Isshin's wife and the mother of Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu. She was a beautiful, sweet redhead who died when Ichigo was nine years old, protecting him from a Hollow that attacked the poor kid when they were walking by the local river. Her death completely changed the family dynamics: Ichigo was a crybaby but matured into a HotBlooded KnightTemplarBigBrother, Yuzu became a responsible and sweet caretaker, and the formerly tearful Karin toughened herself up so her family wouldn't worry. Little did they know, her murderer would be back later...

->Species: Quincy

-->Played by: Masami Nasagawa (live-action movie)
----
* ActionGirl: As a trained warrior, she didn't hesitate to jump into battle to save strangers from Hollows. She first met Isshin while saving his life from a Hollow designed by Aizen.
* AlliterativeName: Masaki Kurosaki.
* AmbiguousSituation: It's unclear what became of her soul after her death. Typically, Hollows devour the souls they kill, the only way to free them being to purify the Hollow with a Zanpakuto. As she was killed by Grand Fisher and his lure possessed a memory of her, this would imply he did devour her, and her soul was freed when Isshin killed him. Complicating things is that she's a Quincy, as Hollows are toxic to Quincy souls, but it's noted by others that Masaki somehow had a strong tolerance to White, managing to last a day before Isshin and Urahara needed to help her. In addition, right before Grand Fisher killed her, Yhwach conducted an Auswählen, which depowered her. So the questions are whether or not Masaki's Soul was destroyed by Grand Fisher, if her soul was already strong enough to survive destruction, and if the Auswählen occurring affected what became of her soul.
* ArrangedMarriage: She and Ryuken were set up together in an effort to preserve the Ishida family's Echt lineage. Neither Masaki nor Ryuken were thrilled about this.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: She's naked as a doll inside her own soul until she tries to glomp Isshin after he saves her from her inner Hollow. The outline of her areola and nipples are briefly visible at that point.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Yhwach stole her Quincy powers at the exact moment she was about to take on Grand Fisher, resulting in her tragic death.
* DeathByOriginStory: Her death is what spurred Ichigo to protect the weak and innocent so that they don't experience the same grief his family did after his mother died.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: When she couldn't hit White at a distance due to its speed, Masaki deliberately let it bite her, then shot it at point-blank range. She was counting on her Blutvene to tank the bite, but -- unfortunately for her -- Aizen's experiment was capable of breaking through.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: She perished in child Ichigo's arms.
* EnergyBow: Like the Ishida family, her weapon of choice appeared to be a Heilig Bogen, a bow made out of Reishi that she could also resize as necessary.
* FingerGun: She shows the ability to make a tiny Heilig Bogen with one hand, which she uses to BoomHeadshot a proto-Arrancar.
* GenkiGirl: As a teenager, she is naturally cheery, outgoing and rather energetic, but will also use that attitude to hide her troubles, such as her despair over knowing she's being groomed to marry Ryuuken.
* HiddenBuxom: Her schoolgirl uniform hid the fact that she was almost on par with Orihime as a teenager. Not so much when she wears a normal dress as an adult, though.
* KissingCousins: She was adopted into the Ishida clan because her own family was dead and she was a pure-blood Quincy. Ryuken's mother planned on marrying them off to preserve the Echt bloodline.
* MamaBear: When Ichigo chased after a girl on the riverbank, Masaki immediately recognized this as a Hollow's illusion and charged in to save his life. He only survived because she sacrificed her life for him, and she only lost because Yhwach stole her powers.
* MeetCute: Masaki and Isshin's plotline in "Everything but the Rain" is kooky, amusing and cute... but it also inadvertently breaks Ryuken in the process.
* MissingMom: She died when Ichigo was young.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: While she was never shown using Hollow powers, Masaki was -- at least until Ichigo was conceived and White jumped ship to him -- a Quincy with an Inner Hollow; something that shouldn't have even been possible due to Hollows' souls and spiritual energy being fatally toxic to Quincies. She was on the brink of undergoing Soul Suicide when Urahara and Isshin stabilized her, but the fact that she'd lasted almost a day after infection and started developing a Hollow Hole is impressive considering that other powerful Quincies started vomiting blood immediately after exposure to Urahara's Temporary Hollowfication medicine. Aizen comments on Masaki's incompatible uniqueness after White infects her, and this status was why Yhwach chose to kill her, seeing her as having been made impure.
* NoSparks: The fatal flaw in her arranged engagement to Ryuken: while the two of them care for each other as family, they are painfully aware of their romantic incompatibility.
* NotSoSmallRole: At the beginning of the story, she's the keystone of Ichigo's tragic backstory but otherwise tangential to the plot. Masaki became much more plot relevant when she was revealed as a powerful Quincy who had been victimised by Aizen and murdered by Yhwach. Two out of three parts of Ichigo's powers come from her and she is his connection to Yhwach.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: Masaki is one of four Posthumous CharactersAlong with Souken, Kaien, and Hisana whose deaths combine to create the reason the first two arcs of the story turn out the way they do. Even after that point, her death remains Ichigo's primary motivation to protect the ones he loves. The circumstances of her death are also very important in the Thousand Year Blood War.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died a good 6 years before the story began.
* RainOfArrows: Masaki was able to unleash a massive barrage of Heilig Pfeil from her Heilig Bogen, similar to her future second cousin Uryū Ishida's signature Licht Regen technique. The one time she's shown using this, her opponent -- White -- is able to easily evade them.
* RedStringOfFate: Her soul was tied to Isshin's by a Reishi thread to prevent her from Hollowfying... and Soul Reaper reishi forms red spirit ribbons, too.
* RescueRomance: Her relationship with Isshin began when she used her Quincy powers to save him from a powerful Hollow.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Masaki wanted to help against the proto-Arrancar that Isshin was fighting, but Ryuken tried to stop her, citing the rules against interacting with Shinigami and her shaky standing in the household. Masaki told Ryuuken that she wouldn't be able to forgive herself if there were casualties she could have prevented, and goes anyway. Ryuken then secretly breaks the rules to follow her.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She was completely okay with being naked in front of Isshin in her Inner World. Long before they formed any kind of romantic relationship. In fact, she found the situation hilarious.
* StepfordSmiler: While she seems energetic and happy before meeting Isshin, Ryuken reveals he's fully aware that she's hiding loneliness and despair.
* SuperToughness: According to Isshin, her Blut Vene was considered extraordinary tough, which made the case of White biting through her defense a very special case. No Hollow that came after was able to injure her again, until Grand Fisher got lucky that she lost her Quincy powers at that moment.
* TorsoWithAView: When White's Target Hollowfication takes effect, she develops a Hollow Hole and TaintedVeins at the base of her throat.
* WorfHadTheFlu: She could have easily curbstomped Grand Fisher, but her powers had been stolen right at that exact moment, resulting in her death.

----
Ichigo's younger, more tomboyish sister. She can see ghosts, but she chooses to ignore them.
----
* AbnormalAmmo: Whenever Karin tries her hand at Omake Hollow-slaying, it involves her kicking a Reiatsu-laced soccer ball into said Hollow's face. With varying and limited success.
* AlliterativeName: Karin Kurosaki.
* BigBrotherWorship: Not nearly as pronounced as Yuzu's but Karin does love Ichigo. She knows that he will ultimately never let her down and trusts him implicitly. When he was depowered for a time, she started to visit Urahara's shop for help in dealing with the stray spirits, like Ichigo used to.
* CharacterDevelopment: Starts off as a bratty kid who wants nothing to do with any spiritual nonsense to admitting to Urahara of all people, that she wants to protect Ichigo and their family in his place now that all his Shinigami powers were gone.
* DeadpanSnarker: She tends to lampshade the stupid antics of her family in a very calm, bored tone.
* DeclarationOfProtection: In the time-skip following The Winter War when she visits Urahara’s shop, she states to Urahara that since Ichigo has protected the family, it was time that she did the same for him.
* DontYouDarePityMe: According to Ichigo, Karin refused to cry after the death of their mother since she didn't want to be a burden. She breaks down crying after seeing the parakeet that Chad carries around was the soul of a human boy that saw his mother die.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Post-timeskip, her hair's grown out enough for a ponytail.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Karin's initial reaction to her ability to see spirits. Her attitude only seems to change once Ichigo loses his powers, where she begins visiting Urahara for spirit-fighting equipment.
* ImplausibleDeniability: Karin does not believe in ghosts. Despite being able to see them clear as day she considers them a pain so tries to deny their existence.
* Joshikousei: After the timeskip, she starts junior high, so can be seen wearing a sailor uniform a lot.
* FanServicePack: Puberty was very kind to Karin, who in contrast to Yuzu develops significantly following both timeskips. This is particularly emphasized in a swimsuit sketch of the female Bleach characters included in the Jet artbook, which has Karin posed in a way that accentuates her cleavage.
* LittleMissSnarker: With her father around, she's got plenty of material to work with.
* OneOfTheBoys: She's a member of the soccer team, where she's the only female member and by far the most masculine of the bunch.
* PolarOppositeTwins: As opposed to Yuzu, the aggressive, tomboyish Karin has black hair and dark eyes.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: As mentioned above, Karin in the epilogue has grown some curves and quite an attractive face to boot.
* ShipperOnDeck: She even mentions on how Orihime is more of Ichigo's type.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Karin bears a lot of physical resemblance to her father, from their hair color to their similar facial features. In the epilogue, ten years later, Karin bears a bit of a resemblance to Kukaku Shiba as well.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Yuzu's Girly Girl. She's the soccer-loving tomboy whose friends are all male.
* TomboyishPonytail: After the TimeSkip, which further emphasizes her usual aggressive, no-nonsense demeanor.
* UnexpectedSuccessor: Discussed in Literature/BleachCannotFearYourOwnWorld -- after Tokinada Tsunayashiro is informed by Byakuya and Yoruichi that neither Isshin or Ichigo want to become the head of the Shiba clan, he proposes bringing Karin or Yuzu to Soul Society and making them the leader.

