TheHero of ''Deadman Wonderland'', Ganta is MistakenForMurderer and imprisoned in Deadman Wonderland after his entire school class is massacred by the "Red Man". Implanted with the Red Man's Branches of Sin, Ganta earns the nickname '''Woodpecker''', becoming a Deadman. Wishing to gain freedom, Ganta meets the cheery Shiro, a long lost childhood friend, and tries to survive in the prison against the other inmates, Deadmen and the Red Man.
----
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: In the manga, while not exactly a StockShonenHero, Ganta is a perceptive strategist, evidenced during the Dog Race and his first two battles in Carnival Corpse. After the first fight with Genkaku, as well as his second match with Senji, Manga!Ganta learns how to process the events afterward in stride, whereas Anime!Ganta tends to be in a constant state of brooding and depression.
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange: In the final battle of the anime, while never outright stated ([[AllThereInTheManual not even by the anime staff themselves]]), it's heavily implied that his [[spoiler: [[EleventhHourSuperpower upgraded Branch of Sin]] is borrowed from the Wretched Egg, due to the fact that they have the same markings in that moment. Contrast this to the manga where, come the final arc, where the red diamond is literally '''eating away at his internal organs''' due to overuse of the Ganbare Gun, and put him in a [[HeroicRROD 3-Day Coma]], it's almost preferable.]]
* AdaptationalWimp: In the manga, whilst not ''strong'' in the beginning of the manga, he was a pretty clear Determinator, who wouldn't back down from a fight. The only exception to this rule is his first fight with Senji, where he quickly realizes he's out of his element. In the anime, however, his behavior in the first few chapters is ramped up to the point of Flanderization, where he is gets beat up and shoved around in every single episode. This is most prevalent in Episode 2, where he is willing to quit the Dog Race despite the fact that he would die the next day if he did, a pretty major plot point of the episode. [[spoiler: It gets worse by the final episode. (See [[AdaptationalSuperpowerChange above]]).]]
* AnimalMotifs: Like most Deadmen, he is associated with a bird, the Woodpecker. See DestructiveSavior.
* TheAtoner:
** TheReveal [[spoiler:about Shiro and Ganta's mother has left Ganta blaming himself for Wretched Egg existing. He is now determined to make things right.]]
** Also subverted. [[spoiler: He struggles with his feelings of love and his hatred for the monster that she is, and in their fight he is alternating between a heartfelt plea and trying satisfy his rage by ripping her to shreds.]]
* AwesomeButImpractical: His Ganta Gun turns his blood into bullets. The thing is, while all the other Deadmen's fighting styles let them recycle blood easily, Ganta's does not. Meaning he shoots out his own blood to fight, without getting it back. Though this has obvious consequences early in the series, see DifficultButAwesome for its true potential. It helps that, once Crow teaches him how to make his shots break the sound barrier, he's able to hit faster, harder, and with less blood expended on top of bypassing the prison's [[AntiMagic Worm Eater devices]]. [[spoiler: Leaving that aside, though, the crystal in his chest that is the source of his powers is slowly killing him.]]
* BatmanGambit: He frequently tries to distract his foes while getting ready to attack them. When working with Senji against someone else, they both rely on each other taking certain openings when they're available.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He is a nice and friendly guy, but he won't hesitate to call someone out in their bullshit or even kill them.
* BloodyMurder: He uses his blood as ammunition for his gun.
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:Presumably as Ganta is alive and well as of the final chapter.]]
* CastFromHitPoints: Well, when you are using your [[AbnormalAmmo blood as ammunition]] that you shoot at other people, your hit points are literally your ammo. Ganta learns this the hard way during is second fight with Crow.
* CombatPragmatist: Very good at using the environment to his advantage, and throws in headbutts and such. When fighting [[spoiler: The Wretched Egg]] towards the end of the manga, he actually gets up close to exchange blows.
* CouldntFindAPen: [[spoiler:Drew his symbol on Shiro's hand, in his own blood.]] {{Justified}} due to him being, well, a Deadman, and due to RuleOfSymbolism.
* CoveredWithScars: He accumulates quite a few scars over the course of the series. Not surprising given the hell he goes through. [[spoiler: By the end, his own scaring looks pretty similar to that of Shiro and Hagire. Yes, this is symbolic.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Though "deadpan" is an exaggeration most of the time, in the English Dub of the anime, he has some smartass moments.
* DestructiveSavior: The Woodpecker analogue. The recurring song is that the woodpecker's beak is full of poison and it goes around boring holes in trees, eventually destroying the forest and everything it loves in the process. [[spoiler: Close to the ending of the manga validates him as such.]]
** The Red Man [[spoiler: (AKA his childhood friend Shiro)]] fits this more than Ganta, since he [[spoiler:(actually she) caused the earthquake that devastated Japan,]] slaughtered his friends and classmates, and framed him for it just so he would be in Deadman Wonderland [[spoiler:with her]]. Really, it's just the last fight that nets Ganta the straightforward trope due to just how destructive his [[WaveMotionGun Ganta Gun]] became at the end.
* {{Determinator}}: In the words of Shiro, "Ganta always gets back up."
* DeusAngstMachina[=/=]TraumaCongaLine: Starts off bad in chapter one alone, and only gets worse and worse.
* DifficultButAwesome: Ganta's ability is one of the most powerful single Branches of Sin. However, the shots can't be recycled, so he has to make them count. If he concentrates, he can utilize a sound barrier-breaking variant through just tiny droplets of blood, which are faster, less costly, and more destructive. He can do the opposite and charge the shots to be explosive. This, combined with the long reach means that his power is extremely versatile in addition to being powerful. Unfortunately, the high cost and the inability to aim his shots after firing means he typically has to attack from close range or aim really well. Thankfully, Ganta is very good at choosing his shots. [[spoiler: Comes to a head in the epic Chapter 56, where he counters Shiro's many incredible powers with precise powerful shots, though he can't get a bead on her.]]
* {{Flanderization}}: While it is important to know that Ganta is a mere [[KidHero teenager]], the anime goes out of its way to [[AdaptationalWimp amplify Ganta's]] [[{{Wangst}} negative traits]]. While in the middle of the Dog-Show race, in the manga, Ganta is determined to win in order to live, getting upset when Shiro gets in his way, while in the anime, he wants to quit partway through, and gets beat down by Kozuji for his trouble, and only wins by luck. In another episode, it ends with Ganta being [[MindRape mind-fucked]] with footage from past Carnival Corpses, while in the manga, he is simply disturbed by the storage of parts of other Deadmen.
* FlippingTheBird: He flips off the audience of the Carnival Corpse when they demand that he kill his defeated opponent.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Will eschew his blood powers to physically attack his foes if he has an opportunity. Makes sense, since he needs to conserve as much blood as possible. [[spoiler: He actually attacks The Wretched Egg up close and does pretty well for himself, forcing The Wretched Egg to retreat.]]
* HandCannon: The upgraded form of his Branch of Sin is this. [[spoiler:By the end of the series, it's a full-blown WaveMotionGun that totally levels Deadman Wonderland while fighting The Wretched Egg.]]
* InSeriesNickname: He earns the name "Woodpecker". Coincidentally, there's a recurring little nursery song about Woodpeckers that's pretty relevant to Ganta.
* ItsPersonal: Ganta wants to kill the Red Man in revenge for killing his classmates and having him set up to take the fall. [[spoiler:Learning that the Red Man is Shiro makes him conflicted about how he feels about, and despite initially accepting her challenge to a fight to the death, he ultimately cannot bring himself to kill her and promises to give her a normal life.]]
* MarkedChange: When using his improved Ganta Gun.
* MistakenForMurderer: Deliberately setup to end up in Deadman Wonderland [[spoiler: by Shiro's other self, The Wretched Egg.]]
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent:
** An ordinary middle school student, at least until he encounters the "Red Man".
** [[spoiler:He goes back to being one in the epilogue, though he visits Shiro in the prison hospital every single day, and brings her candy.]]
* ParentalAbandonment:
** [[spoiler:After realizing how dangerous the situation with Shiro was getting, Ganta's mother sends him off on a van while she stays behind. There's also no mention whatsoever of [[DisappearedDad his biological father]].]]
** [[spoiler:Chapter 53 reveals that she did this so that she could finish the Mother Goose System. She [[DrivenToSuicide kills]] [[RedemptionEqualsDeath herself]] shortly after, both to prevent Hagire from learning how to turn it off, and out of guilt for what she did to Shiro.]]
** [[spoiler:Chapter 54 also reveals that before giving birth to Ganta, that she was as heartless as Hagire ever was and had even planned on using her then unborn child as their needed test subject. After his birth, however, motherly instinct kicked in and she gave him to the care of a male doctor who was leaving the facility to save Ganta from the fate that she herself had given him prior.]]
* PersonOfMassDestruction: [[spoiler: Holy God, chapter 56. He and Shiro destroy Deadman Wonderland, as in sinking it ''after'' razing the amusement park to the ground, merely by the crossfire of their attacks.]]
* StockShonenHero: {{Deconstructed}}. At the conclusion of the Forgeries Arc, [[spoiler: Ganta finds out Shiro is The Wretched Egg, and slips into a deep depression. As he returns to Deadman Wonderland, he resolves to kill the Wretched Egg, before realizing the suffering Shiro went through in his absense. In the end, he spares Shiro.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: An incredible leap right before Chapter 56, where he is skilled with his branch of sin and powerful enough [[spoiler: to destroy, absolutely obliterate, level, shred and sink the island Deadman Wonderland is on. The entire time, Shiro is doing the same thing to ''him'', which he deflects.]]
* UnstoppableRage: The death of his friends at the start of the series is an incredible source of anger for him. [[spoiler: It's enough to make him hate Shiro with murderous, homicidal rage. Though he alternates between that and incredibly strong love.]] It's [[SympathyForTheDevil ultimately subverted.]] When push comes to shove in Chapter 56-b, [[spoiler:he can't bring himself to finish Shiro off, and instead wants her to come live a normal life with him.]]
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: At one point when he fights [[spoiler: The Wretched Egg]], he lands a vicious hook to her head. She nimbly flips away, but Ganta reflexively turns, reaches out and grabs her leg to yank her back.

