TheProtagonist of the show, if you didn't figure that out from the name. Antisocial, intellectual, plainly dressed and [[DeadpanSnarker snarks like nobody's business]]. Surrounded by living caricatures and all kinds of idiocy and insanity which she has no patience for, Daria mainly copes by alternately trying to stop things from getting out of control, or just watching and commenting on the madness.

-> For information about her portrayal on ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButthead'', see that show's [[Characters/BeavisAndButtHead character sheet]]
----
* AllergicToLove: In "Ill" [[note]]The word "ill", as in, sick[[/note]], she gets a rash that turns out to be a stress reaction to being around Trent.
* AntiHero: Episodes make clear that she's not the most ideal role model and that even she doesn't necessarily see herself as one. Yet despite her apathy she still has a strong enough moral compass and standards to help others when people ask for it.
* ArtShift: Daria's design is very different from show she looked in ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButthead'' right down to having different glasses and a completely different outfit.
* AscendedExtra: She was a RecurringCharacter in ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButthead'' before getting her own show. WordOfGod says that [[{{Crossover}} Beavis and Butthead would have appeared on]] ''Daria'' if the show wasn't a success.
* BeautifulAllAlong: Daria is very pretty but she does hide her looks under an outfit that shows she doesn't want to show off. Happens a few different times.
** In "Quinn the Brain", she purposely dresses like how Quinn usually dresses to convince Quinn to dump her intellectual act and shows that she can be coquettish and reveals her hidden figure.
** "Through a Lens Darkly" had various people react very positively to her appearance without glasses.
* BigSisterBully: To Quinn. Both sisters like to antagonize each other, but Daria is more open about it and likes to embarrass Quinn in front of other students.
* BigSisterInstinct: Despite Daria and Quinn constantly being at each other's throats, there are lines even she won't cross. In "This Year's Model", when the modeling agents push the students into sexually provocative situations that Quinn is visibly uncomfortable with, Daria anonymously gets the whole thing shut down and publicly humiliates Ms. Li for allowing it.
* BlindWithoutEm: Her vision is very poor, as shown in "Through a Lens Darkly".
-->"I can't take off my glasses. I need them to see scam artists."
* BookSmart: Despite being seemingly apathetic, Daria's very good academically. Mr [=DeMartino=] - who is so used to teaching slackers and morons - was openly leery of her at first before realizing she really is as bright as she lets on.
* BootsOfToughness: Those combat boots fit her unforgiving personality very well.
* BorrowedCatchphrase: Invoked:
-->"Damn it, it's ''my'' turn to say damn it!"
* BrainyBrunette: An intelligent girl with long brown hair (especially in ''The Misery Chick'' when the palette is washed out and turns her usual chestnut to auburn color to light brown).
* BrilliantButLazy: She easily gets good grades but is too apathetic to do any of the other activities people try to rope her into (until she is either forced or bribed, anyway).
* BrokenAce: Daria's insightful and actually respected by a fair amount of people, but she knows she's not the ideal role model. "Boxing Daria" also shows that she's been carrying some repressed childhood memories that cause her to have a minor breakdown.
* BrutalHonesty: Honest to a fault, though thankfully for others they can't comprehend her brand of sarcasm. People who can, such as Jane or Mr. [=DeMartino=], think it's ActuallyPrettyFunny.
* BurgerFool: In one episode, she worked at a mall stand called "It's A Nutty Nutty World". The uniform included a ridiculous hat meant to look like a squirrel's head, and a long rhyming greeting that the boss wanted to make mandatory to say when customers came up. And since the manager was openly sexist, Daria's competence naturally got overlooked while Kevin was favoured in spite of his blatant stupidity.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Has done this a few times to Jake and Helen.
** In "Quinn the Brain," she's quick to acknowledge the double standard of Jake giving Quinn a monetary reward for her single good grade, while Daria has consistently gotten excellent grades but has never been rewarded for any of them. Even Helen was aware that this was unfair.
** In "Write Where It Hurts" she doesn't hesitate to skewer Helen when, after being forced to tell Helen what's wrong in-between calls to her boss, Helen starts comparing Daria's difficulty with a writing assignment to Quinn's "challenges" which are more or less coordinating shoe color with her dates' eyes.
--->'''Daria:''' Quinn will never have this kind of challenge. It involves ''thinking''. You make me tell you what's wrong in-between calls, and then you bring up Quinn? Don't you know me at all?
** She gets annoyed at Helen and Jake for seemingly sucking up to Tom's parents in "Is It Fall Yet" and basically accuses them of openly groveling.
* TheCameo: She appeared in Beavis and Butt-Head: Do America and Beavis and Butt-Head: Do the Universe. In Do America, the ATF storm into the Highland High School, she and the other students run and they were eventually got cavity search. In Do the Universe, she was at Beavis and Butt-Head's trial. She was very upset and angry that Beavis and Butt-Head got off scot free.
* CaptivityHarmonica: In one episode when she was grounded. Her parents lifted the grounding just so that they didn't have to hear it anymore.
-->"Dad, these tired bones may be locked behind prison walls, but when I play this rusty old harp, my soul flies free as a bird."
* CelibateHero: While Daria is attracted to boys, she doesn't seem to have any interest in sex. When rumours spread that she and Tom have done it, Daria decides to take the plunge, but treats the whole concept like a chore rather than a real connection. [[spoiler: Ultimately Daria and Tom never sleep together.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Daria stays deadpan and sarcastic but she does improve by the series finale. Her relationships with her family has improved, she has been able to show emotional maturity whether its between her and Jane or how she [[spoiler: handles her breakup and future friendship with Tom]], and she becomes much more well-adjusted by series finale. Comes to learn that being a self-isolating "misery chick" isn't ''always'' the best way to conduct herself.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** In ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButthead'', Daria was originally a TeachersPet who had her self-esteem ruined by Beavis and Butt-head's constant taunting.
** Once Tom enters the picture, Daria's vulnerable side is given more emphasis. She's conflicted about having less time with Jane, feels pressured to play a certain role in Tom's life and discussions over things like sex and college show that Daria's out of her element. The series makes a point of showing that even if Daria and Tom don't act like an ideal couple, there's nothing inherently wrong with either of them.
* ChildHater: Invoked but then we see Daria does have the capacity to get along with children, such as the Gupty kids and Link.
* TheComicallySerious: Daria has just about enough dry humor to provide some laughs.
* CreepyMonotone: Her normal voice intonation is very flat which some people find off-putting and making her sound deadpan even when she's ''not'' trying. This is specifically brought up in contrast to Brittany's bubbly, squeaky voice in "The Old and the Beautiful", where they get volunteered by Ms. Li to read to seniors in a nursing home.
* DaddysGirl: In a {{downplayed|Trope}} way. She clearly loves Jake and admits to being very shaken after his heart attack forced her to confront his mortality for the first time. However, she has a hard time expressing that love and admiration to him, and privately wishes she could be more open and tell him he's her hero.
** Her portrayal of Jake at the end of "Write Where it Hurts" is downright sweet.
** In "One J at a Time", Daria is worried about Tom going to her house for dinner and meeting her parents. Jane thinks she's worried Jake will embarrass her with his neurosis, but Daria is actually worried about Tom making fun of him (though, as Jane points out, that's not something Tom would actually do).
** [[MakesSenseInContext "If that rotten fish has restored communication between us, Father, then I say hooray for smelly old rot"]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Her dry wit and sarcasm are her defining traits. Her main role is snarking at the antics of the other students around her.
* DisappointingOlderSibling: She is seen this way by her shallow younger sister Quinn, mostly because Daria is plainly dressed and unpopular. For most of the show, Quinn claims she is an only child and denies the fact that she and Daria are sisters.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** For as willingly apathetic as she is when dealing with her insufferable classmates, Daria frequently steps forward to help them if she believes they're being exploited or objectified by people in a position of power, such as Cloud and Romonica in "This Year's Model" (which also had her little sister involved), Val in "The Lost Girls," or Ms. Li and the Ultra Cola corporation in "Fizz Ed."
** Daria insults the intelligence and personalities of people like Brittany, Kevin, and the Fashion Club on a regular basis due to how obnoxiously shallow and self-centered they can be, but she's absolutely appalled by the abusive attitude of JerkJock Tommy Sherman and tries to cut him down after seeing him proposition and insult people for an entire day. Especially considering because she witnessed Tommy sexually harassing Brittany, mocking Kevin to his face even after Kevin admitted he was Tommy's biggest fan, and making racist jokes against Mack.
** She'd never sincerely wish for someone to die, but in Tommy Sherman's case she can show enough sympathy to admit it's messed up that he died but openly acknowledges his death doesn't invalidate what a horrible person he was. She won't, however, make fun of him ''for'' dying despite what Jane initially believed.
** "Lucky Strike" has her immediately get the phone and give it to Helen as soon as Quinn obliviously reports that her substitute sexually harassed Tiffany by stroking her hair in class. The next day when she's dragged into Ms. Li's office, Daria very quickly calls the principal out on having hired a pedophile and the fact that Li is angry about firing him. That same episode later shows that even if she believes Quinn's classmates have the cranial capacity of a cracked sink, she's still going to try and teach them and grade them as best as she can and as best as they deserve.
** "Boxing Daria" may be the biggest demonstration of Daria's standards when she's forced to look back on her childhood and fears she may have been a burden to her parents. While Daria's got no issue snarking at people for being idiots, the thought of being intentionally nasty towards Helen and Jake and thinking they didn't deserve it, coupled with the thought that "being herself" caused them stress they also didn't deserve, depresses her to no end.
* {{Foil}}: To several characters:
** To Quinn, as both of them are attractive and intelligent, but Daria downplays her looks and focuses on her intellectual pursuits, as opposed to Quinn who does the exact opposite. Also extends to their wardrobes, with Daria wearing a dark gereen jacket while Quinn wears bright pink shirts.
** To Jane, who is an intellectual outcast but is much more willing to interact and show more emotion than Daria. While Daria is a writer, Jane is a conceptual artist. It also extends to their home life as well: Daria lives in a stable home with both parents in the picture, yet has a strained relationship with her sister, while Jane's parents are absent but is extremely close with her brother Trent.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The calm and intellectual Responsible to Quinn's shallow and bratty Foolish.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic. She is introverted, analytical, organized, elegant, practical, ethical to a deep fault, sensitive, moody, critical (of others and herself), and cynical.
* FriendToAllChildren: Daria's shown to have a surprising soft spot for kids because she knows how to talk to them on an equal level instead of patronizing them like most adults would do. The Gupty kids are openly fond of her and she manages to empathize with Link. "Fair Enough" also shows that she and Jane are able to keep a captive audience of children by entertaining them with all sorts of gross knowledge about the Middle Ages. All in all, as a teenager Daria ironically has a better capability to interact with kids than when she ''was'' a kid.
* GenreBlindness: Although she would joke about her plans after high school several times, it was obvious she planned on attending college. However, despite being advised several times that most colleges look for extracurricular activities in addition to grades, Daria fought tooth and nail to avoid extracurriculars whenever she could. Her introvertedness ends up taking its toll on her when she's interviewed for a spot in Bromwell and struggles to piece together a compelling response to the stream of questions.
* GirlsLikeMusicians: The mostly stoic Daria used to have a crush on Trent, the lead guitarist of an alternative band with a sort of rebel appeal. Even if the band is pretty bad and Trent is a flaky slacker, Daria remains smitten with him for a few years.
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: She's the Smart to Quinn's beautiful, though after witnessing their mother's variation of the trope with her sisters made them more willing to work this out.
* HairColorDissonance: Her hair appears to be either brown or auburn.
* HatesEveryoneEqually: By her own admission, she has "low esteem for everyone else".
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Jane Lane. She's her only friend, they have a lot in common, and spend much time together at school.
* HiddenBuxom: [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daria_is_quinn_3913.jpg Seems to be this trope in "Quinn the Brain"]] where she showcases a developed (not as much as Brittany or her own mother) bosom and curves on her slender figure all in contrast to her normally flat and straight appearance in her clothing. That being said, Daria's body type is stated to be unconventional, as the tailor who fitted her for a bridesmaid's dress noted.
* HiddenDepths: Later seasons show us a much more vulnerable, insecure Daria, who is being forced to reconcile her own personality with all the trials and tribulations of growing up. We (and Daria herself) learn she is not immune to the problems normal teens face (such as first love, concern for one's appearance, and loneliness), but because of her tendency to self-isolate and distance herself from "shallow" high school things, she's completely unprepared to face these problems once they arise.
* IceQueen: Well known for her dispassionate, aloof persona as well as her frostbitten wit.
* InformedLoner: She considers herself a loner and prefers to distance herself from the school social circle, but most of her fellow students seem to be fine speaking with her. It's possible that this is ''because'' she's (normally) disassociated with the high school drama and is 'safe' for just about anyone to talk to. Considering when she is in the hospital in, "Ill," she is visited by the School President, the Captain of the school football team, the Quarterback and the Head Cheerleader of their free will. Any outside observer would surely conclude that Daria is among the elites of that school.
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: PlayedForDrama from season three to the end, in which Daria's attitude is shown as something not worthy of being emulated.
* ItsAllMyFault: "Boxing Daria" shows Daria remembering a childhood incident where her parents had a big fight regarding her behavior, and she starts to believe that she's been making their family miserable all these years just because she chose to "be herself" and they didn't deserve it. Jane, Jake and Helen need to explain to Daria that she hasn't been doing anything to her parents. Her parents explain that raising a child as astute and perceptive as Daria was never going to be easy, but she's never been a burden to them and they've never resented her for being the way she is.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** In spite of her cold nature and sarcasm, she has helped out other students if they ask, and has been shown to genuinely care about her family and friends.
** Daria frequently has some biting comment in store for the moronic, self-serving, and ignorant people she finds herself surrounded by, yet these are usually reserved for the ridiculousness around her and never for outright malice or cruelty. She's openly appalled by exploitive people like Dr. Shar, Val, Cloud and Romonica, and genuinely disgusted by Tommy Sherman's horrible attitude towards people who look up to him.
** While she loathes doing any kind of work that involves dealing with people, she's shown a knack for appealing to children such as the Gupty kids and Link.
* KnightInSourArmor: Possesses a code of honor and will do the right thing, even if the thought of interacting with others makes her nauseous.
* MisfitLabRat: Daria once imagines herself working at a gene-splicing lab in a possible future in which she was married (by common law) to Trent, who was still a failed musician. Daria, while neither a goth nor a punk herself, hangs out with a punk and has a general "alternative" aesthetic to her.
* MoralityPet:
** Daria seems to be this to some of the teachers at Lawndale High due to her intellect and sanity being a breath of fresh air in the quagmire of stupidity the school seems to be steeped in (with exceptions, of course).
** Played straight with Mr. [=DeMartino=], in a way, because she makes him "Want to kill himself a little less" than the rest of her classmates. He's also shown complimenting her work in class and congratulates her on winning an award during graduation.
** She's equally liked by Mr. O'Neill, Ms. Barch, Mrs. Bennett, and Ms. [=DeFoe=]. The faculty members who hate Daria (Mrs. Manson, Ms. Morris, and Ms. Li) are the ones who're all openly corrupt.
* NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead: Played with. "The Misery Chick" shows she's perfectly willing to keep talking about what a horrid person Tommy Sherman was, as she doesn't believe it's right to pretend he was a shining paragon of virtue just because he died. That said, Daria doesn't go any further than stating the obvious facts about his character, nor does she try to convince others that Tommy Sherman was bad news if they didn't already know it beforehand. She, surprisingly, is rather tactful when Kevin approaches her about the situation and tries to respect his feelings.
* NewTransferStudent: The show starts when she and Quinn move to Lawndale. Daria enrolls in Lawndale High in her senior year, and has to be told about Lawndale High's history.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Coming to terms with this is central to her later character development. This is more evident in the episode "Through a Lens Darkly" where, after her eyes failed to take contact lenses, she goes around with her glasses just because people responded positively to her appearance without them and she worries if she's as shallow as her peers.
* ObliviousToLove: Platonically speaking. There are a few subtle (Note: VERY subtle) hints that Quinn cares about Daria more than she lets on, which usually go unnoticed by her. She is also well liked by two popular girls in her class, Brittany and Jodie. This is a main theme in the series' final episode "Boxing Daria" in which her teachers try to show her she's appreciated before she leaves for college.
* ObfuscatingInsanity: Often says random, insane things to strangers when she wants them to leave her alone, made hilarious by the fact that she says them in the exact same tone of voice as everything else.
* OnlySaneWoman: She is one of the few teenagers that doesn't get overwhelmed by clique drama or do anything stupid. As a matter of fact, "Psycho Therapy" had her receive confirmation from a licensed psychiatrist that she is in fact the most well adjusted member of her family. After said psychiatrist spent less than five minutes with her ''and'' Quinn.
-->'''Jean-Michel''': I must say, Daria, I was worried you might have some deep seated issues. But you're remarkably well-adjusted (''gesturing to Quinn'') considering.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** If Daria drops her poker face for even a second, it's usually important.
** After four seasons of having to threaten or bribe Daria to even vaguely listen to her suggestions, Helen realizes that things are bad when Daria shows up at her office for advice.
* PerpetualFrowner: Rarely smiles, although she has more of a stoic "Resting Bitch Face" as opposed to frowning as her default setting.
* PrinciplesZealot: In "Through a Lens Darkly," after a school day of bumping into things because she decided not to wear her glasses in a moment of vanity after she couldn't put on her contacts she was trying out, Daria eventually runs into the girls' bathroom in shame for being a hypocrite. It takes the combined persuasion of Jane, Jodie and Brittany to let Daria know that she has no need to be a martyr to principle on such a minor thing as a teenage girl.
* RedheadInGreen: She is auburn-haired (reddish-brown) and constantly wears green in-universe, even in the 1950s story in "Mart of Darkness".
* SheCleansUpNicely: Daria is just as pretty as Quinn, and can show off, but only when she has to, since it goes against her own principles, as seen in "Quinn the Brain".
* TheSnarkKnight: Initially, this trope was [[TropeNamer actually called]] "The Daria". Formerly a minor character on Beavis and Butt-Head, her derisive comments on the stupidity of the title characters made her popular enough with the fans' own sense of teenage world-weariness that she got her own show.
* SoapboxSadie:
** A minor example. She sticks to her beliefs and lets people know about them, but she rarely takes a direct stand against issues unless they affect her or her friends, or if she feels people will get hurt. It became a plot point "Partner's Complaint" however, when she fought over Jodie about how she used her father's good name to get a bank loan for their project. At the end, Daria learns that she stands up for what she believes in, while Jodie is more pragmatic about her views, and neither of them are wrong.
** An earlier example occurs in "Arts 'N Crass." Daria makes it clear she wasn't interested in the poster contest and the only reason she came up with her poem about eating disorders is because she wanted to create something that would actually make the audience think. She does however fight for the validity of the message she created with Jane, especially after Mr. O'Neill's proposed alteration is saccharine garbage about good nutrition. Daria eventually resorts to extremes when Ms. Li intended to enter the poster with the bastardized poem under hers and Jane's names without their consent, destroying it the night of the contest.
* StepfordSnarker: The mask starts to fall when around someone she has a crush on.
-->'''Helen''': Daria, the easiest thing in the world for you is being honest about what you observe.\
'''Daria''': And...\
'''Helen''': What's hard for you is being honest about your wishes. About the way you think things should be, not the way they are. You gloss over it with a cynical joke and nobody finds out what you really believe in.
-->'''Daria''': Aha! So my evil plan is working.
* TheStoic: Always has the same CreepyMonotone and rarely shows emotions.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Going ''waaay'' heavy on the "ice" side. She mostly seems a cold EmotionlessGirl but has a hidden warm side that shows around her close ones, mainly Jane.
* SurroundedByIdiots: The intro song has the repeated lyric, "You're standing on my neck," alluding to the title character feeling this way about her peers; their presence is so smothering that she can't function normally.
* TeenGenius: Reads thick Russian novels regularly and she's not even 20.
* TookALevelInKindness: By the end of the series, her relationship with Quinn has softened considerably once she starts to realize Quinn's not as bad a person as she used to believe. It helps that Quinn stops pretending they're not sisters, and especially after the two work together to dismantle Helen's feud with their aunts.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Pizza. It also doubles as her ComfortFood.
* TranquilFury: Daria never raises her voice unless she needs to yell to be heard. But when she gets angry you can practically ''feel'' her voice getting sharper.
* TheTrickster: Often to get her own way or to fool around with someone, this is even more evident in the first episode where she convinces her family to go to Pizza Forest and to an Alien Convention to toy with them.
* TheUnfavourite: Early episodes sort of play Daria as this to Quinn; however, as the series goes on the dynamic changes a bit, with their parents not telling Daria to be like Quinn so much as they just want Daria to expand her horizons in general.
* UnkemptBeauty:
** Aside from basic hair care, she uses no cosmetics during the early series (although she can be seen with different coloring on her lips once she starts dating Tom, implying that she starts wearing either lipstick or lip-gloss), her design is of a reasonably attractive young woman.
** ''Quinn The Brain'' shows that she is aware that she could easily make herself conventionally attractive if she chose, but instead eschews makeup and wears frumpy clothes to ensure she is recognized for her intellect, not her body.
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist: Justified. She is incredibly rude to most people but the other characters in the series are exaggerated stereotypes of annoying things found in high school and suburban America.
* VocalEvolution: Tracy's voice for Daria took on a much more nasally, flat tone after "Is It Fall Yet?", which is rather odd because she was quite capable of emoting in earlier seasons. It can come across as a {{Flanderization}} of the character all on its own.
* WhenSheSmiles: When you did something right or smart, [[https://zbsimpsonwriter.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/ep208.png it's one of the sincerest compliments she'll give you.]]