-->Voiced by: Ayumi Sena (JP), Creator/JaniceKawaye (EN), Georgina Sánchez (Latin American Spanish)
-->Played by: Kokoro Hirosawa (live-action movie)
----
Fraternal twin of Karin. Unlike Ichigo and Karin, she begins the story with very weak spiritual power and therefore cannot see spirits as anything more than a very faint blur in the air.
----
* BigBrotherWorship: While both her and Karin adore Ichigo, Yuzu idolizes her older brother to such an extent that Karin teasingly implies she has an incestuous crush on him.
* BookSmart: She does so well at school that she achieves near-perfect scores in exams.
* CharacterDevelopment: Yuzu started off as polite and cheery. After the TimeSkip, she's still cheery, but a lot more temperamental.
* ChildrenDoTheHousework: Yuzu does most of the cooking, cleaning and shopping for the Kurosaki household. She's been doing all this since the age of five, at the time her mother died.
* DisneyDeath: She dies from overexposure to Hell's atmosphere in the Hell Verse movie, but later makes a recovery.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Post-timeskip, her hair's grown out enough for pigtails.
* GirlishPigtails: After the TimeSkip, she styles her pigtails at the back of her head, just over her shoulders.
* IncestSubtext: Karin implies that Yuzu has developed a crush on Ichigo after the first TimeSkip - which later extends to Kazui - and teases her over it, though Yuzu denies it in an unconvincing manner.
* Joshikousei: After the timeskip, she starts junior high, so can be seen wearing a sailor uniform a lot. She desperately wanted Ichigo to approve of her new look, and was furious when Ichigo barely reacted.
* KindheartedCatLover: Yuzu befriended the ghost of a cat once.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: She's the only one in the Kurosaki household that's unaware of Ichigo's job as a Soul Reaper.
* PolarOppositeTwins: The girlier Yuzu has pale brown hair and light brown eyes. She's also less aggressive, more willing to be the homemaker, and the more responsible twin.
* PromotionToParent: Yuzu takes over the domestic duties after her mom died.
* ShipperOnDeck: Along with Karin, Yuzu also approves of Ichigo and Orihime being in a relationship.
* SignatureHairDecs: Yuzu always wears little hairpins, often strawberries, which is an allusion to one of the meanings of Ichigo's name.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Yuzu looks like a much younger version of her mother.
* TeamMom: Yuzu has been the one holding the family together and keeping them well fed and cared for since the age of five.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Karin. She's the polite, sweet and homey "housewife" of the two.
* Tsundere: After the TimeSkip, Yuzu's moods start swinging between sweet and mild and angry and aloof. Karin and Isshin aren't certain how to handle it.

!!Kon

->Species: Mod soul
->Voiced by: Creator/MitsuakiMadono (JP), Creator/TiteKubo (JP, Memories in the rain OVA), Creator/QuintonFlynn (ENG), Creator/LuisAlfonsoMendoza (Latin American Spanish)
----
Kon is a Mod[ified] Soul, the product of a recalled Soul Society experiment in giving 'vacant' human bodies Hollow-killing powers. After a brief yet entertaining hijacking of Ichigo's body and the acquisition of his current stuffed toy body, he settles down into his role as comic relief. He's entrusted with Ichigo's body when Ichigo's out Hollow-hunting to maintain the Masquerade. He mostly dwells at Ichigo's home, but will attend school for Ichigo as necessary.
----
* AttentionWhore: When he originally got control of Ichigo's body, he was thrilled that his ability was enhanced leg strength since it let him stand out and get everyone's attention.
* BigBrotherInstinct: While Kon usually tries to avoid Yuzu because she treats him like a doll, he is protective of her and Karin and does what little he can to look after them when Ichigo is away.
* ButtMonkey: If you thought, "Are you forgetting Kon, how the hell do you forget Kon?", then that's because everyone forgets Kon. That's why he's pissed all the time.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Kon's view of women. He's willing to make an exception for Rukia, otherwise bust size determines his reaction.
%% * TheChewToy: Literally. He doesn't have much luck.
* ChivalrousPervert: Despite his love of boobs, Kon was terrified when he found a naked Nozomi Kujo in the parking lot.
* CaughtWithYourPantsDown: Upon returning from Soul Society, Ichigo walks in on Kon in his body, jerking off to an imagined threesome with Rukia and Orihime. He's less than impressed.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Most of the Invading Army Arc revolves around him and Nozomi since they're both Mod Souls. He even pulls a SpannerInTheWorks on the villain, who overlooked him as "worthless".
* EvilTwin: To Ichigo in his first appearance, though he's really more of a Delinquent than outright evil.
* ExtremityExtremist: He enhances the leg muscles of whatever body he inhabits, giving him great jumping and kicking abilities.
* GrandTheftMe: As a Mod-Soul, Kon was effectively designed to be a benevolent example, being an artificial soul that pilots a Soul Reaper's gigai while they're Hollow hunting. His first outing results in him taking Ichigo's body out for a joyride, causing trouble by acting very out of character and giving Tatsuki a ForcefulKiss. After his HeelFaceTurn, he pilots Ichigo's body while he's out on Substitute Soul Reaper business, but despite his personality being mostly the polar opposite of Ichigo's -- being a kindhearted, goofy, mostly-cowardly lecher -- he manages to pull it off well enough that Ichigo's friends and family can't tell the difference... until Isshin reveals he could tell all along that Ichigo was NotHimself.
* LivingToys: His main body when not indwelling Ichigo's is a cute lion plushy that he can control like it's flesh-and-blood.
* LovableCoward: He always tries to avoid any kind of conflict. However, he's shown that he's willing to die to protect the lives of people he doesn't even like.
* LovableSexManiac: Loves boobs. And Rukia. But mostly boobs.
* NoRespectGuy: Poor guy never gets treated seriously. Even the Mod-Souls from the filler-only Bount Arc don't think much of him.
* OutOfFocus: He disappeared from the main storyline, but Kubo drew some volume omakes indicating he'd been captured by the 12th Division during the Karakura Town Battle and experimented on by Mayuri and Urahara. After a hiatus, he reappeared in the main storyline confirming the experimentation had left him with some interesting new abilities.
* SuperSoldier: He was designed to fight hollows, but the major ethical issues involved caused the program to be halted. The proximity of the MoralEventHorizon can be gauged by the fact that the crapsack ethicists of Soul Society couldn't bring themselves to use the modsouls in combat.
* TechnicalPacifist: Kicks Hollows in the face, but won't kill even an ant if he can help it.
* TemporaryBulkChange: Courtesy of Mayuri tinkering with his body, he can suddenly become buff. Ichigo and Renji use him as a cushion when being launched from one city to the next during their time in the Soul King's domain. Doubles as a BrickJoke calling back to his mental image of himself in Chapter 22.

!!Soken Ishida

->Species: Quincy
->Weapon: Unnamed bow
->Voiced by: Eiji Maruyama (JP), David Lodge and Creator/LiamOBrien (EN), Eduardo Fonseca (ep. 14) and Miguel Ángel Sanromán (rest) (Latin American Spanish)
----
The wise old grandfather of Uryu Ishida, Soken was the Last Quincy prior to passing the title down to Ryuken Ishida. He was the person who put Uryu on the path to being a Quincy, despite Ryuken's objections.

