The character sheet about the European Union characters of ''Anime/CodeGeass''.
----
[[foldercontrol]]
[[folder:In General]]
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: While they are at war with Britannia, they are only slightly better. They discriminate against anyone with Japanese blood regardless of whether they actually came to Europa as refugees or if they were born there. They're led by an extremely corrupt aristocracy, would rather make refugees serve as soldiers rather than their own country men, and show no hesitance in using their soldiers as suicide bombers. The [=wZERO=] {{subvert|edTrope}} this. While they start as {{nominal hero}}es, over the course of the series they gradually regain their lost humanity, and become an AntiHeroTeam.
* DevelopingDoomedCharacters: The halfway point of ''R2'' established that Britannia ultimately defeated the E.U., initially giving the impression this would be the case. {{Subverted|Trope}} however, as while some have their fates [[AmbiguousSituation unknown]], most of them manage to [[EarnYourHappyEnding make it out happy]] [[spoiler:specifically by ''deserting'' from the military.]]
* ForegoneConclusion: ''R2'' established that the E.U. loses to Britannia by the halfway point, so they ''will'' lose despite their efforts fighting back Euro-Britannia.
* FrenchJerk: The English Dub gives the native born characters French accents, and aside from the ones part of [=wZERO=], most of them are generally unpleasant.

[[caption-width-right:210:A skilled dictator is much more beneficial to humanity than a democracy of ignorant people]]

A general of the E.U. army. He is Leila's direct superior and as well as mentor.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: [[spoiler:He wants to rule over the E.U. as its emperor.]]
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:No one sheds any tears when Ashley kills him.]]
* BigGood: [[spoiler:Subverted. He's actually a power hungry man out to rule over the Union as its emperor.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:While he outwardly appears to be committed to the EU's cause, in reality he only cares about gaining power for himself.]]
* CoolOldGuy: One of the few Europeans who seems to have respect for the Elevens. [[spoiler:After his true nature is revealed it's implied that he's likely faking it.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:He made a deal with Shin's Euro-Britannia by allowing them to attack W-0's headquarters, all so he can make Leila into a martyr.]]
* DistressedDude: Briefly in Episode 1 as he ends up on the receiving end of a kidnapping attempt by Ryo's group.
* KnightInSourArmor: Is unhappy with the EU's corrupt elite, but still believes in its revolutionary ideals. [[spoiler:In truth however he just wants to become its emperor.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:He's manipulated Leila and the youth of the military into believing he's a just man. He was able to convince the youth to initiate a coup by deceiving them into believing he's doing it for the sake of the Union and its people. He later uses Leila to inspire hope in the people during the riots and then to whip them into a unified frenzy by trying to make Leila into a martyr.]]
* NonActionGuy: Is not seen directly fighting.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Doesn't object to Leila's unconventional efforts to try and make things better. [[spoiler:He's just pretending to be one to get the youth and Leila on his side.]]
* TheUnreveal: He's visited by the Caretaker of Spacetime in Episode 3, and it's said he had at one point attempted to betray them, which is why they order him to kill Shin Hyūga Shaing, and declares that said order is a contract with ''Geass'', all but saying that Smilas had some connection to Geass. [[spoiler:This connection would never be revealed however, as the Caretaker teleports Ashley to Smilas' location, allowing Ashley to kill him before he can reveal his connection.]]

[[folder:Pierre Anou]]

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KosukeToriumi (Japanese), Jeremy Schwartz (English)

The ex-commanding officer of W-0, who also happens to be racist. Gets replaced by Leila in the first OVA episode.
----
* ArmchairMilitary: Anou acts like this for the few minutes he's on screen, and gets called on it by Leila due to him ordering the W-0 unit to self-destruct in order to take out enemy Knightmares when it would serve no practical purpose.
* BadBoss: Anou sees the Eleven as expendable soldiers and threatens Leila with a gun.
* BeardOfEvil: Not exactly evil, but he has a goatee and is a total asshat.
* EvilIsPetty: Leaves the W-0 Unit on the streets of a foreign city out of nothing but spite for having him removed from command.
* FrenchJerk: Has a very french-sounding name and he's a total jackass.
* HateSink: Only exists to show the callousness the European Union's army has towards Elevens and how they're not so different from Britannia. [[spoiler:{{Subverted|Trope}} by the end, as he's shown to have joined the gypsy group alongside the Wyvern Squad and Asura Strike Force, and appears to be fully considered part of the group now that he's humbled himself.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: Deletes W-0's credentials from the EU Army's database and leaves them on the street, only for Yukiya to do the exact same thing to him some time later.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: [[spoiler:When he's shown in the end with the gypsies, he's shown to have been humbled somewhat after being forced to do work for them, and the animosity he had for the Wyvern Squad appears to be gone.]]