Daria's younger sister (by a year), though she initially denied that she and Daria were sisters. Quinn is, quite deliberately, Daria's complete and total opposite. She's the vice president of the [[GirlPosse Fashion Club]] and prides herself on being shallow, vain and fashionable.
----
* NinetiesHair: Has the shiny, bouncy blown out and straight tresses of the era.
* AllTakeAndNoGive: Quinn's idea of how a relationship between a pretty girl like her and a boy should be goes like this: the boy is supposed to take her wherever she wants to go, pay for anything she wants and worship the ground she walks on, and in return she will be pretty enough for him to appreciate.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: She acts air-headed and nags Daria about her "uncute" activities. Even about her eating habits.
* AttentionWhore: She loves the constant attention and panics when no one is paying any heed to her. Shows up prominently when she thinks that Jake and Helen, her and Daria's parents, are going to have another baby and dreads competing for attention from a baby.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: To Daria in later episodes. Being opposites, they both are resentful of each other for most of the show, but they have their bonding moments in the final season, with Quinn finally admitting Daria is her sister.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: Is the proud mother of triplet boys twenty years after the show.]]
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: Her season 1-3 shirt shows off quite a bit of her midriff. Her shirt from season 4 on shows less of it.
* BetaBitch: While beautiful, haughty, popular, and immensely [[HeadTurningBeauty sought after]], she's only the ''Vice'' President of the Fashion Club, and defers to Sandi if pressed. Regardless, Quinn's force of personality makes their dynamic more one of duelling [[AlphaBitch Alpha Bitches]].
* BigLittleSister: A mild example. Despite being the younger sister, Quinn's slightly taller in height than Daria is.
* BlatantLies: Quinn acting upset when her male suitors physically assault each other in their competition for her, generally with a smile on her face. Any of her attempts at distancing herself from Daria (usually calling Daria her cousin or the weird neighbor girl who hangs out with her), the most extreme being that Daria is "Our cabana girl's adopted cousin", although that one occurred in a dream Daria was having in ''Murder She Snored''.
* TheBore: Her long-winded rants about the Fashion Club and anything else going on in her life tend to either annoy or aggravate people, or put them to sleep.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Shops a lot and asks her parents for allowance frequently. She also whines her Mom's name.
* BrokenAce: Attractive, popular, and smarter than she lets on, Quinn's insecurity and fear of rejection by her peers fuel a shallow personality, a less than stellar academic performance, and a very toxic relationship with the rest of the Fashion Club, particularly Sandi. She believes fashion and shopping are all she's good at, and in the words of Daria, she's "afraid of looking inward and finding nothing." She starts to mature as the series goes on, and embraces her intelligence and starts setting proper boundaries in regards to Sandi's mistreatment.
* ButtMonkey: Often when dealing with [[WithFriendsLikeThese Sandi]], at the hands of [[BigSisterBully Daria]] and [[LaserGuidedKarma whenever her own schemes backfire.]]
* ButterflyOfDeathAndRebirth: Her shirt in Seasons 4 and 5 has a yellow butterfly, representing the death of the shallow, fashion-obsessed girl and subsequent rebirth to someone who blossoms and matures.
* CasualKink: She ''really'' likes it when boys fight over her.
* CharacterDevelopment: Particularly in her relationship with Daria, where the sisters try to understand one another a little more.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Constantly, given her sheltered and ditzy manner:
** One episode has Jake trying to inform her about the benefits of hard work by mentioning "The Ant and the Grasshopper", but her only response is "EWW! Bugs?!"
** Another time she had glanced at an episode of ''Sick, Sad World'' that Daria was watching where a woman had been nearly killed by her husband via running her down in a car and the disheveled-looking woman being interviewed and still defending him. Quinn's more concerned with why she would appear on TV looking like that than her circumstances.
** Jake gets this again when she whines about not being pretty enough:
--->'''Quinn:''' I hate my "inperfections"!\
'''Jake:''' That's ''"im''perfections", sweetie.\
'''Quinn:''' ''(whilst holding her hands over her nose)'' I knew it!\
'''Jake:''' [[OpenMouthInsertFoot Aw, hell!]]
* CuteButCacophonic: Very pretty, but has a high-pitched voice that sounds grating when she's frustrated.
* DaddysGirl: Takes Jake's heart attack very seriously and dabbles with medical research.
* DisownedSibling: For years, Quinn refused to publicly acknowledge that Daria was her sister, referring to her as her "cousin", "au pair", and "foreign exchange student". She is willing to help Daria in "Ill", saying that skin-care crises transcend interpersonal conflicts. This finally changes in "Lucky Strike", when Quinn openly acknowledges that Daria is her sister. And "Aunt Nauseam" sees Quinn actively trying to mend their sibling bond after seeing the nightmarish relationship her own mother has with her sisters. Quinn even asks Daria if they'll end up like their mother and aunts.
--> '''Quinn:''' Daria? You don't think we'll end up having the same fight over and over again, for the rest of our lives, the way mom and Aunt Rita do, do you?
--> '''Daria:''' ''(dryly)'' No. We'll use weapons.
--> '''Quinn:''' ''(visibly distraught)'' Don't say that!
--> '''Daria:''' I'll make you a deal. The only weapon I'll use against you will be my winning personality, and the only weapon you'll use against me will be your merciless silent treatment.
--> '''Quinn:''' Silent treatment? I never-- ha. Deal.
* DudeMagnet: She is dating a different guy almost every episode, although she mostly limits herself to rotating between the same three guys, who are utterly smitten with her. Her DudeMagnet ability is taken to almost goddess levels easily winning over most adult men and little boys without trying. She's been declared Keg Queen at her parents' alma mater early in her first year at Lawndale and with some help from Daria, she charms a group of cowboys and rednecks into giving the girls enough money to bail their friends.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** In "This Year's Model", despite wanting to become a fashion model, she gets nervous over the idea of running her hands over a boy's naked chest.
** In "Is it College Yet?", Quinn's new friend, Lindy, has a drinking problem, and when her screwdriver is discovered by their boss and knowing full well getting caught will get you fired, Lindy begs Quinn not to tell it's hers and to lie that it's one of the other workers. Quinn can't bring herself to lie like that because she doesn't want someone else taking that big of a fall.
* TheFashionista: Petite, thin, and always decked out in the latest teen trends and willing to give fashion advice.
* {{Foil}}: Daria's primary opposite in the series; a person who tends to pride herself on her appearance more than her intelligence (which she tries to hide), and visibly popular yet unable to form genuine relationships.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The bratty and shallow Foolish to Daria's calm and intellectual Responsible.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine. She's extroverted socially, an emotional teen girl, popular, cheerful, energetic, talkative, retains an ample about of passion and compassion for others and for her interests, fun, friendly, forgiving (maybe a bit much regarding Sandi), undisciplined, gullible, scatterbrained (one episode had her mix up dates with the boys she's dating and her babysitting commitments), shallow, self-absorbed, and frivolous.
* TheGadfly: She likes manipulating boys into fighting amongst each other for giggles. The fights are bad enough to see all those involved knocked out.
* GenderBlenderName: Quinn is a unisex name but it's often more used as a boy's name.
* GirlyGirl: A popular pretty girl who is into fashion, boys and shopping.
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: Played straight to an extent in the first few seasons. But after seeing how their mom and maternal aunts always fight with each other, it made Quinn realize that might end up happening to her and Daria (and really seemed to disturb her). After that, Quinn started making an effort to get along with Daria better.
* HatesBeingTouched: She likes going out on dates with guys, but she doesn't like the idea of being intimate with anyone, reacting with disgust whenever a guy wants to get close to her. In the school dance, she has two guys as her dates, but when it comes to the slow dance, she flat out refuses to dance between them.
* HeelRealization: Receives an easy to miss one in "The Lost Girls." Quinn is visibly saddened by Daria's deconstruction of the concept of "Edgy," because it makes Quinn realize everything she enjoys and everything that makes her popular makes her part of the same faceless teen crowd being manipulated and exploited by corporate America. Considering Quinn had expressed how she felt being attractive and popular were the only things she was good at, it hurts even more because she knows just how little those really mean in the grander scheme of things. One might argue this was one of the prods Quinn needed to start reexamining her life and begin expressing her intellect a bit more.
* HeadTurningBeauty: Gets this reaction from high school boys (who'd fight over her) and even from bratty preteen boys. Just her presence is enough to get boys' attention.
* HiddenDepths: A ''lot'' smarter and deeper than she seems at first. She could probably be as smart as Daria if she simply put forth the effort--likewise, Daria could be as attractive as Quinn if she cared more about her appearance. She acts dumb and shallow because that is what makes her popular, plus she seems to truly believe that being popular is the only thing she's good at, but by the final season she has begun to accept her hidden depths a bit more.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: As Quinn puts it, she clings to popularity and being fashionable because she doesn't think she's good at anything else. As Daria puts it, Quinn clings to superficiality because she's afraid of looking inside and seeing there really is nothing. She's forced to confront this in ''Is It Fall Yet?'' when David snaps at her that she's only popular for her looks and has nothing to offer anyone, meaning Quinn's coming close to making sure she really is as empty inside as she fears.
* HypocriticalHumor: She's afraid to be associated with Daria because she thinks Daria's interests and studying makes her weird, but Quinn never considers the idea that her borderline obsessions with the most minute, pedantic details on clothing and make-up make ''her'' seem weird as well. Although Quinn can actually get away with it to a degree because the guys in Lawndale only care about how hot she is.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: What she confessed to Daria at one point, she feels that being outgoing, flirty, and pretty are all she's good at.
* InformedAttractiveness: Her attractiveness is mentioned frequently throughout the series, and even the other highly popular girls of the Fashion Club can be jealous of the attention she gets.
* InformedAttribute: Is meant to be TheFashionista but [[LimitedWardrobe wears the same thing everyday.]]
* InLoveWithLove: In one episode, Quinn is upset that Daria might be seen as more mature than her because Daria has a steady boyfriend, so Quinn spends most of the episode frantically trying to get one for herself--in the end, Helen tells Quinn that she should get a boyfriend (steady or not) because she likes the boy she's going out with and not just for the sake being in a relationship.
* ItRunsInTheFamily:
** The musical episode shows how Quinn and Helen are actually much more similar than they appear at first. Whether with fashion or with work, they both share a fiery unhealthy obsession with being the best.
** Deconstructed in "Aunt Nauseem," when she sees how unhealthy Helen's relationship with Rita and Amy is, and becomes distraught knowing her relationship with Daria isn't much better. She actively works towards being kinder to Daria because she doesn't want to spend her adult life being at Daria's throat, and vice versa.
* ItsAllAboutMe: "Boxing Daria" provides a FreudianExcuse for this. Quinn loves to be the center of attention because when she and Daria were little, their parents were wrapped in Daria's issues at school. Though, Quinn seems to have ''always'' been like this and possibly inherits it from Jake.
* {{Jerkass}}: For most of the show, she's vain, selfish, and doesn't want Daria as her sister for shallow reasons. Although she is more inclined to be a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, mainly in the final season.
* LovableAlphaBitch: In contrast to the nastier Alpha Bitch, Quinn's "[[WithFriendsLikeThese best friend]]," Sandi Griffin. They often come to odds because Sandi's [[SmugSnake consciously grasping at power]] whereas Quinn's more than content with [[ItsAllAboutme all the attention she gets]].
* {{Malaproper}}: Has a tendency to mangle words and phrases she's unfamiliar with.
-->"Look, when you fall off a horse, you have to get back up and shoot it."
* ManipulativeBitch: She enjoys using guys to get stuff and attention, and it's very clear she likes seeing guys fight over her.
* MotorMouth: She is almost always seen talking about her day, what her friends or other people at school are wearing, etc.
* NewTransferStudent: The show starts when she and Daria move to Lawndale. Quinn enrolls in Lawndale High as a Freshman and instantly becomes the most popular girl in the school, to Daria's annoyance.
* ObsessivelyOrganized: Quinn takes being fashionable to a rather extreme level. She spends her time obsessing over such things as contrasting sock length, the type of material used to make shoe laces, and whether or not she can coordinate her eye shadow with the color of her date's car. She even plans ahead on who she'll be dating depending on what season it is and whether or not their family owns a boat (for summer) or a ski house (for winter).
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She hides her intelligence to maintain her popularity, though she breaks out of it by the final season, accepting that she can be pretty ''and'' smart.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: In "Lane Miserables". Quin sees Daria ''in her room'' looking out the window at Trent going out with Monique. Rather than mock her or demand she leave, Quin recognises that Daria has a crush on Trent, reassures her that he's not "off limits" and to imagine a future with Trent. This is rather out of character for this point in the show - she'd later showcase more AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther moments.
* PetTheDog:
** It wasn't entirely altruistic, but she helps Sandi lose weight because Sandi got a bit chubby after breaking her leg. In the final season, Quinn proudly declares that Daria is her sister so it was right that she kept taking Daria's side when she was the class sub, and in another episode, she retrieves the box that Daria was taking shelter in and places it in her room - showing that she understands what her sister was going through.
** In ''Is it College Yet?'', she befriends an older girl with ''serious'' issues and is truly concerned about her sake.
* PhoneaholicTeenager: As part of her "attractive and popular" angle, she was often tying up the house phone line to talk to boys or the Fashion Club.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Her shirt, and several of the other outfits she wears. Even when she wore black, in Quinn The Brain, the clothing was outlined in pink.
* PrettyFreeloader: Basically the main reason she has a boy posse, the tie-in books reveal she has dated boys because they possess a yacht and her babysitting client chart highlights details like the decor of her clients' homes and even how many snacks and amenities they provide (pools, hot tubs, television).
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Receives one from her tutor in ''Is It Fall Yet?'' He's blunt about the fact that Quinn's really only popular because of her looks, that she has nothing to offer beyond being shallow and pedantic and that she shouldn't bother going to college if she has no interest in actually learning anything. All this represents the fears Quinn actually has about herself and her sense of self-worth.
** She gets a second devastating one from the same tutor when she asks him out on a date. He tells her it won't work because they're from two completely different worlds. Despite how far she's improved, he notes that she's still shallow and even points out that her college of choice is just a party school. He does point out that she is improving and she is doing the right thing when she acknowledged she could be doing a lot better than her peers. Still, Quinn takes the backhanded compliment hard.
* ResortToPouting: "This Year's Model", Quinn pouts at the dinner table after Helen attempts to forbid her from participating in a modeling class. Daria notes that it's serious when Quinn doesn't get up to answer the phone. Zig-zagged as Quinn's pouting was only part of why Helen relents and allows Quinn to participate.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: Her Season 1-3 shirt is bright pink with a smiley face and exposes her midriff, showing off her focus on appearance and innocence. After Season 4, the pink is darker, the smiley face is now a butterfly and the shirt is much more modest, recognizing that she's more than a pretty face and the start of her CharacterDevelopment.
* SmarterThanYouLook: She's a lot smarter than she shows and takes credit for, Daria even tells her that she isn't one of "the stupid."
* StepfordSmiler: She admits that the only reason she acts shallow and self-obsessed with pedantic interests in fashion and popularity is because she doesn't think she's good at anything else. Daria observes that Quinn hides behind her shallowness because she's afraid there really ''is'' nothing else she has to offer.
* TheStarscream: To Sandi. In the earlier seasons Quinn was seen, especially in "The Daria Hunter" actively trying to take Sandi down, but as the show went on Quinn only reacted this way if Sandi provoked her.
* SymbolMotifClothing: Her Season 1-3 pink tee has a smiley face on it, reflecting her innocence, her love of fashion, and her focus on herself. Starting in Season 4, it becomes a butterfly, symbolizing the transformation into a better version of herself.
* TookALevelInKindness: Quinn starts off as a willfully shallow and obnoxious brat who would rather die than publicly admit Daria is her sister. By the end of the series Quinn shows she's capable of being a genuinely decent friend and sister and is no longer ashamed of her intellect, while still enjoying her interests in fashion and dating boys.
* {{Tritagonist}}: She is also another main character who gets plot points devoted to her.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: Very demanding with her dates and family members. This doesn't stop boys from trying to get a date from her.

Daria and Quinn's mother, a professional lawyer. Almost constantly on her phone and seemingly oblivious to life around her, but she's far more on the ball than she seems.
----
* NinetiesHair: Her PowerHair is a teased-out bob that doesn't look too dissimilar from then-First Lady Hillary Clinton.
* AdultsAreUseless: {{Averted|Trope}}. A lot of episodes show that Helen can be useful in a crisis involving her children (when she's not talking to her boss Eric on the phone). Beyond "Arts 'n Crass" a decent example of this comes from "Lucky Strike" when, the moment Quinn mentions her substitute teacher was being inappropriate with Tiffany (not that Quinn noticed) Helen snaps into attention, calls the school, and has the guy fired.
* AmoralAttorney: What we hear from her work life certainly qualifies her, and her firm, as such.
-->'''Helen (on phone):''' No! No, absolutely not. It's unethical, it's immoral, it may well be illegal, I'll have no part of it. [[ByNoIMeanYes Okay, I'll do it.]]
* BigGood: The closest thing the show has to one, especially in later seasons. She has a short fuse, she's quite a workaholic, and her law firm is apparently shady, but when it really counts she's there for her family and provides Daria with comfort and sage advice when she's in need of it, being one of the few characters besides Jane who can actually get past Daria's rough exterior and help her when she's really vulnerable.
* DeadpanSnarker: Something Daria inherited. Helen uses this when dealing with teachers, her kids, husband, job, and family.
* EducationMama: Helen has never had to worry about Daria's grades but she does a lot of pushing towards Daria taking up extracurricular activities that will look good on her college applications, either to the point of bribery or blackmail.
* FieryRedhead: Hot tempered, frustrated, and has hair that turn more [[http://media.tumblr.com/4f95aea79c29bf663fd3304fef7850c7/tumblr_inline_nfr3egwlo61qlr65v.jpg scar]][[http://s1048.photobucket.com/user/k42write/media/cookiesfey.png.html let]] as the show goes on.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric. She's extroverted socially and professionally, task-oriented, a natural leader, hard-working, strong-willed, practical, determined, passionate, confident, hot-tempered, bossy, and self-righteous.
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: Rita's her usual target, though Amy's not immune. Which is ironic because she grew up to have two daughters, one like each of her sisters.
* HelloAttorney: A very attractive-looking lawyer.
* HighPoweredCareerWoman: She is the quintessential high powered career woman: she's an extroverted, independent, strong-willed, practically-minded and [[HelloAttorney attractive attorney]], typically shown in a [[LadyInAPowerSuit skirt suit]], rocking PowerHair. She's one of the few adults shown to be fairly competent, but is not the strongest presence in her life due to her being a {{Workaholic}}, prioritizing [[FamilyVersusCareer work over family]] more often than not.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She frequently wonders when Jake is going to finally stop complaining about his childhood, when she has more than her share of family issues regarding her mother and sisters that she hasn't done anything about improving or ignoring.
* MamaBear:
** "Arts 'n Crass" shows that if you mess with her kids, you better have a good defense attorney to fight back against her. Jane later exploits this in one episode to get Daria out of a hated BurgerFool job when the latter fears being seen by Trent (who she had a crush on) and manages to convince Helen that the boss was sexist.
** In "Lucky Strike", Helen gets a substitute teacher fired when Quinn mentions that he was "paying too much attention" to Tiffany, correctly deducing that he was a {{ephebophile}}.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Her maiden name, Barksdale, comes from a Confederate general in UsefulNotes/TheAmericanCivilWar.
* NiceGirl: Respectful and caring person when she's not torqued up.
* OnlySaneWoman: Compared to Jake, though she's far from flawless herself. She's definitely smarter, but he's arguably more moral.
* ParentalSubstitute: Helen treated Trent like her own son while he was staying with the Morgendorffers, going so far as to ground him when he came in late from a date.
* ParentsAsPeople: Tries to be involved with her daughters but she's often clueless and busy with her work.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Despite how frequently it's discussed that Helen is an attorney, she's never shown attending any trials or being present in court. The most we do see is her in her office and handling paperwork at home when she's not discussing cases over the phone, but beyond that the show never presents her within a courtroom. It works a bit too well with the argument Jake makes on her stressing how she claims to be too busy to be there for him and the girls when she never does any real lawyering.
* PowerHair: Possesses a mid to late 90s version of this coiffure.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: Played with. Helen is a high-level attorney, but whenever her boss Eric is around she's forced to do a lot of ass-kissing to placate him in hopes of being promoted to a partner. It's subtly implied that Helen is worn out by his neediness and constant demands. WordOfGod states that after Helen gets made a partner by suing her firm for discrimination, Eric doesn't speak to her for a year. They call it the best year of Helen's life.
* PunchClockVillain: She's a responsible mother who tries to give her daughters a good moral upbringing, but see AmoralAttorney above. Unusually for this trope, almost all her screen time is spent "off the clock".
* TheUnfavorite: Has a bit of a complex about being this to her mother, although since we never see the two of them interact, it's unknown how bad it really was. Interestingly, which of her own daughters she prefers seems to shift as the series progresses. At first, she's more proud of Quinn's superior social skills and encourages Daria to be more like her, while later on she finds Quinn's deliberate airheadedness irksome and is more quick to praise Daria's intelligence.
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: Helen apparently started working hard at school so that she would get attention from her mother, which has blossomed into full-blown workaholism by adulthood.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: Very frustrated with Jake and isn't afraid to lampshade how ridiculous he's acting; he in turn isn't afraid to snark at her or voice his frustration; they make out soon.
* WhereDidWeGoWrong: PlayedWith. In "Write Where It Hurts", Helen thoughtlessly commented "when Quinn has a challenge" in regards to Daria's difficulty completing an extra assignment. Daria angrily cuts into Helen for having the nerve to compare Quinn's "challenges" which amount to coordinating her shoes with the color of her dates' eyes to Daria having difficulty completing a writing assignment. The next day Helen tries to legitimately apologize for her words and manages to have a decent discussion about what Daria should do. However, this trope is ultimately {{averted|Trope}} in the long run, as Helen and Jake both recognize that Daria is a smart, perceptive, and talented young woman, and her antisocial tendencies are just part of who she is.
* {{Workaholic}}: Works a lot and starts heading out for work at 5 in the morning.