->''Aceman... Has arrived!''

A mysterious but cheery Albino girl, Shiro becomes Ganta's closest friend in the prison. A bit of an airhead with a child-like mind and love for eating bread and candy, Shiro is actually Ganta's ForgottenChildhoodFriend.

She's actually The Red Man aka The Wretched Egg, who is responsible for killing Ganta's friends, the upbeat Shiro is one side of her personality. Her antics as the Wretched Egg in her and Ganta's youth traumatized Ganta into forgetting she ever existed.
----
* BadassAdorable: She's plucky, cute, and she can kick your ass with ease.
* BaitTheDog: For much of the manga, Shiro appears to be an innocent girl [[spoiler: with a murderous split personality that forced her to do horrible things, but it is eventually revealed that that second personality never existed, so Shiro was the real culprit for all those horrible acts.]]
* BerserkButton: Don't bully or insult Ganta in front of her if you value your life.
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:Without her powers, she spends most of the final chapter in a coma in prison, though she does eventually wake up.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: She seems blissfully unaware of her surroundings.
* CoveredWithScars: Under her spandex suit, her body is covered with scars.
* CuteBruiser: The Cutest girl in the show is also [[spoiler:the most powerful being in the show and one responsible for the destruction of Tokyo]].
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: During her childhood, she was subjected to horrible experiments to test her powers.]]
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:The reason she brought Ganta to Deadman Wonderland was so that he would kill her, although this is a lie as revealed in 56-b. She ''wants'' to be a normal girl but since that's highly unlikely to happen, death is her Plan B.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Chapter 55 reveals that she crossed this after finding out from Ganta's mother's journal that she was a replacement subject for Ganta. And she was still a little girl when this happened...]]
* EvilCostumeSwitch: [[spoiler:Once the truth of The Wretched Egg's identity was revealed to Ganta, she ditches her NudeColoredClothes in favor of [[http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkhtfevkcT1qfux8yo1_500.jpg a pink and purple-laced bodysuit with a shackle for a collar.]]]]
* ForgottenChildhoodFriend: [[spoiler:A very tragic variant, as Ganta basically wiped her from his memory over the traumatizing things he witnessed in his childhood.]]
* FrankensteinsMonster: Under her bodysuit, her body is badly scarred, invoking this.
* HealingFactor: She can regenerate any damaged tissue instantly. In the anime, her broken legs visibly snapped back into place in a second, complete with a ''crack'' sound.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Finally admits this [[spoiler:after Ganta refuses to kill her in Chapter 56-b]].
* IdiotHair: She has a permanent cowlick in front of her hair.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Sort of, given that she's now in a prison hospital without any of her healing powers.]]
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: DeconstructedCharacterArchetype.[[spoiler:She portrays herself this way to Ganta, but it's all an act she puts on. Truth is, she resents him and is the one who functionally destroyed his life, then insinuated herself back into his life and played up this version of herself on purpose to get close to him.]]
* MeaningfulName:
** Her name means white in Japanese. Also of note is the fact that the lieutenant general of Unit 731, a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that operated during UsefulNotes/WorldWarII, was named Ishii Shiro. [[spoiler:This is a hint at her origins as a human experiment.]]
** There is also a type of Indian sweet called Shiro, which fits in well with her love of candy.
* RedemptionEarnsLife: [[spoiler: Thanks to Ganta, even after everything that happened.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Sort of. While she's not evil, she is dangerous.
* TheReveal: [[WhamEpisode Chapter 55]] makes it clear [[spoiler:that the personalities of Wretched Egg and Shiro never actually existed. All the evil stuff she did? That was all Shiro, from beginning to end, and she did it all out of resentment. The kicker? [[DeathSeeker She wishes that Ganta will return and kill her]] [[ICannotSelfTerminate since the Mother Goose System wouldn't let her commit suicide.]]]]
* SensualSpandex: And it's [[NudeColoredClothes the same color as her skin]]...
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler: The Red Man/Wretched Egg. Subverted in that it's all an act. Shiro alone did the things the Red Man did as herself and the supposed split personalities never existed.]]
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: [[spoiler: After the prison was shut down. It's actually a subversion; there was never a split personality. Shiro just drops the act and assumes her real personality.]]
* SweetTooth: She loves candy.
* TearsOfJoy: [[spoiler:After Ganta refuses to kill her, draws his symbol on her hand in his blood, and then promises he's going to give her a normal life.]]

->''"Dead Center"''

The first Deadman who Ganta meets, Senji is known as '''Crow'''. He uses his Branches of Sin to form blades extending from his forearms. Enjoying a good fight, Senji supports Ganta after he defeats him in a fight in the Carnival Corpse.
----
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: A minor one, but, during the flashback to his past, Manga!Senji appeared to be the [[WideEyedIdealist fresh-faced]], [[ByTheBookCop newly minted police officer]] that would change the world following the Earthquake. By contrast, in the OVA, Senji is a rude, [[Film/DirtyHarry Dirty Harry]]-esque cop, gets into fights with his fellow officers, tells his own squad off, flips off his captain, and seems to be an overall [[FlatCharacter rather uninteresting character]].
* BigBrotherMentor: He becomes this to Ganta as he grows very close to the kid after beating him in a fight.
* BigDamnHeroes: He tends to be the master of this.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: The power of his Branch of Sin, which forms one of these made of his own blood.
* BloodKnight: Senji very much loves a good fight and expressing his eagerness to get into a brawl with a SlasherSmile.
-->'''Senji''': You little fuck... What the hell's wrong with you!? Think you can just square off with whoever you damn well please? You don't get to fight 'less I get front-row!
** [[spoiler: Downplayed after his past is revealed.]]
* CatchPhrase:
** "Dead Center."
** "Ssslice!" in the English manga translation.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Ganta befriends him in their second fight.
* DubNameChange: Goes from '''Kiyomasa Senji''' in the sub to '''Senji Kiyomasa''' in the English dub. Most likely by accident.
* EyeScream: He loses his right eye as a penalty for losing a fight to Ganta.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Downplayed. Characters either refer to him as simply 'Senji' or 'Crow', with Ganta calling him "Senji-san". The only one who refers to him by his given name is himself, strangely enough.
* FanOfUnderdog: He supports Ganta at his match with Minatsuki.
* HadToComeToPrisonToBeACrook: Before coming to prison, was [[spoiler:an honest cop]].
* HandicappedBadass: He loses his eye as a penalty for losing to Ganta[[spoiler: and loses his arm later on,]] but can still kick ass.
* HeroicBuild: He has very muscular physique.
* TheLastDJ: Prior to coming to Deadman Wonderland, [[spoiler:was the last honest cop on the police force]].
* MrFanservice: As much as there can be one.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: He says this to Shiro the first time they meet.
-->'''Senji''': Argh! Just put this on, lady! Full-body tights are too risque!
* SpikyHair: As evident in the picture above, his hair is spiky.
* TattooedCrook: He has the initials DSMK tattooed above his right eyebrow, which represents [[spoiler: the names of his dead friends in the police force.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: He was already a badass, but when confronting Mockingbird, who has dozens if not hundreds of powers, and his two agile, gun-wielding guards, Senji is able to hold off ''all'' of them with his close range blades, eventually killing the guards and giving Mockingbird a hell of a fight. This after being trashed by the Mockingbird just shortly before.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: The guy is shirtless 99% of the time.