He was killed when Uryu was a young child by a gang of five hollows. The Soul Reaper watchers were delayed in coming to his rescue because they had been bribed by Mayuri Kurotsuchi to sit back and collect Soken's soul after death. As part of Mayuri's Quincy experiments, Soken's soul had been tortured to death for information. He died swearing to the pride of the Quincy and with the name of either his grandson or his student on his lips. Mayuri claims he can't remember, baiting Uryu into confirming he was Soken's grandson and student.
----
* ActionDad: Soken was an active Quincy fighter despite having a family to raise. It meant he often missed dinner with his wife, son and Masaki, which greatly upset his wife.
* ColdBloodedTorture: After death, Soken's ghost is taken to Mayuri Kurotsuchi's lab where he's vivisected until second death, as Mayuri is trying to learn all he can about Quincies. Mayuri shows Uryu a photo of Soken's body at death, and while readers can only make out a bloodied head in the photo, Uryu's reaction is all too telling. Although Mayuri thought he learned everything there was to know and thus abandoned his Quincy research, he realizes he was wrong when Soken's student Uryu pulls off techniques he never saw in the lab. Since Mayuri never learned these techniques from Soken, it's strongly implied that Mayuri didn't know that he never broke Soken the way he thought he did.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Soken was killed by hollows, his soul was then dragged back to Mayuri's lab where he was experimented on and tortured for an unspecified period of time before Mayuri eventually tired of him and gruesomely killed him off.
* GoodIsOldFashioned: Soken was a gentle man who didn't believe in hating or teaching people to hate. He worked hard to try and make the Soul Reapers understand that everyone would benefit if the Quincies and Soul Reapers could find a way to work together, but died without ever being able to achieve that dream. The Vandenreich has commented that Soken was an old-fashioned traditionalist who rejected the modernization of the Quincies. Soken's descendants are the only Quincies who have so far been revealed to have been willing to work with Soul Reapers or even made allies or friends of Soul Reapers.
* GoryDiscretionShot: Soken's death is never directly visible. In Uryu's flashback to Soken's first death, we only see his reaction and a group of Soul Reapers standing respectfully around a lump carefully concealed by a blanket. In Soul Society, Mayuri shows Uryu a photo of Soken's body at death and a hazy reflection of the body can be seen in Uryu's eyes, implying mutilation and beheading but not clear enough to display any detail. The expression on Uryu's face, however, is very clear.
* EnergyBow: As a Quincy archer, Soken's main weapon was a bow made out of spiritual power.
* FigureItOutYourself: Soken refuses to tell Uryuu why Ryuken broke off ties with the Quincies. Instead, he explains that, on the day Uryu understands, Uryu will also question his devotion to the clan and face a mysterious enemy requiring him to break the limits of human power.
* LimitedWardrobe: Soken is only ever seen wearing one set of clothes, his Quincy uniform.
* MathematiciansAnswer: Uryu asked Soken whether Ryuken had told the truth about why he rejected the clan. Soken observed that it was MetaphoricallyTrue you couldn't make a living as a Quincy and Ryuken had a family to support...but punted on whether this was the real cause (hint: it wasn't). Uryu was too young to read between the lines, however, and continued to believe that his father was a money-obsessed Quincy-hater.
* MentorArchetype: Everything Uryu knows and believes about Quincies comes from what his grandfather taught him, including the attitude that it's wrong to blame the Soul Reapers for the Quincy massacre two centuries before. As Soken died in front of Uryu when Uryu was a young child, his teachings continue to influence Uryu via the power of flashback.
* MysteriousPast: Soken's life is seen only through flashbacks, and mostly from Uryu's (sometimes ill-informed) point-of-view. Despite knowing the Vandenreich existed, Soken referred to himself as "the Last Quincy" and anointed Ryuken his successor. Haschwalth confirms that Soken was exiled from the Vandenreich and it's implied he barely escaped with his life. While all of the powerful artefacts that Soken passed to Uryu were stolen from the Vandenreich, it's still not clear what happened between Soken and the Vandenreich, what role Soken forced upon Ryuken, or why Soken felt it was so important for the Soul Reapers and Quincies to start working together.
* OldMaster: Soken possessed the knowledge of all the Quincy techniques and traditions, which he passed down to Ryuken, including very rare techniques such as Letzt Stil and Ransoutengai that he passed on to Uryu.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: Soken is one of the four characters Along with Masaki, Kaien, and Hisana whose deaths combine to create the reason the first two arcs of the story come out the way they do. Witnessing his grandfather's death drives Uryu to challenge then befriend Ichigo, which in turn kickstarts the Soul Society arc by attracting the Soul Reapers' attention. Throughout the rest of the series, Soken's desire for peace between the Soul Reapers and the Quincies keeps Uryuu involved with Ichigo. His tuition of Uryu is also a driving force behind Uryuu's nasty estrangement from Ryuken.
* PosthumousCharacter: He's introduced through flashbacks to his grandson's youth and training, but he died when Uryu was a young child. In the final arc, it's implied he was an important opposition figure within the Quincy Clan and as such shaped the present in unseen ways. Until he forced Ryuken to inherit the title, Soken used to be called "the Last Quincy" despite knowing that an entire Quincy organization existed.
* OutdatedOutfit: Soken is only ever seen wearing the traditional uniform of the Quincies, which is so antiquated that it doesn't fit in at all well with the modern era. Lampshaded by a very young Uryu, who asks if the Quincy uniform will ever be modernized into something less old-fashioned - a wish that is unintentionally granted when the modern Vandenreich reveal their new wardrobe.
* TragicDream: Soken's greatest desire was for the Soul Reapers and the Quincies to find a way to coexist peacefully and work together to prevent Hollow attacks. He desperately wanted to make sure another massacre never happened again. For most of the story, the only surviving Quincies were believed to be Soken's last practicing student, Uryu, and Ryuken, meaning Soken's dream was likely doomed. Then it was revealed that other Quincies do still exist, with the Vandenreich's invasion of Soul Society. And now the two sides are back in active war, further than ever from a lasting peace. The last frail hope is the OddFriendship between the Kurosakis (who aren't even official Soul Reapers) and the Ishidas (who are the last remnant of a dissident Quincy faction).
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: In flashback, Soken seems to spend a lot of time at "Fifth Field", although he's clearly still a voice of authority in the household. But his frequent absences definitely compound the problems between the other members of the family: it leaves his wife lonely and irritable, and she takes out her frustrations on Masaki. Ryuken has to mediate between his mother and fiancée, with no one he trusts enough to confide in except Katagiri...which leads to Ryuken and Masaki keeping some very, very dangerous secrets. Uryu's memories of Soken show him much more involved in family life, suggesting he may have regretted the unintentional consequences of being gone so often.

----
Izumi Ishida is an Echt Quincy who is Ryuken's mother, Soken's wife, and Uryuu's grandmother. She appears in the "Everything But The Rain" mini-flashback arc, and is shown to be a strict, but caring middle-aged woman.
----
* AwfulWeddedLife: Zig-zagged; she loves her husband, but Ryuken theorizes that because his father spends so much time away from home Izumi has become grumpy and lonely as a result, ultimately taking out her frustrations on Masaki.
* GameBreakingInjury: Izumi's leg is notoriously scarred, possibly an injury from a previous battle. When Ryuken runs away from home using Hirenkyaku while trying to save Masaki, Izumi is unable to follow him.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: She is only known as "Mrs. Ishida" in the manga. Her first name was revealed when Masaki called her "Aunt Izumi" in the corresponding episode.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks like an older and female version of her grandson without glasses.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: She is only shown in flashback and is never be mentioned by either her son or her grandson, leaving it unknown whether she was one of Yhwach's victims or if she passed away from natural causes.

----
The director of Karakura General Hospital and Uryu's estranged father. He opposed Uryu's desire to train as a Quincy so relentlessly that Uryu has been left too angry and bitter to either live under his father's roof or acknowledge his parentage: he refers to Ryuken by first name instead of calling him "father". Soken has implied that Ryuken's driven by a need to protect Uryu from something, but Uryu is too angry to pay attention.