The girls' neurotic, well-meaning, long-suffering father. Has trouble understanding his teenage kids and is usually caught up in his own misadventures. Has an ongoing war against squirrels.
----
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Helen (and Jane!) would sometimes use Jake's short attention span to head off his assorted rants. By the fifth season, he was starting to [[SoLastSeason get wise to this]].
* BreakingTheCycleOfBadParenting: The idea of becoming anything like his own father or treating his girls the way Mad Dog treated him horrifies Jake. While his neurotic personality still makes it difficult for him to be a father, he openly acknowledges that he never wants Daria and Quinn to feel the way he did as a child and has asked Daria if he's being a good dad. Daria recognizes her dad is trying and while she does snark at him, she assures him he's doing better than Mad Dog ever was.
* BumblingDad: Zigzagged. He tries not to let his screwed-up childhood and the neuroses born from it get in the way of being a father to Daria and Quinn. Sometimes it works; other times it doesn't.
* ButtMonkey: Things don't go easy for Jake.
* CallingTheOldManOut: Played with. Jake's father has long been dead before the start of the series, but by season 3 he has the opportunity to call out his mother for pretending that his dad was "a caring, decent soul." Even though the material in "The Daria Diaries" mentions that Jake doesn't blame Ruth for Mad Dog's abuse, he's not letting her act as though Mad Dog was a good person.
-->'''Ruth''': Your father never used to carry on like this.
-->'''Jake''': Of course not, expressing emotion requires ''a soul!''
* CharacterCatchphrase: "[[AtomicFBomb Damn it!]]"
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: According to what Daria tells the psychologist in "Psycho-Therapy", we can infer that at least some of this behavior is [[ObfuscatingStupidity an affectation]] to hide the fact that he's less ambitious and driven than Helen.
* DumbassHasAPoint: He very rarely manages to stumble upon a decent point despite his neurosis and anger issues.
** In "College Bored," he's clearly pleased that Daria was smart enough to ensure she got paid in cash for writing papers for college students.
** During "The Big House," he listens to Quinn dramatically exclaim she snuck out with a guy she's in love with and then gets enraged that Quinn can't remember the guy's name.
--->'''Jake''': YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HIS ''NAME'', AND YOU'RE "'''IN LOVE WITH HIM?!'''"
** In "Arts N' Crass," while trying to talk about the difference between macaroni and penne ala pesto, he manages to make a concise argument for supporting Daria and Jane's poster in favor of not judging people by their looks. Even Daria notices and is touched by the effort.
--->'''Jake''': If this poster is supposed to be propaganda promoting student life, it'd be very bad. But if it's supposed to be Daria's personal vision of student life, it's very good. See?
--->'''Daria''' (''happily surprised''): Thanks, Dad!
** "The Lost Girls" has him repeatedly voice confusion over the meaning of "Edgy." Given that Val's definition of the term was completely stupid, Jake's right to get pissed about it.
** He rightfully calls out his mother in "Jake of Hearts" for not being honest about his dad being a complete piece of shit.
** At the beginning of "Aunt Nauseem," Jake accurately deduces that Helen getting involved in Rita and Erin's affairs is a bad idea and tries to beg her not to do it. When that fails and Rita eventually shows up at their house, he spends the rest of the episode avoiding everyone.
** Finally, "Boxing Daria" shows that Jake understands that having a child as smart and perceptive as Daria wasn't going to be easy, but it's worth it specifically because she's so smart and perceptive.
* {{Flanderization}}: Jake started off a little clueless, but otherwise normal at the very beginning of the first season. By the end of the season, he became a crazy high-strung man-child who always ranted about his screwed-up childhood and remained that way for the rest of the series. On the one hand, it does provide a lot of hilarity, especially in episodes that are more dramatic. On the other hand, the Flanderization makes Jake look like [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Homer Simpson]] from the days when Homer was dumb, impulsive, and a bit of a jerk, but not a full-blown {{Jerkass}}, and, for a show like ''Daria'' that's trying to be realistic, it's not a good fit.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic. He's pretty passive, yielding, stubborn, dense, thoughtful regarding his daughters, compassionate, and doting on his daughters.
* HairTriggerTemper: It doesn't take much to get him ranting about his father being a heartless bastard or the hell that was military school.
* HiddenDepths: Though Jake is mostly oblivious and somewhat immature, he is capable of reassuring and helping out his daughters in the brief moments of clarity he has throughout the series. He's not perceptive but the show makes it clear that, unlike his own father, he does try to understand and care for his daughters. Even against his wife too, when Daria and Jane's art entry is considered controversial, while Helen is trying to make a case against it as well, Jake actually defends Daria with a good argument, showing that he will defend his daughter against his wife when needed.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: His dad, "Mad-Dog" Morgendorffer, was an abusive alcoholic who was emotionally distant, manipulative, and didn't care about the feelings of his wife (Jake's mother) or son (Jake). He also tried to mold Jake into a man (by sending him to military school, when Jake really wanted to go to tennis camp -- though "The Daria Hunter" revealed that Jake was sent to military school [[spoiler:after accidentally stepping on his dad's contact lens]]), but it really turned Jake into the man he is today.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Truth be told, he seems to be where Quinn got it from. Daria made an astute observation that Jake's frequent complaints about his childhood and feelings of neglect are how he manages to stay the center of attention.
* LethalChef: He tends to do most of the cooking at home, but whenever he attempts to experiment with new dishes they're always horrible. Though it's shown to be an even mix of him attempting to experiment (like recreating "Kitchen Sink Stew" that managed to burn his tongue black and making peanut sauce strong enough to eat through pipes) and him using recipes that are disgusting (like a Civil War cookbook). When he sticks to normal recipes like penne alla pesto he seems to do fine.
* ManChild: When stressed, Jake generally does one of two things: reverts to a helpless childlike state, or rages against his strict, distant, and long-deceased father. The outbursts are frequently interjected into conversations that had nothing to do with his childhood and appear to also function as a defense against criticism.
* MrViceGuy: Jake is a long-suffering, neurotic, hot-headed man but is portrayed as an overall good guy who loves his family and is an overall well-meaning person.
* NervousWreck: He's ''very'' neurotic and high-strung, being prone to dramatic outbursts when he gets stressed. This is largely due to his HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood caused by his abusive father.
* NeverMyFault: A bit downplayed in that, while he never does ''anything'' to harm Helen and the girls, he's often a little too quick to blame his abusive childhood and his father for the state of his life rather than actually use his energy to try and improve himself. Helen herself in "Psycho Therapy" called Jake out on how often he'll blame his dad for something that's just recently happened which he had nothing to do with.
-->'''Helen''': "Damn it I lost another client damn it! I can't understand why damn it! Nobody likes poor old Jake! Should I think about the reasons-oh, must be my father's fault. Where's the newspaper, damn it?!"
* NoIndoorVoice: He's almost always yelling, either out of excitement, exasperation, or desperation for attention.
* NostalgiaFilter: While he views his childhood as a total nightmare (which is actually rather justified due to his father and the abuse he suffered at military school), by contrast he looks back on his time at Middleton College more fondly than he probably should. This may be due to Middleton being the place where he met Helen. She on the other hand is well aware that Middleton was a low-rate school but allows Jake to believe otherwise since it's one of the few areas of his past that doesn't enrage or depress him.
* OpenMindedParent: As shown when he briefly mistook Trent's girlfriend for being there for Quinn. His reaction is one of mild surprise, but he's clearly not bothered by the idea of Quinn dating a girl.
-->Wow! I really ''don't'' know my kids!
* PapaWolf: In his own misguided way, Jake will not hesitate to do ''anything'' to be there for his children. When Daria is sick with a rash in "Ill," he literally rushes out the door [[DrivesLikeCrazy and nearly gets into an accident]] in order to take her to the doctor.
* ParentsAsPeople: Good father and loves his daughters. But he's often wrapped up in his neurosis and frustrations to properly function as a parent.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Jake continues to be miserable about how little respect he got from his now-deceased father.

Helen's youngest sister and Daria's aunt, She's an adult version of Daria, both in personality and appearance.
----
* BerserkButton: Invoked. She warns the valet that she doesn't mind if he leaves a dent on the car, but if he changes the radio station, he is dead.
* CoolAunt: Her first appearance has her two up with her '77 Triump Spitfire convertible, hands the keys to the valet after warning him to never change the station on her radio (never mind any dings on the car), and she and Daria bond over their dysfunctional family dynamics and how one day Daria will grow up and leave the family to pursue her own life.
* CoolCar: Her '77 Triumph Spitfire convertible.
* CoolOldLady: Though she's the youngest of Helen and her sisters. She listens to punk rock and the blues and discusses the dysfunction in their family with Daria.
* DeadpanSnarker: You know how she looks like an older version of her middle niece? She even acts like her.
* GenerationXerox: She and Daria look and act almost exactly alike, despite Daria being her niece.
* NeverMyFault: Invoked. Helen accused Amy of using her sisters as an excuse to get out of any household responsibility so she could do whatever she wanted.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She likes to think she's outside of Helen and Rita's SiblingRivalry, but when they start going at it Amy has little problem jumping in. This is rather fitting because, as she is seen as an older version of Daria, Amy has her flaws just as Daria does.
* ProperlyParanoid: She tried to have as little involvement as possible between Rita and Helen because she didn't want to get dragged into their arguing. Sure enough, the one time she actively inserts herself into the conflict to play peacemaker, Helen and Rita accuse her of PlayingTheVictimCard and using them as an excuse to do whatever she wanted when they were kids.
* TheUnfavourite:
** Feels this way compared to both of her sisters, though she's a bit more forgiving towards Rita than she is Helen. Being shown when she expected that Helen and Jake would've divorced and congratulated him on having the strength to put up with Helen, whereas she's apologetic about mixing up one of Rita's boyfriends with another.
** This is best exemplified when she shows up in "Aunt Nauseem," as Helen and Rita both jump on her by claiming Amy was a LazyBum who never did anything for the family.

Helen's older sister and the supposed favorite child of their parents. Rita is the main target of Helen's childhood bitterness and the one she often comes to blows with whenever she feels like complaining about her childhood. She's gone through many husbands and boyfriends and has at least one daughter, Erin, whose marriage and divorce are the plots of two separate episodes.
----
* CoolBigSis: {{Downplayed|Trope}}, her arguments with Helen made Amy hide in her room as a kid but as adults they get along more cordially and seemed to have bonded due to their mother unfavorably comparing them to Helen's intense work ethic.
* CrazyInTheHeadCrazyInTheBed: {{Downplayed}}; she is described to Jake Morgandorffer by her latest beau as, "Rita is a bit flighty, but she's a tiger in the bedroom."
* EntitledBastard: She feels perfectly justified to demand Helen be the one to oversee Erin and Brian's divorce just because Helen's a lawyer and they're family. When Helen repeatedly tries to explain she doesn't have much experience in matrimonial law, Rita acts like Helen's selfish.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Foolish to Helen's Responsible. WordOfGod has it that, as a young adult Rita tended to get involved in every and any youth movements that were popular at the time while Helen tried to lead a more structured life. Although Helen ''is'' a former hippie.
* GenerationXerox: If Daria takes after Amy, Quinn takes after Rita. Subverted in that Quinn and Daria are working to avoid the kind of tumultuous relationship their Aunts and Mother have, and that Quinn is more intelligent and active.
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: Her animosity with Helen over how they were raised.
* {{Housewife}}: Is implied to be this whenever she's married, whether she does any housework is up to debate.
* LazyBum: Claims she's too busy raising Erin to get a job, even though Erin's now in her 20s.
* MamaBear: For her daughter Erin's sake she tries to do everything she can to make sure Erin's asshole husband doesn't get anything in the divorce. Although all her efforts amount to making Helen feel guilty enough to help even though Helen repeatedly admits she doesn't have experience in matrimonial law.
* NoAccountingForTaste: The whole family seems to agree, that Rita doesn't make very good choices in men. There was the sculptor that she ended up dumping, the skydiving instructor who was killed when he fell on a cow, and [[NoodleIncident Bruno who's in some correctional facility]]. At Erin's wedding, she's revealed to be in a relationship with a guy named Paul, who Jake was friends with back in Scouts, but he grew up to be a [[TheBore massive bore.]]
-->'''Jake:''' Boy, that Rita sure knows how to pick 'em!
* ParentalFavoritism: Rita was apparently the golden child of the Barksdales, causing no end of resentment from Helen and Amy. Even as an adult, Rita is still getting preferential treatment from Mother Barksdale and it extends to Erin, though Rita claims the reason she gets along with her mom is because she's the only one who bothers to stay in contact with her, which Amy retorts by asking why she and Helen should bother maintaining a relationship with their mother that would just be AllTakeAndNoGive.
* PrettyFreeloader: Helen said she was "the prettiest" and Rita was a housewife and can't bother to hold a job because of Erin (who's an adult). She gets most of her money from her husbands, boyfriends, and her mother.
* ReallyGetsAround: She's had a few husbands and she's gone through a number of boyfriends. It hasn't been clarified as to who Erin's father is, and by her last appearance, she'd just been dumped by an actor.
* SexGoddess: She's described by a past lover as being a "tigress in the bedroom".
* SpoiledBrat: As a child and even as an adult her parents gave her whatever she wanted. Helen mentions that for her first wedding, Rita got a $4,000 lighted dance floor. Rita justifies this extravagance just because "Disco was king!"
* SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: Growing up Mother Barksdale used Helen to make Rita and Amy feel lazy and idiotic and Rita still seems to hold a grudge over the idea of her sister lording her career achievements and work ethic over her.
* TheUnfavorite: Even ''she'' has feelings about this, claiming that Helen's overachieving made both Rita and Amy look lazy, while Amy got out of doing anything for the family by locking herself in her room reading Russian novels.

[[folder:"Mad Dog" Morgendorffer]]
Jake's sociopathic father, now deceased, is largely responsible for Jake's fragile state of mind and neurosis as the result of an abusive upbringing. Despite never appearing onscreen, his influence is felt every time Jake goes off on a tangent about his childhood. It's stated that he was dead by the time he was Jake's age.
----
* AbusiveParents: He treated Jake like crap and sent him to military school after Jake mentioned he might've liked to go to tennis camp. Although Jake also says Mad Dog sent him after Jake accidentally stepped on one of his contact lenses.
* AwfulWeddedLife: Though this is entirely on Mad Dog's end due to the way he treated his wife Ruth. He emotionally abused both her and Jake, even giving Ruth fifty dollars a month for an allowance and expecting that would be enough to take care of the house and the children.
* DadTheVeteran: According to WordOfGod he was in the U.S. Army because of the draft.
* DomesticAbuse: Of the emotional sort, towards his wife Ruth, who tries to avoid admitting he's less than perfect until her son's rants drive her to bitterly complain about how stingy and mean he was.
** In [[ItsAllThereInTheManual The Daria Diaries]], Jake wrote a letter telling his mother he isn't angry at her because she could never stand up to Mad Dog.
* TheGhost: Is always mentioned but never seen in person, even when Jake is having flashbacks.
* {{Jerkass}}: He is certainly worse than any other jerkass character that has appeared on the show.
* KarmicDeath: He's been long dead, and his own son is clearly going to live a lot longer than he ever did.
* KickTheDog: As implied in their actions. Although it could count possibly also have a MoralEventHorizon.
* KnightOfCerebus: While Jake's neurotic behavior is treated as a source of comedy, Mad Dog's abusive treatment of Jake and Ruth is plainly ''not'' meant to be seen as funny. "Jake of Hearts" is dedicated towards his wife and son finally discussing what a bastard he was, which Ruth's been lying about even years after he died.
* NoNameGiven: He's only referred to as Mad Dog or "Dad" by Jake and his mother.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: No formal birth name has been given, just his nickname.
* ParentalNeglect: Starved Jake and Ruth of love and affection. He refused to allow Jake to come home on holidays for flimsy excuses, and didn't even attend Jake's wedding on the grounds that "the dog needs his toenails clipped."
* PosthumousCharacter: We only find this out in ''Jake of Hearts'' during the third season, but Mad Dog died. Jake attributes this to one of the reasons why he's a better man than his father since apparently, Mad Dog died at Jake's current age.
* TheSociopath: No empathy towards his son (and presumably the whole family) and seemed hell-bent on making Jake miserable.
* SociopathicSoldier: Fought in WWII according to WordOfGod. For some reason, it's popular in {{Fanon}} to have in the Korean War, too.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: It's a funny slice-of-life show, but the villainy of Mad Dog shows how a childhood of abuse has shaped Jake for the worse.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: Towards Jake.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: His wife says he had a razor phobia, which is why he never taught Jake how to shave.

Mother of Jake and Daria's paternal grandmother. She still believes that it's a woman's role to be a housewife that pleases her man, and pesters Helen about being a working mother and wife. She is revealed to be highly resentful of her late husband and leaves to travel the world,
----
* FiftiesHair: Has the short, curly pageboy any housewife of the era would be coiffed in.
* AwfulWeddedLife: Mad Dog mistreated her and the kids; she was only given an allowance of $50.00 a month just for household purposes which could only buy a girdle.
* ExtremeDoormat: [[AllThereInTheManual in "The Daria Diaries"]] Jake states that he doesn't blame her for him being sent to the military academy because she could "Never stand up to Dad."
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Her chili is delicious yet not suited for Jake's heart condition.
* {{Housewife}}: Obviously played this role and believes in it despite hating every second of it.
* {{Hypocrite}}: After admitting that she was a miserable homemaker and going off to travel, she dares to scold Helen and Quinn about not molding their lives in a similar fashion to hers while she was still married.
* LoveMartyr: Put up with her husband a lot and only starts admitting what a scumbag he was when Jake lets out a rant about him.
* MenAreStrongWomenArePretty: Tells Quinn not to read so much due to the risk of wrinkles and once offered money to Daria to change her hair.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: Shorter than 5'2" Daria.
* NeverASelfMadeWoman: Invoked when she questions Quinn's desire to be a doctor because she can "Marry one."
* ObnoxiousInLaws: Pesters Helen about her cooking (which was a more heart-healthy alternative) and about how she isn't a housewife.
* ParentalFavoritism: Grandparent variant. Clearly shows she prefers Quinn for being so pretty and feminine and is joyous to see her.
* ParentalNeglect: She and Mad Dog have avoided Jake's major life events and left him in military school during vacation, though it may not be of her own choice.
* SelectiveObliviousness: At first, regarding her husband's character.
* StayInTheKitchen: Lived by this and insists on her daughter-in-law and granddaughters abiding by it; she later admits she was miserable. When Quinn is briefly motivated to be a cardiologist to prevent her dad from having another heart attack, Ruth tries to discourage her from studying because she should be only focusing on getting a rich husband.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: She soon admits how terrible her husband was.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mother Barksdale]]

Mother of Helen, Rita, and Amy, and Daria's maternal grandmother. Her blatant favoritism over Rita is one of the reasons why Helen is such a workaholic, and also one of the reasons why Helen has some childhood bitterness issues of her own.
----
* AbusiveParents: Emotionally abusive, but not to the same extent as Mad Dog Morgendorffer. Her doting on Rita put a lot of stress on Helen and led her to become the neurotic workaholic she is today, made Amy feel so alienated she spent most of her adolescence trying to avoid her sisters when she wasn't snarking at them, ''and'' is the main source of Rita's SpoiledBrat attitude.
* BitCharacter: She's not mentioned as frequently as Jake's father, and her only prominent influence appeared in "I Don't" and "Aunt Nauseem."
* DotingParent: To Rita and Erin. Helen's especially not pleased that her mother ignores Daria and Quinn as much as she ignores her.
-->'''Helen''': That's mom, always thinking of her grandchildren. One of them, anyway.
* {{Foil}}: To Mad Dog. The two of them employed rather questionable parenting towards their respective offspring, but whereas Mad Dog was horrifyingly abusive and domineering, Mother Barksdale overly favored one child and was neglectful towards the others. There's also the matter that Mother Barksdale is still alive and she's still showing this favoritism to Rita as well as Rita's daughter Erin.
* TheGhost: She's never appeared on screen, but she has more influence over the course of certain episodes due to the fact that she's still alive.
* ParentalNeglect: Towards Helen and Amy. Also doubles as being a neglectful grandmother, as the only time we know of her ever acknowledging Daria was when she offered her a hundred dollars if she changed her hairstyle. Other than that, it's clear she's never had much presence in Daria or Quinn's lives.
* PottyFailure: Could be a bed wetter as implied when she is noted to visit the Morgendorffers in [[AllThereInTheManual "The Daria Database"]] and Daria notes that one side of the bed is dry; Ruth Morgendorffer doesn't seem to be a bed wetter so it can likely be her.
* RichBitch: Subverted. WordOfGod claims the Barksdales were not a wealthy family, but Mother Barksdale and her husband would never hesitate to give Rita whatever she wanted.
-->'''Helen''': Nothing but the best for her favorite daughter's darling offspring.
* SatelliteCharacter: She's only prominently discussed if Rita is involved in an episode.
* WellDoneDaughterGal: She famously called Rita "the pretty one" and spoiled her rotten, stressing out Helen to perfectionism but on a dime, she'd turn around and tell Rita and Amy they should ape Helen's work ethic and success. Helen and Amy at this point are through trying to please her.

Daria's BestFriend, is also antisocial but in a more nonconformist way. Has a bit of a {{goth}} streak, at least in her tastes in art, and also some artistic talent that tends to go under-appreciated due to [[NightmareFetishist her tastes]]. Has rather...[[HandsOffParenting hands-off parents]].
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: Alison - who doesn't make mistakes - gets her confused for a lesbian in "Is It Fall Yet?" which actually leads to Jane questioning her sexuality for a brief period of time. She can also paint Daria naked from memory. One of the intros even has Jane acknowledging the fanshipping she and Daria inevitably get while Daria models for her.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Apparently Ms.Defoe is the only teacher Jane has never been sarcastic to because Ms. Defoe actually treats her with respect and recognizes that she has a lot of artistic talent.
* BetaCouple: With Tom [[spoiler: before they break up.]]
* BookDumb: Insightful and artistic, Jane nevertheless has some frustration with her grades. She eventually vents to Daria that she's somewhat jealous that she and Tom can choose from some of the top schools while her only strong suit is her art. She states in one episode that she has a C average in math which can be dropped to a D by a single assignment. Her academic performance in other subjects is never specifically mentioned, but it's implied that she is less successful than Daria or Jodie. As she says in "Prize Fighters":
--> ''Look, I'm good at the things I'm good at. "Grades" isn't one of them.''
* BrainyBrunette: Not academically, but she's very street smart, has an in-depth knowledge of art, and makes witty asides.
* DeadpanSnarker: Sometimes forms [[ThoseTwoGuys Those Two Girls]] with Daria, as they spend some episodes just standing back watching the madness.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Her friendship with Daria is one of the focal points of the show, and she gets a number of episodes in the spotlight.
* EverybodyHasStandards: The first incident of a falling out between Jane and Daria was the death of Tommy Sherman. Daria continued taking shots at Tommy after his death, something that otherwise equally cynical Jane found to be distasteful.
* EverybodyHatesMathematics: She does not enjoy math at all. She even uses her short-lived jock perks to skip a math test.
* FatalAttractor: Jane has a particularly jaded love life, with most of the guys she ends up attracted to being revealed as judgmental assholes. Tom, the one boyfriend she had who was a legitimately decent guy, still cheated on her with Daria. Not to mention the time she received unwanted advances from a girl who tried to convince Jane she was gay just to sleep with her.
* FatalFlaw: Jane is normally very well adjusted, but whenever she has a personal problem she tends to try to run from it or pretend it's not there.
* {{Foil}}: Jane shows herself to be more sociable than Daria when she tries. Whereas Daria has been rather misanthropic since childhood (and not entirely happy with it), Jane's artistic sensibilities make her more of an outcast by choice. Jane actually has a sense of fashion, however unconventional it may be, while Daria puts no effort into her appearance. Their families are also contrasting, with Jane's relatively uninvolved bohemian parents versus Daria's driven and emotional yuppie couple.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Responsible one compared to [[StonersAreFunny Trent]], [[TheSlacker but only because he's irresponsible compared to anyone]].
%% * FurBikini: In the ending credits
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Daria. She's her only friend, they have a lot in common and spend a lot of time together at school. [[spoiler: The series ends with the two of them maintaining their friendship even after going their separate ways, with the end credits hinting that they'll go on to form a successful talk show together.]]
* HiddenDepths: She's one of the fastest runners in the school and enjoys running outside, despite her and Daria's usual disdain for sports.
* HonorBeforeReason: In one episode, she was contracted to make copies of famous art pieces. She looked for ways to find out why this was bad, but the operation itself was perfectly legal, didn't really harm anyone, and made her lots of money. Her ''real'' issue was that she felt she was compromising her artistic integrity and not being true to her own art and style. She ultimately gives up the job at the end, though she admits that the job itself, outside of the massive workload, wasn't bad.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She can be just as cynical and sarcastic as Daria, but Jane is definitely much nicer, friendlier, likable, and more well-adjusted than she is. Jane is also a caring and supportive friend to Daria.
%%* TheLancer
* LivingEmotionalCrutch:
** Not nearly as bad or parasitic as most other examples, but Daria does not hold up well without Jane.
** Trent has a hard time when she's not at home. "Lane Miserables" showed him quickly getting upset when he realized Jane wasn't home amid all of his nastier older siblings and oblivious parents, so he quickly followed her to the Morgendorffers. His role in the final movie has him on edge when he realizes Jane will be leaving for college, accusing her of selling out because he's worried she'll abandon him.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Just edging in: she's the youngest of five, with her eldest sibling already a parent.
* MoralityPet: One of the very few people [[TheCynic Daria]] is nice to.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Has a somewhat subdued one of these after she wishes for Tommy Sherman's death and it happens. She knows it was just a crazy coincidence and she's not responsible, but it still disturbs her.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Hilariously subverted: Jane is not only aware and fine with Daria's crush on Trent, she tends to take great pleasure in teasing Daria about it.
* NightmareFetishist: Her paintings are often morbid or disturbing, and she's an avid viewer of ''Sick, Sad World'' along with Daria.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Had a make-out session in the laundry room of Brittany's house with a boy that she was sorta disdainful of (turned into full-out disdain after the guy's technique was sloppy and crude). Also when she was rebounding from Tom, she was willing to overlook warning signs when she went out with a nostalgia hipster/fetishist (in contrast Tom and Daria saw through the guy almost instantly).
* TheNotLoveInterest: Daria's friendship with Jane is easily her most significant relationship. By the finale, they even [[spoiler: end up attending colleges with close proximity]].
* OnlyFriend: Daria's best and only friend.
-->'''Daria''': Sorry, all my support groups have a one-member limit.
* OnlySaneWoman: Along with Daria, she's more level-headed than most of the other students, and Jane and Daria spend quite a few episodes snarking at the insanity around them. Jane also tends to be this in her own family, who are so self-absorbed it's a wonder how they could grow up together.
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: The gravelly stoner chick effect that Wendy Hoopes initially used for Jane was a pain to keep up and eventually she just reverted to using her normal speaking voice.
* ReallyGetsAround: Unlike Daria, who has only one boyfriend during the entire show, Jane has been seen with more guys for either short-term relationships or just brief flings.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Does a pretty good job of dressing conventionally (to the point where the cheerleaders think she's a new student and invite her to try out for the squad), which she finds upsetting because she was supposed to fail at it, as part of a bizarre assignment from Mr. O'Neill's class. She also looks pretty snazzy in her vintage dresses from "Life in the Past Lane", although she quickly gets annoyed with all the effort that goes into coordinating them.
* SilentSnarker: Jane proves that she can be snarky through her drawings as well. When two modeling scout agents try to look for models in the school, Jane responds to the offer by drawing them as vultures.
-->'''Romanica''': [[SarcasmMode You're more interested in the design end of things.]]\
'''Claude''': [[ActuallyPrettyFunny That's an excellent likeness of you, darling.]]
* SkintoneSclerae: Similar to Daria, as a way of showing they've both got heavy eyelids.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: A female example. She's dark-haired, taller than Daria, and obviously very snarky.

