!!Red Shield

An organization dedicated to killing Diva and chiropterans. Leadership of the Red Shield is passed down from father to son, with the current leader being Joel Goldschmidt VI. Many of its members have endured tragic encounters with chiropterans in the field and all members of the Red Shield carry an item containing a piece of red crystal taken from the crystallized body of destroyed chiroptera.

[[folder:In General]]
* GodzillaThreshold: During the Vietnam War, they hit this in the midst of a chiropteran outbreak and end up prematurely awakening Saya from hibernation. Saya does indeed wake up... in a [[UnstoppableRage berserker rage]] that leads to her slaughtering Red Shield agents, chiropterans, and innocent civilians alike.
* MeaningfulName: The name of the organization, as revealed in the light novels.
* TragicKeepsake: Several of their members' red crystals are fragments of their deceased loved ones. Kai ends up wearing a necklace [[spoiler:taken from Riku]], and Saya's katana is eventually reforged with a fragment of [[spoiler:their adoptive father]].
* VampireHunter: Their purpose is to hunt down and kill chiropterans. Of course, since only Saya's blood can actually do so, they largely serve as [[WeAreTeamCannonFodder cannon fodder]].
* WeAreTeamCannonFodder: The name is even a nod to this; their blood and flesh will become a shield for Saya so she can slay the Chiropterans.

Saya Otonashi is the main protagonist of the series ''Blood+''.
----
* ActionDressRip: In the middle of a fight at the Metropolitan Opera House, Saya realizes that the evening gown she wore in is too restrictive and so takes the liberty of tearing most of the lower portion off for more ease of movement, leaving her legs bare.
* ActionGirl: Was one before the series begins, though she doesn't initially know it. She eventually gets back into the habit of kicking monster tail.
* AdaptationalJerkass: After regaining her memories in the manga. She even flatly tells [[spoiler: Riku]] she's going to kill him because he's a [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman chiropteran]]. Considering what she was going through, it's understandable, and she seems to be uncertain about it afterwards. [[WhatTheHellHero Still pretty mean, though, Saya.]]
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:Reviving Riku as a Chevalier turned out to be all for naught when Diva kills him again a while later. This…understandably breaks her.]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: She does like men, but her friendship with some of the female characters almost seem romantic.
* AmnesiacHero: Starts out the series amnesiac, and slowly regains her memories over the course of the first two seasons.
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Even after everything Diva has done and the years Saya spent preparing to kill her, [[spoiler:Saya was very badly-shaken when she realized that she wasn't going to die alongside her sister as she had planned. When only Diva started to crystallize and called out to Saya in shock, a completely horrified Saya immediately ran up to her and tried to keep her petrifying sister from crumbling away. She broke down into anguished sobs and screamed in despair when Diva died anyway. At least part of Saya's grief was finally understanding that Diva had only ever wanted to get the chance to enjoy life and have a family, and realizing the full tragic scope of Diva's life]].
* AnimalsHateHer: Every animal she encounters over the series slinks away at the sight of her.
* AntiHero: Witness the magic of CharacterDevelopment as Saya evolves from being a [[ClassicalAntiHero Classical Anti-Heroine]] to being a KnightInSourArmor to being a [[PragmaticHero Pragmatic Heroine]].
* TheAtoner: Desires to clean up the mess she's made over the years and then die for it. [[spoiler:She doesn't end up killing herself fortunately.]]
* AvengingTheVillain: [[spoiler:In the climax of the manga, Saya is reaching out to comfort a crying Diva when Nathan snaps and kills Diva by stabbing through Saya into Diva, causing Diva to crystallize and shatter to pieces in Saya's arms. Mad with grief, Saya goes on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge and brutally hacks Nathan to death, screaming that he killed her sister.]]
* BadassAdorable: An incredibly formidable chiropteran-slayer, a chiropteran queen herself, and the only hope Red Shield (and the world) has, all in the form of one cute teenager. [[Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Hmm, that actually sounds familiar.]]
* BadassInDistress: [[spoiler: When she's taken away by Solomon while having fainting spells throughout the episode.]]
* TheBerserker: During the Vietnam War, she was awoken prematurely and flew into a rage, slicing and dicing everything she saw indiscriminately, ranging from chiropterans to villagers to even ''children'', with her only vocalizations being indiscernible growls. She was so far gone in this state that she didn't even recognize Hagi, and ended up [[AnArmAndALeg cutting off his arm. Karl met her this way then and wanted to face her again when they met in the present day, but Kai's intervention stopped it.]]
* BigEater: An instance of FridgeBrilliance: [[spoiler:Saya only receives just enough blood to keep from getting thirsty, but her body still needs more energy. Human food isn't quite enough to match up to blood, which is why she burns through calories so quickly and has to eat so much.]]
* BigSisterInstinct: If Riku's in trouble, she wastes no time going after those who are causing him trouble. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, it doesn't save him from getting raped by Diva.]]
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: She runs on this. Despite [[BoomerangBigot being one of them herself]], Saya believes that any and all Chiropterans are evil and must be destroyed, due to the pain they had caused her and her adopted family. She also believes that Red Shield are simply fighting back against them and so aren't doing anything wrong, and later refuses to believe Solomon's HeelFaceTurn simply because he was sired by Diva. Kai even calls her out on it, pointing out that if all Chiropterans are evil and enemies of humanity, then she is as well.
* BloodIsTheNewBlack: You can count the number of times she ''hasn't'' been drenched head to toe in her enemies' blood or her own on one hand.
* BoomerangBigot: Bears considerable disdain for most other chiropterans despite being one of them. See TookALevelInJerkass below. It's probably [[JustifiedTrope justified]] considering most other chiropterans's disregard for human life and bloodthirstiness. Saya was raised to identify as a human. Other chiropterans kill humans without a second thought. Given that, it's only natural that Saya would cling to her alignment with humans and look at other chiropterans with disdain and distrust.
* BoyishShortHair: From at least the Russian Revolution onward. According to the ''Adagio'' manga, after having a nightmare of Diva's rampage at the Zoo and mistaking her reflection for Diva, she freaked out, messily chopped off her hair, and then had Haji fix it, resulting in its current style. [[spoiler:It grows during the TimeSkip, but is cut down at the end of the story.]]
* BreakTheCutie: It starts when she [[spoiler: frees Diva from the tower]], and all goes downhill from there.
* BringMyRedJacket: Starts wearing a maroon coat after the TimeSkip.
* BrokenBird: Once she gets her memories back, she gets broken and bitter. Probably has something to do with three lifetimes's worth of bloodshed, fighting, monsters, evil global conspiracies led by [[spoiler:her twisted twin sister who murdered her father-figure along with most of the people she knew and destroyed her home]], having condemned Haji to a terrible, endless life as [[spoiler:her chevalier]], and struggling to cope with the knowledge that [[spoiler:she herself is just another monster that caused all of this to happen and needs to die as soon as she kills her sister]].
* ButNotTooForeign: Sort of. She's technically French because of her place of "birth," but can easily pass for Japanese.
* CainAndAbel: The heroic Abel to [[spoiler:her twin sister Diva's]] villainous Cain, though in a slight variation [[spoiler:it's the older sibling (Saya is considered the "older" twin sister) who's the good one]] and it's the Abel who's actively trying to kill the Cain. [[spoiler:And succeeds.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: After Episode 32, Saya exhibits a much darker and embittered disposition, having fully regained her memories but in the process of lost hope, as Moses and Lulu both note. She is unwilling to associate or work with anyone other than her chevaliers, not wanting to have to experience losing anyone else from the Red Shield. During the last half of the series, she slowly comes to accept their help.
* CuteBruiser: A cute teenage girl who can fight giant monsters with ease.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She tends to wear dark colors, like maroon and black, but is TheHero of the series.
* DeathSeeker: Ultimately [[SubvertedTrope subverted]]. Saya only allows herself to live in order to kill Diva, and plans to either die with Diva or have Haji find a way to kill her afterward. Despite this, she secretly does want to live. [[spoiler:In the final episode, Haji and Kai persuade her that she doesn't need to kill herself out of guilt or to end the chiropteran threat.]]
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: Her final defeat of [[spoiler: Karl]]. When [[spoiler: Karl]] has her at his mercy and is about to kill her, Saya, realizing she has too much to live for, [[AttackingThroughYourself runs herself through with her own sword]] and skewers [[spoiler: Karl]] as well, killing him.
* DespairEventHorizon: She hits it when Diva [[spoiler:rapes and kills Riku]]; several characters even [[LampshadeHanging remark]] that she has lost hope.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: As the series finale approaches, Cinq Fleches begins putting the EvilPlan into action, which includes transforming the human population into chiropterans and killing Saya to put an end to the threat she poses. Unfortunately, all this is happening at the same time that Saya's body begins preparing for its next thirty-year hibernation--meaning that she suffers from PowerDegeneration that hinders her newly-regained fighting capabilities and might not even be able to confront Cinq Fleches in time before she goes to sleep. [[RuleOfDrama How inconvenient.]]
* DudeMagnet: Just ask [[BodyguardCrush Hagi]], [[NotBloodSiblings Kai]], [[{{Yandere}} Karl]], and [[StalkerWithACrush Solomon]].
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:She goes through over a century of physical and psychological pain, and will have to lose thirty years with her loved ones due to her hibernation first, but with Diva and Amshel dead, Saya finally gets to hang up her sword and live her life in peace with her family.]]
* EasilyForgiven: For her actions during the UsefulNotes/VietnamWar. Granted, she [[UnstoppableRage wasn't in her right mind at the time]], but still, she killed dozens of innocent people, including women and children, chopped off Haji's arm, and personally slew David's father, and all she gets is a slap on the wrist. Almost makes the Red Shield seem like a bunch of {{hypocrite}}s for giving her so much slack while they are convinced that Diva is an irredeemable monster. Again, [[JustifiedTrope justified]] by the circumstances: Saya is normally [[UndyingLoyalty undyingly loyal]] to humanity, but was in a [[UnstoppableRage mindless frenzied state]] at the time (she didn't even recognize ''Haji'') because she had been taken out of hibernation too soon and woke up in the middle of a war-zone crawling with chiropterans, bombs, and gun-fire. When Saya was herself again later on, she was [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone horrified and remorseful]] over what she did in Vietnam, even ''before'' she [[AmnesiacDissonance consciously remembered it]]. The only reason the Red Shield continued to ally with Saya was because it was necessary, seeing as how her blood was the only weapon capable of killing the much more pressing threat--chiropterans in general and Diva and her chevaliers in particular. Still, the Red Shield was pretty wary around Saya at this time because they knew what had happened in Vietnam, and David had a hard time forgiving her even though he knew and accepted that Saya was necessary to their mission and that she hadn't been in control of herself in Vietnam.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Saya seems to have girls crawling into bed with her with alarming frequency: Kaori, Min, Sonya ([[spoiler:though the last [[FaceStealer wasn't actually a girl]]]])... And in the manga, even her own [[spoiler:twin sister]] gets in on the act and acts like a {{Yandere}} towards her!
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: The TimeSkip has her hair with bangs, signifying her loss of innocence. [[spoiler:It's reverted by the end of the series.]]
* FamilyOfChoice: Even after she regains her memories, she considers Kai and Riku her true family.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Or [[spoiler:Chiropteran Queen]], to be more exact. She's a friendly girl who doesn't want to eat you.
* GameFace: When she gets serious or in an UnstoppableRage, Saya's eyes [[GlowingEyesOfDoom glow bright red]] and her [[CuteLittleFangs fangs]] and nails elongate.
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: With [[spoiler:Diva]], Saya is the "smart" sister, being more mature, [[FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling responsible]], and having a [[BoyishShortHair tomboyish haircut]].
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Which enables her to pull off a DeliberateInjuryGambit and survive.
* {{Hallucinations}}: Experiences several early on in the series, mostly about what she did in Vietnam.
* HappilyAdopted: By George Miyagusuku after her latest awakening. By the start of the series, she's been under his care for a year; Saya loves and respects him as though he were her real father, and the feeling is mutual.
* HatesWearingDresses: Contrasting with Diva, who usually wears a PimpedOutDress, Saya usually wears something easy to move and fight in. Downplayed in that she still likes wearing dresses- some of her outfits (including her default season 4 getup) include a skirt. She reluctantly accepts Solomon's offer to wear a simple full-length gown, but is only reluctant to do so more because she's vulnerable and doesn't really have much wardrobe choices at the time, not because it's a dress. She also doesn't mind wearing longer dresses when the occasion rises, usually pink-colored.
* HeartbrokenBadass: Life has definitely ''not'' been kind to her since she [[spoiler: freed Diva]]. Because of this, Saya is determined to kill all chiropterans.
* HeroicBSOD: A big one after [[spoiler:Riku's death]].
* HeroicNeutral: She's initially hesitant to jump into the fray against chiropterans, and remains reluctant to fight early on. She ultimately [[NeutralNoLonger gives in]] once [[spoiler:George, her adoptive father, is killed by them]].
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Female version. A chiropteran who hunts other chiropterans, a fact she prefers not to dwell on.
* IWorkAlone: Develops this attitude after the TimeSkip because she doesn't want to suffer the loss of any more of her loved ones and friends. She eventually snaps out of it.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: She [[spoiler:has a tanner complexion and keeps her hair [[BoyishShortHair short]] and has amber eyes that [[GlowingEyesOfDoom glow]] [[RedEyesTakeWarning bright red]], as opposed to Diva's long hair and OccultBlueEyes.]]
* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler:Riku's death breaks her and it's clear she hates herself for not doing more to save him.]]
* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty: Stopped aging when she turned sixteen. Hilariously, this means she looks younger than Hagi, who she met when he was a 12-year-old boy and she was a 37-year-old teenager, and turned when he was 25 years old.
* ItsAllMyFault: Her word-for-word reaction when she remembers that [[spoiler: she was the one who originally freed Diva.]]
* JerkassRealization: In the {{flashback}}s in episode 22, Saya gets exasperated with Haji for his refusal to cooperate with her and tells him to go back to where he came from, only to be taken aback when Haji breaks down and informs her that he's not at the Zoo by choice and that Joel and Amshel bought him. It's this realization that marks Saya's change from SpoiledBrat to a more self-aware person.
* KissOfLife: [[RuleOfThree Thrice]] with Hagi: the first time (chronologically), it was so that she could give him her blood to recuperate, accidentally [[spoiler:turning him into a chevalier when he was on the brink of death]] but saving his life; the second time (chronologically), it was so that he could give her his blood to trigger her latent memories and powers, enabling her to kill an attacking chiropteran and save the day; the third time [[RunningGag (chronologically)]], they share an emotional kiss after Haji convinces Saya [[spoiler:not to kill herself]].
* KnightInSourArmor: After the TimeSkip. She still fights Cinq Fleches and their machinations, but she's become completely [[BrokenBird broken and bitter]], with several characters remarking that she's [[DespairEventHorizon lost hope]] of actually succeeding.
* LightDarknessJuxtaposition: She has this dynamic with Diva, with Diva being LightIsNotGood and Saya being DarkIsNotEvil. Saya is TheHero who favors dark colors like maroon and black and has dark red eyes, whereas Diva is the BigBad who prefers lighter clothing and has bright blue eyes.
* LightningBruiser: Very agile and strong, and able to take quite a bit of damage without being slowed thanks in part to her HealingFactor.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: When she is recruited back into the Red Shield while amnesiac, both Haji and David repeatedly refuse to tell Saya anything about her past or mission, insisting that she has to remember on her own. Of course, this results in Saya being forced into horrific bloodshed and countless BreakTheCutie moments without even knowing ''why'', but either way...
* MercyKillArrangement: She made Haji promise to kill her once they finally succeed at killing Diva, in order to end the chiropteran threat once and for all. [[spoiler:Ultimately, however, Haji and Kai convince her not to go through with it and go on living.]]
* MistressAndServantBoy: With Hagi. [[spoiler:It's a literal example as he has to listen to everything she says.]]
* MusclesAreMeaningless: She's tiny, but can easily overpower and chop chiropterans in half. Since she's a Chiropteran [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking Queen]], this makes sense.
* MustMakeAmends: The entire series chronicles her attempts to kill Diva and make up for the mistake she made by [[spoiler:releasing her in the first place]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Her reaction to killing some of her allies while in her BerserkMode and after being forced to [[spoiler:turn Riku into a chevalier to save his life.]]
* NeutralNoLonger: Having previously been extremely hesitant to jump into the fray against chiropterans, Saya decides to go with Haji and the Red Shield after she [[spoiler:loses George]].
* NiceGirl: Especially at the start of the series, Saya is a very selfless and positive girl who tries to help anyone she encounters and is easy to befriend. although after Riku's death she does steer towards being more of a JerkassWithAHeartOfGold at times.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: By [[spoiler:freeing Diva, who had been tortured and experimented on until that point and transformed into a PsychopathicManchild by the scientists who found them, from her confinement in the tower, Saya set loose the BigBad who would go on to slaughter humanity for the hell of it for the next hundred-plus years]]. The entire series revolves around Saya and her pals trying to [[spoiler:hunt down and kill Diva and]] correct Saya's mistake.
* ObliviousToLove: She had no idea that Haji was in love with her throughout the past hundred-plus years of their association. While Hagi is TheStoic and so at least ''somewhat'' believable, she ''also'' never catches onto ''Kai's'' blatant [[NotBloodSiblings non-brotherly]] feelings for her. Factor in her harem of girls she doesn't show anything but friendship towards and for a while there, Solomon and Karl were the only ones she seemed aware of as having romantic feelings for her (and possibly vice-versa, in Solomon's case) at all. When you know enemies you've only just met have feelings for you, but not any of the friends you've spent a year or more in the company of, you know you're ObliviousToLove. Or maybe you don't know, since that's the whole point of the trope.
* OnlyICanKillHim: While Saya will hunt and kill any chiropteran hostile she can find out there and her goal is to work with the Red Shield in helping end the chiropteran threat overall, she sees the task of killing Diva as her ''personal'' duty and tries to dissuade others from joining her in her quest, not just because it's dangerous or a matter of ItsPersonal (though considering the grief Diva has caused her, that certainly figures into it as well), but out of pragmatism and a sense of responsibility--all chiropterans are incredibly dangerous and basically immortal, but there ''are'' known ways to kill them without involving Saya. Diva is another story: since she and Saya are chiropteran queens, the blood of one sister is the only sure-fire way to kill the other. With everything that's happened, Saya has concluded that the only reason she can permit herself to stay alive is to do so just long enough to [[MurderSuicide kill Diva first.]]
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: What she starts the series as, aside from being anemic and [[AmnesiacHero amnesiac]].
* PassionateSportsGirl: Saya is an ActionGirl in modern times who's dedicated to fighting and killing monsters much bigger than her, and is still an active person when she wasn't fighting; when living at the Zoo, she fenced for sport, and when living with the Miyagusukus, she was running [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_jump high jumps]] at school.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Complementing her sporty side and short hair, pink is Saya's favorite color. She's the red queen associated with pink & red roses, often wears something either red or pink on her outfit, and [[spoiler: chooses pink as the color for the key to reopen Omoro.]]
* PowerDegeneration: A non-fatal variation. As Saya nears her next hibernation period, she suffers from bouts of fainting spells and her HealingFactor begins to lose its potency.
* ProHumanTranshuman: Having been RaisedByHumans, Saya is on the side of humanity no matter what.
* ThePromise:
** She made Hagi promise her [[spoiler:that he would kill her after she kills Diva]], and plans to [[spoiler:pull a MurderSuicide with Diva's babies to follow through in a fit of despair that she didn't die with her sister as she seemingly intended]]. Fortunately, Hagi instead [[spoiler: manages to talk her out of it and persuade her to live on]].
** In the English dub, before she leaves [[spoiler:Diva's]] body, Saya [[spoiler:touches her hand and internally promises her that she will [[TakeCareOfTheKids care for Diva's and Riku's children]], giving them the love and protection in their upbringing in the human world Diva never had]].
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: Most noticeably with Kaori, Saya's best friend when she's living in Okinawa, though she has some shades of it with Min as well (and to be honest, most girls [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer Saya]] befriends). Kaori acts almost like a supportive girlfriend cheering Saya on at her high jump practice and waiting for Saya to come home, and when they do reunite, they're both reduced to tears.
* RapeAndRevenge: She's been pursuing Diva for over a hundred years to kill her. [[spoiler:Diva's rape and murder of Riku just gave Saya an added incentive.]]
* RaisedByHumans: At birth, she was adopted and raised by the original Joel Goldschmidt, who treated her as his own daughter. Upon her awakening a year prior to the series, George Miyagusuku also took her in. Her [[UpbringingMakesTheHero upbringing]] is the reason Saya is a ProHumanTranshuman.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She has pale skin and dark hair, especially in contrast to her brothers.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: [[spoiler:She's almost two hundred years old. Though with all her long naps and amnesia, she doesn't have much built up wisdom.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Inverted. The red-eyed [[DarkIsNotEvil Saya]] is the hero pitted against blue-eyed [[LightIsNotGood Diva]].
* RedIsHeroic: She's the main character of the series, has red eyes, and wears a dark red coat after the TimeSkip.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Kai, Mao, and (ironically) Diva's Red. Saya is the calmer, sometimes brooding sister who reflects a lot. It's played straight when you see how the twins deal with anger; Saya is prone to aggression and shouting matches and is rather infamous in Red Shield for her berserk mode.
* ReluctantWarrior: Early on, she isn't too keen on entering the fray and fighting chiropterans, though she gradually embraces the duty.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: A pink scarf is part of her evening gown ensemble at the Metropolitan Opera House fight, but she loses it almost immediately in the battle.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Played with. Though most promotional materials and video games depict her in her school uniform, she mostly wears casual clothes in the series itself.
* SpoiledBrat: You wouldn't believe it from how she is today, but she was this once. She used to be very bratty due to her upbringing under the first Joel Goldschmidt, but mellows out through her friendship with Haji.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Despite her long-running mission to kill Diva, Saya still feels sorry for her due to her FreudianExcuse. [[spoiler: When she finally succeeds at killing her, she considers it a hollow victory and breaks down in tears.]] Even moreso in the manga, where Diva is an AdaptationalNiceGuy who ''didn't'' [[spoiler:rape and kill Riku]], making her less vile to both the audience and the characters; when Diva [[spoiler:breaks down sobbing, promising to stop crying if Saya calls her by the name that she gave her, Saya immediately reaches out to console her.]]
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler: Her reaction to realizing she's a chiropteran.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with in a weird way.]] For a while, Saya is is only really useful in a fight if she slips into one of her {{Unstoppable Rage}}s. However, she actually ''was'' a skilled fighter before the series began, and has only deteriorated because she [[IdentityAmnesia lost her memories]], making this more of an in-universe example of BadassDecay. ''However'', when Saya finally remembers who she is, she remembers how to deal with chiroptera... which spells bad news for any weird blood-sucking bat monsters dumb enough to leave a trail.
* TookALevelInCynic: Following the death of [[spoiler:Riku]], she spends the next several episodes '''incredibly''' bitter and scowling, saying everything in a TranquilFury and showing resentment at all times, yelling at people and constantly angry. It ends when her repressed anger and self-loathing comes out after being confronted for this ugly behavior and she finally breaks down crying in a ''[[BeneathTheMask wreck]]'' of tears.
* UnstoppableRage: During the Vietnam War, Red Shield, out of desperation, prematurely awaken her from her hibernation to fend off a chiropteran outbreak. Things go horribly wrong when Saya wakes up in a berserker rage and ends up slaughtering humans and chiropteran alike. Prior to regaining her memories, Saya is only really useful in a fight once she enters another berserker rage. Kai is the only one so far who can snap her out of her frenzy by just calling out to her.
* VegetarianVampire: Sort of. Saya largely refrains from drinking any kind of blood, human or animal, and gets the blood she needs through blood transfusions instead.
* WeakButSkilled: Since Saya refrains from eating people, she is barely stronger than ordinary humans, but is able to hold her own against other chiropterans due to martial arts skills.
%%* WhatHaveIBecome
* WillfullyWeak: She suppresses her natural abilities and refrains from drinking blood as much as possible; as a result, she's barely stronger than a human. If she tapped into her powers and had enough blood, she'd be [[LightningBruiser Diva's]] equal.
* YouAreNotAlone: After the TimeSkip, she isolates herself from the Red Shield, not wanting to lose any more loved ones. Her friends repeatedly work to help her understand that it's not just ''her'' burden to bear alone.