[[folder:Minatsuki Takami/"Hummingbird"]]
-->'''Voiced by''': Creator/IoriNomizu (JP), Creator/LeahClark (EN)
-->'''Branch of Sin:''' Whip [[PrehensileHair Wing]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Minatsuki_Takami_6362.png]]

Yoh's sister, also known as '''Hummingbird'''. A CombatSadomasochist, Minatsuki is a bit of a psychopath and enjoys harming others, caused by the abandonment of her mother during the Tokyo earthquake ten years ago. Yoh looks out for her, although she believes he is obsessive. She has a fondness for flowers, and her Branches of Sin extend from her hair.
----
* AxCrazy: It may not seem obvious at first, but just you wait until she reveals her "true self".
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She acts sweet and nice at first, but her niceness is just an act since she's really a foul-mouthed sadist. As the series goes on, she makes less of an effort to hide her real personality.
%%* BloodKnight: The little chick really, ''really'' loves to fight.
* BrotherSisterIncest: [[spoiler: Accuses Yoh of this on a regular basis after her fight with Ganta. This is even PlayedForLaughs. Again, it's not clear if it's just RefugeInAudacity on her part, or if there is actually truth to any of her claims.]]
* ChainedByFashion: Her wrists are loosely chained together for no apparent reason. Evidence seems to suggest it's because she ''likes'' it. This was dropped by the final arc.
* ClusterFBomb: When her first episode was aired on Toonami, there were twenty-two censor bleeps. ''Nineteen'' came from Minatsuki. Although even Creator/LeahClark was surprised "Why don't you jack off in a bottle of formaldehyde and call it our firstborn?!" made it through unedited.
* CombatSadomasochist: She gets off on the feelings of pain and betrayal she causes in others. She's not totally uncomfortable with being hurt herself, either.
* CombinationAttack: [[spoiler:She performs one of these with Peacock: A thorn-covered whip they used against Uzume Sumeragi.]]
* ConsummateLiar: [[ItRunsInTheFamily Much like her brother,]] she's a pathological liar and a ''very'' good actress. It's implied that Ganta wasn't the first to fall for her 'fake {{moe}} act.'
* CuteAndPsycho: She switches from adorable TheIngenue to a vicious bitch in seconds. Justified as the first is an act.
* CutenessProximity: To an armadillo. She actively tries to fight it.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: 'Friendship' might be [[{{Jerkass}} a bit of a stretch]], at first, anyway, but she drops most of her more overt antagonism towards Ganta after her Carnival Corpse match against him.
* DefrostingIceQueen: [[spoiler:She becomes less of a BloodKnight and even a bit more optimistic as the series goes on.]]
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Ganta. Ganta was framed for a murder he didn't commit, while Minatsuki was convicted of murder for a clear-cut case of self-defense. They were railroaded by the same court and the same crooked defense attorney. Both were abandoned by their mothers. The difference? Minatsuki reacted to all this by becoming completely insane. Becomes FridgeHorror when you consider that Minatsuki has been in Deadman Wonderland in general and G-block in particular a lot longer than Ganta, and so it's a distinct possibility that Ganta is headed down the same road and it just hasn't set in yet.
** A key difference between Ganta and Minatsuki, though, is [[spoiler:Minatsuki was already crazy before coming to Deadman Wonderland due to the [[FreudianExcuse trauma with her mother leaving her to die]]. This shows in both her admitting to Ganta that she was crazy before she came to Deadman Wonderland and that she lied to her brother about her Dad raping her, so that her brother would kill her father. Her reason? A mixture of ForTheEvulz and the fact that she gets off on betraying, manipulating and being cruel to others. Granted, this past is highly questionable due to Minatsuki being an UnreliableNarrator.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She may be an AxCrazy SociopathicHero, but even she was disgusted when she [[spoiler: learned the truth about the truth behind the Nameless Worm Virus and what horrible things Rin'ichiro Hagire and Sorae Igarashi did to Shiro.]]
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: She goes ballistic upon learning that [[spoiler: Yoh knew she was lying all along, and still cared for her as a sister.]]
* TheFakeCutie: At first she deliberately acts like a sweet, demure girl, but this hides her true personality of a foul-mouthed, sadistic sociopath. Later on, she drops the act altogether.
* FreudianExcuse: During the earthquake, she was shaken off and abandoned by her mother as their home collapsed around them. It's worse in the anime, where her mother turns around and picks up a shattered pot of primroses right next to where she's trapped under a pile or rubble and runs off with the flowers.
* HeelFaceTurn: More or less dropped all antagonism after Ganta defeated her in their fight, and joins the heroes in their ventures afterwards. All of her more disturbing traits are increasingly downplayed, as well.
* InnocentFlowerGirl: Subverted. She acts shy and sweet and grows flowers, but her nice personality is just an act.
* LittleMissBadass: Cute, diminutive and she can kill you in a hundred different ways.
* LovableSexManiac: A deadlier version. In her fight with Ganta, she says she gets off by looking at the faces of people in pain. She later stops this though.
* MakesUsEven: In the anime, she repays Ganta for having the Penalty Game rigged to let her off with a haircut instead of the usual OrganTheft by slaughtering a squad of Undertakers after they cornered him while he was en route to the confrontation with Genkaku. She makes it clear that this doesn't mean she wants anything to do with [[LaResistance Scar Chain]], and only did this because she felt like she owed him. This didn't happen in the manga.
* MisanthropeSupreme: Minatsuki has a seriously low opinion of people in general.
* {{Moe}}: Invoked; Minatsuki introduces herself as the perfect moe archetype at first, small, shy, cute, meek, virginal, and afraid to hurt a fly. This is inverted when she reveals that the whole "moe" act is just a facade, and that she's really a sadistic sociopath who ''likes'' fighting, can and will kick your ass and torture you to turn her on, and is, on the whole, a CombatPragmatist who is ''really'' not inexperienced with pain. Even after her defeat with Ganta and she mellows out a bit, you still only piss her off if you have a death wish.
* MommyIssues: Her cruel nature comes from her mother leaving her to die in the Great Tokyo Earthquake.
* MsFanservice: PlayedForLaughs whenever she's not fighting and in her {{Moe}} phase, but takes a darker turn as she's also one of the only girls who was shown naked on-screen, [[spoiler:which was when she set up the act of being raped by her dad]].
* NeverBeHurtAgain: [[spoiler:To keep anyone from abandoning her the way her mother did, she deliberately acts as crass and cruel as she can so that no one will ever get close to her.]]
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Ganta calls her out on being a BitchInSheepsClothing, saying that if she hates her mother so damn much, [[GenerationXerox why the hell would she act like her then?!]] Possibly why she drops the act eventually.
* PrehensileHair: Her Branch of Sin extends out of her hair.
* RapeAsBackstory: By her father. [[spoiler:...Except not really.]]
* ShipTease: [[spoiler:There's been quite a bit of it with her and Ganta throughout the series, but Chapter 37 has the most obvious example. Never really goes anywhere, though.]]
* SirSwearsALot: She's one of the most fouled-mouth characters in the manga.
* SociopathicHero: Special emphasizes on the ''sociopath'' part.
* TokenEvilTeammate: She easily the most unstable and brutal of the main characters, as some of them are somewhat off-put by how far she goes in her fights, but compared to the likes of Tamaki and [[spoiler: Rin'ichiro Hagire]] she isn't that horrible of a person.
* TraumaticHaircut: [[spoiler:Lost most of her hair during a Penalty Game after losing to Ganta.]]
* UnreliableNarrator: Minatsuki lies a lot, using her lies to get sympathy often. This puts her past into question quite often.
* WhipOfDominance: Her Branch of Sin, Whip Wing, forms whips that [[PrehensileHair extend out of her hair]]. Which is a fitting weapon for her given she's a CuteAndPsycho who gets a [[{{Sadist}} sexual thrill out of the suffering of others]] and has CombatSadomasochist tendencies when using them in battle.