Lawndale's star quarterback who ''constantly'' wears his football uniform, complete with pads, and [[InsultToRocks makes a box of rocks look smart]]. Nevertheless he's quite friendly and good-natured, even if his stupidity usually makes him very annoying. In a constant on-off relationship with Brittany.
----
* BrainlessBeauty: A handsome and popular football player, and easily the dumbest character in the series. [[spoiler: He's apparently good looking enough to score a modeling contract from the Amazon Modeling Agency...who were initially looking for a ''female'' model.]]
* CasualSportsJersey: Kevin wears his sports uniform in and out of his football practices.
* CurbStompBattle: Kevin is a lover, not a fighter and ended on the receiving end of a vicious one. In an episode where he sees the linebacker Robert making out with Brittany, he goes ballistic and jumps a surprised Robert. After the initial couple of hits, Robert easily takes control of the fight and mashes Kevin's face into a car multiple times. Kevin had to be carried out on a stretcher and had a broken jaw among other injuries, while Robert has little more than a black eye.
* TheDitz: He served as the show's "village idiot."
* DumbJock: Kevin Thompson is easily a finalist for the dumbest living organism in Lawndale. While not a bully, he's a little narcissistic, dumb as a box of rocks, wears his uniform everywhere, and is in general bad at everything that isn't football.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine
* FragileSpeedster: He's a skinny guy and was completely destroyed in a fight with his fellow player Robert. What makes Kevin the star quarterback is his great running speed and ability to see gaps in the opposition's defense. In the times that he's shown actually playing, he'll be running in the ball.
* FriendToAllChildren: Kevin shows from time to time an ease to reach out to children. It's mainly seen in his gig as motivational speeker for safety (the kids loved him, though maybe the message didn't get across). He also genuinely tried to teach how to do CPR while working with Brittany as lifeguards in the pool and tried to do a good job of showing children around the school in "Boxing Daria". Hell, he even became an entertainer of kid's parties after graduating.
* GeniusDitz: According to "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" Kevin is apparently the only talented quarterback in the school.
** He also knows Brittany well enough to know she wouldn't stand going out with him for long if he quitted the football team; after all, he is as much of an adherent to the honor code of popularity as she is.
* GlassCannon: He's the head quarterback and looks fairly impressive in regards to strength. But on the outlandishly rare occasion you get to see him outside of his uniform, he's actually a particularly scrawny little guy.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler: With Brittany twenty years after the show]].
* HeldBackInSchool: [[spoiler: He flunked his senior year in the series finale.]]
* HeroicBSOD: In "A Tree Grows in Lawndale", he tries to do a wheelie on his motorcycle, but crashes into the Tommy Sherman Memorial Tree and sprains his knee. Kevin is utterly distraught, as he as ruined the memorial to his hero, and on top of that he can't play football due to his injury. His whining reaches {{Wangst}} territory, PlayedForLaughs.
-->'''Brittany:''' No! It can be like before! Let me bring you a Gatorade!

* InformedAbility: You'd think the school would put up with his idiocy because he's a good football player, but we don't get solid indicators either way that he is until Season 4. The irony is that good quarterbacks are quick-thinkers so they can achieve multiple ways of getting a touchdown, and Kevin is, to put it politely, ''not'' a quick-thinker.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He insults Daria even as he attempts to compliment her. His jerkishness is usually the result of ignorance or stupidity rather than being mean.
* LimitedWardrobe: He almost always wears his football uniform, from the pads to the cleats. It gets better: on the rare occasions he's seen out of uniform, he's usually wearing the exact same shirt, which features the text "Hi, kids!" and a children's character who appears to be an {{Expy}} of Elmo from ''Series/SesameStreet''.
* LovableJock: He's sweet to his head cheerleader girlfriend, Brittany, genuinely friendly to his teammates, and amicable towards everyone else, including the students who are below him on the high-school popularity hierarchy; he's mostly friendly towards Daria and Jane, and has asked them for advice a couple of times. While he will remind Daria of her low popularity (and imply he has a poor concept of her because of this), he isn't a bully about it or even close.
* MakeOutKids: With Brittany.
* NiceGuy: He may be the popular idiot jock, but Kevin is actually a pretty decent, well-meaning person.
* OddFriendship: Despite annoying the hell out of Mack, the two of them are friends (and in the end credits of "Is It College Yet", the two of them have an ice cream company together). He'll also sometimes chat with Daria and Jane without having an agenda, who put up with him as harmless.
* OfficialCouple: With Brittany, [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Heartwarming/Daria even twenty years later]].
* PairTheDumbOnes: With DumbBlonde Brittany. Even if they often cheat on each other, they are in a relationship from the beginning to the end of the show. [[HappilyMarried And beyond]].
* PopularIsDumb: Along with his equally vapid cheerleader girlfriend, they are textbook examples.
* ReallyGetsAround: Neither Brittany nor Kevin is completely faithful to each other, although Kevin is far more faithful to her, and later seasons hint that he's also vastly more in love with her than she is with him.
* TheQuarterback: "Played for laughs" variant.
* [[WhenSheSmiles When He Smiles]]: According to Brittany, "women can't resist [his] smile."

Kevin's girlfriend. Brittany is a peppy, bubbly cheerleader, and is definitely the smarter of the two (though not by much). Possibly they only get together because only they can put up with each other. Astoundingly, [[http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2IjQqATzZCs/THrXktWuQXI/AAAAAAAAAA8/TofX5IPxMwE/s1600/Brittany+Meets+Her+Destiny+(562+x+450).jpg may be a real person who has found her true calling.]]
----
* AllCheeringAllTheTime: Sometimes done with Brittany, such as in "Malled" when she tries to start a cheer on the bus ride to a field trip.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: Raises five kids with Kevin twenty years after the show.]]
* BatmanGambit: ''Brittany'', of all people, pulls one on Kevin in "Fair Enough," using his idiocy against him (not that it was difficult to do, mind you).
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She starts talking to Daria because she helped her to understand vanishing point at art class, so she invites Daria to her party, even if she unintentionally calls her unpopular to her face. She also welcomes Jane to her party as long as she can help her in geometry as well.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Brittany is surprisingly ''ruthless'' at paintball.
* BoobBasedGag: Her comically huge breasts are often parodied or played for laughs, such as Daria getting annoyed by how much they press against her when they enter a tiny shack together.
-->'''Daria:''' Um, Brittany, would you mind pointing those things in another direction?
* BrainlessBeauty: As part of her "pretty but ditzy" cheerleader characterization.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Her large bust makes her a DudeMagnet, with Trent getting [[DistractedByTheSexy visibly distracted]] when he first meets her.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: One episode had Brittany invite Daria to her party for simply helping her in art class and in spite of not being "cool" (not to mention Upchuck getting an invite for helping her dissect a frog). Later episodes make it hard to imagine that she'd be aware of social divisions present in high school, even though it's still an issue. Brittany's voice was also ''MUCH'' lower-pitched in episode two. Additionally, in the first season she shows a surprising amount of aptitude towards romantic plays - but she has trouble with The Canterbury Tales.
* CharacterTic: Tends to twirl her pigtails through her finger when trying to think (emphasis on trying).
* ClingyJealousGirl: Woe to anyone she perceives as trying to get between her and Kevin.
* CuteButCacophonic: With her high-pitched voice, it's very hard to understand her whenever she's hysterical. However, in "The Old and the Beautiful", residents at a retirement home take a liking to Brittany's voice.
* TheDitz: She isn't terribly bright and comes off as naive and dim-witted.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Brittany actually has a disturbing tendency to hit Kevin whenever he starts to annoy her, and she's never called on it because it's PlayedForLaughs.
* DumbBlonde: A quintessential example, and she fits (nearly) all the stereotypes associated with the trope: rich, pretty, popular, and obviously a blonde BrainlessBeauty cheerleader. The only exception to the stereotype is that she is actally a fairly nice person. There are also a couple times in which she's surprisingly insightful.
* DumbassHasAPoint: After Jane and Jodie fail to calm Daria about her embarrassment for not using her contact lenses and her glasses out of vanity, Brittany is the only one who manages to say something useful: Brittany tells Daria that her having a moment of self-awareness about her appearance made her feel a bit better about herself because she is not shallow and hollow for caring about her looks, they are just normal human beings, and this actually makes Daria feel better about herself. Of course, Brittany thinks that [[PurelyAestheticGlasses her new glasses]] [[SmartPeopleWearGlasses actually worked]].
* DysfunctionalFamily: Her step-mom is more of her friend than an actual mom and her dad spoils her and treats her little brother (a budding psycho, extremely annoying kid) like crap.
* {{Expy}}: According to WordOfGod, Brittany was intentionally based off of former MTV V.J. and star Jenny [=McCarthy=] as what they merely imagined how she was as a teenager (although in Real Life Jenny was a straight A student, fairly down to earth although still pretty funny).
%%* FeeFiFauxPas
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine
* GeniusDitz: While not exactly "academic genius", she has bright moments.
** Her tactical skills in "The Daria Hunter", a send-up of the original film version of ''Film/BuffyTheVampireSlayer''.
** She's a very talented cheerleader.
** She attempts to reenact the balcony scene from ''Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet'' in "Café Disaffecto" and has the lines memorized until Kevin ruins the scene.
** She shows an interest in ''Literature/TheCanterburyTales''. While maybe not for the intended reasons, she at least loves some of the stories.
** She managed to get into Great Prairie State University, let alone that she actually managed to graduate high school, whereas Kevin has to repeat his senior year.
** She manages to come up with ''just'' the right thing to say to Daria in "Through a Lens Darkly".
* GenkiGirl: Usually a bubbly and energetic person.
* GirlishPigtails: Brittany sports blonde pigtails and has a childish personality.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler: Despite showing signs of breaking up with him in the series finale, she becomes this with Kevin and they are still going strong twenty years after]].
* HiddenDepths: She shows alarming tactical knowledge and scheming ability when the situation calls for it or she's sufficiently provoked.
* LovableAlphaBitch: She and the other cheerleaders have shades of this. She's shallow, popular, and often InnocentlyInsensitive around the less-cool students, but still friendly and nice enough to avert the AlphaBitch trope. Then again, Brittany is a rigid follower and enforcer of the popularity codes that rule, say, who can date who. [[HonorBeforeReason Even when it makes her feel miserable]].
%% * MakeOutKids: With Kevin.
* NiceGirl: Often friendly, optimistic, and generous.
* OddFriendship:
** For all their contrasting faults and flaws, she gets along surprisingly well with Daria.
** With Jodie. Jodie is a straight-A hyperachieving and very academically driven girl who cares little for popularity and barely has a social life due to how much her parents expect her to do and yet whatever little time she has to socialize she actively chooses to spend with Brittany (Or Daria).
* OfficialCouple: With Kevin, [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Heartwarming/Daria even twenty years later]].
* OnlySaneWoman: Brittany is closer to Earth than Kevin, in the sense that Neptune is closer to Earth compared to Pluto (which isn't even considered a planet anymore). A RunningGag on the show is that Kevin is either frequently on academic probation because of his bad grades or relies on getting passes from tests because he's the school quarterback. Brittany, however, has never had to deal with any of that onscreen, and is implied that she puts in just enough effort to skate by with the bare requirement for staying on the cheerleading team. [[spoiler:Then in the series finale, she actually ends up getting accepted into community college while Kevin has to repeat his senior year.]]
* PairTheDumbOnes: With DumbJock Kevin. Even if they often cheat on each other, they are in a relationship from the beginning to the end of the show. [[HappilyMarried And beyond]].
* PomPomGirl: Certainly the BrainlessBeauty who ReallyGetsAround, but she's actually a mostly nice person (she only really loses her temper with Kevin, and even then, it's not that often); she's certainly on very friendly terms with Daria (as one-sided as this tends to be).
* PopularIsDumb: Along with her equally vapid DumbJock boyfriend, they are textbook examples.
* ReallyGetsAround: Neither Brittany nor Kevin are completely faithful to each other, but she tends to get spotlighted more in this regard.
* SheFu: Brittany's paintball game plan in "The Daria Hunter".
* SimpletonVoice: Her high-pitched voice befits her lack of book smarts.
* SmartBall: Occasionally manages to say something that's actually helpful, if only by accident.
-->'''Mr. [=DeMartino=]:''' Ah, ''Brittany.'' Sometimes, despite a complete lack of ''INSIGHT,'' you '''stumble''' upon an interesting answer.
-->'''Brittany:''' [[ComicallyMissingThePoint Wow! And I didn't even read the chapter!]]
* WhiteSheep: Her dad may be a snob, her step-mom might be a gold digger, and her brother is a [[strike:spoiled brat]] budding serial killer, but Brittany is filled to the brim with good intentions and happy thoughts. Unless of course she thinks someone is making a move on Kevin.
** A glaring example is when Kevin ''actually buys a car'' for the Economy assignment, and even Brittany understood that they were only supposed to have the interview with the salesman to get information.
* YourMakeupIsRunning: Whenever she cries, expect a stream of mascara to run down her face.

One of the school's few black students, Jodie is a combo overachiever and token black kid and knows both facts well, to the point that the demands both bring wear on her. She's also one of the few people in school who Daria and Jane talk to on a regular basis, and is often the one who calls Daria out on her behavior when she's being especially high-and-mighty.
----
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: As one of Daria’s few intellectual peers she is often the one to find chinks in her logic.
* BetaCouple: With Mack as the only other consistent couple among the teen characters aside from Kevin and Brittany.
* BlackAndNerdy: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. She's black and sacrifices a social life in order to do better in school, but she is not necessarily nerdy. She's considered "cool" by the others.
* BookSmart: Like Daria, she's very good academically compared to most of the other students.
* DeadpanSnarker: Doesn't express it outwardly like Daria and Jane, but she mutters snarky replies regarding her idiotic peers and the adults.
* EducationMama: Jodie's parents constantly push her to perform well academically, to the point of not allowing her vacation time if she could be attending an academic function instead.
* ExtracurricularEnthusiast: Though sometimes she may not necessarily ''want'' to do all those activities.
* {{Foil}}:
** An intellectual equal to Daria, Jodie is similarly cynical and frustrated, but still opts to be more active in the community, causing her no small amount of strife.
*** Daria and Jodie are both rather snarky individuals frustrated by the idiocy they're surrounded by on a daily basis. The difference between them is Daria is allowed more freedom to speak her mind whereas Jodie is trapped in the role of being the "Queen of the Negroes" at Lawndale High, having to act as a flawless role model for the other Black students despite there being so little of them.
** Her parents also serve as Foils for Jake and Helen, as they are both successful in their fields and have daughters, but while Jake and Helen allow Daria to be herself (even with her anti-social habits), Jodie's parents force her into school and social activities in an attempt to push Jodie to be her best.
** The sharpest contrast has to be with Brittany. Both Jodie and Brittany are upper-middle-class teens with jock boyfriends and a high social presence, but Jodie is far smarter and despite having a more stable relationship with Mack isn't obnoxiously lovey-dovey; also while Brittany has a party thrown for her after getting a C minus by her father and stepmother, Jodie's parents hardly allow Jodie any opportunity to just relax.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic
* GoGetterGirl: This has something to do with the pressure of being one of the few black students at Lawndale High as well as her parents.
* HiddenDisdainReveal: It's all but outright said that Jodie and Mack share a deep loathing for both Lawndale High and Lawndale due to being two of the only African American teens in the community and constantly feeling marginalized by their idiot compatriots. The musical episode shows the two feigning worry about the town being destroyed by a hurricane, and are both visibly disappointed it's still standing by the episode's end.
* LikeGoesWithLike: Mack and Jodie, who are two of the few African American students at Lawndale High, are dating each other. While they do like each other, they also feel the social pressure to be good role models for the local black community. It is not clear how much of their relationship is due to one and how much to the other.
* NiceGirl: Good-natured, kind, patient, one of the nicest of the characters.
* OnlySaneWoman: One of the few level-headed students.
* PragmaticHero: There are times when she's shown to be less morally rigid than Daria; when confronted by the possibility that she was declined for a bank loan due to racism, she side-steps the issue entirely by name-dropping her rich father to win over a banker. It sparks an argument between her and Daria, who wants to address the possible racism and make a statement; Jodie doesn't assume it was racism and, while she acknowledges that it's a possibility, she doesn't care because she got what she wanted in the end. She also doesn't mind using her father's name, rather than getting the loan on her own merits, which was part of their assignment for class.
* SassyBlackWoman: Defied even though Jodie can be snarky when she feels like it. In fact, the one time someone uses the word "Sassy" to describe Jodie, it was used as an example of how said person (self-absorbed magazine publisher Val) was not just a self-deluding moron but also racist.
* SelfAppliedNickname: Refers to herself as "Queen of the Negroes" in her character-defining rant about dealing with being a role model to other black kids (which barely amounts to a handful with both her and Mack added in).
* TeenGenius: She was once selected alongside Daria as a possible candidate for a school for gifted intelligence. And along with Daria and Charles, she is one of the final contenders for a $10,000 scholarship whose entry was an essay.
* TokenMinority: And very aware of it, as is Mack. In the finale, she decides to attend a historically black college so she can socially unwind.
* TokenMinorityCouple: With Mack. It's reached a point where she and Mack are frequently voted Homecoming King and Queen as a sad attempt by the school to seem progressive.

The other token black kid at Lawndale, Mack is Jodie's boyfriend and captain of the football team. As such, he's forced to interact with Kevin on a regular basis, much to his dismay. One of his few defining traits is that he's bad with money, and has been overdrawn on his allowance since elementary school.
----
* AcademicAthlete: He's the captain of the football team and the only one who does well in school. It's noted in "Fizz Ed", he's the only one not on academic probation, as well as the only one who can count by halves. He is also noted as one of the Lawndale High athletes who not only doesn't get byes, he doesn't even get ''offered'' byes.
* BerserkButton: He ''hates'' Kevin's favored epithet of "Mack Daddy." In fact, Daria's dream in ''Murder She Snored'' has Mack beat Kevin to death with a golf club just to make him stop.
%% * BetaCouple: With Jodie.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: He's not so much Kevin's friend as he is Kevin's babysitter due to the quarterback's startling low IQ and lack of common sense.
* DeadpanSnarker: Usually at Kevin, who of course isn't smart enough to understand he's being snarked at.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic
* TheGenericGuy: While his girlfriend Jodie got development in Season 2, Mack didn't do much of anything beyond the incredibly annoyed StraightMan to [[TheDitz Kevin]].
* JackOfAllTrades: He's the Captain of the football team and this is his role on it. Unfortunately for the team, he's at best a mediocre quarterback lacking the speed and perception that a star qb should have, so when Kevin was off the team due to a knee injury, the Lions completely tanked.
* LikeGoesWithLike: With Jodie. While he genuinely likes Jodie, both admit that they are together just for the sake of being the only African-American couple in the school.
* NiceGuy: He may not have much development as his girlfriend, but from what we got, he seems to be a normal, easygoing kind of guy.
* NotSoAboveItAll: As mentioned above, Mack has been overdrawn on his allowance since ''third grade'', so much so that he's eventually forced to take a summer job as an ice cream truck driver just to pay it all off. It's implied that his spending habits rival-if not exceed-that of '''even the fashion club!'''
* OnlySaneMan: When dealing with Kevin and the other football players, he's the most levelheaded and the only one with common sense.
* OutOfFocus: WordOfGod says one reason he wasn't developed more was because of the voice acting issue (above), which kept them from ever finding a VA whose personal style they could work with.
* SatelliteCharacter: Mostly appears around Jodie and Kevin, and has no CharacterDevelopment on his own.
* TokenMinority: One of the few black students and very aware of it, as is Jodie.
* TokenMinorityCouple: With Jodie. The only black recurring characters who are also paired together as a couple.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Kevin. The two seem to have the only actual friendship on the football team, but Mack is most often exasperated by Kevin's stupidity and his constant use of the hated nickname "Mack Daddy."