Although he refuses to use his own Quincy power, Ryuken is apparently much stronger than Uryu. He and Isshin have known each other for over twenty years and their relationship is a more mature equivalent of the relationship between their two sons.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: He and Masaki were supposed to be married in order to preserve the "pure" Quincy blood.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Ryuken rarely wears anything but white suits in the manga (beige in the anime), justified in that he's the director of a major urban hospital and has to be professionally dressed. He's also a very powerful Quincy and capable of kicking much ass (including curbstomping his very talented son) without even removing his jacket or loosening his tie.
* BeneathNotice: His rejection of his Quincy heritage in favor of a normal life as a doctor, despite his great power and talent, means that Yhwach and the rest of the Vandenreich basically don't even realize he exists.
* BestServedCold: [[spoiler:After his wife is killed by Yhwach's Auswählen, Ryuken performs an extensive autopsy on her corpse that lasts several days in order to find the root cause of her death. He discovers a special silver clot that developed in her heart as a result of the technique and forges it into an arrowhead. He then spends the next decade deliberately alienating himself from the remaining Quincy including his own father and son as well as the spiritual world in general in order to stay beneath Yhwach's notice. Ryuken finally delivers the arrowhead to Uryu just before the final battle, allowing him and Ichigo to kill Yhwach once and for all and avenging his wife.]]
* BetaCouple: With Kanae in "Everything but the Rain". Their very serious relationship Foil contrasts with the freespirited romance between Isshin and Masaki. Unfortunately, it's just as ill-fated.
* BlatantLies: Uryu's not the only lousy liar in this family.
** Uryu's the only one who still believes Ryuken's lies about not wanting to be a Quincy because there's no profit in it. Granted, Uryu was only about 8 or so at the time, but his father's hesitation in answering and his grandfather's FigureItOutYourself make it very obvious that Ryuken's real motives concern his son's well-being.
** His statement to Katagiri in "Everything but the Rain" that the only future worth worrying about is that of the clan as a whole is pretty clearly an evasion, although she takes it at face value.
* BrokenBird: As a teenager, Ryuken was expected to protect the Quincy future. Aizen's Hollowfication experiments accidentally ruin his ability to do that; crushed by failure, he attempts to walk away from both his family and the Quincies and is stopped only when his NinjaMaid insists on joining him in exile. Sometime after they MarryForLove, she's eventually murdered by the Quincy King, cementing the bitter, cynical, anti-Quincy attitude that his son Uryu has grown up frustrated with, but has not been allowed to know the truth about.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: In "Everything but the Rain", Ryuken and Katagiri are this trope to the very letter. Ryuken is torn between his personal desires and his duty to his family, and Katagiri is plagued by hidden feelings for a boy she believes is unattainable.
* CannotSpitItOut: For whatever reason, Ryuken never seemed to think simply telling his son what really happened to his mother was a good idea. Instead he actively antagonizes and distances himself from his son to the point Uryu felt joining the Vandenreich was a better option to learn the truth.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: In 536 Katagiri tells Ryuken that she's loved him since the day they met--and we see a tiny boy and girl gazing at each other from behind their mothers' legs. Kanae becomes FirstGirlWins when Ryuken's arrangement with Masaki falls apart.
* CombatPragmatist: After restoring Uryu's powers, Ryuken berates his (unconscious) son for using a defensive spell as his last-ditch attempt to escape instead of an offensive option that might have caused injury or even death. The general gist of his criticism is, "If you seriously think I'm going to kill you, it doesn't matter that we're related! Try to kill me back!"
* Courier: What his role is in the Final Arc in the present storyline outside of the flashbacks in which he delivers the Still-Silver Arrow to his son Uryu.
* CursedWithAwesome: His attitude towards his Quincy powers to the point where he claims he's incapable of getting rid of his powers even if he tries. Considering what Yhwach could do with Auswhalen to any Quincy he chooses, it makes sense.
* DirtyCoward: InUniverse, Uryu seems to think so. While Ryuken obviously is no coward when it comes to a fight, and obviously goes out of his way to save Uryu more than once, Ryuken doesn't do much to disabuse his son of this notion.
* DrJerk: When viewed through his son's eyes, he certainly appears to be one, although an early manga scene suggests otherwise when Isshin tells an orderly at the hospital that Ryuken would free up bed space if he knew Isshin was the one asking. Later on, when he's seen interacting with people other than his son like Ichigo and Orihime he's actually a much gentler, kinder and even protective personality. Flashbacks suggest Ryuken's cultivating a mask and allowing Uryu to believe the very worst about him...for reasons that are still unclear.
* ExactWords:
** In a flashback, a very young Uryu demands to know why Ryuken objects to Quincies. Ryuken states he has no interest and Uryu has no talent. When Uryu demands to know why he hates being a Quincy so much, he claims it's because there's no money in it. Years later, he tells Uryu that having no interest shouldn't be interpreted as having no power, it should instead be interpreted as having power he doesn't want to use and cannot get rid of.
** In "Everything but the Rain", Ryuken lies through his teeth to Katagiri that the only future he's worried about is that of the Quincy clan as a whole. She repeats his ExactWords back to him when he angrily demands to know why she told his mother about Masaki's injury and he reacts with guilt and horror.
* Foil:
** For Isshin, in the same way that Uryu is for Ichigo. They're both fathers with missing wives and mysterious pasts. They both seem oblivious to their sons' paranormal activities then turn up to fix things when their sons are in trouble. Despite their common circumstances, however, they're as different as night and day. Isshin hides behind a moronic mask whereas Ryuken's mask is aloof, stoic and sarcastic. Lampshaded in chapter 241 when Isshin and Ryuken debate whose parenting is worse.
** Yhwach is the black-themed First Quincy, while Ryuken is the white-themed Last Quincy. For all that he claims to hate violence, Yhwach is aggressive, abusive, and surrounds himself with subordinates he cruelly mistreats. For all his protestations of detachment, Ryuken is gentle and caring, and distances himself from those he loves for their own protection. Yhwach thrives on wholesale slaughter (literally and figuratively); Ryuken has devoted his life to medicine and healing.
* GenerationXerox: His relationship with Isshin is similar to that of their sons.
* HeroicBSOD: The Everything but the Rain flashback arc is a MeetCute story for Isshin and Masaki...and a nightmare for Ryuken, who by trying to protect Masaki from his mother's criticism exposes to her a corrupting Hollow influence that ends up threatening her soul. Isshin--a Soul Reaper and thus the family's sworn enemy--is the only one who can save her from it and Ryuken's hopes for preserving the Quincy clan are ended. He walks out into the GrayRainOfDepression intending never to return home. Only Katagiri's YouAreNotAlone convinces him to turn back in the end.
* HeroicNeutral: Ryuken is a Quincy of exceptional power who utterly refuses to use his power and wants his clan to be declared extinct after his father's death. He will not support any of the story's major factions and only picks up his bow to restore Uryu's power after Letz Stil. How he came to IJustWantToBeNormal this neutrality from his youthful idealism is still only partially explained. With the final arc it seems he may be headed for a NeutralNoLonger fate.
* HeroismWontPayTheBills: When a very young Uryu asks his father why he hates being a Quincy so much, Ryuken states it's because there's no money in it. Upset, Uryu asks his grandfather if Ryuken is telling the truth. Soken explains that if looked at from the view that Ryuken has a family to feed, it's true. Despite his intelligence, Uryu doesn't seem to realize his father's comment was BlatantLies or that his grandfather was giving him a MathematiciansAnswer.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Uryu so sincerely believes his father's jerkass attitude that he assumes Ryuken is trying to kill him instead of restoring his powers as promised. It was actually a brutal restoration technique that required the target's body and soul be pushed to the absolute limit before being shot by a spiritual arrow, forcing Ryuken to make Uryu think he was going to die for the technique to work at all. Ryuken seems to encourage Uryu to think the absolute worst about him. However, Isshin greatly trusts Ryuken as both a colleague and friend and Ryuken is also gentle and protective towards Ichigo and Orihime behind Uryu's back. Flashbacks reveal that Ryuken is a very decent man BeneathTheMask but prefers to appear uncaring for reasons that have been only partially explained.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: So he says, but he also walks around in a white suit, wears a tie covered in crosses and just happens to always carry the Quincy Cross wherever he's goes. Not a bad Quincy shout-out package for a man who claims to loathe his Quincy roots and power. Flashbacks indicate he once believed the clan's future was more important than his own personal fate.
* ImplausibleHairColor: Confirmed by official art as white, not blond. The anime gives him darker hair in flashback (which creates its own implausibility as it implies he went completely white in less than 8 years) but in the manga his hair has been white since childhood, with no explanation.
* ImprobableAge: Ryuken is only 40 years old at most At most 18 in "Everything but the Rain", since he's in high school, and that occurs 20 years prior to the main story, yet he's the director of a major urban hospital. Most Japanese doctors do not even qualify fully in their chosen specialty until at least age 30 or 31. Uryu's flashbacks to his childhood (where his school uniform can pin down his age to a narrow range) suggest Ryuken's been the director for years already. Even for a man who's intelligent enough to keep up with Urahara, Ryuken's ridiculously young for his job.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: In order to restore Uryu's powers, Ryuken has to be able to put an arrow through a chakra point 19mm to the right of the sinoatrial node of his son's heart without damaging the tissue around it. Uryu wasn't even standing still for this. He was trying to dodge. Ryuken may be a surgeon and well-versed on the inside of the human body but performing unanaesthetized heart surgery on your offspring with a giant flaming energy arrow still takes some serious NervesOfSteel.
* KissingCousins: His family wanted him to keep the Quincy blood strong, so he was set up to marry another pure-blood Quincy. Masaki was adopted into the Ishida clan when her family was killed off because his mother planned on marrying them off. It didn't happen, of course.
* JadeColouredGlasses: Flashbacks reveal that he used to be a WideEyedIdealist who was under a lot of pressure to protect the future of the Quincies. A series of disasters occurred that culminated in him suffering an HeroicBSOD. At some point between that event and the main storyline, his HeroicBSOD slid over the DespairEventHorizon and he's now very attached to the jade-coloured glasses he wears for all things Quincy. His son, who doesn't know the truth, is extremely frustrated with it.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Ryuken's cold treatment of Uryu and habit of lying to him about a lot of important details disguise the genuine care he has for Uryu. The real trouble is that Ryuken's a controlling stoic jerk with communication issues.
* LastOfHisKind: Ryuken officially inherited Soken's mysterious title of 'Last Quincy' and he's the only Echt not involved with the Vandenreich. In fact, most of the Vandenreich don't seem to know he exists.
* MarryForLove: He rather unhappily observes to Katagiri that his ArrangedMarriage isn't the answer to the future of the Quincies and is startled when she observes that what he seems to want is to marry for love. His ArrangedMarriage falls through and eventually he does MarryForLove -- with Katagiri.
* MetaphoricallyTrue: In a flashback, a very young Uryu asks his father why he hates being a Quincy so much. IJustWantToBeNormal Ryuken replies there's no money in it. When Uryu asks Soken if Ryuken's telling the truth, Soken mulls it over and then says that, if viewed from the angle that being a Quincy doesn't put food on the table and Ryuken has a son to look after, what Ryuken said can indeed be viewed as the truth. Soken indicates that Ryuken's actually lying through his teeth and when he sees Uryu can't understand that, goes on to tell Uryu that one day he will understand Ryuken's secret.
* MysteriousPast: What made him hate being a Quincy? Why did he want to give up his powers? Why can't he? Why did Soken give him the Quincy Cross despite all this? What is he protecting? What secret is he carrying that will make Uryu debate giving up being a Quincy? And so on. Only beginning to be explained as of the Thousand Year Blood War Arc.
* NoSparks: The fatal flaw in his arranged engagement to Masaki: while the two of them care for each other as family, they are always painfully aware of their romantic incompatibility.
* OddFriendship: With Isshin. We see their first meeting in "Everything but the Rain" and it does begin to explain the vitriolic but trusting relationship between them.
* ParentExMachina: He first shows up outside of flashbacks to save Uryu's life and restore his powers.
* PetTheDog: Ryuuken's interactions with Orihime and Ichigo in the Fullbringer Arc. He makes sure Uryu's friends know he's going to be okay, encourages them to share information, and takes steps to make sure Orihime gets home safely. Also, his interactions with Masaki in "Everything but the Rain": Ryuken is no happier about the ArrangedMarriage than she is, but he tries his best to make the situation tolerable, even going so far as covering for Masaki when she breaks the rules.
* PillarsOfMoralCharacter: As a high-ranking pure-blood, Ryuken was expected to set an example for all Quincies. This leads to a giri ("duty") conflict in "Everything but the Rain" between his obligation to uphold the clan's rules and his responsibility to make his fiancee's life more bearable. Asked to choose between upholding an impersonal code of behavior and making another person miserable, Ryuken chooses compassion, following Masaki out into the rain to make sure she's okay and even attempting to take the blame when she gets into trouble for it.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Ryuken is a Quincy of exceptional power who utterly refuses to use his power and wants his clan to be declared extinct after his father's death.
* RetiredBadass: He told Uryu that he doesn't like being a Quincy because it doesn't pay the bills. However, when he is forced to use his power, he reveals he's much stronger than Uryu. Compared to Isshin, who immediately returned to action as soon as he regained his powers, Ryuken's a voluntary version of this trope who refuses to explain why he chose an HeroicNeutral path.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Moreso than his son. Note that Urahara is nervous about getting on Ryuken's bad side when he shows up to ask Uryu to join the rescue mission to Hueco Mundo.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: When Masaki insists on breaking the Quincy rules to save Isshin, despite having lectured her on the importance of obedience, Ryuken secretly breaks the very same rules himself to follow her just in case she needs support.
* TheSnarkKnight: For all that he holds Uryu to what seem to be impossibly high standards, Ryuken's also his own worst critic. This can be seen in his conversation with Isshin in Chapter 241, when he admits he's a horrible father, and also in his HeroicBSOD at the end of "Everything but the Rain", when he blames himself for not being able to fix everything that's gone pear-shaped, even though most of it was legitimately beyond his control. The final arc also reveals Uryu really is capable of achieving the standards his father's been setting for him, so Ryuken appears to be harsher on himself than on his son.
* StepfordSnarker: Thanks to everything that ruined his Quincy future, doomed his cousin and killed his wife, Ryuken's been forced to learn the hard way to hide his gentle, protective nature behind a bitterly sarcastic mask that makes him very hard for Uryu to deal with. The only time he drops the act is when he steps in to get Orihime home safely. Notably, he waits until he's away from Uryu before doing so.
* StoicSpectacles: Again, more so than Uryu -- he's cold, collected, and infuriatingly aloof.
* TranquilFury: It is incredible how patiently and calmly he waited to avenge his wife, Kanae. Let this sink in: When Yhwach caused his wife's death, he silently did a multi-day autopsy to find the cause (so coldly his son was traumatized to never become a doctor until he discovered the truth), found the cause, made it into a weapon to basically kill Yhwach, and patiently waited almost a decade to kill him with it; all the while never losing his composure once. All that said, you understand why even Urahara is worried about getting on his bad side.
* UptownGuy: As an Echt, Ryuken was a Quincy BlueBlood from one of the most powerful families alive and expected to marry another Echt. As a Gemischt, Katagiri was Ryuken's servant and bodyguard. Only when the ArrangedMarriage plan fell through were Ryuken and Katagiri allowed to MarryForLove but she died six years before the main story in the same event that ultimately killed Masaki.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He'll never admit that Isshin is his only friend.
* YouAreNotAlone: The events of the Everything but the Rain arc shatter Ryuken's hopes for the future of the Quincies and reduce him to such despair he has no intention of ever going back home. Katagiri tells him she won't ever leave his side so if he refuses to go home, she will, too. It's the only thing that convinces him to turn back.