A friendly UsefulNotes/{{Transgender}} woman known as '''Peacock'''. She was imprisoned after murdering a woman her lover was caught with. She acts as an announcer for the Carnival Corpse matches.
----
* AccidentalMurder: [[spoiler:After finding her lover was cheating on her, Chaplin slammed the woman against the wall, but at the same time her Branch of Sin activated for the first time and killed the woman. Chaplin was horrified after what she did and it's obvious that she did not intend to kill her.]]
* AdaptedOut: She doesn't appear at all in the anime adaptation.
* BerserkButton: Do not call her by her birth name Masaru.
* BewaretheNiceOnes: Chaplin is a rather nice person but don't piss her off, she is an experienced Deadman who has incredible control over her Branch of Sin.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Likes to try and drum these up with Minatsuki. It rarely works out.
* CombinationAttack: [[spoiler:Does this with Minatsuki against Uzume Sumeragi, one of the Complete Forgeries. They combined their Branches of Sin to create a whip covered in thorns, and promptly handed her ass back to her just as she was about to use her finishing move.]]
* EpicFlail: Peacock's Peak, her Branch of Sin. They resemble miniature morning stars.
* FemmeFatalons: Averted. She has long nails, but she's not a bad person.
* LovableSexManiac: She's harmless, though. Just an audacious flirt.
* NiceGirl: Chaplin is a fairly kind individual who attempts to help others who are in distress.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her usual outfit is a black halter top with black panties, fishnet stockings, a vest lined with fur, and high-heeled boots.

A member of the Scar Chain gang hoping to expose the prison's true purpose. Known as '''Game Fowl'''. She has a crush on Nagi.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Her obvious tan is never explained.
* BattleAxeNurse:
** The good variant, of course. Though her friends think the occupation is at odds with her nature, her aspirations to ProperLady-hood would make it an obvious career choice. The "Battle Axe" part is sadly just Karako being herself.
** Oddly enough, in practice she appears to be an expert trauma surgeon, despite being specifically noted to be a nurse.
* BloodKnight: Subtle in the anime, but it's there. Just look at her smile whenever she fights.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Her Branch of Sin hardens her blood around her hands and feet, giving her blows increased strength.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Not quite in the same way Shiro's HealingFactor works, but after [[spoiler:she was stabbed by Genkaku]], she used her Branch of Sin to crystalize the blood caused by the wound, stopping the bleeding and most likely saving her life.
%%* HospitalHottie: Was this before being incarcerated.
* TheLancer: To Nagi; she's a black skinned female with blood armor while he's a fair skinned brunette male who attacks with projectiles. She's a BloodKnight and he's an ApologeticAttacker. [[spoiler: Later takes his place as TheLeader following his death.]]
* NumberTwo: To Nagi. [[spoiler: Before becoming the Number One.]]
* SignificantWhiteHairDarkSkin: Her short white hair and tan brown skin help her to stand out as one of the titular Deadmen the series named for.
* SuperToughness: She's able to use her Branch of Sin for defensive purposes, covering herself in crystallized blood, giving her a shiny, defensive coat reminiscent of [[Comicbook/XMen Emma Frost]]. It's not clear just how tough it is, though she can apparently survive being doused in ''boiling acid'' sprayed by [[KillerRobot Necro Macro]] with it and walk away unscathed.

* AxCrazy: [[spoiler: He goes berserk after being made BrainwashedAndCrazy by Genkaku.]]
* FakeMemories: [[spoiler: Subverted. During his torture, Nagi screams that the memories of him going on a rampage were planted by Genkaku's injections, but they weren't. He just repressed them under stress. The drugs actually ''brought out'' the real memories.]]
* HeartbrokenBadass: The loss of his wife and daughter really drove Nagi over the edge.
* KirkSummation: Gives a pretty scathing to Hibana:
-->"So you're… a lady… The most I could ever call you is a little girl and nothing close to proper at that, a sad, sick twisted little girl with a rotten heart."
%%* TheLeader: Type IV of the Scar Chain.

* MisanthropeSupreme: Under his StepfordSmiler facade, Nagi hates everyone for being alive while his family was killed.
%%* MementoMacGuffin: His locket and his scarf.
* NotBrainwashed: [[spoiler:He tells Karako he is ''quite'' sane before going on a rampage against Scar Chain]].

* ChewingTheScenery: It's extremely obvious that Creator/JunFukuyama and David Trosko were milking episode ten for all it was worth.
* CombatSadomasochist: [[spoiler:His reaction when people on ''his side'' get cut in half.]]
* CreepyShadowedUnderEyes: Of the ExhaustedEyeBags variety.

The true antagonist of the series. Toto Sakigami, or '''Mockingbird''', has been missing since he won the previous Carnival Corpse tournament but reappears claiming to know Shiro. Seemingly a nice guy, he is actually evil, with a diet of Branches of Sin. His real name is Rin'ichiro Hagire.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: Ganta Gun [[spoiler:... though he can't use the upgraded form, [[HandCannon Ganbare Gun]]]]
* AffectionateNickname:
** Had one for Yosuga, his '[[NotBloodSiblings older sister]].'
** [[spoiler:Shiro referred to Hagire's second body as 'Grandpa,' despite knowing they weren't really related.]]
* AxCrazy: [[spoiler:Hagire in later chapters. The original Toto was apparently only this while in the ring, but was otherwise a pretty nice guy.]]
* BigBad: Toto, [[spoiler:or rather Rin'ichiro Hagire, is the main antagonist of the story, being partially responsible for Shiro's transformation into the Wretched Egg and seeking to fully unseal her powers.]]
* BodySurf: [[spoiler:Hagire can possess people's bodies and overwrite their personality completely, going from body to body.]]
* CameBackWrong: After winning the last Corpse Carnival, he lost all of his Branches of Sin, his body became a fragile FrankensteinsMonster construction, and his personality did a complete 180.
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler: The Chairman was using/toying with Tamaki the whole time.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Seemed to be slightly delusional and very playful before the last Carnival Corpse tourney.
* DeadlyUpgrade: [[spoiler: For the final battle, Hagire installs caps all over Toto's body that allow him to hemorrhage blood with little effort, turning him into a walking armory of Branch of Sin. He loses blood at such a high rate that he's practically mummified himself before the other Deadmen finish him off.]]
* DeadPersonImpersonation: [[spoiler:A lot of people actually ''did'' think he was Toto Sakigami for a while, although they noticed the drastic change in his personality before realizing he was Hagire.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: He's the BigBad but his [[spoiler:death two chapters before the finish]] leaves Ganta time for a climactic end with [[spoiler:The Wretched Egg/Shiro]] for the ultimate conflict.
* DissonantSerenity: He's awfully cheerful for being in a hellhole like Deadman Wonderland. [[spoiler:Mostly because Hagire is ''freaking insane'', and he's the guy in charge of it.]]
* TheDreaded: The most feared Deadman alive this side of The Wretched Egg; being put in a match with him was a death sentence. Even ''Crow'' was visibly nervous just by being in the same room as him.
* DyingAsYourself: [[spoiler: When he sees the fake gun, Toto remembers that his Onee-chan was his reason for living. Tragically enough, Hagire killed her with Toto's body.]]
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: [[spoiler:Seemed genuinely confused as to why Yosuga saved his life after Senji cut off two of his limbs. Her response? "Yosuga has... always been Toto's 'Nee-chan,' right?"]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: Don't let his cheerful demeanor fool you, this guy is '''''not''''' nice.

* GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler:Had his body stolen by the Chairman and BigBad, Rinichirou Hagire, the man responsible for torturing Shiro into becoming The Wretched Egg]].
%%* HemoErotic: He literally equates [[InterplayOfSexAndViolence violence with love]].
* HeroicSpirit: [[spoiler:Hagire seems to hate all who bear this, including Ganta, all of LaResistance and even the original Toto.]]
* ImAHumanitarian: He has been known to get the blood needed to copy powers through cannibalism. [[spoiler:Hagire has, anyway, not Toto.]]
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:Hagire does this to Yosuga in chapter 53, right before dying himself.]] Although this delves into an act of StupidEvil, as [[spoiler:she was his sole ally at that point and the only reason he was still alive.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: As of chapter 53 he's gone for good, without the twins he's no longer able to write his memories into anyone else.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler:You can't really have any if you get your jollies torturing a little girl to the point of insanity.]]
* LecherousLicking: [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], though; his PowerCopying abilities require him to ingest a Deadman's blood before he's able to use their powers. He just does it like this for RuleOfCreepy.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To his "older sister" Yosuga, whom he's sworn to kill and be killed by, thus giving them both impetus to survive anything and everything else until then.
* MadScientist: [[spoiler:Hagire was a lunatic even before he started body-hopping. His interference is what made the experiments on Shiro turn into utter atrocities.]]
* NiceGuy: While he was somewhat AxCrazy in the ring outside of it Toto is generally friendly to those who approached him. [[spoiler:Hagire on the other hand is definitely not a good guy.]]
%%* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: He licks people.
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:Once Hagire got hold of his body. Interestingly, Hagire body-hopped from an old geezer into Toto, who was in his late teens at the most.]]
* ParentalSubstitute:
** Toto himself isn't one, but he more or less adopted Yosuga as his "older" sister, despite her being younger than he is. [[LivingEmotionalCrutch They've resolved to kill each other and so won't let themselves be killed by anyone else.]]
** [[spoiler:Hagire, however, could definitely be considered one to [[CreepyTwins Chan and En]], and arguably to a lesser extent, Shiro (after Sorae's death) as well. He just won't be winning any Father of the Year awards any time soon.]]
* PowerCopying: After doing it enough times, it more or less resolves into an all purpose ShapeshifterWeapon made from his blood anywhere on his body. Wings, tentacles, blades, wings made out of blades, etc. [[spoiler:Though, there are a few he ''can't'' copy; specifically, Ganta's Ganbare Gun (though he ''can'' copy the original ability, Ganta Gun), and Shiro/Wretched Egg's Branch of Sin. WordOfGod also stated he wouldn't have been able to copy any of the Forgery Branches of Sin in the series' guidebook, [[http://deadmanwonderland.wikia.com/wiki/The_Irrational_World The Irational World.]]]]
* PsychopathicManChild: Was by all accounts vicious in battle, but outside the ring is childish and playful, hardly paying anything serious mind.
* RasputinianDeath:[[spoiler: In his first showdown with the Deadmen, he loses two limbs. At the start of the final battle, he's a hobbling, desiccated shell that spews weaponized blood in all directions. Finally, he's whipped into the air, Frankensteiner'd onto a bed of spikes, lit on fire, and then blown to shreds by Ganta's enhanced Ganta Gun.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers an absolutely ''vicious'' one to [[spoiler:Tamaki]], leading to his immediate VillainousBreakdown.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:In a sense. The real Toto Sakigami took over right in the last seconds of Hagire's life, for one last view of [[ChekhovsGun Yosuga's plastic gun]].]]
* SelfSurgery: [[spoiler:Does this an awful lot. There's a reason the seams and stitches all over his body are [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything eerily similar]] to those of Shiro, and why he exhibits many of the same symptoms she had early on in her experimentation...]]
* TheSociopath: [[spoiler: Hagire is this in spades. A monstrous AxCrazy MadScientist with both an astonishing disregard of human life other than himself and a vicious streak that never really seems to have a limit.]]
* TheresNoKillLikeOverkill: [[spoiler:Deservedly ends up on the receiving end of this in chapter 53. Nearly every member of Ganta's crew has their fun beating the bastard to a bloody pulp before Ganta fittingly deals the finishing blow.]]
* VillainHasAPoint: [[spoiler:When Sorae Igarashi activates the Mother Goose System, Hagire demands that she deactivate it so Shiro's powers can be unleashed. Sorae then tells him that she would not tell him because she does not want him to make Shiro suffer, to which Hagire then declares that she does not have any room to talk because her hands are just as dirty as his, a point that she does not deny.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:Hagire breaks down into screaming at the Deadmen about how he can't be dying before he finds out what love is after they each assail him, before Ganta finishes him off.]]
* VillainousGlutton: And his palate of choice consists of blood and human flesh.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Toto doesn't shut up about it. [[spoiler: Hagire doesn't understand the concept at all, but mentally associates it with violence against Shiro - hence why his ultimate goal is to get a body that can fight and kill her over and over again until he knows what it is.]]
%%* {{Yandere}}: [[spoiler:Hagire, to Wretched Egg. To an obscene degree.]]

A Deadman, and the "older sister" of Toto Sakigami in G Block, despite being younger than Toto and them not being blood-related. She appears late in the story, to take part in the mission to return to Deadman Wonderland.
----
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:Types II and IV. She doesn't agree with Hagire's goals - and in fact makes it pretty clear she doesn't like Hagire himself at all - but damn it, she is not going to let her 'brother' die, and wants nothing more than to have ''her'' Toto back.]]
* BrotherSisterIncest: Played with. She tells Ganta she was in love with Toto, but despite them having 'adopted' each other as surrogate siblings and are for all intents and purposes serious about it, they're NotBloodSiblings.
* DeathSeeker: Prior to becoming Toto's new official 'Nee-chan'. To the point where she actually questioned if her Branch of Sin was keeping her alive against her will.
* DeclarationOfProtection:
** Toto was really, '''really''' fond of his 'sister.' Before [[spoiler:Hagire took him over]], if you knew what was good for you, you did ''not'' mess with her.
** She returned the favor later. [[spoiler: … sort of. Not only did she save Hagire's life after Senji dismembered him, she used her Branch of Sin to block the attacks of several other Deadmen when he recovered.]]
* GirlishPigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails, which sit above her headband.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: [[spoiler:Pleads with Hagire to let her be with Toto again. [[KickTheDog He kills her instead]].]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Her and Toto more or less adopted each other as surrogate siblings. They were probably the only friends either of them ever had in Deadman Wonderland.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: [[spoiler:Her Branch of Sin is strong enough to block four other Branches of Sin at the same time without budging, though it's stated earlier in the manga that she has difficulty controlling it.]]
%%* MoralityPet: To Toto. [[spoiler:... not quite to Hagire, though.]]
%%** Although, she ''does'' point out [[spoiler:that Hagire didn't ''completely'' rewrite Toto's personality, and still has many of his mannerisms. The fact that he didn't just attack her on sight like he did everyone else who set foot in Deadman Wonderland speaks volumes.]]
* [[ParentalSubstitute Sibling Substitute]]: Toto's new 'sister.' She was [[PetTheDog promoted to this]] after he witnessed her being bullied, but not before he [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown ripped her harassers to shreds.]]
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Kind of. Her usual outfit appears to be a long, oversized sweatshirt which doubles as a skirt of sorts, worn over tights which she wears as pants.
* SiblingYinYang: Toto is childish and playful and universally feared amongst the other Deadmen. She was a quiet, introverted DeathSeeker who enjoyed reading, and was routinely bullied before Toto started protecting her. [[spoiler:Turned up to eleven when it comes to Hagire, who she still refers to as her 'younger brother.']]
* SuicidePact: Ironically, her 'reason for living.' [[spoiler:Well, it's more like a 'Mutual Simultaneous Homicide Pact,' but close enough.]] It's also why she refuses to believe her Toto is gone for good.
* ThickerThanWater: Somewhat subverted in the sense that Toto isn't really her brother. 433
The chief guard of the prison, Makina takes nonsense from nobody and is more than willing to wound an inmate who gets on her bad side. She has a firm disliking for Tamaki, and investigates the true purposes of Deadman Wonderland.
----
* BadassNormal: She doesn't have a Branch of Sin, but is still lethal on her own.
* BigGood: [[spoiler:After her HeelFaceTurn she leads the Infiltration team in Operation Mother-Gizmo Reinforcement in order to infiltrate Deadman Wonderland and set the Mother Goose System to maximum.]]
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her G-Cup chest is a constant source of Kasuga's attraction to her.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Her assistant is in love with her.
* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler:Wheelchair-bound after fighting Wretched Egg. She gets better in the epilogue, though]].
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Surprisingly, her simplistic view of justice allied her ''with'' the heroes, instead of against them.]]
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Her KnightTemplar tendencies forced her to try and uncover the conspiracy surrounding Deadman Wonderland on her own from the other side of the fence, as it were.
* JerkAss: In her introduction she is harsh to the inmates and (non-lethally) slices Yoh's chest when he interrupts. [[note]]Also because she caught him stealing Ganta's candy and he wouldn't admit to it when she ordered him to give it back.[[/note]] [[spoiler:However, her rather one-dimensional view of justice inadvertently sided her with some of the more moral prisoners against the warden, after which she was a useful ally. She just kind of settled down after that.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Makina is a harsh, stone-cold enforcer, who doesn't hesitate to punish, often brutally, the prison population, but she also cares for her friends and those she calls comrades.
* MsFanservice: By far the bustiest girl of the entire cast, especially when she's wearing a skintight bodysuit. She even puts Minatsuki to shame.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: She's Deadman Wonderland's chief guard, and by far the most lethal non-superpowered character.