* CasanovaWannabe: Notoriously unattractive but he uses his act on all girls equally, including Daria.
* CharacterCatchphrase: (''flirtatious purr'') "''Feisty!''"
* EmbarrassingNickname: "Upchuck" is another word for vomit...as in what rises up in girls' throats when Charles hits on them.
* HiddenDepths:
** While he never loses his hormone-driven slimy attitude towards anything female, later episodes show he's actually fairly competent as DJ, magician, and anchor, and he's fairly knowledgeable about schoolwork too. If he'd quit sexually harassing the girls, he'd be second only to Jodie in terms of social, extracurricular, and academic achievement (and would probably get a girlfriend much easier).
** [[AllThereInTheManual The Daria Diaries]] reveal he has his own website, that he's a comedy aficionado, and that he collects fast food toys.
** He's one of three Lawndale students, the others being Daria and Jodie, to be competing for the Wizard Foundation scholarship prize in "Prize Fighters".
** He apparently has some artistic talent, as his entry into the art contest in "Arts 'n Crass" was a rather detailed-looking (for comparison, look at Brittany's entry) painting of himself with a CoolCar and two luscious ladies as arm candy.
* HormoneAddledTeenager: A textbook example. As pointed out below, the only things on his mind are sex, sex, and more sex.
* HotBlooded: The majority of his lines are over-the-top flirtations.

A {{goth}} girl (the only one at Lawndale, by the looks of things) and perpetual background character.
----
* AscendedExtra: A minor example; near the end of the series (including "Is It College Yet?") she became slightly more important, likely because she was popular with the fanbase.
* BurgerFool: In "Mart of Darkness", Andrea is found dressed up in full uniform for a wholesale club and tries to escape Daria's and Jane's snarky wrath (until Daria and Jane vowed to keep her embarrassing job a secret).
* FreezeFrameBonus: Her last name is only ever mentioned on an attendance chart.
* {{Goth}}: Though she gets about three lines per season on average, she is unmistakably Lawndale High's token goth kid.
* HiddenDepths: ''The Daria Database" features a ComicStrip/PrinceValiant style comic by Andrea where her enemies consist of Principal Li, Upchuck, Mr. [=DeMartino=], Mr. O'Neill, Brittany, Kevin, and Mack. It also reveals she admires Ms. Barch.
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: In ''Is It College Yet?'', Andrea is very surprised when Upchuck hits on her. [[spoiler:He is equally surprised when she accepts his offer]].
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite appearing to be a stoic goth, who would perfectly be friends with Daria and Jane but is still part of the background who never interacts with them, it's revealed in "Mart of Darkness" that she is afraid Daria and Jane would make fun of her. She is relieved when both show her some empathy and leave her alone.
* PairTheSpares: [[spoiler: Accepts to go out with Upchuck, which surprises both of them.]]
* TheQuietOne: You would count her speaking parts on the fingers of your hands.
* RecurringExtra: She is often seen showing up the background of the students and is one of the few to have lines and an actual name.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gives it to Jane and Daria in "Mart of Darkness" about their snarkiness (while revealing she is humiliated by her job, they promise not to tell); gives it to Quinn in "Too Cute" when Quinn tries to use the concept of Sisterhood for support for her plastic surgery.

Self-appointed President of the Fashion Club, and Quinn's main rival. Sandi rules the Fashion Club with an iron fist (albeit a well-accessorized one), making sure that none of the other girls outshine her in popularity. She is constantly browbeating Stacy and trying to undermine Quinn's authority, the latter of which she feels is her main competition.
----

* AlphaBitch:
** It should be noted that Sandi's bitchiness seems to be concentrated solely within the confines of the Fashion Club, as she spends more time trying to humiliate Quinn and belittle Stacey than she does anyone else. The one time she actually tried to be mean to Daria, she felt too intimidated to actually say anything to her.
** Sandi may very well be a {{Deconstruction}} of the Alpha Bitch as, aside from the attraction she receives from boys, as the series progresses she doesn't appear to really be that popular at Lawndale nor do the other female students care that much about her. Aside from Daria, Brittnay and the cheerleaders are never shown interacting with Sandi nor does Jodie ever have anything to do with her. Which makes sense because of how shallow, obnoxious, and manipulative she is. Sandi's so-called "popularity" seems to only exist within the Fashion Club, and Sandi on some level is aware of it. She's only the AlphaBitch of the Fashion Club, juxtaposed with YesMan Tiffany and BrokenBird Stacy feeding her ego.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Her two younger brothers are Lawndale's resident [[EnfantTerrible Enfant Terribles]], and whether locking her out of the house during snowfall or giving embarrassing pictures of her to [[TheRival Quinn]], whom they [[HeadTurningBeauty adore]], the pair seize every opportunity to frustrate Sandi.
* BookDumb: Though she's not a great student, Sandi is excellent at playing politics and manipulating others. She also has a surprisingly large vocabulary and correctly uses her terminology.
* CharacterCatchphrase: When interacting with Quinn, she'll sometimes say "''Gee, Quinn''".
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: She was actually pretty nice to Quinn in earlier episodes, as opposed to their heated rivalry throughout the rest of the series.
* ControlFreak:
** Any opportunity to control the Fashion Club or her own social standing, she would take, even throwing a party on the night Quinn organizes a dance, for the popular boys.
** Overall, the Fashion Club seems to exist solely for her to have a microcosm of popularity she can control and exploit by keeping people like Quinn (who could potentially usurp her standing), Tiffany (who will support the strongest personality in the room), and Stacy (who she can terrify into submission) close to her. When juxtaposed against girls like Daria, Sandi's nowhere near as smart or intimidating as she thinks, so she'd rather build herself up against girls she believes are truly beneath her instead of trying to bring down anyone else. It's implied she eventually disbanded the club after the rest of the girls quit because she was afraid she wouldn't be able to find anyone else willing to submit to her authority.
** "Is It Fall Yet?" had revealed the entire Fashion Club intending to get enrolled in the same college, and when Quinn reveals the scores on their practice tests weren't high enough to get in, Sandi responds "So we'll go somewhere else." It's pretty clear Sandi wanted to make sure she didn't lose her standing among Quinn and the others and would've probably made sure they all went to the same college to repeat the Fashion Club's hierarchy.
* DependingOnTheWriter: Just how much Sandi seems to resent/despise Quinn depends a ''lot'' on the writer. While in the [[CharacterizationMarchesOn earlier episodes]] she's fairly nice towards her, the later seasons still have episodes where she doesn't even subtly make jabs at Quinn.
* DirtyCoward: A non-physical example, but for all her obnoxious egotism Sandi doesn't have the nerve to try and intimidate anyone outside the Fashion Club. She planned to approach Daria about Quinn "becoming a brain," but was too flustered to actually speak to her. Daria didn't say ''anything'' until Sandi left. Likewise, in "Lucky Strike" when Daria fills in as a teacher, Sandi tries to pressure Quinn to get Daria to give them good grades instead of daring to approach Daria in person.
* DrivenByEnvy: Some episodes made clear that her recurring antagonism towards Quinn is motivated by the constant positive attention she often receives from other male Lawndale students.
* TheFashionista: President of the Fashion Club, whose purpose is to critique the fashions of their peers.
* {{Foil}}: Seems to embody a version of Quinn who uses her intelligence for vindictive ends, rather than doing better in school. She also would not be above giving fashion advice that would eliminate the competition while Quinn genuinely gives fashion advice to people to help flatter their appearance more (case in point, Daria in "Road Worrier" and the obese Mrs. Johannson in "Psycho Therapy").
* ForTheEvulz: Sandi's at her worst in "Daria Dance Party" when she remembers a bad experience planning a dance in middle school, and ropes Quinn into heading the planning committee for a dance at Lawndale High. She then has the Fashion Club turn on Quinn and purposefully plans a party the same night as the dance all in an effort to screw with Quinn with no provocation at all.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric
* FreudianExcuse: From the brief flashback seen in "Daria Dance Party" it's easier to believe that Sandi's controlling behavior stems from being raised by a perfectionist mother.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: It's pretty clear no one else in the Fashion Club or even the rest of Lawndale High seems to really like Sandi that much because of her horrible attitude. The boys only pay attention to her because she's attractive, while Quinn's frequently at odds with her, Stacy's terrified of her, and Tiffany has no particular allegiance to anyone unless it was worthwhile. When it looked like Sandi was leaving the Fashion Club in "Fat Like Me," Stacy and Tiffany were practically overjoyed at the thought of her being gone.
* HollywoodPudgy: Invoked in "Fat Like Me," when Sandi puts on a few pounds after breaking her leg, the rest of the Fashion Club is immediately horrified. Of course, Sandi [[HoistByHisOwnPetard brought it on herself by instituting a Fashion Club weight limit just before the accident]].
-->'''Quinn:''' Now swim, you cow! Swim!
* HypocriticalHumor: During "Is It Fall Yet?" she gets frustrated when David refuses to let her continue their tutoring session at the mall, exclaiming "You, academics, aren't very understanding of the pressures facing NORMAL people." Sandi has little to no ability to tell her narcissistic attitude, her borderline rivalry with Quinn, and her seeming obsession with destroying Stacy's will, is ''far'' from normal.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Sandi often resorts to twisting arguments to help her case, not that it serves her in any way since she is terrible at using complex words correctly.
** Sandi protests about why she failed an essay where she copied an entire paragraph of an assigned book, arguing that since all words already exist, she is just using words that exist, just like the ones in the book.
** Every time she wants to throw Quinn under the boss, she latches on what Quinn implied by "not saying stuff". When Quinn gives a faint compliment to Brooke's nose, she tries to twist it by saying that Quinn has "high standards".When Quinn responds that she took her time to think her answer, Sandi twists it to make it look like Quinn said "they don't think and are insincere with their compliments".
* ItsAllAboutMe: The Fashion Club exists solely so she can have a permanent position of power and rank among the other popular girls in Lawndale High outside of the cheerleaders and Jodie, and she frequently browbeats if not forces Quinn, Tiffany, and Stacy to adhere to her standards under subtle and not-so-subtle threats and manipulation.
* {{Jerkass}}: Sandi and her mother are the only main or recurring characters who are intentionally mean to those around without provocation who are smart enough to understand what they are doing and are given few if any redeeming characteristics throughout the show.
* KickTheDog: She goes out of her way to assert her dominance by being needlessly cruel to Quinn and Stacy through manipulative, backhanded compliments when she's not deliberately terrifying Stacy. She's especially nasty to Stacy during ''Stacy's birthday'' until Stacy finally wishes Sandi would shut up.
* LeanAndMean: A statuesque AlphaBitch. Although she's [[DownplayedTrope only slightly]] taller than her friends.
-->'''Quinn''': I almost bought that exact same sweater, but something told me not to.
-->'''Sandi''': Could that something be a mirror? Because a sweater like this only looks good on a very ''tall'' and ''lean'' figure.
* LikeMotherLikeDaughter: Sandi and her mother Linda are almost exactly alike, both in looks and personality. Linda and Helen even have the same kind of antagonistic relationship that Sandi and Quinn do.
* LovableAlphaBitch: In the show's GrandFinale, Sandi seems to change her ways (mostly) and takes her first steps as one of these.
* ManipulativeBitch: Browbeats the whole Fashion Club to her bidding and often takes advantage of her looks and influence to get what she wants. As the seasons went on Sandi's control started to slip, especially regarding Quinn and Stacy.
* PetTheDog:
** Seems to care a great deal about her cat Fluffy...enough to go to Daria for advice and pay her ten bucks, anyway. She ''does'' care about the safety of her friends.
** In the Paintball episode when the fashion club members accidentally shoot each other (cause they couldn't make out that it was Sandi due to the goggles), Sandi points out that the goggles, as stupid looking as they are, are for their ''safety''.
** Subverted in "Fire," wherein a bellhop is giving Quinn all sorts of handouts. Sandi points out how suspicious it was that the bellhop knows where Quinn is, and gives her the idea she's being stalked. It's painfully obvious Sandi's doing this out of jealousy, but it turns out she was right and Quinn ''was'' being stalked.
* PopularIsDumb: BookDumb, at least, as she's certainly not getting on the honor roll but she knows the way to manipulate people.
* TheRival: To Quinn, when it comes to popularity and authority in the fashion club.
%% * SmugSnake: Whenever she plays the villain, it rarely works out.
* TeensAreMonsters: Sandi really enjoys keeping Stacy under her thumb and destroying Quinn's reputation more than could be considered mentally healthy. It's entirely likely the reason the Fashion Club only has four members is that no other girl at Lawndale is willing to be around Sandi.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Of the fashion club, she's the most openly antagonistic. Quinn is not a saint either but shows her LovableAlphaBitch traits more often, and is not as mean as Sandi.
* TookALevelInJerkass: At the beginning of the series, Sandi was actually a lot nicer to Quinn and the rest of the Fashion Club. Then came "Too Cute," and it seems the minute Sandi got the sense that the boys of Lawndale were more interested in Quinn than in her, Sandi immediately shifted gears and started finding ways to keep Quinn and any other potential threat to her popularity under her heel.
* ToxicFriendInfluence: She clearly brings out the worst in Quinn, and Quinn's terrified of exhibiting her HiddenDepths thanks to Sandi expressing disapproval or threatening to humiliate Quinn should she ever act like a "Brain."
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: She talks in a ValleyGirl dialect with an accent that comes out like an exaggerated (even strangulated) Baltimorean, enhanced by her stern, monotone delivery.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: The main basis for Quinn and Sandi's relationship is to make sure the other doesn't become more popular. At least, it’s this on Sandi’s end.

A Fashion Club member who is as brain-dead as she is slimy--she plays both sides of any conflict between Sandi and Quinn so whoever wins, she'll be on the winning side. If not the dumbest character on the show, Tiffany is easily the most self-absorbed one.
----
* AmbiguousSituation: There's a lot of speculation about Tiffany's background. She looks Asian but has a western Double-barrelled name (which normally applies to HappilyAdopted children or mixed-race families). Her parents never show up since instead of having her mother on the mother-daughter runway, she shows up with a hired model to replace her, adding more questions as to whether her parents are neglectful, doting, or she has two fathers instead.
* AscendedExtra: Referred to as "Popular Girl #2" in early scripts. Her incongruous name is the result of the writers picking it for her out of the four different Tiffanies (the others being Duke, Hodges, and Fairchild) the security guard mentions on the guest list of Brittany's party in ''The Invitation''.
* AsianAirhead: An Asian girl and quite possibly the dumbest person in the series, though Kevin gives her a run for her money.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: In "Is it fall yet?", when she pays more attention to putting on her makeup... and then gets distracted by a toaster.
--> "This toaster is ''sooo'' shiny!"
* BetaBitch: She is usually there to back up Sandi's power trips.
* BrainlessBeauty: The dumbest character of the Fashion Club; she, literally, agreed with whoever spoke last, lost her place on a piece of paper three sentences in, and just so you know, that isn't how fast she speaks, that's how fast she thinks.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** In the first season, her lethargic speech pattern didn't exist. She still spoke in that breathy voice, but it was at a normal pace.
** During the second season, it seemed like Tiffany was working Sandi and Quinn against each other. This was dropped as her stupidity became more prominent.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: What few thoughts pass through her brain make little sense to anyone outside of her skull.
-->"This toaster's reeeeeally shiiinyyy..."
* TheDitz: The least intelligent of the group. She's always clueless and speaks very slowly.
* DoesThisMakeMeLookFat:
-->'''Quinn:''' ''YOU'RE NOT FREAKING FAT, OKAY?!''
* DullSurprise: She has a very stoic and unexpressive look on her face, it's rare for her to express surprise, and when she does it's subdued.
* ExtremeDoormat: She's barely intelligent enough to be ''sapient'', so she just goes along with the last person who spoke.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic
* {{Foil}}: To Stacy. Both are followers of either Quinn or Sandi, but while Stacy eventually grows a spine, Tiffany often follows whatever is more convenient for her. Stacy is also organized to the point of OCC, while Tiffany can barely "think". This is better illustrated when both of them are trying to decide who gets to wear a dress both have in their closets, which shows that Stacy has low self-esteem in her own image, while Tiffany is self-obsessed. While Stacy makes a list of reasons why she deserves it more (among those reasons, Stacy lists all her personal physical flaws while also arguing that Tiffany can look good in anything, so she should let her have that one dress), Tiffany's only argument is that she likes it.
* HiddenDepths:
** Well, it counts as "depth" for her. In ''Fat Like Me'', the Fashion Club invites boys to a meeting, and the girls talk about tank tops, while the boys think the conversation is about actual tanks. When the boys mention "the enemy" Tiffany accepts that as part of the conversation about clothes, not because of her usual stupidity, but because that's how she thinks of the whole grooming and beauty thing.
--->'''Jeffy:''' ''I'm talking about war!''\
'''Tiffany:''' ''So am I.''
** Deep, deep down she is genuinely implied to like Quinn more than Sandi. ''Fat Like Me'' showed she wasn't in a hurry for Sandi to return to the club, and seemed just as upset as Stacy when Quinn announced she was leaving. This is seen again in ''Lucky Strike'', where she and Stacy side with Quinn admitting that they already knew Daria was her sister, but only played along to be polite.
* {{Narcissist}}: In "The Story of 'D'", we see that she has a poster of ''herself'' in her room.
* OpinionFlipFlop: She can easily turn into a YesMan for Sandi, turn her back, and agree with Quinn on everything Sandi disapproved, and so on.
* PopularIsDumb: She's jaw-dropping gorgeous, and popular amongst her male peers for obvious reasons. But she has no actual personality, motivation, or ability to form her own opinions: she just agrees with whatever her friends tell her to.
* SimpletonVoice: She speaks as fast as she thinks: ''very slowly'' in her signature monotone voice.
* UglyGuysHotDaughter: Her Mother is implied to be unattractive (or simply not up to the standards of the Fashion Club or just pales in comparison to Helen, Linda Griffin, and Brittany's stepmom), so Tiffany hires a tall, thin, African American model to pose as her Mom for a fashion show asking "for the prettiest model".
* VerbalTic: It's nigh impossible for her to talk without pausing every two or three words and drawing out the last syllable of said two or three words.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: She'll turn on Sandi and Quinn without batting an eye. Probably because she's admiring how shiny the toaster is.
* YesMan: "The Daria Hunter" and "Fair Enough" are great examples of this.

Fashion Club Secretary, and the most sympathetic of the group. A neurotic pushover, Stacy is constantly bullied and manipulated by Sandi, who threatens to kick her out of the club on a near-daily basis. Will burst into tears at the drop of a hat. Of all the club members, she seems to be closest to Quinn, who she looks up to.
----
* AscendedExtra: A minor character during the course of the series, but she becomes more well-developed in season five, where she got an actual recurring subplot in several episodes.
* BreakTheCutie: Attempted multiple times due to her fragile emotional state. If Stacy thinks she's done something wrong she becomes hysteric.
* ButtMonkey: Usually verbally abused and bullied by Sandi.
* CharacterDevelopment: The last season seemed to have been dedicated to showing Stacy develop more of a backbone and personality, culminating in the finale of ''Is It College Yet?'' where she decides to take a sabbatical from the Fashion Club rather than demean herself once more to please Sandi.
* TheCutie: Compared to her friends, she's very sweet and shy.
* TheDitz: When she applies herself, she's probably the smartest of the group, next to Quinn, but has a lot of self-esteem issues that hold her back from trying and keep her dumb.
* TheDogBitesBack: A weird case in ''Is It College Yet?'' At her birthday party, Sandi kept talking and interrupting her, so for her birthday wish Stacy mentally wished that Sandi would shut up. Sandi pressures her about what she wished for, and Stacy says, "Oh, nothing, it didn't come true anyway." But a few days later Sandi contracts laryngitis and can't talk, which leads Stacy to believe she put some sort of curse on Sandi, and she's instantly filled with regret.
* ExtremeDoormat: She's submissive and takes a lot of verbal abuse from Sandi, though she started to grow a spine in the final season.
* {{Foil}}: To Tiffany.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic
* GirlishPigtails: Stacy has braided pigtails.
* GrewASpine: Part of her CharacterDevelopment in the final season.
* HiddenDepths:
** She's implied to actually ''not'' be as BookDumb as the other girls - or Quinn. During "Is it Fall yet?", the tutor recognizes that her main problem is how neurotic and ProneToTears she is.
** As demonstrated in one episode, she's a surprisingly good actress. She makes it seem as if Upchuck is in actual danger and it's her fault - only to ''instantly'' drop her mask and comment on how gullible everyone is.
** When Sandi takes a sabbatical from the Fashion Club and makes Quinn do it, Stacey ''is'' actually shown to be able to come up with a meeting agenda and shows a genuine interest ''in'' fashion.
* InnocentBetaBitch: She doesn't have a mean bone in her body and is also very insecure and emotional. Not only that, but Sandi constantly belittles her for every little thing which brings her to tears.
* NervousWreck: Extremely insecure and neurotic, especially due to her fanatic paranoia of Sandi's wrath.
* NiceGirl: She is easily the sweetest member of the Fashion Club. She has a kind heart and speaks in a cute voice.
* OddFriendship: With Upchuck, when she agrees to be his stage assistant for his magic show.
* PetTheDog: She is the only Fashion Club member who didn't feel offended by a caricature of the group, and she even genuinely liked the picture (she is drawn the prettiest of them). While the others wanted to either sue the artist or burn the picture, Stacy managed to save the drawing and keep it safe in her room.
* ProneToTears: Sandi sort of enforced this mentality on her, especially at the beginning of the series where it was incredibly easy to make her cry.
* ShrinkingViolet: Because of her low self-esteem, she tends to be a shy pushover in contrast to Sandi's dominant personality.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Later episodes indicate that she's more intelligent than she lets on. In "Is It Fall Yet?" she is seen to have the second-highest PSAT score of the entire Fashion Club, with only Quinn doing better.
* TokenGoodTeammate: The nicest of the Fashion Club, and less narcissistic than her friends.