Hagi is Saya's first and only living chevalier and also her love interest.
----
* AbsurdlySharpClaws: His claws can easily cut through flesh and bone; in episode 13, he even effortlessly chops a chiropteran's head off with them.
* BadassLongcoat: A downplayed example, but his old-fashioned tailcoat does cause him to cut a striking figure, especially in combat.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: He takes a protective liking to Saya's adoptive younger brother Riku for offering him food.
* BodyguardCrush: On Saya. [[spoiler:It's reciprocated at the end of the series.]]
* CannotSpitItOut: Surely taking 130 years to tell the woman you love how you feel must be some kind of record.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: {{Implied}}. Haji's parents sold him to Joel I and Amshel for a ''loaf of bread''.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Wears dark clothes and is firmly on Saya's side.
%%* DeliberateInjuryGambit
* {{Determinator}}: Absolutely nothing stands in his way if Saya's safety is threatened.
* DistressedDude: Spends his time in the prequel manga ''City of the Night Walkers''/''Blood+: Kowloon Nights'' unconscious, in chains, and [[HoYay in the arms of another man]] until he snaps out of his funk and wipes the floor with his captors.
* DyingConfessionOfLove: [[spoiler: Finally confesses his feelings for Saya before he is apparently killed in the MET bombing. Subverted, as the final scene of the anime reveals he survived.]]
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:He manages to escape the MET bombing, meaning he'll reunite with Saya in 3 decades.]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: He's initially an ambiguous and somewhat threatening figure, an impression certainly helped along by his dark hair and pale complexion. Even once it becomes clear that he's a heroic and utterly trustworthy person, his extreme stoicism and chevalier abilities - as well as the fact that he keeps feeding Saya his blood - makes him a bit otherworldly.
* ExtremeDoormat: "If that is your wish" is his {{Catchphrase}}. Kai calls him out on it. [[spoiler: In the finale, he would have just stood by and let Saya kill herself if Kai hadn't stepped in]].
* FlechetteStorm: Seemingly able to produce an endless supply of throwing knives out of nowhere.
%%* GoodOldWays
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: As a chevalier he can recover from injuries that would've killed any human, and the series takes full advantage of this fact, meaning that Hagi gets maimed for drama pretty often. At one point he's impaled by what appears to be a railroad tie.
* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler:Loses an arm to protect Saya in the FinalBattle, but is still able to kill Amshel. And if the epilogue is any indication, he lived.]]
* HappinessInSlavery: He is unshakingly loyal to Saya to the bitter end, and not just because he's biologically hardwired to be as such as a Chevalier.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: [[spoiler: He hides his Chiropteran body parts, such as his claw and wings, because Saya expressed horror at them when she first saw them. He'll bare the claw for fighting, but it's only at the very end of the series that things get serious enough for him to reveal his wings in order to save Saya.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser: A [[SenselessViolins cello case]] and with a cello in it.
* InstrumentOfMurder: The cello is more invincible than Hagi is!
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Despite his love for Saya, he believes that, as her chevalier, his duty is to protect and help her and not reveal his feelings for her.
* IWillWaitForYou: During Saya's hibernation periods, he kills time until she wakes up. [[spoiler:Still holds true in the final scene.]]
%%* KissOfLife: Twice with Saya.
* LivingForeverIsAwesome: Haji is proof that this trope is not for loners; he appreciates his immortality because without it he couldn't serve his mistress when she's awake or watch over her when she hibernates. Though one must wonder what he does during the latter.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Long hair and is very much pretty.
* MistressAndServantBoy: With Saya before and after the TimeSkip.
* MrFanservice: Lampshaded in the anime when Saya has to infiltrate a Vietnamese boarding school and Hagi poses as a gardener to protect her. Cue squealing fangirls.
* MysteriousProtector: No one really knows about him except those connected with him in the past.
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: [[spoiler:Survives the bombing of the MET despite the odds being real bad.]]
* OddFriendship: Him and Riku could count, [[spoiler:especially after the latter turns into a Chevalier]].
* OneWingedAngel: Curiously, he doesn’t seem to have a full-body Chiropteran form as other Chevaliers do. His hand is permanently stuck as a Chiropteran claw (because Saya cut it off when she was in a blind rage from being woken from hibernation too early) and he has wings as well, but he never makes a full transformation. It’s never addressed if he’s simply unable to or if he can but chooses not to. Granted, he’s one of the strongest characters in the series even without this power, but it seems strange that he never exhibits an ability that every other Chevalier in the series does.
* PartialTransformation: The most we ever see of his chiropteran form are his [[WolverineClaws claws]] and [[WingedHumanoid wings]].
* PrettyBoy: In the novelization Mao grumbles about how he's so pretty, it's annoying because it's so distracting.
* ThePromise: Promised to [[spoiler:kill Saya]] after she kills Diva. Of course, afterwards, he [[spoiler: breaks that promise and convinces her to live on.]]
* TheQuietOne: Doesn't utter a word unless he has to.
* RedRightHand: His right hand is permanently Chiropteran due to Saya chopping it off during the Vietnam War due to being in a rage.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: He's been around for a long time just like Saya.
* SenselessViolins: Cellos in this case.
* ShapeshifterModeLock: Haji's right hand is permanently Chiropteran after a [[BerserkMode berserk]] Saya [[AnArmAndALeg chopped it off]] during the Vietnam War. He hides it by keeping it wrapped up in bandages, only exposing it when TheGlovesComeOff.
* SlipknotPonytail: His hair coming loose from its ribbon is invariably a sign that Hagi is taking a nasty beating.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Hagi or Haji?
* TheStoic: He's quiet and never says anything without being asked.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Indubitably. He's tall and one of the prettiest characters in the show.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Saya. He never once disobeys her, [[spoiler:until the end and it pays off.]]
* WalkingTheEarth: While Saya spends decades hibernating, he wanders the Earth alone, waiting for the day when she wakes up. While it’s strongly implied that he never ventures far from Saya’s resting place, one has to wonder how he keeps himself busy for such long periods of time. Could have made for a great spinoff series, or at least some filler episodes.
* WillfullyWeak: Suppresses a lot of his natural abilities because when Saya first saw him use them, she was terrified. He also basically starves himself of blood, which is why he is not as strong as the other chevalier, though if he tapped into his natural abilities and had enough blood, he would probably be second only to Amshel.
* WingedHumanoid: The final portion of the series reveals he has wings, but still retains his human self.
%%* TheWorfEffect
* YouShallNotPass: [[spoiler:Protects Saya from Amshel and is the one who ultimately takes him out.]]