Makina's assistant, Kasuga is usually seen by her boss's side. Kasuga often praises Makina and asks her personal questions, which Makina often answers.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: She's blonde in the manga and a BrainyBrunette in the anime.
* MysteriousPast: The anime gives away one hint about her background during the closing credits: [[spoiler:she's shown as a student at Nagano Middle School, with Idaki as her teacher and Rokuro as a fellow student]].
* NiceGirl: Her personality is a firm juxtaposition to her boss and the other guards, as she's never seen harming any of the prisoners and is rather kind.
* SubordinateExcuse: Hints of this in regards to Makina, openly asking "[[BuxomBeautyStandard What's your secret?]]" while in the locker room, enjoying being placed in MarshmallowHell, and offering to give her a massage afterward.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Unlike the rest of the Deadman Wonderland staff, Kasuga is rather a kind and caring individual and is never seen brutalizing any of the prisoners.

The childish but intelligent assistant warden and promoter of Deadman Wonderland, Tamaki believes he is the mastermind behind the prison and its secrets. A VillainWithGoodPublicity, Tamaki is seemingly allowed to get away with all of his vile actions due to his status... for a while.
----
* AmoralAttorney: He posed as Ganta's lawyer during his trial, making sure that Ganta would be found guilty.
* AxCrazy: It becomes clear soon after we see him that there's something evidently wrong with him despite his cheerful demeanour. But when the [[MaskOfSanity wall separating his true nature]] does come down, it reveals that he has nothing ''resembling'' sanity.
* BigBad: He is the primary antagonist for most of the series, being the man who more or less runs Deadman Wonderland (with The Director, a frail old man, having very little to do with the series with his worsening health), as well as the leader of the Undertakers and 1st Unit Forgeries. Everything from the very beginning to the Forgeries arc ultimately has him driving the conflict as the man responsible for how Deadman Wonderland is run.
* BigBadWannabe: [[spoiler:Ultimately, however, it's revealed this was only due to Hagire's manipulations. Hagire simply allowed Tamaki to believe he was the villain of the story because it suited him and it was a good way for Hagire to be able to act: with everyone focusing on Tamaki, Hagire in both his bodies throughout the series could act from behind the scenes. Tamaki realizing he was ''not'' the actual mastermind behind everything happening is what leaves him to his VillainousBreakdown.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:He shoots himself in the head to prevent Toto from taking his belief that the prison was his game.]]

[[spoiler:When the Great Tokyo Earthquake occurs and causes a power outage, he immediately only focuses on starting the backup generator so he can continue playing his games, all the while completely ignoring his mother's pleas for help and leaving her to die. 495----
* TheDragon: To Tamaki, as he put her in charge [[spoiler:of creating the Forgeries.]]
* HospitalHottie: She's obviously a very attractive doctor and wears clothing that accentuates this. Much to Crow's chagrin.
* TheNameless: She is unnamed in the manga and anime, only having her name given in supplementary material.
* LaserGuidedKarma: After spending the previous chapters taking sexual gratification in mutilating Deadman, [[spoiler:she is eventually eviscerated by Wretched Egg]]. Who happens to be the ''Ultimate'' Deadman. Fancy that.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: Only referred by the manga as "The Doctor".
* NightmareFetishist: She's a twisted doctor who is not merely a sadist, but actually aroused by human suffering and mutilation.
* TooKinkyToTorture: At one point, Tamaki ends up grabbing her by the throat in a threatening matter, only for her to be ''aroused'' by this. Even he appears to be creeped out by this and promptly releases after stating: "that ''wasn't'' meant for your enjoyment".
* TortureTechnician: Removing a body part or an organ from a living person (''''without anaesthesia'''') is her favourite part of the job. She likes it so much she's hugely disappointed when she can only cut Minatsuki's hair as a punishment for losing a match because it's not "exciting".

* BrainUploading: [[spoiler:Their Branch of Sin lets them do this. 517* CreepyTwins: They're a pair of albino twins who always speak in unison.
* {{Cyborg}}: [[spoiler:Their backstory showed that they were born with half a brain each, and the only reason they were even alive (despite being in a vegetative state) was due to their Branch of Sin compensating for their missing brains. Hagire took them in, and gave them a cybernetic implant to replace the missing halves of their brains via their Branch of Sin. This caused them to become SingleMindedTwins, and is also the reason for their UndyingLoyalty.]]
* DanceBattler: In terms of combat, they're some of the most acrobatic fighters in the entire series. What's more, due to them having a single mind, their attacks were perfectly synchronized with one another, making them able to attack from multiple directions at once. However, [[spoiler:Senji was able to [[HoistByHisOwnPetard exploit this]], because their synchronized style of fighting also made them predictable]].
* TheDragon: Both of them act as this to the chairman.
* LoveMartyr: [[spoiler:Knew that Toto/Hagire didn't love them back, but died for him anyway.]]
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: To use their Branch of Sin, they [[spoiler:each cut off an arm]] without so much as flinching.
* MeaningfulName: Their names are likely derived from [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang_and_Eng_Bunker Chang and Eng Bunker]], a famous pair of conjoined twins.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: Went unnamed in the manga until the 2011 anime premiered, which would later be adopted by the manga, come the final arc.

Leader of the 1st Undertaker Platoon. A self-proclaimed "super monk", he kills people under the belief it will free them from their suffering. He wields a guitar which doubles as a pair of machine guns.
----
* AdaptationalSeriousness: During the first fight with Scar Chain, Shiro breaks his guitar. In the manga, Genkaku is sent off in tears, crying over his smashed guitar. In the anime, he doesn't seem to be bothered by is precious guitar is smashed.
* AdaptationalSympathy: Before his [[BreakThemByTalking final speech to Ganta]], the anime adds an extra line to his speech, where Genkaku is heavily implied to be [[DeathSeeker suicidal]], but cannot be 'saved' [[ICannotSelfTerminate until someone else someone else ends his life]].
-->'''Genkaku (Sub)''': "I'll keep saving everyone, until someone saves me."
-->'''Genkaku (Dub)''': "Until I'm saved, this is what I do."
** The Dub takes it one step further, adding in another line after his [[BreakThemByTalking final monologue]]:
--> "I just wish someone would be kind enough to do the same for me!"
* AdultsAreUseless: The head monk at Genkaku's monastery never even considered that the reason Genkaku always appeared so beat up was because the other monks were physically and sexually abusing him, assuming instead that Genkaku was getting into fights that he instigated.
* AxCrazy: By far the most insane of all the Undertakers. By the end of it, Genkaku has gone on a rampage and slaughtered all of his subordinates.
* BadassLongRobe: That is flame printed no less.
* BadassNormal: Being an Undertaker, he's one of the few non-Deadmen who can go up against a Deadman and win.
* BadassPreacher: He is a buddhist monk, after all.
* DeathSeeker: Anime-Only, although he has shades of it in the manga as he smiles during Owl's TakingYouWithMe attempt and asks if he's going to "save" him.
* EvilRedhead: Red haired and the most sadistic of all the Undertakers.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Genkaku acts chummy and casual, but he's a sadistic lunatic underneath it.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler:He was beaten and raped ''repeatedly'' when he was young, and his [[MoralityPet kitty]] died.]]
* GoodShepherd: He calls himself an 'uber monk' ("Super Monk" in the Viz manga) who saves souls, but it's just him being FauxAffablyEvil.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:Though chapter 40 indicates that he's still alive, but unconscious and in critical condition.]].
* GratuitousEnglish: "Heyoo, fahking guyz!"
* GunsAkimbo: His guitar can function as a pair of machine guns. Well, before he got it upgraded into '''[[RuleOfCool a compressed air cannon gun]]'''.
* TheGunSlinger: His guitar doubles as two machine guns.
* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: He has a ''guitar that can turn into two machine guns.'' It later gets upgraded to point where it can blow a football-sized hole through a man's ''torso. Spine included.''
%%* InLoveWithYourCarnage: Towards Nagi.
* InsistentTerminology: He's not a monk, he's a ''super''-monk, this got changed to "Uber"-monk in the dub.
* InstrumentOfMurder: His guitar can transform into a pair of machine guns, and later gets upgraded into a cannon.
* KarmaHoudini: He manages to come out alive in the fight between him and Nagi despite being the one responsible for killing his wife and driving him to insanity.
* LawOfDisproportionateResponse: He doesn't bat an eye at a bunch of people dying, but breaks down crying when Shiro destroys his electric guitar.
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler:He manages to survive a blow from Ganta's Ganbare Gun.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: Towards [[spoiler: Nagi]]. Genkaku broke through Nagi's facade and unleashed his anger.
* MetalHead: He seems to like the metal genre of music, and he even wields a guitar that can turn into a pair of guns.
* MisanthropeSupreme: Genkaku truly believes he's saving people by killing them.
* MoreThanMindControl: He manages to make [[spoiler:Nagi temporarily revert back to being berserk and AxCrazy by convincing and reminding him that he doesn't actually have any hope for a family and that [[FakeMemories most of his happy memories are made up]]]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Manga Only.
* RedOniBlueOni: Compared to his partner Hibana, who is cold and calculating, he is very clearly {{HotBlooded}} and impulsive.
* SaveTheVillain: An interesting variant. In the anime, [[spoiler:taking a Ganbare Gun to the face is probably preferable to what '''almost''' happened to him considering he's confirmed alive in the manga; right before Ganta's MarkedChange, Shiro went [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Wretched Egg]], and would have slaughtered Genkaku and probably everyone else in room except Ganta had he not taken the initiative... without realizing what had just happened to Shiro, of course]]. 599%%* AxCrazy

* {{BFS}}: The sword that she wields is twice the size of her entire body.