[[/folder]]
!wZERO
[[folder:In General]]
Also known as the Wyvern Unit, they are a special unit in the E.U. army tasked with high risk missions with low chances of survival. Aside from the operators, they are largely comprised of Japanese soldiers due to being considered more expendable.
----
* AntiHeroTeam: While the pilots start out as a group of {{nominal hero}}es, [[FireForgedFriends as they grow closer with one another on the battlefield]], they turn in to this. While they still aren't averse to unsavory methods and can be rather cynical, they ultimately come to care about each other as a FamilyOfChoice, and stop at nothing to protect each other. This is especially notable when Akito's Geass command triggers the "Brain Raid System". Whereas initially it would send the other pilots sans Leila into just as bad a rage as him, after they grew closer they managed to fight off it's effects, instead trying to calm Akito.
* FantasticRacism: The result of it. The entire unit is largely comprised of Japanese soldiers due to being seen as more expendable. When commanded by Anou, the pilots are effectively relegated to suicide bombers, the practice only being ended after Leila takes command from Anou and has him demoted. By then though, the only remaining pilot was Akito, requiring Leila {{recruit|ingTheCriminal}} Ryo's group despite having just tried to kidnap Smilas and kill her just to get access to more pilots.
* FireForgedFriends: It's only after fighting the Asura Strike Force and spending time with the gypsies that the group truly comes together, eventually to the point of becoming a FamilyOfChoice.
* HeroSecretService: The pilots in [=wZERO=] are all considered more expendable than actual E.U. soldiers due to being Japanese, whereas using actual E.U. soldiers would likely be a PR nightmare.
* NominalHero: The Japanese Knightmare pilots aren't exactly what one would call heroic. It's only after their initial missions and spending time with the gypsies that they become FireForgedFriends, and shift from this into an AntiHeroTeam.
** Akito is normally emotionally reserved, but underneath his stoic demeanor lies a seriously mentally unstable individual thanks to what Shin did to him as a kid. The Geass order Shin left in him would send him into a murderous rage during battle, and he made it no secret to Leila that [[BrokenHero he cared little for his own life,]] and would gladly destroy this "corrupt world" if she asked him to.
** Ryo, Ayano, and Yukiya meanwhile originally acted as terrorists for their own benefit, and had no qualms about innocents getting caught in the crossfire. Ryo and Yukiya initially try attacking Akito and Leila during their first mission, and Yukiya tried using himself as a suicide bomber twice to stop Akito from pursuing Ryo and Ayano.
* OnlyTheLeadsGetAHappyEnding: As the E.U. losing to Britannia is a ForegoneConclusion as established in ''R2'', the [=wZERO=] doesn't necessarily need to suffer a similar fate. [[spoiler:Akito, Leila, Ryo, Yukiya, Ayano, Ashley, and the Asura Squad all end up deciding to {{defect|orFromDecadence}} from their militaries and go live with the old gypsy women rather than continue fighting at the end of their series.]]
* PsychicLink: The "Brain Raid System" allows the operators to monitor the brainwaves of the pilots, and should a pilot reach a certain level of brain activity, it can inadvertently cause a link to form between pilots. Namely, when Akito's Geass command activates and turns him into TheBerserker, the BRS can send the other pilots into a similar state, as well as show them his memories. While this initially affects them undeterred, as the pilots grow closer and try to help Akito move past his demons, they manage to resist the command and simultaneously pull Akito out of it. [[spoiler:Once Leila's Geass fully awakens, it allows ''everyone'' to link their minds together, allowing not only the entirety of [=wZERO=], but also the spirits of Akito's former unit ''and'' those that Shin cared for but used his Geass on, to rally behind Akito and stop Shin from killing him.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: While they're ''all'' shown escaping Castle Weisswolf after it's attacked in the final episode, [[spoiler:the only ones shown to have joined the gypsy women are Akito, Leila, Ryo, Yukiya, Ayano, Ashley, and the Asura Squad. That leaves the fates of Hammel, Claus, Anna, Joe, Sophie, Takeru, and the {{bridge bunn|y}}ies unknown.]]

The main protagonist and titular character of ''Anime/CodeGeassAkitoTheExiled''. He's a member of the special unit W-0 (Wyvern Squad) of the Europia United army. After a disastrous first operation he's left as the sole survivor of the unit's initial batch of Japanese pilots. Quiet and reserved, he's an incredibly skilled combatant whose prowess in battle earns him the nickname "Ghost of Hannibal" from the Euro-Britannia army. He also serves as Leila Malcal's bodyguard and even gives her advice at times.
