier. She thinks very little of everyone around her and is not afraid to let them know, the late Krichevskoy being the only exception.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Even though they claim they are following Krichevskoy's will, they do not seem to have a grasp on what made Krichevskoy a great and charismatic Overlord. At one point, they suggest using Sicily as a hostage to put the angels at a disadvantage which Laharl disagrees with and, considering the tropes associated with Krichevskoy, so would he.
* LargeHam: Garungun, [[Creator/JamiesonPrice voiced]] by none other than [[VideoGame/MakaiKingdom King Drake the 3rd]]!
* MarshmallowHell: Rainier, when she used to take care of Laharl as a baby, often got him to sleep by "smothering him". [[FreudianExcuse Explains a lot, don't it?]]
* MilesGloriosus: Garungun, a [[LargeHam hammy]] golem with the title ''[[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Obsidian Winged Destroyer]]'' and can summon a Majin out of his left hand. He also has [[NonIndicativeName no wings at all]] (which he ''claims'' is visible only to those with an ''evil eye''), is unable to deliver on the Majin thing, and goes down just as easily as the rest of the Krichevskoy Group.
** MrImagination: His overly bombastic title, claims of power he can't follow up on, and insistence that only special people can see his wings hints that he might just be a {{Chuunibyou}} who never grew out of it.
* PuppetKing: The Group's plans ultimately rely on placing a figurehead they control on the throne since neither of them can take on Laharl directly. At first they use Barbara, then a [[spoiler:Prinny]], and finally, in the postgame [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject Darkdeath Evilman]]]].

Celestia's newest Archangel. Unlike the former Archangel Vulcanus, Virunga is soft-spoken, very loyal to Lamington, and cares a great deal about his fellow angels.
----
* AFatherToHisMen: He cares a great deal about his fellow angels and won't hesitate to go into the Netherworld himself [[spoiler:or aid the Overlord during a Netherworld crisis]] if it secures their safe return.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:He and the Krichevskoy Group help clear the way so that the Disgaea trio can get to Xenolith.]]
* {{Foil}}: Virunga is clearly one to Vulcanus. They both have prejudiced views on angels and demons but that is where the similarities stop. Virunga is a PrettyBoy and, while misguided, is loyal to Seraph Lamington and cares for his fellow angels. Vulcanus is ObviouslyEvil, isn't loyal to the Seraph at all, and is willing to sacrifice everyone for his ambitions.
* NobleBigot: Virunga is a noble and loyal Archangel, constantly looking out for the well-being of his fellow angels as well as believing in the PowerOfLove, practically a saint compared to Vulcanus. Unfortunately, he too has some prejudiced views, particularly regarding Sicily's nature [[spoiler:as a Demon-Angel]] and where she should stay. [[spoiler:He ignores her feelings of loneliness in Celestia and believes that she's better off staying with the angels. This briefly puts him at odds with Laharl and Flonne, who believe Sicily should be allowed to choose to stay in the Netherworld. He only backs down after Lamington interjects]].
* PowerOfLove: Claims (sincerely) to believe in it, but his flawed views prevent him from truly grasping it. Laharl even says that Flonne, a Fallen Angel, understands the PowerOfLove far better than the Archangel. [[ForegoneConclusion Flonne eventually becomes]] [[VideoGame/Disgaea4APromiseUnforgotten the next Archangel]].
* PrettyBoy: A far cry from the more evil looking Vulcanus. Etna comments that he's as much good looking as Vulcanus is not.
* UndyingLoyalty: No doubt the biggest difference between him and Vulcanus is that he is completely loyal to Lamington.

[[folder:Lanzarote]]
A Netherworld Idol that appears in Chapter 4. She quickly sweeps the Netherworld with her singing voice, which collides her with Laharl due to her being more popular than him. Her Producer is none other than Hoggmeiser.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:She has no care whatsoever of her fans who greatly adore her.]]