George Miyagusuku is an Okinawan-American US Army veteran and the adoptive father of Kai, Riku and Saya.
----
* BadassNormal: US Army Veteran and it shows in flashbacks.
%%* BoisterousBruiser
* CoolOldGuy: He is a kindly adoptive father to Riku, Kai and Saya, doing everything in his power to raise them so they will be happy and even [[spoiler:spends his dying moments giving them some words of wisdom.]]
* DyingAsYourself: [[spoiler:As he dies, he makes things clear he loves his children to death.]]
* ParentalSubstitute: All three of the children in his care lost their parents [[spoiler:a long, loooong time ago, in Saya's case]] and he does all he can to give them a good home life as their adoptive father.
* PapaWolf: When Saya is hesitant, George doesn't hesitate to take her sword and attack a chiropteran to protect her. He gets slashed across the chest for it, but points for effort.
* SacrificialLion: Dies [[spoiler:early on in the series, asking to be killed by Saya before becoming a Chiropteran from Delta 67.]]
* SupremeChef: He is a very good cook which is why he chose to run a restaurant.
* TheVietnamVet: He was a soldier in the Vietnam War, and personally witnessed Saya's berserk rampage during that time. It ended with David's mortally wounded father entrusting him with Saya's care as she went back into hibernation.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: Is one of the most compassionate characters in the entire series, protecting his children even in the face of nightmarish monsters that he as a regular human stands no chance against. [[spoiler:Sadly, he doesn’t last very long.]]

Kai Miyagusuku is one of the main protagonists of the series. He is the adopted son of George Miyagusuku hence, Riku and Saya's "elder" brother.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: After the TimeSkip, he uses special incendiary rounds that explode on contact; slightly better than conventional bullets against [[GoodThingYouCanHeal chiropterans]], but not by much.
* AdoptivePeerParent: [[spoiler:In the epilogue after he adopts Diva's daughters.]]
* BadassBiker: While it's shown when he's at home normally, he's capable of using it to navigate areas and get to his foes.
* BadassNormal: After the TimeSkip, even though he is still a normal human being without any special abilities, he becomes competent enough to stand his own against a chiropteran for a time, just like David and Lewis.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Saya and Riku, naturally. He also seems to get along very well with kids who aren't related to him.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler: Loses Irene and then Riku in the space of a couple of days, this is after he loses his father as well. In particular, Riku's death destroys Kai to the point where he can only utter Riku's name, this is made worse by the fact that he witnessed Diva horrifically murder Riku but couldn't stop her. However, after the Time Skip he actually becomes a more well adjusted person in honour of those he lost]]
* CharacterDevelopment: [[spoiler:Riku's death changes Kai.]] He faces his responsibilities, hones his skills to be ready, bears the torch of Red Shield to keep hope alive. He believes that Saya will come and his faith pays off.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Kai [[spoiler:lives to return to his family's restaurant and presumably accomplishes his dream of running it with his family]], although the ones he gets are admittedly not exactly the ones he was expecting. Kai [[spoiler:loves the girls like his own regardless]]. Plus, he has the promise of [[spoiler:his sister one day waking up and coming home]] to look forward to...
%%* EmoTeen:
* FieryRedhead: He has red hair and it's quick for him to get in on the action, whether if he's capable or not.
* HappilyAdopted: Both he and Riku were adopted by George after their biological parents died.
* TheHeart: Becomes this for Saya and Haji after the timeskip, trying to make them work again with the Red Shield and leave behind their lonely attitude.
* HotBlooded: Never without wanting to be involved in the action to help his sister, even if it's a bad idea.
* IdiotBall: [[spoiler:Doesn't tell Riku to follow him, even though he knows Diva's after him.]]
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: To Saya. It's clear he loves her more than as his adopted sister, but will steer aside for Haji.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Before the timeskip he was very rude and stubborn, an attitude that annoys David greatly. He becomes better after the time skip, though.
%%* LoveHurts: Both romantic and familial.
%%* MotorcycleOnTheCoastRoad
* NotBloodSiblings: Kai is ''very heavily'' implied to have romantic feelings for Saya. That Saya clearly sees him as a brother, coupled with the show and the characters' emphasis on family, may make some viewers a little uncomfortable with the [[BrotherSisterIncest incestuous overtones]]. It makes sense when you realize that they met and became siblings only a year before the series starts and, well, they ''are'' hormone-addled teenagers. (Kai is, anyway.) Kai never really expresses his feelings to Saya, leaving it up in the air whether he still wanted to pursue a romantic relationship with her in the future. It's hinted by the end of the series that he has accepted that Saya loves him but in a platonic way and that his crush on her has turned into something more familial... which was probably helped by [[spoiler:losing every other member of their family]]...
* ObliviousToLove: Ironically, just as Saya doesn't notice his romantic attraction towards her, Kai doesn't realize that Mao loves him and is confused when she kisses him.
* ParentalSubstitute: [[spoiler: To Diva's daughters. Guess he takes after George.]]
* SayMyName: [[spoiler:Utters Saya's name when she goes into her BerserkerMode. It calms her down.]]
%%* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Riku's Sensitive Guy.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:In a sense. Kai is the only sibling who remains active from beginning to end as Riku died and Saya will have to hibernate for 3 decades.]]
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:Kai calling out for Saya as she goes into her BerserkerMode helps calm her down and prevents her from dying to Karl.]]
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: [[spoiler:His first meeting with Diva after Riku's death has him call her this.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: After the timeskip. He became much more useful and is capable of destroying Corpse Corps and design a plan to defeat James.
* TookALevelInKindness: After [[spoiler: Riku's death]] he matures greatly and becomes a much more nice person in comparison with his past self.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:He keeps his late adoptive father's gun and later a piece of his brother's crystal.]]
* UseYourHead: Using a combination of this and GetAHoldOfYourselfMan is probably his most notable CharacterTic in the manga.

Riku Miyagusuku is the adopted brother of Kai and Saya, and the youngest of George Miyagusuku's three adopted children.
----
* AbsurdlyYouthfulFather: Had he [[spoiler: actually lived, he would have been 13 when his daughters were born.]]
* AdaptationalBadass: While in the anime, he [[spoiler: dies before being able to develop his Chevalier powers]], in the manga, he manages to [[spoiler: master them and becomes a powerful ally of the Red Shield.]]
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: The youngest of the Miyagusuku kids and the youngest member of Red Shield.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:It all went downhill after Saya is forced to do an EmergencyTransformation. It's at its worst when Diva's chasing him and is unable to prevent her from getting close to him.]]
* ChildrenAreInnocent: He's portrayed as much calmer and sweeter than his brother. [[spoiler:Makes his death all the more heartbreaking.]]
* DeathOfAChild: [[spoiler:He was 12 when he was raped and murdered by Diva.]]
* EmergencyTransformation: Made into [[spoiler: Saya's chevalier when she feeds him her blood to save his life after Diva drains his blood at the Zoo. It ultimately doesn't amount to much as he's killed a little later.]]

* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler:Diva kills Riku after raping him.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Briefly revived, but is killed not long after.]]

* NiceGuy: He is a kind and gentle boy. Even the reclusive Hagi takes a protective liking to him after he offered him food.
* OutWithABang: He is [[spoiler:raped and murdered by Diva.]]

David is a member of the Red Shield. He works as an agent assigned to direct collaboration with Saya.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: Unlike in the anime, David is shown to be cold and harsh towards Saya in the manga. He sees her nothing but a weapon.
%%* BabiesEverAfter: With Julia.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Is almost always seen wearing a classy black suit as befits a covert operative.
* BadassNormal: Unlike Saya, he hunts vampire-like monsters without any inherent special abilities.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His father died when he would have been just a little boy. He served in the military in a special operations capacity but his entire unit was wiped out in a Chiropteran attack, leaving him the SoleSurvivor. It’s no wonder why he’s determined to see the Chiropteran threat destroyed.
* GoodIsNotNice: He ''completely pounds'' Kai early on to teach him a lesson about the kind of world they're in and forces Saya to fight despite full knowledge that it's tearing her apart. [[spoiler:Kai returns the favour a year later to show how he's grown.]]
* DrowningMySorrows: [[spoiler:During his BSOD. The key to saving the world is seemingly gone and believes it's all over. He gets better.]]
* HeroicBSOD: After [[spoiler:Red Shield's headquarters are destroyed, Riku is killed, and Saya disappears without a trace]].
* HesBack: When Saya and Haji return after the TimeSkip.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: David is stern, but he cares greatly for his comrades.
* TheMenInBlack: He certainly fits the description. A former military man recruited into a top secret organization charged with neutralizing supernatural threats and covering up the existence of said threats? He even sports the classic black suit and tie, never sports any ominous shades, though.
* OddFriendship: Seems to have an odd sort of bond with Haji, of all people, and is something that, while subtle, actually occurs throughout much of the series.
* OnlyOneName: Despite being a prominent character, we never find out what his surname is.
* RedBaron: "David the Invincible"
* TakingTheBullet: For Julia, which facilitates her return to the Red Shield.

Lewis is a regular member of Red Shield and is responsible for providing gadgets and transportation for the organization's operatives.
----
* BadassNormal: Like most of Red Shield, he fights quite well against Chiropterans despite being completely human.
* BigEater: He loves to eat.
* BigFun: The carefree Lewis is the biggest case of comic relief in the series, and that's taking into account that the series is very serious.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Despite his appearance and comic relief status, he is just as capable of fighting against Chiropterans as David is. His combat prowess can most likely be traced to his past as a CIA officer.
%%* GadgeteerGenius
%%* LargeHam: Especially in the English dub.
* FormerlyFit: He’s definitely on the heavy side these days, but as a younger man he was a skilled CIA operative and in great shape as evidenced by a photo he shows Okamura (sadly, we the audience don’t get to actually see it).
* TheMenInBlack: He may not fit the traditional archetype in quite the same way that David does, but he still qualifies given that he’s a member of a top secret organization tasked with neutralizing supernatural threats and covering up their existence. It helps that he’s actually a former CIA officer.
* NiceGuy: A cheerful and happy man.
* OnlyOneName: For unknown reasons, we never find out what his surname is.