----
* AceCustom: He gains one in the final episode known as the Alexander Liberte, which is Akito's original Alexander unit upgraded with the latest technology that the W-0 could afford to put on it.
* AcePilot: The best one that the W-0 has to offer.
* AxCrazy: Not by choice. As a boy, he was geassed by his older brother Shin to "die". However, as Akito was still a child at the time and thus too young to understand the concept of death, the order failed to register and he ended up living. However, the order itself remained within his psyche and eventually translated into ''killing everything that stood in his path'' when activated in battle. This later goes away thanks to Leila and his friends continuously reaching out to Akito to not give in to the order and eventually succeed.
* TheBerserker: His battle style when piloting a Knightmare, especially in the [[SuperPrototype Alexander]].
* BloodKnight: In the first few episodes he's rather eager at the idea of taking on enemy Knightmares complete with SlasherSmile and all. This eventually fades after his second battle with Ashley.
* BrokenHero: At the start of the series, he's a rather cynical and emotionless with a desire to "die" thanks to his DarkAndTroubledPast. He eventually grows out of this by the end thanks to time spent with the W-0 unit.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: With Leila.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Shin's Cain.
* CharacterDevelopment: Come Episode 3 he starts to finally bond with Leila and the others thanks to their time with the Gypsy Caravan. This and later events slowly has the effect of turning Akito to a more friendly and caring person, something that also allows to finally overcome his brother's geass order once and for all. [[spoiler:The final episode even has him cracking genuinely warm smiles such as when he agrees that Ashley become a pilot for the W-0 in their final battle.]]
* ChickMagnet: A downplayed example compared to Lelouch. While Akito isn't about to go on dates with 108 girls, he does end up receiving the affections of both Leila and Ayano.
* CombatPragmatist: When fighting Knightmare to Knightmare, he doesn't aim for the mech. He aims for the cockpit.
* TheComicallySerious: He takes this role in the {{Picture Drama}}s whenever the squad goofs off, retaining the same deadpan voice and expression [[NotSoAboveItAll despite participating in everyone's silly hijinks]].
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: Blue hair and eyes.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:As a child he was the sole survivor of his family's massacre by Shin and was later even geassed by the latter into dying, though the order didn't stick but ended up severely affecting Akito's mental state in the years to come.]]
* DeathSeeker: He's instilled with a desire to "die" thanks to his brother. Subverted in that Akito never truly attempts to kill himself or let himself be killed during battle as seen in the first episode where he had the perfect opportunity to do so thanks to the bombs that were initially planted on his Alexander.
* DeadpanSnarker: Always has a dry quip for a situation. It's his defense mechanism, to hide his lack of emotions and psychosis from others.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: He ''loathes'' fish. He can't so much as stand the smell of it, let alone try and eat it. [[HilarityEnsues Naturally]], Ryo and Ayano can't help but try and stuff his mouth full of it.
* TheDreaded: Greatly feared throughout Britannia as "The Ghost of Hannibal" for his fighting tactics in his Alexander in the Eastern European front.
* FirstNameBasis: With Leila in the final episode [[spoiler:after the two of them leave the E.U. army. He initially called her "Commander" again but after seeing Leila's disappointed expression he realizes his mistake and finally calls her by her first name. Leila responds by kissing him on the lips.]]
* {{Foil}}: A very, ''very'' strong one to Suzaku. Both are Eleven Soldiers who have DeathSeeker tendencies and fight for a woman they care for. However, Suzaku started out as firmly idealistic until [[spoiler:Euphemia's death]] caused him to turn to cynicism and constantly betray those around him including those he cared for. Akito on the other hand started out firmly cynical, but his time with the W-0 unit turns him into a better and more idealistic person. He is also quite loyal to his comrades [[spoiler:and, unlike Suzaku, he's able to live out a peaceful life with Leila at the end.]]
* HatePlague: His Geass command causes this not just to himself, but to any allies who are synced to his Alexander's BRS, causing them to fight with inhuman ferocity while it lasts.
* HeroicBSOD: Akito undergoes this in Episode 2 when he remembers his past. As his mind was linked with his squad at the time, they also see his memories and experience the same thing.
* HeroicBastard: [[spoiler:Akito counts as one since he wasn't the blood-born son of Shin's father, but the son of another man whom their mother had an affair with.]]
* TheInsomniac: Akito has trouble sleeping at night because of [[DarkAndTroubledPast his past]].
* ISeeDeadPeople: Akito attributes his capability to do so with an unexplained NearDeathExperience. It's later explained to be a side effect of Shin's Geass, as it forces Shin to see the spirits of those he's killed. His deceased squadmates even move to stop Shin from killing him during their final battle.