----
A young woman employed as a maid by the Ishida family. Polite and well-mannered, she appears to be Ryuken's main confidante and the person he turns to when fighting is required.
----
* ActionGirl: Ryuken singles out Katagiri as his fighter of choice when discussing the subject of mixed bloods fighting instead of purebloods. When he does go to fight, she is his first choice for battle partner. Although they don't actually get to fight on that occasion, she's introduced from the outset as a highly competent Quincy warrior who also happens to be female.
* AlliterativeName: Kanae Katagiri.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: She pulls this on Ryuken as part of a YouAreNotAlone speech. It's so utterly heart-wrenching and genuine that he pulls himself out of his HeroicBSOD before she can break down as badly as he did.
* BodyguardCrush: She's not just Ryuken's faithful bodyguard, she's also his late wife and Uryu's mother.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: In "Everything but the Rain", Ryuken and Katagiri are this trope to the very letter. Ryuken is torn between his personal desires and his duty to his family, and Kanae is plagued by hidden feelings for a boy she believes is unattainable.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: In Chapter 536 she tells Ryuken that she's loved him since the day they met--and we see a tiny boy and girl gazing at each other from behind their mothers' legs. Kanae becomes FirstGirlWins when Ryuken's arrangement with Masaki falls apart.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Imagine being a member of a clan of humans whose very blood belongs to a progenitor king who can rescind your power and your very life-force at any moment he chooses just to make himself stronger. Kanae's life and power were sucked right out of her without warning as part of a "purification" of mixed-ancestry and Hollow-contaminated Quincies to restore the Emperor's power. It took her three months to die.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: She was asked to keep it secret that Masaki had protected a Soul Reaper from a Hollow. However, she noticed that Masaki had been injured by the Hollow and, knowing the lingering Hollow reiatsu would endanger the family's future, she felt forced into revealing the truth to Ryuken's mother. Kanae is very quickly proven right when the full truth of Masaki's injury is revealed.
* LastNameBasis: While she's employed by the Ishida family as Ryuken's servant and bodyguard, Ryuken refers to her by her last name. Only Isshin's narration fills in her first name.
* TheLostLenore: It's heavily implied that her death in Yhwach's purge is one of the biggest reasons why Ryuken turned his back on the Quincies, and therefore the crux of the estrangement between her son and husband.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Kanae tells Ryuken that she's loved him since the moment they first met, when they were small children. Eventually, after his ArrangedMarriage collapses, they MarryForLove.
* MarryForLove: She gets Ryuken eventually, but he has to survive a collapsed ArrangedMarriage first.
* NinjaMaid: She works as a servant and maid for the Ishida family, but she's also Ryuuken's partner in battle.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: She dies as a result of Yhwach's power-sucking pogrom of Quincies deemed insufficiently "pure", collapsing into a coma on the same day Masaki died and expiring 3 months later. This has an important impact on her husband's actions for the next 9 years and important implications for Uryu in the final arc.
* PosthumousCharacter: She died six years before the story began. The killing strike was dealt on the same day Ichigo's mother died and for the same reason, but she remained in a coma for three months before finally dying. The story itself doesn't introduce her until the final arc.
* ShipTease: There's a lot with Ryuken. It's eventually confirmed that she is indeed Ryuken's late wife and Uryu's mother.
* UndyingLoyalty: She views it as her responsibility to protect Ryuken, no matter what the cost. She's also his only personal confidante in the dysfunctional Ishida household.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She fits both the physical description (long dark hair, wide eyes, modestly and femininely dressed) and the personality traits (clearly has domestic skills since she works as a maid, holds UndyingLoyalty to Ryuken, a competent Quincy warrior when necessary). And her silk does hide some serious steel: she's the one to convince Ryuken to return home after his nasty HeroicBSOD. And she does so via a gentle, heartfelt appeal instead by force.