* HandicappedBadass: He ends up [[spoiler: paraplegic thanks to Karl, but it doesn't stop him from leading the Red Shield]].

Mao Jahana is Kai's classmate in Koza Commerce High School who is obsessed with him. She is the daughter of the head of the Jahana Yakuza.
----
* ActionSurvivor: While she doesn't fight on the front lines, she also is one of the survivors of the whole conflict through sheer pluck.
* DemotedToExtra: Only appears as a very minor character in the manga, first bullying Saya because she's jealous that she lives with Kai, then recruits Saya to be in the school play in hopes that Kai will come and watch.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: She starts the series very possessive of Kai and jealous of Saya. Eventually, she acknowledges that Saya is more important to him, and she moves on.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Abrasive, blunt, and very tsuntsun aside, Mao is a genuine good girl in the end.
* MatchmakerCrush: Despite having feelings for him, Mao helps Kai confess his love to Saya.
* OddCouple: With Okamura; the YakuzaPrincess and the reporter of the supernatural.
* PluckyGirl: Her crush goes on a trip with a secret agency? No worries, she'll just gank some money from her father and follow him, and eventually join said agency in the process.
* RunningGag: Pulling cigarettes out of Okamura's hand before he gets a chance to smoke them.
* ShipTease: Despite her crush on Kai, she has a few moments with Okamura.
* ShipperOnDeck: Makes a couple of attempts to set Saya and Kai up during season four.
* ShoeSlap: When she was wearing sandals in a warmer climate as opposed to her usual boots, she took one off and chucked it at the back of Kai's head to get his attention after he aggravated her.
* StalkerWithACrush: Mao steals fifty million yen from her mob boss father's untraceable cash stash to follow Kai across the world.
* {{Tsundere}}: Dere for Kai, tsun for everyone else, ''especially'' Okamura. [[spoiler: At the end of the series, she prefers to continue traveling with Okamura, and keep him from smoking, instead of going home.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Mao chews Saya out for not bothering to tell anyone [[spoiler:her next hibernation cycle]] is approaching when they've been working their butts off to help her.

----
* BadassBookworm: While he never fights, Okamura proves to be extremely brilliant, being as close as Red Shield when it came for information.
* {{Determinator}}: Nothing stops Okamura from following a good story.
* DisappearedDad: His dad was a war photographer and has long died.
* GuileHero: He figures out things through just looking and researching like a normal (though also determined) reporter around the same time as Red Shield and was only a little behind them in knowledge by the time he officially joins them.
* IntrepidReporter: He chases the vampire monster sightings across continents to be like his father.
%%* OddCouple: With Mao.

* MegaCorp: Though Cinq Flèches is largely described as a pharmaceutical enterprise, it has enough resources to be active in other industries, such as technology, food production, military contracting, and, of course, Chiropteran-based genetic manipulation. They even own and run an all-girls high school in Vietnam.