* KindheartedCatLover: As hinted in his interactions with Leila's cat, Eliza, who's also fond of him as she is of her owner, Leila. Akito even tells her that he can tell just how much Eliza loves her, and he and Leila bond over this in the 2nd PictureDrama.
* KnightInSourArmor: Can be ''incredibly'' cynical.
* LadyAndKnight: The Knight to Leila's Lady.
* OfficialCouple: With Leila at the end of the final episode.
* OneManArmy: Can tear through entire Knightmare squads single-handedly as shown in the first OVA. Despite being outnumbered and out of ammo, the moment the self-destruct mechanism of his unit is disabled he quickly proceeds to dominate the remaining enemy forces by himself with little to no trouble.
* ParentalAbandonment: Both his parents died when he was a young child.
* ThePowerOfLove: [[spoiler:When Shin orders him to kill Leila, Akito just can't bring himself to do it as he cares too much about her. He then becomes one of the few people to overcome Geass with sheer willpower.]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: His final Knightmare, the Alexander Liberte, has purple armor and is a true match for Shin's Vercingetorix.
* RedBaron: He's known as the "Ghost of Hannibal" by Euro-Britannia.
* SlasherSmile: Displays several of them early on before fading as CharacterDevelopment settles in.
* SoleSurvivor: Of the W-0 Unit's first mission.
* TheStoic: Off the battlefield, he's a very quiet man bordering on emotionless, but he does at least display a [[DeadpanSnarker sense of humor]]. During the later episodes, he starts to open up to Leila and his comrades though he still remains calm and composed for the most part.
** NotSoStoic: When on the battlefield he's practically the opposite of how he usually is, screaming again and again for his opponents to die as he savagely beats them to death.
* UndyingLoyalty: Despite being somewhat blunt and rude early on, he's this towards Leila. He won't tolerate anyone trying to mess with her as seen with how he scares [[BigBrotherBully Ioan]] off in the first episode when he mocks her in public. [[spoiler:Not even Shin trying to geass Akito in killing her is enough to make him actually go through with it.]]
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Flashbacks show that Akito was once an innocent child like any other until the incident with Shin happened. After that he became more stoic and mentally unstable.

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/MaayaSakamoto (Japanese), Creator/JeannieTirado (English)

The main heroine of ''Anime/CodeGeassAkitoTheExiled''. She is Akito Hyuga's superior who serves as TheStrategist and later commander of the W-0 unit. Though a member of the E.U. army, she's actually Britannian by birth but was raised in the E.U. after her family defected thanks to disagreeing with the Britannian Empire's policies and system. She develops a friendship with Akito early on, often asking him about what he thinks regarding certain matters, and later falls in love with him.
----
* ActionGirl: Leila is accomplished in aikido and possibly jujutsu, which she demonstrates to anyone unfortunate enough to think she's a soft target.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Akito is, at ''the best of times'', broody and mentally unstable when they first get acquainted, but this doesn't stop the morally upright and clasically trained Leila from slowly becoming infatuated with him.
* AllLovingHero: She's an idealist who believes in the best of humanity despite its evils and [[DarkAndTroubledPast everything that she went through in her childhood]]. Though her kindness does have limits, she is not one who can bear others ill will for long. Ultimately, her desire is for humanity to understand each other, friend and foe alike. [[spoiler:This is reflected in her Geass, which lets her connect people's thoughts and consciousness with each other]].
* AMotherToHerMen: Fiercely protective of anyone under her command.
* ArrangedMarriage: To her older stepbrother Ioan in the future. It's basically null and void by the finale [[spoiler:as Leila fakes her death and decides to live together with Akito and the others as a member of the Gypsy Caravan.]]
* TheAtoner: Leila has feelings of guilt over the multitude of Elevens that died during the W-0's first operation due to her not removing her incompetent racist commander earlier than she did.
* BenevolentBoss: In contrast to Anou, Leila cares deeply for the soldiers of W-0 unit and treats her staff very well.
* BigBrotherBully: The youngest of her older brothers, Ioan, treats her as a concubine due to his hatred of the idea that he will be forced to marry her at his father's behest. Subverted with her two other brothers Daniel and Stefan, who are both {{Nice Guy}}s. Subverted when it's revealed that Ioan does care for her at heart too when he tries talking her into coming home rather than continue risking her life in Episode 3.
* BlueBlood: Her family was originally Britannian nobility before defecting. [[spoiler:It's also revealed at the end that the castle where the W-0 unit was based at originally belonged to her family's ancestors before they fled Napoleon's forces.]]
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: The Gentle Girl to Akito's Brooding Boy.
* CantHoldHerLiquor: In a PictureDrama. She turns into an laughing drunk off the smell of sake.
* ChildhoodFriends: She and Anna go way back as kids and have been inseparable since.
