During the time Devin and Xander are escorting Abel home (as they are now adventures with tips of monster sightings in the area), Devin and Abel begin to make peace with one another only for all three to get caught in an ambush that immediately kills Xander and kills Devin shortly after (thanks to Abel's headwings sprouting and distracting Devin), all before Abel's eyes. Abel is too afraid to help the dying Devin, a guilt that weighs heavily on him afterwards. Abel manages to escape the carnage thanks to his former teacher, Kria Soulstealer who was involved in it.