Diva is the main antagonist of Blood+. She is the younger twin sister of Saya, and the greatest sworn enemy of the Red Shield and Saya. Like Saya, Diva is a pure-blooded Chiropteran queen born from the Chiropteran Mummy.
----
* AdaptationalDumbass: In the manga adaptation of [[AnimeFirst the anime]], Diva is so oblivious that she cheerfully misinterprets her fights with Saya as games and doesn't understand that Saya is honestly trying to kill her until Saya spells it out to her ''over a century later''. While she behaves like a PsychopathicWomanchild and lets her chevaliers do most of the work in both series, in the anime Diva is fully aware of Saya's intentions, is shown to be perfectly capable of holding intelligent, serious conversations without throwing tantrums or crying as her manga counterpart likely would, and has a more devious, manipulative personality overall.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: While both versions of Diva are [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Woobie Destroyers of Worlds]] and {{Psychopathic Manchild}}ren, the manga practically breaks its back trying to make her a more sympathetic character.
** The anime's Diva has a sad backstory, but is thoroughly and unrepentantly evil; she combines LackOfEmpathy and a huge sadistic streak, gets a kick out of emotionally torturing Saya, and has no qualms with trying to killing her, even looking forward to it. The only people she seems to honestly care for are [[spoiler:her unborn daughters, and even that is only because they symbolize the family she craves]].
** The manga iteration is portrayed as much more innocent in her own deranged way. She deeply loves Saya, Amshel, and Charles (the manga's version of Karl), is friendly enough to Riku when they get to talking, and genuinely doesn't seem to understand the difference between right and wrong. She is nowhere near as antagonistic towards Saya, thinking their fights are them playing with each other and wanting to see her and live together in peace. Even after she decides to kill Saya, it's still played sympathetically with Diva deciding to do it out of heartbreak and betrayal, [[spoiler:and even when she has Saya at her mercy she can't bring herself to actually go through with it.]] Perhaps the biggest change the manga makes is excising Diva's most heinous crime, [[spoiler: the rape and murder of Riku,]] and she has no interest in even trying it until [[AdaptationalVillainy Solomon]] tries to force them into it.
* AlasPoorVillain: Diva is an AxCrazy PsychopathicManchild, is responsible for more than one massacre, and [[spoiler:raped Riku, a boy in his early teens, to impregnate herself]]. But through it all, this is someone who was separated from her twin sister at birth and locked up in a cage at the top of a tower for fifty years, with her only human contact being men who saw her as nothing but a lab rat. [[spoiler:Her death scene, in which she [[GoOutWithASmile smiles]] and caresses her unborn daughters while imagining herself holding them, along with Nathan's [[MotiveRant monologue]], drives the point home, and Saya breaks down in tears and ''screams'' in anguish while standing over her body]].
* AllWomenLoveShoes: Downplayed in that, unlike how this trope stereotypically plays out, said shoes are a pair of sneakers; this doesn't take away from the fact that Diva's devotion to wearing said shoes for the rest of an episode comes after ''killing'' the man who wore them.
%%* AxCrazy
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: Let's face it: if you were locked up in a tower room and used as a lab rat for the first fifty years of your life, you'd most likely be as screwed up as Diva.
* BeyondRedemption: While Saya was already focused on killing Diva to begin with, it was more out of obligation and duty because [[TheAtoner she was the one who set Diva free to begin with]]. Then Diva [[spoiler:[[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil raped and murdered Riku]], an innocent little boy, to [[StalkerWithATestTube impregnate herself]]. She even ''smiles'' at his fear and revels in the rush his death gave her, rubbing her pleasure in Saya's face.]] From there, ItsPersonal, and Saya becomes obsessively determined to take Diva out once and for all.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: After the timeskip, when she changes her face and her body to look [[spoiler:like Riku]].
* BigBad: She is the most powerful enemy in the show and stopping her is Red Shield's goal throughout. Despite this, Diva simply takes a childlike interest in the destruction she causes. [[spoiler:This is eventually subverted when it's revealed Amshel was merely using her for his own goals]].
* BrownNote: Her singing activates Delta 67, a chemical agent Cinq Fleches works on infecting most of the population with. When it activates inside people, it transforms them into mindless, [[{{Mook}}s low-level]] chiropterans. [[OhCrap Diva becomes a famous singer whose performances are broadcast across the world.]]
* CainAndAbel: The villainous Cain to Saya's heroic Abel, though in a slight variation Diva is considered the "younger" twin sister and it's the Abel who's actively trying to kill the Cain.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Towards Saya in the manga, though it's familial rather than romantic. At the Zoo, she encourages Saya's JerkAss behavior to Hagi and says he'd reject Saya if he knew the truth about her, because she wants her sister's attention all to herself. It doesn't work when Hagi sees Saya regenerating (which is BloodierAndGorier than in the anime, and could reasonably have scared him off) but continues to be kind, and Diva becomes increasingly jealous as Saya spends more and more time with him, away from her. It culminates in Diva gleefully murdering Hagi to MurderTheHypotenuse, calling him a nuisance, after Saya frees her and Hagi mistakes her for Saya (meaning Diva is responsible for Hagi's EmergencyTransformation into Saya's chevalier, rather than an accidental fall off a cliff that day as in the anime). In the present day, Diva reacts to the news that Saya now hates her and is trying to kill her by deciding to kill Saya... but not before turning humans into chiropterans in front of Saya out of sheer spite. [[spoiler:In the end, Diva redeems herself when she sees Saya does still care for her and stops Saya from killing herself, lovingly telling her to live, when they could have been TogetherInDeath.]]
* CuteAndPsycho: She childishly wrecks a dress so that Amshel will have to get her a new one, like a spoiled daughter. She also kills a man just because she wanted his shoes.
* DarkActionGirl: As an EvilCounterpart to Saya, Diva's a lethal fighter.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: Tries this on Kai by creepily imitating [[spoiler: Riku]] as a way to [[WeCanRuleTogether convince him to join her.]]
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Initially averted but ultimately downplayed. [[spoiler:Her rape and murder of Riku is shown as a genuinely horrific event that disgusts and traumatizes all who learn of it... but in the end, Diva still gets an AlasPoorVillain moment and gets sympathetically treated as a tragic villain who just wanted a family, even though said family was born of the father's rape and murder. If Amshel had done it, Saya likely would not have cried for him like she cried for Diva.]]. Notably, the manga, as part of its attempt to make Diva more legitimately sympathetic, removes this act entirely.
* TheDreaded: Is this to the Red Shield to the extent that, when he meets her face-to-face, Lewis is so thoroughly intimidated by her that he falls back on his ass in fear, and is ''extremely'' relieved when she chooses to pursue Saya over eating him.
* EvilCounterpart: Diva is what Saya could've been like if she had been the one locked in the tower instead of raised like a human, driven home by how she acts and dresses similarly to how Saya did at the Zoo. [[spoiler:When Saya holds Diva's hand in the anime after Diva's death, the original Japanese dialogue even has Saya call her "my other half."]]
* EvilDiva: Her voice can turn any human who's ingested Delta 67, a chemical created from her blood, into a Chiropteran. Downplayed, since her voice just activates the chemical. In the manga, it does have the innate power to trigger Saya's berserker state.
* EvilIsHammy: In the English dub, anyway.
* EvilLaugh: Often giggles as though she's a young girl.
* EvilTwin: To Saya, given she was born the same time she was. Unlike Saya, Diva has no qualms committing terrorism.
* FaceStealer: Spends much of Seasons 3 and 4 [[spoiler:appearing as a paler, black-haired, blue-eyed version of Riku]].
* FairytaleMotifs: Diva's whole character seems built off a dark take on fairytales. She is beautiful, has an enchanting singing voice, and is associated with the impossible blue roses that grow around her like magic. When she was younger, she was a lonely princess [[Literature/{{Rapunzel}} locked away at the top of a tower]] and waiting to be freed. Now she is a queen, protected and served by her loyal knights (''chevalier'' is [[BilingualBonus French for "knight"]]).
* FanDisservice: She gets a ToplessnessFromTheBack shot right before [[spoiler:raping and killing Riku.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: Drinks human blood, kills people by the truckload, and [[spoiler: rapes and murders a 12-year-old child to impregnate herself]], all while singing, prancing around in fancy clothes, and giggling childishly.
* FlowerMotifs: Blue roses. They're everywhere around her and her chevalier.
* FreudianExcuse: Saya's first "father" locked her up in a bare stone cell at the top of a tower while he raised her sister Saya like his own daughter as part of a social experiment on the mysterious human-looking twin creatures he'd discovered. Diva spent the first 50 years of her life in near-total isolation with only her jailers for occasional company, and seems sad and jealous of Saya in their final clash when saying Saya was the only one treated like a human and allowed to enjoy life. It's no surprise she turned out [[LackOfEmpathy the]] [[KillAllHumans way]] [[PsychopathicManchild she]] [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds did]].
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Diva may have had a crappy life for the first fifty years of it, but Saya and the Red Shield agree that it doesn't justify burning down the Zoo, slaughtering the original Joel Goldschmidt, and all of the other atrocities she's committed, ''especially'' [[spoiler:her [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rape and murder of Riku]]]], and insist she's an evil monster who needs to be stopped.
* GigglingVillain: Has an [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRO2K5xu18A annoying childish giggle, and enjoys giggling]].
* TheGloriousWarOfSisterlyRivalry: With Saya, as the "pretty" sister. Of the two, Diva is twistedly childish (rather than ditzy), more stereotypically girly with her interest in clothes, shoes, and boys, and has [[LongHairIsFeminine long feminine hair]].
* GoOutWithASmile:
** [[spoiler:In the anime, the last thing Diva does before she dies is smile at the cocoons of her babies and caress them until her hand crystallizes, with her fantasizing about how she would have cuddled and played with them once they'd hatched.]]
** [[spoiler:In the manga, she stops Saya from committing suicide, and with a smile, tells Saya to live before fully crystallizing and crumbling away.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Her antagonism towards Saya is due to this. She is envious at the fact that Saya lives an idyllic and normal life while she was treated as a test subject and being locked up in a tower.
* TheHeavy: [[spoiler:Amshel]] is the one with the EvilPlan but Diva is the most powerful antagonist in the series, with stopping the untold destruction she directly causes being the reason for Red Shield to fight. Being that she is Saya's younger twin sister who [[spoiler:horrifically murders Saya's adopted little brother]] also makes her the most personal enemy for the protagonist.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:Raping Riku got her pregnant like she wanted, but the pregnancy sapped the poison out of her blood, thus disabling the only thing that could kill Saya. When the sisters finally got their fight, Diva had absolutely nothing to kill Saya with and, after what Diva did to Riku (not to mention other people), Saya has every reason in the world to want her dead. It was only a matter of time before Saya succeeded in killing Diva.]]
* IcyBlueEyes: Hers are too dark a shade of blue by default to qualify for this trope, but once they start [[GlowingEyesOfDoom glowing]], they shine an [[OccultBlueEyes unnaturally]] pale, bright blue that just screams out that Diva is a cold-blooded killer.
* IdenticalTwinIdTag: She has paler skin and longer, girlier hair than Saya does, and her eyes are blue and glow an eerie bright blue as opposed to Saya's amber eyes that glow red.
* ImmortalImmaturity: She's nearly two hundred years old, but acts like a PsychopathicManchild.
* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty: Like Saya, she stopped aging at sixteen.
* ImplacableMan: Female version in episode 32. She's bent on [[spoiler:finding and raping Riku]]. And she's '''not''' going to let anyone get in her way to achieve this goal.
* LackOfEmpathy: Both versions of Diva have different takes on this trope. The manga incarnation [[ObliviouslyEvil doesn't understand that what she's doing is wrong]], while the anime incarnation is fully aware that she's inflicting harm on others and evil enough to not care and enjoy it; she gets a kick out of emotionally tormenting Saya and [[spoiler:when she rapes Riku, she actually ''smiles'' at how terrified he is and calls him her "thing"]].
* LargeHam: Especially in the English dub.
* LightDarknessJuxtaposition: She has this dynamic with Saya, with Diva being LightIsNotGood and Saya being DarkIsNotEvil. Saya is TheHero who favors dark colors like maroon and black and has dark red eyes, whereas Diva is the BigBad who prefers lighter clothing and has bright blue eyes.
* LightIsNotGood: Diva's eyes are bright blue and she favors light clothing but she's also the most dangerous Chiropteran in the show.
* LightningBruiser: She's able to effortlessly throw Saya through a brick wall, FlashStep with ease, and take bullets to the chest while barely even flinching.
* MadwomanInTheAttic: Cute Psycho in the Tower in this case.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: In episode 24, she gets shot in the chest by David, and while it stuns her and sends her bending backwards like a ragdoll, she pops back up in a few seconds just to whine about the bullet hole in her dress. Of course, given her HealingFactor, it's probably not really a ''major'' injury to her.
* MeaningfulName: Because she, you know, [[DontExplainTheJoke she sings really well.]] The scientists who experimented on her didn't give her any name, but Saya named her when they were children after hearing her singing.
* AMillionIsAStatistic: Quite a few people lost sympathy for Diva after she [[spoiler:raped and killed Riku]]. Sure, never mind that she's filled entire graveyards over the past century. Even then, she won back some favor because of her love for [[spoiler:her unborn babies]]... even though the way she expressed her [[spoiler:motherly love]] was by planning to ''wipe the human race off the face of the Earth for them''.
* MirrorCharacter: She feels that she and Saya are the same, being not only chiropterans but also twin sisters. The similarities run even deeper than either of them realize: they both want to have a family, they both want to have a happy life, and they are determined to wipe out an entire race in order to preserve their own. At first, Saya vehemently argues against the idea that she is anything like Diva, but [[spoiler:after killing Diva]] she rather solemnly acknowledges Diva as her "other half" in the original Japanese-language version of the anime.
* MotiveRant: Gives one to Saya right before they fight at the opera house, in the hopes that her sister would agree and they wouldn't have to kill each other.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: She is the exact same size and weight as Saya, but is shown to be powerful enough to punch David across a room and then toss Saya clean through a ''brick wall'' without even trying. As the other Chiropteran Queen, and a well fed one to boot, this is justified.
* NeverGivenAName: Diva was raised [[SeparatedAtBirth differently from her twin Saya]] as an experiment. While Saya was given a loving home and the best care possible, Diva was locked in a tower and not given so much as a name. When Saya meets her, she gives her the name Diva.
* ObliviouslyEvil: [[AdaptationalNiceGuy In the manga]]. Diva honestly doesn't seem to understand the difference between right and wrong, or why Saya would hate her for such acts as [[spoiler:mortally wounding Haji or draining Riku]].
* OccultBlueEyes: One of the most definitive examples in anime of the trope, Diva possesses a positively spellbinding pair of sky blue irises that are damned scary to look at because they don't reflect light and exude KillingIntent. She is eerily calm and tranquil, yet bloodthirsty all in the same breath, and those eyes betray her disposition. And when when they glow an even harsher shade of blue, it means that ''hell is on the way.''
%%* TheOphelia
* PimpedOutDress: Diva loves to dress up in beautiful dresses, the weirder, the better. Of particular note are the dress... thing she wears in episode 32 that is just a frilly white cape clasped at the throat, with evening gloves and sneakers, and the black-and-blue gown she wears to her fight with Saya at the Metropolitan Opera House. Going by the latter outfit's tiara and bat-like wings, it's supposed to show Diva's status as the queen of the chiropterans, but it just looks... odd. The "weird" aspect to her dresses make sense if [[PsychopathicWomanchild Diva]] dresses herself.
* PowerDegeneration: [[spoiler:Nathan explains that as a result of Diva's pregnancy, her blood lost its toxic property. She never realized this, since there was so little information on her species and none at all on what happened when queens became pregnant. When Diva faced off against Saya in their final duel, she effectively went into a gunfight with an unloaded gun.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: She takes Type B to a depraved extreme. For example, in episode 24, she bites young Riku and drinks his blood, then childishly laughs and jumps around in a white and blue PimpedOutDress when caught by the heroes, before she captures Saya herself and almost kills her. [[spoiler:Later, she will rape and kill Riku to impregnate herself.]]
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: Her [[spoiler: rape and murder of Riku]] is depicted as an in-universe MoralEventHorizon crossing.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Black-haired, white-skinned Diva is described as "the most beautiful and dangerous woman" by one character. The crowning example of the series.
* RedOniBlueOni: Childish Diva is the Red Oni to withdrawn Saya's Blue Oni. She's spoiled by her chevaliers and has a more playful lilt to her voice. It's played straight when the twins get angry. Saya is more prone to hot aggression and her berserk mode can be triggered while Diva becomes cold and quiet. An example of this is when she's [[spoiler: protecting her cocooned babies from Solomon- no yelling, just promptly giving Solomon a one-sided beatdown.]] Under her childishness, she's also more attuned and calculating with the people around her. Before [[spoiler: Diva and Karl head to Red Shield's HQ, the former tosses a doll with Karl catching it. The latter asks how she is and replies that she's bored. Karl suggests that he'd buy another doll for her. Diva is briefly surprised that her chevalier is willing to buy another one just to please her. She laughs, and takes advantage of his love-hungry demeanor by requesting to be flown to Red Shield, knowing that Amshel and the others would refuse compared to him. She also has her introspective moments, like asking Saya why only she gets to be happy while genuinely wanting to understand why humans should be left alive even though only Saya gets to experience true compassion from them.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: The very first thing that Diva does when Saya releases her from the tower is butcher Joel I and the patrons at his birthday party in retribution for all of the pain and suffering Joel put her through.
* {{Sadist}}: She gets a kick out of emotionally torturing Saya and relishes the thought of killing her. On top of that, [[spoiler:prior to her rape of Riku, she ''smiles'' at the look of terror on his face]].
* SexGoddess: VampiresAreSexGods already applies to Chiropterans Queens, but her [[KissOfTheVampire bite]] is shown to be particularly pleasurable, with the ReallySevenHundredYearsOld Nathan [[TheModestOrgasm slumping down into the floor]] in an orgasmic daze after receiving one from her. In the light novel adaptation, it's explained that something in Diva's eyes causes the Chevalier blood to react with a "[[LivingAphrodisiac maddening desire]]" which is played for FanDisservice since [[spoiler: she uses it to rape Riku, making him incapable of physically resisting her and explains how she managed to get him to... ''perform'', so she could become pregnant]].
* ShadowArchetype: She essentially represents what Saya could have become had Saya been the one confined to a tower. Saya is fully aware that she and Diva's positions could been reversed, and in the Japanese dialogue for the anime, acknowledges Diva as her other half.
* StalkerWithATestTube: [[spoiler:Queens can only get pregnant from having sex with one of their sister's chevaliers. Diva isn't much interested in Hagi, but does become interested in Riku after she's drank his blood and Saya turns him to save his life. It turns into sheer horror as she mercilessly hunts the poor kid down and rapes him to impregnate herself.]]
* StockholmSyndrome: In the manga, Diva latches onto Amshel, her jailer at the Zoo, as a ParentalSubstitute because he acts as though he cares about her, and it continues into the present. Feeling lonely because she's not allowed to see Saya (because Saya's trying to kill her) and Amshel is too busy for her nowadays, Diva wishes she was still in the tower despite how horrible the conditions were, simply because back then Saya and Amshel visited her everyday.
* SuperStrength: In episode 24, she flings Saya clean through a brick wall with such force that when Saya hit the ground, the ground actually collapsed under the impact.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Blue is her main color and is the more conventionally feminine twin with skipping in gardens wearing mostly dresses and having long hair.
* UndeadBarefooter: When she isn't obsessing over shoes creepily, Diva tends to loaf about in bare feet, exemplifying her vampiric motif and her deranged personality. She also goes barefoot in her final battle with Saya, discarding her unsuitable dress heels which hinder her movements.
* UnskilledButStrong: To contrast Saya's WeakButSkilled. Diva is nowhere near as skilled as Saya with a sword, but her raw strength and speed more than makes up for it.
* TheVamp: In the anime. She certainly looks the part with her RavenHairIvorySkin, and it fits with her being a chiropteran queen (chiropterans being ''Blood+'s'' take on [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampires]], traditionally metaphors for sex and seduction). She gets sexual with her chevaliers at times (who, by their nature as her chevaliers, are basically in love with her by instinct) and later tries to seduce Kai into pulling a FaceHeelTurn and becoming her chevalier. However, the trope ends up horribly subverted. Diva treats her [[spoiler:rape on Riku]] as though it were a seduction, but he is visibly terrified. And the aforementioned attempted seduction of Kai? Diva is [[spoiler:wearing his dead little brother's face and using his voice to do it]].
* VoiceChangeling: [[spoiler:After gaining Riku's appearance, she tries to get Kai to work with her. He quickly slams her offer down.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Trying to find out anything about her prior to watching Episode 24 is a perfect way to spoil the first half of this series.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Yes, she's a blood-crazed PsychopathicManchild, but the first fifty years of her life absolutely ''sucked''. At birth, Diva was separated from her sister Saya and locked up in a lonely cage at the top of a tower for decades, with her only human contact being men who saw her as nothing more than an experiment or an animal. She only ever wanted a family, but Saya, the only family she does have [[spoiler:prior to her daughters]], turned against her forever after Diva took revenge for how their adoptive father, the first Joel Goldschmidt, callously neglected Diva at the same time he raised Saya in freedom and luxury. She even gives Saya a MotiveRant prior to their final showdown, bitterly remarking that Saya was allowed to be happy and have fun while she wasn't. Trying to turn all humans into chiropterans to create a safe world for her [[spoiler:and her daughters free of the humans who showed her only cruelty, Diva dies tragically in Saya's arms before she can even see her daughters be born]].
* WouldHurtAChild: Not only would she hurt a child, she'd take pleasure in doing it. Just ask [[spoiler:twelve-year-old Riku]]. Whom she killed. And then [[spoiler:raped... And then killed ''again'']].
* {{Yandere}}: A platonic variation towards Saya in the manga. She wholeheartedly loves her sister and her greatest wish is to reunite and live with her, but of course being [[AxCrazy Diva]], she's also a ClingyJealousGirl who is NotGoodWithRejection.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Diva's Chevaliers]]
* AdaptationalWimp: In the anime, they are able to [[OneWingedAngel transform into Chiropterans]] to fight at their 100%, and each one of them have an special ability who makes them deadlier in a battle. In the manga, however, the most they can transform are their arms (with no implications they can go OneWingedAngel either), and, apart of Solomon's sword, they don't posses special powers. [[spoiler: Also, James and Nathan have a much small role, with the first being killed in his very official debut.]]
* BatOutOfHell: The normal chiropterans already look like monstrous, giant bats, but Diva's Chevaliers take the trope up a notch when they go in their OneWingedAngel forms. Amshel looks like a gigantic, purple bat with a bulged stomach able to use a BreathWeapon; Karl has a reptile-like head, sporting huge claws and sharp teeth; James is an armored chiropteran whose expressions always makes him look angry, and Nathan's looks like a mix between a bat and a praying mantis, being quite tall himself. Solomon is a subdued version, since he becomes a beige colored chiropteran with long hair, but doesn't has the menacing and/or monstrous features of his brothers.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: They all dress well and are seen in upper-class establishments. Fitting, as they pose as members of a lucrative business.
* OneWingedAngel: Each can take on a monstrous combat form, which they use when they want to get serious in combat.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: With the exception of James (who was turned into a Chevalier during UsefulNotes/WorldWarII, thing who would make him 70/80 years old at the time the series started), every one of them are older than 100. Amshel became one in the 18th century, Solomon and Karl approximately during UsefulNotes/WorldWarI, [[spoiler: and there's Nathan, who is implied to be even older than Amshel.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Their eyes glow red when they pull out the guns.
%%* TheRenfield
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Diva, by instinct. [[spoiler:Though it is possible for them to overcome this.]]