* CoolBigSis: She develops a sisterly bond with Ayano following the events of the second episode.
* CoolBike: Leila rides one in Episode #2 that looks like [[https://i.imgur.com/ZaMktlD.jpg someone applied KMF tech to build a concept sportbike]]. It's a OneSceneWonder with no impact to the plot, so it doubles as TechnologyPorn.
* CulturedBadass: She reads ''Guilbert's General Essays on Tactics'', a highly influential piece of military literature from 1770 that indirectly predicted the French Revolution, in the corner of a ballroom party in the first episode, acting as an EstablishingCharacterMoment to show that she's not interested in the upper-class grandstanding.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her biological parents were separately assassinated and killed on the same day when she was only six years old. A terrorist planted a bomb while her father gave a speech to the public and her mother died in a car crash shortly after. It's implied that the same assassins that killed her parents went to chase after her too as Leila was forced to run and hide in a snowy forest all alone. She herself would've ''died'' via drowning in icy waters had [[spoiler:C.C.]] not saved her on that night.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Leila is the child of Britannian nobles who disagreed with the Britannian system and defected to the democratic E.U.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Inverted. She's the most feminine character and she doesn't know anything about cooking since she led a comfortable with servants doing the cooking.
* FirstNameBasis: She starts calling Akito by his first name come Episode 3 after she calms him down with a hug when he starts to panic when remembering his DarkAndTroubledPast. By the finale she's shown to be disappointed that Akito still refers to her as "Commander" instead of her own first name [[spoiler:despite both of them having already left the army.]] Akito catches on and corrects himself by finally calling her "Leila" much to her joy.
* {{Foil}}:
** Is one to two Britannian royal siblings from the first series: [[ActualPacifist Euphemia]] and [[AntiHero Lelouch]]. On the side of Euphemia, she's a WideEyedIdealist with a strong attraction to an "Eleven" Pilot of noble blood and a great belief in the good of people and determined to make the world a better place. However, she's much more pragmatic than Euphemia and is an ActionGirl. Meanwhile, like Lelouch she's TheStrategist to an elite team of "Elevens" who fights against a tyranical empire [[spoiler: and possesses a powerful Geass that aids her in defeating the enemy.]] She even has a tragic past which destroyed her family and left her in the care of a non-noble but still very rich family. However, she's [[AFatherToHisMen A Mother To Her Men]] and is much closer to her group, not to mention not as cynical as Lelouch. And, most importantly, unlike the two of them [[spoiler: Leila doesn't die and keeps a positive image to the world instead of being demonized.]]
** She also serves as one to C.C., the female protagonist of the original series. Whereas C.C. is a [[TheCynic world-weary]] immortal witch who was an unloved slave in her childhood, Leila is an [[WideEyedIdealist idealistic]] young woman who was born as the daughter to former Britannian nobles who loved her very much. C.C. loves snarking and messing with other people for her own amusement whereas Leila is mostly pretty much an innocent-minded NiceGirl through and through. Their [[spoiler:acquirement of their Geass]] even mirrors each other's: [[spoiler:both were young girls who, on the brink of death, were rescued by an immortal witch who gives them the power of Geass. The main difference is that C.C. allowed the young Leila the freedom to choose whether she should use her power or not and left her by her lonesome while the nun who gave C.C. her Geass effectively raised her, albeit with the intention to trick her into taking her Code once C.C.'s Geass grew in power.]] Their innermost desires as [[spoiler:reflected by their Geass,]] are even opposite to each other's. C.C. desired to be loved by others [[spoiler:so she got a Geass that made others love her]], a selfish, albeit sympathetic wish, whereas Leila's desire was for friend and foe alike to understand each other, a wish that is very selfless in nature.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Leila [[spoiler:possessing a Geass]] is foreshadowed as early as the first episode. During her confrontation with Anou, the camera does a sudden close up to her left eye, [[spoiler:where its gleam noticeably spins similarly to when a user activates their Geass.]] Another piece of foreshadowing is found during the end credits, where a young Leila is shown standing face to face with a familiar green-haired hooded figure on a lake in the middle of a snowy forest. Episode 3 reveals that [[spoiler:this was the moment when she first contracted with C.C. and gained her Geass.]]
* FormFittingWardrobe: Episode 2 has her in a skintight pilot suit for half the movie that does a bang-up job of showing off her figure.
* GermanicEfficiency: Her birth surname before adoption by Malcal family is von Breisgau, strongly implying Germanic heritage. She is also a competent LadyOfWar through and through.
* GirlyRun: During the last portion of the series, she runs like this to catch up with Akito.