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler:Lanzarote joins Laharls's party after beating her in battle.]]
* DemotedToExtra: After joining the party, Lanzarote is never mentioned in-story again.
* IdolSinger: She's a Netherworld-famous pop star.
* PaletteSwap: She is a recolor of the archer class.
* SayItWithHearts: Her dialogue often is punctuated with hearts.
* TakeOverTheWorld: [[spoiler:Lanzarote plans on becoming an Overlord by using her fame as a famous idol.]]

A mysterious and powerful demon who is often seen with angels for unknown reasons. He is revealed as Etna's brother, who was attacked by demons in her infancy for being suspected of plotting to overthrow King Krichevskoy, and in the chaos he lost track of Etna, who was taken in by Krichevskoy as an orphan.
----
* AffablyEvil: One of the nicest demons in the series, hands down. He's polite, soft spoken, helped save the Netherworld from the Krichevskoy Group's accidental black hole, and went out of his way to save his sister's life. Though, draining the netherworld's magic and kidnapping and draining a bunch of angels to stabilise said netherworld aren't exactly good things.
* AloofBigBrother: To Etna, even if she doesn't acknowledge it.
* AntiVillain: The only reason he was kidnapping angels was to stop the collapse of the Netherworld, which was happening because of the Artifact of Absolute Death, which he only has to keep Etna from suffering a PhlebotinumOverload.
* ArtifactOfDoom: He has the Artifact of Absolute Death, an artifact that absorbs all kinds of magic, embedded in his chest.
* TheAtoner: Implied to be the reason why he allowed himself to be dragged down to the Netherworld. He couldn't forgive himself for hurting his sister or the crimes he had committed to protect her. Alas Etna tells Laharl to pardon him so its safe to assume that while he's off the hook he's still going to atone by working under his little sister.
* BadassBoast: "If you still want to fight me, I'll show you my full power. You will see absolute despair, and you'll never think of fighting me again!"
* BadassLongcoat: Sports a black one with a HighCollarOfDoom.
* BerserkButton: A very subtle one but the [[AllThereintheManual D2 special edition artwork]] states that Xenolith hates being interrogated. It is subtle because during the final chapter when it is revealed that Xenolith was the one kidnapping the angels and causing the Netherworld to turn into Celestia because of it, Laharl's group ends up demanding that Xenolith tell the truth on why he would use those powers. At first Xenolith was fine with Laharl's conclusion of he was using his powers to become the Overlord but once Flonne saw right through it and during the final battle where the group continued to tell him to remove the artifact, his tone of voice became deeper like he was irritated with all the questions. However he never blew up once his button was pressed. He only confessed that he did it to protect Etna.
* BewareTheHonestOnes: Xenolith is one of the most honest demons in the franchise, not lying to Laharl's group even once. Keeping information like the kidnapping of the angels only occurs when they don't ask him specifically and has to be forced out of him. However whenever he speaks, no lies comes out but usually half truths such as keeping the artifact on him to save Etna but never denying the idea of Laharl's insistence that he's using it to become the Overlord.
* BigBad: All the major events of the game can be traced back to him absorbing the Netherworld's magic and kidnapping the angels.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Red hair and red eyes in tandem.
* EnergyAbsorption: Through the Artifact of Absolute Death, it absorbs the magic from anything, and even has capacity to dry the entire netherworld. Also works as his evility for the last fight with him, Artifact Run Wild, where he drains 3% of the base stats from whomever steps within his 10 panel range, gaining more stats the closer the character is to him -- at adjacent range to him, that's 30% of the character's stats. It means unlike the previous end bosses in the series, he requires strategy to beat and can't stopped through a single overleved character or a ZergRush.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Turns out the ArtifactOfDoom he's using has another drawback, trying to destroy it leads to it taking over his mind.
* FinalBoss: He's the final major opponent of the main storyline in ''Disgaea Dimension 2''.