Collectively known as the Three J's, they are three boys who sycophantically seek Quinn's attention and approval, usually falling all over themselves to do or get whatever she even broadly hints that she wants. Joey, Jeffy and Jamie are all members of the school's football team.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: "One J At A Time" has Quinn cycling through them in the hopes of finding a steady boyfriend. However, despite their prominence not much is shed about their individual personalities save perhaps Jeffy helping Jake and Tom catch the squirrel that's been raiding Jake's garbage.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: A rare [[{{GenderFlip}} male example]]: Jamie is blonde, Joey is brunette, and Jeffy is an auburn redhead.
* CockFight: The three occasionally have gotten into fistfights, with other boys and certainly amongst each other, for Quinn's attention.
* TheDividual: They are also known as the "Three Js". Daria even refers to the three of them as "Joey, Jeffy, or Jamie" regardless of who she is talking to.
* DumbJock: Though not ''as'' dumb as Kevin, they are not exactly book smart. Although in "Lucky Strike" they actually manage to learn enough about ''Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet'' that the three of them get good grades on the exam. This is taking into consideration that on Jeffy's test, he wrote about how he thought Mercutio "had a thing" for Romeo and Daria gave him a B because she felt he argued his point well enough even if she didn't agree with him. This is either an example that they aren't quite as dumb as they look, or Daria's just that good of a teacher.
* DumbassHasAPoint:
** When the three are invited to have a debate on fashion with Tiffany and Stacy, they argue that camouflage patterns are, military speaking, supposed to make soldiers blend with the background and not grab attention, and the fashion trend of making it stand out doesn't make any sense.
** Invoked with Jeffy's essay test. Daria doesn't agree with his argument that Mercutio had a thing for Romeo, but apparently, he used good arguments to defend it and earns a B on his test.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** There are at least two ways to break the love spell Quinn holds over these boys (and most others): Don't ask them to help plan a school dance ("Daria Dance Party"), and ''do not leave them to wait in a closed car, especially during the summer!!'' ("Legends of the Mall"). Presumably, any attempt to make them quit the football team would be a third deal-breaker, but Quinn was at least smart enough to not even ''try'' doing that.
** When Quinn starts acting like a beatnik, nobody can stand it and want the old Quinn back, and they also have the idea of asking Daria for help. Fortunately for them, Daria was in the mood to help them and they go along with her plan without any protest.
* HiddenDepths: Apparently, Joey and Jamie are familiar enough with The Canterbury Tales to know how different "The Pardoner's Tale" is than "The Knight's Tale".
* HopelessSuitor: All three of them only exist to eternally pine after Quinn and do errands for her in the hopes she'll pick one of them as her boyfriend.
* {{Jerkass}}: Often implied, because of how they secretly talk about Daria, Jane or Upchuck. There's also the fact that they'd gladly throw each other under the bus if it netted them more attention from Quinn. "Fair Enough" has Jamie and Joey deliberately giving Jeffy the wrong lines to read during Mr. O'Neill's play, simply because he's performing with Quinn.
* OnlyOneName: Joey and Jeffy. Jamie's last name is White, as revealed in "Fair Enough."
* RecurringExtra: They are very rarely seen apart, and are usually not seen without Quinn or the football team.
* RunningGag: Early in the series, Jamie has been called [[AccidentalMisnaming other names that start with "J"]] such as Jimmy and Jeremy. On "Fair Enough," Jamie happily declares, "You got my name right!" just before Mr. [=DeMartino=] (as The Black Knight) knocks him down.
%% * SingleTargetSexuality: All three towards Quinn.
* SimpletonVoice: Jamie. Unlike Joey and Jeffy, who speak normally, Jamie has a slower tone. Daria even makes a [[StealthInsult sarcastic remark]] about his monotone while reading Romeo and Juliet.
--->'''Daria''': Thanks, "Joey, Jeffy, or Jamie". [[SarcasmMode Lawrence Olivier in his present state couldn't have done better]]\
'''Jamie''': [[SarcasmBlind Cool!]]
* TooDumbToLive: In "Antisocial Climbers", The Three J's bring Quinn's three bags worth of cute knick-knacks, leaving the survival gear at the buses.
* VitriolicBestBuds: They are friends almost always seen together, despite their constant competition for Quinn's favors, which sometimes leads to fistfights.

Ted is a home-schooled guy who recently decides to enroll in Lawndale High and joins the yearbook committee.
----
* CameraFiend: He is in charge of editing and taking pictures for the yearbook. In his last appearance, he takes a picture of Daria and Tom (who weren't even dating) as a couple photo for the school's parade.
* GuyOfTheWeek: He is teased as a possible boyfriend to Daria, but it ends before it even begins. After that, Ted is only seen in two episodes across the rest of the show.
--->'''Ted''': "To be honest, Daria, I think maybe you were right. We should keep our friendship on a strictly yearbook level."\
'''Daria''': "Wait a minute. Are you blowing me off?"\
'''Ted''': "Well, my parents warned me that kids in conventional school can be kind of...shallow."\
'''Daria''': "You think I'm shallow?"\
'''Ted''': "You sort of remind me of that really popular girl I've seen around...Quinn, I think. Do you know her? You'd probably get along.
* HomeschooledKids: He spent his entire childhood as a homeschooled kid, and still his parents are unsure of sending him to a public high school since he lacks social skills.
* JackOfAllTrades: Ted is insanely good in a lot of uncommon skills, like playing the Viola di Gamba, knows how to make jewelry, is good at photography, has good grades as a result of being homeschooled, has taught himself to fight with swords (by reading Medieval manuscripts on swordplay), and has practiced isometric exercises, which he can use in self-defense
* MundaneObjectAmazement: He gets really excited when he tastes bubblegum for the first time. The following day, Ted's parents go to complain to the Morgendorfers about Daria giving him gum, [[ComicalOverreacting as if she gave him drugs]].
* OddFriendship: At the end of his debut episode, he ends up befriending Robert, who used to bully him.

A member of the football team.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: He keeps calling Daria "Darcy" during an entire episode.
* BullyingADragon: He is the Dragon in this case. Kevin gets angry when Brittany kisses him to get Kevin jealous and picks up a fight with him. Robert ends up breaking Kevin's jaw.
* NiceGuy: He is very respectful to Brittany when she chooses him as her date for the school dance, and he only goes out with her because he wasn't in town when all the football players agreed to avoid Brittany for respect to Kevin.
* JerkassBall: He is overall a nice guy. The only episode where he is shown to be a bully is in Ted's introduction because Ted was pushing the idea of giving fewer pages to the sports clubs in the yearbook to make place for other groups outside of the jocks, and yet he ends up befriending him.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Since Kevin and Brittany broke up (again), the football team promised Kevin to not go out with Brittany, and Robert was on vacation during that time, so Brittany took advantage and asked him to the dance.
* OddFriendship: At the end of Ted's debut episode, he ends up befriending him.

[[folder:Brooke]]
A girl who had a nose job to impress the Fashion Club.
----
* DamnedByFaintPraise: When she shows up with a very tiny nose, all the other girls are raving about it by saying it's "very cute". When Quinn says that it's just plain "cute", Brooke takes the "just" as bad, not helped by Sandi using the opportunity to add more fuel against Quinn. When the others decide to ask Daria as a more neutral party, Daria replies [[SarcasmMode "Don't worry, it will grow"]]. Brooke promptly gets a worried expression.
* FacialHorror: It's never shown, but according to Tiffany and Stacy, who went running to tell Quinn while panicking about their own noses, Brooke had a nasal prolapse in the middle of a conversation, and according to the ER cousin of another girl, it was so bad her brain could almost be seen, and her lips melted with the fat from her upper lip somehow going to her bottom lip. According to Quinn, Brooke's face looks like a bulldog and had to be rushed to a plastic surgeon in Belgium to repair the damage.
* IJustWantToBeBeautiful: According to Quinn, Brooke used to be very plain-looking before her cosmetic surgeries. She started to get a lot of procedures just to be accepted into the Fashion Club, to the point she even makes the group want to have plastic surgery as well.
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: When Brooke arrives at school with her extreme makeover, she addresses all the Fashion Club members by name... and then refers to Quinn as "everyone".
* PlasticBitch: She wants to get into the Fashion Club so bad that she not only had her nose done. In the span of a week, she also got liposuction and the doctor even put the fat from her waist into her lips instead of collagen. On top of it, she gets a new haughty attitude and refuses to greet Quinn by her name (presumably she was still resentful of Quinn for not praising her nose enough), and even gets excited when Sandi suggests that she might give her Quinn's spot in the Fashion Club. After the surgery ends up badly and she has to go overseas to fix her face, she returns to school but isn't admitted to the Fashion Club. According to Quinn, it's because she dresses like a tramp.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: As explained in DerailingLoveInterests, Evan seems like a down-to-earth guy for snarking at the Fashion Club, but he only shows his true colors when he questions why Jane is still friends with Daria.
* DerailingLoveInterests: At first he seems like a cool guy who isn't afraid of standing up to the Fashion Club when Sandi starts passing judgment on girls who practice sports. Jane gets over her crush on him when he is revealed to be as bad as the other jocks.
* GuyOfTheWeek: He is only seen in the episode "See Jane Run".

Lawndale's English teacher. Mr. O'Neill is a very, ''very'' sensitive man, constantly trying to connect with his students and failing hilariously. Is often seen as Daria's writing mentor (as seen in "The Lost Girls" and "Write Where It Hurts"). Is in an OddFriendship with the severely stressed-out Mr. [=DeMartino=] and in an odder sexual relationship with the man-hating Ms. Barch.
----
* BerserkButton: O'Neill takes the theatre ''very'' seriously, and expects the same of those who sign up for school plays. Anything less, and you ''will'' have the rare privilege of seeing him get angry. One can only imagine the verbal lashings awaiting Kevin, Quinn, and Jeffy after the fair locked up for the night.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: There was an early RunningGag where Mr. O'Neill, despite his endless concern for his students, could never remember any of their names. The writers seemed to realize that the joke could only be funny so many times and dropped it after a couple of episodes.
* DumbassHasAPoint:
** A mild case, with him being more unaware of others' feelings, as he does force Daria to do extracurriculars while considering himself her (unsolicited) mentor, and even submits her essay to a contest without her consent. But considering how Daria eventually didn't make it to Bromwell despite the Sloane recommendation letter, Timothy probably had a point about Daria and extracurriculars, and had she gone out of her way to do those activities of her own accord, Mr. O'Neill might not have been pushy and overbearing about it.
** In the last episode "Boxing Daria", Mr. O'Neill keeps insisting Daria give guided tours to the future freshmen as a way to have an extracurricular, and Daria is offended because she thinks that he is doing it to have her as "the misfit token". Mr. O'Neill concedes it, but not for the reasons she thinks, it's because he wants to prove to Daria herself that she doesn't need to shield herself all the time and proof to the kids like her that anyone can fit in Lawndale High. After Daria solves her own personal issues, she finally agrees to do it.
* ExtremeDoormat: Especially around his friend, the high-strung history teacher, Mr. [=DeMartino=], and his lover, the [[DoesNotLikeMen misandristic]] science teacher, Ms. Barch, who fell for him after O'Neill inadvertently [[DefrostingIceQueen comforted her]] when she went on yet another rant about being divorced.
* {{Foil}}: Mr. O'Neil and Mr. [=DeMartino=] are both nice exaggerations of 90s-00s teachers. O'Neil is constantly happy, uses positive messages/encouragement, and tries to sugar-coat everything so they wouldn't be offended or discouraged. [=DeMartino=] on the other hand, is ''constantly'' angry and is ''much'' stricter on the students.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic
* GeniusDitz: It's obvious O'Neill's ideas about teaching usually don't turn out quite well. However, he's had a couple of highlights during the show: he was the one who suggested Quinn find a tutor during "Is it Fall Yet?". In "Write Where it Hurts", he gave Daria an opportunity to challenge herself and even gave sensible advice later: when one has no idea of what kind of story to write, placing some arbitrary limitations can help to narrow it down (it's played as useless in the scene, but actually makes a lot of sense).
* GoshDarnItToHeck: He's not very comfortable with swearing. He once apologized for saying "darn" in front of the class.
* GranolaGirl: {{Gender Flip}}ped. Daria and Jane note that his studio apartment is full of incense, aromatic candles, dream catchers, handicrafts, ''and a shrine with Mrs. Barch's photo''.
* HippieTeacher: not as much as [[WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButthead Mr. Van Driessen]]. When Daria and Jane visit his apartment, they notice the decor: full of candles, meditation stones, incense, a "Save the Whales" bumper sticker, and many other pieces of furniture in that style.
* ItsAllAboutMe: A more subtle example compared to some of the more openly narcissistic characters on the show. Despite his spinelessness, he has a tendency to refuse to listen to anyone else's point of view. He would often spin around something Daria was saying into something completely different, such as in ''Cafe Disaffecto''. He would also try to force certain students, most notably Daria, into taking part in activities regardless of whether or not they want to, with or without their consent. In the end, what really matters is not what his students may or may not want... but ''what he wants for them''.
* LoveMartyr: Zigzagged. Mr. O'Neill does have a problem with Mrs. Barch's aggressiveness (on "The F Word," he begs Janet to be more discreet about their secret relationship -- just as he's being dragged away to the closet that Mrs. Barch jimmied the lock so the two could make out in before the maids come in for work), but most of the time, he actually enjoys it.
* OddFriendship: With Mr. [=DeMartino=].
* PitbullDatesPuppy: The timid puppy to Ms. Barch's snarling, rabid pitbull. [[spoiler:Tried to be more assertive to break off his wedding to her (at the advice of Mr. [=DeMartino=]), only for Barch to fall for O'Neill's new assertive side along with the passive one (after she gave [=DeMartino=] a black eye)]].
* PsychologistTeacher: He tries very hard to be this, but he's so out of touch with others, especially kids and teens, he fails miserably.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Despite not having any say when Ms. Li is involved, Mr. O'Neill tries to be a very reasonable teacher to his students, going out of his way to encourage his students to go out of their comfort zone, even when his methods might fail big time. In "Arts 'n Crass", he tries to keep his word and let Daria and Jane drop the art competition if it wasn't for Ms. Li playing dirty and crushing him.
%% * RedOniBlueOni: Blue to [=DeMartino=]'s and Barch's reds.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Sensitive Guy to Mr. [=DeMartino's=] Manly Man. He is more open about his feelings and doesn't repress his need to cry openly, while Mr. [=DeMartino=] tries to hide better his own weaknesses.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Constantly refers to himself as Daria's "mentor", when a lot of the time his guidance is either ignored or counter-productive.

Lawndale's long-suffering history teacher. A bug-eyed, constantly stressed, somewhat unstable man who spends most of his time yelling at everything. He is in a constant state of anger, likely brought on by the ignorance of his students.
----
* AcCENTUponTheWrongSylLABle: He has a PARTICULAR way of [=TALKing=], where he randomly EMPHASIZES words or [=syLLABles=] in this manner.
* BerserkButton: EVERYTHING. But usually people like Kevin and their unimpregnable ignorance. He actually seems to like the few students who seem to ''learn'' anything from him, such as Daria and post-CharacterDevelopment Quinn. But yeah, Kevin and Brittany...not so much.
* ButtMonkey: Ms. Barch has beaten him up several times, a classic rock DJ gave him a heart attack ''and'' broke his knee during a school-sponsored roller hockey game, he's seen two of his friends (the unnamed childhood friend from "Anti-Social Climbers" and Mr. O'Neill) get married to women he loathes (his mom and Mrs. Barch respectively), he once had to teach a sewing class as part of a deal on his teacher's contract, he grew up with a negligent mom who cared more about the men she dated than her own son, he lost his car in a card game, he was forced to go on a casino cruise despite the fact that he's a recovering gambling addict, he has to deal with moronic students like Kevin and Brittany on a daily basis -- it's a wonder he was never committed to a mental hospital. The only times [=DeMartino=] ever had a ThrowTheDogABone moment were [[spoiler:when he forced Ms. Li to sign the new teacher's contract that promised a 10% raise in salary, and the events of Is It Fall Yet?]].
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** In his first appearance, he acted like a [[Franchise/HarryPotter muggle version of Snape]], berating the class for not answering his question, then berating Daria for trying to give the answer. While later episodes still have him snapping at stupidity from his students, he shows a lot more respect to bright students, such as telling Daria [[ActuallyPrettyFunny how he's amused by]] [[DeadpanSnarker her sarcastic attitude]]. The final movie has him loudly cheering "You go girlfriend!" when Daria wins the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.
** ''Is It Fall Yet'' had him lash out at the class on account of "most of you didn't learn a thing all year!", which can very much be a two-sided jab against both "you refused to take the class seriously" ''and'' "you knew all of the planned material in advance", either of which negates a teacher's purpose (his conflict for the film). Made particularly clear when Daria is the one who replies to this comment with "I learned to sleep sitting up."-implying that she grew so bored by his inability to teach anything that legitimately challenges her that she stopped paying attention (and yet still managed to pass).
* DamnedByFaintPraise: By his standards, telling Daria she "makes him want to kill himself a little less than the sausages that call themselves her classmates" actually is a compliment.
* EnragedByIdiocy: He has absolutely no patience with the ignorance of any of his students, especially Brittany and Kevin.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Sure, he is a jaded History teacher that has lost faith in most of his students learning something from him, but he really ''loses it'' the moment Ms. Li forces him to give a class using ''an Ultra Cola can-shaped globe''. He is seen having a big rage fit inside the empty classroom.
* EvilLaugh: The one time he actually laughs. He ''is'' on a gambling spree at the time, though. He actually gets another evil laugh early on at the beginning of the paintball episode after giving the implication that he's going to enjoy taking shots at his students.
* EyeScream:
** One eye bulges constantly, especially when he's demonstrating his VerbalTic. In one of the "bloopers" of "Is It Fall Yet?" it actually pops out of his socket.
** In ''Is It College Yet?'', Ms. Barch punches him in his good eye (read: the eye that doesn't bulge when he's stressed or demonstrating his VerbalTic).
** Upon overhearing about Mrs. Barch and Mr. O'Neil's engagement, his good eye bulges out as well.
* {{Foil}}:
** Mr.
** He is this to Daria as well. While both are continually frustrated by the stupidity of other students, their approaches to dealing with it are complete opposites ([=DeMartino's=] constant overreacting to Daria's snarking, which he even occasionally enjoys from her).
%% * FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Cynic
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Choleric
* HairTriggerTemper: He has a severe lack of patience, especially towards Kevin.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: According to "The Daria Hunter," [=DeMartino=] lived with his "strange, twisted" neighbors because his mom didn't want any of her dates to know she was a single mother, and like Daria's dad Jake, he was sent to military school. He also had a best friend who married his mother (according to the season four episode "Anti-Social Climbers").
* {{Jerkass}}: Constantly assaulted verbally, and occasionally physically, his students. Especially Kevin.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Mainly towards his smarter students like Daria, and Mr. O'Neill with their OddFriendship below. He is a bitter History teacher, but he has a soft spot for Daria for being the most intelligent student he has,
* MadEye: His left eye tends to bulge whenever he gets angry, and on rare occasions ''both eyes'' get bigger when the situation is beyond him, especially when he overhears Ms. Barch roping Mr. O'Neill into marriage.
* MisplacedKindergartenTeacher: In a weird sort of way. He doesn't fit the traditional trope description, but the young summer campers in "Is It Fall Yet?" latch onto him and declare him "cool", indicating that he would've fared better if he had been a kindergarten or elementary school teacher, getting to the kids when their minds are fresh, moldable, and eager to learn, rather than toward the end of their education and after years of taking blows to the head during football practice. Of course given his current, rapidly deteriorating mental state, it's probably far too late.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His voice sounds very much like Creator/AlPacino in LargeHam mode, and his strange inflections are reminiscent of Creator/ChristopherWalken.
* OddFriendship: With Mr. O'Neill as seen in "Just Add Water," "Murder She Snored," and the movies "Is It Fall Yet?" and "Is It College Yet?"
* OhCrap: He gets easily enraged at just about everything around him, but a surefire way to tell when he's genuinely upset about something ''really'' bad? ''Both'' of his eyes bulge outward at the same time, which happens when he's forced to use a globe shaped as a soda can as part of the Ultra Cola contract in "Fizz Ed", and when he overhears Ms. Barch thinking Mr. O'Neill is gonna marry her in "Is It College Yet?"
* ParentalAbandonment: His single mother often kept a secret that he existed from any of her boyfriends, so he was usually sent to the neighbors' house until he got shipped to boarding school. [[KickTheDog On top of that abandonment trauma with her mother, she hooks up with his best friend.]]
* PerpetualFrowner: He ''very rarely'' smiles, and in the rare instances he does, it's a SlasherSmile.
* PetTheDog:
** In "Is it College yet?", Mr. [=DeMartino=] finally admits to Mr. O'Neill that he knows about his secret affair with Ms. Barch and is willing to help him out of the marriage misunderstanding because he considers Timothy his best friend. Mr. O'Neill is so happy and touched that both can't help crying over this.
** On Graduation day, even after Ms. Barch punches him in the eye, he and Mr. O'Neill cheer together for Daria's speech. He is seen genuinely happy and proud of her.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In "Is It Fall Yet?" he loses his cool and chews out a kid who mentions idolizing football players, pointing out in detail his low opinion of football players that no doubt stemmed from dealing with Kevin.
%% * RedOniBlueOni: Red to Mr. O'Neill's blue
* SadistTeacher: He regularly berates and insults his students, ''especially'' Kevin.
** In the pilot episode, he forces Daria to answer a question about what the class was studying despite it being Daria's first day at Lawndale.
** In "The Daria Hunter" and "Fair Enough", he relishes the opportunity to put physical pain on his students.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Manly Man to Mr. O'Neill's Sensitive Guy.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: A lot of his rants against Kevin and Brittany enter this territory. Of course, their lack of ability to understand what he's saying just causes him even further frustration.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Some of his dialogue and his military background imply that he might have fought in Vietnam, which would certainly explain his temperamental imbalance.
* VerbalTic: Random emphasis on words and syllables, sometimes to the point of shouting them depending on how annoyed/angry he is at the time.
%% * WeaksauceWeakness: Fried food and gambling.