Amshel Goldsmith was the assistant of the original Joel Goldschmidt. He was Diva's first chevalier.
----
* AbusiveParents: He was Diva's main parental figure for the first fifty years of her life, keeping her locked in the tower and using her as a test subject while never giving her a proper name. Under his "parenting," it's easy to see how and why Diva turned out to be such a monster.
* TheAce: Diva's most powerful Chevalier, who [[CurbStompBattle easily defeats]] Saya and Haji in their first encounter without a scratch and rips off [[spoiler: Solomon's arm when he announced his desertion]] in a battle that Amshel ends intact.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Everything he does is because of his desire to find out everything he possibly can about chiropterans, and if that means overstepping all kinds of moral bounds and nearly causing TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt, it's a small price to pay.
* {{Authority Equals Asskicking}}. Diva's first chevalier and the true powerhouse of the team.
* {{Badass in a Nice Suit}}: Certainly looks the part of a badass corporate executive.
* BadBoss: It's not too apparent on the surface, but later episodes show how awful his treatment is towards his allies, especially Diva and Karl, being responsible for why they're as insane as they are.
* BeardOfEvil: Amshel is one of three major characters with a beard and the only villainous one. His is styled as a thin goatee, kept neatly filed, which is befitting of his status as a CorruptCorporateExecutive.
* TheChessmaster: He knows how to play Diva like a fiddle, using her love of destruction to his own advantage and convincing her to sing on stage so he can [[spoiler:use her voice to turn people into chiropterans]].
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Amshel takes on the appearance of a businessman so he can secure funding for researching chiropterans and maintain his own power.
* CreepyCrossdresser: First appears disguised as an old woman, then kills a Red Shield operative and spends the next few episodes disguised as her. And in the last few episodes, he arrives for the final battle [[spoiler:disguised as Diva]] to buy time against Saya.
* CurbStompBattle: His first battle with Saya in the present day. It ends with Amshel crushing Saya's arm and breaking her sword.
* DragonInChief: He is Diva's first Chevalier and runs Cinq Fleches' business operations while [[PsychopathicWomanchild Diva]] is content to cause mindless destruction. He also plans to use Diva for his own ambitions by taking advantage of her CompellingVoice, while she just likes getting the chance to sing on stage. Amshel also [[spoiler:survives Diva's death and becomes the [[FinalBoss final antagonist to be defeated]]]].
* EvilGenius: Amshel runs the business used to fund all of Diva's activities and is a capable scientist, with tons of research on chiropterans.
* EvilutionaryBiologist: Is responsible for the creation of chiropterans and the Schiff.
* FaceStealer: He's introduced after having killed a Red Shield agent and using her form to disguise himself before attacking Saya.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He portrays himself as a polite man. It's far and away from the truth as he does horrible things for the sake of it.
* ForScience: Using innocent children as guinea pigs for genetic manipulation? Turning the populace of New York into monsters? All necessary steps for him to find out everything he can about the chiropteran race.
* {{Greed}}: He wants to possess ''everything'' - money, power, Diva, [[spoiler: Diva's children, and control of the whole world.]]
* HarmlessElectrocution: [[spoiler:Averted. After being impaled on the Chrysler Building's spire, Amshel is fried by a lightning bolt attracted by the spire's point. He survives (barely) but his healing factor has him stuck between his human and chiropteran forms when he returns to finish his fight with Haji.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:He has this done to him by Haji during the climactic battle with Diva.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: At the end of the day, Amshel is an entitled, selfish monster who merely uses people as he sees fit, be it allies or enemies.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:After callously manipulating and hurting innocent lives, Haji takes him out and no one is crying.]]
* MadScientist: He wants to know everything there is to know about chiropterans and will do anything to learn. ''[[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Anything]]''. In fact, he's single-handedly responsible for how fucked up Diva and Karl are.
* TheManInFrontOfTheMan: While masquerading as TheDragon to Diva, the way she talks to Amshel makes it clear she looks up to him and his corporation means he's responsible for her and her Chevaliers' income and while she just wants to sing and cause chaos, it is Amshel who is the real mastermind, using her desires to fuel his own experiments. Flashbacks also reveal he helped shape Diva into who she is today after the first Joel mistreated her. [[spoiler:He also steps up as the final obstacle once Diva has been killed]].
* RasputinianDeath: [[spoiler: Haji had a time and half making him truly dead.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler: When Haji uses Saya's sword to kill him for good just before the MET is bombed, right before he completely crystallizes, he impales Haji with his claws and traps him, rendering him unable to escape the bombings. However, the last shot of the series implies Hagi still found a way to survive.]]
* TheUnfettered: He'll do whatever it takes to find out everything he can about chiropterans, committing such atrocities as performing genetic experiments on children and trying to turn everyone in UsefulNotes/NewYorkCity into chiropterans themselves.
* WouldHurtAChild: So long as it involves pressing further for chiropteran research, he'll hurt children.

[[folder:Solomon Goldsmith]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KoujiTsujitani (JP), Creator/DaveWittenberg (EN), Enrique Hernández (SP), Creator/VictorUgarte (Latin-American SP)
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/solomon_9.jpg]]

Solomon Goldsmith was Diva's fourth chevalier.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the anime, Solomon is AffablyEvil and falls in love with Saya, [[spoiler:pulling a HeelFaceTurn to aid her against Diva and his brothers]]. In the manga adaptation, his niceness is only a pretty mask for his ugly true personality, being similar to Amshel as a cold-blooded, selfish villain who cares more about research on chiropterans than either of the queens. Instead of Diva choosing to [[spoiler:hunt down and rape Riku to impregnate herself]] of her own volition as she did in the anime, she gets a [[AdaptationalHeroism more sympathetic depiction]] and that despicable choice is shifted to Solomon who tries to [[spoiler:force a resisting Riku and disinterested Diva to mate]], and when that "experiment" is stopped by Diva (much to Solomon's anger), he pretends to join Saya's side in hopes of [[spoiler:mating with her]] to just complete his "experiment."
* AffablyEvil: Despite being a supporter of Amshel and Diva, Solomon is very polite and handles himself with a gentlemanly demeanour in front of people. He even states that he doesn't like seeing people kill each other.
* AntiVillain: Solomon felt driven to become a Chevalier because he wanted to [[TragicVillain escape the turmoil of fighting]] he saw between humans during World War II, and even now tends to be the most scrupulous of Diva's chevaliers (though he'll ultimately just nod and follow Amshel's orders). When he [[spoiler:falls in love with Saya he even goes so far as to betray Diva for her]].
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In the manga, where he keeps the anime Solomon's mild and pleasant demeanor but it's far more hollow BeneathTheMask even though he acts more chipper than in the anime, disguising his single-minded interest in performing experiments on chiropterans, a nasty temper, and a slimy, [[ManipulativeBastard manipulative]], scheming personality. Riku doesn't pick up on it and genuinely thinks Solomon is a nice guy while the latter manipulates him. This is averted in the anime.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: His weapon of choice. He shapeshifts his hand into one.
* ChickMagnet: Owning handsome attributes like a kind, gentle smile, he is shown to be the eye-catcher of every woman in any gathering.
* DarkIsNotEvil: As one of Diva's chevaliers, he has [[RedEyesTakeWarning glowing red eyes]] like his brothers, but like Saya, he subverts the usual association with pure evil and is fairly moral for a villain. Also an example of LightIsNotGood for his coloring and clothes. [[spoiler:When he [[HeelFaceTurn changes to Saya's side]], he has a GoodCostumeSwitch and starts wearing all black instead to symbolize him becoming one of her chevaliers (her true chevaliers, Hagi and Riku, both wore primarily black after being turned).]]
* EvilVersusEvil: In the manga. [[spoiler:He still tries and fails to kill Amshel to get on Saya's good side, but this version of Solomon is no better than Amshel.]]
* GoodCostumeSwitch: He is mostly seen wearing all-white suits, since that's what he was wearing when he first met Diva. [[spoiler: That is, until he decides to follow Saya and betray Diva, starting to wear black suits since then.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:In the anime, he joins Saya as her chevalier by choice rather than blood and attempts to kill Diva and her other chevaliers for her. Note however that it's only out of love for Saya as opposed to a change in morality or views. In the manga, he claims to join her side and does try to kill Amshel, but it's even less genuine as he doesn't care about Saya herself in the slightest and is only trying to manipulate her for his own goals (or as a consolation prize, at least have Diva fall into his lap as an easier subject to manipulate without Amshel's interference).]]
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: Came to believe this after he was turned into a chiropteran, most likely also the reason he has no regard for human life.
* LightIsNotGood: A fair-skinned, blond-haired man with a kind smile and gentle disposition who's described to have the face of an angel, and wears white to symbolize his devotion to Diva, as he was wearing white the day they first met (and in a meta sense, because she favors white clothing too in another example of this trope). Despite what his appearance suggests, Solomon is a villain who willingly collaborates with his brothers in their EvilPlan and assists [[BigBad Diva]]. This trope is played straight in the manga, but in the anime he also counts as DarkIsNotEvil for his being less malicious than the rest of Diva's group.
%%* InLoveWithYourCarnage: [[spoiler: To Saya]] in the manga.
* InTheBlood: Not literally (in this series you do have to clarify), but Solomon was actually a member of Amshel's human family before the latter chose him to become a new chevalier for Diva. Exactly how they were related is never specified, but there's at least 33 years difference in when Amshel was turned (assuming he was turned in 1883; he does look suspiciously young and spry compared to the first Joel, who was killed by Diva in his 70's when they should've been around the same age) and Solomon being turned in 1917. They exclusively refer to each other as "brother" but since all of Diva's chevaliers are considered "brothers", that doesn't make the genetic relationship between Amshel and Solomon any clearer.
* MadScientist: The manga's Solomon is basically the second coming of Amshel in his single-minded obsession with experimenting with chiropterans.
* TheMedic: He used to be a military doctor before he turned into a chevalier.
* MoreThanMindControl: Inverted. [[spoiler:He falls in love with Saya, but while Amshel dismiss his feelings for her as merely his instincts as a chevalier to serve (and mate with) a queen compelling him, Solomon says that his love for her is as Solomon Goldsmith for Saya Otonashi, not a chevalier for a queen.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Compared to most of his brothers, Solomon is actually a pacifist.
* ParentalFavoritism: According to James, he was "Diva's favorite boy." She is noticeably clingy with him in their scenes together and though [[spoiler:she does disown him as her chevalier when she finds out he's chosen Saya over her, she doesn't go so far as to kill him outright even after he tries to kill her, and he is kept alive albeit imprisoned instead]].
* PrettyBoy: Solomon retains the appearance of a handsome, slender youth and his good looks are noticed by many female partygoers in one scene.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:After he decides to become Saya's chevalier in the anime, he helps her kill Karl and James and also tries to kill both Diva and Amshel for her sake. Getting accidentally poisoned by Saya's blood in defending her from James, he comes up short in his attempt to kill Amshel and dies loyal to her cause.]]
* SecretStabWound: [[spoiler:He helps Saya kill James, tells her to call on him if she needs him, and then walks off. It's only once he's out of the heroes' eyeshot that it's revealed to the audience that he's crystallizing from accidentally getting cut by Saya's blood-laced katana in battle; changing sides didn't change the fact that it's Diva's blood that runs through his veins and that Saya's blood is still fatally poisonous to him, and he dies within moments.]]
* ShapeshifterWeapon: Has a knife arm whenever he gets into combat.
%%* SixthRangerTraitor
* StalkerWithACrush: To Saya. [[spoiler:So much he defects from Cinq Fletches to be with her. But since he still has Diva's blood, any attack from Saya will still kill him.]]
* StalkerWithATestTube: He got this trait instead of [[AdaptationalHeroism Diva]] in the manga, where he is obsessed with seeing what would happen if a chiropteran queen and her sister's chevalier mated. His interest in Saya in this version is only because his attempts to have Diva mate with Saya's chevaliers failed miserably so he starts pursuing Saya to conduct the experiment himself. [[spoiler:He's not any luckier in this regard than his anime counterpart.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:Solomon attempts this on Amshel in a last charge when the latter appears to him as Solomon is dying. It fails with Amshel watching on without a scratch as Solomon succumbs to crystallization]].
* TokenGoodTeammate: The only one of the Chevaliers with a moral sense, given he became one to end war for good. He also has genuine fondness for Saya and is the only one who cares for Karl. [[spoiler:He is the only one who defects and is the gutted about Karl's death.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Towards Diva in the anime as part of the chevalier instinct. [[spoiler: He later feels this way towards Saya, to the point where he betrays Diva and tries to kill her to fulfill Saya's wishes (though he still admits he cares about Diva)]].
* WarIsHell: His experiences during World War I was one of his main reasons to become a chevalier, so he could be free from seeing humans kill each other, only to discover that chiropterans are just as bad.
* WorstAid: After Saya pulls off a DeliberateInjuryGambit to kill [[spoiler: Karl]], Solomon stops her from pulling her katana out of her stomach, warning her that she could potentially damage her internal organs if she forces the blade out before quickly and cleanly yanking the sword out of Saya's body himself. [[GoodThingYouCanHeal If not]] for Saya's HealingFactor, she would have bled out right then and there.