* {{Foil}}: To Laharl. They're both terrifically powerful demons, they both have a reference for swords, and they're both deeply devoted to their little sisters, to the point they'd sacrifice their own life to save them. Where Laharl is loud and obnoxious and looks like a little kid, Xenolith is quiet and dignified and looks like a young adult.
* GaiasVengeance: The Netherworld, angry at Xenolith for his crimes, drags him into the earth. If TheStinger is to be believed, though, he manages to return.
* ILetYouWin: Judging from the dialogue, Xenolith is more powerful than Laharl even when he's not at full strength. When you beat him, Laharl even comments that Xenolith took it easy on them and Flonne states it's because he didn't want to hurt Etna. Only in the bad ending where Sicily sacrifices herself to stop Xenolith does he go all out. Otherwise in the normal ending and the bad ending resulting in Etna's death, he indeed is taking it easy on the party.
* IneffectualLoner: He goes it alone and refuses outside help most of the time. It causes chaos for the netherworld and Celestia because he won't ask for help or even tell people what's going on.
* KnightOfCerebus: None of the scenes with him are played humorously and the plot takes the inevitable serious turn when he shows up.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: Would risk his life and the destruction and transformation of the Netherworld for the sake of Etna, even if Etna refuses to acknowledge him as her brother.
* LongLostSibling: He is Etna's older brother who decided to leave her with Krichevskoy when she was young in order to keep her safe.
* NobleDemon: From his introduction Xenolith is established as being noble amongst demons helping an angel out from a group of angry demons. This is already seen as odd given he seems to have no reason to help except for the fact he was just passing by (though he helped the angel only to kidnap her after the battle without Laharl's group knowing). The next chapter he sends a letter to Etna asking her to meet him alone in the place where she was found by the king. Etna of course is suspicious and thinks its a trap especially at the part about coming alone. Of course when she finally meets him and demands what he wants and what is the catch, to her surprise, there is none.
* OneWingedAngel: In the final battle when the Artifact of Absolute Death takes over, he gains BlackEyesOfCrazy, [[PowerGivesYouWings energy wings]], and a SlasherSmile.
* PerpetualFrowner: The only time he's shown smiling is when the Artifact of Absolute Death takes control of his body, and said smile is a SlasherSmile.
* TheQuietOne: Doesn't speak when spoken to and only talks when necessary.
* SiblingYinYang: To Etna. While she has a [[BadBoss cruel]] [[HeroicComedicSociopath streak]] and [[FieryRedhead feisty]], Xenolith is very [[TheStoic calm]] individual and is a {{Noble Demon}}.
* TheStoic: Very soft spoken and shows little emotion.
** NotSoStoic: Except when the Artifact of Absolute Death takes over his body and when he watches Etna's power kill her in one of the bad endings. Then all he can do is scream.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: One of the taller characters in the series, wears all black, and pretty good looking.
%%* TooManyBelts
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: The [[AllThereintheManual D2 special edition artwork]] specifically states that he loves the Netherworld fruit.
* TheUnreveal: Though the player never sees who Etna is talking to in TheStinger, her words indicate that it is Xenolith.
* VillainousRescue: Stops the Kirchevskoy Group's blundering from accidentally destroying the Netherworld. Granted it was partially his fault in the first place.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Unusual in that he's also the FinalBoss, but nonetheless, the second fight with Xenolith serves as a hard warning of the difficulty of the varying {{Superboss}}es of the post-game, and forces the player to use strategy rather than excessive LevelGrinding.
* WalkingSpoiler: To the point where even his ''character design'', which is similar to Etna's, can give away a major plot point.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He used the Artifact of Absolute Death to absorb Etna's immense power so it wouldn't kill her. However, he couldn't turn it off and ended up draining the Netherworld of it's magic, causing it to collapse. To prevent that, he kidnapped the angels so that their power can stabilize the Netherworld, but it caused the Netherworld environment to morph into something similar to Celestia, causing rising tensions between the demons and angels.