* ImprobableHairstyle: Her hair is tied up in a ridiculously long ponytail that somehow stands almost straight up.
* KnightTemplar: She has a very twisted sense of justice.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: When arrested, said she was taking orders from her dead mother.
* ObliviouslyEvil: She doesn't actually understand the concept of proportional response. All that torture she endured from her mother convinced her that extreme acts of violence were the appropriate punishment for misbehavior.
* RedOniBlueOni: The methodically calculating (Blue) to Genkaku's impulsive recklessness (Red). Made more clear in the manga with their eye colors.
* VillainousBreakdown: Started protesting through tears that she ''was'' a lady after Nagi told her that she wasn't one, and made her have a flash back about her abuse from her crazy mother.
* WhipSword: Her weapon of choice. It's actually blunt, which is arguably ''worse''.

* AdaptationDyeJob: Has blond hair in the manga, brown in the anime.
* AllForNothing: Goes through Hell to acquire enough CP to pay off his sister's sentence... only to learn that G Ward prisoners ''can't'' have their sentences bought off.
* BadassNormal: He is the only one of the main characters who isn't a Deadman, but he uses his kleptomania to disable a giant terrifying robot and is a very cunning liar.
* BecomingTheMask: Even though he initially befriended him for his own benefit, Yoh eventually sees Ganta's good heart and comes to see him as a true friend. [[spoiler:He proves this, for example, when he cannot bring himself to tell Ganta what Yō has seen Shiro do, especially after Ganta recalls his memories with the albino girl.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: Yoh is in Deadman Wonderland to [[spoiler:earn the freedom of his sister, Minatsuki, who killed their father]].
* BrotherSisterIncest:
** Minatsuki accuses him of this on a regular basis after her fight with Ganta. This is even PlayedForLaughs. It's otherwise left ambiguous as to whether there is any substance to those claims.
** If anything, she's more guilty of it than he is; [[{{Squick}} she claimed that his "hopeless face" gets her off]].
* ButtMonkey: Mainly in the anime. Thanks to Azami getting AdaptedOut, he ends up getting her own share of punishment added to his own. As a result the guy ends up getting beat up or injured in practically every episode he's in.
* ChekhovsSkill: He's a kleptomaniac who [[spoiler:'steals' Makina's Worm Eater sword, which was how he was able to help the rest of LaResistance bypass Yosuga's otherwise seemingly impenetrable shield Branch of Sin, allowing them to give Mockingbird the NoHoldsBarredBeatdown of his life.]]

* ConsummateLiar: He's as good at lying as he is stealing.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: He has brown eyes to match his brown hair.
* GroinAttack: Happens off screen by his sister. He's seen talking to her alone in a room and later on the scene cuts back to him staggering out of the room cupping his genitals while moaning in pain. It was enough to bring him to the floor.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: His hair covers one of his eyes, which indicates his untrustworthy, deceptive nature.
* TheMole: Spying on Ganta for Tamaki, which Ganta actually figures this out on his own, but flat out doesn't care. He's just glad to have someone around who's (relatively) sane and friendly.
%%* OccultBlueEyes: However he has blue eyes (manga only), and has a few schemes of his own.
* StickyFingers: He loves to steal, which got him in trouble with Warden Makina in the first episode. Later on he steals her [[spoiler:Worm Eater sword.]]

* DeathByAdaptation: In the anime adaptation, he ends up getting impaled in the pit of spikes at the end of the dog race.
* JerkJock: By far the most arrogant and vicious of all the inmates.
* NamesToRunAwayFrom: In his days as a fierce martial arts master he was known as the "pulverizer". In the anime this was changed to the "Ultimate Warrior".
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In the manga, he somehow survives falling into a pit of spikes, and is last seen being threatened by Chief Makina, who gives him the choice of either one year in solidarity confinement or a knife to the heart. 682An ordinary inmate who Ganta befriends, she owns a pet armadillo. Later on, she gets turned into a Forgery, but snaps out of it thanks to Ganta.
----
* BadassLongRobe: [[spoiler:She dons one of these after she gets turned into a Forgery.]]
%%* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:After becoming a Forgery. She gets better, though.]]
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Delivered a successful Snake bite to Wretched Egg. Even though it [[TheWorfBarrage didn't really do anything]] to her due to her HealingFactor, it still made her hesitate. Wretched Egg then curiously asked Azami if she really was Ganta's friend. Right when it looked like Azami might actually be getting through to her, Hagire decapitates her and asks what's taking Wretched Egg so long.]]
* {{Delinquents}}: She's the former leader of an all-girl gang.
* DemotedToExtra: She was one of the first friends Ganta makes inside the prison when she shares her meal with him. She seems like she's going to be a major character but nearly disappears from the story entirely after Ganta is moved to G Ward. [[spoiler:She comes back later after getting turned into a Forgery, but [[DroppedABridgeOnHim is killed pretty shortly after returning to the heroes' side]].]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Was initially this as she was kinda rude, but still shows her soft side when she gives Ganta half of her meal after teaching him about Cast Points, while at the same time scolding him because he didn't read the rulebook. Thanks to her CharacterDevelopment, she grows out her rude attitude.
%%* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:By Hagire.]]
%%* MadnessMantra[=/=]SurvivalMantra: "I'm alright. I'm alright. I'm alright."
%%* TheMole: For Makina.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: Having been let down by both her [[ParentalNeglect neglectful parents]] and her so called "friends" who let her take the fall for crime they committed, Azami does not let people get emotionally close to her. Thankfully [[PositiveFriendInfluence Ganta]] helps her grow out of this mindset.
* NiceGirl: What she eventually becomes thanks to her CharacterDevelopment, as she is hardly ever rude and even opens up easier.
%%* OffWithHerHead: [[spoiler:Courtesy of Hagire]].
%%* PoisonousPerson: [[spoiler:The 'Snake' Branch of Sin.]]
* TokenGoodTeammate: [[spoiler:She's the only Forgery to turn against Tamaki.]]

A timid looking Forgery who serves as Tamaki's abused servant. It's later revealed that he is actually the most powerful of the Forgeries.
----
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler: After he is killed by Ganta and Shiro, Azami and him give him a look of pity as they realize that in the end he was just another pawn of Tamaki.]]
* CombatSadomasochist: [[spoiler:He enjoys both causing harm to others as well as having harm caused to himself.]]
* TokenGoodTeammate: Unlike the other Forgeries he is rather kind to Ganta. [[spoiler: Subverted later on when it was reveled to be an act.]]

* ArchEnemy: [[spoiler:To Senji, as he was the one who killed Senji's police squad including his mentor Domon.]]
* TheBrute: He is the most physically strong of the Forgeries and he relies mostly on pure strength when fighting, since his Branch of Sin only increases his muscle mass by injecting Dopamine into his blood stream.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: After being left battered and unconscious by Minatsuki and "Chaplin", she is never seen or mentioned again. She isn't even seen boarding a bus leaving the prison like other characters whose fates were left ambiguous.