----
A martial arts prodigy and Ichigo's childhood friend and former sparring partner. Best friends and self-appointed protector of Orihime from bullies and classmate Chizuru.
------
* ActionGirl: While her burgeoning powers ultimately end up going nowhere, she's regardless quite the badass martial artist and more than capable of taking down any punk fools who cross her - just not quite capable of fighting Hollows or anything else spiritual.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her blue eyes from the manga became brown in the anime.
* BadassNormal: Tatsuki is a talented martial artist with just enough spiritual power to see ghosts, but against the series' threats she's only human.
* BoyishShortHair: Tatsuki has an aggressive personality, is too masculine for Chizuru's taste, and who used to be better than Ichigo at karate. Fittingly, she has the short, spiky hair common to anime males to go with her personality. After the time-skip, she grows out her hair and becomes more noticeably feminine in appearance -- if not personality.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy:
** Numb Chandelier, a Hollow summoned by Ishida's bait, infects Tatsuki with her Bulb Scatter ability and forces her to attack Orihime despite Tatsuki struggling to resist it. Fortunately, Orihime awakens her Fullbring -- Shun Shun Rika -- and heals Tatsuki before angrily slicing the sadistic Hollow in half.
** Tsukishima uses his Fullbring, Book of the End, to alter Tatsuki's past so that he was one of her close childhood friends, resulting in Tatsuki becoming violently protective of him and berating Ichigo for attacking him.
* BullyHunter: Kids at school used to pick on Orihime because of her hair color, so she would cut it short in hopes they'd leave her alone. They didn't, so Tatsuki put a stop to it by stomping said bullies flat 'til they got the message. Since then, Orihime has let her hair grow long as a sign of gratitude and as a symbol of their friendship.
* ChildhoodFriends: She starts out the story as Ichigo's oldest and closest friend, introducing him to Orihime and providing important exposition about his past.
* DesignatedVictim: She has fallen prey to every single spiritual power she has encountered so far in the series, with the most recent being Tsukishima's "Book of the End".
* Determinator: The few times she's been faced with a real challenge, she's refused to give up until she was knocked out.
* FanservicePack: Tatsuki was originally drawn with a small bust, though the cover of Chapter 42 -- showing her wearing a mostly-unbuttoned shirt with no bra underneath -- hinted that she was more buxom than she usually appeared; and in the anime Kon teases her about it in one of his "Radion Kon" skits and Tatsuki indignantly retorts that she's at least a C-cup and only appears flat-chested next to Orihime's gargantuan boobs. Following the 17 month time-skip, her school uniform is drawn to more noticably accentuate her curves, and in artwork drawn by Kubo for a Bleach trading card game pre-timeskip Tatsuki is drawn as being noticeably more buxom than she was during the early portion of the manga's run.
* HeirToTheDojo: In an online Q&A, Kubo revealed that Tatsuki's tough-sounding name, hot-blooded personality, and proficiency for martial arts are due to her family owning the dojo where she and Ichigo trained as children, with her parents expecting her to take over running it.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Tatsuki first met Orihime while protecting her from the bullies who used to pick on her, which is why Orihime stopped cutting her hair and allowed it to grow long. For Orihime, it's her expression of gratitude and a symbol of her friendship with Tatsuki.
* HiddenBuxom: Her breasts are only noticeable during certain scenes, or manga panels, depending on the camera angle. When Kon calls Tatsuki flat-chested in one of his "Radion Kon" skits, she replies that she's at least a C-cup, but withholds her exact measurement. Eventually confirmed years later when Kubo released a set of official trading cards for Bleach, including one of Tatsuki in a sports top which shows she has C-cup sized breasts; making it an InUniverse case of being vindicated by history.
* ISeeDeadPeople: She started to gain this ability early on in the story, allowing her the ability to see and interact with spirits but, without powers, she can't fight supernatural threats. That doesn't stop her trying though.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: For a large portion of the story, she knows that her two best friends, Ichigo and Orihime, are up to something. She desperately wants to know what, and when Ichigo refuses to tell her after she confronts him, she doesn't take it well. Tatsuki finally gets the explanation she's owed after "Deicide".
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The masculine girl to Ichigo's feminine boy when they were children. He was a crybaby, she beat people up for him.
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: She's a black belt in karate and finished 2nd in her age group, during a regional tournament. Plus, she stomps bullies flat. Which is why Chizuru said she's never tried hitting on Tatsuki, despite finding her attractive. And, after seeing the way she reacted during the Kon incident, most of the guys at school agree.
* OneOfTheBoys: Most of her friends are male. She's into computer games and martial arts. She's aggressive, boisterous and more open with her emotions than well-bred women are supposed to be. When she and Ichigo were children, they used to train at the same dojo: she always used to win their bouts, and when he finally defeated her, he quit.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Tatsuki is a skilled martial artist, but aside from her ability to see ghosts she doesn't have any supernatural powers and can't take part in fighting Hollows or even protect her friends, which frustrates her. On a more humorous level, when Kon calls her flat-chested in one of the "Radio Kon" skits, Tatsuki points out that she has a C-cup and only seems flat-chested due to always hanging out with Orihime, who is super-busty.
* PlatonicLifePartners: Her relationship with Ichigo, at least up until his Soul Reaper activities start interfering with his social life. Their friendship recovers after she, Keigo and Mizuiro learn the full truth about what's been happening. This is played for laughs when Orihime immodestly jumps out of a classroom window to join Tatsuki and Ichigo, who end up bickering about chastising Orhime's behaviour like parents who disagree on the best way to punish an unruly child.
* SecretKeeper: For Ichigo, Orihime, and the rest of her supernatural friends.
* ShipperOnDeck: Tatsuki graphically lectures Orihime on how to snare Ichigo.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tatsuki is aggressive and boisterous, into martial arts and computer games, and most of her friends are male. She's never afraid to show her emotions when something bothers her, which well-bred ladies are not supposed to do. In contrast to Tatsuki, Orihime is mild-mannered, and doesn't show her distaste even when receiving unwanted advances. Chizuru doesn't fancy Tatsuki because she's too "masculine", whereas she thinks Orihime is a flower of womanhood and would love to turn Orihime onto the joys of female love... if not for Tatsuki standing in the way.

->Species: Human
->Voiced by: Creator/JunFukuyama (JP), Jamie Simone (ENG), Javier Olguín (Latin American Spanish)
----
Friend and classmate of Ichigo's and foil to Keigo, generally playing the StraightMan in their group. Yet another with burgeoning spiritual power.
----
* ActionSurvivor: Upon waking up in a sleeping city, the first things he grabs are food, water, a cell phone charger, a gasoline canister, and stun guns for everyone.
* DissonantSerenity: He doesn't seem too fazed by all the crazy stuff going on around him, even after seeing the guy who's trying to kill them disintegrate objects with his reiatsu.
* KidAnova: Surprisingly successful, judging by chapter 0.8. He's able to get a homemade meal almost every day despite not living with his mother or knowing how to cook himself.
* ISeeDeadPeople: It's unclear exactly when he gained this ability but he's certainly among the spiritually aware in the Arrancar Arc.
* LikesOlderWomen: Stated to have a preference for older women. Considering he's estranged from his mother, that has... interesting implications.
* LonelyRichKid: His life before meeting Keigo, Ichigo, and Chad hints at this trope.
* MissingMom: She's still very much alive, but he lives with his girlfriend of the moment and doesn't pay her much mind.
* NervesOfSteel: Unlike Keigo's hysterics, Mizuiro's reactions to the weird happenings in Karakura range from dismissive to DissonantSerenity.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: He's small, dark-haired and pale-skinned. He's considered to have the face of an angel and is viewed by women as incredibly cute. In fact, he's a ChickMagnet.
* SecretKeeper: Much like Tatsuki and Keigo, he's one of the only humans who's fully in the loop about Ichigo's Soul Reaper adventures (and by extension, those of other classmates as well).
* ThoseTwoGuys: Keigo and Mizuiro are two of Ichigo's oldest friends and are always together. Keigo is the outgoing funny-man while Mizuiro is the quiet, introverted leader of the pair. Although they develop enough power to see the spirit world, their involvement in the main storyline is peripheral as they have no way of fighting the spiritual threats that exist. During the Deicide mini-arc, their lack of power doesn't stop them from briefly confronting Aizen when he tries to kill them just to incite Ichigo's rage. Mizuiro creates a home-made Molotov cocktail at Aizen in an attempt to buy them enough time to flee.