[[folder:Karl Fei-Ong]]
->Voiced by: Creator/NozomuSasaki (JP), Creator/QuintonFlynn (EN), Carlos Lladó (SP), Edson Matus (Latin-American SP)
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karl01_9433.png]]

Karl Fei-Ong is one of Diva's wealthy chevaliers and her lover and a member of Cinq Flèches. He is the chairman of Lycee de Cinq Flèches, a renowned girls' high-school in Vietnam. [[spoiler:He also has a second personality which is known as the Phantom.]]
----
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler: In his final battle with Saya, Solomon appears and cuts his arm, leaving an opportunity to Saya to kill him by stabbing Karl through herself, crystallizing the Chevalier. Before dying, Karl asks Solomon why with the most betrayed tone possible. To make matters worse, Solomon is the only one of his brothers to understand his pain and miss him]].
* AnArmAndALeg: He loses both an arm and a leg to Saya at different points.
* AxCrazy: When he is in his Phantom persona, he becomes mad and loses his sanity completely, apart of becoming extremely creepy while talking with someone (especially Saya). He's not exactly sane in his normal facet, mind you, just that he knows to mask his sanity better in his public persona.
* BreakTheCutie: Years of experiments and blatant disregard has understandably made him go mad. [[spoiler:His death seems more like a MercyKill at any rate.]]
* TheBrute: He tends to rely on brute force most of the times and due his insanity, he is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Diva herself takes advantage of this to bring him [[spoiler: to her attack on the Red Shield HQ.]]
* {{Camp}}: His flamboyant personality combined with his choices of attire.
* [[ClingyJealousGirl Clingy Jealous Guy]]: Towards Diva. When Diva's chevaliers gather around her container following her awakening they are annoyed to realize that their access codes don't work anymore because Karl secretly changed them and gave himself the only valid code. Out of all of Diva's chevaliers, Karl is the one who is most obviously trying to win her favor and feel closer to her. As a result, he tends to indulge her beyond a reasonable point... [[spoiler: and this results in him secretly taking her to the Red Shield HQ.]]
* DeathSeeker: Because of Diva's rejection, Karl felt very lonely. For that, when he saw Saya's rampage in Vietnam, he fell in love with her and desired to die with her because he believed that Saya and him were solitary persons. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for him, Saya didn't share the same belief.]]
* DudeLooksLikeALady: {{Zigzagged}}. He wears an ao dai, which isn't exclusively a woman's garment, but it's certainly most common, but other than his long hair he doesn't look too feminine.
* EvilIsHammy: [[spoiler: Especially after he reveals himself to be the Phantom, when he talks in a melodramatic, over the top way.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: As the Chairman of Lycee, he's calm, polite, and well-mannered, but we all know that BeneathTheMask is a murderous, raving lunatic.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: After seeing Saya's rampage in Vietnam (in which he lost one of his arms) he felt madly in love with this side of her, to the point of becoming totally obssessed with her. Also, it's implied he feels this way towards Diva too.
* LargeHam: [[spoiler:After he reveals himself to be the Phantom. He rarely goes quiet after that. At least until his death.]]
* LifeOrLimbDecision: He cut off his own arm ''and'' leg to avoid being [[TakenForGranite crystallized]] by Saya's blood.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy: To Saya. [[spoiler: And Diva, initially. The fact that she didn't love him is what drove him insane.]]
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Stylized to look like ''bat wings''.
* MaskOfSanity: In his public persona, he acts like the calm, mature, and polite Chairman of Lycee de Cinq Flèches. It's only when he takes up his Phantom persona that it becomes clear how AxCrazy Karl really is.
* OminousOperaCape: With HighCollarOfDoom. It shows that he's fairly dramatic.
* PlayingWithSyringes: Unlike his brothers, he was turned into a chevalier to be a test subject. He tells Saya that being a chevalier involved being vivisected repeatedly.
%%* RedRightHand
* SanitySlippage: Before becoming a Chevalier, he was a sane and normal young man. However, after Amshel's experiments on him, he turned mad and obsessed with Diva (and later with Saya).
* SerialKiller: To calm his obssession towards Saya, he frequently kidnapped, killed and sucked the blood of girls of Asian ascendency who looked similar to her.
* SlasherSmile: Everytime he enter in his Phantom persona, he sports one of these.
* StalkerWithACrush: To Saya, to unsuspected limits.
* TakingYouWithMe: In his and Saya's final fight, he has Saya at his mercy and attempts to completely drain her of blood, knowing this would kill him as well, so they could die together. Saya [[DeliberateInjuryGambit doesn't go for it.]]
* TragicVillain: Karl was made a chevalier against his will [[spoiler: because Amshel wanted one to experiment on]].
* TheUnfavorite: Turned into a Chevalier against his will, repeatedly tested, and eventually [[spoiler: tricked into running into his death with only Solomon mourning? Yep, he fits the bill.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: In his day job, he's the well-liked and respected Chairman of Le Lycee du Cinq Fleches, an all-girls Vietnamese high school.
* WakeUpCallBoss: The first real challenge Saya and Haji deal with.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: An extremely tragic villainous example. Being immortal and the butt of the Chevaliers has made him insane and he wants to die.

[[folder:James Ironside]]

[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/james01_9220.png]]

James Ironside was Diva's sixth and last Chevalier and used to be her favorite. He was in contact with the US military and also the leader of Corpse Corps.
----
* AdaptationalWimp: In the anime, [[spoiler: to defeat him, it took the combined efforts of Haji, Kai, David, Lewis, the Schiffs, Saya, and Solomon, and he was killed because the Thorn appeared in him in the perfect time to give Saya the chance to finish him, apart that he was overall one of the toughest opponent the Red Shield had to face through the series. In the manga, however, he is easily killed in his debut by Saya (in her Berserker mode), just before he was able to show his abilities.]]
* AllThereInTheManual: His past is never revealed in the anime, but in the official webpage of the series it is revealed he grew out without a mother figure in his life, eventually participated in UsefulNotes/WorldWarII where he was fatally injured, and found by Diva who turned him into one of her Chevaliers. He came to consider Diva the mother he never had, and is from there whom his loyalty towards her comes.
%%* TheBrute:
* CommandingCoolness: As a high ranking Naval officer, he is responsible for Cinq Flèches military contracts [[spoiler: and later the leader of the Corpse Corps.]]
* DemotedToExtra: [[spoiler: In the manga, he is killed by Saya in seconds just after appearing for the first time along with the other Diva's Chevaliers in the attack of the Red Shield HQ. Compare this with his role in the anime, where he is a powerful opponent and the Arc Villain during the London arc.]]
* {{Determinator}}: In his battle with the Red Shield in Christina Island, he was too focused on defeating Saya that when [[TimeDelayedDeath his fate was already sealed]] from getting infected by her blood, he tries to take her with him to the hole with nuclear waste. [[spoiler: Too bad that he did not expect Solomon...]]
* HateSink: Not to the same extent as Amshel but is still a very ruthless and cruel SmugSnake who took pleasure in manipulating and hurting the Schiff and lacks the charm of [[AffablyEvil Solomon and Nathan]] or sympathetic features of [[AlasPoorVillain Karl]].
* {{Irony}}: After an encounter with Saya leaves him wounded and unable to regenerate, [[spoiler:he's forced to get Schiff implants]] to stay alive. This means Diva loses interest in him for the same reason he scorned the Schiff.
* InstantArmor: His skin in Chiropteran form is tough enough to render swords and gunfire ineffectual.
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler: Toward the Schiff. He even mocks Moses in front of Karman for agreeing to kill Kai for a cure for the Thorn]].
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler: Dies when he gets struck by the same disease as the Schiff he tried to slaughter]].
* MommasBoy: His love for his "mother" Diva is very much this. Nathan even teases him for it and takes James' locket, which James keeps a picture of Diva in and always carries with him, making it appear even his brothers see James this way. Unlike [[ILoveYouVampireSon the sexual undertones in most queen-chevalier relationships]], James never once shows desire for his "mother" ''or'' Saya, but instead is TheDutifulSon working tirelessly to try to make Diva happy and keep her safe despite knowing he's not her favorite (that's Solomon) and having to put up with working with his "brothers" he's clearly not too fond of ''(including'' [[SiblingRivalry Solomon]]). James' backstory mentioned above revealed he lost his mother when he was a child and it's implied that the loss is what got him to latch onto Diva as a mother figure so strongly in the first place, as well as [[FreudianExcuse why]] he's much more insistent than the others on eliminating all threats to Diva before they can harm her.
%%* MonsterKnight
* OneManArmy: He is one of the toughest opponents that the Red Shield have faced. It takes the efforts of Haji, Kai, David, Lewis, the Schiffs, Saya, [[spoiler: and Solomon]] to defeat him. [[spoiler: That still wasn't enough; if it weren't for the Thorn kicking in when it did, James would have killed them all]].
* SanitySlippage: After his battle with the Red Shield and the Schiffs on Christina Island, he is seriously wounded and Amshel replaces his missing parts with Schiff one, which makes Diva reject him. This affects him greatly and leaves him mad. [[spoiler: When he confronts Karman about his opinion about the Schiff, he sports an incredibly disturbing smile while torturing him]]. Comparing this with his previous impeccable self, one realizes how much Diva's rejection has affected him.
* ScaryBlackMan: Initially {{zigzagged}}. He looks normal in his human form, but gets incredibly intimidating in his chiropteran form, being a formidable enemy literaly MadeOfIron. [[spoiler: His human form totally fills the bill after his SanitySlippage, becoming even nastier and sporting disturbing grins while mocking his enemies.]]
%%* TheStrategist
* TragicBigot: His hatred of the Schiff, [[spoiler: especially after Diva rejects him for having most of his body replaced with their parts.]]
* TragicVillain: Perhaps the only one of Diva's chevaliers to be genuinely devoted to her, Diva [[spoiler:casts him off when he's grafted with Schiff body parts following his first defeat by Saya]].
* UndyingLoyalty: To Diva, for saving him when he was about to die. [[spoiler: He is so loyal to her, he goes insane when she rejects him after being implanted with Schiff's parts.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Following his rejection by Diva]].

[[folder:Nathan Mahler]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KeijiFujiwara (JP), Creator/WallyWingert (EN), Carlos Lladó (SP), Alan Prieto (Latin-American SP)
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nathan01_8925.png]]

The chiropteran known as Nathan Mahler serves as Diva's chevalier, although it is kept a mystery whose Chevalier he actually is.
----
* AdaptationalWimp: In the anime, Nathan is all but stated to [[spoiler:be the chevalier of the twins's mother and therefore much older than the rest of the chiropterans in the show, with more knowledge about what's going on than any other character]], to the point that he is even able to intimidate his "older brother" Amshel. There's no implication anywhere in the manga adaptation that its version of Nathan is anywhere as impressive, and [[spoiler:he is KilledOffForReal by Saya [[DeathByAdaptation in the manga]] whereas the anime's Nathan was revealed to be FakingTheDead in the end.]]
* AffablyEvil: Nathan is a Chevalier to Diva, and involves himself in nasty business, but he is polite, pleasant and very friendly most of the time, even towards the heroes.
* AgentPeacock: From his voice to his demeanor to his hobbies he's a textbook case of CampGay [[spoiler: but he's implied to be the most powerful of Diva's chevalier.]]
* AlasPoorVillain: Played straight on the giving end, as he takes a moment to [[spoiler:mourn Diva with Saya, lamenting that Diva could never be free of Amshel and only wanted a family]], but then subverted on the receiving end. Although the spoilered section set him up for his own tragic send-off, he appeared to be rather satisfied with how everything turned out, [[spoiler: and it's shown he survived.]]
%%* AntiVillain: [[SlidingScaleofAntiVillains Type IV]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite working for the villains, he's quite friendly. The few times he does threaten someone, it's ''freaking'' creepy.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Nathan couldn't care less about the ongoing conflict between humans and Chiropterans. His true motives aren't even mentioned until near the end and are cryptic even then.
* CampGay: He is unbelievably campy and flamboyant, while making no secret of his interest in men.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: His gay mannerism and silly personality make him look like an idiot, but [[spoiler: he is probably the strongest character of the series.]]
* TheChessmaster: While his endgoal is far from clear, what's obvious is that Nathan has people dancing on strings they don't even realize are connected to them.
* EnigmaticMinion: Whose side is Nathan on? He never quite answers it and much about him remains a mystery save for a few very cryptic hints. Even after he [[spoiler:coerces Amshel into agreeing to take Diva's babies but leave Diva to him (with the implication that his interest was in Diva alone, and as a ReplacementGoldfish for her mother), he simply watches from the sidelines as Diva turns a good number of humans into chiropterans and then Saya kills Diva, only revealing after Diva's death that he'd known that Diva's blood could no longer kill Saya due to her pregnancy. He then proceeds to let Saya think she killed him and takes his leave without making any move to harm her or collect Diva's babies, popping up again at Argiano's trial for unknown reasons.]]
* HiddenBadass: Insinuates that he's not only stronger than James and Amshel but [[spoiler: that he's the single most powerful being to appear in the show, period. If he truly was the Chevalier of Saya and Diva’s mother, then given how old he is, it would make sense that he’s the strongest character in the story.]]
* KissOfTheVampire: When Diva feeds on him, he goes on about how the sensation is "pure bliss."
%%* LargeHam
* LukeIMightBeYourFather: He may or may not be the Chevalier who impregnated Saya and Diva’s mother, in which case he’s their father. But it’s also possible that he was their mother’s Chevalier, in which case he could not be their father because a Chiropteran Queen cannot breed with one of her own Chevaliers. Whatever the case, he has been around for a long time and his motives are never fully understood by characters in the story or the audience.
* MercyKill: [[spoiler: After seeing that Diva has died and lamenting on her own foolishness, he reverts to his Chiropteran form and gently asks Saya to kill him, since he would essentially be living an empty life of immortality. Saya grants his last wish]]. Although [[spoiler: he's later seen to have survived the encounter and disguised himself as a reporter]].
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: [[spoiler:It's ''Nathan'' who kills Diva in the manga, by stabbing through Saya into her, the result of him increasingly growing to hate Diva for her almost killing him at the Red Shield HQ and blatantly not caring about James's death.]]
* MysteriousPast: In contrast to the others, Nathan's past isn't explored much.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Nathan is silly and flamboyant...but he will drop this in a heartbeat to deliver a harsh ultimatum to Amshel complete with a demonic voice when he feels slighted...and he's implied to be more than capable of backing the threats up.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Drops a hint that he was [[spoiler:the chevalier of Diva and Saya's ''mother'']].
* OnlySaneMan: He is the most calm of Diva's Chevaliers and the only one that never actively fights the Red Shield. Compared to Amshel, Karl or James, he is neither a fanatic or nor crazed.
* PunchClockVillain: Like Solomon, Nathan seems to be one of the least villainous of Diva's chevaliers, to the point that he never actually attacks the heroes and actually saves them several times. He only really qualifies as a villain because he's devoted to serving [[BigBad Diva]], and even then [[spoiler:he allows her to be put down by Saya after the former starts trying to wipe out humans entirely, calling into question what Nathan's true goals were]].
* TheUnfought: Nathan is the only Chevalier of Diva that never fights the Red Shield (except one time that he restrains Haji a bit). Not even in the ending of the series do we see him show his powers. The last opening of the series was rather infamous for spoiling his Chiropteran form and implying he will be a major opponent fighting alongside the rest of his associates.
* VillainousRescue: He saves Saya (and the Red Shield) several times in the anime by stopping fights between them and his brothers - though at one point he claims it's only because Saya deserves a better stage to die on.