Ganta's mother and a scientist. Deceased.
----
Tropes associated with Sorae:
* ChekhovsGun: She developed the crystal that would serve as the source of Ganta's powers before she died. [[{{Foreshadowing}} It protected her from Shiro's energy during the Earthquake]].
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: She sends Ganta away to be raised by someone else, before offering Shiro as his replacement.
* DidntSeeThatComing: It never occurred to her that she might actually care about her child until it was too late.
* DeliverUsFromEvil: Originally intended to bear Ganta to raise him as an experimental subject for her lab research. Fortunately for Ganta, maternal instinct made her change her mind.
* {{Foil}}: The MotherlyScientist to Hagire's MadScientist. She ironically starts off as his DistaffCounterpart before becoming a mother.
* ForScience: A philosophy she eventually came to regret.
* GuineaPigFamily: Her original plan for Ganta until her maternal instincts kicked in.
* HeelRealization[=/=]MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Hagire walking into her hospital ecstatically shrieking about dissecting her newborn son is what finally drives home just how bad an idea her research really is.
%%* ItsAllMyFault: Damn right, it is.
* MamaBear: She's not just protective over Ganta, but Shiro as well.
* MercyKill: Played with. Putting aside that Shiro is nearly indestructible, she couldn't bring herself to end Shiro's life, no matter how much she thought she should or [[DeathSeeker how much Shiro wished she would]] because [[ForScience she finds Shiro fascinating.]] She does however discover and create things that can destroy Shiro (namely the Red Crystal and Ganta).
%%* MissingMom: Because she's dead.
* MotherlyScientist: When she was alive. Specifically this to Shiro while growing up, being one of the only people to treat her like both a little girl and a person. Sorae also seemed to be the only scientist that Shiro sort of liked.
* MotherlySidePlait: She grew one after giving birth to Ganta as she started to act less like a MadScientist and more like a human being.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's already been dead for years before the series even begins.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Sorae seals Shiro to keep others safe from her and then shoots herself in the head when Hagire tries to force her to undo the process.
%%* SelfFulfillingProphecy: The Woodpecker song, which she wrote.
* ShootTheDog: She offers Shiro as Ganta's substitute and later, seals Shiro.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Most of the manga is Sorae's fault. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone And she KNOWS it.]]

The one who killed Ganta's classmates and the origin of the Branches of Sin. Also the other side of Shiro's split personality, created through brutal experiments on Shiro as a child, her unlocked power causing the Tokyo earthquake.
----
* AxCrazy: Delights in butchering people just for shits and giggles. The Wretched Egg has wracked up a higher body count than the entire rest of the cast combined.
* BadassBoast:
-->'''Wretched Egg''': "[[MisanthropeSupreme I hate everything.]] [[OmnicidalManiac Kill everything.]] [[PersonOfMassDestruction Ruin everything.]] [[AxCrazy I inflict pain on everything]]."
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: The absolute nightmare Shiro went through at Hagire's hands broke her brain, leading to The Wretched Egg side of her being created.
* BigBadFriend: In the sense that she's the alter ego of Shiro, Ganta's closest friend.
* BloodKnight: Played with. She makes it seem like this was her sole motivation for her partnership with Hagire, stating that he can fully satisfy her bloodlust and desire for chaos and destruction, despite the fact that Hagire is one of the two main reasons she suffered so much in her childhood. In reality, she literally needed him, because he was her best shot at shutting down the Mother Goose System. Hagire's probably aware of this, but he doesn't care. [[SexIsViolence Fighting her is his life's joy.]]
* BlowYouAway: Her Branch of Sin lets her create tornadoes from blood with winds strong enough to tear human beings limb from limb.
%%* BrokenBird: Biggest one in the series by a mile.
* CoolMask: At least until adopting the purple bodysuit, though she later starts wearing the mask again with it, sans helmet.
* CrossdressingVoices: [[SamusIsAGirl Subverted in this case.]] While she's referred to as The Red ''Man'', her voice actors in both the original Japanese and English dub are female.
* DeathSeeker: Her 'wish' is to die, and she wants Ganta to be the one to do it.
* DontYouDarePityMe: She nearly takes Ganta's head off with an intentional miss of her Branch of Sin the moment Ganta starts saying everything bad that happened to them was his fault.
* TheDreaded: ''The'' reason there is a MassOhCrap every time the Mother Goose System stops working in Deadman Wonderland. Basically, when the lullaby stops, people die.
* {{Expy}}: In-universe example. Wretched Egg in her Red Man attire is intentionally dressed up as darker version of the InUniverse superhero [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110604202432/deadmanwonderland/images/1/10/Aceman2.png Aceman]].
* FanDisservice: She's depicted naked more than once in the Return to DW arc, though the context under which it happens takes a lot away from the scenes.
* FilleFatale: She shows shades of this towards Hagire in Chapter 43. The fact that she tolerated being touched by him as much as she did, while ''naked'', says a lot, though it's seriously doubtful she's doing anything beyond simply using what she knows Hagire wants in exchange for shutting down the Mother Goose System.
%%* FinalBoss: After Hagire's final death.
* FromBadToWorse: After Hagire's death, Wretched Egg destroys the {{MacGuffin}} that powers the Mother Goose System, the one thing restraining her full power.
* GreaterScopeVillain: For the most part throughout the series. After killing all of Ganta's friends and being responsible for his incarceration in Deadman Wonderland, for the most part, The Wretched Egg plays very little direct antagonism in the story until Hagire is finally defeated and the Mother Goose System is destroyed, thus fully unleashing her power and letting her take front-stage as the main villain of the story for the finale, with Tamaki and Hagire serving as the primary antagonists for almost all of the story. Ultimately, however, everything bad that happens traces back to The Wretched Egg: the Great Tokyo Earthquake, the origin of all Deadmen, and ''literally everything'' Tamaki and Hagire do is to respectively kill her since Forgeries were specifically created to combat her, and unleash her full power respectively, thus making The Wretched Egg the ultimate root of everything bad that happens in the series, no matter how indirectly.
* GreenEyedMonster: She killed Ganta's classmates out of sheer jealousy.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: They tried. The result? [[TheTokyoFireball The Great Tokyo Earthquake]].
* InSeriesNickname: Ganta refers to The Wretched Egg as the 'Red Man,' and Shiro refers to them as 'Aceman.' This is because The Wretched Egg side of her first manifested when Shiro cried out for Aceman to save her while being tortured.
* IronicEcho: The very first words the Red Man ever says to Ganta are repeated again in Chapter 42, albeit under very different circumstances.
-->'''Wretched Egg''': "Welcome home, Woodpecker."
%%* KarmaHoudini: ...kind of, given the ending.
* MeaningfulName: She's the progenitor of the Branches of Sin, and the original Deadman. Hence the 'egg' part, since most Deadmen are named after [[AnimalMotif birds]].
* MercyKill: Her "wish" is for Ganta to do this to her, as his Branch of Sin is the only thing capable of killing her.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Inverted. She wants to die at Ganta's hands, and ''only'' at his hands.
* PetTheDog: A heartwarming, if curious, moment happens in Chapter 55. Even though she loathes sweets, The Wretched Egg consumes an unfinished pudding, as she knows that her Shiro personality loves sweets and misses Ganta.
* PowerFloats: She appears to be the only Deadman capable of flight without a Branch of Sin that involves wings.
* SamusIsAGirl: Ganta immediately assumes her identity to be male, even referring to them as "The Red Man", but she is eventually revealed to be Shiro.
* SlasherSmile: Comes with its own sound effect, '''''skrkt'''''.
* SuicidalCosmicTemperTantrum: The Great Tokyo Earthquake was a result of her trying to use her Branch of Sin to such a degree that it would destroy her own body faster than it could regenerate. Subverted because, obviously, it didn't work.
* SuperEmpowering: She is the source of the Nameless Worm that gives Deadmen their powers.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Subverted, Shiro is revealed to be fully conscious and in control during the atrocities The Wretched Egg commits.
** Debatable. In chapter 55, Shiro doesn't seem to remember Wretched Egg finishing off the pudding, so it's likely that near the end of the series, the two personalities merged back into one. There was also Wretched Egg's seeming contempt for Shiro, along with all of the visual metaphors of the inside of their mind, with Shiro and Wretched Egg swapping places in a bird cage.
* WalkingSpoiler: She is Shiro's alternate personality, as is also the progenitor of the Branches of Sin, as well as being responsible for causing the Great Tokyo Earthquake and killing Ganta's classmates.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Once you consider her backstory, she is most definitely this. Even Ganta seems to agree, according to Chapter 54. Their FerrisWheelDateMoment has Ganta apologizing profusely for not being there to save Shiro, and it ends with him promising to 'end her suffering.'
* WorthyOpponent: She seems to view Ganta as one. Most likely because of remembering just how much of a {{Determinator}} Ganta was as a child, and actually proving her wrong when she called him weak. Keeping in mind [[BrokenBird her insane cynicism borne of endless torture]], Ganta was probably the only spark of humanity that ever got through to her. Though it inspired fascination more so than hope. Although it inspired some hope, too since chapter 55 reveals that Ganta's unique Branch of Sin was actually designed by Sorae, and that it's the only Branch of Sin that is capable of killing her.
* {{Yandere}}: Her only motivation for butchering his entire classroom was sheer, unadulterated jealousy.