----
Third member of Ichigo's group at the beginning of the series and the most energetic of the three. Usually shown with Mizuiro.
----
* ActionSurvivor: When Aizen enters Karakura town, he pulls out his hidden competency and nerve and manages to hold things together quite well.
* ButtMonkey: He's always being blown off by his friends or smacked around by his older sister. He's the one who ends up in crazy situations and freaking out or becomes the voice of cynical disbelief whenever Mizuiro does something weirdly off-kilter.
* BookDumb: He apparently takes pride in ranking low on exam scores, but he's actually incredibly resourceful and street-smart. He even acts as the de facto leader of the group while they flee Aizen's pursuit, and shows a lot of ingenuity and observation in the process, such as the fact that a Zanpakuto would be a better weapon against Aizen than anything else available. For someone with only a very basic knowledge of Soul Reapers, he certainly learns quick.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Keigo's view of women is that the bigger their chest size, the more irresistible they are. Chest size acts as his main guide in how he reacts to women.
* DumbIsGood: Takes great pride in his lack of academic achievement and is a NiceGuy, sort of. Mizuiro does once tell Ichigo that Keigo's actually much smarter than he lets on, but for some reason refuses to use it.
* Flanderization: Trope. He starts off as goofy and slightly neurotic before appearing to be used in the manga only to freak out over something. Then the Deicide arc occurs and he turns out not only to be incredibly calm and rational under extreme stress, but he actually realises that fighting supernatural threats requires a zanpakutou. He therefore obtains one from an unconscious Soul Reaper so that he can fight Aizen to buy his classmates time to escape. Fortunately, the unconscious Soul Reaper wakes up and stops him before he commits an HeroicSacrifice. Unfortunately for the anime, the anime team clearly never expected the Deicide arc to ever happen, because his goofy antics are dialled up in filler; at one point he makes a joke about Ichigo seeing something that he can't and within thirty seconds he's literally running away screaming.
* HiddenDepths: It seems Ikkaku and Yumichika's influence has rubbed off on him; he is much braver than he appears to be and in truly life-threatening situations, calms down, takes charge and makes very sensible decisions - in short, the exact opposite of his normal behaviour.
* ISeeDeadPeople: He was able to see Hollows and Soul Reapers at the beginning of the Arrancar Arc. As he was present when Ichigo and Uryuu fought their first Menos Grande, but couldn't see spirits at that point, he gained his ability somewhere between then and the first appearance of the Espada. His constant attempts to strike up conversations with Zennosuke leaves the Soul Reaper regularly freaked out and baffled.
* Keet: He's extremely excitable and tends to throw his all into whatever activity strikes his fancy. Mizuiro tells Ichigo that Keigo does actually have academic talent, but Keigo is far too busy throwing his energy into crazy and comedic activities to study properly. His typical greeting to Ichigo is a full-blown charge, completely with battle cry that usually ends with Ichigo clothes-lining him to the ground. He engages in slapstick to cheer people up and is rarely quiet or still.
* LovableCoward: He is constantly upset and freaking out about the Hollows he has begun to see during the Arrancar Arc.
* SecretKeeper: He doesn't know the significance of this, but he's one of only three people that Ikkaku has willingly revealed his bankai to. He's also fully filled in on the Soul Society alongside Tatsuki and Mizuiro after the events of the Deicide Arc.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Is aware of strange things happening with Ichigo, but when he starts running into Soul Reapers and seeing Hollows, he assumes that they're making a movie. Eventually, it became impossible to ignore when he witnesses a fight between Ikkaku and an Arrancar.
* TheSoCalledCoward: After Tatsuki tells him to run away, he does -- but reappears two chapters later with Zennosuke's sword, and in the next chapter, after seeing Aizen take a bomb to the head and survive, he turns around and charges at the Nigh Invulnerable BigBad himself. It should also be noted that he runs away while carrying an unconscious Chizuru.
Even though he has no combat ability and is terrified of Aizen, Keigo still steals the Zanpakutou of Karakura Town's unconscious Soul Reaper protector, knowing just enough about Soul Reapers to know that kind of weapon is his only chance of distracting Aizen long enough for his friends to escape; he is under no illusion that this is the absolute limit of what he can do against a threat like Aizen.

Keigo's older sister, Mizuho is the 24th StudentCouncilPresident at Karakura High School and handles multiple school affairs, including the local Kendo Club.
-----
* HasAType: She's only interested in bald/shaven men. Ikkaku finds her a handful to deal with as a result when he along with a small group of shinigami go undercover in the realworld for a bit. Her only previous boyfriend mentioned is a toupee-wearing boy that goes to a neighboring school.
* HandOrObjectUnderwear: She forces Ikkaku to do this is episode 229 by walking into the bathroom to give Ikkaku's back a scrub. Ikkaku is so shocked he drops his towel and is forced to use his hands to cover himself.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Even in the manga, she's rather dramatic about her desire for Ikkaku. The anime makes it worse and even takes it to its usual conclusion of involving a RescueRomance (in a PlayedForLaughs sort of way).
* StalkerWithACrush: Filler Anime episode 229 turns her into one for comedy purposes as part of her plan to win Ikkaku's heart by being a "considerate woman". She's even willing to walk in on Ikkaku in the bathroom to give his back a scrub and secretly plants an alarm clock on him so she can randomly pop up with lunch at just the right time (Ikkaku's actually in the park when she dives out of the bushes with lunch).
* StudentCouncilPresident: The 24th, no less, and Ishida's predecessor.

One of the girls in Tatsuki and Orihime's circle of friends. Often used as a PluckyComicRelief in the Karakura-based chapters, where she tries to flirt with Orihime if not downright grope her, only to be thwarted by Tatsuki.
----
* Bowdlerise: Most of her lesbian flirtation in early parts of the manga get cut from the anime, though whether its a true example of this trope or a streamlined adaptation is anyone's guess. Her later appearances in the anime (including filler) certainly make up for it.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: She was a consistent presence as part of the Karakura chapters, even being one of the few still awake during the Deicide arc. After the timeskip however, she's completely vanished and isn't brought up by anyone.
* FishOutOfWater: The Deicide arc revealed Chizuru had the ability to sense spirits, Hollows, and Soul Reapers when she regained consciousness while Karakura Town was trapped in Soul Society. Because no-one knew, she'd had absolutely no information given to her about the supernatural world and, since the gang was fleeing Aizen, she was tossed into the deep end in the worst possible way. She had absolutely no idea what was going on and demanded to be brought up to speed as soon as possible; she was well aware she may not understand everything she was told, but felt she should be told it anyway. No-one disagreed. Like the other spiritually aware school children, she was strong enough to survive Aizen's presence without dying.
* GenkiGirl: Chizuru is very, very excitable when around Orihime. Tatsuki does her best to keep her in line but there's only so much she can do.
* HiddenBuxom: When carrying Chizuru, who was unconscious, Keigo told Tatsuki once she was more well-endowed than he thought. Tatsuki promptly punches him.
* ISeeDeadPeople: Has the ability to see ghosts, hollows, and Soul Reapers but when she actually gained the ability isn't revealed.
* LipstickLesbian: She's very proud of the path she follows and is eager to convert her favorites to the same delights (but not Tatsuki, who's too mannish).
* LovableSexManiac: She makes no secret of it, always ready to ogle cute and feminine girls.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In the Return of Karakuriser, one of the signs that something weird is going on is that she has no interest in Orihime.
* PluckyComicRelief: Always cheerful and never giving up in her pursuit of Orihime.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Her glasses have a tendency to shine when she's getting too excited.
* SkinshipGrope: Loves glomping and groping Orihime.
* YaoiFangirl: She sure seemed very pleased when Ichigo was on top of Renji and it looked like they were copping feels in the school hallway.