* HarmfulToMinors: She personally witnessed her father getting blown up by a planted bomb then later sees her mother get killed after the car they were riding in a while ago blows up after a traumatic car crash. All only at the age of six. It's a miracle that she's pretty well-adjusted and kind despite all this.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Light blonde hair and very sweet.
* HeroicBSOD:
** [[spoiler:Suffers from one during Episode 4 when she believes Akito had died. Though since they were under invasion at the time, she gets back up after some pep talk from Claus. Afterwards though, she silently cries to herself in her room. That doesn't last long either as she eventually comes to the belief that he's alive as proven by the end.]]
** [[spoiler:Suffers from another one in Episode 5 when the command center crew, including her best friend Anna, are gunned down and killed in front of her by the invading Euro Britannians under Shin's command. Leila could do nothing but stare in shock at her dead comrades' bodies while saying their names. Luckily for her, the Caretaker of Spacetime rewinds time from before it happens as a special favor to her, which saves her friends' lives in the process.]]
* HiddenBuxom: Comparing her in her usual outfit to her FormFittingWardrobe scene, Leila is ''very'' good at dressing up to look like [[MaleGaze she's not stacked like pancakes]].
* InnocentBlueEyes: More purple than blue, but it fits [[spoiler:especially given that her Geass glows blue instead of the typical red unlike most other users seen in the franchise.]]
* JeanneDArchetype: Played straight. She's an ActionGirl leading forces against British oppressors and inspiring people along the way. Smilas even refers to her as their very own Jeanne d'Arc. [[spoiler:He tries to take advantage of this by turning Leila into a martyr whose death would motivate the rest of Europia into supporting him in his bid to take over.]]
* KindHeartedCatLover: Has a cat named Eliza who loves her back just as much.
* LadyAndKnight: The Lady to Akito's Knight.
* LadyOfWar: An elegant and intelligent lady who can still kick ass.
* MagicalEye: [[spoiler:Episode 3 reveals that she contracted with C.C. as a child. However, due to the contract being "incomplete", she doesn't manifest her true power until the final episode, which reveals that her Geass can connect people's consciousnesses to each other, a reflection of her desire for people to understand each other.]]
* NiceGirl: She's one of the few characters with a pleasant demeanor, as long as you aren't a jerkass.
* NoSell: [[spoiler:When Shin tries using his Geass on her to order her to kill herself, she subconsciously activates her own Geass in turn, letting her connect her mind with his. This causes Shin's Geass to bounce back to him, hurting him in the process. It's indicated however, that even if Leila didn't use her Geass to defend herself, Shin's command wouldn't have worked on her either way as his Geass's main condition was that Shin should love the target, while Leila is someone he feels contempt towards.]]
* OfficialCouple: With Akito at the end of the final episode.
* ParentalAbandonment: Both her parents died when she was still a little girl. Her father was assassinated while giving a speech, and her mother died the same day from a car bomb.
* {{Psychometry}}: [[spoiler:As Leila's Geass lets her connect to and share other people's thoughts and feelings, she can also gain access to their memories and the deepest desires within their heart if she so wishes.]]
* RousseauWasRight: A firm believer of this. It's her strong belief in this that allowed her to stare down and rebut Shin's [[HumansAreBastards nihilistic and cynical]] speech to her.
* SupportingProtagonist: Despite Akito being the main character, much of the story is told through her perspective.
* StalkerWithACrush: She has a fascination with Akito right from the start, to the point where she sneaks out in the morning to see what he's doing, only [[EpicFail to get spotted immediately]].
* ShipTease: With Akito. She develops a strong interest in him early on and is the overall closest to him out of all the members of the W-0 unit. Akito for his part is very loyal towards Leila and her feelings for him are eventually reciprocated in the final episode [[spoiler:as she and Akito live out their lives together peacefully and away from the war between the E.U. and Britannia.]]
* SuperpowerLottery: [[spoiler:She won it big time once the nature of her Geass is revealed and elaborated on in side materials. Leila's Geass doesn't just allow her to connect minds: it allows her to create an enormous network of consciousnesses that lets her dominate the connections between them. Among many of the things she's capable of doing with her Geass, with the projection of thoughts, wills, and memories being the main one shown in the series, its most powerful feat is its ability to transport her consciousness to other planes of possibilities and realities, a powerful form of precognition that allows her to connect to those possibilities. Given what is known about C's world, and the fact that it's a maelstrom of human thoughts and consciousnesses, this means that Leila can potentially ''alter reality'' if she so wishes with her Geass ''alone''. What makes this impressive is that, due to having never used her power until only recently, her Geass ''isn't even at its strongest yet'' despite the things it's already capable of doing.]]