Lawndale's science teacher. The biggest man-hater in existence who will compare any man with her ex-husband (who left her after 22 years, or as she called it, "Two decades of legal slavery...") but is attracted to Mr. O'Neill's sensitivity/spinelessness (after Mr. O'Neill let her vent her bitterness over being divorced) and ''definitely'' wears the pants in their relationship.
----
* AffectionateNickname: She regularly refers to Mr. O’Neill as “Skinny”.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Subverted. Ms. Barch stayed an embittered, man-hating divorcee throughout the series, but starting with "The Daria Hunter," she turned off her misandry around Mr. O'Neill. She seemed to have toned down after the two got together, if only because their relationship became her new shtick. Afterward, her sexism seems to become a lot less vicious unless she was specifically upset about something.
* DeadpanSnarker: When Quinn tries to convince Ms. Barch into giving her money for plastic surgery, she has this to say.
-->'''Quinn''': It's not even like I'm doing that for me. I'm doing it to bring honor to the school.\
'''Ms. Barch''': Oh, well then, why don't you apply for a federal grant, dear? Send an inquiry to the U.S. Department of Deluded Adolescents.\
'''Quinn''': Is that E-N-T-E or E-N-T-S?
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the StrawFeminist. Instead of being taken at face value, the show demonstrates that Ms. Barch isn't a feminist so much as she is a raging, violent misandrist ranting about how vile men are simply because she was stuck in a bad marriage (and it's largely implied both sides of the relationship treated each other badly). Rather than being someone Daria would side with, she snarks at Barch's ranting just as much as everyone else.
* DoesNotLikeMen: With the exception of Mr. O'Neill as of season two's "The Daria Hunter." Justified as she was in a marriage with a man who most likely neglected her, cheated on her, and abandoned her. She really takes her misandrist frustrations out on Mr. [=DeMartino=], who reminds her of her ex-husband, and even on people who didn't do anything to deserve her wrath, like Mack.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: As mentioned above in CharacterizationMarchesOn, Mrs. Barch was a lot meaner to men in the episodes prior to "The Daria Hunter." In the later episodes, she was still mean, but since her schtick about hating men shifted to her being in a torrid sexual relationship with Mr. O'Neill, the jokes about her being a misandrist weren't that frequent. Also in the episodes prior to "Too Cute," Ms. Barch mostly ranted about being in a bad marriage and abandoned after 20+ years of marriage. From "Too Cute" on, Ms. Barch has punished her male students for little or no reason (made Kevin ugly for a science project, forced Mack to play a dragon at the school Renaissance fair so kids would beat him up, made Kevin and Mack [[WritingLines write lines]] in study hall, and threatened to punish Upchuck by locking him in a closet [what she calls "Independent Study"]. Also, prior to "The Daria Hunter," Ms. Barch didn't beat up Mr. [=DeMartino=].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She might be unfair, misandrist, violent, and extremely vindictive, but even she can't help feeling depressed when Ms. Li forces her to give a Science lecture with an Ultra Cola-shaped Solar System model, ''which has little soda cans for planets'' and insert Ultracola taglines in the middle of a class about the Periodic Table.
* TheFirstCutIsTheDeepest: Her bitter divorce is the reason why she DoesNotLikeMen (except for Mr. O'Neill).
* TheGhost: Ms. Barch's ex-husband has been mentioned a lot, but never seen, though this could be an AvertedTrope if you believe that [[spoiler:Rock 'n Roll Randy from "The Big House" was Ms. Barch's ex-husband, which would explain why Barch punched him in the stomach and yelled, "It's payback time now, Randy!" She couldn't have done it to defend Mr. [=DeMartino=], as it would be out of character for her man-hating personality. Plus, later episodes reveal that she targets [=DeMartino=] for abuse as well. It's also entirely likely she was referring to the roller hockey game from the previous year.]]
* HairTriggerTemper: She is pretty reasonable to her female students, especially Daria, but if you happen to be a male student, she could punish you just for existing.
* {{Jerkass}}: She is harsher on her male students, to the point of punishing Mack for no reason other than him being male, and is physically violent towards Mr. [=DeMartino=].
* KarmaHoudini: Ms. Barch has gotten away with assaulting Mr. [=DeMartino=] several times, gender discrimination, and fraternizing with a coworker (her fling with Mr. O'Neill. In "Is It College Yet?", Mr. [=DeMartino=] mentioned that Ms. Li has a rule against coworkers starting a sexual/romantic relationship and it's the only rule [=DeMartino=] supports), and getting Mr. [=DeMartino=] arrested (and almost deported) on a false charge. If the show followed real life, Barch would have been fired, arrested, and sued for all she had (if her divorced husband hadn't cleaned her out already).
* MamaBear: Surprisingly, she has ''some'' shades of this buried deeply under her psychotic misandry. In "The F Word," while attending a teacher's conference, Mr. O'Neill is recounting a speaker's lecture on "Planting the seeds of tomorrow into the students of today." Barch misconstrues this as something sexual regarding the students and gets pissed off about the speaker in defense of her students.
-->'''Ms. Barch''': If he ever tried that around any of ''my'' kids, they'd be the LAST DAMN SEEDS HE'D EVER PLANTED!
* MisplacedRetribution: Her bitter divorce left her taking out her anger on any male in proximity. [[ButtMonkey Mr. [=DeMartino=]]] seems to be her favorite target.
* NeverMyFault: Some scenes, particularly in her first appearance, and in the series finale seem to hint that she may have inadvertently driven her ex-husband away, but fails to realize it.
-->'''Mrs. Barch:''' You didn't spend years of your life telling him, again and again, to get his grubby hands off of the remote, quit his damned coughing, stop behaving like an imbecile, only to be tossed into the trash like a broken record!
* PoliticallyMotivatedTeacher: Ms. Barch's hatred of men tends to color her teaching, which is serious considering that she is a Natural Science teacher, and therefore should be clean of any personal bias.
%% * RedOniBlueOni: Shares the 'red' with Mr. [=DeMartino=] when with Mr. O'Neill (blue)
* SadistTeacher: Thanks to her bitter divorce making her hate all men [[note]]except for Mr. O'Neill[[/note]]. Mack especially is afraid of her. She once threatens Charles with 'Independent Study', which apparently involves being locked in the supply closet.
* StrawFeminist: Although she indeed acts exactly like you'd expect from this trope, it deserves mention that no one, including herself, ever claims her misandry is motivated by anything other than resentment of her ex-husband. She's a sexist, not a feminist, and knows it.
* UnreliableNarrator: It's unclear if her bitter divorce was entirely her ex-husband's fault or something mutually toxic since the audience only gets her version of it. It's seen in her personal vendetta against males that she goes against anyone in her sight, even guys who have never done anything to deserve her hatred, like Mack.

Lawndale High's economics teacher and the person in charge of managing the school's budget, which Ms. Li makes into a nearly impossible task by skimming funds for lie detector equipment and satellite jamming equipment. Despite being somewhat childish and known for making incomprehensible chalkboard diagrams, she seems to be one of the saner teachers at the school next to Ms. [=DeFoe=].
----
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In the first season's episode "Malled" her field trip to the mall seems more like an excuse to get out of doing any actual teaching. But come "Partner's Complaint" she creates an assignment that does turn out to be pretty brilliant while being simple enough to understand that someone like Brittany had no trouble figuring out what to do. Kevin, on the other hand, is a different story. She also makes a good point when she explains to Daria that the reason she wanted everyone to work in pairs is that, in adult life, economic transactions are rarely done without considering another's needs.
* TheCobblersChildrenHaveNoShoes: Ironically, Mrs. Bennet (the Economics teacher) is willing to settle down with Ms. Li's offer of just a 0.08% pay hike, free non-dairy creamer for the coffee and "[[StealthInsult Mr. [=DeMartino=] could put away his sewing kit]]"
* ExtremeDoormat: Because of her sweet personality, she barely stands up to others.
** When the model scouts Romonica and Claude rudely interrupt her classroom by laughing loud and obnoxiously at the door, she doesn't impose any authority and leaves them to say whatever they want to her students.
** She barely has any say in anything related to the school administration. When Ms. Li has her at her office to seek advice on what to do with the Ultra Cola contract, Ms. Bennett barely speaks since Ms. Li is only using her to vent, and she has no problem accepting a meager .08% pay hike and free non-dairy creamer. Mr. [=DeMartino=] is having none of it.
* GlurgeAddict: She collects "Fuzzy Wuzzy Wee Bits" along with her husband.
%% * HappilyMarried: Implied to be the case with her husband Herbert, who was never shown on-screen.
* NoodleIncident: She has an implied hatred of pennies.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She is able to explain why a certain assignment is a group project rather than solo in a way that gets Daria to say "Damn, she got me".
* {{Womanchild}}: Only slightly. Besides her bizarre chalkboard diagrams and toy collecting, she seems to like the sound chalk makes when you write on a blackboard with it.
* WomenAreWiser: She's much more rational than the other Lawndale High faculty members and had once created an assignment that even Brittany was able to understand correctly. Compared to Mr. O'Neill, who is something of a {{Manchild}} himself, she makes more of an attempt to listen to her students and respond to them without turning the conversation into something else entirely. When Daria raises a question about the assignment in "Partner's Complaint," Diane's explanation is a sound one that Daria can't argue with.

->'''Voiced by:''' Nicole Carin and Danielle Carin

Another one of the Lawndale High's teachers who is relatively sane, Ms. Defoe is the school's hippie-esque art teacher. Very relaxed and calm, she enjoys having creative students like Jane Lane, and conversely she seems to be one of the only teachers Jane and Daria seem to have any respect for. She also tends to get slightly frustrated with students like Brittany and Kevin, who don't seem to have any artistic ability at all.
----
* TheCobblersChildrenHaveNoShoes: Despite being an art teacher the only time she's ever seen creating something is when she was knitting during a teaching conference, though "The Daria Diaries" mentions she's thinking of putting together a mail order business at some point.
* CoolTeacher: As mentioned, Jane seems to actually respect her, and Daria doesn't seem to have any problem with her either. Claire enjoys having them in her class, and she's able to have a serious discussion about their submission for the art contest in "Arts n' Crass." When at first put off by the idea that they may have been mocking people with eating disorders, when Daria fully explains what the piece's actual intent was, to make people think about standards of beauty while supporting those who don't want to be judged by their looks, Claire thought it was brilliant.
* HippieTeacher: A subdued version of this trope, but the long simple dress and long hair, with the attention towards social issues is all there.
* OnlySaneWoman: Among Lawndale High's faculty, Ms. Defoe is the most level-headed teacher comparing her to Mr. O'Neill. While both are somewhat hippieish and idealistic, Claire is capable of genuinely interacting with and understanding her students, whereas O'Neill only listens to what he wants to hear and is a more exaggerated portrayal of the HippieTeacher trope.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Willing to hear out the motivations behind Daria's poem and Jane's painting, recognizing the artistic potential.
* SurroundedByIdiots: She has to endure a bunch of freeloading roommates she doesn't have the strength to kick out.

[[folder:Mrs. Margaret Manson]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Jessica Zaino

The school psychologist who, interestingly enough, is not an actual doctor. Gives rather insipid tests to potential students and doesn't like it when people like Daria give her smart answers. Ms. Li apparently uses her to spot "any potential clouds on the horizon" when new students enter Lawndale High.
----
* BitCharacter: Her only prominent role was in the first episode. After that she became a background character.
* ChildHater: Subverted. She claims she loves her job, but has nightmares where the students turn into bloodsucking bats and attack her.
* DrJerk: Although she's not an actual doctor. She refers to Daria as "Dara," even after Daria clearly corrects her. In fact, Margaret gets pissed off at her and says "I'm sorry, DARIA," in an annoyed voice, as if she can't be bothered to actually remember it. She was the whole reason Daria ended up in the self-esteem class. "The Daria Diaries" showed her in a session with Stacey, but she's more concerned about lunch than Stacey's problems.
* {{Jerkass}}: One of the meaner staff members of Lawndale High, in that she specifically has Daria "diagnosed" with low self esteem just because Daria was being snarky about her "Picture of two people talking" test.

[[folder:Ms. Morris]]

The gym teacher and coach of the Lawndale High Track Team. She has a sour history with the Lane Family and is supposedly the reason Penny Lane has been backpacking through third world countries. One of the more openly corrupt teachers at the school, blatantly favoring the cheerleaders and members of the track team.
----
* BitCharacter: Is only prominent in "See Jane Run".
* TheCorrupter: Can be considered one to Jane during her period on the track team. She gives preferential treatment to the jocks and encourages them to skip classes as long as they keep winning in competitions.
* GymClassHell: When she's not putting her students through physical hell, she's trying to sneak in cheerleading practice under the guise of "agility exercises."
* KarmaHoudini: After flat-out threatening to fail Jane on purpose unless she rejoins the track team, the only punishment she gets is Jane threatening to call the local news studios about the grade-changing scheme. Morris is then seen putting the girls through another cheerleading practice in class as payback.
* NoodleIncident: Whatever she did to Penny Lane.
-->'''Ms. Morris''': I taught her a thing or two about the American competitive spirit.
-->'''Jane''': You sure did. That's why she's spent the last ten years out of the country.
* SadistTeacher: Her photo in "The Daria Diaries" has half her class in pain, to which she responds with a self-satisfied smirk.

Lawndale's corrupt, dictatorial, self-aggrandizing principal. Ms. Li is completely obsessed with bringing prestige to the school (mainly so that she can take all the credit for it), and seems to view school administration (and just about everything, really) as some kind of bizarre contest--one she intends to win at all costs.
----
* ArchEnemy:
** She's the closest thing Daria has to one. Kevin and Brittany are annoying and insensitive, but genuinely harmless and (somewhat) friendly to Daria. Sandi only cares about trying to destroy Quinn and is implied to be too scared of Daria to try bullying her. Ms. Li on the other hand frequently comes to blows with Daria, as Daria consistently steps in to question her immoral and unethical practices as the school principal.
** Ms. Li also serves as a more active antagonist to Helen, even worse than Sandi's mother.
* AsianRudeness: "Li" is a common Asian surname, especially in China, and Ms. Li is a {{Jerkass}} towards the students, the faculty, and even parents.
* AxCrazy: She literally becomes this at the end of "Fizz Ed" as a result of having a VillainousBreakdown from a combination of fruitlessly appeasing the Ultra Cola contract and an overload of sugar and caffeine. She gets out a fire ax and starts running around the school smashing open vending machines.
-->'''Ms. Li''': Open up you lousy damn machine! Give up the soda in your bowels! SODA SODA MUST HAVE SODA!!!
* BadBoss: Treats her employees very, ''very'' badly and isn't much better to the students.
* BigBad: One of the most frequent antagonists of the series, and a representation of the superficiality which Daria often faces (with her constant seeking of prestige).
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She tries very hard to present the image of being a caring, sympathetic educator who's only looking out for the wellbeing of Lawndale High. She fails '''''very''''' hard at doing it.
* TheCaligula: InUniverse she is seen by Daria like this several times.
* DeanBitterman: She rules Lawndale High with an iron fist, with Daria and Helen practically being the only people to keep her in check.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: The only time she shows a conscience is when she stops the students from lewdly making out with one another in the modeling episode.
* FreudianSlip: All too often she'll accidentally mention how she's covertly shorting the rest of the faculty what they're owed or her plans to violate someone's privacy for some needless investigation.
* {{Greed}}: For recognition as a Principal and for her school to look good; she also sold out her school and education standards for money from a soda company.
* HateSink: She's by far one of the most unlikable characters on the show, having zero positive qualities and about as corrupt as one could get, with her only entertainment value coming from Daria and Helen making her look like a jackass.
* {{Irony}}: If you pay close attention in her office, it's implied that she may be a Buddhist with the Buddha statue sitting on her shelf. Of course, you would never guess that given how greedy and materialistic she is.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She frequently forces the students to participate in charitable programs via threats of detention and suspension so she can personally reap the benefits the good press would provide. She mainly uses a cover of acting like her concern is for the image of Lawndale High, but you can see how that affects her since she ''runs'' Lawndale High.
* {{Jerkass}}: She doesn't particularly care about her students or faculty and is very iron-fisted, with one tie-in book saying that "any mention of the ACLU will get on my nerves".
* KarmaHoudini: Unless you count ending up on the evening news after a mercenary group comes to school to recruit students ("This Year's Model"), Helen threatening to sue her for stealing and altering the content of Daria's poster in "Arts n' Crass" and the cola-induced freak-out in "Fizz Ed," Ms. Li hasn't been punished for any of her unethical actions. [[spoiler:Although the credits of "Is It College Yet?" shows her [[KarmaHoudiniWarranty hiding out in a run-down motel, presumably from the cops.]]]]
* KickTheDog:
** Throughout the entire series, she puts the students through ridiculous, unethical, and often illegal schemes to raise money so she can spend it on absurd security measures (and possibly embezzle some of it, as implied by certain episodes, such as "Fair Enough," when she used the money for maintenance and repairs on a polygraph machine, which she claims she won in a raffle).
** A good case for this was when she forced Daria to sell chocolate to a woman who was hypoglycemic, implying that she was not even interested in others' well-being.
* LaserGuidedKarma: After four seasons of not getting a proper comeuppance for her actions, "Fizz Ed" has her on a freefall to humiliation, as detailed below in VillanousBreakdown. In short: She completely sells out the school to the soda brand Ultra Cola, and goes to extreme methods that compromise even the education quality, to the point Daria is forced to intervene and contact the superintendent. She finally has her big meltdown on the same day the superintendent chooses to listen to Daria's warnings.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: She's more concerned with school security to the point of pilfering the budget for ridiculous measures like lie detectors, bomb-sniffing dogs, and satellite jamming equipment. Other than that, she's constantly letting the school athletes have their grades changed so they can keep playing but it's shown there are limits to how long she can let it keep happening. [[spoiler:After Kevin Thompson spent most of the series getting automatic passes on his exams, it reached a point where no one could excuse his terrible performance and he flunks his senior year.]]
* TheParanoiac: She's completely obsessed with the high school's security to the point of seeming deluded.
** At the start of Daria's senior year, she made an announcement stating the school nurse was still accepting "voluntary urine samples." Why in God's name she would need them is anyone's guess.
--->'''Ms. Li''': Show your school spirit with the gift of urine!
--->'''The Fashion Club''': ''Ewwwww!''
** One time when she arrives at Ms. Defoe's class and is told that she went to the bathroom, Ms. Li immediately assumes the worst and records a reminder to run drug tests on the teaching staff.
* PetTheDog: Subverted. In "Antisocial Climbers," Mr. O'Neill suffers from asthma while on a school hiking trip (and carrying heavy camera equipment on top of that), and he turns around at the halfway point to go back to the buses for his second inhaler despite it starting to snow heavily. Ms. Li claims that O'Neill won't make it, and goes after him. Jane notes this as a surprisingly selfless thing on Ms. Li's part... until Daria points out that O'Neill has her cameras.
* SitcomArchNemesis:
** To Daria's mom, Helen, as seen in such episodes as "Arts 'N Crass," "The Daria Hunter," and "Just Add Water."
** Mr. [=DeMartino=] in so many episodes, especially in the Teacher Strike episode.
* SmallNameBigEgo: She acts as though she's a well-respected and feared leader of Lawndale High when she's really a cowardly and inept moron willing to sink to any means necessary to exploit her students for prestige and money.
* StupidEvil: Her greed and self-righteousness frequently blind her to reality. In "Arts N' Crass", she alters Daria and Jane's poster without their approval, then tries to punish them after they deface it in protest. She calls up Mrs. Morgendorffer expecting support, only for Helen to point out that Ms. Li essentially confessed to a violation of civil liberties and could be subject to a big fat lawsuit.
* VerbalTic: She's almost incapable of saying "Lawndale High" without a tone of awe.
* VillainousBreakdown: Had one at the climax of season five's "Fizz Ed." After her plan to get the football team to meet the sales quota for the Ultra Cola contract backfired (she told them she'd raise their grades depending on how much soda they drank; they were supposed to ''buy'' the soda from the vending machines but got it from the cafeteria, and had to forfeit a game due to indigestion), Ms. Li snaps from the pressure and from consuming too much soda herself. By the end of the episode, she's breaking open vending machines with a fire ax and has to be hospitalized. On top of it, this happens when the superintendent decides to visit the school on Daria's call.

Jane's brother, an incredibly laid-back lead singer in Mystik Spiral, a local band. Daria had quite a crush on him, though he seemed oblivious.
----
* AffectionateNickname: "Janey" for his little sister.
* TheAllegedCar: His 1973 Plymouth Satellite and The Tank. When Daria asks if it's ok for Trent to leave his car in the middle of the road, he just shrugs and replies that nobody ever steals it "for some reason".
* {{Badbutt}}: His bad boy image fools exactly no one...except Daria.
* CoolBigBro: Is a confidant to Jane and someone she trusts a lot he takes her seriously and is welcoming of her friends. At one point he looks sad when Jane tells Wind that there isn't going to be another baby, as he seems to like being part of a big family and being a big brother.
* DeadpanSnarker: He doesn't get to snark much as he tends to be very amiable and a bit lazy, but when he does he can dish it out as well as his younger sister and her friend.
-->'''Nathan:''' ''[looking down at Trent's outfit]'' Do you dress like that everyday? I mean, the '60s are over.\
'''Trent:''' ''[commenting on Nathan's zoot suit and hat]'' The 40s were over first.
* DreadfulMusician: He and the other members of Mystik Spiral are intended to be horrible musicians. Though if you exclude the silly lyrics, "Freakin' Friends" is actually rather competent[[note]]According to the [[https://ew.com/tv/2017/04/03/daria-exclusive-see-what-daria-and-her-friends-look-like-today/ '20 years later']] video made in 2017 by the show's co-creator and character designer, it ended up being Mystik Spiral's OneHitWonder which brought them some brief financial success[[/note]]. Seems to be a trend with Trent; he's actually not a half-bad guitarist or singer, but his lyrics are pure WordSalad.
%% * EruditeStoner: Occasionally the first part, mostly just the second.
* FakeBand: Mystik Spiral ([[RunningGag but they're thinking of changing their name]])
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Foolish to Jane's Responsible. When the two of them had to get the "naming gazebo" fixed, Jane was the one earning the money while Trent's job was to hire a work crew and get them working on it. Jane earns more than the necessary amount and later finds Trent and the workers napping; it took Jane threatening to withhold payment to get them working. Trent knows she's the responsible one and when Jane decides to go to college, he gets upset and calls her a sellout. He later reveals that he's worried she might completely abandon him like their other siblings and their house is kinda scary without her.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic
* GiftedlyBad: As a musician Trent isn't that dreadful a guitarist (at least not by the standards of the average garage band) but as a lyricist, he goes ''beyond'' awful.
* HeavySleeper: He's often seen sleeping all day. And ''while driving''.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Trent's plan for coping with a stressful family reunion is to find a bar and get unconscious.
* InVinoVeritas: According to Jane, when Trent drinks he gets ''[[BrutalHonesty honest]]'' with everyone.
* JustFriends: It's implied that Trent is aware that Daria has a crush on him, but he avoids commenting on it to spare Daria the embarrassment. When Daria finally gets over her crush on him, Trent apologizes to her for failing at their project and also comments that they wouldn't be a good match... regarding the project.
--> '''Trent''': Maybe we just have different ideas about what a commitment is.\
'''Daria''': I suppose we do.\
'''Trent''': I guess it wasn't such a great idea for us to get together... on this.\
'''Daria''': No, I guess there was no way it could have worked out.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: The fourth out of five.
* MrFanservice: Is seen streaking in the intro for one of the movies, and wearing a sailor outfit at one point.
* NiceGuy: Trent may be a real slacker but he is a generally nice guy who genuinely loves and cares for his sister, Jane. He also seems to care a lot about Daria.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite his laidback personality, Trent seems visibly resentful when he tells Jake and Helen about nobody inviting him back to his house after six months of camping in the backyard. He doesn’t like being grounded before breaking curfew, but seems to appreciate that the Morgendorffers actually care about him.
* ObliviousToLove: {{Averted|Trope}} as of "That was Then, This is Dumb" in the second season. He never brings it up to Daria, though, and she eventually outgrows her crush on him.
* OddFriendship: He's got similar parental abandonment issues (but not the hostility) with Jake and this leads to a pretty tight bond between the two of them. If Jake needs help finding the girls, Trent is his "go-to" man.
* OnlySaneMan: As shown in 'Lane Miserables' he becomes this to his family when Jane isn't around. He's also the more smarter and savvy member of his band, as shown in "Speedtrapped".
* RelationshipRevolvingDoor: He used to have this kind of relationship with his on-and-off girlfriend Monique until "Lanes Miserables", where he gets tired of the dynamic.
* RomanticFalseLead: For Daria. Even she's aware that they're not right for each other.
* SadClown: He's secretly worried he's wasting his life with his music career, working so hard for not much success. Daria, of all people, thinks he's brave for at least doing what makes him happy.
* SecretSecretKeeper: In "That was Then, This is Dumb", Jane cracks a joke about Daria's crush while Trent's dozing nearby. Unbeknownst to either of them, he opens his eyes and smiles...meaning that he spends the entire rest of the series aware of Daria's feelings and not saying a word.
* SeriousBusiness: Sure, Trent is irresponsible, lazy, and considers doing paid jingles as "selling out", but he decides to take it seriously when Mr. O'Neill tries to write a phony rhyme into a protest song.
* SignatureLaugh: He has a brief chuckle that quickly turns into a cough. Typically heard after Daria makes a witty comment.
* TheSlacker: What finally breaks Daria out of her infatuation for him is her realization that if she and Trent did get together, they probably wouldn't get a fairytale ending because Trent is so unmotivated that he'd likely not make anything of his life.
* TheSocialExpert: Despite a personality so laid back that his communique is seldom brief, he's often able to identify moments of mounting tension between Jane and Daria. A few times throughout the series he tries to drop subtle (well, slightly subtle) hints that steer the girls towards peaceful resolution.
-->'''Jane:''' What are you even doing here? I told Trent to tell people I was out running. I guess he forgot.
-->'''Daria:''' No... he didn't.