* BrainyBrunette: Kunieda is the second best student in their class with Ishida as the top spot and Orihime as third. She's also seen often with books or magazines.
* DeadpanSnarker: Kunieda tends to snark at the antics of the class.
* GirlNextDoor: The three, in different ways. Michiru is the cute and homey one, Mahana is the more active and tomboyish type, and Kunieda is the smart and quiet Bookworm.

->Voiced by: Creator/ShigeruChiba (JP), Michael Sorich (ENG), Luis Alfonso Padilla (eps. 10-50) and Roberto Molina (eps. 213-214) (Latin American Spanish)
----
Misaomaru Kan'onji is a spirit medium and the host of the TV show Ghost Hunt. He is known for his trademark laugh (BWAHAHAHA!) He met Ichigo when he and his friends went to see him live. Unknowingly he removes a spirit's soul chain and turns him into a Hollow. After Ichigo saves him, Kanonji declares him his apprentice. He makes appearances in filler episodes, establishing the Karakura Superheroes consisting of him, the Kurosaki sisters, the Urahara shop kids, and Kon. Later on, in another filler arc (though based on manga Omakes) he is put in another by order of Urahara: The Karakurizer team.
----
* BadassNormal: Relatively speaking. By the standards of the setting, Kan'onji is just a spiritually aware human with a minor level of reishi control. However, after being made aware of how he was accidentally creating Hollows, he starts acting as a proper hero, even joining two separate teams created by Urahara, and is most effective just with his heroic heart. When Aizen begins walking through Karakura, Kan'onji is one of the only people able to stand up, impressive when even Tatsuki could barely move and normal people disintegrate from being near Aizen's reiatsu, and refused to back down despite being clearly outmatched, ationOfProtectioning it's his job as a hero to protect the innocent no matter what.
* Catchphrase: He has three: "SPIRITS ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU!", "Smells like bad spirits!", and "BWAHAHAHAHA!"
* FakeUltimateHero: Only in the sense of not being ultimate. He's certainly got a good heart, and successfully protects people and combats Hollows on several occasions.
* FeetOfClay: He's beloved as a spiritual medium and does have some level of power, but he's completely incapable of handling even a single normal Hollow by himself.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Kan'onji is the main character of the light novel, Spirits are Forever With You, where he proves to be one of the biggest threats to Azashiro's plans.
* GratuitousEnglish (?): In the original Japanese series, Kanonji commonly sprinkles Engrish into his speech, though USUALLY with correct grammar. That being said, in terms of the anime, here are moments where said Engrish is actually a bit...off. Usually when pronouncing certain Japanese romanizations of English words, sometimes using sounds that aren’t present in Japanese pronunciation (Ex. “membaa” instead of “menbaa” (member), “wissu” pronounced with a short “i” sound instead of “uiissu” (with), “baaru” instead of “booru” (ball)). In fact, on occasion, Kanonji will just sound legitimately English, even with the accent, Like in his “Hero...of justice” line from episode 50.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: Don Kanonji thinks he's protecting children throughout the country from the monsters that go bump in the night. Ichigo has to show him that he's actually helping to create those monsters. He manages to drop this afterwards, becoming a genuine hero.
* HotBlooded: His hot blooded and energetic attitude is part of why he's so popular with people.
* KamehameHadoken: His Kanon Ball, where he charges and fires a ridiculously tiny ball of reishi, which creates a surprisingly large explosion for its size.
* LargeHam: Kan'onji is very bombastic and a great showman. "BWAHAHAHAHA."
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When he realizes he's been creating Hollows while attempting to exorcize spirits he breaks down and starts to cry until Ichigo snaps him out of it.
* ShoutOut: One catchphrase is a shout out to Music/Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
* SunglassesAtNight: He always wears sunglasses as part of his getup.
* SuperSentaiStance: By himself, the Karakura Superheroes, and the Karakurizer Team.

----
A character introduced in the Lost Agent Arc. She is Ichigo's boss at his part-time job in her shop, whenever he decides to show up for his job, or she decides to kidnap him back to it.
----
* ActionMom: Her entry involves her beating up a whole group of thugs single handed. Predictably, she is quite doting and over-protective of her son.
* BloodKnight: If her SlasherSmile after beating up the gangsters is any indication, Unagiya seems to enjoy being the winner of a fight, at the very least.
* CatchPhrase: "We're not an Eel Shop." She always starts her phone calls with this due to her surname unfortunately translating out to "Eel Shop".
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Played straight. Demonstrates this by wiping the floor with a gang and kidnapping a depowered Ichigo using the same move he used on Aizen at the final battle. All this and so far Creator/TiteKubo has not confirmed whether she's a former Soul Reaper, Quincy, Vizard, Arrancar or a spiritually aware human (though it should be noted that she can see Ichigo's Substitute Shinigami Badge, which is supposed to be InvisibleToNormals).
* CoolBigSis: She likes to view herself as a big sister figure. Ichigo teases her about how she's too old for it, but if he didn't feel the same he probably wouldn't have gone to her for emotional support in the first place.
* DotingParent: To her son, Kaoru, she becomes affectionate and maternal. It's a distinct shift from when she's interacting with anyone else.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Her yelling at Ichigo on the phone shows her short-tempered side, while her wipe-out of the gangsters solidifies her as a badass.
%% * FacepalmOfDoom: Uses this to abduct Ichigo.
* HotBlooded: Except for when she's in front of her son, she's quite quick to enter conflicts and simply flatten everyone.
* MotherlySidePlait: She normally wears a pony tail for business purposes. However, as soon as he young son comes looking for her, she drags her hair into a soft side pony-tail, throws on a frilly apron and transforms from Ichigo's scary boss to affectionate, doting mother.
* PunnyName: "Unagiya" is Japanese for "eel shop". This is why people constantly mistake her odd-jobs business for a restaurant.
%% * SlasherSmile: Sports one after she defeats the gangsters.
* StacysMom: Her son Kaoru is used to men sniffing around his mother because she's beautiful. To Ichigo's horror and Ikumi's embarrassment, Kaoru warns Ichigo off from hanging around Ikumi for that reason.
* Tsundere: Despite her hostile, combative attitude towards Ichigo's lack of work ethic, which interferes with her ability to keep her business running, whenever Ichigo's in trouble, she's always ready to help out and giving him all the support he needs.

Ikumi's son. One of the only kids who doesn't like Ichigo in the series.
----
* BrattyHalfPint: He's very passive-aggressive towards Ichigo. Ikumi insists that he's only that way towards Ichigo.
* SpoiledBrat: He gives off the impression, due to his less-than-positive demeanor towards outsiders (or just Ichigo).

----
Sora Inoue was Orihime Inoue's older brother and caretaker, who became the Hollow, Acidwire, after his death. He actually perished years before the storyline, having been wounded in a car accident; Orihime carried the fatally injured Sora to the Kurosaki clinic, but despite Isshin's efforts, he died. His soul then was corrupted (in the anime, due to another Hollow; in the manga, after crossing the DespairEventHorizon) and started hounding his younger sister as the Hollow Acidwire.
----
* BodyHorror: Especially in the anime, where not only he fell in despair -- but his soul was forcibly turned into a Hollow.
* ChekhovsGunman: The hairpins that he gave to Orihime went from her TragicKeepsake to her favored weapon: the Shun Shun Rikka.
* DespairEventHorizon: Believing that Orihime had forgotten about him drove him to the edge. In reality, Orihime never did so, and actually stopped praying to his memory to not have him worry about her in the afterlife. Sora/Acidwire doesn't learn about it until later.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: As Acidwire, his mask gets a significant chunk broken off during his arc yet he never transforms into a pseudo-Arrancar like Grand Fisher. Instead more of the person he originally was starts seeping through.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: As Acidwire, he attacks Tatsuki and later Ichigo and Rukia aside of Orihime, and he claims that he wants to kill Orihime so no one else can have her.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: Right before he kicked it, Sora and Orihime had their first and last fight ever, and she didn't bid him goodbye like she always did. Therefore, when Sora was defeated and purified, Orihime told him "have a nice day" in their goodbyes.
* PromotionToParent: Sora ran away with three-year-old Orihime on tow as soon as he turned a legal adult, thus acting as her tutor and parental figure until he kicked it.
* TragicMonster: He didn't become a monster out of choice. Soul Reapers just didn't get to him in time to help him pass on.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Hollows cleansed by a Shinigami's Zanpakuto are supposed to be able to move on to Soul Society, as Rukia explained to Ichigo and Orihime when Sora purified himself with Ichigo's sword. But despite the heroes, including Orihime, going to Soul Society only a couple of arcs later, the prospect of finding Sora there is never even brought up and he's pretty much never mentioned again. Given his reason for becoming a hollow in the first place (in the manga at least), it's tragically ironic.