* TokenHeroicOrc: [[spoiler:Leila is one of the very few known Geass wielders in the series who is inherently and unambiguously good and selfless. This is reflected in the power of her Geass, which gives Leila the ability to connect people's thoughts with each other as part of her desire for people to understand one another, a wish that is very benevolent in nature. This sets her apart from most other Geass wielders who are ambitious, if still [[WellIntentionedExtremist well-intentioned]] (Lelouch, Charles, V.V., Marianne, Rai, Shamna), primarily motivated by revenge (Lelouch again, Orpheus, Nunnally in the ''Nightmare of Nunnally'' series, Marrybell), ruthless (Rolo), selfish (C.C. in the past, albeit played for sympathy, Rolo) , power hungry (Shin, Shamna again), and crazy (Mao, Shin again).]]
* TheVonTropeFamily: Her birth name is actually Leila von Breisgau. She was adopted into the Malcal family after her parents were assassinated.
* WideEyedIdealist: As mentioned in RousseauWasRight, she's a firm believer in the idea that all humans are good by nature which causes her to clash with Shin and his nihilistic beliefs.
* TheWorkaholic: Anna mention that she's workaholic. Justified since she's not only the commander of W-0 unit, but she has to oversee military missions, supervise day-to-day operations, and also report to her superiors as well.
* YoungAndInCharge: She's only 17 during the events of the [=OVA=] yet is the commander of a European military unit after ousting the previous one.

A Japanese youth in charge of a terrorist cell based out in Europia. Together with his friends Ayano and Yukiya, all three are conscripted into the W-0 unit after their failure to kidnap General Gene Smilas in an attempt to steal the latest Knightmare Frame that the E.U. had to offer. Though initially unimpressed with Akito and Leila, he's quick to warm-up to them after their mission in Slonim.
----
* FireForgedFriends: With Akito and Leila, especially the former, by the end of Episode 2.
* HiddenDepths: Despite his bravado, he admits that he only really wants to find a home for himself and his two friends; he grows to enjoy the company of the old Roma women near Warsaw precisely because their caravan becomes something of a second home to him and the rest of Wyvern.
* HotBlooded: To the point he's the sort of guy who uses punching to settle arguments without any real ill will behind it.
* {{Irony}}: A small one as it never actually gets brought up during the story. Prior to joining the W-0 unit, Ryo was in charge of a group that had precisely ''eleven'' members. This in a series where the Japanese are ''called'' Elevens.
* PetTheDog: He becomes sympathetic towards Akito after finding out that Akito's brother irrationally wanted him killed as a young boy. This eventually leads to the two of them becoming good friends.
* ShipperOnDeck: During Episode 3, the look on his face says it all as he prevents Ayano from following after Leila chases after Akito into the woods.
* SuperDrowningSkills: He doesn't know how to swim and he has to be rescued by the others when he falls into a river.

A young Japanese girl from Ryo's terrorist group. Together with Ryo and Yukiya, she was conscripted into W-0 unit after their failure to kidnap General Smilas.
----
* AncestralWeapon: She has a kodachi passed down to her from the days when her family were still samurai. It's taken by Leila after Ayano and her friends are conscripted into the W-0 unit and later given to Akito so that he could return it once their mission in Slonim was over. Once she finds out, Ayano instead decides to let him keep it in the hope that it'll bring him good luck.
* CantHoldHerLiquor: In a PictureDrama. She turns into an crying drunk just from the smell of sake.
* {{Expy}}: Somewhat serves as one to Kallen from the original series. Although she isn't a HotBlooded [[TheLadette Ladette]], instead being a calmer TomboyWithAGirlyStreak.
* TheHeart: Becomes something of this for Wyvern Squad. She even defeats Jean with a CoolDownHug that convinces her to not launch the missile to destroy Pendragon.
* HopelessSuitor: She likes Akito, who's not interested in anybody but Leila.
* ShamefulStrip: PlayedForLaughs as she receives one in Episode 3 from the Old Gypsies.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Of Ryo's group when they were still terrorists. She was the only one to not try attacking Akito and Leila during their first mission with the excuse of "friendly fire", put more focus on making sure deals went through than antagonizing scumbags, and her initial issues with joining the Wyvern Squad are framed as her worrying they'd just be made into CannonFodder compared to Ryo and Yukiya initially aiming to screw them over.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Between her and Leila she's quite definitely the Tomboy of the two. That doesn't stop having feminine interests however as seen with how she's rather excited to buy a pretty dress in the market and is disappointed when Leila's credit was locked out by the vindictive [[CorruptQuartermaster Anou]].

The third member of Ryo's terrorist group. Yukiya excels at collecting data and handling explosives. Like his boss and Ayano, he's also conscripted into joining the E.U. army's W-0 unit after their failed kidnapping attempt of General Smilas.