A rich young man, Tom first came into Daria's life when he started dating Jane, and at first Daria hated his guts. Eventually, however, the two gained a mutual respect for each other that turned into more, and after Jane came to peace with it, Daria and Tom started dating. One of the few characters who can match Daria and Jane in quipping speed, and is remarkably down-to-earth despite his privileged upbringing.
----
* TheAllegedCar: Two of them, actually. The first was an [[EveryCarIsAPinto early-1970's Ford Pinto]]. From the first made-for-TV movie "Is It Fall Yet?" and every episode in Season 5, it was a 1967 Jaguar 420 G that was in better condition. According to Tom, he is aware that his car is ugly, but he sees this as a subtle way to rebel against his snob parents. Apparently, the first car was so awful that his parents secretly towed it away and forced him to replace it... with a car slightly better than the old one.
* ArtEvolution: Tom's initial design is rougher and has a small line on the side of his nose bridge. In the following seasons, he is given a refresh to his character design.
* AuthorAvatar: some fans believed that Creator/GlennEichler was inspired by himself to create the character.
%% * BetaCouple: When he was with Jane.
* CelebrityResemblance: On The-N's website when it aired Daria, they were convinced that Tom had an uncanny resemblance to Luke Skywalker.
* ConflictBall: Him and Daria have a lot of arguments, even after they started dating.
* DeadpanSnarker: Like Daria, he's not afraid to show his dry wit.
* GentlemanAndAScholar: One of the most clearest examples to this trope. He's intellectual, but unlike Daria and Jane, he is socially active and nice to anyone who interacts with him.
* KnightOfCerebus: A rare example in that the character of Tom is most notably not a villain or even AntiHero. However, his introduction into the series signaled the beginning of when Daria's show would become more serious and plot-driven and Daria herself would be thrust into a relationship for the first time, something that never happened in previous seasons or even in ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButtHead''.
* NiceGuy: He's an incredibly reasonable person, who tries hard to get along with everyone even if they're hostile toward him.
* NotSoAboveItAll: "One J At A Time" shows that for all his maturity and level-headedness, even he can't help but excitedly join in Jake's squirrel hunt, much to Daria's annoyance.
* OnlySaneMan: Especially in later seasons, he's one of the few characters who are both level-headed and pleasant, while most of the characters are either jerks or idiots.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Aside from the [[DieForOurShip shipping-related hate]], one common fan complaint is that Tom never had his own subplot separate from Daria and/or Jane, and thus remained comparably undeveloped as a character.
* SlapSlapKiss: With Daria. During the time Tom was dating Jane, Daria spent a lot of time throwing some shade at Tom, and Tom tries to be civil to her. As the story progresses, they start to know each other better, and Tom and Jane's relationship starts to weaken, he and Daria eventually end up falling in love with each other.
* SpearCounterpart: In some ways a male version of Daria and Jane, being a snarky but level-headed observer of the things around him.
* StraightMan: He's probably the least cartoonish character in the show and thus his interactions with other characters often take this form, even to Daria and Jane.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Tall, dark-haired, and attractive enough to date both Jane and Daria.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: Tall, dark-haired, and shares with Daria some of her cynical and snarky humor.
* TeenGenius: Like Daria, he's highly intelligent, cultured, and well-read.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: He is aware that Daria can be closed-off at times, and hasn't had any experience in relationships; as a result, he's very patient with her, even when they get into fights. He even respects her wishes when she told him she wasn't ready for sex ([[ButIWouldReallyEnjoyIt not that he can't be persuaded otherwise]]).
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: While there are a few times when Tom acts like a regular teenager, though, he is equally snarky as Daria and Jane, but Tom is usually the more reasonable of the three since he has to tolerate Jane and Daria's angry moments at very minor things and he has to make them think about it or get away while they calm down, and he is more willing to be polite and charming to people outside his social circle, while Daria usually resorts to sarcasm at people she doesn't like at first sight.

The king of all [[JerkAss Jerkasses]] and local hero, Tommy manages to tick off everyone he met but soon meets his end in a most ironic way.
----
* DeliberatelyBadExample: While popular kids like Kevin and Brittany aren't very bright, they're rarely malicious. By contrast, Tommy spends most of his brief appearance antagonizing them.
* {{Foil}}: To Kevin. While Kevin is a DumbJock who's constantly InnocentlyInsensitive he's generally a NiceGuy, whereas Tommy is a strait up JerkJock who embodies all the associated negative stereotypes.
* HardHead: Is said to have struck his head against goalposts numerous times, once so badly he cracked his helmet and was in a coma for days, yet shows little sign of brain damage. Not until that last time, of course.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Literally struts around Lawndale High during his visit like he owns the place. Also, the reason he was constantly running into the goalposts was because he was showboating for the crowd and not watching where he was going.
* JerkJock: He's made it an art form. He's absolutely full of himself, acting patronizing to Mack, insulting Kevin's physique compared to his own, and asking Brittany to come back to his hotel room and "get horizontal" literally 30 seconds after meeting her. He believes his achievements on the football field give him a right to do this.
* KarmicDeath: Killed by the collapsible goalpost being dedicated to him and his monstrous ego. Ironically, the collapsible goalpost was built as a ''safety'' measure. Sadly, it fell on him before it was installed. Or unpacked from the crate with the sharp edges.
* NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead: Explored through him, as his sole interactions with many Lawndale High students were enough to sour their impressions of him but the trope prevents them from really being honest about the kind of person he was.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: His brief interaction with Mack certainly has shades of this, as does his generally pervy and sexist comments towards the various female characters he comes across. Even objectifying and propositioning female characters who were teenage girls.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He was a pretty good football player in high school, so ''obviously'' this makes him a paragon of manhood and God's gift to women. Nothing is said of his accomplishments post-high school, if any.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** He is on the receiving end of one from Daria, calling him out for his misogyny and generally contemptible character.
** Tries to give one to Daria after she rightfully calls him out on being an insufferable jerkass misogynist, stating she's "a misery chick" who whines and moans so people don't notice she's a loser. It doesn't faze Daria that much until after he dies and people start coming to her for advice, saying how Daria is always "thinking about gloomy stuff".
* UnfinishedBusiness: In later seasons, it's believed that his ghost was haunting the girl's bathroom, and the cheer squad holds a séance to remove his spirit, which Mr. [=DeMartino=] believes is a "huffing party".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Lane Family]]

Jane and Trent's immediate family, which includes their parents Vincent and Amanda, and their siblings Summer, Wind, and Penny. The latter three Lane children are further examples of Vincent and Amanda's HandsOffParenting, and as such they are rarely seen around (or wanting anything to do) with the Lane household. Penny roams around third-world countries trying to launch economic revolutions, Wind's been divorced several times, and Summer is constantly raising money to pay private detectives to find her kids. Vincent and Amanda are rarely at home, leaving Jane and Trent a blank checkbook whenever they need money, and when they ''are'' at home, they're never seen.
----
* BlackSheep: Their branch is only invited to Lane family reunions because hating them brings everyone else closer together.
* FieryRedhead: Penny. Out of all the family members, she is the most cynical and prone to angry fits.
* HandsOffParenting: They were the former trope namers. Amanda keeps repeating her belief that a butterfly should be set free instead of keeping it between her hands. She eventually gives up on this after seeing how her family is out of control. For Jane's Graduation, both are out of the country, leaving Trent as the only one there for Jane.
* InTheBlood: Many Lanes shown or alluded to in the series (even the "normal" ones) seem to have a strong interest in the arts of one sort or another. Wind and Summer aren't shown to share this interest, but we don't see otherwise, either.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Wind is a miserable example of this. ''Lane Miserables'' and ''Art Burn'' show off his need to be the center of attention by crying about everything.
* {{Jerkass}}: Penny is the gruffest and coldest of the Lane siblings, with Summer somewhat behind her in terms of temperament. The one sibling Penny hasn't been rude to yet is Jane.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: How Penny comes across. According to ''The Daria Diaries'' she's convinced she can save third world countries, but she doesn't even know if UsefulNotes/{{Honduras}} has a government nor does she even know how to speak Spanish.
* LoveMartyr: Wind can't stop crying about how he's failed all his ex-wives as a husband and how he'll never be able to make a marriage work.
* {{Narcissist}}: It doesn't matter what the conversation is, but if Wind is involved he'll make it about his failed marriages. In the wake of a village being wiped out by a volcanic eruption, Penny is deeply concerned...about getting reimbursed for her craft stand being destroyed.
* NoodleIncident
** Somehow, Amanda and Helen appear to be old friends, but it's never explained when or how the two ever met.
** Something happened between Penny and Ms. Morris when Penny was still going to Lawndale High. Whatever it was served as Penny's motivation to backpack across South America and poisoned Ms. Morris towards all Lanes from then on.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Amanda tries to act like a calm, collected, and mellow mother who gives her kids all the freedom they want, but she eventually starts begging Helen for help to get her adult children out of the house.
-->'''Amanda''': You know Helen if you try to hold a butterfly tightly in your hand, it will die. You have to let it go, and- YOU GOTTA HELP ME! I NEED MY HOUSE BACK!
* ParentsAsPeople:
** Vincent and Amanda aren't bad people, and while they do love their kids, it's clear their parenting skills leave something to be desired. Vincent is something of a pacifist and is constantly trying to get everyone to get along, while Amanda is fine with letting everyone do their own thing for the sake of not being MyBelovedSmother. Unfortunately, what she considered Trent wanting to be on his own during those months when he lived in a tent was actually Trent waiting to be invited back into the house.
** Summer has been spending a lot of money and time trying to find her four missing kids, but when she finally gets two of them back she's rather mean to them and demands to know if they're gonna start crying about wanting to go home, why did they run away and drag her back to her parents' house in the first place?
* TheRunaway: Summer's four children, only two of whom, Courtney and Adrian, have appeared on-screen.
* SilverVixen: Subverted because it's not that Amanda looks young for her age but that her daughter Summer had kids when she was young.
* {{Squick}}: In-universe, something about Cousin Jimmy's modeling career makes Jane shudder when she mentions it.
* SoapboxSadie: Penny is convinced she can revitalize the economies of countries like Honduras and UsefulNotes/CostaRica by selling handmade picture frames and coin purses, but it's clear her knowledge of said countries is shoddy at best.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mrs. Johansen]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Amy Bennett

A morbidly obese resident of Lawndale.
----
* ArchEnemy: In "Mart of Darkness", she is seen to be this with Mr. [=DeMartino=] when it comes to the free food samples at Payday.
* FatSlob: She is morbidly obese and goes around town in her nightgown even when shopping for groceries. It's seen that she exclusively goes to Payday, a warehouse market, to buy huge amounts of food and get free samples. When the Fashion Club stop by her house to ask for clothes donations, she ambushes them thinking they are selling chocolates, and they understandably get away fast.
* IgnoredEpiphany: When the Morgendorffers are at the mental clinic, Ms. Johansen is having a therapy session where she is about to reach the realization of why she ended up addicted to food. Then Quinn interrupts the session to look for the handsome doctor and casually mentions how vertical stripes help to look slimmer. Ms. Johansen quickly forgets what she was about to say and takes interest in Quinn's tip on patterns, which was apparently an easier way to avoid her issues rather than solve them, to the doctor's frustration.
* RecurringExtra: She appears often after "Cafe Disaffecto" in the background or as a punchline character.
* UngratefulBitch: Despite Daria and Jane witnessing how she collapsed at her front door and consequently refuse to sell her chocolates after that, she calls the school to complain about them.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Taylor Family]]

Brittany's family consists of her father Steve, her stepmother Ashley-Amber, and her little brother Brian.
----
* AgeGapRomance: Steve and his new wife Ashley-Amber are at least 20 years apart. At first, Daria thinks she is Brittany's sister.
* AlliterativeName: Ashley-Amber's both TwoFirstNames start with A.
* AlphabeticalThemeNaming: Both Brittany's and her brother Brian's names start with "Bri"
* TheCameo: They appear in the crowd as Brittany's guests for Graduation.
* DumbBlonde: Just like Brittany, Ashely-Amber isn't that bright either. When Daria meets her, she comments "I didn't know Brittany had a sister", and she thinks there's another Taylor kid she hasn't met yet.
* DotingParent: Steve goes to great lengths to make Brittany happy. He even organizes a big party because Brittany got a C- in a test, and bought her a very expensive glass megaphone.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Ashley-Amber appears in the first season as a random celebrity model promoting her book on TV. The following season it's revealed that she is married into the Taylor family.
* GoldDigger: It's implied that Ashley-Amber is after Steve Taylor's money because [[AllThereInTheManual she is studying joint-property laws behind his back]]. Other than that, she is shown to be genuinely nice to Brittany and her husband.
* GoodStepmother: Brittany and Ashley-Amber have a good relationship, to the point she goes with Brittany to a Mother-Daughter fashion runway event, and much later to her Graduation, while her biological mother is completely absent that day.
* HiddenDepths:
** Steve Taylor might look like a pretentious rich snob with tacky taste, as seen in his house decor, but he is very capable of recognizing real artwork from knock-offs. Jane is surprised to find out that not only Mr. Taylor bought Jane's copy of a Van Gogh knowing it wasn't an original, but also gave very bold and accurate observations about the brushwork.
** [[AllThereInTheManual According to the fanbook "Daria's Database"]], Ashley-Amber is learning about joint-property laws behind Steve's back.
* KidsAreCruel: God knows what Brittany's brother did to Daria's mouse to leave it traumatized, to the point the poor animal is left catatonic and cowering at the corner of the labyrinth.
* StacysMom: Upchuck tries to flirt with Ashley-Amber. When she tells him that she's Brittany's stepmom, Upchuck still tries to hit on her after the initial shock.
* SpoiledBrat: [[GreenEyedMonster Brian starts whining to his father about Brittany having a party]], to which Steve angrily tells him that he already gave him a hangout with his friends and he still misbehaved in school. In retaliation, Brian spends the entire evening trying to ruin Brittany's party, spilling Quinn's drink on her and indirectly causing a chain reaction that ends up costing his father a lot in damages and crushing Quinn's spirit.
* TheUnfavorite: Brittany's parents clearly prefer her over her little brother Brian, who is hyperactive and a mean kid. According to the episode "Groped by an Angel", Steve "borrows" money from Brian's college fund to pay for Brittany's gifts.
* UpperClassTwit: Brittany's father is so rich that he spends a lot of money on tacky decorations like porcelain tigers, knock-off paintings just for showing off to his less cultured guests, and a glass megaphone for his daughter just to celebrate a C- on her test.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Ashley-Amber is actually 26 years old, but she can be easily mistaken for a high school student.

[[caption-width-right:330:From left to right: Nick, Max, Trent , Jesse]]
->'''Jesse is voiced by:''' Tom Borillo

They're Mystik Spiral, but they're thinking of changing the name. The band's members are Nick Campbell (bass), Max Tyler (drums), Trent Lane (lead guitar and vocals), and Jesse Moreno (rhythm guitar and supporting vocals)

Trent's tropes are listed in his folder.
----
* ChildhoodFriends: According to [[AllThereInTheManual Reburb]], Jesse and Trent have been friends since they were 12 years old, and have been in the same classes through Lawndale High.
* CloudCuckooLander: Trent might be an irresponsible slacker, but somehow the guys manage to make Trent look more centered in comparison. Jesse is notably more of a ditz.
* DreadfulMusician: Mystik Spiral isn't popular because of their lyrics and the band's lack of technique.
* GarageBand: Sure, they play some gigs at alternative clubs, but they are not remotely popular.
* ShipTease: Jane is usually seen looking at Jesse whenever they try to give Trent and Daria a moment.
* SatelliteCharacter: Nick and Max are only seen when the band makes appearances as a group. Jesse appears more times, but only whenever the episode features Trent.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Nick and Max are the two extra guys with minor roles.
* TokenMinority: Jesse is the only one with a Hispanic last name.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Nathan]]

One of Jane's boyfriends after her breakup with Tom. He has an obsession with vintage fashion.
----
* AwesomeAnachronisticApparel: Nathan intentionally dresses in [=1940s-50s=] styles, and he looks fine enough to date Jane.
* DiscoDan: He is a high schooler obsessed with 1940s aesthetics.
* NobodyTouchesTheHair: When kissing Nathan, Jane messes up his hair and he has a minor freak-out.
* SeriousBusiness: Nathan takes his nostalgia to a rigid and ridiculous degree, to the point he feels like micromanaging what Jane wears and does. Jane tells him to lighten up because this is just for fun, while Nathan feels he's a true believer who has to stand his ground against "trendies."
* SkewedPriorities: During their discussion about Jane’s shoes develops into a whole fight about their differences, Jane tries to make a point by saying that he’s supposed to like her whether she dresses up or has sweatpants. Nathan replies with disdain “You own sweatpants?”. This is the last straw for Jane and she dumps him.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: Daria and Tom knew at first glance that he was a jerk, but felt Jane had to realize it by herself.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: While it's not easy to spot because of his suits and style, Nathan is also a high schooler.

!Characters from the movies
[[folder:David Sorenson]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/CarsonDaly

A college student who was hired to tutor Quinn with her studies in "Is it Fall yet?".
----
* BrutalHonesty: David doesn't hold back from informing Quinn that she's a boring, uninteresting person and the only reason why she's popular is because guys think she's hot.
* TheFirstCutIsTheDeepest: He is the first guy Quinn gets serious and confesses to him that she likes him. Not only David rejects her but tells Quinn to her face that he isn't interested in girls like her. Quinn is so affected by the rejection that she cries when discussing it with Daria.
* {{Foil}}:
** He is another spear counterpart for Daria, but unlike Daria, who learned how to tolerate her classmates' ignorance and see the good in them, David has little patience for shallow people, and even after Quinn proves herself, he still labels her as shallow.
** To Lindy from "Is it College yet?". Both give Quinn a taste of reality and contrast between her high school status quo and college life. While David is blunt and has the SternTeacher approach, Lindy is more caring and acts as a CoolBigSis. While David does appreciate Quinn's development, he still rejects her because he isn't interested in her, while Lindy sees beyond Quinn's appearance and treats her as an equal, despite her own fatal flaws.
* GuyOfTheWeek: He gets teased as a possible romantic interest for Quinn after she develops a crush on him. He stops appearing after rejecting her.
* HotForTeacher: Downplayed as David is still in college. Quinn develops a crush on him.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: When David gets frustrated by Quinn's lack of effort, he is ready to quit, and tells Quinn that she won't get anywhere if she keeps her immature attitude regarding her studies. Quinn has to get serious and admit that she can do better to get David to stay for the rest of the summer.
* ReformedButRejected: Even after she starts being serious about her studies, David considers Quinn too shallow to want to date her (it's not stated in the movie, but it doesn't help that Quinn is underage).
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: David threatens Quinn to leave if she doesn't take their sessions seriously. He actually leaves on the spot after dealing with Tiffany and Sandi in less than an hour with each of them.
* SternTeacher: He is a very serious college student who has no patience for the vapid, popular high school students, and makes it very clear to Quinn that he is not willing to put up with her if she doesn't apply herself.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alison]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/BifNaked

A fellow artist Jane meets at Ashfield in "Is it Fall yet?".
----
* TheCameo: In "Is it College yet?", the Alter-Egos credits show her on a farm with Lindy and children that are implied to be theirs.
* ClosetKey: At first Jane starts to think she might be bisexual because of her. Jane later realizes that she isn't gay, especially after seeing that Alison is as bad as the other people in the art community.
* DepravedBisexual: She tries to seduce Jane by confusing her about her sexuality, despite the fact that Jane is still in high school. And much later she goes to bed with Daniel Dotson despite previously thinking Daniel was a pretentious jerk.
* {{Hypocrite}}: When she and Jane meet, she thinks Daniel is a jackass, and she takes pride in her own work as an artist. After Jane rejects her, she is revealed that she slept with Daniel to get his connections in the industry, which Jane calls her out for.
* IncompatibleOrientation: When Jane tells Alison that she's straight, Alison insists that [[{{Gaydar}} she never hits on straight girls]], making Jane question herself. Ultimately, though, Jane concludes that she is straight and Alison is just a ManipulativeBitch.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Link]]
A kid Daria meets during summer camp in "Is it Fall yet?".
----
* DefrostingIceKing: Link takes a while to start trusting Daria, but his own insecurities made him get away by interpreting Daria's efforts to get closer to him as an obligation on her part. He eventually accepts Daria's offer to be penpals by writing her a brief letter about his problems at home with his stepfather.
* {{Foil}}: He is as bitter and angry as Daria is with the world. While Daria's personality is just because she is that way, Link's resentment against the world has a lot to do with his parents' divorce, and his interactions with his new stepfather, among other issues in his life.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lindy]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/JessicaHardin

Quinn's coworker at her part-time job in "Is it College yet?". She is eventually revealed to have a drinking problem.
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: While not stated in the movie and her friendship with Quinn being strictly platonic, the Alter-Egos credits show her on a farm with Alison from "Is it Fall yet?" and children that are implied to be theirs.
* TheAlcoholic: Quinn starts noticing that she is hardly seen without liquor, to the point she even starts drinking on the job.
* BrokenPedestal: Quinn develops a deeper friendship with her than with the Fashion Club, but she starts noticing that Lindy's drinking is getting worse. Quinn gets even more disappointed when Lindy, caught drinking in the middle of her shift, tries to pin it on Quinn.
* CoolBigSis: She starts off guiding Quinn on her first day at the restaurant, and later helps her fit in with other college students, kickstarting another step of CharacterDevelopment for her. Unfortunately, Quinn starts noticing some issues with her.
* {{Foil}}: To David from "Is it Fall yet?".
* INeedAFreakingDrink: This happens with Lindy after she snaps at Quinn for confronting her about her drinking. Despite having made a point of not having a drink in her hand at that moment, Lindy immediately opens her fridge and grabs a beer, being visibly angry while doing so. "Beer" is also on the grocery list we see on the fridge.
* ImmediateSelfContradiction: A realistic one from Lindy about her alcohol problem.
-->'''Lindy''': You know how I'm sure I can handle it? Whenever I think I'm drinking too much, I stop for a week, just to prove to myself that I can.\
'''Quinn''': Really?\
'''Lindy''': Yeah. ''I do it all the time''.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: She appears in the last installment of the series and becomes Quinn's friend.
* NeverMyFault: After being fired, she apologizes to Quinn about shifting the blame on her, but instead of accepting her problem, she blames it on the restaurant manager, who fired her justifiedly for her drinking problem.