Van Argiano is the head scientist studying chiropterans for Cinq Flèches.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: The reason why he works with Amshel in his experiments is because he wants to become a successful scientist.
* ArcVillain: During the Okinawa arc, where he is the one pulling the strings through the events of the arc. He is then demoted as a subordinate of Diva's Chevaliers after that.
* BigBadWannabe: At the start of the anime one would think that he's the one behind the chiropterans' appearance. Promotional posters and images also helped with this possibility. However, when Solomon and Karl appear in the Vietnam arc, one realizes that Van Argiano is not as big a threat as one would think before.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Turning innocents into monsters is not what you call a benevolent executive.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Wears glasses and is capable of terrible and immoral experiments on people to obtain his goals. Also he knows about Amshel's plan and doesn't do anything to stop him; in fact, he helps Amshel in its realization.
* FrenchJerk: He is from France and is a huge dick with his workers.
* FreudianExcuse: His background in the anime is not revealed, but in the official website it is revealed that he was the minor son in a French family who have seven children and that his older brothers bullied him.
* GeniusSweetTooth: He is always eating candies, no matter in which situation.
* KarmaHoudini: {{Subverted}}. [[spoiler: He survived the chiropteran attack in the Metropolitan Opera House thanks to David, but the last time we see him he is about to be judged in a court for his crimes.]] Played straight in the manga, where he escapes the law successfully.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Van says this during the final confrontation, when he sees people turning into Chiropterans.
* NumberTwo: Become this to Amshel, due to Solomon's continuous absence in his work.
* SmugSnake: He behaves mighty and confident when the situation is in his control, but loses his cool as soon as things go south for him.
* StarterVillain: He is the first member of Cinq Fleches to appear in the series and the one that causes the problems at the beginning of the series. In an unusual {{subversion}} of the trope, he survives past the first arc and sticks till the end of the series, but by that point Diva and her Chevaliers already took the spot as the main antagonists.
* TheUnfought: From the moment he sees the first chiropteran that Saya kills in 2006, he mistakes her for a samurai and says many times during season 1 that he wishes to meet "that samurai". Except in the climax of season 1, when he briefly sees Saya fighting with Karl, he never meets or talks with Saya at all.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler: He is this for Amshel. Argiano helps him in his experiments with the Delta 67, thinking that he eventually would be promoted to a better position in Cinq Fleches.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: He experiments on children as he sees fit.

!!The Schiff

A group of artificial chiropterans created by Amshel in a place called Khirbet with the purpose of create living weapons for the government of the United States. They are all sentient beings, and seeing that they would die enslaved if they stayed in the facility where they were created, they rebelled against their creators and escaped from Khirbet. Due to their defective bodies, they burn if they are exposed to the sun and develop a disease named "The Thorn" that appears gradually in their bodies and crystallizes them, resulting in their painful deaths. They interrogated a scientist on how to cure the Thorn and were told only Saya's blood can save them and so they attack her multiple times during the series.
----
[[folder:In General]]
* AdaptedOut: The manga adapts them out.
* AntiVillain: They are very violent and don't like humans very much, but they only kill to survive and not for pleasure. Also, while they try to kill Saya, it's also a matter of survival, nothing personal.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Spent most of their existence enslaved, created to be living weapons.
* DarkIsNotEvil: They start out as this, then gradually move to being characters of the light.
* ExoticWeaponSupremacy: Each Schiff has a unique weapon, some of which fall into this category--Moses' [[SinisterScythe colossal, folding scythe]] for example, or Ghee's strange katar-looking handblade.
* HeelFaceTurn: Slowly start doing this once they realize, rather tragically, [[spoiler:when Irène drinks some of Saya's blood and immediately and painfully dies,]] that Saya's blood is not in fact the key to curing them of their inevitable deaths.
* InTheHood: All of them wears black hood suits. {{Justified}}, as the contact with the sun burns them to the death if they expose much time to it.
* NoSocialSkills: Having been raised as living weapons, the concept of simply asking for something they want or for help rather than taking it by force is completely alien to them.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: With their vulnerability to sunlight, they are the closest the series gets to conventional vampires.
* PointyEars: As a way of saying they were never human.
* SecretProjectRefugeeFamily: They're experiments with no one else to call family but each other.
* SuperSoldiers: [[spoiler: They are the result of Amshel's experiment to manufacture Chevalier, and despite not quite measuring up to the strength of the real thing, they're fast and powerful in their own right and have a [[HealingFactor similar regenerative ability.]]]]
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler: They're shown to be strong, but get knocked around in later episodes. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] as they have little time left.]]
* TragicDream: They simply want to be free and cured of the Thorn. [[spoiler: The scientist they interrogated directed them towards a poison instead.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: They are absolutely committed to each other because they were born and raised together, escaped together and now seek a cure together.

[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moses01_6946.png]]

Moses, the leader of the Schiff, is the one who had encouraged them to leave the lab in Khilbet where they were created for the hope of freedom.
----
* BreakTheBadass: Goes through this over an episode or two once he realizes that [[spoiler: Karman is dying.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Finding out that Karman is about to die does not have any positive effect on Moses. Seriously.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:When he realizes that he cannot save Karman from the Thorn, they both find a beautiful place, exchange some poignant dialogue, and watch the sunset until the sunlight overwhelms them and turns them to ash.]]
* FriendshipMoment: With Karman [[spoiler: just before they commit suicide.]]
* HeroicBSOD: Again, [[spoiler: the knowledge of Karman's imminent death causes Moses to go through one of these.]]
* MartialPacifist: He fights for the sake of helping his friends gain a normal life.
* MeaningfulName: He inspired the Schiff to escape the research facility where they were created as test subjects.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Karman's red. He rarely gets emotional and does his battles accordingly.
* ShipTease: He certainly gets ''extremely'' emotional once he learns that [[spoiler:Karman is dying, especially when he understands the other plans to kill himself rather than slowly let the Thorn take him. Then he wants Karman to live so badly he actually tries to kill Kai, and probably would have succeeded if it weren't for Karman himself interfering in the nick of time. And the fact that he'd rather kill himself along with Karman rather than live for a little longer with Lulu speaks for itself]].
* SinisterScythe: Moses uses a scythe as his weapon.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Karman.

Karman is one of the schiffs hunting down Saya in order to survive.
----
* BreakTheBadass: [[spoiler: Has this done to him by James Ironside, and boy does it hurt.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:When he contracts the Thorn, he plans to do this, but Moses manages to stop him--though only for a short while. As soon as Karman makes Moses realize he can't be saved, they both find a beautiful place, exchange some poignant dialogue, and watch the sunset until the sunlight overwhelms them and turns them to ash.]]
* FriendshipMoment: With Moses [[spoiler: just before they commit suicide.]]
* TheGlassesComeOff: Averted. Karman has his glasses on in every fight he participates in.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite acting like a jerkass towards most of the people he meets, he seems to genuinely care about [[MoralityPet his fellow Schiff]].
* RedOni, BlueOni: The red to Moses's blue.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Moses.

[[folder:Lulu]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ChiwaSaito (JP), Lara Jill Miller (EN), Mar Nicolás (SP), Ana Lucía Ramos (Latin-American SP)
[[quoteright:280:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_32480.jpg]]

Lulu is the youngest Schiff member.
----
* AscendedExtra: She got no lines (other than grunts) during her first appearences, and her role was as secondary as most of the Schiffs not named Moses, Karman or Irene. She starts having dialogues and more screentime starting from the Paris arc, and eventually [[spoiler: replaces Irene as the main female Schiff after her death.]]
* BadassAdorable: She's small, cute and cheerful, while also being able to kill chiropterans easily and hold her own against Chevaliers.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: After enduring all of the struggles and losses she and her band of fellow Schiff went through, she ends up being the LastOfHerKind. On the bright side, she's finally got to see Okinawa and receives medical treatment from Julia to ward off the Thorn.]]
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler: Despite losing all her Schiffs friends, at the end of the series Julia finds a way to extend her life and she is able to go to Okinawa, with new friends that care for her.]]
* GenkiGirl: Very energetic and cheerful, especially comparing to her fellows Schiff, who are embittered, cynic or sad.
* LastOfHerKind: [[spoiler: She is the only one of the Schiff that survives to the end of the series.]]
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: To [[spoiler: Moses and Karman. She's understandably upset when she realizes this.]]

Irène is one of the Schiff, created from Diva's blood.
----
* {{BFS}}: Her weapon is a very big sword.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler: Unlike the other Schiffs, who either were killed or committed suicide, she dies from the Thorn when she drinks Saya's blood, suffering a painful death.]]
* DirtyBusiness: Irene admits to both Ghee and [[spoiler: Kai]] that she does not want to kill anyone anymore, despite having little choice in the matter.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Blonde and the nicest of the Schiffs. She also didn't try to harm humans (even in self defense and when she is hungry) and was very grateful to [[spoiler: Kai when he saves her of a thugs in Paris.]]
* HyperAwareness: Irene is the only one of the Schiff who possesses this ability, being able to sense any target within a fairly wide distance of herself.
* MeaningfulName: Her name comes from the greek word "Ειρἠνη" (Eirene) who means "peace". She is also the most peaceful of the Schiffs.
* MrExposition: [[spoiler: When Kai saves her and ask her about the Schiffs's origins, she tells him all their story of their creation, about the Thorn and why they pursue Saya.]]
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: [[spoiler: Is a genuinely NiceGirl who just wants to be cured of the thorne and spend time with her new friend Kai, instead dies a truly painful death in the middle of a HopeSpot. Both her death and Riku's death a couple of episodes later result in the show taking an even darker turn]]

Saya's best friend in Okinawa.
----
* BackForTheFinale: She returns for the final episode, after having been absent for most of the show.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: The poor girl has no idea what's going on with Saya.
* NiceGirl: From is seen of her she seems to be this.
* SocialCircleFiller: Exists to show that Saya has a friend in the first few episodes. She then vanishes from the story once the plot kicks off. However she at least gets some closure in episode 14, when Saya briefly returns to Okinawa.

[[folder:Kanade and Hibiki ('''UNMARKED BLOOD+ SPOILERS''')]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/divas_children.jpg]]

Diva's twin daughters, conceived when she raped Riku. They're born in the second-to-last episode of the series. As revealed in the light novels, their names are Kanade and Hibiki Otonashi.
----
* AdaptedOut: They don't exist in the manga, since [[AdaptationalHeroism Diva]] never rapes Riku.
* AscendedExtra: They're the protagonists of the sequel light novel ''Blood#''.
* CallingParentsByTheirName: They address Kai by name, even though he repeatedly attempts to get them to call him "Dad." To be fair, they are aware he is their blood uncle and it's clear by their tone they are giving him a hard time.
* ChildByRape: Conceived when Diva raped and killed Riku.
* HappilyAdopted: By Kai. Him raising them will ensure what happened throughout the story will never happen again.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: Hibiki has red eyes while Kanade has blue ones, [[GenerationXerox just like Saya and Diva]].
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Introduced in the final two episodes of the show.
* MeaningfulName: Hibiki means "echo" or "sound", which comes from her surname Otonashi that means the same thing. Meanwhile, Kanade means "performance", fitting for being a daughter of a performer and on her way to become one herself.
* NoNameGiven: In the anime. However, their names, Kanade (the blue-eyed twin) and Hibiki (the red-eyed one) were only revealed in the light novels.
* SignificantDoubleCasting: They share both [[Creator/AkikoYajima their parents]] and [[Creator/EriKitamura aunt's]] voice actors in Japanese.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: They're only born near the very end of the series, but they play a crucial role in Saya's defeat of Diva and subsequent survival, since Diva's blood [[PowerDegeneration lost its power]] when she conceived them.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Come ''Blood#''. Hibiki is virtually identical to her aunt Saya, right down to the BoyishShortHair and has her responsible personality, but wears glasses. Kanade, on the other hand, resembles her mother Diva physically and in personality, including her aptitude to music.