----
* BoomerangBigot: A member of an oppressed people is himself racist towards his own people.
* CharacterDevelopment: By the final two episodes he's learned to care deeply about his new friends in the W-0 unit.
* TheCracker: He hacked into a military-grade security system ''undetected'', though he ([[KickTheSonOfABitch mostly]]) settles for less malicious forms of hacking after his HeelFaceTurn.
* {{Determinator}}: As best shown in Episode 5, even while still in recovery from his injuries, the guy simply refuses to just lay down while the rest of the squad are fighting for their lives.
* DisproportionateRetribution: He blew up an entire building full of Elevens just to get revenge on his bullies.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Normally he ''does'' look like a guy, albeit rather boyish despite his age. When with the gypsies however, they repeatedly give him female clothes that, when combined with his thin physique, make him look like a short haired girl.
* EvilGenius: His skills are so good he bypassed the security measures of a Glasgow and forged pilot credentials.
* FreudianExcuse: The students he killed via planting a bomb in the school? A couple of them left him with a large scar spanning almost the full length of his hand.
* FriendlySniper: Both of his machines are long-ranged equipped, and after he warms up to Akito and Leila, he more or less becomes this.
* MadBomber: When not in a Knightmare, bombs seem to be his preferred weapon as he used them to take out his abusers prior to joining Ryo's crew and was ready to blow himself up as a means helping Ryo and Ayano more than once.
* ObliviousToLove: Seems to be completely unaware of Anna's crush towards him.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: He bombed a school that had the same classmates who scarred his hand. The evil part also comes from how he seemed unconcerned with any other students who weren't responsible for abusing him.
* PlayfulHacker: On a good day he's one of these, given his use of cutesy mascot characters when working and treating things like fun games. That said even at the best of times his sense of "fun" is ''very'' questionable, and likely terrifying, as lampshaded by Ayano.
* ScarsAreForever: He has many scars on his body, courtesy of Eleven bullies.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Ryo and Ayano. As mentioned he attempts to blow himself and those around him up should any harm come to them. This later extends to include Akito and Leila, and he shows no qualms with putting his own life on the line if it means helping them.

The scientist responsible for developing the special Knightmare Frame of the W-0 unit the Alexander. She is a childhood friend of Leila.
----
* ACupAngst: In a PictureDrama, she reveals this to be the reason she was covering her chest area when she, Leila and Ayano get drunk off the smell of sake while soaking in a hot spring, though she claims that her chest is normal; Leila and Ayano's are just too big.
* BridgeBunnies: Serves as one during missions.
* CantHoldHerLiquor: In a PictureDrama. She turns into an angry drunk off the smell of sake.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Leila.
* FriendToBugs: Anna is apparently fond of insects, which is likely the inspiration for the Alexander's arthropodic quadruped mode.
* GeekyTurnOn: It's implied that she's attracted to Yukiya because of his intellect and penchant for tech-dabbling.
* GossipyHens: According to Leila, she has a habit of gossiping.
* ShipTease: WordOfGod is that she has a crush on Yukiya.
* TeenGenius: Is only 17 but is the one who helped develop the Alexanders.

* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:Despite being a Britannian mole, he grows to genuinely care about the rest of W-0, and ends up siding with them when Euro-Britannia assaults their base.]]
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite his eccentricities, he's an excellent officer.
* TheCynic: And rather exasperated at his CO's idealism.
* TheLancer: For the W-0 command staff, being far more cynical and lackadaisical than Leila.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:He's working as a spy for Euro-Britannia in exchange for help with his daughter's medical bills. Leila knows this, but respects him too much to turn him in.]]
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Nothing happens to him after he's outed as a double agent for EU-Britannia.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red to Oscar's Blue.

The vice captain of the Guard Troops at W-0's headquarters.
----
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Leads some EU soldiers to fight against Order of St. Michael Knigtmare when they raid W-0 HQ.
* EleventhHourRanger: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He'd long established himself as a member of [=wZERO=] by then, but mostly remained in the command center up until the attack on Castle Weisswolf, at which point he joins the battle himself piloting Leila's Alexander Type-02 and leading the drones. As a result, he's able to sense Akito nearly succumb to Shin's Geass via the Brain Raid System, and calls out to him with the others while he's sword-fighting Shin [[spoiler:via Leila's Geass]].
* NotSoStoic: He tends to be rather serious and straitlaced, but does let his emotions show occassionally. Following the success of the E.U. offensive in Episode 2 he grins and does a fist pump, though he quickly resumes his regular expression.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: When Leila takes command of W-0 from Anou, he has no objections and even helps subdue the latter.
* StoicSpectacles: As mentioned above he's rather serious individual compared to his comrades in the W-0 unit.
